Nick Johnstone, Principal of Bishop Drui College, is truly passionate about educational innovation, global experiences, and personal growth. We asked Nick about his recent experience walking the Camino de Santiago with his son Tom, his passion for teaching, and his exciting plans for the future at BDC.
Can you share with us a bit about your background and your journey as an educator and now Principal at Bishop Druitt College?
I was born and raised in Bundaberg, a coastal community not unlike Coffs Harbour. Growing up in regional Australia during the 1970s and 1980s, I spent most of my time playing sports, riding bikes, fishing, and camping. Despite being dyslexic - a fact I only discovered later in life, I excelled in maths and science, though English wasn't my strong suit.
I met my life partner, Nora, at 19, and we've been together since. She's also a teacher, having worked across Lutheran, Catholic and Anglican schools in early years education. We have two adult sons, William, an entertainment entrepreneur with credits in graphic design, music photography and music video production, and Thomas, a talented musician who releases music under the pseudonym Reverend Green. My path to teaching wasn't direct as initially, I planned to be a geneticist after completing
a Biomedical Science degree. However, after a guest appearance dressed as Julius Sumner Miller, of “Why Is It So?” fame, in my brother's Year 4 class, I fell in love with teaching. Six months later, I was back at Griffith University studying education.
My first teaching post was at a small P-10 public school in Central Queensland, where I was responsible for sport, maths and science across all age groups. This challenging start provided invaluable experience. I then moved to the Anglican system, helping establish St Luke's Anglican School in 1994. Over 21 years there, I wore many hats: teaching various subjects, leading departments, and establishing an international service and travel program.
My first teaching post was at a small P-10 public school in Central Queensland, where I was responsible for sport, maths and science across all age groups. is challenging start provided invaluable experience.
My first headship was at Geraldton Grammar School in Western Australia, a co-educational day and boarding school catering to students aged 3-18 from throughout WA and Asia. In 2018, I took on the role of Principal at
Bishop Druitt College, where I've been warmly welcomed into the Coffs Coast community. BDC has received recognition for innovation. What initiatives do you think make the school stand out in this area? Indeed, BDC has garnered national recognition, most recently being named one of Australia's most innovative schools by The Educator. As a K-12 co-educational school, we foster a positive growth and entrepreneurial mindset. We've established various academy and extension programs with nationally recognised practitioners and partners. Our microcredentialing program is well-regarded, and we're one of the first Teaching Hub schools in the state. We've also developed an innovative curriculum and co-curricular activities that many schools admire. These achievements are a team effort, made possible by our fantastic staff who turn vision into reality.

You recently walked the Camino trail with your youngest son, Tom. What motivated you to undertake this incredible journey?
I've wanted to walk the Camino de Santiago for over a decade. After hiking the Kokoda Trail in 2010 and completing a 9-day trek on the Bibbulmun Track with Tom in 2016, I knew I was physically capable. Inspired by Martin Sheen's film 'The Way' and
conversations with friends who had walked sections of the Camino, I was determined to complete the entire route in one go.
My goals were to deepen my understanding of Spanish history, geography and language, make new friends from around the world, and share a meaningful bonding experience with my youngest son. Tom had been unwell in recent years, so this presented an excellent opportunity for both of us to reset and refresh. We walked for over 40 days, covering just over 1,000 kilometres, including rest days and some intentional and unintentional detours.

What were some highlights of your
The experience was truly transformative. One memorable day involved walking from Villafranca de Bierzo to O Cebreiro mountain in driving rain, ending with a gruelling 2-hour ascent up a 30-40 degree slope. Exhausted and mudsplattered, we arrived at the tiny village of O Cebreiro. The next morning, we awoke to a winter wonderland (it was mid-Spring), with 70mm of snow blanketing the village. Walking through that snowy landscape, I felt a profound sense of nature's strength and beauty, and as a Christian, I sensed God's majesty around me.
Another highlight was the relationships formed along the way. I developed a stronger bond with my son and made close friends from Germany, Wales, Ireland, the Netherlands, the US and England - connections that have endured. Tom met a wonderful American girl, and their relationship continues to flourish.
What I've taken away from the Camino is a deep sense of gratitude and a feeling of belonging to a global community.
How have you applied lessons from the Camino in your everyday life in Coffs, including at school?
I've maintained the habit of walking 10km most days and am planning another Caminothe Portuguese route - with my wife next July. The key lessons revolve around taking time to appreciate the wonder in people, situations and nature. I find myself more present and focused, engaging more fully in experiences and multitasking less often.
What advice would you give to anyone considering the Camino or a similar adventure?
Simply put: do it! Invest in a guidebook, download the Buen Camino de Santiago app, buy some good walking shoes and walking poles and book your flights.
Can you share some of BDC's exciting plans for the future?
As the Coffs Coast grows, so too must our educational opportunities in this region. We're working with planners and developers to expand our Coffs Harbour campus. We've also developed a school farm at Glenreagh, producing high-quality beef and honey, which has enhanced our curriculum to include agricultural courses from Years 9 to 12. We aim to develop this site into an outdoor education centre for our community.

the upcoming school holidays, I'll attend an International Round Square Principals Conference in London, focusing on technological advancements that can enhance educational outcomes and global connectivity between students and teachers.
What are your aspirations for yourself, both at BDC and personally, over the next few years?
BDC is launching an online school in the next two years, with significant research and preparation already underway. In 2025, we'll expand our bus network, and in the future, we plan to establish satellite campuses to the north and south.
What motivates you to stay at the forefront of education and continually seek improved methods?
I feel a responsibility to prepare our students for an ever-changing world, and I relish the challenge of keeping abreast of international educational trends. For instance, during
I believe the next few years in education will be some of the most exciting and challenging in history, particularly with the impact of AI across all industries. Leading an independent school allows us to be agile and adapt quickly to these global changes, which genuinely excites me.
In the immediate future, I'm looking forward to joining BDC staff and students on a service learning tour to Cambodia and signing a new agreement with our sister school, Krou Yeung School, to continue to foster mutual growth and understanding. In the longer term, I'll continue seeking opportunities to learn, grow, and help create bright futures for our children.

Hi Kita. Can you share a bit about your early experiences with music and how you came to fall in love with singing?
I picked up a guitar at a really young age and have been singing ever since I can remember. I grew up on Fleetwood Mac, Joni Mitchell and Queen and still to this day I’m growing up on those three. There’s still so much to learn from them.
You’re about to embark on a regional tour following the success of your album tour earlier in the year. After growing up in Port Macquarie here on the Mid North Coast, how does it feel to bring your music to these regional areas and smaller towns?
I’m so excited because I haven’t toured regionally before. I love small towns and really want to grow my show to be able to travel to all the little places in Aus and not just the cities.
I love seeing fans react to the different songs from the album during a live show and it’s always a special moment for me to build connections with the audience during a performance.
I think my music is so heavily inspired by my regional coastal upbringing that sonically people in those regions can relate and feel the connection through my songs.
We are looking forward to seeing you in Coffs Harbour, what can fans expect from this show?
I’m really excited to play at the Hoey Moey. Anyone coming to the show can expect to hear a mix of new songs from my debut album, Young in Love, alongside a bunch of older songs that everyone has been requesting in the comments on my socials.
Your debut album, Young in Love has been a huge success. What has been your favourite part of performing these new tracks live, and are there any songs you’re particularly excited to play on this tour?
I love seeing fans react to the different songs from the album during a live show and It’s always a special moment for me to build
connections with the audience during a performance. I’m excited to play a couple of songs we didn’t do on the capital cities tour, including ‘Communicate’.
You’ve had a huge year with multiple collaborations. What do you enjoy most about collaborating with other artists, and how do these partnerships influence your sound?
I love how it pushes me into new creative space. Date Night was a fun challenge - I wrote it in under an hour, thinking I’d give it to a country star, but ended up keeping it for myself. I had Morgan Evans feature on the track, and getting to play it live together has been so special. With All Night, LAUREL and I had admired each other’s work for a while, and when she had a day off during her Aussie tour, we hit the studio. Our voices blend in a way that feels so natural, but you can still tell who’s who if you listen closely! I’ve also stepped into the dance space, featuring on FISHER’s track ‘Atmosphere’ and CYRIL’s interpolation of Spandau Ballet’s ‘True’. These collaborations have been amazing because they’ve let my
music reach new audiences who might not have heard of me before which is pretty cool. With so many career highlights this year, including selling out your album tour, what stands out as some of the most surreal or defining moments?
My sold-out album tour is definitely a freshly memorable moment. Getting to travel around the country to play songs off my debut album to so many fans is something I will remember for the rest of my life. Getting to continue the tour for this regional run is something I’m really excited about.
What can we expect next from you? Are there any upcoming projects or new music in the works that fans should look forward to?
I have been in the studio a bit the past month working on a couple of releases that will be coming out before the end of the year. I’ve also been writing a bunch of new music which will form my next project.
Finally, what do you hope fans take away from your performances, especially those coming to see you in Coffs Harbour?
Hopefully some merch!!

Hi Xavier. You’re known for playing many different instruments, can you share a bit about your introduction to music and how you came to play so many different instruments?
I just taught myself over time really. As a kid, I was always interested in playing things my own way. So if I came across instruments, I'd just pick it up and kind of fiddle. I was always keen to try different things, maybe I was a bit ADD or something..I just kind of didn't focus on one thing, I always liked to try different things. Maybe that is what led me to be the kind of musician I am today.
I’m just like anyone else, you know, I’M JUST HAVING A CRACK AT LIFE. I HAVE MY OWN BATTLES LIKE EVERYONE ELSE. Life’s not easy.
Your connection to nature is obviously a big part of who you are, what do you like to do when you’re touring to relax and stay grounded?
you can find some kind of stillness, or something that makes you feel whole in your mind and use that too. Looking back on your career, what have been some of the most rewarding or defining moments for you as an artist?
really lucky artist, there’s a lot of great musicians in the world that don’t have the opportunities that I’ve had. For whatever reason, certain musicians have better opportunities.
This year we actually played a lot of outdoor venues in Europe and the States, which was really nice. There’s always something beautiful to see in every city. When I’m touring I like to stay focused, I pretty much spend all my time on my own. I don’t really talk much before the show to preserve my voice. I work out or stretch during the day; get ready for the show and I like to do that outside wherever I am. I really focus and make sure my lungs are open and my heart is open and I’m ready for the show. I guess you just learn how to prepare yourself, I’ve got pretty good at that these days. I’ve done a lot of gigs, and I’m able to sing for a long time, because I know how to prepare. I think it can go two ways; you can either burn out, or you can really look after your health and have a long career. So I keep myself in good shape, and part of that for me is breathing some fresh air and being out in nature.. but that can also sometimes happen in your mind,
I feel really proud of things like that BECAUSE AUSTRALIAN PEOPLE HAVE TAKEN A LOT FROM BALI OVER THE YEARS, SO AS AN AUSTRALIAN, to be able to give back in that kind of way is really cool.
There’s been so many highlights. It’s an absolute spin out for me the amount of things I’ve been able to achieve, the amount of places I’ve played, every day is a highlight. When I’m playing in another country, and three thousand people are singing the words to my songs and English is not even their language.. It’s just a trip! I feel really really lucky.
So sometimes, if I’m feeling a bit self indulgent, a bit tired, or over it or whatever, I remind myself to be thankful, I’m so thankful for this life and the opportunities I have had.
What’s next for you after this tour? Do you have any new music or projects in the works that we can look forward to?
For me it’s more about having proud moments, I’m proud of things like what we just did in Bali. We raised $50,000 for Sungai Watch; an organisation cleaning up rubbish in Bali. I feel really proud of things like that because Australian people have taken a lot from Bali over the years, so as an Australian, to be able to give back in that kind of way is really cool. Getting involved with organisations like Sea Shepherd, being able to help promote those kinds of things over the years and being aligned with that organisation for over 20 years, that’s the stuff that I’m proud of. I’m just a
I’m going to record some more music next year. This show that I’ve put together is a one piece show where I’m looping stuff and I’m creating a lot of sounds on my own, so I’m going to put together a two piece show with a drummer who’s from the Central Coast, called Lisa Purmodh. She played drums with me in my last band and is an incredible musician and is also really good with other instruments. I’m going to bring her in to kind of expand on what I’m doing now, like a two piece show. I’ve got a couple of ideas like that, but I’m also just keen to take a breath and spend some time with my family. I’ve got two little fellas under three, and I’ve been away a lot overseas, it’s just finding that balance. Making sure I can spend time playing music; because I feel like music is medicine, and people really need it in the world.. I noticed that this year, especially in America.. but at the same time, my favourite thing in the world is spending time with my family, and out of that comes a lot of my music too.

How has Therapy Collective come about?
The two of us met in 2021 while working at Clarence Correctional Centre. We both enjoyed the work and were inspired by a great supervisor who saw us through our internships and introduced us to compassion-focused therapies, which quickly became a shared passion. While we

valued our roles, we began to feel constrained by the system’s limitations and wanted to offer more personalised care. This led to discussions about creating our own therapeutic space, one that aligned with our values and allowed us to focus on the kind of compassionate, tailored interventions we believed were most effective.
Who is part of your business and what strengths do they bring to your business?
We both founded the business, fuelled by our dedication to working with trauma survivors — a skillset developed during our time working in corrections. We are both deeply committed to providing trauma-informed care for adults and children, and helping clients navigate complex emotional challenges. In addition to trauma work, we have a strong focus on child-centred interventions, supporting families with behavioural concerns, learning difficulties, and emotional regulation issues.
We asked Molly, our Practice Manager about our individual strengths. She described “Kate as empathetic, compassionate, and gentle in her approach, while Courtney is known for being understanding, trustworthy, and naturally warm. Together, they create a supportive and nurturing environment for all their clients.”
Molly, our Practice Manager and Learning Intervention specialist, plays an essential role in running the clinic and leading our children’s educational programs. She manages intervention groups focused on special education and IEP support, ensuring
children with learning difficulties receive the tailored help they need. Together, we offer a comprehensive range of therapeutic and educational services, combining our expertise to meet the diverse needs of our community. Who can access your services and what services do you offer??
We are dedicated to supporting individuals across the lifespan who are facing a range of challenges, including mental illness, life stress, learning difficulties, adjustment issues, relationship problems, grief, and managing children with behavioural concerns or disabilities.
We also offer children’s emotional regulation and social skills programs, and Molly leads educational programs, private tutoring and school readiness programs. These services support students with an IEP (Individualised Education Program) in mainstream environments and offer tailored support to a child with a range of abilities.
We are also passionate about supporting key local organisations like Uniting and Galambila, ensuring that essential services reach those who need them most.
Therapy (DBT) for emotional regulation and distress tolerance. These therapies ensure our interventions are both compassionate and yet backed by scientific research.
What assessment services do you offer and for who?
Alongside our own work, we’ve welcomed a range of other professionals who rent rooms within our space, like counsellors and speech therapists, and we’re excited to bring an occupational therapist on board soon. Having different specialists under one roof means we can offer more well-rounded support, so our clients can easily find the care that best fits their needs. It’s all about creating a space where people can access the right help, whatever they’re going through.
What are evidence-based therapies?
Evidence-based therapies are approaches proven through research to effectively treat mental health issues. In our practice, we use several of these, including, Schema Therapy for deep-rooted patterns of coping mechanisms, and Dialectical Behaviour
We offer a range of cognitive, learning, functional and behavioural assessments for both children and adults. These assessments inform our diagnosis of things like Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), Intellectual Disability and Learning Difficulties. As part of our daily practice, we offer more informal assessments focused on trauma and emotional regulation difficulties which help inform our treatment plans. Finally, we have a waitlist for ASD (Autism Spectrum Disorder) assessments which we will begin completing in early 2025.
Why do you think this service is important here on the Coffs Coast.
This service is crucial on the Coffs Coast due to the significant shortage of mental health and assessment services, particularly for children. Many families in the community
have faced long waiting times, sometimes up to 10 months, just to access therapy and assessments for their children. This delay can greatly impact a child's development, safety and well-being. We are both committed to addressing this gap by providing accessible care to meet the needs of the community. We are also passionate about supporting key local organisations like Uniting and Galambila, ensuring that essential services reach those who need them most. Our goal is to improve access and reduce waiting times, providing the community with the support they deserve.
How can people access your services or make a referral?
Most people access a Mental Health Care Plan through their GP and the referral is sent on to us. We also receive referrals via service providers, for example people with an NDIS plan. People are also more than welcome to contact our clinic directly (admin@ therapycollective.au or 0432 021 507) and Molly our Practice Manager will discuss with them their needs and get them booked in.

Badke is a young local equestrian who is excelling in her sport, recently being selected to compete in Mexico in the CSI 2* Puebla International 2025 Show Jumping World Cup!
Hhow you first got started in equestrian sports and what drew you to showjumping in particular?
I got started in equestrian sports at a very young age, thanks to my Mum. She grew up riding horses and competing in show jumping and eventing, so it was only natural for me to be introduced to horses early on. In fact, I sat on a horse for the first time when I was just four weeks old, with my Mum holding me! Growing up in that environment instilled a deep love for riding in me, and it’s been a significant part of my life ever since.
I’ve been riding horses since before I could walk, driven by my passion for these incredible animals and the sport itself. I started competing at age 5 in pony club and local agricultural shows, and by the time I was nine, I discovered my true passion for show jumping and eventing. That’s when I really began to focus on developing my skills and pursuing my goals as a serious equestrian.
What drew me to show jumping was the amazing blend of challenge and skill that it requires. It's a sport which tests talent, precision, and training in a unique way. Building a connection with a horse requires a unique level
of skill - the trust and communication between horse and rider is unlike any other sport. Show jumping is full of action, excitement, determination, and a hint of glamour. I enjoy that it is a sport in which men and women participate equally, and champions may emerge at any age, demonstrating how determination knows no limits.
What has your equestrian journey been like leading up to this point?
My equestrian journey has been incredibly rewarding, and I feel extremely lucky to have such supportive parents. They’ve travelled all over New South Wales, Queensland, and even down to Melbourne last year for me to compete at Nationals. Those experiences have given me invaluable opportunities to gain experience and achieve my goals, both competitively and personally.
The horses I've had the privilege to ride have also played a significant role in my development. From my cheeky first pony to the talented horses I ride today, each one has contributed to my growth as a rider. Throughout this journey, I've reached many personal milestones, but I've also faced heartbreak and setbacks. These challenges have helped me build strength and resilience, bringing me closer to my ultimate dream of
competing at the Brisbane 2032 Olympics. I’ve also experienced some incredible accolades along the way, such as winning the Pony Club Australia National Award for highest achievement rider under 13 years in 2021, as well as numerous state championships and eventing wins. Competing in show jumping at 1.25m and eventing up to 1-star has been thrilling, and I’m excited to see where this journey takes me next.
Who has been your biggest influence or support throughout your equestrian career? How have they helped you reach this level of competition?
Definitely my Mum, she has been my biggest influence and support throughout my equestrian career. Not only has she taught me to love and respect horses, but she’s also been my most important coach, sharing her knowledge and experience with me. She’s brutally honest and keeps my feet firmly on the ground, which I really appreciate.
The most important thing is that she has always believed in me and given me the confidence to pursue my goals. She consistently reminds me that with hard work and determination, I can achieve anything. Her encouragement helps me shake off any nerves or fears, allowing me to
focus on being the best I can be.
I’m also lucky to have a very supportive Dad and little brother Kye, who spend endless weekends travelling to watch me ride.
I’m incredibly proud to have this opportunity to compete internationally in show jumping, and I hope to one day represent my country at the Olympics and the World Equestrian Games.
I also want to acknowledge a more famous influence in my life: Australian three-time Olympic gold medallist Matt Ryan. My Mum introduced me to him when I was about ten, and I’ve been fortunate to receive some great coaching from him over the years. I truly credit him for helping me develop my lower leg position, which I like to call my "seatbelt." It’s come in handy more times than I can count, and I’m grateful for his guidance!
Congratulations on being selected to compete in Mexico next year! Can you tell us a bit about this competition and what it means to you to be selected, both personally and as an athlete?
Thank you! I’m incredibly excited about being selected to compete in Mexico next year. This prestigious event will give me the opportunity to train and compete on world-class show jumping horses. Once I arrive in Mexico, I’ll spend four days getting familiar with the horses before
competing over three days in the CSI 2* Puebla International 2025 Show Jumping World Cup. The competition features rounds starting at 1.10m and 1.20m, progressing to 1.25m and 1.35m, which is both challenging and exhilarating.
Being selected for this competition is a significant step towards my long-term goal of representing Australia at the Brisbane 2032 Olympics and beyond. Competing at this level is a dream come true.
Competing internationally is a huge step. How are you preparing, both physically and mentally, for the Global Amateur Tour in Mexico?
I currently have 2 horses in full competition training and 3 client horses in training, so my schedule is pretty hectic and naturally preparing me physically for Mexico.
How do you feel about representing your country on an international stage?
Extremely excited and nervous all at the same time. As a young equestrian, representing Australia has been my aspiration for as long as I can remember. I’m incredibly proud to have this opportunity to compete internationally in
my country at the Olympics and the World
Equestrian Games. This experience will be invaluable in helping me grow as an athlete and achieve my goals.
What are you most looking forward to about competing in Puebla? Have you ever competed internationally before, or will this be your first time?
This will be my first time competing outside of Australia. I actually have never left Australia before, so it is also my first time travelling internationally which is double exciting.
I’m so excited to experience the atmosphere of a prestigious international event, the opportunity to watch some of the world's best showjumpers live and experience everything firsthand.
I’d have to say I’m looking forward mostly to the horses. The high calibre and quality of the horses in Mexico will be so exciting to witness, but I also get to ride them!
I’m also looking forward to experiencing the culture and local people of Mexico, and the new friendships and contacts I will make.

Can you share the story behind the creation of Aanuka Beach Resort?
Tilley and Wills Hotels (the group behind Aanuka Beach House) is always rapidly growing and looking for the next big thing to master. With a reputation for delivering vibrant bar and dining experiences at our popular Sydney and Brisbane venues
including Cabana Bar, The Greenwood Hotel, The Prince Consort and Verandah Bar, we wanted to ensure our first beachfront resort venue was somewhere we could build a relationship with the locals.
Coffs Harbour, with its population of more than 78,000 and over 900,000 visitors flocking to the regional annually was a natural choice for us!
The question they raised and focused on was, how do we make the most of the existing building and footprint and take advantage of the breathtaking views.
The visualisation and creation of Aanuka Beach House stemmed from our design
team’s very first site visit back in March 2024. The overwhelmingly beautiful visual asset of the existing venue was the view of Little Diggers Beach and the abundant lush grassland surrounding the venue. It was just a matter of how do we make the most of the existing building and footprint and take advantage of the breathtaking views.
What inspired the concept for your establishment, and what is the vision you have for it?
The concept and vision were inspired by visiting other similar beachfront venues in the Greek Islands. It was somewhat fortuitous that Sandy Grice, the head Interior Designer on the project had a trip booked to the Greek islands before she was engaged on the Aanuka project. Timing as they say - is everything.

brought Aanuka to life was our Tilley and Wills staff from our Brisbane and Sydney venues. Many of them were very excited to be a part of the project and lend a hand both during the building phase and opening night.
After visiting some of the most beautiful locations in the world, Sandy was able to take the very best casual and relaxed architectural applications of some of the most successful beach clubs in the world and apply them to Aanuka Beach House. When you have a dream location, the pieces of the puzzle come together very quickly.
How did your team come together to launch this venture?
The extensive build and fit-out, completed in just 3.5 months, was a collaborative effort largely involving the local community. We’re proud to say that 90% of the tradesmen hired during the renovation were from the local area and we wouldn’t have been able to do it without them.

Heading up the culinary team is our Group Executive Chef Brad Sloane (AHA Chef Of The Year and trained under Chef Marco Pierre White), and Head Chef Richmond Rodrigues. These two experienced kitchen leaders are offering a diverse menu inspired by the stunning beachfront location and fresh local ingredients - available breakfast, lunch and dinner daily.

How do you source your ingredients, and do you focus on any local or seasonal specialties?
Our goal with the menu was to capture the amazing legacy of Aanuka while celebrating the incredible local produce this region has to offer. We’ve worked closely with farmers, seafood suppliers and growers from Coffs Harbour and beyond and showcase those ingredients in every dish we serve.

The idea is to have people coming back to explore different seasonal options and always find something new to love. With the stunning coastal location, we knew seafood was going to be one of the heroes of the menu. Our fresh seafood platter is a standout - featuring all local produce from the best catches of the day!
How would you describe the ambience and decor of your bar and restaurant?
The ambience and décor were built on a beachcomber type of existence. Whether you’re strolling off the beach or dressing up for a night out, we wanted to create
a relaxed environment where everyone feels welcome. Natural materials and finishes played a big part in this design process. How do you plan to connect with the local community and create a loyal customer base?
A huge part of launching Aanuka Beach House was creating a relationship with the local community. We want to make sure locals are at the centre of everything we do! As a part of the Aanuka opening, we held a “locals’ open day” in partnership with the local radio, HITFM. Locals had the opportunity to come down and sign up for their locals’ card redeeming them 10% off all food and beverage all year round. As a driver for the day, Aanuka Beach House provided free bacon and egg rolls, free ice cream, $5 beers and mimosas, live music, yard games and the chance to win up to $8k in prizes – and the card is free to join!
e building has a beautiful high timber truss system throughout the venue that was not being used to its best potential.
and how did you overcome them?
There will always be challenges when renovating a 30-yearold building, most of which our builder Dan Smith was faced with. Relocating plumbing and services to create our beautiful main bar, replacing all the existing flooring and laying our stunning new European Oak hardwood flooring and craning in an enormous pizza oven to the 2nd floor kitchen were some large challenges. Our team’s patience and problem-solving skills supported the ongoing trials to bring the building works to completion.
Can you share a memorable moment or experience during the opening process that stands out to you?
This was a huge driver in creating a loyal customer base where we can now share upcoming events, activations and what’s on schedules.
What challenges did you face while setting up the bar and restaurant,
The day after our launch party, our first day open to the public, we had a bunch of locals roll in just as the sun was setting. It felt like a very supportive and relaxed environment, everything we had dreamed it to be. It was a great night and one we hope
to experience every night!
Are there any sustainability practices you’ve incorporated into your operations?
During the build we installed solar panels throughout Aanuka Beach House to offset carbon emissions. We are also working with local scout groups collecting bottles for local recycling and minimising buffet breakfast wastage with staff breakfasts.

When did you first become interested in cookery as a career?
I was fortunate to discover my passion for cooking at a young age. During a term of cooking classes in Year 9, I immediately knew this was what I wanted to pursue. I found the process of mixing ingredients and developing new ideas fascinating. I was also lucky enough to do work experience with a passionate chef who guided me towards success. What I love most about being a chef is that the learning never stops. It’s an honour to feed people, not only daily but also during some of the biggest moments of their lives, like weddings.
When it comes to creating a seasonal menu, what do you take into consideration?
Incorporating ingredients at their seasonal peak is key, as they’re at their best in terms of flavour. I like to take a logical approach, balancing new ideas with flavour combinations
while ensuring that the key ingredient shines. Supporting local growers and businesses is always a priority, but we’re fortunate in this global age to access unique seasonal ingredients from around the world. This allows chefs to keep pushing the boundaries of creativity.
How would you describe your style of cooking?
I consider myself a versatile chef with a passion for crafting dishes that cater to a wide range of tastes, from comforting family favourites to refined fine dining. I’ve worked across various environments, from cafes to fine dining restaurants, and have thrived in each. My career has taken me across Australia and overseas, where I’ve continued to learn and refine my skills. My travels, particularly through Southeast Asia, have been a major influence. I’ve attended many culinary schools and learned from chefs, cooks, and home cooks, all of which have inspired my cooking style. What do you like to cook at home?
Family is everything to me, so with my kids
getting older, spending as much time as possible with them is paramount to me. I have been trying to teach them the basics of cooking and it is a great way to spend quality time together. We like to cook “shared plates” or grazing platters. It makes it easy and convenient for us to have a chat, play games and just bond whilst nibbling on the food.

Ebony Shalders has used her knowledge and experience from years working in both the hospitality industry and nursing, and combined them to create Lot 40 Kitchen, a readymade meal service providing nutritious, nurturing and delicious meals for those who are struggling to cook for themselves.
Hi Ebony, have you always been passionate about cooking? Can you share a bit about your background in food and hospitality?
I've often wondered where my love of cooking came from. With both of my parents being nurses and working shifts, cooking was never a priority in our house! I think it must have come from my Grandma, who brought her Lebanese heritage into the kitchen. As for my career, I've spent most of my adult life in hospitality, managing cafés and venues both locally and in Melbourne.
You studied nursing while raising your children and have been working as a nurse now for many years. What do you
enjoy about your nursing role?
I've worked in both private and public nursing, and I especially enjoyed engaging with the elderly. There's something incredibly rewarding about connecting with them and being part of their care.
How did the idea for Lot 40 Kitchen come about?
I heard of a man who lived alone who was unable to cook for himself. I made him a soupthis is where “old man soup” began. ings just snowballed from there!
Working in primary health, I had the privilege of meeting and building relationships with many elderly individuals. It was during this time that I
noticed the significant lack of good food available to them.. Many lived alone, and I realised how challenging it can be to cook for just one person. I heard of a man who lived alone who was unable to cook for himself. I made him a soup, and this is where “old man soup” began. Things just snowballed from there!
What is your main goal in providing these meals for the community?
Food is my love language. My main goal in providing meals is to ensure that the elderly
and those in need have access to nutritious, home-cooked food, especially those who struggle to cook for themselves. It’s about nourishment, but also about offering care and connection. No one should have to feel forgotten or isolated when it comes to something as basic and essential as a good meal.
How has your meal business evolved over the years?

I absolutely love slow-cooked meats and anything with an Asian twist, but surprisingly, my most popular dish is my quiche, served with a side salad and homemade dressing! A delicious simple meal that has become a favourite among my customers.
What are your plans or aspirations for Lot 40 Kitchen moving forward?
Cookabourgh to facilitate my business. It is very easy to navigate and even sends reminders to my customers. I change my menu weekly, with orders opening on Thursdays and closing Sunday night. The meals are ready for pick-up or delivery the following Thursday. Anyone can order meals, and there’s a subsidy available for people on a Home Care Package (HCP) or the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS).
I would love to have a bigger kitchen! Right now, I’m cooking out of a food trailer. But in a way starting out in a small space has been a blessing - it’s forced me to be super organised and efficient. But having more room would definitely make things easier as the business grows!
I would also love to see more people help their elderly parents set up Home Care Packages through me. Other ready-made meal suppliers offer convenience, but their meals are often mass-produced and full of preservatives. I focus on providing nutritious, homemade meals that cater to people’s needs and make a significant difference in their well-being.

Lowanna and Kevin Doye opened Kombu Wholefoods, Bellingen, in September 2004 with a goal of providing their customers with wholesome, sustainable, and ethically sourced products.
They run Kombu as a social enterprise that values its environmental and social impacts as highly as the usual financial considerations, and fosters a vibrant, connected, and eco-conscious community. Hi guys, Kombu is celebrating 20 years in business this year, can you share a bit about its beginnings?
Kombu Wholefoods in Bellingen began as a passion project. We wanted to create a space where customers could easily access fresh, organic, affordable and locally sourced products. With strong community support, Kombu has since expanded, becoming a hub for affordable, wholesome food, eco-friendly products, and a place where people can connect over shared values of sustainability
and wellness. As Kombu celebrates its 20th birthday we give a massive shout out to the few hundred staff who’ve helped us along the way, we couldn’t have done it alone.
What were your main goals in starting Kombu Wholefoods back in 2004?
The store is all about supporting healthy living, sustainability, and community. Our main goal is to provide our regional community with fresh, organic, and ethically sourced products, helping the community make conscious choices for themselves and the planet. We focus on offering eco-friendly and plastic-free alternatives, ensuring minimal environmental impact.
Kombu is also dedicated to supporting local farmers and producers - and beyond just being a shop, we aim to create a welcoming space where people can learn, connect, and feel empowered to live a more sustainable lifestyle.
What are your main criteria when sourcing new products and suppliers for the shop?
Kombu Wholefoods has a thoughtful approach when it comes to sourcing new products for our store, ensuring they align with our core values of sustainability, ethics, and community support. Our key criteria include:
Well priced. We believe healthy food needs to be available to as many as possible - not only socially and environmentally sustainable but financially sustainable for our customers. Organic and chemical-free. Preference is given to products that are organic, free from harmful chemicals, and promote natural health.

We aim to lead by example in promoting zero-waste and plastic-free living, encouraging people to make small changes that collectively have a big impact on the environment.
Environmental conservation. We have supported local environmental groups and campaigns focused on preserving the natural beauty of the Coffs Coast region.

The Kombu Floodcam has become an important and much used tool for the people of Bellingen, who is involved with keeping it running?
The famous Kombu Floodcam was set up and is run by Kombu co-owner and weather nerd Kev Doye (who also runs a weather website and blog at bellingenweather.org). The
floodcam is set up to monitor water levels at key points in Bellingen, providing real-time footage during heavy rain or flood events. Since the Bellinger River area is prone to flooding, the camera helps residents stay informed about rising waters, road closures, and potential risks. The live footage from the floodcam can be accessed through Kombu’s website, allowing locals and visitors to check conditions remotely and make safe travel decisions - it’s part of our store’s commitment to community support and safety, especially during extreme weather events.
Do you have any other projects planned that you can share with us? What hopes do you have for Kombu moving forward?

e Barn at Raleigh has been a family run business for many years, owned by Michael and Wendy Harfield and now run by their children. We had a chat with their daughter Scarlet Capper about her fond memories of the barn, the family’s commitment to sustainability in the form of reusing, recycling, and repurposing and what’s next for e Barn.
Can you share a bit about The Barn’s history and your long-standing connection to this place?
The shop has been a staple in the secondhand market since 1986. As a child, I fondly remember exploring its maze-like paths with my younger sister while Dad scouted for materials to restore our 100-year-old farmhouse.
In 2005, my parents, Michael and Wendy Harfield, took ownership and transformed the shop into a cherished family business. It was a perfect fit - Dad loved restoring furniture and connecting with customers, while Mum had a passion for sourcing vintage treasures and unique collectibles.
Our shop is dedicated to supporting the community and the environment, making us a vital part of what makes Bellingen so special.
After Dad passed away from cancer in 2015, my brother took over, with help from our cousin. Today, the shop is still very much a family affair, run by myself, my brother, Mum, and our close friend Sophia.
What have been some of your favourite memories of The Barn over the years your
family has owned it?
Some of my favourite memories are from when my five siblings and I all lived in Sydney. Whenever Mum called to say Dad was coming down to salvage materials from a house, we’d drop everything. We’d take time off work to help pull down doors, windows, furnitureanything we could fit into the truck.
The Barn became more than just a shop; it turned into a family hub, drawing each of us into its orbit. Dad’s (Michael) cheeky charm made him a customer favourite, and though he’d often joke to Wendy, "I achieved nothing today," those conversations were where he built invaluable connections to our community.
The Barn stocks a huge range of interesting old things, how do you source it all?
Most of our stock comes directly from the local community, with many residents contacting us to help remove or sell furniture as they downsize, relocate, or manage estate cleanouts. This process allows people to part with unwanted items in a sustainable way, knowing that these pieces will be resold and remain within the local community. We also take on small demolition jobs and
shed cleanouts, salvaging quality materials that might otherwise end up as waste. Our commitment to salvaging reflects the urgency of the climate crisis and economic challenges, driving us to provide affordable, high-quality furniture and building supplies. By partnering with local builders and tradespeople, we repurpose excess materials, while Wendy’s passion for vintage fashion has inspired a preloved clothing section to tackle textile waste. This approach champions the circular economy, ensuring that valuable items stay out of landfills and find new life in our community What have been some of the more obscure or interesting items you’ve come across over the years?
Our shop has seen all kinds of weird and wonderful items pass through its doors. Some of the most unique finds include a hang glider, an antique peg leg, and even a possible 16th-century pirate chest. We have had eight massive leadlight window panels from Melbourne's Flinders Street Station, fossilized dinosaur poop, and a taxidermy Himalayan Tahr head (a type of goat), which still resides in the shop. Other treasures have included a 16th-17th century Japanese firefighting axe
and, surprisingly, a second hand tombstone. The variety never fails to surprise!
When these unique items cross your path, do you ever need advice on what they are or where they’ve come from?
That’s another exciting aspect of our shop, the connections we are forging with collectors and experts in various fields. We are building a network of specialists, including local coin, military collectibles, and antique bottle experts, along with a retired antique furniture restorer. These relationships enhance our understanding of unique pieces and enrich our customers' experiences.
What sort of feedback do you get from customers when they come into the shop?
Many customers express their joy in exploring the unique old wares and vintage treasures in our shop. Families on school holidays bring their children to share a bit of history, while adults enjoy a nostalgic trip down memory lane. This experience highlights how the Bellingen Shire community actively contributes to environmental sustainability by recycling old building materials and furniture. Our motto, "Keep it out of landfill, buy second hand," reflects this commitment.
We take pride in providing excellent customer service and love helping people find the perfect piece. We also enjoy offering creative ideas for repurposing items, such as transforming an old Singer sewing machine into a stylish vanity base or using an antique drawer as a shadow box for display.
You have a big focus on reusing, recycling and repurposing things. Why do you feel this is so important in this day and age?
Reusing, recycling, and repurposing are more important than ever in today's world because of the growing urgency to reduce waste and protect the environment. We're facing a climate crisis, and the amount of waste created by mass consumerism is overwhelming. Every time we repurpose or recycle an item, whether it’s furniture, building materials, or clothing, we prevent it from ending up in a landfill and reduce the demand for new, resource-intensive products.

Start small! Look for items that are solidly built, even if they need some love. Furniture made from real wood for example, is often easy to refresh with a bit of sanding and paint. Don’t be afraid to experiment with colour or materials, and always check local second hand stores like ours before buying something new. What plans do you have for the future at The Barn?
By giving new life to these items, we’re not only reducing environmental impact but also supporting the circular economy, where products are kept in use for as long as possible. It's a more sustainable way to live and shop, and it allows us to offer quality, affordable items that don’t come at the planet's expense. This approach is a small but impactful way to contribute to a healthier future for the environment and our community.
Do you have any tips for anyone wanting to start buying second hand more and/or working on upcycling projects?
We’re always looking for ways to expand our range and reach more people. We hope to introduce workshops on upcycling and creative reuse soon, to help others learn the skills needed to transform their finds. Christine Hamilton is part of the Nambucca Valley Arts Council as an artist and gallery volunteer, as well as writing their newsle er. NVAC holds regular art exhibitions at the Stringer Gallery (located within the Nambucca Community and Arts Centre), promotes local concerts and performing artists, and supports a vast array of workshops and art fairs.
Coverview of NVAC and what its core mission is?
The aim and objectives are to contribute to the cultural life of the Nambucca Valley, to promote music concerts, choirs, drama groups, artist painters, architects, poets, writers and other performing arts.
To organise locally significant exhibitions, concerts, performances, lectures, seminars, conferences and festivals.
To undertake evidence-based research and arrange for the publication of newsletters and pamphlets.
How did you come to be involved and what is your current role with NVAC?
I first became involved with the NVAC as a gallery volunteer and artist. Then I was asked last year to help raise funds for the biennial show with a friend of mine, and we raised a lot of money and had 73 local businesses participating. I then decided that the group needed a newsletter so I took that over. It is now a monthly publication and well distributed within the Bellingen Shire and
Coffs Harbour area. I saw the newsletter as the ideal means to inform, to stimulate ideas and creativity and to inspire members. It’s a way of rattling the arts cage to keep us looking at the donut and not just the hole. I also organise the roster of volunteers for the gallery.
The Arts Council supports various community groups involved in artistic pursuits. Can you tell us more about the kinds of workshops, fairs, or other activities that NVAC helps to organise?
organised throughout the year, we just had 2 workshops on mosaics and frescos. Most of the material is supplied by the NVAC. We also have had a “Demo Day” where artists set up in the courtyard of the library and paint for people and children to come and have a look.

The NVAC is affiliated with the local drama group and organises concerts. Many members join the NVAC for the concerts for which they pay a discounted price. It recently acquired a new “Concert Organiser” and is looking for musicians performing at the Stringer Gallery, to use the stage and the grand piano in the main hall of the Community Art Centre. The Stringer Gallery, run by NVAC, showcases local talents year-round. How important is the gallery in fostering and promoting the creative work of Nambucca Valley artists?
Artists can have up to 3 paintings in the gallery including large ones. There is a $20.00 annual fee and a $15.00 annual hanging fee. Every two months there is a “Themed Exhibition” where artists are given a title to paint. Those artists can enter an extra 3 paintings (more if room permits) at no cost. At the same time there is a “Feature Artist” exhibition, also running for 2 months. An artist has a wall to
themelves and can hang as many paintings as they want, and again, at no cost. The gallery manager is there to help.
What upcoming events or exhibitions are you particularly excited about and how can people get involved?
The next large show “The Biennial” will be on next September where over 400 entries from the area and beyond will be displayed and worthwhile prizes can be won. Last biennial involved 73 businesses and we are hoping to do that again. Another, smaller event takes place twice a year “Special Sale” where paintings can be purchased for up to $100.00. This has been quite popular with our artists and we still maintain a good standard. What role do the arts play in bringing the community together, and how does NVAC continue to foster this connection?
We share a courtyard with the library and it would be wonderful to invite duos, trios etc.. to play in that courtyard whilst people are looking through the exhibition.
The fact that 73 businesses are happy to participate in our main activity (The Biennial) shows an amazing support for what we do, and I produce a newsletter that combines Arts news and cultural advancement via articles on matters crucial to the role of art as a civilising force in public affairs.
What are NVAC’s goals for the future? Are there any new projects or initiatives you are looking forward to?
Oh yes. During the biennial show I would like to introduce music every day (it runs for 1 week). We share a courtyard with the library and it would be wonderful to invite duos, trios etc. to play in that courtyard whilst people are looking through the exhibition. Buskers would be most welcome too, we would just have
to get council’s approval. Our new concert organiser is very excited about that. We just need a donation or grant to pay for the musicians.
Goals for the future:
1) Broadening the scope of the arts covered by NVAC.
2) Bringing music into the biennial show.
3) Increased media exposure (2NVR, Channel 7 in Coffs, Kempsey Radio Arts Programs).
4) Invite and welcome young artists to the gallery.
How can local artists, performers, or residents get involved with NVAC and contribute to the artistic community in the Nambucca Valley?
Local artists, performers or residents only have to go to the Stringer Gallery or the website to pick up a brochure, a membership form and join. The fees are quite low ($20.00) and you do not have to be an artist to join. Our indefatigable gallery volunteers are there to answer any questions.

Skotty Fairclough
Hi Skotty. Can you share a bit about your background and introduction to the art world?
I am a multi-faceted artist who has been fortunate enough to hold a career in both music and visual arts for over 2 decades. Musically I have written, toured and managed in a variety of music genres from kids music to metal and nearly everything between to varying degrees of success. Artistically I have similarly worked across a wide span of mediums, starting out as a graphic artist specialising in poster art before progressing into exhibitions, commissions, film-clips, branding and animation. Beyond the creative components of my career I have been an ambassador for an international surf/ skate company, held department manager
positions at 3 major music festivals, worked across the education sector and built a popular music school from the ground up.
Sko y Fairclough is as vibrant in life as his incredible paintings, and we loved hearing about his life and art from his unique and enthusiastic viewpoint. Sko y will be holding an exhibition of his newest works on Saturday November 16th at Ground Earth café in Woolgoolga.
I really fell into the art world as a kid growing up in Co s. I wasn’t made for si ing still in school, but I could draw well enough, tell stories and entertain to get through it.
I really fell into the art world as a kid growing up in Coffs. I wasn’t made for sitting still in school, but I could draw well enough, tell stories and entertain to get through it. When a friend and I floated the idea of a ‘mock’ band, it gave me an outlet to really explore my creative side; concept names, draw logos, posters, merch ideas, write songs and come up with lyrics etc. We were just having fun when eventually someone asked us to play a rather large underage party. When I stepped on stage and spoke into the microphone my place in the world made total sense. My life from that moment just became one
big adrenaline rush. School took a back seat to surfing, skating, music and art. Looking back, that time was my own unorthodox apprenticeship of sorts that would serve as the roots to what’s since been an almost 30 year journey.
How would you describe your art style and what are your preferred mediums?
Well, hyper-kolour native is a 3 word slogan I use to simply explain my own take on native bird portraits painted in a stylistic fusion of pop, comic, surrealistic, and skate-deck art styles. I like to paint in acrylics on recycled plywood with permaplastik (neon) highlights. The wood is often as unique as the pictures I paint on them, and just as each subject presents its own challenges, so does the ‘canvas’ filled with cracks, grains, and odd surface textures.

ARTIST of the MONTH
Can you walk us through your creative process—from concept to completion?
It begins with the bird, be that my choice or what I’ve been commissioned to paint. I have a general idea in mind of what will work as a portrait, but finding the right reference is important. It's then about matching the right piece of ply to the bird. The ‘ply’ needs sanding, the cracks filled and lacquering. I then digitally illustrate the outline of the portrait and project it onto the wood. From there, I add a base coat of white and some basic section colours to see what is what and where. Then begins the a pain-staking process of cutting all the detail in with fine brushwork and countless hours of layering trying to figure out how to convey my own vision of the subject. It’s not a planned thing, the bird sort of takes me where it wants to go and all the mistakes along the way guide me. It’s a process of trial and error that never ends up looking the way it starts in my minds-eye so in this way it’s a kind of exciting process. When it's done I hand them over to my Dad who hand frames them. You have a very distinct style and are known to paint a lot of birds. What is it
about Australia’s native bird species that inspires you?
To be honest, I had an average knowledge of our avian wildlife prior to a challenge from a friend that led to my jokingly painting the first magpie. That one painting led to people’s requests for more and more bird work until I found myself painting exclusively native bird works. The clientele would be educating me about their favourite species through their demonstrated passion and it opened my eyes and ears to the world of Australian birds. With each picture I really came to appreciate the uniqueness of their personality, songs, calls, relationships, natural colour palette, plumage and connection to

the lands they inhabit. Each new work has become a bit of a journey to take what that bird represents, and interpret that into my own hyper-accentuated version of native beauty. You have an exciting exhibition of this collection coming up, can you give us all the details?
Yes, the launch party is happening Saturday November 16th 4.30pm at Ground Earth Café in Woolgoolga. It’s a ticketed event in a licensed venue that includes superb catering from the GE team, live music, good community vibes and great conversation. I will obviously be there myself chatting away, perhaps even performing a song or two at some stage. The series will be on display all summer, but the launch is the best chance to
educating. How does teaching music at Coffs Harbour TAFE fit into your overall artistic journey?
It fits like a glove. Whether it's onstage or in front of a class, it’s all about entertaining, grabbing an audience with your own passion for something and conveying the message.
Set goals, commit to your goals and rest assured that no ma er where you are, where you’re headed or where you land, you are where you are meant to be.
Like a band, the TAFE crew and I are constantly immersed in music, writing, rehearsing, recording, concepting, work-shopping, trying, failing, reviewing, learning, and improving. There are concerts and I still get that nervous rush going onstage even at that student level. We talk a lot about the business and marketing of music, and their goals and aspirations keep me hyped. It's very rewarding to be the ringmaster in that setting, prodding, guiding, creating and giving back to the community from which has been very good to me.
looking to make their mark?
BACK YOURSELF… Arts careers make no sense as business ventures and that’s not an all-bad thing. Artists generally are artists because they are square pegs in a round hole world. Ignore the inner doubts and embrace your uniqueness. Do you. Set goals, commit to your goals and be rest assured that no matter where you are, where you’re headed or where you land, you are where you are meant to be. Arts careers are more about the journey than the destination. You will be happier for taking a chance on yourself and knowing, rather than going through life wondering what could have been.
What’s next for you after "Hyper-Kolour Native"? Do you have any aspirations for the future when it comes to your art?

My own observation is that there was already a big audience for people who love birds, and my work just offered a modern twist on a traditional style. Native bird paintings are nothing new, but they don’t often come as a blend of detailed realism and ultra-vibrant psych-pop. The colours and details make them look just like the thing, but now they’re hyper-accentuated, dripping, floating close-up portraits that look like they’re popping off the wood. The recycled ply creates the balance between strong imagery and earthy vibes and in owning one of these, I think the people who buy them are aware these paintings are quite unique for the genre.

Study shows favourable health markers in dogs fed Raw Meat Based Diet
n this study, dogs were divided into two feeding groups: one group received a Raw Meat Fed diet (RMFD), while the other was given an extruded commercial diet (ECD). Over the course of a year, data on dental and ear canal health, serum biochemistry, urinalysis, and hematology were collected by a blinded veterinarian. The authors aimed to compare the risks associated with RMFDs and ECDs. RMFDs can pose risks of bacterial contamination and nutrient imbalances if not properly handled or formulated. Conversely, the processing methods used for ECDs can impact the bioavailability of proteins and amino acids, potentially destroying essential vitamins. Moreover, the high temperatures involved in creating commercial diets may lead to the formation of advanced glycation end products (AGEs), which are linked to chronic diseases such as cancer and cardiovascular issues. The study suggested that the diverse microbiome associated with RMFDs enhances nutrient absorption, possibly leading to improved health and reduced disease, as reported
by RMFD owners (Hiney et al., 2021). A significant finding was the difference in Alkaline Phosphatase (ALP) activity, which was 50% higher in dogs fed ECDs. High ALP levels can indicate liver disease or other health issues (Cleveland Clinic, 2021). Researchers proposed that elevated ALP could stem from nutrient modifications or AGE exposure in commercial diets, drawing parallels to human nutrition where processed foods are linked to chronic inflammation and oxidative stress (Hiney et al., 2021). Additionally, the study found elevated Blood Urea Nitrogen (BUN) concentrations in the RMFD group. While high BUN can indicate kidney issues, it may also reflect the high protein intake typical of RMFDs. Previous studies, including one led by Dr. Jean Dodds, support this, showing that elevated BUN levels in RMFD dogs often do not indicate pathology. Other benefits noted in the RMFD group included reduced inflammatory markers, improved dental and ear health, and better stool consistency compared to ECD-fed dogs (Hiney et al., 2021).

Shame is a powerful and complex emotion that can have profound consequences on our mental and emotional wellbeing and can significantly impact our quality of life. Shame tends to deeply ingrain itself in our sense of self.
Our sense of self is the perception we have of ourselves, the characteristics and traits that define us as individuals. When we lose our sense of self a gap is created in our identity. We may question who we are, and the inner critic’s volume gets louder which may result in increased anxiety, low self-esteem and confidence. Feelings of being a failure, and loneliness may impact our ability to maintain relationships and connections with people in our life.
When we experience shame, we live in constant fear of judgement by others in our lives; often we judge ourselves harshly and we may feel fear of being rejected by others. We may avoid certain experiences or people who make us feel this way, these avoidance strategies serve us to escape the pain, often leading to greater shame. Scientific research links shame with a physiological urge for self-protection. Shame and trauma generally go hand in hand. Sometimes individuals experience shame and guilt at the same time, however, there is a difference. Both involve a perceived sense of wrongness or badness, however, when the focus is on one’s specific act or behaviour, it is guilt. If

the focus is on one’s sense of self being wrong or bad, that is shame. It is a perceived deficit in how we view ourselves, our character, and our traits. Shame and guilt are unproductive and unhelpful to us and sometimes in the way we treat others.
Brene Brown defined shame as the intensely painful feeling or experience of believing that we are flawed and therefore unworthy of love and belonging. Brown states that shame is an all-encompassing experience.
Some potential causes of shame are:
• Childhood trauma.
• Being a victim of bullying.
• Self-criticism or judgement.
• Not living up to your own high standards.
• Rejection from others.
• Imposter syndrome-which is feeling your inadequacy or flaws will be exposed as a fraud, and you will appear to not know what you are doing.
• Experiencing constant failure.
Shame is a body-based emotion held in the body and the pain and discomfort can be both emotional and physical. Being a bodybased emotion our autonomic nervous system, particularly the sympathetic nervous system, gets activated, which leads to physical sensations and experiences.
Stepping out of a place of shame requires a feeling of safety to share how you are feeling, as
the first step is to name shame to tame shame. If shame remains unvoiced it continues to have control over your life and wellbeing. Sharing your story may have you feeling fearful and scared that the person hearing your story will think less of you. Shame fights against connection and acceptance from others.
Sharing your story in a space of safety will provide you with an inner feeling of safety. If we do not have an inner feeling of safety, we cannot share, and the feeling of safety is necessary to feel vulnerable.
Talking with a mental health professional with whom you have a connection can start this process of feeling internal safety. With internal safety shame can be worked through as something that is externalised rather than internalised. Externalising shame is empowering, and you develop more self-compassion, understanding of your inner world, self-love, and compassion for others.

Adigital detox is an intentional break from technology, designed to help you reconnect with the world, improve mental wellbeing, and reduce stress. If screen time is dominating your life, here are some practical tips to help you successfully implement a digital detox.
1. Set Clear Goals
Determine what you want to achieve from your detox. Whether it’s reducing anxiety, improving focus, or reclaiming time for other activities, setting a clear goal gives you motivation and direction. For instance, you might aim to limit social media use to an hour a day or avoid screens after 8 p.m. Specific goals help you track your progress and stay on course.
2. Create “No-Screen” Zones
Designate areas of your home or times of day to be screen-free. For example, make the dining table a no-screen zone to encourage better conversations, or turn your bedroom into a tech-free space for better sleep. This encourages relaxation and mindfulness, offering more time for reading, meditation, or
other offline activities.
3. Turn Off Notifications

Embracing change to ease a transition into aged care
Change is o en met with resistance, especially when it feels out of our control.
For many people, the idea of growing older and transitioning into residential aged care is daunting and may evoke fears of loss and uncertainty. It’s not just older people who feel the weight of this change — their children and families often bear the responsibility of making tough decisions, and can find the situation overwhelming.
However, the fear of ageing and moving into care doesn’t have to be insurmountable. With thoughtful planning and preparation, families can help ease the transition and reduce anxiety.
One of the biggest mistakes families can make is waiting until a crisis hits before making plans. In these moments, stress and panic often cloud judgment, amplifying fears for both the older person and their family. Starting the planning process early may allow time to consider the options and come to terms with the change for a smoother and less stressful transition.
A common emotional hurdle is the
attachment to the family home. The thought of leaving a place filled with years of memories can be difficult. Families can gently begin the process of letting go by decluttering and helping their loved one decide what’s truly important to keep. With time and preparation, the experience can be more positive, rather than just a rushed and painful task.

When Skye Rymill’s father was struck by a car while working as a motorsport race marshal, it not only changed the course of his life but hers as well.
Suffering from extensive injuries with little to no rehabilitation services available, her father’s struggles inspired the Southern Cross University graduate to help improve the lives of others by pursuing a career in occupational therapy (OT).
“Dad had an amazing strength about him. He once told me that disability was an obstacle, not a sentence. I look back and can see how his experience helped sow and nurture the seed that led me to OT,” said Skye.
As a driving accredited occupational therapist, Skye advocates for OT-based support systems around driver assessment, vehicle modification, adaptive and
assistive technology, functional capacity and driver training and retraining.
“Independence, dignity and accessibility are important factors for everyone in life, especially for people impacted by traumatic injury or clinical disorder,” said Skye. “A driver’s licence speaks to a sense of freedom and purpose, of recognition and recovery.”

“We primarily help people regain independence in their lives after an injury, an illness, a psychosocial disability, mental health conditions, or anything that might present as a barrier to just doing the things you need to do each day.”

Southern Cross University students are exploring diverse career paths in OT through professional placements in a wide range of settings, from schools to hospitals and corporate environments.
For student Lara, a placement in the on-campus health clinic in Coffs Harbour deepened her passion for occupational therapy.
“During my placement, I further explored my passion for working with older adults with neurological conditions, including those with traumatic brain injury and Parkinson’s disease. I supported their journey toward independence by recommending home modifications and implementing cognitive therapy strategies,” she said.
Fellow student Sophie completed her practicum in community and
Saged care: “I had the opportunity to build trust with clients through initial and follow-up home visits to better support them maintaining independence while facing various health challenges,” she said.
“It was incredibly rewarding to have clients recognise the value of my work, whether it was recommending equipment and home modifications or providing education to support their independence.”
A placement for student Marion confirmed her choice to pursue a career in OT. “Being able to visit people in their own environment and help implement changes that truly improve their daily lives has been incredibly rewarding. It's been a privilege to make a meaningful, positive impact,” she said.
Corporate and school placements for OT students
tudents also have the opportunity to complete placements outside of healthcare, such as in schools and corporate settings.
For student Kora, a placement at The Living School’s temporary location after 2022 Lismore floods enabled her to discover the power of play for child development.
“Because the kids were in a temporary school, there wasn’t a playground for them to play in,” she said.
“After observing their play, we started to notice that they really love games and are very competitive, but they have issues deciding what to play and what groups to play in.
“We wanted to give them a game for games so we created a spinner wheel. They come up to it, spin it, it lands on a game and that’s their choice decided for them.”
A novel partnership with dairy cooperative Norco last year also provided valuable experience for students in occupational rehabilitation.
The students worked with the Norco team to develop workplace education, assessment and resources aimed at preventing workplace injuries and enhancing employee wellbeing.
“These rural settings have provided us with a remarkable opportunity to observe and immerse ourselves in the unique cultures associated with agricultural practices, which differ greatly from clinical settings like hospitals,” said student Lachlan. Practitioners must be registered with the Occupational Therapy Board of Australia (OTBA) to practise in Australia.
Southern Cross University offers a four-year Bachelor of Occupational Therapy at the Gold Coast and Coffs Harbour campuses.

All of us, uniting to ensure that the voices of those who have been ignored for too long are finally heard. That’s why I am running. I’m proud to have been selected as the community independent candidate. Our community deserves a representative who listens, who cares and who knows how to get things done.
As an independent candidate, I am free from party factions, donor obligations or lobby group influence. That means I can vote on legislation in accordance with the interests of our community, which is needed now more than ever.
We are fortunate to live in such a beautiful region, which we cherish for its relaxed way of life. However, we face serious challenges that have been ignored for far too long. We only need to look to Victoria to see what a difference independents can make in this area. Through years of coordinated advocacy, Independent Helen Haines has helped secure over 50 new phone towers and eliminate hundreds of mobile black spots. I will fight to fix the mobile blackspots and get us faster access, so that no one is left behind, whether in an emergency or when trying to run a small business.
Better regional healthcare is also a priority for our community, with services stretched to breaking point. I will work with the Primary Health Networks, the NDIS and the aged care sector to deliver more and better services to our community.
It is also unacceptable that people are living in tents because they can’t afford rent, with families, retirees, and even those with fulltime jobs unable to find a home. Every individual deserves a safe and stable place to call home, and I will work in collaboration with the community to ensure that we create solutions that work for rural and regional areas, not just cities.
I’m not afraid to take on the big issues, but I’ll do it with compassion and listen to
what really matters to you. Our campaign is built on that foundation of understanding, collaboration and respect for every voice in our community.
Standing alongside such an impassioned community over the weekend, I was filled with a profound sense of hope. I hope that together, our community can have a voice that has genuine representation in parliament.

With Christmas just around the corner, many on the Coffs Coast are looking forward to celebrating the season. Christmas usually means presents, barbecues, and the beach. This year, cost-of-living pressures are affecting every family and Christmas this year may have a different feeling to other years.
To remain competitive with other destinations, it’s imperative that we align our o erings with what modern tourists desire.
Last month, we celebrated a significant milestone in Coffs Harbour’s journey of renewal: the reopening of Aanuka Beach House, just in time for summer. This iconic venue’s resurgence is more than just a welcome addition to our coastline; it’s a symbol of investment and revitalisation flowing into our city.
A generation ago, Coffs Harbour was renowned for its array of resorts that offered idyllic destinations for family holidays.
But as we look ahead, it’s essential to ask, what are tourists looking for now? The landscape of tourism has evolved dramatically. Today’s travellers are trending towards more experiential holidays. They’re not just seeking a place to stay; they’re yearning for immersive experiences that allow them to connect deeply with the destination’s culture, nature, and community. This shift presents an exciting opportunity for Coffs Harbour to showcase its unique offerings.
One of the pivotal aspects of this experiential trend is food. Culinary experiences have become a significant part of the holiday adventure. Visitors want to indulge in local flavours, savouring dishes that tell the story of the region. By highlighting our local produce, seafood, and farm-to-table dining, we can offer gastronomic journeys that are both different and unique. To remain competitive with other destinations, it’s imperative that we align our offerings with what modern tourists desire. This means
not only enhancing our attractions but also improving accessibility.
Since the pandemic, we’ve faced challenges with expensive flights in and out of Coffs Harbour Airport. High travel costs can deter potential visitors, impacting our local economy.
Recognising this, the Mayor and I took proactive steps by meeting with representatives from Qantas and Virgin Australia.
Qantas has added 3 extra flights per week starting late October flying direct to Melbourne and will expand services to Sydney from mid-December. This increase in flights is a step toward making travel to and from Coffs Harbour more affordable.
Additional capacity should bring prices down, benefiting both residents and tourists. The potential reintroduction of Virgin Australia flights and potential increased services from Rex Airlines would further enhance this positive trend. Affordable and accessible air travel is crucial for a thriving tourism industry, enabling us to compete effectively for the tourism dollar – especially when we’re competing against cheaper-to-fly-to destinations like Cairns, Byron, and the Gold Coast.

Blue Sky Community Services is marking the ‘16 Days of Activism against Gender-based Violence’ with an exciting full-day educational forum for community service workers on the Mid North Coast. Daniela, your company is new to the area - what services do you provide that people would be interested in?
Our firm’s main office is based in Bella Vista, Sydney, however we are expanding into the Coffs Harbour region and are excited to be amongst the established legal fraternity here on the coast. We started in March 2024 and have progressed to representing hundreds of clients so far. We have an office and practise in Queensland, as well as being able to represent clients in Victoria and Tasmania.
Our firm’s primary focus has been on establishing an Institutional Abuse law practice, that is founded upon the principles of trauma informed practice and client-centred care. However, it is important to recognise that the most successful firms are those that are adaptable and offer a diverse range of legal services, particularly for regional and rural areas. We also work across the practice areas of commercial law and trusts, personal injury, workplace law and criminal law. Who makes up your team and what are their roles?
Our legal team is comprised of our Principal, Francisco Gutierrez, who is based in Sydney. Francisco also owns and operates another firm in Sydney, Avondale Lawyers, and has been in practice for over 30 years. He has a wealth of experience and knowledge that he brings to our team, and we are very lucky to have him on board. Then there is me, who works between Sydney and Coffs Harbour. What is your area of expertise?
As outlined above, our firm started its foundational practice in Institutional Abuse law. We represent adults who experienced historical sexual and physical abuse as children, within all types of institutions, in a civil claims process. The primary form of relief in this area of law is compensation, which is aimed to assist survivors to obtain a sense of restoration and closure in their lives. Whilst it is challenging to work within the context of such horrific abuse on a daily basis, we as legal professionals are able to witness clients take control of their lives. We also represent individuals who have already had their claim finalised but wish to have their deed reviewed or re-opened.

Real estate has always been a passion of mine! From investing in properties and diving into renovations early on, I’ve always been fascinated by homes and their potential. This naturally led me to further explore interior design, and I gained

Be prepared, stay patient, and don’t hesitate to ask questions! Start by getting pre-approved for a loan so you know your budget, take advantage of the First Home Buyer grants and schemes as they can save you a lot and really take the time to research the market and understand what you want. Finding the right agent who will guide you through the process is key - it makes the whole experience less overwhelming and way more fun!
What common mistakes do you see sellers make when listing their properties, and how can they avoid them?
The biggest lesson I’ve learned throughout my varied career is the importance of relationships and always acting with integrity and honesty – even when what you’re saying is hard to hear. he Coffs Coast property market continues to be resilient despite interest rate headwinds in 2024 driven by its unique appeal, lifestyle advantages and economic factors.
Known for its stunning beaches, lush hinterland, and vibrant community, Coffs Harbour has become a focal point for buyers seeking both investment opportunities and a desirable place to live, work, play and raise a family.
Market Overview
In recent years Coffs Harbour has seen a surge in property interest, particularly as remote work trends have encouraged people to relocate from urban centres to more scenic, spacious environments. The latest data from CoreLogic indicates that the median house price in Coffs Harbour has reached approximately $768,000, reflecting a growth of around 6% over the past year to 9/24. This growth is indicative of a broader trend across regional Australia, where lifestyle factors are increasingly influencing purchasing decisions. Average days on market to sell in July 24 was approximately 65, however I have noticed that there has been a notable slowdown in buyer enquiry over the last 2 months. I believe this is due mainly to the impact
of the interest rate rises on the slowing economy so I expect days on market since July 24 to start lengthening when the stats are released. The unit market in Coffs has been a little more subdued. The median unit price is now around $505,000, being a drop of approximately -6% over the past year to 9/24 and is back to price levels seen at 9/22. The median price decrease over the past year can be largely attributed to a higher proportion of sales at the lower end of the unit market in the $400k to $600k price range as opposed to the top end which impacts the stats.
Rental Market Dynamics
The rental market in Coffs Harbour has experienced relative price stability over the year in general with a balance of demand and supply factors. According to CoreLogic, the median rent for houses is $640 per week and the median rent for units is $490 per week as at 9/24.
Investors are particularly drawn to Coffs Harbour for its rental yield, which currently sits at approximately 4.5% for houses and 4.9% for units. Additionally, the region’s appeal as a tourist destination has led to increased interest in short-term rentals, further enhancing investment opportunities.

an you tell us about your background and what inspired you to pursue a career in building and construction?
My father was a carpenter by trade and most weekends he would be working on a project around the home, whether it was fixing boats and cars or doing renovations I always enjoyed helping and learning new things. I knew I wanted to work with my hands in some capacity, carpentry had the most variety so I went in that direction.
Was there a moment or project in your early career that solidified your passion for building?
Early on I was given the opportunity to build a new home for a family member, this was
my first start to finish a building on my own. I was so grateful to get that opportunity and it definitely was the stepping stone that got me recognition as a young builder. How would you describe your signature style as a builder? What sets your work apart from others in the industry?
I wouldn’t say we have a particular style, as being a custom builder we pretty much tackle everything from ultra-modern to farmhouse styles. I believe our quality of work sets us apart. I have spent years working with all my trades to get the small details perfect, this is what I pride
myself on. We believe if you can dream it, we can build it!
Congratulations on your recent awards! Can you tell us about the projects that received recognition and what made them special?
The project was a modern home built on a very steep site and the details in it were beautiful, particularly the spiral staircase.
We received 4 awards for a recent build we did at Sandy Beach - Finalist Unique and Difficult Sites; Winner Custom Build Home over $1.5 million; Winner Custom Build Home of the Year and Winner of Overall Home of the Year. The award of Overall Home of the Year was very special, it's one award I have always had
a goal to win. The project was a modern home build on a very steep site and the details in it were beautiful, particularly the spiral staircase.
What elements do you believe contributed most to your success in these projects?

What current trends in home building and design do you find most exciting or relevant?
An emerging trend is the integration of curves and arches in design. Sharp angles are being replaced by softer and more organic shapes to create visually appealing spaces, this trend adds a touch of elegance to Australian homes.
How do you incorporate new technologies or innovations into your building processes?
Currently we are using new estimating software which allows us to provide a very accurate estimate of the build cost. We can also use it to monitor costs during the
build and for project management
How do you ensure that you understand and meet the needs and desires of your clients during a project?
Communication is the key, always talking and making sure the owner is involved wherever possible to get the best result. At the end of the day it is their home, and we want them to be happy.
What advice would you give to someone looking to start a career in the building Industry?
It’s a great industry, with plenty of opportunity. My advice if you are looking for work would be to show how keen you are. Don’t just call or email, visit the builder and offer to help to gain experience. It’s all about a good attitude and willingness to work hard. Looking ahead, what are your goals for the future of your building business?
Our goal is to be the No.1 custom builder in our region. To achieve this, we have very particular short-term goals to make every aspect of the build process the highest quality possible.

Currently we are building a beautiful new home in Mullaway, it is another amazing home with beautiful views looking south to Woolgoolga.

Tell us about your business, what is the history?
Founded in 2009 as a family business with a focus on bespoke renovations and joinery, and architectural homes, we now have a team of 19 full time tradespeople and staff. We love our local community, and are proud to be established in such a beautiful part of the world employing

Can you tell us about your journey into kitchen and cabinet design? What inspired you to specialise in this field?
I started my building career renovating heritage homes and I always appreciated the fine details of the carpentry and joinery in those lovely old homes. Ever since, I have been drawn towards the high detail and precision that kitchen design and construction requires. Luckily along the way we have picked up some amazingly talented trades, designers, artists and makers that share so much knowledge and insight that propels us even further.
How did you acquire the skills and expertise needed to excel in joinery design?
We have a team of experienced craftsmen and designers working in a highly collaborative environment, which allows us to learn from each other’s expertise, insights, and share knowledge. Each team member brings a unique skill set, from traditional woodworking techniques to modern design principles.
Over the years we have completed many challenging projects, and gained valuable
experience in many facets of kitchen design. We have also worked with many talented local architects to complete some really beautiful larger building projects.
What is your design philosophy when it comes to creating functional and aesthetically pleasing kitchens and cabinetry?
The number one rule we follow is to first gain insight into individual clients personal taste and practical needs. From here we can begin to design a kitchen that is aesthetically pleasing to the individual and fits practically into their space. Each client is very different, and often the process begins with asking a lot of questions, and gaining as much personalised information as possible. We enjoy the process of tailoring designs to each individual home and client, suggesting practical solutions and design details, but also carefully listening to our clients’ brief and preferences.
How do you balance practicality with style in your designs?
Elegant style is often gained with simplicity and practicality. In designing the kitchen, it is essential that it is both welcoming and pleasing
as well as a practical space. By working with high quality hardware and sound design principles, practicality and style is easily balanced.
Tell us about your most recent accolades and the project that got you the win.
We were honoured to win the overall Housing Industry Australia (HIA) Kitchen of the Year award this year, following on from winning the Overall Kitchen Design and Small Kitchen of the Year awards in last year’s HIA Awards. Our work has also been featured in prominent architectural articles, particularly our bespoke copper work.

There are also some wonderful modern kitchen products, from Swiss made Beka hardware to modern Laminex laminates that are regularly incorporated into projects, depending on individual needs and taste.
Are there any specific joinery techniques or
methods that you find particularly effective or innovative and what current trends are you seeing in kitchen design? How do you incorporate these trends into your work?
Trends shift and flow, but we tend to focus more on the individual clients’ taste. Natural products such as hardwood and copper seem to be making a resurgence in style which we find appealing. In our beautiful coastal surroundings we enjoy incorporating natural and sustainable products into our projects.
How has technology influenced the field of kitchen design and cabinet making?
Kitchen hardware and accessories have developed a lot in recent years, with many functional and exciting new products being available. This greatly benefits the design process, with high quality products being available for almost any application.
Are there any upcoming projects or trends you’re particularly excited about?
We have greatly enjoyed in recent years working with many talented local architects including Amanda Nunes, Armstrong architects, G2 Architects, Design Studio 22, Dan Bowland Design and Walk North Architects. We are excited to be collaborating with these architects and others into the future, in our capacity as home builders as well as cabinetmakers.
What is your favorite aspect of being a kitchen and cabinet designer?

Can you tell us about your journey into kitchen design and what inspired you to pursue this field?
I got into kitchen design as I wanted to be part of the process from beginning to end, seeing the final pieces come together and hearing from the client they are happy is extremely rewarding.
What do you think sets your design philosophy apart from others in the industry?
We use renders to help the client visualise their kitchen, we make sure we communicate any issues we may recognise to ensure that what is seen on the screen, transfers aesthetically and practically to the real-world space.
Who or what influences your work the most as a kitchen designer?
The customer. We want to ensure they are happy with every aspect of the finished product. We rely on word of mouth, completing projects to the highest standard, ensuring we can continue to deliver a high-
end service for decades to come. Can you walk us through your design process? How do you begin a new project?
We meet with the client on site, measure the space and draw up a render so they can see what their joinery project will look like. Once they’re happy with the render we finalise the scope of works and move forward from there.

The goal of this project was to open the space right up, provide plenty of storage and practical use of the space whilst keeping to the overall style of the house. Can you tell us about your background and a moment or project in your early career that solidified your passion for building?
I (Dan) grew up locally and completed my carpentry apprenticeship in Bellingen, before moving to Brisbane to further my experience and skills in residential building. I worked for some high-end, award-winning builders and architects on some very unique and one-of-a kind projects. From steep multi-level luxury builds to transformational renovations these projects solidified my passion for a challenge for executing unique high-end builds on difficult sites, and always maintaining detail and quality.
Congratulations on your recent awards! Can you tell us about the project that received recognition and what made it special?
We were winners of the HIA Northern NSW Custom Built Home $800,000-$1.5million and the GreenSmart Sustainable Home with Green Homes Australia. This home has now also progressed as a state finalist in the NSW GreenSmart Sustainable Home category. We are very proud of this build and very grateful for the acknowledgement and recognition
from HIA.
This home was an incredible fusion of the client’s vision and design, combined with material choices and craftsmanship. It blends into its natural surrounds, and features a formed onsite concrete entrance, shiplap and standing seam cladding, recycled timber bricks, and unique features and finishes throughout. We are so thankful to the wonderful owners for allowing us to build them such a beautiful home!
How do you ensure that you understand and meet the needs and desires of your clients during a project?
We are a small family run business where you deal with me and my wife Kirilee directly throughout the whole building process, and we ensure we are always surrounded by a highly skilled and conscientious team. Communication and a good working partnership is key, and our client’s satisfaction is our priority. There is a lot of reward in seeing a design take life and handing over the finished product is an exciting day for us.
Are there any upcoming projects that you’re particularly excited about that you can share with us?
Yes, we have a few very exciting projects in the works including the possibility of
an old dairy bales conversion to a luxury holiday stay, and a BAL-FZ (Flame Zone) build on a steep slope. BAL-FZ is the most extreme bushfire rating that can be applied to building design and construction and no doubt will have a few challenges. It will require the use of industry leading systems, products and materials to meet very stringent requirements. I can’t wait to share more about this project as it progresses. Looking ahead, what are your goals for the future of your building business? Our goal is to focus on custom architecturally designed projects. Can you tell us about the charity event and its main goals? The 'Hope 4 Haiti' Dinner and Auction is a biennial event by Frontier Projects Inc. that raises crucial funds for children and families in Haiti facing severe food, education, and welfare challenges. With the promise that 'every cent gets sent,' all proceeds directly support life-changing programs in local Haitian communities.
What inspired you to organise this event, and how did the concept come about?
The ‘Hope 4 Haiti’ event was born from a collaboration between myself, Cheryl and John Ward of Frontier Projects Inc., and a team of Coffs locals. It’s all about ‘local families giving hope to global families.’ I’m honoured to MC and lead the auction, raising vital funds for Haiti. The real inspiration comes from the children whose lives we’re changing, shown in powerful videos during the event. Who will benefit from the funds raised at this event, and what specific projects or initiatives will they support? The funds raised will support orphans, children, and families in Carrefour, Port-au-Prince, and students in Bouvier. Tickets are $75, covering a 3-course dinner, live music, door prizes, and auction items like holidays, art, and more! All proceeds support our programs in Haiti.
Have you partnered with local businesses or sponsors for the event, and what benefits do they gain from their involvement? Absolutely! Local businesses have been fantastic, generously donating auction items and promoting the event instore and on social media. We are incredibly grateful for their support. Sponsors benefit significantly from their involvement by gaining valuable exposure through Frontier Projects' event promotions, both online and on posters. Major sponsors are acknowledged in person during the event and receive ongoing recognition afterward. What motivated you personally to get involved in organising and promoting this charity event? I got involved in organising and promoting this charity event after I had the privilege of joining the first Frontier Projects Haiti team trip in 2012. Since then, I’ve returned many times, sometimes on my
own, with the team, or alongside Mel. Despite facing my own lifelong health challenges, I’m continually moved by the resilience and hope of the children and orphans who deal with immense food insecurity, health issues, and educational barriers. Their unbreakable spirit and joy inspired me to become the Ambassador for Frontier Projects in Haiti. The Hope 4 Haiti Dinner and Auction is our biggest event of the year, and if my involvement can inspire others to make a difference in the lives of these vulnerable children, then I’m all in.
Can you share a memorable story from past events that showcases the impact of the charity’s work? At the last Hope 4 Haiti auction the atmosphere was electric as two friends battled it out in a bidding war for a coveted item. As the auctioneer, I fueled the excitement, and in the end, a generous local won the prize. To my surprise, she gifted it to her friend, who had truly hoped to win. This spirit of giving helped us exceed our fundraising goals, aligning perfectly with Frontier Projects’ “every cent gets sent” promise. The funds directly supported educational and welfare programs that changed the lives of hundreds of children in Haiti.
