CELEBRATING 25 YEARS OF BUSINESS ON THE COFFS COAST
MLocal Business Owner/Chef Ma Donovan is celebrating 25 years of business on the Co s Coast this month, and with Donovans Surf Club Restaurant & Bar, the new Donovans Link Eatery and Grounds, and some other exciting new ventures on the go, he doesn’t seem to be slowing down anytime soon!
att, can you tell us a bit about your journey and how long you've been in business on the Coffs Coast?
I'm very excited to say that April marks 25 years of myself being in business on the Coffs Coast. I’ve had the opportunity to establish and run restaurants at two iconic venues in Coffs Harbour - the Coffs Harbour Deepsea Fishing Club and the Coffs Harbour Surf Lifesaving Club. Currently, I’m working at a third venue, Donovans Link Eatery and Grounds.
None of this would be possible without the dedication of all those who have worked in our venues, my family, and of course, our loyal customers, who I cannot thank enough. It’s been quite the rollercoaster journey, but I’d do it all again in a heartbeat.
You've mentioned diversifying over the
years. How has your business evolved, especially during tough times like the COVID-19 pandemic?
We’ve certainly had to diversify the business over time, especially during economic downturns, to adjust and make way for growth. Over the years, we’ve changed in many ways, but we’ve always had our loyal customers and clientele in mind while adapting to those changes. During COVID, for example, we delivered my famous seafood chowder to customers' doors, along with other offerings to keep things fresh and engaging. It was a tough period, but it allowed us to connect with customers in a different way.
We also introduced Donovans Fresh Flower Bar and our own branded Donovans Lager. My family has been incredible too, helping to set up a YouTube channel featuring “ChefMa
about that?
Absolutely! Along the way, we’ve branched out and developed our own brand of apparel, and now we have a full range of merchandise available for sale.
You’ve expanded your business beyond just the restaurant. Can you tell us more
We also introduced Donovans Fresh Flower Bar and our own branded Donovans Lager. My family has been incredible, too, helping to set up a YouTube channel featuring “ChefMatt,” along with a presence on Instagram, Facebook, and TikTok. On these platforms, we bring back the family dinner on Sunday nights, cooking together while enjoying the company of the kids and grandkids. It’s not uncommon for us to have no fewer than twenty people for dinner each Sunday!

What would you say is one of the most rewarding aspects of running your business in the hospitality industry?
One of the most rewarding aspects of hospitality for me is the community I get to engage with every day. Some of these people I’ve been cooking for since 1988, when I was a young apprentice down the jetty at Avanti Restaurant under Swiss chef Martin Moser, who was a great mentor to me. It’s amazing to see familiar faces year after year and even now as we continue to build relationships within the community.
Hospitality is known for its demanding hours. How have you approached a worklife balance for yourself and your team?
It’s true - hospitality can be demanding, with long hours and challenging conditions, especially back in the day. But this experience has instilled in me the importance of creating the best possible working environment for my team. We’re focused on offering a good worklife balance for everyone, which is something I really care about. We’re always looking to create roles for the right person and keep bringing the next generation of young chefs, cooks, and restaurant staff into the fold.
What’s next for Donovans, we hear there are some exciting new developments happening.
This year, the Donovans team has been working on a fresh new look, new branding, and a new website. We’re also launching some exciting promotions for our existing customers, members, and friends. These will give people the chance to enjoy discounts at our venues. A special event this month at the Surf Club is our members/locals/ nippers night.
course, we’ll be hosting some pop-up dinners as well.
Let’s talk about your newest venture, Donovans Link Eatery and Grounds, what makes this venue special?
is month, it’s all about finding the greatest toastie of all time, so stay tuned, and of course, we’ll be hosting some pop-up dinners as well.
It’s an opportunity to come down every Wednesday night from 5:30 pm for dinner or drinks, enjoy some fundraising promotions, and support the Coffs Harbour Surf Lifesaving Club.
We’re also planning some fun chef challenges, like our pancake challenge from last year. This month, it’s all about finding the greatest toastie of all time, so stay tuned, and of
Donovans Link Eatery and Grounds is our latest venture, and I’m incredibly excited about it. Located at The Link in Toormina, it’s a licensed venue that’s open seven days a week for breakfast and lunch. We have a bakery section that the chefs are really proud of, and a gelato bar where you can treat yourself to something sweet. The venue itself is gorgeous; set in manicured gardens with a lake, wildlife, and a children’s playground. It’s a great spot for families and anyone who enjoys nature.
We’ve also worked hard to create a menu that has something for everyone. We focus on sourcing a wide range of fresh, local ingredients from the grounds, which adds a
unique touch to our offerings. Whether you're in the mood for a hearty breakfast, a light lunch, or a sweet treat from our bakery, there’s always something on the menu to satisfy your cravings.
It’s all about creating a welcoming atmosphere and offering food that is not only delicious but also supports the local community.
Can you share some of the exciting events you have planned for Donovans Link Eatery and Grounds in the coming months?
Absolutely! We’ve got a lot of exciting things in store. In the coming months, we’ll be hosting dinners with live music, which is something we’re really looking forward to. We’ve also planned a special Mother’s Day event, a kids' movie night, and a picnic day on the grounds which will be a fantastic familyfriendly experience. The venue is perfect for these kinds of events, and we can’t wait to bring the community together to enjoy great food, music, and fun. As always, be sure to keep an eye on our socials for all the details and updates!
Thanks Matt.

SHANNON ROSE IS AN UPAND-COMING BOXER WHO IS ABOUT TO MAKE HER PROFESSIONAL BOXING DEBUT IN MAY, FIGHTING FOR THE VICTORIAN MIDDLEWEIGHT TITLE AGAINST ALANA MOUSSA. SHANNON IS IN THE THICK OF PREPARATION FOR THE FIGHT, AND IS HOPING TO ESTABLISH HERSELF AS PART OF A NEW WAVE OF FEMALE FIGHTERS MAKING THEIR MARK IN THE SPORT.
Hi Shannon. Can you tell us a bit about your start in boxing. What was it that first drew you to the sport?
After 18 years of dancing, I was looking for a new hobby. My younger brother was already boxing, so I decided to give it a try, plus my grandfather was a professional boxer, and it felt like a way to connect with him. As soon as I stepped into the ring, I fell in love with the sport, and before I knew it, I was training almost every day.
You were originally training for an amateur boxing debut, how did it feel when you got the call to turn pro on short notice? Was it an immediate “yes,” or did you need time to process it? The call to go pro was completely unexpected. I had spent the last 5-6 months focused on bodybuilding, so I’d only been boxing recreationally. While I had always dreamed of turning pro, I didn’t think it would come this soon, but this particular fight was an opportunity I couldn’t pass up. What has the transition back into full-
time boxing training been like?
Coming back to boxing full-time has been a big shift, but I’m confident we’ve made all the right adjustments to my training. My weight is on track and my sparring has been really good.
Stepping straight into the professional ranks is a massive challenge, how have you mentally and physically prepared for this moment?
Turning pro is definitely a huge challenge both physically and mentally. I’ve been focusing on pushing myself out of my comfort zone. Mental toughness is crucial in the ring, so I’ve been making sure I dig deep when things get tough. I’ve always committed to anything I set my mind to, but I know I have to get my body and mind to peak performance for this fight.
Continued over...
You’ve sparred with Alana Moussa before, what do you think will be the biggest challenge facing her in a professional bout?
I’ve always commi ed to anything I set my mind to, but I know I have to get my body and mind to peak performance for this fight.
I’d sparred Alana a few times when I was living in Victoria. She’s a tough, aggressive fighter and she has had both pro and exhibition fights, whereas this will be my first. This means the pressure is on her to walk straight through me. I see this as an advantage. If I can put in a really good performance I’ll be happy no matter how it plays out.
Can you walk us through a typical day in your life right now, balancing work and training?
My day starts at 6am with an hour of boxing and hill sprints, then I head to my regular job as a hairdresser. After work, I do a longer training session that includes cardio, pad work, and sparring. We’ve been travelling
to Fidel Tukel’s gym, Fiteklub, on the Gold Coast once a fortnight for sparring and I’ve started sparring some girls at Zion Boxing in Coffs Harbour also. What aspect of your game do you feel has improved the most during this fight camp?
This camp, I’ve seen significant improvement in both my cardio and mental toughness. Despite having to do a big weight cut, my training is on point, and I’ve been able to maintain my strength. Mentally, I’ve grown a lot; I'm breaking through old limitations and challenging myself to push through moments where I’d have bailed out in the past.
Women’s boxing is growing in popularity, how does it feel to be part of this new wave of female fighters making their mark?
It’s incredible to witness the growth of women’s boxing, and I’m truly grateful to be
part of it. Female fighters are gaining more recognition, and it’s exciting to show that boxing is a sport for everyone, not just men. Do you have any female fighters you look up to, either in Australia or internationally?
Right now, I really admire Skye Nicholson, an Australian Olympian who’s now making waves as a professional. I also look up to Jess Messina from Port Macquarie, she’s an amazing fighter and the current Australian Welterweight Champion. We sparred a while back but I don’t think she left first gear. What are your hopes and aspirations for the future? Is this the start of a longterm professional boxing career for you?
I hope that my pro debut marks the beginning of an exciting boxing career. I’m aiming for a strong performance in May and hoping to secure more fights closer to home in the Gold Coast or Brisbane. This is just the start, and I feel fortunate to have such a great opportunity and I’m excited to see where this journey takes me.
Thanks Shannon.

BREAK THE CYCLE APPAREL
label Break e
Remella Carriage started his
Cycle Apparel to remove stigma and make space for conversations around breaking the negative cycles in our lives. His message is ‘nothing changes if nothing changes, it starts with you.’
Can you tell us about what led to the creation of Break The Cycle Apparel?
As a 27 year old Gumbaynggirr man I had suffered a lot of trauma growing up. I saw relatives and friends abuse drugs/alcohol that lead them to committing suicide, lived in housing commission and had a broken family. My father was incarcerated most of my life so I was raised by a single mother with 2 little sisters and we never had much, but we had each other. I always believed there was a calling or a purpose out there and there was more to life than continuing down the same path. I just didn’t know what this purpose was, until I decided I wanted to start a clothing brand. I brainstormed ways on how I can raise awareness of these negative “cycles” that we keep repeating and encourage people to write their own story, that’s when I came up with Break The Cycle Apparel.
What does "breaking the cycle" mean
to you personally, and why is it such an important message to share?
Breaking the cycle is a very personal topic to me and something that I’m passionate to speak on. I believe we are all here for a purpose, and my purpose within life is to stop trauma running deep within my family and spread awareness on this topic. If I can go through it and come out the other side, why can’t you? As a society we tend to hide our feelings and emotions which can lead to many negative cycles that can lead people in the wrong direction. We want to remove the stigma and create a safe place for people to share their story and be encouraged to make positive changes they need to live a meaningful life.
How did you decide that an apparel brand was the best way to spread this message? We chose apparel because people wear clothing everyday so why not wear apparel with a meaning and purpose? I’m sure everyone sees clothing being worn everyday that doesn’t have a meaning behind it, so
why not wear ours that has a purpose and meaning behind it, with an aesthetic look!
Break The Cycle is more than just clothing - it’s a movement. Why do you think your message resonates with people?
We believe that everyone at some point in their life gets stuck in a negative cycle. These negative cycles can be anything from unhealthy eating habits or lifestyle habits to generational trauma cycles. Everyone has the power to make positive changes in their life and this is a big part of our messaging through Break the Cycle Apparel, that “It Starts With You”. Through reducing the stigma surrounding speaking about these topics, we hope that people can resonate with one another and feel supported on their journey to break the cycle, not only by us but also by the brands community.
You aim to remove stigma around deeply personal struggles. How does your brand create space for these conversations? By sharing our own personal struggles that people can relate to, this helps people to
open up and make them feel they are not alone. This has already helped spark lots of conversations through our social media pages and provided a safe space where people often share struggles they have been through and how they resonate with the brand's mission. We have also created a link that provides access to multiple established organisations that can provide professional support. The best way to access this link is through our instagram bio. Our inbox is always open for anyone that wants to share their struggles or cycles they have overcome. What kind of feedback have you received from customers who connect with your mission?
We have had a lot of positive feedback from people that resonate with our mission. People often relate to the messages and information that we share and this motivates and encourages us to keep working on expanding the community we are building, in the hope that this message will reach a larger audience. Examples of the feedback we’ve received are –
“Such respect and love for your brand. I am breaking the cycle of DV in my family and it has been bloody hard. Much love”
“I too come from a broken family and I try every day to teach my girls a life I didn’t get to have! This is why I resonate with this brand so much. Thanks for being open, it could help someone out there”
We hope that when people read the messages on the shirts it will encourage people to share their story and create conversations.
Are there any upcoming initiatives or projects to expand Break The Cycle’s impact? How do you see the brand evolving in the next few years?
Without giving too much away we are working on a few different avenues to continue expanding this message through our brand. We are looking at doing programs within schools to help educate and inspire the next generation. We're looking at possibly starting a podcast and we will aim to continue to grow our social media presence, that’s all we will give away for now!
What do you hope someone feels when they wear your designs?
We hope that people will be proud to share such an important and empowering message and also acknowledge the journey of their own life and any cycles they may have broken. We hope that when people read the messages on the shirts it will encourage people to share their story and create conversations. Do you have any dream collaborationswhether with artists, athletes, or other brands that align with your mission?
We would absolutely love to have some collaborations in the future, however we want to ensure that these align with our
mission. We recognise the importance of these collaborations being people that others can relate to with their journey breaking the cycle.
Where can people find your apparel, and how can they support the movement?
We sell our apparel through our website (www.breakthecycleapparel.com.au). The website is also linked in our Instagram bio (@ breakthecycle.apparel) or if you are local to Coffs Harbour, we stock at La Spot Barber down at the Jetty village. Other ways you can support this movement is by simply following us on our social media pages, every follow, like and share helps to spread awareness. We also love seeing you tag us in your stories when you’re wearing the clothing!
Thanks Remella.
Angela Thomas is a talented local ta oo artist who has joined the team at Venus Ta oo Co here in Co s Harbour. Her designs are o en fine, feminine and whimsical, but she is always open to new ideas and welcomes any styles or ideas!
Hi Angela. What inspired you to become a tattoo artist, and how did your journey in the industry begin?
I started off doing microblading in 2017, then went on to do cosmetic tattooing (eyebrows and lips). I’ve always been quite a creative person and have used many different mediums over the years to express my creativity. Tattooing has always been something I've wanted to do. Roughly two years ago, I started doing mentor session with Mila Nascimentto (Aquarius Tattoo) and became her apprentice. When Rachel, Megan, and Mila decided to open Venus, they took me on as their apprentice which I am extremely grateful for. I still love doing cosmetic tattooing as well and always have my books open to take on new clients.
Do you specialise in a particular style of tattooing, and how has it evolved over the years?
I particularly love doing fine line geometric/ ornamental, dot work, fineline floral pieces,
and ocean inspired tattoos. In saying that though, I do love to play around with some old school style thick lines. What’s your favourite kind of tattoo to create, and why?
I do enjoy creating quite feminine and so pieces. Whether that be floral, ocean inspired, whimsical ornamental pieces, or creating beautiful goddesses that represent di erent energies.
I do enjoy creating quite feminine and soft pieces. Whether that be floral, ocean inspired, whimsical ornamental
pieces, or creating beautiful goddesses that represent different energies.
What drew you to join the team at Venus Tattoo Co studio?
Mila was already my mentor and her and the girls have created the most amazing space to work in. The environment is a fair, friendly, and safe space to work. Everyone who walks through the doors has commented on how comfortable they feel in the space. I’m really proud of what the girls have done, and will be forever grateful that I am lucky enough to be a part of something so special, and to learn from some of the best in the business!
Can you talk us through your process when working with a client on their tattoo?
We will talk about what they are wanting. Sometimes clients will send through inspo pics, or often just tell me what they are wanting to incorporate in their design. I will then draw something up with those ideas, show the client and change anything if needed until the client is happy.
Do you have any memorable client stories or pieces that stand out in your career?
One client came to me after having abdominal surgery as she had quite a large scar. She came up with the idea of making the scar look like it was a big hole, with a little person pulling back the skin, and to have creatures coming out of the hole. She already had a previous artist do the little person and the scruffy dog. She came to me wanting to add more. She loves bats, so we added three black bats flying out, a snake, and two red balloons! The previous tattoo had faded a lot, so we revamped that also. I really enjoyed doing this for my client, as it is something really different. Another one would be when I had sisters come in with an outline of a family portrait. They wanted it tattooed as a memorial tattoo for their brother who had just passed away with the words “See you in the Dreamtime” on it. This was a really emotional one and I felt very honoured that I was able to do that special piece for them.
How do you think the tattoo industry has changed over the years? Have you noticed any shifts since you started your career?
I have noticed that fine line tattoos have become very popular. People are wanting more small tattoos, rather than bigger pieces that cover a larger area of the body; more ornamental pieces, fine lines, or bold designs too.
Where can people check out your work, or get in touch?
@angelabess_tattoo and @venustattooco Thanks Angela.
HCaleb Daykin is a dedicated and talented young swimmer from Bellingen who is making a name for himself as one to watch!
i Caleb. When and how did you first get into swimming? Was there a particular moment or person that inspired you?
At my primary school swimming carnivals, I used to get age champion every year, so I decided to join a swim club and start training. At the time I lived in Wollongong, and I trained at a centre owned by Olympian Emma McKeon’s family. I remember after the Rio Olympics, I was excited when Emma and David McKeon brought in their medals to show us. Emma attended training sessions with my squad when she was in town and was a huge inspiration. During a swim clinic with David McKeon, he shared some advice that became important to me later. He explained how, as a teen, he stepped away from swimming to pursue other interests before returning, eventually making it to the Olympics. He reminded us that we are still young and that if we do step away we can work hard to return to the sport. This advice
became important to me when a shoulder injury forced me to stop swimming. I was devastated to leave the sport for a couple of years, but I remembered the advice from David and when we moved to the Mid North Coast I started swimming again. The move up here allowed me to have a fresh start and return to the sport I loved. The McKeon family remain a huge inspiration to me.
What do you love most about the sport?
What I love most about swimming is the constant drive to improve and the challenge of perfecting my races. There’s always something to refine which keeps me motivated and pushing for better performances. I also enjoy the science behind the sport and how small adjustments can make a huge difference in performance.
Do you remember your first competition? How did it feel stepping onto the blocks for the first time?
One of my early swimming memories was when I swam for the first time at Sydney Olympic Park as part of a State relay team
for my club when I was ten. I remember the excitement of being in such a huge venue and the energy of the crowd. It was a moment that made me realise how much I loved the sport and how much I wanted to be part of such big competitions.
Can you walk us through a typical day in your training routine, and are there any other things you like to do to take care of your body so you can perform at your best?
I have trained independently without a coach for the last three years. I train in the pool six days a week and in the gym three days. My swim training is based on the ultra-short race pace method, similar to US Olympic swimmer Michael Andrew’s approach. This means my sessions are designed around high-intensity, race-pace efforts with short rest intervals. A typical set might include 30x25m or 20x50m, maintaining consistency in stroke count, streamline kicks, and breathing patterns every lap. The goal is to train my body to execute race strategies with precision, even under fatigue. Beyond that, I dedicate time
to refining technical skills like dives, turns, and finishes. These details can make a crucial difference in racing, where even a fraction of a second can be the difference between qualifying for Nationals or not. In the gym, I aim for three sessions a week, focusing on strength training, and running on a treadmill to improve my aerobic fitness as most of my training is anaerobic.
What’s the hardest part of training, and how do you stay motivated?
The hardest part of training is staying motivated while training on my own. About three years ago, when the pool in Nambucca closed, I lost my coach, Geoff. He was a great coach and mentor, and I really connected with his approach. He gave me a strong technical foundation which allowed me to continue training independently in a way that I love. Without a squad or coach pushing me every day, it can be challenging to stay disciplined, but my love for competition keeps me going. Knowing that every session brings me one step closer to achieving my goals is what drives me to keep showing up and putting in the work.
Do you have a favourite stroke or event and what makes it your strongest?
Without a doubt, my favourite stroke is butterfly, and 50 fly is my absolute favourite event. I love the fast pace and the intensity. In a 50 metre race, there’s no room for error, everything has to be technically perfect, from the start and streamline to stroke efficiency and finish. I love the challenge of bringing it all together so that it’s as perfect as possible. Who are the key people supporting you in your training, coaches, family, teammates?
I love the fast pace and the intensity. In a 50 metre race, there’s no room for error, everything has to be technically perfect, from the start and streamline to stroke efficiency and finish.
Even though I’m training on my own now, I still reach out to my old coach occasionally for advice and his guidance continues to be valuable.
What are some of your proudest achievements in swimming so far?
My family plays a huge role as my cheer squad. My parents come with me to every important swim meet, offering support and encouragement. I also have friends from various swim clubs on the North Coast who have become great friends and motivators.
Some of my proudest achievements in swimming include qualifying for the Australian Age Championships for the past three years while training on my own. Over the last two years, I’ve managed to achieve both age and open national qualifying times.
I’ve also been Swimming North Coast Age Champion for the past few years, breaking several championship records along the way.
Most recently, I earned a silver medal at the Queensland Sprint Championships, which was an exciting milestone in my swimming career. What are your goals and aspirations for the future? Are there any major competitions or milestones you’re currently working towards?
My main focus right now is competing at the Australian Age and Australian Open Swimming Championships this April in Brisbane. I’m hoping to make the finals in 50 fly. My next big goal in the coming years is to qualify for the Australian Trials. Every race and training session is a step closer to that goal. Thanks Caleb.
People often ask me, ‘What are your top three policies?’
It’s a good question, one that becomes easier to answer the more I speak to people. Everywhere I go, people talk to me about the rising cost of living, the failures in our healthcare system, and their concerns about the future we are leaving for our kids.
My policy platform is based on feedback from the community. If elected, I will meet these challenges head-on by:
• Cracking down on price gouging and stopping anti-competitive behaviour by supermarket, energy, and airline duopolies.
• Redirecting public funds from wasteful corporate subsidies to the essential services our community needs like healthcare, housing, and local infrastructure.
• Supporting the next generation by building a housing system that is accessible to everyday people and taking real action on climate change.
Major party politics is failing us. The major parties who have caused these
problems are unwilling to fix them. They take millions from the same corporations hiking grocery prices, power bills, insurance, and mortgage rates. No wonder they won’t stand up to them.
I’m running as an independent because we deserve better. I believe in a government that works for you - not party factions or their corporate donors.
When I was a nurse and bought my first home in Bellingen, it cost about three times the average salary. Now, my daughter works as a teacher in the same area, and the average home costs ten times the average salary. That’s completely unsustainable. Young people, families, and essential workers are being priced out of the communities they grew up in. People are stuck in unstable
rentals, facing long commutes, or being forced to leave the region altogether.
There’s no single solution to the housing crisis, but what we’re doing now is clearly broken. We need:
At its core, we need to stop treating housing as just an investment market and start treating it as what it really is—a basic human right
• Fairer tax policies that support the construction of new homes, rather than fuelling speculation and developer profits.
• More social and affordable housing because the market alone won’t solve this crisis.
• Planning reforms to allow smaller homes and granny flats, making it easier for people to live in the communities they love.
At its core, we need to stop treating housing as just an investment market and start treating it as what it really is - a basic human right.
I’ve spent my career as a nurse and healthcare leader - caring for patients at the bedside,
leading nursing teams across the Mid North Coast, and coordinating disaster response efforts during fires and floods. That experience has taught me how to solve problems under pressure and get results for our community.
One of my key priorities is preventative healthcare. Our system should focus on keeping people well - not just treating them when they get sick. That means:
• More investment in primary care so people can see a doctor when they need one.
• Better mental health support - because a crisis-driven system leaves too many people without help.
• Reducing barriers to care - whether it’s cost, distance, or availability, we need a system that works for people.
None of this will happen while our political system is dominated by the major parties, who listen to their donors and factions and not the people they’re meant to represent. Big corporations have far too much influence over our politics. Fossil fuel companies prevent action on climate change. Banks and supermarkets make record profits while people struggle. Political donations
buy access to decision-makers. The result? A system that works for corporations, not everyday people.
To fix this, we need to take back our democracy by:
• Ending corporate influence - Cracking down on lobbying and ensuring political decisions are made in the public interest, not for corporate donors.
• Fixing our broken donations systemStopping the flow of corporate money that distorts policy and ensuring transparency in who funds our politicians.
• Protecting the right to protestDefending free speech and community advocacy so people can challenge power without fear.
• Stopping misinformation in electionsIntroducingtruth in politicaladvertising laws so elections aren’t won through lies and fear campaigns.
But real reform isn’t just about laws - it’s about changing the way politics is done. As an independent, I don’t answer to party insiders or donors. I answer to you. That means real community engagement that puts people at the centre of decision-making. A Better Future Is Possible
I’ve been overwhelmed by the thousands of conversations, ideas, and feedback from this community. It’s clear that people want real solutions - not more excuses.
If we haven’t spoken yet, I’d love to hear from you.

Hospitality has always been about more than just food and coffee for us - it’s about people, community, and creating something that lasts.
When Ben and I first crossed paths, neither of us knew we’d one day be business partners. I had rented one of his units, and over a few months, we got to know each other. Conversations turned from everyday life to business, and before long, we realised we shared a similar mindset - both ambitious and both keen to create something meaningful. Then, an opportunity presented itself - the pizza shop across the road was up for sale. It wasn’t part of a grand plan, but something about it felt right. With a mix of excitement and uncertainty, we took the leap. That decision marked the beginning of our company Bargain With The Future - not just as a business, but as a shared vision for what hospitality could be.
Like many entrepreneurs, we faced our share of challenges, tight budgets, long hours, and the uncertainty that comes with building something from scratch. But what we lacked in resources, we made up for in determination and a belief that we were building something special.
Fast forward to today, and Bargain With The Future has grown into three thriving hospitality businesses. Each venue has its own character and purpose, but they all share a commitment to quality, sustainability, and the community
that has supported us from the start.
Our latest venture, Jetty Pavilion, is a testament to that philosophy. It’s not just about serving great food and coffee - it’s about creating a destination where people can gather, celebrate, and connect with the waterfront in a way that enhances the local experience.
Looking back, it’s incredible to see how far we’ve come. For us though, this is just the beginning. The future is something you build every day, and we’re excited for what’s next.

Design has the power to ignite cultural, economic and social transformation in Aboriginal communities. I’ve been fortunate to work alongside some of the most inspiring and socially driven architectural minds in the country. After graduating from architecture and working with Healthabitat and Troppo Architects, I witnessed how poorly designed houses created by bureaucrats without community input or site visits, were failing Aboriginal communities.
Collaborating with communities in Arnhem Land, the APY Lands and the Torres Strait Islands deepened my belief in design’s ability to solve real-world challenges. Now, as the Manager of the National Aboriginal Design Agency (NADA) I’m dedicated to leading the NADA team to support communities shape their own environments and solutions.

It’s not just about products; design is a considered process that addresses cultural, economic and social needs, providing platforms for identity, cultural preservation and sustainable opportunities. NADA also specialises in the integration of large-scale artworks into the physical architecture of major infrastructure projects.
Our projects are featured in regional hospitals such as Coffs Harbour as well as new developments at Sydney Children’s Hospital and the John Hunter Health and Innovation Precinct.
These high-profile projects provide Aboriginal artists with valuable opportunities to enhance their portfolios, gain significant professional experience and work on Country while connected to their communities.
Through design, cultural values like kinship, family and connection to Country can be woven
into the built environment, preserving traditions for future generations. NADA continue to demonstrate that when communities are given a voice in the design process, the outcomes are transformative and deeply meaningful.

Dean Dobson is the NSW Supermarket Supervisor of Ritchies IGA Stores and Liquor and is overseeing the new and dynamic renovations of the Ritchies IGA Boambee East store. There have been many changes and upgrades so we wanted to chat more about this….
The store has recently undergone an extensive renovation. Can you tell us what changes or improvements have made the biggest difference for your customers?
We have invested over $4m into the store, upgrading and replacing most of the refrigeration throughout the supermarket and liquor store. Our customers will be able to see a fantastic improved offer in the fresh area with new departments and concepts. We have also increased the liquor store, doubling its retail offer. It has a much bigger range, layout and coolroom space.
Ritchies IGA and Liquor is clearly focused on providing great value and service, how do you ensure customers feel this in their shopping experience every day?
We pride ourselves on being the friendliest team in the supermarket industry. Staff strive to greet and smile and talk to all customers to make them feel welcome and ensure that they leave having had a great experience. The new sushi department sounds like a hit! How has the response been from customers, and what kinds of sushi are most popular?
Customers love the new sushi department.
They produce a quality product made fresh in store every day. It is ideal for grabbing early in the day for school break / lunch; tradies are buying sushi to put in their lunch eskies, and it is a great meal or snack anytime of the day. Katsu Chicken Crunchie and Uramakai Tuna are two of the most popular and must be tried. We also have hot to go sushi which is also popular and a range of Japanese drinks.
Can you tell us more about the locally sourced products you offer and how you collaborate with local suppliers?
We are community focused so supporting local businesses is a must.
It is great to give some small businesses the opportunity to take the next step, expand and get their own special product in everyone’s face.
What makes your deli stand out in the market, especially with your indulgent cheeses, cured meats, and antipasto?
We were able to encourage so many local businesses to expand and stock their products in our supermarket. There is a specific ‘local’ section as you walk into the supermarket.
We were able to encourage so many local businesses to expand and stock their products in our supermarket. There is a specific ‘local’ section as you walk into the supermarket.
Our team made the effort to visit local markets on weekends, i.e. Jetty markets, local shops, and our competitors to specifically look for locally made and grown products.
The new deli looks sensational and we have a great hot food section to cater for meals which must be checked out! There is a hot food offer to suit breakfast, lunch and dinner. We have a section for specific cut and wrap cheese catering for everyone’s taste, from local producers to some fancy cheeses from France. The deli range is extensive and it also includes a specific seafood section.
Our platter boxes are a great way to entertain for groups and you can either purchase a prepacked platter where the items are still in their packaging or we can make up a platter from our vast offer. There are also platter boxes available from the sushi, produce and bakery departments.
What other fresh offers do you have in store?
We still have our value added Ritchies chicken department where we make up fantastic meal options from fresh chicken on site to tantalising stir fries; artisan Kievs; fresh chicken schnitzels; and flavoured chicken sausages made in store, the list goes on. Don’t forget your pets too with a great instore made pet mince.
Our in-store butchers now have a dry aged beef fridge where you can purchase a cut in the fridge and we will hold it till it is dry aged to perfection. We’ll slice it to your preference and you can take it home, cook it up and you’ll be known to have the tenderest steaks at your BBQ. Can you tell us more about the weekly specials, how do you curate them to ensure customers get the best value?
above weekly Ritchies handbill lines offering thousands of promotional prices in the store every week.
How does the store engage with the local community through its supermarket and liquor sections?
Ritchies has a seniors' day each week, where seniors can get a 5% discount.
Since the program began many years ago Ritchies has donated just over a staggering $54 million to local communities.
Ritchies loyalty card/app allows customers to pick a local organisation and every month a % of the customers shop gets donated to that local organisation (conditions apply). We encourage all local sports clubs and organisations to register as many organisations across the east coast of Australia benefit from this every month. Since the program began many years ago Ritchies has donated just over a staggering $54 million to local communities.
We work very hard at delivering a competitive offer. We encourage all customers, new and old to check our shelf prices that are in line with our competitors. We also run the weekly IGA promotional program and the over and
What is the most popular item customers go for each day?
Having a 'scratch bakery' has its benefits. You can taste the difference. We think we have the best loaves of bread and buns in town. There is a lot that is popular from sourdough
to slices but I would have to say that the cheese Vegemite scrolls, and the single pizzas are definitely a crowd favourite. In-store made mousse, trifle, sweets and treats and too many other to list here.
What is the most rewarding part about supporting local suppliers and bringing their products to your customers?
Being able to give local small businesses that little bit of a ‘leg up’, so to speak, to increase exposure of their product. Some of these places didn’t think expansion into supermarkets would be possible prior to this, so to see endeavours like this succeed is very rewarding.
What role does Ritchies IGA and Liquor play in the local Boambee community, and how do you actively support it beyond offering products?
Ritchies has donated approximately $140,000 to local schools and sporting clubs in the area through our Loyalty program since the company came to the area in 2006. In addition to this, we are also proud sponsors of the Boambee Soccer Club. In recent years, we have also held a number of free Family Fun Days down at the store where there are stalls, activities for the kids, face painting and showbags.
Thanks Dean.
Gai Southwell is the creative force behind Manhuti WalkAbout Jewellery & Weaving, a practice that honours the rich traditions of First Nations weaving while embracing contemporary design. Drawing on generations of cultural knowledge, Gai crafts intricate woven pieces and jewellery that reflect deep connections to Country and storytelling. She is currently a featured artist at The Gallery - Saltwater Freshwater Arts Alliance here in Coffs Harbour.
Hello Gai. Can you share with us a bit about your early introduction to art and what inspired your art into becoming such a big part of your life?
I think I can attribute my interest in crafts to my Aunt, who introduced me to a variety of creative practices, particularly leather carving and tapestry. From a young age, I was always making something - starting with sewing and knitting clothes for my dolls, then progressing to making clothing for myself. That love for creating led me to explore a wide range of crafts, from leatherwork and weaving to mosaics, stained glass, photography, and jewellery design.
I truly believe creativity is something you’re born with, and for me, it’s almost like an addiction to creating. It’s a part of who I am and has always been something I’ve needed to do. Right now, my main passion is weaving and photography. I gather inspiration for both from my travels around the countryside, where the landscapes and textures fuel my creativity. Creativity runs through my veins, and I’m so grateful I’ve been able to pass that passion onto my children and grandchildren. They all love to experiment with different mediums, building and designing a variety of things, they can turn their hand to almost anything. The only thing I can’t master is drawing. I’m hopeless!

connections between people, place, and culture, using both natural fibres sourced from Country and imported materials. The works reflect themes of resilience, identity, and storytelling, echoing the traditions of weaving as one of the oldest continuing art forms practiced throughout the world. I am inspired by the colours and textures of the places I visit.
Your fibre artworks are so unique, what draws you to this medium, and how did you first start weaving?
Can you tell us about your exhibition at The Gallery - Saltwater Freshwater Arts Alliance in Coffs Harbour? What themes or stories are you sharing through your work? My exhibition showcases a blend of contemporary style with an ancient craft, celebrating the enduring art of weaving. Through my pieces, I explore the deep
Weaving connects me to cultures and people around the country that have practiced this art for thousands of years. I was first drawn to weaving as a way to express my identity and creativity. It started with curiosity, and experimenting with materials I felt drawn to. Over time, my practice evolved into a fusion of traditional and contemporary styles, blending natural and imported fibres to create something unique and meaningful.

What shapes your art? Building cultural connections is at the heart of my weaving. It has given me a strong sense of belonging and responsibility to keep cultural traditions alive. Sourcing materials is an integral part of my practice. I gather native grasses, vines, and other plant fibres from Country, always with deep respect and care for the land. The preparation process involves cleaning, soaking, drying, and sometimes dyeing the fibres using natural pigments. The name of your business, Manhuti WalkAbout Jewellery & Weaving, carries a
cultural meaning. What does ‘Manhuti’ represent to you in your creative journey?
Weaving is a deeply meditative and healing practice. The rhythmic movement of creating something with your hands allows for reflection and emotional release.
‘Manhuti' is a word from Dunghutti Country where I was born and live. It means to 'travel alone' as in 'walkabout' . My work takes me across different communities, sharing weaving and cultural knowledge with people of all ages. It also symbolises the movement of weaving itself - the interlacing of fibres, stories, and traditions that have travelled across generations and continents.
How do you see your work helping to preserve and share Indigenous traditions and stories with broader audiences?
Through my art and workshops, I am keeping Indigenous traditions alive and accessible. Weaving is a powerful storytelling medium,
and by sharing my knowledge, I help others appreciate the significance of this ancient craft. Whether through exhibitions, teaching, or wearable art, my work brings Indigenous cultures into contemporary spaces while honouring its deep roots from around the world.
You teach weaving workshops. How does sharing your skills with others enrich your own creative practice?
Teaching is a reciprocal experience. When I share weaving with others, I also learn from the questions people ask, the ways they interpret the practice, and the new ideas they bring. It strengthens my connection to the craft and continually inspires me to explore new techniques and materials. Watching others discover the joy of weaving reinforces its importance as both an art form and a cultural practice.
You’re also a qualified counsellor and
incorporate weaving into your therapy treatments. How do you think art and culture play a role in healing?
Weaving is a deeply meditative and healing practice. The rhythmic movement of creating something with your hands allows for reflection and emotional release. As a counsellor, I used weaving as a therapeutic tool, providing a safe space for people to express themselves and connect with others. Mirella Gleeson and Jamie Barber came together through a love of creative expression, immersive events and high energy music, and created Disco Pig Events. They provide a multitude of unique services to make any event a total standout, including mobile bar service, DJ hire and event promotion among other things!
Hi Mirella and Jamie. Can you tell us how Disco Pig Events came to life? What inspired you to start this venture?
Jamie: I have worked in portrait and event photography, specialised makeup artistry, vegan specialty cakes, catering, bar managing, visual art and design - pretty much anything that lets me experiment and create. When I met Mirella, I was seeking an investor and co-collaborator. We just clicked, sharing a vision of blending gourmet experiences, immersive events, and high-energy music into something unique.
Mirella: I enjoy being an entrepreneur and bringing things to life. Meeting Jamie we were very much in sync. Her out of the box and infinite creativity attracted me immediately. We are both free spirits with great imaginations and don’t do things by half measures. It’s a very Disco Pig attribute!
What services does Disco Pig offer?
We offer a range of unique and high-energy event services, including:
Mobile Mocktail & Mylk Bar – Bringing handcrafted, alcohol-free drinks to any event.
Fully Serviced Mobile Event Bar – A one-ofa-kind bar experience, complete with expert service and signature cocktails.
Gourmet Grazing Boxes – Carefully curated food platters for events and private bookings.
Disco Pig Van as a DJ Booth – A psychedelic, eye-catching DJ setup.
DJ Hire – Top-tier DJs to bring the perfect soundtrack to your event.
Professional Event Photography – Capturing the best moments with high-quality, artistic event photography.
Event Promotion – Helping bring events to life with marketing, social media, and promo expertise.
Your events bring together different artists, DJs, and creatives. How important is collaboration in what you do, and what do
you look for in the people you work with?
Collaboration is everything. It’s not just about talent, it’s about passion, originality and community spirit. We like people who bring energy, respect the vibe and push creative boundaries. When the right people come together, that’s when the magic happens. Having a positive and generally supportive attitude is crucial.
Your events focus on high-energy vibes and connection, what do you think makes a truly unforgettable party?
It’s all about energy from the get go - the kind that grabs you, pulls you in and makes you lose track of time. It’s the music, the lighting, the atmosphere, but most of all, it’s the people. When everyone’s in sync, the DJs and performers are feeding off the crowd and there is an unspoken connection in the air. It’s about creating a safe and inclusive space where people are free to be themselves. Our ethos at heart encourages self expression in a fun and playful manner no matter the task at hand. It’s what we love to do.
The teapot-smoked cocktails you do sound incredible! How did that concept come about, and what makes them special?
Jamie conjured up the idea in the most Disco Pig way possible, experimenting, getting creative and having a bit of a mad scientist moment. She was using her cheese smoker to infuse herbs into a glass teapot when it struck her - why not smoke a drink like this? She started playing with different botanicals, testing how they interacted with mocktails and cocktails then suddenly, the teapot-smoked drinks were born. A perfect mix of aesthetics, theatrics, aroma and flavour. Something unique, immersive, and totally unforgettable.
Your events bring together music, dance, and a psychedelic mobile bar, how would you describe the ultimate Disco Pig experience?
It’s a multi-sensory adventure. Music that pulsates through you and moves you, lights that hypnotise and the electric buzz of a crowd that feels like family. It’s sipping on a teapot-smoked cocktail, grazing on a Disco Pig Gourmet Pignic Box packed with delectable treats whilst losing
The kind of experience that lingers in your memory long after the party ends. As Willy Wonka said ‘we are the music makers, and we are the dreamers of dreams’.
yourself in the rhythm of the night. It’s immersive, unforgettable, and a little bit wild. The kind of experience that lingers in your memory long after the party ends. As Willy Wonka said ‘we are the music makers, and we are the dreamers of dreams’.
Mirella, as a strong female DJ and entertainment act, what are you most proud of about your success in this industry and what led you to DJ? Have you noticed any shifts in the industry towards more inclusivity and diversity?
It’s not as inclusive and as diverse as it could be but there are shifts. For example, there are more talented female and other minority DJs and music producers coming to the forefront. We must continue to support them.
I’m proud of the work invested into my love of sharing music, getting to grips with mixing a multitude of genres. These include House, Disco, Techno, Psytrance, World, Latin, Electronica, Club, Afro House, DnB and others. Music is how I express myself and look after people. Music is powerful the world over. It takes us on a journey, makes you laugh, cry,
sing and dance and we tell stories through it. My father played a variety of music from the day I was born so music informs many of my earliest memories. It’s really no surprise I ended up DJing and why it makes me so happy.
What’s next for Disco Pig Events? Any exciting upcoming gigs or projects?
Next up is Electro Freq Show, a multi-genre bass fest with a hint of jazz burlesque, because why not shake things up? Its launching at Murwillumbah’s M|Arts Precinct on May 10, coming to Bellingen later in the year. Expect an immersive fusion of deep bass, and a touch of sultry, smoky jazz burlesque vibes—all wrapped up in that signature Disco Pig madness. This one’s going to be next level!
Catch Mirella on the 26th April at the Bellingen Brewery. She is playing alongside Coco Varma in an exciting collaboration featuring Indian Electronica. Mirella is part Indian and looks forward to playing music that connects her to her cultural heritage and is an incredible fusion of sound.
There are many other events so keep up to date with us via our socials and you can also email us at discopigevents@gmail.com
Thanks Mirella & Jamie.
Kayley Mitchell is the heart and soul behind Live and Breathe Photography. She specialises in capturing the magic of destination weddings, intimate elopements, and adventurous couples in breathtaking locations. With a passion for preserving memories, Kayley creates timeless images that tell a story and celebrate love in some of the world’s most beautiful se ings.
What services do you offer? I specialise in luxury destination weddings, elopements and intimate weddings (often with less then 30 guests) and engagement or couple photo shoots. My heart is happiest and my soul most creative when we go to EPIC destinations with stunning views and landscapes surrounding us. I also now offer planning and photography packages taking the hassle and stress out of your wedding plans. Finding fabulous wedding vendors in places you have never been can be tricky. That’s where I can step right in and bring your vision to life with the most magical team of wedding vendors.
How do you approach destination weddings or intimate elopements? These special days are ultimately all about you, creating your dream day, and I will always support you bringing that vision to life. I have the highest level of organisation, research and planning to ensure your destination wedding or intimate elopement runs smoothly. We always meet up and become super comfortable with each other, after all – we will be spending one of the most important days of your life together.
What is your photography style? I have a relaxed approach to my photography style.
Allowing the moments to come naturally to you, whilst providing guidance and some soft suggestions to improve the shots. My style really thrives in beautiful outdoors locations from epic ocean views, to peaceful waterfalls or the ultimate destinations. I really enjoy taking inspiration from nature surrounding us and will blend it seamlessly into any elopement, intimate wedding or couples session.
What do you love most about capturing moments in beautiful or unique locations?
The atmosphere that is created is truly one full of love and magic when you choose the ultimate dream location. It’s adventurous, exciting and so memorable for every bride, groom or couple. Providing this service and these quality images is so rewarding, the results captured are truly stunning. I also love travel and finding new places and this is often done when capturing beautiful destinations for adventurous couples. How do you ensure that each couple’s or family’s personality shines through in their photos? We have fun. We get to know each
other prior, we have coffee and build trust. I will choose prompts and guidance that suit your personality. I have loads of experience with putting you at ease in front of the camera. It’s actually loads of fun, laughter and trust when you choose the right photographer.
We always meet up and become super comfortable with each other, a er all –we will be spending one of the most important days of your life together.
How do you adapt your approach when working in different locations or unfamiliar environments? Working in dream destinations, this happens all the time. I make myself familiar with them prior. I always arrive early (days earlier if a wedding) and thoroughly explore the location, that’s the great part of my job, I love it. I will check it out and closely observe the lighting, the backgrounds, different times of day, how busy is the location, what is the surface like to walk on, what is the weather like etc. I will also bring all my equipment I might possibly need (and more) to handle any situation. Then on the day, I am ready. We have the best, most love filled, fun adventure of your life.
How do you handle travel logistics for destination weddings or elopements? With ease, excitement, awe and thorough planning!
I carefully consider any accommodation needs, transport, legal documents (if required), timing and weather. I have my family at home who are my biggest support for me to travel anywhere with you.
Every elopement, wedding and couple receive sneak previews within 2448 hours and a full completed gallery can be expected within 4 weeks.
Are there any additional costs or considerations I should be aware of? I have standard packages that include photography and wedding planning. I often recommend we customise a package to suit your dream destination or location, after all, you deserve your day planned and captured for you. There may be extra costs but I will always be up front about them. It is only fair if I provide you with the best options to suit your day, then you choose what is best for you, your values and budget.
What areas do you cover? I travel loadsanywhere within Australia, New Zealand and beyond. I am based on the Mid North Coast of NSW. I primarily cover from Coffs Harbour down to Taree as my ‘local’ areas with many destinations available Australia wide.
How do you work with couples/families who may be nervous in front of the camera? We keep it light hearted, fun and natural. I will provide guidance on poses whilst combining it
with activities you wouldn’t even think of and it turns into us creating absolute magic together.
How do you balance candid moments with posed photos during these special sessions? I am ready at every moment, with my camera always on. Once you have done this many times you often know what is about to happen before the couples do. I provide candid prompts for couples and then allow the moments to happen naturally. The most posed moments of the day are usually family photos. Otherwise most of the day is a smooth blend of candid guidance for magical results.
Do you offer any pre-wedding consultations to discuss locations, poses, or details? Absolutely. Every couple getting married will receive at least 1-2 in person meet ups. It’s my shout for your favourite beverage. We will meet up as many times as possible, chat over the phone, zoom, email and text as wedding plans evolve. There is unlimited communication between us. We become very comfortable with each other and it’s like we have known each other forever. If the distance between us is huge, then I will travel to visit if possible (because I love to travel!) or video calls become a super handy tool.
How long after the shoot can we expect to see our photos? Do you offer sneak peeks or previews? Every elopement, wedding and
couple receive sneak previews within 24-48 hours and a full completed gallery can be expected within 4 weeks.
Do you offer any additional services such as albums, prints, or frames? I believe in creating memories and this includes being able to bring them to life. This is done through beautiful and creative custom designed albums, prints, timber frames and even canvas.
What do you do if the weather or other unexpected circumstances affect the shoot? I will always stay calm, keep it light hearted and be in control if the weather is unfavourable or unexpected circumstances arise. I will always recommend in advance to have a solid plan B (especially for weddings) and help communicate to others if changes are required. If it’s a bit of rain and manageable – don’t stress - sometimes these end up being the most magical parts of a wedding day or a couple’s family photoshoot.
What is new and exciting in your photography business? I have recently brought wedding planning into my business. I have found a need for it in the local area and beyond. Planning a wedding is a lot of work and can be stressful. I like to plan things out perfectly and I wish to share my wedding knowledge with those planning their intimate destination wedding or elopement.

Ma McEwan and his Dad Steve have been running Reptile World here in Co s Harbour together for a number of years now, as well as providing reptile demonstrations and education within the community. Reptile education is something they are passionate about and plan to continue to provide to the Co s Coast for years to come.
Hey Matthew, can you share a brief history of Reptile World and its significance to the Coffs Harbour community?
Reptile World has been operating for over 20 years. My family moved up to Coffs Harbour in 1996 from Sydney with the main goal of my Dad Steve, pursuing his passion of working with reptiles as a full-time job. He started off by doing snake shows in 2000 for Reptile Awareness Displays in Tamworth, NSW and then branched off to start his own business, ‘Steve McEwan’s Reptile World’. His first show under his own business name was back in 2004. We then made the big move to ‘The Big Banana’ complex in 2019. We have an awesome permanent facility at the Big Banana but keep the mobile displays going so we can educate as many people as possible.
Your father Steve and yourself started the Reptile park many years ago, tell us about the history with reptiles in your family? Reptiles have always been part of our family, even when my sister and I were growing up. Unlike many other kids having a dog or cat as a family pet, ours were always snakes, lizards, turtles, goannas and crocodiles. We would tag along with Dad when he removed snakes for the public from sheds and houses so we had exposure to some really cool critters from a young age. That definitely started my passion and I’ve gone on to follow in his footsteps while my sister works as a veterinarian in QLD. How important is reptile awareness in the community? To Steve and I, reptile education is of the utmost importance. Considering we live on the Coffs Coast where reptiles are very abundant, we consider reptile education to be as important as learning how to cross a road properly. Coffs Harbour and the surrounding
suburbs are home to around 16 different species of snake, with some of these being highly venomous. With Coffs boasting an array of great bush and nature walks which we all love to venture on from time to time, the likelihood of coming into contact with one of these species of snake is quite high. Having the knowledge and education on how to interact with snakes in the wild could potentially save your life and this is the reason why Steve and I take it as our responsibility to help pass on this education.
Where can we find out more about Reptile World? To find out more information about Reptile World, you can head to our social media pages and search ‘Reptile World Coffs Harbour’ or head to our website at www.reptileworld.net.au. We are also happy to chat all things reptiles if you make your way up to our facility.

THE HEART OF
White fine sand, aqua blue water, so clear you feel like you are immersed on a tropical island, instantly at ease. That’s the Byron I long for and seek each time I visit. This trip didn’t disappoint, as Byron Bay never does. It’s been several years since I’ve visited Byron Bay's shores, and I purposely change up where I stay each time I visit. The key criteria, always being based within close walking distance to the beach.
Discovering Community Driven Accommodation
Byron Palms Guesthouse and Spa (adult only) was the right selection for two solo female travellers on a four-day vacation, located a short walk from the heart of Byron Bay. A magna therapy pool is the anchor of this 1920’s art deco abode and with 7 rooms surrounding it you instantly feel at home. There is also a sauna/steam room and day
beds where you often find yourself relaxing curling up with a book.
A continental breakfast is served each day at the breakfast bar as part of your accommodation package, and we were often dining with the large local lizards whilst striking up conversations with our fellow guests. We soon enough recognised it was not uncommon for guests to be conversing in the pool with travellers from around the world whilst soaking up the afternoon rays after a day of exploring.
We soon enough recognised it was not uncommon for guests to be conversing in the pool with travellers from around the world
Our morning aspiration and yearning for a decadent brunch on our first day was delayed a few hours, as we had flown in during an
electrical storm, resulting in power outages at most locations we had identified to dine in. Shortly after discovering most cafes had to shut up shop, we settled for a bakery treat before hitting the shops on and surrounding Fletcher Street. No visit to Byron is complete without perusing the local fashion stores for some retail therapy. Whether it’s bamboo clothing, boutiques showcasing local designers or high-end fashion that you are seeking Byron has it all. Next to our accommodation is the Spell Boutique, which offers Boho-style items designed in Byron Bay. Tucked away behind Spell is the Bay Grocer, where you can purchase local produce from the Northern Rivers including Byron Bay Cheese Co and Nimbin Valley Dairy. There is also a café out
front to relax and soak up the atmosphere. After a visit to Spell, what better way to immerse ourselves into Byron life than a mystic visit to a local astrologer and clairvoyant psychic medium, Patsy Bennett. Located a short bike ride away from Spell, Patsy welcomes me into her space for a reading and I instantly feel at ease. Patsy has a strong client base and publishes her horoscopes in Australia and internationally, and as we part ways, I have a strong sense that our paths will cross again.
Savouring a Brunch to Cherish
Before going to the shops, we put our name down at Bayleaf Café on Marvel Street, a funky local dining hotspot heaving with good energy and sun kissed locals. The breakfast here was well worth the wait, the Turkish eggs with labneh melted in your mouth and was displayed impeccably. I was tempted to try the adaptogenic coffee substitute, which I soon discovered was prolific in Byron, however settled for a matcha latte.
After enquiring with a local barista, it soon became clear that blackouts can occur frequently in Byron, the locals have adapted
and so would we. They are generally short lived, and we were reassured our fine dining evening meal would thankfully not be in jeopardy.
is night li ed our spirits as we encountered a fourpiece band complete with banjo and electric violin, they had us singing and dancing along to ‘When I Die’ by e Waifs.
The beauty of Byron is you can spend as little or as much as you like. There are plenty of low-cost food takeaway options, including my favourite, the Bay Kebabs, a local institution located just across the road from the beachfront Beach Hotel which has appealed to local backpackers for decades.
A newcomer in Byron’s foodie scene is the Smoking Camel. Having frequently visited its sister restaurant Light Years Asian Diner we were eager to immerse ourselves in its intricate tapestry of its middle eastern interior and savour a middle eastern feast. To our delight the waiter greeted us warmly and was genuinely eager to find out how our day was. This simple gesture really amplified our dining experience and the fragrant lamb
curry, spiced cauliflower and saganaki with burnt honey and oregano were devoured in earnest.
After dining out, it is easy to be swept away in the nostalgia of the Byron that was, and to some degree still is. We are drawn into the crowds encircling a group of three young male buskers, belting out cover songs and whipping up the crowd to sing along. Having witnessed these buskers and their repertoire we were drawn into the sounds of live music from the nearby Railway Bar.
The Railway Bar, or Rails, the friendly bar as it's known, has been belting out live music every night for the past 30 years. This night lifted our spirits as we encountered a fourpiece band complete with banjo and electric violin, they had us singing and dancing along to ‘When I Die’ by The Waifs. The experience was so uplifting everywhere we turned there was broad smiles across the audience.

Bridging eras: Exploring the Old and New I did ponder what a juxtaposition it was to travel on an industrial train to a newly revamped industrial precinct when my friend suggested we try out Byron’s Solar train. Nevertheless, who couldn’t resist the opportunity to travel on the world’s first solar train with the original train built after the Second World War in 1949! Interestingly, it uses 6.5 kilowatts of solar power panels on its roof that charge a big lithium battery. The trip takes you between Byron Beach platform (just around the corner from Main Beach) and North Beach (the station is in the middle of Bayshore Drive) and is a threekilometre, ten-minute journey.
Before we had even hit the water our group was amused as our tour guides demonstrated how to navigate our kayaks and remain safe if we capsized in a cheeky yet e cient fashion.
We arrived at the Byron Beach platform which appeared so familiar. I recalled catching a train into the heart of Byron Bay decades ago, and my amusement at a pub being positioned right next to the train tracks and jam-packed with a hybrid mix of locals and travellers. We located the train station for the solar train close to the beachfront of Byron and checked the timetable. We were a bit early so decided to grab some local treats, the Byron Bay Cookie Company shop was conveniently located just around the corner. We engaged in a lovely chat with the shop assistant who encouraged us to try a cookie sample. This
was a clever tactic as we couldn’t resist purchasing a variety of cookies including the infamous dotty cafe cookie. We arrived back at the station in town just before the train pulled in and what a sight it was! You feel like you have stepped back in time as you’re greeted by the station attendant selling tickets from a worn leather bag, before she validates your paper ticket. By this time the sun is belting down, and we are thankful all the windows are open.
The industrial estate is a must visit, with a range of local retailers, cafes, swimwear, homewares. We are given an excellent tip from the shop attendant at the Byron Bay Cookie Company to try out a sandwich shop around the corner from the industrial estate
called, Happy Days Cafe on Banksia Drive. It is well worth the visit for the home-made chicken sandwiches and it’s no wonder as they make their own bread - I will be back there.
Byron Bay is a haven for a residential group of bottlenose dolphins, estimated to have 100 dolphins in the population. As we embarked on our early morning Kayak dolphin tour with Cape Byron Kayaks, we couldn’t help but count our blessings that the sun was shining, and the weather forecast was optimal for our morning adventure. Before we had even hit the water our group was amused as our tour guides demonstrated how to navigate our kayaks and remain safe if we capsized in a cheeky yet efficient fashion. As soon as we launched our two-person kayak into the water, one of the guides called out, "Turtle
ahead!" and we quickly paddled forward, eager to catch a glimpse of the majestic creature.
We were among the first to surf to the shore, and as we looked at the group, we spo ed a large pod of dolphins swimming behind them.
We are getting into a rhythm and are gliding through the water, our eyes peeled for the first sighting of a dolphin. However, the dolphins are not the overall goal, simply being in the kayak out at the point, in front of Wategos really is a sight to behold. It takes your breath away and we pause for a moment to inhale the salty air, lie back on our kayak, and give our arms a break from paddling. Before long we are caught off guard by a colony of huge brown jellyfish surrounding us. As local seabirds dive into the water on the horizon, our guide jokes with some of the tourists that they are Byron Bay's equivalent of the drop bear, and you better watch out for them.
Whilst navigating the serene blue waters it is imperative that we do not get too distracted from our ultimate goal, to see the local dolphins at one with the sea. We are an hour into our trip, and we are yet to see dolphins, so we are instructed to huddle as a group so as to not alarm but attract the dolphins. There is some banter between the group members that if we don’t see a dolphin, they want their money back.
As the tour guide educates us on the local area, and we are immersed in this experience we soon see emerging in front of us three fins of local dolphins. It is a sight to behold and
boosts us on to continue paddling back to shore eager to get another glimpse. We power back to shore ready to attempt catching a wave into shore, with success we stand on the beach grinning after this truly magical experience. We were among the first to surf to the shore, and as we looked at the group, we spotted a large pod of dolphins swimming behind them. When the tour guide returned to shore, he threw his hands up in the air and asked, "Did you see the pod behind us while we were surfing in?" We couldn’t help but laugh at the irony, then slowly wandered back along the beach, taking in the stunning scenery.
Happy Hour and a final night at the Treehouse
After our morning adventure we are later keen to find a happy hour location for a sunset drink before heading to dinner at the Treehouse Byron Bay. Tempted by the happy hour $2.50 fresh oysters served from 4-6pm every day we arrive at this seaside chic bar, and it is truly alive with chatter and margaritas being swiftly delivered to diners. The vibe of this bar is electric, I’d therefore advise getting in early to secure a seat at the bar where you can watch them shake up the cocktails and get VIP service.
Following our visit to the Loft, I was eager to take my friend to a favourite
restaurant which has been in Byron Bay for some time – the Tree House. Located a 10-minute Uber drive away near Belongil Beach, its signature wood-fired pizzas and live music set under the palm trees is a blissful combination. We relax into the night in our booth and discuss the highlights of our trip. Every visit to Byron Bay is different but as two female travellers, we found Byron Bay to be the perfect blend of tantalising dining experiences, adventurous outdoor activities, and peaceful moments of relaxation.

It was all systems go at the Coffs Harbour Education Campus last month, as 128 new students began their academic journey at Southern Cross University.
Starting university is a big deal. It’s exciting, nerve-wracking, and full of new experiences. Orientation Day answered all the big questions: Can you live on campus? How do you join the Marlins Rugby Union Club? What activities can you get involved in with UniLife and the Coffs Harbour Student Association, and most importantly, where can you find support when you need it?
One of the key support programs for students is the First Year Adviser program. Manager of First Year Success, Dr Pete Muir, said the First Year Adviser program is a holistic way to offer support and solutions to any challenges a student may be facing.
“Our First Year Advisers know all of the support systems available here at Southern Cross. They are your one-stop-shop. If you
have a question and they can’t answer it, they’ll connect you with someone who can,” Dr Muir said.
First Year Advisers offer a point of connection with other university support services including learning advisers, peer support, counselling and equity and inclusion.
With
a rewarding career in physiotherapy awaiting them upon graduation, these students are ready to give their all to learn and grow as future health professionals who will be benefiting our community.
Dr Muir said when challenges arise, students should book a meeting with their First Year Adviser to set up structures of support.
“We had a first-year student who had failed some units and was really struggling. But through working with her First Year Adviser and getting connected to support systems, she began to really thrive in her course,” he said.
“There are so many students who just need someone to encourage them. We want students to know that we are here to support their success.
“Have some fun, get connected and reach out early if you need help. These are the key points for anyone transitioning to higher education.”
The start of term 1 also marked the arrival of the first-ever cohort of Physiotherapy students at the University.
Physiotherapy Course Coordinator, Professor Maria Constantinou, said there was a real buzz in the classroom.
“We are very excited to welcome our first cohort of physiotherapy students at our Coffs
Harbour campus,” she said.
“With a rewarding career in physiotherapy awaiting them upon graduation, these students are ready to give their all to learn and grow as future health professionals who will be benefiting our community.”
Maria further highlighted the exciting career prospects in the field. “The good thing about it as a profession is that it is always evolving,” she said.
“The places where you can work range from hospitals, private practice, and sporting organisations, right through to aged care and community healthcare settings. We’re always trying to move people towards better health, wherever they may be.”
On the board
The month also saw Coffs Harbour get its own Monopoly board, with Southern Cross University and the Solitary Islands Aquarium landing on prime real estate. The team hung out with Mr Monopoly himself at the launch
Mr Monopoly with the Southern Cross University Orientation team
at the Coffs Harbour Jetty, at the centre of all the fun and action. Southern Cross University Marketing Manager, Bill Key, said it was a great opportunity to connect further with the Coffs Harbour community.
“Monopoly has been a family favourite for many generations, so we jumped at the chance to have Southern Cross University and the Solitary Islands Aquarium represented on the Coffs Monopoly board and Top Trumps card game,” Mr Key said.
“Not only is it great to see both our locations properties’, to
“Not only is it great to see both our locations as the ‘green properties’, but it’s so cool to be part of the beautiful Coffs Harbour community immortalised on the iconic board.”
As we celebrate 30 years of service, we reflect on how we have fostered a sense of belonging and positively impacted the broader community. Our commitment to nurturing the emotional, social, and academic growth of children extends beyond the classroom, emphasising the importance of community involvement and the ripple effect of kindness.
Building Community Connections
We believe that a sense of belonging starts in the community, and this month, we’ve been actively involved in outreach programs that build those vital connections. For instance, after Cyclone Alfred, we answered a call for help from Pete’s Place, a nearby shelter, by organising a donation drive. We gathered essential items such as towels, non-perishable food, long-life milk, mozzie coils, and toiletries. This effort not only supported families in need but also instilled in our children the importance of compassion and helping others during difficult times.
A Sweet Gesture: Neighbourhood Day Excursion
A highlight this month was our Neighbourhood Day, where the children baked treats like cookies, muffins, and brownies, learning valuable skills such as measuring and decorating. The true essence of the day was when the children,
accompanied by educators, delivered these treats to local businesses, neighbours, and community members. This initiative aimed to spread kindness, foster connections, and help the children feel part of something bigger, teaching them how small acts of generosity can make a big difference and reinforce community responsibility.
Keep Kids Cozy This Winter: Join Our April PJ Drive with Friends of Dignity
Together, we can make a meaningful difference in the lives of children who need it most, offering them warmth, comfort, and a sense of dignity. We thank you for your generosity and for helping us spread kindness throughout our community.
e small acts of kindness, such as baking treats or donating pyjamas, bring warmth and connection to those who feel disconnected.
With winter fast approaching, we’re excited to launch our April PJ Drive in collaboration with Friends of Dignity and 3 Bears. Our goal is to collect new pyjamas (sizes 0-16) for children living in domestic violence refuges, ensuring they stay warm and comfortable during the colder months. We’re calling on our service families and the Coffs Harbour community to donate new pyjamas. Donations can be dropped off at our service location between 7:30 AM and 4:00 PM daily. Additionally, our staff members are supporting this initiative by participating in weekly “mufti” (casual dress) days, with proceeds benefiting Friends of Dignity.
Through these outreach programs, our children have gained a deeper understanding of the struggles others face and the power of compassion. By participating in these initiatives, they are learning valuable life skills, empathy, and a lifelong commitment to helping those in need. The small acts of kindness, such as baking treats or donating pyjamas, bring warmth and connection to those who feel disconnected.
We are proud of the continued support and involvement from our children and families, as together, we create a community where everyone feels valued, included, and cared for. We’re calling on our service families and the Coffs Harbour community to donate new pyjamas. Donations can be dropped off at our service location between 7:30am and 4:00pm daily. focus contributor.
We caught up with women’s health GPs
Kristen Pigram and René Lazzaro and sonographer Ash from Saige Health & Wellness to find out more about this emerging medical practice.
Firstly, tell us about the Saige Health model of care and what draws you to working at Saige.
R: Healthcare can often feel fragmented for patients, as clinicians frequently work in isolated silos.
Integrating multiple specialties within a single clinic is a highly beneficial approach to improving patient care. For example, I can ask Ash to review previous ultrasound images and interpret them, or I might ask Aaron for advice, even when the patient choses a different specialist.
K: Saige, at its very heart, is about creating a safe place for women and those presumed
female at birth to receive appropriate and timely access to care. I have loved working in woman’s health for two decades now and will remain at the Coffs Harbour Women’s Health Centre in addition to Saige. I love my team at Health Voyage but I plan to draw upon my recent postgraduate studies in Reproductive Medicine to focus on providing some different health care options. The access to specialists and quality imaging within Saige assists in providing these services.
A: 100% agree with Kristen and René. I have been working as a regional sonographer for 12 years now and naturally pursued women’s health imaging. As a local
girl to Coffs, I see the disparities between regional and city health are particularly worse for women. This integrated approach will reduce gaps in communication between care providers and I have dreamt for years to work in this collaborative model.
How did this dream team come together?
K: It was Aaron. Though we’re not sure when he did it.
A: Ha. For a while Aaron and I had been speaking about integrated specialist consultation and ultrasound for things like deep infiltrating endometriosis and 1st trimester anatomy. Suddenly those conversations changed just a little and now I
am exactly where I feel I need to be.
R: Working in women’s health has always been a passion. The idea of undertaking focused gynaecological care in a multidisciplinary women’s health team was like a gift in my lap one day. An out of the blue message turned to a conversation which quickly turned to planning my first day.
K: Yep. I think it has been a common dream for all of us - to bring a creative, holistic and collaborative approach to the way we practice. Aaron and I have spoken about it often over the last 5 years but then one day he turned and said, “I think we can actually do this”. Turns out he’s been chipping away
at the obstacles, protocols, and logistics. When he called each of us though, it wasn’t to work at Saige but rather create Saige Health together and the emails and texts started to fly and this very creative and collaborative process has brought the vision to reality.
As we all know, women’s health extends beyond just pregnancy. What are you passionate about?
R: Supporting women’s reproductive choices, reducing barriers in menopause care, and recognising that women’s health care has to be holistic and compassionate.
A: All things ultrasound! I strongly believe best care comes from best practice being achieved whether that be endometriosis, complex gynaecology issues/variants, obstetric or pelvic floor dysfunctions.
menopause, menstruation difficulties, contraception, unplanned pregnancy, and early pregnancy support.
A: We have started with pelvic ultrasounds, including pregnancy dating, and ovulation tracking. We are working on some equipment and process to increase the ultrasound service to include 3D/4D baby bonding scans, deep infiltrating endometriosis (DIE), fertility assessment, and later pregnancy scans.
I think it has been a common dream for all of us - to bring a creative, holistic and collaborative approach to the way we practice. Aaron and I have spoken about it o en over the last 5 years but then one day he turned and said, “I think we can actually do this.
K: My passions encompass all the pieces that help support people on the transition to parenthood and help future generations thrive. I am a lifelong learner, always wanting to find more knowledge, strategies, and tools to help.
You sound like you all have different passions, what services do you offer at Saige?
K: I offer services including preconception counselling, early fertility work up, early pregnancy care, sexual health screening, postnatal care, menstrual management and contraception.
R: I offer all services related to women’s health with particular interest in
Do I need a referral to come to Saige Health?
R: Just like other GPs, you won’t need a referral to see Kristen or myself at Saige. The main difference is that we are not here to replace your regular family doctor or become your “usual” GP. We will only provide specific consultation on health needs related to female reproductive system concerns including contraception, fertility, and menopause.
K: You will however need a referral to receive a Medicare rebate when consulting with Dr Aaron Budden or having an ultrasound.
Finally, where do we find you?
We are physically located in the Specialist Medical Centre on the Coffs Harbour Health Campus, Level 2, Suite 209, just outside the elevator.
You can reach out to the practice through email (reception@saigehealth.com.au) or phone (6652 1266). The practice website is under development but we are hoping this will progress soon and look towards online bookings in the future.
Thank you.

Environmental disasters, whether they are bushfires, floods, cyclones, or other catastrophic events, can leave a lasting impact on communities. But for children, the effects can be particularly profound, shaping their emotional, psychological, and even physical wellbeing. When an environmental disaster strikes, children are often among the most vulnerable. Unlike adults, they may not fully understand what’s happening, which can heighten their fear and confusion.
Developmental Considerations. Children, especially younger ones, lack of understanding can heighten feelings of fear, confusion, and helplessness. Children are still developing the ability to regulate their emotions, which may impact their ability to process intense feelings of fear, grief, or loss. Unlike adults, children have not yet developed effective coping mechanisms to deal with stress and trauma so they rely heavily on caregivers for emotional support and guidance. If caregivers are also affected by the disaster, children may feel even more insecure and anxious. Disruptions to the necessities of food, shelter and medical care during a disaster can have a more significant impact on children than on adults. In the chaos of a disaster, children may become separated from their caregivers, leading to intense fear, confusion, and feelings of abandonment. There are physical vulnerability considerations, such as children’s smaller bodies making them more susceptible to physical harm during disasters, such as injuries from debris or exposure to hazardous materials. Their immune systems are still developing, making them more vulnerable to illnesses that may arise from poor sanitation, contaminated water, or lack of medical care in the aftermath of a disaster. Children
are more sensitive to environmental toxins, such as polluted air or water, which can have long-term health consequences.
Psychological Vulnerability. Traumatic events can leave a lasting impression on children, shaping their worldview and sense of safety. They may develop irrational fears or phobias related to the disaster. Younger children may lack the vocabulary or understanding to articulate their feelings, leading to behavioural changes or physical symptoms as expressions of stress.
Children who experience environmental disasters and trauma can face a range of effects that can vary depending on the child’s age, the severity of the disaster, the level of support they receive, and their resilience. Feelings of fear, shock, anxiety, sadness, helplessness or anger are common. The suddenness of a disaster can be overwhelming. Behavioural changes, such as increased clinginess, withdrawal, or aggression may be observed. After a flood, a child may feel unsafe even in their own home, associating rain with danger. These immediate reactions are natural, but they can evolve into longer-term challenges if not addressed. You may observe regressive behaviours, such as bedwetting or thumb-sucking, especially in younger children and difficulty concentrating or paying attention in school.
Physical aspects you may observe are sleep disturbances, including nightmares or insomnia. Somatic complaints like headaches, stomach aches, fatigue and changes in appetite may be common. Children may have difficulties with memory or learning due to stress. Struggles with peer relationships or social withdrawal may also be a factor.
Protective Measures. To address these vulnerabilities, it is essential to implement
child-focused interventions during and after environmental disasters. Provide immediate emotional support to help children process their experiences and reduce the risk of long-term trauma. We can do this by establishing childfriendly spaces where children can play, learn, and feel safe. Supportive relationships with caregivers or trusted adults can provide a sense of safety and stability. Reassure children that they are safe and to continue routines to provide a sense of normalcy. Encourage open communication and allow children to express their feelings in their way, whether through talking, drawing, or playing. These experiences also help children regain a sense of control and hope. Avoid dismissing their fears, no matter how small they may seem. Children look to adults for cues and show them how to manage stress by practising mindfulness, staying calm, and seeking support when needed. Early intervention, such as counselling may help children process their experiences and develop coping strategies.
Environmental disasters are a stark reminder of how interconnected we are with the world around us. While we cannot always prevent these events, we can take steps to protect the most vulnerable among us, our children. By understanding and addressing the unique vulnerabilities of children, we can better support their recovery and resilience in the face of environmental disasters and trauma.
If you are a parent, teacher, or caregiver, remember that your support can make all the difference. By creating a safe, nurturing environment, you can help children heal and thrive, even in the face of life’s greatest challenges.
Until next time, be kind and gentle with yourself.

Grief is one of life’s most profound experiences, bringing deep emotional pain, but also an opportunity for growth. Loss comes in many forms - death, the end of a relationship, health struggles, or career changes. Whatever its nature, grief affects your health and wellbeing. While nothing can erase the pain, mindfulness can help us navigate it with awareness and resilience.
Breathe with Intention
without judgment. When negativity arises, gently shift your focus toward affirmations or reflections on the love and joy shared. This shift fosters resilience and lightens emotional weight.
Grief can cause stress, rapid breathing, and increased heart rate.
Mindful breathing helps calm the nervous system
Grief can cause stress, rapid breathing, and increased heart rate. Mindful breathing helps calm the nervous system. Deep, slow breaths - especially longer exhales - send signals to the brain to relax. When overwhelmed, pause and focus on your breath to find a moment of relief.
Negative thinking often accompanies grief, replaying regrets or worst-case scenarios. Mindfulness helps us observe these thoughts
Language holds power - both in self-talk and conversations with others. Words can reinforce pain or aid healing. Instead of saying, “I’ll never get through this,” try, “I’m taking it one step at a time.” Speaking with self-compassion reframes grief and encourages progress.
Isolation is tempting in grief, but connection is vital. Seeking support from friends, family, or a grief group brings comfort. Even if words feel inadequate, the presence of others who care helps. Accepting support is an act of self-care, not weakness.
Engaging in activities provides purpose. Volunteering or supporting others fosters connection and meaning. Whether through community work, creative expression, or acts
of kindness, mindful action transforms pain into something healing.
Grief often affects appetite, leading to emotional eating or neglecting nutrition. Whole, nutrient-rich foods support physical and emotional well-being. Prioritise balanced meals that nourish your body and mind, helping you stay grounded.
Exercise releases tension and improves mood. Whether it’s walking, yoga, or another activity, movement shifts stagnant emotions and promotes renewal. Even small physical activities provide strength and resilience.
Grief can be overwhelming, and professional guidance may be needed. Speaking to your GP or a mental health professional can help you navigate emotions and develop coping strategies. Seeking help is a sign of strength.
Grief is inevitable, but mindfulness helps us acknowledge emotions while creating space for healing. It does not erase loss but allows us to be present with our pain and find peace amid sorrow. Healing isn’t about forgetting— it’s about learning to carry loss with grace and moving forward, one mindful step at a time.

Entering aged care is a significant and often challenging transition, not only for the individual but also for their family. The process can be complex, with many decisions to make and numerous financial considerations. Here are some practical tips to help families navigate the aged care system with greater ease and confidence.
One of the most common mistakes families make is waiting until a crisis hits before making plans. Early planning allows families to explore all available options and make informed decisions without the pressure of time constraints. Begin by having open and honest conversations about future care needs and preferences. Understanding your loved one’s wishes and exploring various care options early on can prevent stress and panic later. Understand the Costs
Aged care costs can vary widely depending on the type of care required and the facility. These costs generally include accommodation fees, daily care fees, and means-tested fees. It is crucial to have a clear understanding of these expenses and how they will impact your financial situation. Take the time to research and compare different aged care facilities to find the best fit for your budget and care needs.
There are several funding options available to help cover aged care costs, including government subsidies, pensions, and personal savings. Understanding what financial assistance is available and how to access it can significantly ease the financial burden. Consider consulting an aged care specialist financial planner to explore all potential funding support and develop a comprehensive financial plan.
Maximise Benefits and Entitlements
Ensuring that your loved one receives all the benefits and entitlements they are eligible for is essential. This includes accommodation supplements and other government support programs.
Moving into residential aged care can be stressful, and mistakes can be costly. Avoid rushing decisions about room payments and take the time to understand all available payment options. Remember that you have 28 days after moving into care to decide how to pay. Additionally, make sure to plan for longterm financial needs, not just the immediate costs.
The emotional transition to aged care can be just as challenging as the financial one. Attachment to the family home and the fear of losing independence are common concerns. Gentle preparation, such as decluttering and
deciding which possessions are most important, can help ease this transition. Look for aged care providers that offer robust programs to maintain hobbies and social engagement, as these can significantly enhance quality of life.
Seek Professional Advice
Navigating the aged care system is complex, and it is important not to go through it alone. Consulting with an accredited aged care professional can provide peace of mind and ensure that you are making the best decisions for your loved one’s future. They can offer personalised advice tailored to your specific circumstances, helping you understand the financial implications and explore all available options.
In conclusion, early planning, understanding the costs, maximising benefits, avoiding common mistakes, and considering the emotional aspects are key to a smoother transition into aged care.
For more information or personalised advice, visit burleyagedcareadvice.com.au or call my office on 0431 414 799. As an Accredited Aged Care Professional™, I can help you get started and remove some of the stress and worry from your future care needs.
This advice is general in nature and everyone’s circumstances are different. It’s important to speak to a licensed financial adviser to get advice tailored to your situation.
e Orara Valley Axemen are back! ey have been o cially accepted into the Hastings League for 2025, and club President Stevan Cetinich is confident this is going to be a great fit for the club and an opportunity for the sport and its players to continue to grow in our area.
Hi Steve. How does it feel to have the Orara Valley Axemen officially accepted into the Hastings League for 2025?
It’s so exciting having footy in the Valley again. We have a wonderful supporter base who have missed the enjoyment of rugby league being played at the Coramba Sports Ground. What were the biggest challenges the club faced after leaving Group 2, and how did you work through them?
The main challenges we faced were low playing numbers, and volunteers. We’ve worked hard over the last few months to engage with our community to increase volunteer participation and have formed a small, but hard working committee to get the wheels in motion again after a long period of recession for the club. Sporting clubs are nothing without volunteers who give up their time for their community, so we are grateful for their input. What made the Hastings League the right choice for Orara Valley’s future?
The Axemen have struggled to field 3 senior men’s teams for some time now, but we still have a strong core of people that love to play footy. The Hastings League allows us to continue playing rugby league in the valley within a competition that aligns more closely with our strong family values and love for the game.
against over the years. It’s also pleasing to see clubs that have such a deep and rich history in the sport able to continue to compete.
The club has a strong supporter base, how important has their backing been in making this transition?
We couldn’t possibly be doing this without our supporters. When we made the decision to join the Hastings League it was our community members, along with our coach, Steve Sanders, who was involved in our historic reserve grade grand final victory in 2008 that approached us and encouraged us to enter the competition. That alone shows the love and support our community has for our club.
What can fans expect from the Axemen in this new competition?
Our primary goal is to play consistent, competitive football to build sustainability for the future of the club. We’re confident we’ll compete well in this league, with numerous players in our squad having played a lot of quality football over the years. We have Group 2 grand final winners, and players with extensive 1st grade experience that will ensure we compete every week.
We’re confident we’ll compete well in this league, with numerous players in our squad having played a lot of quality football over the years.
How do you think the new Northern Division will change the dynamic of the Hastings League?
The Northern Division is an exciting opportunity to grow the game within one of the longest continuously running competitions in Australia, and to encourage people to play the sport because of the love for footy. I think the Hastings League will continue to grow and strengthen in this Northern region.
What are you most excited about in terms of competition with teams like Bellingen, Bowraville, and South West Rocks?
It’s exciting to be playing against new teams, but also to play against players that we’ve played
How do you see this move benefiting younger players in the Valley? Do you think having a senior side back on the field will help strengthen junior participation?
The junior and senior clubs operate separately, but they need each other to be successful. Without our junior club we won’t have senior players to continue the growth of the club, and without the senior club the juniors don’t have role models to look up to. This decision allows us to support each other’s growth into the future.
How do you see the future of rugby league in the Orara Valley and the broader region?
This can only be positive for the Orara Valley continuing to have football in the area, but also for the Coffs Coast in general. It will allow smaller clubs the ability to continue to exist and grow the sport in smaller regional communities and this can only be a good thing for our game.
Thanks Stevan.
our career journey is anything but ordinaryfrom NSW Police Officer to Sex & Relationship Coach, tell us all the details! I’ve always been obsessed with what makes people tick, firstly as a police officer reading body language in all sorts of situations, and now as a sex and relationship coach, helping women read their own desires. As a NSW Police Officer, I saw everything - from domestic disputes to the quiet, unseen struggles happening behind closed doors. People don’t call the cops when they’re happy. They call when something’s broken, and that was true for so many couples I encountered.

It’s when they realise confidence isn’t something you’re just “born with” - it’s a skill, and one they can actually learn. You can feel the pressure drop when that realisation hits.
e Most Unexpected Career Pivot... at Makes Perfect Sense to me (& my clients).
I started noticing a pattern. Relationships weren’t falling apart because of big things, it was the small, everyday disconnects that built up over time: miscommunication, resentment, and total lack of intimacy.
So after leaving the force, I went all in studying neuro-linguistic programming, somatic intimacy, and what makes people tick in AND out of the bedroom. Now, as President of the Business Women’s Network in Coffs, I get to connect with powerhouse
So many women believe they’re just not that sexual or that they’re missing some “sexy woman” gene, but once we start working together, they feel different in their body. They can communicate what they want without hesitation, and actually enjoy sex instead of treating it like another task on their to-do list.
I’ll never forget one client who sent me a voice note whisper-yelling:
“Courtney, WHAT have you done to me?! I just initiated for the first time in YEARS, and he looked at me like I was his last meal.”
That’s what it’s about. Not just “getting better at sex” but shifting how you see yourself in
the bedroom. From hesitant and unsure to magnetic, playful, and completely in control. Living and working on the Coffs Coast sounds like a dream. What makes it the perfect backdrop for your work? Coffs is stunning - and trust me, I’ve seen it from all angles. Back in my police days, I saw the grittier side of town. But now? I get to enjoy it in all its coastal glory and lusty vibes. There’s something about ocean air and golden-hour swims that makes it the perfect place for what I do.
The women here are driven, successful, and refuse to settle for a life that’s just “fine”which is exactly who I love working with. My story isn’t about shock value—it’s about what’s possible when you stop avoiding the real stuff. My coaching gives high-performing women a safe space to get honest and unlock the bedroom confidence they’ve been quietly craving.
And let’s be honest, finishing a spicy coaching call and heading straight to the beach? Chef’s kiss.

Because confidence in the bedroom isn’t something you’re born with - it’s a skill and I’ll teach you exactly how to master it! Thanks Courtney.
Every day, across Australia and right here in our own community, Lifeline answers the calls from Australians in crisis.
We are here 24/7, every single day of the year, for those facing their darkest moments. Whether someone is struggling with mental health concerns, financial hardship, relationship breakdowns, loneliness, domestic violence, or thoughts of suicide, we provide a vital connection— offering hope, support, and reassurance that no one has to face their struggles alone.
The need has never been greater. Since 2019, the demand for Lifeline’s services has doubled, with over one million Australians reaching out every year. Every single call matters.
For me, this work is deeply personal. In a small community like ours, where we all know each other, the impact of suicide is profound. When we lose someone—a friend, a colleague, a loved one—the ripple effect is devastating. This is why our service isn’t just important— it’s essential. But we need to break down the stigma that still surrounds suicide. The pain of feeling hopeless, overwhelmed, or alone is very real, and far too many people suffer in silence.
Every day, I am inspired by our volunteers— ordinary people doing extraordinary work. They sit with help-seekers in their pain, offering compassion and understanding. They may never know the outcome of that conversation, but in that moment, they are a lifeline.
With one in three Australians feeling lonely or isolated, the need for connection has never been greater. And we all have a role to play.

Together, we can ensure no one has to face their darkest moments alone.
Across schools, many students are actively involved in fundraising or volunteering to support organisations and others in need. This demonstration of service leadership is at the heart of social responsibility and promotes human equity and wellbeing through empathy and compassion. Cultivating a global perspective for youth is a key building block for character trait development including self-direction, compassion, integrity in action and a proactive stance toward life. Our role as educators, with family support, is to develop the broad outlook that recognises that inequity exists and we all have a role to play to make a difference and support the community where possible.
Schools have the privilege of witnessing young people commit to service programs. At Bishop Druitt College, we see this through peer support, volunteering with groups like Surfing for the Disabled, assisting with World Vision fundraising, contributing to our Christmas Hamper drive for The Soupie and Warrina Women and Children’s Shelter, participating in our Human Rights Group or in Harmony Day, which advocates for peace. Our Goori Group also plays a vital role in advocating for reconciliation and celebrating
our First Nations heritage. Additionally, our Year 12 students are currently raising funds to fight blood cancer through “Shave for a Cure”, with $7000 raised so far this term. This is service through action, made possible by the support of our community.
Service is a core value of our Anglican schools, one of the five marks of mission, and is reflected in our motto: Faithfulness in Service. We place it within themes for year levels, and extend this ethos to our international experiences, such as our service learning trips to Cambodia.
Kindness matters
We are all familiar with the saying “it is better to give than receive” and this is backed up by research. Engaging in acts of kindness, empathy and giving our time to support others can lead to greater happiness, reduced stress levels and may even lead to a longer life. There are some great reasons to volunteer and make a difference to someone else. If your child becomes involved in a cake stall or fundraiser at school, it is a good sign that they are aware of the importance of helping others.
Hope is powerful
Coffs Coast communities are well known for their generosity in times of difficulty: volunteering for surf patrols, the SES or Rural Fire Service, and many locals have assisted
in northern flood affected communities. It makes a difference when our children see family, parents and carers volunteer to help others - they are more likely to become involved themselves as they get older and this is a wonderful legacy to develop in a family. What should I encourage my child to do?
Encourage them to do something they enjoy. Whether it’s being involved in the Environment Club, reading to younger students, helping new students, baking at home for the school cake sale or collecting cans to be recycled, our children will often find meaning in activities they care about. It is a great place to start, and they can also ask their teacher for some ideas.
Every act of service, no matter how small, contributes to a hopeful future in our community and beyond. During December I saw this in some of the most difficult conditions of a country at war in Ukraine. Volunteering to provide meals and connection to hundreds of people each day was powerful for those communities to see that they were not forgotten and it made me more aware of how connected we all are across the globe. As the saying goes, “If you can be anything today, be kind” - Unknown.

Announces rebranding of 22 offices across NSW
Lifestyle Group, a trusted name in property services, is excited to announce the acquisition of Real Estate Of Distinction – Bellingen along with the rebranding of its other 21 offices, spanning from Forster to Brunswick Heads, effective 1 March 2025 - with the business formerly known as “Elders Lifestyle Group” now branded “Lifestyle.”
This significant move into the Bellingen market marks the first step towards Lifestyle’s plan for growth into the Coffs Coast, with an additional two real estate offices in the Coffs region planned to move into the Lifestyle Group within the next three months.
Since its inception, the Lifestyle Group has experienced remarkable growth, expanding
its footprint and reinforcing its reputation as a trusted real estate partner. With a dedicated team of professionals and a focus on exceptional client experiences, the company has consistently set new benchmarks in the industry.
The rebranding initiative represents a fresh, dynamic chapter in the Lifestyle Group's journey, reinforcing its continued commitment to offering outstanding experiences in real estate. With a 200+ workforce and 22 office

locations now unified under a bold new identity, the group will continue to offer the same high standard of service that clients have come to expect over the years. With over 8,000 properties under management, 500 holiday managements and transacting over 1,100 sales totalling $830m in 2024, the exponential growth of the business has shaped a new and fresh way forward.
CEO & Founder, David Gray, expressed his excitement about the rebrand, stating, “This is
a celebration of the growth and transformation that the Lifestyle Group has undergone over the past eight years. As we enter this new chapter, we remain committed to our core values of embracing change, a growth mindset, a relationship focus, and thriving on energy. Our clients have always been at the heart of everything we do, and we are deeply grateful for their ongoing loyalty. We look forward to continuing to work with them and to making an even greater impact in the communities we serve.”
Jonathan Maggs, Lifestyle’s Head of Brand & Client Experience, shared his enthusiasm about the rebrand’s significance, adding, “Our refreshed brand identity represents more than just a new look – it’s a reflection of our journey and our unwavering commitment to our clients. The new brand direction is designed to better connect with the diverse communities across our footprint while reinforcing the exceptional, personalised service that the Lifestyle Group is known for. We’re excited to continue building relationships with our clients and strengthening our presence as a trusted

partner in their real estate journey.”
David Gray also remarked about the group's exit from one of Australia’s oldest real estate brands “Elders have been accommodating and professional in our parting of ways, and I wish them every success. I think there has been somewhat of an unspoken understanding for a while now that we were rapidly growing to a size that no longer fitted operating in a franchise model. As the Lifestyle Group evolved, it was clear that the time had come for us to establish our own identity. Our growth required something more unique - something that was distinctly ours.”
The Lifestyle journey began with the acquisition of Elders Port Macquarie in 2017 - now the group’s headquarters - with this purchase including Elders Wauchope. In 2018, Dave added Elders Crescent Head, marking the beginning of what would soon be known as the “Elders Lifestyle Group.” Over the years, the group expanded across the Mid North Coast and Northern NSW, acquiring additional Elders offices in Forster, Evans Head, and Grafton, along with three locations each in Camden Haven and the Macleay Valley. More recent acquisitions included Ballina and Lismore. Many other independent and franchise offices were rebranded as Elders Lifestyle Group, further strengthening their presence in the region.

He noted “I’ve also picked up some great businesses managing holiday properties in some of the most unbelievable seaside spots like Wooli, Yamba and Brunswick Heads, complimenting our real estate business. At times it has posed a few ‘square peg, round hole’ moments under the framework of a franchise model, but we’ve stayed true to our brand, succeeded and grown across some amazing parts of this region. As a group, we’re so lucky to live and work in some of the best places on earth.”
Jonathan Maggs commented -“as a CEO, Dave has a level of dedication to his team and their own personal successes that I’ve not seen in my thirty year career, investing heavily in their personal and professional development. I’ve worked on the periphery with Dave since the inception of the Lifestyle Group - initially as a design consultant to ensure the front of house and workspaces of his offices had a consistency as they came on board - and

As 2025 accelerates and our lives seem to become even busier, April presents us with an important moment to slow down, to reflect, and to remember with both pride and sorrow.
Anzac Day, on April 25, is our solemn national day of remembrance when we commemorate our Diggers who have served and died in all wars, conflicts and peacekeeping operations.
On Anzac Day, we reflect on the contribution and suffering of all those who have served, and who continue to serve, this great nation.
The Anzac legend holds a special place in the history and events of Australia. Indeed, the Spirit of Anzac remains enormously relevant today.
Anzac represents many things typically Australian - courage, mateship, honour, sacrifice and loyalty.
All these qualities of character were combined 110 years ago when our brave soldiers charged onto the beaches at Gallipoli in a fight for their lives.
In such tough times, they still maintained a good sense of humour and a will to win - so typically Aussie.
The Australian and New Zealand Army Corps (ANZACs) formed part of an Allied expedition which set out in 1915 to capture the Gallipoli Peninsula to open the way to the Black Sea for the Allied Navies.
The Anzac force landed at Gallipoli at dawn on April 25, meeting fierce resistance.
What had been planned as a raid to knock Turkey out of the war soon became a stalemate and the campaign was fought for eight months.
At the end of 1915, Allied forces were evacuated. There were 11,409 Anzacs who died and their heroism and courage left a powerful legacy known as the Spirit of Anzac.
in various theatres of war and who have contributed to the freedom we all enjoy today. Australians everywhere will join together at Anzac Day commemoration services to remember all those personnel who have served and those who made the ultimate sacrifice.
At the end of 1915, Allied forces were evacuated. ere were 11,409 Anzacs who died and their heroism and courage le a powerful legacy known as the Spirit of Anzac.
This spirit has become stronger with time and today it represents a kindred bond for our men and women who serve.
All communities - including those on the Coffs Coast and other parts of regional Australia - have men and women who have served
We remember not only the first Anzacs at Gallipoli where the legend was born in a foreign land in 1915, but those in wars and conflicts before and since The Great War.
This year also marks the 80th anniversary of the end of World War Two in 1945.
Anzac Day is a chance for us to stop and remember those who have served, fought and died in defence of this great country.
I encourage you to take the opportunity this Anzac Day to attend a local service on the Coffs Coast to honour all the men and women, past and present, who have given everything for the freedom we all enjoy.
Angel Bell is the owner of Future Vintage, which has recently relocated from Bellingen to Co s Central, and boasts a vibrant and eclectic collection of vintage clothing and homewares!
Hi Angel. Can you tell us about Future Vintage and the concept behind it?
Future Vintage opened in Bellingen in 2022 and I purchased the business a year ago. The concept behind Future Vintage is providing curated quality vintage as well as a few new unique clothing items and some super cool retro homewares. Vintage fashion is timeless, stylish, nostalgic and sustainable.
You have recently moved the store from Bellingen to Coffs Central, can you tell us about the move and where we can find you now?
Yes, Bellingen was great but I felt that Coffs Harbour needed some vintage love! We have just moved into Coffs Central, on the second floor near the food court. It’s great to see some familiar faces and meet lots of new ones too! The current Coffs Central location is a pop up store, we will be there for at least a
few months (and it could be longer) so come and check it out soon! We will keep our socials updated so you know where to find us.
What does vintage fashion mean to you, and why do you think it’s making such a big comeback?
I love that clothing items get a second life, I love knowing the stories behind pieces and I love that someone else continues the story.
I love that clothing items get a second life. I love knowing the stories behind pieces and I love that someone else continues the story. I think that a lot of people are embracing slow fashion and sustainability movements and people love wearing one of a kind, unique, ethically sourced clothing.
How do you go about sourcing your vintage pieces?
Numerous ways. When I purchased the business, it came with a great collection. I like to travel, so I like to source pieces of clothing from different places. I still have a couple of pieces that I purchased in Rome last year. I regularly get stock from Melbourne, Sydney and Byron as well as some great stuff from the States. A lot of the best pieces have come from customers
bringing in items they have held onto for years or were their mum’s or aunties etc.. I am always looking for great unique pieces, definitely one of the best parts of the job!
Are there any specific designers or styles you always look for?
Always unique one of a kind items. Traditional cotton Mexican dresses are always very popular and vintage denim overalls and jeans. We have a great range of a lot of different styles. Amazing cotton nighties from the 50’s, gorgeous gowns from the 60’s, 70’s, classic 80’s strapless numbers, great pieces from the 90’s, and a cool collection of jeans and denim shorts. A great selection of mens shirts, shorts and jeans. We have amazing vintage skirts from India and all the classics. We also have vintage deadstock sunglasses which are very popular! How do vintage clothes compare to fast fashion in terms of quality and
sustainability?
Australia has one of the highest rates of textile waste in the world sending more than 800,000 tons of textiles to landfill each year, mostly coming from discarded clothing.
Australia has one of the highest rates of textile waste in the world sending more than 800,000 tons of textiles to landfill each year, mostly coming from discarded clothing. Fast fashion’s rapid production cycle encourages consumers to buy more, wear less and toss clothing after a few uses creating an unsustainable cycle of waste. Vintage fashion directly counters this waste by keeping clothing in circulation for longer.
combination if you love a piece, and it fits amazingly. People also have to understand that things have been pre loved so sometimes there can be a little wear and tear.
Have you noticed any trends or certain decades becoming more popular recently? Definitely, I think now especially the younger generation are loving the Y2K fashion; baggy oversized jeans and tees. We have an amazing collection just in of vintage cotton tees. Different generations like different styles and eras so we have an eclectic collection to cater for all the different styles and trends.
Do you see the demand for vintage fashion continuing to grow in the future?
What advice would you give to someone new to buying vintage clothing?
Try everything on! Obviously with vintage it’s one of a kind, so it’s not like we can get you the next size up or down. It is a winning
Absolutely, shopping vintage is more than just a trend, it is a powerful step toward sustainability. The future is definitely Vintage! Thanks Angel.
Over the past 6 years, I have advocated in Canberra for the Coffs Harbour community and delivered funding for hundreds of projects across the Coffs Coast. I am incredibly proud of what I have had a part in delivering over that time, alongside our NSW MP Gurmesh Singh and passionate local government representatives and community groups.
Some highlights of federal funding that has been delivered in my time as your Federal MP:

This successful initiative is now being used as the benchmark for more projects like it across the country.
This upgrade brought a much-loved basketball facility back to life, attracting state and national competitions back to the region.

Over the span of my career prior to having the privilege of being elected as the Federal Member for Cowper in 2019, I was a police officer, police prosecutor, defence lawyer and small business owner. Shane Brooks is a wellknown name in the Co s Harbour real estate scene. As the owner of Stone Real Estate Co s Harbour, Shane leads a successful team of 15 agents, providing professional sales and property management services across the region. In this interview, we gain insights into the local property market and what makes his team stand out.
with SHANE BROOKS PRINCIPAL & LICENSEE OF STONE REAL ESTATE COFFS HARBOUR
hat sets Stone Real Estate Coffs Harbour apart from other agencies? It’s definitely our team. We’ve assembled a highly skilled group of professionals who share a commitment to delivering exceptional service to our clients. Our team includes sales agents and property managers and our approach is comprehensive and turn key. We cater to first-time buyers, downsizers, upsizers and seasoned investors alike, ensuring every client’s needs are met with care and professionalism. Stone Real Estate’s national network gives us access to state of the art technology, systems and marketing initiatives as well as to buyers from all over Australia looking to relocate to the beautiful Coffs Coast.
What trends are you seeing in the Coffs Coast real estate market, and how has it impacted your business? The market here has been very active, especially in recent years. A lot of people from Sydney and Melbourne are relocating to the Coffs Coast for a sea change. This has driven demand for both residential and lifestyle properties, which has been great for business. Additionally, investment properties are
in demand as more people see the benefits of owning in a region with a desirable lifestyle and more affordable prices than the big cities.
You lead a team of 15 agents. What’s the key to building such a successful team?
Communication, trust and respect are key. We ensure every team member feels supported and valued, fostering a positive work culture of bigger and better. I lead by example, staying hands-on with clients and guiding the team through challenges. We also prioritise regular training to keep our agents up-to-date with market trends. When the team thrives, the business thrives.
The Coffs Coast is known for its natural beauty. How do you incorporate the local lifestyle into your real estate services? The lifestyle here is one of the major selling points. People are drawn to the beaches, hinterland, and relaxed pace of life. We focus on showcasing not just properties but also the lifestyle that comes with them. Whether someone’s looking for a family home or a weekend retreat, we make sure to highlight the benefits of living in such a beautiful area and match properties with a client’s lifestyle needs. What advice would you give to someone
looking to buy property on the Coffs Coast? Do your research. The market here is competitive, so it’s crucial to understand what’s available and the pricing trends. I also recommend getting pre-approval for finance, as it strengthens your position when making an offer. Lastly, work with a reputable local agent who knows the market well, as their expertise can make all the difference.
What do you see for the future of the Coffs Coast real estate market and Stone Real Estate? The future looks bright. We’ll continue to see demand grow, particularly for lifestyle properties. The region’s infrastructure is improving, which will attract more businesses and services, further boosting its appeal. As for Stone Real Estate, we aim to continue providing exceptional service and expanding our team to meet demand. We’re always looking for ways to stay ahead of market trends and stay at the leading edge of sales and property management services.
Shane, thank you for your insights today. We wish you continued success! It’s been a pleasure! I’m excited for what the future holds for both the Coffs Coast and Stone Real Estate. Thanks Shane.

FROM CLAYTON & FOSTER
Knowing what’s around the corner is hugely valuable as a business leader, however we are trading in a world where uncertainty waits around every corner – making it difficult to predict the future business landscape and what your next move should be.
You can’t change the evolving economic, political and business threats in the world, but there are ways to thrive and reduce the uncertainty.
Dialling down the uncertainty, to gain a competitive edge
Uncertainty affects your ability to trade. Not knowing if your costs will rise or fall, or if there’s a talent shortage or surplus, makes it difficult to make rock-solid decisions and plans.
Financial forecasting and planning:
Carrying out regular cashflow forecasting and budgeting helps you anticipate any potential financial challenges. Good cashflow forecasting, coupled with scenario planning, helps you make informed decisions about your spending and where you may need additional funding.
Performance monitoring and analysis:
Tracking important metrics and having a key performance indicator (KPI) dashboard helps you review your performance against targets and look for the areas of improvement.
Being aware of legislative changes, tax reliefs and allowances, and available government grants, helps you navigate the uncertainty.
Your goal in the current environment is not to remove these external threats, it’s to reduce some of the uncertainty through clear planning and inventive strategic thinking.
There are areas of your business that can help to reduce the uncertainty.
Monitoring those KPIs keeps you in control, even if external factors and threats are proving to be difficult.
Strategic business reviews:
When was the last time you revisited your business plan? Updating your strategy and business plan helps you stay aligned with your goals, even if external factors and changing market conditions are making trading difficult. Remember, no business plan is written in stone!
Getting proactive with tax updates:
As the business landscape changes, the government is likely to look for ways to inspire enterprise and boost the economy. Being aware of legislative changes, tax reliefs and allowances, and available government grants, helps you navigate the uncertainty. You can keep compliant, maximise any benefits and see the positive impact on your capital position. Business Diversification & Growth Strategies:
Being able to flex and change your strategic direction gives you a huge competitive edge. Brainstorm ideas for ways you could diversify your offering and explore new opportunities. This could mean new products, new revenue streams and even partnering with other small businesses – both inside and outside your existing sector.
There’s no denying that we are trading in difficult times. But getting proactive with your planning, forecasting and strategic thinking makes the road ahead clearer.
Come and talk to us about the key areas of uncertainty in your business – and find out how we can guide you through these uncertain times and out the other side.
