Julie Sechi

Julie Sechi has been an active member of the Coffs Coast community for many years now, and if you haven’t crossed paths with her in her role at The Shoreline, you may know her as a Councillor for the City of Coffs Harbour, or through other various community events or projects she has been a part of, and she doesn’t seem to be planning on slowing down any time soon!

i Julie. Can you share a bit about your background and connection to the Coffs Coast?

I came to Coffs Harbour for an extended holiday after spending the first 21 years of my life living on the Murray River and in Melbourne, Victoria. My parents and siblings had relocated here a few years earlier and as a young woman looking to forge my own way in the world I had decided to remain down south.

My holiday was in July, I was swimming in the ocean and remember thinking how warm the winter was and the different lifestyle living on the coast would create, so I made the decision to stay. I then settled here, working and enjoying all the Coffs Coast has to offer.

here in Coffs, can you tell us a bit about your role and what you enjoy about your work?

My approach is all about providing personalised service, where I take the time to understand each client’s unique needs, goals, and circumstances.

I’ve been fortunate to have raised three incredible sons here and they’ve had the privilege of growing up close to the beach and our big family, who mostly still live here. For me, I still feel this beautiful place has that living like you’re on holiday spirit, which I love.

You’re currently the Project Sales & Marketing Manager at The Shoreline

Moving into retirement living is a journey and the first part is a prompt that inspires connection to find out more. I’d like to think this nudge is the marketing and it helped create the start of a vision of their happiness living here at The Shoreline. The early stages of consultation is a lot about education for both those looking to come to The Shoreline and their family and or friends; the decision is often a collaborative one. The choices around moving into a retirement village often require an alternative mode of thinking, especially if they’ve never investigated options, a whole new perspective on the concept may be needed. Many people will comment on at least one thing they were surprised about, in a good way. Once they’ve chosen to make the move we stay connected throughout the whole planning, selling, sorting, reducing, packing, processes that happen prior to moving in. I do really enjoy getting to know people during this time, after all they end up being part of our wonderful community and I do still connect with them from time to time.

Continued over...

What led you to this role?

I’ve always loved real estate and had worked in the industry in residential sales for some time prior to moving into the retirement living sector. My transition into project sales of retirement villages saw me selling another substantial new development which sold out around the same time The Shoreline opportunity came my way, sothe timing was ideal. I felt it was meant to be as I’d always admired the project and the visual story of what was being created; it was just beautiful. I’ve now been here coming on two years and couldn’t be happier.

What have been some of the most challenging and rewarding aspects of your job?

I’ll focus on the rewarding aspects as every role has its challenges and I don’t like to give them airtime. The satisfaction for me always comes around the happiness we help create in people’s retirement life. Whether it’s the beautiful home and lifestyle they bring into being, the friendships they form within the community or their sense of security and independence, or something else that has bought them joy. It’s so gratifying to think I played a small

part in them realising their retirement dream.

What keeps you motivated in your work life?

I have a fantastic team of colleagues here at The Shoreline. We all have high standards and the one goal of helping to enrich our residents’ lives; plus we do have some fun along the way, and are surrounded by a beautiful environment to work in.

You’re also a councillor for The City of Coffs Harbour, when did this come about and what made you want to pursue this role on top of all that you’re already doing?

I WAS LOOKING FOR A NEW CHALLENGE AND HAD MORE TIME ON MY HANDS SO CONTRIBUTING FROM A COUNCIL PERSPECTIVE SEEMED LIKE A VERY WORTHWHILE CAUSE AND AN OPPORTUNITY FOR GROWTH FOR BOTH MYSELF AND THE COMMUNITY I WAS REPRESENTING.

As a member of the community looking into the upcoming Local Government elections mid 2021, I had some strong opinions around who I thought should lead our city. I had the greatest respect for this man, still do, and will always be grateful he gave me the opportunity to run on his team; we came in first and I was on council! After being re-elected last year, this is now my second term representing our community.

My role as a councillor came during a time of personal change. The main

one being that my boys had become young men and the responsibilities of motherhood were reducing greatly. I was looking for a new challenge and had more time on my hands so contributing from a council perspective seemed like a very worthwhile cause and an opportunity for growth for both myself and the community I was representing.

What have been some interesting or surprising aspects for you being on council? Has it been much of a learning curve so far?

Prior to being on council I thought I had reasonable knowledge on how the organisation functioned, the truth was I had very little understanding at all. I remember attending training sessions at the very beginning of my first term, and even some not long ago when this second term started, and still learning about the complex nature of the organisation.

What would you love to achieve during your time at council?

Coffs has immense potential for growth and to me the legacy you leave is important. It’s about representing the members of the community that have entrusted you with this role, in the way they would want our city.

What are your aspirations for the future? Where would you like to see yourself in the years ahead?

I’m quite goal orientated and would love to continue growing and learning professionally, which thankfully in both my current roles will remain a focus. With some travel and adventure on the personal horizon, I look forward to added growth and creating some new life stories along the way.

Thanks Julie.

IT’S ABOUT REPRESENTING THE MEMBERS OF THE COMMUNITY THAT HAVE ENTRUSTED YOU WITH THIS ROLE, IN THE WAY THEY WOULD WANT OUR CITY.

Tegan Hannaford is an incredible local dancer from Bellingen who went on to full time dance school at Brent Street in Sydney, and is now living out her dreams working in the industry she loves.

TEGAN Hannaford

Hi Tegan. Can you share a bit about your background and when you discovered your love of dance?

I grew up on a beautiful little farm on the river in Bellingen. I come from a family of musicians and people in the entertainment industry so my family home was one filled with music, banter, charades and dancing.

When do you think you realised this was something you wanted to pursue as a career?

I was at high school and I tore three ligaments in my ankle and was told that my injury wouldn’t heal and I wouldn’t dance again. My heart absolutely sank and I remember balling my eyes out in the waiting room. It was then I realised how much I truly loved dance and that it was something I couldn’t live without. A week later, I was in class sitting on a chair in my moon boot, learning all the routines.

After high school graduation I started working and travelling straight away. Throughout this time my mentor and teacher Tehani Carmen Vicario was taking me to see shows and dance workshops. I was a bit lost on what I wanted to do with my life. Being a bit directionless, on the spur of the moment I applied to join the army. I was planning on heading off the following year to go into training when I did a dance workshop on the Gold Coast and received a scholarship to a full time dance school, Brent Street. I was so excited at the opportunity to dance everyday that I gladly turned down the army application, packed my bags and with very little savings relocated to start my new life.

What were the early days of your dance journey like here on the Coffs Coast?

I didn’t start dancing until I was about 14 years old, but I was always an active child. I did martial arts from the age of 5 and received my black belt in Shotokan Karate by 10. But as I got a bit older I wanted to do what all my friends were doing, which at the time was

dancing. I remember doing my first Hip Hop class at Rivers Dance Centre and that was the beginning of me subjecting my family members to weekly performances in front of the TV. I would go to the Bellingen Youth Hub and use the free internet to download old VMA performances. Each year I wanted to do more classes. I started doing jazz and contemporary then joining the performance team and when that wasn’t enough I would learn from free tutorials off You Tube from all the big dancers and choreographers in LA.

You went to Brent Street Dance School in Sydney, what was that experience like? I had a wonderful yet eye opening experience at my full time dance school in Sydney. I learnt a lot of invaluable lessons and got an insight into the work ethic required to make it in this career. The point of full time dance is to make professional dancers, so the standard is very high in order to reflect the industry, it’s quite intense and can be a big shock for a lot of people. My first two weeks were an absolute blur, I didn’t come

from a very technical dance background so had to learn a lot, and fast. I would take “baby” ballet classes on the weekends for the whole first year of my training in order to catch up to the technical level of my peers, but what I lacked in technique I made up for in passion and tenacity. If you truly want to become a professional dancer the hard work is worth it, I also had the support of my incredible friends that made everything easier. If you are thinking of auditioning for full time dance school’s I’d recommend doing research on all the schools available and finding one that suits your needs the best.

Where are you now in your dance journey?

I’m at a really exciting place in my dance journey. I have had the opportunity to perform on live TV, movies, immersive theatre, TV shows, corporate spaces and music videos. I have had the privilege to work with Netflix, Paramount +, ABC, Sydney Mardis Gras, TIK TOK Awards, EMI Music and the Australian Museum to name a few. Earlier last year I had the honour of performing as a dancer in Sela Vai’s first full length dance show called “Mine”, which was an incredible experience. I also joined the cast of Richard Tanumi’s “Oh La La Cabaret”. My most recent job was at the Art Gallery of NSW opening up for the René Magritte Exhibit.

What are your goals or aspirations heading into the future?

There are so many things I still want to do and achieve. I want to join an Australian touring show and then an international show and move overseas for a bit. I’m still dedicated to my training, so am excited to be heading over to New York, LA and London later this year to learn from many of my idols. A big goal of mine is to continue to give back to the community that inspired, supported and raised me. I annually return to teach at Camp Creative in Bellingen, and would love to continue to share my experience and knowledge with more studios on the Coffs Coast. I wouldn't be where I am today if it wasn’t for people supporting me and I want to do the same for all aspiring creatives.  What advice would you give any other young dancers/performers from our region? If you have the passion and the drive there is truly nothing you can’t achieve. I would recommend training and learning in many different styles, take workshops, get a group of friends together and learn choreography online. It's important as artists that you support

I annually return to teach at Camp Creative in Bellingen, and would love to continue to share my experience and knowledge with more studios on the Coffs Coast.

art, go and watch as many events, live shows, performances, movies, TVs’ you can. I was so inspired by these things and found it a great way to stay motivated in times when times get hard. My favourite part of being a performer is the community around me. It's important to invest your time and energy in studios, mentors and peers that make you feel welcome, safe and valued. Not all dance spaces share the same values, so find a place that is right for you. And lastly, don't be afraid to reach out, I love nothing more than to share my knowledge and help aspiring performers achieve their dreams.

Our industry and everyone aspiring to be part of it has the ability to be inclusive, to create safe spaces, with warm values. When we have this place of acceptance and inclusion we can then do our best work. Dance is a community and a home and I feel very much part of its family and I am grateful for all of the relationships and connections.

Thanks Tegan.

Sue Merrick has a lifetime of experience when it comes to working with animals. She was the manager of the RSPCA here in Coffs Harbour for an incredible 26 years, making a name for herself as an excellent dog trainer and behaviour specialist. Sue has now moved on to privately training dogs with her business One Ear Up, specialising in training support dogs.

Hshare a bit about your background and what sparked your interest in working with animals?

As a baby I apparently shared my pram with two small family dogs which is a bit unusual. As a little girl I’d dress our dachshund in dolls clothes, pushing her around in a dolls pram, startling people when they peaked in expecting to see a doll, instead seeing a dachshund nose peeking out beneath a bonnet. I would walk the neighbourhood dogs after school, with their owners’ blessing and all off lead in a biggish pack, without issue.

I've worked with animals since I was fifteen years of age, both with dogs and breaking in horses in Victoria. Coming to Coffs Harbour in 1981, I’m continuing with horses mainly, but also training my own dogs to be wonderful, obedient and protective.

I'm comfortable around animals and can read and understand a dog's behaviour in most situations. Working for the RSPCA is all I wanted to do as a child.

What inspired you to join the RSPCA, and can you share some of the most rewarding moments from your 26 years as RSPCA Manager here in Coffs Harbour?

I’ve worked with animals since I was fi een years of age, both with dogs and breaking in horses in Victoria. Coming to Coffs Harbour in 1981, I’m continuing with horses mainly.

I began working for the RSPCA in 1991 when the Coffs Harbour shelter was built. The shelter became known for its ability to train and rehabilitate dogs and RSPCA NSW would send me problem dogs from other shelters. The success rate was high and they were re-homed quickly. Our dogs were homed all over Australia and we often received phone calls from people thanking us, saying the dog was the best they had ever owned, and that

is why I stayed there for over 26 years. To ensure a dog will have a great forever home it needs to be manageable, to walk nicely on lead, have basic good manners and to be social with people and other animals.

Can you tell us about One Ear Up? What motivated you to transition into training support animals?

My cat Bob, who I adored, was part of our training team. He was killed by a man in my street. That created a chain of events which made it psychologically impossible for me to recover from, leaving me with PTSD and unable to work for the society I once loved. It took a year before I wanted to do anything. One Ear Up was named after my wonderful dog Bindi.

I already had a name for training dogs at the RSPCA but now people could find me. I help people who are experiencing problem behaviours in their dog and have lost confidence in what they should do to rectify them.

Could you tell us a bit about your training process and how you match dogs to individuals in need?

I was contacted by some support agencies who had clients who were unable to control the dogs they had to enhance their lives. I work as a carer, taking clients out and training them how to handle a dog. I would begin by giving the client my fully trained dog Bindi or Ochre while I had their dog. This resulted in enjoyable outings, growing confidence in themselves, building a bond with their dogs and assisting contact with people whom they would never have spoken to before when out. The dogs become so good that they don’t just pass their PAT (Public Access Test) they go above and beyond. We often draw a crowd while training which is a great source of encouragement for the client.

How can support animals improve the lives of the people they assist? Are there any particularly memorable success stories

from your work with support dogs that you’d like to share?

My number one dog and sidekick Bindi passed away and I now have two young dogs; a Kelpie, Terra and a Miniature Dachshund, Lottie replacing Ochre who is almost retired. She will finish her career on Anzac Day in April, partnering with another support dog, a Labrador named Nutts to do something fabulous.

Another support dog named Elfy with his owner Sean has competed in obedience trick trials where he gained his Trick Starters title including two judges choice awards.

know about what you do and the animals you work with?

Another support dog named Elfy with his owner Sean has competed in obedience trick trials where he gained his Trick starters title including two judges choice awards. The confidence Sean has gained has led him to achieving a part time job.

There are so many small positives and improvements in everyone as they turn into confident dog handlers taking part in the world.

How can the community get behind your work and the use of support animals? What message would you like people to

We do experience a lot of interference from the public while training. People often engage with the dogs without asking or addressing us. We would like people to understand our dogs are working. When a dog is wearing a vest it is working, and just as we wouldn’t engage with a guide dog, these dogs are the same. They are trained to ignore everything going on around them, including other people and dogs. They must concentrate on their handlers. We are happy to speak to people and we like people engaging with the client leaving the dogs to concentrate on their job.

Where can we find out more or get in touch?

I can always be contacted on Facebook: One Ear Up.

Thanks Sue.

AIDEN

V INE

AIDEN VINE IS A PHOTOGRAPHER WHO SPECIFICALLY WORKS WITH FILM OVER DIGITAL, ENJOYING THE ANTICIPATION OF WAITING FOR THE FILM TO BE DEVELOPED, THE PAYOFF OF THE FILM’S COLOURS AND THE CHALLENGE OF CAPTURING THE RIGHT MOMENT.

e moment I loaded a roll into that camera and hit the shu er it was certain that I was about to spend the next 3 years of my life fixated on it.

My art teacher in year 11 recommended me a work by the Australian artist Trent Parke –“Minutes to Midnight”. This was (and still is) my greatest inspiration for photography. How does using film influence your approach to capturing an image compared to digital photography? Shooting exclusively on film has definitely refined my need to spend time examining the environment before taking the shot, the knowledge that you’re dealing with an expensive roll of material with 36 shots forces you to slow down and consider if a frame would be ‘worth it’.

Of course, this is rewarded with beautiful colours and tones that just can’t be digitally replicated; but also a discipline of knowing when and where to take a shot.

Hey Aiden, Can you tell us about your journey into photography? What sparked your interest in film photography specifically?

When I was moving into year 11, one of my friends recommended me a You Tube channel that focused on a lot of analog photography, reviewing cameras, testing film stocks, the whole bunch. The aesthetic and general workflow really resonated, so I ended up buying a Pentax K1000 on Ebay. The moment I loaded a roll into that camera and hit the shutter, it was certain that I was about to spend the next 3 years of my life fixated on it.

Can you walk us through your typical workflow when working with film, from conceptualisation to developing?

My workflow primarily consists of just throwing myself into somewhere public and taking photos, from anywhere between Coffs or somewhere on Waterfall Way up in Dorrigo.

I don’t shoot completely sporadically, I usually set a ‘theme’ to stick to before I head out.

When I first arrive on site, I spend about 10-15 minutes assessing hot-spots, metering for light and getting used to what’s going on around the area. After that, it’s pretty simple - just get out the camera and walk. Once I’m finished, I head home and develop my B/W film for about an hour and let the negatives dry. With colour film, I save it up for a couple of months and send it down to DoFilm Lab in Sydney, but with my B/W, I send it to a local friend who scans it (shout out to Mick).

Continued over...

Do you have a favourite film stock or camera, and why do you prefer it?

A favourite film stock is pretty hard to pick, they all have their own personalities and quirks that can fit different occasions perfectly.

For convenience and practicality, I really like Ilford FP4+ and Fomapan 400 for B/W. Kodak’s 250D (ECN-2) motion picture film stock is incredibly versatile and offers balanced colours and latitude.

FP4+ has beautiful contrast and grain, with a really wide latitude and great response to pushing. I can also recommend Portra 160, Fuji C200 and Ilford PanF 50.

What has been your most memorable travel photography experience, and what made it stand out?

Out of Brisbane, Melbourne and Cambodia, my favourite travel experience (based on photography) had to have been in Melbourne.

with friends, family or by themselves. The relationship between people and their environment gave way to some really interesting compositions and scenarios which I’ve never seen anywhere else. The community of other street photographers there was really nice to see - many were kind enough to show me their photos, camera setups and works on instagram.

My workflow primarily consists of just throwing myself into somewhere public and taking photos from anywhere between Coffs and Waterfall Way in Dorrigo.

Melbourne and her people had such an authentic, unapologetic personality that gave me so much sustenance to photograph. People were out doing their own things, either

How do you decide which moments to capture when you only have a limited number of exposures?

I just photograph what looks good to me, the rate at which I shoot my film is purely dependent on that. There’s a kind of resonance I feel when a composition lines up, and more often than not, it turns out to be a nice photo. In those instances, I can run through many frames without being totally conscious of it. In some

scenarios, I can take 3-5 shots with different angles, perspectives, etc. but being overpretentious with calculating exposures can sometimes lead to a bit of burnout. I just keep things simple and take photos when it feels right, there isn’t an absolute curriculum when it comes to preserving film for the right moments in my opinion.

What's one of your more memorable photographs and why?

I recently went to Cambodia with a church group and took 10 rolls of ColorPlus with me. I distinctly remember getting to Angkor Wat, walking up some stars to the top of the main temple and seeing some monks walking down opposite me. Half way to the summit, I grabbed my Pentax K1000 out, focused on the subject and took the frame. For two weeks after, I could just remember the anticipation of getting that single photo back - was it exposed right, was it in focus? Some shots are often greater in concept than in practice, but I thank God that this photo wasn’t one of them.

What have been the biggest lessons photography has taught you so far?

Rather than typing a paragraph, it’s probably easier to list it!

1. Shooting film forces a kind of ‘trigger discipline’ - don’t underestimate how quickly 36 exposures can disappear.

3. Metering light. Most film cameras are fully manual, so you need to know how to balance shutter speed and aperture, especially within a moment’s notice.

I just photograph what looks good to me and the rate at which I shoot my film is purely dependent on that.

2. Understanding how film ‘sees’ light. Film loves light, it’s better to overexpose by a couple of stops than to underexpose. Highlights are preserved well, but shadows often become muddy if they’re too dark.

4. The value of a dollar. $20 for a roll of film isn’t exactly cheap.

Are there any dream projects or collaborations you’d love to work on?

I’ve had ideas for many projects in the past, mostly revolving around documenting the lifestyle, emotions and interaction between mankind and their environment.

A project by Mike Brodie – titled “Period of Juvenile Prosperity” introduced me to the world of train surfing in America and that just moved something in me. I really wanted to just grab a camera, a bunch of film and a backpack, head over to Europe and train surf between countries, only to end up in some remote town in Russia.

Where do you see yourself taking your photography career in the next few years?

Due to the cost of living, the price of film expanding every year and lack of available time, it’s definitely going to be something I’ll have to whole-heartedly dedicate my life to (which I’m more than happy to do). I might expand horizons into wedding photography, portraiture and other commission work before I take the leap into full independent work. It’ll be good for experience and developing my personal ‘eye’.

Thanks Aiden

for classic crispy chips a er a day spent catching waves or rays on sunny Sawtell Beach? Fries On The Side have got you covered!

i Michelle, can you tell us about the journey that led you to open your takeaway shop?

I’ve always loved food and cooking, even from a young age, where I started experimenting with cakes, chocolates, and pastries. This passion grew over time as I enjoyed the creativity and joy of sharing food with others. After moving from Sydney to Coffs Harbour in 2019, I realised that my ultimate goal was to run my own

business - preferably in the food industry. I spent several months exploring different opportunities in the area, and in July 2020, I found the perfect location in Sawtell. I felt that the community here would appreciate fresh, high-quality food, and I was eager to bring something new to the area.

I wanted to create a space where people could enjoy food that’s both delicious and made with care, whether they’re grabbing a quick bite or enjoying a casual meal.

I’ve always been passionate about cooking food that’s both comforting and exciting, and that’s what inspired me to focus on this concept. I wanted to create something that reflects my love for fresh, high-quality ingredients, while also offering dishes that are quick, satisfying, and easy to enjoy on the go. Sawtell, with its relaxed beachside vibe, felt like the perfect place for a concept that blends familiar classics with a modern twist. I also noticed a demand for a takeaway option that still emphasises quality and creativity - something that stands out from typical fast food. Ultimately, I wanted to create a space where people could enjoy food that's both delicious and made with care, whether they’re grabbing a quick bite or enjoying a casual meal.

Do you have any signature dishes or customer favourites that you’d like to highlight?

What inspired you to choose this type of cuisine or food concept for your shop?

Our customer favourites are definitely the classic fish and chips, which have been a hit since day one, but recently, our loaded fries have skyrocketed to the top of the list! One dish that’s got a lot of love is our

cheeseburger-loaded fries. We take crispy, golden fries and top them with seasoned beef, melted cheese, pickles, and all the flavours of a cheeseburger - it's a fun and indulgent twist that our customers really enjoy. The combination of textures and flavours makes it a crowd-pleaser. What’s great is that these dishes aren’t just popular - they’re also a great way for us to get creative with the menu, and I’m always looking for new variations or spins on these favourites.

How do you manage the daily operations, from sourcing ingredients to maintaining quality?

Before opening Fries On The Side, I worked for 20 years as a supply chain and procurement professional. I began my career in the Woolworths Buying Office in 1998, and since then, I've worked across various industries including airlines, liquor, aggregates, and chemicals. This background gave me extensive experience in sourcing, planning, production, and quality control - skills that are highly transferable to managing a food business. While I hadn't worked in casual dining specifically, the principles of ensuring a steady supply of quality ingredients, maintaining cost efficiency, and overseeing production are all part of my

core skill set.

In my daily operations, I use my procurement expertise to build strong relationships to ensure we’re sourcing the best ingredients and products. It’s all about being organised, proactive, and focused on the details, from managing stock levels to ensuring each meal meets the highest standards of quality.

The online ordering platform has been essential, especially in the current climate, as it makes it easier for customers to place orders at their convenience. It’s expanded our reach significantly, allowing us to tap into a broader customer base. Technology has been a key driver in improving efficiency and enhancing the customer experience.

What has been your experience with the impact of technology, such as online ordering and delivery apps?

I honestly don’t know how I would be able to maintain or grow my business without our POS system and online ordering partner. These technologies have been game-changers for us. The POS system allows for quick and accurate order processing, reducing errors and speeding up service during busy times. It also gives us valuable insights into sales trends and inventory, which helps with planning and decision-making.

Are there any plans for expansion or new offerings in the future?

I’m excited to let you know we have our new sandwich bar coming in mid Feb! The staff and I are going to be taking turns having some much-needed time off early Feb, then back to it with our exciting new offering.

How can we get in touch?

We are located at 70 First Avenue, Sawtell, just north of the RSL. You can order online at our website friesontheside.com.au or download our app. For catering orders, you can email us at yum@friesontheside.com.au

Thanks Michelle.

BEN H ALL

The Bu erfly Effect is coming to The Hoey Moey on Sunday the 9th Feb, so we had a chat with drummer Ben Hall about what it feels like to be celebrating the 20th anniversary of “Begins Here” and what we can expect from this show.

Hi Ben. After the success of your tour celebrating the 20th anniversary of “Begins Here”, how does it feel to gear up for another run of shows?

It's very exciting, but a little bit daunting, because we haven't done a run of this nature for a really long time.

We will be seeing you at the Hoey Moey in Coffs Harbour on the 9th Feb, what can we expect from this show?

Back in the early days when we had nothing much except music, we would often do seven week laps around the country, but as we’ve settled with families we usually try and keep it to 3 or 4 weeks at a time. It's usually capital cities, not really going anywhere off the beaten track, so this will be a little bit different, which I love. It's great to be able to go back to these places and play, because we played Coffs numerous times in the past, at the Plantation Hotel and the Hoey Moey. It will be so nice to be able to go back there, and the show is actually selling beyond my expectations. It’s looking like it will potentially sell out, so that’s excellent and so exciting!!

Well, if you haven't seen us for a while, there's a few more grey hairs, and a couple of us have got no hair left at all. That's not really painting a great picture is it..?. Haha. We're playing the “Begins Here” album in its entirety, from beginning to end, and it's actually really fun. Initially when we talked about doing it I wasnt' very excited, not in terms of the tour, just the idea of playing the album from start to finish. But actually getting to work on it and bringing it together has been really fun, and a good chance to reflect on what we were 21 years ago, because it's a bit of a time capsule. We were so lucky to have landed all those years ago the way we did, so to go back and listen to certain things, you appreciate them more looking back.

How do these regional gigs differ from some of the bigger city performances, and what excites you most about them? It's more personal, and I actually think

we're a better band in the tighter spaces if I’m honest. I think we're much more of a rock band, disappointingly, than we are a stadium band! There’s just something about the vibe that comes when everyone, including the crowd, is quite close.

Something I really wasn't aware of until we first played a big outdoor festival is that when you’re up on the main stage it’s actually really hard to hear much. It's quite weird, because as a punter it's really loud, but when I'm on stage at those shows it can be hard to feel the vibe. It's hard to explain, but these smaller shows, when the ceiling isn’t too far away and people aren't too far away, are my favourite.

Your fanbase has stuck with you through hiatuses and comebacks. How does that support influence the band?

To be honest it's the only reason we probably continue doing it. I mean, it's fun, but it's also hectic to fit it in amongst children and jobs. We all work full-time and we’re self managed, so we don't have a booking agency. Everything is done

internally so it's kind of tricky, but those experiences, connecting with people, is what keeps us going. It's really quite nice to go back and have a beer with people that were coming to the shows when there was no one there. It just reminds you to not take any of it for granted, because there were those times when there were literally five people there and I could have a beer with them afterwards and then the next time you come back, those people would come and bring friends and it would build quite organically. I think that is also one of the reasons that people still come, because there is that relationship there. Looking back on the making of “Begins Here”, what stands out most about that time in your career? How did it feel to

revisit it for the anniversary tour?

It's really hard to explain, but these smaller shows, when the ceiling isn’t too far away and people aren't too far away, are my favourite.

It's really nice to revisit it. It actually was probably the first time ever in our career that I really stopped and admired the other guys in a way that I hadn't at the time. We haven’t always been a band that got on really well, so when we were creating music there was always a huge amount of friction for whatever reason. We would be working on releasing an album, and it would be stressful, so to actually get through all that and still be able to put it out and then for people to enjoy it and want more, was quite amazing. I actually have respect for the other guys, not that it wasn’t there before, but I had probably never really stopped to have a good look at.

about balancing classic tracks with newer songs during live performances? Are there any songs that always get a big reaction from the crowd?

Fans love the mix of nostalgia and new material in your setlists. How do you go

Well for this tour we play the album through and then we play another 30 minutes or so worth of the catalogue as well. It's Interesting on this one because a lot of the songs we would never have played live before. There’s a song at the end of the album, (that I think maybe could've even been left off), and there was a moment where basically we stopped playing and the crowd just continued to sing it. So for a song that is at the end of the album and probably could've been a B side in my opinion, it was remarkable to have that experience. It's about the experience of people appreciating songs that they’ve never heard live before and also the old staples they’ve probably heard a fair few times. I think if there is a song that gets a good reaction every time I would say it's probably One Second Of Insanity, or Reach (but that's not on this album).

i ladies. How did the idea for Mutton come about, and what inspired you to combine music, comedy, and feminist punk cabaret into one powerhouse act?

SOB: We grew up with 70’s punk and feminism - it’s in our DNA, so as menopausal feminists with a lot to say, we thought starting a punk band at our age - as we become ‘invisible’would be a great way to defy the invisibility of older and aging women. Punk is the perfect medium for resistance and protest and doesn’t ask for a lot of skill. It’s about the message, the attitude and the noise, so a perfect vehicle for us ‘emerging’ aging rock stars to say a thing or two; as is comedy and cabaret - so we followed our passions and Mutton was born.

Can you share a bit about your backgrounds? How do you bring your individual talents together to create the magic of Mutton?

SOB: We both have long backgrounds in theatre, cabaret and performance, that is actually how we met. GG’s specialties are in puppetry and dance, my focus has been on circus and physical theatre. We both have extensive experience in producing, making and touring shows nationally and internationally so when GG and I realised we both had long held dreams of starting a band, we decided to go for it. It was a kind of moment of - if not now, when? If not us, who? GG was passionate about drums, so learning bass became my new thing and hopefully an activity that keeps the dementia at bay.

You have a show coming up at the Bellingen Memorial Hall, what can we expect from this show?

SOB: You can expect a pair of old punk clowns having a great time making some noise, making each other laugh and making the audience laugh through our bickering, witty banter and satirical songs. When we first started out, we had some bastardised covers of

Simone O’Brien and Gabrielle Griffin are Mu on The Duo; two sassy, honest and funny-as-hell women over 50, who are bringing their clever musical comedy act to the Bellingen Memorial Hall on Thursday 13th Feb!

famous 2 piece bands (think The White Stripes) but now we have extended our repertoire to include original songs with themes familiar to menopause - low libido, online dating, low tolerance for fools - amongst other delights. Expect explicit feminist material, colourful language, and a celebration of women. We have a 20 - 30 minute set before the The Church of the Clitori performance. This show is a double bill with The Church of the Clitori. Can you share a bit more about them and why you work so well together?

SOB: The Church of the Clitori is a duo of body positive satirists from the Illawarra who have created an original production that calls the audience to worship and to celebrate the clitoris as a true path to salvation. A show that literally takes feminine power out of the box. Think ‘Sex in the City’ meets ‘Book of Mormons’ where you can rejoice in thoughtprovoking sermons from the Mound, enjoy a gentle touch on science, and hear about

SIMONE

pleasure and self-love. Mutton is a perfect fit as we are all using music, cabaret and comedy to make cheeky, thought provoking, unashamed feminist work. The Church of the Clitori brings the unique perspective of two women of colour to the satirical mix. Your performances blend raunchy humour with sharp social commentary. How do you balance the comedy with the deeper messages you want to convey?

SOB: Comedy is such a great way to get one’s message across, so we love using satire, irony and joy to make light of topics relevant to us and hopefully other audience members. While the show is about menopausal womens’ experiences, we believe that there are themes that are relevant to most of us - the dire state of the world; frustrations with a feeling of powerlessness; love lives, relationships, dating anxiety. All this amongst a celebration of what we can do - come together in the community of an audience in a live setting, laugh, and talk together, share experiences, have a dance. Being joyful is a radical act, we encourage joy first and foremost. Your songs and banter focus on themes like low sex drive, online dating, and life after divorce. Why do you think it’s important to tackle these topics openly and unapologetically?

WE ARE DELIGHTED TO BE TOURING WITH THE CHURCH OF THE CLITORI, AND WE HOPE THAT LEADS TO OTHER GIGS WITH THEM.

GG: Like most women approaching 60, we are tired of being shamed for natural processes like aging or menopause. We have listened to so many friends talking about these topics, and have lived through them ourselves. Knowing that the ‘personal is political’ means we have chosen to shine lights on what is usually whispered about, and with plenty of lived experience and hard-won wisdoms, we are privileged to be able to offer up advice and universal stories.

What’s next for Mutton? Are there any new projects, collaborations, or performances you’re excited about?

GG: We are delighted to be touring with the Church of the Clitori, and we hope that leads to other gigs with them. We are so proud of embedding Auslan into our show, working with deaf consultants to make it the best it can be, so we plan to pitch the show to various festivals such as Fringes or queer festivals, as it will be a unique creative product. We are totally open to being pitched at as well, so don’t be shy, if you have a good offer! If you could leave one lasting impression or message through your work with Mutton, what would it be?

GG: Don’t settle for less than you deserve, nor apologise for your desires. Follow your dreams, apply yourself to your passions, demand 50% support at home, equal pay at work, and refuse to be shamed by the patriarchy for

being a woman. Find support and camaraderie with your coven of girlfriends, and invest in those platonic relationships to the very end. Also, don’t be afraid to swear a bit, and I personally thoroughly recommend taking up an instrument you’ve always wanted to play, no matter how old you are: music is joy.

Where can we find out more, get tickets to the show or get in touch?

GG: We have a fabulous website: muttontheduo.com, and there’s a contact page there. We are also on Facebook and Instagram as Mutton the Duo. Show tickets are available from the Bellingen Memorial Hall website for Feb 13, 7-10pm. Dress up with the girls, bring along the fellas if you want to of course, and get ready for some female-centered fun, pleasure, and celebrations.

Thanks Ladies.

TIMMS

ARTISToftheMONTH

Mitchell Timms is an artist who grew up in the Bellinger Valley and went on to study at the National Art School in Sydney. Recently returning to the Coffs Coast, he hopes to connect with, and contribute to the local arts community. His talent combined with this training and his unique style will definitely make him one to watch.

Hi Mitchell. Can you share a bit about your background and your introduction to art?

I’ve always had an instinctual desire to make marks and visually express my ideas, translating thoughts when words failed me.

Growing up in the Bellingen Shire, my natural surroundings were deeply rooted in my practice. The landscapes, organic forms, and natural world around me became central to my work.

Throughout school, my drawing ability was consistently recognised by my teachers. In high school, being advanced a year in visual arts was the first time I truly felt my ability was acknowledged. It was in Year 12 that my art teacher encouraged me to reconsider my nursing career and instead pursue art, a pivotal moment that led me to study at the National Art School. For me, creating art is an opportunity to nurture a childlike curiosity and playfulness, qualities I hope to carry with me throughout my career/ further art practice.

What are your favourite mediums to create with?

Drawing is at the foundation of my creative practice. The ability to capture objects, people, and places on a 2-dimensional surface is a timeless tradition that continues to amaze and inspire me.

It’s something I can always improve upon and is easily accessible and portable, allowing me to carry it with me wherever I go. Being a proficient draftsman also gives me confidence in other mediums, as the core principles cross over into other ways of making.

Printmaking, particularly etching, has been a major focus of my studies. As my studio major during my Bachelor of Fine Arts, I’ve worked extensively within the printmaking field, dedicating significant time to exploring the methodical nature of etching and discovering techniques that align with my own creative approach. Unfortunately, etching requires a studio space and press, which I currently don’t have access to - so I’m open to any opportunities where I can collaborate with someone who has the facilities to support this aspect of my practice. I enjoy being flexible across artistic mediums; allowing myself not to be restricted by one, as each material has its own unique quality. I look forward to branching into new ways of making now that I’ve completed my studio major

(possibly painting, sculpture or ceramics).

How would you describe your style?

My style combines traditional, skill-based techniques with a distinctive illustrative approach. I focus heavily on detail and line work, which allows me to create intricate imagery that encourages personal and subjective interpretations. Influenced by my rural upbringing, my work often explores organic and anatomical forms, weaving elements of world-building and imagination into each piece. Much of my imagery is drawn from imagination, a practice rooted in a childlike approach to creativity that I’ve carried into my work today. Whimsical scenes and subject matter frequently contrast with grotesque themes, sometimes bordering on the unsettling, creating a dynamic interplay between the playful and the disturbing. Could you tell us a bit about your art studies and where you’re at in your journey now?

I studied a Bachelor of Fine Arts at the National Art School in Sydney, which was a significant change from my childhood in the Bellingen Valley. The course itself was a balance of both theoretical learning and practical studio work, allowing me to expand my artistic vocabulary and interact with unfamiliar concepts and ideas.

While studying, I worked as a support worker, using my passion for the arts to help improve others’ quality of life by exploring creative ways of making together in a supportive environment. Returning home, I’m eager to contribute to the creative spaces in the area, connect with fellow artists, and explore new opportunities within the arts community - possibly starting my own en plein air sketching group!

I’m very fortunate to have studied art in a professional manner, though I’m conflicted by the notion that art is often viewed as a luxury, one that isn’t accessible to everyone. What is your process like when creating an artwork?

My image-making comes from a somewhat subconscious place, where I loosely sketch ideas, letting them merge together into cohesive compositions. It’s a process of amalgamating and morphing thoughts, drawing upon a bank of things seen, read, and told. I allow myself to wallow in inspiration, both fantastical and theoretical. My love for anatomy, developed through extensive observational sessions and studying anatomy books, gives me the foundation to draw freely without references. There’s a certain purity in creating this way, as my knowledge is filtered through me, rather than directly from external sources. Are there any themes or ideas that you particularly like to explore in your works?

In my work, I often explore the relationship between the natural world and more fantastical elements, playing with the notion that we are all of natural origin. I challenge the idea that nature needs to be conquered, instead presenting it as a space of interconnectedness and oneness. This underlying theme is reflected in the morphic quality of my pieces, where forms shift and meld together. A key part of my practice is juxtaposing natural and realistic forms with more supernatural or bizarre imagery. This contrast fuels the playfulness in my work, while also creating deep, nuanced undertones that can be interpreted in multiple ways depending on the viewer’s perspective.

I’m drawn to children’s literature that balances lightheartedness with deeper, often more philosophical themes, works that encourage both simplicity and complexity. Shaun Tan’s writing is a great example of this, where the surface is accessible, but beneath it, there’s an exploration of human experience.

Have you been involved in any exhibitions or community projects, or would you like to in the future?

I’ve had the opportunity to be involved in several exhibitions during my time at the National Art School, including curating and installing my own group show titled Quarter-life Crisis in 2024. I was also honoured to be named a finalist in the 2024 Mosman Youth Art Prize, an experience of recognition that helped to deepen

my confidence in my practice. Moving forward, I’m excited to continue pursuing opportunities to exhibit my work and collaborate with other artists, hopefully building a local presence - not looking to slow down yet!

Where would you like to take your art practice over the next few years?

In the coming years, I’m focused on continuing to work within my passions, particularly illustration and printmaking, ideally taking it to the next step and pursuing art as a career in some way or another. I’m also eager to contribute to the local art community by potentially running classes and helping others explore their creativity.

Looking ahead, I’m interested in travel, whether through residencies or further courses, to expand my skills and deepen my practice through new experiences and perspectives.

Where can we view your work or get in touch?

As an emerging artist, I’m in the process of building my online presence, primarily through Instagram, where I post my work as a sort of digital portfolio. I’m always open to connections, whether through social media or more direct outreach, from those interested in my practice or potential opportunities

Humans Made by

How are you feeling about all your stuff?

Clothes, furniture, music, homewares, food.

Is it getting a bit ‘greige’ (a kind of grey-beige), generic, A.I. generated? The more we allow algorithms make our choices, the narrower our world becomes. We are complex, multifaceted living beings with diverse interests, tastes and needs.

The more we click online the less diversity we will get as the algorithms take over. Are you sick of seeing the same things over and over when you shop? Not only online but in the big franchise stores?

I love the feeling of things made and designed by humans. Especially when they are made from natural materials, made with care and made to last. Not only do they tend to be more

unique, they have a feeling. They just feel… better, warmer, loved?

Next time you come across something made with human hands, stop for a moment. Hold it and see if you can sense a feeling.

It is a bit like real, live music compared to A.I. generated. Sure, the generated stuff is amazing and clever but does it have a soul?

Support the human makers of art, music, food, clothes and homewares. We will miss it if we lose it.

Harbourside Markets is a great place to find stuff with a story and a soul. With a philosophy of ethical and fair-trade, locally made, and locally grown at Harbourside Markets you can escape the ‘greige’ and celebrate what makes our region unique.

Harbourside Markets is held every Sunday from 8am to 2pm near our beautiful, historic Jetty in Coffs Harbour.

MOGUL BEER

Nestled in our vibrant community, MOGUL BREWERY IS MORE THAN JUST A PLACE TO GRAB A COLD ONE; it’s a celebration of culture, craftsmanship and local talent.

Founded over a decade ago by Dave, who began brewing in his garage, Mogul has evolved from humble beginnings to a thriving local business.

Dave’s first creation, the Hammered Auctioneer pale ale, showcased his passion for brewing and quickly became a crowd favourite. Today, Mogul offers an impressive range, including lager, ginger beer, IPAs and a highly touted raspberry sour. They also serve up wine and soft drinks for those who don't fancy a beer.

One of the most striking features of Mogul Brewery is its inviting atmosphere. The cosy taproom, adorned with midcentury décor and comfortable seating,

creates a welcoming space for everyone, from families, tradies and friends gathering after work.

Wedding

and events

Imogen recently married the love of her life, Mathew, at a local venue , The Link, on New Years Eve and they were surrounded by their loving families and friends. We wanted to know more..

Congratulations on your wedding- how did you and Mat meet?

Thank you so much! Mathew and I first met when we were around 14, but it wasn’t until a couple of years later when we were about 16, that we started dating. I can’t recall all of the details of how we got together, but

I do remember that it didn’t take us long into seeing each other to claim the official boyfriend/girlfriend title. We’ve been pretty much inseparable since.

Immy, what is yours and Mat’s connection to the Coffs Coast?

I was born and raised in Coffs, however Mat didn't move here until he was about 11. It still feels like home for us and we have really

learnt to appreciate it as we have grown up and don’t have the coast on our back door like we used to.

worked with to create your special day? We were so fortunate to work with some amazing vendors and had incredible support from our family and friends who truly went above and beyond to make our day special. Our beautiful marriage celebrant, Sam Dawson from Married by Sam, made everything so easy. Mathew and I were both dreading the public speaking element of the ceremony; however she really made us feel like we were the only people there.

Graham and Kylie at The Link went above and beyond to ensure every li le detail Mathew and I envisioned for our wedding was brought to life.

What made you choose your venue, can you tell us more?

To be honest we weren’t fussed on having the wedding in Coffs, however once Graham (my now father in law) showed us around the The Link we knew that it would be spectacular. Graham and Kylie at The Link went above and beyond to ensure every little detail Mathew and I envisioned for our wedding was brought to life. Their dedication and expertise in planning, organising, and running the venue made the day run seamlessly; it was perfect.  Who were some of the businesses you

Jeremy from Jeremy Becker Creative captured everything so beautifully, with his candid and documentary-style photos. He brought our day to life in such a personal way. James from Back Deck Dinners provided the most delicious canapés and a family-style dinner that everyone raved about - the food was a real highlight as well as some tasty lychee martinis thanks to The Lane Way Events.

A dear friend of mine, Lucy James, who runs a small business via instagram @Settlepettal, did all of the flowers for us. She and I have known each other since we were about 5 years old, so it made the floral arrangements even more special. My sister-in-law, Abigail and her Mum also played a huge part, baking an incredible

amount of sourdough to accompany the meals which was incredible.

And, of course, we had our closest friends and family helping us every step of the way, particularly in the year leading up to the wedding, but especially the week before.

From tying hundreds of ribbons around candles to designing and printing out table menus and keeping me sane, they were an absolute lifeline in getting everything ready. We couldn’t have pulled it off without themit really was the collaboration of all the people we love and I think that’s why it turned out so beautifully.

What was the favourite part of your day?

I don’t have any particular favourite moment;  it was all such a beautiful and relaxed day. I am thankful that Jeremy, our photographer, convinced us into doing a ‘First Look’, because it really allowed us to spend as much time as possible catching up with our close friends and family and I really think that's what all weddings should prioritise.

What advice do you have for couples getting married in 2025?

I'm definitely not a wedding expert, however I am glad that Mathew and I stuck to keeping things really simple and uncomplicated. We focused our budget on what truly mattered to us and avoided the unnecessary expenses that are often tied to weddings and I think It turned out just fine.

Thanks for sharing Immy.

I was privileged to sit down with esteemed Celebrant Wendy Haynes, as she marks an impressive 30 years in the industry. Wendy is a highly respected figure in our profession, inspiring and mentoring countless celebrants, including myself. Her multifaceted background as a mindfulness practitioner, facilitator, and communicator, combined with her exceptional ability to cra meaningful stories and hold sacred spaces, has earned her a reputation for warmth, empathy, and kindness.

Wendy, what inspired you to become a marriage celebrant, and what motivated you to continue in this role for 30 years? In 1992, at a Sydney Registry Office, I spontaneously raised my glass at a friend’s wedding and wished them love, laughter, and happiness. The room cheered, and the registrar suggested I become a celebrant. Inspired, I applied and was appointed in 1995. Since then, I’ve been privileged to listen to countless love stories and create ceremonies that reflect each couple’s journey. Their joy and my connection to the couples and families have been my greatest motivation.

How have you seen the wedding industry change over the past three decades?

Technology like social media, remote meetings and livestream have made it easier to connect with couples and families. Societal changes, such as recognising same-sex marriages and embracing diverse cultural traditions, have also redefined what’s possible. I feel

there’s a stronger focus now on love stories, sustainability, and meaningful connections. The rise in the number of celebrants has brought both opportunities and challenges to the industry.

What have been some of the most significant challenges you’ve faced as a marriage celebrant, and how did you overcome them?

I feel there’s a stronger focus now on love stories, sustainability, and meaningful connections.

Practical challenges, like dealing with technical glitches or watching a north coast storm to see if it would clear before a 3pm ceremony, certainly fostered my ability to adapt and problem solve quickly. Managing difficult family tensions and navigating sensitive ceremonies have been, at times, hard, yet prompted me to continually develop my skills in empathy and communication.

You are well known as a wedding

celebrant as well as a funeral celebrant and find this just as rewarding... Being a funeral celebrant is an incredible privilege as I guide and support people through one of life’s hardest moments. Witnessing the strength of families and communities coming together during these times makes this work as meaningful and rewarding as my role in wedding celebrancy.

You have also been a mentor, teacher and facilitator, can you tell us about this facet of your career. Mentoring aspiring celebrants, self-publishing industry books, and for over two decades offering celebrant training, have been immensely fulfilling parts of my career. I’ve enjoyed sharing knowledge, fostering collaboration, and encouraging others to find their unique voice as celebrants. These roles have deepened my passion for this work, supported my own growth and strengthened

my connections within the celebrant community.

What advice would you give to couples who are planning their wedding? Plan a wedding that reflects your shared values and story, focusing on what truly matters to you as a couple. Stay flexible, knowing plans may shift, and choose a celebrant who resonates with your vision…and who you can laugh with. Above all, enjoy the process, cherish the moments, and always keep in sight, that this celebration is about your connection to each other.

Above all, enjoy the process, cherish the moments, and always keep in sight, that this celebration is about your connection to each other.

What are some common mistakes couples make when planning their wedding, and how can they avoid them? Two avoidable mistakes are choosing outdoor venues that may be stunning in good weather but uncomfortable in bad weather (always have a backup plan) and leaving tasks until the last minute, which adds unnecessary stress. Plan the day before the wedding to relax and have quality time with family and friends. What qualities do you think make a successful marriage celebrant, and how can someone develop those qualities? Celebrants need to be empathic, have strong administration and communication skills,

flexibility to adapt to different circumstances, be able to remain calm under pressure, manage family dynamics, and have a great sense of humour. These qualities can be developed through celebrant training, public speaking practice, and ongoing learning and networking with other celebrants or mentors.

What’s the most memorable wedding you’ve officiated, and why does it stand out to you? Many weddings stand out because of the love shared between the couple. One particularly memorable ceremony took place at dawn, where we walked, following torchlight, up to the headland. As the sun rose, an acapella song filled the air, and the couple exchanged their vows. Fortunately, I love being an early bird and the stillness of the early morning made it all the more special. What’s the most touching or emotional moment you’ve experienced during a wedding ceremony? One emotional moment I witnessed was when a groom’s elderly grandfather, unable to travel from Scotland, appeared on a live video call during the ceremony to give them his blessing. The room was silent as they listened to him offer the

bride a traditional welcome into the clan.

How do you feel about retiring from being a marriage celebrant, and what are your plans for the future? Retiring from being a marriage celebrant brings mixed emotions. On one hand, it’s hard to step away from a role that’s been so deeply fulfilling and meaningful. On the other hand, I’m still very involved in the community as a funeral celebrant and I’d also like to spend more time writing poetry.

What do you hope your legacy will be as a marriage celebrant? I hope my legacy has made people feel seen, valued, and celebrated through the ceremonies I’ve created, and that I’ve fostered deep connections, helping people honour their stories and what truly matters to them. Most of all, I wish to leave behind a legacy of kindness, empathy, and respect for the beautiful and diverse ways people love. Is there anything you’ll miss about being a marriage celebrant, or anything you won’t miss. There’s so much to love about being a celebrant: the moments of connection, hearing couples’ love stories, crafting and conducting the ceremonies. Witnessing families and friends unite on such an important day has been incredibly fulfilling. I won’t miss the behind-thescenes administration!

Thanks Wendy. wendy@wendyhaynes.com https://wendyhaynes.com/

Bridal Beauty

with@makeupbynicolajill

Hi Nicola. What inspired you to pursue a career in bridal makeup, and how long have you been working in the industry? Makeup has always been a part of my life. I can still remember watching my Mum “put her face on” each morning, I loved how it gave her instant confidence. That fascination turned into a hobby, doing makeup for friends and family at special events. Recently, with encouragement from those close to me, I decided to take the leap and offer my services professionally. Bridal makeup, in particular, caught my attention because it’s about enhancing a bride’s natural beauty to give her that same confidence on one of the most important days of her life. There’s something truly special about that.

As a newcomer to the bridal beauty world, what unique qualities or approaches do you bring to your makeup artistry? My corporate background has definitely given me an edge when it comes to organisation and communication. I pride myself on being responsive and making sure my brides feel comfortable and at ease. I’ve

always believed that everyone is beautiful in their own skin, and I work to enhance that beauty while making sure the bride’s vision comes to life. We chat about their style and preferences, and I create a look that feels natural and authentic to them.

As you plan your own wedding, how has being a bride influenced your perspective as a makeup artist? Planning my wedding has been a real eye-opener! It’s reinforced just how important clear communication is, especially when it comes to pricing and logistics. I’ve always been transparent with my brides, but now I understand the importance of making sure everything is crystal clear from the start. No bride wants hidden costs or surprises and my goal is to ensure that they feel taken care of and can enjoy their day without any stress.

Are there any specific makeup trends or looks you're excited to try for your own wedding, and how do you envision your bridal look? For my own wedding, I’m all about a flawless base that still looks like my own skin, with a simple, understated eye. I want those freckles to shine through! In my

view, bridal makeup should highlight your natural beauty, so I’m keeping it soft and glowing. I’m also drawn to matte eye looks with a smoky liner, timeless and elegant, perfect for any bride. But hey, I adore a “full glam” look too!

What advice would you give to a bride choosing a makeup artist? Find an artist whose style resonates with you and who makes you feel comfortable. Every artist has their own vibe, so it’s important to connect with someone whose work and personality you love - you’ll be spending a lot of time with them on the day! I’d also recommend booking a trial. It takes so much pressure off the wedding day. Lastly, be realistic with your expectations, look at your artist’s actual work rather than online inspiration photos, which are sometimes edited or AI-generated. How can people get in touch with you? I’m currently booking for 2025 and 2026! Feel free to reach out on Instagram @ makeupbynicolajill to check out my work and chat about your big day!

Thanks Nicola.

Hi Janika, please take us through your business journey so far.

It’s definitely been a whirlwind for sure! I kind of always knew that I wanted to own my own business. However, being a kid from the bush I just pushed it aside and tried to work and be the best employee I could, but I always ended up feeling like I wasn’t doing enough. In 2023 Keegan and I decided it was time to find a van and turn it into our little dream and in September of 2023 that became a reality. Flow Beauty has been something of a dream if you will, Esther and I have been talking of our own salon space since 2019!

Tell us about The Lane Way Events mobile beverage van – what services do you offer and how can people engage your services?

The Lane Way Events was a coffee van turned mobile bar! People can text us on 0436 008 836 or email us at enquiries@ thelanewayevents.com for more information. We love to take those interested for a coffee at any of the cafés around Coffs Harbour and talk through the event so that we can customise our service to their event. We can do BYO services where we bring our van out, you provide the alcohol and mixers, and our

Janika and Keegan Lane are a powerhouse couple who are passionate about business. Starting with their mobile beverage van - e Lane Way Events has quickly become popular at events and weddings as well. Janika has now branched into her own beauty salon called Flow Beauty with Esther. We had to find out more….

team will keep the drinks flowing. We do also have packages available. We try and keep all our business local by using Woopi Brewing, Critters Distillery, and Winding Road Distillery. You have just opened Flow Beauty. Tell us about your unique approach to beauty?

Welcome to Flow Beauty, where beauty flows inside, and out! Flow Beauty is about the client! We want you to feel loved, held and heard when you are here. Esther and I both have a holistic view on the body and particularly beauty services. We are bringing colour back to the industry - think purples, blues, and pinks. On any given day you will find Esther and I both wearing fun colours, that’s just who we are!

What treatments can clients book?

Anything you can think of; body treatments such as scrubs, massage and waxing, brow and lash services, holistic facials using incredible Heritage Healer products, mani, pedi, and nail extensions.

What has been the response so far?

We have had such a positive response, particularly from mama’s alike. Being a busy mum of two, I have a soft spot for those that are time poor, busy mums so we have an incredible 20-minute massage available.

Has this been a dream of yours to do?

It has been such a dream; I cannot believe that

its happening. This could not have happened without Esther too; she is the most incredible person. This is her dream too and I am just so lucky that our principles align so well, and we are both super enthusiastic about it!

What advice do you have for a young couple like yourselves when starting a business (or 2)?

If you know what you want to do, go for it. Research the market, find your people, and make it happen. My biggest piece of advice is that you will find most people in the same industry can be your biggest supporters, they know the struggle.

We could not have got through The Lane Way Events first year without the support of many local cafes like Palate and Ply and Swiftt and our supplier Botero!

How can people book an appointment at Flow Beauty and where are you situated?

Oooo, so you can call or text us on 0432 349 119 and we will get back to you as soon as we can, or you can find us on Facebook and Instagram where there is a link to our booking platform. We are situated at Boambee Swim School, on the left when you enter the gate!

on PARK 99

What is your favourite part about being involved in a couple’s wedding journey? The best part of our job is working with couples from the very start, when everything is still in the planning stages. We help the couple to bring their dream to life. Our reward is seeing everything come together and everyone just having a great time, enjoying the food and restaurant.

What types of wedding reception packages do you offer, and what do they typically include?

99 On Park is a restaurant that is event ready. We have the venue, the food, the drinks and the technology. We have four main menu types to choose from.

Plated, a more formal setting; Finger Food – an interactive menu that is walked around; Buffet – great for larger number of guests; and

Family style – a more intimate style - with large platters on each table and everyone serves themselves.

We of course can mix and match

the styles. For example, a wedding we did recently was Finger Style canapes to start for guests on arrival and then a family style, main and dessert. We work with the couple to craft a menu that reflects the couple’s personality. We take the time to sit down with couples and discuss their preferences. We can organise tastings as well, to make sure that everything is just right for the special day. We also have the full bar available, beer, wine, spirits and cocktails. We have a full PA system available, with projector and microphones, which come in handy for those wedding speeches. When you book your wedding reception at 99, you get exclusive use of the restaurant, which includes both the front and back courtyards.

How can couples best approach the process of booking and planning their wedding at your venue? The best way to contact us is via email, dine@99onpark. com.au with some details of the wedding; when, how many people and the sort of menu you’d like? We can then arrange a time to come and see the space, discuss menus that will suit the couple’s vision and go from there.

arried bySam

Declaring your love for your partner is a moment you’ll never forget. For the past 15 years, Sam Dawson from Married by Sam has been bringing couples together, cra ing unforge able weddings with warmth and heart. With her infectious personality and passion for love, Sam is commi ed to making your dream day a reality—creating a celebration that’s all about your perfect happily ever a er.

HCelebrant who has conducted over 590 ceremonies and are passionate about love in all forms, you enjoy nothing more than helping others celebrate their most memorable day. When was it that you took the leap and started working as a celebrant?

I had moved from Alice Springs in 2007 with my husband and three children after working in TV for over 10 years and it was always a dream of mine to be a marriage celebrant! I had broken my ankle in a freak accident so whilst recovering I investigated how to do this and enrolled in an online yearly course. I was working by day and studying at night. I used my poor family as actors for the video practicals that I had to submit and I graduated in 2011. I then went ahead with advertising and letting the Coffs community know about my services. That is when I decided to buy my

hot pink VW Beetle and get a professional logo and website. I also did some wedding expos and put my name out there as much as possible, - I did Focus ads too!

How has your business grown, expanded and kept up with the everchanging events in the world?

It’s a business that grows organically when people can see how you deliver a wedding, plus word of mouth is so important when people can see how professional and efficient you are. I also took the time to make sure all my marketing was aligned from having a logo, car branding, a website I could update regularly and my social media, plus testimonials which are powerful too. Choosing

I think it’s so important that the audience can hear the ceremony clearly, no ma er the venue or wedding ceremony, indoors or out.

a celebrant is so personal and I believe its important that you can “click”. I always market myself as fun, yet highly professional with the right equipment too. I think it’s so important that the audience can hear the ceremony clearly, no matter the venue or wedding ceremony, indoors or out. Equally each couple need to trust that you will look after them, assist in creating their own personalised ceremony and make sure it’s to their style. I work closely with each couple to make sure they are 100% happy. If I can make the ceremony part seamless then they can relax as they have so many other areas of a wedding day to organise.

What services are on offer and what

region do you cover?

My services include weddings, vow renewals and baby naming ceremonies. I cover the whole Mid North Coast but I’ve also been lucky to have maried people all over Australia including Queensland, the Northern Territory, WA and this year South Australia.

two of my three children getting married this year. I absolutely love it when my weddings cross over with friends and family as I get to be a part of something truly special. We had lived in the NT for 20 years, so to return to do special friends' weddings from that era was the best.

I am also a huge advocate of same sex weddings and spearheaded the Marriage Equality campaign here in Coffs Harbour, alongside many other wedding industry suppliers and I so love that everyone can marry who they love.

It's so true that you form a special connection as there is a deep level of trust in me to create, deliver and follow throughthe responsibility is huge.

My children are now all at the marrying stage as are their friends too, so its extra special when you know them. Coincidentally, I have

With your unique approach, ensuring you get to know the couple and find what they’re after on their big day, what is it that you love the most about the special connections you create with clients and how do you work with them to make the day a success?

I think it's important to love what you do and be passionate about this role as it shines through. I love the whole creating process of making sure their ceremony is exactly what each couple envisioned. This part of the day can go too

quickly but its actually the most important part - it's about actually declaring your love to your chosen life partner. It's so true that you form a special connection, as there is a deep level of trust in me to create, deliver and follow through - the responsibility is huge. Because you discuss their meeting story and their feelings of love, it's natural that you end up forming a special connection. It's such a special space you share and I love it when I see them after that in the street or on social media and see their lives unfolding, like with starting a family.

Lastly, have you done any memorable or unusual weddings?

I love all my weddings and I can say I’ve enjoyed dressing up ones too, like Maleficent at one wedding and Moira Rose as a Pope on a catamaran at another as well as a wedding on the 4th July - May the Forth Be with You - where I was Princess Leia! I genuinely love being a part of every wedding, meeting all kinds of couples, and I believe there’s no profession quite like this one that gets you a front row seat to so many different people and their lives.

FROM LIFELINE NORTH COAST

n our fast-paced world, stress has become an unwelcome constant. Though unseen, its effects are profound - racing heartbeats, tension-filled shoulders, sleepless nights, and the gnawing sense of overwhelm. Over time, this persistent stress can disrupt our mental and physical well-being, contributing to anxiety, depression, and even chronic illnesses like heart disease. But what if the key to unlocking calm and clarity lies in something as simple as focusing inward?

Meditation, an ancient practice with modern relevance, offers a path to reclaiming inner peace. By dedicating a few minutes daily to focus the mind, we can reduce stress, enhance our mood, and foster a profound connection with ourselves. Meditation works by calming the sympathetic nervous system, lowering heart rate and blood pressure, and allowing the body and mind to rest deeply. While the health benefits of meditation are significant - reduced anxiety, improved concentration, and even pain relief, it offers more than just physiological rewards. Meditation can help your creativity, intuition and your connection with your inner self.

MEDITATION FOR MENTAL HEALTH AND WELLBEING

There are many forms of meditation, each tailored to different needs. Concentration meditation teaches the art of focus, while heart-centred meditation guides awareness to the heart to foster emotional healing. Mindfulness meditation encourages the objective observation of thoughts, promoting calm and detachment. Movement-based practices like tai chi and qigong combine physical exercise with meditative breathing. Meanwhile, transcendental meditation uses mantras to quiet the mind, and walking meditation blends movement with awareness for a grounding experience.

Getting started is refreshingly simple. You don’t need expensive equipment or hours of free time, just a quiet space and a few minutes of your day. By setting aside a designated spot, surrounding yourself with soothing elements like candles or incense, and committing to even five minutes of mindful breathing, you can begin to notice a shift in your mood and perspective.

For those new to the practice, joining a meditation class or group can provide structure and guidance. Meditating alongside others can amplify the experience, and having

a teacher walk you through techniques makes starting easier and more enjoyable.

This February, join Lifeline North Coast for free Self-Care Sunday Sunrise Meditation Sessions. Held on Jetty Beach over three Sundays starting February 9, these peaceful mornings offer a chance to unwind, reconnect, and practice mindfulness with the rising sun.

These events are completely free and open to all, reflecting Lifeline North Coast’s ongoing commitment to supporting mental health and well-being in our community. Whether you’re new to meditation or looking to deepen your practice, this is a beautiful opportunity to prioritise self-care and set a positive tone for the week ahead.

Join us at the peaceful morning sessions and discover the calming power of meditation. Together, let’s take a moment to breathe, reflect, and nurture our mental health, because caring for ourselves is the first step in caring for others.

ARecognising the Signs

FROM BEYOND THE SURFACE COUNSELLING with JULIE THOMAS

dolescence is a critical period of development, marked by significant physical, emotional, and social changes. During this time, mental health challenges can emerge, making it essential for parents, educators, and caregivers to understand and support adolescents effectively.

Adolescents may exhibit various signs of mental health issues, including changes in mood, behaviour, and academic performance. Common indicators include withdrawal from social activities, changes in sleep patterns, and changes in school performance. Early recognition is crucial for timely intervention. According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), globally, one in seven 10-19-year-olds experiences a mental disorder. Depression, anxiety and behavioural disorders are among the leading causes of illness and disability among adolescents. Suicide is the third leading cause of death among those aged 15–29 years old. The consequences of not addressing adolescent mental health conditions extend into adulthood, impacting both physical and mental health and limiting opportunities to lead fulfilling lives as adults.

Signs You May Observe

Persistent Sadness or Irritability: Adolescents may experience prolonged periods of sadness or irritability that do not seem to have a clear cause.

Loss of Interest in Activities: A noticeable decline in interest or pleasure in activities that were once enjoyed, such as hobbies, sports, or socialising, may indicate mental health issues.

Changes in Eating Habits: Significant changes in appetite or weight, whether an increase or decrease, may be a sign of an eating disorder or

other mental health concerns.

Excessive Worry or Anxiety: Persistent and excessive worry or fear about everyday situations, school performance, or social interactions.

Difficulty Concentrating: Struggling to focus, complete tasks, or make decisions.

Physical Complaints: Frequent complaints of physical ailments such as headaches, stomach aches, or unexplained aches and pains can sometimes be linked to mental health problems.

Self-Harm: Engaging in self-injurious behaviours, such as cutting, is a serious sign of emotional distress and requires immediate attention.

Substance Abuse: Using alcohol, drugs, or other substances to cope with emotions or stress can be a sign of underlying mental health issues.

Social Withdrawal: Avoiding friends, family, and social activities, and spending excessive time alone.

Extreme Mood Swings: Experiencing intense and rapid changes in mood, from extreme highs to severe lows.

Sleep Disturbances: Changes in sleep patterns, such as insomnia, excessive sleeping, or frequent nightmares.

Changes in Academic Performance: A sudden change in grades, lack of interest in school, or frequent absences may be a sign of mental health struggles.

Feelings of Worthlessness or Guilt: Expressing feelings of being worthless, excessive guilt, or self-blame.

Aggressive or Defiant Behaviours: Increased irritability, anger, or defiance towards authority figures.

Thoughts of Death or Suicide: Talking about death, expressing a desire to die, or making

plans for suicide are critical signs that require immediate intervention and support.

Creating a Supportive Environment for Adolescents

A supportive environment is vital for adolescents’ mental wellbeing. Encourage open communication, provide a safe space for expressing emotions, and actively listen without judgment. Building trust and showing empathy can significantly impact an adolescent’s willingness to seek help. Research from the American Psychological Association highlights that supportive family relationships can buffer the effects of stress and promote resilience in adolescents.

Promoting Healthy Coping Mechanisms

Adolescents need to develop healthy coping mechanisms to manage stress and emotional challenges. Encourage physical exercise, creative outlets like art or music, journalling and mindfulness practices. These activities can help adolescents build resilience and improve their overall mental health. Studies have shown that regular physical activity can reduce symptoms of depression and anxiety in adolescents.

Professional Support

Sometimes, professional help is necessary to provide valuable support. If you notice any of these signs in an adolescent, it is important to seek professional help. Early intervention can significantly improve their mental health and overall wellbeing.

Until next time, be kind and gentle with yourself.

Haymess

Studio

Miranda Cull and Bronwyn Napiorkowski are both registered clinical art therapists who have recently opened Happymess Studio in Bellingen, an accessible and inclusive creative hub where they o er erapeutic Arts & Dynamic Creative Workshops for all ages.

HCan you share a bit about your backgrounds and how Happymess Studio came to be? What was the main goal in setting up the studio?

Miranda: When we met, we were excited to explore how we could combine art therapy with opportunities for people to connect to their creativity. I grew up in this area and, after being away for 20 years, it was important to me to bring the skills I’ve gained to create a space that supports positive change in the community. Bronwyn and I both have over a decade of experience in mental health settings, including Headspace and the Royal Melbourne Hospital, and we completed our Masters in Creative Arts Therapy in 2019.

Bronwyn: Growing up as a neurodiverse individual in a regional NSW town, I often experienced feelings of loneliness and disconnection, compounded by a lack of accessible support services. These challenges deeply shaped my journey and have become one of the key threads leading me to start Happymess Studio. Throughout my life, creativity has been my lifeline, a way to understand myself and navigate the world around me. Whether through textiles, design,

or painting, creative expression offered me a sense of connection, clarity, and resilience. We opened Happymess Studio in May 2024 to provide a safe, inclusive, and professional space where people could access therapeutic services tailored to their needs. Mental health services can be hard to access in rural areas, so we wanted to bridge that gap while enriching therapy with creativity.

As registered clinical art therapists, what sets your approach apart from traditional therapy or standard creative workshops?

Miranda: Our approach blends clinical expertise with creative practices. As registered members of ANZACATA and PACFA, we meet the highest standards of therapeutic care. Art therapy is unique because it provides a framework for those who might not connect with traditional talk therapy, whether because of age, trauma, neurodiversity, or personal preference. With art, creating becomes the language.

Bronwyn: Unlike standard creative workshops, our sessions are designed for real therapeutic benefits. We aim to help people process trauma, reduce anxiety, and build emotional resilience. Creativity is such a valuable tool for holistic wellbeing, it can offer joy, connection, and self-discovery. Why do you believe creativity is such

a powerful tool for healing and selfdiscovery, and how do your programs foster this connection?

Miranda: Creativity allows people to explore emotions and experiences that words often can’t capture. It’s a gentle, intuitive process that encourages self-expression, reduces stress, and helps people better understand themselves.

Bronwyn: We design our programs to provide a safe, supportive environment where participants feel empowered to explore their creativity. Whether through therapeutic art sessions or group workshops, we tailor activities to promote healing and personal growth.

Happymess prides itself on being inclusive and welcoming to individuals from all walks of life. Can you tell us about some of the services available at your studio?

Bronwyn: Inclusivity is at the heart of what we do. We’re mindful of financial barriers, so we offer services through funding schemes like the NSW Government Victims Services program, which provides up to 22 hours of counselling per year with no out-of-pocket costs.

Miranda: We’re also NDIS-registered, so participants can access therapy through their NDIS funding. We collaborate with clients and families to address challenges, improve functional capacity, and build confidence.

Bronwyn:

We

Therapy Group on the first Sunday of every month. It’s a safe space where participants can share, create, and connect through art therapy. The session includes afternoon tea and is open to everyone, regardless of artistic ability.

Miranda: Starting this year, we’re launching a monthly art workshop series featuring local artists. The first workshop will be led by Meg Wilkinson, a weaver and botanical textile dyer. Each month, we’ll showcase a new medium and artist, so keep an eye on our socials for updates.

Bronwyn: For younger participants, we’re offering term-based programs, such as a graphic novel illustration class and a resiliencebuilding group for girls. These programs foster creativity, social connection, and self-discovery. How has the local community responded to Happymess?

Miranda: The response has been overwhelmingly positive. Parents, schools, and individuals have given wonderful feedback about having a space like this where they feel supported and safe. It’s been warming to see the community embracing both our therapeutic

and creative offerings.

Bronwyn: One of our proudest moments was receiving the Ian J Cooper Access and Inclusion Award from Bellingen Council during Disability Week. It was a wonderful recognition of our commitment to making therapy accessible to everyone.

e first workshop will be led by Meg Wilkinson, a weaver and botanical textile dyer. Each month, we’ll showcase a new medium and artist, so keep an eye on our socials for updates.

As founders, what has been the most rewarding part of your journey with Happymess Studio?

Bronwyn: Seeing the transformation in our clients is incredibly rewarding. Watching someone overcome challenges or discover inner strength through therapy is what keeps us motivated.

Miranda: For me, it’s about creating a space where people feel genuinely heard and supported. Every breakthrough or moment of connection reminds me why we started Happymess.

What are your future plans for Happymess Studio? Are there any upcoming projects or initiatives you’re excited about?

Miranda: We’re excited to expand our professional development programs, offering workshops for schools, health services, and

local businesses. Sharing our expertise with other professionals is something we’re really passionate about.

Bronwyn: We’re also continuing to grow our monthly workshops and private events, such as paint-and-sip evenings and life drawing sessions. These events make art accessible and enjoyable for everyone.

What advice would you give to individuals who want to explore art as a tool for personal growth but feel hesitant to take the first step?

Bronwyn: Start small and let go of the need for perfection. The process of creating is what matters, not the outcome.

Miranda: Don’t hesitate to ask for support. Joining a workshop or working with a therapist can make the process less intimidating. At Happymess, we create a safe space for people to explore their creativity, no matter their skill level.

Where can we find out more or get in touch?

Miranda: You can visit our website at happymess.com.au or email us at hello@ happymess.com.au.

Bronwyn: You’re also welcome to visit us in person at Shop 2/41 Hyde St, Bellingen, NSW, or follow us on social media for updates on workshops and events. We look forward to welcoming you to Happymess Studio!

Thanks.

Helen Mears is an incredible local woman who has dedicated over 40 years of volunteer service with the Pink Ladies Co s Harbour, with 35 of those years as their President. e contribution she has made to the Pink Ladies and, in turn, our local hospital, is invaluable, and as she retires from her position as President we wish her all the best and many thanks on behalf of the community.

Hi Helen, can you take us back to the beginning? What first inspired you to join the Pink Ladies over 40 years ago, and what motivated you to stay so committed?

I met a wonderful woman named Eunice Scott while out in town, and she happened to be a Pink Lady. She encouraged me to join, and that conversation sparked my lifelong commitment to this incredible group.

Over the years, I’ve seen many ladies come and go, but I stayed because I didn’t have anything else to do. I used to help with the school canteen for my children and later my

grandchildren. When that chapter ended, I decided to join the Pink Ladies, and it became my favourite hobby.

What has been the most rewarding part of serving as President of the Pink Ladies for 35 years?

It’s been 45 years since I joined, with 35 of those as President. The most rewarding part has been seeing all the changes, especially the development of the new coffee shop and the incredible funds we’ve raised through it to buy equipment for the hospital. The amount of money we’ve generated is astounding, and it makes a tremendous difference; it’s truly wonderful.

Over your amazing tenure, what

milestones or accomplishments stand out as your proudest achievements?

I can’t pinpoint just one, I just keep doing what I do. However, I am incredibly proud of the resilience and dedication of the hardworking Pink Ladies at Coffs Harbour Health Campus.

Are you still working there now?

I’ve scaled back a bit, but I’m now focused on sewing for the hospital. I create fiddle blankets for dementia patients, clothes for the nursery, and drainage bag covers for cancer patients. All of this is made using materials provided by the Pink Ladies.

So, you've received numerous prestigious awards including the medal of the Order

of Australia and Volunteer of the Year. What do these recognitions mean to you personally?

I don’t volunteer for the awards, I do it because I love it. That said, the day I received the Order of Australia Medal was absolutely magical, one of the best days of my life. It was wonderful to be recognised, but for me, it’s all about the joy of volunteering and the amazing friendships I’ve made along the way.

35 years is a long time, and over that period, many women have come and gone. It’s bittersweet when I look through my phone and realise some are no longer here or have moved on to other things. But the friendships I’ve made along the way have been truly wonderful, it’s been such a joy.

How do you believe the Pink Ladies have made a difference in the lives of patients, staff and the broader community?

I believe we do a fantastic job. Going around to the wards with the trolley a couple of days a week is really appreciated by patients who can’t make it down to the gift shop for

essentials like toothbrushes, toothpaste, or shampoo. It truly makes a big difference, both for the patients and the staff. Additionally, the hundreds of thousands of dollars in equipment donations we've made and the great coffee and food provided by the café to both staff and patients have had a huge impact, creating a positive atmosphere for everyone.

It’s bi ersweet when I look through my phone and realise some are no longer here or have moved on to other things. But the friendships I’ve made along the way have been truly wonderful—it’s been such a joy.

Even though you've stepped down as President you'll be continuing as a volunteer, what drives you to stay involved and what will you enjoy most about this new chapter?

I’m not sure, I just keep going because I still enjoy it. I’ve had some time off recently, but now as we approach February, with a couple of girls away, I’ll probably step in and do afternoons since I can manage that time now.

The Pink Ladies’ Cafe and Gift Shop have been central to your efforts. What role do these spaces play in supporting the hospital and what was your vision for them? Did you have a vision for the cafe? We’ve just kept working, with all the ladies putting in so much effort, making sandwiches

every week, which is wonderful. I suppose you could say it’s been about consistent hard work, we don’t stop, and it’s that dedication that’s turned it into a success. I really believe it’s one of the most successful cafés because of that steady commitment.

What would you say to someone considering volunteering at their local hospital community organisation?

I truly believe they should give it serious thought because it’s such a rewarding thing to do, and there’s always a need for more volunteers.

There is currently a need for more volunteers to man the café at the hospital. Interested people can email: pinkladiescoffsharbour@ gmail.com

With more than 60 people gathering to honour you at the thank you morning tea, how did you receive such an outpouring of love and appreciation from the community?

It was such an emotional moment, I couldn’t believe it. The experience was so special, and now there’s a beautiful mural on the wall that I absolutely love and it’ll be there forever.

I’m still there to support the new President of the Pink Ladies, Leigh Gaibraith, who’s doing an amazing job, along with all the other Pink Ladies who dedicate their time every day to volunteer at the hospital.

Thanks Helen.

SAIGE

HEALTH & WELLNESS

What is Saige Health & Wellness? Saige is a new medical practice dedicated to providing obstetric and gynaecological care. It will take over the space of the recently closed Womens Reproductive Care.

The closure created the chance to consider doing things a little differently and we started with the name. We wanted to create a safe and supportive environment to all women and those presumed female at birth, without focusing on pregnancy and reproduction alone. So, what’s new at Saige? The team at Saige have been busy looking to recruit a

variety of health care providers who can work collaboratively to provide care in women’s health throughout their life. Specialist gynaecologist and specialist women’s health GPs have already signed on to work from Saige but we are continuing to chase obstetricians, ultrasound, physiotherapy, nursing, and allied health to join as well. What’s the same? We are excited to announce the same caring and wonderful Madi and Tess from Womens Reproductive Care will be our front of house reception. Dr Aaron Budden has also come on board with Saige from our first day and will provide his ongoing services unchanged.

Where can we find out more? Saige has been born very quickly from the sudden closure of Womens Reproductive Care. Keep an eye out on the socials for more information on our services and practitioners over the coming weeks but for now you can reach out over phone and email.

March is Endometriosis Awareness Month

Endometriosis Awareness Month, observed every March, plays a crucial role in raising awareness about endometriosis.

Endometriosis is a chronic medical condition where tissue similar to the lining of the uterus grows outside of it, often leading to painful symptoms, including severe menstrual cramps, chronic pelvic pain, infertility, and gastrointestinal issues.

Endometriosis affects 1 in 7 Australian women, and many others who are transgender or gender diverse, or remain undiagnosed or misdiagnosed. A campaign by Endometriosis Australia, “March into Yellow”, encourages the wearing of yellow throughout the month to highlight support for endometriosis, and assist in starting conversations about this disease.

Hairy HAIR SALON umours

Hairy Rumours started in Park Avenue, Coffs Harbour in 1988. I managed the salon for two years, then my Mum, Sue and I bought the salon.

We opened a second salon in Toormina Gardens in 1991 and a third salon in Park Beach Plaza in 1997.

We were established at Park Beach Plaza for 27 years before relocating to Orlando Street in the Jetty area in October last year. Elana Forrest has become a co-owner in Hairy Rumours in conjunction with our move into our new location. Elana started her hairdressing apprenticeship with us six years ago.

How have you seen the hair industry change over the years?

When I first started hairdressing in the late 1980’s, nearly everybody had a perm and not a lot of colour. Over the years it has changed to lots of colour all over or lots of foils. These days, current trends are low maintenance colours and more natural blonds.

How do you stay up-to-date with the latest developments and advancements in the industry?

We conduct regular in-house training nights. These vary from skill development with our junior staff to colour and product training provided by our suppliers. In the past we have attended the annual Hair Expo and styling competitions.

Many of our clients have been coming in for over 30 years. I’ve seen many young children come in, grow up and are now bringing their own children in.

Social media now provides a good deal of inspiration and a means of keeping up to date with trends in the industry.

How have you managed to maintain a loyal client base over the years?

Hairy Rumours has always been an affordable hairdressing salon. We offer good service at a reasonable price.

At Hairy Rumours, you pay for what you want. If you just want a haircut and nothing else, that’s all you pay for. If you want a full blowdry after your service, then you pay extra for that.

Many of our clients have been coming in for over 30 years. I’ve seen many young children come in, grow up and are now bringing their own children in. This has also been incredibly

rewarding, having such long-term connections with clients and their families.

What inspired you to open your own hair salon, and what were some of the biggest challenges you faced in the early days?

As my Mum, Sue was a hairdresser it’s all I ever wanted to do growing up. I started my apprenticeship in Bathurst. When we moved to Coffs Harbour, we wanted to buy a salon but there was nothing available at the time. I finished my apprenticeship and was offered the opportunity to buy Hairy Rumours. Having Mum with me was the perfect opportunity to own our own salon.

We have a staff of seven, five senior stylists and two apprentices. Our senior stylists are Beth, who has been with us for 14 years, Leanne has been with us for 10 years, Elana for six years and Keisha who has been with us for three years. Our two apprentice hairdressers are Mia and Alysha.

You can get in touch with Hairy Rumours by calling us on 02 6651 9666.

Entering Aged Care: Financial Guidance for Peace of Mind

Expert Advice from an Aged Care Specialist Financial Planner

Entering aged care is a significant life transition, whether for yourself, a family member, or a friend. As an aged care specialist financial planner, I understand the complexities involved and aim to provide supportive and informative guidance to help you navigate the changes with confidence and peace of mind.

The Importance of Early Planning

It’s never too soon to start considering future aged care needs. Planning ahead allows you to explore all available options, make informed decisions, and avoid the stress of last-minute arrangements. If you think that aged care may become necessary, start having open conversations with your loved ones about their preferences and needs.

Navigating the Financial Aspects

Understanding the financial implications of aged care is very important. Here are some key tips to help you navigate this complex landscape:

1. Understand the Costs. Aged care costs can vary widely depending on the type of care and the facility. There are several components to consider, including accommodation costs, daily care fees, and additional services fees. It’s important to have a clear understanding of these

costs and how they will impact your financial situation.

2. Explore Funding Options. There are various funding options available to help cover aged care costs. These may include government subsidies, pensions, and personal savings. Exploring these options early on can significantly ease the financial burden.

3. Maximize Your Benefits. Ensuring you receive all the benefits and entitlements you are eligible for is essential. This includes understanding means-tested care fees, accommodation supplements, and other government support programs.

The Role of a Specialist Financial Planner

An aged care specialist financial planner plays a vital role in making the transition to aged care smoother and more manageable. Here’s how I can help:

1. Personalised Financial Advice. Every individual’s financial situation is unique. I provide tailored advice that considers your specific needs, preferences, and financial goals. This personalised approach ensures that you make informed decisions that best suit your circumstances.

2. Comprehensive Financial Planning. I offer comprehensive financial planning services

that encompass all aspects of aged care. From assessing your current financial situation to developing a long-term strategy, my goal is to provide a clear and actionable plan that ensures financial security and peace of mind.

Conclusion. Entering aged care can be a daunting process, but with the right guidance and planning, it can also be a smooth and manageable transition. As an aged care specialist financial planner, my goal is to provide you with the knowledge, tools, and support you need to navigate the financial aspects of aged care confidently. Remember, early planning is key, and seeking professional advice can make all the difference in ensuring a secure and comfortable future for you and your loved ones.

MASTERING EXPENSE MANAGEMENT IN YOUR BUSINESS

Effectively managing your expenses is crucial for sustaining growth and ensuring profitability of your business, while ensuring you have a smoother journey along the way. Whether you’re a start-up or an established enterprise, maintaining control over your finances can be the difference between success and failure. Here are eight strategies to help you better manage your business expenses and keep your finances and operations running smoothly.

1. Establish a Comprehensive Budget. Creating a detailed budget is the foundation of effective expense management. A budget shouldn’t just be a one-time task but a dynamic tool that adapts as your business grows. Start by identifying your fixed and variable costs, and use historical data to forecast future expenses. Regularly review and adjust your budget to reflect changes in your business environment, ensuring it remains relevant and accurate.

2. Monitor Cash Flow Diligently. Cash flow is the lifeblood of any business. Keeping a close eye on your inflows and outflows will help you avoid cash shortages. Implement a system to monitor your cash flow in real time — this could be through accounting software that alerts you to discrepancies or potential problems. Regular cash flow analysis enables you to identify trends and make informed financial decisions promptly.

3. Separate Personal and Business Finances. Mixing personal and business finances can lead

to confusion, making it difficult to track business expenses accurately. Open dedicated business banking accounts and ensure only business transactions are conducted through them. This separation not only aids in clear financial analysis but also simplifies tax preparation and legal obligations.

4. Implement Expense Tracking Tools. Technology offers numerous solutions to streamline expense management. Consider using expense tracking software or apps that allow you to photograph receipts and automate entries. These tools can generate comprehensive reports, providing insights into spending patterns and helping you identify areas for cost reductions.

5. Review and Reduce Unnecessary Expenses. Regularly review your expenses to identify non-essential costs. This could include subscriptions, services, or supplies that are rarely used or that don’t add significant value to your operations. Make sure expenses are worthwhile, and approach vendors for better rates or seek alternative suppliers.

6. Foster a Cost-Conscious Culture. Encourage your team to be mindful of spending by promoting a culture that prioritises cost efficiency. Educate employees about the impact of expenses on your business bottom line, and empower them to suggest improvements. When everyone is aware of financial goals, they are more likely to contribute to cost-saving initiatives.

7. Plan for Taxes Early. Taxes can be a

significant expense, so it’s crucial to plan for them well in advance. Work with a tax professional to ensure compliance with all tax obligations, and take advantage of any deductions or credits available to your business. Setting aside money for taxes up front helps prevent cash flow issues at tax time.

8. Regular Financial Audits. Conduct periodic audits of your financial statements. This doesn’t necessarily mean hiring an outside firm; instead, engage a team member or business partner to review the records. These audits can help you discover discrepancies, unexpected expenses or even fraudulent activities early, allowing for timely correction.

Conclusion. Effective expense management is not a one-time task but an ongoing process that requires vigilance and adaptation. By establishing a robust budget, employing the right tools, and fostering a cost-conscious culture, you can ensure your business maintains financial health. Implement these strategies to transform your expenses from a potential pitfall into a pillar of your business strategy, driving growth and sustainable success.

The performing arts have long been celebrated for their ability to enrich our cultural landscape, but their impact on child development extends far beyond that stage. Recent research from both Australia and the United Kingdom reveals compelling evidence that quality performing arts education plays a crucial role in cognitive development and social-emotional growth.

A landmark study by the Australia Council for the Arts found that students who participate in performing arts programs demonstrate enhanced neural connectivity, particularly in areas associated with memory, attention, and executive function. This aligns with research from the University of Oxford, which observed that children engaged in regular dramatic activities showed a 23% improvement in working memory capacity compared to their peers.

The social benefits are equally significant. Research from the University of Sydney’s Brain and Mind Centre indicates that students involved in performing arts programs show markedly improved emotional regulation and empathy. The study tracked 2,000 students over three years, finding that those participating in theatre and music activities

were 37% more likely to report positive peer relationships and demonstrated superior conflict resolution skills.

These findings are further supported by a comprehensive review from the UK’s Durham Commission on Creativity and Education, which emphasises how performing arts education develops crucial 21st-century skills or soft skills. The commission found that students involved in regular dramatic activities showed increased creative problem-solving abilities and enhanced communication skillsessential attributes for future success in any field.

Perhaps most striking is the impact on academic achievement. Data from the Australian Curriculum Assessment and Reporting Authority shows that schools with strong performing arts programs consistently demonstrate higher literacy rates and improved attendance. This correlation isn’t coincidental; the cognitive processes involved

in learning lines, understanding character motivation, and collaborating in ensemble work or group dances directly support academic development across all subjects. As educators, we must recognise that performing arts education isn’t merely an “extra” in our curriculum - it’s a fundamental component of comprehensive child development. When we invest in quality performing arts education, we’re not just nurturing future performers; we’re developing resilient, emotionally intelligent, and academically capable individuals ready to face tomorrow’s challenges.

In our rapidly changing world, the skills fostered through performing arts education - creativity, collaboration, emotional intelligence, and adaptability - are more valuable than ever. It’s time, in Australia, we gave performing arts education the prominence it deserves in our educational framework. I’m doing my part in my school here on the Coffs Coast.

new horizons Exploring in 2025

From improving physical health to travelling the world or developing new skills, Southern Cross University is helping students and the community tackle their New Year’s resolutions.

Coffs Harbour researchers have launched a free 12-month online program aimed at getting adults across Australia more active in 2025.

Open to Move* is designed to support people to increase their physical activity and stick with a more active lifestyle long-term. The program is open to eligible adults aged between 18 and 69 years of all fitness levels. Participants receive 12 months of regular free support, including six months of individualised mentoring with a physical activity researcher, through online one-to-one Zoom meetings, with activity tracking via an app, all the while aiming to help increase their physical activity.

Lead researcher Professor Christian Swann said he was proud to launch the program.

“It’s an exciting project designed by some of the world’s leading physical activity researchers, and we hope it’ll help people who are trying to get more active,” he said.

“Best of all, we may even be able to help people achieve their New Year’s resolutions in 2025!”

Professor Swann is the research lead for the Physical Activity, Sport and Exercise Research (PASER) group in the Faculty of Health at Southern Cross University.

The project is supported by the Australian Government through the Australian Research Council’s Discovery Project scheme

(DP240101163).

It is led by Southern Cross University in partnership with the University of Wollongong, the University of Southern Queensland, University of New South Wales, the University of British Columbia, the University of Lincoln, and the University of South Carolina, and the 10,000 steps program.

*Open to Move has been approved by the Human Research Ethics Committee at Southern Cross University (HREC 2024/088). Check eligibility and register your interest: opentomove.com.au

GOING GLOBAL WITH NEW COLOMBO PLAN SCHOLARSHIPS

Four Southern Cross students have received a prestigious New Colombo Plan Scholarship to travel and study

The grant, an initiative of the Australian Government to foster exchange and connection between Australia and the Indo-Pacific, will allow the students to study and undertake internships for up to 19 months.

Bachelor of Education student Feenix Wilson said they are excited and grateful to receive a New Colombo Plan scholarship to live and study in Mongolia.

“I’m looking forward to volunteering teaching English and to see how their education system works and how we can share our pedagogies,” Feenix said.

Bachelor of Science (Marine Systems) student Rosie Stoneley said she was very excited to receive the call she would be going to Fiji and other Pacific islands to expand her experience and impact in coral reef research.

“I’m really excited to continue researching coral reef science. I’m hoping to do an internship with a research station or with someone working on coral restoration projects,” said Rosie.

“I am eager to engage with the vibrant local cultures, communicate in new languages, immerse myself in island communities, and gain insights into how they conduct coral reef research.

“It’s incredible to get these kinds of opportunities and to travel to these places as an undergraduate student.”

Bachelor of Social Work student Angelique Gil will be using the scholarship to study at the University of the South Pacific in Fiji.

“I feel overwhelmed with joy and gratitude and also really proud of myself for trying. This privilege of studying abroad allows me to learn from and connect with other cultures to grow to be the best social worker I can be,” she said.

“On a personal level, it is an opportunity to reconnect to my cultural roots in Fiji, creating long-lasting memories and relationships to inform and enrich my personal and professional future.”

NEW YEAR, NEW COURSES

Southern Cross University will o er new degrees in Physiotherapy, Veterinary Technology and Medical Laboratory Science in 2025.

The Bachelor of Physiotherapy will launch at the Coffs Harbour campus in March, responding to the high demand for physiotherapists in the region and beyond.

“In Coffs Harbour, there is an increased population which, in turn, increases the demand for health services. With an aging population, we need more physiotherapists to be able to support people to achieve a healthier lifestyle through active movement and exercise,” said Professor of Physiotherapy at Southern Cross, Maria Constantinou.

The Bachelor of Veterinary Technology also commences this year at the Northern Rivers campus. Veterinary Technologists assist with the clinical care

and welfare of animal patients by taking x-rays, analysing blood and urine samples, administering medication, and performing medical care, plus simple procedures such as dental descaling and polishing.

“The research profile, teaching approach and location combine to create a unique opportunity for veterinary training in the Northern Rivers. It’s ideal to have graduates that come from the regions and want to stay in the regions – this is where demand is the greatest for veterinary professionals,” says Professor Jon Hill, Executive Dean of the Faculty of Science and Engineering.

Other new courses in 2025 include the Bachelor of Medical Laboratory Science, offered at the Gold Coast campus.

e IWD Co s Coast Woman of the Year Award, presented annually at the IWD Breakfast since 2015, recognises and honours the amazing contributions of women in our local area.

This year, from a large field of nominees, six inspirational women have been selected as finalists. The winner will receive $1,500 with the runner-up receiving $1,000, both cash awards to further their endeavours.

The winner and runner-up will both be announced at the Coffs Coast IWD Breakfast, to be held on Friday 7th March 2025 at the Coffs Harbour Racing Club and Function Centre.

Keynote Speaker, Michelle McFadyen, is an energising and impactful public speaker with a story that proves that progress isn’t about perfection; it’s about embracing fear and challenging the status quo. Blyde Neser, HR consultant and leadership mentor will be our master of ceremonies.

The six finalists, in alphabetical order, are: TIGA CROSS

As Managing Director of the Coffs Coast Wildlife Sanctuary, Tiga’s leadership is deeply driven by a passion for both community enrichment and environmental stewardship. Faced with the Dolphin Marine Conservation Park’s potential

closure, Tiga decided to put everything on the line and led a successful campaign to raise funds to save the Coffs Coast destination in October 2023.

Since that time Tiga has transformed the sanctuary into a not-for-profit organisation, developing local partnerships with organisations such as Rotary Coffs Harbour, WIRES, NSW Office of Environment and Heritage, Southern Cross University and TAFE NSW to support educational programs and research that connects future leaders to practical, community-focused experiences. Through her visionary leadership she is inspiring the next generation of wildlife ambassadors as well as creating a lasting impact on both the wildlife and the Coffs Coast community.

Multicultural Health Clinical Nurse, Michele Greenwood, runs the Refugee Health Clinic in Coffs Harbour. She has worked tirelessly for more than two decades advocating for the health and wellbeing of the refugee community in our region.

Since 2000, Michele has been at the forefront

of developing and delivering essential healthcare services tailored to the unique needs of refugees. Noticing the healthcare challenges faced by refugees who could not find suitable community health services, Michele established the Coffs Harbour Refugee Health Clinic in 2006, a pivotal moment that has since provided comprehensive health assessments, vaccinations, and specialist referrals for refugees and asylum seekers.

She has been a steady base for refugees arriving in our area and having to navigate a new health system: from finding the appropriate health service or specialist, organising health expos, and undertaking education sessions.

MAGGIE HOLLEY & AKASHA HOLLEY

an you tell us about your business?

Maggie: JumpStart Matrix (JSM) started in 2009 as a website design business that shifted quickly to being a certified ‘Google Partner’ Digital Marketing Agency. Whilst JSM can do anything needed to get a business up and online, we specialise in Google.

From our client’s Google Business Profile Page for local business results, SEO & SEM (Search Engine Optimisation & Marketing) and Google Ads Campaigns, there really is no better “Bang for your Buck’ platform out there to deliver traffic and sales!

Akasha: I got my start in 2021 as part of the Jumpstart Matrix Team. I help with graphics, videos and content writing (articles, client presentations etc), as well as some of the more technical side of website construction. I love being part of the family business!

What’s your favourite part of the work you do?

Maggie: Making a real difference in people’s lives by creating business success. With skills and experience you only get from the “School of Life”, I love working with people one-onone. No business, website or niche is ever the

same! I love learning every day. No boredom here.

Akasha: Having done training as a Visual Artist, I find it so satisfying to use my skills to create content, graphics, images, videos, logos etc to help people and their business.

Who is your greatest influence in business?

Maggie: My technical business partner Alan. He is amazingly knowledgeable and resourceful and he never quits. Plus, many others have influenced me, across a spectrum of mindset shifts, creative and technical experts, as there are so many moving parts to the work we do.

Akasha: I would definitely have to say my Mum, Maggie, both in business and in my life in general. She has been through some tough times as a single mum, but she has shown me that anything is possible if you are willing to put in the time and hard work. She’s a truly inspiring woman.

What do you love about living and working on the Coffs Coast?

Maggie: After many years based in Sydney and working around the world, the balance of work and life has shifted for the better living on the beautiful Coffs Coast. I felt my stress level drop as soon as I moved here and I am excited about the potential for business growth!

Akasha: The best thing about Coffs is the

people, first and foremost. The community is so welcoming and there is opportunity here if you ask for it. Coffs has lots of great council funded events and training for small businesses, and a strong support network. What piece of advice would you give women making their way in the business world?

Maggie: Back yourself! Hold onto your values and be prepared for that bumpy ride. You will need resilience and discipline. But get excited, as you’re about to change your life. Surround yourself with experienced mentors, as they will help you with what you don’t know right now.

Akasha: If you aren’t confident to start with, that’s natural, it takes a bit of time to get there. Just show up and give it your best, honest effort.

FOR AFFINITY EDUCATION GROUP’S

BIG WIN BREE

WHITE

“Early Education is my core value and most important motivation.”

Being announced as Affinity Education Group’s Best Centre Manager came as a genuine surprise for Coffs Harbour local Bree White, Centre Manager for Affinity Education Group, which operates Milestones Early Learning Emerald Beach.

Speaking from Gumbaynggirr Country land, Bree said she was ‘surprised and then proud’ to learn of her nomination, progression to state finalist and the national winner in the 2024 Affinity Awards which were announced in late December.

“Working for a provider as large as Affinity was not something I expected but the benefits for our centre and for my own career have been amazing,” said Bree.

Bree’s career began 20 years ago when she commenced in Melbourne as an after-school junior.

After a ‘spontaneous move’ to the warmer

weather of Noosa, Bree completed her Diploma and then managed to qualify as an Early Childhood Teacher in 2013 while working full time as a preschool teacher in Inverell.

For family and lifestyle relocation to Coffs Harbour, Bree was working for a private childcare provider when Affinity Education Group acquired her Emerald Beach based centre in 2021.

“I was trained in new systems that helped me run my centre in a much more professional way, and given access to dedicated people to support our Quality and Early Education goals. Affinity’s Operations Manager and State Manager are incredible women who I admire and who take the time to visit and support me in our centre.”

“Since joining Affinity two of my team have worked their way up from traineeships with fully funded qualifications provided by the Affinity Learning Academy, and our Assistant

Centre Manager Abby is also benefitting from a scholarship to complete her Early Childhood Teaching studies at university, all at no cost to her.”

A proud mum of four children ranging in age between 8 and 21, Bree says her passion for mentoring and leadership has been fostered by Affinity, and during 2025, she has accepted a temporary career progression step to Area Manager, supporting her sister Milestones Early Learning centres in North Boambee, Coffs Harbour, Woolgoolga and South Grafton.

“It’s the people in our centres who inspire me – early childhood education is my core value and my motivation every day – with Affinity behind us and our Lifelong Learning Curriculum offering Australia’s most advanced early education, we are able to support children to set them up with positive education and skills to last them a lifetime.”

STATE OF PLAY

with COFFS HARBOUR MP GURMESH SINGH

The start of a new school year heralds new beginnings, new opportunities and high hopes for students and their families on the Coffs Coast. Returning to the classroom was always an exciting time for me when I was at school.

I have fond memories of anticipating lessons resuming, the school community coming back together and all that went with it - the smell and texture of the new books, the catch-ups with my mates about the summer holiday adventures we enjoyed, and that fresh-start feeling.

Right throughout my schooling, which I’m proud to say was right here on the Coffs Coast, I could not have wished for more caring or supportive teachers.

I will always be indebted to them for their guidance, mentoring and advice, and for teaching valuable lessons which helped prepare me for adult life.

Excellent teachers who are committed to, and passionate about education are also guiding the new generation of Coffs Coast students – whether they’re passing through the school gates for the first time or they’re completing their schooling and embarking on the next chapter in their lives.

All students, regardless of where they live, deserve to have access to quality education, so it’s important to invest in improved education

outcomes from childcare level right through schooling to vocational and tertiary learning. We know that affordable and quality education is a key driver to keeping families in and attracting new residents to regional NSW. Education will always be a cornerstone of developing a progressive, innovative and prosperous community on the Coffs Coast and beyond.

That’s why I will always support our local teachers and our local schools in the vital roles they play in the lives of thousands of young people and their families across our beautiful region.

wide range of essentials like school uniforms, shoes, bags, textbooks, and stationery, these vouchers ensured that our kids were wellequipped for the start of the school year.

From the basics like exercise books, pens, and pencils to more specific items like sports gear, art supplies, and even protective equipment for specialised classes, these vouchers had it all covered.

Imagine the strain of having to budget for every pair of socks, every pencil case, and every textbook, especially when you’re already working around the clock to make ends meet.

What is disappointing, however, is how the NSW and Federal Labor Governments haven’t quite stepped up to give our families the costof-living breaks they so desperately need. What’s particularly disappointing is seeing the Active Kids vouchers get chopped. These vouchers weren’t just about saving money, they were helping our kids stay active and healthy. Also, the State Government’s cuts to the back-to-school vouchers have been a real blow to many families in our community. These vouchers were more than just a financial relief; they were a crucial support system. Covering a

With the vouchers gone, parents are left to shoulder the full cost of these necessities. Imagine the strain of having to budget for every pair of socks, every pencil case, and every textbook, especially when you’re already working around the clock to make ends meet.

This isn’t just about a few extra dollars on the shopping list; it’s about the stress and the tough choices families have to make. Do you skimp on the quality of your child’s school bag, or do you cut back on something else at home? It’s a hard pill to swallow, knowing that these vital supports have been withdrawn when they’re needed most.

School should be about the start of something new and great fun, not stress and stretched budgets.

IT’S TIME FOR CHANGE IN COWPER
The countdown to the 2025 election is officially underway, and I’m honoured to once again have been selected by our community to run as your Independent Candidate.

Our community has faced decades of neglect from career politicians and major parties. I’m here to focus on the issues that matter most to us - cost of living, housing affordability, healthcare, reliable mobile reception, and protecting the places we love.

We can’t rely on the same people who created these problems to fix them - we need real change, with representation that’s truly powered by our community.

Why I’m Running

I’m running because I’m tired of watching things get worse. Our healthcare system is crumbling, the cost of basics like groceries and petrol keeps climbing, and we’re yet to see meaningful climate action. Meanwhile, housing is becoming increasingly unaffordable, mobile reception is patchy at best, and many of the places we love are under increasing threat.

As a nurse, healthcare leader, and emergency responder, I’ve spent my life advocating for people in their most vulnerable moments - whether it’s providing

compassionate care at the bedside, leading teams through healthcare crises, or coordinating emergency responses during times of disaster. These experiences have taught me the importance of collaboration, resilience, and always putting people first.

I know how to listen deeply, act decisively, and solve problems under pressure. It’s that experience and dedication I aim to bring to representing this beautiful region.

A Fresh Approach to Politics

For too long, our voices have been ignored. Career politicians have allowed housing affordability to spiral out of control, neglected healthcare, and failed to deliver critical infrastructure.

the Royal Commission into veteran suicide while doubling investment in public housing in Tasmania.

As an independent, I’m not tied to party factions or big business. My only obligation is to you - the people of Cowper. Over the past few months, I’ve met with veterans, farmers, sports coaches, and retirees to hear their concerns. Your ideas are the foundation of this campaign, and together we’re building a platform that reflects Cowper’s real priorities.

For too long, our voices have been ignored. Career politicians have allowed housing affordability to spiral out of control, neglected healthcare, and failed to deliver critical infrastructure.

Independents, however, have a proven track record of delivering for their communities. Helen Haines secured over 50 mobile towers for her region, and Jacqui Lambie pushed for

What I Stand For

I’m still building my policy platform based on your feedback, but these are some of my priorities:

• Healthcare: Fight for more funding for hospitals, aged care, and mental health services. Cut wait times and improve rural access.

• Housing: Build more affordable homes,

expand public housing, and create construction apprenticeships.

• Cost of Living: Hold corporations accountable for price gouging, and redirect handouts to services like childcare, education, and healthcare.

This year, with even more volunteers, supporters, and ideas from across Cowper, we’re ready to take the next step and make history.

• Connectivity: Eliminate mobile blackspots and ensure reliable, affordable internet for homes and businesses.

• NDIS: Simplify applications, ensure timely support, and uphold dignity for people with disabilities.

• Domestic Violence: Strengthen local services, create safe spaces, and educate for safer communities.

• Local Growers: Invest in food manufacturing, support growers, and strengthen supply chains to expand local markets

• Climate Action: Cut emissions and prepare communities for floods and bushfires.

• Protecting the places we love: Safeguard natural landscapes and promote

sustainable tourism to preserve our region for generations to come. Last election, over 1,500 of us made Cowper the most marginal Nationals electorate in the country. We knocked on doors, made phone calls, and spoke to people about the issues that mattered, and it worked.

This year, with even more volunteers, supporters, and ideas from across Cowper, we’re ready to take the next step and make history.

Why We Deserve Better

Cowper is an extraordinary place, but we face significant challenges. We’re one of the poorest electorates in Australia, with high rates of chronic health conditions and low educational attainment. We’re also on the front line of climate change, with increasing risks of floods and bushfires.

We need leadership that understands these challenges and fights for solutions tailored to our region. That’s exactly what I’m here to do.

Let’s Create a Future We All Share

This campaign is about creating a better future for our community. From fixing our healthcare system to tackling the housing crisis, supporting local farmers, and protecting the places we love, we’re building a platform that reflects the values and needs of our region.

Owen LEDNOR

Can you tell us about your career journey that led you to become the General Manager of this retirement and nursing home?

My career began as a registered nurse, where I worked extensively in aging settings, developing a deep understanding of clinical care and the unique needs of older adults. Over the years, I transitioned into leadership roles, including governance and consulting positions, where I focused on enhancing aging service outcomes. This progression allowed me to combine my clinical expertise with strategic management, ultimately leading to my current role as the General Manager at The Shoreline.

GENERAL MANAGER OF THE SHORELINE

What inspired you to work in the field of elderly care and management?

The desire to compassionately care for others has always been central to my goals. Finding a career where I could genuinely make a positive impact on individuals' lives led me to aged care. Supporting older people offers the chance to ensure dignity, connection, and quality of life during such an important stage.

I hold a Bachelor of Nursing, Graduate Certificate in Leadership and Management and a Master of Nursing majoring in Leadership and Management. I think all these assist, but at the end of the day the core skill all people need is a desire to create true connections. The Shoreline has excelled at this to date and as the next stage of our retirement living begins to sell this year, we will continue to do so.

Can you describe a typical day in your role as the General Manager?

A typical day involves a mix of strategic planning, team meetings, and resident interactions. I review operational reports, oversee staff activities, and ensure compliance with regulatory standards. I also dedicate time to engaging with residents and families to understand their experiences and needs.

A typical day involves a mix of strategic planning, team meetings, and resident interactions. I review operational reports, oversee sta activities, and ensure compliance with regulatory standards.

What qualifications or training do you have that you believe are essential for your role?

What are the key responsibilities you handle on a daily basis?

My primary responsibilities include overseeing facility operations, ensuring high quality care, supporting staff, and implementing initiatives that align with our vision. A big next step for my role is working alongside all our new residents that will be moving into our wonderful luxury environments when Watermark Apartments is ready.

How do you ensure the quality of care provided to residents?

We maintain rigorous standards by regularly monitoring clinical outcomes, conducting audits, and seeking feedback from residents and families. We also invest in staff training and technology solutions, like real-time data monitoring, to enhance care delivery. We realise that we don’t get everything right all the time, but we work hand-in-hand with individuals and their families to get it right and improve. What programs or activities do you have in place that promotes social interaction among residents?

The importance of sustainability is a key trend shaping the industry, whether that is environmental or financial sustainability, this needs to be a focus for us.

We take a holistic approach, offering personalised care plans that address clinical needs and lifestyle goals. Activities promoting physical fitness, mental stimulation, and emotional resilience are integrated into daily life, alongside support from our multidisciplinary care team. We are lucky that we have built an excellent community of staff, residents and friends/families all of which make up the broad support networks available to our residents. What trends do you see shaping the future of retirement and nursing homes?

space, talk to staff and residents, complete the “vibe check”. If something doesn’t feel right in your gut, dig deeper.

Starting the process early can transform what might feel like a crisis decision into an exciting step toward a vibrant new chapter. Our team is always available to provide tours and support families in making informed choices.

What do you consider the most rewarding aspect of being a general manager in this field?

The Shoreline offers a wide range of activities, including group exercise classes, hobby workshops, and community events. Our retirement village residents also enjoy access to shared spaces like gardens, the pool, our café, BBQ areas, our cinema and of course our stunning library that encourages social engagement.

How do you incorporate feedback from residents and families into your management practices?

Feedback drives our continuous improvement. For example, feedback from residents in our existing village has shaped key features of Watermark Apartments, ensuring they reflect the evolving needs of our community.

Can you share how you support residents' physical, emotional, and mental well-being?

Increasing demand for personalised care is something we already see and expect to see going into the future. We also already know that the integration of advanced technologies in the aging dynamic is occurring and will only get bigger. The importance of sustainability is a key trend shaping the industry, whether that is environmental or financial sustainability, this needs to be a focus for us. People want vibrant communities, not just “care”, and we are proud of the fact that we already work to those standards in preparation for the future. What advice would you give to families when choosing a retirement or nursing home for their loved ones?

Families should look for aging environments with a strong reputation, a focus on person-centered care, and transparent communication. Visit the

The most rewarding aspect is witnessing residents thrive and families feel reassured about their loved ones’ safety. Working alongside a team that positively impacts lives is incredibly fulfilling.

How do you handle the emotional aspects of working in a retirement and nursing home setting?

Emotional resilience comes from focusing on the positive impact we make and supporting one another as a team. Regular debriefs and self-care practices are essential, which is often easier said than done!

What motivates you to continue leading this facility and caring for its residents?

The combination of resident happiness, community growth, and our team’s dedication motivates me every day. With Watermark Apartments on the horizon, I look forward to continuing to raise the benchmarks in retirement living.

Thanks Owen.

REYES

DIRECTOR OF CARE AT THE SHORELINE

Cprofessional background

and what led you to the role of Director of Care?

I am a registered nurse by profession and started in a local Coffs Harbour care homer. From there, I was able to step up slowly in my career leading towards a more managerial role. I guess what lead me into this role is taking a challenge and trying to make a difference.

What inspired you to work in the field of elder care and management?

I grew up with my grandmother and she was the one who influenced me to be in this field. Working in aged care makes me feel like I am getting closer to home. Being in the management role for me is a bonus as I never expected that my career path would be Director of Care. I remember saying to myself years ago that if I am given an opportunity, I will do things differently and make an impression by connecting to the residents, families, and staff, no matter how difficult the task may be.

What qualifications and training do you have that prepare you for your position?

I had completed my Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing in the Philippines and then underwent the International Registration of Overseas Nurses in Perth to obtain my nursing registration in Australia. Prior to the management role, I was a Registered Nurse in charge which allowed me to work closely with the Clinical Care Coordinators and Facility Managers. I stepped up to the CCC role, and had to work closely with Quality Managers to better understand the Aged Care Legislation and the quality standards. I also was given an opportunity to be able to undergo leadership and management training which allowed me to understand the management role.

Can you describe your primary responsibilities as the Director of Care?

As a Director of Care, my primary responsibilities are overseeing the clinical care for our residents, providing support to the team to maintain a good working environment and ensuring the safety of both residents and staff in the facility.

How do you ensure that the highest standards of care are maintained for residents?

As the Aged Care Quality and Safety Commission has provided all aged care facilities standards to follow, we make sure that we comply with these guidelines and working with our residents in providing person-centered care for them.

What is your approach to creating and implementing care plans for residents?

Our approach is to work collaboratively with our residents, families, general practitioners and our staff through case conferencing. This approach enables us to establish relationships between our residents and us. Our care plans are made around our residents’ needs and safety.

How do you assess the needs of residents and customise their care accordingly?

Our assessments are based on a personcentered approach which allows us to know our residents, meet their needs, and support them safely with their daily activities.

What programs or services do you have in place to promote emotional and mental well-being among residents?

Despite having a busy schedule, I always make time to connect with them and hearing them say, “I appreciate what you do”, makes my day better.

Our lifestyle team organises a monthly calendar of activities for our residents where they can attend any activities they choose and this allows them to socialise and improve their well-being. We are also actively involving our residents around these activities through their monthly meetings for any suggestions and feedback.

How do you handle family communication regarding resident care and progress?

Regular updates are provided to the families either via phone call and/or email. The communication can either be a random phone call from a family member who is listed as a contact or through our case conferences and residents of the day. We encourage families and residents to provide us with feedback for us to improve.

How do you support and develop your team to provide excellent care?

We support our team by providing them with ongoing competencies and education with assistance from our education coordinator. We encourage upskilling by promoting an internal scholarship program.

What steps do you take to ensure

compliance with health and safety standards in your facility?

We conduct audits, risk assessments, and reporting which allows us to identify our gaps and trends within the facility. From the information we have gathered, we then make an action plan for improvement and compliance with the regulations.

What trends or developments do you see shaping the future of retirement and nursing homes?

Retirement living and aged care facilities have improved over the years. It mainly focuses on creating more diversified activities with an environment that is more encouraging for all residents to participate.

How can technology play a role in enhancing care for residents?

Technology improves the care that we provide for the residents as it enables better data collection and improves assessment methods, especially for those who have an impairment. What advice would you give to families looking for the best care options for their loved ones?

Conduct research, book a tour or a meeting at the facility and always ask questions. These are

simple but always worthwhile, especially if you want the best care options for your loved ones. What do you find most fulfilling about your role as Director of Care?

The most fulfilling thing is making a difference to our residents, their families, and our staff by being there for them. Despite having a busy schedule, I always make time to connect with them and hearing them say, “I appreciate what you do”, makes my day better.

How do you maintain your passion for working in this field, especially during challenging times?

The one thing that keeps me passionate about my work is the support I have received from everyone. Having a good team makes it better to manage the challenges.

I am always a believer that these challenges are only to test you. They will make you learn to grow as a better person.

What message would you like to share with the community about the importance of quality care for the elderly?

The quality of care for the elderly does not only mean clinical but a holistic approach. During this time, they would like to be supported by everyone, especially their family as this is a big change in their life.

Thanks Aurielle.

How has the demand for retirement villages changed in recent years, particularly postpandemic?

In Australia our population of retirees is growing, and it’s estimated to reach 15-20 per cent of the overall population by 2030. That amounts to around 320,000 Aussies retiring every year; mostly in the generation of baby boomers. Many of these people are focusing on a luxury retirement lifestyle of freedom, community connection and making their own choices around planning for their future. We all think about our future, however we’ve been particularly reminded of the importance of realising our dreams and living our lives to the fullest since the pandemic when we were all restricted in so many ways and the future was so uncertain. This was especially true for our population of retirees. Consequently, the demand for retirement living is very high, especially here at The Shoreline.

Can you tell us about the up-and-coming final stage of The Shoreline Luxury Independent Living that’s about to be released?

Our first release of the new luxurious Watermark Apartments is looming and the great thing is, you can easily see the building. Now at its full height, in the middle of our retirement precinct and very soon, distinct red numbers will indicate where each level of the

Nothing has been overlooked in this sophisticated architecturally designed residence, which consists of a mix of beautifully appointed two and three bedroom apartments that are both spacious and effortlessly stylish. Many feature sensational coastal views of Macauley’s Headland, Park Beach, Muttonbird Island, the marina, the jetty and hinterland views; these especially, will be highly sought after.

This final part of our development will be your last opportunity to enjoy the luxury of options around choosing what’s important to you. With the one hundred and one apartments and villas already built being completely sold out, The Watermark apartments will be in high demand; don’t miss your chance!
