Welcome to the MARCH 2025 ISSUE of Greater Port Macquarie FOCUS.

What a stunning edition this one is. Our Women In Business feature is always a huge edition and this year is no different. This year’s theme for our women was how do they achieve that work/ life balance... and although it’s tough I think they nailed it. A HUGE thank you to Amelia and Kathleen from Macdonald Jones Homes who allowed us to use the gorgeous two storey display home as our shoot location this year, I’m pretty sure everyone who stepped into it wanted to buy it. Our cover star is the

beautiful Melinda Dalton. Hard working mum of 3 who also is one of the owners of Lord Street and Flynns Beach pharmacies. Juggling work and home life and finding much needed time for some self care is something Melinda seems to have worked out, even if some days it doesn’t feel that way..lol. Check out Melinda’s interview on pages 16-19 and our fabulous Women In Business feature starting on page 78.

Inside this issue - Yes our amamzing WIB feature pretty much is the bulk of this edition but we do have some other amazing feature stories too. We had a chat with Citizen of

Melinda Dalton

Please introduce yourself to our readers and your connection to the Port Macquarie region.

Hi, I’m Melinda Dalton and I am one of the owners of Flynn’s Beach and Lord Street Pharmacy. I grew up in Laurieton and went to Laurieton Primary School, then onto Kendall Central School before finishing Year 11 and 12 at MacKillop Senior College. I went onto study a Bachelor of Pharmacy at Charles Sturt University in Wagga Wagga before moving back to Port Macquarie. It was here that I met my now husband Sam and our adventures started! Whilst continuing to work as a pharmacist, Sam and I created and ran our outdoor adventure business Edge Experience, offering mountain biking, rock climbing, abseiling, kayaking and bass fishing adventures. We may have even had to have a TV wheeled into our wedding reception whilst we were off having our photos for our guests to watch our TV debut on Sydney Weekender with James Tobin! We went onto build a successful emergency risk management, training and safety business Sparta Solutions which we expanded into 3 states. After taking some time out and

feeding our adventurous spirits whilst we took off to travel Australia in our caravan (cue Covid-19!) we have been able to settle down and focus on our goals and more importantly passions!

As a family we always make sure that we leave time for adventures. We love to surf, kayak, rock climb, sail and mountain bike all over the country...

What inspired you to become a pharmacist, and how did you get started in the profession?

My very first job was a junior pharmacy assistant at Laurieton Pharmacy. I always knew I wanted to be in the medical field and I loved the way pharmacists are so accessible but still able to make a big impact on people’s health. What services do you offer beyond dispensing medication that people might not be aware of?

We are slowly evolving Flynn’s Beach Pharmacy’s beach side vibe stocking beach bags, towels, thongs and hats for everything you need for a day at the beach, as well as locally handcrafted giftware and now MCoBeauty! However our

main focus at Flynn’s is aged care. We have a team of 7 aged care pharmacists working onsite in many of our local aged care facilities and back in the store alongside our highly specialised team of managers and assistants. Being able to provide residents with specialised tailored advice and prompt service is very rewarding. We have a great rapport with our nursing staff colleagues and we pride ourselves on going that extra mile to achieve the best outcomes.

Lord Street Pharmacy is not being left out in its revamping as it evolves to encompass my other passion, integrative healthcare. We have been lucky enough to score another local gem, Naturopath Melanie Lock, to our team 4 days a week, meaning we are able to combine the expertise of our pharmacists with a naturopath. Our “farm to freezer” Farmdoor meals have a fantastic following that is continuing to grow and we are on our way to becoming an NDIS approved pharmacy.

Continued over...

As one of the owners of Flynn’s Beach and Lord Street Pharmacy, how do you juggle being a healthcare professional, running a business, and family life?

It certainly is a juggling act! With 3 children in Year 11, Year 7 and Year 2 and an adventurous husband with his own career, we are a busy household. We definitely live by the mantra - work hard/play hard. I love my role in the pharmacy, seeing all of my lovely regulars and servicing our local community as well as my time onsite in aged care facilities as an Aged Care Onsite Pharmacist (ACOP). Ensuring that we continue to evolve and expand to be what our community wants is what drives me professionally. I am fortunate to have powerhouse Sophie Rourke as a business partner who also manages the busy mum life and growing our businesses, and I think we make a great team. She has been the driving force behind the new Aged Care Onsite Pharmacist roles and her extensive knowledge in aged care is invaluable. But we as a family always make sure that we leave time for adventures. We love to surf, kayak, rock climb, sail and mountain bike all

over the country (and the world when we get the opportunity) but there aren’t many places that top our beautiful local coastline.

How does your family feel about your role in the community?

I do love that our community is small enough that I get to see lots of

familiar faces,

but big enough that my family and I are still able to experience many

opportunities.

They love it and are quite frankly used to being “in business”. I have been in business in some form most of my working adult life. My husband Sam and I built a successful emergency risk management, training and safety business expanding into 3 states of Australia.

After taking some time out and feeding our adventurous spirits whilst we took off to travel Australia in our caravan (cue Covid-19!) we have been able to settle down and focus on our goals and more importantly passions! What do you love most about being part

of the Port Macquarie community?

I grew up in Laurieton, competing at Flynn’s Beach SLSA carnivals and went to MacKillop so Port Macquarie is home. I do love that our community is small enough that I get to see lots of familiar faces, but big enough that my family and I are still able to experience many opportunities.

How does being a pharmacist in a regional town differ from working in a big city?

I’ve mentioned before that I love my wonderful regular customers that come to see me and our team, but I also love the variety that being a pharmacist in a regional town offers.

I can be dispensing and counselling in our stores, vaccinating staff and residents in our aged care facilities, attending Medication

Advisory Committee meetings or conducting Home Medication Reviews. I am grateful for the great working relationships that I have been able to build with our local GP’s, nurses and allied health.

How do you see the role of local pharmacies contributing to community health and well-being?

Pharmacies are an accessible source of knowledgeable information and being able to assist the community with vaccinations, UTI treatments and more to come ensures people have ready access to care.

At Lord Street Pharmacy, our pharmacist and naturopath teams approach to healthcare combines conventional pharmaceutical care with evidence-based complementary therapies, ensuring that our customers receive the best possible care and highest quality supplements.

What’s one thing you wish more people knew about their local pharmacist?

Sophie, Joe, the team and I really do have our patient’s best interests at the core of everything we do. Sophie and I alternate in offering a FREE 24/7 on call service for all of our Flynn’s

Beach Pharmacy residents in our aged care facilities, meaning we will never leave one of our customers without urgent medicines, even though this involves 2 ferry trip crossings for me, we do really care!

What keeps you passionate about your work every day?

It is an exciting time for pharmacy, as we are becoming increasingly able to achieve our full potential with the expanding scope of practice offered to trained pharmacists, alongside our new roles of being Aged Care Onsite Pharmacists.

We are continually working on perfecting our services and products and making our pharmacies an enjoyable place to visit. If only I was able to put all of my ideas and plans into practice as quickly as they come into my head! Do you have any exciting plans or goals for your pharmacies in the future? We have plenty of goals we are working towards and wish to achieve in both of our pharmacies. I am so thankful that my business partners share these same goals and enthusiasm.

We are excited to see the integrative wellness and naturopathic services take off in our Lord Street store as our community continues to take charge of their health and place importance on getting and keeping well. We are also very excited about what becoming an NDIS registered provider will mean for our community (watch this space!). At Flynn’s we can’t wait to expand the ever growing list of services we will be able to provide to our community and to continue to be the preferred supplier to our local aged care facilities with our exceptional service and care.

Thanks Melinda.

Anne

de Nijer

Anne de Nooijer se led in Port Macquarie 7 years ago and has been involved in the art scene here since, enjoying ge ing to know other fellow creatives in the area. She has curated an exhibition of works named In Skin, featuring seven other local female artists all exploring the concept of identity, which is on display at Home at Roto House through March.

Can you tell us about the inspiration behind the upcoming exhibition at Home at Roto House, and how the theme ‘In Skin’ came to life?

I have wanted to curate a group exhibition for a while and since the majority of my friends on the Mid North Coast are talented artists, I knew it would be a fun show to put on. The theme of the show is “identity”, as it’s been a topic on my mind a lot lately. I was born in the Netherlands and moved here seven years ago. Living in a different country to the one you grew up in, can make you contemplate who you are and why you act the way you do. Once I had a confirmed list of artists, we discussed the “Identity” theme and Sara Jayne Price literally dreamt up our title ‘In Skin’. Sara urgently messaged me the next morning with the words ‘In Skin’ and it resonated deeply within myself and the rest of the artists. It’s

such an interesting theme to contemplate and research. What does it mean to be in our own skin?

I worked through so many ideas, but I’m happy with the artworks I created in the end and the personal reflections in them.

What does the concept of ‘identity’ mean to you personally, and how has it influenced your work for this exhibition?

I’ve found it such a complicated thing to wrap my head around. I had to do some deep thinking and sit with what it meant for me, and to be honest, I still haven’t quite figured it out, but that’s maybe the point of it all, too. Do we ever really know who we are and what our identity is, or is it all very fluid and keeps changing? It was really fun to make works for this exhibition as you can make this subject as broad or specific as you like. I worked through

so many ideas, but I’m happy with the artworks I created in the end and the personal reflections in them. All of the artists deeply considered the theme and created really personal works. It is such a privilege to show my work alongside such a talented bunch.

You’ve brought together women artists from the Mid North Coast for this show. What was the process of curating the exhibition like, and what drew you to these particular artists?

I brought together seven incredible, female artists, all working in different styles and mediums. Cheryl Blacklock, Alana Cabrera, Lucy Juhnke, Carly Marchment, Libby Mitchell, Sara-Jayne Price and Alejandra Ramirez. I am so happy everyone said yes when I asked them! Continued over...

I wanted to curate a group of artists whose works and practices are very different but can nicely compliment each other while exhibited together. I feel so lucky to call these talented women my friends, so it was a really easy selection process and I didn’t have to bribe anyone to be a part of it. I truly admire all of the women and their works and I’m really proud of the art scene on the Mid North Coast. Everyone works hard to put themselves out there and pursue their art dreams and I’m happy to play a small part in helping make it happen this time around.

How do you see In Skin sparking conversations about identity, femininity,

me contemplate perceived identity versus selfidentity. If I see someone wearing Doc Martens, I could assume “Hey, someone like me!” but they may have just borrowed the shoes and personally don’t like them at all. The exhibition invites the viewer to look within themselves and explore what identity means for them. How do they think their family perceives them, and does that differ from how their friends perceive them? …

Your work often combines weaving, textiles, natural and upcycled materials, reflecting your philosophy of sustainability and conscious creation. What can visitors expect from your pieces in this exhibition?

I’m really passionate about sustainability within my practice, so my pieces are made with hand dyed cotton, using materials I find

and personal expression?

All of the artworks in the exhibition are very personal, and some might not immediately scream identity. For example, one of my artworks depicts shoes and plants. I think our shoes and clothes can say a lot about us, but they aren’t always perceived in the way they were intended. This concept made

in and around my house, for example, onion skin, eucalyptus leaves, avocado skins and pits. I’m also regularly digging around the local op shops to find second hand fabric to use in my work, which I did for sections of these works too. My works are predominantly stretched on op shop frames as well. If you‘re patient and know what you’re looking for, the op shops can be really resourceful! I have made five new artworks for this show, including my biggest work to date and my first ever Diptych.

Home at Roto House is such a unique venue for an art exhibition. How does the setting contribute to the experience of viewing the artworks?

Roto House and the grounds are so unique to the area and Jess (the owner of Home At Roto) has created such a friendly and welcoming community space. We are very lucky to have this beautiful heritage house now used in a contemporary way. On top of this, I used to work for Jess, in the little coffee caravan on the grounds as a barista, all the way through the Covid times, so this place plays an important role in my Port Macquarie / Australian identity.

I’m also regularly digging around the local op shops to find second hand fabric to use in my work, which I did for sections of these works too.

What do you hope visitors take away from In Skin?

I hope visitors are moved, inspired and get to spend time with the amazing artworks to really soak them in. All of the pieces are very moving and personal, so I can’t wait to see the show come together, hanging in the beautiful space.

Beyond this exhibition, what’s next for you and Studio Frannie? Any upcoming projects or collaborations?

A holiday if something sells haha. I am working on my very first solo exhibition that I’m aiming to have sometime this year. I was also selected to be part of a mentorship program, facilitated by Newcastle Art Space. The program holds its own exhibition which I’m excited to be a part of. I’m looking forward to teaching some classes again now that the weather is cooling down, which will be weaving and contemporary sewing. Keep an eye on my instagram for more information: @studiofrannie or www. studiofrannie.com

Thanks Anne.

AN INDEPENDENT FUTURE:

I’m Caz Heise, and as your Independent candidate, I am ready to put this region first. TIME FOR REAL CHANGE

We have much to celebrate in the region I’m proud to have called home for the past 20 years. Our stunning coastline, vibrant local arts scene and resilience in the face of adversity is worth celebration. However, we are facing major challenges. For example, we have some of the worst health outcomes in the country, a severe childcare shortage, and mobile black spots that are putting lives and livelihoods at risk.

Fixing our broken healthcare system

Our healthcare system is failing too many people. GP shortages leave entire towns without bulk-billing doctors, mental health services are underfunded, aged care is in crisis, and NDIS participants face unacceptable delays.

That’s why I have released a plan for:

• More bulk-billing doctors and urgent care clinics so people can see a GP when they need one.

• Expanding mental health services by increasing funding for local organisations and ensuring regional communities get their fair share.

• A stronger aged care workforce to ensure older residents receive the dignity and care they deserve.

• A better NDIS that delivers timely and fair support to participants.

“As a nurse and healthcare leader, I know firsthand what’s broken - and how to fix it.”

Making childcare accessible and affordable

Families in Cowper are struggling to find childcare. I’ve just released analysis showing that there simply aren’t enough places - much of our community is classified as a childcare desert, meaning there are more than three children per available place. In some parts of our region, there are seven children for every one childcare spot.

This crisis is forcing parents - especially women and healthcare workers - out of the workforce.

We need urgent action to:

• Expand childcare places with more centres and family daycare options.

• Make childcare more affordable with increased federal support.

• Support and retain early childhood educators with better pay and conditions.

• Improve flexibility, including out-ofhours and rural childcare solutions.

• Childcare isn’t just a service - it’s essential for working families, local businesses, and our economy.

Ending mobile black spots

Let’s talk about mobile black spots - a very important issue and a challenge that many of you have raised.

Reliable mobile coverage is essential for safety, business, and daily life - but Cowper has been neglected in mobile infrastructure funding.

My recent analysis found that Cowper received just six funded base stations across eight funding rounds - compared to 12 in neighbouring Lyne and 48 in Indi, 662% more over 10 years. The difference? Indi had independent MPs who worked with their community to develop a Regional Connectivity Plan that delivered results.

This failure puts lives at risk during emergencies and hurts businesses trying to operate in rural areas. We need a representative who will fight for our fair share of investment and demand better infrastructure for our region.

Delivering real change for Cowper

Over the coming months, I will continue announcing practical policies for our region. This election, we have the power to shape our community. I promise to stand with you, amplify your voices, and fight for a fairer, stronger Cowper.

Di Bannister

CITIZEN Of The YEAR

Di Bannister was recently recognised as Citizen Of The Year at the Port MacquarieHastings Australia Day Awards for 2025 for her incredible contribution to the community including 30 years of volunteer service at Lifeline Mid Coast!

Hello Di, congratulations on being named Citizen of the Year! How did it feel to receive this recognition and what does this award mean to you personally?

I felt excited to be considered and then humbled when I received the award. The award really has caused me to reflect on the journey of the past 30 years. I am very proud of the work I have done in the local community, and I am still very passionate about our community. You’ve dedicated 30 years to volunteering with Lifeline Mid Coast, what keeps you passionate and motivated in this work?

I believe Lifeline aligns with my personal values and beliefs. The work on the phones as a volunteer enables me to engage with people from all over Australia that I would not meet in other ways. My passion is people, I get to meet the most amazing people, the volunteers who

volunteer and the people who reach out to Lifeline, both are inspiring.

The people seeking help motivate me to stay well trained and up to date so I can support them to the best of my ability.

As Lifeline Mid Coast’s trainer since 2012, you’ve trained more than 280 crisis supporters. What is the most rewarding part of this role?

Training is such a brilliant chance to work with people. I continue to work with accredited volunteers who have the opportunity to assist with training and also the people who are wanting to gain new skills and challenge themselves. Meeting students at that place is an amazing opportunity to offer education wrapped up in the possibility to grow personally. The reward is a student saying something like “I wish I had done this training years ago!” and the volunteers loving the opportunity to continue to infuse their practice from engaging.

Can you tell us about some of the training programs you’ve been involved in? How do they help equip the community?

The primary training we offer at Lifeline Mid Coast is the CSWT training for the volunteers who man the 13 11 14 crisis line. Often the students/volunteers are engaged in other community organisations and the training encourages non judgmental acceptance of people. Our volunteers are often sought out by family and friends to be a listening ear at times of crisis. The training I offer is about working in the community before and after natural disasters. I have worked with organisations like SES and volunteer fire brigades as well as people in the community who have stepped up in times of disaster. They have engaged with trainings like Accidental Counsellor, Mind Your Mates, All About You and Domestic and Family Violence Training.

What are some of the biggest mental health challenges facing our local community right now?

There are a few areas that Lifeline have focused on over the years. Suicide prevention is a core focus of all that Lifeline does. This has broadened into other areas of training that is of value to the community. Lifeline recognises that loneliness and disconnection are often the drivers of poor mental and physical health yet there is often not the opportunity for a conversation around these topics. This is where training such as Accidental Counsellor comes in or Mind Your Mates where we can, as a group, explore barriers to having meaningful conversations with friends, family or coworkers around these topics.

You’ve done things like lead teams into remote areas during times of natural disaster. Can you share a bit about these experiences and this type of work?

Working in our local area after the floods, the fires and then COVID brought out a real sense of the Australian community. Australians are there for each other and want to show up when they are needed. Going out and hearing the stories where volunteers or trained workers supported the community and each other, brought home that we are the lucky country. We do survive hard times when we have each other. I always wanted to leave an area with a better understanding of their unique experience and hopefully leave some tools they could draw on to further enhance their helping activities.

Be the brave family member, friend or colleague who is willing to say “I can see/hear that you’ve been going through a rough time. Would you like to talk?

remember how you made them feel. What message would you like to share with the wider Port Macquarie community about mental health and crisis support?

Finally, how can locals get involved with Lifeline Mid Coast and help make a difference?

What advice do you have for people who want to better support their friends, family, or colleagues struggling with mental health?

Be prepared to be uncomfortable. It is not easy to talk about such a personal topic as our health and when you add mental health it can be harder again. Be the brave family member, friend or colleague who is willing to say “I can see/hear that you’ve been going through a rough time. Experts have their place in mental health and crisis support. There are some amazing services that people can access where they will get the professional help and ongoing support they need to recover. People also need everyday people. While someone is waiting for their appointment, they would benefit from someone asking how they are going? Would they like to go for a walk or have a cuppa? Go back to the disaster recovery work learnings – be the community where we support people in crisis, even when there aren’t raging flood waters there is a crisis in our community and we can be effective helpers!

We offer opportunities for volunteering around the local area. My main focus is the 13 11 14 crisis line. This is a valuable worthwhile opportunity for someone to train to be a crisis supporter on the phones. It is a commitment and takes time and energy, having said that the sense of purpose and meaning it gives is second to none. We also have 7 shops in our local area that are in need of generous people to work in the shops – front of shop or in the sorting area etc. We need truck drivers to collect goods and we need sorters to also make that work. Anyone who volunteers in the shops help generate the income to run the valuable service of 131114 and the suicide prevention and postvention services we offer locally as well.

Thanks Di.

Hi William and Jacob! Congratulations! Your store on Blackbutt Road, Port Macquarie has just turned one! What are you most proud of and how will you be celebrating this milestone? Thank you! What we’re most proud of is how we took the concept in our heads and turned it into something even better than we had originally imagined. We are still in awe of what we’ve accomplished every day as we drive up and see the big sign above our door because we’re no longer just an online store. Every time we hear from our visitors how much they love our space, products and experiences, we are reminded how glad we are that we took this big leap. We love getting to know the people who visit us regularly to pick up their favourites. We will celebrate with some special offers and then also some bubbles at home. What have been your most successful tools or attributes as business owners that have enabled you to steer Lunico Candle Co. from an idea to successful reality with a bricks and mortar store location? Our success has been driven by a combination of strategic decision-making, adaptability and a commitment to quality and community. Prior to opening on Blackbutt Road, we spent a couple of years forming a deep understanding of our

target customers and prioritised what would resonate with them. As we navigated our first year with a physical shopfront, we got really quick on our feet and we realised how incredibly resilient and innovative we are.

Lunico Candle Co. is proudly celebrating its first birthday with a highly successful year in business. Proprietors, and all round candle lovers William and Jacob Jollymore chat with Focus about their passion for creating quality products and their vision for another successful year ahead.

We love getting to

know the people who visit us regularly to pick up their favourites. We will celebrate with some special offers and then also some bubbles at home.

Authenticity is in everything we do. We don’t just sell candles; we create an experience. Telling stories and allowing people to see who we are as people, and why we do what we do, has helped build connections and trust with people in our community and beyond. We want Lunico Candle Co. to be more than just a candle shop – we’re a brand that people can connect and have fun with.

It is clear your products are born from your inspiring creativity and you share your passion with your customers through your high level of customer service and increasingly popular candle making workshops. Who or what inspires you both creatively? There are three big things that currently inspire us creatively, starting with nostalgia and having fun. A lot of what we have on our shelves right now are things that, much like a song, take us back to a time

or place. There are also times where we sit down and think, “What needs to be said?” Those things end up on our Witty Wicks candles, and if you’re a boss, you may have received one of our not-so-subtle ‘It Could Have Been an Email’ candles. Last but not least, we’re inspired by each other. Neither one of us could do this without the other.

You have also firmly established yourselves within the community and curated a network of industry peers and connections. How important have these relationships been to you in the continued success of your business? Being a part of our local business community is truly the best club to be in. The relationships we’ve already built have helped us steer our business, come up with some amazing collaboration opportunities and sometimes they’ve even just helped keep us sane! It’s been really encouraging to see how local businesses are so willing to work together to drive success. We have the honour of having our visitors greeted at the door by Retro Rita, thanks to Hello Koalas Gallery & Gift Shop, one of our beloved neighbours opposite us.

Smash erapy PMQ was brought to life last year by Misti, who decided this was definitely something we needed here in Port Macquarie. Smash erapy o ers both smash and spla er sessions; where you can safely smash or spla er to your heart’s content in a controlled environment simply as a fun energetic activity, or as a therapeutic release of emotion or trauma.

Hi Misti. What inspired you to create Smash Therapy PMQ, and how did the idea come to life?

I was looking for inspiration for an end of year event for my workplace, and thought a smash room would be a good team activity, but found the closest one was in the Hunter Valley. I decided I wanted to open one in Port, but it took over a year of planning with trying to find the right location and jump through hurdles with insurance.

My husband, his workmate, and another friend of ours built the physical rooms and helped bring my vision to reality. My husband, daughter and I did the rest of the fitout and after getting our family and friends to have a test run we were finally ready to open in October 2024.

Smash rooms have gained popularity globally, what do you think makes them so appealing, and how have people responded to yours in Port Macquarie?

Smash rooms offer an experience that no other place does. They can be used as a fun/risqué activity where you’re able to do something that would normally get you in trouble, but without any clean up or consequences. More importantly, Smash “Therapy” can be used for mental health purposes, to safely but physically release frustrations or trauma.

The response to us opening and the feedback has been really positive with a lot of people keen to try something different. People have been attending for a variety of reasons – simply for fun, some to blow off a bit of steam after a busy work week, and some to physically release built up emotional trauma after suffering bullying or losing a loved one,

the list goes on.

I understand that not everyone understands the concept, but to be clear this is in no way intended to promote violence, but rather offer an outlet where built up emotion is released in a safe, controlled space.

More importantly, Smash “ erapy” can be used for mental health purposes, to safely but physically release frustrations or trauma.

Can you walk us through a typical Smash Session experience? What can someone expect when they walk through your doors?

Anyone coming for a Smash Session will firstly be offered to sign our “Wall of Fame” at our entry. We will give you a plate to write down all the things that have been getting to you, this is taken into the room to smash as a symbolic release.

After getting into safety gear, you will be shown to your smash room, and given a crate of breakable items (and additional items if

extras purchased). There are tools you can use to break these items, or simply throw them and get a little physical workout at the same time!

You also offer Splatter Sessions, which seem like a fun and creative outlet. What has the feedback been like from people who have tried them?

Our splatter sessions have become a popular family activity, and all ages are able to participate in these. It’s incredibly messy but so much fun!

Our most memorable and rewarding group booking was Into The Wild – an organisation providing activities and support to youths needing some direction.

Groups are given a canvas per person to decorate and keep, paintbrushes and squirt bottles of paint. The idea is to paint the canvas, the walls, and each other! We have had constant positive feedback from this, and surprisingly equally as many adults are doing the splatter sessions as kids!

Safety is obviously a top priority. What steps do you take to ensure that every session, whether smashing or splattering, is both fun and safe?

We take safety very seriously. Obviously there are risks in this type of activity, so a waiver must be signed, but we make things as safe as we possibly can.

Every person is given safety gear to wear, including full body suit, boots, and protective headwear. Goggles are all that is required in

the Splatter Room. Safety instructions are provided to each person before their smash or splatter sessions, sessions are recorded, and we have staff available at all times to assist.

Group bookings are a big part of what you offer. What types of events have you hosted, and what makes Smash Therapy a great choice for group activities?

So far we’ve hosted end of year/Christmas parties, kids’ and adults’ birthday parties, team building sessions. We also have a gender reveal party coming up, and a ‘trash the dress’ session to look forward to.

Our most memorable and rewarding group booking was Into The Wild – an organisation providing activities and support to youths needing some direction. They used Smash Therapy PMQ as a demonstration that there are appropriate safe ways to release frustration or trauma, as opposed to taking it out in an unsafe manner.

It’s a great choice for a group activity because

it’s something completely different that most people haven’t done before. The Splatter Room is great as a fun group activity as we can have four people in a session together at a time. The smash sessions are also perfect for a group, although only one person is allowed into each smash room at a time we have viewing windows to keep it interactive – and often the people watching get as much entertainment as the ones inside the room.

How do you source the smashable items and materials for the sessions? Are there any particularly fun or unusual items people love to smash?

Most of our breakable items are purchased from Willing & Able, buying surplus unsellable goods that they would otherwise have to pay to dispose of. We love giving out novelty items to suit themes ie 18th birthday glasses etc. We also find that people are loving to smash bigger items such as TVs or printers.

For anyone looking to book a session, how can they get in touch, and what advice would you give to someone considering their first Smash or Splatter experience?

Sessions can be booked directly via our website www.smashtherapypmq.com.au

Otherwise call us on 0440 123 811, or send us a message via email or our socials.

Let’s face it, we choose to live in our coastal haven because it offers us the best of both worlds… a calm, relaxing lifestyle with access to (nearly) everything we want (but everything we need) while avoiding the horrors of peak hour traffic, endless queues, toll roads and more.

However over the years as the owner and chief curator of Meg + Me Boutique, I’ve observed that our coastal location sometimes calls for a reminder that our casual lifestyle means that you can be relaxed while still looking chic and polished. The key is finding the balance between being comfortable and appearing put-together, ensuring you still look effortlessly stylish without feeling overdressed. This season, we’re observing some fun international fashion trends making their way to our shores from faux leather skirts to animal prints. With a few tweaks, and some personal styling, these looks can easily be translated into our PMQ wardrobe, but it may not be the way we are seeing on the runways in Milan. Let’s take a closer look at the trends that are hitting our shelves this season and how with a bit of help you can make them your own.

Trend 1: Faux Leather Skirts

Faux leather skirts may seem like a bold choice for Port Mac, but they’re an easy and affordable way to stay on trend - especially when paired with the right textures. Think lightweight faux leather in warm honey tones that cocoon and move with you, not the heavy rich leathers you might associate with

colder climates. Our Designers Zoe Kratzmann and POL have both got beautiful faux leather skirts in this season, and when paired back with a lightweight knit or a crisp cotton shirt, edgy ankle boots or a cute sneaker this is an on trend look you can easily style for both work and play…

Trend 2: Animal Print

Some would argue that animal print has always been on trend, and for many it has. However we are seeing a real push when it comes to animal this season. Fortunately animal prints are versatile and timeless, so when you find a print and colour way that suits you, it will be with you for many more seasons than just this one.

When it comes to styling animal print, there’s two options. Minimal and chic, or top to toe (AKA Trinny Woodall) but my tip for keeping it chic and not overdone, is to use your animal print as an accent until you get the hang of it. Think animal print scarves, loafers, belts or handbags and you are well on your way to adding a classic touch of animal to your coastal chic wardrobe.

Trend 3: Keeping warm!

Something a little crazy I find about living in Port Macquarie is how cold it can get in winter

here! Now most of you will know that I am a Tassie Girl born and bred, so it surprises many when I tell them I have felt colder here in winter inside a house than I have felt outside in Tassie… sure we can get lovely sunny winter days, but if you’re venturing out early morning or after the sun goes down, it can be super chilly here!

One common mistake I see is people wearing too many layers of synthetic fibres, thinking that wearing more will make them warm. It won’t. It’s just going to make you sweat and then you will freeze even more. Take it from me, lightweight Merino wool and 100% cashmere or cashmere blends will be your best friends in winter (yes even a Port Macquarie winter) because not only do natural fibres keep you warm, they breath, naturally wicking away any moisture on your body. They may be an initial investment, but you will love them for years to come, I promise!

So as we begin to to fill our racks and shelves with our new season’s deliveries, let’s all remember that living a relaxed coastal lifestyle doesn’t mean we can’t seek inspiration from what is happening in the wider world. That way, we really CAN make sure we have the best of both worlds right here on our own doorstep!

ARTIST of the MONTH

For local art student Anne Round, taking a walk along Flynns Beach is a morning ritual that she does every day. On her daily walk she started noticing how much rubbish was on the beach and began picking it up as she strolled. This process has now evolved into an installation of sorts she calls The Wall, a large display of all the plastic pieces she collects from the beach.

Hi Anne, can you share a bit about yourself and what brings you to Flynns Beach everyday?

I am lucky enough to live quite close to Flynns Beach which I walk to everyday. I started doing this during Covid lockdowns when we were allowed 1 hour a day to exercise. Flynns was my go to, my beautiful backyard, where nature and the ocean, were still going on normally, though human activity and interaction had ceased. I have continued to do this since Covid because a walk, a swim and a coffee at Flynns Beach is the best and only way for me to start a new day everyday.

What do you love most about being by the sea and the community that gathers at the beach?

The sea is full of life, energy and power but is also calming and therapeutic. The seashore connects and grounds you to the ocean, the rockpools are full of wonder,

and the dolphins and whales are pure joy. Flynns is buzzing with people at sunrise, walkers, swimmers, exercisers, yoga, surfers, photographers are all part of the regulars - a community in its own right. To have a chat, say G'day, or even a smile to the regulars is affirming and assuring. It's about the rhythm, the connection to each other and the beach through the shared experience of starting a new day in such a beautiful way.

When did you start collecting rubbish and lost items from the beach and what motivated you to start?

I used to, like many others, pick up and dispose of rubbish brought in by the sea or left by beachgoers, for the sake of marine life and the environment. Over the years the amount of rubbish has really increased, especially during holiday time.

How has that practice evolved into what you do now?

I started art lessons at Drawn to Art three

years ago. In discussions with my art teacher, Jane Whitfield about an artwork featuring 426 plastic pieces found in the stomach of a seabird, by Justin Gilligan (a wildlife photographer based in Lord Howe Island), we also got discussing my daily rubbish clean up. With Jane’s encouragement, I started to collect plastic, non-organic rubbish left in order to create some type of display which would be a meaningful statement about waste, pollution and the environment.

Meanwhile at art I have been creating oceanwater paintings as an adjunct to the theme of The Wall.

Can you tell us why you started The Wall and what your process is for putting it together?

The display has evolved into an art installation I call The Wall. The process starts with either collecting the rubbish or moving any items left on the sand like thongs, shoes, beach toys, hats up to the grass for the owners to retrieve. If they are still there a week later I

will take them home and hang/install them on The Wall which has sections like the Flipper Fence from when I retrieved a 2 metre long cyclone fence which had been washed up and left at the beach for 6 weeks! There is a Spade Mobile section too.

When people see The Wall at my place, they are shocked and amazed. It is such a visual reminder of the impact of waste pollution in our environment.

As well, many of the other regulars also move items out of the way of the tide. I still dispose of rubbish as well as collect plastics. How big is the wall currently and how long do you think you will continue creating this piece?

The Wall is 8 metres long and 2 metres high. It will stop at 10 metres. After that, I will return to disposal of the waste but continue the process by taking The

into the public domain.

What message do you hope this project conveys to our community about discarded items and rubbish landing on our beaches? How can we join you in trying to keep our rubbish out of the ocean?

When people see The Wall at my place, they are shocked and amazed. It is such a visual reminder of the impact of waste pollution in our environment. The rubbish comes from the Hastings River, and the ocean; from beach goers accidentally dropping and leaving things; and from people deliberately littering, like leaving cans or even massive fireworks on the sand.

All of us should be mindful about our rubbish - from the fishermen who lose lures, hooks and plastic bait bags to the beach goer who leaves a broken beach toy or plastic soy sauce fish container.

As the saying goes “take 3 for the sea”

Do you have any future plans for your wall project or raising awareness about pollution?

Yes, I hope to take The Wall to the next level of a public community art installation where it will serve as a visual reminder of us caring about, and looking after our environment. Thanks Anne.

GET AUSTRALIA BACK ON

MY PLAN TO GET AUSTRALIA BACK ON andCowper

Australia’s inflation rate under Labor is higher than any major advanced economy in the world. I support cutting wasteful spending, reducing red and green tape and returning to the Coalition’s responsible economic management. Labor’s cost-of-living crisis is causing so much pain for locals.

While the latest 0.25% interest rate cut is a welcome relief, we have seen 12 interest rate rises under Labor. Only by controlling government spending and reducing energy prices will we see home and small business mortgage rates come down. Labor’s poor policies have kept mortgage rates high.

Hearing directly from our community on the issues that affect them most

We will unlock up to 500,000 new homes by funding essential infrastructure like water, power and sewerage at housing development sites.

My plan supports first home buyers by letting them use part of their super for a deposit. We need to reduce migration – over the past two years there have been nearly four new arrivals for every new home built. I support a two year ban on foreign investors and temporary residents buying Australian homes.

Labor promised a $275 reduction in energy bills but our power and gas costs have kept increasing. Today, Australians pay some of the highest power prices in the world. I support a sensible, low-cost energy plan that includes more Australian gas and, in seven locations, retired coal plants will be replaced with zero-emissions nuclear energy.

I support stronger defence and border security that includes deporting non-citizens who commit violence crimes. I will work with the state government to implement tougher knife laws and tighter bail laws. And I’ll support online safety programs for our children.

Labor’s neglected our regions for years. I will fight for better broadband and will work to bring back the Coalition’s Building Better Regions Fund that delivered for our local communities. I support the Black Spot Road Safety program as there are still too many accidents on our country roads.

As well as cost of living relief, my plan includes ensuring families will have real choice when it comes to education, childcare and access to local community services. There is simply too much pressure on local families.

I know how critical small businesses are in our local communities – whether they’re farmers or those that supply our goods and services. I support the instant asset write off and creating a strong economy so all business owners have the confidence to plan for the future and employ more local residents.

We need better local health care closer to home as it’s become so hard under Labor to find doctors’ appointments, especially appointments which are bulk-billed. I strongly support the Coalition’s $400 million plan to boost the number of graduate doctors going into general practice. I also support reinstating the number of Medicare-subsidised mental health sessions from 10 to 20 after Labor cut these in 2022 for over 240,000 Australians.

I secured $6.8m so the ground-breaking Dementia Care Village ‘Emmaus’ could be delivered in Port Macquarie.

CAMERON-BROWN

Ali Cameron-Brown is the Deputy Commander-Operations at Marine Rescue Port Macquarie. Marine Rescue is so vital to our community and is a registered charity run entirely by volunteers. We spoke to Ali about what they do, what it takes to keep things running and how we can best support them. MARINE RESCUE PORT MACQUARIE

Many people in the community may not fully understand the role of Marine Rescue Port Macquarie. Can you clarify what your team does and how you operate?

Marine Rescue Port Macquarie has the primary objective of saving lives at sea. We do however also get involved with supporting other emergency agencies, volunteer groups and assisting with community based events. Our unit is made up of three groups, boat crew, radio operators and fundraising, and all our members take part in one or more of these groups.

As a registered charity run entirely by volunteers, what does it take to keep the organisation running smoothly?

The unit is made up of over 210 dedicated volunteers giving up an amazing amount of their time to make the organisation function smoothly. There is always a team on call ready to respond to a callout on the vessels 24/7 every day of the year. The radio

base is manned continuously by at least one operator and more during busy periods. They are listening for routine radio calls as well as responding to calls for assistance. Port Macquarie is a radio hub and looks after the northern third of NSW in the evenings and overnight. This is an immensely important role as it is the vital thread that connects anyone at sea with the land when things go wrong and the calm voice reassuring those in distress that help is on its way. All this is possible because of the dedicated fundraising team working to ensure that we can continue to perform these functions and train frequently.

How do you work alongside other organisations, such as National Parks or law enforcement agencies, when incidents occur on the water?

Our role extends to working with a range of other organisations such as SES during natural disasters such as floods, National Parks during whale entanglements and aquatic wildlife issues, RFS during bushfire emergencies, Surf Lifesaving and Police for a wide range of situations.

We have the largest number of SOG (State

Operations Group) operatives in the state. This is an additionally trained group who are able to respond to flood emergencies alongside the SES wherever required in NSW and commit to being deployed for a week at a time.

In order to ensure cohesive working with these external agencies we take part in joint training exercises throughout the year.

What types of rescues or emergency situations does your team typically respond to?

Our callouts are very varied ranging from life threatening injuries, vessels on fire to taking on water and sinking but some such as flat batteries and fuel problems are the most common. We also perform searches for missing vessels or individuals swept from our beaches. All our crew are trained in First Aid and resuscitation to be able to assist casualties with serious injuries and health issues and get them to further medical help swiftly.

If someone is in distress on the water, what should they do to get help from Marine Rescue?

Anyone finding themselves in difficulty can call Marine Rescue on VHF channel 16, 27MHz

channel 88 or by calling on the phone when within range on 02 5547 9100 or 000. With boating and water activities becoming more popular, what safety advice would you give to local boaters and water users?

We recommend that boaters log on with Marine Rescue either by radio or on the Marine Rescue App before crossing the bar. Boaters can also join our radio club at the Town Beach radio base. When things take a bad turn it helps enormously if we have an idea where you are and some basic information about your vessel. If you fail to return when expected a chain of actions will start that might just save your life. While we very much appreciate donations we provide this service free of charge. It’s all about saving lives and bringing people back to shore and their loved ones. Other advice includes maintaining your vessels and making sure you are well equipped with all the required safety gear that is up to date and in good condition including your life jackets. Don’t forget that the fuel in the tanks can deteriorate over time. A few simple checks can save lives.

How can the community support Marine Rescue Port Macquarie, whether through volunteering, fundraising, or other means?

Our common theme is a passion for working together towards a common goal, Saving lives at sea! We train to very high standards to achieve this goal which requires funding all year round.

Marine Rescue Port Macquarie is run by members of this community for the wider community. We support fellow volunteer organisations and others by providing safety vessels for their events as well as in many other ways. We are always happy to welcome new members to our family and have options for young and old with a wide range of experiences. Our common theme is a passion for working together towards a common goal, saving lives at sea! We train to very high standards to achieve this goal which requires funding all year round.

What kind of training do volunteers go through to be part of the team, and what

skills are essential for the role?

We provide all the training required for all the roles within the organisation. Our radio operators take upwards of 6 months (depending on availability) to achieve the required standard of proficiency for their important role. During this time all trainees are mentored and encouraged by experienced members which allows for tailored training. We only ask for a willingness to learn and some basic computer skills. Once qualified there are further avenues for those who are keen for more knowledge. Our boat crew take 4-6 months to master the skills and knowledge required, and again all the training is provided within the unit. This includes sea survival and fight fires, basic marine radio licence, first aid and resus and a variety of deck skills. This role does require a level of flexibility, strength

and fitness appropriate to working on deck. Crew then have additional options for further training to become RWCO (jet ski operators), lead crew and skippers. Our fundraisers require a sense of humour and ability to work in a team environment! We have a dedicated team in our food van which is a major contributor to our fundraising efforts, feeding the community quality produce and keeping the unit running.

Do you have any upcoming initiatives, fundraising events, or projects the community should know about?

We have just had our annual golf day which was a huge success. Many thanks to all the local business’ who supported this event, sponsoring raffle and auction prizes and the weather for playing nice.

So if you see us out there selling raffle tickets come and chat to our fundraisers and buy some tickets, or pick up a leaflet to see what volunteering role might suit you.

Thanks Ali.

Search  up

Back in the day the ways were few. You know, to find out stuff in general. Whilst attempting to explain the concept of having to wait for a trip to the library to look up something you wanted to know to the smaller people sharing the household recently, it brought back those long-disappeared days.

How unbelievable is it to think that in many of our lifetimes there was a significant chunk where instant gratification wasn’t even a thing. Getting pretty much anything done involved a process and questions more often than not weren’t able to be answered right there and then.

If you need to know something, well, you mostly just had to wait to find out the answer. Unbelievable and downright inconceivable to those Gen Zs and Gen Alphas – ‘what do you mean, you couldn’t just search it up?’

And don’t even go there with the absolute implausibility of the concept of having to rely on your passenger to navigate with a street directory turned upside down, or even better with you, yourself attempting to do it whilst you’re driving…..nope there were no Google Maps, not even Apple maps or Waze…if there was a cop around the corner well you found out

when you arrived there….

So life is a little different now and we can arm ourselves with all the information and then some. Any burning question can be instantly ‘searched up’, if you really want to plumb the depths on any particular subject, there’s an app or 20 to install, a site to subscribe to, 700 YouTube videos to peruse and 300 chat rooms to air your concerns with a multitude of sympathetic strangers.

These days, it is no longer a question of finding an answer, but really it’s about how deeply you want to immerse yourself on any given topic. In fact, it can be kind of hard to stop, so much so that you go so far off track you don’t even remember what you were looking up in the first place!

That’s another story all together though, but as usual, I’m wanting to tie this in to how this affects your choice in which restaurant you might choose to go to and why…

In many ways it is actually quite empowering to be able to do our research or ‘due diligence’ when it comes to making a booking at a dining establishment.

You can assemble all the facts with relative ease – the menu can be loaded up in an instant, you

can jump online and look at photos of the room and the location. Social media provides you with the vibe and then of course the multitude of reviews from so many sources nowadays.

As an autonomous human, complete with your own likes and dislikes, you can then make an informed decision based on the particular parts of the proposition that either appeal to you or put you off, and voila – with reasonable confidence you can have a pretty good crack at making the right choice.

I mean, there’s less margin for error, right? Perhaps we aren’t as spontaneous because of it but no needing to dutifully scan the papers hopefully for a restaurant review or wait for some annual guide to come out – (‘Annual’!)

Gen Alpha can’t even….

At the end of the day, you can still most definitely get it wrong. There’s a lot of smoke and mirrors out there but on the plus side of a few years into the digital age – most of us are getting a lot savvier when it comes to processing the multitude of information we are exposed to – filtering out what we don’t need and using the technology for the most part of tailoring our experience to our individual requirements. Happy Dining! (Now stop scrolling).

Matt and Kell, it’s been a while since we caught up and chatted about all things Chow Haus. Your street kitchen is back and has a new home at Camp Jordans. Tell us what brought you back to a new location and restarting the Chow Haus Street Kitchen?

It was all very spontaneous to reopen actually! We were asked to come and do a pop up in the food truck at Camp Jordans as the cafe onsite had been closed for a few months. After that was done the owner approached us and asked if we would like to take over the premises. At first we declined, but we decided to go and have a better look. Ma and Kelly, two Port Macquarie locals have been operating Chow Haus Street Kitchen for the past 6 years from the O.G. Chow Haus in Horton Street to their fully customised food truck. Now at the new pictureque location at Camp Jordan Port Macquarie, we catch up with them to talk about their new menu and location.

coming back to life, so we jumped on board.

Can you tell us what you have been doing since closing the restaurant in the CBD of Port Macquarie and opening at Camp Jordans?

We were operating our Chow Haus food truck after we closed the restaurant, doing pop ups, festivals and event catering. It was really a great experience being able to pretty much go anywhere and do our thing. I was also working with XS-Foods catering for NSW RFS whenever there was a natural disaster. Kell went into retail selling jewellery utilising her natural born sales skills.

Tell us about the changes you have made to your menu?

We have toned down our menu a little to suit the DA restrictions in place. We are

only permitted to use disposable packaging, so we have tried to make most things edible with your hands so as not to require much cutlery. Our biggest change probably, is that all our fried foods are coeliac friendly and our fryers are completely gluten free.

Chow Haus now offers breakfast. Tell us about how this has been going and what the customers are loving on the menu for brekkie.

Breakfast has been going great, the weekends are really turning it on. We have had to alter a few things into our street style of food so it can be eaten with your hands. Our brekkie tacos and Eggs Benny roll are easily the 2 most popular brekkie items on the menu.

Why do you think your brand and food items are so popular with the locals and visitors alike?

We believe our food is so popular due to the freshness and creativity that goes into it, we strive to make everything we can in house. We mince our own beef to make our burgers, make our own kimchi, pickles, sauces, smoke all our meats on site. We like simplicity and working with bold flavour combinations. What excites you the most about your new location?

We definitely have found a little piece of paradise on the quiet side of town. The vibe is so different to what we created in the CBD, a much more chilled out and relaxing atmosphere, a place that everyone can relax, the kids can go swimming in the private beach, wet a line off the wharf while parents can catch up with friends. We are also planning some upgrades of the current outdoor area to make it more weather friendly all year round.

Thanks Guys.

HOTELS Sponsorship FLOWER

SET TO SOAR IN 2025

Flower Hotels has been proudly serving the Mid North Coast since 2017. Focus caught up with proprietor Alistair Flower to discuss his community-driven approach to business and the exciting sponsorship plans for the year ahead.

Hi Alistair. You’re well known for your commitment to the community, with Flower Hotels investing significant sponsorship funds into local groups and sporting organisations. Why is this such an important part of your business? As custodians of our pubs, we see them as the heartbeat of their communities. Our purpose is to connect people, and these local clubs and organisations are the fabric of our towns. Supporting them is something we’re passionate about - it’s a natural, hand-in-glove relationship.

Flower Hotels has supported numerous local sporting clubs over the years. Can you share some highlights where your sponsorship has helped teams achieve success? We’re proud to sponsor over 45 local clubs, and one of the most rewarding aspects is helping teams rebuild and thrive. The Lake Cathie

Raiders are a great example. After a hiatus of a few years, they’ve made a strong comeback and now have a true home within our pub. The Lake Cathie Netball Club is another fantastic new club that has flourished, thanks to a strong and supportive local community.

We also love our involvement with the Hastings League, which continues to grow. This year, the rugby league competition has expanded to 11 clubs, which is a great outcome for the region. 2025 is shaping up to be a big year for sponsorship. How does your backing benefit not just the clubs and their members, but the wider community as well? I strongly believe that being part of a community club has enormous benefits for both physical and mental well-being. The COVID years really reinforced how vital community connection is, and local clubs, along with the local pub are at the heart of that.

The best way to lift people up is through the power of community, and if our financial contribution helps increase participation and strengthen these clubs on and off the field, then everyone wins. Of course, none of this would be possible without the incredible volunteers who work tirelessly behind the scenes. Their dedication is what truly drives success for these clubs and, ultimately, makes our communities stronger.

Flower Hotels is always looking for new ways to engage and support local groups. For those seeking sponsorship, what’s the best way to get in touch?

I’m always happy to chat—whether it’s through social media, in person at one of the pubs, or via email info@flowerhotels.com.au. I’ll always do my best to support a club’s success and help strengthen the local sporting scene.

Apples

...tell me what you know about apples, simple, right?

Crunchy, tasty, grown all year round as a healthy ready to eat snack... Almost right, but not quite...

Did you know that each variety of apple is only picked for about two weeks of the year?

Well, that's right, and the rest of the year they either come out of what is called controlled storage (basically a big cool room with controlled temperature, humidity and atmosphere) or imported from another country's two week picking season. Now this takes nothing away from the apple as a delicious healthy snack but it does help to explain the different prices we see at the shop front and it goes a long way to explaining why your apple was ok last week and AMAZING this week.

Apple season starts in Australia with Royal Gala apples kicking off the new season in February with its traditional flavour and texture, some would say the OG Snow White apple. Others would argue the Red Delicious picked around the same time must have been the Snow White apple with its deep red skin and seductive flavour. Then we move on to the many and varied varieties like Golden Delicious with as the name describes its gold skin yet softer texture and Fuji, a similar softer texture apple but a step back towards that familiar red skin. By March we can expect to see Jazz and Kanzi apples in abundance, did you know that the Jazz and Kanzi are actually the result of cross-breeding of the same varieties? Both are the result of cross-breeding the Royal Gala and Braeburn apple. Kanzi's

were grown by a German farmer while the Jazz was bred a little closer to home, just across the ditch in New Zealand. But don't worry our Australian fruit boffins have been at it as well with a new variety released from Batlow the unofficial apple capital of Australia. We have the Cosmic Crisp, this apple I have to say exceeded my expectations for both sweetness and crispness. It has amazing dark red skin with a true rainbow of sweet, sweet, flavour and a crunch that would match any other. I didn't think it would happen but it might just take the crown from the Pink Lady in the next few years.

Speaking of the well known and loved Pink Lady, she's the country's favourite apple. As its popularity with consumers has soared over the past years it has seen a massive shift in the industry with farms removing older style apples like the Jonathan apple entirely to be replaced with Pink Ladies only. As a result, some of the varieties we grew up with are simply not being grown anymore. Pink Ladies are the only apple variety whose flavour will not peak until two weeks AFTER being picked. So all other varieties are best eaten straight from the tree, not a Pink Lady, she uses this time to bring all the sugar and flavour to its maturity and absolute peak. So while Pink Ladies are the last to hit the shop... she'll be worth the wait! The crisp texture, the sweet flavour, it just can't be mistaken.

And of course the Granny Smith, not our only green apple but probably the only green

What’s in

Season

apple you'll find in shops today. An incredibly versatile apple, from juicing to baking the Grannies have you covered. I guess you could just plant a couple at home, but with an average three to six year wait for fruit I'd probably leave it to the professionals but if you do get a bumper crop going don't forget we still buy fresh produce at Growers Market as well as sell it.

You might also get a surprise to see what an apple tree looks like, with modern farming practices refined to a true art to produce only the best crops with perfect size and shape as the consumer demands. Modern farms are laid out in very orderly lines with frames and wire runs to support the weight of the fruit as it matures. Some could be mistaken for a wine vineyard with all the trees pruned perfectly to allow even sunlight across the crop to further refine the crop to a constant best.

Out of all the new season fruit we see all year round, I have to say I look forward to apples the most. People say, oh what about the mangoes?!? Well, we are lucky enough to have an eight to nine-month mango season here in Australia but the humble apple is only truly fresh picked for about four to six weeks of the year and if you time it just right you simply won't find any better fruit. Of course, apples are still delicious and still healthy all year round but if you want to taste the best... Get into your local greengrocer NOW and ask what is the new season, you won't be disappointed.

ROBBIE AGNEW

G’day Robbie, tell us a little bit about yourself. Where did you grow up, and what led you to Port Macquarie?

I’m originally from Sydney and grew up in the eastern suburbs. Racing runs in the family, my Granddad was a jockey, my Dad was a jockey, so it was only natural that I followed in their footsteps. A rugby career was never on the cards! I started my apprenticeship in Ballina, but when the opportunity came up to finish it in Port Macquarie, I jumped at the chance. Being closer to friends and family in Sydney was a big drawcard. That was back in 2007, and I’ve called Port home ever since.

Port has a way of keeping people here! You’ve made the jump (pun intended!) from jockey to trainer these days. What does that look like for you?

That’s right! These days, I run Robbie Agnew Racing out of the Port Macquarie Race Club, and we have about 15 horses in training at the moment. Most of our clients are family,

friends, and locals, but after some early success, plenty of new owners are jumping on board. We buy two or three new yearlings each year, so there are always fresh opportunities for people to get involved.

It’s an exciting time for racing in Port Macquarie. Racing NSW has invested millions into the track, the Port Macquarie Cup is going from strength to strength, and the Country Championships were a massive success. The whole racing community here is thriving, and it’s great to be a part of it.

Got any hot tips for us?

A couple of my best horses are currently in the paddock, but once they come back from a spell, they’ll be heading to Sydney to race. Keep an eye out for Show Em Howl and Pony Soprano - they’re two of my top prospects. Another one to watch is Mia Figlia. She’s been

showing plenty of promise on the track, and once she puts it all together on race day, she’ll be a serious contender.

Many people know you from off the track too. What other areas of the community do you take part in?

THE WHOLE RACING COMMUNITY HERE IS THRIVING, AND IT’S GREAT TO BE A PART OF IT.

We love giving back to the community, so Robbie Agnew Racing proudly sponsors the Macquarie Cricket Club, Port Macquarie Oztag and the Port City Breakers. This year is extra special for my wife, Alana and I because our son, Joey, is starting his first season with the Breakers Under 6s. We’ve always supported the club, but watching Joey run out onto the field will be a proud moment.

I’m also still playing in the local oztag competition, I might be nearing retirement age, but I’m not hanging up the boots just yet! Settlers Inn is your local. What’s the best thing on the menu?

Easy! A schooner of ice-cold Carlton Dry 3.5, and if I had to pick a meal, you can’t go past a rare steak with chips only. Simple, classic, and always spot on.

Thanks Robbie.

MANAGING DIRECTOR OF FLOWER HOTELS

Katwin Gibson is a passionate foodie who started moodfoodbykat with the simple ethos of being the change she wanted to see in the world. Katwin offers ready made meals, cooking lessons and does regular cooking demonstrations at the Real Food Markets each month.

Katwin Gibson

Hi Katwin. Food is clearly your love language. Can you tell us how moodfoodbykat came to life and what inspired you to start this journey? moodfoodbykat is me being the change I want to see in the world. This business is an intersection of three powerful drivers in my life - a lifelong passion for making delicious food that is deeply nourishing; supporting others to be their healthiest, happiest selves and demonstrating how to live in a way that better safeguards the health of our beautiful planet Earth.

Your food philosophy is deeply connected to both joy and mindful climate activism. How do you balance creating delicious meals with sustainability?

I have learned that what is good for me is also good for the planet. Experiencing joy and owning my responsibility as a privileged human being are deeply connected. For me, it’s the simple, most essential things in life that bring me joy. I want to connect other people with that meaningful experience. Sharing a beautiful and nourishing meal that has been made with love and care is one of the most universal joyful experiences I can think of. It’s definitely the first impulse I have whenever I want to celebrate life with my family and friends!

Sharing a beautiful and nourishing meal that has been made with love and care is one of the most universal joyful experiences I can think of.

today. The impact of agricultural methods and our current global food system on climate change, habitat and biodiversity loss, as well as on human health, is an incredibly complex issue. The business model I’m applying to moodfoodbykat is the simplest antidote to that complexity and responsibility I can come up with – offering a wholefood alternative to processed convenience foods; using local organically farmed ingredients; “farmer first” menu planning and small scale production oriented towards a closed loop principle. You offer readymade meals to the community. Can you walk us through the process of curating your meal offerings? Do you have a signature dish or customer favourite?

Eating in a way that is sustainable is one of the most urgent responsibilities of being a human

My first step is to check out what ingredient items my suppliers have in abundance. I might do this using their online stores, but it’s more fun to visit them at The Real Food Market! I’ll see a pile of irresistibly gorgeous eggplants and be inspired to build a dish from those, or the equally divine bullhorn capsicum, freshly picked corn or Russian cucumbers! The creative juices kick in and I’ll come up with a gourmet celebration. Then I apply my experimental experience in developing a recipe that is wholefood (no processed ingredients) and free of gluten, sugar and industrial seed oils.

I don’t have a signature dish but I definitely have a signature styleslow cooking with lots of layered flavours and textures built with the best quality ingredients I can find, in generous servings!

Learn how to make a delicious meal and you will make yourself feel happier. Sharing it with someone else will double the happiness!

In addition to providing readymade meals, you also teach cooking lessons. What can people expect from your classes, and who are they best suited for?

Teaching people how to make their own food is thrilling to me! The deep satisfaction of being able to make something for yourself, or to share that is yummy and good for you, is such a great feeling! Learning to cook is an experience for everyone. I try to meet people where they’re at regardless of age, cooking experience, food preferences or budget. I have worked with skilled home cooks who needed an enthusiasm reboot after years of feeding their family, with Nature School kids making jam and damper over an open fire and with people learning skills to live independently or improve their health. You do cooking demonstrations at the Real Food Markets in Port Macquarie. What do you love most about engaging with the community in this way?

I love every little bit of it! The creative challenge, advocating for local organic and regenerative farmers, connecting my community with the delights of the freshest,

most delicious food available in the region and sharing quick, easy, affordable ways to make something yummy and healthy to eat. I get to chat with people I would never meet otherwise and am constantly inspired by the incredible people who share their stories with me!

vegetables, meat, some dairy and some bulk

goods like rice, nuts and seeds. Then there are the items that won’t affordably fit into that criteria which I still get from supermarkets, like tofu, tempeh and tinned tomatoes! What are some simple changes people can make in their everyday cooking to be more sustainable and mindful of the environment?

What are some key messages or skills you hope people take away from your cooking demonstrations?

Simple dishes are delicious when made with high quality ingredients – cooking yummy food that is healthy for you can be quick and easy.

Having the basic know-how and skills to feed ourselves well, gives us so much agency to improve our health and sense of wellbeing without costing heaps of money, requiring special equipment or even needing a recipe! Learn how to make a delicious meal and you will make yourself feel happier. Sharing it with someone else will double the happiness! Sourcing sustainable ingredients is clearly important to you. How do you select the produce and products you use in your meals?

I start as close to home as possible and work outwards. First I use what’s in my garden, then I shop from local farmers, then I buy from non-supermarket retailers who stock Australian grown (preferably organic)

These simple steps are good for our health as well as good for our environment. Limit buying processed food as much as possible for your circumstances; avoid buying fruit and vegetables from supermarkets; if and when you can afford to, buy local and/or organically grown food; check the country of origin when buying ingredients – try to buy Australian grown and made; grow whatever you can at home, even if it’s one herb or pollinator friendly plant in a pot; learn as much as you can about your food system –there are heaps of books, documentaries, movies, podcasts and social media sites available to grow your awareness of what you can do to contribute to positive change.

For those looking to experience your meals, lessons, or demonstrations, where can they find you and how can they get involved?

Connect with me at The Real Food Markets on the last Tuesday of each month in the Glasshouse forecourt, or contact me via email or phone – katwin@protonmail.com Mobile 0421 161 153.

Thanks Katwin.

TAKING IT BACK TO THE BEGINNING

Istarted Port Medical Aesthetics Clinic (PMAC) because I saw a need for a clinic that combined evidence-based medicine with aesthetics in an honest, ethical, and patient-centered way. My background in general practice, women’s health, and regenerative aesthetics shaped my vision for a space where people could feel heard, respected, and empowered in their skin health journey.

Over the last decade, PMAC has grown from a single-room practice into a multi-disciplinary clinic with a great team of doctors, nurses, and dermal clinicians. In 2024, we were honoured to be named Business of the Year and Employer of Choice for NSW, a testament to the hard work, integrity, and expertise that defines us.

Lessons Learned Over the Years

One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned is that medicine and aesthetics should never be separated. Everything we do at PMAC is backed by science, ensuring our patients get the safest and most effective treatments. I’ve also learned the importance of leading with authenticity. In business, people see through anything that isn’t genuine, so staying true to your values is key.

PMAC’s Core Values

• Integrity – Ethical practice always comes first.

• Education – We invest in learning for our team and patients.

• Excellence – Every treatment is personalised and precise.

• Empowerment – Our goal is to help people feel their best.

• Authenticity – We lead with honesty and transparency.

Strengths – Business & Personal Perspective

From a business standpoint, my strength is in building a strong, values-driven team. Surrounding myself with the right people has been a game changer. Personally, I’m disciplined. Medicine, business, and life throw challenges, but success isn’t about motivation alone, it’s about consistent, focused effort.

Advice for Women in a Fast-Paced World Women tend to wear multiple hats, so it’s essential to set boundaries and prioritise yourself. One powerful lesson is learning when to quit something. Society glorifies perseverance, but staying committed to a bad investmentwhether it’s a business, an idea, or a relationship, can be damaging. Quitting isn’t weak - it’s strategic.

Secrets to Success & Overcoming Challenges

Success isn’t a secret - it’s a combination of hard work, passion, and persistence. I’ve

always believed in staying ahead of the curve and putting patients first. When times were tough, whether managing setbacks, regulatory changes, or a global pandemic, I stayed focused on providing ethical, high-quality care. What Sets PMAC Apart?

PMAC isn’t just another aesthetics clinic— we’re a medically-led, patient-first practice. Our approach is:

• Holistic & Personalised – We focus on longterm skin health, not quick fixes.

• Highly Qualified Team – Our team is made up of experts in their fields.

• Ethical & Transparent – We only offer treatments that are safe, evidence-based, and in the patient’s best interest.

• Cutting-Edge Innovation – We stay at the forefront of regenerative aesthetics. What sets us apart is our passion for helping people feel confident and empowered in their own skin, with integrity, science, and heart.

Dr. Claudia is a GP who divides her time between PMAC and The Health Centre, focusing on women's health. She began working at PMAC in 2019, initially assisting Dr. Kristy after hours. As an Aesthetic Physician, Dr. Claudia’s role involves assessing patients' needs and performing injectable treatments. She works 2-3 days a week and recently started offering Saturday clinics. Outside of work, Dr. Claudia is passionate about martial arts, particularly Karate, where she holds a Second Degree Black Belt, and enjoys Muay Thai. She loves being outdoors, walking on the beach with her dogs, and spending time with her husband, two young adult kids, two border collies, and a bunny rabbit.

Dr. Claudia describes herself as the Yin to Dr. Kristy’s Yang, with her more reserved energy balancing Dr. Kristy’s go-go-go attitude. While not the best at business, Dr. Claudia is known for her strength, both physically and in supporting her team. She has a unique ability to come up with creative ideas, though she relies on others to help bring them to life. Her favorite treatment at PMAC is full-face rejuvenation using biostimulators, which creates natural, subtle results by enhancing overall skin quality and encouraging collagen production. Dr. Claudia enjoys helping patients feel confident without making dramatic changes to their features.

Dr. Manon works as one of the cosmetic doctors. She thrives in the supportive environment at PMAC, where Dr. Kristy’s strong emphasis on patient care and enhancing the overall experience aligns with her own professional values. Dr. Manon finds it extremely rewarding to be part of a team that prioritises delivering exceptional care and results for each and every patient.

One of Dr. Manon’s favourite treatments at PMAC is skin boosters. She loves how these treatments stimulate collagen production, intensely hydrate the skin, and restore volume and firmness. Seeing the remarkable results in her patients and the confidence they gain from improved skin health brings Dr. Manon immense satisfaction and joy in her work.

It provides fast results, making it a fantastic option for both new patients and those maintaining results from previous treatments. Emma finds it incredibly rewarding to see her clients’ confidence grow as their skin improves.

Naomi Cameron has been in the aesthetics industry for over 25 years, starting as a beauty therapist before transitioning into dermal therapies and medical aesthetics. Women’s Health

with

GRAYCE GERKE

FROM WOMEN’S HEALTH PHYSIO PHYSIO COLLECTIVE

While there is no cure, Women’s Health Physiotherapy plays a vital role in managing symptoms, reducing pain, and improving function for those living with endometriosis. What is Endometriosis? Endometriosis occurs when tissue similar to the uterine lining grows outside the uterus, leading to inflammation, scarring, and severe pain. These growths can develop on the ovaries, fallopian tubes, bowel, bladder, and even outside the pelvic cavity.

Common symptoms include:

• Pelvic pain, often worsening during menstruation

• Pain during or after intercourse

• Pain with bowel movements or urination

• Heavy or irregular menstrual bleeding

• Fatigue and digestive issues

Many women experience delayed diagnosis, with an average wait time of 6 to 10 years before receiving appropriate care. This highlights the importance of early intervention and symptom management.

How Women’s Health Physiotherapy Can Help

Women’s Health Physiotherapists are trained to help reduce pain, improve mobility, and enhance pelvic function in women with endometriosis. Here’s how:

ENDOMETRIOSIS AWARENESS MONTH

March is Endometriosis Awareness Month, a time to raise awareness of a condition that a ects 1 in 9 women and can significantly impact daily life.

1. Pelvic Pain Management. Endometriosis can cause tight, overactive pelvic floor muscles, leading to increased pain. Physiotherapists use:

Manual therapy – Hands-on techniques to relieve tension in the muscles surrounding the pelvis.

Relaxation techniques – Helps calm the nervous system and ease muscle tightness.

TENS machine therapy – Use of Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation (TENS) to block pain signals and reduce muscle spasms for daily pain management.

2. Improving Pelvic Floor Function. Many women with endometriosis have pelvic floor dysfunction, which can worsen pain. A physiotherapist will assess whether the muscles are too tight, weak, or overactive and provide:

• Pelvic floor relaxation or strengthening exercises to restore normal muscle function.

• Bladder and bowel retraining to improve control and reduce urgency or discomfort.

• Strategies for pain-free intercourse, including muscle relaxation and breathing techniques.

3. Breathing & Posture Correction. Chronic pain often leads to poor posture and shallow breathing, increasing tension in the body.

Physiotherapists help by:

• Correcting posture & core stability to reduce strain on the pelvis.

• Teaching diaphragmatic breathing to promote relaxation and help regulate pain signals.

4. Exercise Therapy for Endometriosis.

Movement is key to reducing inflammation, improving circulation, and maintaining mobility. However, intense workouts can sometimes trigger pain, so a tailored exercise plan is important. Physiotherapists recommend:

• Low-impact cardio (e.g., walking, swimming) to improve circulation and reduce stiffness.

• Gentle stretching and yoga to release tension in tight muscles.

• Strengthening exercises to support the pelvic and core muscles.

5. Education & Self-Management Strategies. Understanding endometriosis empowers women to manage symptoms more effectively. Women’s Health Physiotherapists provide:

• Pain management strategies (heat therapy, positioning, pacing activities).

• Guidance on when to rest vs. exercise, helping women find a balance.

• Support for emotional well-being, addressing the mental load of chronic pain.

Endometriosis is more than just period pain - it’s a complex condition requiring a multidisciplinary approach. Women’s Health Physiotherapy offers effective, non-invasive strategies to help women manage pain, improve function, and reclaim their quality of life.

If you or someone you know is struggling with endometriosis, don’t suffer in silence. Call us today 5505 4994 or head to our website www.physiocollectivemnc.com.au to make an appointment to get you on the right track.

ARE YOU STRUGGLING with HIP PAIN?

Do you have hip pain that gets worse when you stand up, walk, or lie on your side? If so, you might be dealing with hip bursitis, a common condition that affects many people, especially women over 50 (sorry, ladies). This type of pain is usually felt on the outer side of the hip and can make daily activities difficult.

How Hip Bursitis Affects You

If you have hip bursitis, simple movements like getting up from a chair, walking, or standing for long periods may be painful. Even sleeping on the affected side can be uncomfortable. Many patients I first meet feel frustrated or worried, especially if treatments like cortisone injections and exercises have only provided

temporary relief. Some even fear they might need surgery after hearing what sounds like concerning MRI or ultrasound results.

What Causes Hip Bursitis?

Hip bursitis occurs when the small, fluid-filled sacs (bursae) that cushion the hip joint become inflamed due to muscle imbalances, tightness or direct impact to the hip. This inflammation can lead to persistent pain, stiffness, and limited mobility.

There’s Hope for Recovery

The good news? While hip bursitis can be

stubborn, it often responds well to the right treatment approach. By not only targeting the inflamed bursae but also addressing underlying muscle imbalances and hip tension, we can help patients restore their mobility, reduce pain, and begin regaining their quality of life.

If you’re struggling with hip bursitis or any of these symptoms, reach out today to learn how we can help!

WELCOME TO THE MONTH OF MARCH

The focus for this month is MANAGING STRESS AND ANXIETY.

I am a Registered Counsellor & Certified Mindful CBT Therapist, Mindfulness & Meditation Facilitator, Intuitive Guide & Sound Energy Healer. Sessions are available online via Zoom as well as face to face sessions.

12 WAYS TO MANAGE STRESS & ANXIETY

• Have a daily plan and set reasonable and achievable goals.

• Prioritise taking short breaks in the day.

• Have a daily mindfulness practice.

• Have a daily practice meditation – maybe start with two 5-minute meditations a day, following your breath or listening to a guided meditation.

I have over 260 meditations and short chats on my YouTube channel, a free resource, available 24/7.

youtube.com/@bernie888100/videos

• Take 1 minute to pause. Inhale a little deeper and exhale a little longer.

• Take 5 minute breaks: Hydrate. Go outside and notice the breeze upon your face.

• Take a short walk. Wash your hands with cold water.

• Schedule in daily exercise – even 15 minutes of gentle movement or a short walk.

• Eat well & prioritise getting enough sleep.

• Choose positive connections.

• Choose positive self-talk.

• Practice daily gratitude.

• Create and maintain healthy positive boundaries and be OK with saying NO, if that feels right for you if stressed or anxious.

10 BENEFITS OF MINDFULNESS WHEN FEELING STRESSED OR ANXIOUS.

• Lessen feelings of overwhelm.

• Lessen the impact of stress and anxiety.

• Be less reactive and more responsive to life.

• Be able to better regulate your emotions and improved mood.

• Less fatigue.

• Ability to let go of negative thoughts.

• Increased ability to concentrate and focus.

• Improved self-esteem.

• Improved relationships.

• Improved general health and wellbeing.

A SHORT MINDFUL TOOL TO HELP RELIEVE STRESS AND ANXIETY.

Stress and anxiety can cause you to breathe faster and take more shallow breaths - try to slow your breathing down. As you inhale, count to 4 and as you exhale count to 6. Take yourself to a safe space where you won’t be distracted. As you inhale through your nostrils, breathe in a little more deeply counting to 4.

As you exhale through your mouth, lengthen and slow down your breath counting to 6. Repeat this pattern of breathing for 10 rounds. As you do this, feel your feet supported by the ground beneath you.Relax your shoulders, your jaw and your brow.

TAKE NOTE OF YOUR SENSES.

What can you see? For example; blue sky, green grass, a tree, a pet, the ocean or the clouds.

What can you touch? For example; feet in your shoes or on the ground. The palms of your hands.

What can you smell? For example; the scent of salty air, coffee, a flower, an orange. What can you hear? For example; bird song, the ocean waves, calming music, the hum of the aircon.

What can you taste? Eg; tea, juice, a piece of fruit, water.

Dental Anxiety?

You are not Alone.

Dental anxiety or dental phobias are extremely common. In fact 30% of adults avoid seeing the dentist because of anxiety and fear.

People with dental anxiety often put off routine care for years, or even decades. Even a low level of anxiety can cause someone to put off essential check-ups. Others opt to live with chronic treatable infections, pain, or even broken and unsightly teeth until the pain is more unbearable than the fear and, at last they are forced to visit the dentist.

This often means the problem that could have been diagnosed and treated easily requires much more complex treatment that costs the patient more.

Besides chronically infected teeth and gums which can affect your medical status, your ability to chew, digest and SMILE are other aspects of your life that can be seriously compromised without dental care. Without healthy teeth and gums, your speech, your ability to chew and swallow the food you love can be affected. An unsightly smile and bad breath can affect your self-confidence, and a lack of self-confidence can limit your

future.

How to overcome your dental anxiety:-

• Understand that modern dental techniques and technology have made most treatment (including injections), virtually pain-free.

• Find a dentist who communicates well with YOU, is patient, genuinely caring and makes you feel comfortable.

• Schedule a time when you’ll be relaxed, not before something important.

filling, then build up to a larger treatment.

• Bring along your own music and headphones.

• Ask your dentist about relaxation options such as “Happy Gas” (Nitrous Oxide).

DON’T LET DENTAL ANXIETY HOLD YOU BACK, GET ON TOP OF YOUR DENTAL HEALTH AND YOUR REASON TO SMILE.

• Let the clinician know you’re nervous ahead of time and allow longer time for your appointment.

• Bring along a friend for moral support and arrive early.

• Start small, with a check-up, or a small

• When you are done with your dental treatment, reward yourself - treat yourself to something special and ENJOY YOUR REWARDYOU’VE EARNED IT! Don't let dental anxiety hold you back, get on top of your dental health and your reason to SMILE.

4 steps to Choose a Residential Care Service

When the time comes for you or a parent to move into residential care, choosing the right service is an important but complex decision.

Sometimes your choice may be limited because of the urgency or the availability of suitable places, and the pressure can be overwhelming, but making the right choice is key to a good experience.

It might help to take an approach that is similar to the approach you would take if you were buying or renting any property, and break down your decisions into four steps:

1. Choose the location

2. Consider what feels like home and what amenities are important to access

3. Check the price for affordability

4. Structure your finances to meet the costs.

Choosing the location

When choosing where to live, location is always the first consideration. This might be based on the lifestyle you want to live, or what you want to be close to.

Do you want to stay in the same area where you have been living so you can continue with the same doctor, hairdresser, church group and friends. Or, would it be better to move closer to your children so visits can be more regular.

This can be different for everyone – but it is important to understand where you feel comfortable and what makes you happy.

Is this a newly-built service or does an older style service feel more homely? If you have always lived in a stand-alone home, would you be comfortable in a multistorey building?

If you loved to spend time in the garden, you might be happiest if you can find somewhere with access to good gardens and lots of open space.

As well as the physical look and feel, think about how it might feel to live there. Does it have a friendly and relaxed feel or does it all feel a bit clinical?

If you are taking a tour of a residential service watch how staff interact with the residents. Ask about additional lifestyle services and choices you might have for things like entertainment and meals.

Choose an affordable service

The price of a room in residential care can range up to $3 million. But the price of homes also varies greatly. The reality is that you need to find something in an affordable price range.

This does not mean you have to hand over large lump sums for aged care. You can choose to pay a daily fee to “rent” if that suits you better. This can help you to afford a more expensive room.

Structure your finances

Many people find a way to enter and pay for aged care, but they often don’t consider all the options available to them. It’s important to compare and contrast different financial arrangements to ensure you make the best decision for your situation. This also ensures that there are no unpleasant financial surprises popping up during your time in care (such as running out of funds).

If you are thinking about a move yourself, or have an older family member that needs care, call me on 0431 414 799 to discuss how I can help.

As an Accredited Aged Care ProfessionalTM, I can help you get started and remove some of the stress and worry from future care needs. This advice is general in nature and everyone’s circumstances are different. So it’s important to speak to someone like myself who is a licenced financial adviser (I am an Authorised Representative of Count Financial Limited AFSL 227232).

After 18 years in busy Sydney clinics, including owning Sydney Natural Fertility, I moved to Wauchope to bring allied reproductive care and healthcare access to the Port Macquarie interland. Setting up at The Wellness Collective was a strategic choice to encourage people to embrace a slower pace of life, with a connection to nature and community. My passion for healthcare, particularly Chinese Medicine’s holistic approach, has always been a driving force. I developed a special interest in infertility and pregnancy care early in my career and later earned a Master of Reproductive Medicine. I love being part of a family’s journey to parenthood and supporting healthy aging through preventative care for conditions like dementia and arthritis.

Maintaining balance is key, and I take every second day off to spend with my child and animals, as well as enjoy nature. This rejuvenates me and helps me show up vibrant and excited for my work. For others, I recommend finding small relaxing practices, like a calming night time routine.

My motivation comes from my patients.

Over 19 years of treating, I’ve never had a day where I didn’t feel excited to work. Helping others brings the greatest reward, and that’s what keeps me going.

EMMA SCHUCH KATHRYN SCHMIDT

How long have you owned/ worked there? I’ve owned Strive Finance for the past 9 years, and during that time, I’ve had the privilege of helping clients navigate their financial journeys. My focus has always been on offering personalised, practical solutions, and providing expert guidance so clients can make informed decisions about their financial futures. Strive Finance isn’t just about offering loans; it’s about building trust, providing clarity, and supporting clients every step of the way. It’s been incredibly fulfilling to see how much of a difference I’ve made in people’s lives, and I’m excited to continue helping clients achieve their financial goals.

What inspired you to start your business or pursue this career? In 2014, I found myself struggling to understand the complexities of interest rates and the home loan process, especially when dealing directly with lenders. There was so much information out there, but it wasn’t easy to get clear answers. I realised I wasn’t alone many people were in the same boat, trying to make decisions without fully understanding the process. That’s when I decided to dive deep into learning about how home loans worked and what interest rates really meant. As I gained more knowledge, I could see how much value there was in having someone to guide people through the process with practical, clear advice. That’s why I founded Strive Finance to help others understand and navigate the home loan journey with confidence.

I’m passionate about creating a supportive environment where my team feels empowered to excel, and I take pride in how we collaborate to deliver the best results for our clients.

How do you maintain a healthy work-life balance? As a mother and business owner, I’ve always prioritised finding a healthy worklife balance. My mornings begin early, offering

a few moments of quiet before the day ramps up. I truly appreciate the flexibility my career provides, especially in the mornings, allowing me to be present with my family. I kickstart my day with a run, which clears my mind and sets a positive tone for the hours ahead. Sundays often find me at Flynn’s Beach, where I’m involved in surf lifesaving - a wonderful way to stay active while giving back to my community. I also serve as an Age Manager for the Under 9s, teaching kids valuable life skills and building their confidence. Staying active and engaged with my community keeps me grounded, helping me stay focused both at work and in my personal life. One of the most rewarding aspects of my work is helping others grow, both professionally and personally. Sharing my knowledge with my expanding team, guiding them through challenges, and seeing them thrive in their roles brings me immense fulfillment. This year, I’m fortunate to be mentoring Kathryn Schmidt as she embarks on her journey as a new mortgage broker. I’m passionate about creating a supportive environment where my team feels empowered to excel, and I take pride in how we collaborate to deliver the best results for our clients. It’s not just about financial success; it’s about cultivating a positive, collaborative culture where everyone has the opportunity to flourish. To maintain productivity, especially during more challenging periods, I rely on setting clear goals - both personal and professional. I keep these goals visible, whether on a notepad or a board in my office, so I stay focused on what truly matters: supporting my clients and being present for my family. I’ve also learned the importance of taking regular breaks. A day or two off every few months allows me to recharge, ensuring I return with renewed

energy and the ability to perform at my best. What strategies do you use to stay motivated and productive, especially during tough times? To stay motivated and productive, I rely on a combination of strategies that focus on balance, relationships, and continual improvement. First and foremost, I prioritise building strong, meaningful relationships with my clients, which fosters trust and ensures I’m always striving to meet their needs. Additionally, supporting their overall well-being is central to my approach, as it reinforces the purpose behind the work I do.

Staying engaged with my community and maintaining a strong connection to my family also plays a critical role in keeping me grounded, especially during challenging times. These relationships provide both support and perspective, allowing me to stay focused and motivated, even when faced with obstacles. The recent nominations for the 2025 Better Business Awards—Best Financial Broker, Best Customer Service, and Wellness Advocate of the Year—serve as a powerful reminder of the importance of these strategies. Being recognised for the hard work and dedication I’ve put into building strong client relationships and prioritising well-being is incredibly motivating. It affirms that the effort I put into delivering excellence is truly making an impact. This recognition, coupled with my commitment to continuous growth, fuels my productivity and drives me to consistently achieve success, not only for my clients and business but also for my team and family.

How would you describe your leadership style, and how has it evolved over time?

My leadership style is a balance between empowerment, collaboration, and innovation. I believe in leading by example - fostering a supportive environment where my team feels valued, inspired, and motivated to grow both personally and professionally.

Over the years, my leadership has evolved from being very hands-on to trusting and delegating more effectively. As a mother of two young children and a wife to a husband running his own business, I’ve learned the importance of building a team that thrives on autonomy and shared vision.

One of the most transformative decisions we made was doing a full 360 rebrand and complete renovation of our business last year. Curating Bespoke Glow’s mind, body, and skin focus was one of the best things we did - not just for our clients, but for our team and myself. It allows us to operate from a place of balance, purpose, and genuine well-being, rather than constant hustle.

In today’s fast-paced world, how do you maintain a healthy work-life balance? For me, work-life balance is about alignment, not separation. As a business owner, a mother, and a wife to another entrepreneur, I know firsthand how easy it is to let work take over. But I’ve learned that true success comes from nurturing all aspects of life - family, career, and personal well-being. (Those monthly facials truly do assist)!

Curating Bespoke Glow with a mind, body, and skin focus was a game-changer for my team, my own well-being, and our community. It allowed us to lead by example, showing that success doesn’t have to come at the cost of health and balance. Through our team wellness bonding events, we make sure to regularly pause, reconnect, and refuel - not just as professionals, but as individuals who deserve care and restoration.

SEEN SUPPORT: EMPOWERING PEOPLE WITH DIGNITY AND CARE

Tayla Cervoni founded SEEN Support in 2021, driven by her experience caring for a gentleman with Lewy Body Dementia. Over the course of a year, she provided respite care in his home, helping him maintain dignity and comfort as his condition progressed. This inspired her to create SEEN Support, where she dedicates herself to ensuring every individual feels valued, important, and recognised for their unique qualities. She has established a healthy work life balance by having staff who are amazing and like minded! Having a good support team allows me to focus my time and energy efficiently between work and home life! Tayla’s motivation and productivity comes from the joy of seeing her participants achieve their goals, whether big or small. She

is particularly driven by helping people who may have previously felt disempowered regain their independence, find work, and experience the freedom to live with confidence. For Tayla, there’s nothing more fulfilling than watching others thrive. Working with vulnerable individuals has also reshaped her perspective on life, teaching her gratitude and resilience. Lauren Hawkes is the owner of Hawkes Conveyancing, a business that will celebrate its 10th anniversary later this year. It’s hard for her to believe how quickly the time has passed since she began her journey in the conveyancing industry.

TAYLA CERVONI

LAUREN HAWKES

Lauren's career began straight out of high school when she started working as an office junior in a law firm. It didn’t take long before she found herself in the conveyancing department, a field she quickly grew passionate about. However, starting her own business wasn’t something she initially envisioned. The idea to open Hawkes Conveyancing only came after she moved from Sydney to Port Macquarie in 2014. After settling into the area, she realised it was the right place for her to take a leap of faith, and that's how Hawkes Conveyancing was born. Lauren feels incredibly lucky to have built the business with the support of the local community and her clients. When it comes to work-life balance,

Lauren admits that she used to pride herself on always being available, taking calls and responding to emails at all hours, even during weekends. However, in 2022, her son’s illness prompted a deep reflection on her priorities. It was a wake-up call that made her realise the importance of being present for her family. While she remains dedicated to her work, she now maintains a stricter boundary between work and home life. She has committed to a 9 to 5 work schedule and ensures that weekends are reserved for family and friends, allowing her to relax and recharge.

This shift in mindset has helped Lauren balance the demands of running a business with the importance of spending quality time with loved ones, a lesson she holds dear as she continues to grow Hawkes Conveyancing.

LYNDAL THROWER NICOLE LANDY

SOVEREIGN HILLS LAND SALES CENTRE

Nicole Landy has been with Sovereign Hills since April 2007, marking nearly 18 years with the land sales team. Her journey in real estate began before joining Sovereign Hills, and the opportunity to become part of the team excited her. Over the years, her passion for the work has only grown stronger, making it a fulfilling career.

Nicole values a healthy work-life balance. Although she works five days a week, she ensures she has time for her personal life. She enjoys playing golf, going for walks, and catching up with friends. Recently, she started Pilates classes with Lyndal, something she has quickly come to love. These activities help her recharge and stay balanced, both physically and mentally.

Staying motivated and productive comes naturally to Nicole. She finds that no two days are the same, with always something to keep her busy, even when challenges arise. For Nicole, the key is doing what she loves. Her passion for her job and the satisfaction it brings keep her inspired and productive, no matter what obstacles come her way.

Lyndal Thrower has been with Sovereign Hills for nearly three years. Her career path began in the display village, and when a position in the land sales team opened up, it felt like a natural next step.

Lyndal also prioritises a healthy work-life balance, especially with her busy household of seven. To recharge, she and her husband bought a caravan and take weekend getaways each month. She enjoys morning walks along the beach and has recently embraced Pilates as part of her self-care routine.

When faced with tough times, Lyndal stays motivated and productive by slowing down, taking a deep breath, and refocusing. Making lists and checking off completed tasks helps her stay organised and keep the bigger picture in mind, ensuring she remains focused and motivated in both her professional and personal life.

Bernie has been self-employed for almost 9 years, running a business dedicated to helping individuals navigate the challenges of life with mindfulness and self-care.

The inspiration for Bernie’s career shift came from a combination of personal and professional experiences. Although she was successful in the corporate world, she found herself uninspired and experiencing workrelated stress. After undergoing treatment for breast cancer, she took time off to reflect and recharge. This period of introspection led Bernie to feel a strong calling to help others better manage life’s ups and downs and shift their negative thinking. She was determined to guide people toward embracing a more confident, calm sense of self and prioritising self-care.

Maintaining a healthy work-life balance is important to Bernie. She prioritises herself and her needs by setting clear, positive boundaries. Through self-awareness, she knows when

it's time to slow down, take a break, and engage in activities that nurture her well-being. Whether it's taking a peaceful walk on the beach, listening to calming music, practicing gentle movement, or spending time with loved ones, Bernie listens to her body and mind. She also makes meditation and mindfulness a daily practice, using these tools to maintain balance and clarity.

During tough times, Bernie stays motivated and productive by taking regular breaks throughout her day. One of her strategies is the "One Minute Pause & Breathe," which helps her reset and refocus. She also sticks to a plan, always reminding herself to see the bigger picture, focus on the positive, and acknowledge her progress. These strategies keep her grounded, productive, and focused on her mission to help others live more mindful, balanced lives.

What you do: I’m the owner of The Gold And Coin Shop in the Colonial Arcade, Port Macquarie. This is never dull. One moment I’m selling beautiful jewellery, new or estate, or selling banknotes and coins, to buying no longer wanted or broken scrap jewellery, sovereigns, gold and silver coins.

Your journey: I moved from my orthoptic profession of 40 years to full time owning and operating a unique retail business, whilst my late husband was undergoing brain cancer treatment, which was ultimately unsuccessful.

LORRAINE HAYNES

As you can imagine, this was an extremely stressful and tragic time for me.

Your achievements: It was a huge achievement for me to set up the shop and get it operating under difficult circumstances. The business has grown incredibly. I cannot thank my loyal staff and customers enough who have supported me along the way. A major event I am planning is a ‘VIP Diamond Event’ to be held on 10th and 11th April 2025. This will showcase both “natural” and “never mined lab grown” diamonds, both loose and as jewellery pieces. Outside of work: I delight in spending time with my partner Alan and our gorgeous, of course not spoilt, dogs on the beach. I also love to play cards with close friends, do jigsaw puzzles online and enjoy reading recipes.

Words of wisdom: Look for ways to be kind to yourself, and to be supportive and generous to your staff.

DEBBI PHILLIPS

How long have you owned/worked there? 6 years

What inspired you to start your business or pursue this career? I was working as a business broker, and it was a natural progression from selling businesses to selling property. I’ve always loved real estate and viewing homes, I was the person that attended open homes for fun, long before I was in real estate.

How do you maintain a healthy work-life balance?

Being able to work from anywhere, anytime, from our Lake Cathie office next to Woolworths, out on location, or from my home office, provides flexibility in accommodating my clients and family. I also play golf once a week and walk my dogs at the beach. What strategies do you use to stay motivated and productive, especially during tough times? My clients keep me motivated, being entrusted with the sale of their home, or the biggest purchase they will ever make, makes me always want to achieve the best possible outcome

for them. Listing a new property for sale, is still exciting for me as every home is different. I love showcasing a property and providing tips on how to add value.

Satisfied clients energise my day and awards are a bonus! Winning Agent of the Year at Lake Cathie and Camden Haven for the last 4 years running, and having won again in 2025, is a great motivator. Receiving positive reviews means a lot.

It’s important to me that all of my clients are happy with the service that I provide. I love being ‘part of their journey’.

Being part of a local expert team also makes a big difference.

OWNER - TOUCHWOOD FLOWERS

How long have you owned/ worked there. I have owned Touchwood Flowers for 20 years this year!! I did work experience in Year 11 in 2003, got a parttime traineeship in 2004 and bought the business in March 2005. (A big shoutout to my parents for believing in their 17 year old daughter all those years ago, without them, this would never have been possible.)

What inspired you to start your business or pursue this career? I had always wanted to be a florist from a very young age. I guess the beauty of flowers and being a creative person attracted me to this career. Even after all these years, I cannot imagine myself doing anything else.

How do you maintain a healthy worklife balance? This can be a tough task at times. I wear many hats including business owner, mother, wife, and physie teacher and I have a set day off each week to myself. I teach Physie at Bonny Hills Physical Culture 2 nights a week where I spend time with my wonderful students and get

to exercise at the same time. I also try to keep weekends free to spend time with my beautiful family to enjoy all the fun things that life has to offer.

What strategies do you use to stay motivated and productive, especially during tough times? I have the most wonderful team to help keep me motivated and inspired. Being surrounded by these incredible ladies every day, sharing a passion for flowers and a vision to be the best florist we can, makes me really proud as a business owner.

Investing in a business coaching program has also made a huge difference in the way I run and forward plan in my business.

BIANCA MOORE

How long have you owned/worked there? I have owned my business for three years in total - starting online and attending local markets before moving into a retail space 18 months ago. In August 2024, we relocated to our current shop.

What inspired you to start your business or pursue this career? I was inspired to start this journey because I longed for a space where I could explore, learn, and connect with others without the fear of judgment - a solace that was welcoming to all. That desire was the foundation for The Witchy Nook. I wanted to create the kind of space I wish I had, a place where people of all backgrounds and experience levels could come, ask questions, and embrace their paths with confidence. The Witchy Nook is more than a shop; it’s a safe space built for the community by the community.

How do you maintain a healthy work-life balance? The Witchy Nook is an extension of me, so it’s easy to find a balance when I love what I’m doing. I genuinely practice what I preach - everything I sell is something I personally use, from crystals, teas, to the self care items. I love to get outside, go on adventures to new places, and spend time with those closest to me.

What strategies do you use to stay motivated and productive, especially during tough times?

To stay motivated and productive, I focus on my purpose - helping people connect, heal, and grow. When challenges arise, I remind myself why I started and why I will always continually work on this. I also plan ahead, set clear goals, and continuously introduce fresh ideas. Collaborating with other local businesses and charities keeps me inspired, reminding me that The Witchy Nook is part of something bigger than just a shop - it’s a community.

How long have you owned/worked there? I launched Farnsworth Financial in July of 2022.

What inspired you to start your business or pursue this career? I had a desire to provide a lending experience for my clients that was not like anything they would experience anywhere else. Having worked in banking since I was 19 for multiple institutions, I was able to get an in depth understanding of the lending process and the pain points that customers felt when purchasing property. I decided to establish Farnsworth Financial to eliminate those pain points and make the home buying a seamless and truly exciting experience.

How do you maintain a healthy work-life balance? I would be lying if I said that I have this down pat. I always prioritise kids sport and extracurricular activities as a must. This is because family time is extremely important to me. I am also lucky to have a supportive husband who picks up the slack around the house so that my days off are free to spend time doing what we love as a family. What strategies do you use to stay motivated and productive, especially during tough times? As a sole operator, self-motivation is extremely important for my business to grow as there is no one else who will push me. I am constantly setting goals for myself and forever working towards achieving them. I stick to the SMART model when setting my goals ensuring they are Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant & Timely. Once my goals are set I then choose a reward for myself for once the goal is achieved. This helps to give me a little extra motivation through the tough times.

FLYNN’S BEACH & LORD STREET PHARMACY

Melinda Dalton and Sophie Rourke are the owners of Flynn’s Beach and Lord Street Pharmacies. After years of working in the pharmacies and gaining extensive experience in patient care, they officially took over as owners in 2023. This shift allowed them to shape the business with a focus on accessible, patient-centered care.

Growing up in small towns, both Melinda and Sophie developed a strong sense of community and a belief that quality healthcare should be accessible to everyone. Their goal is to provide a pharmacy where service is a priority, making each patient feel like family. Their services reflect this commitment, including 24-hour support for nursing home patients, in-home medication reviews at no cost, and affordable naturopath consultations that blend conventional and alternative therapies for holistic health.

Maintaining a healthy work-life balance is important to them. Both women value family and, while balancing work and home life can be challenging, they make time for important moments. Their husbands and children provide incredible support, helping them stay present for both business milestones and family events. Their motivation comes from their purpose - ensuring patients have access to the best healthcare. They stay focused on their vision and rely on their dedicated team for support. The relationships they’ve built with their patients remind them daily of why they do what they do, whether through medication management or integrating alternative therapies.

What you do…I lead our team, work alongside our wonderful bookkeeper on finances, and manage all the overlooked logistics. It’s an ongoing hustle with both wholesale and retail six days a week

Your journey….My journey with Baked Culture began in 2020 with my partner, Ben. He’s the mastermind behind our sourdough and pastries, while I would organise market stalls, set up in the early hours, sell the products, and then pack everything up again - all while a newborn and two teens were along for the ride! Once we secured our permanent shop that you see today in Wauchope, it has been incredible and sometimes surreal to watch our little market stall evolve into what you see today. Being a mum of three certainly adds some extra challenges to my roles as both a businesswoman and a parent, but I wouldn’t change it for the world.

the challenges that life throws our way, we’re beginning to truly understand the vital importance of maintaining a healthy work/ life balance. It’s a journey filled with ups and downs, especially as we juggle our business responsibilities and the demands of raising kids. Yet, amidst the hustle and bustle, we cherish those small moments of gratitude and the precious downtime we can find.

Outside of work…I’m a mum of three—two teenagers and a toddler - so it’s quite the juggling act! I love everything related to design, whether it’s interior design, fashion, painting, or simply finding inspiration in nature. Health/wellness are significant parts of my daily routine, and spending time with my beautiful friends, family, and nurturing my faith truly fills my cup!

LUCY HUMPHRIES

Lucy Humphries Photography is celebrating its fifth year in business, a milestone that reflects Lucy’s passion for capturing memories. From a young age, she was always the person with a camera, ensuring moments were documented. Her father owned a photography business, and she learned to develop film in a darkroom as a child.

After the birth of her youngest child, Lucy’s husband gifted her a Canon camera, and her passion for photography grew. What started with documenting her own family soon blossomed into photographing friends, their families, and eventually weddings. Lucy feels privileged to be a part of such meaningful moments in people’s lives.

Maintaining a healthy work-life balance is a constant challenge for Lucy. Her dedication to providing exceptional experiences for her clients often means the work can spill over into personal time, especially since much of the editing and administrative tasks are done at home. However, Lucy strives to carve out space in her schedule for important family events, like soccer games or dance competitions for her children. Finding time to be present with her family is crucial for her.

During tough times, Lucy draws motivation from her clients, many of whom return to her for future events, which reinforces her dedication to delivering an exceptional standard of service. Her family, husband Lee and children Max and Ruby, are also a huge source of motivation, as their pride in her work is deeply rewarding. The kind words from her clients, such as the bride who told her she was “everything she wanted and more” on her wedding day, inspire Lucy to keep giving her best.

Ihave been running my new organisation, Candia Care and Support since October of 2024. I’m driven by a deep passion for helping others live their best lives. DANIELLE MARSHALL

Can you share your career journey and the pivotal moments that led you to your current role? I started as a registered nurse in various roles before specialising in aesthetics with a Post Graduate Diploma in Cosmetic Nursing. I worked with some of the most experienced plastic surgeons in the Newcastle and Canberra regions before starting my own clinic in beautiful South West Rocks.

Who have been your biggest mentors or influences in your career? I have been very privileged to work with some amazing women throughout my career. From power house business women who taught me the importance of five star service without compromise, to practitioners who are so knowledgeable about their field and so willing to share their experience. You can’t be what you can’t see so I find myself continually grateful to follow in the footsteps of all the women who went before me.

What practices do you implement to ensure your mental well-being and productivity? Staying active! Some days it’s just a brief walk around the beach but I try to keep a regular gym routine and I have just taken up tennis. Most importantly, being present when I am at home with my children and husband even when work can sometimes follow me home.

What legacy do you hope to leave within your industry or community? I hope other aspiring nurses can see the path to starting their own independent business and know that it is within reach. I would love to grow big enough that I can provide employment opportunities for women in the area and to continue to support our local community of female led businesses.

NEW VISION POOLS

Stacey Wilcox is the owner of New Vision Pools, a pool installation company she founded in December 2023. With several years of experience in the pool building industry, Stacey has gained invaluable expertise and insight into the trade. Her decision to start her own business was driven by her passion for transforming outdoor spaces and helping families create unforgettable experiences in their backyards. As a female entrepreneur in an industry where women are underrepresented, Stacey felt even more determined to carve out a space for herself and make a meaningful impact.

Stacey’s inspiration for starting New Vision Pools stemmed from her desire to offer more than just a pool installation service. She believes that a pool is more than a luxury - it’s a space where families can gather, relax, and form lasting memories. This vision of enhancing both the aesthetic and functional aspects of a property inspired her to create a business that could help families build spaces of connection and joy.

Balancing work and life is a priority for Stacey. She sets clear working hours and makes time for family and loved ones, ensuring that she stays connected and present. Whether it’s camping weekends with her family or weekly Friday night dinners with close friends, Stacey values creating moments that help her recharge and maintain a healthy balance.

During tough times, Stacey stays motivated and productive through several key strategies. First, she sets clear, achievable goals, breaking down larger tasks into manageable steps. This provides a sense of accomplishment and keeps her moving forward. She also stays connected to her "why" - the reason she started New Vision Pools. This focus on helping families create meaningful backyard experiences fuels her perseverance. What you do… My primary role these days as the co-founder of Chop ‘n Chill is to oversee and lead all aspects of our various restaurants. This requires a broad range of skillsets, some of which include the managing of staffing, marketing in its various formats, menu and beverage development, venue presentation and the growth of new restaurants as they open. I am particularly guided by feedback from guests to determine where we are getting it right, and where we can make changes if necessary in an ever evolving industry.

Your journey…. Apart from a period of several years where I was employed as a Director within an Australian university in Singapore, my primary income throughout my adult life has been as a business owner. This has ranged from the building and truck industry through to owning multiple restaurants.

Your achievements…. Having had previous experience in the hospitality industry, it was an educated leap to bring that experience to a revelation that I thought my home town would embrace. That revelation was the combination of my own culinary discoveries from a lifetime of travel, the best of southeast Asian cuisine blended with smoked Americana meats. The end result of this concept has been Chop ‘n Chill, ‘where east meets west’.

Any business owner will tell you that a new startup business is always a tremendous personal and financial risk. We are so pleased and truly appreciative that all our restaurants have become such a success thanks to the support of both our loyal regular customers and my extraordinary dedicated beautiful staff.

Words of wisdom… Life isn’t about finding yourself, it is about creating yourself. With that as a basis, I simply tell myself every morning “Be brave Jacqs and chase your dreams.” chopnchill.com.au

Hi Karina. Can you share a bit about your background and what drew you to a career as a makeup artist?

When I was growing up, I had no idea what I wanted to do. I was always interested in hair and makeup but never imagined I would actually have a career in it, which is funny because I can’t imagine doing anything else now. Once I realised I could work in the TV/Film and Theatre Industry, I did everything I needed to do to get into the course. I worked very hard, sourced the money to pay for it and put my all into it, which is how I ended up here in Australia. What are some of the things you love most about this industry and the work you do?

what you love rather than withering away

I can be free to do as I please, in a job that I enjoy. No boss, no one to tell me what to do and I can be as creative as I want. The industry is always changing and growing. It’s so much more now than I think it's ever been really! Social media has taken beauty to a whole new level, making more creative jobs for people. You can really just start your own social media page now, showcase all your work and there you go, you got yourself a job doing what you love rather than withering away in some role you have no interest in. Beauty has become a part of our lives now with new products constantly at our fingertips, MU tutorials, endless options, affordable and easily accessible. I used to have the worst skin but nowadays skincare is on a whole new level. The beauty industry is leveling up and I want to be a part of it all.

You have been working hard on the development of a new product, can you share a little about the concept and how this idea came to you?

Honestly, the idea came to me about 5 years ago. I just kept thinking about it when I was working, and the more I did, the more I realised this is something we need, this is something that many Industries need! So around 2.5 years ago I decided to go into

was working, and the more I did, the more

Woolworths, buy a silicone baby bib, cut it up, sew it together and bring my imagination to life. When I did that, I knew there was no going back, I had to get this made. I was working part-time in an office when a good friend of mine said, you need to go see a 3D CAD designer and get them to draw it up on a computer. So I googled 3D CAD Designer in Port Macquarie and that’s how my business relationship started with Adam Burt at 3D Tech. He was just great; excited and enthusiastic which was a perfect fit for me. From there the recommendations and people I met just happened so naturally, and here I am 2.5 years later.

What has the development process been like? What have been the most challenging and rewarding aspects of this process?

I remember at the beginning I thought, oh I’ll have this on the market in 6 months, hahathat makes me laugh now. I had absolutely no idea! It's a completely new product, design, that has never been done before. I had to think of everything from patents, business set up, concept, design, sourcing the right material, navigating my way through it, speaking to people, different companies and moving forward 4 paces and back 3. It takes time. It's been challenging, and at times I’ve felt like giving up, but then I’d feel differently a few days later. It’s a slow process and a bit of a lonely one because I didn’t really have anyone else with me that knew exactly what was going on to share it with. I’m also the kind of person that until I can see it exactly as it is in my head, it's just a stepping stone. Sourcing the material was what took the longest. I knew what I wanted and I had to go through quite a few materials until I found it, and when I did, that was very exciting. I guess now is the most rewarding part though, because it’s done. The website is almost ready to launch and I’m so close to having it on the market.

How does it feel to now see the result of years of hard work coming to fruition?

It’s actually quite daunting, believe it or not. Exciting, but also daunting. I’m not going to sugarcoat it. It’s like Imposter Syndrome, I feel it's there but I’m that stubborn I’m still going to do it. I’m crapping myself, but, ah well I’m gonna do it anyway kind of vibe!

process and a bit of a lonely one because I didn’t really have anyone else with me that knew exactly what was going on to share it with, I’m also the kind of person that until I can see it exactly as it is in my head, it’s just a stepping stone.

I’m looking forward to all the interesting people I’m going to meet on my journey and what else is going to come out of it. I do have a few more ideas up my sleeve.

Who is the Kloud Palette designed for and what are its benefits?

I originally designed the Kloud Palette for MU Artists, to use while working from their hands, but to be honest, since I started I’ve thought of so many other industries who can benefit from it - Lash and Brow Technicians Tattooists, Cosmetic Nurses etc. I think once it's out there we’ll find even more.

What has the feedback been like so far?

I’ve always had enthusiastic feedback about it, from day one. Even though I knew the

product stood a solid chance once it was made, the feedback was always excitement and encouragement which just added to my drive to get it finished. Most people can't believe it hasn’t been done already.

Are you able to share when we will be able to get our hands on the Kloud Palette and how to go about it?

I can’t say an actual date right now, but soon! Follow the Instagram KloudPalette page and you’ll be notified as soon as the website goes live. You can then purchase straight from our ecommerce site.

Where can we find out more, get in touch or follow your journey?

Our website is still under construction but we’ve completed the final shoot, so in a few weeks you’ll be able to purchase from the site, but until then you can follow our journey on Instagram at KloudPalette.

Thanks Karina.

Women in MagnifyingBusiness success

for Sandra Magann, Principal and Founder of Magnified, has been recognised as one of the Global Top 50 Women in Accounting, celebrating her commitment to empowering women in business.

This award demonstrates your success in accounting and supporting the women on your team and female business leaders. Why is this your passion? During my 35-year career in accounting, I’ve been continually impressed and inspired by women working hard to achieve success and build the lives they want for themselves and their families.

Supporting these women through employment, mentoring, volunteering and providing business accounting services is extremely rewarding. How do you support the development of women in your team? As my business has grown, I’ve hired and promoted female accounting professionals. For instance, one trainee completed her degree and is now pursuing further certification.

In addition to enhancing our team’s technical skills, we have also invested in soft skills, such

as communication, productivity, emotional intelligence, and self-care through workshops, conferences, and our in-house book club. By offering career advancement opportunities and flexible work arrangements, we’ve built a team with shared values of Relationships, Integrity, Potential, Innovation, and People. How does this extend to helping other women in business? Education is key to empowerment. I recently completed a Women in Leadership Program to enhance my mentoring skills. I also hold workshops for businesswomen, providing essential knowledge to build confidence and capabilities.

At Magnified, in addition to providing accounting, tax and compliance, we support our clients’ business growth with advisory services, goal-setting, business planning and coaching. You also give back to women in our community. Which organisations have you

contributed to? I’m proud to be Treasurer of Liberty Domestic & Family Violence Specialist Services and have volunteered with Hastings Business Women’s Network, Luminosity Youth Summit and Dyslexia Mid North Coast. What tips can you share for women looking to grow their business? Understanding your financials is crucial for making informed decisions. Some consider doing the books the boring bit, yet the numbers reveal so much — opportunities to seize, emerging issues to watch, and where you should focus to unlock your business’s full potential.

Achieve your business goals with expert accounting and advice.

FROM PRIEST LEGAL

Would Priest Legal thrive without the women in its business? The answer is a resounding “No”. From our Receptionist, Kate Simpson through to our hard working, committed lawyers, Loris Hendy and Emilie Cooper, every one of the women in Priest Legal contribute to our thriving practice. Kate manages the calls that come in, makes the diary appointments, does the errands as any receptionist might, but her skills as an actress and entertainer add a special dimension to our practice.

Renee Hilberts is our Accounts Manager and part-time Probate Clerk. Almost nothing evades Renee’s eagle mathematical eye. Recently, a debt collector acting for Red Energy sought the payment of $65 for an overdue account from a deceased estate. Red Energy and the debt collector had both mistaken a credit of $65 for a debit – not so Renee. A local accounting firm recently responded to one of Renee’s emails by saying “Wow you guys do pay attention!!!!!! Soon you won’t need us”.

Melissa Kennedy, Joy Brinklow, Ali Zahn-Meyer, Katie Hutchins and Belinda Bell make up our team of conveyancers – happy to attend at both our Wauchope and Port Macquarie offices. Melissa, Joy and Katie are all fully licensed conveyancers. Priest Legal has relied

on Melissa’s skills as a conveyancer, good communicator and team player for more than 20 years. Joy’s accent reflects her native Scotland and her natural determination and meticulous attention to detail mixed with warmth and humour. No stone is left unturned in any property transaction on Joy or Melissa’s watch.

Belinda and Ali support the conveyancers as they undertake more than 350 conveyances a year. Belinda’s cheerful demeanour and unwavering calm in a pressured conveyancing environment ensures that the conveyancing process runs smoothly from start to finish. Ali is an experienced legal secretary – originally hailing from Glen Innes. Ali is also personal assistant to directors Nicholas Lawton and Tim Couch as well as the back-up person for the conveyancing, wills, probates and family law requirements of the firm as needed.

Catherine Rumble and Tanya Tunbridge are our Wills and Estates secretaries – assisted by Renee and Ali and sometimes Maryanne and Meneesha. Catherine has only recently joined the practice, having moved to the Hastings from Wagga Wagga and is already a key member of our team. Estate work requires patience, a methodical attention to detail, financial intelligence, empathy and excellent communication skills. Both Tanya and Catherine have these skills in abundance.

Maryanne Wright has been Jeremy Brigden’s personal assistant and litigation secretary for more than a decade. Together they are a

formidable litigation team. Litigation requires resilience and an ability to work under pressure. Maryanne has these skills. The office would be a duller place without our Maryanne. Loris Hendy, Meneesha Guthrie and Katie Hutchins are our women in business in Wauchope (Emilie squeezes in here on a Monday and Katy attends virtually but critically from Canada). From a business perspective, our Wauchope office is thriving and that can only be due to the efforts of this team under Loris’s watchful eye and extensive experience as a lawyer. The Wauchope office provides the gamut of legal services from family law to wills and estates, general advice and conveyancing. Only an experienced lawyer like Loris Hendy can manage such a breadth of knowledge and skills. It is not possible to do this without the keen and skilled support that Loris receives from Meneesha and Katie and our Port Macquarie office.

Lastly, but far from least, is our second youngest recruit – Sophie Triggs. Sophie started off in reception and four years later she is sprinting towards the end of her legal studies to become a solicitor. Sophie has taken to legal practice like a sprinter in the latest bionic footwear and understudies for all the lawyers in the practice. We rest our case. Priest Legal would not thrive without the women in its practice. If you have any legal issues, please contact our talented team on 6583 1777 or visit priestlegal.com.au

Thrumster Business Park Rezoning Application Receives Unanimous Support by Councillors

In the December Council meeting, Thrumster Business Park received endorsement by all 8 Councillors in attendance for the rezoning application. This milestone marks the beginning of a transformative development in this rapidly growing area, poised to meet the growing needs of local businesses, residents, and the wider community.

The rezoning of a portion of the business park opens the door to a diverse range of opportunities, including new industrial and commercial spaces, and will play a critical role in addressing the shortage of affordable accommodation in the area through innovative housing solutions.

Thrumster’s expanding population and workforce have led to an increasing demand for both commercial spaces and affordable housing. As the region continues to grow, securing housing for essential workers, first-

home buyers, and students has become an urgent priority. In response, Thrumster Business Park’s development plan incorporates shop-top housing and serviced apartments, offering a much-needed solution for students, first-time buyers, and visiting professionals. These housing options will provide affordable accommodation close to employment hubs and the Health and Education precinct, reducing commuting times and enhancing the quality of life for residents.

As part of the broader vision for the Thrumster Business Park, we are pleased to announce plans to include an early learning centre within the precinct and are excited to work with the region’s leading provider, Little Learners. The proposed early learning centre will not only provide essential support for families but also contribute to the creation of local jobs, further strengthening the community’s economic foundation.

With the commencement of commercial construction, Thrumster Business Park will not only meet the needs of the local economy but also contribute to the creation of a more connected, sustainable, and thriving community.

“We are thrilled with the outcome of the vote,” said Trevor Groeneveld, Managing Director for Thrumster Business Park. “The unanimous approval reflects a shared vision for a stronger, more prosperous future for Thrumster and surrounding areas. This project is not just about building infrastructure—it’s about building a sustainable and thriving community.”

THE GUTS, GRIT AND GROUNDWORK OF REMARKABLE REGIONAL ENTREPRENEURS, INNOVATORS, LEADERS AND GAME CHANGERS.

Sabrina Bowden relocated to Port Macquarie in 2019 from Armidale and since her arrival in our community has given her heart, soul and a generous dose of time and talent to key community projects and programs in both her role at Regional Australia Bank and in her personal life. Driven and passionate, she is on an exciting leadership journey to create a lasting impact in our community.

WBOWDEN SABRINA

hat inspired you to make the move to the coast and take on a new leadership role as Regional Manager at RAB and a join a new community?

My husband Sam and I had always dreamed of relocating to the coast, but we hadn't made any concrete plans to turn this dream into reality. At 26 years old, I had been working at Regional Australia Bank for four years and was deeply focused on my career in leadership.

An opportunity came up to move to Port Macquarie for a six month secondment as the Regional Manager. This role not only allowed me to work with a new team and further develop my leadership skills, but it also gave us the chance to live in a beautiful part of the world with an active and engaged community.

When you joined the team what were your hopes and dreams for its future? How did you feel your skill set could make a difference?

During the merger in 2016, I came from Regional Australia Bank, and my team was from Holiday Coast Credit Union. Our vision was to unite two cultures, learn and grow from each other, and bring the best of both worlds into our new team as we moved forward. As a mutual bank, we are here for our members and our community, which drives us to keep

growing and helping more regional Australians. I knew there would be a lot of change, and my role as a leader was to support my team and provide clarity and direction during this time so they could excel in servicing our members. My previous experience working with people going through change helped during this transition. You have always been driven and dedicated and stepped into leadership roles early in your career - what was your biggest fear as you entered this new role and world? Was there ever a moment you doubted this new direction, and how did you overcome it?  My biggest fear was, "What if I fail?" This role was a step up, and I was moving to a new town without my husband Sam. I didn’t know anyone in the team yet and didn’t have any friends in Port Macquarie. It was truly stepping outside of my comfort zone. A few things helped me stay resilient on challenging days and become confident in my value to the team as their leader: self-reflection and continued learning, putting myself out there to build a community by trying new things and meeting new people, and recognising that there are people in my corner who want me to succeed.

You’ve spent the last 10 years in various leadership roles and are the first to put your hand up to take on a challenge, what do you feel is your most powerful attribute you have learned to become a better leader and ultimately making a difference?

Commitment to learning. People who are open to feedback, learn from mistakes and want to improve are usually the best performers. I think it's important not only for leaders, but for everyone. It creates a great culture when everyone is learning from each other and always looking for ways to improve.

What has been your greatest achievement during your journey in Port Macquarie?

One of my achievements is the growth that myself and the team have undergone professionally over the last five years. This has seen the business and my team expand which means we have been able to help more people achieve their financial goals. I am proud of the relationships I have made since moving to Port Macquarie and the community initiatives I have been involved with. There are so many amazing people out there making a real difference. You just need to get out there, start meeting them and get involved.

and influential role in our communities and empower the people and businesses of regional Australia to achieve great things. Our people get a real kick out of helping individuals achieve their lifestyle and financial goals. They share the desire to see our communities succeed, which is why you’ll often see them coaching the soccer team, working on committees or helping raise money for the next big community project. We also pledge more than 5% of our profits back into grass roots community initiatives. Can you share some of the community projects and activities that you are passionate about and contribute to?

our entire network back into regional Australia in the 2023/2024 financial year.

How instrumental have sages and critics been in your evolution as a leader? What is the most valuable lesson they taught you? There is just as much to learn from critics as there are sages. Listen to what the critics are saying and look objectively to see if anything can be learnt from them. What would it take to turn your biggest critic into your biggest advocate? At the very least use it to motivate you – if they think you can’t do it, show them you can!

Sages are rare so hold onto them. If you are inspired by someone, see what you can learn from them and ask lots of questions. It’s important also to have people with different views to challenge your way of thinking.

Community impact and advocacy run strongly through the narrative of Regional Australia Bank. How important has it been to connect and elevate this community? It’s extremely important. We play an active

I first got involved with the Luminosity Youth Summit through work and then volunteered my time with the committee, assisting behind the scenes. Luminosity inspires today's youth by providing them with access to world-class leaders, an opportunity usually not available to young adults growing up in regional areas. Another group I'm part of is Port Macquarie Seadragons, which is more than an ocean swimming club - it’s an inclusive community that promotes water safety skills, friendship, fitness, and respect for the ocean. They also raise funds for cancer initiatives. Additionally, Regional Australia Bank's Community Partnership

You have achieved so much and have such an exciting journey ahead - what tips do you have for other young leaders wanting to make their mark on the world?

Get comfortable failing. The fear of failure can put immense pressure on you, preventing you from being courageous and trying new things. However, once you embrace failure, that's where the magic happens. It empowers you to be bold and take risks. This mindset allows you to learn and grow by reflecting on your experiences: "I tried X, it didn't work, but here's what I learned."

Thanks Sabrina.

On International Women’s Day, we celebrate the remarkable achievements of women across all industries. In the business of education, female principals are dynamic leaders, shaping the minds of future generations while managing complex school operations. Their roles extend beyond administration; they serve as mentors, role models, and catalysts for change within their communities.

In the Catholic schools of the Hastings Region, we take pride in celebrating our female leaders who play a crucial role in shaping the educational landscape. In particular, we acknowledge the dedication of our three principals in Port Macquarie: Tess Koning, Principal of St Peter’s Primary School, Tanya Daley, Principal of St Joseph’s Regional College, and Cath Eichmann, Principal of MacKillop College. These outstanding leaders are deeply embedded in their communities, guiding students to become life-long learners and ensuring that students remain at the heart of every decision they make.

Leadership in School Management

Female principals, like ours, bring a unique blend of empathy, collaboration, and strategic thinking to school leadership. A study published in the International Journal of Learning, Teaching and Educational Research found that female principals are more engaged in instructional leadership than their

male counterparts, focusing on the quality of teaching and learning.

By prioritising professional development at their schools, they create a culture of continuous learning for teachers. Their open communication channels encourage collaboration and innovation, leading to improved student outcomes. Female principals often implement policies that promote diversity, equity, and inclusion, ensuring that all students feel valued and supported. Role Models and Mentors

The presence of female principals in leadership positions provides students, especially girls, with tangible role models. Seeing women in leadership fosters ambition and challenges traditional gender norms.

Beyond inspiring students, female principals play a vital role in mentoring teachers. Research in the International Journal of Leadership in Education highlights that female school leaders tend to support and empower their staff, creating a positive and cooperative school culture. By encouraging female teachers to seek leadership roles, they help build a strong pipeline of women leaders in education.

Impact on Student Achievement

Effective leadership correlates with better student performance. Studies indicate that female principals, with their strong focus on instructional leadership, create environments that contribute to higher academic

achievement. A qualitative study analysing teachers’ perceptions found that female school principals positively influence both teacher performance and student success.

Our principals, Tess, Tanya and Cath’s leadership style emphasises collaboration, problem-solving, and student-centred decision-making. These qualities create an environment where students feel supported and motivated to achieve their personal best. Challenges and the Path Forward

Despite their impact, nationally, female principals still face challenges such as gender bias and underrepresentation in leadership roles. While women make up a significant portion of the teaching workforce, they remain underrepresented in principal positions, particularly at the secondary school level.

To address these disparities, the Hastings Region of Catholic Schools has implemented comprehensive training and professional development programs designed to support both current and aspiring school leaders. These initiatives provide leadership training, mentorship opportunities, and professional growth pathways for teachers and principals across the region.

By investing in leadership development, Catholic schools in the Hastings Region are not only strengthening the capabilities of their principals but also creating a sustainable pipeline of both female and male leaders in education.

If you are a homeowner, looking to enter the property market or an investor, chances are you have been following along closely in anticipation for a rate reduction. Finally in February, it seemed our prayers were answered when the Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) announced a reduction to the cash rate by 25 basis points, bringing it down to 4.10 per cent. This was the first movement to the cash rate since November of 2023 and the first reduction since November of 2020! As the economic landscape continues to shift, understanding the implications of these changes is crucial for making informed financial decisions.

The RBA’s decision to lower interest rates is a response to various economic factors, including inflation, employment rates, and global economic trends. Lower interest rates generally indicate a move to stimulate economic activity, making borrowing cheaper and encouraging spending. For many Australians, this could translate into a more favourable environment for securing loans, particularly in the housing market.

Implications for Homeowners

For existing homeowners, the RBA’s rate reduction is a welcome relief. Many homeowners are currently feeling the pinch from rising living costs and previous rate hikes. With the new lower rates, those on variable-rate mortgages can expect to see their minimum

monthly repayments decrease, easing some financial pressure. This reduction not only means more disposable income but can also provide homeowners with an opportunity to pay down their mortgage faster by keeping their loan repayments the same or consider refinancing options to secure a better deal.

Opportunities for Home Buyers

For potential home buyers, the RBA’s interest rate cut opens the door to greater affordability. Lower borrowing costs mean that buyers can access larger loans or reduce their monthly repayments, making homeownership more attainable. This is particularly beneficial for first-time buyers who may have found the previous interest rates daunting. However, while lower rates are advantageous, buyers should still exercise caution. The housing market can be unpredictable, and it’s essential to consider factors such as property values, location, and long-term financial stability. Buyers are encouraged to work with their broker to understand how much they can afford to borrow, shop around for the right mortgage, and to seek a pre-approval prior to making offers.

Impact on Investors

For property investors, the RBA’s decision presents both opportunities and challenges. Lower interest rates can enhance cash flow by reducing the cost of borrowing, making it a great time to consider purchasing investment

properties. Investors may find it easier to finance new purchases or refinance existing loans to unlock equity for further investments. On the other hand, as borrowing becomes cheaper, competition in the property market may intensify, potentially driving up property prices. Investors should remain vigilant and conduct thorough market research to identify areas with growth potential while keeping an eye on rental yields, as these can fluctuate with changing economic conditions.

While the RBA’s rate reduction is a positive move for many, it’s essential to remain aware of the broader economic conditions. Interest rates are influenced by various factors, including inflation and employment trends. As such, the RBA may adjust rates again in the future, depending on how the economy evolves and responds to the recent reduction in the cash rate.

So whether you are a homeowner, looking to enter the property market or a seasoned investor, one thing is for sure, engaging with financial advisors or mortgage brokers can provide valuable insights and help navigate the complexities of the current market. Understanding the implications of interest rates can help you make decisions that align with your financial aspirations. If you would like to discuss how the recent reduction to the cash rate has impacted your property goals then reach out at farnsworthfinancial.com.au and book a discovery appointment!

Over the span of my career prior to having the privilege of being elected as the Federal Member for Cowper in 2019, I was a police officer, police prosecutor, defence lawyer and small business owner. I have always worked in service of my community and have an experienced insight into the challenges our region faces every day. As a husband and father of two, I know we all want the same things for our families. Like the majority of my National Party colleagues, I am by no means a career politician. As a team, we base decisions on common sense and community feedback rather than ideology or political point scoring.

Over the past six years as your elected representative in Federal Parliament, I have been listening to our community and hearing your needs loud and clear. From my weekly mobile offices throughout the electorate, to the hundreds of calls, emails and letters that I receive each day, there have been clear and

consistent priorities that have shone through. We all want the same things for our families. You want and deserve a government that is serious about tackling cost of living pressures and lowering inflation, serious about providing access to quality health care, aged care and child care, serious about removing red tape and government over reach and serious about creating policies that benefit us all, not just those that yell the loudest.

As a member of the National Party and the coalition, I take the responsibility of being able to form government and drive the national agenda seriously. Over the past three years under a Labor, Greens and Teal Government, policy has been driven by an inner-city suburban agenda and our regional interests have been dismissed. Marketing MIND

with SIS HIGGINS

EOFY might still feel like a distant deadline, but March is the time to start planning. Businesses will soon be making key spending decisions, hunting for taxdeductions and looking to clear budgets before June 30, so act now to get the competitive edge.

For B2C brands:

• Run "early EOFY price-lock" promotions, encouraging customers to buy/join/subscribe now before prices increase.

• Promote high-value purchases - electronics, office furniture, appliances, building & construction products and services, vehicles and items that people often delay buying.

For B2B brands:

• Educate your audience on EOFY tax benefits - positioning your product as a smart, deductible investment.

• Use content marketing (blogs, emails, social media) to highlight why businesses should plan spending now instead of rushing in June.

2.

'Use-It-Or-Lose-It' Business Budgets

Many businesses have budgets that must be spent before June 30 or they lose it. March is prime time to get in front of these businesses. For service-based businesses:

• Offer EOFY retainers or annual plans that allow companies to pre-pay before tax time.

Consult – and get a free EOFY Playbook filled with pro-tips! e End of the Financial Year Is

• Market professional development, training, and consultancy services as strategic business investments.

For product-based businesses:

• Bundle products into EOFY-friendly business packs to increase perceived value.

3. Build Urgency - But Do It Right Urgency sells, but instead of bombarding customers with “LAST CHANCE EOFY DEALS!” use a tiered approach:

• March & April: “Plan ahead - lock in the best tax-time deals early.”

• May: “EOFY is around the corner - here’s how to make the most of it.”

• June: “Final EOFY countdown - last chance to save before tax time!”

Create exclusive early-access deals for VIP customers or email subscribers and offer bonuses for early action - an extra discount for businesses that buy before May.

4. Don’t Forget Small Businesses

While large corporations have finance teams managing EOFY spending, small business owners usually don’t and often leave it until the last minute.

How to reach them:

• Create simple, educational content on how EOFY spending can work in their favour.

• Offer flexible payment options - like Buy

Now, Pay Later (BNPL) or extended terms.

5. Create High-Value EOFY Bundles

EOFY is all about perceived value. Customers want to feel like they’re making a smart financial move.

For B2C:

• Bundle related products into tax-friendly EOFY packs e.g., “Work-from-home refresh pack” with a laptop, chair, and desk.

• Offer EOFY exclusive warranties or service add-ons to sweeten the deal.

For B2B:

• Provide tiered discounts e.g., “Spend $5,000 and get 10% off, spend $10,000 and get 20% off.”

• Offer subscription extensions e.g., “Sign up for a 12-month plan before June 30 and get two months free.”

Get Ahead Before the EOFY Rush

EOFY marketing isn’t just about last-minute sales - it’s about strategic, well-timed messaging that builds momentum early.

Rick is the owner and operator of Serenity Shu ers here in Port Macquarie and we can tell by cha ing with him and seeing the passion he has for his work and his customers that he is the guy who will always go above and beyond on the job.

Hi Rick, can you tell us a little about Serenity Shutters and how you got started in the industry?

I had been working in managerial roles in big box retail for 13 years, between supermarkets and hardware stores. I was desperately seeking a change and one of my good mates was working for another blinds and shutters company and said they were looking for another installer. As soon as I was on board I knew this was an industry

that suited me. I worked for them for around 3 years as an installer, but knowing I could do bigger and better things I started Serenity Shutters in 2018.

What inspired you to specialise in shutters, and what do you enjoy most about working in this field?

We don’t just specialise in shutters. We believe we really have a great understanding of all interior and exterior window furnishings and patio blinds. We pride ourselves on being able to offer professional advice to help our clients

make the best decisions for their homes and businesses. If I had to say we specialise in any area it would be our exterior range – Zipscreen blinds/awnings and aluminium shutters.

We really love getting to see a job completed and our clients’ excitement when we don’t just meet, but exceed the expectations of what our products and services can do.

What sets Serenity Shutters apart from other window furnishing businesses?

We are a small family operated company. We always try to have the same person that does

control so we could crane 6.5 metre wide Zipscreen awnings onto the deck of the 7th floor penthouse at the new Galleria building at Town Beach, or fabricating a 7 metre wide by 4 metre tall angled privacy screen. Challenge Accepted.

What are some of the most popular styles or trends in shutters and window furnishings right now?

Curtains are Back!!! I always said I wouldn’t do curtains but a few years ago we broke to the pressure, found a good Australian manufacturer and haven’t looked back. Actually some of my favourite installs have been with sheer curtains, the impact they can have when done well can be huge.

In the magnificent region we are in, outdoor living is a massive part of our lives and culture. We have definitely seen a rise in the amount of people really wanting to make the most of their outdoor spaces. We can offer products to help stop weather, bugs, heat, cold and create privacy.

Motorisation and home automation is making a massive change to the industry as well. We are well experienced with motorisation and currently working on a few projects using Google Home, Pixie, Alexa and C-bus systems to control blinds.

We are currently working on a new showroom which we are hoping to have finished in the next couple of months but have only been working on it between our number one priority –our customers. the initial meeting with the client and measure up, follow the job right through the ordering process and into installation and completion. We often get calls from customers who have been told that what they want can’t be done. Usually just because it’s something a little outside the box or something that requires a little extra hard work. To me that’s like a red rag to a bull. I really enjoy looking at a job and telling the client we can get it done, when others have said no, like organising traffic

There are 3 in our team now. Dave started with us in October 2022, coming from a long career in the furniture industry. Having a pretty sound understanding of current trends and how colours and textures can impact a space he fit straight in. He has made some great relationships with clients and taken control of some large jobs over the last couple of years and takes a lot of pride in his work.

Now my beautiful wife Misti has joined the crew just this year. For now she is learning the ropes on installs and helping us keep on top of the paperwork but we have big plans for her in the near future.

How important is quality craftsmanship and customer service in your line of work?

Both are paramount in our industry. We are so lucky that the majority of our work comes from repeat clients and their recommendations to friends and family. I know that if we didn’t have excellent customer service, great products and expert installation skills we wouldn’t have the number of customers we do.

What’s next for Serenity Shutters? Are there any exciting new plans on the horizon?

What does a typical day look like for you running Serenity Shutters?

A typical day for us includes doing the school run, heading into our shed/office or straight to the job site if we’ve loaded up the day before. Meeting with new or returning clients, measuring, quoting and installing. We cover an area from Taree/ Wingham/Old Bar right up to South West Rocks/Kempsey/Hat Head and anywhere in between so we can spend a fair bit of time on the road out and about.

Is it just you or are there other team members that make up Serenity Shutters?

Yeah for sure. We are currently working on a new showroom which we are hoping to have finished in the next couple of months but have only been working on it between our number one priority – our customers.

There’s some training courses we have in our sights that will open us up to some new opportunities and refine some of our existing skills.

We are also looking into partnering with some local builders to offer some new products like opening louvre roofs which is pretty exciting for us.

Where can we find out more or get in touch?

Easiest way to get in touch is just give us a call or text on 0421 940 749. You can check out photos of our work and products on our website, or social media – Facebook and Instagram.

Thanks Rick.

In this climate, the role of an experienced real estate agent has never been more crucial. Agents who can confidently guide and communicate with sellers through realistic pricing strategies and execute strong marketing campaigns are the ones achieving the best results. The market remains price-sensitive, and properties listed at the right price are seeing strong buyer interest and high attendance at open homes. One of the biggest trends we’re noticing is that buyers are seeking low-risk, movein-ready healthy properties - homes that require little to no maintenance or repairs. Well-presented homes with realistic pricing are attracting strong interest, while those that need work or are priced too ambitiously are being overlooked. The longer a property remains on the market, the more buyers question its value - often resulting in a lower sale price than expected.

Another key trend is the continued presence of out-of-area buyers, particularly those relocating from Sydney. Many of these buyers work in the medical sector and are contributing to the town’s growing multicultural community. Their demand has helped keep the market stable here in Port Macquarie and its surrounds.

Despite economic shifts, Port Macquarie’s median house price remains stable at $850,000, a figure it has hovered around for

REAL ESTATE in review

As we step into March, the year is already moving at a rapid pace. Despite ongoing economic uncertainties, Port Macquarie’s real estate market has shown remarkable resilience. Buyers remain active, but they are more discerning than ever— savvy, price-conscious, and willing to walk away if they don’t see value in a property.

the past 12 months. Likewise, the median unit price sits at $596,250, reflecting continued demand for apartment living.

Luxury units in particular are experiencing exceptional sales results. This segment of the market appears to be acting as a vacuum, lifting and protecting the overall local market and maintaining a solid foundation for other properties in Port Macquarie. We expect to see more luxury unit developments occur across Port Macquarie.

However, we are seeing an increase in price adjustments and properties being withdrawn after extended periods on the market. This suggests that some sellers may need to reassess their price expectations to align with current market conditions.

The recent 0.25% cash rate reduction was a welcome move by the Reserve Bank, but its impact on the housing market has been somewhat limited so far. More action may be needed to stimulate buyer confidence and drive stronger momentum.

Since the start of the year, we've seen an increase in property appraisals. With more homeowners exploring their selling options, we anticipate a rise in listings over the next three months, increasing competition among sellers and more property for buyers to choose from.

For renters, the challenges continue. Demand for rental properties remains exceptionally

high, yet supply is failing to keep pace. As a result, rental values have surged by approximately 7-8% over the past 12 months. This trend underscores the ongoing need for more investment properties to help alleviate pressure in the rental sector.

My Final Thoughts:

Port Macquarie’s real estate market remains steady and resilient, driven by realistic pricing, strong buyer demand for well-presented homes and continued interest from Sydneybased buyers.

A federal election must be held by the 17th May – elections generally pause the real estate market a little. The betting markets are now tipping a coalition win – a coalition government generally supports negative gearing and should interest rates fall as expected this may increase investor demand and more properties on the market for renters to choose.

For sellers, pricing accurately and presenting a property well is key to securing a sale in today’s market. For buyers, opportunities remain—particularly for those who act quickly and recognise value when they see it.

With a potential increase in listings on the horizon, the next few months will be an important period for both buyers and sellers. So that’s my view on our current real estate market – any questions regarding real estate feel free to reach out to have a chat.

Elders Lifestyle Group, a trusted name in property services, is excited to announce the rebranding of its 21 o ces, spanning from Forster to Brunswick Heads, e ective 1 March 2025 - with the business now branded “Lifestyle.”

This significant change marks the culmination of eight years of exceptional growth, reflecting the group's evolving vision and commitment to providing unparalleled property services to the communities they operate in. Since its inception, the Lifestyle Group has experienced remarkable growth, expanding its footprint and reinforcing its reputation as a trusted real estate partner. With a dedicated team of professionals and a focus on exceptional client experiences, the company has consistently set new benchmarks in the industry.

The rebranding initiative represents a fresh, dynamic chapter in the Lifestyle Group's journey, reinforcing its continued commitment to offering outstanding experiences in real estate. With a 200+ workforce and 21 office locations now unified under a bold new identity, the group will continue to offer the same high standard of service that clients have come to expect over the years. With over 8,000 properties under management, 500 holiday managements and transacting over 1,100

sales totalling $830m in 2024, the exponential growth of the business has shaped a new and fresh way forward.

CEO & Founder, David Gray, expressed his excitement about the rebrand, stating, “This is a celebration of the growth and transformation that the Lifestyle Group has undergone over the past eight years. As we enter this new chapter, we remain committed to our core values of embracing change, a growth mindset, a relationship focus, and thriving on energy. Our clients have always been at the heart of everything we do, and we are deeply grateful for their ongoing loyalty. We look forward to continuing to work with them and to making an even greater impact in the communities we serve.”

As the Lifestyle Group evolved, it became clear that the time had come for us to establish our own identity. Our growth required something more unique — something that was distinctly ours.

& Client Experience, shared his enthusiasm about the rebrand’s significance, adding, “Our refreshed brand identity represents more than just a new look – it’s a reflection of our journey and our unwavering commitment to our clients. The new brand direction is designed to better connect with the diverse communities across our footprint while reinforcing the exceptional, personalised service that the Lifestyle Group is known for. We’re excited to continue building relationships with our clients and strengthening our presence as a trusted partner in their real estate journey.”

David Gray also remarked about the group's exit from one of Australia’s oldest real estate brands “Elders have been accommodating and professional in our parting of ways, and I wish them every success. I think there has been somewhat of an unspoken

understanding for a while now that we were rapidly growing to a size that no longer fit operating in a franchise model. As the Lifestyle Group evolved, it became clear that the time had come for us to establish our own identity. Our growth required something more unique — something that was distinctly ours”

The Lifestyle journey began with the acquisition of Elders Port Macquarie in 2017 - now the group’s headquarters - with this purchase including Elders Wauchope. In 2018, Dave added Elders Crescent Head, marking the beginning of what would soon be known as the “Elders Lifestyle Group.”

Over the years, the group expanded across the Mid North Coast and Northern NSW, acquiring additional Elders offices in Forster, Evans Head, and Grafton, along with three locations each in Camden Haven and the Macleay Valley. More recent acquisitions included Ballina and Lismore. Many other independent and franchise offices were rebranded as Elders Lifestyle Group, further strengthening their presence in the region.

complimenting our real estate business. At times it has posed a few ‘square peg, round hole’ moments under the framework of a franchise model, but we’ve stayed true to our brand, succeeded and grown across some amazing parts of this region. As a group, we’re so lucky to live and work in some of the best places on earth”

He noted “I’ve also picked up some great businesses managing holiday properties in some of the most unbelievable seaside spots like Wooli, Yamba and Brunswick Heads,

Jonathan Maggs commented “as a CEO, Dave has a level of dedication to his team and their own personal successes that I’ve not seen in my thirty year career, investing heavily in their personal and professional development. I’ve worked on the periphery with Dave since the inception of the Lifestyle Group - initially as a design consultant to ensure the front of house and workspaces of his offices had a consistency as they came onboard - and his passion for his brand and his people was clear to me from the start. He asked me to join his leadership team as Head of Brand & Client Experience a year ago to help make his dream of a Lifestyle brand a reality”. He noted that after nearly twenty years also leading marketing and integrating acquisitions for one of the world’s largest tech companies, IBM, this transformation has been a “most beautiful coming of age” for Dave’s brand.

“We are incredibly grateful for the unwavering

support we’ve received over the past eight years,” said Dave. “This rebrand is a testament to the growth and success we’ve achieved together with our clients, and we look forward to continuing our pledge to serve these wonderful communities with the same passion, dedication and expertise that has always defined our brand.”

The rebranding will include elegantly refreshed signage, innovative new marketing technology and a significantly reinvigorated digital presence. Clients can continue to expect the same level of personalised service and professionalism that has made the Lifestyle Group a trusted leader in real estate.

For more information about the rebrand and the services offered by Lifestyle Group, visit lifestylegroup.com.au or contact your local Lifestyle office.
