HChar Bar Catering has become synonymous in Port Macquarie with quality food and good times with the team growing from strength to strength creating a unique foodie experience for weddings and special events. With numerous accolades under their belt, founders Stefan and Liz Hoste ler have set their feet firmly on the ground with a permanent location at Port Macquarie Race Club. FOCUS caught up with cover stars Stef and Liz to talk through all things food, their shared love of creativity and their commitment to providing the region with a diverse culinary experience like no other.

Liz & Stefan Ho  ler

i Stef and Liz! Thank you both for your time. Take us back to where it all began. Stef, you have over 25 years experience in the industry as a professional chef, has this always been a shared vision to run a successful catering company, and can you tell us what drives you on a daily basis?

Thanks Sarah! I don’t think we ever envisioned doing what we’re doing now. Liz and I have always been passionate and creative people, and when you combine that with our love for food and the joy of making people feel good, it just makes sense that we ended up here, doing what we love.

The drive for us comes from a deep appreciation for GOOD FOOD, good people, and good times. It’s not just about the food – it’s about creating experiences. We’re inspired by our clients, our

CHAR BAR CATERING

incredible team, and, of course, our family, who constantly remind us of the bigger picture. Being able to share our passion with others and seeing the joy it brings to people keeps us motivated every day.

Your approach is not a one size fits all package and you take the time to carefully ascertain what a client is looking for and ensure you offer a range of culinary options. This can include a sample menu to get a taste of the many delicacies Char Bar Catering can provide for a special event, whether it be a boho style relaxed picnic or a large scale corporate event with a fine dining service. What have been some of your highlights in business thus far?

Highlights have certainly been plentiful, but the ones that stand out the most are the moments when we touch base with our clients after an event. A typical Monday morning for us involves

calling brides after their big day or following up with clients from events we hosted over the weekend. There's truly nothing better than hearing the overwhelming gratitude and excitement from a bride and groom who are delighted with not only the quality of our food but also our customer service and the entire experience we’ve created for them. Those moments reaffirm why we do what we do –knowing we’ve helped make someone’s special day even more memorable is the ultimate reward.

Char Bar Catering has been recognised at local and international levels for your commitment to excellence in catering including Best Wedding Caterer of the Year for the past two years for the Mid North Coast and Northern Rivers regions. You’ve also been internationally recognised at the World Food Championships for your

Fried Chicken Burger. What does success look like for you both and how do these accolades reflect your hard work and commitment in the field?

When recognition comes our way, we certainly appreciate it. It’s a reminder for us to pause and celebrate the wins. But to us, true success isn't just about awards, it’s about the daily wins we experience. We celebrate small victories every day, whether it’s positive feedback from clients or seeing our calendar fill up with events. When we see that our clients are happy and our reputation continues to grow, that’s when we look at each other and think, 'Okay, we’re doing alright.' The real success, though, is the people we’re surrounded by, like our hardworking team, because none of this

would be possible without them. We believe in our brand, our team, and we know we deliver not only an incredible product but an experience that our clients won’t forget. These accolades are nice, but the real reward comes from the work we do and the relationships we build along the way.

My

approach is all about providing personalised service, where I take the time to understand each client’s unique needs, goals, and circumstances.

Can you tell us what a typical day might look like for Char Bar. I imagine each day could vary significantly from one day to the next.

Typical for us is different every day, and that’s what keeps it exciting! We both

wear many hats in the organisation. Liz, along with Megan, one of our amazing team members, takes care of our clients from first contact all the way through to follow-up calls after the event. On top of that, Liz manages all of our social media and marketing and the girls organise everything behind the scenes to ensure every detail is taken care of.

I’m also organising behind the scenes to handle everything, from planning menus and creating team rosters to food costing, sourcing, and ordering ingredients. Alongside our superstar apprentice, Jamison, and the rest of our crew, I’m involved in the preparation, service, and delivery on event days. Each day might look different depending on the event we’re working on, but it’s all about teamwork and ensuring that everything goes off without a hitch. It’s a busy, dynamic process, but we love it.

CHAR BAR CATERING

Char Bar Catering has received numerous 5-star reviews and testimonials from your clients about the quality of food produced and the team’s friendly and approachable manner, exceeding expectations. How do you seek to add value to your customers through engaging in your services?

Exceeding expectations is at the heart of everything we do at Char Bar Catering. Every day, we put ourselves in our clients’ shoes and ask, “What can we do to truly make them happy?” This mindset allows us to approach every interaction with empathy and care.

We also understand that every client is unique, with specific requirements, and this perspective ensures that we provide a personalised, five-star service. By focusing on individuality, quality, and genuine connection, we not only meet expectations but aim to go beyond them.

You are conscious in business to partner with a number of local and trusted vendors to assist people plan a wedding or special event. Why is this an important attribute for you in business?

Partnering with other local businesses is something we’re VERY passionate about. Not only does it allow us to showcase the amazing talent and products right here in our community, but it also helps us create a more personal and well-rounded experience for our clients.

We love supporting other local people and businesses and we recommend people we know will deliver the same high standard of quality and care that we do.

us and pushed us to be versatile and creative. These challenges forced us to think outside the box to find ways to keep moving forward, and while they were tough, they also helped us grow stronger as a team and as a business.

We love supporting other local people and businesses and we recommend people we know will deliver the same high standard of quality and care that we do. We also look after those businesses that look after us. Its why our brand has “Good people” in its catch phrase.

At the end of the day, it’s about lifting each other up, supporting other small businesses, and ensuring our clients feel confident they’re in great hands. We believe that when local businesses work together, everyone wins. Since launching the brand in 2019, what have been some of your hardest lessons to learn?

The fires, floods, and COVID-19 really tested

Beyond those major events, the biggest and most ongoing challenge has been finding a healthy work-life balance. The truth is success doesn’t happen overnight. It takes persistence, hard work, and a willingness to push through setbacks - but that often comes with long hours and time away from the people we love. It’s a constant juggling act, and it’s not always easy.

That said, we’ve learned so much about prioritising and being intentional with our time. Finding that balance is one of our biggest goals, and we feel like we’re getting closer every day. It’s a work in progress, but we know it’s worth it for both our business and our family.

Who or what inspires you creatively in the kitchen?

Everything from the season, trends, and friends inspires us to create “Good Food”.

For both of us, it’s all about the people we love - making them happy, excited about eating, laughing, and creating good memories together. Liz is always pushing herself in the kitchen, trying new recipes, and pleasing those around her with her love of food. Stef, the professional chef, might spot a photo online or in a magazine that sparks an idea for a menu item, or even an entire menu.

What is on the horizon for Char Bar for the year ahead and what can we expect from the team at your new permanent location at the race club, having now set up residency since late last year?

The future is as exciting as it was on day one! Alongside our original home at Moorebeer Brewery, we’re thrilled to be the exclusive caterers at the Port Macquarie Race Club. We started with the always exciting race meets, where we’ve introduced our popular smoked meats to the menu, alongside our renowned food truck offerings and the traditional preorder platters.

The race club venue has been hosting not only race meets but also musicians, markets, the upcoming Wedding Expo and more. It’s become a vibrant space for a variety of events, with more exciting (secret) events on the horizon! The venue itself is one of Port Macquarie’s best, featuring the Ivan

Livermore Stand with gorgeous glass windows that offer stunning views and can comfortably accommodate events with larger guest numbers. The Clydesdale Room also boasts a gorgeous deck, providing a breathtaking space for guests to enjoy during events.

The drive for us comes from a deep appreciation for GOOD FOOD, good people and good times. It’s not just about the food, it’s about creating experiences.

You’ll find us here hosting private and public events at the incredibly versatile track venue. Whether it’s an intimate celebration or a large-scale gathering, we’re proud to provide a personalised catering experience that can comfortably accommodate any size, from 50 guests to 5,000. And being slightly out of the way only adds to its charm, offering a peaceful yet accessible spot for events. That’s about all we can give away right now the rest will be revealed as the year rolls on. We couldn’t be more excited and grateful for the incredible support from our guests and clients. We’re also deeply thankful to CEO Nardi, The PMQ Race Club Board of Directors, and the wider racing community for their continued trust in us. Their support has been

instrumental in our growth, and we look forward to many more exciting events. Watch this space.

For people interested in engaging your services for an upcoming event, how can they get in touch?

To book the event space at the Race Club Venue, call 6581 1964. For all your catering needs, there are a few ways you can get in touch with us. You can email Stef at stef@ charbarcatering.com, or visit our website and fill out the contact form. The contact form helps us understand a little about your event before we have our first catch-up. We’d love to show you around and discuss how we can help celebrate your upcoming event.

Contact Moorebeer for small to medium functions.

Thank you both. Interview: Sarah Baker.

The countdown to the 2025 election is officially underway, and I’m honoured to once again have been selected by our community to run as your Independent candidate.

Our community has faced decades of neglect from career politicians and major parties. I’m here to focus on the issues that matter most to us - cost of living, housing affordability, healthcare, reliable mobile reception, and protecting the places we love.

We can’t rely on the same people who created these problems to fix them - we need real change, with representation that’s truly powered by our community.

Why I’m Running

I’m running because I’m tired of watching things get worse. Our healthcare system is crumbling, the cost of basics like groceries and petrol keeps climbing, and we’re yet to see meaningful climate action. Meanwhile, housing is becoming increasingly unaffordable, mobile reception is patchy at best, and many of the places we love are under increasing threat.

As a nurse, healthcare leader, and emergency responder, I’ve spent my life advocating for people in their most vulnerable moments - whether it’s providing compassionate care at the bedside, leading teams through healthcare crises, or coordinating emergency responses during times of disaster. These experiences have taught me the importance of collaboration, resilience, and always putting people first.

I know how to listen deeply, act decisively, and solve problems under pressure. It’s that experience and dedication I aim to bring to representing this beautiful region.

A FRESH APPROACH TO POLITICS

For too long, our voices have been ignored. Career politicians have allowed housing affordability to spiral out of control, neglected healthcare, and failed to deliver critical infrastructure.

Independents, however, have a proven track record of delivering for their communities.

while doubling investment in public housing in Tasmania.

As an independent, I’m not tied to party factions or big business. My only obligation is to you—the people of Cowper.

Helen Haines secured over 50 mobile towers for her region, and Jacqui Lambie pushed for the Royal Commission into Veteran Suicide

As an Independent, I’m not tied to party factions or big business. My only obligation is to you - the people of Cowper. Over the past few months, I’ve met with veterans, farmers, sports coaches, and retirees to

hear their concerns. Your ideas are the foundation of this campaign, and together we’re building a platform that reflects Cowper’s real priorities.

WHAT I STAND FOR

I’m still building my policy platform based on your feedback, here are some of my priorities:

• Healthcare: Fight for more funding for hospitals, aged care, and mental health services. Cut wait times and improve rural access.

• Housing: Build more affordable homes, expand public housing, and create construction apprenticeships.

• Cost of Living: Hold corporations accountable for price gouging, and redirect handouts to services like childcare, education, and healthcare.

for safer communities.

• Local Growers: Invest in food manufacturing, support growers, and strengthen supply chains to expand local markets.

I’ll work to eliminate mobile blackspots and ensure every household and business has fast, affordable, and dependable internet.

• Connectivity: Eliminate mobile blackspots and ensure reliable, affordable internet for homes and businesses.

• NDIS: Simplify applications, ensure timely support, and uphold dignity for people with disabilities.

• Domestic Violence: Strengthen local services, create safe spaces, and educate

• Climate Action: Cut emissions and prepare communities for floods and bushfires.

• Protecting the places we love: Safeguard natural landscapes and promote sustainable tourism to preserve our region for generations to come.

Last election, over 1,500 of us made Cowper the most marginal Nationals electorate in the country. We knocked on doors, made phone calls, and spoke to people about the issues that mattered - and it worked.

This year, with even more volunteers, supporters, and ideas from across Cowper, we’re ready to take the next step and make history.

Authorised by C Heise, Coffs Harbour NSW 2450

WHY WE DESERVE BETTER

Cowper is an extraordinary place, but we face significant challenges. We’re one of the poorest electorates in Australia, with high rates of chronic health conditions and low educational attainment. We’re also on the front line of climate change, with increasing risks of floods and bushfires.

We need leadership that understands these challenges and fights for solutions tailored to our region. That’s exactly what I’m here to do.

LET’S CREATE A FUTURE WE ALL SHARE

This campaign is about creating a better future for our community. From fixing our healthcare system to tackling the housing crisis, supporting local farmers, and protecting the places we love, we’re building a platform that reflects the values and needs of our region.

Visit caz4cowper.com.au to share your ideas or join our incredible team. Together, we can create a future we all share.

Players THE

The Players Theatre Inc. has launched into the new year firing on all cylinders!

We held auditions for Bonnie and Clyde: The Musical and rehearsals are now well underway, with Kate Simpson leading the production in her directorial debut. We are gearing up to host the One Act Play Festival in June, which is always an incredible showcase of amateur theatre talent from all around Australia.

Clue: On Stage opens on the 28th of February, directed by Paul Bishop. Based on the iconic 1985 Paramount cult comedy movie starring Tim Curry and Christopher Lloyd, which was inspired by the classic Hasbro board game CLUEDO, the play Clue: On Stage is a hilarious farce-meets-murder mystery. The tale

begins at a remote mansion, Boddy Manor, where an anonymous host has invited six mysterious guests who assemble for an unusual and unforgettable dinner party where murder and blackmail are on the menu. When their host turns up dead, they all become suspects.

Led by Wadsworth the butler, the guests are given aliases including Miss Scarlet, Professor Plum, Mrs. White, Mr. Green, Mrs. Peacock and Colonel Mustard. Though discouraged from revealing personal information, it is soon discovered that all of them have fallen victim to the same blackmailer, Mr Boddy, their very host of the evening.

Each is presented with a weapon (dagger, pipe,

wrench, revolver, rope and candlestick) and an option: pay their extortionist double or kill the innocent butler. Follow the dinner guests through a madcap, slapstick evening full of murder, mystery, and laughs as they all race to puzzle out the killer amongst criminals as the body count stacks up. Clue: On Stage is the ultimate comedy whodunnit that will leave both cult-fans and newcomers in stitches and keep them guessing until the final twist as they try to figure out… WHO did it? WHERE? And with WHAT? We simply cannot wait for you to see this one - the cast, costumes, light and set come together to create an incredible show! With tickets starting at just $23, this isn’t one to miss!

SHOOT FOOTBALL

TAKES TO THE SKIES FOLLOWING A LIFE-CHANGING UK TOUR FOR LOCAL YOUTH.

SHOOT Football is an innovative concept in football coaching providing a professional environment suited to helping junior players reach their full potential as footballers. FOCUS caught up with well respected coach and mentor Tony Judge about his passion for the game and his interest in shaping talented young players into becoming future champions.

As a former football player himself, Tony has represented the NSW Institute of Sport in the NSL Youth League before furthering his career in the UK for Clyde FC, Queens Park in Scotland and in the NSW Premier League for the Macarthur Rams and Sutherland Sharks.

Hi Tony, thanks so much for your time and congratulations. You have just returned from a carefully curated UK tour for your Under 11 and Under 13 teams offering an extraordinary experience for local players from Port Macquarie to train with some of the world’s most respected clubs and coaches. How was the trip? Can you tell us about some of your highlights regarding the opportunity you have provided for young players to be exposed to the world of football at an elite level?

Thanks Sarah. It’s been a big couple of months organising the tour, but it’s been incredibly rewarding to see everything come together. Watching our local players experience football in the UK has been truly amazing. Providing these young athletes the chance to play, train, and watch football at some of the world’s most iconic venues is a dream come true - one that I hope inspires them to continue growing in the game.

The players had the privilege of visiting Premier League academies such as Leicester

City, Wolverhampton, Everton, Fulham, and Tottenham, where they trained under professional coaches and experienced what it takes to perform at the elite level. Attending matches, including FA Cup and Premier League games, was another unforgettable highlight. Watching Manchester United at Old Trafford was especially memorable - a once-in-a-lifetime experience that will undoubtedly stay with the players for years to come.

This tour was about more than just football; it was about giving these young players a glimpse into what’s possible and showing them the dedication and passion required to succeed at the highest levels.

Your commitment to empowering local youth through football goes far beyond the game itself, but also reflects your deep passion for the game and the transformative power it has in shaping young lives for the future. What drew you to the game initially and how has it shaped who you are today?

for the game. Playing football has given me countless memorable experiences and forged lifelong friendships.

One of the aspects I’ve always cherished is being part of a team. There’s something incredibly fulfilling about working together and helping others succeed alongside you. Now, as a coach, I have the opportunity to give back to the game that has given me so much.

Dedication, hard work, and resilience are essential, both in football and in life. These experiences helped me realise that setbacks are opportunities to grow and that leadership begins with believing in your own potential.

Beyond keeping young people active, coaching allows me to play a role in their personal development. Watching players not only improve their football skills but also build confidence, teamwork, resilience, and other essential life skills is incredibly rewarding. For me, football has always been more than just a game - it’s a vehicle for growth, connection, and opportunity.

Football has been a significant part of my life for as long as I can remember. Growing up, it was a family passion that sparked my own love

As well as football and through your teachings, SHOOT Football Academy also helps to build character, discipline, and resilience in the next generation and instils core values of teamwork, perseverance and goal setting, all while showing kids the incredible possibilities that come with dedication and hard work. What have

been some of the hardest lessons you have learned in your formative years as a young footballer?

Growing up playing football in regional NSW provided me with constant lessons that shaped who I am today. One of the most important was learning to believe in myself, especially when competing against players from larger metropolitan areas. That self-belief became a cornerstone of my development, helping me to stay focused and confident, even in challenging situations.

With confidence came the ability to step into leadership roles, both on and off the field. Football taught me how to inspire and motivate others, work collaboratively within a team, and lead by example. These skills weren’t just about winning games - they were about fostering trust, perseverance, and accountability.

Another valuable lesson was the understanding that success doesn’t come overnight. Dedication, hard work, and resilience are essential, both in football and in life. These experiences helped me realise that setbacks are opportunities to grow and that leadership begins with believing in your own potential. Your vision also extends to nurturing the next generation of coaches and sports professionals. As part of this recent tour, you have created a unique opportunity for one of your alumni students to travel alongside the team as an assistant coach, gaining invaluable hands-on experience advancing their career path in coaching

and sports-related fields. This opportunity offers them a chance to learn the intricacies of coaching at a high level and build a foundation for a future career in sports science and exercise coaching. Why is it important for you to not only foster the growth of young athletes but also invest in the development of those who aspire to become leaders in the world of sports?

Opportunities to pursue a professional playing career in football can be limited, but the sport offers a diverse range of pathways for young people to stay involved and thrive. At SHOOT Football, it’s incredibly rewarding to see our young coaches develop and progress in their journey. By investing in their growth, we hope to guide them toward fulfilling and meaningful careers in sports-related fields.

One of the most gratifying aspects is watching former academy players transition into coaching roles. Seeing our camp coaches instil the same values they were exposed to during their time as players is a testament to the positive impact of our programs. This continuity not only strengthens the SHOOT Football community but also ensures that the next generation of players benefits from the knowledge and experiences of those who came before them. By nurturing aspiring coaches and sports professionals, we aim to create a ripple effect that extends beyond the field - developing leaders who inspire others and contribute to the broader sports industry. For us, it’s about fostering a lifelong connection to football

and providing opportunities for personal and professional growth.

Enrolments for SHOOT Football Academy 2025 are now open. Can you tell us a little about the programs on offer and how people can register their interest?

The 2025 SHOOT Football Academy program is now open for enrolments, offering a range of exciting opportunities for young players. Trials for the Academy will take place in February for age groups Under 8, 10, 12, 14, and 15–18, as well as for Under 15 girls. Academy sessions focus on individual skill development and tactical training, running 1–2 times per week. The program begins on February 17 and runs through to September.

Our popular School Holiday Camps are held during the first week of each school holiday, from Monday to Thursday, 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM. These camps are designed to enhance individual skills through focused training and fun small-sided competitions.

Registrations for the holiday camps open online from Week 5 of each school term. For the Academy program, expressions of interest can also be submitted through our website: www. shootfootball.com.au or contact Tony on 0405 152 920. We look forward to welcoming new and returning players to SHOOT Football Academy in 2025!

Thanks Tony. Interview: Sarah Baker.

I’m a creative person. I’m a person who likes change, but not change for change’s sake. Changes take time, effort and for a change to be worthwhile, often it takes a lot of planning.

Now I don’t know if this month’s topic came to me because we’re already one month into a New Year, but as a creative, entrepreneurial person I simply don’t stop thinking. After all, our livelihood depends on keeping up with, or, even at times being in front of the “pack”. It’s true that there is no new idea under the sun, just maybe it hasn’t been implemented exactly like you are thinking of doing. But this month I have been musing about how to get excited and inspired in order to get the best out of the year ahead, when it comes to our business.

Inspiration can come in many forms, through a cleverly edited instagram post, a beautifully curated page in a stylish magazine or by hearing someone else’s story and applying it to your own situation. For me all those things play a role from time to time, but my real inspiration comes from getting out and exploring. Leaving the thoughts and cares of the day to day behind and simply immersing myself in new surroundings.

As an Aussie, while there are so many positives about living on a big island on our

own, I really do envy those who have the ability to easily cross a border and experience a completely different landscape, architecture, culture and cuisine. For those of us who have lived our entire lives in Oz, the novelty of jumping on a ferry in England and ending up in France only an hour or so later is simply matchless. In fact, the distance between England and Paris is less than it is from Port to Taree… yet despite the physical closeness, their cultures are obviously worlds apart. Now I know a lot of my customers have been able to re-enter the travel scene since the world stopped in 2020, but my travel bug hasn’t been fed properly since 2019. Part of the reason for that is that the face of retail has changed since pre-covid times. It’s harder than ever to predict what a “normal” season is going to look like, which means escaping and leaving “The Girls” to it is a little harder for us now than it has been in the past. As a business owner, I’ve been ebbing and flowing with the industry for well over a decade now, so in uncertain times I simply tighten my lifejacket and hold on. However, I do fear for those in our industry who are relying on floaties to help keep them above the waterline. It’s tough out there, and in order to weather the storm, we need to hang

on. Having said that, sometimes when you are in the middle of literal rough seas it’s hard to remember that the ocean is massive and that where you are is just one little part in a very big sea. It’s inevitable that the conditions will change, we just have to hang in there and ride the waves until it does.

This is true for business too. Sometimes when times feel unbearably tough, and you are being tossed about from every angle, trying to keep your head “above water” can feel impossible. Sometimes though a quick chat with someone you trust, or a little weekend away from your business may be all you need to realise that there are bigger things out there, and that with fresh eyes and a bit of determination you can hold on until the storm passes.

So as we all brace for what 2025 has in store for us, if it goes as fast as the first month has gone, we will be planning our end of year parties before we know it! That said, would it surprise you to know I have already ordered some of our international brands for December deliveries? And you wonder why I am always thinking, planning, adjusting and changing… it’s in my DNA and it’s the only way we thrive as a business. Bring on 2025. We are READY!!!

MIKAYLA HOULDSWORTH

Hi Mikayla. Can you share the story behind We Made This – Art & Floral Preservation and what inspired you to begin your journey into creating art?

It all began in the garden shed, which I’ve since claimed as my personal "She Shed." My older sister was experimenting with a new art medium - resin - and invited me to join her. Until then, I had not been interested in art, likely because I was too self-conscious to risk embarrassment in front of my high school peers. I was known as the sporty one, not the arty one. But after graduating, I felt free to try and be creative, and I quickly became hooked! Encouraged by friends, I decided to have a stall at the local markets. The experience was a success which gave me the confidence to apply for the upcoming ArtWalk event. I was

Mikayla Houldsworth didn’t consider herself a ‘creative’ until she decided to throw the idea of perfection to the wind and have a go at resin art. She is now constantly evolving her art practice and her beautiful pieces are regularly available at Macquarie Waters Boutique Hotel and Kaleidoscope in Port Central. Mikayla also takes custom commissions, a popular option being preserving your own wedding flowers as a lovely keepsake.

assigned a spot at the Macquarie Waters Boutique Hotel, where I set up my stall for the week and to my surprise, they asked me to stay! They built a custom bookshelf in their reception area, and I’ve had a permanent display there ever since.

Where do you draw a lot of inspiration from?

My art is inspired by nature, particularly the flowers in my mother’s garden and the beaches of our local area. I was born and raised in Port Macquarie so it holds a special place in my heart.

My art is inspired by nature, particularly the flowers in my mother’s garden and the beaches of our local area. I was born and raised in Port Macquarie so it holds a special place in my heart. I love creating ocean-inspired gifts that tourists and

beach lovers can take home as a keepsake. Similarly, I enjoy crafting pieces featuring flowers that symbolise the love people share for one another, it’s truly something I find special. Selling my art has also given me the chance to reflect on the loved ones who support me, such as my mother, my husband, and my friends, who have helped with markets and large orders. They inspire me to keep putting myself out there and experimenting.

Continued over...

You make a lot of functional art pieces, things that are both beautiful and useful. Can you tell us about this choice and your favourite mediums to work with?

I understand that not everyone has the room or budget for large artworks in their home, so I enjoy creating functional pieces that come in a variety of price ranges and sizes to suit everyone. My most popular item at Macquarie Waters Boutique Hotel are my ocean clocks, and at Kaleidoscope in Port Central, my handmade jewellery. Both serve practical functions beyond their aesthetic appeal. Resin is the medium I am most experienced in but I love branching out and exploring many different art forms. Some others that I love are watercolour, pyrography and cyanotype. You can take people’s wedding flowers or other sentimental flowers and create beautiful keepsakes. What do you enjoy most about this particular process? What I enjoy most is the pure joy and gratitude that the owners of these flowers show when I return their finished products. I have seen brides shed a tear when they see their wedding bouquets preserved. These pieces are not just home décor items; they hold precious memories. My favorite part of the process is when I de-mould a large piece,

such as an orb. Some moulds require working backwards, so when it's time to de-mould, I feel a rush of excitement and nervousness, hoping it turns out as planned. Can you share a memorable project or commission that was particularly meaningful?

My most popular item at Macquarie Waters Boutique Hotel are my ocean clocks, and at Kaleidoscope in Port Central, my handmade jewellery.

The most meaningful experience was preserving my own wedding bouquet, which inspired me to offer the same service to other brides. I understand how special it is to keep your wedding flowers, why not preserve them so you can admire them for more than a few days? My most memorable commission was when I was asked to create clocks for all the timeshare rooms at Macquarie Waters Boutique Hotel. It was an honour to fulfill such a large order, and it is touching to know that years later, they are still being enjoyed by guests.

What does your creative process look like, from concept to the final piece?

For commissions, the process involves a lot of communication with the customer. I

like to give them the opportunity to customise their piece as much as possible. Usually, this involves them giving me a rough idea of what they want, and I then provide designs to choose from based on what I think suits their flowers best. This may include using particular colours, adding words, dates, photos or handwritten notes. The options are virtually endless. Being able to offer completely personalised work is what excites me the most about commissions, each one ends up being a truly one-of-a-kind keepsake. After weeks of drying the flowers, arranging, pouring multiple layers of resin and sanding, the piece is ready for delivery. The process is a bit different when creating items for my displays because I have full creative control. I love the entire process, from growing my own flowers from seeds, drying them and then preserving them in jewellery, hair accessories, and home décor items. Forming an idea and seeing it come to fruition after such a lengthy process is very rewarding.

You guide art classes and are pursuing a

Diploma in Art Therapy. How has teaching enriched your artistic journey?

Teaching was intimidating at first, but now it feels like I'm invited to everyone's parties! My favourite thing I have noticed when teaching is that in just about every class, someone will say something along the lines of, "We were all taught the same, but they all turned out so different!". It's such a joyful realisation that we all have our own unique creative voices. I also love when a student says they are pleasantly surprised with the outcome. I like to remind everyone that they need to trust in the process and enjoy it. Art is not just about the finished outcome and should not be our sole focus. I believe we are all creative if we are brave enough to give it a go. Sharing these sentiments and my joy of art really inspires me to continue on my own artistic journey. What excites you most about the intersection of art and therapy?

Before I started teaching, I had struggled with my own feelings around not being creative, but I had no idea how many people shared those same feelings. Many students are scared to put paint on a canvas because they fear "messing up." Art therapy is an opportunity

to forget about the finished product and simply enjoy each stage of the process. The intention is not to create a masterpiece, which removes much of the fear and brings back the childlike joy of creating. I found the art therapy lessons I took to be a fantastic way to express myself, relax, experiment, and increase creativity. I look forward to sharing this experience with students in the future.

What are your aspirations for the future of your art practice and ‘We Made This’?

My main goals are to keep learning and experimenting. I am constantly trying new things, so keep an eye on my social media or pop into Kaleidoscope, as it is ever-changing. I plan to expand my jewellery line this year

and create a collection for each stage of the wedding process. I'm experimenting with ideas for bridesmaid proposal boxes and watercolour wedding portraits, so watch this space!

Where can we find your artwork, learn more or get in touch?

I currently have my ocean work displayed at Macquarie Waters Boutique Hotel and my floral work on display at Kaleidoscope in Port Central. The best way to reach me is either through social media or email listed below.

NOEL CLEAL

HNoel Cleal is a Rugby League legend. Over his incredible career he has played in the NRL, taken home premierships, represented NSW in the State Of Origin, and represented Australia on the international stage and now Noel has stepped into a new role as President of the Wauchope Blues.

i Noel. Can you share with us your journey in rugby league? What first drew you to the sport, and what were the early years of your playing career like?

Growing up in Warialda, one of 3 sons of a shearer and a cocky’s daughter, sport was a religion of the family. Dad was a boxer and a football player and Mum was an athlete at school who later assisted in the training of young people. We played football in winter and cricket in summer. The toughest football that I played was one-on-one football with my older brother Les in the front yard of our home. We lived in an area of Warialda that was affectionately known as “Poverty Flat”. I played football at school and for Warialda Junior Rugby League until I was 15 and won a handful of pennants on the way. I left school when I was 15 to work on my grandparents’

sheep and cattle property, where I was taught how to shear sheep and work as a farrier. I developed an allergy to horses and couldn’t work with them anymore so I decided to try rugby league as a career. My brother Les and I left Warialda in 1975 and travelled around the bush playing for various country rugby league teams including West Lismore, Wondai (Qld), Sawtell and Scone. We managed to win the Clayton’s Cup at Sawtell in 1978 and Scone in 1979.

Prior to the 1979 grand final I received a phone call from Bob Fulton and John Quayle asking me to come down and join the Roosters. Bob Fulton became my coach for 9 years in the NRL during my time with both the Roosters and Manly Sea Eagles. I later found out that Kerry Packer had called the editor of the local newspaper before he rang John Quayle to get them to consider signing me for the Roosters. Bob Fulton and Kerry Packer became very good friends of mine. After 3

successful years at the Roosters, I moved to Manly in 1983 to continue my association with Bob Fulton. We managed to win the grand final in 1987.

You had an incredible career in rugby league. What are some of the standout moments or achievements you’re most proud of?

My career contained a lot of “firsts” and “lasts”. I played in the first NSW team to win a State of Origin series in 1985 and then in 1986 we were the first team from either NSW or Qld to clean sweep an Origin series. I was fortunate enough to play in 12 State of Origin games and represented Australia in 8 tests. The “lasts” were the final game for NSW in 1981 when we only played one State of Origin game before it became the best of a 3 game series in 1982. I also played in the last Rugby League Test at the SCG in 1986 as well as the last Rugby League Grand Final at the SCG in 1987.

Growing up as a kid in Warialda, one of my greatest wishes was to play in the now NRL competition on the hallowed turf of the SCG. One of my proudest moments was to achieve this playing with my brother Les when we were both at the Roosters in 1982.

After your playing days, you transitioned into coaching and management roles. What motivated you to stay involved in the sport?

After completing my NRL career I moved to the United Kingdom in 1989 as a player initially, and then as coach of Hull FC winning the premiership in 1991-92. When I returned home to Australia I became involved in supporting the local Warialda Wombats. It was after this that I received a call from Parramatta Eels asking me to become their recruitment manager. Over the following 25 years working at the Eels, Manly Sea Eagles and Canterbury Bulldogs, I was able to mentor young aspiring NRL players, many of whom went on to become NRL players in their own right. It was very satisfying to see players come from bush towns such as Wee Waa to go on to become well known footballers in the NRL. One important aspect of my career that I tried to instill in younger players was to have a very strong work ethic, don’t complain and enjoy

yourself.

What inspired your move to Wauchope, and what do you enjoy about the grassroots rugby league culture in regional areas like Wauchope?

One important aspect of my career that I tried to instil in younger players was to have a very strong work ethic, don’t complain and enjoy yourself.

About 12 years ago I met my wife Michele who lived in Wauchope. This led to me moving up here when Michele and I purchased a farm at Lower Pappinbarra. It has always been a passion of mine to be involved at a grassroots level in local communities, assisting wherever I can to help promote and develop the game and assist clubs with fundraising to help them stay viable.

What led you to take on the role of President of the Wauchope Senior Football Club?

About 3 years ago, I was approached by Beau White, my two stepsons Pat and Bryce, and a number of the playing group to get involved with the Wauchope Blues and take them in a different direction. In 2024 I became Vice President of the club, moving to President this year.

What are your goals and vision for the club under your leadership? How do you plan to draw on your experience to benefit the club and its players?

We currently have 5 teams playing under the Wauchope Blues banner giving over 100 young people the opportunity to play rugby league. With a strong committee of 20 people helping to take the club forward, I am also ably supported by Vice President Darryl Mason and Secretary/Treasurer Lisa Hoffman. The club is also very fortunate to have major sponsors such as Bago Tavern, Kazac Civil, Bears Plastering and Sundial Dental that make the job of running a football club so much easier. Many other local businesses have also thrown their support behind the club which was evident in our recent sponsorship drive. This demonstrates that the local community is very supportive of the direction that the Blues are moving in and emphasises that rugby league is a game that brings the Wauchope community together.

How can members of the Wauchope community get involved or support the club?

The Wauchope community can become involved with the Blues by purchasing a Supporters Club membership and also by buying tickets in money raising ventures. This year we have a major raffle running over the whole season which consists of 3 nights accommodation at the The Pullman in Homebush, 2 tickets into the Directors’ Lounge at Randwick races on October 4th and 2 tickets into the NRL Corporate Box at the 2025 grand final on October 5th. Thanks Noel.

The Port Macquarie Pirates Rugby Club has been busy planning their inaugural tour of New Zealand for their Under 16’s sides which will take place later this year. Tour Manager Blair Hancock, U16 Boys Coach Adrian Lombardo, and U16 Girls Coach Lisa Vogel have filled us in on their goals for the tour and how we can support them on their way.

What inspired the idea for the Port Macquarie Pirates under-16 teams to embark on this international rugby tour to New Zealand?

The original idea for a U16 overseas tour came from a long-term member of the Pirates Rugby Club four years ago. He planted the seed and we have managed to pull together some key tour committee members to create the momentum to make it happen for the players in 2025.

Why is this age group (under-16) such a critical stage for fostering continued participation in rugby and team sports?

This age group is at a critical stage in their development, where many young athletes are at high risk of discontinuing participation in team sports. By offering an experience as

enriching as an international rugby tour, the club aims to keep these players engaged and motivated, reinforcing their love for the game and the benefits that come with being part of a team.

Beyond improving rugby skills, what are the key personal and team development goals you hope the players will achieve during this tour?

Teamwork will be at the core of this tour, as the players navigate the challenges of competing in a new country together. The shared experiences, from intense matches against New Zealand’s junior teams to group training sessions with local coaches, will strengthen the bonds among the players. They will learn to rely on each other, communicate effectively, and support one another, both on the field and off. These experiences will enhance their teamwork, trust, and unity, which are essential not only in rugby but in all areas of life. Moreover,

the tour will emphasise the importance of community participation.

What can the players expect from competing against some of New Zealand’s top junior teams, and how will these matches help them grow as athletes?

The teams will be paired with New Zealand rugby teams closer to the tour date. We are also arranging coaching sessions with professional rugby coaches during the trip. The committee has established contacts within the Auckland Rugby Union and Bay of Plenty Rugby Union, so additional opportunities are being explored. This exposure to a higher level of rugby will help the players develop and grow as athletes. What off-field activities are planned for the players during the tour, and what impact do you hope these experiences will have on them?

Other experiences currently planned are

activities that include: All Blacks experience, Eden Park Tour, Hobbiton Film Set, White Water Rafting, Gondola and Luge, Saltwater Hot Pools and a Maori Cultural experience.

ey’ll gain new perspectives that will help them grow as players, not just in skills but in leadership and mental toughness.

How do you see the shared experiences of this tour strengthening the relationships between players, coaches, and the broader club community?

The shared experiences of this tour will provide players, coaches, and the broader club community with opportunities to bond outside of the usual training and competition environments. By participating in activities together, such as the All Blacks experience, cultural tours, and outdoor adventures, everyone will have the chance to connect on a personal level, fostering mutual respect and trust. These shared moments will create lasting memories that strengthen the sense of camaraderie and unity within the team and the broader club, enhancing collaboration, communication, and support across all levels of the community.

Are there any fundraising activities planned to support the tour, and how can the Port Macquarie community get involved?

The team has already begun fundraising with a Bunnings BBQ and several Friday meat raffles at Tacking Point Tavern (a key

sponsor of the Pirates club). Additional fundraising efforts include a ‘Luxury Lord Howe Island Getaway’ raffle supported by Eastern Air Services & Arajilla Retreat, a sportsman’s lunch, donation opportunities, and potential sponsorships tailored to the tour.

What lasting impact do you hope this tour will have on the players, both as athletes and as individuals?

We hope this tour will leave a lasting impact on the players by enhancing both their athletic abilities and personal growth. As athletes, the experiences and challenges they face together will build resilience, teamwork, and a deeper understanding of the game. They’ll gain new perspectives that will help them grow as players, not just in skills but in leadership and mental toughness. On a personal level, the cultural experiences and shared adventures will help them develop greater empathy, confidence, and a sense of responsibility to their teammates and the broader community. Ultimately, we hope the tour fosters a sense of unity and pride that stays with them, shaping them into not only better athletes but well-rounded individuals.

New Zealand is known for its strong rugby culture. How do you think playing in such a rugby-rich environment will

inspire the players?

Playing in New Zealand, a country with such a rich rugby culture, will undoubtedly inspire the players by immersing them in an environment where rugby is not just a sport, but a way of life. Being able to experience the passion, history, and pride that Kiwis have for the game will give the players a deeper appreciation for the sport. It will motivate them to elevate their own standards, both on and off the field, and inspire them to embody the values of hard work, commitment, and respect that are central to New Zealand’s rugby culture. The opportunity to interact with local players and coaches will also provide invaluable learning experiences, pushing the players to grow and develop their skills in ways they may not have imagined before.

Are there plans to make international tours like this a regular part of the club’s program?

The Port Macquarie Pirates Rugby Club is establishing a lasting tradition with a biennial tour to New Zealand for the Under-16 boys and girls teams. This initiative, inspired by the club's inaugural 2025 tour, aims to provide future generations of U16 players with the same enriching experiences every two years, fostering growth, camaraderie, and a deep connection to the sport.

Thanks. Interview by Sarah Baker.

ROD FRANKLIN

Hi Rod, please tell us a bit about your early life and your connection to Wauchope.

I was born and schooled in Narrabri and learnt cellar operations at 14 working in the Tattersalls Hotel under Ron Leeson. Rugby league is one of my great loves in life and I originally played for Narrabri before being lured east to play for Nambucca. I worked at the Golden Sands, then later at the Nambucca Leagues Club, which incidentally just burned down in late January, which is really sad to see. From there Graham Buckley, who was Wauchope’s coach, approached me to play for the Blues, which I did from 1994 to 1997. After a couple of years away in Mullumbimby and Junee, I came back to the area and the Blues around the year 2000. It was then I was offered the role of licensee at the Hastings Hotel, which I proudly did for 8 years.

deal in premium spirits - the main being Jack Daniels. I service a large area from Illuka in the north to Karuah in the south and Tamworth in the west, so I get to meet with people from all walks of life, which I really enjoy.

Have you got any stories about the hotel from your time behind the bar?

Well, for starters, the layout was very different back then with the current restaurant location a grassy outside area with a pool!

Sporting clubs come to celebrate wins or forget losses and also hold community ra es which generates must needed funds for them.

I was working when the last of the timber sleeper cutters were around and those guys got very thirsty! I’ll never forget not being able to see the floor for all the yellow envelopes. Explainer for the younger generation - they all got paid in cash and it was given to them in those yellow envelopes!

If you could share one piece of advice or a message with the current team at Hastings Hotel, what would it be?

Now I’m a sales rep for Brown Forman, who

The staff already do a fantastic job, so my advice is simple: always smile and be polite

with ALISTAIR FLOWER

MANAGING DIRECTOR OF FLOWER HOTELS

because that’s what the customer will remember ahead of anything else.

What was the atmosphere like in the pub and how has it changed over the years?

The atmosphere was, and still is great because everyone knows each other, and they come together for a chat and a laugh. Sporting clubs come to celebrate wins or forget losses and also hold community raffles which generates must needed funds for them.

The Wauchope community is growing, as is the cost of living, but at the Hastings people can come to enjoy the food or watch sport or just have a chin wag, and with the newly renovated bar you can do so in luxury.

What’s your involvement in the Wauchope community these days?

I have been involved with the Wauchope Blues for my whole time here and also as a sales rep I generally help sporting groups or charities with prizes regularly. I think it’s important to give back to the community whenever you can.

And lastly, what’s the best thing about Wauchope?

The best part about Wauchope is its people. The friendliness and outgoing nature of the locals keeps me here. Not to mention their competitive nature, just love that as well!

Palate

with LOU PERRI

FROM THE STUNNED MULLET

Every now and again we all need to pinch ourselves, or maybe just refrain from staring straight ahead and look around for a minute or two…

It’s always at this time of year that I remember just what an amazing part of the world we live in as I reflect on the departures en masse of the many visitors that quadruple our population over the peak holiday season.

As the crowds vacate our pristine beaches and attractions, leaving it all for us locals to enjoy once again, (with the glorious summer sun still shining down on us) - it’s a timely reminder to take a deep breath and just be extremely grateful to be here, right now. Sure life gets busy again around now, (or perhaps there was no ‘holiday’ break at all), but we lucky ducks get to stay right here whilst the summer fun seekers sadly have to schlepp on back to the big smoke till the next vacay.

Having had family visiting from Canada this Christmas has further crystallised the ‘lucky ducks’ concept. Seeing Port Mac through their eyes has added another dimension of

LITERALLY

Paradise

appreciation. Even just the mere reality being able to be outdoors all year around in these parts is a huge deal for those that are held captive by extreme cold. Something we take for granted to be sure, but what a vital role having the choice plays when it come to our overall wellbeing.

When you really notice the pure delight that visitors experience in our region, it is a wakeup call to not take for granted the freedom that we have here to enjoy this place ourselves.

And of course the beach…. the absolute delight of plunging into the clear blue waters and drying off on the soft sand. A simple pleasure and we all know it is a way to instantly rinse away the stresses of the day but - experience it through the eyes of somebody that has never jumped into the ocean on Christmas day and you realise how extremely wonderful it really is.

When you really notice the pure delight that visitors experience in our region, it is a wakeup call to not take for granted the freedom that we have here to enjoy this place ourselves.

And it isn’t just the obvious with stunning beaches and waterways, but the place itself. Best climate in Australia, a thriving and bustling coastal community with great cafes, restaurants, and retail. A place where there’s something for both young and old and everyone in between. Sure sometimes we might crave a bit more action and perhaps a more robust nightlife, but it seems like a wellworn phrase uttered by many of us after a trip to the city….”it was fun, but it’s so nice to be back home!”.

Whilst we love the buzz for a short stretch of time, we remember the struggle is real in the city living – traffic jams and road ragers, pollution and that general sense of survival of the fittest. It’s a race that we happily get to dip our toes into but get to avoid full immersion - living here in this beautiful slice of Mid North Coast NSW. It’s literally paradise!

Welcome to Drift Bar Cafe Restaurant, where culinary delights meet a cosy atmosphere! Whether you’re craving our classic offerings, chef specials or exploring our diverse vegetarian options, we have something to tantalise every palate. Bring the whole family along - our kids' meals, complete with an exciting activity pack and a delicious ice

cream cup, are just $12, making them perfect for a fun and affordable school holiday treat. And that's not all! Our much anticipated spring menu is on the horizon, promising fresh, seasonal flavours that will delight your senses. Stay tuned and keep an eye on our socials for updates. Come drift with us and experience casual dining at its best!

ESmashed Avo!

verybody's favourite... or at least a favourite of the MidNorth Coast. In the week before Christmas, Growers Market delivered over 7000 avocados, so it's clear we like avocados, but do you know all the varieties you eat? The most popular avocados are Hass, Reed and Shepard but how do you pick a good one? Well, when in doubt be sure to ask your friendly greengrocer to help you pick a nice avo and what they'll tell you is...

Hass avocados are everyone's favourite because of their bumpy skin and handy, builtin ripening indicator. Their beautiful green skin turns to a dark shade of almost purple or black when they are ready to eat. They should still be firm but have just the slightest bit of give when you squeeze them, but please don't squeeze them around the belly of the avocado rather use your pointer finger to lightly press next to the stem. You should feel a little give and this way if you do check and it's not ready you won't leave a lasting mark inside your

beautiful avo.

We are so lucky here in Australia to have such an amazing range of fresh produce available all year round and the ability to swap varieties to help fill growing gaps.

Reed avocados are a great substitute for a Hass avocado and many consider this avocado to be the creamiest and smoothest to eat. Reed avocadoes are very different to Hass in that they are a more round shape and their green skin actually goes a lighter colour when ripe with almost a hint of yellow. But the best test for a Reed avocado is not the squeeze it's actually the shake! When a Reed avocado is ready to eat aside from the colour of the skin you can actually shake the avocado next to your ear and you'll hear the seed thumping around inside. At this point the seed has started to dehydrate and separate from the flesh of the fruit so when you open it you won't even need a knife to remove the seed, it will just fall away and then simply scoop out the flesh like an amazing natural butter.

Shepard avocados are the third most common avocado and are mainly used to span the gap in Hass avocadoe but in their own right, they are a great eating fruit. Shepard avocados cop a bad wrap for being

hard to ripen or at least hard to pick when they're ripe. Shepards have less colour change than their other creamy counterparts but they go extremely soft when compared to a Hass so stick to the same method as Hass and press lightly around the stem of the fruit, and don't be alarmed to find them a bit softer than a ripe Hass. A ripe Shepard is about as soft as an overripe or off Hass. Here at Growers Market Port Macquarie, you'll find all three of these fruits on the shelf at different times of the year. We are so lucky here in Australia to have such an amazing range of fresh produce available all year round and the ability to swap varieties to help fill growing gaps. Apart from the price going up and down, most people forget that there was a time in Australia when strawberries were seasonal and not available all year round.

Even better we have the best avocados in the country grown right here in our backyard at Comboyne and surrounding areas. The new season Hass avocados are set to kick off in late March/early April and luckily for us we have a great supply of locally grown Reed avocadoes and Australian Shepard avocados to keep the party going in the meantime.

And remember when in doubt, ask your local greengrocer at the top end of Gordon Street. focus contributor.

Christie Cristoforo and her husband Pete have brought X Golf to Port Macquarie! X Golf is a state-of-the-art indoor golf experience, where golfers of any experience level can enjoy a round of golf from the comfort of a sophisticated all-weather venue that also offers food and beverage and caters to events of all kinds.

Hi Christie. Can you tell us about X Golf Port Macquarie and how this unique concept was introduced to the area?

My husband Pete is a passionate golfer, and while researching golf simulators for our home, he found X-Golf. With another business already under management, we were exploring new opportunities. Pete half-jokingly suggested it to me, expecting I’d brush it off, but when I looked into it, I saw the potential for something exciting in Port Macquarie - and I was in!

X-Golf is basically a state-of-the-art indoor golf experience that blends cutting-edge technology with a full-service bar, and delicious food to complete the experience. Can you explain to our readers who haven’t experienced X Golf what it’s all about? How does your facility stand out

from traditional golf courses or other entertainment venues?

X-Golf allows golfers of all skill levels to play on famous courses from around the world. You can practice, compete, or host eventsthere’s something for everyone.

Unlike traditional courses, our simulators offer real-time data on ball flight, swing analysis, and performance metrics, making them a great tool for improving your game. You can play in different formats, including stroke play, match play, and scramble, either solo or in a tournament.

X-Golf also features a social atmosphere with food, drinks, and event spaces, making it a modern alternative to outdoor golf, perfect for casual play or competitive tournaments. What can visitors expect when they come to X Golf? Can you walk us through a typical experience?

Visitors can expect a fun, immersive experience. When you arrive, our staff will

guide you through the simulator setup, explaining the features and helping you choose a game mode or course suited to your preference and/or skill level.

You’ll use real clubs and balls, with the simulators capturing every detail of your swing and ball flight. The experience is realistic, from tee-off to putting, with instant feedback and no need to collect your balls; our automatic ball retrieval and tee-set up technology does it all for you.

Plus you can enjoy food and drinks while playing, and after the game, you can unwind at the bar, play free pool, or watch others play. How do the simulators recreate the feel of playing on renowned courses?

We use High-Definition Course Mapping, digitally scanning famous golf courses with high-resolution imaging. This creates virtual versions that closely match the real-world layout, terrain, and topography.

Our simulators track every aspect of your shot,

CHRISTIE & PETE CRISTOFORO

including ball speed, trajectory, and spin.

We can also mimic conditions like wind, weather, and altitude, adding authenticity.

OUR GOAL IS TO CREATE A LIVELY, SOCIAL ATMOSPHERE PERFECT FOR HANGING OUT WITH FRIENDS, CELEBRATING EVENTS OR LEARNING MORE ABOUT THE GAME.

Plus, our putting experience is top-notch, with adjustable green speed and slope settings.

Besides playing a round or a few holes, what other activities or services do you offer?

We host a variety of events, including birthdays, corporate functions, and themed competitions like X-League, monthly medals, and one-off events for special occasions like Valentine’s Day, Father's Day or footy finals. We’re also launching women’s-only beginner events soon!

And we’ve partnered with local schools for our 5 or 10-week school sport programs, which has been great for getting kids involved in golf. Our goal is to create a lively, social atmosphere perfect for hanging out with friends, celebrating events or learning more about the game.

Can you share more about the leagues and lessons available? Are they suitable

for all skill levels? Absolutely! Our leagues and competitions are designed for all skill levels.

X-League is a fun, competitive 3v3 indoor golf league run three times a year, with a finals series and a national playoff. The league is handicapped, making it inclusive for all players, and there’s a chance to win an expenses-paid luxe golf trip.

Our Monthly Medal, held on the first Wednesday of each month, features various formats like stroke play, scramble, and match play. It’s perfect for those who want a casual competition.

We also offer group events and certified community coaches for our beginners events and schools.

Your facility includes a full-service bar and food offerings. What are some of the crowd-favourite menu items?

Our pizzas are always a crowd favourite, along with classic bar bites like sliders and boneless chicken pieces. Not to forget our $1 Wing Night on Wednesdays!

When it comes to cocktails, Frosty Fruits take the top spot, followed closely by the Fireball

What kind of feedback have you received from both seasoned golfers and first-time players?

We’ve received great feedback from both golfers and social groups. Players love the variety of courses, especially the chance to "travel the world" and play famous courses they may never get to visit. The weatherproof factor is also appreciated, allowing year-round and late at night play; we're open until 10pm. People enjoy the sophisticated tech and the cool venue, which has a metropolitan feel.

How can people learn more about X Golf or book their first visit?

To book, visit our website, where you’ll find real-time updates on available tee times and bundles for group bookings. We also accept walk-ins, depending on availability.

Pro tip: Weekends and evenings can get busy, so it’s best to book in advance, especially during poor weather. For event bookings, email us at portmacevents@xgolf.com.au.

Stay connected via our official venue Facebook page X-Golf Port Macquarie, our owners Instagram @partee.portmac, or get a feel for our staff and culture on TikTok @pmqgolfnbar. Thanks Christie.

Espresso Martini. My personal favourite is the Peanut Butter Old Fashioned, and of course, nothing beats a cold beer on a hot day while you play - it’s always a winner!

Focus spoke with artist Tim Georgeson about the significance of this unique exhibition experience, and together with fellow artist and collaborator William Barton, looks forward to sharing their artistic expression with an audience.

Hi Tim. Your work is extraordinary. You are a multidisciplinary visual artist working in the mediums of film, photography, installation and sound with a strong focus on environment, climate justice, culture and knowledge. How do your preoccupations and perspectives reflect in your art and how do you seek to inspire others or create change as an artist?

Thank you Sarah. My reflections on how I work and see the world has been shaped by my fascination with the environment, culture and knowledge. I have been on a journey my whole career witnessing

You are well known for your groundbreaking collaborations, most notably with Australian Indigenous artists. Working together for the first time, you and William undertook a significant artistic residency at Bundanon in 2021, composing, recording and experimenting in response to Wodi Wodi Country. Can you share some of your collaborative approaches working with William and a little about the

process of creating The Hidden Theatre. I should mention William is recognised as Australia’s leading didgeridoo player as well as a highly esteemed composer, instrumentalist and vocalist in his own right.

William and I spent days meandering through the landscape of Bunadanon - I captured the sounds of William’s voice, didge and breath.

I was first introduced to William’s music while I was in production creating a new work titled Urritjara, a gripping portrait of the synergy between sound, earth and movement starring Derik Digga Lynch. There was a track called Kalkani that William and his partner Veronique created that triggered so many visceral pulses for me for the film that it ended up being the sound composition for the film.

Curator Sophie O’Brien at Bundanon Trust approached me to create a new work of film and sound about the Bundanon landscape. As soon as I set foot on the land at Bundanon I immediately contacted William and asked him to join me on a residency. William and I spent days meandering through the landscape of Bunadanon - I captured the sounds of William’s voice, didge and breath. This started our journey for the next twelve months creating The Hidden Theatre through our back and forth of responding to one another’s visions. You and William completed your Artist in Residency in Bundanon, on the South Coast of NSW, home to the largest Artist in Residence program of its kind in Australia, created to support creativity and learning in a unique cultural and natural landscape. What have been some of your highlights from this profound experience? As a white male artist who has made a career of observing diverse cultural realities, this work has been seminal in exposing me to a deep meditation on the ancient knowledge

Finally, can you share a little about yours and William’s plans for The Hidden Theatre exhibition at the Glasshouse Gallery throughout February to April 13th. You and William will also host an opening exhibition evening on Friday February 7th. What are you both most looking forward to sharing with an audience and what do you hope an audience will take away from the immersive sound, film and photographic installation experience?

WILLIAM BARTON

Stacey Napper

Stacey and Kirsty Napper are passionate about storytelling, creativity and bringing life to the art of theatre. They started Snappy Productions after being inspired by a play that they felt deeply connected to, so much so that they were compelled to put on their own production of the show here in Port Macquarie. The Swell debuts 21st and 22nd of March 2025 at The Glasshouse Port Macquarie.

What inspired you to start Snappy Productions, and how did the journey begin?

I, Stacey, have had a background in writing plays and co-ordinating productions, from small monologue pieces, live music to a massive event like Carols by Candlelight but that creativity was on hiatus for a while. I still loved storytelling and would write poems and TV pilot ideas (insert laugh!). In February 2024, I went to The Old Fitz in Woolloomoolloo to see a play an internet buddy had directed and they suggested while in Sydney I check it out. I did, and I fell in love with this play,

with the intimacy of it and its rawness. It was a completely different story than we are used to seeing in theatres. I sat in that space and marvelled at all the emotions going through me, and thought, could I actually be crazy and brave enough to do this play? To break out the old toolkit, dust off the director skills and get into the gritty beauty of bringing life to the oldest form of entertainment and storytelling? I loved it so much I wouldn’t tell my wife, Kirsty, anything about it and instead ordered them a copy of the play from London to read and gauge how they felt. I watched Kirsty go through all the emotions and I said, “I want to bring this play to Port Macquarie, I want to get back into that creative space”. When you marry someone who believes in you as much

as they do, Kirsty looked at me and said “what do we have to do?” and we laid out a plan to bring this production to life, and that was the beginning of Snappy Productions.

Can you share a bit about what you're currently working on?

Our first play is the very play I saw in the Old Fitz in March 2024. It is called The Swell written by Isley Lynn and nominated for the Charles Wintour Award. It debuted in London in 2023 to amazing reviews, was award nominated and made its second appearance in Sydney 2024. This is only the third time that this play is being produced world wide. It is a captivating tale that follows three women Annie, Bel and Flo through two different eras

of their lives. It begins when Flo arrives for her best friend Annie’s wedding to Bel, and a love triangle ensues. There are jaw dropping moments and it definitely takes every person on a wave (swell) of emotions. This play will leave you with questions and talking for ages. We decided we wanted our debut play to be for the community in which we live, in more ways than the performance, so 100% of the profits are being donated to Port Macquarie Base Hospital and Out Loud and Proud Port Macquarie. Our brilliant cast have dedicated hours of their time investing into these characters that you can't help but be captivated by. We are so excited. The Swell is

such a captivating play, we can't wait for you to see it. Saturday night is almost sold out so the time is now to get your tickets! Could you walk us through the process of creating a Snappy Productions show, from concept to stage?

I'm looking forward to the audience's reactions, but definitely seeing these wonderful actors who went outside of their comfort zones and took a chance on a grassroots theatre company, on a play they'd never heard of and crafted so beautifully. They deserve it.

With The Swell, we started the company and began the process of liasing with the playwright and The Agency London who were her representation to negotiate the rights to the play. After four months of touring and organising The Glasshouse and smaller parts, in May at 4:30 am I (Stacey) very gleefully signed the contract for our two night performance. We began character development and auditions, being mindful to gather people who were passionate together and create an environment where everyone felt their role and place was valued. We were so lucky with such amazing characters being cast and rehearsals began in November and we have been hitting our rehearsals twice a week. We, as a whole cast and crew, have toured the space, engaged in social get togethers and have had community members volunteer their time and talents to do stage and lighting design, photography, hair and make up and stage management. We are so very lucky to have that support and belief.

Could you tell us a bit about the cast and crew that have been working on this show with you?

Our cast are amazing and diverse. We have talented performers such as Jess Davidson who is a musical and theatre regular full of zest and passion and so funny, the gorgeous April McLennan who studied her natural talent in Sydney at Brent Street and is such a genuine wonderful person professionally and personally, Rhiannon Tange a psychologist who is so naturally talented it's amazing and spent time in high school gracing the drama

stage. Mel Robinson who is a passionate actress with a real deep seated love of the play we are bringing and spent 2020 fighting the devastating bushfires, Rackas Robinson an amazing passionate advocate, mother and community leader. Our crew are incredible volunteers who also make the magic with us. Dan Miller and Dan Parlevliet on stage and lighting design with lengthy experience and passion, Sarah Wright an amazing local photographer, Jaymee Zimmerman who is our stage director, our extremely talented makeup and hair artist Michelle Ingham, and everything else from graphics to sound, scheduling, bookings, production, director, and development is all us. Many hats, one vision.

What are you most looking forward to about seeing this production come to life?

I'm most looking forward to seeing the actors applauded. They have worked so hard and given so much. I'm looking forward to the audience's reactions, but definitely seeing these wonderful actors who went outside of their comfort zones and took a chance on a grassroots theatre company, on a play they'd never heard of and crafted so beautifully. They deserve it.

What are your hopes and dreams for the future of Snappy Productions?

The biggest dream is to bring stories where people can see themselves, their friends or family, pieces of their life that engage and give a sense of belonging whether they are part of the play, production or in the audience. To be a safe space for art, performance and gathering in united creative forces. To keep a space of inclusion and visibility for all people. The ultimate production would be Rent by Jonathan Larson, however keeping at grassroots with unique stories, thoughtprovoking, emotion-fuelled experiences and maintaining a promise to donate from each show to places within our community to better, support, and help nourish the people and the town we love.

Where can we find out more or get in touch?

We are on Facebook and Instagram as Snappy Productions and email at snappyproductions.2444@gmail.com

IN THE

Wedding Garden Bar

6 TH MARCH 2024

Where were you married and why did you choose this location?

We were married at The Garden Bar and Kitchen, Frederickton. We chose this location for the price, convenience (ceremony and reception at the same place), stunning views and once I met Megan and Tom, I knew they were the perfect fit for our wedding.

Did you have a theme for your wedding day, if so tell us all about it. We didn’t have a theme as such, we kept it simple, but elegant - fresh flowers and greenery, candles etc.

What was your favourite part/moment of the day and why? My favourite part of the whole day was having all of our friends and family together and how much we all laughed.

What did you save money on and what did you splurge on? We saved money by decorating the venue ourselves. I used some rugs and pillows that we already had for the kids corner and hired some things like welcome signs.

We splurged on our photographer, I loved her style and her personality was perfect for our day.

What would you say to couples looking to hold their wedding at The Garden bar? I would highly recommend going to check out the Garden Bar and I’m sure once you meet Megan and Tom, you won’t go anywhere else. Their hospitality is next to none, the food is absolutely delicious and the stunning views of the river are unbeatable.

I cannot put into words the feelings and thoughts I have of Mindy. She created the most fun, loving and enjoyable atmosphere for our wedding. She helped me in times of stress- supplying me with confetti because I freaked out and forgot to buy more. She comforted me when needed throughout the journey and she was hands down the best celebrant and MC we could’ve asked for (ultimate hype girl). Every single guest commented on how amazing she was and is. So I highly recommend Mindy you won’t find another like her.

Not enough words to describe how AMAZING Mindy truly is. We connected from 14,000km away & she made the entire process soooo easy & relaxed. She has such an amazing vibe & energy, It’s the best! Our elopement was perfect because of her!

I never knew how special a great celebrant is until I met Mindy! She truly made our day perfect. The way she put together our love story and ceremony was magical. Everyone said that it was the most beautiful ceremony they’ve ever seen, thanks to Mindy. We were lucky enough to book her as our wedding coordinator as well. She made everything run smoothly so we could enjoy this special day together. I truly don’t think there is anyone better or more passionate about their work than Mindy.

Where do I even start. Look no further than Mindy for a celebrant. She’s perfect. Mindy went above and beyond to make sure we had the wedding day of our dreams. Her caring, loving, bubbly and confident personality with a background in wedding and events planning made this whole experience a breeze. So approachable and contactable at the drop of a hat.

Mindy was the perfect puzzle piece on our wedding day. She were so much more than a celebrant – she was our fairy godmother, MC, timekeeper, pal, water (and champagne!!) waitress, emergency hair stylist & beyond. Mindy MADE our day what it was. She ran the show from 12pm when she visited me (the bride) getting ready, all the way through too late in the night when she said goodbye. She married us in the best way possible, with class, humour, fabulous storytelling - yet all the while being so in touch with the emotion of the day. And then her MCing... just fabulous, she ran the day beautifully. Image by: White Design Images

Mindy went above & beyond for us leading up to our wedding & the special day. We couldn’t have imagined our wedding day without her she made everything go so seamless & perfect all while having fun doing it. We are so grateful for Mindy and cannot thank her enough for making our special day about us.

Highly recommend Mindy!! Mindy made our wedding day easy, fun and full of laughter. Mindy helped us through the whole process for our wedding and was great to work with. She definitely made our day, always checking in if we needed anything. Wouldn’t have been the same without her.

Jessica & Jesse

14 TH SEPTEMBER 2024

Where did you first meet? We actually met on Tinder but our first date was at Laurieton pub.

Tell us about the proposal? Jesse proposed to me at Tacking Point Lighthouse on 14th July 2023. We had a picnic dinner and totally took me by surprise! Did you have a theme for your wedding day, if so tell us all about it. We wanted something rustic and simplistic - greens, natural colours and wood.

Where were you married and why did you choose this location? We got married at Cobb and Coach Farm at Herons Creek. The have multiple options for the ceremony space under a big tree, and a rustic shed for the reception with balcony and lots of space for mingling and dancing! We chose this option as it suited our theme and we had the flexibility of decorating it how we liked. We were also able to bring in our own food and drinks which was a big bonus for us!

Who were some of the businesses you worked with to help create your special day? -We had Tru Blu Catering for finger food/ entrees and a good roast for dinner with lots of options!

-We had Emily from Love Kiss Confetti as our celebrant and also our MC!

- Kaidee from The Photo Trail did all our photography!

- Ginger from Beauty By Ginger

- Hair By Holly Elson

What was your favourite part/ moment of the day and why? The favourite part of the day was the 10 minutes Jesse and I had together as bride and groom straight after the ceremony - time for us together to really let it sink in! We then got to mingle with all our guests before heading off for all our photos. What did you save money on and what did you splurge on?

ere honestly wouldn’t be much we would change! Drinks were readily available for those that wanted them and the music was pumping ready for the dance floor with strobe lights!

We saved money on all the decorationsbought second hand or cheap from online stores. All the florals decorations as well as table centrepieces were done by myself and my bridesmaids. We splurged on really important things like photography and the wedding dress!!!

Looking back was there anything that you would do differently or change? There honestly wouldn’t be much we would change! Drinks were readily available for those that wanted them, and the music was pumping ready for the dance floor with strobe lights!

What advice do you have for couples who are getting married in 2025?

Don’t feel afraid to do some things yourself! Do them ahead of time to save some stress - I did all floral arrangements months before the wedding and put them in air tight plastic

containers to keep them from dust! Have a time line for the day for yourself and make sure other people know about it! Not just the celebrant and photographer, but also your mother and bridesmaids! Many hands make light work! Thanks Jessica.

Wear What to

Ok, you receive the exciting invite to the wedding, the first question we women ask ourselves is, WHAT AM I GOING TO WEAR?

Men get it easy, we all know that 99.9% of the time, they will wear what we tell them too and usually, the hardest decision for them is jacket or no jacket, right?

For us, it will depend on the weather, the location, how well do we know the bride and groom, our hormones, our bank account, “that time of the month” and what on earth does formal, semi formal or casual mean?

There are certain do’s and don’ts when it comes to wedding attire. Don’t wear white, off white, beige, ivory, even a light blue, they all photograph like classic white and well, you don’t want to be “that person”. Definitely don’t wear black, leave that to Aunt Gertrude who clearly hates the world, try to steer clear of the bridal party colours, don’t wear the outfit you wore to a Coachella themed party, don’t wear stilettos to a garden wedding, leave the spikes to the runners and definitely, do not wear jeans!

Generally you can tell the dress code of the wedding by the location, a formal wedding is usually at a luxury location or venue, in this case,

women should opt for a floor length dress, you may get away with a dressy cocktail dress but the mini’s should be left in the cupboard for this affair – pair your outfit with stunning heels, high end jewellery and a matching clutch bag, or a dressy pant suit can also be an option if a dress is not your thing.

Semi formal is the most confusing, I mean what is dressy casual, thongs and a ball gown? No. This dress code depends on the time of day, if it is a day ceremony, you can opt for floral or brighter patterns, the dresses can be maxi, midaxi, midi or even a nice subtle mini that holds a little modesty. Heels are still a go to here, however nice wedges or a fancy flat are also acceptable, and again, pant suits are an alternative - a safe bet for that one friend who devours the open bar and gets way too excited during the Nutbush.

Casual, hmmm, this one is a little tougher - t’s still a wedding right? Please hear me when I say, unless the couple state it openly, jeans, shorts, singlets, boob tube tanks, a Sabbi tee, sneakers or thongs are never, ever appropriate.

leave that to Aunt Gertrude who clearly hates the world, try to steer clear of the bridal party colours, don’t wear the outfit you wore to a Coachella themed party...

Here you can wear your favourite summer dress, a floral mini, even a gorgeous co-ord set that are all the rage, pair it with a cute wedge or dressy sandal however if you are torn, always err on the side of over dressed rather then under dressed.

To be honest, (plug plug plug), all you really need to do is pop into The Curve Collective, let us know the dress code and we can do the rest for you. We have a huge range of designer dresses from sizes 6 to 26, clutches and heels that we offer to you for hire and we also have a boutique shop front where you can buy an outfit (or 2). Hayley Young, The Curve Collective.

Steve Brbich is the founder of Silver Quinn Productions, who o er high end Videography and Photography services here in the Port Macquarie region and beyond.

Steve Brbich

Hi Steve. Can you share a bit about your background and what sparked your love of photography and videography?

Silver Quinn Productions (SQP) was created when we relocated from Sydney to the Mid North Coast of NSW. We aspired to deliver an experience and bespoke service that no other local business was delivering, at the time. After working on film sets in New Zealand with Tom Cruise and red-carpet events in Sydney, I was hooked on the creative aspect of photography and film making. Inherently, I have always been a creative, with a love of

can be infused on a wedding day and also the

drawing, dabbling in architecture and being intrigued by arts, movement and moments. The role that SQP plays in photography and videography locally, is to partner and collaborate with other great creative businesses and clients, to propel and platform their brands or vision, and to create the feeling and experience that they expect for their customers or their event. Being passionate about what we do and working with a team of professionals has meant that our skills continue to grow, as we are focused on learning and continual development, in an ever-changing technology driven landscape for still and motion pictures.

Our love of photography and videography is what has built the quality of our brand, which is an experience-based company, as opposed to just a service-based business.

How would you describe your artistic style, and how does it differ when capturing weddings compared to your more commercial work? My artistic style is always changing, it is based on experience and quality production. I am always trying to improve and bring a difference to my artistic style which suits the brand, or the couple being captured. We have learnt over the years that aspects from shooting different commercials and the techniques applied in commercial business,

other way around.

SQP has a philosophy of - "People remember how you made them feel, more than what you say and this is what video and photo does... it creates a memory, a feeling, an emotion, a moment in time to remember."

People remember how you made them feel, more than what you say, and this is what video and photo does...it creates a memory, a feeling, an emotion, a moment in time to remember.

Other notable influences on the SQP style are the vibe of the day, the people and what the aim of the production, project or event is focused upon. Pre wedding discussions with the couple during consultation on what they really want for the special day and the ideas that I can add to their already existing plan, help the final package come together. What is important for the couple and families that I am working with along with the music, international influences and traditions are also key to delivering an amazing outcome for photo and video. This applies in both the wedding event space and the commercial business industry.

Continued...

What role does technology play in your work, do you have a favourite piece of equipment or technique that elevates your storytelling?

I feel that having a finger on the styles and trends in the commercial and wedding sectors is the best way to ensure that we are ahead of the curve.

Technology is fundamental to creative success in our line of work! Building a library of photography and videography equipment over the years, has been part of the amazing journey and ensures that we are prepared for all conditions, all moments and shooting in the day or evening. For example, using a drone to set the scene for the day, to remind the couple of how beautiful their ceremony was, right through to ensuring that their heartfelt glance with their grandparents was captured, or that the detail of their cake and the guests was real and raw,

can only be achieved with the right equipment. Alongside our drones, we would have to say the gimbles, sliders, teleprompters for any pre-recording and lighting sets, mics and of course the amazing cameras that we are using....create the right outcome. Couple this with quality software and music for film, then the magic is created.

The other fundamental I have, is that we always use new batteries for equipment at each wedding or event...or ensure that things are fully 100% charged for cable-based tech.

How has your style or approach evolved over the years, and what continues to inspire you?

The SQP style is always evolving based on trends and technology....but also based on what our clients want to achieve. I feel that

having a finger on the styles and trends in the commercial and wedding sectors is the best way to ensure that we are ahead of the curve. This requires being abreast of what is happening in the international and local wedding sector. I am inspired by just being better than the day before, with what SQP is producing. Getting a sharper angle, ensuring transitions are crisp, being unique and most of all telling a story when it comes to motion and making that really bespoke cinematic experience for the couple and their family.

When it comes to wedding photography and videography, how do you collaborate with couples to understand their vision and ensure the final product reflects their personalities and love story?

The key differentiator with SQP, is how we understand and tailor the experience for the people we are working with. The quality of what we deliver is only ever elicited by ensuring that our couples feel comfortable, relaxed and connected with what we are capturing behind the lens. This comes

with trust and the willingness to be vulnerable and truly themselves.

ere are great moments to capture and for a lot of couples you see the real joy of knowing that they are actually married! e rest sprinkles on top.

I do a catch-up coffee, phone call or zoom meeting to have a chat about the feel and look of their photos or video. It is also a good opportunity to listen and to observe the couple's personalities.

What are your favourite moments during a wedding day to photograph or film, and why?

A big moment is the first kiss and walk back down the aisle together. There are great moments to capture and for a lot of couples you see the real joy of knowing that they are actually married! The rest sprinkles on top. Another moment I really love to capture, and which I encourage couples to do, is exchange cards the morning of the wedding day. Capturing this moment when they read words from their fiancé the day of their wedding day is so powerful.

What advice would you give to couples when choosing a wedding photographer/ videographer or planning for their wedding day?

Choose a photographer and videographer who is experienced and fits your style. I feel being passionate about wedding photography and videography is a must!

Silver Quinn Productions offer a Photography & Videography Package which is value based, as let's be honest, the biggest day of your life is expensive.

Wedding photography/videography is both an art and a business. How do you balance creativity with the practical aspects?

At SQP we like to have a clear understanding of the style and desires of a couple prior to their wedding day, this assists us with recommendations on how we best capture their day and experience with their family

and friends. Collaborating with my wife, Em, who has worked internationally in people and tech-based companies, has really ensured that we have a clear business plan, an astute commercial acumen, whilst ensuring that we deliver the experience and service that has become synonymous with Silver Quinn Productions. Investing back into the community and ensuring that we can continue to evolve as a market leader locally, are things that drive us to take SQP to another level in 2025.

WHY GRAZING IS THE WAY TO GO FOR YOUR WEDDING DAY

A grazing table can be as big or little as you would like for your wedding day.

Some people like it as a cocktail hour so your guests can have a drink on arrival and nibble while the bride and groom get their photos done. Or, you can have it as a starter before finger food gets walked around.

Or, what I like to call it - a show stopper of a grazing table for your guests to

enjoy for a few hours and Soul Sister Grazing has you covered. Grazing is a little bit of everything - it’s not a smorgasbord so you don’t need to pile your plate up high - you just have a little bit and come back

Grazing tables and platters are the 2025 way to go for wedding food. It’s fresh and suits all dietary needs and can be so filling. Grazing tables also suit most budgets.

WITT & PEARL

Emily is the owner and designer of Wi & Pearl, a local brand that produces the most elegant and timeless pearl jewellery. Emily creates pieces that are perfect for every occasion, whether it be a day in the o ce or your wedding day!

No two pearls are alike, which makes every piece feel special and personal. Pearls are incredibly versatile, transitioning seamlessly from everyday wear to life’s grandest occasions.

What inspired you to start Witt & Pearl, and how did your journey into the world of jewellery design begin?

The inspiration for Witt & Pearl came from a mix of personal passion and a desire for change. Just over three years ago, my husband and I relocated back to Australia after years in the UK, where I co-ran a family pearl jewellery business alongside my work as a TV producer. I’d fallen in love with pearls during that time - their beauty, timelessness, and versatility captivated me. Moving to Port Macquarie, I saw an opportunity to build something unique

and meaningful, combining my love for pearls and a more balanced lifestyle. Witt & Pearl was born as a boutique, familyrun business that celebrates elegant jewellery, heartfelt customer service, and sustainability. I’m so proud that this journey has also seen Witt & Pearl featured in British Vogue, which was such an incredible moment for us as a small business.

Why pearls? What is it about them that captured your imagination and inspired your designs?

Pearls are fascinating - they’re natural gems that carry an inherent sense of elegance and individuality. No two pearls are alike, which makes every piece feel special and personal. Pearls are incredibly versatile, transitioning seamlessly from everyday wear to life’s grandest occasions. They also embody timelessness; they’re classic yet contemporary, and they never go out of style. For me, they symbolise understated luxury, and I love bringing that to my designs.

How would you describe the aesthetic of Witt & Pearl jewellery?

Witt & Pearl jewellery blends minimalism with elegance. I focus on clean lines, delicate details, and modern twists on timeless styles. Our designs are versatilepieces that can be worn effortlessly every day but also make a statement for special occasions. I love creating jewellery that feels personal, whether through the use of natural shapes like baroque pearls or the thoughtful craftsmanship behind each piece.

Continued over...

Can you share the creative process behind crafting one of your pieces, from concept to completion?

The process always begins with inspiration - sometimes from nature, other times from customer feedback or classic design elements that I want to reimagine. Once I have a concept, I sketch the design, considering how it will look, feel, and wear in real life. Next, I source high-quality pearls and precious metals, ensuring they meet our certified quality standards. From there, our pieces are meticulously handcrafted, paying attention to every detail. The final step is quality control, ensuring that each item is perfect before it reaches our customers.

Sustainability is a key aspect of Witt &

Pearl. Why is this so important to you, and how do you incorporate it into your business practices?

Next, I source high-quality pearls and precious metals, ensuring they meet our certified quality standards.

From there, our pieces are meticulously handcra ed, paying a ention to every detail.

Sustainability is at the heart of Witt & Pearl because I believe in creating beauty without compromising the planet. Pearls are a natural, renewable resource, and we ensure all our pearls and precious metals are ethically sourced and certified.

We use eco-friendly packaging and shipping materials, and we offset our carbon footprint for every order. Additionally, we donate 3% of our annual profits to the Save Our Seas

Foundation, supporting ocean conservation and protecting the ecosystems that nurture pearls. For me, sustainability is about taking responsibility and making positive changes wherever possible.

Witt & Pearl has become a favourite for brides. What do you think draws customers to your designs?

I think brides are drawn to the timeless elegance and simplicity of our pieces. Pearls naturally symbolise love and purity, making them a beautiful choice for weddings. Our jewellery complements a wide range of bridal styles, from traditional gowns to modern silhouettes. We also pride ourselves

on offering competitive pricing while maintaining exceptional craftsmanship, ensuring each piece feels special for such an important occasion.

How does it feel to see brides wearing your designs on their big day, knowing they chose Witt & Pearl for such a momentous moment in their life?

I love seeing photos of brides glowing in their Wi & Pearl pieces - it’s so special. It’s not just about creating jewellery; it’s about creating memories.

It’s incredibly rewarding knowing that one of our pieces of jewellery has played a part in such an important day in someone’s life. I love seeing photos of brides glowing in their Witt & Pearl pieces - its so special. It’s not just about creating jewellery; it’s about creating memories.

What’s next for Witt & Pearl? Are there any exciting projects, collections, or collaborations on the horizon?

This year is an exciting one for Witt & Pearl! We’re growing the team - which is especially meaningful as it’s still a family-run business and expanding into new international

markets to make our pieces accessible to customers around the world.

We’re also exploring partnerships with other like-minded brands to highlight local talent and sustainable practices. On top of that, I’m working on a children’s collection to be out early this year. Finally, we’re enhancing the overall customer experience with new ideas to bring our community closer to the brand. 2025’s going to be a busy one! Where can we find out more or get in

touch?

You can explore our collection and learn more about Witt & Pearl at our website: www.wittandpearl.com. We’re also on Instagram and Facebook @wittandpearl, where we share updates, styling inspiration, and customers wearing our pieces. Locally, you can find some of our pieces at the lovely Triple Two boutique in Thrumster. For any questions, feel free to reach out via email at hello@wittandpearl.com - I’d love to hear from you!

Kim Gatenby

HACUPUNCTURE CHINESE MEDICINE IVF SUPPORT

Integrative healthcare to support your wellbeing goals. Wauchope and Port Macquarie region acupuncture, Chinese medicine, and IVF support.

ello Kim, you have 19 years experience as a fully qualified acupuncturist, plus a Masters Degree in Reproductive Medicine and have recently moved to Wauchope. Please introduce yourself to our readers and tell us what you are looking forward to about working and living in this beautiful region?

I’m Kim, owner of Kim Gatenby Acupuncture, and your newest local acupuncturist with a special interest in reproductive health, including women’s health conditions such as PCOS, endometriosis, thyroid disorders, recurrent miscarriage, and more!

I’m so excited to be here on the Mid North Coast (Birpai Country) to share my healthcare knowledge for the betterment of our community. We can all agree it’s a beautiful place to live, and I wanted to contribute by bringing high level health care to a regional area. I also wanted to raise my son in a place that values nature, and I believe this region truly has it all.

What sparked your interest in this field and where have you been working prior to moving to Wauchope?

Until last year I had spent my whole life in Sydney, with two successful clinics in St Leonards and Dural called Sydney Natural Fertility. The first clinic I ever worked at had a reputation for pregnancy care, and where there are pregnant women there are also women wanting to be pregnant, which was the birth of my journey into reproductive support. Once I had studied everything available in Chinese medicine reproduction, I undertook a Masters in Reproductive Medicine at the University of New South Wales so that my knowledge could be fully integrative. It absolutely lights me up to be able to figure out complex infertility causes and help my patients have the babies they desire.

Tell us a bit about your involvement with IVF clinic Demeter Fertility and how you can help our local community?

Chinese medicine views the body holistically and aims to bring it back into balance, while reproductive medicine harnesses modern research to bring cu ing edge care to everyone.

I decided to partner with the team at Demeter Fertility because I value people having access to the best possible holistic reproductive support. Integrative medicine is so successful in other countries such as China, where I worked in a hospital that had both traditional and modern medicine, and I’d like to see more of it here. This partnership is the first step in that direction, and I’m so excited by how much it offers people reproductively. Patients can have continuity of care by seeing myself as the initial contact, then maintaining that care throughout the IVF process, where we can continue acupuncture and other allied support while keeping in close contact with the IVF clinic. We work together

for the best patient outcomes. What inspired you to combine acupuncture with reproductive medicine in your practice?

My patients were my inspiration! Health care is serious business, and it’s important to me to offer the best care possible, so I wanted to ensure my patients could ask me anything and know they were getting a well researched, accurate answer. Chinese medicine views the body holistically and aims to bring it back into balance, while reproductive medicine harnesses modern research to bring cutting edge care to everyone.

What other services will you be offering at your clinic?

Even though my special interest is in reproductive health and women’s health conditions, I am still a Chinese medicine practitioner and can support people with all their health concerns. I’m able to refer for private pathology blood tests for food intolerances, hormone panels, and general wellbeing categories like thyroid function, iron and lipids. Treatments can include acupuncture, herbal medicine, cupping, nutritional supplements, and diet and lifestyle advice for whatever health concerns you may have.

How do you stay updated with new research and advancements in both acupuncture and reproductive medicine?

AHPRA registered health practitioners are required to continue education every year in their field, so I regularly attend conferences from both modalities, and have been a speaker numerous times in the fertility field. Reading scientific research papers is more interesting than it sounds, and it keeps me up to date with advances in health care.

What’s the most rewarding part of working with patients on fertility and reproductive health?

Being part of the journey from preconception care, through pregnancy, and then meeting my patient’s adorable babies is the best feeling. Fertility struggles are often kept private, so I love to be a safe space for my patients to open up about how they’re feeling, and to then help them reach their goals.

You have been in the industry for over 19 years, can you tell us a bit about your study and the qualifications you hold?

My first degree was a Bachelor of Applied Science in Traditional Chinese Medicine. This gave me the qualification of acupuncturist and doctor of Chinese medicine. The 4 year degree involved 900 hours clinical training, with 400 of those hours being a clinical placement in a hospital in Nanjing, China, where I worked in the departments of oncology, rheumatology,

and general acupuncture. I later completed further studies in a Master of Reproductive Medicine, with top honours, as my interest in women’s health expanded.

What can patients expect when coming into your practice?

A safe space to share all your concerns. I will always listen to how you feel and what you think is going on, and then guide you with ways to feel better and reach your health goals. I believe we can always improve our health, at any age. Reproductive health is just an extension of our general wellbeing, with some extra fine tuning for specific conditions.

Consults involve a large amount of time devoted to discussing your concerns, so you feel heard and also educated in what is going on, allowing you to be an active participant in your wellness journey.

How can our readers get in touch and book an appointment with you?

My clinic is based at The Wellness Collective, 39 Cameron Street, Wauchope.

My website is kimgatenby.com which has online bookings and a contact form, or you can give me a call on (02) 6583 5635. I’m looking forward to being part of your healthcare team.

Thanks Kim.

SHow to Take Care of Your Skin During Summer – Insights from Dr K

ummer is a wonderful time to enjoy the outdoors, but it can also be harsh on your skin. Heat, humidity, UV radiation, and pollution can lead to a range of skin issues. To help you navigate summer skin care, we spoke with Dr. Kristy Kostalas, a cosmetic doctor and general practitioner with a special interest in skin health. Here's her expert advice on keeping your skin healthy and radiant during the warmer months.

Why does our skin need extra care during summer? Summer brings longer exposure to UV rays, increased humidity, and higher temperatures, which can dehydrate your skin, clog pores, and lead to sunburn or pigmentation. The combination of sweat and environmental pollutants can also trigger acne and irritation. Tailoring your skincare routine for summer helps combat these challenges and maintain skin health.

What is the most important step in a summer skincare routine? Sunscreen is absolutely non-negotiable. UV radiation is the leading cause of premature aging, sunspots, and even skin cancers. Use a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 50 or higher, and reapply every two hours if you’re outdoors. How can we protect our skin from sun damage besides sunscreen? Physical barriers are equally important. Wear wide-brimmed hats, sunglasses with UV protection, and lightweight, long-sleeved clothing. Try to avoid the sun during peak hours, typically between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. Shade-seeking is an excellent habit, especially for those with sensitive or fair skin.

Putting a B3 cream under your SPF also reduces your skin damage.

What type of moisturiser is best for summer? Opt for a lightweight, noncomedogenic moisturiser that hydrates without clogging pores. Gel-based moisturisers are ideal for oily skin, while hyaluronic acid-based products can provide hydration without feeling heavy. If you have dry skin, you might need a light lotion with ceramides to maintain your skin barrier. We can recommend the right moisturiser for you in a skin consultation if you’d like more information.

What should we include in our summer skincare to combat hyperpigmentation? UV exposure can worsen pigmentation issues like melasma or sunspots. In addition to sunscreen, consider using antioxidants like vitamin C in your morning routine. Vitamin C helps protect against oxidative stress and fades dark spots over time. Evening treatments with retinol or azelaic acid can also target pigmentation, but be sure to introduce these gradually to avoid irritation. B3 and SPF are equally important.

Is it safe to exfoliate more often during summer? Exfoliation can help remove dead skin cells and prevent clogged pores, but overdoing it can disrupt your skin barrier. Aim to exfoliate 1-2 times a week, using a gentle chemical exfoliant like lactic acid or mandelic acid. Avoid harsh scrubs, which can irritate sensitive summer skin.

What are common summer skin problems, and how can we address them? Common issues include:

Sunburn: Treat mild sunburn with aloe vera gel or a cold compress. For severe burns, seek medical attention.

Acne: Switch to a simple cleaser, B3 and sunscreen skincare routine. A chemical peel, healing LED or microneedling will help to reduce an acne flare. Avoid makeup.

Heat Rash: Wear loose, breathable clothing and use soothing products like calamine lotion if needed.

How can we protect our skin during outdoor activities like swimming or hiking? Chlorine and salt water can dry out your skin, so rinse off immediately after swimming and apply a hydrating lotion. For hiking or other outdoor activities, pack sunscreen, a hydrating mist, and lip balm with SPF. Don’t forget to protect areas like your ears, neck, and feet.

What professional treatments do you recommend for summer skin care?

Treatments like IPL and microneedling can be done in summer, but it’s critical to protect your skin afterward with strict sun protection. For hydration and radiance, a Glow Facial or a light chemical peel works wonders. Always consult a professional to tailor treatments to your skin type.

Thanks Dr Kostalas.

Women’s Health

FROM WOMEN’S HEALTH PHYSIO/ PHYSIO COLLECTIVE with GRAYCE GERKE

The advice to “drink more water” is often repeated, but how much is truly necessary? While hydration is essential for health, excessive water intake can have unintended consequences, particularly for your bladder and kidneys. As a Women’s Health Physiotherapist I am seeing the ‘large drink bottle’ trend and individuals drinking far more than needed due to social media trends. So here’s a breakdown of what you need to know about staying properly hydrated without overdoing it.

How Much Water Do We Actually Need?

The amount of water a person needs varies depending on factors such as age, weight, activity level, and environment. The general recommendation is about 2-2.5L per day for most adults, which includes all fluids such as water, tea, coffee, and other beverages, as well as fluids from food.

It’s important to note that we should stop separating water from other fluids; all fluids contribute to your daily intake. Additionally, thirst is your body’s natural signal for hydration. Listening to your body can often be more reliable than following the “8 glasses a day” rule.

The Risks of Excessive Water Intake

Drinking more than 3L of water daily without

HYDRATION 101:

HOW MUCH DO WE ACTUALLY NEED?

medical necessity can place undue stress on your body, particularly the kidneys and bladder:

Bladder Overload: Consuming excessive amounts of water can lead to increased urinary frequency and urgency. For individuals with bladder sensitivities or conditions such as overactive bladder, this can exacerbate symptoms, leading to discomfort and disrupted daily life.

Frequent Toilet Trips: Drinking more water than your body needs in a short amount of time, can lead to more frequent toilet trips; which can be inconvenient and disruptive. The average is between 6-7 times per day.

Electrolyte Imbalance: Overhydration disrupts the delicate balance of electrolytes in your body. When your electrolyte levels become low due to excessive fluid intake your body’s balance goes down, which can lead to symptoms such as; muscle spasms, cramping, tiredness, or fatigue.

Signs You May Need More Water:

On the other hand, dehydration is also a concern, especially for those who are physically active, unwell, or living in hot climates. Signs you need to drink more include:

Dark Yellow Urine: Ideally, your urine should be a pale yellow color. Darker shades indicate concentrated urine and potential dehydration.

Dry Mouth and Skin: Persistent dryness can be an early sign of dehydration.

Fatigue and Dizziness: These can occur when your body struggles to maintain blood volume due to low fluid levels.

Reduced Urination: Fewer than four urinations per day may indicate you’re not

drinking enough.

Stay Hydrated Without Overdoing It

Drink to Thirst: Pay attention to your body’s cues. Thirst is the best indicator of your hydration needs.

Consider Activity Levels: Increase your intake slightly during exercise or in hotter conditions.

Eat Hydrating Foods: Fruits and vegetables such as watermelon, cucumbers, and oranges are excellent sources of water and electrolytes. Monitor Your Urine: Pale yellow (straw coloured) urine is a good sign that you’re adequately hydrated.

Avoid Excessive Water Loading: Spread your fluid intake throughout the day to avoid overwhelming your bladder and kidneys. Don’t guzzle water all at once to make up for reduced intake.

Get a Bottle with a Straw: have a drink bottle handy with a straw, you tend to guzzle more with a lid due to not wanting to constantly open and close the lid. Make it easier to take regular sips with a straw.

While staying hydrated is vital, more isn’t always better. By drinking to thirst, monitoring your body’s signals, and considering your lifestyle, you can maintain optimal hydration without overdoing it.

TOOTH

Decay

TA COMMON, CHRONIC, PROGRESSIVE AND TREATABLE CONDITION

Tooth decay is chronic, one of the most common oral health problems, and progressive, meaning it gets worse if you leave it. Many people underestimate its impact. Tooth decay le untreated, can lead to serious complications, including pain, infection, and even tooth loss.

THE STAGES OF TOOTH DECAY

he good news is that tooth decay is treatable, meaning if you catch it early it is easy to treat it. Understanding the causes, stages, and preventive measures can help you maintain a healthy smile for you and your family.

What is Tooth Decay? Tooth decay, also known as dental caries or cavities, occurs when the enamel (the outer protective layer of the tooth) is damaged by acid. This acid is produced by bacteria in the mouth that feed on sugars from food and drinks. Over time, the acid erodes the enamel, creating small holes in the tooth surface. This is the early superficial stage of tooth decay. If left untreated, decay progresses deeper into the tooth, reaching the dentin (the softer layer beneath the enamel) and eventually the pulp, which contains nerves and blood vessels. This progression can result in severe pain, sensitivity, infection and even tooth loss. Tooth decay doesn’t happen overnight. It progresses through several stages:

1. Initial Demineralisation. The earliest stage begins with the loss of minerals from the enamel. White spots may appear on the

tooth surface, signalling the beginning of decay.

2. Enamel Decay. If demineralisation continues, the enamel starts to break down, forming a cavity. At this stage, the damage is still confined to the outer layer of the tooth.

3. Dentin Decay; Once the decay reaches the dentin, the cavity grows larger. The tooth may become sensitive to hot, cold, or sweet foods and drinks.

4. Pulp Involvement. When the decay reaches the pulp, it can cause pain and inflammation. Without treatment, an infection or abscess may develop and the tooth may require a root canal.

5. Advanced Decay. In the final stage, the tooth may become severely damaged, and extraction may be necessary.

How to Prevent Tooth Decay!

The key to preventing tooth decay is maintaining good oral hygiene and making smart lifestyle choices.

Brush and Floss Daily. Brush your teeth twice a day with fluoride toothpaste and floss daily to remove food particles and plaque. Limit sugary foods and drinks.

Regular Dental Check-Ups. Visit your dentist every six months for cleaning and checkups. Early detection of tooth decay can save your teeth from more invasive treatments. Remember prevention is the best treatment. Treatment Options for Tooth Decay. If tooth decay is detected early, it can often be treated with minimal intervention. Fluoride treatments can help remineralise weakened enamel, and small cavities can be repaired with small fillings. For more advanced decay, options include large fillings, crowns, veneers, bridges and root canal therapy. Extractions may be necessary in severe cases where the tooth cannot be saved. Make sure to explore your follow up options after an extraction such as bone graft, implant, bridge or denture as no tooth loss is a good outcome. The takeaway message is tooth decay is common, chronic, and progressive but the good news is, it’s treatable. Stay on top of your family’s dental health with brushing flossing and regular check-ups. Call the caring team at Sundial Dental to book your family’s check-ups with us today! Together, we can fight tooth decay and keep your smile bright. 6583-3533 or 6585-2015.

Could Your Knee Pain Be Osteoarthritis?

Knee osteoarthritis, often referred to as “wear and tear arthritis of the knee,” is the most prevalent form of knee arthritis affecting millions worldwide.

In a healthy knee, smooth articular cartilage provides cushioning and protection to the ends of the bones inside the knee. This allows for effortless movement of the knee.

However, as we age or put our knees through repetitive stress, this protective cartilage gradually wears away. The erosion exposes the bones of the knee to friction, pressure and inflammation, leading to knee osteoarthritis.

Symptoms of Knee Osteoarthritis

The onset of knee osteoarthritis pain is typically gradual, though it can also manifest suddenly. Common symptoms include:

• Stiffness and swelling around the knee joint, making movement hard;

• Mor ning stiffness and increased discomfort after periods of rest;

• Aggravation of pain during or after activity;

• Sensations like locking, creaking, or grinding in the knee joint (crepitus);

• Feeling of weakness or instability in the knee;

• Increased pain sensitivity with changes in weather conditions.

Risk Factors for Knee Osteoarthritis

Several factors can increase the likelihood of

developing knee osteoarthritis, including:

• Old age;

• Excess body weight;

• Repetitive stress or overuse of the knee joint; and

• Previous knee injuries or trauma

• Treatment Approaches for Knee Osteoarthritis

Neil Yates has been volunteering in the Port Macquarie branch of Sailability since it began in 2012 and is currently its President. He is passionate about this not-for-profit community service and we wanted to hear what it’s all about, how it operates and the many benefits it brings to our community.

Hi Neil. When did you start volunteering with Sailability and what inspired you to get involved?

When it was decided to possibly form a Sailability Branch the Rotary members reached out to some people. Fifteen of us then met and sat around the kitchen table in Richard Symonds house and were thoroughly briefed on what Sailability did and the obvious need for a branch in Port Macquarie. We all came from various backgrounds but the common points we all had was a desire to help people who needed it and a love of the water. As a result, we agreed to form the Port Macquarie branch that day and we became the original 15 members. Nine of us are still with the branch.

Can you share a bit about Sailability, how it got started here in Port Macquarie and what it’s all about?

The inspiration for starting Sailability came from a couple of members of the Rotary Club of Port Macquarie West who heard about Sailability

NSW and decided to open a local branch. Sailability branches in other areas supported us and we got into the water at the end of 2012. We are now in our 13th year of operation. Our branch has been going from strength to strength ever since.

Sailability NSW is celebrating its 30th year, we will be holding a function soon to celebrate the significance of this. Sailability was originally titled as Sailing for the Disabled, however it has for quite some time been retitled to sailing for people with special needs. We take people with varying abilities sailing on the beautiful Hastings River every Wednesday during the season. All ages, all sorts of challenges the people face, from schoolchildren with special needs to older folk who love their time out on the water, to people who use a wheelchair for mobility.

What are some of the most challenging aspects of keeping Sailability up and running?

Sailability was originally titled as Sailing for the Disabled, however it has for quite some time been retitled to Sailing for People with Special Needs.

Raising funds to cover our operating costs each year and ensuring we attract a regular stream of volunteers coming into the organisation, bringing their skills and enthusiasm so we have a secure succession plan to keep delivering this service. Our operating costs are significant each year and so far, we are extremely proud of the fact that we do not charge anything for our activities. However, it is becoming very difficult to maintain with rising costs and we urgently need some sponsors to assist us with running costs. What do you enjoy most about being involved?

I have moved from a variety of roles, initially we had a portable pontoon which I used to help

e thing that keeps me personally going is seeing the variety of expressions on our sailors’ faces, they vary from smiling, laughing, falling asleep on the skipper’s shoulder to trying to paddle.

assemble then push the wheelchairs onto it and help load the clients (which we term sailors) into our boats. Now I drive and oversee our recovery boat operation which depending on the wind and tides can be very busy. But, the thing that keeps me personally going is seeing the variety of expressions on our sailors' faces, they vary from smiling, laughing, falling asleep on the skipper’s shoulder to trying to paddle. To know I am helping people achieve happiness and satisfaction is my inspiration. Could you tell us a bit about the people that come out on the water with you?

All ages, all sorts of disabilities – groups from aged care facilities, schools and people who live independently but need some support to participate in routine community activities. What have been some of the reactions like when you take sailors out for the first time?

Reactions vary, for some it’s the first time in a small boat and depending on their particular

disability you can see a level of concern. However, once they are out on the water this turns to expressions of happiness. Some of our regular sailors request the same skipper each time as they feel totally safe with them. We comply with requests such as this where possible. We also are teaching some who have the desire to learn the rudiments of sailing which again increases their sense of achievement.

Do you have many regulars, and what do you think keeps people coming back?

All of our sailors are regulars because they love sailing with us. We have about 120 people sailing with us and we can only take around 60 to 70 or so each week so some come fortnightly. We are very much in demand. Obviously, they come back because of the enjoyment that the experience gives them whether it be a sense of achievement or happiness to be on the water.

You need volunteers and sponsors to keep Sailability going, what would you say to

anyone thinking of getting involved, and what sort of experience do they need to have to volunteer?

We always need to keep refreshing our volunteer corps so that we can ensure our organisation continues to thrive and we can continue to deliver the service to the community. Life intervenes in many ways and some of our volunteers move on for a variety of reasons.

It would be wonderful if we had enough experienced volunteers that we could run another day of sailing and meet some of the additional demand.

Volunteers do not need to be experienced, nor even interested in sailing! We have a large variety of roles and we will train people in a range of tasks both on and off the water.

We encourage people to come down to our sailing days at McInherney Park on a Wednesday from 07.30 to approximately 2pm depending on the number of sailors and the weather and see first hand how we operate. Where can we find out more or get in touch?

Come on down, or phone our secretary on 0411 152 598 or email sailabilitypm@gmail.com

Cathy Snook

Cathy Snook is a Sales Agent at Hometown Australia Glenfern, where she finds great joy in assisting people in making their ideal retirement lifestyle a reality.

i Cathy. What drew you to this particular sales position and community?

Having spent a number of years in the retirement living sector, I was drawn to the financial benefits that a lifestyle community offered compared to traditional retirement living options. I had heard of Hometown as a major provider of over-50s living and was encouraged by the company’s growth and the number of villages Hometown has acquired across the country. After viewing the community of Glenfern I was so impressed by the facilities and the grounds and the beautiful location and how it presented, I thought yes, I want to sell this beautiful community! I was also pleasantly comforted by the happy and down-to-earth nature of the staff. I truly enjoy working with the team here at Glenfern, where everyone is so friendly and supportive.

How long have you been working in sales, particularly in 50+ communities?

I have over ten years of experience selling preloved homes and new homes within over50s living and helping set up new villages, offering a range of financial packages. I really enjoy being part of the customer journey, advising retirees or downsizers on the benefits of living in a community. I love working with people and feel privileged to be part of their life’s journey.

What makes Hometown Australia Glenfern unique compared to other 50+ lifestyle villages?

Glenfern is a brand-new, modern community offering stunning homes with both singlestorey and double-storey options. These homes feature high ceilings, open-plan living, light-filled interiors, and stylish modern finishes. The community is set in beautiful bushland, providing a peaceful environment while still being just ten minutes from town and only two minutes from major shops and the hospital. With only 151 homes planned, the village offers a more intimate and close-knit feel, unlike larger communities that can sometimes feel impersonal. Modern facilities include a lap pool, gym, cinema, and a stunning community centre, all within a security-gated environment. What do you think residents appreciate most about living at Glenfern?

The facilities at Glenfern are exceptional, from taking a dip in the beautiful lap pool to enjoying the serenity of the location and the stunning community centre. It’s a place where great friendships are made. Glenfern is truly a friendly, inclusive, and supportive community. What do you find most rewarding about helping people transition to a 50+ lifestyle village?

The next stage of life often involves downsizing from a home that no longer suits your needs, freeing up time to enjoy the beautiful things in life, both in the village and beyond. It’s about having the peace of mind to travel, knowing your home is secure, without the hassle of mowing lawns or keeping up with constant updates since the homes are brand new. Enjoying the facilities, like swimming in the pool, becomes part of a lifestyle focused on relaxation and enjoyment. Life is all about change and adapting to what serves you, allowing you to focus on the finer things. Just like we change clothes that no longer fit or replace cars that no longer serve us, we should think the same way about our homes. There's no point in staying in a house that requires

constant maintenance or is far too big for our needs. Life is for enjoyment, and freeing up your time and means you can do what truly brings you joy.

Can you walk us through the process of helping someone find their perfect home at Glenfern?

Give me a call to arrange a viewing, or you can visit our website to book an appointment directly or send us an email. Pick up the phone, make the call, and come see our stunning homes for yourself - bring along any questions you may have, and we'll be happy to answer them. You have nothing to lose by coming out to have a look; we’re confident you’ll be impressed. We’ll show you around and address all your questions. Contact me or the sales team to schedule a viewing today!

Common concerns people have often revolve around fitting into the community and whether they’d get along with others. But remember, this is your home, and you can choose to interact as much or as little as you like. The option is there if and when you want to socialise, but it's entirely up to you.

Some people also worry they might be "too young" for an over-50s community, with the average age being 60 – 70 and we have several active residents who continue to enjoy their careers. This is a place to call home within a beautiful environment that you can enjoy at your own pace. You can also bring your small furry companions with you, and family members, including grandchildren, are always welcome to visit.

Life is short, so why not spend it doing what you love, traveling to places you’ve always wanted to see, and knowing your home is safe and secure.

What advice would you give to someone considering a move to a lifestyle village like Glenfern?

Just do it! In my experience, everyone who moves to a community lifestyle wishes they had done it sooner. The opportunity to enjoy amazing facilities while freeing up your time is priceless. Life is short, so why not spend it doing what you love, traveling to places you’ve always wanted to see, and knowing your home is safe and secure? Live in a resortstyle environment where every day feels like a getaway. We live in Port Macquarie because it’s such a beautiful place, and when the visitors leave, we get to stay and enjoy it year-round. The same goes for living at Glenfern - you get to experience that resort-style living every day, without having to leave.

Are there common concerns or questions people have, and how do you address them?

In terms of finances, purchasing into an over50s or 55s community is just like purchasing a residential property, except you don’t have to pay stamp duty. There are no entry fees, and when you sell, the profit is yours to keep. Buying in a new community like Glenfern is still a great investment; as demand for homes rises when the community fills up, so does the price point. Now is an excellent time to buy with properties starting at $595,000 and our two-storey homes, which offer stunning bush views, priced around $680,000. We remain a very competitively priced community.

How can people learn more about Glenfern or reach out to you for information?

Improving Retention Rates in Australian Schools: Ensuring Success for All Students

Retention rates in schools serve as a crucial measure of the education system’s ability to engage and support students through to the completion of their secondary education.

Retention Trends Across Australia

Nationally, retention rates from Year 7/8 to Year 12 reflect both progress and persistent gaps. In 2024, the overall retention rate for Australian students completing Year 12 was approximately 81%. While this marks an improvement over previous decades, the data shows disparities linked to socio-economic status, geographic location, and school resources.

In NSW, retention rates for all students are slightly above the national average, with 85% of students completing Year 12. However, students in remote remote areas continue to face significant challenges compared to major cities.

Barriers to Student Retention

Factors contributing to students leaving school before completing Year 12:

• Socio-economic Challenges: Families facing financial difficulties may struggle to support their children’s education, particularly in the later years, where costs often increase.

• Geographic Disparities: Students in remote and regional areas often encounter limited access to resources, transportation, and school facilities, making it harder to remain engaged in their education.

• Academic and Emotional Pressures: As students

progress through secondary school, increased academic demands and personal challenges can lead to disengagement.

Strategies to Improve Retention

To ensure that all students are supported, schools and policymakers must adopt targeted strategies, including:

• Enhanced Access to Resources:

Financial aid, transport assistance, and access to affordable learning materials can alleviate barriers for families facing economic hardship.

• Flexible Learning Pathways:

Schools can offer alternative routes to graduation, such as vocational education and training (VET) programs, to cater to students with diverse interests and learning needs.

• Student Well-being Support:

Implementing mental health and counselling services within schools can address the emotional and social challenges that often contribute to students leaving school early.

• Parental and Community Engagement:

Strengthening the relationship between schools, families, and communities ensures students receive consistent encouragement and support.

Hastings Schools Commitment to Retention

Catholic schools have seen an increase in student retention increasing from 79.8% in 2010 to 81.1% in 2023 and in the Hastings region have taken a proactive approach to improving retention rates by implementing programs that support students in their educational journey.

EDUCATION UPDATE

REGIONAL SERVICE LEADER CATHOLIC SCHOOLS OFFICE, HASTINGS REGION with STEPHEN PARES

• Pastoral Care and Well-being:

Recognising the importance of emotional and social support, we implemented a comprehensive pastoral care framework. This ensures students have access to resources and assistance with academic and personal challenges.

• Tailored Learning Pathways:

Offering a variety of educational pathways, including VET and career-focused programs, to cater to students with different aspirations and learning styles.

• Engaging Learning Environments:

Fostering inclusive and supportive environments that prioritise student engagement and connection.

• Indigenous Education Workers (IEWs):

These workers play a vital role in monitoring attendance in schools with Indigenous enrolments, assisting with homework and improving educational outcomes.

• Inclusive Practices Policy:

This policy ensures that every student, regardless of background or ability, has equitable access to quality education.

While Australia has made strides in improving retention rates, there is still work to be done.

The efforts of our local Catholic Schools, demonstrates how strategies and communitydriven initiatives can help address barriers and improve retention rates. With continued focus Australia can move closer to ensuring success for every learner, regardless of their circumstances.

Leslie Williams

Leslie Williams has announced her intention to retire from the NSW Parliament after an incredible 14 years as Member for Port Macquarie. As she reflects on her time as MP she is also looking forward to spending more quality time with her children and grandchildren in Western Australia.

Hi Leslie. What led to your decision to retire now, and how are you feeling about stepping away from public office?

It is always a difficult decision to leave a role that you thoroughly enjoy each and every day, but at some point you need to determine the best time, both for yourself personally and for those that you serve.

As many in the community know my dear husband Don, and best friend for over 30 years passed away suddenly two years ago only a few months before the 2023 election. My family and I were overwhelmed by the outpouring of support as we grieved this tragic loss and will be forever grateful for the love and care shown to us during this difficult time.

There has been much time for reflection since then, and while I have thoroughly enjoyed my tenure as local member, I believe it is now the right time to hand the baton to a new leader who I am confident will pursue this opportunity with vigour and enthusiasm as I have.

What initially inspired you to enter politics, and what were your hopes when you first became the MP for Port Macquarie?

My family and I were overwhelmed by the outpouring of support as we grieved this tragic loss and will be forever grateful for the love and care shown to us during this difficult time.

It’s well known that my passion for a local public school at Lake Cathie was the driver for my start in politics. This was a community driven project with strong advocacy from all

facets of the local area including the Progress Association, local businesses and organisations but the loudest voices were from the parents themselves who knew very well that a local public school would change the landscape of our community. Of course, our dream finally became a reality when the Liberals & Nationals came into government in 2011 with the doors to this wonderful school welcoming its first students in 2015.

As you look back on your time in office, what are some of your proudest achievements for the Port Macquarie community?

Over the past 14 years there has been

unprecedented investment across every community throughout the electorate from Harrington and Coopernook in the south to Telegraph Point and the North Shore to Sancrox and King Creek in the west, Lord Howe Island and everywhere in between.

Together we can be proud of the major investment that will benefit generations to come like the Stingray Creek Bridge, the new PCYC, courthouse upgrades, progress on the Harrington-Coopernook overpass, the redevelopment of the Hastings Secondary College and the duplication of Ocean Drive currently under construction.

Importantly, working closely with my Liberal colleagues I was able to secure 197 hectares of significant koala and wildlife habitat which was earmarked for residential development bordering the Lake Innes Nature Reserve.

Thank you for putting your trust in me at four elections and for working in partnership to achieve significant wins for our communities.

to ensure that projects that had previously been committed to continue in earnest including the new Port Macquarie Police Station, major work on the southern breakwall, proposed new social housing and the record investment in upgrades to the hospital.

years and I’m now looking forward to supporting them both as their families grow. What has the relationship with the Port Macquarie community meant to you during your time in office?

The most rewarding outcomes though are those I’ve worked with in partnership with the community such as the recently opened Oxley Vale Lifelong Centre, major upgrades to sporting facilities such as the tennis centres at Kendall, Bonny Hills and Laurieton, investment in surf lifesaving clubs and fire stations as well as the popular Beach to Beach Pathway project and a long awaited preschool for Lord Howe Island. It’s been wonderful to support these volunteer led organisations that give so much back to the community.

What lessons have you learned during your time in office that you’ll carry with you into retirement?

Fourteen years as a local member has been so rewarding and it has reinforced for me how critical it is to build strong relationships in all facets of life and in this role it's so important that your advocacy on behalf of the community transcends differing political views.

I’m pleased that despite being in opposition for the past two years I have continued to successfully work closely with current ministers

What do you hope your legacy will be in Port Macquarie and beyond?

It's quite surreal that I have reached the milestone as the longest serving Member for Port Macquarie but I hope the community will remember me as not only a strong advocate on their behalf, but one that has always been prepared to listen, to work alongside them in partnership and despite our sometimes differing views on policies and priorities, a person who has always acted with honesty, integrity and sincerity.

What are your plans for retirement? Do you see yourself remaining involved in the Port Macquarie community in some capacity?

The new chapter in my life is going to be very different and the journey will start with relocating to Perth to be close to my three adorable grandsons Ollie, Eli and Hudson and a granddaughter arriving in June.

My two children Ben and Meredie have literally been my lifeline over the past two

There are 93 local MP’s in the NSW Parliament but without doubt I have the best job of them all serving such wonderful communities across the breadth of the electorate.

I have made so many treasured friends during my time as your local representative and will sorely miss the many special events, community and business gatherings and the connections with so many incredible volunteers who contribute so much to support others.

If you could send one message to the people of Port Macquarie as you prepare to retire, what would it be?

Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!

Thank you for putting your trust in me at four elections and for working in partnership to achieve significant wins for our communities. While I have been incredibly fortunate to serve in many roles in the Parliament including Committee Chair, Parliamentary Secretary, a Minister of the Crown, Deputy Speaker and now Shadow Minister, these have been far outweighed by the honour and privilege of being your local member.

Thanks Leslie.

THE GUTS, GRIT AND GROUNDWORK OF REMARKABLE REGIONAL ENTREPRENEURS, INNOVATORS, LEADERS AND GAME CHANGERS.

Madeleine Lawler has been at the helm of NFP Regional Development Australia Mid North Coast since 2023. In that short time Madeleine has made a significant impact to industry and community from Port Macquarie, Norfolk Island, to Bellingen and MidCoast, utilising her love for community development, research, data and detail mixed with her signature passionate yet down to earth, get it done approach.  She de ly manages the challenges and rewards of the CEO/parent hustle raising Solace, Romola and newborn Luca.

LAWLER Madeleine

Maddie - what was your first thought when you sat in the CEO’s chair on the very first day  - how did you hope to make a difference?

Starting at RDAMNC was daunting. We are an entity that is small, with a remit that is broad, in a large region, so the daunting feeling was largely around - "How am I going to pull this off?!” It was very quickly revealed that I don't have to pull anything off on my own, rather work with a region with passionate people pulling in the same direction.

You have had a longtime affinity and passion with the regions and base yourself in Woolgoolga, however you are rarely confined to an office, but rather out amongst the communities you work with to connect, support and advance. Can you share the role and mission of RDA Mid North Coast?

RDAMNC works with the region with the aim of keeping the region prosperous, beautiful, equitable and served. Our role is to connect people and opportunities together, take the lead on initiatives we are best placed to lead, and make sure we support regional stakeholders in their efforts to improve our communities and their lives.

What are the key services that RDA delivers and how do you and the team get out and about to connect and drive change in your diverse region?

We work from Coffs Harbour to MidCoast, aiming to activate the latest opportunities we come across and work on understanding our challenges better, to get a grip on what the real levers of change might be.

You are a details and data maven with a strong background in community development, research and analytics, can you share a little about your pathway to RDA and how that has helped you navigate opportunities for the MNC?

The formative role was a consultant for an organisational improvement consultancy. I got to do this internationally and all through Australia and it has left me with a lasting passion for public transport, depots and heavy industry. After my PhD in Melbourne I was at Coffs Harbour Headspace, then moved into local government. I went with my family to the Queensland outback doing community

and economic development, then returned to the Mid North Coast and joined RDA.

What are some of the projects or collaborations you are most excited about in 2025?

We have some incredible opportunities to collaborate regionally and lead in the circular economy.

We need to keep working on skills and labour, and grow people in skills that fit the economic activity occurring locally. We need to provide a safe and welcoming environment for people coming from other places to fill the gaps we urgently need filled.

On Norfolk Island we have some critical projects, like our artificial reproduction program which is rescuing the cattle and sheep industries. We are also helping to bring post-secondary education to Norfolk Island. Food security and drought resilience is also a focus.

What has been the most surprising element of your role?

One thing is the amount of potential that the Mid North Coast has which often doesn't seem to be visible in the narrative that is told about our region. There is so much more to it than tourism and retirement in the Mid North Coast.

What has been your greatest achievement in your journey so far? Conversely, what was your greatest challenge?

I had to work hard, swallow my pride, learn to accept fierce criticism, adapt to rules, always have a constructive contribution, use my intellect and represent us well.

As both a lateral and analytical mind, do you subscribe to a firm business plan or follow your gut instinct?

I always use a combination of both. Strategic and annual corporate planning are bread-andbutter activities. But I know an opportunity when I see one and we respond to emerging projects.

Getting through my PhD was a 5-year challenge! I have worked with great teams and organisations on a heap of things that I have been been proud of.

How important has it been to have the support of your team in building and delivering on the vision?

My team and I work collectively on all parts of the organisation’s delivery program. We stay organised and coordinated and contribute to the overall plan. I have a phenomenal team, capably led by Dianne Wall, our Chief Operations Officer.

How instrumental have sages and critics been in the  evolution of your leadership journey ? What is the most valuable lesson they taught you?

There are two really influential people outside of my family: Roelof and Richard. They couldn't be more opposite! Roelof was born in 1930s Holland, emigrated to Australia and in his Sydney Uni days ended up leading a social movement in Sydney called The Push. With the likes of Germaine Greer and Clive James being a part of it, Roelof and his friend Darcy were the “Princes of the Push.” Hanging out with Roe in the cafes of Glebe while I got a degree, between shifts in cafes was one of the coolest times of my life. A walking library, a deep humanitarian and an incredible intellect, he was one of the most influential people in my life.

Richard, the genius behind the Universal Improvement Company and all the great leaders I got to learn from as part of that role, was an incredible privilege. I had to work hard, swallow my pride, learn to accept fierce criticism, adapt to rules, always have a constructive contribution, use my intellect and represent us well. I got to train ride the Swiss way, flee erupting volcanoes, learn about the old school unbeatable techniques of statistical process control and the Shewhart Cycle. I still work with him.

What can we expect next from you and the team as you steer RDA into 2026?

We’ll be doing our strategic planning once the landscape settles post-election. We want a prosperous and thriving region into the future, but we can’t shy away from the challenges we have. It will be an interesting year.

Thanks Madeleine.

FROM PRIEST LEGAL

e Team at Priest Legal wish you all a very happy, safe and prosperous 2025!

With the summer holidays slowly drawing to a close, the year for many families and individuals only begins to hit full tilt in February as schools and universities go back and many retail businesses start to come up for air after a busy Christmas/ New Year period. At Priest Legal, we are keen to take on the new challenges that the year will bring with Alan’s retirement. It is an opportunity that I, and my fellow directors, embrace with enthusiasm knowing that we are supported by experienced and motivated staff.

Change can be disconcerting but it can also be invigorating –particularly if it is embraced positively. At Priest Legal, it is giving younger- but experienced lawyers - the opportunity to take on more responsibilities with enthusiasm and to review systems and processes in the workplace from the perspective of a long term undertaking. What’s it like working in legal practice?

Change can be disconcerting but it can also be invigorating –particularly if it is embraced positively.

Working in legal practice is a partnership between the client and the lawyer. We are a team. A client’s active participation in trying to find acceptable solutions to their legal problem is likely to help produce the best possible outcome for the client. To coin the old football adage “A kick is only as good as its chase!” In a legal setting, if the lawyer and the client work together towards the same goals and outcome, it is far more likely to produce the best possible outcome. We are only as good as our clients. Get the right lawyer to solve your legal issue!

You may know the story of the mechanical engineer of 40 years’ experience who is hired to fix a problem with the engine of a container ship. He proceeds to inspect the engine carefully and pulls out his hammer. He knocks something gently and the problem is solved.

The Engineer issues a bill for $20,000. The owner says “What! You did almost nothing! Give me a detailed bill.”

The bill says: “Tap with a hammer - $2. Knowing where to tap and how much to tap - $19,998.”

But what about the benefit to the owner?

Their problem was solved promptly having drawn on the right knowledge and experience versus the problem remaining unresolved causing ongoing and extensive delays and stress, ultimately costing the owner well in excess of the mechanical engineer’s bill. Valuing time and expertise is always difficult and subjective as the above illustration shows. For present purposes, engaging a lawyer with sound expertise in the area of law in which your legal issue falls, will likely see your legal issue resolved in a timely, pragmatic and ultimately cost-effective way.

People helping people!

To be a good lawyer (or a “good anything” for that matter) you must genuinely enjoy what you do, even in the face of some challenges along the way. Being able to work together with my clients as a team and making a positive difference in their lives through our work is my primary motivating factor.

The diverse team of lawyers, conveyancers and support staff at Priest Legal enables us to achieve strong outcomes for clients as we are able to draw on the depth of varying knowledge and skills within the firm. Find me or any of the Priest Legal team at www.priestlegal.com.au or call 65831777.

e Customer Journey: A Love Story for Valentine’s Day

Valentine’s Day is all about lovenot just flowers and chocolates. It’s the perfect time to reflect on another important relationship: the one between your business and its customers.

Surprisingly, the customer journey has a lot in common with dating and marriage. It starts with a spark, grows with trust, and thrives on longterm commitment. By treating the customer journey like a romance, businesses can better understand how to attract, convert, and keep loyal customers. Let’s explore this relationship and see how you can map your customer journey to create stronger connections.

Love at First Sight: Awareness

In romance, first impressions are everything. That first date, or even just eye contact, determines if someone wants to get to know you better. For businesses, the awareness stage is where potential customers meet you for the first time, whether through a Google search, social media, or a glowing recommendation.

TIP: Make sure your “meet-cute” moment is memorable. Invest in visually appealing branding, a user-friendly website, and messaging that clearly communicates your value. Use social media, SEO, and targeted ads to make it easy for customers to discover you. Wooing the Customer: Consideration

Once someone notices you, the real work

begins. In dating, this is the “getting to know you” phase, flirty texts, shared interests, and chats. For businesses, it’s when customers evaluate your offerings, compare you to others, and decide if they want to take things further.

TIP:Build trust by offering valuable content and personalised experiences. Share blogs, videos, or emails that answer their questions and show how you can solve their problems. Consider providing free trials, consultations, or samples, and always respond promptly to enquiries - nothing ruins interest faster than being ignored.

Popping the Question: Decision

The moment of truth in relationships is when someone decides to commit. For businesses, it’s when a customer makes a purchase. Like a proposal, this decision is based on trust, clarity, and perceived value.

TIP:Make it simple and stress-free for customers to say “yes.” Ensure your pricing is transparent, your checkout process seamless, and your policies (like returns or guarantees) easy to understand. Use reviews to reassure customers they’re making the right choice. Happily Ever After: Retention

Congratulations - you’ve sealed the deal! But just like marriage, the real work starts after the honeymoon phase. Retention is all about keeping the relationship strong and ensuring your customers stay loyal.

TIP:Show appreciation through loyalty programs, personalised offers, and thoughtful gestures like thank-you emails. Keep in touch with newsletters or updates that add value. If something goes wrong, address it quickly and sincerely; great customer service builds lasting loyalty.

Rekindling the Romance: Advocacy

When you’ve built a strong connection, customers naturally become your biggest fans. Happy customers will leave glowing reviews, share recommendations, and bring in new business.

TIP:Encourage advocacy with referral programs, user-generated content, and a public thank you. Make it easy for customers to share their experiences and reward their loyalty with perks they’ll appreciate.

The Bottom Line: Love Pays Off

By mapping your customer journey and treating it like a romance, you can create meaningful, lasting connections with your audience.

So, this February, put in the work to woo your customers. When you nurture the relationship, they’ll stick around - and that kind of loyalty is priceless.

As 2025 is now in full swing, some of us are well and truly knuckling down to kick those financial goals we have set for the year ahead. One topic that has been hot on my clients lips throughout January is home equity. But what exactly is home equity, and how can it be leveraged for various financial opportunities?

What is home equity? Home equity refers to the portion of your home that you truly own. It is calculated by taking the current value of your home and subtracting any outstanding loan amounts. For example, if your home is valued at $800,000 and you owe $600,000 on your mortgage, your home equity would be $200,000. Generally, the usable equity is up to 80% of your properties value without lenders mortgage insurance. This means that if your home is valued at $800,000, you could access up to $640,000 in usable equity.

How do you increase your equity? Home equity can increase over time due to two main factors: the appreciation of property values and the reduction of mortgage debt as you make repayments. In Australia, property values have generally seen a steady increase, making home equity an essential component of wealth accumulation for many homeowners. So how can you access your equity? Getting a top up with your existing bank.

Existing mortgage customers can approach their broker to increase their loan amount with the lender they currently bank with.

Refinancing your mortgage. Homeowners may choose to refinance their existing mortgage to access equity. This often involves taking out a new mortgage for a larger amount than your current one, using the difference to access funds.

Why would you access your equity? To invest in property. You may use your home equity as a deposit for an investment property. This allows you to build wealth through rental income and capital growth while also benefiting from tax advantages.

Renovations and Improvements. Using home equity for renovations can increase the value of your home, potentially leading to even more equity in the future. Improving your home can enhance your living experience and provide a return on investment when it comes time to sell.

Emergency Fund. Home equity can act as a financial safety net. In times of need, tapping into your equity can provide the necessary funds for unexpected expenses, medical bills, or job loss.

Debt consolidation. In the instance where we find ourselves making multiple payments on different credit facilities, we may decide to consolidate our debt into one easy repayment. This can ease cashflow and reduce interest

Equity: What It Is and What You Can Do with It

rates if done correctly.

Considerations and Risks While leveraging home equity can provide numerous benefits, it’s essential to proceed with caution. Increasing your debt can be risky, particularly if property values decline or if you are unable to make repayments. Before accessing your home equity, consider the following:

Loan Terms: When refinancing or topping up your loan, consider your current vs. new term. Extending the loan may reduce monthly repayments but could result in higher interest and a longer path to owning your home.

Market Conditions: Stay informed on local property trends. A declining market can decrease your home’s value and equity.

Financial Stability: Ensure you can manage additional debt comfortably.

Fees and Costs: Be aware of any fees, including valuation, legal, and lender costs. Home equity is a valuable asset for homeowners, providing opportunities for investment, financial security, and home improvements. However, it is crucial to approach the decision to leverage equity with careful consideration of the associated risks and benefits. With the right strategy, home equity can be an excellent tool for building wealth and achieving financial goals. Reach out at www.farnsworthfinancial.com.au to discuss how accessing equity could benefit you.

Decorating a new-build home or tackling a large renovation can be an exciting yet daunting task and sometimes it’s hard to know where to start.

With a blank canvas at your disposal, it’s essential to approach the process thoughtfully to create a cohesive and inviting space. Here are fa ew of my expert tips to help you get started:

1. Define Your Style and Goals

Establish a Vision: Begin by identifying the atmosphere and style you want for your home. It’s important to define what you like and what you don’t like, so a great tip is to create ‘mood boards’ using inspiration from Pinterest, magazines, or Instagram to hone in on your preferences.

Be sure to be realistic about what works for your lifestyle though - for example, minimalist designs may not suit families with young children.

2. Start with Key Rooms

Focus on high-use areas like the living room, kitchen, and dining rooms first. These spaces set the tone for the rest of the home and provide comfort during the ongoing decoration process. Think of way to create

focal points or standout features such as a statement sofa, dining table, or artwork to anchor each room.

3. Plan Your Layout and Lighting

Play around with furniture layouts and placement to maximise functionality and flow. Combine ambient lighting with task and accent lights in layers for versatility. Install dimmers or smart bulbs for added effect.

4. Add Texture and Personality

Use rugs, cushions, curtains, and throws to add warmth and depth and above all some lovely texture to your scheme. Consider materials like wool, velvets, silks or linen for variety and a sense of timeless style. Layer up your design with meaningful personal items such as family photos, books, or travel souvenirs to make the space uniquely yours.

5. Choose Colours Wisely

Take time to test colours in different lighting conditions before committing. Neutral tones are versatile, while bold colours can add drama when used sparingly. I often recommend using large A3 card and tester pots to try different paint hues in different locations to narrow down your choices. You’ll soon get a better idea of what looks

good and what’s not working well.

6. Invest in Quality Furniture

Start by purchasing essential pieces like a sofa or dining table first, then layer smaller accessories over time to avoid feeling overwhelmed. Although it’s often tempting to buy everything you like all at once , I like to recommend focussing on one or two rooms at a time. This helps avoid getting confused or buying things that don’t really fit the overall feel.

7. Add Greenery

Real or faux (I’m obliged to call them ‘everlasting’) plants can bring life to sterile spaces. Large statement arrangements or small potted plants work well depending on the room size.

8. Stay Flexible

Remember, the key to success is to work room by room and be a little patient. Decorating doesn’t have to happen all at once and it’s far better to add things you really love rather than buying pieces just to fill up a space. Take time to refine your choices as you live in the space and understand its needs better.

Happy decorating!
