David Tunstead is a 5th generation oyster farmer here on the Hastings River, and is passing his skills down to his boys who may well just become 6th generation oyster farmers. David, also known locally as Tunny, is passionate about producing world class oysters and continuing the family’s legacy.

H
i David, can you start by telling us a bit about yourself and how you became an oyster farmer?
I’m David Tunstead (Tunny) and I’m a Port Macquarie local born and bred. I’m a 5th generation oyster farmer here on the Hastings and some of our leases have been in my family for over 150 years. We grew up as kids spending summer on the farm helping Dad with harvest. After school I did a lot of travelling and playing rugby, and then when I came back from a 3 year stint in the UK in 2009, I began full time work with my father Pete. I was so blessed to spend the next 12 years working every day with my Dad until he passed away a couple of years ago. What drew you to oyster farming and what do you love the most about working in the industry? 18 GREATER PORT MACQUARIE focus
As I said before I was always drawn back into the family oyster farming business, it's been in the blood for so long. What I love is producing quality oysters and seeing customers say ‘ohh these are the best oysters I’ve had’. I also love walking in the footsteps of my ancestors having the challenges they had and overcame, learning their knowledge that was passed down to them and now passing it down to my 3 boys who all want to become 6th generation farmers. That’s what farming is, leaving the place in a better condition so the next generation can have their turn. Can you tell us about your oyster farm, where it’s located, how long it’s been in operation, and what sets it apart from others? I’m located in the beautiful Hastings River. Most of our growing areas are around Kings Point, Big Bay and Limeburners Creek. The leases at Kings
Point have been in the family for over 110 years, but years before that, my great-great-great grandfather John Dick and his son William first started oyster farming in Koolunbung Creek in the 1850s. What type of oysters do you farm and are there any specific techniques and methods you use to grow them? I farm Sydney Rock Oysters that are unique to the east coast of NSW. They’re traditionally farmed between Bega and Brisbane and that’s the only place in the world they naturally spawn. Sydney Rock Oysters are world class oysters, other oysters can grow bigger but no oyster comes close in depth of flavours as a fat rock oyster. Farming methods have changed so much over the last 30 years and I still remember helping Dad and Pop chibbling oysters off the old sandstone rocks. They were laid out in rock tables, then we went to tarred sticks and trays
one oyster can filter up to 50 litres of water a day, plus they’re a super food with so many vitamins, and, they taste amazing. Our farming methods with floating bag lines have also improved so much, natural seagrass and fish live around the structures as well. Do you have a favourite way to enjoy oysters? Any tips for people who might be new to eating them? Natural freshly shucked is my favourite, you can’t beat a freshly shucked oyster. Although lately I’ve been making this chilli mango sauce to have with them. Tips for new people; try them kilpatrick or cooked in their own shell and juices on a bbq or hot coals. That was my Dad’s favourite way to enjoy them. What is your vision for the future of your farm? Are there any plans to expand and try new methods in the Farming methods future?
have changed so much over the last 30 years, I still remember helping Dad and Pop chibbling oysters off the old sandstone rocks, they laid out in rock tables then we went to tarred sticks and trays method and now we have moved into slat catching and floating bag cultivation methods.
My vision plan for my farm is happening. We are always expanding on the water and have just purchased leases up on the Macleay, so we can hopefully sell oysters 12 months of the year! We have also just launched a couple of oyster carts, the first of its kind on the Mid North Coast. These can be for weddings, birthdays, corporate functions, Xmas parties, engagement parties etc or for people who want something different and unique, a showstopper of live shucked oysters at their next function. I’ve also got some exciting news that I’m hoping to announce it in 2025.
Normally out on the water early - it’s magic out there before the wind picks up. We would either harvest a load of oysters to send away that day, or pick some year younger oysters up to run through the grader, resize and thin out. There’s always something different to do each week, it’s enjoyable.
one of the cleanest rivers in NSW, the headwaters are pristine rainforests and we have no huge industry. There’s obviously been problems the last few years, like that 2021 flood - I hope I never see one like that again.. watching millions and millions of dollars worth of oysters washed out to sea. Then we had a problem with sewage spills with the council's infrastructure not able to handle the volume of population we are growing to, but both parties are working together to improve it. Weather and farming is just part of the game, it's why farmers are a tough and resilient lot.
Oyster farming is heavily influenced by the environment. How do you manage and adapt to changes in the weather, water quality and other natural factors?
Oysters are known to be excellent for the environment because they filter water. How else does the farm contribute to the health of the local ecosystem?
Anyone can order my oysters in season, just get in touch with us via our Facebook page Tunstead Oysters. I do sell to locals every Friday afternoon at Camp Jordan’s in Port or the Hastings Hotel in Wauchope 3-5.30pm. I love farming, love talking about it and I truly love this industry, growing really world class oysters.
We are pretty lucky on the Hastings River that it’s

method and now we have moved into slat catching and floating bag cultivation methods. All our oysters are still wild caught like they were 150 years ago, but we’re now using easier methods to catch them. What does a typical day look like on the oyster farm?
Where can we find your oysters, find out more or get in touch?

IMAGINE A free, safe and accessible OCEAN POOL
Port Macquarie Ocean Pool Community Project Update In recent weeks, our Committee has met with Council and is undertaking further project studies and reviews as part of the Planning Proposal process. Here’s a snapshot of what’s been happening…
Community chat with Mike Reid (former Ironman Director) Why an Ocean Pool for Port Macquarie?
Who would use the pool?
So many people love the coast but are afraid to swim in the ocean because the surf is too rough, so they don’t visit the beach. An ocean pool would give many people (who don’t swim now) access to a safe place to swim.
Sporting groups – they are positive about an ocean pool because it creates another training venue. Think about the Surf Lifesaving nippers, the Swim clubs too.
Secondly, I’ve seen the positive impact on tourism that Ocean pools have, for example the pool in Forster is immensely popular with visiting families and we would enjoy similar growth here. It would be a nice amenity for the town.
Separately, seniors who like a morning swim. An ocean pool will create opportunities for so many in our community, not to mention it would be a great meeting place.
Ecology and Diversity Study Meeting sustainable ecology and biodiversity requirements is a primary focus for the project. Our Committee is currently working through the final Ecology and Biodiversity studies to support the Planning Proposal and create a facility that harmonises with the natural coastal environment. For Planning Approval we need to ensure there are no significant impacts on the ecology and biodiversity of the site. Additionally, we aim to show how the proposed ocean pool aligns with the objectives outlined in the North Coast Regional Plan.
Pool Boundary Confirmed with PMHC One long standing question has been whether the pool boundary falls entirely within the Port Macquarie-Hastings LGA or extends beyond it, potentially causing jurisdictional challenges. After months of thorough research and collaboration with various government departments and professional surveyors, we are pleased to share that the pool boundary is wholly within the Port Macquarie-Hastings LGA. This has been officially accepted by Council, ensuring smooth progress for the project.
Council Invited to Collaborate in Traffic and Parking Following their review of the project’s initial recommendations, Council has requested a more comprehensive Traffic and Parking study. This is a positive step forward, and we’ve invited Council to collaborate with us on a precinct-wide review. Together, we aim to develop a cohesive local strategy that benefits the entire community.
Update with Leslie Williams MP On 6 December we met with Local Member for Port Macquarie, Leslie Williams, to provide an update on our progress. Leslie remains a long term supporter and appreciated the briefing while offering her assistance where needed.
Dive In and Show Your Support! We need your support to help make Port Macquarie Ocean Pool a reality. Stay tuned for more project updates and details on how you can be involved. Let’s show our community leaders how much we want an ocean pool in Port Macquarie!

SHAPING THE FUTURE OF PORT M ACQUARIE HAS TINGS:

Entering his third term of Council, the Mayor is keen to build on the region’s success stories. From prioritising critical infrastructure like roads, footpaths, and parks to fostering a “cando” culture within the Council. His leadership is focused on influencing the long-term success of our region, helping to drive innovation, sustainability and liveability. Congratulations on becoming Mayor! What are some of the initiatives and ideas you are excited to bring to Council over the next four years? Thank you. It’s an incredible honour to serve as Mayor, and I’m deeply grateful for the community’s trust. I feel fortunate to be able to build on the achievements of the last Council term with a focus on the delivery of core

Our region has faced so much over the past few years with natural disasters. As a community, what is the biggest lesson we can take moving forward? What stood out to me during the floods was how our community came together like never before. Everyone was exhausted, but we pulled through - stronger and more connected. Moving forward, we’re looking closely at our strategic planning to further enhance our already well-coordinated emergency responses. Recently, I took the initiative to meet with local emergency service leaders to ensure we’re as prepared as possible for the future. That means focusing not just on our immediate response to disasters, but also on being better planned to support the allocation of emergency personnel and position our assets in locations that best serve our growing region. What are you most passionate about achieving during this coming term? As a Council, we must stay focused on laying down the infrastructure we need now and in the future. Our economy and the vibrancy of the area depend on this for long-term success. I am also committed to ensuring everyone feels genuinely considered and engaged in our strategic planning processes. While we invest significant resources beyond core services, I

fact, they can sometimes be hesitant to make requests. So, I want to check in with them regularly to ensure we’re aligned on priorities. In my experience, it’s not always about the big-ticket items. It could be micro issues that mean the most to them - like tidying up a garden or installing a roadside guardrail.
Reiterating my earlier point about community engagement, I’m passionate about meeting people where they live. I want to visit every part of our LGA, giving all residents the chance to ask questions and share their thoughts in a setting that’s comfortable and accessible to them.
I look forward to highlighting the issues they raised and working closely with the CEO and staff to inform decisions that genuinely benefit these communities.
I recently connected face-to-face with members of our regional communities. I thoroughly enjoyed listening to the great ideas and diverse perspectives during our visit to Comboyne, Lorne, Rollands Plains and Long Flat. These conversations were highly constructive, offering valuable insight into the priorities and challenges faced by residents in our rural communities.
Over the past decade, I have witnessed Port Macquarie Hastings Council mature significantly in how it approaches planning. Looking back to when I started, I can confidently say we are in a much stronger position today. In my first term, I was critical of Council because we needed to do better, but I am proud to see how far we’ve come. That maturity has softened my stance, as I now see the considerable progress we have made.

I want to help create a stronger, more resilient region, and I am passionate about fostering partnerships that extend beyond our boundaries.
A key part of this progress has been our recent investment in strategic planning matters - particularly around transport and traffic solutions. I want to applaud the Council for its Integrated Transport Plan, developed in collaboration with the NSW Government with valuable input from our community. This plan is vital for reducing congestion, improving connectivity, and ensuring our transport systems can keep pace with our growing region, both now and for generations to come. It’s an exciting time for us, and I’m confident we’re moving in the right direction. What are some other ways you hope to make a difference as Mayor?
Being collaborative and strategic is the key to building a solid foundation for success. I want to help create a stronger, more resilient region, and I am passionate about fostering partnerships that extend beyond our boundaries. Instead of competing as individual LGAs, we need to be more collaborative in our approach. Having spoken with the Mayors of Coffs Harbour, Bellingen, Nambucca, and Kempsey, we collectively agreed on the need to 24 GREATER PORT MACQUARIE focus
work together to address shared challenges like infrastructure, waste management, and traffic congestion.
Together, we represent a significant population of over 300,000 people across a two-hour stretch. This offers an opportunity to attract greater attention and funding from other levels of government. By working as a united front, we can address common challenges and ensure no community falls through the cracks. You often speak about the community taking on some leadership responsibilities. What do you mean by this? I believe leadership does not and should not just come from Council - it also comes from within our community. I really want to encourage community groups and organisations to step up and take the lead in areas where they see opportunities or gaps.
character of the Port Macquarie Hastings Region? It is the ultimate coastal lifestyle, where we are surrounded by the sea on one side and our amazing hinterland on the other. We are fortunate to have it all - rainforests, rivers, beaches, and pastoral land. Just as importantly, we have a community united by a desire to preserve its unique charm and ensure sensible, sustainable planning for the future. We’ve seen how collaboration can shape our direction - residents contributing their ideas to the Integrated Transport Plan, business owners joining together to strengthen local industries, and community groups helping guide developments that reflect our shared values.
By working together and sharing responsibilities, we can create a more sustainable future without putting undue pressure on rates and other resources.
As Mayor, I see our future in that spirit of teamwork and trust. By encouraging everyone to bring their voice to the table, we’ll continue to grow in a way that honours our heritage, amplifies our strengths, and provides a legacy of opportunity for the generations that follow. Together, we can meet change with confidence and creativity, setting a course that inspires connection, stewardship, and a genuine sense of belonging.

Tell us about the use of innovative frameworks such as the Australian Business Excellence Framework (ABEF). How has it contributed to the Council’s progress and shaped its future priorities? My leadership philosophy has always been centred around helping staff reach their full potential and fostering a culture of continuous improvement. After I was able to fully settle into the role, I introduced the Australian Business Excellence Framework (ABEF) which is designed to empower staff to better utilise their skills, be more strategic, monitor performance and strive for excellence in all aspects of our activities. The ABEF is just one example of how I hope my leadership has brought and will continue to bring meaningful change to this organisation. This structured plan has enhanced individual performance while ensuring our organisation remains sustainable and adaptable to the ever-changing needs of our stakeholders and community. Through this framework, I have focused on creating consistent performance and delivering for our community. I also strongly believe in the ‘7th Generation Principle’ in my decision-making. This means that every decision we make needs to be considered carefully for future generations. I am delighted that this has started to become 26 GREATER PORT MACQUARIE focus
embedded in our organisation. Throughout my 25-plus years as a CEO, I have balanced three key elements in each organisation that I’ve served: good governance, good strategy, and good operations. This ensures we do not put all our energy into one aspect, at the expense of the other. In the long-term, this will pay dividends for the organisation and the community. With the release of the Annual Report and the State of our Region Report, we have much to celebrate. Which standout projects or stories have significantly impacted our community members’ lives over the past three years?
These upgrades have enhanced road safety, improved flood resilience, and strengthened connectivity for our communities. This program is a foundation for future transport reform, setting the stage for even greater outcomes in the years ahead.
Another standout is the $111 million Ocean Drive Duplication project. As the largest capital investment in road infrastructure in Major projects our region, this project like the Cowarra will significantly improve connections between Port Water Supply Scheme Macquarie, Lake Cathie, and the Thrumster Bonny Hills, Laurieton, Wastewater Scheme and Kew. decade and beyond.
The past three years have been transformative for Port Macquarie-Hastings, marked by achievements that have made a tangible difference in people’s lives. One milestone I’m particularly proud of is completing the Fixing Country Bridges Program. With more than $20 million invested across three levels of government, we replaced 13 ageing timber bridges with resilient concrete structures.
Securing our water future is another priority where we’ve made significant progress. Major projects like the Cowarra Water Supply Scheme and the Thrumster Wastewater Scheme are laying the groundwork to support our region’s growth over the next decade and beyond. These schemes will provide direct servicing for an additional 7,000 homes across the LGA and indirectly cater for a further 3,000 via in-fill development across Port Macquarie.
Equally important is our investment in public spaces that bring people together and promote health and inclusivity. From upgrades at Bain Park in Wauchope and Kew Main Street, to the improvements at the North Shore, we’re creating spaces that are accessible, safe, and inviting for all. Beyond physical infrastructure, we’ve placed a strong emphasis on community engagement and more effective storytelling. By fostering open, honest, and engaging communication, we’re building trust and ensuring every interaction reflects our commitment to being responsible and transparent. It’s remarkable to see how far we’ve come. These projects not only highlight what we’ve achieved but also the exciting future ahead for our region. The future does look bright for Port Macquarie-Hastings. What excites you the most, and why should residents share in this enthusiasm? The future of Port Macquarie-Hastings is filled with opportunity, and I am most excited about the steps we are taking to shape a connected, sustainable, and thriving community for generations to come. Together, we’ve laid the groundwork for transformational projects that will improve how we live, work, and play. The Integrated
Whether it’s new sporting fields like those at Rainbow Beach or future improvements to sporting facilities across the region, we’re ensuring everyone has spaces to come together and thrive.
Transport Plan is set to ease congestion and strengthen our transport network, focusing on key hotspots like Wrights and Lake Roads. Projects like the Beach 2 Beach Pathway are creating vibrant spaces for pedestrians and cyclists, with over 11 kilometres of continuous pathway set to connect our communities.
Our focus on fostering community wellbeing through infrastructure also excites me. Whether it’s new sporting fields like those at Rainbow Beach or future improvements to sporting facilities across the region, we’re ensuring everyone has spaces to come together and thrive. Safeguarding our environment is equally critical, and our Koala Recovery Strategy and invasive species management efforts reflect our commitment to preserving the natural beauty that makes this area so special. Looking ahead, we’re addressing the challenges of a growing population with initiatives like the Living and Places Strategy and Housing Delivery Plans. By planning for vibrant, well-supported neighbourhoods with the right infrastructure, we’re ensuring we can meet today’s needs
while protecting the character of our region for tomorrow.
As we face an evolving economic landscape, I am inspired by the resilience of our community and the innovation of our local businesses. Together, we’re building economic diversity and strengthening our foundations for a bright, shared future. There’s so much to look forward to, and I encourage all residents to join us on this exciting journey as we continue to make Port Macquarie-Hastings the best place to live, work, and visit. In the words of one of my favourite authors, Helen Keller, “Alone we can do little, together, we can do so much”. I look forward to working with the Mayor and Councillors as we continue to plan and deliver towards achieving our shared vision of becoming the most liveable, sustainable, and innovative place in Australia. I am grateful for the amazing team that I work with, who give their all every day. I hope that the community can appreciate the amazing work they do, too. Together, I look forward to continuing on our journey. Thanks Dr Allen. GREATER PORT MACQUARIE focus 27

ow long have you been doing physie? I have been doing physie since I was two in the lounge room with my sister and was put into the pre-schoolers class when I was three. Miss Kristelle and Miss Kellie have been my teachers ever since I started physie, and have helped me to achieve my dream. What do you love most about the sport? I love physie because I have always loved to dance. I love meeting new girls and dancing amongst girls that I have looked up to for years. It was always my dream to win the cup, so marching out in the Parade of Champions alongside my idols is exactly why I love physie. Favourite routine? There is something so special about the contemporary which

makes it my favourite routine. I love that I am able to use the music to tell a story. I am very excited for next year, moving up to the seniors and learning a new contemporary which I can practice, perfect and perform. How did it feel to have your number called out as the winner? When I heard my number called out, I felt this overwhelming sense of happiness and relief. After working so very hard everyday over so many years to make myself better and to finally see that my hard work has paid off, is very special. What does this win mean to you? It has always been my number one dream to win the cup, but to win the cup at the Opera House with my physie family in the audience just made this win so meaningful to me.

ow long have you done physie? I started when I was 7, so this is my 9th year.
What do you love most about the sport? I love my physie family and all the beautiful girls/ladies I get to spend my time with. Advice for other girls who are thinking of trying physie? Just do it! There is no one stopping you and you will benefit in so many ways! You meet some of your best friends while improving strength, flexibility, fitness and coordination. I love physie and it is a huge part of my life, I wouldn’t have it any other way Favourite routine? My favourite routine every year is the relaxed/contemporary. This year I especially loved the contemporary and the choreography, it suited my style and I could use my personal strengths throughout the routine. How did it feel to have your number called out as the winner? What does this win mean to you? It showed me what I am capable of. I always said I wanted to win the cup and wanted to be a National Champion but truly did not expect it to happen (or at least not anytime soon). When my number was called it was a thought of ‘I did it’.
I love how physie empowers women and we all encourage each other; I love that we make connections with women all over Australia and have beautiful friendships. Favourite routine; I love the swanced! My favourite was the advanced and now the swing/advanced… I love the feeling I get when performing the swanced. Though I do enjoy the dance also!!! This year especially was sooo much fun to perform. Advice for other ladies who are thinking of trying physie. I’d love to encourage women to step out and give physie a try.. meeting beautiful women, forming new friendships whilst having fun and exercising isn’t something you will regret.
When my number was called I dropped my head realising I had finally achieved the dream I had dreamt of and strived so hard for. It was surreal and amazing. What does this win mean to you? It hasn’t always been an easy balance to be able to squeeze physie in for myself, be a Mum to my three boys and take them to all their sports and activities they do.
How did it feel hearing your number called out as the winner? Gosh, this makes me teary thinking back to that moment. I was lucky enough to win many years ago when I was 14 and 15 at Port Macquarie Club with Heather Elderidge.
So in that moment knowing I had achieved my dream whilst juggling life was an incredible feeling. I’m super proud of myself. I am very consistent at giving my all to physie, I’ve been very patient and continued with 110% effort knowing one day I could hold a cup again.
Since I started back as a lady in 2017 at Bonny Hills Physie with Ashley I have really been striving for that incredible feeling of winning nationals.
I am really proud of myself and I love that I inspire other ladies and little girls. That part of the win makes my heart explode, and I really love that. GREATER PORT MACQUARIE focus 31

It broke my heart a little and I gave up on the idea of tattooing for a while and kept painting and exploring more of that medium which was forever changing. At the end of 2009 I had drawn a tattoo design for my good friend and when he got that tattooed the guys at that studio had asked if I was interested in starting an apprenticeship. H
i Emma. Can you share your journey into tattoo artistry and what inspired you to start tattooing?
Well I suppose I was always a really arty kid, forever drawing, painting or hoarding paper scraps to craft something. It's definitely been my relaxing outlet since I can remember. In high school I had decided tattooing was for me and it had become my goal. At 16 I was feeling a bit brave and took some drawings
I'm so glad I went for it and it was a bit of a journey to get past the nerves and actually start tattooing my friends for practice.
I am forever grateful to my mentor Tony Fel, for taking a chance on the awkward shy arty kid, and appreciate the time and care he put into the way he taught me. I know not everyone gets that kind of apprenticeship. How would you describe your personal style or artistic approach to tattooing? I love to work across many different styles but neo traditional is one of my favourites. Lately I have had a lot of requests for colourful birds and florals in this style which has been so much fun to work on. I also really enjoy black and grey realism. It’s always welcome. When I am drawing available flash, I’m drawing themes that I love and designs I would be happy to wear myself, which makes it all the more rewarding when somebody else enjoys them too and wears them forever. What inspires your tattoo designs? Do you draw inspiration from specific art forms, cultures, or experiences? Some things that have inspired me in general would be nature, birds and animals but also music, movies and pop culture. On the book shelf growing up we had a copy of Norman Lindsay’s favourite etchings. I’d study the way he did his figures and try to recreate in pencil or paint, I didn’t have access to reference photos on the internet at that age so I’d use his art to learn how to draw ladies faces and figures where the shadows would fall which really helped me once I had found my own style. We also had a few Brian Froud books. I am a huge fan of his. I’d say these two were the most influential to me as a young teen. I’ll have to mention Bob Ross also with his happy little trees. There is also an incredibly talented world of tattoo artists out there on social media inspiring all of us to push a little further and try new things. Can you tell us about a piece you’ve created that holds a special meaning or story for you? I think tattoos are very personal and special 38 GREATER PORT MACQUARIE focus
for each client. There are many different reasons someone gets a tattoo, maybe even just for fun. However some of the tattoos that affect me the most on a personal level are tributes for family members and pets! Celebratory tattoos when someone has achieved something great or gotten through a hard time in their life and wants to mark the milestone. I’m honoured to help them bring that to life. Although I am extra stoked everytime someone gets some of my flash. What is the most rewarding aspect of being a tattoo artist? I feel very lucky to be in this industry, I get to support my family and do art for a living. It feels like a very big deal to be doing this for so long and to have people keep coming back all these years for more and bigger projects. I’ve met a lot of lovely people along the way and appreciate them so much for letting me do what I love and for trusting me with their skin and being able to work alongside some talented lovely humans and other artists I’ve met within the industry. Being a tattoo artist also means I can make space for other creative outlets. Like I said I really love to paint, it is just for me and there’s zero pressure. I want everything as colourful as possible, an overload of details and layers! Usually with not much planning just a loose idea and go with the motion until it feels finished. While one of my favourite mediums to use is oils, at the moment I’m mostly using acrylic paints as I have three children so time can be limited. Acrylics are fast drying, and much easier to clean off curious little fingers. Cats and birds are some of my favourite subjects to paint lately, especially roosters and chickens in very bright colours. These ones are especially hard for me to part with. I get very attached to my funky chickens during the painting process. Maybe one day I can exhibit these and let some of my flock go. Every year I say I’m going to make a bit more time to paint, maybe this year will be the year. How do you approach the process of designing a tattoo for a client? Usually the client will send me an idea with a photo reference of the style they are after. And I try to draw something fresh for them
with the information so the design will be unique to each client. Using the iPad for this has made the process a lot easier and quicker. It’s still a lot of late nights drawing but it’s just part of the job. What are some common misconceptions people have about tattooing as an art form?
I want everything as colourful as possible, an overload of details and layers! Usually with not much planning just a loose idea and go with the motion until it feels finished.
piece of advice you’d offer?
Maybe that everything is possible... some tattoos still come with some limitations. Even if the client wants it, some things don’t always work when it comes to design, positions and location, especially with cover ups, and that tattoo artists are rough criminal types! haha
Keep on drawing and build up that portfolio for when you’re ready to start approaching studios. Most tattoo artists are friendly and happy to help give advice you could always reach out to an artist or studio you like. Push yourself out of your comfort zone, try new things, it’s only paper. Something awesome might happen.
What advice would you give to someone considering their first tattoo?
Where can we check out your work or get in touch?
There is no rush, take the time and do some research, every artist tattoos differently, and check out portfolios to find the style that suits who you are best. If you are planning on getting tattooed on holidays just remember you cannot swim for two weeks! Always good to know that one before you get the tattoo!
You can find me hanging with the talented crew at Painted Horse Tattoo in Sovereign Hills, check out their work.
For aspiring tattoo artists, what’s one key
Thanks Emma.

Mid-Life Matters P O W E R , P U R P O S E A N D P L E A S U R E

ho are you, and what drives your passion for helping women in midlife? I’m someone who has walked through the fire of mid-life challenges and come out stronger on the other side. I’ve experienced struggles firsthand: depression, weight gain, insomnia, grief, and navigating life as a single mother of two daughters after my divorce. Those challenges became the catalyst for my personal transformation. Today, I’m a life coach, author of The Awakening Woman, and the creator of the Mid-Life Matters event. My mission is to empower women to embrace mid-life as a time of rediscovery and reinvention, with tools, community, and support to help them thrive. What inspired you to create the Mid-Life Matters event? After hitting rock bottom, I began digging into what was happening in
my life. I was depressed, relying on drugs and alcohol, struggling with weight gain, sleepless nights, and grieving my father’s passing. That moment of despair was a turning point. I discovered that my depression was not only life-related but also tied to mid-life hormonal changes. This connection is often overlooked, even though menopause impacts mental health. I created this event to help women understand these challenges and empower them with tools and a supportive community. What makes it special is our incredible panel of experts - a sexpert, naturopath, physiotherapist, movement specialist, and mindfulness coach - all working together to inspire and inform women on their journey. Your book, The Awakening Woman, sounds like a powerful tool for navigating life. What can readers expect from it? The Awakening Woman is a guide to navigating life
with grace and self-awareness. I share practical tools and exercises that helped me shift from feeling stuck to living a fulfilled and joyful life. My goal is to empower people to reclaim their identity and rediscover the magic of their life. What are some of the biggest changes women face in mid-life? Mid-life is a profound transition. Many women are navigating dating after divorce, dealing with empty nests, or caring for aging parents and vagina care … yes we are going there! These changes, coupled with the impact of menopause, can leave women feeling invisible and overwhelmed. I’m here to remind them that mid-life isn’t an ending - it’s a powerful new beginning. With the right tools and support, these challenges can become a catalyst for rediscovery and reinvention.

hen flying into Lord Howe Island, I was instantly awe struck by its beauty. True to its reputation, I felt like I had been transported to Jurassic Park as you soon encounter exotic bird life and traverse through the prevalent Kentia Palm trees. With over 130 recorded species of birds on the island, and 14 species of seabirds breeding in the hundreds and thousands, you quickly become immersed in their choir. The sea cliffs looming over you against the azure, blue lagoon echo Hawaii, which is not surprising given it similarly has a volcanic origin as a remnant of a now extinct shield volcano, dating back 7 million years. Our Four Day Itinerary Ahead of our visit to Lord Howe Island we had planned an itinerary for our four-night stay at Pinetrees Lodge. We had envisaged days filled with sightseeing, snorkelling, local walks to visit must-see beaches, and dining on delicious local produce. What resulted was an adventure with just the right balance of rest, exploration and luxury. Each morning our wait staff greeted us with a varied breakfast and lunch menu for the day, alongside the recommended activities. A favourite of the staff was the banana

Each morning our wait staff greeted us with a varied breakfast and lunch menu for the day, alongside the recommended activities.
Pinetrees Lodge has curated a culinary experience which tantalises the taste buds, and its Executive Chef Al, originally from the Isle of Skye in Scotland showcased his skills in an immersive cooking class. Local kingfish often featured on the menu and Al’s insight into how to simply cook these to perfection we would later apply to our hand delivered BBQ picnic, enjoyed whilst gazing over the lagoon. What a dream! Pinetrees Lodge Boatshed A short stroll from the front entrance of Pinetrees is the boatshed, an abode for yoga, pilates and an afternoon tipple. Drinks can be purchased from the fridge stocked with local favourites. Honesty is the policy here and very soon after arriving at our villa at Pinetrees we were certainly easing into island life. We
helped ourselves to two glasses of Prosecco, only afterwards to realise these were not for common consumption but rather a couple had purchased a bottle, and we had helped ourselves. We soon realised our error and had a laugh whilst joining our new friends as we admired the glorious sunset. Yoga and pilates at the boatshed became a morning ritual for Mum and I, our instructor Julia carefully guiding us through the various postures encouraging us to be at one with the surrounding landscape. It was a lovely opportunity to take a moment to reflect and be surrounded by various birds in song and to also connect with our fellow guests. It is a local ritual to hand feed the fish, and we later learned it is best to be out of the water when feeding to not become stuck in sand.

As a special gift to Mum, I arranged for a personal scenic flight out to Balls Pyramid. It was a perfect day, and our pilot Bree helped to ease our nerves as we hit the skies and soared over the island. Measuring an amazing 562 metres in height and 1100 metres in length, Balls Pyramid towers above the ocean and is an impressive sight to circumnavigate whilst spotting local dive boats. You can no longer climb it; however, I did hear impressively that Dick Smith had climbed it. Witnessing
Balls Pyramid and Lord Howe from above was an experience we will never forget and it was extra special to experience it with my Mum.
nearby showing signs of disappearing. It was listed as a World Heritage site in 1982 and allows for only 400 visitors at a time, which has helped to preserve the island’s uniqueness, and sustain the population of its unique bird, marine and plant life.
Sustaining the Uniqueness and Beauty of Lord Howe
Local initiatives led by the staff at Pinetrees Lodge, include the certification of the lodge as carbon neutral under the Climate Active Program of the Australian Government, is a step in the right direction. Denis, Pinetrees Lodge Manager, explained it’s the first fullservice hotel in Australia to gain certification, an achievement worth heralding. All carbon emissions from the business including electricity, freight, food and beverage, transport are calculated and offset.
The appeal of Lord Howe is its central location close to Sydney, not far from the Gold Coast, and just off the coast of Port Macquarie. However, not all will get the chance to experience the wonders of this island paradise with the chain of islands
The Sallywood Swamp Forest Restoration Project, initiated in 2019 with staff out of work during COVID-19, helping to replant this forest in the back paddock, restoring a critically endangered ecological community to the island. These local led programs continue to help restore and preserve the island’s beauty, ensuring future generations can explore all it has to offer. A trip to Lord Howe Island will inspire you, change you, and reconnect you back to nature. Speaking from experience it will leave you wanting to return, and as I’ve learnt along my travels it’s best to plan well ahead to ensure you don’t miss this rare opportunity. Palate with LOU PERRI
FROM THE STUNNED MULLET
T
he sun is shining (hopefully), the car is packed to the brim, or perhaps there’s a mad and sweaty dash to the airport. Rooms are booked, your mobile home is attached by trailer or maybe a patch of grass is reserved for your tent when you reach your destination. Whichever way you choose to play it, there’s no hiding the happy fact that a long-awaited holiday (or surprisingly spontaneous holiday) has finally arrived! Right here and right now, it’s a rite of passage. Come January, leave is booked, routines are thrown to the wind and it is time for serious down time, family time, chill time, or even action time if that’s what floats your boat. A holiday is one of life’s punctuation marks. A pause, time to regroup, revive, refresh. Time to tap out and unplug (except for the GPS of course!). As we get a little older, this time becomes incredibly precious. After all these holiday memories, of being together somewhere that isn’t your normal, every day surrounds, are truly the memories that stay with us, and make the hugest impressions on our kids. That really is the true beauty of the holiday concept. The most awesome side effect of putting oneself on the outside of one’s comfort
Hiday
YOUR WAY zone (even if only a little, or potentially a lot), is the ability you suddenly have of being able to make the magical moments that memories are made of happen. Perhaps it is just a kind of blissful state that you reach when the random factors and risks that come with exploring the unexplored, seem to magically come together. Kind of like getting lost in the bush and then chancing upon a most excellent pub in which to revive yourself. “What a great adventure” you think. And the beer tastes extra delicious, when you’ve had to go through a bit of an ordeal to get it. Holidays are a somewhat safe way to take a risk and wind up with a reward. You can Trip Advisor till the cows come home but ultimately everything’s subjective and someone else’s nirvana might easily be your version of hell. Chance upon that magic combination though and you will arrive home glowing from head to toe with fond memories that last a lifetime. Holidays are a way for adults to play, to hark back to that childish excitement in discovering and learning new things. Come on, who doesn’t get a kid in a candy store feeling even just slightly upon checking in and unlocking the door to your new digs? And that first morning of waking up in a new place…. the sheer excitement of what to do where to go, the need to explore and check
things out! Admittedly age and the factor of holidaying with little kids seems to add a glaze of exhaustion to the proceedings, but the joy and the freedom of the new frontier still remains. It doesn’t matter where you go, a campsite down the road or a jaunt over the ocean to the other hemisphere, a holiday is a holiday. A chance to unwind, rewind, ponder the present, forget the past or simply sleep and eat a lot (if you’re lucky). Even if you book the same place at the same time every year and try to avoid all pitfalls of the potluck approach, the basic concept remains the same. Rest, rejuvenation, quality time with the most important people in your life and a different take on life, away from the mundane and everyday realities of home. Sometimes those most mundane of moments are the ones we remember too – card games on a rainy afternoon, mozzie down by the river, sunday drives down the highway….it really is all about spending time with those most important and it doesn’t have to always look like a postcard. Home may be where the heart is, but holidays are for the head – kind of a way to hit the reset button. Whatever way you holiday - may it be a chance to stop and breathe, laugh and learn…. and yes, eat and sleep as much as possible! GREATER PORT MACQUARIE focus 55

person, so she looked after the graphic design, whilst I handled sales and production. You are a familiar face around Port Macquarie and Lake Cathie, tell us about your ties to the community and sporting clubs.
I was born in Sydney and moved to Sawtell when I was 11. When I finished school I I got to know a lot of people being the face trained as a chef, which led me to Sydney of Constable for 20 years, but I’ve always and then to South East Asia. I spent about 7 loved sport, so it was easy to get involved years over there cooking, mainly in Indonesia in that. We had 3 years on the island, and our daughter Matilda was born there, so it was a special time for us. We returned to Australia in 2004 and I was keen to find a more family friendly career; so, when the opportunity to buy Constable Screen Printing & Embroidery came up, I jumped at the chance. Angela is a creative
But I think my greatest community passion started around 4 years ago when I was invited to join a bunch of blokes for a men’s workshop. I thought it was brilliant and something that more men could benefit from by improving their mental wellness and making smarter choices for themselves and
their families. And so, Self Seen was born. I jumped on board immediately to help set the structure so we could spread the word and to give genuine support for men in our region. Self Seen is a fantastic initiative, congratulations mate, you’ve done some great work there. What’s on the horizon for Self Seen in 2025? We’ve recently found a space for the Self Seen Wellness Hub, which is on track to be fully functional in January. Ben Cudmore, the team and I have worked hard to get this space ready and we’re really keen to see it up and running. It wouldn’t have been possible without the generous help of the Hastings community, and I’m just blown away by how generous and supportive they have been. Lastly, what’s your favourite thing about Lake Cathie? That’s hard as I don’t think it’s just one thing. The lake and the surrounding beaches are awesome but it’s the culture of this little community which I think I find the most enjoyable, we can go to Lake Cathie Tavern for dinner and raffles on the Friday night and at the table having a beer with us is a local doctor, a builder, a painter, a bin collector and a bloke that used to dress up as Big Dog! We all enjoy each other’s company, so for me that’s village living at its best. Thanks Greg. GREATER PORT MACQUARIE focus 61

POWER Charli Power is a local singer songwriter who has one of those voices that can give you chills! She writes powerful lyrics and has a knack for altering the mood of a room when she starts to sing, and we just know she’s one to watch.
H
i Charli, can you tell us a bit about yourself? How did you first get into music?
I’m a young creative from Port Macquarie with a big passion for music! I’ve been singing for as long as I can remember and have always used music as a way to express myself. School never really clicked for me, but I loved music, english, and art because they allowed me to explore creativity and storytelling without a right or wrong answer. What you create could mean something different to everyone. When I was about 11, I became obsessed with Grace VanderWaal after seeing her perform her original song I Don’t Know My Name on America’s Got Talent. Inspired, I begged my parents for a ukulele, taught myself to play, and started turning my writings into lyrics. A few years later, I got a guitar for Christmas, and spent almost every day learning chords, writing songs, and figuring out how to transform my lyrics into 62 GREATER PORT MACQUARIE focus
melodies.
A few years later, I got a guitar for Christmas, and spent almost every day learning chords, writing songs, and figuring out how to transform my lyrics into melodies.
Even as a little kid, music was central to my life. One of my earliest memories is my Dad rocking me to sleep while singing Free Loop by Daniel Powter on repeat. If I couldn’t sleep, I’d make him pull up the official music video on his computer so we could sing it together before bed. Music has always been my constant and has the power to put me into my own little world, no matter my mood. How would you describe your musical style? Are there any particular genres or artists that influence your sound? My musical style is pretty versatile and I
wouldn’t really box myself into a single genre, but I definitely draw a lot of inspiration from country and folkpop music. An artist I really look up to is Noah Kahan - he has such a beautiful way of telling stories and conveying his emotions through his music. I also sing a fair bit of R&B soul and jazz and am particularly inspired by Amy Winehouse. What inspired you to start writing your own songs? Music has always been my safe space where I can process my feelings and understand myself more. For my ‘sadder’ songs, it’s like turning pain into art. It’s a way of making
sense of things that felt senseless at the time. I love how you can transform a time of hurt and lived experience into something beautiful and meaningful. I’ve always been so in awe and grateful for artists who have been able to convey the exact feeling I’ve had through their music, and I wanted to be able to do the same for others. Music has this incredible way of making people feel less alone, and that’s always been my goal with writing to create something that resonates. Where do you draw inspiration for your lyrics? A lot of my lyrics are inspired by personal I can tell you experiences I’ve had. My creative process is quite special to me. Music has always been my emotional outlet, and many of my songs have started off as journal entries. Writing lets me pour out my thoughts, and from there, I often find lines that evolve into lyrics. I try to keep the process organic and let the emotions guide me rather than forcing it. Do you perform your music live? If so, what’s your favourite part of being on stage? Are there any upcoming projects, songs, or performances that you’re particularly excited about? Right now, I’m not performing live as I’m focused on some exciting projects planned for next year that I can’t wait to share soon! In the meantime, I host regular live-
than you think! Stay tuned! Who are your biggest supporters, and how have they helped you on your journey? My biggest supporters have undoubtedly been my family and friends. They’ve always believed in me and my music and I am so grateful for their love and support. One person who made a huge impact on my journey is my high school music teacher, Mr. Heddles. He played such a significant role in building my confidence and helping me believe in myself. If it weren’t for him pushing me out of my comfort zone, I don’t think I’d be as open to sharing my music with others as I am today. His encouragement really made all the difference, so a big thank you to you Heddles!! Are there any collaborations you dream
of, either with local artists or big-name musicians? Dreaming big, I would probably sell my soul to collaborate with Noah Kahan, Bon Iver or Hans Williams. My good friend, Josh Evans, is also an up and coming artist from Sydney and I would love to create something with him one day as well. And the incredible Vinnie Brigante from Melbourne!! There’s too many talented people to pick from haha. What’s next for you as an artist? Do you have long-term goals or dreams you’re working toward? This year has been a turning point for me as an artist. I only really started sharing my music online in January and have been blown away by the response. My focus for next year is to release my music on streaming platforms and start performing live again. One day, I’d love to play at a festival, open for another artist, or even host my own concert! Finally, how can people listen to your music and stay updated on your journey? You can find me on Instagram at @charli. powerrr and TikTok at @chazpowersings. I share most of my original songs on TikTok, where I also host my ‘bedroom concert’ live streams. If you want to stay updated, Instagram is the best place to follow along! Thanks Charlie. PUT THE BUBBLES ON ICE, IT’S THE NEW YEAR BABY!
B
ut not only is it a New Year, it’s 2025 and to me that feels big.
We’re a quarter of a century in, but for many of us Y2K feels like it was just last week… I guess that’s what happens at this time of the year though; we reminisce with friends and family, sharing memories both happy and not so happy and possibly even dare to dream about the future too. For those of us fortunate enough to call Port home, it’s a magical time of the year. It’s true, we may need to share our beaches and favourite coffee shops with a couple of extra (much needed and appreciated) visitors, but there’s nothing quite like the feeling of being at home at this time of the year. Lazy days spent by the pool or at the beach, followed by long summer nights around the BBQ with friends, fresh produce and afternoon siestas are all on high rotation. But all too soon the call of routine and the daily rituals that we all need are back on the agenda. For me as a small business owner, this means getting right back into my seasonal buying trips. There are Spring/Summer Collections to view and commit to, projections and decisions to be made and plans to implement. The face of retail is definitely evolving, and interestingly there is a real shift back
to personal, in store shopping experiences verses the impersonal online shopping phenomena that took over during the COVID era.
A holiday in a regional area without experiencing the small, passionately run, locally owned businesses is like going to the beach and staying in the car.
While of course there will always be a place for online shopping, imagine if you went on holidays to a gorgeous little coastal town and all you could find were empty shopfronts, or worse still large retail chains where you’re required to scan, pack and pay for your own purchases and your only human interaction was with the security person at the door ensuring you didn’t forget to pay for that plastic thing stuck under your arm… sounds like a living nightmare to me.
A holiday in a regional area without experiencing the small, passionately run, locally owned businesses is like going to the beach and staying in the car. You just shouldn’t do it or you’ll miss out on all the fun. I don’t know about you, but for me covering all the little gems hidden within these fabulous regional towns is what travelling in your own backyard is all about. From the magnificent dinners you had, the cocktails you shared, the amazing little hole
in the wall coffee shop you found (yes, I am biased because we do have one of those in our shop) to the gorgeous new dress or earrings you bought at that super sweet boutique you stumbled across, that’s what makes summer holidays memorable.
So as we all reflect on the year that was, and look forward with sweet anticipation to the year ahead; let’s all continue to remain aware of what it is that makes our town special, and it’s not just the magnificent beaches… It’s the people who turn up each and every day and “have a go”. They “have a go” for their families and the community at large and it’s us that need to continue turning up to support them. Last year I ended my January Musing with a callout to enjoy the little things in life over summer. To eat the oysters, drink the bubbles, buy the dress and order that second coffee… this year I can’t help but feel the same way. Except this year I feel like we need to see that suggestion and raise it, because if we don’t… we may just find ourselves sitting in the car at the beach wishing we had. ntroduce yourself and Smash Therapy to our readers... I’m Misti, owner/creator of Smash Therapy PMQ. Smash Therapy PMQ is an indoor recreation venue with a difference - we have three “smash rooms” - providing a safe space where anyone 16+ can go a little wild and break stuff, without cleanup or consequence. This is perfect for a fun activity with friends, a date night, or a group gathering. Aside from the smash rooms, we have a “Splatter Room” - where groups of up to 4 people (ages 3+) can come and unleash their creative side - using paint to decorate a canvas, the walls, and each other! Where did the idea come from? I was looking for ideas for my work Christmas party over a year ago and thought a smash room would be great to release a bit of end of year frustration, however found the closest to us was in

Bago
Bago Maze and Wine continues to bring people together whilst inspiring outdoor adventures and showcasing local wine and produce from the Mid North Coast. This school holidays, as well as exploring the award-winning hedge maze, the team invites you to experience the summer time pop-up field maze. Focus had the pleasure of speaking with landscape architect Ian Mobbs about the exciting initiative opening just in time for summer.
H
i Ian, thanks so much for your time. Tell us a little about the new pop up maze at Bago and the theme for the year?
Thanks Sarah. This year’s pop-up maze is the 7th annual edition. The maze is created by mowing a pattern into a field of sorghum. The pattern and activities change each year. This year’s theme is “Surfing Rainbows!” inspired by the close proximity of so many great surfing beaches in our area. The pattern depicts a series of rainbows colliding to create surfboard shapes, the result is a seriously confusing network of 74 GREATER PORT MACQUARIE focus
paths that will be sure to challenge even the most confident adventurers. Visitors will be given the goal to search for some hidden items…then find their way out. The Field maze will be open from the start of the school holidays through to the end of January. Entry is included with the standard maze admission ticket. Bago is such a great day out with the beauty of the landscape making the experience truly memorable and unique. As well as the maze adventures, what else is on offer at the venue this summer? Our Cellar door is open everyday from 9am to 5pm and we have a coffee bar open from
10am to 3pm where visitors can grab a coffee, cake or cool drink. Our main offering of course, is wine tastings and cheese/ charcuterie platters. We offer our wine tastings on a “paddle” that allows visitors to take their wine away from the bar to sit, relax and enjoy the tastings at their leisure. Our platters include a selection of local and ‘grown on farm’ produce that pair perfectly with our wines. Ian, you are described as being the mastermind behind Bago Maze, having studied landscape architecture and are passionate about all things green! Can you tell us a little about your role within the family business and what inspires
you each day?
It means a lot that other industry professionals appreciated the complexities of the maze design and the positive impact the maze had on our business and the wider tourism industry.
I grew up on the property at Bago and went to school in Wauchope before moving to Canberra to study and work as a landscape architect. Back in the early 2000’s, the Bago Cellar Door was struggling to attract customers as we are a bit off the main route at the end of a gravel road, so we came up with the idea of creating a maze as a drawcard.
I designed the maze in 2006 on a wine theme and we planted the first plants on Christmas day that year. I then left Mum and Dad to look after the maze while I continued to work in Canberra. It wasn’t until 6 years later, in 2012 that we opened the maze. After a slow build up, it eventually proved successful in attracting visitors to our cellar door and completely changed our customer demographic. The success of the
maze allowed me to move back to the farm with my young family in 2018. Since then, I have relieved Dad of maze maintenance duties and have been enhancing the grounds of the property with landscape developments.
I gain great satisfaction from seeing the landscapes and gardens we have built being enjoyed by so many visitors from around the world. Bago was also awarded the coveted 2022 NSW Landscape Architecture Award for Tourism – and the 2022 National Landscape Architecture Award for Small Projects an incredible achievement. Tell us about what this recognition means to you and your family? The family was so proud! I had thought about entering the maze into the awards for a few years but I thought they would just
dismiss the maze as a gimmick. So I was very surprised when I got the first NSW Award. I didn’t even go the award presentation in Sydney as I thought we had no chance. Having won the NSW Award we got to go to the National level. Another surprise! We won that one too! Luckily, I did attend that presentation. It means a lot that other industry professionals appreciated the complexities of the maze design and the positive impact the maze had on our business and the wider tourism industry. For tourists and locals alike who have not had the pleasure of visiting Bago Maze and Wine, what would you say to encourage people to venture out? We are not just another winery, there is something for the whole family to enjoy. Kids, parents, grandparents, couples, singles and groups all have a good time out here… and don’t let the gravel road turn you off. Our most common comment is that “it is well worth the drive!” Find us at 197 Lambs Road, Herons Creek. Thanks Ian. Interview: Sarah Baker. GREATER PORT MACQUARIE focus 75

i Kelsie, thank you for speaking with Focus. Can you please tell us a little about the ethos of the program?
Certainly! Billabong Zoo's Koala Breeding Centre is deeply rooted in conservation, education, and species recovery. For 30 years now, this programme has been dedicated to safeguarding the future of koalas, a species that is facing significant threats from habitat loss, climate change, and disease. Koalas are nocturnal, so they’ll often move around, explore, or snack again before settling in for another sleep. It’s a chill routine, but every part of the day helps keep them healthy and happy.
It really is vital for supporting koalas and the work that Billabong Zoo is doing, and our Adopt a Koala program is such an easy and meaningful way to get involved. When you adopt one of our koalas, you receive an exclusive Koala Biography, Footprint and Adoption Certificate and you know that you are helping cover the costs of their care; things like food, medical treatments, and habitat upkeep. Plus, your support helps fund conservation efforts that go beyond the zoo, like protecting koalas in the wild. What is a typical day like for a koala at Billabong Zoo? A day in the life of a koala at Billabong Zoo? It's all about sleeping, eating and sleeping again!! Koalas aren’t early risers. They wake up slowly, stretching on their favourite branches, while their keepers check in to make sure everything’s perfect. Once they’re awake, it’s time for breakfast; fresh eucalyptus leaves, handpicked by our keepers
just for them. After eating, it’s time for a long nap. Koalas can sleep up to 20 hours a day! So they curl up and snooze in their cozy spots, looking extra cute while doing so. If they’re awake, they might play or explore, climbing branches or jumping
about their home. Sometimes, they also get to meet visitors during one of our daily Koala Encounters. As the day winds down, it’s dinner time; more fresh eucalyptus, prepared just the way they like it. Koalas are nocturnal, so they’ll often move around, explore, or snack again before settling in for another sleep. It’s a chill routine, but every part of the day helps keep them healthy and happy. At Billabong Zoo, they’re well cared for while also playing a key role in conservation efforts as ambassadors for their species.
koalas are the young joeys Rocky and Pebble, who recently celebrated their first birthday and both are turning out to be sweet and curious koalas who love exploring and even getting a bit cheeky and wrestling when they have an audience. Summer holidays are now on and families and children will be flocking to the zoo to get up and close with the animals living here. What will be on offer this summer for visitors to experience? DENTAL
IMPLANTS
ARE THEY RIGHT FOR YOU?
Do you suffer from broken teeth or missing teeth? Dental implants are becoming a popular solution because they are natural, long lasting and a functional solution to a broken smile.
H
aving missing or broken teeth can be a large burden on one’s quality of life. These gaps can affect your bite making it difficult to eat certain foods, speak properly and even affect your confidence and ability to smile. While dentures and bridges are good options for replacing missing teeth, in some cases they can lead to soft tissue trauma, be hard to adapt to and cause damage to adjacent teeth. What are dental implants? Dental implants are a great “fixed option” to restoring missing or heavily broken teeth. The implant procedure involves the surgical placement of a titanium fixture into the jawbone, underneath the gum where the tooth root is missing. This acts as a foundation, on to which artificial crowns and bridges and even denture can be secured. Are dental implants the best option for me? While dental implants are exceptional substitutes to missing teeth in most cases, there are some pre-requisites to consider before undergoing this treatment:
Good gum health – while implants do not undergo decay like normal teeth, they are still susceptible to gum disease and can fail in patients that have poor periodontal stability. Good systemic health – implant placement is a surgical procedure and requires cutting the gum and securing the implant into the bone. For this reason, patients who have certain medical conditions or take medications that affect the normal wound healing response are not advised to undergo this procedure: • Severe cardiovascular disease • History of head/neck radiation • Uncontrolled diabetes mellitus • Osteoporosis and/or other bone disorders Good bone quality – the success of implant placement is dictated by the amount and quality of the bone available. With the loss of teeth the bone level often drops away; this needs to be assessed by the clinician prior to planning an implant, to decide whether any bone grafting may be necessary before going
ahead with the procedure. Good oral hygiene and ongoing maintenance - the longevity of an implant requires meticulous cleaning, flossing and regular dental visits to ensure the bone and gums of the implant remain stable. If you or a loved one is suffering from missing or broken teeth why not call for a consultation and 3D x-ray to assess if this treatment is the right solution for your dental health. It is an alarming statistic that 2 out of 3 Australians will be diagnosed with skin cancer by the age of 70. Port Skin Cancer Doctors are here to encourage all adults to have regular skin checks to ensure your skin’s health this summer. Focus speaks with the wonderful team of nurses at the practice about the importance of protecting our skin as we age.
W
hy are regular skin checks so important for early detection of skin cancer, and how do you educate patients about the importance of these checks during their visits? Regular skin checks are crucial for early detection of skin cancer, because they allow for the identification of changes in the skin that may signify underlying issues. For example, melanoma and non-melanoma skin cancers are highly treatable when caught early. Regular checks help identify suspicious moles or changes in the skin that may require further investigation. Education about what to look for in changing lesions is important for patients so they know when to book an urgent appointment, in between their regular checks. Can you describe a situation where you identified a potential skin issue during a routine skin check, and how did it impact the patient's treatment plan or outcome? We regularly find skin cancers very early, before the patient is aware of its presence. This is then referred to the treating doctor who is able to timely treat the cancer in its earliest stages, resulting in the best outcome for the patient. In a clinic setting, teamwork is essential. why do you believe it’s essential for long-term skin health? Promoting sunburn prevention is vital for long-term skin health as it helps reduce the risk of skin cancer, premature ageing, and other skin conditions associated with UV exposure. GRAYCE GERKE
Exercising Safely: Key Tips for Women
FROM WOMEN’S HEALTH PHYSIO/ PHYSIO COLLECTIVE
1. Focus on Core Strength and Stability
A
s the New Year kicks off, many of us feel inspired to set new fitness goals. Whether you're looking to get back into a regular exercise routine, push your limits or simply become more active, the possibilities are endless. However, it's crucial to remember that a successful and sustainable exercise routine isn’t just about strength or endurance - it’s about health, and for women, one often-overlooked aspect of overall wellbeing is pelvic health. The pelvic region plays an essential role in many aspects of daily life, from posture and movement to bladder function and sexual health. The Impact of Exercise on Women's Health For many women, pelvic health issues are something they may not think about until a problem arises. From pregnancy and childbirth to ageing, hormonal shifts, and lifestyle choices, a variety of factors can impact the pelvic region. Whether it’s discomfort, fatigue, or tension, these issues can manifest in ways that affect your ability to enjoy physical activity, limiting your progress or enjoyment. When it comes to exercise, certain activities, especially high-impact or strenuous exercise, can place added strain on the pelvic region. It’s important to recognise that your pelvic health
82 GREATER PORT MACQUARIE focus
A strong core isn’t just about flat abs - it’s about creating a solid foundation for all your movements. Your core muscles include not only your abdominal muscles but also the muscles of your back and pelvis. By strengthening your core, you help support the rest of your body during exercise, which reduces unnecessary strain on your lower back and pelvic area. Incorporate exercises that focus on overall core stability, such as planks, bridges, and controlled abdominal work. 2. Engage in Low-Impact Activities Low-impact exercises, such as walking, swimming, cycling, or yoga, are excellent alternatives that still offer great cardiovascular benefits while reducing pressure on your body. If you're new to exercise or returning after a break, starting with these gentler forms of movement can help build a solid foundation before moving to more demanding activities. 3. Slowly Increase Intensity Instead of jumping right into a tough workout routine, take a gradual approach, allowing your body time to adjust. Start with lighter exercises and build up intensity over time, focusing on quality and form rather than pushing through exhaustion. Remember, consistency is key to achieving long-term results, so pace yourself for sustainability. 4. Listen to Your Body One of the best things you can do is simply pay attention to what your body is telling
you. If you feel any unusual discomfort or pain during or after exercise, it's essential to listen and respond. Common discomforts like pelvic tension or aches in the lower back may be subtle signs of strain, and if ignored, they can build up over time. Rest, recovery, and adjusting movements accordingly are important for ensuring you don’t push too far too fast. 5. Warm Up and Cool Down Stretching and warming up before a workout, and cooling down afterward, are essential steps in any exercise routine. Focus on gentle stretches that open up the hips and lower back, areas that are often under stress during exercise. Simple yoga poses, such as cat-cow, hip openers, and gentle twists, can be very effective in helping to release tension and increase flexibility, while also keeping your pelvic area relaxed and mobile. 6. Practice Proper Posture and Alignment Good posture isn’t just about looking poised - it’s about how your body moves and functions. Proper alignment supports your muscles, joints, and organs, reducing unnecessary strain, so make sure your spine, hips, and pelvis are aligned correctly. Avoid slouching or hunching, and try to keep your body in a neutral position. By focusing on a balanced routine that includes core strengthening, low-impact exercises, gradual intensity increases, and good posture, you can exercise safely and effectively while keeping your body in top shape. By respecting the role of your pelvic health in every movement, you can achieve your fitness goals while staying strong, active, and injury-free for years to come.

Post-Holiday Detox for Your Skin: A Q&A Guide
hy does our skin need a detox after the holidays? Late nights, indulgent meals, skipping skincare routines, excess sugar, alcohol, and stress can all lead to dehydration, dullness, breakouts, and inflammation. A detox helps reset your skin, restoring its natural glow and health. What are the first steps to detoxing your skin? Start by returning to the basics: Double Cleansing: Use an oil-based cleanser to remove makeup and sunscreen, followed by a water-based cleanser for sweat and impurities. Hydration: Focus on rehydration by drinking water and using hydrating serums like those with hyaluronic acid (B5) and a hydrating moisturiser. Sun Protection: Reinstate daily sunscreen to protect your skin from further damage. Can diet really affect our skin? Absolutely! What you eat impacts your skin significantly. Over the holidays, we tend to consume more sugar, salt, and processed foods, which can trigger inflammation and dehydration. To detox: Increase Antioxidants: Include foods rich in vitamins A, C, and E, such as berries, spinach, and nuts, to combat free radicals. Hydrate from Within: Drink plenty of water and herbal teas, and consider adding lemon for an extra detoxifying boost. Are there any quick fixes for dull skin? While there’s no magic wand, these steps can quickly refresh your skin: Exfoliate Gently: Use a chemical exfoliant like glycolic or lactic acid to slough off dead skin
cells. We love the gentle AHA/BHA chemical serum from The Skincare Company, which we stock in clinic and on our website. Home Peptide Mask: Applying a hydrating mask at home can do wonders for skin glow. They dont need to be expensive: but don’t use supermarket ones which can be full of chemicals (and not the good ones). How can we repair damage caused by holiday indulgences? The goal is to support your skin barrier, reduce inflammation, and target damage caused by sun exposure and late nights. Here’s how: Gentle Chemical Peels: A light chemical peel can exfoliate dead skin cells, promote hydration, and improve sun damage. It can ‘reset’ your skin and achieve a brighter, smoother complexion. Use Barrier-Repair Products: Look for moisturisers with ceramides, niacinamide, and squalane to replenish and protect your skin. Incorporate Antioxidants: Products with vitamin C, green tea extract, or resveratrol combat oxidative stress from alcohol and sugar. Peptide Sheet Mask: Try The Skincare Company’s Peptide Sheet Mask, available at our clinic for $35. It’s an excellent way to hydrate, plump, and rejuvenate tired skin. Retinol: A gentle retinol can help with fine lines, uneven texture, and acne caused by holiday stress. Start slow if you’re a beginner.
and skin types, making it an excellent choice for hydration and refreshing tired, dull skin. Chemical Peels: For a deeper reset, professional grade peels can target pigmentation, sun damage, and texture issues. LED Light Therapy: Red light reduces inflammation and boosts collagen, while blue light tackles breakouts. Skin Boosters: Our team love these hydration treatments to improve skin’s radiance and elasticity from within. What role does sleep play in skin detox? During deep sleep, your body boosts blood flow to the skin repairing damage from the day. Aim for 7-9 hours of quality sleep which can be enhanced by using a silk pillowcase and applying a rich nighttime moisturiser or sleeping mask. How long does it take to see results from a skin detox? You may notice small changes, like reduced puffiness and better hydration within a few days. For more significant results, it may take 4-6 weeks, as this aligns with your skin’s natural renewal cycle. Maintaining the glow post-detox is all about consistency. Stick to a simple, effective skincare routine. Protect your skin daily with SPF - rain or shine. Keep your body hydrated and your diet nutrient-rich. Consider monthly professional treatments to stay ahead of skin concerns.
What professional treatments can help with post-holiday skin recovery? In-clinic treatments such as: Venus Glow: This gentle, water-based skin resurfacing treatment deeply cleanses and rejuvenates the skin. It’s suitable for all ages GREATER PORT MACQUARIE focus 85

WHAT MIGHT BE YOUR NEW YEAR INTENTION?
If not, can you replace them with a better feeling thought.
January can be the ideal time to take a few minutes to pause and ponder on what you might like to promote and nurture for yourself and your life in 2025.
SPEAK KINDLY TO YOURSELF.
Setting a New Year intention is about getting clear on what you want and then aligning your thoughts, your actions and your energy, to help you get there. A FEW TIPS: Choose a positive intention, that is achievable. Write down your intention. Maybe put sticky note reminders on the fridge, bathroom mirror, on your computer screen, or as a background on your phone. Do a little each day/week, so that your intention becomes part of your regular and familiar routine.
SCATTER A LITTLE MINDFULNESS INTO EACH DAY. Maybe slow down a little more often. As you walk from one room to another, or from your car to the office, or through the supermarket. Slow down as you eat. Slow down as you sip your tea or coffee. BREATHE MORE MINDFULLY. Maybe pause 3-5 times a day for one minute. Follow each inhale. Follow each exhale. As you do so, relax your shoulders, relax your jaw and relax your forehead. LISTEN MORE MINDFULLY. SPEAK MORE MINDFULLY.
JOURNAL ONCE A WEEK. About your wins, your strengths, or what you appreciate about yourself, others, the community. BE OPEN TO EMBRACE CHANGE. BE MORE OK WITH WHAT IS. Let it be. FIND THE POSITIVE. REACH OUT AND ASK FOR HELP MORE WHEN NEEDED. What might be your intention/s for the New Year? I ALSO HAVE MY PATREON PAGE An online platform with monthly content. CHLOE MCGREAL STORY
Chloe McGreal started The Port Macquarie Ladies Club group on Facebook after moving to Port Macquarie and feeling a bit isolated because she didn’t know anyone yet. The group took on a life of its own and has grown to nearly 2000 members, with regular catch ups happening within the community every week!
hloe
McGreal
H
i Chloe, can you tell us about the initial inspiration behind starting The Port Macquarie Ladies Club and how it felt to see the group grow so quickly? It was all a bit of a whim to be honest - I had moved to Port just 3 weeks before I started the Facebook group and outside of my parents, I knew nobody. I started the group with the initial idea to bring together people who had also recently moved to Port Macquarie. The growth was entirely organic - since I didn’t know anyone, I also didn’t have 88 GREATER PORT MACQUARIE focus
anyone to ask to join the group initially. The first time that I really noticed the growth was at our very first event. I hired out a small section of Jimmy’s Bar at Westport Club on a Saturday evening at 6.30pm to host some drinks, and I’d told the events team that I thought there would be maybe a maximum of 20 people at any one time (I hadn’t organised name tags, nothing). At 5.30pm I had about 75 people spilling out of the space, and it’s grown from there ever since. It was overwhelming - I had no idea why my little group had taken off, especially given there are so many social Facebook groups in the area. Can you tell us a bit about the group,
who it’s open to, and how people can join the community? Ultimately we are a group of women who value lifting other women up. Day to day, though - it’s a group that is a vehicle for getting involved socially doing things that you might love, right through to something that is totally outside of your comfort zone. If you love doing jigsaw puzzles and have always wanted to learn how to surf, you will find someone in the group who wants to join you. I didn’t want the connections to solely exist online, rather that they actually move into real life. It is open to women of any age, and the only prerequisites are that you live in the Port Macquarie-Hastings area and that
With over 2,000 members expected by the group’s one-year anniversary, did you ever imagine it would resonate with so many women in Port? Definitely not. I have often told people that I expected there to be a maximum of maybe 10-15 people who would turn up to one of the events that I was hosting and that would be it. There are a lot of Facebook groups in Port and I’ve often wondered why it resonated - the one thing I put it down to is that the goal was always to get the connections off Facebook and into real life. There are so many events that people can take part in - it doesn’t matter if you’re specifically interested in trying something new or just looking to meet some people. There’s something for everyone.
you agree to the rules of the group.
I moved to Port somewhat abruptly, and outside of family I knew nobody. I was able to build real friendships because overwhelmingly many of the women I connected with had also moved here as part of a big life change. Everyone could relate to the feeling of being displaced in some way.
You moved to Port Macquarie after a difficult period in your life. How did creating this community help you personally during that transition?
I moved to Port somewhat abruptly, and outside of family I knew nobody. I was able to build real friendships because overwhelmingly many of the women I connected with had also moved here as part of a big life change. Everyone could relate to the feeling of being displaced in some way.
What are some of the most memorable stories or friendships that have blossomed within the group?
There are so many. We have a very active group of over 60s and a group called DAWSS (Divorced And Widowed, Single and Separated) - I love these groups because a lot of women in the group have become quite significantly isolated after their partners have died, or they’ve gone through a separation of some sort. They have community and purpose as a result, which are two things that scientifically are known to improve depression. I can’t not say my book club, which I host on the second Thursday of each month. There’s women whose families now holiday together, and even jobs have been gained through connections in the group. The group offers a wide range of activities - from hikes to social meetups. Can you give us some examples
of things you’ve done so far and how do you decide what kinds of events to organise? There’s trivia every Tuesday, book club each month, working from home meetups for coffee, lunches and drinks every week. We’ve had jigsaw and scrabble groups, there’s a craft group that meets up, plantbased food lunches, a group that walks the breakwall each week - it’s very diverse. If there isn’t already something that interests you, then anyone is welcome to start their own. There’s also one-off events, so if you want to see a movie with some others, there will be at least one other person who will come with you. You’ve created a space where women of all ages feel they belong. What feedback have you received from members that especially touched you? I will never forget being told by a woman who told me that she’d been living in Port for over 20 years, but for the first time ever finally felt like she belonged. That’s never left me. What role has your admin and moderator team played in managing the group’s growth, and what does the team bring to the community’s success? The team have been lifesavers. There was a time where I wasn’t getting much out of the group myself because I was so busy doing what felt like facilitating everyone else’s enjoyment. I took a step back, and they allowed me to actually remember why I started it. The group is really diverse and everyone offers something different. I couldn’t do it without them. Do you have plans to expand and further develop the group? What new directions or projects do you envision for The Port Macquarie Ladies Club? There’s so many things that I want to do! I would love to do some fundraising for our local community, and I’d also love to have an event where we can have everyone come together. I’m planning for both of those to happen next year - watch this space. Thanks Chloe. GREATER PORT MACQUARIE focus 89

i Denis, can you share a bit about your background and the inspiration behind Moving With Grief? How did this initiative come

different practices that might have a beneficial effect on their healing.
I started to connect to others who were interested in cultural change in this area and together we set up a community-based, notfor-profit death care service, Tender Funerals Mid North Coast.
As a yoga teacher with 20+ years of experience, I understand and love sharing about the transformational and healing power of yoga. When I speak about yoga, I don’t mean stretching or strengthening on a mat – even though that is part of it - I mean coming home to yourself. Spending time alone, in silent connection with yourself, as well as in community with others choosing to live more consciously.
Once Tender was up and running, I was keen to do something that would combine my passion for community death care with my understanding of, and love for, the "healing arts" of yoga and related practices. I was fortunate to receive funding from the Yoga for Good Foundation for Moving with Grief, supporting community members who are experiencing loss and grief with free monthly yoga, gentle movement, meditation, sound healing and guided relaxation sessions for the ups and downs of living with loss.
In each session we start in a circle introducing ourselves to the group and then have about 60 minutes of gentle movement, yoga, sound healing, deep relaxation and similar practices. We generally do a brief check-in before afternoon tea, where we all mingle informally.
to life?
It is from this place that I developed a curiosity about death, which is a natural part of our life cycle. Unfortunately, culturally we are mostly in denial of death. Whilst death can be tragic and can lead to a great sense of loss, involving a myriad of emotions, there can also be beauty, learning about more subtle 90 GREATER PORT MACQUARIE focus
What can participants expect from a typical session of Moving With Grief? Sessions are about creating community connection and support, as well as offering an opportunity for participants to explore
How does the combination of movement, meditation, and community connection contribute to the healing process? Yoga, meditation, mindfulness, and intentional sound journeys are effective tools for grounding and self-soothing as we navigate our grief. Different practices have the potential for us to reach deep states of relaxation and calm our nervous system. I do believe community is instrumental in healing. Having others that listen free of judgement, knowing that people care and also that suffering is shared, are all helpful. Do participants need prior experience in yoga or meditation to benefit? No, not at all. All sessions are suitable to
anyone, regardless of previous experience. Practices offered are gentle and accessible to anyone. We can offer different props or the use of a chair, if getting on a mat is not an option for someone. It is also important to keep in mind that grief comes in many different shapes and doesn’t always involve the death of a person close to us. We can grieve the loss of friendships, loss of capacity, changes around our work or purpose. Everyone is welcome to attend Moving with Grief, regardless of the nature of their grief. How have the attendees and community responded so far? We’ve had two sessions this year, both of which were fully booked. The demand is definitely greater than our capacity at the moment but as time goes on, we may be able to offer additional sessions, if funding allows. So many of us are grieving a range of different losses, often with limited support. Some of our participants have told us that what drew them to come was the need to share about their experience and to be amongst others that are grieving because they feel that their community can struggle relating to them, particularly after a death. What has surprised me a little is the huge age range of participants. We’ve had a lot
more younger people attend than we initially expected, which just goes to show that loss and grief affect so many people in our community, not just the older generation.
It is also important to keep in mind that grief comes in many different shapes and doesn’t always involve the death of a person close to us.
Could you tell us a bit about some of the other people involved? What was it that drew them to this project and what roles do they play? I've been overwhelmed with the support that our local yoga teachers’ community has given to this initiative. The interest in becoming a volunteer facilitator was huge. Many of the volunteers have their own grief story, which is one of the motivators for their involvement in this project. What would you say to someone who is hesitant or nervous about attending a Moving With Grief session? We create a safe and welcoming space for our sessions. We encourage participants to honour their own self-care, and we invite direct and compassionate conversation. We aim to create connection, reassurance and collective healing in a gentle and inclusive way. How can people in the Hastings area
support this initiative or spread the word about it?
We are holding a fundraising event, Gathered for Good, on Sunday, 16 February at Francis Retreat in Bonny Hills. This will be a 1-day event full of nourishing, inspiring and creative offerings open to anyone in the community. Sessions include Gentle Yoga, Sound Healing, Creative Writing, Sacred Rhythmic Dance, Walking Meditation, Nature Mandala creation and more. We are inviting people to attend for ½ day or a full day, with tickets starting from $60. For more information go to www.tenderfunerals.com. au/midnorthcoast/gathered-for-good. We’d love for the community to support this event in the beautiful hall and grounds of Francis Retreat by buying a ticket, gifting a ticket to someone else or donating a raffle prize. Sharon Ekendahl has recently stepped into the role of President for the Hastings Business Women’s Network after being a committee member for the past 3 years. She plans to use her time in this position to continue to ensure that all women in the community feel welcome and valued in the network, and to continue to inspire both professional and personal growth.
H
i Sharon, can you tell us a bit about your professional background and what led you to join the Hastings Business Women's Network?
I’ve had a diverse career working in finance in law firms, accounting firms and now run my own bookeeping business, Coast Consult here in Port Macquarie. I joined HBWN because I wanted to connect with like-minded women, share experiences, network and contribute to a supportive community that encourages professional and personal growth. The HBWN has provided all of this and has also allowed me to meet some amazing women who are now life-long friends. How long have you been a part of HBWN, 94 GREATER PORT MACQUARIE focus
and what roles have you held within the organisation prior to becoming President?
environment where every woman feels inspired to reach their potential.
I’ve been on the HBWN committee for 3 years, contributing to its mission through various roles, including Treasurer, Vice President and now President. These positions allowed me to develop a deeper understanding of our members’ needs and the importance of fostering meaningful connections in the community.
HBWN plays a significant role in supporting local business women. In your view, what makes the network so vital to the community?
What does it mean to you personally to step into the role of President of HBWN? Stepping into the role of President is an honour and a privilege. It represents an opportunity to lead a network that empowers women, drives collaboration, and nurtures growth in our community. Personally, it’s a way to give back and help shape a supportive
HBWN provides a safe and collaborative space for women to connect, learn, and grow both personally and professionally. Our values Encourage, Educate, Empower, and Embrace are reflected in everything we do, from professional development workshops to networking events that foster collaboration and mutual support to all members and guests that attend. The network provides a safe space to establish business, professional and personal relationships that can last a lifetime.
Are there any recent achievements or initiatives of HBWN that you’re particularly proud of? This year, HBWN turns 25! On 1 February 2025, we will be holding our very special 2025 Calendar Launch and 25th Silver Anniversary Gala event at Mercure Centro, Port Macquarie. The event is a celebration of our history and a bow to our Tall Poppies (Life Members) who for 25 years have provided leadership, guidance and support for committees past and present and to all our members. Additionally, at our strategy session this year, our committee are super excited to commence work on refreshing our member benefits, launching surveys to better understand members’ needs, and embracing new opportunities for professional development, community engagement and of course networking and having fun. What are your top priorities and goals for HBWN during your presidency? My top priority is to ensure that all women in the community feel welcome and valued in the network. I want all women in the community to know that you don’t have to run a business to join the HBWN and all business women no matter what industry they work in are welcome. For example, if you want to show up to a networking event in a high vis uniform then please do! We don’t discriminate. We want everyone to feel included and that they belong. We want to live by our Vision, Purpose and Value as outlined here: Vision: "A community where women are empowered, inspired, and supported to thrive in business and life." Purpose: "To inspire, support, and elevate women in business through connection, growth, and collaboration."
• “We offer learning opportunities to equip members with essential skills and knowledge."
•Ros Trotter, Professional Development Coordinator
• Empower:
What advice would you give to women looking to grow their careers or start their own businesses in the Hastings region?
• We help women realise and maximise their potential." • Embrace: • "We celebrate diversity and foster an inclusive, supportive community within our network." What inspires you most about the women in the Hastings community? The resilience, creativity, and generosity of the women in our community inspire me daily. They’re not just striving for success in business, they’re also committed to uplifting others and making a positive difference in the community. I’d also like to make a special mention to all women that hold volunteer roles in the community and on various networks. Community contributions and donations would not be possible if the volunteers don’t drive and steer our not-for-profit networks to be successful. A special shout out to the HBWN committee (these women amaze and inspire me everyday): • Kelly Carter, Secretary • Julia Kraemer, Treasurer
Values and Statements:
• Gerry Buckland, Membership Coordinator
Encourage:
• Maddie Wilson, Events Coordinator
• "We motivate members to pursue their goals with confidence and determination."
• Nick Cook, Communications \ Coordinator
• Educate:
• Abby Koch, Social Media Coordinator
• Tarym Wright, Sponsorship Coordinator
I’d encourage them to build strong networks, stay curious, and embrace learning opportunities. Joining HBWN can be a great first step, as it provides access to mentorship, resources, and a community of like-minded women eager to support each other’s journeys. What legacy do you hope to leave behind as President of HBWN? My vision is for the network to continue thriving as a space where women feel welcome and connected, with systems in place to sustain its growth for years to come. How can women in the Hastings area get involved with the network, and what would you say to encourage them to join? Women can get involved by attending our events, exploring membership options, or even contributing their skills as volunteers or committee members. There are also opportunities for sponsorship and speaking engagements. Women can get involved as much or as little as they like. HBWN is more than a network - it’s a community where you’ll find encouragement, collaboration, and opportunities to grow both professionally and personally. I’d say, “Join us and discover the power of connection!” GREATER PORT MACQUARIE focus 95

Bennett Tamara Bennett recently won first place in the WorldSkills Australia Fashion Technology Regional Competition for the Mid Coast region, making her eligible to attend the National competition in Brisbane next year.
H
i Tamara, congratulations on winning first place in the WorldSkills Australia Fashion Technology Regional Competition! How does it feel to achieve this milestone? I am thrilled to have won this competition. This achievement allowed me to demonstrate my hard work, dedication, and the passion that I have for the textiles industry. It is rewarding to see my efforts recognised through this competition and given the opportunity to progress further in this competition. I would like to thank all those who supported me; my family, teachers and fellow students. Due to this win, I am motivated to continue working towards my goals in the fashion industry. I am truly grateful for this opportunity and thrilled to continue growing and achieving more in the future. 98 GREATER PORT MACQUARIE focus
Can you tell us a bit about the experience? What was your mindset during the event, and how did you stay focused? My mindset during the event was focused on each of the tasks I had to complete in order to create the sample skirt. To achieve this, I analysed the sample skirt we were given and created a list of tasks that I followed to recreate the design. By following these steps and procedures I was able to employ my knowledge and understanding of industry sewing techniques and procedures that allowed the creation of this piece within the time period. The bodice pattern I created during class, was made by studying the technical drawing provided by WorldSkills allowing me to create a pattern that represented the technical drawing. What was your reaction when your name was announced as the winner?
When the winner was announced I was astonished that I had received first place. This could not have been achieved without the help, guidance and support from my teachers and fellow students. I was thrilled to be able to announce this to my closest friends, family and former textiles teacher who were all as excited as I was upon hearing the news. They have been my greatest inspiration and encouragement throughout my whole journey up until now, allowing me to strive for and achieve my dream. What inspired you to pursue a Certificate III in Textiles, Apparel, and Fashion at TAFE NSW? My mother was a quilter and a sewer who made all my clothes growing up. I learnt to sew from her and fell in love with it. It became a true passion during year 11 and 12 while completing the textiles technology HSC course. My textiles teacher gave me confidence and furthered my skills and love
individuals working together from various departments. Along with this, the ability to create patterns and apply the industry standard sewing techniques to my designs is something that I have developed greatly since starting this course. All of these skills have come together to develop my confidence in myself and work effectively and collaboratively with a team. The Australian fashion industry is a growing field with many opportunities. What excites you most about being part of this industry in the future? The new technologies that are being developed in the fashion industry daily are what excites me the most. Technology is being integrated into fibres themselves to further develop the medical world, such as bandages being used as a tool to diagnose a wound’s pH level by changing colours. Sustainable practices are also being further developed as fibre contents are changing to be more eco friendly. An example of These products this is textiles products are completely made from seaweed, biodegradable while called SeaCell. of fashion, encouraging me to pursue it further. From this I chose to further develop these skills by applying them in a more professional manner. I was able to achieve this by applying to TAFE NSW and enrolling in the Cert. III in Textiles, Apparel and Fashion course where my teachers have allowed me to develop these skills further and apply them to the industry standards of fashion.
What are some of the most important skills or techniques you’ve learned during your time at TAFE NSW? The most important skills that I was able to develop were my ability to communicate to those around me in a clear and concise manner, allowing ideas and instructions to be shared effectively. This is highly important in this field due to the sheer number of
Winning this competition has qualified you for the National Competition in Brisbane next year. How are you preparing for this next challenge? I will be attending the TAFE NSW Development Camp with the rest of the regional competition winners early next year, to develop my teamwork and technological skills. While also working with my teachers on improving the skills I’m not as confident with. I will continue to use these skills as much as possible before the competition to further integrate the knowledge needed to pursue my goals in the fashion industry. I am also researching the latest trends and innovations in the fashion industry to stay current.
Looking ahead, what are your ultimate goals in fashion? Do you have a particular area of the industry you’re most passionate about? My ultimate goal is to be a designer of modern fashion that is sustainable, while still being affordable for all consumers. Working with new sustainable companies that produce and manufacture the materials needed while also being able to work closely with other popular fashion brands to bring my ideas to life in the continuously developing fashion industry. This would be my ultimate goal in the future while working in the fashion industry. I strive to develop the skills and understanding required to achieve this goal. The competition showcased your design and sewing skills. What inspires your designs, and how do you approach bringing your ideas to life? My inspiration comes from many different sources. It can come from something as simple as a piece of fabric or the natural shapes, textures, and colours of the environment. Inspiration can also come from past design sketches either from myself or famous designers, as well as runway photographs and interviews. To bring this inspiration to life I create a mood board filled with colour swatches, shapes, textures, materials, and inspiration photos before sketching out multiple design ideas. After this I choose my favourite design before further developing it into a final working production. What’s next for you as you finish your studies and embark on this exciting journey? I will continue with my present job while working towards developing the skill set needed to compete in the WorldSkills competition. This will also help me in the future as I look towards a career in the fashion industry, where I will be able to achieve my ultimate goal. I hope there will be many opportunities for further education either with TAFE NSW or another higher education provider allowing me to continue developing and expanding my knowledge and skills required within this industry. Thanks Tamara. GREATER PORT MACQUARIE focus 99

Congratulations Class of 2024
From the Principal — Mr Allan Guihot
The day that the HSC results come out is often about numbers. One could be excused for thinking that the person behind that number is somewhat lost. Yet, the students of the Class of 2024 have, throughout their time at SCAS, displayed a wide range of talents and they graduate with much more than a great set of ATAR numbers. On result day, I am interested in “who” our graduates want to be as much as “what” do they want to do now that they are finished school. It’s a different question which interrogates different outcomes from school — not what was your mark but how did you learn and how do you learn. What competencies have you developed to solve problems, work with others, create new ideas…how are you growing those competencies into dispositions — things you do regularly without having to think about it too much. Our students graduate with a range of educational and cultural experiences, skills and dispositions that have prepared them for the evolving world into which they enter. They have been given an insight into what it takes to be productive, responsible and engaged members of our society and will hopefully each contribute something to make a better world. We think our graduates can do anything they want to do after school! Knowing “who you are” will help determine how effective they are at the what…not the other way round. The attributes we hope they will develop here at SCAS will make them a better scientist, engineer, doctor, tradie, teacher, nurse, computer programmer, pilot, accountant, etc. They are now ready to engage this world through their plans for study, work, travel and service. They leave behind their school days but do not leave our community as we will always welcome news of their exploits, future visits and new learnings. On behalf of the St Columba Anglican School community, I congratulate our Class of 2024 on their hard-earned meritorious results. Their Higher School Certificate results continue the School’s excellent record of academic achievement. The School placed strongly in the HSC Top Schools rankings at 105th, placing it clearly at the top of schools in the region and among the top few north of Sydney. We wish our graduates well in their future and are firm in our belief that their time at St Columba has been well spent and their bright futures will reflect the value of the “world of opportunities” they have been offered in their time with us. A message of congratulations from the Head of Secondary School — Mr Paul Rikmanis The School Council, Principal, and staff of St Columba Anglican School proudly celebrate the outstanding achievements of the Class of 2024, our 18th Higher School Certificate cohort. These students have upheld and enhanced our school’s rich academic legacy while forging their own path to excellence. This year’s Higher School Certificate results reflect exceptional achievement, with 38 students contributing to an impressive 94 entries on the Distinguished Achievers list. The breadth of this success is particularly noteworthy, with over 80% of subjects achieving one or more Band 6 results and 37% of our students earning places on the Distinguished Achievers list. We extend our warmest congratulations to our highest-achieving students: Murray Cameron-Brown, who led the cohort with an exceptional ATAR of 99.5, was closely followed by Ali Ashrafy (99.45) and Remy Bucton (99.1). Approximately 20% of our students achieved ATARs above 90. Seven subjects — Drama, Dance, English Extension 1, English Extension 2, Mathematics Extension 2, Society and Culture and Visual Arts — achieved the remarkable distinction of having 100% of students achieve in the top two bands. Drama and Physics showed particular strength, with 63% and 44% of students respectively achieving Band 6 results. Further academic excellence was evident across multiple subjects, with English Advanced students achieving an outstanding 98% in the top two bands. Design and Technology and Entertainment Industry students demonstrated similar distinction, with 93% reaching this level, while Extension History (88%), Mathematics Extension 1 (80%) and Construction (80%) students also achieved impressive results in the top two bands. As pioneers in Deep Learning competencies in partnership with the University of Melbourne, our students excelled across multiple domains. Notable achievements include Ashleigh Barlin’s selection for the prestigious Callback HSC Dance showcase. Liliana Clarke earned the Gold Duke of Edinburgh award, while Indiana Jones secured acceptance into NIDA’s Bachelor of Fine Arts programme. Lachlan Kersten, Sarah King, and Michael Vandoros had their Design and Technology projects shortlisted for the Australian Science and Engineering Fair, while Year 10 student Finneas Vicars achieved Band 6 results in accelerated Advanced Mathematics, Extension 1 Mathematics and Physics. The entire St Columba community celebrates these remarkable achievements of the Class of 2024, which truly embody our commitment to excellence in both academic achievement and holistic development.

AI in Marketing: Your Friendly Terminator for Business Growth
icture Arnold Schwarzenegger’s “I’ll be back”, but instead of vengeance, your AI marketing assistant is returning with killer ad copy and mind-blowing insights. Unlike Skynet, AI is here to help, streamlining your marketing while keeping costs low. Generative AI tools like ChatGPT are game changers, automating tasks, creating content, and analysing data with unparalleled efficiency. But don’t ditch the human touch - collaborating with freelancers ensures your marketing stays creative, engaging, and authentically “you.” How AI Supercharges Marketing AI in marketing isn’t just futuristic hype; it’s delivering results today. Tools like ChatGPT can generate email campaigns, social media posts, and even complex ad copy in seconds. Need to personalise a message for a customer? AI does it at lightning speed. Want to decode mountains of consumer data? Easy. According to McKinsey & Company, a global management consulting firm, generative AI could boost marketing productivity by 3040%, contributing up to $4.4 trillion annually across industries. Think of AI as your T-800, obliterating inefficiencies instead of cities. Why AI Saves Big Bucks The cost benefits are undeniable. Klarna, a
Swedish fintech company, saved $10 million annually by using AI for ad campaigns and creative tasks. This helped the company reduce its sales and marketing budget by 11%, with 37% of those savings attributed to AI. Startups are also reaping the rewards. Edtech company Headway used ChatGPT and MidJourney to cut production costs, achieving 3.3 billion ad impressions in six months and improving their ad investment returns by 40%. AI allows businesses to scale like never before, without the hefty price tag of a full marketing team. Why Freelancers Are Still Essential Here’s the catch: even the smartest AI lacks the creativity and emotional intelligence of a human. Sure, ChatGPT can churn out 100 product descriptions, but it won’t dream up a bold, original campaign that resonates with your audience. This is where freelancers come in. Think of them as your ‘John Connor’ - the human strategists guiding the machines. They bring creativity, nuance, and cultural understanding that AI simply can’t replicate. Plus, they can ensure your AI doesn’t make embarrassing mistakes (we’ve all seen cringy AI-generated copy). How to Use AI (Without Going Full Skynet)
Ready to combine AI’s efficiency with human expertise? Here’s how: • Automate the Repetitive Stuff Use AI for grunt work like customer segmentation, keyword research, and analytics. Free up freelancers to focus on strategy and storytelling. • Speed Up Content Creation AI drafts the basics, like social posts, blogs, or ad copy, and your freelancer fine-tunes it, adding flair and brand personality. • Leverage Data Smarts AI analyses campaign performance in real time, giving your freelancer the insights to make smarter tweaks. • Optimise Costs Skip the expense of a full-blown team. Pair AI tools with a few skilled freelancers to scale your marketing efficiently. AI + Freelancers = Marketing Gold AI is a powerhouse, but it’s not an endgame. When paired with a creative freelancer, it becomes an unstoppable force. AI handles the heavy lifting, while freelancers add the polish, strategy, and human touch your campaigns need to shine. So, embrace the machines - but don’t forget the humans. Together, they’ll help your marketing say, “Hasta la vista, competition.” GREATER PORT MACQUARIE focus 107

New Year, New Mortgage Goals: Resolutions for Homeowners in 2025!
s the calendar flips to a new year, many Australian homeowners are setting their sights on improving their mortgage situation in 2025. After several years of rapid house price growth and interest rate hikes, Aussies are eager to get a better handle on their home loans. If you are wondering how, you have come to the right place! Let’s look at ways to take control back over your mortgage in 2025! 1. Refinance for a Better Deal If you haven’t reviewed your loan in the last 24 months it is worth seeing your broker to complete a home loan health check. You may be eligible to receive a lower interest rate then what you’re currently paying. Mortgage interest rates have climbed significantly since May of 2022 following a series of Reserve Bank cash rate increases. According to Canstar, the average home loan size in NSW is $779,239. This equates to a monthly mortgage repayment of $5,096 per month. (Based on an average variable rate of 6.83%). By refinancing to a lower rate, even by just a half of a percent, borrowers could save over $250 per month or over $3,000 per year. Of course, it's important to weigh the costs of refinancing, such as application fees and discharge penalties, against the long-
108 GREATER PORT MACQUARIE focus
term savings so speak to your broker and understand whether refinancing may be right for you. 2. Increasing Mortgage Repayments If paying off your home sooner is important to you, you may wish to make extra repayments in 2025. This is a wise goal if you are wanting to build equity or set yourself up for retirement. By switching your loan repayments to weekly and making just $50 more in weekly repayments, homeowners could shave 3 1/2 years off a 30-year loan and save over $149,100 in interest charges. (based on the average loan of $779,239 at the average rate of 6.83%) Even small boosts to regular repayments can have a big impact over time. Of course, the ability to make extra repayments depends on individual financial circumstances. But for those who can swing it, accelerating mortgage payments is one of the best ways to build home equity and long-term wealth. 3. Switching to Offset or Redraw If you are currently on a basic loan product you may want to consider if switching to a product that allows offset or redraw is going to be beneficial in 2025. These features allow borrowers to use their savings to reduce the amount of interest paid, while still maintaining access to those funds if needed. 4. Consolidating Debts
If you have accumulated some unwanted debts this year you may want to look at options of consolidating them into one easy repayment in the new year. This debt consolidation strategy can help simplify finances, increase cash flow and potentially reduce the overall interest paid. However, it's important to crunch the numbers with your broker carefully, as extending the repayment period on debts could end up costing more in the long run. Homeowners should also be cautious about using their home equity to consolidate their debts. 5. Exploring Fixed-Rate Options Exploring fixed rate options may become more enticing in 2025 as banks start to reduce their longer-term fixed rates. You may be expecting a change to your financial situation in 2025 which may call for certainty of repayments. If this is the case, then a fixed rate may be an option for you. Be sure to take time to understand the limitations and fees associated with a fixed rate product. Whatever your situation, I wish 2025 to be a wonderful and prosperous year for you and your family. Working with your broker and taking the time to understand these strategies is the first step to taking control back over your mortgage in 2025! A
ndrew was this journey into food and beverage always a dream of yours? How did it all begin?
I was in my early 20s when I started working in the hospitality industry, moving between Port Macquarie for the summer and the Snowy Mountains over winter. I was exposed to the specialty coffee industry during this period and I fell in love. After a few years of working in some of Australia’s most successful cafes, I was dying to open my own in my hometown PMQ. My best mate Chris and I found a rundown building on Gordon Street and after being told that we were crazy by our parents and some of our closest friends we decided to go for it anyway. We had no idea how successful that little cafe was going to be. After working the first six months straight without a day off we knew we were onto a winner. It is so nice to still see it operating today. Once I sold Social Grounds in 2018, I knew I would stay immersed in the industry. What were the key ingredients to realising your vision of Banks Cafe and how did you bring it to life? I opened Banks with the help of my then business partners Brad Hodge (owner of Coast Cafe) and his wife Jess (interior designer).
Together we created a vision that was largely driven by the waterfront location. The interiors, the seafood focused modern Australian menu, and wanting to provide an event space were all about celebrating and sharing the surroundings. We drew on a team of local trades and suppliers to bring it to life. You offer everything from delicious waterfront coffee and breakfast to sun drenched lunches and dinners and deliver stunning special events and weddings. How have you and the team created the magic that is the Banks vibe and deliver on the original vision? Creating the magic, for me, comes down to finding a team who share my passion for food, coffee and small business. We spend a lot of time together and it is fundamentally important that we all get along and have a good time. I think our customers can sense that and I’m eternally grateful to the staff for the positive feedback we receive. What has been your most effective tool/s or attribute/s as a business owner that has enabled you to steer Banks from idea to successful reality? As a small business owner you can’t substitute hard work and the initial few years are inevitably about putting in long hours to establish the business. In doing so, I’ve had a chance to get to
know our customers, while keeping an eye on the details. The last few years have been a challenging time for the hospitality industry and forced me to become far more business minded than I’ve ever been. I've been fortunate to be supported through this process by a few mentors, like Brad Hodge when we were business partners, and Scott Brown who is the owner of a successful hospitality group in Sydney. I’m also grateful to our landlords at the sailing club for their willingness to invest in the sustainability of the business and in contributing to Banks being a beautiful space for the community to enjoy. You have had careers both in and out of the foodie world. As a hospitality and business mind do you subscribe to a firm business plan or follow your gut instinct? The amount of time I have spent working operating the business hasn’t left much opportunity to implement our original business plan and forces me to run off my gut instinct. As the business becomes more established I’m starting to get a chance to focus on what we hoped to do when we first opened. To me it feels like the first three years have been in survival mode and I can't wait to see the business reach its potential in the next few years. You have curated a network of staff and local event suppliers and are dedicated to
delivering on your vision. How important are these relationships to the success of your business?
product and service isn’t enough. Although I’m proud of myself for surviving this and raising a young family at the same time.
I enjoy working with our suppliers, some of them for more than 10 years. You truly do form a relationship and it becomes an amazing source of understanding and support. Port Macquarie is extremely lucky to have such great local produce and hard working small businesses that are integral to each other's success.
How instrumental have sages and critics been in your evolution of your career/ business ? What is the most valuable lesson they taught you?
This year I’ve picked up a side gig working as a regional representative for Gabrielle, a specialty coffee roaster from Sydney, after being their customer since 2014. I love the quality of their product and working with other cafe owners has been an interesting avenue to explore. It’s exciting to me to offer what I have learnt along the way and also a great opportunity to stay inspired and keep learning at the same time. What has been your greatest achievement in your business journey? Conversely, what was your greatest challenge? My biggest achievement so far has been opening and running Social Grounds. I was doing it all for the first time and it was a risk that paid off. Opening Banks during COVID-19 restrictions and recovering from that in the current economic climate have been the most challenging times I’ve experienced. It’s a different game to when I ran Social Grounds, simply focusing on the
We send out an email to every customer after each visit asking about their experience. The feedback we receive dictates where we invest money and energy back into the business. Often the recurring themes that pop up aren’t what I would have prioritised but we do so to make sure Banks keeps exceeding our customers’ expectations. For example: when we first opened we had a number of people respond and say they felt the venue was too loud. This encouraged us to reach out to Mark Bassett (a local sound engineer), who offered us a simple sound proofing solution to reduce 80% of the background noise. It has made a huge difference and is well received by customers. What can we expect from Banks in 2025? We’ll continue to fine tune what we are known and loved for, with plenty of events locked in. We’re also planning on having more ticketed special events and opening for afternoon sunset drinks. Thanks Andrew. GREATER PORT MACQUARIE focus 111

WHAT’S HOT in DECOR TRENDS
for 2025
A
s we welcome 2025, interior design in Australia is set to embrace a dynamic blend of bold aesthetics, sustainable practices, and technological advancements. Here’s a quick look at the upcoming trends that will most likely shape Australian homes this year. Vibrant Colours and Textures The shift from minimalist to a more vibrant decor is marked by the resurgence of jewel tones like sapphire blue, emerald green, and ruby reds. These rich colours will replace muted neutrals as feature colours, adding depth and character to interiors. Textural elements will also play a crucial role, with diverse materials enhancing the sensory appeal of spaces. Biophilic Design Biophilic design continues to gain momentum, focusing on incorporating natural elements indoors. This trend emphasises the extensive use of plants, natural light, and materials like wood and stone to create environments that promote both physical and mental well-being. Homes will feature elements like rock-face textures and water features, fostering a connection with nature. Integrated Indoor-Outdoor Living The seamless integration of indoor and outdoor spaces still remains popular in Australia, reflecting our country’s love for open-air living. This trend involves using sliding glass doors and coordinated furniture to blur the lines between interior and exterior areas, creating versatile spaces that are both functional and stylish. Sustainability is at the forefront of 2025’s decor trends. Homeowners are increasingly opting for recycled timber, sustainable concrete, and eco-friendly insulation. These materials not only enhance the aesthetic appeal but also contribute to reducing the carbon footprint of homes. Smart Homes Technological advancements are transforming homes into smart spaces with

integrated systems for lighting, climate control, and security. These innovations enhance convenience and energy eficiency, paving the way for homes that are both modern and environmentally friendly. Retro Revival Vintage and retro styles are making a comeback, with influences from midcentury modern, 70s, and 80s designs. This revival includes the return of (wait for it…) avocado bathrooms and furniture pieces characterised by bold colours and distinctive patterns. Earthy Neutrals Despite the trend towards bold colours, earthy neutrals remain a timeless choice for creating calming interiors. These tones serve as versatile base colours that complement various styles, promoting relaxation and comfort in living spaces. Statement Lighting Lighting is fast becoming a key design element that combines functionality with style. From oversized pendants to sculptural wall lights, statement lighting fixtures are set to transform the ambiance of our rooms in 2025. Smaller Footprints - Bigger Statements As urban living spaces shrink, there’s a growing trend towards making bold statements in smaller areas. This involves using multifunctional furniture and creative designs to cleverly maximise space without sacrificing style or comfort. Natural Stone Accents Natural stones like marble, granite, and sandstone are being used extensively for countertops, flooring, and accent walls. These materials add both visual interest and tactile appeal to interiors. The wrap Look out for a blend of bold aesthetics, nature-inspired designs, sustainability, and smart technology as a reflection of interior design and decor trends in 2025. These elements come together to create beautifully inspirational homes that are not only stylish, but also environmentally conscious and technologically advanced.

fter visiting Port Macquarie five years ago for a week long holiday, Ross and Jacqui knew this was somewhere they could live. “On the drive home, we looked at each other and said this is somewhere we could see ourselves living,” said Ross. Fast forward to now, Ross and Jacqui call the Glenfern community home. Located in Thrumster, a 10-minute drive from Port Macquarie, Glenfern offers a private lifestyle set amongst the nature of the Mid North Coast. Moving from their family home in Sydney to Thrumster, Ross and Jacqui had boxes that needed to be ticked when deciding on where they wanted to spend their golden years. “We didn’t look at retirement villages because we aren’t in that stage of life yet. We were looking to move into a community where we have the lifestyle to have friends and the community around us but not be a retirement home. That’s what drew us to Glenfern,” said Jacqui. Amenities include a modern clubhouse where you will often find residents hosting afternoon tea or catching up for a sundowner drink in the BBQ area overlooking the stunning bushland. “It’s quite a mix of people within the community and we all get together regularly for events. If you want to join in you can or if you don’t want to join in, then you don’t but most times we are all joining in!” said Ross. If you’re looking to keep active there is a 25m lap pool and gym at your fingertips, or if group activities are more your speed you can join friends for a friendly hit of pickleball or try your hand on the bowling green. “I’m busy!” laughed Jacqui. “I try and get involved in a lot of things. I play lawn bowls on Tuesdays and Fridays, pickleball on Wednesdays, a couple of the ladies and I go to the gym every afternoon on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesdays,” said Jacqui. Ross, however, likes to approach his days with a slower pace. “For me it’s a little bit more relaxed. I tend to get up in the morning and go for a walk with our dog, enjoy breakfast and coffee, relax, and have lunch.
I look forward to about 3:30pm when most people are about in the community and get out to enjoy the nice weather and socialise with our neighbours,” said Ross. Glenfern has a range of modern, quality and affordable homes to choose from with the option of single level and two-level designs. Enjoy spacious kitchens with stone bench tops and quality appliances, open plan living, and outdoor entertaining areas. Homes have been designed with practicality in mind with guest bedrooms and multi-purpose rooms making it easy to host family and friends.
