When we found our premises in Coffs Harbour’s Jetty district (long-loved for its foodie experiences), we knew we could achieve our unique promise. Julia Hunt’s life changed for the better when she got her dog Halen. Julia was determined to train him extremely well and started documenting the process on social media. The pair gained thousands of followers and have evolved into quite the dynamic duo. The bond between them is quite remarkable, and Halen even works with Julia now in her role as a youth worker.
H
ey Julia, Tell us about how you and Halen first met?
For a really long time, I obsessed over learning about and understanding the different traits of dog breeds so that one day I could be the best dog owner possible. Once I'd settled on a breed and the right breeder, I patiently sat on their waitlist for Halen to come along. As soon as he was born and I saw photos of him, I knew that he was mine. I picked him up when he was 8 weeks of age, and we've been inseparable 24 COFFS COAST focus

ever since. What breed is Halen and why did you choose that particular breed over others?
I think the authenticity of someone doing their absolute best and making mistakes as they went along with their first dog is what initially had people supporting us.
Halen is a long coat German Shepherd Dog (GSD). As a part of my role as a Youth Worker I do shift work, and before I got Halen I was often running at nighttime because of my schedule. It can be daunting
heading out alone late at night, so I was looking for a handler focused, driven dog who could run with me and keep me safe. I wanted a dog that people would naturally be wary of crossing, but that would also be great with children and able to relax in a family

him and fulfil his mental and physical needs to create the well-behaved best friend that I'd always wanted. I think the authenticity of someone doing their absolute best and making mistakes as they went along with their first dog is what initially had people supporting us. The dog training world is unfortunately very misogynistic in nature, so I think there's also an element of women supporting women. Halen and I break a lot of stereotypes in this industry. I'm a small woman with a big powerful dog. My big powerful dog is also an incredible therapy dog. We are self-taught, and we are fierce in standing up for what we believe in, while also elevating other women who want to walk the same path. Each day when I train Halen, I also film it, edit it, and post it up. I love every second, but it is time-consuming stuff. Consistency in posting is important and connecting with people online is too. I see my followers more as friends than anything else. Halen and I have built a beautiful and supportive online community and I love hearing what they have to say about different topics, all while seeing them progress The relationship with their own dogs.
social media with over 80 thousand followers. What do you think are the contributing factors to online success?
between a trainer and their dog is the most important thing of all. If you want a dog to work with you, then the dog has to think you’re fun to work with!
Since day one with Halen, I've been posting about our training journey on social media. It didn't take me long to realise after Halen came to me that I was in way over my head. Despite him being a great dog, he was a lot more intense and driven than I thought he would be. I immediately had to begin training
Halen and yourself compete in specific competitions. Can you share a memorable moment or achievement from one of your competitions that stands out to you?
Halen and I compete in a dog sport called IGP, which was originally created as a breed suitability test for GSD's. Recently, we went to the IGP Nationals to earn our "BH-VT", a routine which puts the dog's obedience and confidence to the test. We also came away with the National Trophy for Best Handling in 2023, which was a huge compliment.
What role does the bond between a dog and their trainer play in competitive training, and how have you strengthened that bond with Halen? The relationship between a trainer and their dog is the most important thing of all. If you want a dog to work with you, then the dog has to think you're fun to work with! When I train Halen, I make sure I'm animated and exciting. The energy is up, and we run, laugh, and play together. If you're struggling to have a great relationship with your dog, you should play with them every day and watch that shift. Halen is also a therapy dog. Tell us what sort of criteria makes a therapy dog and how do therapy dogs help others? Halen comes to work with me and supports young people who are experiencing or are at risk of homelessness. He's a big asset for the service and has really contributed to the happiness of clients during the time he's worked there. Therapy dog roles can vary a lot depending on where and with who the dog is required to work. The most important thing for a therapy dog is that they enjoy interacting with people, and that they are confident and stable going into any environment. My favourite thing about having Halen work with me is seeing his intuition in action. I didn't train this in, but he naturally began to alert me when a young person in the building was upset, and he would lead me to them to assist. He will then sit with us while we work through that together. There's something so special about the healing an animal can bring to us, and I feel incredibly lucky to witness that so often because of Halen. Finally, what does Halen mean to you? Halen has changed my whole life, I wouldn't be who I am now without him. He's helped me to believe in myself more, to gain confidence, and has shown me what it means to really work as a team with someone else. He means the absolute world to me. Thanks Julia. I feel so blessed to be able to capture the most memorable moments in their lives. Occasionally they are bittersweet moments though, capturing the most early moments in life through to capturing some of their last is always a privilege. Do you have any favourite photos that have a special story or connection for you?
I was also super lucky to be able to capture the birth of my best friend’s son and I think that was pretty special and definitely something I’ll always treasure.

We sat down with Scott Warden, the devoted president of the Coffs Harbour Ice Hockey Club, to talk about the club’s inception, its eclectic mix of players, and the joys of fostering a niche sport on the sunny Coffs Coast. S C O T T W A R D E N
H
ey Scott, tell us about the Coffs Harbour Ice Hockey Club and where it all began?
Back in the day there was a league of 4 teams but that ended before my time here. When I arrived, a dedicated local was running it all and sending text messages weekly to round up people to play. We’ve now established a committee to help run the club and we have better tools for communicating. What sets the Coffs Harbour Ice Hockey Club apart from other sports clubs in the area? Ice hockey is a niche sport in Australia. While ice hockey in countries like Canada is almost religion, here in Australia it is definitely a fringe sport. A lot of the players group up playing ice hockey overseas and now make Australia home. What you’ll find is a real passion from those who grew up playing the sport overseas to get more Australians playing. Living in a sub30 COFFS COAST focus
tropical climate, ice hockey is a great sport to get into. While it’s hot and humid outside you can escape to the cool confines of the ice rink. What's your role in the club and how long have you been a part of the team?

If you want to try something a little different Ice Hockey is a great option. We have equipment people can use that makes it accessible to anyone.
We have players who regularly make the trip from as far as Armidale and Port Macquarie to play. One member even makes the trip from Tamworth on occasions. I also have to boast about my son who plays ice hockey at a high level. At 17 he’s played for Queensland in under 18, under 20 and was selected to play in the open Queensland team. He was also a reserve for the under 18 National team last year and hopes to make the National team this year.
with skaters free to interchange with bench players throughout the game. What are some of the highlights or memorable moments of the club since you have been a part of it?
First are the tournaments that we’ve hosted where locals and visitors come together to play. Our regular games are great but it’s nice to have something to play for. The other highlight is what we’ve done to make the sport more accessible. We have gear for all age groups that allows people to come and try the sport without the barrier of buying specialised equipment. Fundraising and governments grants have helped considerably.
For those unaware how is the game of ice hockey played?
Due to the lack of other local teams you often travel quite far for competition. How is this team chosen to compete and what are the competitions like?
It is much like regular hockey in that the aim is to get the puck, in this case, in the net. Differences obviously being that its played on ice and the sticks are either left or right handed. There are 5 players plus a goalie on the ice, however the team is a larger number
When we’ve done road trips to play elsewhere, we take expressions of interest from anyone who would like to play. Pretty much everyone gets to go along if they show interest as we are usually playing friendlies. It’s mostly about the fun rather than winning.
You highly encourage anyone to come along to your casual ice hockey day. Who is ice hockey for? Ice hockey is for everyone. As it’s a niche sport in Australia, it’s great for adults and kids alike that may not like traditional Australian sports like footy but want to still play a team sport. If you want to try something a little different ice hockey is a great option. We have equipment people can use that makes it accessible to anyone. The Big Banana has Saturday morning learn to skate sessions that they run and ice hockey is a natural step after getting down the basics of skating. What are some of your hopes and visions of the club going forward? The hope is to build a strong club with a greater membership base. Attracting kids into the sport is important for the long term viability of the club. It would be great to see more kids coming along and falling in love with the sport. With an increased membership base we could run leagues for seniors and juniors. What keeps you coming back every season to play Ice Hockey? The love of the game, the community around it, getting some exercise and getting to play with my sons. Thanks Scott. COFFS COAST focus 31

Coffs Harbour LIQUOR
W
ACCORD
hat is the Coffs Harbour Liquor Accord “CHLA”? The CHLA is an incorporated body containing multiple stakeholders. We address local liquor licensing issues in a proactive way based on harm minimisation, through best practice Responsible Service of Alcohol (RSA) initiatives. We listen to the community and local police to address issues and implement policies designed to minimise community disruption by the consumption of alcohol. Who is involved? We have pubs, clubs, restaurants, resorts, bottle shops, event centres, small bars, and breweries who get together with police, council and any other group that may wish to discuss local issues. Check out our website for a full list but we have approx. 50 registered financial members. What is your current focus? The simple answer is RSA. We have implemented a Multi
Venue Barring (MVB) system that allows us to bar individuals from entering any CHLA licensed premises. This is a communication tool which has over 100 people listed as not welcome for various reasons. Examples are below, however a full list of offences can be found on the website. • Domestic Violence – We are currently running awareness campaigns to assist people to reach out for help. • Anti-Social Behaviour – We will not tolerate aggressive or intimidating behaviour including damaging property. You will be MVB for 1 to 3 years. • Underage Drinking - If you are under 18 and
are caught trying to enter a venue, in a venue or in possession of fake ID, you will be MVB until you are 19. • If you supply fake ID to an under aged person, you will be MVB for 1 year. What is your advice? The Coffs Coast has some great venues. We encourage you to head out and enjoy them all in a safe and respectful manner. If you are under 18 follow the rules, everyone else just needs to behave themselves and enjoy our venues responsibly. We are working with the police to ensure we use best practice techniques to promote responsible behaviour in and around our premises.
The Coffs Harbour Liquor Accord had been developed as a partnership involving the input and cooperation of the key stake holders. It is based on harm minimisation and Responsible Service of Alcohol principles contained within the liquor laws. All parties undertake to implement the principles to improve the safety and environment in the Coffs Harbour local area. The underpinning strategy is to address community issues by community members in a proactive way that will deliver best outcomes for all parties including local licensees, Police, the Roads & Traffic Authority, the Mid North Coast Area Health Service, Coffs Harbour City Council, licensing authorities, Health Services, the business community, residents and visitors.

Seaview Tavern Woolgoolga was recently awarded highly commended in the Best Family Friendly Category of the AHA NSW Awards for Excellence 2023. We had a chat with the team to find out more about the venue and its success.
H
istory - Tell us about the history of the Seaview Tavern and how it has changed over the years. The Seaview has been part of the Woolgoolga community since the original tavern was built in 1888 when you could view the sea. Since then, the building has been rebuilt, renovated, converted into a town hall, burnt down and rebuilt again but the heart of the hotel remains. The current tavern was built by Bruce Wilson in 1974. The hotel is still proudly owned and operated by Mr. Wilson’s family in partnership with the North Coast Hotel Group. Our most recent renovations included updating the kids’ play area, bottle shop, gaming area, beer garden and cocktail bar. Accolades - Congratulations! Tell us about the award and what it means to the business? Thank you! The Best Family Friendly Category is about providing a venue for the whole family. The Seaview Tavern was up against some exceptional venues across the whole of NSW, so to be awarded a highly commended was a huge honour and we couldn’t be prouder of 38 COFFS COAST focus

The Rubens are hitting the stage at the Hoey Moey on Sunday 7th of January, so we spoke to Sam Margin about what the band has been up to and what we can expect from them at this show and in the year ahead.
H
i Sam. Tell us a bit about what The Rubens have been up to over the last year?
We would have been in Coffs for SummerSalt Festival earlier in the year, which is a great tour and we went all around the country with a bunch of great acts. That sort of kicked off the year in terms of live shows. Since then we’ve been playing some festivals and one off shows here and there but really focusing on finishing off the album, which we've been working on for almost two years. This year has been a combination of live shows and keeping that side of things going, because that's probably the most fun part, and then also knuckling down to finish the record, which we’ve finished now which is sick. The album is unannounced at this point; it will come out in 2024, but we've got a bunch of new singles ready to go which will 50 COFFS COAST focus

airport and check in and do all the stuff that goes along with having, you know, 20 giant suitcases with gear and stuff! It's pretty fun and we have a pretty fun little crew too. That time of year on the coast of New South Wales, Queensland and Victoria is kind of like a summer holiday with some shows sprinkled in there.
On the road in Australia is a lot of fun because it's sort of a combination of getting to go home to your own bed a couple of days a week maybe, and then Touring with your being out on the road brothers and mates, it's which is a nice balance. Touring with awesome. I mean, we Being on the road for your brothers wouldn't have made it the kind of tour that and mates is awesome. 11 years into our career we're doing is great I mean, we wouldn’t if we didn't have a good because we're flying have made it 11 years time and we still really into certain areas and into our career if we enjoy it. Honestly, we then we're jumping didn’t have a good miss each other when in a van and driving time. we're not together, we're down the coast. We’re always hanging out and starting up north and our actual crew as well, driving all the way they've been with us for a very long time, so down to Victoria, so it's more of a road trip vibe where we're not having to go to the we meet up at the airport and everyone gets
pumped up and we just sort of spend every hour together for like, almost a week. We have a great time, we go to local pubs along the way, we stop for lunches, we play shows, we go for swims, it's a pretty fun time. We’re looking forward to your gig at the Hoey Moey in Coffs on the 7th Jan, what can fans expect from this show and this tour? I think, quite a lot of energy. I think over the last couple of albums we've started to focus on writing tracks that are going to be really fun to perform live, or at least make sure that we've got those on the record because you know, you write an album and then you've got to go out and play those songs for the rest of your career. We've got a lot of energy in the new material. So I think you could expect it to be kind of raucous and, you know, we're pretty tight these days, I feel like the show should be pretty good. Quite high energy, quite a lot of fun, especially because we're playing smaller venues. We're not playing big theatres, we're playing pubs and stuff, and they're really our favourite venues, especially in Australia, so it should be a pretty packed, sweaty, rock'n'roll sort of show which is a lot of fun. Is there anything you would say has been influencing or inspiring your music and performances recently? Lyrically, it's myself and Elliot that write the songs. We don't necessarily pull from personal experiences so much as we like to create

Sam Dyball has been creating music his whole life, and his passion for art and music is contagious. He has been playing loads of local gigs as well as some festivals and nightclubs further afield.
D Y B A L L
H
i Sam. Tell us a bit about your journey with music and how you got started?
Music has always played a really important part in my life. From a young age I knew it was my absolute passion and I was always encouraged by my family and the people around me to pursue that passion. I did my first ever live performance with my Mum and Dad at the Orara Valley Fair when I was 3 years old and I decided at about age 12 that I wanted to start learning to play the ukulele which started the path that would take me to learning other instruments as well. From that point I started playing in a band with my Dad and my brother called D’Boyzos which gave me just over 600 gigs worth of experience in the 6 years that we were together. 2020 was a real turning point and the start of another new path as venues were only looking for solo acts when live music started returning so I decided to try and bring all those past experiences into a new perspective with just my guitar, Dad’s 52 COFFS COAST focus
stomp box and myself, which has led up to today. How would you describe your musical style? My personal musical style has taken some big turns over the last 3 years especially through lockdown when I started learning how to produce my own music. The lockdown period led me to creating my songwriting and production project called ESIUM which is now evolving into a hybrid live electronic and audiovisual set. My musical style in an acoustic setting has a mixture of folk and pop but still has a couple classics with a bit of my own
original acoustic songs and style of music. Can you talk us through your creative process when writing and making music? My creative process is more about flow than anything else and seeing how long I can stay in a consistent flow state. In the last 6-12 months especially, my focus has been around using my computer as an instrument and really just playing around with sounds in that flow state until I find something I like. I’ve only recently been learning about the visualisation side of it all too and to have live reactive visuals working with Ableton has completely changed things for me because I’m now also
where I can supply the vibe for a whole room of people and to be a conduit for people to connect through music and dance. What can people expect from a Sam Dyball gig? They will definitely get 100% of me on stage with a few bad jokes every now and then. I also got a looper for Christmas so you can see me trying to work that out every now and then. As I evolve more with my other project they will be able to see something a little different and a new experience that I’m really excited to bring to a live stage. Have you got any plans or dreams you’re working towards in your music career?
creating something for people to see as well as hear. What are some of the things that you feel are inspiring or influencing your music at the moment? I’m hugely inspired by a few different artists in the electronic scene at the moment but have been super inspired in the last few months from just having conversations with people and writing about the consistent themes between the people that I talk to. I love to write about all aspects of life, and draw inspiration from everything around me, but also use that as a basis to create brand new stories that can also be translated and seen from different perspectives. I feel blessed to be able to use all the ups and downs in life to be able to create art and allow it to be seen from a brand new perspective. I’ve also been really inspired by the beautiful Gumbaynggirr country that we call home. I grew up out in the Orara Valley so I was always in and around the river. It's been really nice to revisit those places and just reconnect myself with those places and that part of myself.
I’ve been really diving deep into creating a new original sound with a mixture of all my influences as well as the experience that I’ve I’ve also been gained from performing really inspired to live audiences for by the beautiful the last 10 years since I started performing. I Gumbaynggirr would absolutely love country that we call to take that kind of home. I grew up out set overseas as well as in the Orara Valley so around Australia. Playing Have you been I was always in and a completely original set playing many gigs around the river. with visuals at festivals lately? What have is definitely a dream as been some of your well. My dream is really to favourite shows to just be doing what I’m doing now in my little date? I’ve been doing so many really good gigs lately studio on a bigger scale but still retain the at a lot of local venues with the most receptive feeling of being in the room with me while I’m making it. audiences as well. The people that I talk to afterwards have had an amazing time and really enjoyed themselves which I’m always so grateful for. The Hoey is always great fun to play at but I’ve recently had a lot of fun doing some guest appearances with friends that I’ve collaborated on songs with in some nightclubs and at festivals too. It is an unreal experience to be performing songs that I made and recorded in my little bedroom studio. What do you enjoy most about playing live? I absolutely love the exchange of energy that happens with live performances, and I love to bring the same energy to 2 people that I would bring to 20,000 people on stage. It’s such an amazing pleasure to be in a position
Where can people find out more, have a listen or get in touch? I just released my first EP on Spotify which you can find under ESIUM with a couple of my other originals and the collaboration remix covers that I’ve done too. I'll be performing acoustic down at the Twilight Markets if people want to come down and have some great food and listen to me perform. I’ve been distancing myself from most of my social media recently but I am on Instagram as @ esiummusic where I'll be posting some clips as I start developing my new hybrid live set so people can see a bit of the journey if they wish. H
i Dave, can you tell us about when you first discovered chocolate making? What was the learning process like in the early days?
I first discovered chocolate making during COVID lockdowns in 2020. I was lucky enough to be working, but could only drive to and from work, so with no gym or other activities, I had a lot of time on my hands. I watched a lot of YouTube, and there I saw a lady with a small scale chocolate making operation. I grew up in Tassie, so we had tours of Cadbury every school holidays, and I had assumed the only way to make chocolate was with large, industrial machines. I had however, watched a program 10 years ago about a guy called Charlie, who figured out how to make small scale chocolate and I hadn’t really heard much more about this type of thing. The learning process was from basically very little knowledge, until I found two fantastic YouTube channels which taught me more than enough to get started. 60 COFFS COAST focus
Did you have a background in cooking and food before going into making chocolate or has it always just been chocolate for you?
working with food, and know a fair amount of flavour combinations. But at the end of the day, I might see a product, taste it, and decide it might go well with chocolate. As far as recipes go, I have adapted plenty of recipes I’m a Chef, and I also have a certificate in in kitchens to suit my taste preferences over pastry, but not much experience in pastry the years, and so I start with a basic idea that as Coffs has a very has worked before, and small need for pastry adapt it over an unlimited chefs. We hear you have some pretty interesting flavour combinations, what are some of the most unusual combinations you’ve come up with? Currently I’m playing with black garlic, black truffle and blue cheese as some new flavours, and as I have only done these a couple of

“smooth” which is what we recognise as chocolate.
First, we have to source the cocoa beans. Once we have the beans, we roast them, remove the husk, and then the inside, known as the nibs, goes into a stone grinder, with some sugar, and a little bit of cocoa butter to
What are some of your all-time favourites that you’ve created?
My definite favourite is the chilli chocolates, as they just work so well together, and interestingly, I’m not too fond of sweet foods. But I do love the espresso martini bonbon, or the whiskey. If I was to look at it from my customers perspective, they all love the salted caramel bonbon, and the Kraken chocolate
was also a big hit. What are some of your goals or aspirations for the future of your chocolate business? I hope to be able to open a factory once we are bigger, and have a café within, where I can have our hot chocolates, made with 100% chocolate, plenty of pastries utilising our chocolate, and savoury dining options that also incorporate chocolate, for example the classic chicken mole. But for now, I just hope to get to a point where I don’t need to continue working as a chef. Where can people find your chocolates, and where can we follow your journey or get in touch? I’m at the Harbourside Markets most Sundays, Bellingen Markets, and a few other less regular markets around locally. We are also being stocked in a few stores around the area such as; Happy Frog, Kaleidoscope, BP Urunga, The Big Banana, Bluebottles Woolgoolga, Sweet Bellingen lolly shop, Kombu Bellingen, a new place in Nambucca, a couple of new places in Grafton, Macksville lolly shop, and maybe a couple more…) Thanks David. NICOLA DAWSON We sat down with Nicola Dawson to talk about her success in the recent Flathead Tournament held in Urunga. Nicola not only conquered her first-ever fishing competition but did so with style, taking home the trophy alongside her partner, Macca. Nicola shares the highlights, challenges, and the thrill of securing her win, shedding light on the unique camaraderie and sense of community that makes fishing competitions a truly exceptional experience.
H
ey Nicola, you recently competed in the Anual Urunga Estuary Sport Fishing Flathead Tournament, tell us how you went?
I ended up coming first in the female angler division. I completed the competition with my partner, Macca, and we were entered into the team competition as well as individually, and also the division section and I was lucky enough to win the female divison. It was the first competition I have ever gone into 68 COFFS COAST focus
for fishing and it was exciting and a great turnout and it was great to do this with Macca, my captain. It was the hardest and most consistent I have ever fished before and it was rewarding to come out on top with a trophy.
We made the most of it and the highlight was definitely being able to spend time with our mates, with most of us fishing as couples.
The competition spanned over one and half days in Urunga and the conditions were
great, but it was a bit windy which made it a bit of a “hard slog”. We made the most of it though and the highlight was definitely being able to spend time with our mates, with most of us fishing as couples. It’s really a great way to get all the ladies involved. It's had a majority of men involved but I have met a lot of female anglers now and they are really giving the guys a run for their money!
It’s had a majority of men involved but I have met a lot of female anglers now and they are really giving the guys a run for their money! The juniors competition was a standout of girls and they did well this year too. There was over 350 competitors and around 30 of those were females. What was a particular highlight for you over the weekend?
The highlight for me was how much of a community sport it was and how social and fun it was, staying with friends, sharing stories and enjoying being a part of it. The cherry on top for me was also winning the medal for catching the biggest flathead The cherry on on a hard body lure top for me was which was a really cool also winning the moment for me. medal for catching
competition scene? I would say that my love of fishing is more so a love of spending time with the guys in my life. Growing up I spent time with my Dad by going on fishing and camping trips in the Northern Territory and now I am shacked up with a guy who is extremely passionate about fishing so it is a way of spending time with him now. From there he really got me into it and I have picked up on things on the way and it has become a fun hobby now. We love going out on our boat together and just having competitions between ourselves. the best! Its fun to boast in a fun way with everyone else.
The weekend is run over a day and a half and there are strict times on when you can start and stop fishing. The scoring is around the size of the fish so an undersized flathead scores 5 points and then its run on a scale system and anything above 36 cm gains more points. I was lucky on the first day when I caught my “PB flatty “(personal best flathead) I caught a 74cm flathead and that
What upcoming competitions are you looking forward to competing in the coming year? I would definitely say I would do this competition again and I think I’ll have some competition coming up with how well the juniors are performing, so I may have to work even harder to keep my title. Thanks Nicola. COFFS COAST focus 69

The team from Platinum Beauty are thrilled to announce the official opening of their brand new location at the Bailey Centre in Coffs Harbour. The team have poured their hearts into crafting a warm, inviting haven for you to relax, rejuvenate and most importantly, to transform you into the best version of yourself. We caught up with owner Kiara Lindsay to find out more.
H
i Kiara, it's been a while since we last caught up with you. What’s been going on? Well, this year has been a year of leaps and bounds for me. I’ve stepped out of my comfort zone to create something that I feel women need (myself included), a place where you can focus on you, your happiness, your confidence and your sanity because as women we always put our needs last. The space we have been busy creating is more than just a ‘clinic’ to us, it’s what has helped each of us in so many ways, more than just beauty.
exclusive utopia - something extremely unique that you need to experience! Our bigger premises provided us with the opportunity to expand the team and the services we offer, focusing on relaxation, results and a blissful customer experience - ensuring Platinum is the place you love and trust. Tell us more about the fit out and who was involved? It is a massive process to design and create a new clinic. I am blessed to have an incredible support team, that consists of family, friends, trades and the Platinum Beauty ladies.
After being at full capacity for some time now in our little salon tucked away at Nautilus, we saw how high the demand is for what we offer and needed more room, so it was time to go bigger and better!
There is something special about reflecting on this whole process and how incredible every single person is, that contributed to the fit out. I feel honoured that they stood by me every step of the way. Our vision was to create an alluring and tranquil space. The décor and colour concept reflect this, creating a calming and inviting energy.
Bigger and better is exactly what we have done, as soon as you enter our clinic you are immersed in luxury, escaping the outside world by transferring you into a safe, peaceful and

Tell us about the team and their areas of expertise. There’s myself, Kiara the Owner/ Director who started a lash business and then transformed it into the clinic it is today. This started when I saw a gap in the market for body sculpting. I also personally suffer from breakouts with my skin, which are painful. I wanted to learn how to manage this and assist women with skin issues and educate them on how to treat their skin, maintaining their results. Melissa (Operations Manager) has been using skincare since she was 12 and so has a wealth of knowledge and experience about the importance of skin health and benefits of looking after your skin. Revive IV AND RECOVERY CENTRE
A
t Revive IV Wellness we’re all about embracing the individuals’ journey towards wellbeing, recovery and overall health. Here are some of the therapies on offer.
IV Vitamin Therapy, or “vitamin drips” as some call it, is a remarkable approach in allowing your body to enjoy the goodness of essential vitamins, minerals, amino acids, and electrolytes. Administered by our skilled healthcare professionals, this therapy involves delivering a personalised blend of nutrients directly into your bloodstream through a gentle IV line. IV Vitamin Therapy presents a promising alternative to traditional oral supplement, particularly for those with specific health needs or compromised nutrient absorption. It’s swift and effective delivery of essential vitamins and minerals into the bloodstream are taken up by the body. It is crucial, however, to approach this therapy as a complimentary strategy rather than a replacement for a balanced diet. Consulting with one of our qualified healthcare professionals before embarking on our treatment is essential in assisting the best health outcome on your journey toward wellness. Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) The intermittent administration of 100% oxygen at increased atmospheric pressure.
HBOT is a way of supporting our body’s own natural healing process by providing pure oxygen to our bodies under pressure, which can expedite the healing of wounds both internal and external. Without oxygen, we would not survive, so imagine how much good we could do with 100% oxygen! Here are some of those benefits; the ability to reverse hypoxia (low oxygen levels) which improves cellular energy production, decrease inflammation, swelling and pain, stimulate an exponential release of stem cells (after approx. 40 consecutive treatments), improvement of immune function and ability to fight infection, and help regulate lymphatic drainage which may result in removing toxins and waste from our bodies. Red Light Therapy Many people link Red Light Therapy to improving their appearance by removing fine lines and wrinkles, however, did you know it also stimulates cellular function? Cellular function is the key to unlocking our optimal energy levels, so why wouldn’t we want to feel energised and rejuvenated from the inside out. Potential outcomes of Red-Light Therapy include reduction in inflammation, chronic joint pain, healing of wounds at a deeper tissue and nerve level by increasing cell function which is also essential for immune health. Our cells operate like a battery system, and we need to recharge batteries for optimal function, right? This is where PEMF comes into play. When our cells are operating efficiently at full charge, we see an increase in cellular healing and development. PEMF use may result in; quicker recovery time from injury, a correction in cellular dysfunction within our bodies, natural increase in energy levels, promoting cellular recharge and reduction in inflammation and pain from acute and chronic injuries. Sauna and Cold Plunge Private Studio With growing popularity in the fitness industry Revive will soon introduce their new Sauna and Cold plunge private studio space. Alternating between hot and cold temperatures can stimulate blood flow and improve circulation. The potential benefits of this therapy include increased energy, metabolic rate and brown fat activation, improved immune function, stress reduction, improved sleep quality and mood boosting effects. These treatments are very effective on their own and can also have great benefits when used in combination to achieve overall health, healing, recovery and longevity. With this knowledge, I’m sure you could imagine what an exciting addition it will be to your wellness and recovery. Revive IV Wellness would love to be a part of your health and wellness journey! Do Your Core Beliefs Limit Your Life?
What beliefs do you strongly hold? These beliefs, called core beliefs, might be rigid and inflexible and maintained by focusing on information that supports the belief and often we ignore evidence that contradicts it.
T
hese core beliefs are central to our main ideas about ourselves, others, and the world. We view ourselves, others, and the world from these beliefs. These are assumptions and often underlie our automatic thought system. Core beliefs can be both positive and selflimiting. A positive core belief might be that most humans are kind, or I can reach my goals. On the other hand, self-limiting core beliefs might trick our minds into seeing the world as full of hopelessness and less full of possibility. Common core beliefs might be - I am an outsider, I do not belong. This can be from early childhood when you felt rejected by family or later at school rejected by peers. You carry these beliefs well into adulthood. In adulthood you might avoid engagement with others, often fearing rejection, or the other extreme is trying to fit into the group and be the perfect group member. Another common core belief is I am not good enough, a consistent feeling of not being as good as others, and not measuring up. Often traced back to childhood, over-critical adults in your life, and peers at school. This belief can lead you to overcompensate - the people pleaser, you might push yourself too hard. This belief also drives imposter syndrome, the constant feeling you are a fraud and people
will find out you do not know what you are doing. The world is dangerous core belief leads to worry, and restrictive activities to avoid risk and we seek constant or excessive reassurance to alleviate our anxiety. This is the glass-half-full belief, overestimating negative outcomes and underestimating our ability to conquer the challenge and cope. The core belief that you must be perfect is a relative of I am not good enough. Perfectionists have unhealthy and unrealistic expectations of themselves, often focusing on flaws and imperfections. A perfectionist’s relationships or health might suffer because of this core belief. Even when parents are trying their best, sometimes challenges get in the way. This can have a child feeling judged, I am not important or feeling less than others. The same is true in friendship groups. As we get older, we often look for people who align with our thoughts, values, and beliefs, referred to as finding our tribe. Establishing new core beliefs takes a change of mindset. See if you can identify your core beliefs both positive and self-limiting. For the self-limiting beliefs see if you can find the moments in your past that match up to those feelings of that belief. It may be your family never attended a school performance, making
you think ‘I’m not important’, whether this was said explicitly or implicitly or maybe your parents separated when you were younger and you now think I’m not worthy of love. This is often played out in your adult romantic relationships. Beliefs come in pairs, so when you have identified your self-limiting beliefs look for the evidence to build up the positive belief rather than the self-limiting belief. For example, I am not good enough belief, and the opposite pair is I am good enough, look for ways you have risen to face challenges, helped others, and the positive relationships in your life. Breaking the cycle of self-limiting beliefs takes time, however, slowly you will begin to pay more focused attention to the positive beliefs. Reflect and keep your perceived self-limiting beliefs in check, keep them in perspective. This is the game changer to adjust your core belief system towards a more truthful and selfcompassionate view of yourself. The beliefs that will move you towards your dreams and goals in life. Until next time, be kind and gentle with yourself. Julie Thomas MCouns, BPsychSC, BEd(ECTeach) Member - Australian Counselling Association Member of WPATH, AUSPATH COFFS COAST focus 83

H
i Ellie. Can you tell us about how the idea for YOUthSpeak came about? The project initially began as a passion project for me during maternity leave from my role as a Youth Worker. It sort of came together through a few different meaningful conversations I was having. One was with a young person who wrote to me in my Councillor role to advocate for skate park upgrades in Urunga; one was with my fellow colleagues in the youth sector about how the timeframes for grants usually leads to the lack of meaningful youth engagement or input; one was with my manager about my desire to stay connected during my time on maternity leave; and one with some of my fellow Councillors and the new Council executive about how we can increase youth input on Council decisions that impact young people into the future. We created a survey that asked young people to share their perspectives about their biggest concerns and aspirations, feelings of the future and ideas for projects within the Shire. I used the results to generate 84 COFFS COAST focus

Following the report, I was successful in securing a grant through the NSW Office of Regional Youth to progress some of the ideas that came out of the survey. We learn how both recipients and volunteers see benefits come from the friendship and shared experiences.
H
i Lesley. Can you explain the Aged Care Volunteer Visitors Scheme (ACVVS) to us?
The Aged Care Volunteer Visitors Scheme, formerly known as the Community Visitors Scheme (CVS) commenced in 1992-93. The objective of the ACVVS is to support older people who are socially isolated by matching each older person with a volunteer, for friendship. Volunteers can visit on a weekly or fortnightly basis. The ACVVS is a free service and aims to improve quality of life for the aged care residential or home care recipients participating in the scheme. It has shown to bring a general feeling of wellbeing, with maintained or increased independence; increased self-esteem and sense of purpose; a sense of connectedness to the community; culture and identity; a sense of connectedness to other older people living in the residential aged care home; reduced feelings of loneliness and isolation and reduced feelings of 86 COFFS COAST focus

Could you share a bit about your role with ACVVS? Being an accredited aged care trainer with over 20 years industry experience, my work is to understand people’s needs. I am responsible for coordinating the program, accepting referrals for eligible recipients, matching them to ACVVS Volunteers and providing ongoing support.

In choosing our volunteers we look for people who have a genuine empathy and warmth towards older people, can commit to at least 12 months of regular visiting, and are inclusive, patient and kind. What is the process of matching volunteers to residents?
As the coordinator, my role is to gather information from a potential volunteer to ensure I make a good match between them and the older person. I consider matters such as; the volunteer (and older person’s) backgrounds, interests, culture or diversity group. I also work closely with the referrer to understand more about the older person. The goal is to make a good match to ensure an ongoing and happy friendship. How can people volunteer with ACVVS?
Are there any particular requirements? Volunteers come from all walks of life and give of their time for various reasons. Being understanding and kind with a caring heart and being willing to listen are just a few attributes that contribute to being an aged care volunteer visitor. There is no experience needed and volunteers receive training to understand the requirements and responsibilities of their role. This allows them to enter the community and move into their volunteer role, with confidence. In addition, as the coordinator, I am available to provide support when required.
Peter brings his kindness and patience to the table where Karl brings his eagerness and his sense of humour, it’s heartwarming watching this friendship grow.
Are there any stories of past and currently matched volunteers and residents that you can share with us? We currently have a wonderful match in place. Sam Breakspear, Lifestyle Supervisor from Royal Freemans’ Benevolent Institution (RFBI) contacted me seeking a male volunteer who would be a positive companion for her resident Karl Patulny. Having no volunteers to meet the friendship needs of Karl, I visited the Coffs Harbour Men’s Shed, explained the program, and asked if anyone was willing to join the ACVVS team. I was fortunate to see a hand go up from the group and Peter Pike, a Men’s Shed member, volunteered to join the ACVVS. Peter is the perfect friend to Karl. Peter and Karl have built a positive friendship and the two are spending quality time together weekly, chatting and reminiscing about days gone by and shared interests, while they sand small wooden toy cars, add the moving parts, and finish off with a clear coat of varnish. With the help of the Men’s Shed Coffs Harbour, Manager Robert Houston has provided the timber and templates and Karl traces the templates weekly, looking forward to his next visit from Peter. There is currently a steady
stream of wooden cars in progress and I have coined Peter and Karl as being the ‘external toy makers’ of the Men’s Shed. These visits have enhanced Karl’s life experiences, and he has a renewed sense of interest and a new meaning to his life, doing something he loves while experiencing a sense of companionship that makes him feel involved.
incredible value to volunteers too. Many volunteers do not have contact with older people because of distance, older people passing away or various other reasons. The connection with an older person also brings joy to the lives of our volunteers where volunteers are provided with a new dimension of experience in their lives. That provides a sense of satisfaction of giving of their time to enhance the life experience of another person.
Sam Breakspear, Lifestyle Supervisor from RFBI in Coffs Harbour says ‘My experience with ACVVS has always been positive. MY FRENCH Monon Piat started her journey as a hairdresser in her home country France at a prestigious salon in Lille, and after falling in love with the Australian lifestyle she decided to set down roots here and has opened her new salon in Bellingen; Pardon My French.

the challenge of securing a position at the most prestigious salon in Lille, I offered to volunteer and learn essential skills. After a year of volunteering every Saturday for two years, L'atelier de Coiffure welcomed me as an apprentice.
This sparked my addiction to the endless creativity that hair offers. I started paying attention to people everywhere, asking myself, 'What could I do to improve their hair?'
I came to Australia in 2012 on a one-year working holiday visa. When I first arrived, I lived in remote towns working picking fruit for the first year and fell in love with the Aussie countryside. I loved Australia so much that I decided to apply for residency and made Australia my home. I moved to Brisbane in 2014 as I was able to secure sponsorship with a salon in the city. I enjoyed
an you tell us a bit about how you got started in hairdressing?
My journey into the world of hairdressing began when a good friend asked me to style her hair before her dance class when I was 15. I created a bun with lots of twisted strands of hair and she loved it, leading to a weekly ritual of styling her hair every Tuesday.
Determined to pursue my passion, I decided to find a hairdressing apprenticeship. Despite 88 COFFS COAST focus

my time in Brisbane and built up a loyal client base, many of whom became very good friends. While I was in Brisbane, a good friend raved about growing up in Bellingen and it sounded like such an idyllic place to live. As soon as I had the opportunity to leave Brisbane, I closed my salon and drove to Bellingen to experience this magical place I'd heard about. So you stumbled upon the space you've opened your salon in, how did it all come about? When I arrived in Bellingen, I drove straight into the Old Butter Factory on Mill Street before even driving into town. Coincidently, I parked my van right outside the space that would become Pardon My French Salon without even knowing it. The place felt so
I love everything about hairdressing. In one session, hairdressers get to share so much – teaching clients about hair care, styles, and trends, having hands-on contact, and creating a safe space for conversation. Nothing is taboo in a hair salon, and we build lasting friendships. It's intimate and rewarding. Seeing clients leave the salon, happy with their new hairstyle, cut, or colour and feeling great about themselves, is incredibly rewarding. I view my clients as canvases; creating a new style for everyone is an art that I find intoxicating! Hair fashion is ever-changing, and I need to consistently train and update my skills to keep up with the latest trends. Since COVID, online classes have made it easy to learn new skills I have been very and techniques. special, and I knew I wanted to have a salon here. It was clear the universe wanted me here because everything just fell into place so effortlessly. I met Kat at the Woodcraft Gallery and got chatting about rentals and she insisted I talk to Dan at the Old Butter Factory Cafe. Dan had a space available and showed it to me straight away. The space was ideal and I immediately seized the opportunity and the rest, as they say, is history. What do you love most about hairdressing? What inspires you and keeps you passionate about what you do?
After living and working in different parts of the world, what are the biggest challenges and highlights of where you're at now? How has your clientele and styles changed over the years?
My biggest challenge was working in Australia while learning to speak English. When I first arrived, the only thing I could say was, "Hello, my name is Manon." I worked in various jobs, including fruit picking and a bakery over the first year and moved to Melbourne in the second year to secure a job in a salon. As my English was still very limited, it was very difficult to find a salon willing to take me on with the language barrier. Finally, I secured work in a salon in Port Melbourne. It was a challenging time, but I loved every minute of it and I am so grateful for the opportunity they gave me. I was able to learn all my English hairdressing vocabulary during
that time which allowed me to continue my hairdressing career. My approach to hair has changed so much over the years since I first started my apprenticeship. I have been very lucky to study under some amazing mentors and have been able to refine my skills across two countries. French techniques and styles differ from Australian methods. In France, we use a hand-painted technique rather than foils. I had to adapt my technique to learn the Australian method of foiling. I'm grateful to have learned various ways of creating and styling hair, combining the skills from both countries to bring the best to my salon and clients. Do you specialise in any particular area or style of hairdressing? What do you most enjoy creating? I love the freedom to create the best look for each person. The creativity of cutting, with just a pair of scissors and a comb, can completely change someone's look. Combining colour treatments with a new cut to create a complete makeover is a passion of mine. In France, I was in charge of all the client makeovers. This has stayed with me! I particularly enjoy doing weddings, and 'Upstyle' is now one of my biggest passions. Luckily, I was trained by the French Champion for 'Upstyle' during my apprenticeship. Where might we find you when you're not doing hair? When I'm not doing hair, I'm hanging out with my dog Dooza at the river or beach or starting a new hobby. I begin a new hobby every week, and my clients will be familiar with my latest half-finished mosaic out front! What are some of your plans and goals for the future? In the future, I would like to take on an apprentice to pass on my passion for hairdressing and help someone new in their career, as I was helped. Hairdressing has provided me with amazing opportunities and experiences, and I would love to pay that forward. Doing hair always lifts me up, no matter how I might feel that day. For me, it's the best medicine! Thanks Manon. COFFS COAST focus 89

an you tell us a little bit about your business? I created BabyDink because I was tired of seeing parents struggling with wraps and carriers not designed with their newborn in mind. Known as the “No-Wrap Wrap” my BabyDink baby carriers are designed to be worn like a t-shirt. Unlike any other product on the market, BabyDink has no clips, buckles or tricky tutorials to master. Effortless babywearing so parents can have their hands free while keeping baby calm and close. Over time, we’ve adapted the product slightly, introducing a handy mobile phone pocket that parents can reach when “nap trapped” or on the go with multiple children. Sustainability has always been a priority for me in business and life, so I’ve relentlessly pursued that and BabyDink is ethically and sustainably made using BCorp Certified manufacturing to the highest global standards. Born from a place of connection and love, I wanted my product to be the most natural and functional product for a new parent. It needed to be a design that mums could easily wear and use for themselves at home in those early days. After being involved in a car accident when he was a toddler, which left him paralysed from the chest down, Ben started playing wheelchair rugby in Coffs Harbour when he was 16. That first contact with peers in a team sport setting changed his life.
“The University was really supportive, flexible and accommodating when I had to travel around for competitions.”
“I had never been connected to networks for other disabled people. Those men not only taught me about wheelchair rugby but also about living with disability and navigating the world.” While competing for NSW, Ben studied a Bachelor of Psychology with Honours at Southern Cross University’s Coffs Harbour 94 COFFS COAST focus

After graduating, Ben moved to Brisbane in 2010 with the goal of selection in the Australian Steelers Team for the London 2012 Paralympic Games. In just two years, he not only made it to London, but his team was undefeated in competition and became
equals to the Olympic athletes.”
“The Paralympic village was like being on another planet where there’s nobody around except disabled people. It was just the complete opposite of what you experience in your dayto-day life, where you’re trying to navigate a world that’s not designed for you. I felt there that disability was just part of our identity, and everybody celebrated it.”
RANKINGS EVIDENCE OF SOUTHERN CROSS VALUES AND IMPACT FOR A BETTER WORLD In 2014, Ben was honoured with the Medal of the Order of Australia in recognition of his remarkable service to sport. Looking back and remembering his childhood, Ben believes disabled people are in a better position nowadays, both in terms of acceptance and awareness. However, there is still work to be done. “The biggest challenges back then and even today are around social barriers and attitudes towards disabled people and the way that flows through into physical barriers, such as places not being accessible for wheelchair users and people with other disabilities.” “A lot of those barriers are easily resolved just through a bit of education and willingness from people to treat each other as equals.” Those barriers transcend Paralympic sports and, in particular, wheelchair rugby. “When people see wheelchair rugby, they fall in love with it and want to get involved. However, the biggest barrier is people not knowing that it exists. We have the platform of the Paralympic Games every four years, but outside of that, most sports for disabled athletes and para-sports don’t attract much attention or financial support.” The next Paralympic Games will be held in 2024 in Paris, France.
Two recently released rankings have underlined the contribution of Southern Cross University both globally and closer to home.
A
new ranking system by the Australian Financial Review (AFR) placed Southern Cross 6th from 40 institutions for equity and access. Southern Cross also ranked strongly for student career outcomes (13th) and research (21st). In recent years, Southern Cross University has fundamentally redesigned its approach to teaching and evaluation, introducing new levels of student support with evidence-based outcomes.
The University has pioneered a unique approach called the Southern Cross Model which supports success across the student population and crucially empowers students who face the barrier of disadvantage. Pro Vice-Chancellor (Academic Quality) Professor Thomas Roche said: “Student success, or pass rates, as measured by the completion rate of subjects, is now close to 90% – an increase of 23% on success rates prior to the model being introduced. Also, across the institution, Grade Point Averages – or GPAs – are up. More of our students are succeeding and getting better grades. “We are particularly proud that not only is this helping the majority of our students succeed, but it is helping those who are often underrepresented
in our universities and are at most disadvantage.” Meanwhile, the QS Sustainability Rankings (2024) has placed the University among, or near the top 200 on a series of key measures out of a global field of 1,400 institutions. Southern Cross University’s Deputy ViceChancellor (Research and Academic Capability) Professor Mary Spongberg said staff and students were bonded around the need to address the threat facing global societies and ecosystems. “Our researchers are doing genuinely heroic, world-leading research on issues as broad as the health of the Great Barrier Reef, regenerative agriculture and growing the circular economy,” Professor Spongberg said. “We share their frustration that more hasn’t been done earlier - that we are now dealing with a full-blown climate emergency. “At Southern Cross University our values commit us to be bold and we have put sustainability both at the heart of our research strategy and how we operate as an institution.” She said the strong sustainability focus in the operation of the University included about $1.4 million invested in solar across campuses, moving the vehicle fleet increasingly to electric and hybrid, and enhanced recycling programs, including fabrics. Meet Savannah, a 14-year-old rugby player whose journey from backyard passes to the Waratahs training ground is nothing short of inspiring. We sat down with Savannah to talk about her love for the game, her recent success of being selected to train with the Waratahs, her aspirations for the future and from playing with friends on Friday nights to embracing the challenge of professional training.
H
ey Savannah, tell us about how you got into rugby and how long you have been playing?
I grew up watching my brother play and train every week and thought it looked like a good sport to get involved in. I have been playing rugby union for two years but spent a lot of time passing a footy in the backyard with my brother Reid. I also started playing with some friends from school on a Friday night and participating in school rugby events. What position do you play and why do you like playing that position? I play five-eight but can play anywhere in the back line if they need me to. I like playing five-eight the most because it is the position that I am best at and have had the most practice in. It will be interesting to see what the coaches think and if they move us around during practice as I may end up liking another position. What does it mean to you personally to have the opportunity to train with the Waratahs, and how do you think this experience will impact your development as a rugby player? To be given the chance to train with the Waratahs is an honour that holds different meanings for each individual fortunate enough to have this opportunity. For me, it is a chance to learn from, and be mentored by, some of the best rugby players in the game. It also shows that my hard work and dedication to the sport is being noticed. These mentors provide valuable advice and support to help the players overcome hurdles and make better decisions about their future in the sport. Who are some of the other players that have been selected for this rare opportunity and how did you all feel when receiving the news?
Some other players are Miranda, Poppi, Sophia and Sienna. All the players felt very happy and excited to be able to have the opportunity to train and play with the Waratahs. I felt very lucky to have been picked and given a chance to be involved with the Waratahs training program as well as playing with the 14-year-old girls team. To have fabulous coaches Danny Knight and Mitch Walton as well as having Donna Norton as our manager has made everything easy. I would also like to thank my local club, The Marlins for all the mentoring and support from the committee and players up to now. Rugby is known for its physical demand. How do you prepare yourself both physically and mentally for the game?
game. From enhancing speed and agility to perfecting tackling techniques and improving strategic decision-making abilities. I am looking forward to learning all of this and training with professional coaches and with other players who are also dedicated to the sport and want to put the time and effort into learning and progressing. In terms of your position and playing style, are there role models or players you look up to within the Waratahs or in the broader rugby community? I look up to my brother, my team mates and in general I stay and watch all games on a Saturday to learn techniques from other players to try improve myself. MAINTAINING ROUTINE, RITUALS AND RHYTHM
A
t Milestones Early Learning Centres we offer the Lifelong Learning Curriculum, Australia’s most contemporary and progressive early years curriculum for children aged from birth to five years. Our goal is to grow and instil a lifelong love of learning in every child. Our educators are trained to use the Circle of Security in partnership with families to support and maintain your own routines and rituals. “A familiar routine plays a significant role in a child’s healthy social-emotional development, stimulating their growth and fostering confidence, curiosity and social skills,” explains Dr Lesley Jones, creator of the Lifelong Learning Curriculum.
“Young children are born to learn, and we ensure that consistent routines at our centres support children in their learning rather than disrupting valuable and enjoyable experiences.” “Our educators thoughtfully manage routines and rituals throughout the day, creating moments rich in potential for interactive learning and developing secure, solid relationships for children.” A feature of our Lifelong Learning Curriculum which many families find fascinating is Play Schemas. Connecting with your children through play schemas at home also supports your child’s holistic well-being and development by noticing repeated and persistent patterns of behaviour, deep fascinations and curiosities.
A way to further provide opportunities for your child to support the play schema of transportation is for children to have access to items where they can place objects, such as opened gift boxes, baskets or buckets. These activities will support your child’s innate interests as they are currently developing an understanding of the world around them by engaging in schematic play in action. To enquire about enrolments at any of our Milestones Early Learning Centres on the Coffs Coast, please call 1800 CHILDCARE or visit www.milestones.com.au to book family tours online at our North Boambee, Emerald Beach, South Grafton, Emerald Beach or Woolgoolga! JASON BURLEY from BURLEY AGED CARE ADVICE
C
ould you share the journey of how Burley Aged Care Advice originated? Certainly. Originally from Dorrigo, I spent two
decades as a Financial Planner in Sydney before deciding to return to the Mid North Coast, settling in Emerald Beach. Drawing from my financial planning background, I saw an opportunity to provide specialised assistance in aged care advice. This led to the establishment of Burley Aged Care Advice. Could you explain the role and purpose of Burley Aged Care Advice? At Burley Aged Care Advice, my focus is 104 COFFS COAST focus
on helping clients navigate the complex and often emotional decisions associated with aged care. Understanding how the chosen aged care facility impacts finances upon entry and beyond is crucial for peace of mind. This involves working with clients to identify goals and objectives, exploring various options for covering aged care costs. I conduct a detailed comparison, analysing the impact on ongoing fees, Centrelink payments, taxation, and estate planning. The culmination is a comprehensive report called a Statement of Advice, guiding clients through findings and serving as a reference point moving forward. What is the process you follow in providing assistance to your clients?
Typically, I conduct two key meetings. The first is a fact-finding session, gathering essential information. Subsequently, there is an advice presentation meeting where we go through the Statement of Advice. Both can be conducted in person or via video conferencing, offering flexibility, especially for families with members living at a distance who wish to be included in the discussions. Could you describe the typical clients who seek your assistance? My typical clients are individuals and families in need of guidance with residential aged care, whether for themselves or their spouse. These situations are often emotionally charged, needing care and empathy. Additionally, I often work with adult children
comprehensively, ensuring a thorough understanding of available choices. I help identify all options available for funding aged care costs and if a spouse is staying home, funding their ongoing costs as well. My clients then have a clear course of action, allowing them to make aged care funding decisions confidently. An example would be finding the balance between paying enough of a lump sum towards the room costs (with the aim of minimising fees), but ensuring sufficient savings are retained to meet other ongoing fees and living expenses. I typically provide 5-year cash flow and asset projections to ensure an aged care resident (and spouse) will not exhaust their assets and find themselves in a hardship situation, and / or needing to borrow from family. My clients can expect no financial surprises whilst living in aged care. A common ‘surprise’ for clients who have not sought advice is where you potentially lose the age pension after two years of living in care if you have retained your home. This can have major consequence on cash flow (an income stream loss of up to $57,028 p.a. for a couple) and should be I assist clients planned for.
in evaluating various options, such as leaving the home to a child through estate planning, renting it, or having a child live in it at a reduced rate.
dealing with parents requiring aged care. This is also an emotional time, which can be complicated by sibling disagreements, and my role is to separate fact from fiction, gaining consensus on necessary steps.
Can you provide some examples of ways you add value and assist your clients? I help clients explore options
Another example is my experience liaising with Services Australia. I conduct my own assessment on what aged care fees will be payable (based on means-test calculations) and the impact on your age pension following a move into care. My assessments are based on each of the options I consider, allowing you to see what you need to pay, and what pension you will receive before deciding on how you are going to structure your finances and pay for care.
Can you elaborate on the importance of seeking professional advice in the aged care planning process, especially in avoiding common misconceptions? Certainly. One common misconception is the belief that selling your home is mandatory when moving into aged care. I assist clients in evaluating various options, such as leaving the home to a child through estate planning, renting it, or having a child live in it at a reduced rate. By comparing the financial outcomes of these choices, clients can make informed decisions aligned with their preferences and financial goals. How can individuals reach out to engage your services? You can contact me on 0431 414 799 or email to arrange a 15-minute call or video conference (using platforms like Teams or Zoom). This initial discussion allows us to delve into their specific situation and explore how I can be of assistance. At the end of this conversation, I provide a fixed-rate fee quote. Clients can then decide whether they would like to move forward and arrange the factfinding meeting. In conclusion, Burley Aged Care Advice serves as a valuable resource for individuals and families navigating the complexities of aged care decisions. Through a personalised and empathetic approach, the aim is to empower clients to make informed choices that align with their unique circumstances and financial aspirations. As an Accredited Aged Care Professional TM, I can provide advice to help you navigate the rules and consider strategies that may best meet your needs. This advice is general in nature and everyone’s circumstances are different. So it’s important to speak to someone like myself who is a licenced financial adviser (I am an Authorised Representative of Count Financial Limited AFSL 227232). Thanks Jason.

aking to the sounds of the kookaburras and lorikeets, Annie has to pinch herself to check she's not dreaming.
Here she is in her beautiful new home, where every giant window and every room of the house lends itself to breathtaking country vistas. Here she is living her lifelong dream that was wistfully sketched out on paper so many years ago. Annie's new home is both beautiful and unique. It uses framing by Raleigh Frame and Truss and Colorbond installed by Oceanic Roofing to create its unusual and intricate roofline.
on cold winter nights. "Building my dream home was always going to be a creative exercise along with the practical considerations of living with my two pups (it's their home too)!" Annie enthuses. "The design of it captures stunning country views from every room." While it's been a long journey from sketchpad to reality for Annie, once the Toscan Homes team came on board, it was full steam ahead.
"Toscan work with the most extraordinarily meticulous and talented tradies and has done for a long time," she says. "They are professional and take great pride in what they do. They have a great camaraderie since they have all worked together for so many years."
Mal, especially, got on the tools to add finishing touches and fix sticky issues, and the Toscan Team were always available whenever I needed advice on everything from turf laying to gardening and equipment.
Step inside and every room is designed to create a sense of peace and tranquillity, every space blending seamlessly into the surrounding countryside.
"I am so happy I chose Toscan Homes," says Annie. "I love that the reality is so much more beautiful than I had imagined 40 years ago."
High ceilings combine with smooth lines and finishes to add a luxury feel, while hybrid flooring by Carpet Court adds a superb finish that's both long lasting and easy to maintain.
Annie found the building process a smooth one. She pays much tribute to the Toscan Team for delivering her dream home on time and to such an amazingly high standard.
Thoughtfully designed for maximum luxury, the three-bedroom home boasts a huge double entry ensuite and a walk-in robe fit for a queen, plus a double-sided gas fireplace that stretches from the main living area to a second sitting area. It offers several perfect vantage points for keeping cozy
"Any little issues that came up with this bespoke home were brainstormed and fixed without fuss - and always ended up better than the original," she adds. Annie was also thrilled with the quality of tradespeople that helped bring her dream to life.
Annie will miss her daily chats with carpenter Mark Green and his apprentice son Lachlan, who worked diligently on the bearers and joists, frames, doors, windows and more; each job with the same level of perfectionism and enthusiasm.
Annie was also impressed with the high level of skill from brickies Norm, Dan and John, Billy and the plastering crew and Jeff's crew of painters. Rob, Todd and Mal from Toscan Homes are also given special mention by Annie for going above and beyond throughout the build. “Mal, especially, got on the tools to add finishing touches and fix sticky issues, and the Toscan Team were always available whenever I needed advice on everything from turf laying to gardening and equipment.” COFFS COAST focus 111
OUR Favourite Builds of 2023
“I’ve had a few favourites this year, but I really enjoyed building the Azad family home at Bonville. They were lovely people to deal with and the large build included a lot of interesting components, including the spectacular pool and the use of a lot of natural materials like sandstone and hardwoods. It’s always fantastic to see a happy client upon reaching completion.” - Todd
“I would have to say Annie Hutton’s home would be my favourite build for 2023. lt was a technical build with its unusual roof line and floor plan. It was my standout as the owner was so easy to deal with and organised - she had been planning this house for the past 40 years. This made the job flow exceptionally well and easy.” - Mal
“All our builds are design and construct and therefore each is very unique. But if I was to select one that really stood out it would be the Robson project in Sawtell. A fantastic beach/Hamptons style project that we built for a good mate of mine and his wife. We won the HIA Custom Built Home of the Year Award in its category and to make it even better, they were present at the awards – it was a special night.” - Rob
2024 is shaping up to be a big year for the Toscan Homes team.

These generous, three-bedroom homes are fully accessible for all abilities and offer the perfect place to enjoy a luxurious and carefree retirement. Also in the works is this stunning project offering uninterrupted views across the Korora coastline and mountain ranges, via the use of large, seamless glass windows. Custom built to meet the needs of an expanding family, it features an internal lift, exposed iron staircase and burnished concrete floors. Balancing warmth with an industrial feel, this home also features recycled bricks and a mix of hardwood floors and cladding.

T
he winning home, a Hamptons style retreat in Sawtell, is a stunning testament to the quality and luxury that Toscan Homes is renowned for. Owners David and Helen Robson were thrilled to join the Toscan team for the win and celebrate at the recent awards ceremony. “We absolutely love our new home,” David and Helen enthuse. “Our kitchen and living room is where we spend most of our time. We love that it’s open and airy and captures the sea
breezes. We love sitting at our pop-up patio window of a morning drinking coffee and watching the abundant birdlife in the reserve behind our home. We wanted the space to be open plan and easy living and it’s exactly that. A big thank you to Toscan Homes for building us such a special home.” Toscan Homes was also a finalist in the HIA Northern NSW Custom Built Home $800,000 to $1.5 million for the construction of an energy efficient home with a unique blend of English and Queensland style in Sawtell. PERRY HOMES
Building a new home is very exciting, but can also be a big undertaking. Whether it’s your first home, upgrading to a larger home or downsizing to a smaller one, the process can at times be equally overwhelming, but with Perry Homes, their dedicated team will guide you every step of the way – from initial design through to the moment you walk through your new front door and afterwards.

at Perry Homes, we appreciate that building a home is a deeply personal experience and we want our clients to love their home for many years to come.
E
stablished in 1993, Perry Homes was built on a foundation of trust and integrity. Ever since, Perry Homes has become synonymous in the industry for building high quality homes that provide exceptional value for money. So, what’s it like to build with Perry Homes? “Our flexibility is what makes us stand out,” says New Home Consultant Tracey Lavelle. “Even though we have a large range of plans in our portfolio, we also understand that ‘one size doesn’t necessarily suit all’ that’s why we are happy to modify our plans and even offer a free custom design service for jobs that go to site, ensuring that you get a home that is perfect for you.” There’s a real sense of partnership involved, with the Perry Homes team working closely with clients to deliver their ideal homes. If you don’t already have land, the team can help you find it; if you do have a block, they’ll help you design the best house to suit. Acreages, sloping blocks, knockdown-rebuilds, dual-key properties – you name it, Perry Homes can work with you to make it happen. Whether they’re starting with one of their existing home designs or even working from your own plans, it’s all about customisation. “We take more of a consultative approach,” Tracey says. “Once we’ve got an idea of what you’re after, we do our best to tailor the house to what you want.” The Perry Homes team also understands the
confusion that can come with building a new home. With that in mind, their aim is to remove the smoke-and-mirrors approach that comes with many home building packages, replacing it with honesty, transparency and choice. There are no nasty surprises or unexpected extra costs - you know what you’re getting, and you know it’s going to be high quality. Currently, when you build with Perry Homes, they will include all of their Inspired Inclusions for only $6,990. That’s over 38 luxury upgrades to your new home valued at $60,000! Some of the luxury inclusions include: • Ducted air conditioning • Smartstone benchtops and a choice of highend kitchen appliances • Mirrored robes to the bedrooms and feature panel internal doors throughout • Choice of high-end bathroom fixtures and fittings and semi frameless shower screens. Tracey added, “Our clients are often looking at ways to bring their personal flair to their home design without breaking the budget. Our Inspired Inclusions allow them the flexibility to explore different materials, fixtures and fittings for an affordable price.” If you are thinking of building, visit one of Perry Homes’ display homes located in Moonee Beach Estate or Sawtell Commons Estate or contact Tracey Lavelle on 0434 499 829 or tracey.lavelle@perryhomes.com.au or visit. perryhomes.com.au COFFS COAST focus 125
