Wellbeing JAWS
Laura Maddern, Extended Primary Leadership Team: Our Staff, The Alice Smith School The Alice Smith School in Kuala Lumpur was proud to host the Well-Being JAWs on May 10th and 11th. This was an incredibly successful event with sharing of best practice among other FOBISIA schools. Alice Smith were hosting a staff Well-Being week at the same time and part of this week included hosting a visiting NLP practitioner, Time Line Therapist and Health and Fitness Coach from Australia namely Luke Pearce, he also ran sessions at the event.
This two day event kicked off with a welcome from Mrs Laura Maddern sharing what works well at Alice Smith and the hard work the Happy and Healthy Group which has been setup to promote happiness and health for all. This followed with a workshop delivered by Luke Pearce on stress reduction and management which gave us some practical tips on how to best manage this. Lucy Clewes- Garner then shared the journey that JIS school has been on in terms of Well-Being for students and mindfulness - many practical tips were shared and noted, her enthusiasm and positivity was contagious. After this many Alice Smith members of staff shared what works well for them in terms of Well-Being, this ranged from breathing techniques, gratitude journals, using anchoring systems as well as coaching and the GROW model in order to achieve a personal Well-Being goal such as running a 10K. Another session was shared on The Zones of Regulation which is for students and something that has worked well at Alice Smith sharing a common language and colour charts have been of particular success.

The Saturday morning started with Luke’s workshop on Chunking of information and the difference between people who see the big picture and those who need more detail furthermore how to manage these people in your teams in order to obtain optimum efficiency. Following this Brooke Buchanan shared the fascinating journey which Harrow, in Beijing has gone on in terms of Positive Education and the impact this has had on staff and students alike. We held an optional afternoon session with Luke Pearce on releasing negative emotions from the past - this was well received and had a significant impact on many. The two day event was a great success - sharing ideas with like minded people. Thank you to those who attended.

Whole School Music JAWS
Beth Brown, Primary Music Leader, British International School Ho Chi Minh City This year’s Whole School Music Job Alike Workshops were hosted by the British International School Ho Chi Minh City (BIS) at the beginning of May. Over twenty music educators from across Asia came together to spend two days sharing their knowledge and good practice for their subject. During the event, all attending delegates led a presentation, demonstration lesson or discussion concentrating on an area of their own expertise. As the JAWs covered music education across the entire age range, from EYFS to IB and A Level, the range of topics covered during such a short time was vast. To open the event in style and welcome the staff from other FOBISIA schools, BIS presented a short concert featuring performances from infant, junior and secondary soloists and ensembles, in order to demonstrate the importance of promoting a culture of performance from a young age and engaging older students to inspire younger aspiring musicians.
Music’ and ‘Angklung’. One of the highlights of the weekend was certainly the ‘Gospel Singing’ session. This session led to an impromptu performance from the JAWs delegates of ‘We Sing Praises to Thee’ in a junior assembly. As one teacher eloquently said to the students, “We ask you to take risks all the time and it’s only fair that we should do the same!’ Feedback following the JAWs was very positive, with one delegate writing, “I had a wonderful time meeting and learning from other music teachers. It is rare that we have the opportunity to share ideas, stories, common issues (which often ended in people offering solutions from similar situations) as well as sharing resources and teaching tips.” We look forward to the Music JAWs becoming a regular fixture within the FOBISIA calendar and next year’s event will be hosted by ABC International School, Ho Chi Minh City, on Wednesday 2nd October 2019.
The workshops themselves began with two of BIS HCMC’s own teachers leading separate sessions on ‘Vocal Warm-Ups for Choirs’ and ‘Exploring GarageBand on iPads’. Other workshops covered such wide-ranging topics as ‘Music and Movement for EYFS’, ‘Teaching Music to the Kinesthetic Learner’, ‘Korean
