Developing Excellence in Writing JAWS Rick Smith, Deputy Head (Primary), International School of Brunei The International School, Brunei hosted the Developing Excellence in Writing JAWS on the 26th and 27th April 2019. Delegates from a range of International Schools presented and discussed pedagogy and good practice for raising pupils attainment across both Primary and Secondary phases.

There was a tremendous amount of energy, collaboration and discussion over the two days. The packed agenda included exemplars of outstanding progress and achievement using the ‘Talk 4 Writing’ programme. Examples of ‘Visual Literacy’ and ‘Slow Writing’ were shared and a fascinating debate erupted after ISB and Jerudong International School presented assessment methods linked to ‘Life after Levels’ and ‘Progression of Skills’. Abimbola Oyetade (The ABC International School, Vietnam) shared examples of how to enhance the learning experience in writing by using ICT, Apps and online programmes. Kellie Shanahan and Elizabeth Standen (The Alice Smith School, Malaysia) presented excellent ways to stimulate imaginative writing across both Primary and Secondary aged pupils. All the superb resources were shared between the participating schools.

Victoria Millership (Jerudong International School, Brunei) and Jennifer Finnigan (St Christopher’s International Primary School, Penang) spoke about ways to improve the vocabulary of EAL writers and adopting a whole school approach to the teaching of writing.

The Developing Excellence in Writing JAWS delegates worked extremely hard during the busy two days and also enjoyed social events and sight-seeing excursions in the evenings. The International School, Brunei was extremely proud to host this event and would like to thank all of the visiting schools for showing such enthusiasm, interest and dedication towards the jobalike workshop. The feedback has been extremely positive and we hope to run similar JAWS sessions in the near future.

Vanessa Carter (Kolej Tuanku Ja’afar Primary School, Malaysia) depicted how Jumpstart Books are an effective tool as warm-ups for writing activities and Wilma Ramsay (Jerudong International School, Brunei) shared her technique to engage writing in Year 1 directly focused on purpose and audience.

Business and Economics JAWS

Mark Solomons, Head of Business Education, Garden International School KL

On May 3rd & 4th, Garden International School, Kuala Lumpur had the pleasure to welcome Business and Economics teachers from 16 schools around the region for what was an intense but rewarding couple of days of PD.

The core themes of the Business and Economics JAWS centred around personalisation, assessment and feedback and we were treated to a wide and wonderful variety of workshops that provided those present with a wealth of ideas and strategies to take back with them. These workshops included subject specific marking workshops led by specialist examiners as well as sessions looking at cognitive load theory, EAL, feedback, marking and formative assessment strategies. We also engaged in a TechTeachMeet, had a session on the application of nudge theory in the classroom and a wonderfully insightful and equally relaxing mindfulness workshop which led the delegates through a guided meditation and explored ways we can support the wellbeing of our learners. Delegates were offered two ‘unconference’ sessions that allowed us to extend conversations beyond the workshops and to explore ideas that had not previously been included in the agenda. These saw a range of discussions taking place including an IB focused discussion, an exploration of how to embed good reading habits in learners and paper specific examination conversations, alongside plenty of open discussions, networking and idea and resource

sharing.

It was a fantastic cohort of passionate, dedicated and like-minded teachers who will all (hopefully!) have taken many positives with them from the weekend; one thing we all can takeaway having connected over the JAWS is access to a wider network of supportive colleagues across the region that we can bounce ideas off, share resources with and continue to learn from. I certainly can’t wait for the next one.
