TIME FOR REAL CHANGE
I’m Caz Heise, and as your independent candidate, I am ready to put this region first.
We have much to celebrate is the region I’m proud to have called home for the past 20 years. Our stunning coastline, vibrant local arts scene and resilience in the face of adversity is worth celebration. However, we are facing major challenges. For example, we have some of the worst health outcomes in the country, a severe childcare shortage, and mobile black spots that are putting lives and livelihoods at risk.
Fixing our broken healthcare system
Our healthcare system is failing too many people. GP shortages leave entire towns without bulk-billing doctors, mental health services are underfunded, aged care is in crisis, and NDIS participants face unacceptable delays.
That’s why I have released a plan for:
• More bulk-billing doctors and urgent care clinics so people can see a GP when they need one.
• Expanding mental health services by increasing funding for local organisations and ensuring regional communities get their fair share.
• A stronger aged care workforce to ensure older residents receive the dignity and care they deserve.
• A better NDIS that delivers timely and fair support to participants.
“As a nurse and healthcare leader, I know firsthand what’s broken - and how to fix it.”
Making childcare accessible and affordable
Families in Cowper are struggling to find childcare. I’ve just released analysis showing that there simply aren’t enough placesmuch of our community is classified as a childcare desert, meaning there are more than three children per available place. In some parts of our region, there are seven children for every one childcare spot.
This crisis is forcing parents - especially women and healthcare workers - out of the workforce.
We need urgent action to:
• Expand childcare places with more centres and family daycare options.
• Make childcare more affordable with increased federal support.
• Support and retain early childhood educators with better pay and conditions.
• Improve flexibility, including out-ofhours and rural childcare solutions.
• Childcare isn’t just a service - it’s essential for working families, local businesses, and our economy.
Let’s talk about mobile black spots - a very important issue and a challenge that many of you have raised.
Reliable mobile coverage is essential for safety, business, and daily life - but Cowper has been neglected in mobile infrastructure funding.
My recent analysis found that Cowper received just six funded base stations across eight funding rounds - compared to 12 in neighbouring Lyne and 48 in Indi, 662% more over 10 years. The difference? Indi had independent MPs who worked with their community to develop a Regional Connectivity Plan that delivered results. This failure puts lives at risk during emergencies and hurts businesses trying to operate in rural areas. We need a representative who will fight for our fair share of investment and demand better infrastructure for our region.
Delivering real change for Cowper
Over the coming months, I will continue announcing practical policies for our region. This election, we have the power to shape our community. I promise to stand with you, amplify your voices, and fight for a fairer, stronger Cowper.

2025 CITIZEN OF THE YEAR for supporting
Phil McMullen was recently named 2025 Citizen Of The Year at the City Of Coffs Harbour Council Australia Day Awards for his work as a football coach, youth mentor, and advocate for local refugee families.
Phil is the humble and dedicated leader at RISE, a community program supporting youth from diverse and refugee backgrounds.
Hplayed rugby league and I broke my arm and couldn’t play, so I started kicking a soccer ball around and that was it, I think I was 7 years old. Our garage had a brick wall so I spent hours just kicking up against the wall. I loved it and practiced every day, much to my mother's concerns.
Can you share a bit about your work with RISE? What is this initiative all about and how does it run?
i Phil, congratulations on being named the 2025 Citizen of the Year at the Australia Day Awards! What does this recognition mean to you personally, and how did it feel to hear you had won this award?
It means so much to me, it’s very special and I'm still coming to terms with it, but it’s an honour to be named Citizen of the Year. You’ve been involved in football for many years, where does your passion for football come from and when did you first fall in love with the game?
My work with Rise is all about letting children do what they love, playing football and removing the obstacles.
My passion came at a young age when I just fell in love with the game. I actually
My work with Rise is all about letting children do what they love, playing football and removing the obstacles. Allowing them to enjoy their passion and at the same time sharing with others, whilst learning so many life lessons and making new friends. We train 5 mornings a week starting at 6.15am until 7.15am, we have a bus that picks the children up starting at 5.30 am, we then provide a healthy breakfast and transport to school. The children decide what days they want to train. There is no pressure, it's what suits them. We have a wonderful group of volunteers who come in and make breakfast each day and this is the time when all the bonding happens. Talking, laughing and generally just being themselves. It's really a highlight of my day.
Continued over...
What challenges do refugee and disadvantaged youth face when settling into a new community, and how does RISE help them overcome these obstacles?
Firstly, being able to connect with others and knowing what’s out there is difficult.
One of the biggest challenges is maintaining the love of the game. This is the number one priority that I think is ge ing missed along the way.
Cost is a major issue, just to be able to play sports is ridiculous. It's very expensive to play and a lot of the families have a number of siblings and they simply cannot afford it. I mentioned our volunteers before and our parent group. These amazing people support a lot of the children to play and without their generosity and kindness a lot of the children would not be able to do what they love. We try to assist where we can.
You worked with the Australian Youth Football Institute in Sydney before returning to Coffs Harbour. What lessons did you bring back with you?
Yes I was there for 12 years. One of the biggest challenges is maintaining the love of the game. This is the number one priority that I think is
getting missed along the way. The emphasis on winning at all costs and the pressure that is put on the children is a major concern. Only the minority will make it to the top level and it’s very tough, there are so many variables.
Play the game for the love of it. Education is, and should always be everyone’s Plan A. Football is often called the ‘world game'. How have you seen it unite and empower young people from different backgrounds?
Yes it is, I think because it’s something that’s easy to play anywhere and you can use anything as the ball; a tin can, a pair of socks or as Pele did - a mango!
As you can see everyone’s equal and some of the best players in the world come from places that have nothing. I have a saying: give them a
ball and they are happy.
You only have to look at Ronaldo and Messi. Everyone knows who they are.
Beyond football skills, what key values and lessons do you hope the young people you mentor come away with?
For me, being a good person is the most important thing. Respect everyone, be kind and work hard at what you do. Treat everyone as you would like to be treated.
What support does RISE need to continue making a difference?
Rise relies heavily on financial support to continue into the future. To be able to provide the things we do and grow the program we need help. We are a local program run by locals for locals, so any support is welcome, and any donations to Rise are tax deductible.
Thanks Phil.

THE WAIFS ARE GOING TO BE PLAYING AT THE HOEY MOEY
ON FRIDAY APRIL 4 , SO WE SPOKE TO VIKKI
THORN ABOUT WHAT WE CAN EXPECT FROM THE SHOW!
Hi Vicki. We're looking forward to The Waifs playing at the Hoey Moey in Coffs Harbour this April. What can fans expect from this show; any hints on the setlist?
It's been a long time since we played Coffs, and I recall it was a pretty rocking and rowdy gig last time so hopefully people can dance and party again this time! We like to tailor our sets to our audience and the venue, and honestly we do so many theatres it's really fun for us to get into a more informal venue where we can rock out a
little bit more! So because it's been so long since we played in Coffs, we’ll probably play a lot of the greatest hits of the Waifs. When we haven't played in a place for a long time that's usually what we like to hit them with, and we have a couple of new songs too so it'll be a mix. You're always gonna hear Lighthouse, you're always gonna hear London Still, and depending on what mood I'm in, you might hear Bridal Train! How does playing in regional areas differ from larger stages in the big cities, and what do you look forward to about the regional shows?
The audience is generally more into it. I think
people in the cities get to pick and choose because they have a lot of music come through. In regional areas you get a mix of audiences; you get a mix of fans that are super stoked that you came because they haven't been able to see you live for a long time, and then you get all these people who are just there to see what you're all about and because there's an event going on so why not check it out! It’s kind of a nice challenge to be trying to win new audiences over, even after 35 years of doing this. The Waifs have been making music together for over 30 years. When you look back at your journey, are there any
standout moments or milestones that you’re especially proud of?
Going on stage and being a part of Wave Aid after the Boxing Day Tsunami. That just had an incredible feeling of Australia coming together in a really positive way; the music was incredible, the day was incredible, the event, everything about it. It was a beautiful feeling that really stands out to me, feeling like a real Australian band and coming together as Australians for a good cause. That was a good one, and winning an ARIA was huge for us, being an independent band. I remember feeling completely out of place there, but also being really embraced and feeling welcomed. That was a little bit of validation I guess for all the hard work we put in to be recognised by a larger more commercial industry. I think the other highlights for us are the smaller ones, just going on stage at festivals and feeling that your audiences have grown up with you and you've all been through the same stuff together, that's a highlight, and when people are singing along to your songs. We managed to capture it on a couple of live albums, the whole audience singing along every word to a particular song is an incredible feeling. When you write something in your bedroom all alone, like Donna tells the story of writing London Still, feeling lonely and lost and far from home, and then to be playing it in front of thousands of people who are singing every word..that's a very cool experience.
is that you're older now. It's hard to get out of bed and do really late nights, it's hard to fall asleep after a gig before 2 or 3 am, and then it's hard to drag yourself out of bed the next day and drive six hours and get on stage again. You know it's physically more taxing now, but I love the band family. It's funny, besides me and Donna because we’re sisters, we don't speak to each other very much at all. We can take seven months off like we just have, and not have any contact with each other, and then I just can't wait to see them again to catch up. It's like a little excuse to check out of your day-to-day life as an adult, and it's fun. It's really fun.
What’s next for The Waifs after this tour?
Do you have any plans to work on any new music or projects?
We probably should do a new album. We’ve been talking about it for about 3 years now. The definitive Waifs album is yet to come - and it is the one we write together!
After all these years of touring, what do you love most about being on the road, and what’s the biggest challenge?
The joy of touring is being with the band in the car! Dave, Ben, Josh, Donna and I. We've got our family lives and then it's so fun to just jump back in a car like you've been doing since you were in your early 20s and just talking, having fun, cracking jokes and listening to music! That’s so much fun, it’s like going on a friends weekend every weekend. The challenge
No, not really. We have had this incredible career where we don't have to make plans. I don't know why that is, but we have no expectations that audiences are still turning out for us, and yet they still do. We will take two years off and then will come out on tour and people will still buy tickets, and I don't take that for granted in this industry because that's a really rare position to be in. For a band that doesn't really do any social media or self promotion, we have this incredible audience, and there's so much loyalty and dedication from them which is just astounding and I'm so grateful for it. It allows us this amazing freedom. We probably should do a new album, but there's no one telling us we need to. There's no pressure coming from anywhere. We've been talking about it for about three years now because I know it's been quite a while since our last album, but the challenge is that I want to write an album together, not as individuals, so it’s just making that happen. I guess our lives are just busy, we haven't prioritised that time, but we should. I think we should because I think the definitive Waifs album is yet to come, and it is the one we write together!
Thanks Vikki.

Multi award winning songstress Wendy Matthews will take the stage at Woopi Brewing Co. on Friday the 7th of March! We had a chat with her about her incredible career and what we can look forward to about this upcoming gig.
Hi Wendy. We’re thrilled to have you performing at Woopi Brewing Co in March! What can audiences expect from this show?
Gosh, well there's no dancing elephants or anything. My band are all Sydney or Brisbane based so they'll be travelling here. We will be spending a couple of days together just to hang out because we don't get to see each other too often and then we'll be heading out for the show. We've got three in a row that weekend and I've never played at the Woolgoolga Brewery. Lots of my friends are around here in town, it's a lovely spot so we're really looking forward to it.
Can you give us some hints about the setlist? Will you be performing a mix of classic hits and newer material?
All of the above! I mean when I go and see somebody I obviously love to hear the songs that I know and love, and that I went to see them because of. There's maybe 10 studio albums over the years of stuff to choose from so basically it’ll be the most successful songs that I've had over the years. There's a little sprinkling of new stuff (or not so retro stuff!), so yeah, it's a pretty diverse little set list.
Do you have a favourite song to perform live, or one that always gets a good reaction from the crowd?
The Day You Went Away always gets a reaction. I can't get away with not doing that one, it's one of those songs that seems to mean something to so many people. I've heard a lot of different stories over the years so that just takes on a life of its own. Sometimes I think ‘Oh my God I can't sing this one more time’ - it really does just sort of take me over every time which I'm grateful for. In terms of a personal favourite song, it depends on the day and it depends on the mood that I'm in. Sometimes I just like to bop around like when I'm vacuuming at home in my underwear! Other times I feel a little bit more introspective, so it's Token Angels and a few of the more introspective slower songs.. so yeah, it just depends on the mood on the day.
You’ve had such a remarkable journey in music, what have been some of your career highlights?
Oh my goodness, I've been really grateful for the travel experiences. I've got to see a whole lot of the world that I may not have got to see had I not been in this position of work, and I'm sure I've met probably thousands more lovely people and heard their stories than I would have otherwise. Can you tell us a bit about your creative process and where you have drawn a lot of inspiration from for your music? Life and daily living is plenty of inspiration for me. Sometimes I even hear a little snippet of other people's conversations when I'm having a coffee or something and that'll trigger something in me, so there's plenty to draw on in life and love in general. I'm not a structured songwriter as such, I am at the mercy of inspiration. I have a little dictaphone and a pad of paper next to my bed for when I wake up at 3 o'clock in the morning and have had a dream or some sort of lyrical inspiration. I don't read or write music so it really helps me to sit down with a structured, educated musician and sing the chords
that I hear in my head for them to technically write them down. A lot of the time it's a collaborative effort for me. What do you love most about being on the road touring?
Oh my goodness I've been doing this for a long time. It's a bit of a love/hate relationship. The older I get the less I love leaving my acreage in the mountains and my dog, but I also feel that when I'm at home for let's say three or four weeks in a stretch, I tend to think ‘I need to get out there and do what I do’. It's my form of expression so it's important to me, and even if I'm not conscious of it, I feel the lack of it over the weeks when it's not happening. I very much appreciate the dichotomy of my life, they're very much opposites.
How do regional shows and smaller venues like this one compare to playing in major cities?
It's interesting. I did the Sydney Opera House a few weeks back and I was reminded that those larger audiences are a wonderful night, but you can't see into people's eyes; you can't directly communicate or connect, so these smaller gigs I find a lot of fun. We're all there for the same reason and it's just lovely when I can see into people's eyes and see their reactions to specific songs. That lifts me up. It's a communal thing.
What message do you have for fans who are excited to see you perform in March?
I don't get to play at home a lot. People think that we book our own shows but none of us artists are booking agents so it's a really nice thing when a local promoter gives you a call and says they'd like to offer you a few shows! I'm excited to play around my hometown because I don't get to do that often.
Thanks Wendy.
Rob Linton has had an impressive career in basketball as both a player and coach, and we are lucky to have him continuing to drive the game and its players to the next level with North Coast Basketball.
Hi Rob, you’ve had an incredible journey as both a professional basketball player and coach. What inspired you to start North Coast Basketball?
Throughout my basketball journey, I have had the opportunity to play in various locations, including Canada, Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide, and the Gold Coast. One of the key observations I made through my basketball journey is that young players in major metropolitan areas have access to basketball training and competition seven days a week, placing the regional players at a disadvantage. This consistent access and the high quality resources available provided metropolitan players with a distinct advantage compared to those in regional areas.
This realisation led me to establish North Coast Basketball with the goal of creating a similar high-quality environment for players in our region, one that allows them to access basketball training all year-round and elevate their skills to the next level.
My focus is not on coaching at a state or national level, but rather on nurturing and developing players from the North Coast, growing the game within our community, and ensuring that local players have the
opportunities and support to advance their basketball careers.
What motivated you to open the new high-performance basketball training centre in Woolgoolga?
Due to the lack of facilities and opportunities, basketball was never seen as a grass roots or popular sport in Woolgoolga. The recent addition of the new Wiigulga Sports Complex has provided the infrastructure to support the growth of basketball in Woolgoolga, however this space is shared with other sports and providers.
North Coast Basketball partnered with Bishop Druitt College to support their basketball and high-performance program. The college is located on the southern side of Coffs Harbour and its basketball facility serves as the primary venue for the majority of North Coast Basketball’s programs and competitions.
With an aim to expand access and foster growth in basketball on the northern side of Coffs Harbour, NCB will be working with Woolgoolga High School in 2025. This collaboration offers the opportunity for local students to engage with the sport and further develop their skills in an area where basketball has not previously been consistently available. What are the standout features of this new facility? What kind of training and development opportunities will the centre
offer?
North Coast Basketball has established a purpose-built basketball high-performance training facility in Woolgoolga that does not need to share the space with other sports. The facility is equipped with gym equipment adjacent to the training court, enabling us to offer strength and conditioning programs as an integrated training component for players. We have all the necessary equipment to support basketball-specific strength and fitness training, ensuring players can develop both on and off the court.
Additionally, we have an automatic shot return shooting machine designed to enhance shooting efficiency, enabling players to take up to 500 shots in just 30 minutes. The NCB centre offers programs tailored to all levels, ranging from beginners to intermediate and advanced players. Athletes are placed in training groups with others of similar skill and ability to ensure effective development. With the development of our own facility, North Coast Basketball has the flexibility to create innovative and engaging programs for the community. Starting in May 2025, we are launching programs for NDIS clients (All-Abilities Basketball) and pre-school aged players (Tiny Hoopers). These programs will introduce basketball-focused exercises designed to improve coordination and fine
motor skills from a young age.
Have you already seen success stories from North Coast Basketball, players who’ve taken the next step in their careers?
I am very proud of the success of the North Coast Basketball players both on and off the court. These fine young people demonstrate resilience, commitment to hard work and excel in a team environment.

centres along the North Coast, stretching from Tweed Heads to Port Macquarie. This expansion will not only increase access to basketball in rural/regional towns but also provide a dedicated space for our coaches to evaluate talent and place players into competitive teams, helping to form our own league.
Over the past five years, the North Coast has produced high quality players selected to play basketball in the USA under scholarships. Currently, there are 10 players from the North Coast competing at American colleges and high schools.
North Coast Basketball has played a pivotal role in helping players secure scholarships to private schools in Sydney, as well as assisting players and families in connecting with basketball clubs and coaches when relocating interstate. This support has been important in helping athletes transition to new environments while continuing to pursue their basketball careers.
Where do you see North Coast Basketball in the next five years?
The centre in Woolgoolga is our flagship and first of many centres. The vision for North Coast Basketball (NCB) is to establish multiple
This league will offer country athletes access to elite competition, whilst significantly reducing the requirement for extensive travel, allowing families to attend games without the need for overnight stays.
We have identified opportunities in the Ballina and South Coffs areas as the next locations for our centres and are in discussions with experienced coaches who are considering relocating to the North Coast to join NCB. These coaches are highly experienced basketball players, and former teammates of mine, bringing a wealth of experience and professionalism to our North Coast Basketball community.
What advice would you give to young athletes in regional areas who dream of playing basketball professionally?
Living in a regional area does not diminish your chances of playing high-level basketball; however, it requires a strong work ethic and self-motivation to continually push yourself
to improve. To reach a professional or college level, you must dedicate yourself to daily practice, ensuring the ball is in your hands consistently. This commitment often means making personal sacrifices, scheduling your time and prioritising your health and fitness, training and commitment to the team. The players who succeed and are offered opportunities are never lacking in attitude and effort. They bring their best every time they step onto the court. Achieving success in basketball means a willingness to rise early for training before school or work, pushing yourself physically and mentally to your limits, and remaining open to coaching and constructive criticism. If you are determined to build a career in this game, it requires consistent dedication and the drive to constantly improve.
How can aspiring players get involved with the new training centre?

For Mason and Brock Stubbs motorsport is part of their genetics, growing up in a family of racers starting with their grandfather. The boys are highly dedicated and passionate about racing, and at just 11 and 16 years old they’re already making a name for themselves!
Hi guys, can you share a bit about your backgrounds and how you first got into racing?
Motorsport is in our blood. We are the 3rd generation and have been inspired by the legends that came before us. Our grandfather is the man to thank for introducing motorsports into our family. Granddad was a motorsport enthusiast. One of his greatest treasures, a 1976 L34 Torana has its own spot in the Bathurst Motorsport Museum at Mount Panorama. Granddad’s love for motorsport naturally drifted into the lives of my father, uncle and cousins.
Our father spent 22 years racing from junior sedans through to AMCA Nationals and finished up in 700hp V8 Dirt Modifies. Our father was the drive for both Mason and I to be out there on the track. Our home ground is Grafton Speedway which is run by our Uncle and Aunty.
The passion our family has for motorsports has been handed down to us in generations and Mason and I are dedicated to carving out our own legacy.
Racing is a unique and high-adrenaline
sport, what do you love most about it?
The intensity and the sheer passion that goes into it. We thrive off the high level of excitement and adrenaline that comes with racing at high speeds, pushing ourselves to the limit and the strategy behind every move. Our passion for motorsports also extends beyond the track - sitting in the grandstand watching our fellow drivers race brings us a sense of thrill - driven by their desire to win, improve and prove themselves against the best.
speedway family is the best!
How does it feel to be making a name for yourselves in the sport at such a young age? What do you think has been the key to your success so far?
Proud, we can’t think of a better way to be known. Not only are we living our dreams, we are creating pathways and being positive role models for the next generations to come.
Motorsports keeps us accountable and takes up the majority of our free-time, no time to be running amuck or making poor choices.
Motorsports isn’t for everyone, mentally and emotionally. The risk factor is high and it’s extremely time consuming. We literally travel 1000’s of kms every year and lose track of the countless late nights we have before and after the race. But what we love most is seeing the hard work pay off, whether it’s a great pass or a podium finish.
The friendships we have made on our journey already have been unforgettable, our
Motorsports keeps us accountable and takes up the majority of our free-time, no time to be running amuck or making poor choices. Success doesn’t come overnight, it’s the perseverance and constant strive for excellence over time that leads to the recognition. We feel the key to our success so far has been a mix of relentless commitment, long days and nights working on both cars to make sure they’re race ready. The incredibly strong family support, the amazing sponsors that follow us on our journey and a true passion for the sport.
We focus on constantly learning - analysing races, refining techniques, and making sure we are physically and mentally prepared for the race, learning from our mistakes and celebrating wins.
Racing might seem like an individual sport, but behind every driver is a dedicated team, mechanics, family, sponsors and the race fans — all play a crucial role in success.
Having the right mindset has played a huge role in our journey, it is just as important as skill; resilience, adaptability, and never giving up.
What’s been the biggest lesson you’ve learned so far in racing?
One of the biggest lessons we’ve learned in racing is that success isn’t just about speed. It’s about patience, strategy, and resilience. There will always be setbacks, whether it’s a mechanical issue, a tough race, or a missed opportunity, but how you respond to those moments is what truly defines you. We’ve also learned the importance of teamwork. Racing might seem like an individual sport, but behind every driver is a dedicated team - mechanics, family, sponsors and the race fans, they all play a crucial role in success.
What’s a lesson that’s stood out to you in your journey so far?
Brock: “Don’t hit the infield tyres, you’ll come off 2nd best lol!”
Mason: Staying focused between each heat
and observing the changes in the track’s condition.
What has been your most memorable race so far?
Brock: “SSA Junior Sedan National Title at Grafton Speedway. I raced amongst 90 kids from all over Australia and came in 5th which was an unforgettable experience”
Mason: “Coming in on top in my second ever race”
How do you prepare mentally and physically before a big race?
A good night’s sleep the night before the race. The week leading up to the event is usually countless hours spent on the cars ensuring they are race ready.
Do you help each other improve, or is it all about competition between you?
Nothing like a good old family banter to keep the laughs rolling. Bragging rights are definitely a part of the dinner table tradition, but all that aside, it’s awesome when we both land on the podium at the end of the night’s racing.
Who are your biggest inspirations in the sport?
Our Dad. Having a father who is a motorsport role model was an incredible experience. We grew up travelling all over Australia in our
transporter watching our Dad compete at a high level. It was an inspiring environment for us growing up and we both knew at a young age whose footsteps we wanted to follow.
What are your goals for the future? Are we going to see the Stubbs brothers competing at the highest levels of racing? You’ll find us on the podium! Whether it’s at our home ground or at Australian titles, as long as it’s on a dirt track, that’s where our dedication is leading us.
Next year Brock will move out of the Junior league and head off to bigger and better things - watch this space.
Mason will do another year in junior racing and then would like to race V8 Dirt Modifieds.
Our goal for the future is to come in hot behind our cousins who race in America every year, in our off season.
We both would like to thank Dad and Mum; all our family and friends that travel all over Australia with us; our race fans that fill the stands and most of all our sponsors, we truly couldn’t get as far as we have without their support.

COFFS COAST BUSINESS OF THE YEAR
Ossie O manufactures and installs all outdoor screening products that will protect your outdoor area from sun, insects, weather and also for privacy. We had a chat with Sharon and Simon Shipman to find out more.
an you share the story behind Ossie O?
Ossie O has always been our dream as we have spent virtually all our working lives in the screening industry. In 2011 we took a leap of faith to manufacture external screens locally from a small factory in the Isles Industrial Estate. With us and 1 staff member the business was started with a focus on the rollaway system. The real game changer came with the development of the Zipslide product, an external blind system which is retractable and can cover large areas. This product was highly sought after, and this led to the growth in distributors across Australia selling the locally Coffs Coast
a double unit. The growth in the sales of this SHARON AND SIMON
made product. From a humble beginning, the last decade has seen the business grow to a level where we employ 23 people and have a strong local market and distribution network of over 65 distributors which is now spreading to Asian countries of Hong Kong and the Philippines in recent times.
What inspired you to focus on outdoor screens and zipslide as a product?
Outdoor screens are something we know and can do well. In the early days, the Rollaway system was basically the best option, although we always knew that a product that could span larger areas would be a winner.
product shows we are on the right track –pardon the pun!
How has your company evolved since it was established?
We initially had a small factory in Industrial Drive and around 2017 we relocated across the road to premises 10 times larger to allow for the anticipated growth of Zipslide.
In the early days, the Rollaway system was basically the best option, although we always knew that a product that could span larger areas would be a winner.
We now have a retail business selling our Rollaway and Zipslide products across the Mid North Coast and wholesale business where we make the products and transport them across Australia (and parts of the world).
Tell us about your team of experts.
We have a fantastic team which includes our administration, sales, factory and installation areas of the business. All are integra to the success of Ossie O. It is hard to single out any one employee, all of them do their day-today work in a professional manner.
What types of outdoor screens do you offer, and what are their key features? We offer two types of outdoor screen
solutions for our clients. The Rollaway system which offers crank control, spring control or motorised together with 2 choices of locking bottom rails, foot lock or flush lock. Rollaways are very versatile and offer the flexibility of being either up or down depending upon the weather conditions. The Zipslide system is fully framed for easy installation. The system has a unique adjustment of the recoil, the screen can be set on site for a perfect close. Both products are custom made to suit all jobs and all extrusions are powder coated to be long lasting.

What innovations have you introduced to enhance the user experience of your outdoor screens?
The unique adjustment of the recoil and removable cassette cover which allows easy access for cleaning and servicing are two of many innovations.
Simon is always looking at ways to improve the Zipslide product and a further improved innovation is just around the corner. Watch this space!
What trends are you seeing in outdoor entertainment or advertising that are influencing your product offerings?

Call us on 02 6651 5499, visit our website at ossieo.com.au or call in and see us at 11 Industrial Drive Coffs Harbour.
When all else fails, just Google “Screen it in a minute” and you will see the Ossie O webpage.
Thanks Guys, well done!
How do your outdoor screens stand out from competitors in terms of quality and design?
We know from the interest from our competitors over the past 5 years and the growth in our distribution network that our Zipslide product is market leading. We have the patent registered for this product across Australia and a few other countries across the world.
We find that our TV and radio ads with our “Screen it in a Minute” slogan has helped Ossie O to be well known across the Coffs Coast (and beyond). Clients are looking for improved ways to screen out the sun, rain, improve privacy and provide an outside living area.
How do you handle customer inquiries or issues regarding installation and maintenance?
We are always keen to ensure that all clients
Mahu Anderson and Sheridan Poulava began All Nesian Whanau, an Oceania Pacific cultural group to connect their children to the culture and traditions of their heritage, and it has since grown into a large community group meeting every fortnight at the Boambee East Community Centre.
Can you tell us how the Oceania Pacific Cultural Group first came together?
Sheridan: We are the original and only Oceania Cultural Group on the Mid North Coast. All Nesian Whanau (ANW) was conceptualised in 2020 and birthed from seeds sown long before our time, but ready to harvest for such a time as now.
My husband and I partnered with Mahu and Mark’s family and began cultural lessons on our outdoor balcony. Each family represents different Islands of the Pacific. When COVID hit and the mandate kept us home and our children in home chool, we switched to online lessons. For me, the location and popularity of our collaboration did not matter, except for the overwhelming compulsion to just start – even if small.
We organically expanded to 3 families who brought knowledge content from other regions of the Pacific. From these humble beginnings we formed a working group that shares leadership of ANW to this day.
Once COVID19 restrictions eased and eventually lifted, we became several families
who were suddenly performing in local parks, the funeral of a beloved kaumatua (Elder) and a conference for the Environmental Defenders Office representing their Pasifika Program.
Never could we imagine there was a diaspora on the Mid North Coast yearning to connect to culture. Word spread about a Maori and Pacific Island group in Coffs Harbour and I knew I had to activate a vision God placed within me and trust that he would work it all out for his good and his glory.
Presently, we are a community of approximately 40 Maori and Pacific Island families with more to come. We all share the same passion for culture and identity. Our children performed at the One Under the Sun Festival in Coffs Harbour 2024 and it was a beautiful union of parents and families coming together in service and love.
ANW is a movement beyond performance and entertainment – we are guardians of legacy following the footprints of those who walked in faith before us. We carry a responsibility to pass that legacy on to our next generation and to those with a sincerity of heart to learn, grow and serve.
What is the idea behind the group and
what do you hope community members get out of participating?
Sheridan: To provide a safe, nurturing and progressive space for:
• Advancing connection with our wider community.
• Enhancing community awareness of Pacific culture, heritage and socio-economic issues (i.e. health, education, society and climate change).
• Nurturing positive relationships within our diaspora as well as our wider community.
• Training up and sharing knowledge which emphasises traditional practices that are still relevant to our young people today. We structure our lessons through a variety of mediums such as song, dance, language, cooking and servitude.
What is your role with the group and what have you enjoyed about being a part of this cultural experience?
Mahu: One of my roles at All Nesian Whanau is being part of the group of parents who plan the content of our fortnightly meetings.
We try to ensure we bring the vibrant cultures of the Pacific Islands to life for our children through an exciting and inclusive program.
It is extremely rewarding to see the growth in the children, and as their confidence grows, we will prepare for public performances at cultural and food festivals, and at tertiary educational events. The children and parents will learn to make elements of their performance uniforms such as weaving flower garlands and lei, creating feather headdresses, and applying non-permanent Ta Moko (cultural tattoos).
Can you share a bit about what you do when you come together and how you aim to maintain connection to your culture?
Mahu: The ANW program combines traditional songs, dances, history, and cultural practices, creating an engaging and educational experience. By teaching our children Pacific culture and identity, our goal is to foster an understanding and appreciation of diverse cultures, in the hope that they become outstanding members and servants of their school and sporting communities, but also the greater Coffs Harbour community.
Over the past six months, children and parents have explored the traditions of the Maori, Tongan, and Samoan communities. This year, the journey expands to include Hawaii, the Cook Islands, Fiji, Niue, and Vanuatu.
Sheridan: A connection to their heritage through shared core values:
Aloha: Compassion, love, affection
Ha`aha`a: Humility, modesty
Pono: To know, feel, understand Kokua: To serve others in love
Kuleana: Privilege, responsibility
Karakia: Prayer and reflection
Laulima: Many hands work together
Lokahi: Unity, agreement
Mahalo: Gratitude
Malama: To nurture and protect
Ohana/Whanau/Fanau: Family
A sense of identity and belonging.
Courage to be outstanding members of their community.
Confidence to be proud of their heritage and to own their unique genetics.
A boldness to honour cultural protocol as children of the diaspora.
What sort of feedback have you had so far from those that attend?
Mahu: The feedback from both parents and children has been extremely positive. We hear comments about the sense of satisfaction and pride within the children every time we meet. The children seem happy they're in a safe and supportive environment to learn. They remain engaged while they have meaningful interactions with their peers. Parents are also delighted, often seen singing along to nostalgic songs from their childhood, adding a special touch to the experience. Feedback on the venue itself has been fantastic, and we feel it further enhances this positive atmosphere, fostering a strong sense of community and village-like feel Who is the group open to and how can
All Nesian Whanau meets every fortnight at the Boambee East Community Centre. You don't have to be a Pacific Islander to join. We are open to everyone who would like to try something new. Anyone of any ethnicity is welcome to join and participate. Do you have any plans for the group moving forward?
Sheridan: We certainly do! Our community is a workforce of love where parents, grandparents and caregivers volunteer their time and resources to support and link their children to culture. We offer a safe and nurturing space to share knowledge with all children and families who desire to learn, grow and serve.
Our hope is to honour our volunteers and hardworking families by weaving into our lesson plan a cultural experience to village homelands throughout Oceania and the Pacific where we can learn, grow and serve abroad.
In the meantime, we are building a lesson structure that brings the Islands of the Pacific to our families and exposes children of the diaspora to a simulated homeland experience. Where can we find out more or get in touch?

Cafe Aqua is a landmark local cafe and the home away from home for many locals and visitors to the Coffs Coast. We have created a relaxed environment and filled it with busy chatter, sumptuous smells from the kitchen and exceptional food and hospitality. We had a chat with owner Davina Hill to find out more.
Hi Davina, can you share with us your journey into the café business and what inspired you to open Café Aqua?
The journey has been fun, long and an adventure. Travelling and working all over different parts of Australia from restaurants, to fine dining and silver service in hotels, to making daily beer damper for tourists and my husband as a Pizza Chef, to running takeaway shops, selling fresh seafood and running local clubs and pubs. Taking time off in between to travel overseas and tasting all cuisine from around the world.
We had been living and working in Uluru, Northern Territory for years and when I fell pregnant we knew we wanted to relocate back to Coffs to start our family and be closer to my family.
Knowing we wanted to go back to something, and not to have to look for work we had been exploring many avenues and searching for the right business.
Our backgrounds have always been hospitality and tourism. When we found Cafe Aqua, and knowing my parents' friends successfully ran it prior to the owners at the time, we liked the idea, location and general feel of the cafe.
Over the years at Cafe Aqua we have come to learn our building / business was the first cafe in Coffs Harbour, starting in the early 60’s when it was called Maryanne’s Espresso Bar. We have the photos from her son who has visited us and we have also had a number of people come through town who worked there and shared their experience of what it used to look and feel like with us.
What is the core concept behind your café, and how do you convey this to your customers?
Over the years at Cafe Aqua we have come to learn our building / business was the first cafe in Co s Harbour, starting in the early 60’s when it was called Maryanne’s Espresso Bar.
Consistency, providing delicious food and good coffee whether it be a traditional breakfast or something more modern, we have a wide variety that we cater for.
The moment you enter Cafe Aqua we want you to feel welcome, in a relaxed environment and enjoy your experience. We greet our customers with a smile and their furry friends are welcome outside too.

Tell us about your team of expertise. We are so lucky to have a dedicated, reliable team who bring with them many years of experience, knowledge and creativity within the industry and share their enthusiasm and unique abilities with us at Cafe Aqua.
Can you describe your menu and what dishes or drinks you would consider your signature items?
Modern Australian Cuisine. We love to offer people the breakfast they’re craving, whether it be a simple bacon and eggs or honeycomb pancakes with fresh strawberries or a big breakfast with everything. Our favourites among customers are sautéed mushroom and chorizo with feta and spinach on local sourdough, and also our house-made corn fritters and chocolate hazelnut brownies. How do you source your ingredients, and why is this important to your café's identity?
We use trusted local suppliers who source the freshest ingredients for us, using local
produce where possible and we have always loved trying new things when brought to our attention or a new creation, new business which arises. We love to support local businesses. Suppliers who work behind the scenes are the ones who continue to keep our operation running smoothly, so thanks to all of them who happily offer us constant support.
How do you create a welcoming atmosphere that encourages customers to linger and enjoy their time here?
Being welcomed with a smile can brighten someone's day. Whether someone is just grabbing a coffee, meeting friends for a catch up or long lunch, or have an entire Oztag team getting together we try our best to be most accommodating and let them enjoy themselves, have a laugh or relax in peace. How does your café engage with the local community?
Being a local myself, growing up in Emerald and Sandy Beach, as well as many of our current and past team members growing up locally, we all engage with each other daily on a friendly, familiar basis. We are all like one big family, with lots of cousins, aunts, uncles, grandparents and friends visiting us numerous times a day. It’s such a lovely
community feel. We have witnessed many of our regular customers make new friends and join each other making tables of two and four increase to eight and ten.
We are all like one big family, with lots of cousins, aunts, uncles, grandparents and friends visiting us numerous times a day. It’s such a lovely community feel...
We also embrace the events held here in Coffs Harbour, welcoming Oztag a number of times per year, music events and past film festivals. We love seeing new faces through the cafe to get to know where they’re from, and also returning families who might be here a few times every year. As we’ve been running the cafe for 9 years now there’s always someone familiar who’s visited us before walking through our doors.
We also support local sporting clubs such as Coffs Harbour Kart Club and First Step Dance Academy, and our local schools which we, or our team are involved with.
What are your long-term goals for your café in the next few years?
We will see where the road takes us, you never knowe. We’ve been asked to open for nights for years, so it could be on the cards,
as well as continuing to offer our little Cafe Aqua breakfast, lunch & great coffee 7 days a week.
What advice would you give to aspiring café owners looking to start their own business?
Go for it take on the challenge, you’ll have fun doing it, don’t start too big, bring to the table your knowledge from any background and utilise it within your new business model.
How can customers best support local cafés like yours?
Shop small, shop local, be social, be a return customer, give face to face feedback, word of mouth, sharing your experience when you enjoy it and try new local places.

Milly Mainhardt is a proud Gunggari Woman living and CREATING CONTEMPORARY INDIGENOUS ARTWORKS ON GUMBAYNGGIRR LAND. SALTWATER FRESHWATER ARTS ALLIANCE has recently been hosting her works at The Gallery, featuring an emotive collection called Taking Back A Piece Of Time For Us.
Hi Milly, can you share a bit about your journey as an artist. When did you first start creating, and what inspired you to pursue art?
Yowalla! (Hello in Gunggari)
I am so excited to be featured in Focus Magazine, thanks to the support of Saltwater Freshwater Arts Alliance and The Gallery, who champion and showcase Aboriginal artists and makers from the Worimi, Biripi, Dunghutti, and Gumbaynggirr nations.
I first started painting when I was really young. I always loved drawing and painting a lot of landscapes and different creatures usually. Everything was always very colourful and bold. My parents always encouraged me to draw and create, make a lot of mess and express myself as loudly as possible, which I am so grateful for. It wasn’t until I moved away from my home in the city to the slow coastal town of Coffs Harbour that I really started to feel a pull to want to dive into my culture and start to explore that side of myself. Living so close to the ocean and being able to walk on Country
Living so close to the ocean and being able to walk on Country every day awoke something inside myself that I hadn’t really felt before which was exciting. Dot painting came very naturally to me.
every day awoke something inside myself that I hadn’t really felt before which was exciting. Dot painting came very naturally to me. We are so lucky here on the Mid North Coast, Indigenous Art and Culture really is all around us here and it’s incredibly inspiring.
I reached out to some of my family members to discover and educate myself more about my Mob. Learning about my culture, hearing stories and connecting with that part of myself is what really made me want to pursue being a Contemporary Aboriginal Artist.
As a proud Gunggari Woman living on Gumbaynggirr Land, how does your heritage influence your artwork?
My art is a way for me to express my cultural
identity, it helps me to reflect on the history of my people and has really forced me to look within myself and understand my spiritual beliefs. I feel it connects me to the land and it helps me to pass on stories in a way that I know my daughter will be able to see and appreciate when she’s older.
Your art is described as vibrant and full of detail, how would you define your unique artistic style?
My artistic style is very loud (a lot like my personality as my husband would say haha) it’s bright, bold and colourful. I try to make the viewer stop and really get a good look at my works. I prefer to dot, I feel I'm most comfortable when I'm dotting but I do like to push myself and add symbols, lines and animals to some of my pieces to really tell a story or get a message across.
Continued over...
You have recently had an exhibition of your works at The Gallery; Freshwater Saltwater Arts Alliance, can you tell us about this particular collection and its special meaning for you?
I wanted this collection to really highlight the Stolen Generation and the impact that it’s had on my people. It was a horrific time in Aboriginal history between 1910 and the 1970’s, governments, churches and welfare bodies forcibly removed many Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children from their families.
The forcible removal of First Nations children was based on assimilation policies, which claimed that the lives of the children would be improved if they became part of white society. Assimilation policies proposed that Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander Peoples should be allowed to ‘die out’ through a process of natural elimination or if possible, assimilated into white society.
These oil paintings would usually depict your

typical Australian landscapes (farm houses, stock men riding horseback, white children playing cricket in the streets, beaches or paperbark tree lined landscapes), by dotting the backgrounds or over the trees with vibrant dots, colourful lines and detailed animals it reminds the viewer that these scenes may look harmless and beautiful but underneath there is a dark and horrific past that was being hidden or pushed away from view. The meaning behind each piece is to stand up for my culture, show strength and take back a time that is hard for a lot of Aboriginal people to think of.
playing cricket happily out the front of their home with their mother and father.
I’d seen paintings like this before and every single time I saw one it made me feel angry inside. Knowing that a lot of these types of oil paintings were created around the time of the Stolen Generation, none of them ever depicted Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander People or anything to do with my culture. I purchased the painting, brought it home and started to dot the sky behind it. I didn't want to completely cover the painting but in my mind I was correcting the piece by stamping my culture over the top.
What inspired the idea for the Taking Back A Piece Of Time For Us Collection?
It truly came to me one day when I was standing in an op shop looking at an oil painting. The piece was of some white children
What is your creative process like when painting? Do you plan your works in advance, or do they evolve as you paint? If I'm painting a commission piece for someone I’ll meet with them and discuss what kind of story they’d like the piece to tell, choose
colours and sizing together and then I'll go home and create. But usually I'll start by laying a base coat colour down and let the piece evolve as I go tweaking and changing things as the piece comes together. I paint on my kitchen bench at home, I always have music playing and usually a toddler running around at my feet, haha, but I’ll grab any chance I get while she’s napping or playing to create. I love that she can see me painting, I hope it encourages her to want to be creative when she’s bigger and love her culture.
How do you balance traditional Indigenous storytelling with contemporary artistic ideas and techniques?
I’ve always loved listening to, or reading Dreamtime Stories (The Rainbow Serpent, Tiddalick the Frog, How the Kangaroo Got Its Pouch etc) and interpreting them how my mind sees them. I’ve never been formally taught how to paint in a traditional Indigenous style so painting a contemporary style feels right for me and how I like to create with bold and vibrant colours. Weaving the stories throughout some of my works or telling my own stories is a way to blend both tradition and contemporary together.
What message or emotions do you hope people take away when they view your art?
I want the viewer to feel anger that this
strength after looking at my work and feel courage to make change and stand up against injustice if you see it.
Where can we see more of your work or get in touch?
My works are currently on display at The Gallery; Freshwater Saltwater Arts Alliance in town. I have my exhibition and a few larger canvas pieces hanging on display.
happened and happened for so long; to feel pride that Indigenous people fought through such dark times and are still here to tell their stories; to feel empowered to make changes and educate themselves on the true histories of our country and to feel excited to move forward and embrace First Nations cultures in their daily life. Temperate has quickly made a name for themselves in the local music scene here in Co s, packing out shows and earning acclaim for their infectious, energetic stage presence. ey are about to embark on an East Coast tour, bringing their modern rock sounds to more audiences. We spoke to guitarist Sco about where they came from and what they have in store for us next.
i Scott. Temperate is bringing a fresh energy to Aussie rock, how did the band come together, and what inspired the name?
Temperate formed in high school music class, where we first connected over a shared passion for rock. Our relentless jams carried over from the classroom to the jam shed, shaping our sound and energy.
The joy for live shows was quickly discovered after a few local gigs, now we're thrilled to set off and tour the East Coast of Australia and beyond. The name Temperate reflects both
balance and intensity within our music.
Like the shifting dynamics of the weather, our sound moves from controlled melodic moments to full throttle rock energy. It nods to our roots of the Coffs Coast, where the climate is temperate.
Temperate is our approach to rock ‘n roll, the balance of compassionate love and fierce energy.
How would you describe your sound to someone who’s never heard you before?
Our sound is high energy rock with a modern edge. Influenced by classic Aussie rock, our sound is nostalgic but refreshed with a new twist. The punch of powerful guitars and compelling female vocals will have you singing along and head banging
from the first note.
Whether it’s a driving riff that gets your adrenaline pumping or a soaring chorus that sticks with you long after the song ends, we aim to deliver an experience that’s powerful, passionate, and undeniably fun. At the heart of it all, Temperate is about bringing people together through music. When you hear us, if it’s in the pit at a live show or blasting through your speakers, we want you to feel energised
What bands or artists have had the biggest impact on your style and songwriting?
Our influences are spread across genres, with each member bringing their
own element to the writing process, but mutual inspirations have been; Wolfmother, Foo Fighters, Led Zeppelin, Motley Crue and Incubus.
Taylor, (vocals) originally an acoustic solo artist, now leads the stage delivering her belter voice.
Levi, (drums) hits hard! Setting the driving rhythm section. Dreams of a rolling cage like Tommy Lee.
Ethan, (bassist) loves the punk rock era, embedding syncopated rhythms with rich grooves similar of Mike Dirnt. Fin, (guitar) always on point, embodied from heavy metal influences such as Jim Root.
Scott, (guitar) rampant in uncontrollable dance whilst shredding, reminiscent of Angus Young.
You’ve been making waves in the local music scene, packing out hometown shows, what’s been your most memorable gig so far?
While touring across the East Coast, we have played to so many new faces and each show is so memorable and special. Our favourite gig would be the Coffs Harbour ‘Summer Salt Festival’ supporting ‘Tones and I’. Having access to such a large stage allowed us to move freely and truly display our wild stage presence. How would you describe the atmosphere at a Temperate live show? What can fans expect when they see you perform? Temperate’s live show is a high energy performance. Our ecstatic stage presence is captivating and contagious. Our crowd interaction gets everyone involved, from singing powerful anthems to clapping along with our tunes. We
love connecting with the audience as every show turns into an unforgettable experience for both fans and us. It's like an energy exchange between us all. The thunderous rhythm section will shake the floor beneath you, forcing everyone to dance and get amongst the exciting new revolution in Australian music.
Supporting acts like Tones And I, Pacific Avenue, Surf Trash, and The Moving Stills is a huge achievement. What have you learned from playing alongside these bands?
The Australian music scene is so alive and exciting right now, with so many incredible new acts emerging. We love being part of a community of artists who share the same passion for music.
We're so thankful for the opportunity to have supported these amazing acts. Every time we play live we learn something new. Playing alongside these experienced bands has given us valuable insight into the industry, whether it’s refining our live performance, improving our stage presence or the insight of touring bands. The Australian music scene is so alive and exciting right now, with so many incredible new acts emerging. We love being part of a community of artists who share the same passion for music. These support slots have opened even more doors for us, leading to new collaborations, and the chance to bring our music to new fans. Super keen to announce we are supporting ‘Rose Tattoo’ and these heavyweight acts have prepared us for this awesome opportunity. Take us behind the scenes. What’s your songwriting process like, do you write as a band or does each member bring in their own ideas?
Most of the songs on our EP were written instrumentally in high school. We have advanced so far in our songwriting abilities and bounce off each other during jam sessions. Our songs often
begin with a riff. Organically everyone will contribute their interpretation, which develops the song's layers. Every jam we'll come up with something new and when the first smile breaks it's hard to remember what happens from there, we're just lost in the moment of creativity each member brings.
Since recording our EP in a studio environment, in which each layer is broken down, we have all become more familiar with our instruments and how to project and blend with one another. We're so excited to share new music because it's still new to us.
What’s on the horizon for the band?
More touring, new music, or any big projects coming up?
We're already booked to head back into the studio. With an album's worth of material, we're so stoked to share the next era of our sound development. We're always keen to play live, so we'll be announcing a run of shows very soon. If you're looking for your next live music fix, or checking us out for the first time we'll be rocking out at the Hoey Moey 19th April.
Where can we find your music, and keep track of upcoming gigs?

Hope to catch you soon at our next upcoming Coffs Harbour show at the Hoey Moey April 19th. Co s Latin Rhythms, referred to as CLR, brings a high standard of both Australian and international Latin dancers to Co s Harbour as guest instructors. e visiting Latin dance teachers enrich the dance community with variety while raising individual ability and technical knowledge. brings a high standard
heir classes and workshop structure offers participants at all levels the opportunity to get personal tuition in many styles at an affordable cost. Amazingly, it's right on our doorstep. The dance community of Coffs is blessed with a number of highly trained and qualified dance teachers which CLR engages for its weekly classes which range from beginners to intermediate and improver levels.
Can you tell us about the origins of Coffs Latin Rhythms and how it was formed?
CLR started back in 2009 by a group of local dance enthusiasts, and has been growing in popularity ever since. It is run by a volunteer committee of Latin dancers and teachers who support the family of over 400 Latin dancers throughout our region.
What inspired you to focus on Latin dance as a genre?
Latin music has been one of the biggest and most popular genres on the planet. It is a diverse genre that encompasses different styles and rhythms of music that originate from Latin America, Spain and Portugal.
What specific styles of Latin dance do you perform, and how do these styles influence your choreography?
Currently we offer Cuban Salsa, Bachata and Tango classes for all levels. We also offer workshops in Zouk, Kizomba, East Coast Swing and Rock and Roll where we bring in our visiting dance teachers.
How do you incorporate cultural elements into your performances?
Our dance styles come from all over the world. For example, we have Cuban Salsa, Dominican Bachata, Argentinian Tango. We have many Latin American dance styles and we embrace them all in our classes and workshops.
offer?
2025 Classes @ the Coast Hotel, commencing start of school terms.
What type of training do members undergo to master Latin dance?
Dance provides the dancers and teachers the opportunity with social and cultural interaction, an opportunity to connect with each other and build a sense of community and wellbeing.
It also involves a mix of genders and styles which keeps it fresh and interesting. What is awesome about Latin dancing is that it is highly social, provides for a great physical workout and keeps one mentally sharp. You can come as a couple or as an individual, it doesn’t matter, as you get the opportunity to dance with many different partners – that is part of the learning and the fun.
How has your group evolved since its inception?
The longevity success of the organisation is its community led focus and the fact that it is a not-for-profit organisation completely run by volunteers – driven by their passion for dancing.
One never masters Latin dancing; it is a spiral of continuous improvement and moves. However, within the first 12 months of dancing with CLR, one will normally feel confident to dance with anyone, anywhere.
How often do you practice, and what does a typical rehearsal session look like?
We have three weekly classes for Salsa, Bachata, Tango and Rueda. We also hold monthly socials, a winter ball and Xmas party, and 3-4 workshops a year with visiting international renowned teachers.
How does your group engage with the local community through dance?
Dance provides the dancers and teachers the opportunity with social and cultural interaction, an opportunity to connect with each other and build a sense of community and wellbeing. Everyone is welcome at our dance classes. Our club is a cultural hot pot of lifelong friendships that are formed through the love of dancing. Are there any programs or workshops you

What advice would you give to someone considering joining a dance group or starting their journey in Latin dance?
Just do it! “It saved me when I was going through my divorce, I didn’t want to be at home by myself, miserable on the couch, so I took myself off to a dance class and ended up dancing 4 times a week! I was meeting people, getting exercise and switching my busy brain off all at the same time – I loved it and I have never looked back”.

Deli Frost is a talented local artist and small business owner known for creating live sketches at various events. She’s a popular choice for weddings, celebrations, and special occasions. In addition to her live sketching, Deli is an accomplished artist who also sells her original artwork. We were curious to learn more about her work.

What draws you to live sketching at events?
Live wedding sketching combines my passion for art with my social side. To be a part of people’s most special day/event is truly an honour. Does the idea of creating art in a fastpaced, emotional setting excite you, or is it more about the meaningful connections with clients?
It does, at first this was the part I liked least about the job. I found myself riddled with anxiety and self doubt prior to a wedding but as I kept experiencing them and being proud of myself, my confidence grew and now I get so excited to go and see how the event comes together and meet new people. How do you prepare for a live sketching session?
There is so much that goes into live
sketching. There is the initial quoting and emailing back and forth with the couple, then planning the travel and accommodation and making sure your kit is packed and ready. I have also always tried to dress up and look the part of a wedding guest as I believe it adds a premium vibe to the day.
What’s the most challenging part of live sketching?
Doing up to 100 guests in a night. Sometimes you feel like you’re flying and your brain and hands are creating in such a fast way it’s even surprising to me. Then other days it feels like due to a few different things I am not going as fast as I like, which makes the night a little stressful
until I speed up.
Can you walk me through a memorable or interesting experience you’ve had while live sketching?
Sometimes you feel like you’re flying and your brain and hands are creating in such a fast way it’s even surprising to me. en other days it feels like due to a few di erent things I am not going as fast as I like.
Last year in August I travelled to Las Vegas and worked at 6 weddings in the iconic Elvis inspired chapels. Just witnessing the different kinds of weddings compared to the style of Australia was so eye opening and fun. Each wedding went for 9 minutes so I had to draw quicker than normal!
What tools or materials do you rely on for live sketching?
My must have for the wedding is my Copic marker range, they are incredibly
long lasting and are actually used in proper professional textiles and fashion sketches for big magazines and clothing companies! Have you noticed a difference in the way you approach live sketching compared to studio work? The difference between studio work and live sketching is that studio work feels like small artistic tasks that are relaxing but sometimes stressful from home. Live sketching is more like a musician’s gig, there is always travel, set up and then the show starts. You’re on for hours and then the job is done. What kind of feedback or interaction do you get from event attendees?
I’ve had everything from crying and amazement to laughing and thanking me for making them look like supermodels. It’s always a highlight of the wedding and guests love to take photos and share their

personalised artworks on socials and around their house.
How do you deal with interruptions or distractions while working live?
I am pretty great at zoning out and just focussing on what is in front of me. There is always a time pressure so I don’t have alot of time to chat to many guests, however that’s what my assistant is for! They’ll answer all your questions and make sure you’re not waiting too long for your portrait. What’s your favourite type of event to sketch at, and why?
Weddings! I’m a sucker for a love story and no one is ever in a bad mood at a wedding!
Do you have any exciting weddings coming up?
I do! I have the biggest two years I’ve ever had coming up, with weddings all over Australia including Margaret River WA and the Blue Mountains. But even more exciting, I am heading to Europe twice in the next two years with weddings booked in LAKE COMO, TUSCANY and Mallorca!! Such a pinch me moment.

Vanessa Simpson is the founder of sheHarmony, which o ers retreats and travel experiences for women who want to reconnect with themselves, and a sisterhood of other women who know what they’re going through, a er experiencing divorce or the loss of a partner.
Hi Vanessa, sheHarmony was born from your personal experiences with divorce and healing. Can you share how your journey led to the creation of this community?
I know firsthand the deep pain, loss, and uncertainty that comes with divorce. Losing a partner can feel similar. For a long time, my independence kept me from seeking support, and I suffered alone longer than necessary. But eventually, I discovered the power of female connection, and it was transformative. That sense of sisterhood changed everything. I ddn’t want other women to go through what I did - feeling isolated and lost. That’s why I created sheHarmony - to provide a space where women who have experienced divorce, relationship breakdown, or loss can find strength, community, and friendship. Through
expert-led retreats and group travel experiences, we create meaningful spaces where women can heal, grow, and thrive. sheHarmony is about connection, support, and empowerment; why are these elements so crucial for women navigating loss or major life transitions?
Connection reminds us we’re not alone. Support provides encouragement when self-doubt creeps in. Empowerment is about rebuilding confidence and embracing the next chapter with strength and optimism.
These experiences can feel incredibly isolating. Divorce, the loss of a partner, or major upheaval can shake a woman’s sense of identity and stability. Connection reminds us we’re not alone. Support provides encouragement when self-doubt creeps in.
Empowerment is about rebuilding confidence and embracing the next chapter with strength and optimism. At sheHarmony, we create spaces where women can find all three - where they can lean on each other, receive expert guidance, and step into a future filled with possibility. When women come together in a safe, uplifting environment, something magical happens.
Can you walk us through a typical sheHarmony retreat or travel experience? What can women expect?
Whilst we are in the early stages of our travel marketplace, sheHarmony retreats
are more than just getaways - they’re journeys of healing and self-discovery. From the moment women arrive, they step into a welcoming space where they can reconnect with themselves and embrace new possibilities. Whether at a coastal hideaway, a tranquil rainforest retreat, or an inspiring overseas destination, each experience is thoughtfully curated. Mornings may begin with yoga, meditation, or a beach walk, followed by nourishing meals. Expert-led workshops help women navigate transitions and rebuild confidence. But it’s not all serious, we also prioritise joy! Women may explore local culture, enjoy spa treatments, or try activities like surfing or cooking classes. By the end, they leave with renewed strength and deep friendships.
of participants?
At sheHarmony, we call our participants ‘sheJourneyers’ - women on a transformative path of healing and growth. Supporting them are our ‘Harmonizers’ - mentors and experts from diverse backgrounds in wellness, coaching, psychology, and personal development. Whether leading mindfulness sessions, facilitating discussions, or offering a listening ear, our Harmonizers create a safe space for women to reconnect with themselves and find strength in community. Their presence transforms each retreat into a powerful journey of empowerment and connection. For women hesitant to join a sheHarmony retreat or travel experience, what would you say to encourage them?
e power of female connection is immense. Surround yourself with women who understand your journey. In that sisterhood, you’ll find support, healing, and strength.
It’s natural to feel hesitant about stepping into something new. But healing, growth, and joy begin when you say ‘yes’ to yourself. A sheHarmony retreat isn’t just about taking a trip, it’s about stepping into a supportive space where you can reconnect with yourself, find friendship, and rediscover your strength. Many women may arrive feeling nervous or unsure but will leave feeling lighter and deeply connected. You deserve this time for yourself, and we’re here to welcome you.
What is your ultimate vision for sheHarmony? How do you hope it will evolve?
a new chapter, sheHarmony will support and empower them.
Do you have any upcoming retreats or exciting new offerings?
Yes! We’re excited to announce two upcoming experiences. One of our Harmonizer’s is hosting a retreat in Bali, designed to help women heal and embrace new possibilities. We’re also offering a unique travel experience on the Eastern Shore of Maryland USA, a wholesome, welcoming region perfect for women seeking peace, connection, and a sense of community. With quaint waterfront towns, rich history, outlet shopping, and a slower pace of life, it’s an ideal setting for women to unwind and bond with others who truly understand their journey.
How can women get involved with sheHarmony, whether as participants or supporters?
For women ready to begin their healing journey, the best way to get involved is by joining one of our upcoming retreats via our website, www.sheHarmony.net. You can also engage with us on social media, where we share insights and inspiration. If you’re passionate about sheHarmony’s mission, you can support by attending events, sharing our offerings, or partnering with us. Women with a background in coaching, wellness, therapy, or transformation are encouraged to reach out about becoming a Harmonizer. Whether you’re a sheJourneyer or a supporter, there’s a place for you in our community.
If you could give one piece of advice to a woman struggling with loneliness or loss, what would it be?
Who are the “Harmonizers,” and how do they contribute to the healing and growth
My vision is for sheHarmony to become the go-to global marketplace for women seeking healing retreats, and to be the trusted partner for divorce coaches, wellness experts, therapists, and transformation specialists who want to create powerful in-person experiences but lack the time or expertise to plan them. Our goal is to offer more than just retreatswe want to be a catalyst for lasting change. Whether healing from loss, rediscovering themselves after a breakup, or stepping into
I know how it feels to be lost and overwhelmed. I once thought I had to handle everything alone, but I’ve learned you don’t have to. The power of female connection is immense. Surround yourself with women who understand your journey. In that sisterhood, you’ll find support, healing, and strength. Don’t be afraid to lean on others. You deserve to feel connected and empowered as you move forward, and with the right support, things will get better.
Thanks Vanessa.

This November marks a special milestone when the service will celebrate its 30th anniversary. In honour of this extraordinary achievement, Renae and her team are excited to announce a year-long initiative to spread kindness and give back to the community that has supported them for so long. To celebrate the 30 years of service, the service will commit to completing 30 acts of kindness. These community projects will include everything from supporting local charities, helping families in need, to environmental sustainability initiatives.

Can you share your career journey and the pivotal moments that led you to your current role? My career has always been a blend of creativity, strategy, and design. I spent 20 years in marketing, running a creative agency, and four years in interior design across commercial and residential projects. After the turbulence of COVID, I sought a new challenge, something that truly aligned with my passions. When I asked family and friends for advice, their response was unanimous: “real estate”. It made perfect sense, combining my love for people, marketing, and property design into one career. Taking the leap into real estate sales felt like coming home in some ways – I truly love it.
How have your experiences shaped your approach to business today? Integrity, honesty, and a client-first mindset have always been my starting points. I strive to see situations from my client’s perspective, ensuring they feel heard, understood, and supported. This approach has helped me build long-lasting relationships and achieve success.
Challenges will always arise, but I view them as opportunities for growth. Every experience, positive or difficult, has reinforced my commitment to continuous learning and doing the right thing by people.
properties - I help people move forward in their lives. That’s why I go beyond the transaction, ensuring every home is presented at its absolute best and every client feels fully supported. Genuine care, clear communication, and dedication are my promises. Selling or purchasing a home is one of the biggest financial and emotional decisions a person can make, and I take that responsibility seriously and as a privilege.

Can you share your career journey and the pivotal moments that led you to your current role?
My journey in property began at 18 as a trainee sales agent. While I enjoyed the industry, sales wasn’t the right fit for me. I later found my passion for conveyancing as a legal assistant at a local law firm. Helping clients navigate major financial decisions was rewarding, and I pursued my conveyancing licence through Macquarie University.
In 2015, I launched One Step Conveyancing with a focus on providing exceptional service and community support. Now, a decade later, we celebrate our 10year anniversary, having built a business known for professionalism, reliability, and client care. I’m proud to have a strong team, including Quinn Carniato, who has been with me for nearly nine years, and Magenta Bailey, who has been part of One Step for eight years. Their dedication has been instrumental in our success.

Running a business for 10 years has taught me the importance of resilience and teamwork. Surrounding myself with a committed team has been crucial, and I’m grateful for the trust our clients place in us.

What accomplishment are you most proud of in your career so far?
What started as a modest venture, purchasing a property to self-manage, then managing a second and third property, has grown into a company overseeing more than 100 listings. Reflecting on this journey, I often find myself in moments of sheer disbelief, amazed by what we have built. However, what I am most proud of isn’t just the scale of the business, but the incredible team of strong, intelligent women I have the privilege of working alongside every day. Their dedication, passion, and talent continue to inspire me, and I am immensely proud of the supportive and empowering workplace we’ve created together.
What legacy do you hope to leave within your industry or community?
My goal is to leave a lasting impact by raising the standard of accommodation available and ensuring our region is recognised as a premier tourist destination. Beyond this, I’m passionate about supporting the local economy by collaborating with local businesses and providing employment opportunities for
locals, ensuring that money stays within the community.
Our business ethos is deeply rooted in sustainability and social responsibility. We prioritise eco-friendly and ethically sourced products across our properties. AANUKA BEACH HOUSE HEAD OF SALES AND EVENTS
Ihave been in the tourism and hospitality industry for over 20 years, starting out with the Marriott Hotel Group in London. As a member of the management team in a world class hotel group, I was fortunate to be surrounded by leaders who were passionate hospitality professionals. Working for a worldwide organisation with amazing training programs, procedures and systems shaped my view of the hospitality industry.
After returning to the East Coast, I was fortunate to work for boutique 5 star properties in Byron Bay. In the past decade, I have worked for the major resorts on the Coffs Coast in sales and marketing, business development and have recently joined the management team at Aanuka Beach House as the Head of Sales and Events.
What sets your business apart from competitors in your industry? Aanuka Beach House has reinvigorated the Coffs Coast events space offering, with the most amazing unique beachfront venues for business events, conferences, weddings and celebrations. We work closely with our industry peers to collaborate and promote the Coffs Coast as a destination for events and tourism.
What are your long-term goals for your business over the next few years? I am looking forward to Aanuka Beach House attracting more events and visitation to the Coffs Coast, with the renewed interest and excitement surrounding the property after our recent upgrades. Our new owners Tilley and Wills, have created an experience at Aanuka Beach House that is hard to find anywhere else in the region.
How can we get in touch? I can be contacted by email, phone or in person at Aanuka Beach House and would love to connect with new and old clients from the region! tanyaw@aanukabeachhouse.com.au or functions@aanukabeachhouse.com.au
AANUKA BEACH HOUSE GENERAL MANAGER
Istarted at Verandah Bar in 2018 and quickly rose through the ranks from bartender to supervisor to manager. After 3 years I became General Manager and won The AHA Industry Rising Star both in NSW and nationally. I then moved to Coffs Harbour to spearhead the renovation and reopening of Aanuka Beach House.
Who have been your biggest mentors or influences in your career? I have been blessed with so many in different departments. Katie Murphy has taught me customer service and fine dining. Jason Hirt has taught me that the key to success is the culture of the staff and customer. Brad Sloane has taught me the inner workings of food and menu writing. My biggest mentor is David Thompson, he is always teaching me about how to be the best leader and become someone people want to follow, not because of skill, but because they care about the people they are leading.
What sets your business apart from competitors in your industry? We have a very simple approach - we ask ourselves “Is that average or awesome?” and if it’s not awesome we don’t do it. What do you believe is the biggest challenge facing women in your sector currently? Hospitality has always been an ‘old boys club’ and we don’t have a lot of accessible strong female role models in the industry. I think women can easily be deterred from progression when looking at a management structure that is mostly men. I pride myself on running very female heavy teams, almost my entire team at Verandah from my restaurant manager, functions manager, gaming manager, HR manager and my entire duty management team were strong professional women.

Sara H: Mentorship taught me that true leadership fosters trust, autonomy, and confidence in others. Empowerment in education means creating a community where students, staff, and families feel valued and inspired to grow.
What advice would you give to the next generation of female leaders and entrepreneurs?
Find what you’re good at, and passion will follow. Embrace opportunities, learn from mistakes, and trust the process. If you have a great mentor, listen to them!
Sharlene K: At Clarence Valley Anglican School (CVAS), we nurture the whole student, academically, socially, and emotionally. Our engaging curriculum, small class sizes, and dedicated educators foster curiosity and resilience. Through strong pastoral care, inclusivity, and leadership opportunities, we empower students to thrive and succeed. What do you believe is the biggest challenge facing women in your sector currently?
Natalie D: Skilled educators often leave teaching for professional validation. Society
Marie L: Find what you’re good at, and passion will follow. Embrace opportunities, learn from mistakes, and trust the process. If you have a great mentor, listen to them!
What accomplishment are you most proud of in your career so far?
Nicole H: I am most proud of a 2024 collaborative project with Clarence Valley Anglican School and Emmanuel Anglican College. It is a creative response to the genocide in Gaza, emphasizing the dignity and value of human life, particularly that of children. Inspired by Palestinian filmmaker Rolla Selback’s poem, Tell them We did not Live Silent, the project highlights the resilience and joy of children.
Shelley H: As Junior Primary Coordinator at Clarence Valley Anglican School’s Cathedral Campus, I have led initiatives like Investigations, creating a dedicated space for play-based learning that enhances student engagement. This approach fosters cognitive, social, and emotional development
while reinforcing foundational literacy and mathematical concepts through hands-on experiences. Beyond academics, Investigations cultivates essential skills like communication, collaboration, and critical thinking, preparing students for lifelong success.
How do you stay inspired and motivated in a constantly changing business landscape?
Sara H: I stay motivated by focusing on our impact on the next generation and embracing professional growth. Collaboration, development, and strong relationships provide fresh inspiration. Small victories, student progress, teacher success, and family gratitude all reinforce my passion for education.
What message would you like to convey to aspiring female entrepreneurs who are just starting out?
Natalie D: As a secondary teacher, I work with the next generation of entrepreneurial women. To them, I say this: women hold just 17% of patents worldwide - a gap that has persisted for over a century, but it doesn’t have to. With the rise of social media, women are increasingly stepping into entrepreneurship, proving that innovation flourishes when opportunity meets empowerment. How can we get in touch?

In 2025, what are the most significant trends you see impacting your industry?
One of the biggest trends shaping our industry is the rise of AI and automation tools. These technologies are streamlining operations, reducing manual workload, and allowing businesses to focus more on strategy and customer experience. The ability to automate repetitive tasks means teams can work smarter, not harder, ultimately driving efficiency and innovation.
How has technology changed the way you operate your business or connect with customers? Technology evolves rapidly, and we embrace change to stay ahead while supporting clients at their own pace. Some adapt quickly, while others need more time, so we ensure a smooth transition. Digital tools also enhance our efficiency, providing faster service, personalised experiences, and seamless interactions.
insights that strengthen our approach. By leveraging these unique strengths, we create a well-rounded and dynamic team.
In today’s fast-paced world, how do you maintain a healthy work-life balance (or integration)? Work-life balance isn’t about perfection, it’s about making it work in a way that suits our lives. We prioritise small but meaningful habits, like organising our homes on weekends to start the week fresh or committing to regular exercise, whether it’s hitting the gym before or after work. Some weeks are more balanced than others, but the goal is always to make time for what matters.

How do you set boundaries between your professional and personal life? We prevent burnout by setting clear expectations, such as limiting work emails outside office hours, making time for family, and knowing when to switch off. Balance is a constant work in progress but being intentional about when to work and recharge makes all the difference.
What makes Holly Brows stand out from others in the cosmetic tattooing industry?
When it comes to cosmetic tattooing, it’s all about experience and genuine passion. I’ve been in the beauty industry for over 20 years, and this month marks 10 years of Business and perfecting my craft in cosmetic tattooing. Over the years, I’ve honed my skills and gained so much knowledge, which I bring to each and every treatment I do.
But what truly sets Holly Brows apart is my deep commitment to delivering the best possible results for my clients. I take the time to really understand your unique features, preferences, and goals. Every face is different, and I want to make sure your enhancements look as natural and flattering as possible. It’s about helping you feel more confident in your skin. Ultimately, I love building strong, trusting relationships with my clients. It’s that mix of experience, passion, and the personal touch that really makes Holly Brows special.
What are you most proud of in your career so far?
Oh, there are a few moments that have really stood out! The daily transformations I see in my clients, where they leave feeling more confident and self-assured, are always so rewarding. That’s what I love about what I do – seeing those little changes that make a big difference.
A huge milestone in my career has been launching my own line of brow makeup products. It was a true labour of love! I developed a clear brow mascara and four tinted versions – all designed to help clients enhance and maintain their look long after leaving the salon. The whole idea was to create something that was longlasting, smudge-proof, and super easy to apply, without feeling heavy or unnatural. It was an exciting moment in my career, and I’m so proud of how it’s all come together.

What are your long-term goals for your business over the next few years? One of my long-term goals over the next few years includes expanding the wedding side of my business. This has become one of my greatest and most popular business passions. I’d love to expand myself as a stylist for brides looking for exceptional hair and makeup artistry on their big day and take pride in my reputation for creating timeless, beautiful looks. In addition to that, I’m excited to collaborate with other wedding vendors, hair and makeup artists and colourists alike in the industry to offer a seamless experience for all clientele, no matter the service.
Can you share your career journey and the pivotal moments that led you to your current role? I started my hair and makeup journey in 2016 in a casual job at my local salon. After graduating year 12 in 2018, I got straight into my apprenticeship and qualified as a senior stylist in 2021. From here I dedicated my time to learning the finer arts of my trade and I went on to specialise in both avenues of colouring and weddings and now, 9 years after my journey first began, my dream of owning my own space to create and work in has become a reality. What accomplishment are you most proud of in your career so far? Opening my own salon space has been the most rewarding experience and I’m so grateful for every person who has chosen to support me!
How do you stay inspired and motivated in a constantly changing business landscape? I believe investing in ongoing education and training is such an important part of inspiration and motivation in order to stay current in the industry as styles and trends are forever changing.

In 2025, what are the most significant trends you see impacting your industry?
In 2025, AI is definitely going to be a huge game-changer in my industry, but I think the real impact will come from how people choose to integrate it into their business. There are some incredible tools out there, but the key is using AI to enhance and amplify your brand - not to replace the human touch completely. It’s about finding that balance where AI supports your creativity and strategy rather than taking over entirely. The businesses that figure this out will be the ones that really stand out.
What sets your business apart from competitors in your industry? I’m all about sharing knowledge rather than keeping it to myself. When I work with clients, I don’t just create content for them, I show them how to do it too. Whether it’s filming content, refining their marketing strategy, or helping them simplify the whole process, I make it hands-on and practical. I want my clients to walk away not just with great content but with the confidence and skills to keep growing their brand on their own.
How do you stay inspired and motivated in a constantly changing business landscape? Being a sponge for new knowledge. I absolutely love learning new skills - especially hands-on. If I come across something that piques my interest, I dive in and try it for myself. I’ve always embraced being a student, even in my own business.
How do you set boundaries between your professional and personal life? Honestly, it’s a bit of a struggle for me. My business is such a creative outlet, that even when I’m not officially ‘working,’ I often find myself capturing content or thinking about new ideas. The boundaries shift depending on what my family needs at the time. The biggest lesson I’ve learned is to let go of society’s idea of the ‘perfect’ balance and focus on being flexible with my expectations.

Can you share your career journey and the pivotal moments that led you to your current role? Our children’s neurodiversity challenges sparked my passion for coaching parents, driving me to better understand diverse needs. By combining my event management and business experience, I create practical solutions to empower families. I’m committed to supporting parents, fostering inclusive environments, and helping them confidently navigate neurodiversity, ensuring they feel understood and capable in their parenting journey. This work fuels my dedication to making a positive, lasting impact on families’ lives.
In today’s fast-paced world, how do you maintain a healthy worklife balance (or integration)? Time blocking, prioritising personal goals, and spending quality time with family and friends are crucial for maintaining a healthy work-life balance. In today’s fast-paced world, these practices help me stay grounded, prevent burnout, and stay connected to what truly matters. They allow me to manage my time effectively and nurture meaningful relationships, ensuring I’m able to thrive both personally and professionally without feeling overwhelmed or disconnected.
Can you share any mentorship experiences that have shaped your perspective on empowerment? Jen Rieder and Jenna Ferreira have profoundly influenced my perspective on empowerment, teaching me to embrace my potential, pursue passions, and take bold steps toward my dreams, no matter the obstacles. Their insights, along with Rob Dial and Mel Robbins’ content, inspire action, growth, and self-belief. Key principles - embrace your uniqueness, set clear goals, cultivate a growth mindset, surround yourself with positivity, and practice self-care - guide me in navigating challenges and creating meaningful change in my life.
What legacy do you hope to leave within your industry or community? I hope to leave a legacy of empowerment and understanding by coaching parents to navigate neurodiversity with confidence. Through personalised support, I aim to foster resilient families, advocating for inclusivity and ensuring every child’s unique needs are recognised. My goal is to transform neurodiversity from fear to empowerment, providing parents with the tools and confidence to create thriving, supportive environments where families feel empowered and supported, free from uncertainty or overwhelm.

ttention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is often associated with hyperactive young boys who struggle to sit still in classrooms. However, this stereotype has overshadowed the reality of ADHD in females, leaving many women and girls misunderstood. ADHD in females often presents differently, with unique challenges and symptoms that are less overt but equally impactful. ADHD in females frequently manifests as inattentiveness, emotional dysregulation, and internalised struggles rather than the hyperactivity commonly seen in males. Girls and women with ADHD may appear dreamy, disorganised, or overly emotional, which can be misinterpreted as personality traits rather than neurodivergent thinking. These subtle signs often lead to their struggles being misunderstood and overlooked. For instance, a young girl with ADHD might daydream in class, struggle to complete assignments on time, or feel overwhelmed by social interactions. As she grows older, these challenges can evolve into difficulties managing responsibilities, maintaining relationships, or coping with the demands of work and family life. The constant effort to “mask” their symptoms, by overcompensating, staying quiet, or working harder, may lead to exhaustion, low self-esteem, and mental health challenges. So why is ADHD in females misunderstood and overlooked? Societal expectations may dictate that girls should be well-behaved, organised, and emotionally composed. When girls with ADHD fail to meet these expectations, their struggles are often attributed to laziness, lack of discipline, or emotional sensitivity rather than ADHD. Many females with ADHD develop
sophisticated coping strategies to hide their challenges. They may work tirelessly to stay organised, avoid drawing attention to themselves, or internalise their struggles, making it harder for others to recognise their challenges.
The consequences of misunderstood and overlooked ADHD in females can be profound. Without proper support, they may face academic underachievement, career instability, strained relationships, and chronic feelings of inadequacy. The constant effort to “fit in” and meet societal expectations may lead to burnout, anxiety, and depression. Additionally, many women only become aware of their ADHD in adulthood, leaving them to grapple with years of unacknowledged struggles.
Supporting and helping females with ADHD requires understanding their unique challenges and providing tailored strategies to empower them. Here are some ways you can support and help:
• Educate yourself about ADHD in females. Learn about the emotional and social challenges they may face, such as difficulty managing relationships, self-esteem issues, or feeling overwhelmed by daily tasks.
• Provide emotional support. Listen without judgment and validate their feelings. Many females with ADHD struggle with feelings of inadequacy or being misunderstood. Encourage open communication and create a safe space for them to express their challenges.
• Help with organisation and time management. Assist in creating systems for managing daily tasks, such as using planners, apps, or visual reminders. Break tasks into smaller, manageable steps to reduce overwhelm. Encourage routines that provide structure and predictability.
• Promote self-care and mindfulness. Encourage regular exercise, healthy eating, and sufficient sleep, as these may improve focus and emotional well-being. Introduce mindfulness practices, such as meditation or deep breathing, to help manage stress and improve focus.
• Advocate for Accommodations. If they are in school or the workplace, help them advocate for accommodations like extended deadlines, quiet workspaces, or flexible schedules. Support them in communicating their needs effectively to teachers, employers, or colleagues.
• Foster strengths and interests. Help them identify and focus on their strengths and passions. ADHD often comes with creativity, problem-solving skills, and high energy, which can be channelled positively. Encourage hobbies or activities that bring joy and build confidence.
• Be patient and understanding. Recognise that ADHD is neurodivergent thinking, not a lack of effort or willpower. Avoid criticism or frustration when they struggle with tasks or forget things. Instead, offer gentle reminders and encouragement.
• If needed, encourage professional support. Suggest seeking help from a counsellor who specialises in ADHD. Counselling may help with emotional regulation, coping strategies, and building self-confidence.
By providing understanding, practical support, and encouragement, you can help females with ADHD navigate their challenges and thrive in their personal and professional lives.
Until next time, be kind and gentle with yourself.

Understanding Domestic and Family Violence (DFV)
Domestic and Family Violence (DFV) includes emotional, financial, psychological, sexual, technological, and cultural abuse. It occurs when one person exerts control over another in an intimate or family relationship, creating fear and dependence. Recognising the signs and knowing how to support someone experiencing DFV is crucial. Organisations like Lifeline, DV Alert and 1800RESPECT provide valuable guidance.
Signs of DFV
Common warning signs include:
• Unexplained injuries or frequent accidents
• Withdrawal from family, friends, or usual activities
• Anxiety or fear about their partner’s reactions
• Financial struggles or loss of control over money
• Signs of depression, low self-esteem, or suicidal thoughts
How to Support Someone Experiencing DFV
1. Listen Without Judgment
Provide a safe space where they feel heard and
believed. Avoid blaming or pressuring them. Instead, say:
• “I’m here for you and believe you.”
• “You don’t deserve this. It’s not your fault.”
2. Respect Their Choices
Leaving an abusive relationship is complex. Instead of pressuring them, offer support by saying:
• “You don’t have to go through this alone.”
• “Whenever you’re ready, I’ll help you find support.”
3. Encourage Professional Help
Specialist services provide advice, safety planning, and emergency support. Encourage them to reach out to 1800RESPECT (1800 737 732). Other support options include:
• Lifeline (13 11 14) – Crisis support
• MensLine (1300 789 978) – Support for men
• Safe Steps (1800 015 188) – Crisis accommodation
• Coffs Harbour Women’s Health Centre (02 6652 8111) – Women’s health support
• Warrina Women’s Refuge (02 6652 2400)
– Safe housing
4. Help Create a Safety Plan
If they are considering leaving or are at risk, a safety plan can reduce danger:
• Identify safe places (friends, family, a shelter).
• Pack an emergency bag (ID, money, keys, medications).
• Have a code word to signal danger.
5. Offer Practical Support
You can help by providing:
• A temporary safe place to stay
• Assistance with transport or appointments
• Financial guidance or access to emergency funds like Centrelink Crisis Payment (132 850)
6. Know When to Involve Authorities
If they are in immediate danger, call 000. If unsure about legal options, suggest contacting Legal Aid (1300 888 529) for guidance on protection orders.
Supporting someone experiencing DFV can be challenging, but your role is to be a compassionate ally. Encourage professional help, respect their choices, and remind them they are not alone. Your support could be their turning point toward safety and healing.

Sign up today! Small group, Face-to-face training begins on April 3rd at our Co s Harbour Centre and will run on Thursdays and Saturdays.
Lizzie Moloney is a breast cancer survivor who joined Dragons Abreast Co s Coast a er her cancer treatment and hasn’t looked back! e benefits, both physically and emotionally, have helped her in her recovery and she has built a host of meaningful friendships along the way. She encourages others to join and see firsthand how upli ing paddling with this wonderful group can be.
i Lizzie, can you share a little about your breast cancer journey with us. When were you diagnosed, what was your treatment like, and where are you at now?
I was diagnosed after a routine mammogram in April 2022. I was doing regular breast examinations however I couldn’t feel the lump. It was deep within the breast tissue and a decent size which diagnosed me as stage three breast cancer. This came as a huge shock as I do not have a family history of breast cancer and always thought I was fit and healthy. It was the old cliché - it will never happen to me! Initially I was angry but with a great support network of family and friends I was determined to beat it. Straight after diagnosis, my treatment was a fast whirlwind involving surgery and radiation therapy. Fortunately, my gorgeous surgeon Dr Salindera informed me of genetic testing (not available in Australia) which showed I didn’t need chemotherapy. Hopefully soon that test will be available in Australia. Right now, I am participating in a clinical drug trial. This incredible research will
make things easier for those in the future, who are diagnosed with breast cancer.
Has your experience with breast cancer changed your outlook on life?
It has given me a new appreciation of life. A nurse for 38 years, I have cared for those who have passed and are continuing to fight the cancer battle. It is always in the back of my mind if the cancer will return to me. My experience though has not been entirely negative and has given me an even greater appreciation for my family and friends and basically life in general.
Since then she has become heavily involved with Dragons Abreast Australia (DAA) so I was well informed prior to my own diagnosis. I first met the Coffs Harbour crew at their Biggest Morning Tea a week after my surgery. I could feel the overwhelming support and camaraderie in the room.
I first met the Co s Harbour crew at their Biggest Morning Tea a week a er my surgery. I could feel the overwhelming support and camaraderie in the room.
A huge shout out to the staff at North Coast Cancer Institute, their care and professionalism is second to none, and I found Dragon Boating!
How did you first get involved with Dragons Abreast Coffs Harbour?
One of my very dear friends (support crew) was diagnosed when she was in her 30s.
So once my treatment finished, I started paddling with Dragons Abreast Coffs Coast (DACC). I was welcomed into a group of beautiful supportive women, from all walks of life but with a shared experience.
Dragon boating is known to be beneficial for breast cancer survivors. Can you explain how it helps both physically and emotionally?
DAA started in 1998 in the Northern Territory after a group of breast cancer survivors attended a BCNA breast cancer conference. It was there that a Canadian speaker spoke about a research program that was conducted by Dr
Don McKenzie about the benefits of paddling. Research showed repetitive exercise increased upper body strength and did not increase lymphedema risk as was once thought. It was also shown to promote a healthy lifestyle, and camaraderie with the support of fellow paddlers. For myself, I was always a water baby so being on the water is my zen place. It’s really something that needs to be experienced. We don’t sit around talking about our cancer, but we know support is there when needed. So, as well as being great physically, the emotional and mental benefits are a great bonus. What does being part of the Dragons Abreast community mean to you?
It’s a community of the most fabulous fun. Yearly there is a “pink paddle” somewhere in Australia. This year it’s at the Gold Coast. We have a day of dragon boat racing followed by a dinner full of laughter and spectacular dancing! Once the racing concludes, all boats join together for the Flowers on the Water Ceremony where flowers are placed on the water remembering angels that have lost the battle and those still fighting. Next year I am traveling to France for the International Breast Cancer Paddling Commission’s festival where 4,500 survivors from all over the world will meet. I am so excited and can’t wait! A quote from DAA Instagram sums it up perfectly “Dragons Abreast Australia dragon boat clubs celebrate life. Our members have all been impacted by breast cancer, either through diagnosis or as a support person. BCS paddlers are UNSTOPPABLE! Our race is against breast cancer. We are winners because we are still paddling dragon boats! Connect. Move. Live”
What are some of the upcoming events or goals for Dragons Abreast Coffs Harbour that you're excited about?
In February we had a sewing bee making bags for those undergoing surgical treatment for breast cancer. We hold regular meetings/ social outings and monthly paddles followed by afternoon tea on the amazing Mylestom river. In April we are paddling from Mylestom to Raleigh Wineries for breakfast, always a great paddle and feed! We have a Bunnings Barbeque at least once a year and in October for breast cancer month, we hold a mini field of women where personal messages can
be placed on our pink ladies, blue men or white ladies honoring those who are battling, surviving or are now angels. Our goal is to spread awareness for breast cancer, living with breast cancer and living your best life.
What would you say to someone who has experienced breast cancer who might be hesitant to try dragon boating? Just do it! You don’t realise how much fun it is, especially at the regattas. The benefits both physically and emotionally are amazing. We offer a Dragon Pass which covers you for 28 days to try paddling, a try before you buy type scenario.
How can the local community best support Dragons Abreast and breast cancer survivors?
When you see us holding events, come and say hello. We have heaps of information and are welcoming to all survivors, battlers and supporters. All donations are much appreciated, assisting our members to continue with the health benefits of paddling. Also, please come and support us at our Mini Field of Women and honour all those affected by this horrible condition.
Where can we find out more or get in touch?
You can find us on our website dragonsabreastcoffscoast.com, on Facebook and Instagram or you can phone: 0412 729 604. Reach out and we will get straight back to you.
Thanks Lizzie.
When the time comes for you or a parent to move into residential care, choosing the right service is an important but complex decision.
Sometimes your choice may be limited because of the urgency or the availability of suitable places, and the pressure can be overwhelming. But making the right choice is key to a good experience.
It might help to take an approach that is similar to the approach you would take if you were buying or renting any property, and break down your decisions into four steps:
1. Choose the location
2. Consider what feels like home and what amenities are important to access
3. Check the price for affordability
4. Structure your finances to meet the costs.
Choosing the location
When choosing where to live, location is always the first consideration. This might be based on the lifestyle you want to live, or what you want to be close to.
Do you want to stay in the same area where you have been living so you can continue with the same doctor, hairdresser, church group and friends. Or, would it be better to move closer to your children so visits can be more regular.
This can be different for everyone – but it is important to understand where you feel comfortable and what makes you happy.
Is this a newly-built service or does an older style service feel more homely? If you have always lived in a stand-alone home, would you be comfortable in a multistorey building? If you loved to spend time in the garden, you might be happiest if you can find somewhere with access to good gardens and lots of open space.
As well as the physical look and feel, think about how it might feel to live there. Does it have a friendly and relaxed feel or does it all feel a bit clinical?
If you are taking a tour of a residential service watch how staff interact with the residents. Ask about additional lifestyle services and choices you might have for things like entertainment and meals.
Choose an affordable service
The price of a room in residential care can range up to $3 million. But the price of homes also varies greatly. The reality is that you need to find something in an affordable price range.
This does not mean you have to hand over large lump sums for aged care. You can choose to pay a daily fee to “rent” if that suits you better. This can help you to afford a more expensive room.
Many people find a way to enter and pay for aged care, but they often don’t consider all the options available to them. It’s important to compare and contrast different financial arrangements to ensure you make the best decision for your situation. This also ensures that there are no unpleasant financial surprises popping up during your time in care (such as running out of funds).
If you are thinking about a move yourself, or have an older family member that needs care, call me on 0431 414 799 to discuss how I can help.

Is it just another mundane assembly ritual, or does our national anthem hold deeper meaning for today’s globally minded students? As debate swirls around national identity, let’s explore why those lyrics still matter in our contemporary classrooms. Those Famous Lines. When our students belt out, “Australians all let us rejoice,” they’re actually stepping into a conversation about who we are as a nation. The word “all” might seem straightforward, but it packs a complex punch. Written in a different era (1878), it has sparked important discussions about inclusivity, especially regarding our First Nations peoples. In today’s context it can be read as being inclusive but at the time the lyrics were written, Aboriginal Australians were considered in the Flora and Fauna Act and not deemed as citizens.
That “young and free” line? It’s complicated. While it captures the youthful energy of our modern nation, remember that prior to the six colonies forming the Commonwealth of Australia that the continent had a wonderful pre-colonialism legacy stretching back at least 65,000 years, and included about 600 nations with at least 250 languages and dialects spoken. What also needs to be fed into this debate is that Australia wasn’t federated until 1901 and these lyrics reflect the Commonwealth of Australia as a modern country. “It’s a teachable moment,” says Dr. Sarah Chen, an education specialist. “Students get to grapple with different perspectives of what ‘young’ really means in the anthem.”
“Golden soil and wealth for toil” isn’t just pretty poetry – it’s an economic reality check. These words connect directly to Australia’s current economic landscape from mining booms to agricultural challenges. When students sing about being “girt by sea,” they might giggle at the archaic word, but they’re also learning about Australia’s unique geographic position in an increasingly interconnected world.
The environmental message in “nature’s gifts of beauty, rich and rare” hits differently in 2025. With climate change and conservation hot topics in our classrooms, these lyrics offer a springboard into discussions about environmental responsibility.
Perhaps the most relevant lines for today’s diverse classrooms are “For those who’ve come across the seas, we’ve boundless plains to share.” In an era of global migration debates, these words resonate with students from varied backgrounds. It’s powerful when students realise the anthem acknowledges Australia’s immigrant heritage. It also needs to be read in the context of modern immigration rates. The Australian Centre for Population states that there were 718,000 arrivals and just 209,000 departures over the 12 months to March 2024. This means a net migration rate of 509,000 new Australians.
Teachers are finding creative ways to make this19th-century song meaningful to 21stcentury kids by analysing the lyrics like poetry; or debating about what they’d include in a modern anthem.

The Southern Cross mention connects astronomy to national identity. Some students question parts of the anthem. “These conversations are gold,” says Indigenous education consultant Amanda Thompson. “When students critically engage with national symbols, they develop real civic awareness.” Why It Still Matters. Does a national anthem still have a place in an age of individualism and global citizenship? Absolutely!. It provides common ground in schools, teaches civic values, and prompts discussions about who we are as Australians. As an educator in his 50s I remember singing God Save the Queen in primary school up until 1974 when the Whitlam government replaced it with Advance Australia Fair, the Fraser government reintroduced God Save the Queen in 1976 and in 1977 a public plebiscite showed preference for Advance Australia Fair. In 1984, the Hawke government officially proclaimed it as our national anthem. The young and “free” line really illustrates the people’s power in our country’s selfdetermination. Our anthem serves as a living document, evolving in meaning as each new generation interprets it. It’s not just about learning lyrics – it’s about understanding our past, debating our present, and imagining our future, and isn’t that what education is all about.
Students are participating in an ongoing national dialogue. And isn’t that what education is all about?
Southern Cross University’s National Marine Science Centre at Charlesworth Bay focuses on the resilience of marine ecosystems and resources. Researchers at this stateof-the-art facility are also exploring the health benefits to humans of marine molluscs.
While slurping oysters is not likely to replace popping a pill, they could help in the fight against superbugs. A groundbreaking find out of Southern Cross University has shown oysters might be able to help treat a growing worldwide public health problem: antibiotic-resistant bacteria.
New Southern Cross University research demonstrates a protein the hemolymph (which is like blood), of Sydney Rock Oysters, not only kills bacteria but increases the effectiveness of some conventional antibiotics against a range of clinically important bacteria.
The finding supports the potential use of natural products from oysters to treat bacterial infections. Importantly, the oyster hemolymph proteins were not toxic to human lung cells, suggesting it should be possible to optimise a safe, effective dose.
Lead paper author, Dr Kate Summer, made the remarkable discovery at the Southern Cross University health laboratories on the Gold Coast during her PhD. Now working as a postdoctoral researcher at the Kids Research Institute Australia, Kate is committed to advancing child and family health through her research.
Kate’s PhD supervisor was Professor Kirsten Benkendorff who is based at the National Marine Science Centre in Charlesworth Bay. For the past two decades, Professor Benkendorff has been investigating ways to safeguard the health of our oceans and the seafood we eat; at the same time exploring how humans can harness the health benefits of molluscs.
“Most organisms have natural defence mechanisms to protect themselves against infection,” said Professor Benkendorff, reflecting on the origins of the study.
“Oysters are constantly filtering bacteria from the water, so they are a good place to look for potential antibiotics.”
In a previous study, the research team identified a protein fraction in the hemolymph (blood) of the Sydney Rock Oyster that inhibits Streptococcus pneumoniae, a bacterium that causes respiratory infections like pneumonia and tonsilitis. In the latest paper, the team demonstrated the oyster hemolymph protein is highly active against clinical strains of Streptococcus pneumoniae and Streptococcus pyrogenes. When combined with conventional antibiotics, the oyster protein reduces the

antibiotic dosage required to eliminate several other respiratory pathogens, including Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Klebsiella pneumoniae, and Staphylococcus aureus (Golden Staph).
Bacteria that cause infections often escape from antibiotics and the immune system by forming biofilms to protect themselves. Biofilms are communities of microorganisms that attach to surfaces, enclosed in a sticky, protective matrix. The team’s discovery showed oyster hemolymph can kill bacterial pathogens in solution and in biofilms.
“The oyster hemolymph proteins were found to prevent biofilm formation and disrupt biofilms, so the bacteria become available to antibiotic exposure at lower doses,” said Professor Benkendorff.
“The hemolymph contains a mixture of proteins, some with known antimicrobial properties. These may act to directly kill the bacteria, as well as preventing them from attaching to the cell surface.”
Antibiotics have been the mainstay of
treatment for bacterial infections since the early 20th century.
Unfortunately, bacteria have developed resistance to many conventional antibiotics due to overuse and misuse of these medications. Antimicrobial resistance is predicted to cause 40 million deaths by 2050. The need to discover new antibiotics is urgent.
While a new antibiotic drug developed from oyster blood is still some time away, the discovery brings hope for natural alternatives to treat infections.
“It provides great opportunities for collaboration between researchers, aquaculture and pharmaceutical industries,” said Professor Benkendorff.
“In the meantime, slurping oysters could help keep the respiratory bugs away. Oysters contain zinc which boosts the immune system and they have Omega 3 polyunsaturated fatty acids with antiinflammatory activity and vitamins with antioxidant activity.”

This latest research bolsters the widespread recognition Professor Benkendorff has earned throughout her distinguished career. Science & Technology Australia named her one of its 2023-2024 Superstars of STEM, an initiative dedicated to addressing gender inequity by increasing the visibility of diverse role models in the media.
“I am proud to be a role model for women in science,” said Professor Benkendorff. “Science and technology are critical for tackling the complex global challenges we face today. I hope to inspire others to be part of the solution.”
Professor Benkendorff plays a vital role in shaping the next generation of scientists at the National Marine Science Centre in Coffs Harbour. This March, a new cohort of students will embark on their marine science journey under the guidance of renowned researchers and academics at Southern Cross University. Keep an eye out for what they discover next!

Over the span of my career prior to having the privilege of being elected as the Federal Member for Cowper in 2019, I was a police officer, police prosecutor, defence lawyer and small business owner. I have always worked in service of my community and have an experienced insight into the challenges our region faces every day. As a husband and father of two, I know we all want the same things for our families. Like the majority of my National Party colleagues, I am by no means a career politician. As a team, we base decisions on common sense and community feedback rather than ideology or political point scoring.
Over the past six years as your elected representative in Federal Parliament, I have been listening to our community and hearing your needs loud and clear. From my weekly mobile offices throughout the electorate, to the hundreds of calls, emails and letters that I receive each day, there have been clear and
As your locally elected representative in Canberra, my focus has always been on ensuring that our beautiful Mid North Coast gets the Federal Government support we need and deserve to keep our communities thriving.
consistent priorities that have shone through. We all want the same things for our families. You want and deserve a government that is serious about tackling cost of living pressures and lowering inflation, serious about providing access to quality health care, aged care and child care, serious about removing red tape and government over reach and serious about creating policies that benefit us all, not just those that yell the loudest.
As a member of the National Party and the coalition, I take the responsibility of being able to form government and drive the national agenda seriously. Together, we do the heavy lifting when it comes to policy creation and budgetary decisions. As part of a team, I have always been committed to putting
the needs of regional Australia in the national spotlight and only the National Party has the strength in numbers and the experience to secure that in the House of Representatives.
Over the past six years as your elected representative in Federal Parliament, I have been listening to our community and hearing your needs loud and clear.
Over the past three years under a Labor, Greens and Teal Government, policy has been driven by an inner-city suburban agenda and our regional interests have been dismissed. I pledge to ensure that our voices are heard and that our needs are carefully considered with every policy put forward by a Coalition Government.
I promise to bring common sense back to Canberra. Let’s get our country, and Regional Australia, back on track.
Authorised by Pat Conaghan, MP, National Party of Australia. Level 4, JBC Building, 41-47 Horton St, Port Macquarie NSW 2444.
Australia’s inflation rate under Labor is higher than any major advanced economy in the world. I support cutting wasteful spending, reducing red and green tape and returning to the Coalition’s responsible economic management. Labor’s cost-of-living crisis is causing so much pain for locals.
While the latest 0.25% interest rate cut is a welcome relief, we have seen 12 interest rate rises under Labor. Only by controlling government spending and reducing energy prices will we see home and small business mortgage rates come down. Labor’s poor policies have kept mortgage rates high.
Hearing directly from our community on the issues that affect them most
We will unlock up to 500,000 new homes by funding essential infrastructure like water, power and sewerage at housing development sites.
My plan supports first home buyers by letting them use part of their super for a deposit. We need to reduce migration – over the past two years there have been nearly four new arrivals for every new home built. I support a two year ban on foreign investors and temporary residents buying Australian homes.
Labor promised a $275 reduction in energy bills but our power and gas costs have kept increasing. Today, Australians pay some of the highest power prices in the world. I support a sensible, low-cost energy plan that includes more Australian gas and, in seven locations, retired coal plants will be replaced with zero-emissions nuclear energy.
I support stronger defence and border security that includes deporting non-citizens who commit violence crimes. I will work with the state government to implement tougher knife laws and tighter bail laws. And I’ll support online safety programs for our children.
Labor’s neglected our regions for years. I will fight for better broadband and will work to bring back the Coalition’s Building Better Regions Fund that delivered for our local communities. I support the Black Spot Road Safety program as there are still too many accidents on our country roads.
As well as cost of living relief, my plan includes ensuring families will have real choice when it comes to education, childcare and access to local community services. There is simply too much pressure on local families.
I know how critical small businesses are in our local communities – whether they’re farmers or those that supply our goods and services. I support the instant asset write off and creating a strong economy so all business owners have the confidence to plan for the future and employ more local residents.
We need better local health care closer to home as it’s become so hard under Labor to find doctors’ appointments, especially appointments which are bulk-billed. I strongly support the Coalition’s $400 million plan to boost the number of graduate doctors going into general practice. I also support reinstating the number of Medicare-subsidised mental health sessions from 10 to 20 after Labor cut these in 2022 for over 240,000 Australians.
I secured $6.8m so the ground-breaking Dementia Care Village ‘Emmaus’ could be delivered in Port Macquarie.

Growing up on the Coffs Coast could only be described as idyllic for me and my mates.
We all knew our neighbours, and they knew us.
The locks on our roller doors didn’t work - irrelevant anyway, because they were often left open.
Our house, like almost every house in our street, didn’t have a fence. Doors were left unlocked and crime was basically non-existent.
But, for many years now, our way of life in country communities has been under attack.
People who once felt safe in their own homes now live in communities with security cameras on every building, fences around every property and nightly stories of youth crime running out of control.
Community members are quite understandably frustrated that their hard-earned wages are having to be spent on repairing doors, replacing car keys, installing security cameras and paying insurance excesses, not to mention escalating insurance premiums.
The official Bureau of Crime Statistics and Research figures don’t tell the whole story, but they do paint a very concerning picture on the Coffs Coast.
Motor vehicle thefts are up 35 per cent in two years and sit at double the state average. Break and enter offences are 64 per cent higher than the state average.
The bail statistics back up the community’s calls to get tougher on repeat offenders.
According to the figures, if bail conditions were breached, bail was continued 83 per cent of the time despite the breach.
That is a record-high statistic. Is it not common sense that bail should be refused if the accused is already on bail for serious offences?
Laws passed last year still allow courts to grant bail to a person aged 14 to 18 who commits a serious offence if the court believes they will not offend again, despite having just reoffended while on bail.
Reviewing this loophole warrants a thorough reassessment.
Another area that warrants reassessment is the legal doctrine of doli incapax.
They almost always know what they’re doing is seriously wrong.
It can be almost impossible for the prosecution to demonstrate beyond a reasonable doubt that the child knew their actions were seriously wrong in a criminal sense.
Reversing the onus of proof so that the defence has to prove doli incapax would bring us into line with countries like England for this age group.
Another area to explore opportunities for improvement is to place significant weight on the impact of the offence on the victim as an aggravating factor when sentencing.
Laws passed last year still allow courts to grant bail to a person aged 14 to 18 who commits a serious o ence if the court believes they will not o end again, despite having just reo ended while on bail.
The doctrine presumes that children aged between 10 and 14 are not sufficiently developed to understand the difference between right and wrong in a criminal sense.
Most of the young offenders in the security videos are covering their faces and run away when confronted by the law or by landholders.
Giving victims of crime greater weight in sentencing will mean that the harm they faced is taken into account when the sentence is determined. We all want to live in safe communities, and nobody wants a generation of young people going down a criminal path.
I will continue to support and advocate for the many very effective youth justice interventions that are successful in changing young lives.
But when they do not work, we need tougher laws. We have to act now.

When The Glitter Fades is inspired by the Broadway family's rich history in Australian entertainment. What drew you to their story, and why did you choose to fictionalise it?
I used to love watching the old black and white films starring movie stars like Judy Garland, Mickey Rooney, Shirley Temple and Bojangles. It was beautiful to watch such talent perform but what about Australian entertainers?
I met Shirley Barnett (nee Broadway) at Coffs Harbour Jetty Theatre after I moved from Sydney and began teaching drama. When Shirley told me she came from a family of vaudeville performers who toured Victoria during the Great Depression, I nearly jumped out of my skin. I wanted to hear every detail of her life.
Jacqx Melilli is a local writer who has recently released her book When The Glitter Fades; an Australian historical fiction novel tale based loosely on the lives of the Broadways, a family of vaudeville performers who toured during the Great Depression. Jacqx was inspired to write the story after meeting Coffs Harbour local Shirley Barnett (nee Broadway) who had an incredible 90 year career in the entertainment industry!
Shirley went on to work in Australian television when it began broadcasting in the late 1950s.
Alf Spargo invited Shirley to audition at HSV-7 (Channel 7) where she worked as part of the variety act team and on the game show Stop the Music. She later worked on The Late Show with Bert Newton and then on In Melbourne Tonight at GTV-9 (Channel 9) with Graham Kennedy.
The reason I decided to fictionalise the story was because I had to start with how Shirley got her start as a child performer, born into showbiz. Since she was just a baby, she couldn’t remember the details of how they survived the Great Depression. The last thing I wanted to do was incorrectly depict Shirley’s parents. The better option to keep their name and contribution to Australian entertainment alive was to loosely base a story around their professional lives and some of the dramatic events that happened to them.
The other reason was because I understood the
difficulty of selling books. By creating a really engaging, dramatical and entertaining story, it would appeal to a wider market. I also thought it would make a great film, so the story and characters had to pack a punch.
Shirley had an incredible 90-year career in entertainment. What aspects of her journey most fascinated you?
I was fascinated, and shocked, when Shirley told me that her first performance was when she was six weeks old! Her father, Alf Broadway, used Shirley in a skit that horrified the audience. And no, I’m not going to tell you about it. You’ll have to read it for yourself.
I also admired how the passion for performing never left Shirley, despite the hardships she endured when it looked like the curtain was closed for good. She was a patron of the Jetty Theatre until she passed away at the age of 90 in February 2021.
Your novel is described as a generational
saga with a love triangle and themes of revenge. Can you give us a glimpse into the characters and central conflicts?
The story spans from the 1920s to 1950s just before Australian television started. Both the main characters, Vinnie and Artis, fall in love with Belle. When Vinnie loses out, his obsession to win her back becomes the catalyst for disaster. Vinnie’s marriage of convenience to Rose gives him the financial means to rise to the top and get his revenge. Little does he know that he’s married into Melbourne’s underbelly.
There are a lot of layers to the story. The four characters come from radically different backgrounds, bringing with them the good vs evil dynamics that drive the story. I lost control of the characters when they began demanding their voices be heard and the pain and complexities of their lives surfaced. Writing is strange like that - you have to allow the voices to speak.
What has been the response to the book so far? Have you received any feedback from those who knew the Broadway family?
Some
people have lived incredible lives. People love well-old stories, and so do writers because these are the gold nuggets that help us the most when we are researching.
I was thrilled when Barry Crocker AM, who knew Shirley’s brother, John, gave it the thumbs up! He said that when he was reading When The Glitter Fades he was visualising a television miniseries!
Shirley’s daughter, Sue Broadway, founding member and Artistic Director of Circus Oz, thought the research on the touring was gold, and she was pleased that the book was dedicated to her mother.
What were some of the biggest challenges you faced in blending historical facts with fiction?
Blending historical facts with fiction actually made writing less challenging because it gave me the freedom to create a much more engaging story based on facts. It was challenging trying to write about people I’d never met, so creating fictional characters was much easier.
Your research for the novel sparked your
for memoir writing. Why do you believe it’s so important for people to document their life experiences?
If more people had documented their life story it would have made my job a lot easier. I had to dig deep for information.
Some people have lived incredible lives. People love well-old stories, and so do writers because these are the gold nuggets that help us the most when we are researching.
Your workshop, How to Write and Sell Your Memoir Even if You’re Not Famous, sounds intriguing! What key lessons do participants take away from it?
The feedback I’ve had from participants is how much they learned about how to structure a story so it’s engaging, rather than simply documenting their memories. Topics such as compiling information, laying out chapters, dealing with sensitive issues and publication choices are covered.
You have a Master of Arts in Writing and Literature and experience in multiple forms of storytelling, from scriptwriting to children’s media. How does this diverse background influence your approach to writing?
It’s helped me to write more visually, so that I’m describing the story in detail as if you were watching it as part of the audience. It also helps with writing dialogue. I wrote When The Glitter Fades with a film in mind, because I thought it would make a spectacular film with all the costumes, performances, and drama.
Where can we find your book, more information on workshops, or get in touch?

an you tell us about your business?
I’m a Social Media and Marketing Coach & Consultant, and honestly I live and breathe content creation. With 19 years of experience in marketing and digital production, I’ve done it all - from big-budget campaigns to creative DIY content that goes viral. I specialise in coaching businesses on how to leverage the fastestgrowing marketing platforms, helping them create content that stops the scroll and sparks engagement. Whether it’s filming, coaching, or strategy, I help businesses show up online in a way that feels authentic, fun, and most importantly, effective. Oh, and I promise to make content creation way less stressful!
What’s your favourite part of the work you do?
The variety! One day, I’m deep-diving into an author’s storytelling process, and the next, I’m filming someone eat a 1kg donut. No two days are the same, and I love that! I get to step into different industries, hear people’s stories, and help them turn those stories into content that connects. But the best part? Seeing clients go from feeling overwhelmed by social media to actually enjoying it - and watching their business grow because of it! There’s nothing better than hearing, “I finally
feel confident creating content!” That’s why I do what I do.
Who is your greatest influence in business?
Honestly, I don’t have one single influence because I’ve been lucky to learn from so many incredible people. Every role I’ve worked in within my career has taught me something valuable. But if I had to choose, I’d say my parents. From a young age, they drilled two things into me: work hard and respect people’s time. That’s stuck with me my whole life and shaped the way I approach business. Whether I’m coaching a client or filming a brand’s next viral moment, I show up fully, give 110%, and make sure every second counts.
What do you love about living and working on the Coffs Coast?
Oh, where do I start?! First off - actual seasons! After 12 years in Cairns (aka endless summer), I love experiencing autumn and crisp winter mornings, and let’s talk about the beaches and being able to swim without worrying about crocs or stingers? Absolute luxury! But what really makes Coffs special is the people. There’s this incredible sense of community, and the way local businesses support each other is next level. Whether it’s collaborations, networking, or just cheering each other on, the small business scene here is unreal. Plus, I get to live in paradise and work
with amazing clients—win-win! What piece of advice would you give women making their way in the business world?
Stop waiting for permission. Seriously. If you’ve got an idea, a vision, or something you’re passionate about - go for it. Not everyone will understand it, and that’s okay. It’s not their dream, it’s yours. I’ve seen too many women hold back because they’re worried about what others will think. My advice? Don’t let someone else’s doubts become your roadblocks. Back yourself, trust your instincts, and surround yourself with people who lift you up. And if you ever feel like quitting, remember why you started. You’ve got this! Coming from an engineering background as a Fitter Machinist I had the opportunity to expand my trade qualifications and experience in other related areas. While I was often working overtime our 3 young daughters were growing up fast. My wife Leah and I decided to take a chance and start our own local business with the aim to provide our family with more flexibility and work life balance. Something I am so grateful for.
Can you explain abrasive blasting and why it is essential for surface preparation? Abrasive blasting effectively removes old failed coatings, rust, corrosion, and other contaminants, leaving a clean and profiled surface ensuring the best possible adhesion and bonding for new coatings. Without the proper foundation you risk future failed coatings.
What types of projects do you typically work on, and what industries do you service?
Our team are able to offer both onsite and mobile abrasive blasting services with our equipment. This allows us to service the

local Coffs Coast and beyond. Industries and job scales vary from clients restoring their beloved vintage car or bike to their special piece of furniture. We also provide services for residential and commercial swimming pools, large commercial structural steel projects, industrial asset maintenance for example tipper trucks and excavators, trailers. Basically, if it needs to be coated we can prepare it for you or complete the project from start to finish including coatings depending on your project's specifications.
Wet abrasive blasting reduces dust by up to 90%. How does this benefit both your team and the communities where you work?
The introduction of water is for dust suppression during abrasive blasting and is highly beneficial where 100% containment cannot be achieved. By using the wet abrasive method we are able to keep mess and containments to a minimum, ensuring a more effective clean up process and safer work environment for our team and community. What does a typical day look like for you
and your team?
This depends totally upon the project we are completing at the time and the weather conditions impacting our process and coating conditions needed. In general we discuss the expectations and specification requirements with our clients. As mentioned earlier, we could be working onsite at the yard or an offsite location. For example we recently had the pleasure of restoring this Big 4 Holiday Park swimming pool!
Either way we typically have a toolbox meeting, gear up head to toe in our PPE including air fed helmet and begin blasting the surface, remove excess residue and depending on the surface substrate apply a prime coat to ensure there is no flash rusting. The coating process would then follow.
What’s the most rewarding part of your job?
It would have to be taking projects from old and rusty to new and shiny! Being a part of the transformation is very rewarding and seeing our customers stoked with the result definitely makes my day.
I’d also have to say our team, when you have a great team it really makes the job enjoyable.
As someone who grew up here on the Coffs Coast, what does it mean to you to serve the Mid North Coast community?
My family moved from Papua New Guinea to the Coffs Coast when I was a teenager. Having 3 daughters of my own now, I’m proud to be able to work here and raise my family in such a beautiful place. We are truly blessed to call the Coffs Coast home.
Working here on the Mid North Coast also provides the opportunity to network with the local community and support other local businesses. That’s who keeps us in operation and I am so grateful to all our customers and the businesses who support us.
Where do you see Coffs Eco Blast in the next five years? Do you have any plans or goals for the future of your business?
I’m excited for Coffs Eco Blast to continue to grow and expand its services.
How can people learn more about your services or get in touch for a project?
You can find Coffs Eco Blast on Google, Facebook and Instagram. For any project enquiries or quotes please call, text or email. More than happy to have a chat!
Thanks Monty.
Rowan Simon grew up in Bellingen and then spent 10 years travelling the globe, before se ling back in his hometown where he took over the former Bellingen YHA and turned it into e Belfry Guesthouse. Rowan has used his extensive travel experience to elevate e Belfry into a place of peace, comfort and community.. A home away from home for his guests.
Hi Rowan. You grew up in Bellingen but spent a decade travelling the world, how did those experiences shape your approach to hospitality?
Traveling the globe has exposed me to so many different styles of hospitality, from boutique guesthouses in Europe to vibrant backpacker lodges in South America. What I took away from that was the importance of creating a space that feels both welcoming and personal. The best places I stayed weren’t just about comfort; they had a unique atmosphere and a real sense of community. That’s what I wanted to bring to The Belfry - a place where guests feel at home, connect with others, and experience the best of Bellingen.
What inspired you to take over the former Bellingen YHA ten years ago and transform it into The Belfry Guesthouse? Moving home after many years away I still
wanted to have a connection to the cultures of the world. I started out running tours for the Bellingen YHA, then working as a staff member, and then managing it. When the opportunity came up to take it over, I saw a chance to not only continue that legacy that owners Paul and Amanda had created but to add my own flair. I wanted to create a space that blended the charm of a boutique guesthouse with the social warmth of a hostel, offering a stay that feels both relaxed and refined.
I wanted to create a space that blended the charm of a boutique guesthouse with the social warmth of a hostel, o ering a stay that feels both relaxed and refined.
The Belfry is designed to feel like a home away from home. It’s laid-back, inviting, and full of character, with a focus on community and connection. Guests can enjoy stunning views over the Great Dividing Range and the Bellinger River, relax in our openair lounge, or chat with fellow travellers in the shared spaces. It’s a place where you can unwind in nature, be part of a creative and welcoming environment, and feel like you’re truly experiencing the heart of Bellingen.
How would you describe the atmosphere and experience guests can expect at The Belfry?
Winning the award for Best Accommodation Experience on the North Coast at the NSW Tourism Awards is a huge achievement, congratulations! What
do you think sets The Belfry apart?
It’s incredibly rewarding.
Running a guesthouse is a labour of love, and this award is a reflection of the e ort, passion, and care we put into every guest’s stay.
Thank you! I think it comes down to the unique blend of atmosphere, service, price, and location. We focus on providing a genuine and personal experience. Our team really takes the time to get to know our guests, and that makes a difference. The Belfry also embraces Bellingen’s natural beauty and creative spirit, offering a stay that’s more than just a place to sleep, it’s an experience in itself, and great value as well. What does this award mean to you and your team on a personal level?
It’s incredibly rewarding. Running a guesthouse is a labour of love, and this award is a reflection of the effort, passion, and care we put into every guest’s stay. For the team, it’s validation that what we do makes a difference, that people feel something special when they stay
here. It also motivates us to keep improving and evolving.
Bellingen is known to attract a mix of nature lovers, creatives, and adventurers. What do you think draws people to this town?
There’s something magical about Bellingen. The mix of lush rainforest, rolling farmland, and the Bellinger River creates a stunning natural backdrop, but it’s more than just the scenery. The town has a strong sense of community, a thriving arts and music scene, and a welcoming, open-minded energy. It’s a place where people can slow down, connect with nature, and be inspired.
After years of travelling, what do you love most about being back in Bellingen?
The pace of life here is something I’ve really come to appreciate. After years of moving around, being able to put down roots in a place
that values creativity, community, and nature is a gift. I also love the diversity of people who pass through - whether locals or visitors, there’s always an interesting conversation to be had. Do you have any future plans or ideas in store for The Belfry?
We’re always looking for ways to improve the guest experience. We’ve recently been focusing on sustainability initiatives, and I’d love to expand on that - things like more ecofriendly practices and collaborations with local businesses. We’re also considering offering more curated experiences, such as guided nature walks, creative workshops, or local food and wine events.

CHANGES TO THE RESIDENTIAL TENANCIES ACT: What Landlords and Tenants on the Co s Coast Need to Know
he Residential Tenancies Act (RTA) in New South Wales is undergoing significant changes, impacting landlords and tenants across the Coffs Coast. With an emphasis on improving tenant rights and housing affordability, these updates aim to create a more balanced rental market. Here’s a summary of some of the key changes and how they may affect all parties.
No-Grounds Evictions:
• Landlords will no longer be able to end a tenancy without providing a valid reason, such as the intention to move into the property or carry out significant renovations.
• This change offers tenants greater stability and security in the rental market.
Alterations to Property:
• Tenants can now request to make minor modifications with prior approval from landlords.
• Landlords cannot unreasonably decline certain requests (e.g., picture hooks, shelving).
• This allows tenants to personalise their rental space.
• Rent increases can only occur once every 12 months for both periodic and fixed term tenancies.
• Landlords must provide notice and justification for any increase, offering tenants more predictability and protection against steep hikes.
• Landlords cannot unreasonably refuse a pet request but must provide a valid reason:
- that allowing the animal would lead to an unreasonable number of animals at the property;
- the property is not suitable for the animal because fencing is inadequate, there is not enough open space or the property would not allow the animal to be kept humanely;
- keeping the animal would likely cause damage that would cost more to repair than the rental bond;
- the landlord lives at the property;
- keeping the animal would violate a law, regulation, local council order, by-law or community rule, or
- the tenant has not agreed to a reasonable condition proposed by the landlord.
• Landlords can impose conditions, such as requiring extra cleaning or maintenance, to mitigate the impact of pet ownership.
• Landlords must ensure rental properties meet minimum safety and liveability standards, including adequate heating, ventilation, and electrical safety.
The changes to the Residential Tenancies Act aim to strike a fairer balance between the needs of landlords and tenants. Tenants will benefit from increased security, more control over their living space, and greater rights in regards to pets. At the same time, landlords will be required to ensure their properties meet higher standards of safety and maintainability.
On the Coffs Coast, where rental demand remains high, these reforms are set to create a more stable and equitable rental market. Both landlords and tenants should stay informed and adjust their practices to navigate this evolving landscape.
