STEM JAWS

Natalie Stevens, Head of Technology, Dulwich College Beijing STEM the often misinterpreted and misunderstood by parents, students and some senior leaders. As the profile of STEM has grown over the last decade approaches to developing curriculum to accommodate this has varied hugely. Dulwich College Beijing (DCB) have redefined and developed how they incorporate STEM, enterprise and 21st Century skills into their technology curriculum which have been growing from strength to strength. To share some of their practice and to detail more information on their projects, Dulwich College Beijing hosted a STEAM themed JAWS with teachers coming together from across the FOBISIA group to discuss, refine and develop their own ideas and share their good practice. The JAWS took place on 16th-17th November 2018.

The two days ended with each participant presenting the projects/activities they had worked on through the conference and the tools they would be taking back to their schools. It was great to see the different approaches and ideas and how participants collaborated on this.

Sessions were built around planning STEM projects and curriculum for any context and space. Workshops included an interactive treasure hunt, looking at department resources and space utilization as well as app slams to give the attending teachers tools and options to help plan their activities. Workshop leaders from both DCB as well as external speakers offered a range of practical ideas, software demonstrations, tech support and curriculum planning tools to help to scaffold planning and project development. Day one started with sessions from DCB’s staff introducing how Technology and STEM education is planned and taught. I would like to thank all workshop leaders especially Scott Lindner from Western Academy Beijing, Charlotte Smith from the British Chamber of Commerce & Venture Educate and Kit Harford from Tech Trek. EYFS JAWS - Outdoor Learning & Continuous Provision Sarah Curran, Assistant Headteacher, British International School, HCMC Catherine Passmore, Phase 1 Leader, British International School, Hanoi British International School, HCMC and British International School, Hanoi had the great pleasure of welcoming 30 teachers from 17 different schools to discuss “Continuous Provision”, “Outdoor learning” and “How we could use Teaching Assistants effectively”. As teachers entered, they were entertained by the Primary music department playing songs they use in EYFS lessons. Anthony Rowlands is currently the Principal of BIS HCMC but has been the Principal of BIS Hanoi so it was only fitting that he was able to start our JAWS with a welcome. He emphases what FOBISIA JAWS is about and he encouraged everyone to have those professional dialogues and more importantly make those contacts that will be able to continue after the event. Sarah Curran, Assistant Headteacher at BIS HCMC shared a presentation “From Dreams to Reality” that outlined the journey of the new Early Years and Infant building. She explained some of the challenges and activities the school had gone through in creating the new campus. Catherine Passmore Phase 1 Leader from BIS Hanoi set the scene of their journey of developing their outdoors and the aims of how the sessions would run.

On Saturday, we welcomed some more teachers and they were able to hear a presentation from the teaching assistants that explained their journey. They explained how continuous provision had been built into their performance management and they showed pictures of areas they have created. Teachers then choose 2 workshops:-Outdoor Learning – Part B, Quality Continuous Provision – Part B or Effective use of TA’s. Everyone then heard from Laura Conroy and Cannelle Leroy from Tanglin Trust School on “Loose parts and natural resources in continuous provision”. Staff left with their reflections and lots of learning, sharing and networking opportunities.

Year 2 children were the official tour guides and took groups around. Feedback from teachers was positive and most they liked the design and furniture layout. They also thought including shared Early Learning areas with cooking facilities benefited children’s learning.

Workshops then took place in various locations. Themes were:- Outdoor Learning – Part A, Developing Physical Challenge and Use of the Splash Pool, Quality Continuous Provision – Part A, Developing Creative Opportunity with a focus on Music or EYFS Provision in Year 1.

The afternoon also provided opportunity to hear from Sarah Dixon in Alice Smith on “Hanging fabrics and lighting”. Teachers also had a go at Dough Disco led by Maria Shooter F3 Leader in BIS HCMC. Free time was spent in small groups to reflect, looking around the Weekly Digest

CPD Opportunity cont... Who should attend? An assumption will be made that those attending have already undergone child safeguarding training at a basic level. Anyone with child protection responsibilities, designated staff and deputies, child protection officers, senior leaders, child protection committee members, Counsellors and Governing Board members. Best practice dictates that those responsible for child safeguarding in a school should attend an advanced level of training that is refreshed every two years. This course is designed to establish staff in that post and refresh those already trained to an advanced level who are designated staff and others, or senior leaders in a school.

The Trainers: Tim Gerrish OBE is a highly committed and commended International Child Protection expert with extensive experience in advising on child safeguarding risk management issues and investigations. He specialises in advising international school leaders, conducting audits and evaluations as well as developing and delivering top class training on child safeguarding for international schools and high profile organisations all around the world. Tim is an accredited consultant to the Council of International Schools (CIS), Council of British International Schools (COBIS) and Federation of British International Schools in SE Asia (FOBISIA). He is a proactive leader and trainer who is passionate about building partnerships in an effort to ensure children are better protected globally. Background Tim is Founder and Director of International Child Protection Advisors (ICPA) Ltd, www.icpa.co.uk , his background is in law enforcement with 30years experience as a detective with Scotland Yard in London. He was also head of the UK’s National Criminal Intelligence Service Serious Sex Offender unit before working with the Child Exploitation and Online Protection centre (CEOP). At CEOP his role was Head of International Partnerships, working with international schools, foreign governments, law enforcement agencies and child protection practitioners overseas. He has extensive experience of working with schools and other organisations all around the world.

Kate Beith is an International School Safeguarding Consultant. In her commitment to keeping children safe, Kate understands the challenges facing international schools. She is recognised for her work in leading safeguarding development across a group of international schools in China, Korea, Singapore and Myanmar. Kate has worked with Tim for a number of years, and has now joined him to offer a range of customised advanced level training for those working in international schools. Her work as an early years educator also gives her the experience to also support Safeguarding in this specialist area for young children. Background After studying at Goldsmith’s College, London University, Kate taught in the primary sector in London, Oxford and Surrey. She then became principal of a large early years College where protecting children was at the heart of the school. She campaigned on several child protection issues at government level. During this time Kate consulted internationally with schools in Japan, Germany and the British Council in the Maldives. From 2007 until 2018 Kate worked for a recognised group of international colleges as Deputy Director of Schools leading Safeguarding and Early Years across China, Korea, Singapore and Myanmar. Most recently Kate completed an MA in ‘Working with Children and their Families’ at Pen Green Children’s Centre and Research Base, Leicester University. Kate has worked extensively with child protection experts internationally and in the UK and is a member of the CIS International Child Protection Task Force She is also experienced in developing bespoke Safeguarding training materials, leading internal investigations and giving support to Heads leading child protection issues and managing allegations.

SECONDARY GEOGRAPHY JAWS Jerudong International School, Brunei Friday 18th-19th January 2019

This Job Alike Workshop is an opportunity for FOBISIA Geography teachers across the region to get together to share good practice and new ideas about the teaching of Geography. All participants will be actively engaged in creating the agenda to ensure that the two day event meets the needs and wishes of those attending. All sessions will be delivered by those participating in the workshop. Some initial ideas for session topics are listed below: • Using GIS in the classroom and in the field • Enquiry based learning • Impactful AfL in geography • Sharing foreign field trip locations and experiences • Student led projects • Integrating fieldwork into the curriculum • Assessment in Geography • Getting the most from Middle Years The above sessions are merely suggestions and it is hoped that the agenda will evolve based on the experience and interests of those attending. Elizabeth Jarman We are delighted to welcome our keynote speaker, UK based Elizabeth Jarman to this BSJ Learning Environments Conference. Elizabeth, founder of the Communication Friendly SpacesTM (CFSTM) approach is passionate about learning environments. She works with architects and educators to re-frame the way that people think about learning environments, inside and out. Using the latest research into brain development, physicality and learning, skills acquisition and interpersonal connectivity, Elizabeth challenges historical thinking about the way that learning environments are organised; to create highly effective and intellectually active spaces.
