Supporting EAL Learners in the Mainstream Classroom
Jane Scott, Team Leader, Primary EAL, Garden International School, Kuala Lumpur “How do we support students with up-levelling their academic language in writing?” “What are schools doing to support families with the transition into a new school culture?” “Can language objectives be embedded into Primary maths lessons?” “How do we fix a broken co-teaching relationship?” “Where can we find digital resources to support our students language development?” These were just a few of the many and varied questions that were raised and answered at the popular, whole school EAL JAWS held at Garden International School on 8th-9th March 2019. Linking these questions throughout the JAWS was an overwhelming atmosphere of collaboration and supportive learning; this really is the essence of an effective JAWS.
Fifty one teachers attending from a variety of 22 different schools from around the region, provided a rare assembly of EAL expertise under one roof that meant everyone could connect with like-minded individuals and share their journeys of EAL development within their own schools. The facilitated conversations at the tables were as valuable as the strategies and ideas shared by the presenters themselves. Workshops were plentiful, with 15 to choose from spread over a day and a half. We also put

in a productive ‘unconference’ slot for some round-the-table discussions on topics not covered in the presentations. JAWS events depend on participants stepping up to lead sessions, and for some this was an opportunity to develop professionally and lead a workshop for the first time; a special thank-you goes out to those presenters.

A highlight for many was the insight into the perspective of an EAL student’s life through the voices of seven GIS students ranging from Year 4 through to Year 13. The students spoke eloquently and from the heart. There were certainly teachers reaching for tissues, as we listened to one student reflecting on the negative impact on her self-esteem that she had experienced joining an English medium school, and feeling powerless without English. Another student gave us a glimpse as to the hidden hours of study that some of our students had endured on top of the school day to prove themselves #muchmorethanEAL. One of the Year 4 students from the panel, wrote

Supporting EAL Learners in the Mainstream Classroom cont... a story in class the following week and his hero in the piece was ‘Barry, a talented Y13 bilingual student”. Barry had been on the panel with the Y4 student, and as well as inspiring the teachers in the room, Barry’s language journey had also inspired a younger EAL self. The voices of our EAL students were as impactful as the voices of our most experienced EAL teachers in the room. The conversations, and the EAL learning
network continues after the actual JAWS itself, with conversations taking place both virtually via email and on Twitter and through followup school visits. The purpose of all of the collaboration is relevant, quality professional development for teachers in order to support our students the very best we can. All in all, a very successful EAL JAWS and we are already looking forward to the next one.
CLEAPSS Conference and JAWS
Chris Pane, Head of Science, British International School, HCMC On 5th - 7th March 2019, British International School, HCMC (BIS) was proud and excited to host both a training event and Jobs Alike Workshop (JAWS) for science technicians from across Asia. CLEAPSS is a UK organisation that’s internationally renowned for supporting practical science education. It is regularly consulted by the UK government and its advice and documentation are recognised by both the Health and Safety Executive and the Department for Education.
CLEAPSS trainer and advisor Joanna Sacks visited BIS this week to deliver the training to eighteen science technicians visiting from all across Asia. As a result, technicians are now better equipped to find information and benefit from the excellent guidance CLEAPSS is able to offer our schools. Apart from updating and improving health and safety practise, technicians have been learning how better to support teaching in Science labs. Teachers are looking forward to this learning being cascaded down to them with the aim of further improving the student’s experience of science.

Developing a Successful International School Swimming Programme Matthew Ferrier, Head of Aquatics, Bangkok Preparatory & Secondary School This past week, from Friday 15th to Saturday 16th of March 2019, Bangkok Prep were proud to host the FOBISIA Swimming Jobs Alike Workshop with coaches and teachers attending from all over Asia.
The sessions in the workshop focused upon the development of swim programmes in the region and the group met to share ideas and examples of best practice. A comprehensive list of topics were discussed within a very collaborative atmosphere; with the added advantage of having squad swim coaches, classroom swim teachers, and directors of sport attending. It was highly beneficial having experienced specialist individuals from a range of roles and educational contexts dissecting topic such as swimming curriculum systems, organising swimming galas, long term athlete development, developing team culture, and swimming assessments to name just a few.
Having a relaxed environment with open and sharing colleagues made this one of the most fruitful professional development this author has attended in recent years! Looking forward to the 2020 FOBISIA Swimming JAWS already!

Technology for the Non Specialist Teacher and TA JAWS Jose O’Donovan, Year 5 & KS2 Technology Coordinator, St. Andrews International School, Bangkok On Friday 1st and Saturday 2nd March 2019, St Andrew’s International School (STA) welcomed 15 delegates from schools across the region for the Technology for Non Specialist Teachers and TAs. On the Friday morning, the delegates were welcomed by some of our year 6 students. After introductions, members of our student council gave them a guided tour of the school campus, which they had been having training on. This was highly successful and the Student Councilors were great representatives for the school. For the rest of the day, workshops were ran by the two Technology Coordinators from STA as well as some teachers who showcased how technology was being used to enhance teaching and learning across the school. There was also a special session delivered by Steve Jackman an Apple Distinguished Educator on Garage Band for

the Non Music Teacher. After a day of hard work and sharing good practice, it was time for some delicious authentic Thai food at a well-known restaurant in Bangkok.
This was a lovely opportunity to chat more with each other and end the first day. On the Saturday, we had more workshops being run - focusing on Digital Art and integrating technology in Literacy and Maths. The final workshops were a chance for teachers to discuss using technology in assessment. It was a great two days of learning and sharing, with lots of positive discussions. The feedback that we received from the delegates was very positive. Hopefully, shared ideas will be fed back into schools and have a great impact on children’s learning and experiences in school.

Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training (ASIST) is a two-day interactive workshop in suicide first aid. ASIST teaches participants to recognize when someone may have thoughts of suicide and work with them to create a plan that will support their immediate safety. Although ASIST is widely used by healthcare providers, participants don’t need any formal training to attend the workshop—anyone 16 or older can learn and use the ASIST model. The final two ASIST courses of this academic year will be on the 14th and 15th May and the 17th and 18th of June 2019.
