are open 7 days a week with bakery and café/pizzeria and we’ve recently opened an underground bar, focusing on good music, good drink and good food. Soon, we’ll be opening a real authentic Italian restaurant, called “Osteria Italiana” next door.

Can you tell us about your partners in this new venue? What is your history together and what are you looking forward to about continuing to work with them?

My partners are Vito Di Grusa, whose collaboration began 10 years ago in the kitchen of Fiasco, and Roberto Volgo our bar manager whom I have been working with for over 5 years.

Hi Stef, you’ve been a part of the hospitality world here on the Coffs Coast for some time now, can you share a bit about your background for those who don’t know you yet?

I started my career in hospitality in Coffs Harbour in 2006 when I opened Fiasco restaurant and spent around 16 years as a chef. More recently I also had an ice cream place for a few years called Sotto Zero Gelato, maybe you remember, and then my latest project was taking on the popular Beachstone Cafe which we have just renamed Stef Beachstone.

Having now opened your new establishment, Stef&Co. what is this new venture all about?

Yes, recently we opened at the Promenade location, a popular spot with amazing views and a great location, called Stef&Co. We

Together we are sharing a beautiful and fun adventure of work and friendship. We are trying to create a place where all our collaborators and customers are welcome and have fun.

Can you tell us all about the different food on offer and what we can expect from a visit?

We open in the morning as a bakery and cafe and we have a great selection that are freshly baked every morning by ourselves. Our lunchtime menu has a little bit of a mix with sandwiches, salads, pizza and so on and then at night time the bakery turns into a pizza shop. We have a great selection of pizzas and we also have a great menu for sharing, like ravioli, ceviche, oysters and a few salads, both the bakery and the bar downstairs have the same menu. When we open next door, Coffs Harbour will have more of a classical Italian style restaurant menu.

Continued over...

The space is looking amazing. What has the design and fit out process been like?

For the design we did have a vision and knew exactly what we wanted it to look like. We relied on Natalie Linnea Aichroy from Linnea Design and Anna Scott from Surrounds Garden Design and the boys from Banksia who built it did this amazing job. It was a kind of work in progress and we had a feel we wanted to give. The team made a great effort and a great job to bring it all together.

Together we are sharing a beautiful and fun adventure of work and friendship. We are trying to create a place where all our collaborators and customers are welcome and have fun.

Mark from Banksia was very easy to work with and flexible as things kept progressing and changing and also working within our budget. This is our outcome and it was just a great collaboration.

What inspired you to take this location? What do you love about this spot?

I was looking for a space to do this project that I had in mind for a while. I knew quite a large team of very talented chefs and people and I thought, ‘we could grow and

do something else and something fun. This place was the Beachstone Cafe and so I called Tony, the owner of the building to have a look at the place. I love this place because of the river and the end bushfront is very unique. We're so close to the water and it's always been a popular spot. I just thought ‘why don't we bring it back to life?’. I pitched my idea to Tony and his brother, and they liked it and so took me onboard. They've been a great help and support getting this project completed. It's been a 50/50 collaboration and so far has been great and everything is working out. What I like most though, even though the location is great, has been the collaboration amongst all the parties, it seems like everything is just flowing the right way.

It seems that you have all bases covered with Stef & Co. Other than the great food, do you have any plans to offer entertainment or events?

Yes, I think we have all bases covered for the moment. You can come here from 6:30 in the morning have coffee and breakfast, or come here for lunch to just relax and have a glass of wine or something quick to go. In the afternoon you can have pizza with a little cocktail downstairs in the bar. We will be running a few events, either live music or a DJ and will try to include people of all ages. We don't want it be a place only for young people, we just really want to welcome everyone. We are planning on having a little bit each week but will depend on the night what's going on. When we open next door, the Osteria will also be offereing a base of fine classical Italian dishes and a relaxed environment. We want people to take a break, enjoy the space, the food and the friends which is what it’s all about when going out for dinner.

What sort of feedback have you had from the community so far?

So far we have had really good feedback. It's always very hard to please everyone but it seems the general feedback is everybody's happy with what we've done with the design and menu. We are very happy with the look and we are constantly working to improve everything. What do you hope your patrons take away from their experience at Stef & Co?

We

want people to take a break, enjoy the space, the food and the friends which is what it’s all about when going out for dinner.

I hope when people go home after visiting they walk away with a feeling of satisfaction, their expectations were met, they have a full belly and they feel a little bit

more relaxed than when they walked in. I hope they feel like they were taken care of and that everything was lovely and they will want to come back.

Where can we keep up to date on what's on, find out more, or get in touch?

You'll be able to find out all information about us on our webpage which is being launched this week. We will have all our details, opening hours and what’s going on at Stef&Co and music events coming up listed there, but also on an everyday basis you can follow us on Instagram or Facebook where we will make daily posts. Thanks Stef.

ANGUS FIELD

Hi Angus, can you share a bit about your background and how you came together with Nooky and Dallas Woods to form 3%?

I grew up in Lowanna and spent all my schooling life playing cover gigs with Simon and Angus throughout high school until I left to study music at Lismore Southern Cross Uni. After uni I moved up to the Gold Coast and started the duo Aya J, which lasted about two years before breaking up. Whilst in Aya J, I participated in Mushroom’s First Nations Pathways Program where Nooky was my mentor. When Aya J split up I moved back home and started working as a roofer for two years while still keeping in contact with Nooky. We decided to write a song together and that song then turned into a recording session in Sydney where Nooky and Dallas were recording some songs they’d written. After recording my song with Nooks, Dallas asked if I'd sing the chorus of his songs and in that session 3% was born. I landed back in Coffs to a message from Nooky saying that he and Dallas wanted to make a group with me. I agreed and the rest is

history I guess!

Angus Field is a local Gumbaynggirr man who has been singing and writing music since he was a kid. He is now one third of the First Nations Hip Hop collective '3%', who have been producing some powerful music and took home a couple of Aria Awards recently!

How would you describe your music style and where do you draw a lot of your inspiration from?

The style of music that we play is technically classed as hip hop, although the album we wrote has bits of everything in it. We have hip hop, we have heavy stuff, we have ‘almost’ a ballad and we even have a pop song in there. But through all the different genres, we have hard hitting and meaningful lyrics that have been carefully crafted to fit the meaning throughout each song.

The name 3% carries a strong message, referring to the percentage of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in Australia. What does being part of this collective mean to you personally?

To me personally it makes me proud to be who I am, where I'm from, and to be in a collective like this which brings power, pride and passion to our people through our music. It makes me want to keep charging forward and writing the music that shines a light on the issues and themes of indigenous people in Australia. We don't do 3% for us, we do it for all our people.

‘OUR PEOPLE’ was such a powerful debut single. The Presets rarely allow their music to be sampled. How did the idea to rework ‘My People’ come about, and what was it like receiving their blessing?

The idea to remake the sample actually came from Nooky who'd always wanted to flip that song and make something original out of it. Right back in the early stages of the group at a writing session we had in a studio above the Lord Gladstone Hotel in Sydney, we sat down with the producer Tasker, (who's also a Toormina boy) and started working on the remake. After nearly 40 minutes of everyone writing their parts, Nooky and Dallas with their raps and me with the chorus and bridge, we came up with the new song by 3% ‘Our People’. As soon as we heard the track we all knew that this was how we were going to introduce ourselves to the world. But the song wasn't able to come to life without the blessing of The Presets by using their sample. We left it up to our management team to get the clearance, and without any hesitation The Presets approved and gave us their blessing. To get the blessing of one of Australia's most iconic acts really matched the feeling around

the band and we felt extremely blessed and thankful and to put the cherry on top we got to play it live with Julian from The Presets at the Arias in November.

You’ve mentioned that working with Nooky and Dallas has changed how you perceive music, culture, and the world. Can you tell us more about what you’ve learned from collaborating with them? Why do you think this trio works so well?

Growing up I revolved a lot of my songwriting around pop songs and love songs. There definitely isn't anything wrong with that, but after meeting the boys and working with them on this album they showed me a depth to songwriting that I'd never experienced before. The themes in their lyrics were pinpointed and hard driven into the ideas they were writing about. They showed me how to write about issues bigger than my feelings and issues that affect more than just me. As I grew up with only a sister I never experienced anything like brotherhood, until I met the boys. They opened my eyes on songwriting, my culture and the world within the music industry and outside.

creative process like?

With 3% the way we write music isn't like I grew up writing. As a teenager I used to sit in my room with a piece of paper and my guitar and write chords, a melody and lyrics which would then evolve into a song. With 3% we all sit together in a room with a producer who creates the track. At the same time we all write our individual parts to go with the theme of the song we are writing about. Once we all have our parts we step up to the mic and let rip. I find this way of writing really effective to knock over multiple songs in one session.

With 3% the way we write music isn't like I grew up writing. As a teenager I used to sit in my room with a piece of paper and my guitar and write chords, a melody and lyrics which would then evolve into a song.

Can you share a bit about the music you’ve been working on recently? What is your

Your music reflects on challenging topics, but it also celebrates resilience. What message do you hope listeners take away from it?

Our music has a wide variety of themes but personally I really hope that listeners can take home the idea of resilience and positivity; especially from the songs ‘Coming Home’ and ‘Higher’. With mental health the main theme in 'Coming Home', it hit home with me whilst writing this track. I hope people can resonate with this and use it as a message of positivity for anyone struggling with mental health. Higher is purely about appreciating the journey of achieving your goals and triumph when you

get there in the end.

What have been some stand out moments for you in your music career so far?

Definitely for me playing the ‘Dreamtime at the G’ would have to be one of the biggest. Playing in front of 85,000 people was a feeling I've never felt before. Doing our prison tour early on in the year was also a highlight. Playing for all the lads on the inside when they wouldn't usually get anything like that was a humbling experience. Playing the New Years Eve fireworks at the Opera House was also a massive one as it was broadcast to millions around the world. Probably one of the biggest highlights though, was receiving 4 Aria nominations, receiving 2 and playing alongside Jess Mauboy and Julian at the Arias. That would be one of the greatest highlights so far. What does the future hold for you as an artist, both within 3% and in your personal musical journey?

The future for 3%, well, we have to figure that out. We're all taking some time off after winning the Arias but then coming back into the new year to figure out our next move. We already have a number of festivals booked next year around the country but any massive announcements are yet to go public. As for myself, I’m always writing my own material for myself. I'm lucky enough to still be living on the beautiful North Coast and working in my studio when I'm home. Eventually I'll release to the world my own project as myself but for the time being I'm sitting in the pilot seat of 3% and seeing where it goes.

Thanks Angus.

LUKE M c KENNA

The Australian Sensation

How did you first get into wrestling? What sparked your interest and made you want to give it a try?

I first fell in love with professional wrestling at around 6 or 7 years old. My Nonna used to babysit me, and she always had wrestling on in the background. Watching legends like Mario Milano and Killer Kowalski captivated me. As I grew older, my interest shifted to larger-than-life stars like Hulk Hogan, The Ultimate Warrior, Stone Cold Steve Austin, and The Rock.

At 10, my parents enrolled me in gymnastics, not realising it would be a game changer. I vividly remember a gym competition where I performed a backflip, but no one noticedexcept my Mum. Later, I watched Jeff Hardy's Swanton Bomb and thought that’s what I

wanted to do. The crowd loved it, and that sparked my passion for wrestling.

Can you tell us a bit about your career so far? Have there been any standout matches or events?

My career has been more than I ever imagined. I've gone from wrestling in a backyard for five friends to performing on TV for thousands in Mexico, the USA, Asia, and Australia. One of my favorite matches was against my best friend, Mecha Wolf. A highlight for me was meeting and chatting with Stone Cold Steve Austin during a WWE developmental tryout in Florida in 2012; he was my childhood idol. What sort of training is involved in being a professional wrestler?

I started the way many wrestlers do, wrestling in the backyard with friends, despite knowing it was discouraged. PLEASE DON'T

TRY THIS AT HOME! There are so many amazing wrestling schools around, 3 Count in Brisbane is close and fantastic. Eventually, at 20, I moved to the USA and trained comprehensively, notably at FCW camp, now known as WWE NXT.

Training involves much more than executing moves; it’s about storytelling and safety. Anyone can learn the basics, but how you adopt and adapt them is what distinguishes you. The audience wants to see someone different, someone who takes them away from their everyday lives for 10 to 15 minutes. While the physical aspect is critical, there's also a complex psychology behind every match. A big part of wrestling is putting on a good show and having a persona in the ring. Do you have any signature moves or looks you’re known for?

Yes, I portray a horror character, channeling

my love for every horror movie I’ve watched. I can still execute cool flips, including the Canadian Destroyer, and I have a unique style that involves biting my opponents’ ears and breaking their fingersalthough I'm a nice guy, I promise!

What is it like when you’re on the road travelling for events? Sharing hotels and making memories with fellow wrestlers is some of the best fun you can have. The camaraderie often proves more enjoyable than the shows themselves. What sort of impact does the crowd have on you when you’re in a match?

Australian wrestling feels like one great family. Preparing for a show is both nerve-wracking and fun, but we know we’ve got each other’s backs.

The crowd influences everything in a match. While we know the outcome is predetermined, the audience's reactions dictate the flow. Recently, I wrestled in Queensland, where the crowd booed me but cheered for my opponent. I had my opponent taunt the crowd, which garnered cheers. When I tried doing the same, I purposely slipped off the turnbuckle, making a fool of myself, allowing the crowd to cheer. If it weren’t for their reactions, I would not have called that spot on the fly and just started the match.

What’s the atmosphere like amongst all the wrestlers when you’re preparing for an event? What’s the community like here in Australia and on the Mid North Coast? Australian wrestling feels like one great family. Preparing for a show is both nerve-wracking and fun, but we know we’ve got each other’s backs. Unfortunately, the wrestling scene isn't huge on the Mid North Coast. While the Gold Coast, Brisbane, Newcastle, and Sydney thrive, I've been pushing promoters to give Coffs a chance.

Do you have any plans for the future of your wrestling career?

I have been doing this for 20 years. I have definitely taken a step back from doing 3-5 shows a week like I used to in my 20s. However, I still make guest appearances at various shows around the country. In the new year, I will be regularly working with a few promotions in Queensland as part of my new tag team "Bad Blood" with my partner Zac Reynolds. These promotions include Pro Wrestling League, Wide Bay Pro Wrestling, and Atomic Pro Wrestling which are not too far from Coffs - I post all my upcoming shows on my instagram @tas_craven

Thanks Luke.

ARTIST of the MONTH

Josie

ose

ATKINSON FLANDERS

Gumbaynggirr artist Josie Rose

Atkinson Flanders has recently opened her first solo exhibition Bowerbird at the Wadjar Regional Indigenous Gallery, located at the Yarrawarra Aboriginal Cultural Centre.

Tinstallation of her vibrant ghost net weaving pieces created using collected debris and plastic from the Coffs Creek, turning waste into something of beauty and inviting audiences to reflect on the importance of caring for Country and honouring cultural connections to land, water and sky.

Giinagay Josie. Congratulations on your debut solo exhibition, Bowerbird! Can you tell us about the inspiration behind this collection and why it’s significant to you as a Gumbaynggirr artist?

Giinagay! Darrandung - thank you I feel like a solo exhibition is a rite of passage in the creative storytelling platform, to transition from emerging to a professional artist. I love birds and I often walked past a satin bowerbird building his nest from blue plastic. This was bittersweet, watching both the beauty of the elaborate creation of a beautiful nest full of pride and imagination but made from microplastics. I felt a connection to the bower bird and the identity of adapting and expressing oneself with the perfectly imperfect resources within reach at any given time. This collection of pieces reflect a short and intense journey becoming a self taught, full time artist and storyteller. This is a life lived closer to my

present identity and cultural ways of being and independently creating in a decolonised office space.

The materials in Bowerbird were collected from sacred waterways. How did this process impact you as you transformed debris into art?

I think for all Gumbaynggirr traditional custodians, the First Nations diaspora community and the stellar non-for-profit organisation Ozfish who are working tirelessly to improve the quality, in particular the Ozfish team, family, friends, weavers, researchers, the Coffs coast community, official supporters, sponsors and local organizations acknowledge the devastating damage caused by pollution. However, it is inspiring to witness the community from all walks of life join in unity to donate time to heal Country because she supports our entire society. Coffs Creek is heartbreaking because this water, known as buluunggal which translates to mullet the Gumbaynggirr is sacred to Country.

The ghost net weaving featured in Bowerbird is a unique and powerful medium. What drew you to this practice, and how does it align with your artistic and cultural values?

Ghost net weaving drew me in because it’s so much more than an art form - it’s a story, a connection, and a call to action. It transforms

something harmful, like abandoned fishing nets and marine debris, into something beautiful and meaningful. I first became aware of ghost net weaving through the Cairns Indigenous Arts Fair and I felt such awe. One year I attended the event and gained more awe and respect for the communities who were working to keep three traditional lands, water and airways clean from the onslaught of rubbish travelling from Indonesia to the top end.

Dee Murphy a longtime pipeclay community member and supporter of Yarrawarra has been weaving for many decades and in particular has been ghost net weaving for the last decade using collected rubbish from along the coastline and waterways. Dee’s weaving will appear in the larger than life not for profit installation alongside the weaving created from Dee’s tutorialship within an art collective of women who donated time and energy to reinforce the important message of keeping Gumbaynggirr waterways clean. This broader network was able to be supported by the fantastic Arts Mid North Coast doing wonderful things for artists in the region.

You’ve contributed to the Gumbaynggirr arts community in many ways, from workshops to collaborative projects. Can you share a bit about some of these projects?

My debut solo exhibition, Bowerbird is an

eclectic collection of abstract and symbolic artworks inspired by the last 6 years working consistently as an emerging, self taught artist and drawing on everything available to support the transition to professional full-time artist. In the last 12 months I’ve worked as a full-time artist with different income streams but all creative such as teaching art, doing face painting and more.

As a youth I didn’t grow up on Country immersed in family and kinship systems or Gumbaynggirr culture but with my brown skin and identified Aboriginal identity I struggled with my diaspora identity. I did however grow up in a happy go lucky family with a focus on caring for the environment and reducing the human footprint upon mother earth.

coast of NSW and Aotearoa, NZ. I hold fond memories of 14 hour road trips with my Nana Patti from Sydney to Coolum, QLD. These travels would start before dawn and end after dusk and filled me with a sense of the land, air and water and the vivid bright, dramatic and bold colours and landscape.

Your art is known for its bold colours and intricate patterns. Can you share more about your techniques and creative processes?

I was born with a big imagination and the inspiration behind this collection is from a place of determination to navigate society as a brown skinned person who feels everything deeply. I grew up off Country as part of the diaspora First Nations community on the east

The opening event for Bowerbird was held on December 14th. How did you feel seeing the community’s reaction to your work? Can you share some special moments from the event?

It was a great experience seeing family, friends and community engage in this special moment in my creative journey. I think self representation is important and I am so grateful to everyone who has supported me as an artist, my family, friends and the community. I think keeping waterways clean is an important conversation now and in the future. It’s great to see people talking about this matter.

Environmental stewardship is central to Bowerbird. What message do you hope this exhibition conveys about the importance of caring for Country and our waterways?

I think partnering with Ozfish and working alongside a small team with decades of commitment to cleaning up Gumbaynggirr Country and waterways in addition to planting more trees was the first step in creating a like minded and dedicated community. For Gumbaynggirr people, water is life, deeply woven into our traditions and identity. By turning waste into art, this exhibition shows that even the smallest actions, like cleaning up a creek or rethinking single-use plastics, can have a ripple effect and encourage people to recognise the urgent need to protect these vital environments and inspire them to take action.

Where can we find out more about your work and the Bowerbird exhibition?

Please visit Yarrawarra Aboriginal Cultural Centre and check out the Bowerbird exhibition at the Wadjaar Regional Indigenous Gallery and sign the visitors book! Please go to facebook and follow Ozfish Unlimited and reach out via FB messenger or through the website link. Check out the Ozfish website to see the great work Ozfish is doing locally and around Australia. Anyone who would like to volunteer in 2025 clean ups is most welcome. Please sign up to my artist talk with a free 4 hour ghostnet and plastic weaving workshop with lunch. ARTIST of the MONTH

Stella Avdi

Stella Avdi is a Bellingen based artist who uses a mix of traditional and digital mediums to create unique art prints that reflect her mood and the world around her.

Hi Stella, can you tell us a bit about your artistic journey? What inspired you to become a visual/ graphic artist?

I've loved art for as long as I can remember - always drawing, painting, and applying a creative approach to whatever I was doing. I'm a very visual person, and I love telling stories through my interpretation of colour and expression. I have always enjoyed exploring new creative techniques and art has always been a way for me to express myself and interpret the world around me. I’ve always been drawn to the way colour can evoke emotion, and that has shaped how I view and create art. Exploring new mediums has always been a part of my creative journey, and it continues to inspire me to this day. As I grew older, I started to experiment with more diverse forms of art moving away from traditional fine art to discover digital techniques, which opened up new avenues for creativity. My digital approach evolved from my curiosity to explore beyond traditional fine art. I wanted to see how I could integrate creativity into my professional work, finding new ways to express ideas and connect with others visually. It’s been exciting to explore how digital art can complement and enhance the traditional methods I use. Your prints have a unique style. How would you describe your artistic aesthetic,

I wanted to see how I could integrate creativity into my professional work, finding new ways to express ideas and connect with others visually.

and what influences your work?

I’ve always loved an abstract approach to art. While realism is beautiful, I aim to offer a different visual representation of my subjects. For example, when I create pet portraits, I try to capture more than just the appearance of the animal. My goal is to evoke the emotion and essence of the animal, using colour and shape to create a unique piece that feels personal and vibrant.

Recently, I’ve thrown myself into floral prints, which have become my current passion. I’m captivated by experimenting with harmonious

colour combinations and embracing a natural, free-flowing approach to the elements in each piece. For these, I’d say I’m inspired by the bold and playful aesthetic of Marimekko, as well as any illustrator who shares a fearless approach to colour and abstraction. Their work encourages me to push boundaries and not be afraid of unexpected colour choices. I would describe my artistic aesthetic as explorative, vibrant, and deeply personalalways seeking to tell a story through colour and form. Each piece feels like a snapshot of my journey and mood at the time. My style is about embracing creativity without limitations, and I think that’s what makes it stand out.

Continued over...

ARTIST of the MONTH

How do you usually come up with ideas for a new piece? Can you walk us through your creative process?

At other times, my approach is purely instinctive. I’ll sit down and draw whatever comes to mind or catches my eye, le ing the process soothe and centre me.

My creative process is always rooted in colour. A striking combination - whether found on packaging, a Pinterest board, or in the natural world - often sparks my imagination and sets the tone for my work. Colour combinations, whether bold or subtle, are the first thing I notice. When I come across a palette that resonates with me, I immediately feel inspired to create. I let this theme guide me as I move into the next steps of my process.

From there, I let the process flow organically, experimenting with freeform drawing and discovering how shapes and forms can harmonise. I rarely plan out every detail before I start and prefer to let the work come together as I go. Sometimes, my drawings will begin as simple lines or shapes and develop into something unexpected.

When it comes to my animal prints, each piece begins with a subject, a pet of my own or a

family member’s. These are translated into keepsakes that capture their essence and emotion. For me, creating art about something personal or close to me makes the piece more meaningful.

At other times, my approach is purely instinctive. I’ll sit down and draw whatever comes to mind or catches my eye, letting the process soothe and centre me. For me it's a way to disconnect from daily life and connect with my creativity. What techniques or tools do you use to create your prints? Do you prefer traditional methods, digital, or a mix of both?

My creative process blends the best of both traditional and digital mediums. I love fine line drawing, often working with ink pens on watercolour paper to create intricate, tactile designs.

Many of these traditional pieces serve as a foundation, which I then translate into

digital form using Procreate or Illustrator. Working digitally allows me to expand on my ideas, adding layers of colour, texture, and refinement. The beauty of digital work is that it offers endless possibilities for tweaking and experimenting!

The combination of traditional and digital techniques enables me to explore both worlds and create a diverse range of work, from raw sketches to polished digital prints. The two methods complement each other, allowing me to achieve a balance of precision and organic fluidity.

Do you have a particular piece that you’re especially proud of? What’s the story behind it?

One piece I’m particularly proud of is a recent floral illustration titled Part 2. It was inspired by a photo I took of the ocean during a sunset. The warm yellow of the setting sun contrasted so beautifully against the deep blue of the sea. It felt like a perfect moment in time, and I was

instantly inspired to capture that harmony in a piece of art.

The process was cathartic - working with flowing lines and freeform shapes allowed me to reflect my mood, creating a piece that feels both vibrant and deeply personal. The spontaneity of the lines and the fluidity of the composition reflected my inner state as I worked, and that’s what makes this piece stand out to me.

Do you offer custom designs or commissioned pieces? If so, how does that process differ from creating your own work?

I do! The process isn’t too different from my usual creative approach. I typically start by discussing the client’s vision, asking about their preferred colours, what they want captured, and how they’d like the final piece displayed. This collaborative conversation helps me understand their needs and allows me to incorporate their preferences while still maintaining my unique style.

From there, I design while keeping their preferences in mind, ensuring the result feels personal and unique to them. I find that commissioned work gives me an opportunity to create something special for someone, which is always a rewarding experience.

What are your goals for the future as an artist? Are there any new techniques or themes you’d like to explore?

My main goal as an artist is to continue creating and evolving. I’d love to dedicate more time to developing a cohesive portfolio of floral prints

as an extended project, exploring how different themes and color palettes can unify my work. I live in such a beautiful place and I’m excited to explore even more variations and compositions with what surrounds me.

I’m also eager to dive deeper into photography, capturing the world around me to use as inspiration. Whether translating these moments into watercolour paintings or creating standalone pieces, photography offers a new way to connect with my surroundings and expand my artistic approach.

Ultimately, my goal is to keep exploring, experimenting, and sharing my art with others, pushing myself creatively while finding new ways to connect with my audience.

Where can we check out your work or get in touch?

You can explore my print designs via @stell.does. prints on Instagram and my photography on @ stell.does.photos. I love connecting with others who appreciate creativity, so feel free to reach out via direct message if you’d like to discuss custom commissions or collaborations.

Thanks Stella.

LIQUOR ACCORD Coffs Harbour

What is the Coffs Harbour Liquor Accord (CHLA)?

The CHLA is an incorporated body comprising various stakeholders from the greater Coffs Harbour area. We tackle local liquor licensing issues proactively, focusing on harm minimisation through best-practice Responsible Service of Alcohol (RSA) initiatives. By working closely with the community and local police, we implement policies to reduce alcohol-related disruptions.

Who is involved?

Our members include pubs, clubs, restaurants, resorts, bottle shops, event centres, small bars, and breweries. We also collaborate with police, council, and other interested groups. With approximately 30-50 registered financial members, a full list is available on our website. What is your current focus?

Our primary focus is behaviour. We’ve implemented a Multi Venue Barring (MVB) system, barring problematic individuals from

all CHLA-licensed venues. Currently, over 100 individuals are listed. Key offences include:

• Fail to Quit: Failure to leave a venue when asked may result in a one-year ban and a $550 fine.

• Anti-Social Behaviour: Aggression, intimidation, or property damage leads to bans of 1-3 years.

• Underage Drinking: Those under 18 caught entering a venue, possessing fake ID, or drinking will be banned until they turn 19. Additional penalties include fines and P-plate license extensions.

• Supplying Fake ID to Minors: Carries a one-year ban and significant fines. Visit our website for a full list of offences and penalties.

Tell us about your recent Charity Golf Day. This year, we held our inaugural CHLA Christmas Charity Cup Golf Day. The event was a tremendous success, raising $11,500 for local domestic violence support organisations. We actively support other charities and foster meaningful connections within the hospitality industry to promote training, support, and awareness.

What’s your advice for the community?

Statistics show that licensed venues are the safest places to enjoy alcohol responsibly. This summer, we encourage everyone to support our local venues in a safe and respectful manner. Educate those under 18 about the rules of licensed premises. Remember, BARRED FROM ONE, BARRED FROM ALL

The Coffs Harbour Liquor Accord had been developed as a partnership involving the input and cooperation of the key stake holders. It is based on harm minimisation and Responsible Service of Alcohol principles contained within the liquor laws. All parties undertake to implement the principles to improve the safety and environment in the Coffs Harbour local area. The underpinning strategy is to address community issues by community members in a proactive way that will deliver best outcomes for all parties including local licensees, Police, the Roads & Traffic Authority, the Mid North Coast Area Health Service, Coffs Harbour City Council, licensing authorities, Health Services, the business community, residents and visitors.

THE FUNK THIEVES

The Presets are coming to the Hoey Moey for a DJ set on Thursday 23rd January 2025, so we spoke to Kim Moyes ahead of the show!

HKIM MOYES

i Kim, The Presets have had a massive impact on the Australian music scene. How does it feel to still be performing and connecting with fans after all these years?

Well, it feels like a massive privilege to be honest. It just seems like yesterday when I was a struggling musician running around town trying to make $20, working part-time jobs and playing in other people's bands. It would be easy to take it all for granted but I still

pinch myself that we are able to do this as a profession and that we still have an audience of people still interested in what we do. I guess I just feel lucky, sometimes I feel like we won the lottery. Especially now, it's hard to be a band trying to break through, I couldn't imagine what it would be like. So yeah, in short I feel very grateful.

Your music often blends genres in innovative ways. How would you describe The Presets' sound in 2024? I think the way the music sounds is just a

byproduct of the people that Julian and I are and the shared energy that we create. I think our interests are quite diverse and it's always a struggle to try to make something coherent that brings together all of the things that we are interested in at one particular time. I think the one guiding light that we try to strive for is to aim for it to be fun, and energetic! We feel like we try to fill a space and the purpose of it is for people to have a good time. Then within that I think we try to throw as many things in there as possible to keep it interesting. I think in electronic and dance music in particular, there is such a potential to be innovative and cutting edge, and use the latest greatest sounds, and that's one of the aspects that's good about it. However, on the other hand it's also something that can become incredibly dated or stale and you can get too fixated with genres over what the purpose of it is, and I think that we clocked that early on as fans going out to clubs and raves. It always seemed like we were interested in what was coming off the stage in terms of energy, and I think that coming from a background of classical music, live performance is always a really important aspect for us. I think it's really just trying to get as much energy and interest in there as possible without crossing the line into a full-blown corny, cheesy, generic world. I feel like I'm opening Pandora's box every time I try to answer one of these questions! Coffs Harbour is gearing up for your upcoming show. What can fans expect from this performance? Any surprises in the setlist?

of Presets material. It's a DJ set so I think people should brace themselves for that. We do DJ a lot of other people's music as well as our own. I think that they should really just expect to have nothing short of the greatest night of their lives!

With so many iconic tracks in your discography, do you have a favourite song to perform live? Why does it stand out to you?

My People always goes off, I’m never not surprised at how well it goes down and it’s one of those really rare pieces that just seems to get more and more powerful with age, which is crazy to think that we were able to make something like that 15 years ago...

Well they can expect to hear a good slab

We play these songs so many times that I guess maybe the gloss wears off a little bit after a while for us personally, but there are a couple of songs that haven't seemed to fade in terms of crowd reaction and response. ‘My People’ always goes off. I'm never not surprised at how well it goes down and it's one of those really rare pieces that just seems to get more and more powerful with age, which is crazy to think that we were able to make something like that 15 years ago or whatever. On that level, it's very enjoyable to watch, and it's very enjoyable to get that kind of love and feedback. In terms of personal favourites, I guess I have favourites for different reasons and maybe the things that I really like we wouldn't play live or even in the DJ set, because they might be a little bit more introspective or not really something that's super obvious. There's a track off Apocalypso called Aeons, and it's the only instrumental off that album, and we played it in our live set when we were touring the album in 2008/2009 but we’d never play it now. I always really love that, because I just felt like it was coming from a very honest, personal place for us, whereas a lot of the music now we're really thinking about how it will work in terms of a crowd and on a dance floor. It's really nice when you get those very

rare moments to not have to think about that and just put something down purely for an emotional effect. So I'd pick that as a sort of touchstone for something that I really love.

What has been inspiring your music creation these days?

Well, it's a constant struggle of paralysing doubt and whether or not you can actually continue to improve! You do it for so long there's always things about what you do that bugs you, but you keep treading the same ground. I guess I've just been really focused on trying to make music that I would be able to slot into my DJ sets that doesn't feel out of place, which is a lot harder than it sounds, butI'm starting to get there - so that's been an inspiring challenge. You've gotta be quite strict with yourself about whether or not something works or not, but I think it is starting to get there so yeah, that's something.

What’s the best thing about touring regional areas like Coffs Harbour? Do these shows feel different compared to big-city gigs?

I actually think the people in the crowds are probably more up for it than in the big cities! I always enjoy playing in regional towns or outside of the cities. I love travelling. I love doing the drive. I love staying in different parts of the country. The country’s changed so much since I first started touring as a musician and it's such a great privilege to be able to drive around and get to see everything, and not just go to the same four cities over and over again. It's fun, it's a beautiful country!

What’s next for The Presets after this tour? Are there any exciting projects or plans on the horizon?

We are working on new material, so hopefully we get something out sooner rather than later, but these things always seem to take longer and longer, especially the older that we get! Stay tuned. Thanks Kim.

Camardi Kri 

What inspired you to become a florist, and how did you get started in this profession? I always loved all the different colours and textures of flowers and after doing work experience in Year 10 at a florist shop in Sydney I fell in love with them. Can you share any formal training or apprenticeships that shaped your skills? Leaving school I was employed as a trainee florist and completed a two year Commercial Floristry Course at Ultimo TAFE and then followed up with a one year Advanced Floristry Design course and have been a florist ever since.

What's in season at the moment? There are so many amazing flowers in season at the moment but some of my favorites are Australian Natives such as Proteas, Banksias, Kangaroo Paw as well as some tropical flowers such as Heliconias and Gingers. What types of events do

you specialise in? Being in the floristry industry for over 35 years we can assist in all areas of floristry including weddings, funerals, corporate functions, birthdays and engagements among many others, but I do love the every day interaction with my customers and helping them bring their ideas to reality.

Have you noticed any emerging trends in floral design that excites you? I have noticed that Australian Natives are becoming more popular and arrangements that are informal and a little more wild and non-traditional are popular. It is exciting when you are given a creative licence to come up with a floral arrangement, and the smile that you see on that person's face when they see what you have created for them.

How can we get in touch?

KELI HOLIDAY

Keli Holiday will be performing JESTERMAN – e Final Clown Tour at the Hoey Moey on Saturday 4th January. Keli Holiday, the new king of rock and roll swagger, was created by Adam Hyde (one half of multi ARIA award winning, 10x platinum duo Peking Duk). We had a chat with Adam ahead of the Co s Coast show.

eli Holiday has a distinct sound compared to your work with Peking Duk. How would you describe the vibe and energy of Keli Holiday’s music?

Keli holiday is my personal account of what I’ve got to say from my perspective about everything and anything I feel like. There’s no filter.

What inspired you to explore this solo project?

What’s been the most rewarding part of performing as Keli Holiday so far? Any standout moments that you’ll always remember?

Hearing people sing every word at shows is wild. I’m always excited for what’s to come and in a strange way the unexperienced is a constant reward that I have the pleasure of reaping.

How does Keli Holiday allow you to express yourself differently than your other projects?

How do you balance your work with Keli Holiday and Peking Duk? Does shifting between the two projects present challenges, or do they feed into each other creatively?

I needed to say things that couldn’t be told via electronic music. Some were too whiny and personal and wouldn’t make sense to be shared over a dance beat nor from anyone else but me.

I want to meet you all!! Come to the show, let’s have a chat and a dance. Hopefully they’ll open up to some of the emotion in the songs I’m playing.

Lately I’ve been loving it as it’s regimented with Peking Duk sessions and Keli Holiday sessions so that day I’ll go in knowing what the zone is.

Your music as Keli Holiday is often described as nostalgic. What influences shaped this sound?

The first album was heavily influenced by New Order and The Cure but now I’m leaning more into my instincts of what comes naturally to me, which is simplicity, thanks to The Ramones.

The storytelling in your lyrics feels personal and introspective. Can you share what inspires the themes and stories behind your songs?

What’s next for Keli Holiday? Can we expect new music or any exciting projects after this tour?

I'm working on an album that I can’t wait to share.

Lastly, what’s your message to fans coming out to see you in Coffs Harbour? What do you hope they’ll take away from the experience?

I guess it’s got to come from a real place to be felt. If it’s made up it’s easily detected to be fraud so I always try my best to shoot from the hip and write from the heart.

I want to meet you all!! Come to the show, let’s have a chat and a dance. Hopefully they’ll open up to some of the emotion in the songs I’m playing. Whether that's raw primal dancing or getting a little emo on the acoustic songs, I don’t mind. I’m excited.

Thanks Adam.

Winery Raleigh + HOUSE

We have EXCITING news! Brent and Belinda Watson from Coffs Harbour Trike and Private Tours are opening the Raleigh Winery!

The award-winning restaurant is well known in the region, and we would love to welcome back the locals and tourists to our cafe. It’s time that the back deck was opened again so everyone can enjoy the stunning outlook over the vineyard and the Bellinger River while relaxing with their family and friends. The Raleigh Winery is Australia’s most easterly vineyard, situated south of Coffs Harbour and on the banks of the Bellinger River. It is a place where you can come and sit in the grassed area between the vines and watch the day go by.

Brent and Belinda have a connection to the Winery having had their wedding reception there in 2021 and Belinda grew up on a now third generation dairy farm less than 5km’s away. The winery will be an extension

to our tourism business with us now offering Tours around this beautiful region on our Trike and Bus Tours, find all the information that you need from the Urunga Visitor Information Centre, our new place to sit and taste the local flavours, savour some delectable sips and indulge in the breathtaking views from the Café.

Brent and Belinda have been in business together since 2021 and they are looking forward to the next part of their adventurous journey and invite you all to come along with them. On the 14th of December this year Brent and Belinda won big at the Coffs Coast Business Awards taking home the win for Tourism, Experiences and Events and they are excited to put this passion and commitment into the Raleigh Winery. “We are going to start out small at the Winery but there are huge plans ahead.”

A Fresh haer for Urunga

What has led to the decision to re-open and revitalise the Tourist Centre and how did you get involved? We are locals and we love where we live, work and play! Belinda was born and bred on a dairy farm in Raleigh and Brent came to Urunga when he was 13 to live with his Dad who was the bar manager at the Ocean View Hotel. Every day we would drive past the empty Visitor Information Centre and say what a shame that that’s been closed for so long. So, one day Brent turned around and said to Belinda let’s approach council and see what we can do about it. After completing an EOI and from the huge support of the locals on social media, we put everything we had into once again opening the doors to this wonderful building. We purchased Coffs Harbour Trike Tours in April 2021 and posted on their socials - “We are thrilled to continue on touring in this beautiful

area with big plans ahead.” We have now become Coffs Harbour Trike and Private Tours, have expanded and bought a Tour Bus, and secured the lease for the Visitor Information Centre Building on Giinagay Way in Urunga. Still with “Big Plans” we are so excited for our future. Our love for our region is HUGE and we get such a buzz showing it off to visitors and locals alike.

is stunning region has it all, from the mountains to the sea and everywhere in between, there is so much exploring to do.

Is the Visitor Information Centre handy for locals and tourists and why should they pop in? The VIC is open Monday to Friday 10am to 2pm with our Trike and Bus Tours continuing to run 7 days a week. There is plenty of parking at the back of the building and there is also a huge parking bay at the front that a vehicle towing a caravan can easily pull into.

At the centre we offer a range of exciting experiences and services, including Coffs Harbour Trike and Private Tours, short tours around Urunga for just $25 pp during the centre’s hours, visitor information, Urunga merch, art classes, a meeting space, local pop-

up shops, local artisans and makers, coffee, tea and cakes, slushies, front window displays, a local notice board and much more. It is so important to support local and that is what the VIC is all about.

Urunga is the gateway to Waterfall Way which makes it easy to recommend places to visit and businesses to support. This stunning region has it all, from the mountains to the sea and everywhere in between, there is so much exploring to do.

Tell us a little more about the award you won this year? We are still shouting from the rooftops that we won GOLD at the 2024 North Coast Tourism Awards in the category of Tour and Transport Operator of the Year. This is an incredible achievement for our small business, and we couldnt be prouder. We are so grateful to our guests that have been a part of our journey so far and to Coffs Coast, Bellingen Shire and Destination North Coast for their continued support. We love what we do, and we love being a part of this community.

Give us a call, send us an email, follow us on Facebook and Instagram, check out our website or come in and see us at the Urunga Visitor Information Centre. Let us show you what the Mid North Coast has to offer you!

BAKERY Wood Fired D O R R I G O

CBRIAN HOFFMAN

an you share the story behind your bakery?

What inspired you to open it?

The bakery story began as a dream of Ronald Reece, who in 1942 was busy baking the town’s bread supplies from the rear of the Heritage Hotel. He was supplying fresh bread and baked goods to a quickly establishing township that was attracting settlers and had become a stop over destination for the many travellers heading inland.

He bought the land across the road and began the massive task of purchasing and arranging the transport of the 60,000 Armidale and Glen Innes blue bricks, 2,000 at a time, needed to build the bakery building and the massive wood fired scotch ovens. This task took over two years to complete due to the limited options of transport during 1942 and the scarcity of the bluestone bricks due to major building projects in Amidale, a city of beautiful blue stone churches and architecture. The two ovens were designed with a floor area for each of 4m x 3m, with

an arched ceiling, a firebox on one side of each main chamber with a flue on the opposite side. The oven shell is composed of layers of bricks and sand that are connected via steel rods that enable them to contract and expand without pulling apart. The ovens required 30 tonne of sand below and 20 tonnes above to work as insulation to hold the heat for a 20 hour period before another firing up is required. This massive task, begun in the second World War, was completed by professional oven builders The Hopwood Brothers, who encased their initials into the façade of the building for posterity. It was completed in 1948 and began producing quality bread, cakes, pies and pastries on the premises using traditional recipes that have been passed down through the following generations of craftsmen bakers, skilled in the art of wood fired baking.

The ovens required 30 tonne of sand below and 20 tonnes above to work as insulation to hold the heat for a 20 hour period before another firing up is required.

What inspired you to make it your business?

The bakery was attractive to me as a business because it had always been a family based operation and I wished to continue this tradition with my own family.

Today we have a dedicated team of skilled workers that includes 3 generations from my own family.

What is your baking background or any formal training that you’ve had in the industry?

Wood fired baking is a very specialised craft and even though I had experience with different types of food businesses, my baking education began at the woodfired ovens with the current team using them. I have owned the bakery business since 2007 and have also

trained other bakers during this tenure. What types of baked goods do you specialise in, and what makes them unique?

Our specialty lies in the “woodfired” term which produces beautiful results with all our baked goods. We also rely on the traditional recipes that result in tried and true slices and pastries. Some favourites are the custard slice and also the apple slice which have their own band of regular customers. We also do a wide range of other sweets, some that include favourite ingredients from our latest range ‘The Bakarindi Bush Produce’ company that use and promote indigenous ingredients such as Davidson Plum Jam. This has resulted in a delicious chocolate fudge slice with this beautiful jam swirled through the topping and sprinkled with dried, ground Davidson Plums, a real taste sensation called The Rainforest Slice. This range is gradually being increased as we experiment with these diverse products with lemon myrtle high on the list.

Are there any signature items that customers can’t resist? Can you tell us about them?

The bakery also has a wide range of pies, sausage rolls and pasties that have their own

customer favourites that include the chunky beef and pepper pie, the chilli beef and cheese pie and the beef, jalapeno and cheese pie. We also have a delicious range of lamb pies, chicken pies and vegetarian options including a delicious curried vegetable pie. Our pastie range also has the spinach and ricotta pastie and the tomato, cheese and onion pastie for our vegetarian customers with the chicken, mushroom and fettucine pastie and the sweet curried chicken and rice pastie being some of the favourites.

Our specialty lies in the “woodfired” term which produces beautiful results with all our baked goods. We also rely on the traditional recipes that result in tried and true slices and pastries.

The sausage roll range is also very popular with the plain sausage roll using a traditional recipe remains a long time firm favourite. There are added varieties including cheese and bacon, garlic and cheese, sweet chilli and vegetarian options are the spinach and cheese and the new falafel sausage roll. How do you create a welcoming atmosphere for your customers when they visit your bakery?

Our shop has been recently renovated with an eye to restoring some of its beautiful, original features such as the large front bay window and the front entrance double doors that still contain their original rippled glass. The old timber display shelving for the freshly baked bread products for sale was also restored to its former glory to help this historic old building retain its practical features. A new large, icy airconditioner is also a very welcome addition to the comfort of our customers in the summer heat.

Deli

Can you tell us about the story behind The Dorrigo Deli, what inspired you to open this shop in a rural setting?

e Dorrigo Deli sources locally made specialty food products, as well as a wide range of gourmet delicatessen items. Located in the heart of Dorrigo, we celebrate the produce and makers of the plateau and surrounding region.

The journey of The Dorrigo Deli began when my husband Ben and I noticed the growing popularity of gourmet items we offered at The Dorrigo Butcher, which we had owned for about two years. Alongside our award-winning smokehouse products, we introduced a small deli fridge stocked with items like cheeses, paté, and olives. The positive response from customers sparked hope and we decided to take a bold step and open a dedicated delicatessen. Starting small in the first year, we focused on providing high-quality deli products. As the business grew, we moved to a larger shop in town, where we expanded our offerings to include coffee, deli sandwiches, and an even wider range of delicatessen items.

What was your journey like in bringing this deli to life?

The journey of bringing The Dorrigo Deli to life has been one of steady growth and adaptability. We started small, operating from a little shop at the end of the street, managing quiet days with just one person running the deli at a time. This setup allowed us the flexibility to balance another busy business and being with our two young children.

The decision to move to a larger shop was a pivotal moment for us and an opportunity we couldn’t pass up. It was a big step that required us to double our staff and master the art of making great coffee. It’s been a challenging yet rewarding experience, and we’re proud of how far we’ve come! What types of products do you specialise in, and how do you choose the items you carry in your shop?

We specialise in offering fresh delicatessen items like meats, cheeses, pâté, breads and dips, along with a wide selection of shelf products. Our focus is on sourcing highquality and unique ingredients, guided by our

customers' needs and requests. By listening to what our community desires, whether it's items they’d otherwise travel to find or cherished delicacies from home or abroad, we’re building a reputation for exceptional offerings. While managing stock and deliveries in a small town has its challenges, our steadily growing reputation has allowed us to expand our range and better serve our customers.

Can you highlight any unique or signature products that are exclusive to your deli?

Unique to The Dorrigo Deli are our smokehouse smallgoods, crafted by The Dorrigo Butcher, including award-winning ham, pastrami, and jerky, as well as lamb ham, beersticks, and chorizo. We also prepare fresh dips each week and create dressings for our deli sandwiches - because you can’t have an exceptional Reuben without Dorrigo beef pastrami and our homemade russian dressing! Additionally, we pride ourselves on stocking as many local products as possible, offering a wide variety all in one place.

How important is local sourcing in your product selection, and which local suppliers do you partner with?

Local sourcing has always been at the heart of what we do, starting with The Dorrigo Butcher and continuing with The Dorrigo Deli. We’re passionate about supporting local businesses, makers, and farmers, and take pride in being part of such a rich food bowl area. We supply our smokehouse ham to select local food businesses such as Peaches Patisserie, and Canopy Cafe at the Rainforest Centre. Our regional suppliers include Demlane Farm condiments, Dorrigo Pepper products, and a variety of locally made relishes, pasta, sauces, miso, black garlic, tea, coffee, bread, and flowers. Some items are available yearround, while others are seasonal, reflecting the true experience of supporting local produce. What kind of atmosphere do you strive to create for your customers when they visit your delicatessen?

creativity, and the joy of sharing simple, delicious moments with loved ones. We want customers to step inside and feel drawn to take something special home, something that sparks excitement and connection through food.

How does your deli engage with the local community, and what events or activities do you participate in?

We’re committed to our close-knit community, regularly sponsoring and donating to various events, groups, and schools. Supporting and uplifting other local businesses and organisations is something we truly value, and we’re proud to play a part in strengthening our community connections.

Unique to e Dorrigo Deli are our smokehouse smallgoods, cra ed by e Dorrigo Butcher, including award-winning ham, pastrami, and jerky, as well as lamb ham, beersticks, and chorizo.

At The Dorrigo Deli, we strive to create an atmosphere that is welcoming, where every corner invites inspiration. Our aim is to provide a space that encourages cooking,

How do you handle competition from larger grocery stores or supermarkets?

In our small town, we face the challenge of a limited local population and the competition from large supermarkets in Coffs Harbour and Armidale, which deliver daily. However, we stand out by offering higher quality products, unique and locally sourced items, and creating a shopping experience that’s both enjoyable and inviting. We want our

customers to feel confident that by shopping with us, they are supporting local businesses, farmers, and makers.

How do you keep your menu or product selection fresh and appealing to returning customers?

We’re always on the lookout for new inspiration and exciting combinations to try. Our staff, who are all passionate about food, love sharing delicious recipes and ideas with one another. This constant exchange of inspiration keeps things fresh, so our deli sandwiches, dips, and other offerings are always evolving. We’re always eager to experiment with new creations and share them with our customers.

What are your long-term goals for the deli, and do you have any plans for expansion or new offerings?

We’re always full of ideas and plans for both of our businesses, and we’re excited about the future of our area. We aim to be at the forefront of the region as a food destination. Each year, we expand our offerings, grow our physical space, add more staff, and extend our reach further across the region. Our growth is organic, driven by consistency, and we let our reputation naturally build alongside it.

Heritage

Can you share the story behind the Heritage Hotel Dorrigo? What makes its history unique? Built in 1925 by Michael Feros, this grand hotel is heritage listed and is still owned by the Feros family. It is a classic example of Australian hotel architecture of the 1920s.

Thanks to our classic accommodations and high level of customer service, we’re able to link the past to the present. Heritage features include a soaring parapet, a wrought iron veranda and 1925 tiles, while our internal features include a lead light canopy, stained timber ceilings, picture rails and authentic skirting boards.

After the passing of Michael Feros, his son Peter Feros took the reins, ensuring the hotel’s family legacy lived on. What drew you to manage this establishment, and how has your journey been so far? I have been a local all my life, and had an interest in working locally, rather than moving away from the pristine land we have here in Dorrigo. I am also very family orientated, which is one of the main reasons why I have not

moved out of the area. I decided that I wanted to try something different to the agriculture work I was brought up on whilst living at home with my family on the farm. So I decided that I would give working for the hotel a go. I have worked at the hotel for approximately 5 years, which I have thoroughly enjoyed. I first began work as a bartender which had helped me further develop my social skills. I was given the opportunity to run the hotel at an early age, which to me was an overwhelming but exciting opportunity.

Diners have given great reviews on the newly added Double D Angus beef burgers, most that try it are saying that the burger is one of the best on the Co s Coast.

What role does the hotel play in the local community, and how do you engage with local residents? The hotel plays a vital role in the community, not just as the local watering hole, but as a safe gathering and meeting point for all of those in Dorrigo and the surrounding areas. The hotel offers and provides friendly customer service to any and all patrons who venture through its doors and are always met by happy and enthusiastic staff. While the heritage of the hotel is significant, how does the menu reflect an appeal to current dining trends? While the menu is up to date with the modern style meals, Head Chef, Stephen Locke, always

ensures the use of fresh locally produced products in all dishes on the menu.

Can you highlight any signature dishes that are particularly popular among your patrons? The views of the Head Chef in regards to keeping the quality of food high, always starts with top quality ingredients and always sourced locally.

The international menu has taken off since being introduced. The Nepalese style Butter Chicken is a big hit and diners have given great reviews on the newly added Double D Angus Beef Burgers! Most that try it are saying that the burger is one of the best on the Coffs Coast.

Additionally we only serve the highest quality of black angus beef.

The Mount Christopherson Estate is surrounded by World Heritage national parks & golden beaches with fertile farmland in between and is arguably one of the region’s finest lifestyle estates. We had a chat to property agent Peter Stone of Real Estate of Distinction to find out more….

Can you give us a brief description of the property and its key features? Mount Christopherson Estate is an entire mountain, a majestic landmark! Observed for miles around as you exit Dorrigo to either the north or west, sitting in splendid isolation between the Tyringham Road and the Waterfall Way. At an elevation of 1,000m the modernised 4-bedroom homestead, recently refreshed separate 5-bedroom cabin accommodation and a discreet 3-bedroom country cottage are nestled in its 110 hectares of lush rainforest, towering eucalypts, trails and lookouts over the Plateau.

What makes this property stand out in the current market? The elevated location offers superb views in all directions across the Dorrigo Plateau, the Gondwana forests and National Parks; sunrises, sunsets or starscapes. Extensive lawns can be a footie field, a croquet match, picnic area or marquee party space. Tiered walkways and planted gardens, comprising some 10 acres, abound with flowering shrubs both native and exotic – a riot of seasonal colour and year-round haven for wildlife. Hidden nooks to explore are dotted all over the property - a hide and seek paradise. Yet the flexible range of accommodation offers scope for privacy for family and friends, but then also the potential for income from holiday rentals, retreats or events.

How would you describe the neighbourhood where the property is located? A natural sanctuary and a haven of biodiversity. Over 250 acres of surveyed conservation land and important ecological sites and recently planted koala habitat.

What amenities or attractions are nearby that would appeal to potential buyers?

An exceptional opportunity for an ‘off-grid’ dwelling, high end retreat and accommodations, an exceptional family estate, a holistic retreat and possible corporate getaways and stays.

Who do you believe would be the ideal buyer for this property? A boutique accommodation investment, a high-end family retreat, a retiring cattle family, holistic entrepreneurs, a buyer that appreciates quality and a one off opportunity to live at the top of the world.

What lifestyle or needs does this property cater to? A mountain of possibilities! A natural sanctuary, a haven of biodiversity, a private escape, a hobby farm, rental ecoaccommodation or keep it all for yourself to enjoy.

How does this property fit into current real estate market trends? We feel that the property is not likely to be affected by the current real estate market trend as it is a one off stand out property.

Have you seen any changes in buyer preferences that might affect this property’s appeal? We know that this property is for a unique buyer. Buyers need to escape the claustrophobic environment that the city dwellers have experienced over the last 4 years. Reconnaissance trips to the area indicate that we are getting return visits with a feel that the market is more aligned with current expectations and resulting in more diverse property purchases. The Mount Christopherson Estate offers peace and quiet, seclusion but not isolation and the opportunity of a solid income by expanding the current accommodations to a broader market.

Can you share any background on the property, such as its age, history, or previous renovations? Mount Christopherson Estate was the product of one woman’s vision, Ralda Nash. She fell in love with the area and established her forever home here in the late 70s. Renowned in the area, she helped to establish the Dorrigo Theatrical Society and ran consecutive productions of Shakespeare for all to enjoy. The conservation area was created in memory of her father, whilst her friendship with satirical SMH cartoonist, George Molnar OBE, is delightfully recorded with his frescos throughout the property.

How has the property evolved over time? The immense historical investment in

DORRIGO PLATEAU
All the hard work has been done and the result presented by the vendors is exceptional. e renovations are to an extremely high standard and will appeal to a multitude of demographics.

landscaping, associated plantings and subsequent nurturing is being repaid manyfold with the array of now mature ferns, local waratahs and myrtle; native orchids, proteas and elkhorns to name a few. The estate infrastructure is modernised to include extensive solar power and batteries. An abundant water supply, a bore, multiple tankage and associated pumping systems irrigate the property. The estate is a fully connected space with 5G reception and fast WIFI internet connectivity in each room across the estate facilitating remote working. A helicopter landing area makes Coffs airport and international connections just 15 minutes away.

What are some of the standout design elements or features within the home?

The main homestead is grand. With its 70s qualities of high ceilings, double brick walls, local wood doors, windows and floors preserved, unique frescoes decorate the main entrance. It’s luxurious, but liveable and homely.

Are there any unique selling points that potential buyers should know about? Simply its location, the setting and the grandeur of the modernised homestead.

With the flexibility of having three self-contained cabins - 5 bedrooms, 3 bathrooms, lounges, decks but with their own privacy, and also a fully renovated caretaker’s/country cottage at the gateway to the property.

or further income.

Have there been any recent updates or renovations made to the property? Nothing has been spared in renovating the property. A mix of country and contemporary, splendidly appointed, but with grand features thoughtfully preserved. All new bathrooms and ensuites, a chic media room, private terraces, decks and firepits. A new pizza oven patio now overlooks the 15m saltwater pool and a self-contained studio/4th bedroom with ensuite and private terrace.

How might these enhancements affect the property’s value? All the hard work has been done and the result presented by the vendors is exceptional. The renovations are to an extremely high standard and will appeal to a multitude of demographics.

How do you plan to showcase this property to potential buyers? As per our targeted marketing plan, that will include high end websites, social media, luxury property editorials, and targeting specific areas such as Northern Beaches/Eastern suburbs in Sydney, Byron Bay and surrounds. Also included will be the other major capital cities and exposure to the international market via luxuryrealestate.com and other international sites.

Are there any upcoming open houses or

virtual tours scheduled? Due to the high price point and the unique location, we are only doing private inspections and virtual tours.

What challenges do you anticipate in selling this property? Due to its outstanding location and price point the target audience is very specific. A very limited buyer pool for such a unique property.

How do you address concerns or objections from potential buyers? Being so unique targeted to a specific audience. We would ask what concerns or objections they do have and then provide feedback accordingly.

What do you think the future holds for this property in terms of value and market demand? We don’t feel that this property would lose any value due to its distinctiveness.

Are there any upcoming developments in the area that might benefit this property? The $60 million Dorrigo Rainforest Centre development currently underway is anticipated to attract annually 200,000 visitors. With limited accommodation available locally, high-end facilities will likely attract a significant premium which represents a considerable opportunity for Mount Christopherson Estate should the owners so wish. The town of Dorrigo is thriving, with many local retailers – butcher, baker, grocers, patisserie, delicatessen cafes – offering authentic produce from the region.

AFROM BEYOND THE SURFACE COUNSELLING with JULIE THOMAS

s we enter the New Year, it is a great time to focus on our mental well-being. The benefits of good mental health foster better communication and stronger relationships and enhances focus, creativity and productivity. Mental health is closely linked to physical health, reducing the risk of chronic diseases. Overall happiness and life satisfaction are significantly improved with good mental health.

Here are some top tips to help you start the year with a positive mindset and maintain your mental health throughout the year, along with the benefits of good mental health.

Set Realistic Goals: Break down your goals into manageable steps. Setting small, achievable goals may help you stay motivated and reduce stress. Write down your goals and track your progress regularly. The benefits of achieving goals boost self-esteem and provide a sense of accomplishment, which can enhance overall happiness.

Practice Mindfulness: Incorporate mindfulness practices such as meditation, deep breathing, yoga, or Tai Chi into your daily routine. These practices can help reduce anxiety and improve your overall mental health. Try 5-10 minutes each day of mindfulness exercises. Mindfulness can improve focus, reduce stress, and increase emotional regulation, leading to better mental clarity and peace.

Stay Connected: Maintain strong social

NEW YEAR es INTO THE

connections with family and friends. Social support is crucial for mental well-being. Schedule regular catch-ups with loved ones, whether in person or virtually. The benefits of strong social connections can reduce feelings of loneliness and provide emotional support, which is essential for mental resilience.

Prioritise Self-Care: Make time for activities that you enjoy and that help you relax. Self-care is essential for maintaining mental health. Create a self-care routine that includes activities like reading, taking baths, or engaging in hobbies. Regular self-care can reduce stress, improve mood, and increase overall life satisfaction.

Exercise Regularly: Physical activity is not only good for your body but also for your mind. Exercise may help reduce symptoms of depression and anxiety. Aim for at least 30 minutes of moderate exercise most days of the week. Exercise releases endorphins, which are natural mood lifters, and may improve sleep, reduce stress, and boost self-esteem.

Get Enough Sleep: Quality sleep is vital for mental health. Establish a regular sleep schedule and create a restful environment. Avoid screens before bedtime and practice a calming bedtime routine. Adequate sleep improves cognitive function, emotional regulation, and overall mental health.

Seek Professional Help When Needed: If you are struggling with your mental health, do not hesitate to seek help from a professional. Professional help can provide personalised

strategies and support, leading to better management of mental health conditions and improved quality of life.

Limit Screen Time: Excessive screen time, especially on social media, can negatively impact mental health. Set boundaries for your screen use. Designate screen-free times during your day, such as during meals or before bed. Reducing screen time may decrease anxiety, improve sleep quality, and enhance real-life social interactions. Practice Gratitude: Focusing on what you are grateful for can improve your mood and overall outlook on life. Keep a journal and write down three things you are thankful for each day. Practising gratitude can increase positive emotions, reduce stress, and improve overall mental well-being.

Stay Hydrated and Eat Well: Proper nutrition and hydration are essential for mental health. A balanced diet can improve your mood and energy levels. Drink plenty of water and eat a variety of nutritious foods. Good nutrition supports brain function, reduces the risk of mental health disorders, and enhances overall energy and mood.

Our minds and bodies are not separate. What affects one, affects the other. Tiny steps forward daily is PROGRESS.

Amanda Allen has an incredible story of resilience and strength. SHE STARTED CROSSFIT AT 40, MADE IT TO NATIONALS MULTIPLE TIMES, AND IS NOW GETTING BACK TO PEAK FITNESS AT 54 AFTER A TOTAL HIP REPLACEMENT, and that’s only part of her story. She’s an advocate for both physical and mental health, and shares her experiences to inspire and give hope to others.

i Amanda. How did you first get into Crossfit and what drew you to this type of fitness training? I accidentally found CrossFit at a pivotal time in my mental and physical health journey. I was 5 years sober, struggling to manage my depression, recently recovered from major surgery and I was passionately training to qualify for the 2012 London Olympics in High Kneeling Canoeing (I would have been the first Australian woman to compete). I began receiving personal training at a CrossFit gym, the sole aim being to improve my specific strength and conditioning for C]canoeing. However, my Olympic dreams fell short by one placement at Nationals, and it was at this time that the CrossFit Open began (a qualifying event for the CrossFit Games). I signed up because I figured that I would be working out anyway, so why not. I was extremely fit, not particularly

strong or skilled in weightlifting and gymnastics, but I have an ability to push myself into and beyond pain. That is one of my superpowers. My first foray into the CrossFit world, at the age of 40 years, saw me advance to Nationals and then to the 2011 CrossFit Games as an individual female athlete competing against 20 and 30 something year olds. I came 19th at those Games, the oldest individual female competitor ever! I was enamoured, hooked and addicted! My experience of those games was one of the peak experiences of my life and I wanted more! CrossFit became my way of life for the next 10 years. I have never known such a stimulating fitness methodology, there is almost nothing we don’t do. We practice and train major lifts: deadlift, clean, squat, presses, clean and jerk, and snatch. Similarly we master the basics of gymnastics: pull-ups, dips, rope climb, push-ups, sit-ups, presses to handstand, pirouettes, flips, splits, and holds. We also bike, run, swim, row etc, hard and fast 5-6 days per week. It is eminently scalable making it suitable for your Grandma (my 77 year old Mum just started) or high level athletes from other sports looking to take their athleticism to the next level. The community spirit is so strong and touching, and so needed in this day and age!

Can you share a bit about your Crossfit career and some of your achievements in the sport?

I began Crossfit at 40, and have competed at 6 CF Games. My first as an individual at 41, and then I went on to dominate the masters field, winning 3 gold and 1 bronze. I competed at Nationals 5 times, until I was 46 years old. I was always top 5 and the one to watch and beat. I gave the young Australian girls a good nudge every single year!

You have had to take a break from Crossfit over the past few years due to some big health issues and surgeries, could you share a bit about your health journey?

The last 5-6 years of my life have been extremely challenging. I had emergency surgery to remove 4kgs of (luckily) benign tumours from my torso in 2018 and in 2019 I fled an abusive relationship (DV) and hid in my van with my wolfhounds Ishka and Lobo. I was a broken woman, suicidal and fearful, and then found myself homeless for 5 months when COVID lockdowns hit. I was literally hiding from my ex and from the world in my van on the streets. It was a dark time. I couldn’t find support or a place to live. During that time I got creative and designed my functional food and health-product range that has been my life’s work.

Then one day my hip became extremely painful after a short bike ride that began a 3 year journey with chronic, debilitating constant hip pain. My ability to move was extremely limited. But I did what I could with banded workouts in nature, to stay strong and stable despite the pain. It helped my mental health and gave my wolfhounds time to play outdoors. In 2023 I had a total hip replacement and that has given me my whole life back - including CrossFit. What have been some of the lessons you have taken away from the big ups and downs you have faced in your life?

experience was like and what your goals were?

In June 2016 I ran 1000kms to raise awareness for Suicide and Mental Illness. I had struggled my whole life and just wanted to give hope and a platform for conversations back to those still suffering. Each day different people joined me to share in the run, I spoke at schools and to community groups from Toowoomba to Mackay (areas with the highest rates of suicide in the country). It was a powerful experience!

I want people to know that the human spirit can endure and rise from virtually anything. We are made stronger by our struggles, it’s all a matter of choices, perspective and perseverance.

I have learned to keep turning up; to believe in impossible things; to find a way no matter the evidence against me; that no one is going to do it for me; to be of service to others; to focus on living my best life; and that faith in God will hold me through it all.

You are a big advocate for looking after your mental health as well as your physical health and you actually took on a running challenge to raise awareness. Can you share a bit about what that

You are quite an inspiration to those that know you, why is it important to you to share your story and encourage others who are facing hardship?

There was no one there for me during my struggles. I don’t want people to feel alone, I want to offer hope by openly sharing my experiences and strength. I learned that I wasn’t a bad person, just a sick person in need of support and healing. I want people to know that the human spirit can endure and rise from virtually anything. We are made stronger by our struggles, it’s all a matter of choices, perspective and perseverance. I am proof of that! What is next for you? Where would you like to see the next few years take you?

I have such a passion to be of service. To help to heal the heart and health of humanity by the power of food, movement, prayer and story as medicine! I am delivering workshops and sharing my story and inspiration with groups around Australia, helping people get well with my health formulas and health coaching, and training up a CrossFit storm, proving that age is just an attitude and miracles do happen.

Thanks Amanda.

What Does a Lifeline Crisis Support Volunteer Do?

Crisis Support Volunteers play a critical role in keeping callers safe, providing emotional support, and assisting individuals in distress. Each call is an opportunity to create a safe space where help seekers feel heard and understood.

A Crisis Supporter will:

• Respond to people in need of support over the phone.

• Listen empathetically to callers as they share their challenges, which may include feelings of loneliness, disconnection, or overwhelming stress.

• Assess the help seeker’s situation, including their suicidal risk, and intervene appropriately.

By addressing complex emotions and fostering hope, these volunteers empower callers to take positive steps towards healing. Why Do People Volunteer to Become Crisis Supporters?

By addressing complex emotions and fostering hope, these volunteers empower callers to take positive steps toward healing.

• Work collaboratively to create immediate safety plans and provide pathways to additional care and support when necessary.

• Offer hope, reassurance, and a sense of connection during the caller’s most difficult moments.

Volunteering as a Crisis Supporter is both a rewarding and transformative experience. People from diverse backgrounds, communities, and cultures, ranging from 18 years old to retirees, join our team, united by a desire to make a difference.

Volunteers often express how fulfilling it is to connect with others, offer hope, and contribute to their communities. They develop valuable skills, such as active

listening, emotional resilience, and crisis management, which enhances their personal and professional lives. Many also form lasting friendships with fellow supporters, becoming part of a close-knit, supportive community.

What Qualities Make a Great Crisis Support Volunteer?

Successful Crisis Supporters share key traits:

• Empathy: They understand and connect with the feelings of others.

• Compassion: They provide kindness and care without judgment.

Program Manager of the Endometriosis and Pelvic Pain Clinic at Coffs Harbour Women’s Health Centre + Pelvic Health Physiotherapist

What is the Endometriosis and Pelvic Pain (EPP) Clinic:

In 2023, the Federal Government announced funding for endometriosis and pelvic pain clinics in every state and territory in Australia, with the aim to create new care pathways and improve access to care for these chronic conditions out of hospital environments. Endometriosis and other pelvic pain conditions can be debilitating and complex, and we know that women have had to outlay a lot of their time and money to seek help. In Australia, endometriosis affects at least one in nine girls, women and those assigned female at birth – and we suspect that number is an under-estimation. Women often experience pain (such as with their periods or when they are ovulating), but can have other symptoms as well, such as changes with bladder, bowel or sexual health. These clinics have been established as a place for women to seek care from a range of health professionals who have additional training and a professional interest in investigating and managing these conditions.

My role in the EPP Clinic: I am excited to have started my role as the Program Manager of

the EPP clinic in Coffs Harbour. I have recently moved from Darwin, where I helped set up the Northern Territory’s only EPP clinic, so I am eager to be channelling what I learned through that journey into my new role here in Coffs Harbour. My position involves overseeing the clinic as a whole. I collaborate with patients and healthcare providers to ensure that everyone accessing the services for endometriosis and pelvic pain has a great experience and feels supported.

Tell us about the Endometriosis and Pelvic Pain Education Day:

We hosted a wonderful, sold-out education day in 2024, so we are thrilled to be hosting another in 2025. We want to deliver a day of learning and sharing common experiences of pelvic pain and enable people to hear tips from experts about these conditions and what can help. We have been working on a program that delivers this, but is a change-up from last year’s education day. If you have endometriosis or pelvic pain, if you know someone who does, or if you have any interest in learning more – please join us! Release of our program and ticket sales will go live in January, so follow us on social media to stay in the loop.

Aged care fee changes. What

you need to know
A er a long wait, new legislation which is aimed at reshaping how aged care is delivered and funded in Australia has been passed.

Who is affected?

The rights in the Aged Care Act apply to everyone, but the new rules for fees will only apply if you move into residential care after 30 June 2025 or are approved for Home Care after 12 September 2024.

If you were receiving a Home Care Package as at 12 September 2024 (or had been approved and in the queue waiting for a package to be allocated), grandfathering rules apply. The aim is to ensure you are not disadvantaged by some of the rule changes. What is changing for residential care?

Some room prices may increase but we still expect to see a range of price points. And you will still be able to choose to pay for your room as a lump sum or as daily “rent”. If you pay a lump sum, each year the provider must deduct and keep 2%. This only applies for the first five years – so you could lose up to 10% of the amount paid,

with the remainder refundable to you or your estate. If paying the daily rent, this increases each six months in line with inflation.

Ongoing care costs will be split between you and the government, with three new fee categories to work out this split:

• Everyday living expenses – currently $63.57 (indexed) per day, but if you have assets over $238,000 or income above $95,400 (or a combination) you may pay up to an additional $12.55 per day.

• Non-clinical care – this is a means-tested fee up to $101.16 per day. It will only apply for the first four years, or up to a dollar cap of $130,000 (indexed).

• Clinical care – this is the most expensive component and will be fully paid by the Government.

What is changing for home care?

The Support at Home program starts on 1 July 2025, expanding care to eight levels instead of just four. Similar to residential care, the costs will be split into three

categories and means-tested to work out how much you pay.

What you need to do?

Navigating these changes can be complex and ensuring you have kept enough money to meet your care needs in the later years of life is vital to maximise your quality of life. If you or a loved one require aged care, acting before 1 July 2025 may help you lock in current fee arrangements. But whenever you decide care is needed, it is important to get comprehensive financial advice to fully understand your options and how to restructure your assets and investments.

As an Accredited Aged Care ProfessionalTM, I can help you get started and remove some of the stress and worry from future care needs.

This advice is general in nature and everyone’s circumstances are different. So it’s important to speak to someone like myself who is a licenced financial adviser (I am an Authorised Representative of Count Financial Limited AFSL 227232).

Making Lives Better:

Agnes Reifler’s story is one of resilience, compassion, and a dedication to helping others. Her journey, from a child born amid civil war, to a Registered Nurse and owner of Nurse Next Door Home Care Services in Coffs Harbour, embodies her belief that every life is worth protecting, nurturing, and celebrating.

“I’ve always known I wanted to help people,” Agnes reflects. “From the day my mother told me the story of my birth, I knew I had a calling. Nursing was never just a job—it’s my way of giving back and making sure others don’t face their struggles alone.”

A Journey Defined by Resilience and Purpose

The Story Behind Nurse Next Door Coffs Harbour

Agnes’ family fled Liberia when her mother was pregnant with her. After an arduous escape through war-torn regions, Agnes was born in the bush in Sierra Leone, assisted by a nurse who had never delivered a baby before. This profound experience shaped Agnes’ life. From the age of eight, after hearing her birth story from her mother, she knew she wanted to become a nurse and help others.

knew I wanted to be a nurse.”

Agnes’ family fled Liberia when her mother was pregnant with her. After an arduous escape through war-torn regions.

“That selflessness and courage stayed with me,” she says. “From that moment, I

Her path led her to Australia at 15, where she pursued her dream through hard work and perseverance. Agnes completed a traineeship in community services and aged care while in high school, gaining her first hands-on experience in nursing homes. She earned her nursing degree, specialising in cardiac care, oncology, and intensive care. But her heart was in community nursing, where she felt she could make the most meaningful impact.

Building a Business with Heart

While working in hospitals, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic, Agnes noticed that many elderly and vulnerable patients were discharged prematurely, often with little support at home. Witnessing this gap in care inspired her to start her own small community nursing business.

Her career brought her to Coffs Harbour, a place she considers home. After years working in Brisbane in oncology and cardiac care, she returned to her roots, drawn by her deep connection to the local community. Launching Nurse Next Door Home Care Services in Coffs Harbour was a natural next step, perfectly aligning with her mission of providing compassionate, community-driven care.

Making Lives Better

“With a core purpose of Making Lives Better, Nurse Next Door Home Care Services enables clients to live independently, safely, and happily in their own homes, on their own terms. From personalised care plans to matching clients with compatible caregivers, every detail is meticulously considered. Agnes’ team works to create WOW Customer Experiences, ensuring each client feels valued, respected, and supported. This approach extends to Aged Care, NDIS Disability Support and postoperative care, ensuring comprehensive care for people of all ages and abilities in the community.

Her efforts impact not only her clients but also the community. Families have peace of mind knowing their loved ones are receiving attentive, high-quality care. Agnes captures her purpose in a simple message: “It’s about more than just health; it’s truly about Making Lives Better. I want my clients to know they’re cared for, they’re valued,

and they’re not alone.”

“We ask a simple question: ‘What did you used to love doing that you no longer do?’” says Agnes. From gardening to painting or family outings, the goal is to reconnect clients with their passions. This holistic approach nurtures emotional well-being and encourages positivity and purpose in clients’ lives.

This philosophy has personal meaning for Agnes. From ages 13 to 15, she cared for her grandmother, a formative experience that shaped her approach to elder care. “I learned that providing care is about being present, listening, and ensuring people feel valued and connected.”

GovernmentApproved Home Care Package Provider

Families gain peace of mind knowing that their loved ones are not just receiving care, but thriving with support that respects their individuality and autonomy.

Nurse Next Door Home Care Service is now proud to be a Government-Approved Home Care Package Provider. This milestone enables recipients to access flexible funding for essential home care services through the Home Care Package (HCP) program, empowering individuals aged 65 and over to maintain their independence, dignity, and quality of life in the comfort of their homes.

Unlike many providers, Nurse Next Door Home Care Services prioritises care over

administrative expenses. With a capped 10% all-inclusive package management fee until 30/06/2025, and no care management, setup, or exit fees, clients can trust that their funding goes directly towards enhancing their wellbeing.

Serving the Coffs Harbour Community

Nurse Next Door Home Care Services serves Coffs Harbour and extends to Kempsey, Halfway Creeks, and surrounding communities. Available 24/7, 365 days a year, they offer flexibility and accessibility for families needing care for loved ones. Agnes’ deep commitment to Coffs Harbour comes from her own life experiences and the support she received growing up. “This is where it all started,” she says. “I wanted to come back to Coffs Harbour to give back to the community that supported me. If I’m going to look after my people here, I want to do it the right way.”

Dom White

COFFS COAST SUICIDE PREVENTION INITIATIVE

The Coffs Coast Suicide Prevention Initiative is doing vital work in our community. Wesley LifeForce has been supporting community-based suicide prevention networks around Australia for over 20 years, so when the community approached the Coffs Wesley team, it wasn’t long before a network was in place. We spoke to outgoing Chair/Coordinator Dom White about the initiative.

Suicide impacts a significant portion of the population. What does your team find are the biggest barriers to discussing mental health and suicide prevention?

For people living with their own suicidal thoughts it is often very difficult to put up their hand and say ‘this is what’s going on for me and I need help’. When we feel like that, we lose touch with our rational problem-solving skills, and so we know that loss of capacity really impacts people getting help. For people who are trying to support someone they’re worried about, it can be a terrifying experience. Yet, being equipped with skills in how to support someone in this situation is really not spoken about in our society. Often people are scared that if they talk about the topic it will increase its prevalence.

For people who have lost someone, it is such

a horribly isolating experience, because there is definitely still so much misunderstanding in the community around someone taking their own life, and it impacts people sharing about their losses.

Research demonstrates that when we speak about the topic of suicide in a safe, appropriate way using appropriate terminology, it does not lead to increased incidence. It actually empowers a community to look for strategies and solutions to prevent it, and it may also positively impact the experience of bereavement.

The free one-day Suicide Prevention Training sessions offered by Wesley LifeForce sound like a fantastic resource. Can you share what these sessions involve and how they benefit participants? The training is designed to give people the skills, knowledge and confidence to support people at risk of suicide in their community or

workplace. It aims to educate people about suicide, to challenge attitudes and teaches basic engagement and suicide intervention skills. The training really does equip someone with the tools to help save a life.

Fluro Friday at the Coffs Jetty has become a popular weekly event. How did this initiative start, and what kind of impact have you seen it have on participants?

Fluro Friday is part of the OneWave movement for mental health awareness, which started about 11 years ago at Bondi Beach. A young man had been really suffering with his mental health and always found surfing was really helpful to his state of mind. One morning he threw on a fluro suit and jumped on his board and spent some time out in the surf. When he was coming in, someone jokingly said ‘are you just coming home from a night out or something’, and he was really honest, and said ‘I’m really struggling but I wanted to

try to cheer myself up so I’ve put on this fluro gear and come for a surf…’ and from that conversation, Fluro Friday began.

OneWave Fluro Friday is now all around Australia and overseas. The gang at Woolgoolga have been hosting Fluro Friday for about nine years now, and we thought it was time we gave the people of Coffs a chance to have their very own!

We’ve been meeting at Coffs Jetty since March, and we’ve turned up at 6.30am every single Friday, rain, hail or shine!

For people who come along they feel it’s a safe space to check-in about how they’re going. We’re not counselors. We’re just ordinary people, creating that space for connection.

After our check-in we jump in for a swim, or go for a walk, or sometimes we have a person leading us in yoga or tai chi… and we always finish with a coffee and a yarn. Your network collaborates with a wide range of services, including Lifeline North Coast, HeadSpace, and Mission Australia. What has come from these partnerships? People from these organisations actually came along to our first meetings, and to this day, are so supportive of us. As a community group, it’s difficult for us to host our own public awareness-raising events, but our collaborations mean we can have a public presence alongside actual mental health and suicide prevention services. It means we can have conversations with people about wellbeing and mental health, we can invite people to come along to Fluro Friday, and also let them know about the Suicide Prevention Training which may be coming up in their area. Many people in your group have lived experience with suicide or its effects. How does this personal connection shape the work you do and the support you offer? When you have experienced thoughts of suicidality or lost someone who took their own life, you are able to meet people on a much more personal level and have real conversations with them - if that’s what they choose.

Importantly, those of us with lived experience in the network have also done a range of training that gives us a safe way to relate to people – without traumatising ourselves or the people we meet.

You are currently encouraging people who are interested to take on volunteer roles within the network. What kinds of skills or experiences are you looking for in new volunteers, and how can they get involved?

Specifically, we are looking to fill our 2025 Committee roles, which include: Chair and or Co Chair (chair meetings and event planning); Secretary (notetaking and meeting planning); Social media management, and support person for event planning. No matter what a person’s skills level is, there is a way for people to contribute, and as the networks are part of a national consortium there is always someone to guide you.

For someone who may be struggling with thoughts of suicide or knows someone who is, what steps can they take to seek help or support through your network or partner organisations?

If someone is struggling with thoughts, I strongly encourage phoning LifeLine 13 11 14 or texting LifeLine on 0477 13 11 14. If someone is in imminent danger of hurting themselves or taking their life phone 000. In my experience, it is never too soon to get help. If a young person is reading this then tell an adult what’s going on, or ring a phone line like Kids Help Line 1800 55 1800. If it’s an adult, please pick up the phone. You will never regret asking for help. Even if a friend or family

member gets angry at you when they are unwell, you may be helping save their life. There are some other excellent support lines as well, including:

As a school principal, one of the most rewarding aspects of my role is welcoming new students and their families into our school community. Each year, we see hundreds of bright faces walking through our gates for the first time, filled with a mix of excitement and nervousness. Today, I’d like to share some guidance to help make this transition as smooth as possible for both parents and students.

Supporting Your Child’s Transition

The move to a new school is a significant milestone in your child’s life. As parents, you play a crucial role in shaping how your child approaches this change. Your attitude and support can make all the difference in helping them adapt to their new environment.

Before the First Day

Start preparing well before the first day of school. Take time to visit the campus with your child during orientation sessions. Familiarise yourselves with the layout, locate key areas like the office, canteen, and bathrooms. This simple step can significantly reduce first-day anxiety.

Consider doing a practice run of the school routine. Whether your child will be walking,

taking the bus, or being driven, rehearsing the journey helps establish a sense of control and familiarity. If they’re taking public transport, ensure they know their bus numbers and stops. The school will have a bus timetable guru who will know all the routes and times.

Creating a Strong Foundation

Set up a dedicated study space at home before school begins. This doesn’t need to be elaborate – a quiet corner with good lighting and necessary supplies will suffice. Help your child organise their materials and establish a routine for homework and studying.

Encourage participation in school activities from the start. Sports teams, clubs, bands and other extracurricular activities provide excellent opportunities for your child to meet peers with similar interests. These connections often form the foundation of lasting friendships.

Managing the Emotional Journey

It’s natural for both parents and children to feel anxious about starting at a new school. Here are some strategies to help manage these emotions:

1. Maintain open communication with your child about their feelings

2. Focus on the positive aspects of the change

3. Share your own experiences of starting

Education Update

STARTING A NEW SCHOOL: A PRINCIPAL’S GUIDE FOR PARENTS

something new

4. Connect with other families in the school community

Building School-Home Partnership

Remember that we’re partners in your child’s education journey. Our staff are here to support both you and your child. Don’t hesitate to contact teachers, counsellors, or the administration with questions or concerns. Consider getting involved in the school community yourself. Join the Parents and Friends Association, volunteer for school events, coach or manage a sports team or help out in the classroom as a reader. Your involvement sends a powerful message to your child about the value of education and community.

Final Thoughts

Starting a new school is a significant transition but also an opportunity for growth and new beginnings. Your child can thrive in their new environment with proper preparation and support. Remember, every student in our school was once “the new kid,” and our community takes pride in welcoming new families.

Our door is always open for questions and support. Together, we can make this transition a positive experience for your child.

Dr Dexter Dela Cruz smiles as he shares the unlikely story of a marine science career that began in teeming inner-city Manila, 100km from the nearest coral reef. Unlikelier still, the catalyst was a TV cartoon.

Growing up in the Philippines, I loved a Japanese cartoon called Tico and Friends,” says Dexter. A girl, Nanami, and her marine biologist father sailed the world in search of a magical whale. Nanami also had an unbreakable bond with a young female orca named Tico.

Fortuitously, Nanami and her Dad eventually found the whale in waters off Australia, where Dexter has spent a good part of his 20-year scientific career tackling the challenge of coral reef restoration. Furthermore, the impact of his initial PhD research and subsequent work as part of the Southern Cross University Coral Larval Restoration team has culminated in Dexter being named the University’s 2024 International Alumnus of the Year.

Dexter came to Southern Cross University as a recipient of an Australian Centre for International Agricultural Research (ACIAR) John Allwright Fellowship and completed his

PhD in 2019 supervised by Southern Cross University’s Distinguished Professor Peter Harrison. Dexter is now project coordinator for ACIAR’s $2.5 million coral restoration project in the Philippines, led by Professor Harrison.

Among techniques to restore marine ecosystems, Dexter’s pioneering work in Larval Enhancement Method (LEM) is internationally recognised – and the benefits extend beyond the environment.

Reef systems have huge ecological and economic value, yet they are compromised through factors like destructive fishing and overfishing, land misuse, and coral bleaching due to climate change.

“For example, Australia and the Philippines both have large coral reef systems,” he says. “The Philippines alone has more than 7000 islands and people are hugely dependent on the reefs for their livelihoods.

“Reef systems have huge ecological and economic value, yet they are compromised through factors like destructive fishing and overfishing, land misuse, and coral bleaching due to climate change.

“LEM involves the collection of coral sperm and eggs after spawning in the reef. We can collect tens of millions of larvae and use them to restock and restore degraded but recoverable reef areas.”

Dexter’s LEM experiments during his PhD studies were the first to successfully settle coral larvae directly onto badly degraded reefs to restore breeding corals within a few years. Achieved at a lower cost than other restoration approaches, results also refuted claims that

LEM was too expensive and thus unviable.

Dexter is now a postdoctoral researcher in the Southern Cross University research team that is developing larger-scale coral larval restoration methods that are being applied on the Great Barrier Reef, supported by research projects funded through the Australian Government and philanthropic organisations. The technique is also at the heart of plans between the Philippines and Southern Cross University to make the Philippines a training centre for reef restoration in South-East Asia.

As Dexter’s reputation continues to ascend –including being named the Australia Awards 2023 Alumnus of the Year through the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade – he remains grounded. The child who thrilled to a TV cartoon about the sea remains present … and prescient.

“The first time I went diving on a coral reef, I saw a magnificent blue starfish and yelled with excitement – hardly the wisest thing to do underwater,” he says.

“It convinced me even more of what I wanted

to do with my life. I hope I never lose that sense of wonder, which is why being named International Alumnus of the Year is so overwhelming.

e
first time I went diving on a coral reef, I saw a magnificent blue starfish and yelled with excitement – hardly the wisest thing to do underwater...

“This award reminds me to work ever harder for the welfare of coral reefs and the people who rely heavily on them.”

Dexter is just one of the many marine scientists creating positive change at Southern Cross University. The National Marine Science Centre (NMSC), located at Charlesworth Bay in Coffs Harbour, is the University’s flagship facility for marine science research and education. The Centre is adjacent to the Solitary Islands Marine Park, a unique environment for studying marine science due to its location at the intersection of warm-water and coldwater currents. an you tell us about your business?

My daughter and I started our coffee business in the middle of adversity. I was struggling with crippling anxiety and my daughter was leaving the nest. It was at this time that my Mum and Dad bought me a coffee van. Everyone that knew me believed I wouldn’t last long with many people telling me they thought I would quit.

But once I started my business I realised how important my role was to the community. Customers would not just come to me for a coffee, they would come for a chat and there would be many who would depend on our conversations.

My customers might have first come for the coffee but now they come for the conversations too. As well as the connection we make over a cup of coffee, there is something magical about it. It feels like I’m meant to be there for the community. Now six years on, I’m still loving my business and loving being there for the community. I believe we have helped a lot of people and that’s a nice motivating feeling to have.

What’s your favourite part of the work you do?

My favourite part of the job is definitely the people. Listening to others. Even though I do a lot of talking, believe it or not, I listen as well. I like to offer compassion and a genuine authentic chat. My customers mean everything to me.

Who is your greatest influence in business?

Patsy Cline. She isn’t a regular business woman as she is an entertainer, but I’ve always loved Patsy as she is so authentic and doesn’t give up even though she has had some obstacles.  There are plenty of lessons to learn from her. She collaborated with quality businesses in the recording industry. She likes to be an individual and was always genuine. She also connected deeply with her audience. Sometimes I feel like we are on stage and the customers are our audience!

My customers might have first come for the co ee but now they come for the conversations too. As well as the connection we make over a cup of co ee there is something magical about it.

now and there have been times I have wanted to move but the people here are what keeps me wanting to stay working in Coffs. My customers are more then customers to me now, they have become family  What piece of advice would you give women making their way in the business world?

Always be open to opportunities. Look for them everywhere. Also you create your world! If you want something, believe in it and make it happen. Believe in yourself.

How can people learn more about your business?

What do you love about living and working on the Coffs Coast?

I love living and working in Coffs because of the community. My daughter lives in Brisbane

We have a Facebook page and an Instagram page farmstead.inthevalley but the best way to get to know about our business is to come on down. Come and meet us and introduce yourself. My van is located next to Watsons Caravans on North Boambee Road, North Boambee Valley.

Thanks Sammy.

STATE OF PLAY

with COFFS HARBOUR MP GURMESH SINGH

As 2025 begins and opportunities beckon in the year ahead, I’m reminded of just how swiftly time marches on.

It feels like only yesterday we were casting our votes in the 2019 State election.

Yet here we are, six years later, reflecting on a period which has dramatically reshaped our world.

In what feels like the blink of an eye, we’ve been confronted with events of immense magnitude that have tested our resilience and redefined our collective experience.

We faced the devastating fires of 2019 and 2020, which ravaged our landscapes and communities. Before we could fully recover, a global pandemic swept across the world, altering the very fabric of our daily lives. As we grappled with lockdowns and a health crisis, floods came crashing through, adding yet another layer of hardship.

Now, as we emerge from those challenges, we’re met with soaring inflation and a rising cost of living - issues that weigh heavily on households everywhere.

Amid these trials, we’ve also witnessed the strength and resilience of our communities.

Time has marched on - quicker than we would like, and many projects on the Coffs Coast have moved along quite considerably since 2019. The biggest is the Coffs Harbour Bypass.

2025 l king forward

In 2019 the big debate was whether we would get tunnels or cuttings.

I’m proud to say that I was able to advocate and secure funding for the tunnel construction on the bypass. The project moved through the preliminary stages, and continues to move forward in huge leaps. So much so, the bypass is on track to open to traffic at the end of 2026, with full completion of the project by 2027.

With a bumper holiday season in full swing and the traffic that comes with it, we cannot wait to get the congestion out of our city.

Alongside the bypass, the Pacific Bay Film Studio project is another gamechanger.

I’ve facilitated productive meetings with Transport for NSW and various Ministers in the State Government to ensure the studios are able to proceed.

Those two projects are the two biggest infrastructure projects in our city’s history.

Not only are they happening at the same time, but they also share a boundary.

We need Transport and the State Government to commit to building a noise wall between the two projects, not only to allow the studios to continue to proceed full steam ahead but to also replicate the natural forest wall, which used to provide a noise and amenity barrier but has since been removed for the road construction.

Also in 2019, the State Government recommenced a project to revitalise the Coffs Harbour Jetty Precinct.

A generation of people have witnessed what should be a vibrant waterfront precinct languish in weeds, dust and vast unusable areas.

Collaboration and working across all levels of government is the only way to deliver outcomes our community wants and deserves.

Most people want a jetty precinct that meets the needs of residents and enhances our region’s appeal to visitors.

In my lifetime, I have seen the industrial sheds disappear, leaving behind an amazing opportunity to create something for the next generation.

I will continue to call on the Minns Labor Government, which is both the landowner and rezoning authority for the revitalisation project, to prioritise tourism accommodation over other types of accommodation in the jetty precinct. That sentiment is also shared by City of Coffs Harbour Council.

The community will, of course, continue to have input into the project as it progresses.

But our community cannot afford to kick this project down the road any longer.

There is so much happening in our community every day. I am grateful to live where I live and to represent the people of the Coffs Harbour Electorate in the NSW Parliament.

As we reflect on the past six years, there is so much to look forward to in the years ahead. There is much to be done, but only so much time.

Jason de Groot and the team from JDG Constructions a ended the 2024 State HIA NSW awards in Darling Harbour, in November and were thrilled to win Best Custom Home ($2.5m - $4m category) for their Sandy Beach Project. We had a chat with Jason to find out what makes this project an award winning home and who made up the legendary team behind the design and build.

JASON DE GROOT

Hi Jason, please share the story behind your journey in the building industry and what led you to become an award-winning builder?

After leaving school I spent a few years in the construction industry gaining experience before securing a carpentry apprenticeship. I was signed off after my 3rd year and went straight into the deep end and started JDG Constructions. I had to learn a lot on the run, particularly the business side of things, and I also had to identify quite quickly where I

wanted to position myself in the industry. I decided that high end custom built homes gave me the challenge I was looking for.

Congratulations Jason, tell us how it feels to be a state recognised award winning builder

Being an award-winning builder makes me very proud, it reflects years of hard work and dedication, and a commitment to quality workmanship. There is satisfaction in knowing your work stands out from the rest and sets the standard. The accolades bring confidence, but also inspires a drive for me to continue to improve.

Tell us about the property and what makes it unique..

The property is set on an acreage block at Sandy Beach. One unique aspect is the slope

of the site which is almost 45 degrees, Definitely a challenge to build on!! The house design itself is quite beautiful with the site retained and the house built into the landscape, not on poles which is the usual design for such a slope. The most breathtaking feature is the helical staircase centrepiece which was fully custom-designed and built by local trades.

Who was involved in the build, design and construction?

G2 Architects provided the design; The Design Cupboard provided the interior design, and my clients Rob and Antony also provided their touch of flair to the final finishings and landscaping.

All the trades were local which demonstrates the quality of workmanship the Mid North Coast has to offer.

What philosophy do you have when it comes to choosing your suppliers and subcontractors?

I always try to use local wherever possible; it supports the local economy and supports small business in the area. I prioritise businesses that align with my commitment to quality workmanship, maintain strong communication and share the same integrity values as our business which is essential to achieve successful project outcomes. Continued over...

How do you establish and maintain relationships with your suppliers and subcontractors?

If it’s a new trade or supplier I will always call and discuss potential collaboration to make sure all our values align before engaging on a project. In order to maintain existing relationships, I try to be respectful to all involved and keep open discussions to make sure we are all still on the same page. What qualities do you look for in a supplier or subcontractor before collaborating with them on a project?

I’m always looking for the best, in all areas. They need to have great quality of workmanship, be reliable, able to service any warranty issues that may arise, be courteous

ere is satisfaction in knowing your work stands out from the rest and sets the standard. e accolades bring confidence, but also inspire a drive for me to continue to improve.

to other trades and my clients, and maintain a team mentality which encompasses looking out for the trade before and after you. Can you discuss how you foster collaboration and communication among your team, including suppliers and subcontractors?

I encourage all my trades, suppliers and employees to give me feedback so we can always raise the bar. If something doesn’t work out we discuss alternatives or how to do better in the future.

What role do your subcontractors play in your overall construction process, and how do you ensure their needs are met as well?

They play a huge role, as ultimately without them the build wouldn’t be possible. I involve them in the early planning stages of the job and that way they can give me their advice or opinion on how we can achieve specific finishes requested by our clients and architects.

How do you ensure that the materials provided by suppliers meet the quality standards required for your projects?

We always buy our materials from reputable sources. Upon delivery all materials are inspected and if not up to the standard, we will not install it. We also ask all our trades and suppliers for feedback on specific products, how it holds up long term, and if it has the potential to cause issues down the track. These are all things we investigate prior to installing in our builds.

Can you share an example of a successful project that was made possible because

of the contributions from a specific supplier or subcontractor?

One that comes to mind is the helical staircase at our Sandy Beach build. Our contractor, Steve from N-Mack Engineering put a huge amount of effort in to construct the structure and install it, and without his skills it simply would not have been possible. Our plasterers, painters and floor layers put the final touches on it and it turned out to be quite a masterpiece.

How do you keep your suppliers and subcontractors informed about changes in your project specifications or industry developments?

It is usually a combination of emails and collaborative note sharing done via apps. We also keep a white board on site so trades and suppliers can feel free to write notes on or see our schedule of works.

How important is it for you to source materials and services locally, and what benefits have you experienced from doing so?

The most beneficial part I find is that if there is

any problem or warranty issue with the product or service, its much easier and quicker to resolve from locals.

What do you envision for the future of your relationships with suppliers and subcontractors as you grow your business?

I like to think of us as one big team where everyone looks out for one another to reach a common goal. I would like this to continue and get stronger as the business grows and I would

like to introduce stronger collaboration on my future projects.

How has working closely with suppliers and subcontractors influenced your development as a builder?

I find my good suppliers and subcontractors actually make me grow as a person and be a better builder. I am always open to suggestions, and I try to learn new things from them, whether it is personally or professionally.

What advice would you give to other builders about cultivating strong relationships with their suppliers and subcontractors?

Always have respect for them. If they value you, they will generally look out for you and make sure they provide a quality service on your builds. Keep communication lines open and if something isn’t right don’t be afraid to discuss it with them. If they aren’t willing to listen, then they aren’t the subcontractor for you.

Adrienne Smh

Hi Adrienne, could you share a bit about your background and how you came to be living in this beautiful corner of the world?

I was born in Dublin, Ireland, and lived in an immigrant hostel in Sydney’s west for 14 months. Once we had a home, Dad always grew veggies on our small house block and I immediately became the quintessential Aussie kid outside, in the bush or river all day long. I’ve always loved nature and am still happiest in the open spaces. I moved to the Nambucca Valley 33 years ago, and raised 3 children on 100 acres west of Macksville. Having grown up with fresh vegetables and eggs from the yard and local cattle in the pastures, all my children love their food and cooking. Now, with children of their own (I have 4 grandchildren and another on the way) the whole family, including my parents, absolutely adore gathering at Sunny Corner Pastures.

With a background in the world of business, this is quite a change for you, what inspired you to want to move to

SUNNY CORNER

PASTURES

Adrienne Smith went from the busy life of managing a very successful dealership to living on an idyllic and peaceful property just outside of Bellingen; Sunny Corner Pastures, and she has opened up her property and lifestyle for others to enjoy also.

a property like this and reinvent your lifestyle?

My long-time goal was to own a property large enough for family and friends to gather and where people could come to rest and restore. In fact, this was in my 10-year business plan and exit strategy from my corporate career, a personal goal I always envisioned for my next season of life. I retired in 2021 from a very successful business after 30 years of growth and leadership. I feel comfortable having secured the business for the next generation, and my son is now the Group General Manager. One morning, I checked a real estate email, and that click and ensuing phone call and visit to SCP changed the course of my semi-retirement, and my goal became a reality. I am enjoying the slower pace and time to reflect and nourish my mind and body on a deep level. I have never felt more at ease or content with life. I feel much more aligned with my true self and my mental, physical and emotional health has never been better.

Sunny Corner Pastures has beautiful accommodation on offer, and everything is so well thought out. What are some

of your favourite features or things that guests often comment on?

Sunny Corner Pastures is an intimate couples and adult retreat perched on a rain-forested hilltop overlooking the sleepy Kalang River, only 5 minutes from Bellingen town centre. I love how private the retreat is, with 3 fully selfcontained guest units, all with well-appointed kitchenettes and your own private balcony overlooking the Kalang River. When you checkin, there is no need to venture far, and you can switch off from reality.

This accommodation has been holistically designed to rejuvenate every one of your senses. Soak up the warm mineral water in your own traditional steaming cedar hot tub, toast your toes against the wood fireplace in winter or cool yourself in the large sparkling pool in summer. There is also a traditional Cedar Sauna and Cold plunge cedar tub on the common deck overlooking the glorious pastures, which contain long lunch, massage and picnic areas down by the river.

I also take a lot of pride in ensuring the little details are accommodated to. It’s a quiet paradise, consciously set up for rest,

restoration, just what

reconnection and most of us require in this fast-paced world!

warm mineral water in your own traditional steaming cedar hot tub, toast your toes against the wood fireplace in winter or cool yourself in the large sparkling pool in summer.

Guests always comment on how deeply they sleep and how amazingly remote they feel yet they are so close to all that vibrant Bellingen has to offer. They often book massages for their room or bodywork/ healing by the river. It’s popular to experience hot and cold therapy in the sauna and cold cedar plunge. Some love walking around the property and rainforest and visiting the riverbank. Others adore our animals and vegetable gardens. Some just soak in their hot tub and relax on their verandas and do not surface for days. We have had proposals, honeymooners, romantic vacations, best friends spending quality time together, and adult families all coming together and enjoying the whole property to themselves. Recently, we hosted a top model who was photographed onsite for the local boutique State of Embrace. The property is perfect for this, and we hope to host their launch through a long lunch in the New Year.

The property is also a working tiny farm with a strong ethos of treading lightly and sustainably. What are some of the things you’re farming and what are your goals with the farm?

We are fully selfsustainable, with our own rainwater, solar power, battery backup and then the generator if all else fails. At the moment our two Jersey cows have birthed beautiful cross angus calves and our angus girl a lovely full angus calf. We nourish our families and friends with this meat along with goat as well. Our animals have a wonderful organic grass fed and interactive lifestyle. We have a wonderful butcher who comes on site with us when it's time. Our pasture free-range hens provide eggs for us and our guests and we have a range of vegetables and some fruit trees. With a view to doing more with our land, in February full time Farm and Property Manager Brendan Hain came on board. He is well experienced having grown up in Bellingen and brings new skills and a passion for health which has enabled us to branch into new areas such as the vegetables. We love sharing all we have and hope to offer this to guests on departure by way of produce boxes they can purchase. We believe food is nourishment, fuel and medicine. You have an obvious passion for healthy living. What would you love to see happening on the farm in the next few years? Do you have any aspirations for the future?

Over the decades, I’ve trained in counselling, coaching, positive psychology, meditation, Yin Yoga, Reiki, and martial arts. I have a keen interest in understanding the connection between mental and physical health by studying and nourishing our gut microbiome. You cannot ignore the simple things; sleep, sunlight, movement and food. I’ve been in collaboration with skilled local practitioners in these fields, and we are collaborating to introduce wellness workshops to enjoy onsite at Sunny Corner Pastures. I’m enjoying letting the journey unfold and develop organically. We are now receiving inquiries for part wedding packages, the night before the wedding for brides and their bridesmaids is an enjoyable one. The cabins are perfect to have hair and makeup done for the big day and the photography is stunning on site. Our website is only just live and being further enhanced to allow guests to select many add-ons to their stay. We really are excited about the future and most importantly, protecting the peace and tranquility for guests while holding a deep respect for this precious piece of paradise we are lucky enough to call home.
