Nicole and Paul Watson are the passionate owners of Thrive Pilates, a studio that has grown and developed over the years into a community hub for people wanting to be strong and healthy, and give themselves regular time to look after both their bodies and minds. Nicole and Paul, along with their team, have created a welcoming and fun environment, and they have some exciting new plans in the works too.

NICOLE &PAUL Watson

Hi guys. Tell us a bit about your background and how you were first introduced to pilates and the world of health and fitness?

We met in Brisbane and have been together for almost 20 years. Paul comes from a government and banking background and I’ve always worked in administration and office management roles.

Our son was 12 months old when I realised I needed to make some changes. I was really unhappy with how my body was feeling so I joined a gym and started seeing a PT and while I lost the weight I wanted to lose, I didn’t feel strong. I felt like I was spending a lot of time (and money) but didn’t feel like I was hitting the goals I wanted to reach. I started doing Pilates after I went along to a class with a friend and absolutely fell in love with it. It was such a different way to move but I felt completely supported and challenged throughout the class and Paul got dragged along for the ride! He ended up doing regular classes at the studio I was managing and I remember him coming home from his first class and saying “I understand what you’ve been saying, I can see why people fall in love with it” - that was after he crawled up the stairs muttering of course.

While I lost the weight I wanted to lose, I didn’t feel strong. I felt like I was spending a lot of time (and money) but didn’t feel like I was hitting the goals I wanted to reach.

How did you come to be the proud owners of Thrive?

I ended up working in the office of the studio where I was doing classes as a member, although I had absolutely no intention of ever teaching a class. Over the next couple of years however, I worked my way through admin and sales, as well as becoming an instructor, to eventually start managing the studio. We were then approached by the owners to go into a partnership with them and open the Coffs Studio in early 2016. We were in a partnership and franchise for a few

years and then took over full ownership and rebranded at the end of 2021. Since then, we have almost doubled our membership base and have grown our instructor team to a group of incredibly supportive and amazing women who teach the most epic classes to our members, coming up with new moves and class plans everyday! Naomi, our studio manager, started out as a member with us, then became an instructor and is now looking after all of the Coffs crew as well as teaching a whole heap of classes too.

Continued over...

You each come from pretty different professional backgrounds before you joined forces with Thrive, what strengths do you each bring to your business? What’s the dynamic like between you at work?

With Paul having left government and me having worked in the fitness industry for a couple of years but having never owned my own business, it took us a while to find our groove! We work really hard to ensure our members have a really seamless time booking classes and often have members say to us ‘oh we forget you guys are actually running a business behind the scenes!’ so needless to say there’s a lot of admin work done at home on the kitchen bench!

I love teaching classes and being in the studioit fills my cup to see people moving their bodies in such a fun environment but I’ve really learnt to embrace the ‘business stuff’; the accounting and spreadsheets and budget stuff that goes along with owning your own business!

Paul has always done the behind the scenes work, creating the website and dealing with the accountants etc, but has really learned to love teaching and very much enjoys the social part of the studio!! You’ll often find him doing reception and servicing the machines every week in both studios.

Together, we talk a lot as we walk the streets of Corindi and have really learned to make sure that “the same page” means the same thing for both of us.

Can you tell us about what your goals were when starting the studio? What were you hoping Thrive would provide for the Coffs Coast community?

Thrive provides space where members can laugh and enjoy their classes - you can often hear laughter from the carpark when classes are running!

Thrive is all about holding space for members to move their bodies and fall in love with exercise. As I was going through my weight loss journey after my son was born, I really didn’t enjoy the process due to the repetitive nature of the classes and sessions I was doing. I went to the same gym in Brisbane for 5+ years and was never called by my first name by any of the staff so one of the things we committed to was to not only learn every single members name, but to get to know them. I still run into people at the Plaza who haven’t been at the studio in years and remember their names!

Additionally, we were hoping to provide

NICOLE &PAUL Watson

something a little different for the Coffs Coast community and wanted people to want to come back to the classes and have fun in the process of exercise. I think a lot of people were raised to use exercise as a punishment and we wanted to rewrite that narrative. Thrive provides space where members can laugh and enjoy their classes; you can often hear laughter from the carpark when classes are running!

What are some of the classes and services available at Thrive?

We provide 50+ fitness pilates based classes every single week. The combination of Reformer Pilates, Matwork Pilates, Barre, Yoga and high intensity classes are all designed to compliment each other. The cardio in barre and high intensity classes works really well with the strength and resistance work we do in reformer. The balance and body weight work

done in matwork really compliments the stretch and yoga classes. You take a very holistic approach in your field, what are some of your other areas of interest when it comes to our health?

We call Thrive the ‘Movement & Mindset

Some of the best feedback we’ve received from members isn’t so much about the classes but about the results they have received because of what they’ve been doing in the studio!

Studio’ because a healthy mind and body are just as important as each other. It’s not just about moving your body, it’s about carving out space to allow your mind to rest for 45 minutes. We find that a lot of members come on their way to work or on their way home so we make sure that we add a few deep breaths to our classes to let them switch off and allow the 45 minutes they are in the studio to be just about them.

Some of the best feedback we’ve received from members isn’t so much about the classes but about the results they have received because of what they’ve been doing in the

THRIVE PILATES

studio! Things like being able to kiss the Blarney Stone in Ireland because their knees didn’t hurt walking about the stairs of the castle; not tripping on the cobblestone streets while travelling around Italy; or walking on the uneven ground in Bali and being able to keep up with their kids on bike rides around the neighbourhood.

Not to mention the increased abilities when horse riding, surfing or even standing all day at a music festival.

For us, it’s never been about the weight loss or how your body looks, we want people to feel strong and to move freely with their families! You’re now a well-established business here in Coffs, have you got any plans or aspirations for Thrive Pilates moving into

the future?

We have been open in Coffs for over 7 years now and opened our Grafton studio 18 months ago. We are known around town for our big group classes, however in the next few months, we will be introducing to Coffs some really incredible small group offerings as well. We are also looking forward to sharing the Thrive love with even more people in the near future too (hello new location!!!!) - so keep your eyes peeled for more information being released soon!!

Where can we find out more or get in touch?

We’re pretty active on social media so you can find us on Facebook (https://www.facebook. com/thrivepilatesmnc) and Instagram (https:// www.instagram.com/thrivepilates_mnc) or our website is www.thrivepilates.com.au

Can you introduce us to the team that produces these amazing shows.

magic to the stage with his vision for lighting and Greg Wilson Jr is our sound designer. Our cast of 8 are dancers aged 16-18 years who have been dancing and performing all of their lives! Matthew Mcghee, Seeana Harre, Ella Sinclair, Ella Grace Chowdhury, Lauren Blair, Heidi Blades, Daisy Dusting and Isobel Stockton make up our amazing cast after our auditions in 2023.

Tell us about the show Billie; what can we expect from this production?

BILLIE is a performance art style show that showcases our cast of 8 to music inspired by Billie Eilish. The themes and stories Billie Eilish tells through her music are so relatable

to everyone, no matter what age you are. Each cast member has their own journey that they experience in the show, whether it’s selfdoubt, anxiety, depression, perfectionism, etc. Experiencing young adult’s vulnerability through movement is a powerful thing to witness! There are 70 minutes of absolute magic on stage, no words spoken, yet hearts are moving mountains. It is the perfect show for kids, teens and adults. No matter who you are, you will go on your own journey with us! We are excited to be bringing this show to Coffs Harbour (which has almost sold out!) and Taree which will feature dancers from Port Macquarie’s La Vive Studios as our local guests.

HTravers Ross aka Yt DiNGO is heading out on his exciting Body That Bliss Aus x UK tour and so we had a chat with him and DJ RedBelly, who will be accompanying him on the tour, to find out what we can expect from these shows!

AKA TRAVERS ROSS &

DJ RedBelly Yt DiNGO

i Trav. Tell us a bit about what you have been up to since we last spoke?

What I did tell you last time was that I was heading to the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, but what I didn’t get to tell you was that I ended up performing at Murrayfield Stadium with Djuki Mala, GOM Circus and Scotland Youth Choir, Brìghde Chaimbeul and Kathleen McInnes.

I went to Scotland to reconnect with my

ancestors and the land my bloodlines travelled to. As it turned out, when I landed in London I got a call from Djuki Mala asking if I would perform with them. One of their dancers didn’t make it over and I was the only other person that knew the performance (because I helped create it).

I got diverted to their rehearsals in Germany and finally my arrival into Scotland where I performed to over 16,000 Scots at the world's largest performing arts festival, Edinburgh International Festival.

It was a true honour. Through Gumbaynggirr

language keeper Clark Webb I was connected to Gaelic consultant and language keeper Àdhamh Ó Broin, and I had the honour of inviting him to the performance and meeting him in person. Following this, he then took me out to where my people came from. Àdhamh took me to the Scotland Well, connected me with a 5000 year old Yew tree and reconnected me to my roots as a Pictish descendant and I was taken through a cultural ceremony with Pictish stones.

I then turned that into a song featuring

can you share a bit about where you’ll be taking it?

I’ve been funded by Sound NSW to tour one of the latest singles ‘Macuaimhe’ throughout Scotland/UK which is phenomenal! I wanted to tour the East Coast, Meanjin/Brisbane to Naarm/ Melbourne, before we headed overseas and when we return, tour the rest of the East Coast right up to the tropics. I’m coming through the Mid North Coast at the end of July then heading south through Sydney, Katoomba, Canberra and through to Melbourne. I am so ready to see some full rooms of heads bopping like jellyfish! We gonna turn it up full bawllzzz and we gonna dance like it’s against the law!

What can we expect from the shows on this tour?

What are you most looking forward to about this tour? How does it feel to get out amongst the fans and perform a live show?

I am so pumped and I encourage everyone to come and have an experience. It’s nice to see people coming to support live performance again and I’m excited to see all the fans. It was great seeing them singin’ up the new tracks at the All One Under the Sun festival! Dancin’ up to the forsaken rhythms, singing along to the ancient languages and dingo howls. I look forward to sharing story and having space between songs to connect with the people and share some stories behind the music, lyrics and dances. It really is the moon in the night sky, a light in the dark. As much as everyone ends up dancing which is why I do it, I love taking moments to just be with everyone and connect to the feeling of community.

Àdhamh called ‘Macuaimhe’ (Echo) which was released this year following a previous release of my single ‘Ngarrangaa Wajaarr’ (Respect Country) featuring Clark Webb. Both singles will be performed on this upcoming tour and we’ll be playing along the east coast from Meanjin/Brisbane to Naarm/Melbourne, stopping in on the Mid North Coast. You have an exciting tour coming up,

Imagine a night with no boundaries, a dance pit with no rules, and Yt DiNGO’s raw energy on stage. With RedBelly (Indigenous DJ), weaving soulful, gritty tunes into a soundscape that will make you move, this tour is a sonic journey you won't want to miss. Yt DiNGO's performances are a hypnotic dance and lyrical feast, captivating audiences with tales of ancestral ties, life and the importance of protecting our natural world.

I have been learning Gumbaynggirr language with BMNAC, so ge ing to perform Ngarrangaa Wajaarr with Clark Webb is such an honour.

After dropping three singles this year with music videos, it’s time to share my journey live. Come along, let go, witness, and awaken as far into the dingo burrow as you please. Adding to the night, the tour will feature support acts from local Gumbaynggirr musician and language keeper Manduway Dutton and internationally known DJ and producer Coco Varma. There might be a surprise guest too, (shhh, Clark Webb) performing one of the latest singles, "Ngarraanga Wajaarr," live!

I’m really frothing to perform after being back in Gumbaynggirr for a couple years now. I have been learning Gumbaynggirr language with BMNAC, so getting to perform Ngarrangaa Wajaarr with Clark Webb is such an honour. We have also been mates since we attended school together at Jetty High…Wild! So that makes it even more memorable and I believe historical for the evolution of this community we have been birthed into.

We heard there might be some workshops happening too?

Yes, dance workshops and Redbelly (aka Bindimu) is doing weaving workshops, all happening on the same week as the shows. Check our websites for tickets and deets. www.yt-dingo.com/masterclass www.bindimu.com/workshops

We want to come to the show! Where can we get tickets?

Alyson

Pearson

ARTIST of the MONTH

Alyson Pearson aka Alykat Creative has been a well known fixture in the Coffs Coast art scene for some time now. Between her distinctive artworks and having provided a unique gallery and event space for the community for the last few years as well, Ally has been at the centre of it all. Since closing her physical space she has returned to being an artist and creator, and we are super excited to catch up with her and see what she’s got on the cards heading into the next phase of Alykat!

becomes a sort of digital collage that has no one-off original, which is why I print premium pigment inks on archival cotton paper to create keepsake fine art prints.

Since closing the book on your physical shop/gallery here in Coffs, you definitely haven’t stopped creating and coming up with new concepts. What have been some things you’ve been working on lately in the online space?

I feel like my whole apartment has now taken on what was the physical Alykat Gallery, and my website and social media are where people can explore my work and still experience all the quirky and colourful delights that come with my brand.

Hi Aly. Can you share with our readers a bit about your background as an artist?

I’ve always been the alternative-creative of a predominantly sporty family. I took to visual arts at school and eventually studied graphic design which really provided me with the tools and rules to create my own art.

How would you describe your art style and what are your preferred mediums?

Much to many people’s surprise, I don’t actually paint. With my background in graphic design, I’ve always loved the aesthetic of combining digital imagery and graphics with delicate and raw illustrations that often create a surreal and contemporary approach to art. By layering and playing with composition in Photoshop of both my scanned drawings and chopped up digital photos, my finished work

Since closing the physical gallery I’ve been creating a lot more and it’s been nice to get to be the artist again, instead of purely the gallery owner/curator. Being invited to create and show work for group exhibitions at Yarrila, Archive and Fyreside, and host a big solo exhibition at King Tide earlier in the year, and now displaying artwork at Hope Road café, I’m still very much in the creating zone and have always got a list of concepts on the go.

As a creative, living and working in a regional area, what have you learnt about getting by in this industry that you can share with others looking to do the same?

It’s definitely a running theme in the conversations among the creative industry here, it’s very rare that artists can survive purely from their art business alone. So I’m finding many of us can burn out because we’re not only putting our efforts and energy into our creative work, but also working a “day-job” to keep money coming in. I do think spaces like Alykat Gallery could’ve thrived in cities that go out looking for creative culture and have city-money to play with, but they’re missing the key ingredient that living in regional areas have; real connection and a sense of community.

Continued over...

I’m really quite grateful for the position I’m in and have worked towards where I can adjust my casual hours teaching at TAFE, be contracted to facilitate training programs and workshops, and every now and again take on creative commissioned projects, which are my favourite as I’m being paid well to create art in my own style which will in-turn be seen by a wide audience and help another brand or business stand out.

Can you tell us about the incredible mural you created at the hospital and the concept behind it?

The Coffs Harbour Hospital expansion was one of those creative commissioned projects where I got to bring my ideas to the big fancy tables of

one of those creative commissioned projects where I got to bring my ideas to the big fancy tables of government and advisory groups and get paid to do what I love.

government and advisory groups and get paid to do what I love. The brief was to create a calming, uplifting and playful scene, enticing the imagination of young patients making their way to seek treatment in the Paediatric Emergency Department. I achieved this by combining my whimsical drawings of a parasailing turtle, breaching dolphins with their Rainbow Lorikeet friends, colourful hot air balloons and carousel, with the Coffs Coast shoreline as the backdrop of the 8-metre printed vinyl artwork.

Can you also tell us about your role as a teacher at TAFE? What do you enjoy most about this role?

The brief was to create a calming, uplifting and playful scene, enticing the imagination of young patients making their way to seek treatment in the Paediatric Emergency Department.

I started out teaching Graphic Design in London at Shillington College and when I moved back home to Coffs in 2017 I wanted to continue sharing knowledge with aspiring creatives in a regional and more approachable, can I say ‘grass roots’ way, at the local TAFE. Unfortunately, Graphic Design Cert IV has previously struggled to get enough numbers in the Coffs area to go ahead, so it’s been a continued hope of mine that Coffs TAFE will try to run the course again, and with the connections I’ve made and many a conversation had with locals crying out for a course like this, it may go ahead again one day.

However, in a weird and wonderful turn of events, being a TAFE teacher with no design course to teach, I started helping out with Tech Savvy for Seniors and Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) short courses at the local libraries, which aim to help bridge the digital divide by providing knowledge and confidence to navigate technology. They’re rewarding programs and the senior participants are so grateful for the guidance, their newfound confidence, and the like-minded camaraderie in the class. You’ve got a milestone birthday coming up, what are some of your goals moving forward into the next phase of Alykat Creative and life in general?

I won’t lie, this one has been a tough reality pill to swallow, I’ve been in a state of denial that I have actually, officially, grown up!

Yes, checking into Fortyville this August! I won’t lie, this one has been a tough reality pill

to swallow; I’ve been in a state of denial that I have actually, officially, grown up!

This rude realisation that life really is short has shaken things up, but also brought on a sense of wisdom and gratitude to be alive. Enjoying those beautiful endorphins we get when exercising (and now the legit joint pain that comes with them) and spending time with my folks, I’m edging closer towards a humble reminder that.. YOLO!

With all of that, I feel more drive and confidence to grow my Alykat brand in bold ways and set myself up as a successful artist for the future.

The Coffs community have really supported my bright and colourful ways and reassured me I can do this art thing. I’m ready to branch out and wholesale to a wider audience, think gallery shops, zoos, wildlife and information centres around the country, then.. the world! Why not, you do only live once after all.

Arjay has been playing representative basketball with the Valley Braves since he was 14 years old. It has been an important part of his life and he recently created the designs which now feature on the Braves proud Gumbaynggirr, Gomeroi, Dunghu i young man and his artwork tells the story of people gathering together for basketball on his homelandsGumbaynggirr Country. part feature on the Braves jerseys. Arjay is a and Bundjalung artwork

Hey Arjay, how long have you been playing basketball and been a part of the Valley Braves?

I've been playing basketball since I was about 9 years old. When I was 14 I joined the Valley Braves Basketball and have played representative basketball here ever since. The club has been really welcoming and is run by some really dedicated volunteers. What does basketball mean to you? Basketball to me is about enjoying my time playing sport with friends. It is about being a team player, working hard and never giving up. I've met heaps of people locally and from other areas through representative basketball. Being a member of a team is important and learning skills like how to communicate, respect others, be a leader and work together is important and something I carry into other areas of my life. You were recently asked to help design the latest jersey for the Braves. What inspired your design for the teams? Are there any specific cultural or personal elements that you incorporated?

they were after. When I started painting I started with the rivers representing the area in which the Valley Braves are from, and then went on to paint the Braves community gathering, and finally bush tucker to represent people sharing a feed and time together. The valleys were incorporated into the design also to represent the landscape.

How long have you been doing art and how important is it to you?

I've grown up learning how to paint but never worked on a bigger project until now. Art for me is my culture and a way to communicate through the elements. It's a way to share my story, my family and community's story.

My mob inspired my designs. I'm a proud Gumbaynggirr, Gomeroi, Dunghutti and Bundjalung young man. My family come from the Nambucca Valley where Valley Braves Club is based so I wanted to represent that area. The design includes the rivers that intertwine through the Nambucca Valley, ‘Gagaal’ the ocean and the totem for Gumbaynggirr Nation is also central to the design. Other elements represent people gathering together to eat, play basketball and spend time yarning.

How does your design reflect your Indigenous heritage, and why was it important for you to include those elements you chose to display?

Can you walk us through your design process from initial concept to final product?

The idea was to design different elements of Aboriginal art to include in the jersey. I spoke to my family to learn how I could represent different elements and spoke to Shane from Valley Braves about what

Aboriginal kids and young people to follow their dreams and either continue or start designing art or pursuing their chosen sport. Sport has so many benefits for young people. Designing the artwork has been a great process and I like educating other people on my culture. It's important for people to acknowledge and show respect for our Gumbaynggirr Country and traditional custodians across Australia.

What has been the most rewarding part of seeing your design come to life on the team’s uniforms?

e design includes the rivers that intertwine through the Nambucca Valley, ‘Gagaal’ the ocean and the totem for Gumbaynggirr Nation is also central to the design.

The elements displayed in my artwork show the Valley Braves community coming together to play the game we love. Gumbaynggirr Country is important in the design as this is the Country I belong to and where my ancestors have lived and walked for thousands of years. Gumbaynggirr Country includes the mountains, valleys, freshwater rivers and the sea. All of which are important to our heritage, connecting all our stories today with Gumbaynggirr cultural influence and are included in my design. My Gumbaynggir name’ Ngaarlu’ means water, and Ngaarlu is really significant in my life and for other Gumbaynggirr people as well.

When wearing the Valley Braves jersey and merchandise I feel really proud to have been the one to create the design. I'm really honoured to represent my Elders and my family. I've learnt some of my Gumbaynggirr stories and culture and love speaking the language but I have so much more to learn from my Elders.

What does it feel like to represent your culture both on the court and through your artwork?

I feel immensely proud to wear this jersey on the court. The first time we wore it as a team, we played at Wiigulga on Gumbaynggirr Country which made it even more special. Some of my family were there and they all loved to see me play and to see other people acknowledging our Gumbaynggirr culture.

What advice would you give to other young Indigenous athletes and artists who are looking to follow their passions?

How do you hope your design will impact and inspire other young Indigenous athletes and artists?

I hope my artwork inspires other

My advice would be to do whatever you enjoy most, work hard at whatever it is, and to always remember the strength of our people and ancestors, and be proud of who you are.

Thanks Arjay.

NATHAN ARMSTRONG

NDA MEDIA

Nathan Armstrong is moving from strength to strength a er taking the plunge and moving away from his ‘day job’ and pursuing his creative dreams with his own small business as a videographer.

Hey Nathan, can you tell us a bit about yourself and how you first became interested in videography?

I moved to the Coffs Harbour area in 2022 from Sydney to move closer to my wife’s family in Inverell, NSW. We had made the decision that I would pursue my hobby in Coffs Harbour and make it a career as I wasn’t enjoying working long repetitive hours. I had previously been working as a Fire Sprinkler Technician and prior to that I had been in the Australian Air Force as a Structural Technician.

I was always interested in creating videos as my Pop and Dad had always captured family memories on home films. Once I became older I enjoyed creating personal films for family and friends’ adventures. People seemed to enjoy these so I also began capturing images on my drone and selling these as a side hustle. What were some of the early influences that sparked your passion for creating videos?

My early influences were definitely my Pop and my Dad. Rewatching family films has always been something really special to me and I wanted to create something similar with a modern twist. I recently received the old tape video recorder that my Dad used when we were kids and am using this to create short family films of our newborn son, Billy.

I remember calling about 20 real estate agents offering a free service. I got one bite and from that bite along with great service I was gaining momentum.

How did you get started in the videography industry? What were some of your first projects?

Having a full time job in the fire protection industry I had a passion to learn videography. The only way I could do that was after hours and the power of YouTube. My passion for videography was so strong that it led to a significant investment in camera gear and time while still working full time hours. On

the weekends I would practice with my now wife (she was a great sport) and really just trial and error to develop my skills. While it was TV time at night it would be YouTube for me. Over time I completed free jobs for friends which turned into small payments from clients to now receiving big retainers from businesses. I really urge people that if you have a passion for something - go for it!

One of my first projects in the videography industry was shooting a wedding for a family friend and then that wedding led to another which sparked my creativity for story telling. Moving away from Sydney to Coffs Harbour in 2022 I had no contacts or clients. I had to start from scratch and offered free videography services to anyone and any business. I remember calling about 20 real estate agents offering a free service. I got one bite and from

that bite along with great service I was gaining momentum.

I love ge ing creative with all types of genres that allow for me to think outside the box and put my own creative flair on it.

What was the first project that made you feel you had truly arrived as a professional videographer?

My first project that made me feel like I had truly arrived was shooting for a large international meat corporation and working closely with the CEO who valued my videography advice.

How do you approach a new project? Can you walk us through your creative process from concept to final edit?

Firstly a client will reach out to me and I respond with a series of questions to better understand their business needs. From here I write up a script with some visual concepts for the production. Once we fine tune the idea I then direct, produce and edit the film to the customers satisfaction.

What has been your most memorable project to date, and why?

My most memorable project would be my

recent trip to Queenstown to film a wedding. I had the pleasure of filming an intimate wedding of 40 guests in front of the snow capped mountains in Queenstown followed by a helicopter ride to film portraits on top of the highest peak. Definitely a day to remember for not only the couple, but also myself.

What would you say is your favourite type of genre to film?

I don’t really have a favourite. I love getting creative with all types of genres that allow for me to think outside the box and put my own creative flair on it. But if I really did have to pick one, it would be storytelling.

What are your long-term goals as a videographer? Are there any dream projects you hope to work on?

My long term goals would be shooting commercials for established brands and shooting destination weddings. Once the business can run itself I would like to give back to the community and film documentaries about unique situations.

How has your journey as a videographer shaped you personally and professionally?

My journey running my own media company has allowed me to have more flexibility and freedom in life by not being restricted to 9-5 hours. I am able to spend more time with my wife and now be present to support her from home with our newborn son.

I can also put in extra hours when required and reach short deadlines outside of regular office hours. These quick turnaround times make me an asset to my commercial clients who require fast results. I have also grown my social skills which helps me to develop strong, trusting professional relationships.

What do you find most rewarding about your work?

One of the most rewarding parts of my work would be receiving positive reviews from couples and clients. It is a truly satisfying and fulfilling experience to know that I have helped capture their needs. I love that I can express my creativity through my work and there is no right or wrong answer when it comes to the art of film. I also love that I can work from home and spend more time with my family.

Where can we find out more?

You can find out more by checking out my Wedding Instagram _nda.media or my commercial Instagram _ndamedia . Otherwise, feel free to email me at info@ndamedia.com.au

ORR Laura

Laura Orr and her dad Steve Parkin are tackling this year's Mystery Box Rally in the Hogwarts Xpress, AKA their souped-up 1993 Ford Falcon! They are participating to raise funds for cancer research, a er having experienced how cancer can affect families first hand.

Hi Laura, what motivated you and your Dad to sign up for the Mystery Box Rally 2024?

Dad and I were motivated to sign up for the rally in dedication to my niece, Charli.

Charli was diagnosed with leukaemia when she was just 3 years old. She underwent years of gruelling treatments including a lifesaving bone marrow transplant at the age of 6. Cancer nearly took her from us, but thankfully, due to the incredible interventions that cancer research projects have led us to, she is now a beautiful thriving 16 year old living her best life.

Not long after I signed up to participate in the rally, my husband, Dave, was diagnosed with Stage 3 Bowel Cancer. He underwent surgery in December and started chemotherapy in January this year. Unfortunately, his body did not respond well to the treatment, and he became cardiotoxic. In February, Dave

suffered an out-of-hospital VF cardiac arrest. The survival rates are very low, less than 5%, but incredibly the Coffs Harbour Golf Course, (where the arrest happened), had a defibrillator on-hand as well as having 2 retired police and a retired paramedic on the premises who administered CPR within minutes, saving his life. The decision was made to discontinue chemotherapy which means that the risk of his cancer returning is sitting at about 50/50.

The decision was made to discontinue chemotherapy which means that the risk of his cancer returning is si ing at about 50/50.

Since signing up for the rally, our motivation for the rally has doubled and we are hellbent on contributing as much to this cause as possible.

Could you tell us about the rally and what the purpose of the event is?

The rally is a 5 day, long distance drive with the sole aim of raising funds for cancer research projects. There are 300 participants (in teams of two) who must drive their 25+ year old eclectic cars along a mystery route. This year, the drive will start and finish in Airlie Beach Queensland on the 16th of August, but all destinations in between are kept a mystery. We are only told where we are heading each morning before we set out for the day. We know that the route will head off the beaten track, so we are preparing to tackle heavily corrugated outback dirt roads and a lot of dust.

So tell us about your 1993 Ford Falcon ‘Hogwarts Xpress’, how did you acquire

the car and get it rally ready?

Our car, now honourably known as the ‘Hogwarts Xpress’, was previously unregistered and sitting on a farm on one of our friends’ properties. Upon hearing we were doing the rally he offered the car to us, and in true Aussie tradition, we traded the old falcon for a carton of beer. It needed some work done but was overall in pretty good nick. The community support has been amazing and much of the work done on the car has been donated by businesses. It has now been registered with the Auto club and is proudly bearing historical number plates, which is pretty cool. We are getting some new tyres that will handle the offroad conditions a little better but otherwise we are ready to go.

How did you decide on the theme for the car? What was the process of decorating and fitting out the car like?

The car has been hand painted and we found an old ca le feed trough to make an improvised train chimney on the bonnet.

I grew up during the hype of Harry Potter and the movies were always released around my birthday. Dad and I would always make it to the premieres together. We often made a night of it and would go to dinner and then head to the movies. It made sense for that to carry over and become the theme of our car.

Dad and I are both creative people, so the planning, fitting and decorating process was great fun. The car has been hand painted and we found an old cattle feed trough to make an improvised train chimney on the bonnet. Dad handmade 2 Nimbus 2000 replica broomsticks (our backup transport in case our car breaks down) and I made a Dementor and a Shrunken Head to accompany us. It has plenty of other Harry Potter inspired additions including Hedwig and the iconic sorting hat. You’re doing the rally with your Dad, Steve, what are you most looking forward to about tackling this adventure together?

If cancer has taught us anything, it is that life is unpredictable and sometimes quite fragile. I am really looking forward to spending the 5 days on the road with Dad and tackling

anything the journey throws at us. Sharing new experiences and creating lasting memories together is everything because you just don’t know what life is going to throw at you next.

What’s your game plan for the event? Any idea of what to expect and how you will tackle it?

Our plan is to have fun and make it to the finish line in one piece. Our first challenge is to successfully drive the car up to the start line at Airlie Beach. From there we are expecting everything from car troubles, long drives, endless dust and a whole lot of laughs. I am not mechanically inclined, so I have my fingers crossed that our car sees us till the end without too much drama.

What is your fundraising goal and how do you hope this money will contribute to the Cancer Council in Australia?

Each team has a target fundraising amount of $4,000 and, at the start, that was our goal. We have now more than doubled that amount, which is incredible. Every donation we receive is celebrated because we know first hand what a difference cancer research and awareness can make for individuals and families. It would be amazing for us to make it to $15,000.

The Box Rallies are one of the biggest organisations to fund cancer research in Australia with over $46 million donated

to Cancer Council since it was founded in 2009. To date, they have funded 62 cancer research programs with 5 fundraising projects annually. These research programs would not be possible if we, as a community, did not contribute. It is my hope that the money we raise will make a positive difference to someone’s life during their cancer battle. How are you planning on raising funds for the rally and how can people contribute or support your cause?

So far, the community support has been overwhelming. We have been reaching out to friends, family, and community organisations, many of which have gone above and beyond to support us. Dad held a firewood raffle which raised over $2,000 and we have been doing the Return and Earn bottles. I set up an Instagram account which we are hoping will also promote the cause. If anyone is wanting to support us, donations can be made via our donation page - 2024.mysteryboxrally.com.au/ hogwarts-xpress

Businesses can also get on board with taxdeductible donations, in-kind donations, or sponsorship. For any businesses wanting to get involved, I can be contacted via our Instagram @thehogwartsxpresscar

Where can we follow your journey or find out more about the fundraising?

We would love to take as many people as we can along with us on this journey. You can see our car and follow along with our adventures via our Instagram @thehogwartsxpresscar.

Arts onne

Nambucca Valley Phoenix will be hosting Ability Arts Connect; a two day event celebrating and sharing the art of people living with a disability through a conference, art workshops, a winter ball, and the Phoenix Art Prize exhibition opening.

Can you tell us about the inspiration behind the Ability Arts Connect project and how it came to be?

Nambucca Valley Phoenix is a community owned and operated not for profit organisation that was created back in the 1980s. Founded by parents of people with intellectual disabilities to create a place where their children could be a part of community, have employment, and participate in further education and programs, community is at the heart of everything we do.

Art has always been a core feature at Phoenix. We have a variety of art programs with many talented artists exhibiting and selling their work at the Phoenix Gallery & Café in Bowraville. Ability Arts Connect was inspired by our passion to create professional development opportunities for artists with a disability. We wanted to connect with other artists to network, get inspired and be creative together and to address the gaps in support for artists with disabilities in the region. The Phoenix Art Prize is our way to showcase the

talent in the region and acknowledge and celebrate the amazing contribution people with disabilities make to the arts and cultural landscape on the Mid North Coast (MNC).

What are the main goals and objectives of the Ability Arts Connect project?

As the name suggests, Ability Arts Connect’s main goals are to connect artists and their supporters, offer professional development opportunities and showcase the incredible artistic talent out there! The conference will bring people together to learn from experts in the field and to share their own experiences, the good and the bad. We hope to create a network so we can continue to share information post this event and provide ongoing support for artists and others in the field. Arts MNC will assist with the network development as part of their

commitment to increase inclusion and deliver creative outcomes in the region.

We wanted to connect with other artists to network, get inspired and be creative together and to address the gaps in support for artists with disabilities in the region.

The Phoenix Art Prize aims to highlight the variety of art created by artists living with disabilities in the region. The exhibition will be on show from Saturday 3rd to 31st August at the Phoenix Gallery and Café in Bowraville. The Winter Ball is all about having fun and meeting new people. We wanted to create a social event to help break down some of the social barriers people with disabilities often experience in meeting new people or enjoying a night out with family and friends. It is an inclusive event, and all are welcome!

You’ll be hosting a two-day event at the beginning of August; can you tell us about the variety of activities and events planned?

The Ability Arts Connect Conference is on

Supported art workshops in ceramics & painting will be run as an option for artists not wanting to participate in the conference.

The conference aims to both inform and learn from artists with lived experience of disability and other stakeholders. On Saturday 3rd August we will have the Phoenix Art Prize exhibition opening, artist talks and announcement of the prize winners. The Art Prize is a celebration of the diversity of art practice from artists with lived experience of disability. Nibbles will be provided, and our beautiful café will be open from 9am – 2pm. In the evening, we are hosting the Phoenix Winter Ball at Nambucca Heads RSL. Tickets are $50 & include dinner, DJ & a photobooth!

Could you tell us more about the Phoenix Art Prize?

Absolutely! First of all, entries close on the 14th of July and artists need to apply online through our website www.nvp.org.au. Do not miss out!

The Phoenix Art Prize is open to all artists 16+ who identify as living with a disability in the whole of the Mid North Coast and all levels of experience and mediums are welcome. The judges for the prize are Ashleigh Frost, Curator Yarrilla Arts & Museum, Dr Emma Gentle and Olivia Parker, Arts MNC Director. Prizes include $1000 for first prize, $600 for second prize and $400 for people’s choice

award, sponsored by Regional Australia Bank. The exhibition will open on the 3rd of August and the winner will be announced then, followed by the announcement of the people’s choice award on the 30th of August.

Can you share some details about the workshops and conferences that will be held during the event?

Yes, firstly people should know this event is free thanks to the support of the Regional Art Fund and Arts MNC. Guest speakers at the conference include Carly Marchment, who will talk about her experience as a professional artist with a disability, Ashleigh Frost, the Curator of Yarrilla Arts & Museum at Coffs Harbour will talk about what to consider when exhibiting art and becoming an exhibiting artist, and Dr Emma Gentle, Art Therapist and Academic will be discussing the relationship between art and wellbeing. There is also an open forum session to discuss the needs of artists in the region, share experiences and build connections. Supported art workshops in ceramics and painting will be run as an option for artists not wanting to participate in the conference. The workshops will be run by teachers Michaela Kloeckner and Sharyn Brady, both with a wealth of experience in their art practice and working with people with disabilities.

The Winter Ball at Nambucca Heads RSL sounds like a unique addition to the event. Can you tell us more about what attendees can expect from this celebration?

The Winter Ball is all about having fun and meeting new people! People can expect a great night with dinner and dancing and there will be a DJ and a photobooth. The Ballroom at the RSL will be dressed up in a winter theme. The Nambucca Heads RSL are sponsoring the event and have gowns and suits available for free for anyone in need of something special to wear. It is an inclusive event, and all are welcome. Tickets are $50 and are available from our website www.nvp. org.au.

What message would you like to convey to artists with disabilities who might be considering participating?

As this is the first event of its kind for the MNC we encourage everyone to have a go and explore their creative boundaries. We are so keen to see the variety of talent and various mediums people are working in. This is a platform for artists to tell their stories. Most importantly we want people to enjoy themselves.

FRAICHE, SEARED SALMON
JACK DANIELS AND LEMON CAPER SAUCE, PORK MILANESE DI LOMBARDY AND TOMATO CREAM PENNE PASTA from the Coramba Hotel

ANDY ALLEN

We had the pleasure of sitting down with the incredibly talented and renowned chef, Andy Allen. With an impressive culinary background and a passion for creating exceptional dishes, Chef Andy has made a name for himself in the culinary world. From his innovative cooking style to his commitment to sourcing local ingredients, Chef Andy continues to inspire and delight food enthusiasts around the globe.

Hi Andy, can you tell us about your culinary background and how you became a chef?

After winning MasterChef in 2012 I took up the opportunity to do some work experience at Three Blue Ducks Bronte. I instantly fell in love with the culture, philosophy and style of food that The Ducks were known for and I knew I wanted to be a part of it. Fast forward ten years and I'm super proud to be a part owner of our five venues. I'm at my happiest when I'm in the kitchen creating and enjoying some laughs with our staff and customers.

What is your cooking style or approach to creating dishes?

One of the reasons I was drawn to The Ducks is our uncomplicated approach to cooking with a focus on local produce and sustainability. We're not trying to reinvent the wheel with our food, we just want to produce good, honest food and max out of flavour with every dish we put up.

How do you stay inspired and continuously come up with new and innovative recipes?

I'm always inspired wherever I look when it comes to food. Whether that be learning from my peers in the restaurants, travelling abroad, meeting new producers, or even taking inspiration from all the talented home cooks that I'm fortunate enough to see in the MasterChef kitchen.

Can you tell us about the story behind Three Blue Ducks in Bellingen? How did it all begin and what led you to open the restaurant?

The town of Bello is what got us hooked on the project. We love the vibe, the people and the producers that are on our doorstep. It's a stunning part of the world.

What sets Three Blue Ducks in Bellingen apart from other restaurants in the area? How do you create a unique dining experience for your customers?

I think the location of the restaurant sets it apart. It sits amongst The Lodge’s 16 acres of manicured gardens with views across the surrounding Dorrigo National Park. Plus the fact that you can make a weekend of visiting us by staying at the Lodge, switching off, having a meal at The Ducks and exploring everything else that Bello has to offer.

implemented in your restaurant?

Sustainability is a key focus for Three Blue Ducks. Can you share some of the sustainable practices that you have

When choosing our products, we consider three main factors: the product’s origin, the cultivation method, and the packaging. We also aim to use every part of the product and compost any leftovers for future food growth. Our seafood is ethically and seasonally sourced from either Australia or New Zealand, our meat is sourced from farms that prioritise high animal welfare practices and we utilise as much of the whole animal as we can. We do not use plastic

bags, containers, or cups and instead opt for biodegradable packaging, glass, and paper and we work with our suppliers to reduce plastics also.

How do you source your ingredients for the menu? Do you prioritise local and organic produce?

At Three Blue Ducks, we are committed to making environmentally conscious decisions when it comes to the ingredients we use in our food. We believe in utilising local, sustainably sourced, and ethically produced items.

Continued over....

ANDY ALLEN

Three Blue Ducks has a reputation for its farm-to-table concept. Could you elaborate on the importance of supporting local farmers and producers in your business?

We've always wanted to promote a sense of community in the areas where our venues are. For us there's no better way to do this, than supporting local producers. We're super lucky with Bello - whether it be the land or the sea, we've got access to some top-notch produce.

Three Blue Ducks is known for its innovative and delicious dishes. Can you share some of the signature dishes on your menu and the inspiration behind them?

The menu for the Bellingen Long Lunch that Daz, our Head Chef Dani and myself have created, is complete with unseen dishes. We want to make it exciting for not just us, but the locals and anyone else who comes to the event. We're going to highlight existing producers we use, but also utilise ingredients from farmers in the area that we haven't worked with before. Some examples are, Smoked trout doughnuts - Bellingen Smokehouse, Bone marrow flatbread - Bello Beef,

Mushroom custard, ginger, green shallotCoffs Coast Mushrooms.

Collaboration seems to be an important aspect of Three Blue Ducks. Can you talk about any collaborations you have done with other local businesses or organisations?

We've recently started working with Good Cup in Byron Bay to reduce take-away coffee cups.

It is a simple reusable takeaway coffee cup that people can borrow instead of using a single use take away cup. Customers pay a deposit when they use the cup and it's refunded back to them when they return it. If it works well in Byron we'd love to bring it to Bello.

What is your vision for the future of Three Blue Ducks in Bellingen? Are there any upcoming projects or plans you can share with us?

The menu for the Bellingen Long Lunch that Daz, our Head chef Dani and myself have created, is complete with unseen dishes. We want to make it exciting for not just us, but the locals and anyone else who comes to the event.

We've learnt a lot over our first year of trading about the region and the local community. The next year is about building on the relationships we've built in that area. We're also super keen to roll out more food, wine and music events, which are in the works. Stay tuned! Lastly, what advice would you give to aspiring restaurant owners who want to create a successful and sustainable dining experience like Three Blue Ducks?

Look I'm not going to shy away from saying times are pretty tough in the industry at the moment. That being said, I think it's super important to back yourself, and stay true to your vision and values.

Thanks Andy

Eloise Riemann

Hi Eloise. Could you share a bit about your background and how you discovered your love of food and cooking?

My love for food found me… I was originally one of those crazy curly haired horsey girls being super blessed to have owned my own horse. I always thought I would follow an equine career of some sort but when I was 14-15 years of age my Dad said, “If you want to keep this horse, you have to pay for it yourself!”and I said “fine then.”

I had 3 jobs in high school. One of those was a kitchen hand at a local regional hatted restaurant down the road from my childhood home, Bells at Killcare, Central Coast, NSW. I also worked at one of its sister businesses which was luxury lodges at Pretty Beach House where a full house was 8 guests, all enjoying a 4-5 course degustation every night tailored to their dietary needs and wants.

Here is where I saw creations and techniques that I never knew existed!

When I was 17, I was put as the kitchen/chef's hand at Pretty Beach House and this is where my cooking adventure began.

What was your introduction into life as a

chef like? Where did you do your initial training and early work?

I knew I wanted to travel and that cheffing was a world recognised trade. I was soon offered an apprenticeship from Bells at Killcare. I have always been a believer in taking opportunities as they come and with Bells being a hatted restaurant with executive celebrity chef Stefano Manfredi and its luxury lodge sister business Pretty Beach House, I knew this was an opportunity I should probably take! Good food takes time.... I did some big hours in my apprenticeship working nights and double shifts on the weekends. It was opposite hours to your friends, so the chefs you work with end up forming a bit of a family as you spend most of your waking time with them.

On my travels I became fascinated by Australian native ingredients and using what is here. Australian Natives Edibles are a bank of untapped flavours that we are yet to master.

Hiace and zig zagged up and down the East Coast of Australia in search of food… and surf.

I was on the hunt for more knowledge about food and wanting to gain experience by working in many different kitchens. On my travels I became fascinated by Australian native ingredients and using what is here.

Australian Natives Edibles are a bank of untapped flavours that we are yet to master.

You have worked at a number of top restaurants and with some well-known chefs, what have you learned during your time in some of these establishments?

I gained skill from some of today’s well-known chefs that have taken on gastronomical excellence while on their cooking adventure. Once I became a qualified chef, mre and my partner hopped in our decked-out Toyota

Carbonara pasta sauce isn’t traditionally made from cream and bacon, and, don’t salt your egg mixture for your scrambled eggs before cooking, you season at the end.

It’s not only food you learn about though, cheffing is a very multicultural trade, I work

with people from all over the world from all walks of life undergoing their cooking journeys. You learn things about cultures, whether that be food, or ways of thinking from different pockets of the world, sharing past kitchen nightmare situations and funny travel stories.

You’re currently offering your services as a private chef here on the Coffs Coast, can you tell us a bit about the services you can provide?

Yes! There are two aspects to Chef Elle and my private chef services.

Chef Elle brings the restaurant to you, providing a private dining and chef's table experience in the comfort of your own home focused on a menu tailored to you, your guests and your event. From 3 course menus, degustation, canapes, grazing tables, antipasto platters and more. Chef Elle offers a range of services from lunch and dinner parties with family and friends, special occasions, corporate events, casual dinner, functions and intimate elopements whilst sourcing the finest and freshest local ingredients the Coffs Coast has to offer.

I also have weekly clients where I prepare healthy wholesome meals. Chef Elle will set you up with your own private chef to take the guesswork out of your week when it comes to the family dinner table, kids lunch boxes and all meals in between. If you're vegan, vegetarian, keto, diabetic, sugar free, fat free, gluten free or dairy free we offer weekly menu plans tailored to your dietary needs and wants.

You’re passionate about sourcing produce locally, could you tell us about some of the suppliers you like to use?

One of the main reasons I came here was the access to great quality fresh produce from passionate artisan makers and growers, whether that’s on farms or within small businesses. As I am a new small business, I have my eye on my suppliers and prime producers but haven’t had the opportunity to work with all of them yet. ‘Hearthfire’ for sourdough bread; ‘Muddrake’ mushrooms for exotic mushrooms; ‘Patch Organics’ for organic seasonal vegetables, herbs and fresh free-range chickens; ‘Bello Beef’ organic beef farm; ‘Thrones Butcher’ for other locally sourced meats and ‘Dorrigo Potatoes’. ‘A&DVEG’ source local vegetables, Coffs Harbour Fishermen's Co-op, for fresh seafood and 'The Providores Sawtell’ for all things in between.

This is just some of many. There is so much

more to offer here like locally made black garlic and a few native ingredients such as Dorrigo pepper.

I’m passionate for Australian native foods and the flavours of the bush.

I believe they are the undiscovered super foods of the world, providing a bank of untapped flavours we are yet to master. Not to mention they are naturally higher in vitamins and minerals then other superfoods from around the world! I love to cook foods of all kinds but especially the kind that fuels my body for my daily activities!

I’m a firm believer of eat the rainbow, be the rainbow and as elementary as that sounds, I do find myself going back to my kindergarten basics. My cooking journey has led me to having a vast knowledge of many cuisines and dietaries, pastry, butchery and baking skills. From fancy creative degustation’s to events and humble home cooked meals which has allowed me to feel social and creative with food!”

Matt McEwan and his Dad Steve have been running Reptile World here in Coffs Harbour together for a number of years now, as well as providing reptile demonstrations and education within the community. Reptile education is something they are passionate about and plan to continue to provide to the Coffs Coast for years to come.

Hey Matthew, Can you share a brief history of Reptile World and its significance to the Coffs Harbour community?

Reptile World is now over 20 years old. My family moved up to Coffs Harbour in 1995 from Sydney with the main goal of my Dad, Steve, pursuing his passion of working with reptiles as a full-time job. He started off by doing snake shows in 2000 for Reptile Awareness Displays in Tamworth, NSW and then branched off to start his own business, ‘Steve McEwan’s Reptile World’. His first show under his own business name was back in 2004. We then made the big move to ‘The Big Banana’ complex in 2019. We have an awesome permanent facility at the Big Banana but keep the mobile displays going so we can educate as many people as possible. Your father Steve and yourself started the Reptile park many years ago. Tell us about the history with reptiles in your family?

Matt McEwan

REPTILE WORLD

Reptiles have always been part of our family, even when my sister and I were growing up. Unlike many other kids having a dog or cat as a family pet, ours were always snakes, lizards, turtles, goannas and crocodiles. We would tag along with Dad when he removed snakes for the public from sheds and houses so we had exposure to some really cool critters from a young age. That definitely started my passion and I’ve gone on to follow in Dad’s footsteps while my sister works as a veterinarian in QLD. You have moved into a more full time role at Reptile World recently. How has the transition process been so far, with you taking on more responsibilities? The transition process has been great! I’m

Snappy has been part of our business for the last 18 years, however he is growing at a rapid pace and needs some more room!

really enjoying more responsibilities with more involvement in the business. One of my main goals within the next 12 months is to expand our crocodile enclosure for our croc ‘Snappy’. Snappy has been part of our business for the last 18 years, however he is growing at a rapid pace and needs some more room! As an expansion comes with high costs, I’m currently in the process of trying to receive some funding for the expansion. The local community has also been helping to fund Snaps enclosure with the use of GoFundMe. The community has helped raise a great portion towards the expansion, which we are beyond grateful for, so I’m excited for that last push to the finish line so everyone can see Snap in his new house.

If anyone would like to donate towards his cause, there is a QR code on this page that will take you directly to the funding page. We appreciate each and every donation regardless of the amount and we really appreciate the community rallying behind Snap.

How important is reptile awareness in the community?

To Steve and I, reptile education is of the utmost importance. Considering we live on the Coffs Coast where reptiles are very abundant, we consider reptile education to be as important as learning how to cross a road properly. Coffs Harbour and the surrounding suburbs are home to 16 different species of snake, with some of these being highly venomous. With Coffs boasting an array of great bush and nature walks which we all love to venture on from time to time, the likelihood of coming into contact with one of these species of snake is quite high. Having the knowledge and education on how to interact with snakes in the wild could potentially save your life and this is the reason why Steve and I take it as our responsibility to help pass on this education.

Coffs Harbour and the surrounding suburbs are home to 16 different species of snake, with some of these being highly venomous.

Steve is an iconic character on the Coffs Coast, presenting reptile shows for decades in local schools and communities. How do you hope to continue his legacy?

I’m already running my fair share of private tours here at the Reptile Centre, as well as doing birthday parties. Once Steve starts to wind back from the mobile demonstrations, I will take on more of that role too. I can’t wait to get out into the community and take off where he leaves off.

What's it like working alongside Steve full time?

Between the venomous snakes and Steve I’m always kept on my toes. I love being part of our family business and we’re great mates so we’ve got a good thing going.

Where do you hope to see the Reptile World headed into the future?

At this point in time, we are happy to maintain the number of reptiles that we are housing. There is a lot of time and effort behind the scenes to care for these animals with the needs they require, but I hope that we can remain a great resource for our community for years to come.

Where can we find out more about Reptile World?

To find out more information about Reptile World, you can head to our or social media pages and search ‘Reptile World Coffs Harbour’ or head to our website at www.reptileworld.net.au

We are also happy to chat all things reptiles if you make your way up to our facility.

Ayemin

KAHWKUHTOO

Ayemin Kahwkuhtoo is a Karenni man who grew up in a refugee camp in Thailand before rese ling in Coffs Harbour in 2011. Ayemin was recently awarded the 2024 Regional Unity Medal for his contribution to the community.

Hi Ayemin. Can you tell us about your early life in the Karenni Refugee Camp and what it was like growing up there?

I was born in 1992 when my parents fled to Thailand. The Burmese military was forcing all Karenni people who lived in the countryside to move to a town which was in a Burmese government controlled area. They killed everyone without question if they stayed in the countryside and they burnt villages and destroyed all crops and cut off the Karenni army supply.

My parents' village was far from town with no road exit so they were hiding in the jungle for a long time. They had no option but to flee to Thailand.

I grew up in the refugee camp until I graduated high school. UNICEF delivered basic food each month. JIS provided basic education and NGO’s provided other services but these were always limited. Many people would risk their lives going away from the refugee camp seeking work to support their families but often they would be tempted by drugs and gambling and be caught by the Thai

authorities for working illegally. Many times these people simply disappeared and this caused their families to be split.

My family knew there was no hope of a future for us in the refugee camp, which is why we looked for opportunities for resettlement in another country. We felt very lucky to be accepted by the Australian Government and in 2011 we left the refugee camp.

What were your initial thoughts and feelings when you first arrived in Australia at the age of 18?

When I first arrived in Australia in 2011 at age 18, I was hopeful to learn English and study at a high level, like university. I wanted to help my community and Karenni people back in the refugee camp.

But when I arrived in Coffs Harbour I realised it was difficult to understand people. Even though I had learnt some basic English in the camp, I was always guessing what people were saying.

I went to high school but did not finish because I found it very difficult to make friends at school and I felt very unstable in Coffs Harbour because many of the Karenni community were moving away. I also moved

to Brisbane for one year, but I realised I was not happy there and I made the decision to move back to Coffs Harbour and have come to love it here.

How did your experiences in the refugee camp shape your dreams and aspirations once you resettled in Coffs Harbour?

I think my experience growing up in a refugee camp allowed me to have a great sense of pride about being Karenni. Whilst we couldn’t achieve our dreams in the refugee camp, I knew that we needed to both live amongst the Karenni community and celebrate our culture, but we also needed to live in a place that afforded us the opportunity to help us to grow our dreams.

You’ve been instrumental in helping newly arrived Karenni refugees settle in Coffs Harbour. Can you describe some of the challenges these families face and how you assist them in overcoming these challenges?

Most Karenni parents in our community have never studied before and Karenni is their only language. Many people in Coffs Harbour assume our community speak Burmese and this is a constant challenge as often Burmese

interpreters are booked. Karenni people are often too polite and do not let organisations know that they do not understand Burmese. Housing is also a challenge as rents are expensive and employment is limited. With limited English, farm work is often the only option and this work is seasonal so it is challenging to find work that is offered all year round. I have worked hard and saved hard and I have been able to buy a home which has given me and my family great security. I always encourage other Karenni families to listen to my story and to save to buy a home so that they too can feel that sense of security.

Your work as an interpreter is vital to the Karenni community. What inspired you to take on this role, and what does a typical day look like for you in this capacity?

such as banking, enrolling in schools, finding housing, health and Centrelink.

Even when I am not in paid interpreting work, I work as a volunteer to help families navigate things like applying for housing and finding employment.

What are some of your favourite ways to share Karenni culture with the people of Coffs Harbour?

I have worked hard and saved hard and I have been able to buy a home which has given me and my family great security.

I know how important it is that newly arrived families have initial interpreting services to help them navigate their early settlement journey. My inspiration for becoming an interpreter is because I am passionate about growing the Karenni community in Coffs Harbour and I know that clearly understanding what services are available, and how best to navigate those services, is necessary for successful settlement. I help people in areas

I met Robin Ashley when she was working as a caseworker in refugee settlement. She has now become a good friend and together we have worked to help the Coffs Harbour community understand the Karenni culture. In 2019 we held a cultural festival, with Karenni dancing and food, and invited members of the Coffs Community to attend. This was a great success. Not only did it help Coffs Community members to understand our culture, but it helped local Karenni community members to feel a great sense of pride and to find a way of weaving their culture into their new home in Coffs Harbour.

One thing Robin and I are working incredibly hard on at the moment is to advocate for the Kay Htoe Boe festival to occur annually. We are hopeful that both the Council and the Botanical Gardens will support this

festival which is an important part of Karenni culture. The entire Karenni community in Coffs Harbour are hopeful that the Coffs Harbour community will be able to one day understand more about the Karenni community through the education this festival will provide. We are also confident that if we are successful, this will contribute towards tourism as Karenni families from across Australia will come to Coffs Harbour during the festival.

How did it feel to be awarded the 2024 Regional Unity Medal? What does this recognition mean to you personally?

I feel incredibly proud to be awarded the 2024 Regional Unity Medal.

I don’t think I realised until I attended the Harmony dinner in Sydney and was awarded the medal by the NSW Premier, quite how important this award was.

I have overcome some great difficulties in my life and to stand on the stage with the Regional Unity Medal I felt a great sense of pride, and also excitement about what this medal could mean for the Karenni community in Coffs Harbour. I have tried to use my exposure as a Regional Unity Medal winner to both educate people in Coffs Harbour about the Karenni population and also to help newly arrived Karenni families to understand both the challenges and the opportunities of living in Coffs Harbour. Despite the challenges, I believe Coffs Harbour is a wonderful place for Karenni people to settle and raise their families.

Laura and Cam have recently taken over the beloved Bellingen Video shop and plan to continue o ering DVD rentals whilst also adding some exciting new elements to the space, making it a true community space for all to enjoy. e Darkroom will become a space for events, workshops, screenings.. with some delicious snacks provided by Laura!

LAURA & CAM

Hey Laura and Cam. What inspired you both to revive the long standing video shop in Bellingen, especially in the age of digital streaming?

Cam has been a supporter of the video store since moving here 10 years ago, scouring the shelves for arthouse and classic movies, and relishing the opportunity to introduce his kids to the vanishing world of DVD stores, we’ve always much preferred physical media over streaming. There’s still something very special about coming into a video store and picking a DVD up off the shelf rather than just scrolling with your remote.

So when the news came out that the video store was in danger of indefinitely closing its doors, that was all Cam would talk about as we couldn't let this Bellingen institution die. Then one day I said...ok ... let's give it a go!

However, we knew that as a stand-alone DVD hire store it couldn’t survive, so while retaining

as much of the old school video store as feasible, we’ve changed the business focus to include more retail with a leaning toward film and photography related items, workshops, events and a Spanish inspired Snack Bar, and a new name more befitting the feel we created for the space.

Can you share some history about the original video shop and its significance to the Bellingen community?

e video store was in danger of indefinitely closing its doors and that was all Cam would talk about as we couldn’t let this Bellingen institution die.

Bellingen Video had been a community hub for 30 years, beginning in the days of VHS! In recent years, despite the best attempts of the previous owners, including having movie nights and gigs, the convenience of streaming has taken over and people just

aren’t hiring as many DVDs. Prior to being a video store it was a range of things including a billiards hall, the concrete pillars they put in the floors to keep the tables level are still here. What challenges have you faced during this revival process, and how have you overcome them?

When we took possession that was the moment when the penny dropped...we were now the owners of 25,000 DVD titles …and their discs stored in separate drawers, plus an unaccounted amount of various VHS. It's hard to imagine how much space and logistics 25,000 titles involve, let's just say it is A LOT! We are still sorting through them but will have on the shelves a curated collection of

classics and favourites.

What are some of the unique plans for changing up the space?

We discovered an incredible wood panelled heritage hall was hiding behind the DVD shelving! There was quite a bit of water damage and mould, so we’ve restored a lot of the internal features of the building, whilst also modernising some of the functional areas like the service counter, and we’ve built a small stage for music and theatre performance. Beyond that Laura will be providing amazing food and beverages and a range of high end snacks and organic popcorn flavours. Will you offer any special services or events, like movie nights or film discussions?

All of the above! We’ve installed a huge new screen and 4K high def projector, cinema style seating and a 5.1 surround sound system, we will definitely have guest presenters and will be offering movie club style memberships. We want the space to be family friendly just as before, with all kinds of creative workshops and activities for kids and adults.

What are some of your own personal favourite films?

Cam’s the cinephile and has a broad range

of favourites. He loves epics like Lawrence of Arabia, classic sci-fi like Bladerunner, and Arthouse directors Wim Wenders etc. He has a soft spot for 80’s TV movies and Australian classics, also international filmmakers like Kurosawa and Luc Besson, but really likes everything classic and cult.

Cam will be running photography workshops and we hope to invite many other artists, creatives, performers and musicians to share their wisdom with the community.

devices and instant gratification and the first time you print your own photo in a darkroom it is simply magic, and it never gets boring. Phones won’t be allowed in a working darkroom where anything but the safelight will ruin prints, so it could be a good way to break the cycle of phone addiction that some kids have.

What motivated you to include a dark room for photographers as part of your video shop revival?

The original idea was actually to refurbish an old van and transform it into a dark room...but soon we realised that Cam was simply too tall to operate from a van and then the video store idea came along.

Cam has been an avid photographer since he was 10, and whilst he also works in digital he wanted to offer an analog darkroom as an antidote to what he calls ‘the digital pandemic’ for everyone, but for children in particular. Learning film photography is a great way to learn patience and take the focus away from

Are there any community events or workshops you’re planning to host in the future?

Yes, Cam will be running photography workshops and we hope to invite many other artists, creatives, performers and musicians to share their wisdom with the community. Where do you hope to see the shop heading into the future?

Our goal is for the Dark Room to become a community hub. A welcoming space where you always know there will be something cool happening.

MARTIN

Diggers Beach locals, the Martin Brothers have started to make their mark on the Grom Surfing World the last few years with big results in some of the top grom comps in the country. Currently, li le brother Luca Martin, aged 13, is ranked No.1 nationally on the Surfing Australia Rankings in the under 14’s and he’s pu ing the work in to stay on top.

Hey Luca. Can you share a bit about how you first discovered your love of surfing?

I started surfing really young, about 4 years old, because my brother is three years older than me and he was always in the water and we would spend many hours together at the beach. I find the ocean really peaceful, it’s definitely my happy place, whether I’m swimming or surfing or fishing, I just love being in and around the water.

Growing up around Coffs, what have been some of your favourite surf spots?

We lived at Diggers until last year and so that’s my home-break but when there’s swell my favourite surf spots are the boat ramp and north wall reef, but it’s hard to beat pumping

Macauleys when it’s big off the point. You have been a part of Coffs Harbour Boardriders for a long time now, what do you enjoy about being involved?

I joined when I was 4 because my brother was already a member and it was so much fun just being there and hanging with mates and having all the older crew around. It was a good warm up for doing events and learning how to surf heats.

You have made a move recently to further your experience in surfing, can you tell us about that?

We moved up to the Gold Coast last year to join the Sporting Excellence Program at Palm Beach Currumbin High School and it’s meant that Will and I get to surf as part of school and also represent the school at events. It’s a really cool program and I’ve made lots of

good mates. Plus, we’re living on the hill at D’bah so I get to surf D’bah and Snapper pretty much every day.

What’s the best thing about surfing in comps?

The best thing about surf comps is that you have a whole crew of mates there from all around the country who you sometimes only see at the comps. It gives you a chance to push yourself against some of the best kids and also just free surf and hang out and have fun. It’s always an amazing feeling to get good results, especially if you’re surfing in really good conditions and feel like you’re in rhythm with the waves.

You have Billabong and some other cool sponsors, how did that come about?

My brother got sponsored by Billabong when he was 9 and it became my dream as well. I

was lucky enough to get some good results and have them ask me to join the team in 2022. One of my other main sponsors is JR Surfboards, a surfboard company up on the Gold Coast. I’ve been riding their boards since I started surfing.

I surf every day, a couple of times a day usually if it's good, and I get some coaching and do some fitness training as well.
e best thing about surf comps is that you have a whole crew of mates there from all around the country who you sometimes only see at the comps.

Can you tell us about some recent events you’ve taken part in?

There’s been heaps of events already this year, I got a win at the start of the year at the Julian Wilson comp on the Sunny Coast and then had some good results at some of the bigger ranked events, with a 3rd over in WA at the Taj Small Fries, 2nd at the Parko Grom comp on the Sunshine Coast and also a 2nd at the Rip Curl Grom Comp in Coffs in April.

What have been some of your proudest achievements in surfing so far?

Probably going to the Aussie Titles for the first time last year when I was still only 12.

Aussie Titles were at Phillip Island last year, it changes states each year, and I’ve never surfed in such freezing conditions. My brother and I represented PBC (Palm Beach Currumbin High School) in the MR Shield and we won an Aussie title which was really special. Surfing in comps is usually always just yourself, so to win together as a team was really cool.

Have you got any events coming up that you’re currently preparing for?

There’s a big few weeks coming up with the Billabong Occy Grom Comp at the end of the month in the Gold Coast, which rolls straight

into the Skull Candy grom comp in Lennox and I also have my second round of the state titles coming up, to qualify for the Aussie Titles at the end of the year.

How do you usually prepare for an event?

I surf every day, a couple of times a day usually if it's good, and I get some coaching and do some fitness training as well. But I don’t really change what I do in the lead up to an event.

What are some of your goals for the future?

My goals are to stay at No1 on the Aussie Rankings for as long as I can, to go on some really cool surf trips to places like the Mentawai’s, to win an Aussie Title and to one day represent Australia at the World Junior Championships.

The long-term dream is to be on the World Surfing Tour!

Thanks Luca.

Introducing

…Dr Elizabeth Flores Westreicher

Imoved to Coffs Harbour from the Blue Mountains and I am enjoying the warm weather, beaches and exploring the natural environment where we live. I am very happy that I have had this opportunity to make Coffs Harbour my home and I have enjoyed being at Welcome Dental, working alongside professional and caring people and being able to assist our patients. I can definitely say that Coffs Harbour is now my home!

Dentistry has always been a part of my life. Some of my earliest memories as a child were sitting at my father’s dental practice in Peru where he would let me play with the plastic teeth and the safest tools you could find. I thank my father who is now retired for introducing me to the profession. As I grew up and during my schooling years he would help educate me on dental procedures and

different materials he used at the surgery. By the end of high school I decided to attend the School of Dentistry in Peru where I gained my qualification in 2003. I then had my own dental clinic before moving to Australia in 2008.

A lot of people always ask me what I love about my job, my answer to that is: I always enjoy helping to create and restore smiles. I really enjoy helping people and improving their confidence and ability to feel more comfortable about themselves. It’s a very rewarding career!

My dental tip for life I always advise our patients is to floss and brush daily, avoid refined sugars, smile as much as you can and come to see us at least once a year!

Outside of work and aside from always working on continuing my professional advancement, I love going for beach walks, swimming, going to the gym, table tennis, cooking and eating healthy meals.

My dental tip for life that I always advise our patients is to floss and brush daily, avoid refined sugars, smile as much as you can and come to see us at least once a year!

Undoubtedly, there is still much more to learn about Dentistry and I’m committed to keep on advancing my knowledge to better be able to assist our patients.

Keaton Devine and Jamie Syme started the Sawtell Men community group a er noticing that many men are struggling with mental health issues, and don’t have the means to engage a health professional, fitness or life coach, and are falling between the gaps.

Hi Keaton. You started Sawtell Men with your good friend Jamie Syme, how did the idea come about?

The idea came about after I had spoken to Jamie about some of my own mental health battles that I had been struggling with. I knew that there were a lot of people who were in similar situations that didn’t have the means to seek professional help or didn’t know where to start. Jamie told me that he had been thinking of doing something similar for a while and we just decided to work together, come up with a plan and set a date. We knew that it would be a service that was greatly needed in the community.

Can you tell us about what the group offers and when and where you usually meet?

The group meets every Friday from 6am-7am at the stairs leading to Murray’s Beach in Sawtell which is about 50m from the Hilltop Cafe. For the hour, we generally spend about 30-40 mins doing different physical activity including circuits, beach walks and swims followed by meeting up at the cafe afterwards for a coffee and a chat/catch-up.

Who is Sawtell Men open to? Can anyone join in?

Sawtell Men is open to all men of all ages and abilities. Everyone is welcome and treated with respect.

Can you share a bit about your background as a military veteran and your own experience with mental health issues and treatment?

I served in the military for approximately 9 years, with about 2 years of that spent throughout the Middle East. My last trip was

almost 10 months and it started to take a toll. Once I was back, a good mate of mine committed suicide and after I returned from his funeral my Dad died. Since that time a number of other mates in defence have also committed suicide. A couple of months after I left was the COVID Pandemic which meant having to isolate at home. I was only recently back to the area after about 10 years living away and didn’t really have much in place in the way of a support network. Not only was I mentally unwell, but I also needed over half a dozen surgeries from injuries I had sustained whilst in Defence and I wasn’t really able to do much in the way of physical activity for the best part of 2 years. All of these things started to pile up and I began to drink heavily daily. I didn’t want to seek support or do anything to help myself. My wife contacted my GP who set up a mental health plan in which I still participate in weekly counselling and from

there I was sent to a mental health hospital in Currumbin where I spent several months. I knew I was extremely lucky to be able to participate in these services which other people don’t have access to, so I wanted to be able to provide some sort of service to others in a similar situation free of charge, and Jamie had the same idea, so we decided to work at it together.

Why do you feel it is important to have a group like Sawtell Men locally?

I believe it is important to have a group like this locally because throughout conversations with others, it was evident there was really no community group or outlet for men wanting not only to work on their physical health, but to have a supportive and confidential space to be able to discuss issues or problems that they are going through in their personal lives. Simply by centreing your day around some form of physical activity, every aspect of your life can improve dramatically.

Jamie has a background as a professional athlete and fitness coach, how do you think these skills benefit the group sessions?

All of these things started to pile up and I BEGAN TO DRINK HEAVILY DAILY. I DIDN’T WANT TO SEEK SUPPORT or do anything to help myself.

Jamie has over 20 years experience in the fitness industry as an athlete, business owner, coach and instructor. His ability to work with a range of people of varying fitness levels and backgrounds, from the average trainer to the professional athlete makes him an amazing asset to the group. Jamie has both played and coached Rugby Union from club to international level, having worked with professional clubs such as the All Blacks. Jamie is well versed in training at the individual and group level and always conducts his interactions with empathy and respect. Having moved to Australia from Scotland 3 years ago with his family, Jamie has quickly established himself as a respected member of the local community as both a business owner at Mission Training Sawtell as well as the Coach

Being able to meet regularly in a safe and supportive environment, and not only work on physical but mental health has been very rewarding.

of the Coffs Snappers rugby union team. Jamie has a passion for helping others with no expectations and understands the benefits of physical activity for not only an individual's physical health but mental health also.

What has some of the feedback from the community been like so far?

The feedback from the community has been fantastic. The group took off a lot faster than we thought. I believe that a lot of people saw the gap between having no support and professional medical/mental health support, so it was an area that needed to be filled. In conversation, people have also expressed that they don’t always have the funds available to seek professional support such as a GP or Mental Health Support Worker or even a fitness club membership, so providing the service free of charge was always a goal. A number of people have also told us that they have recently moved to the area, or even been here for a number of years, and due to busy family lives, partners, children and work,

they find it difficult to make friends or meet people. Seeing guys chatting, introducing themselves and just having a good time is awesome to see.

What do you enjoy about meeting regularly with the group?

The best part about the group is being able to connect with like minded individuals who are also passionate about the local community, men’s mental health and physical fitness. Being able to meet regularly in a safe and supportive environment, and not only work on physical but mental health has been very rewarding. Receiving feedback from people who have attended as well as other members of the community including partners and friends reinforces the fact that this is a group that is benefiting both individuals and the community.

Where can we find out more or get in touch?

The best way to get in touch is through our Facebook Page ‘Sawtell Men’. You can contact us through messenger or our phone numbers are also available on the page. Alternatively, simply come on Friday at 6am and there will be somebody there rain, hail or shine.

Thanks Keaton

Becoming

Becoming U is a Uniting NSW.ACT’s place-based initiative that centres on youth-led projects that lean into the unique and rich circumstances of communities in the Nambucca Valley (Bowraville, Nambucca Heads, and Macksville) and Toormina.

At the centre of the Becoming U Toormina initiative lies the Bongil Bongil Youth Collective (BBYC), a diverse cohort of young individuals, a broad range of local organisations and community partners. The aim of the BBYC is to foster a sense of belonging and empowerment, strengthening individuals and communities so that young people can thrive. Working closely with Jaanymili Girrwawaa Community Hub, Grow The Music Studio, Toormina Community Library, and Boambee East Community Centre, we collaborate to promote youth engagement and personal development.

The BBYC is the focal point for six youth-led projects. This dynamic collective spearheads project design and delivery through close collaboration with stakeholders ensuring the development of inclusive and sustainable projects that leave a lasting impact in Toormina.

At the helm of the BBYC is our Project Advisory Group. Comprised of community members, they steer projects towards community-led governance, integrating shared decision-making processes, youth perspectives,

and alignment with local priorities. Recently, we held our first Table 2452, a dinner designed to celebrate families, community members and key stakeholders. Around 80 people attended the event and it was an incredible measure of the community’s interest and a direct response to a community need. Young people worked with BBYC staff to cook and serve delicious pasta, share artwork and play games. If you missed out that’s ok, Table 2452 will be held monthly at the Toormina Community Centre.

The program gets young people moving, engaging socially, and achieving personal and collective goals.

Other successful projects include Move It facilitated by Community Engagement Officer Heather Duncan. The program gets young people moving, engaging socially, and achieving personal and collective goals. It offers morning fitness sessions at William Baldon Public School, ‘Flamin’ Hoops’ 3-on-3 basketball, CrossFit, NAIDOC touch football, fishing, golf and creative dance.

Another successful project is the Birrugan Bros. It was established by a group of Aboriginal boys and young men, symbolising collective identity and cultural security. Led by Kev Dumas, the project prioritises the well-being of local male First Nations youth through culturally responsive initiatives. So far, the program has achieved significant success with the writing and recording of the Birrugan Bros music track. Other successful initiatives include the facilitation of On Country Excursions and a co-designed ‘Bro Speak’ program for First Nations students in the Bongil Bongil Community of Schools.

With so many unique and engaging activities to be a part of, if you’re aged between 12 and 24 and you live in Toormina or the 2452 area I strongly urge you to reach out to the BBYC and get involved because I can promise you there really is something for everyone.

Becoming U Toormina and the Bongil Bongil Youth Collective

If you’re aged between 12 and 24 and you live in Toormina or the 2452 area you are invited to attend the many activities that are on offer so get involved as there is something for everyone.

DEALING WITH

DIFFICULT TIMES

OVER THE PAST FEW MONTHS, OUR COMMUNITY HAS BEEN FACED WITH ONE CRISIS AFTER ANOTHER.

And just when we thought, we had experienced enough, with a global pandemic, economic uncertainty, political and social turmoil, as well as an array of natural disasters in our region, there have also been personal traumas that people are also dealing with, such as the loss of a loved one, declining health, unemployment, divorce, violent crime, or tragic accidents. For many of us, this is a time of unprecedented struggle and upheaval which can lead to stress.

What is stress?

When faced with a challenging situation or stressful event, our bodies respond by activating the nervous system and releasing hormones including cortisol and adrenalin. These hormones bring about certain physical changes in the body, helping us to react appropriately and deal with the challenge presented. However, if the stress is ongoing and the physical changes do not subside, we may feel overwhelmed and unable to cope.

LIFE PRESSURES THAT CAN CAUSE US TO FEEL OVERWHELMED AND STRESSED INCLUDE:

• Relationship difficulties

• Family breakdown

• Illness or injury

• Work pressures or job loss

• Bullying and harassment

• Traumatic events

• Death of a loved one - including pets

• Financial difficulties

• Homelessness

• Lack of support and isolation

PEOPLE RESPOND DIFFERENTLY TO STRESSFUL

SITUATIONS

WHAT ARE THE SIGNS OF STRESS?

BELOW ARE SOME OF THE SIGNS WHICH INDICATE OUR STRESS LEVELS ARE UNHEALTHY:

• Feeling overwhelmed and unable to cope

• Feeling hyperalert and anxious

• Difficulty sleeping

• Changes in appetite

• Headaches and muscle tension

• Upset stomach • Irritability

• Difficulty concentrating

• Changes in mood

• Fatigue and exhaustion

• Withdrawing from friends and family

• Thoughts of suicide

• Reliance on alcohol or other substances to cope

Responses to stress will be determined by the situation faced, past experiences, personality, social support, access to resources and cultural background. What one person finds stressful, another may be more easily able to cope with.

Knowing yourself and how you respond to different situations is important as you can then learn to manage stress and seek help when necessary.

WHAT TO DO WHEN FEELING OVERWHELMED?

BELOW ARE SOME PRACTICAL STRATEGIES FOR MANAGING STRESS WHEN FEELING OVERWHELMED BY LIFE PRESSURES

• Identify the cause of your stress — write down what is contributing to you feeling overwhelmed and stressed. You may identify one particular issue or have a range of things contributing to how you feel at this time. Prioritise the issues and leave smaller issues to be dealt with at a later time.

• Review your current coping mechanisms — identify how you have been coping to date. What tools and strategies have you found helpful? What things are you doing that are not helpful? Make any necessary changes to increase your ability to cope.

• Talk to a trusted friend or family member — talking through your issues with someone you trust can assist you to work through the issue and identify possible solutions.

• Check your thinking — often we put pressure on ourselves to be a certain way. Our thoughts directly impact our emotional state and can influence our behaviour. When our thoughts are negative and self-critical we may begin to feel overwhelmed. Instead of doing the things we need to do in order to deal with the stressful situation, we may in fact do things that are unhelpful.

Give yourself some positive feedback for

the things you have been doing to manage. Consider if the expectations you place on yourself are reasonable and adjust them accordingly. Demonstrate compassion to yourself as you would to others in a similar situation.

• Make a positive plan — work out ways to deal with the situation or how to approach it step by step. Write down the actions that need to be taken to bring about some change. Start at the beginning and focus on one thing at a time. Recognise when you need help to bring about change.

• Take care of yourself — we need to be healthy in order to meet life’s challenges. Eating well, exercising, and getting plenty of sleep are the basic building blocks of resilience. Take time out to engage in activities you enjoy and find rewarding. Engage in positive relationships with friends and family.

• Access local support services — there may be certain situations when you need to gain support from services in the community. For example, you may need to access counselling services when experiencing family and relationship difficulties or accommodation services if experiencing homelessness or domestic violence.

WHERE TO GO FOR SUPPORT?

If you are in need of support, you may consider talking to your GP or health professional about your current situation. Your GP can check your general health and assess any physical signs of stress. They can refer you to local health professionals based on your needs or visit the Lifeline Service Finder Directory at https://www.lifeline.org. au/get-help/ service-finder to search for local services and centres in your area. Below are some of the places to go for information and support:

• Phone Lifeline on 13 11 14 (available 24/7) or chat to a Crisis Supporter online at lifeline.org.au (7pm – midnight every night)

• Mensline Australia: 1300 78 99 78 (24hrs)

• Kids Helpline: 1800 55 1800

It is important to be able to identify when stress is affecting us in a negative way. Identifying the cause of our stress and making changes where possible is a good starting point.

THE SOL

COLLECTIVE

enna, you are the new owner of Sol Collective, what do you bring to this and what is your background?

I have been offering a combination of yoga, energy and sound healing since 2016, because the benefits of these holistic therapies helped me get through my own battles with mental illness. I am passionate about creating a space for anyone and everyone to come and feel safe, connected and equip them with the tools they can use to feel the same peace I have found using these practices. I began my practice in 2008 for the physical benefits, and when I felt the benefits of the practice ripple into all areas of my life, I knew I had to learn more about it. I have since completed over 650 hours of training in yoga, energy therapy and sound healing and continue to train and learn because for me, this is a way of life, not just

a business. I hope to bring my passion, love and deep gratitude for this practice to the Sol community, so that more people can feel the power of these ancient wisdoms and connect with like minded people.

Besides classes, what else does Sol Collective offer?

I’m lucky enough to step into a well established, beautiful community at Sol. On top of our regular yoga and pilates classes we offer regular sound healings, private sessions, retreats (internationally and locally) corporate yoga, breathwork workshops, ecstatic dance, circles, mums and babies events, courses and many more special events. Our space is open to everyone to come and receive and also if they have an event in alignment with our values we offer

MONDAY HEALTH

Naturopath & Clinical Nutritionist

What is Monday Health all about? When someone plans to make positive changes to their health they will often pick a day or a date that they will aim to start, such as after a party, after a holiday, or on a Monday after their plans for the weekend, and that’s the inspiration for the name!

As a naturopath I want to be one of the people to help someone to make those changes, which can often be as simple as some

dietary and lifestyle adjustments or may also incorporate nutritional and herbal medicine therapies. My clinic is open Monday-Thursday and appointments can be made either by phone or emailing me, or via my website, and I also offer online consultations if needed. What qualifications and experience do you bring to your business? I have worked for almost fifteen years within the industry with the past four years being in private clinical practice and I have a special interest in women’s health. My education includes a

Health Science Degree in Clinical Nutrition, with Advanced Diplomas in Naturopathy and Western Herbal Medicine. As a member of both the Australian Traditional Medicine Society and the Naturopaths & Herbalists Association of Australia I am required to complete ongoing professional education annually in order to remain accredited.

In regard to experience, it is important to mention that there have been some amazing people who have mentored me in the last few years, and their knowledge and guidance has been an integral part of my professional growth, for which I am so grateful.

Why do you thing natural therapies are so important? I think that natural therapies are important because they address the whole person, and provide support for the fundamental things that the body needs to thrive. We are extremely fortunate on the Mid North Coast to have so many options when it comes to holistic care and as the saying goes it really can “take a village” to help a person achieve whatever it may be they are aiming for, and I love being a part of that community.

Counselling

CONVERSATIONS

with JULIE THOMAS

FROM BEYOND THE SURFACE COUNSELLING

All behaviour is communication. It is how we act or behave in a situation or under different conditions. We all communicate through our behaviour in different ways, depending on the context. When observing behaviour it is beneficial to remember that we need to look beyond the surface of what the person is doing. Behavioural communication involves the interaction between the person, their specific situation, their environment, and the other people around them. There is always a reason for the way we behave.

Behaviours at times may appear to be challenging to manage, however, we don’t intentionally go out of our way to be difficult, challenging or problematic. Behaviours usually build up over time however sometimes behaviour may appear out of nowhere, but that is not the case. Challenging behaviour often indicates that a person is unregulated and unable to cope with the situation, environment or a specific person. When challenging behaviour is observed often, the individual is not able to express themselves in a calm and appropriate manner and that is

nder anding

Behaviour

why they are behaving in this way. It is often the high demand of the situation, environment, or person that exceeds a person’s ability and skills to respond in appropriate ways. This is influenced by how the person feels, what the antecedent was (this is what has happened before) and what is happening around them at the time.

It is helpful to remember that it is the behaviour that is challenging, not the person, and there is a reason for the behaviour.

The impacts of these behaviours are challenging for both the person and the people around them. Challenging behaviour usually has two main functions, to get or to get away from something such as an activity, item, or sensation like a noise, aroma, feeling, attention, or a person. To reduce or eliminate the behaviour we need to first understand the purpose of the behaviour. To understand why it happens we need to consider the contributing factors such as the person’s skills, the environment, expectations, and the other people in the situation. It is helpful to remember that it is the behaviour that is challenging, not the person, and there is a reason for the behaviour.

Often looking through the lens of the Iceberg Model of behaviour is a helpful and insightful

strategy for understanding the multifaceted nature of human behavioural actions. Like an iceberg, where only 10% is visible above water, human behaviour is only partially observed. What we observe is only a portion of the iceberg or the person, often we do not see the emotional, social, cultural, and other factors that lie beneath the surface and may cause the behaviour.

Using the Iceberg method is a great tool to unpack personal relationship problems and practice self-awareness. The iceberg method places the responsibility back on you and your behaviour. It does not excuse your behaviour but is a useful way to identify personal triggers, increasing your self-awareness. It can also be used to process and identify emotions, and conflict and be used as a self-reflection model on ways to repair ruptures in relationships. Over time you may begin to identify your patterns of behaviour and the triggers or purpose of your behaviour. Identifying the patterns will assist you in understanding your behaviours, frequency and severity of any escalations and may help you in your selfregulation development.

Until next time, be kind and gentle with yourself.

Often we forget what good health feels like, and we will accept a vague collection of symptoms such as exhaustion, foggy thinking, stubborn weight gain, difficulty sleeping, and craving coffee, sugar and salt. Or maybe put up with symptoms of hormonal imbalance such as heavy or irregular periods, chronic and debilitating period pain, sluggish metabolism, bloating, acne, low libido, anxiety, constipation or night sweats. It is all too easy to put it down to either being busy, stressed, or even ageing. But it really doesn’t have to be that way. If you feel like your hormones are running your life, then you may need support.

Taking a holistic, caring and personal approach, I can work with you to discover the underlying cause and then support you with targeted herbal and nutritional medicine to achieve hormonal harmony.

We all love our beautiful, heated pool and I enjoy water aerobics and yoga; mind you, I might look a bit funny sometimes, but I absolutely love it! Whatever makes you happy you can do or at least try to do because we’re all in the same boat.

We lived in a very big house and there was just too much work to do. We decided it was time to downsize and look forward in our lives, not backward. Our journey began 5 years ago when we started looking at some relatives that were older than us and observing how life was going for them. We went to the Retirement Expo and learned all about the different options and decided exactly what we wanted. We looked from the Hunter River to southern Queensland and went to work weighing

Get ahead of frailty with a life plan

e COVID-19 pandemic gave us all a sneak peek into what life might be like if we lost independence and mobility.

But what if the limitations were not due to an international pandemic and were not affecting everyone in your street, but just you? What if it was your own personal capacity (physical or mental frailty) that was restricting your independence?

Many retirees live independent lives, but research shows that on average, you might expect 17-25% of your retirement years to be frailty years.*

While this may sound grim, it is not all bad. Just don’t let frailty creep up on you without a plan.

What’s in the plan?

A plan can give you time to identify your choices, make comparisons and prioritise your preferences. It may give you time to modify your house to remain suitable for longer. Or it may allow you to put your support teams in place to be ready when you need them. And most importantly, it may allow you to have the finances ready to pay for the support you need.

A well-considered plan can also reduce stress for your family who may be faced with trying to decide the best options for you while dealing with their own emotions and busy lives. A plan can give them a roadmap to follow.

Not everything goes our way or even how we planned. But having a plan which considers options and decision pathways is better than no plan at all.

So how do you get started? Make a list of what is important to you and how you want to live. This includes your views on:

1. Your personal life goals

2. Your home and how you prefer to live

3. Your family interactions

4. Your financial objectives

5. Medical treatment and care directives.

Who can help?

Don’t build the plan alone. It is hard to be objective. You may also need to bring in experts such as your doctor, a lawyer and an accredited aged care financial planner. Searching the internet might provide ideas for

how to draw up a life plan, support groups and interesting newsletters.

Once you have a plan, discuss it with your family and give them a chance to have input or help you view the plan more objectively. Including your family in discussions can also help them to understand what is important to you and why.

As an Accredited Aged Care ProfessionalTM, I can provide advice to remove the uncertainty and help you choose the best strategy for you if your plan involves accessing aged care support. If you want to talk through your options or find out more information for your situation, call my office on 0431 414 799 to find out how I might help.

This advice is general in nature and everyone’s circumstances are different. So it’s important to speak to someone like myself who is a licensed financial adviser (I am an Authorised Representative of Count Financial Limited AFSL 227232).

and Striving Excellence FOR

BISHOP DRUITT COLLEGE SHOWCASES

ACHIEVEMENTS AND OPPORTUNITIES

With the Olympic Games 2024 just around the corner, the world’s focus will soon turn to France, celebrating themes of excellence and athletes striving for their personal best.

The Olympic motto “Citius, Altius, Fortius” (Swifter, Higher, Stronger), borrowed by Baron de Coubertin from a school principal, Father Henri Martin Dideono, captures the spirit of aiming for one’s personal best, a principle deeply cherished at Bishop Druitt College.

At BDC, we embody this Olympic spirit by providing numerous opportunities inside and outside the classroom. The following articles showcase our commitment to excellence and the unique opportunities we offer. It should be noted that all these highlights have taken place only since May this year.

Ethics Olympiad - Gold, Gold, Gold!

Our BDC team, comprising Kiara, Jack, Campbell, and Digby, triumphed at the NSW Ethics Olympiad, defeating top Sydney schools like North Sydney Boys High and Scots College. The Ethics Olympiad provides schools and universities a unique opportunity to develop critical thinking, collaboration and communication skills. It is designed to get students thinking and ultimately working together on some of the tough moral issues of our time. Their victory propels them to the Nationals, a testament to our students’ mental agility and analytical and ethical reasoning skills.

Performing Arts - A Stage for Excellence!

Our students dazzled at the Coffs Harbour Eisteddfod, excelling in categories ranging from Dance to Drama to Choirs and to Instrumental Music.

At BDC, we embody this Olympic spirit by providing numerous opportunities inside and outside the classroom.

Our College Musical “The Little Mermaid Jr” was critically acclaimed as one of the top performances in this region by a youth ensemble in many years. Notably, Ella’s selection to represent Australia in Musical Theatre in the USA exemplifies the high-performance opportunities available at BDC.

The Kokoda Challenge - Building Character and Community

This year, 10 BDC teams participated in the 30km and 48km Kokoda Challenge, embodying the pillars of ‘courage’, ‘endurance’, ‘mateship’, and ‘sacrifice’. Such events are not just about personal achievement but also about community support and team building, reflecting the legacy of our Aussie Diggers.

Sporting Excellence - Partnerships and Achievements

BDC boasts robust community partnerships and offers exceptional sporting opportunities

through tours and state and national competitions. Our collaborations with NSW Rugby, North Coast Basketball, various golf clubs and more ensures our students excel in sports academies and highperformance programs.

Just last month, Amaia and Daniel competed for Australia in the Oceania Championships in Fiji, with Daniel winning Gold in the 1500m, and this followed his Commonwealth top 4 placing in Trinidad and Tobago earlier in the year.

Join Us at Bishop Druitt College

We invite you to join the BDC community as we celebrate these achievements and embrace the Olympic values of striving for our best. Our commitment to excellence in academics, arts, sports, and character-building ensures that every student can achieve their personal best. Visit our website, schedule a Principal’s Tour, or contact us today to learn how we can help your child achieve their personal best in this supportive and dynamic environment. You don’t need to move to a major centre to get the best education, and BDC is proof of that!

KOKODA henge

Can you tell us about your motivation for participating in the Kokoda Challenge as a charity event? The Kokoda Endurance Event, starting on the Gold Coast in 2004, ignited my passion when I first joined four Year 12 girls in the 96km race in 2010. Since then, I've returned multiple times. This event challenges both physically and mentally, with deep historical significance from the overlooked yet crucial Kokoda Battle in Australian military history. Students learn its importance and fundraise to support youth trekking the Kokoda Track in Papua New Guinea. At BDC, we've introduced this event, now in its third iteration, with 30km and 48km challenges that foster community bonds through teamwork, fundraising, and completing the race. Watching students surpass their limits and achieve daunting goals is inspiring, impacting their fitness, mental health, community involvement, purpose, and social ties, benefiting both students and teachers involved. How do you plan to balance your teaching responsibilities with the training required for the Kokoda challenge?

I created the 'Perseverance Prove it' subject at BDC for Years 5-8. Students choose from over 20 subjects each semester based on their interests. In this subject, students prepare for the 30km or 48km Kokoda Brisbane Event, learning Kokoda's history and values of Courage, Endurance, Mateship, and Sacrifice. Together with their

teammates and teachers, they build bonds and teamwork skills to aim for a 100% completion rate at the finish line.

What impact do you hope to make through your participation in the Kokoda challenge?

I aim for this event to inspire students, showing them the Kokoda Challenge can lead to incredible achievements with effort and support. It fosters self-belief, resilience, determination, grit, and endurance. Funds we raise benefit the Kokoda Challenge Youth Program, teaching students to communicate and raise awareness about the Kokoda battle's impact on Australia with family and friends.

remarkable $14,000.

How do you think participating in the Kokoda challenge will enhance your skills as a teacher?

Together with their teammates and teachers, they build bonds and teamwork skills to aim for a 100% completion rate at the finish line.

We all know that to be great at most things in life we need to have great relationships with others. This event is all about creating a strong relationship with your team members. Building a positive rapport with our students is so important, this event helps teachers and students bond outside the classroom. On the track we are all equal, supporting each other while having our challenges on the day.

How will you involve your students in your fundraising efforts for the charity?

As a class, we discussed what they thought was the most successful way to raise money. Students agreed on a whole school BBQ. We also negotiated with local businesses and everything for the BBQ was donated. We are thankful to The Gray family from school who donated the sausages, our bread from Northside Bakery and all the drinks from those competing in the event. We also had a free dress day followed by a bake sale. The students and the community raised a

Can you share any strategies you have in mind to raise awareness about the charity and the Kokoda challenge among your students and the wider community?

Last year, we had 4 teams, but this year, we've grown to 10 teams, sparking great excitement among our staff and students for 2025. This year, I aim to kickstart preparations for the 2025 event by disseminating information to our students, teachers, and parents during Term 4, with plans to expand involvement, particularly among our Year 9 and 10 students, in the coming years.

CHRISTABEL MARTIN

and

Hi Ella, can you tell us about your experience in the performing arts industry?

Certainly! My journey began with dance. I competed in eisteddfods from age 8, starting solo competitions at 10. Today, I compete in diverse dance styles. My introduction to musical theatre was in "The Wizard of Oz", playing Dorothy. I've enjoyed various roles learning leadership in "Moana Jr.," versatility in "Frozen Jr.," and character depth in "The Wizard of Oz Jr.," character relationships in "Tuck Everlasting Jr.," and played a lead role as Ariel in "The Little Mermaid Jr." I've thrived in rock musicals like "School of Rock" and mastered choreography in "Cats".

What is the Australian Junior Music Theatre?

The festival, produced by OzTheatrics in partnership with iTheatrics in NY and MTI in Australasia, is the largest annual celebration of musical theatre for young people in Australia.

What was the criteria to gain selection and what does it involve?

Ella Chowdhury

Ella Chowdhury has been selected to represent Australia in America for the Junior Musical Theatre Festival. We had a chat with Ella to find out more…

The selection involved entering with our 15-member group production. By doing the Aussie All-stars auditions at the Newcastle Junior Theatre Festival, myself and five other students of Woolgoolga Performing Arts Studio were lucky to be selected out of thousands where only 30 were selected. We're now fundraising for the trip, updates are on Instagram or Facebook at coffscoast_wpas_allstars.

Their love, support, and expertise shaped me as an actor, dancer, and singer. I am forever grateful for their encouragement.

What other projects are you working on?

I'm working on Woolgoolga Performing Arts Studios' commercial dance production "BILLIE," a 75-minute show inspired by Billie Eilish's music. Additionally, I recently secured roles in CHMCC's musical "We Will Rock You," directed by Greg Wilson Jr. and codirected by Rebecca Nicholson.

Where do you see yourself in 5 or 10 years?

In 5-10 years, I envision completing my final years at a prestigious performing arts school,

developing a strong arts community network, booking significant stage roles, and establishing myself as a professional performer.

Who inspires you? I am inspired by my teachers, inside and outside of school

including Jade Naidu, Tegan Hayley, Hayley Evans, Billie-Jo Dukes, Katie Gudgeon, Rachel Crismale, Kate Freeman, and Hannah Johnson. Their love, support, and expertise shaped me as an actor, dancer, and singer. I am forever grateful for their encouragement. What advice would you give to those looking to get into the industry?

My advice for entering the performing arts is to be open to trying new things, participate in workshops and productions, and don’t hesitate to start training. With passion and commitment, you can achieve your goals and have a fulfilling career in the performing arts. Thanks Ella.

CThe Ethics Olympiad

L:R - CAMBLE SCOTT, DIGBY GREENAWAY, KIARAH GRAY, JACK EASTER

an you tell us about your experience participating in the Ethics Olympiad?

The Ethics Olympiad is a national and international competition where students compete in teams via Zoom. It allows remote and rural schools as well as inner-city students to participate. Students gain experience in public speaking and analyse real-world ethical dilemmas. Unlike debating, participants argue various perspectives on ethical issues, applying philosophical frameworks to explore solutions. Case studies include topics like whether dentists should shame patients into flossing and whether parents who profit from posting children on social media are engaging in slavery. Current debates also cover the ethical use of AI in society. The competition emphasises rational speaking and respectful discourse, teaching participants civil and critical engagement.

How did you prepare for the competition? Did you have any specific strategies or techniques?

In preparation, our team studied various ethical frameworks for responding to case studies. For instance, in the case study "Happy To Be Alone," we examined animal rights ethics and the issue of granting legal personhood, like in

the case of Happy the Elephant in NYC. This case study raised questions about why certain animals, including humans, are prioritised over others, and whether this prioritisation is ethically justified.

What was the most challenging ethical dilemma you faced during the Olympiad? How did you approach it?

One particularly engaging case for our team dealt with religious conversion for marital requirements and societal pressure to conform to a partner in marriage. This topic fascinated us both ethically and personally, especially after discussing it with Mr. Sopheap Yin, founder of BDC’s Cambodian sister school Krou Yeung School. Hearing about how this issue directly impacts people in Cambodia added a practical dimension to our theoretical discussions, which we aim to explore further in the international rounds.

How did you feel when you were announced as the winner of the gold medal?

On competition day, our team focused entirely on collaborating, making the gold announcement a pleasant surprise. It was rewarding to have our hard work and passion for ethical discourse acknowledged. Winning the gold medal means we advance to the

International Round of Ethics Olympiad in July, where we will compete against schools from Australia, NZ, Hong Kong, India, and Singapore. We look forward to the challenge and hope to achieve more medals!

What lessons or values did you learn from participating in the Epic Ethics Olympiad? Where to start?

This contest goes beyond memorisation or vocabulary. It prioritises critical thinking and constructive discourse, skills we developed throughout training and the event itself.

Learning to form and refine opinions through respectful interaction and learning from others is crucial and challenging to teach, yet essential to learn. Events like these are valuable not just for ethics enthusiasts but for everyone, emphasising these important skills.

What advice would you give to other children who are interested in participating in ethics competitions?

Don’t be daunted by lengthy cases and complex questions! With supportive faculty, mastering these cases and frameworks will become natural. Once you grasp how to apply these core ideas, the competition will become easier. You'll always improve from the experience, so take the opportunity. There are more potential gold medallists among us waiting to shine!

Hi Daniel, what was your overall experience like at the Oceania Games and what did you compete in?

I competed in the U18 800m and 1500m events in Fiji. It was really exciting to travel to another country I’d never been to with a large group of like-minded people. It was also eye-opening to see the way of life and personality of the locals.

Can you share any memorable moments or highlights from your time at the games?

It was great to meet new people from the Australian team as well as international athletes from countries such as New Zealand, Fiji and Haiti. One moment that will forever stay with me was when I walked to the local supermarket with a few other athletes and the amount of smiles and greetings we got from the locals.

How did you prepare mentally and physically for the competition?

My training saw a gradual lift in

intensity and volume, keeping the primary focus of speed and my ability to hold it over extended periods. I also took many precautions to minimise the risk of illness and injury leading up to the championships. Mentally I felt I was prepared. I have competed at an international level before and I had raced against most of the competition in both my races in Fiji so I knew their strengths and weaknesses, making it easier to formulate and execute race plans.

Did you have any specific goals or expectations going into the competition, and did you achieve them?

Heading into the championships I was the favourite in both my events, so my initial goal was to take the win in both events. In the 1500m, the goal was to get the win regardless of time and in the 800m, I wanted the win as well as a fast time. I achieved both these goals with the win in both events and an 800m championship record time within a second and a half of my PB.

recently a ended the Oceania Games in athletics.

Amaia, what was your overall experience like at the Oceania Games and what did you compete in?

Going to the Oceania Games was an amazing experience. It was my first international competition, and it was so much fun. Being around athletes from different countries and cultures made the competition even more exciting. I competed in the U18s high`jump and 4x100 relay.

competition as I’ve been splitting my representative and training commitments between AFL and high jump. I do a huge amount of travel to train and compete. It’s always difficult to train for high jump because even a little bit of rain and the grounds are too wet to jump. How did competing at the Oceania Games contribute to your growth as an athlete?

Being around di erent countries and cultures made the competition even more exciting. I competed in the U18s high jump and 4x100 relay.

How did you prepare mentally and physically for the competition?

We were surrounded by amazing athletes, from Olympic gold medallists to people trying to qualify for Paris. It was amazing to perform on such a huge stage. It is very different from competing at home and I think this has made me grow as a person.

CLARENCE VALLEY ANGLICAN SCHOOL is

future

Clarence Valley Anglican School is boosting future planning one career conversation at a time. With continued success in the established Year 10 Futures Program, Clarence Valley Anglican School (CVAS) recognises that students from younger grades are increasingly interested in learning about their own future pathways.

Through establishing connections with the regional university study hub - the Country Universities Centre Clarence Valley (CUCCV), Year 6 students took part in the My Future CV program.

Given the resounding success of the many pastoral rites of passage programs within Stage 3, it was fitting that the students were given the opportunity to enhance their understanding of the world around them, thus increasing engagement and preparedness for Year 7 and beyond.

Students completed a range of qualitative and quantitative activities to measure the success of the My Future CV program for the CVAS

students. Key outcomes included:

• A 25% increase in student awareness of future education and career options (moving from 68% to 93%) and a greater confidence in making decisions about these pathways.

• An increase of 10% of students aiming to attend university.

• Conversations with parents and carers about future pathways increasing in frequency and detail.

CVAS students connected with the medical students, who had also come from regional areas, learning it’s okay not to know what to do straight away.

Central to the My Future CV program was the opportunity for CVAS students to engage with immersive, career opportunities. The existing relationship between the CUCCV and the University of Wollongong (UoW) Graduate Medicine Program enabled CVAS students to participate in a workshop facilitated by the UoW, exploring pathways available within the health and human sciences field.

UoW graduate medicine students discussed their first-hand experiences and journey to undertake study in the medical field. CVAS students connected with the medical students, who had also come from regional areas, learning it’s okay not to know what to do straight away. These personal discoveries will continue to be enhanced through the bespoke Global Choices program and lead seamlessly into the Futures Program, providing the ultimate wrap-around support. CVAS does not limit success to one definition; students are equipped with the skills to finesse their skills into strengths and to champion their own versions of success. The greatest legacy a school can provide is not a report card, but the conversations that help children shape their identity both in and outside of the classroom.

Aquarium Deep Diving Sary

AT THE

Iands

When you talk to a tentacled friend at the Solitary Islands Aquarium, make sure you mind your tone. An octopus that feels slighted can be known to seek revenge. With an ability for facial recognition that could rival your smartphone, you could su er a squirt to the face next time you peer into their tank.

Octopi are just some of the many intriguing creatures of the deep on display at the Solitary Islands Aquarium, located at Southern Cross University’s National Marine Science Centre in Charlesworth Bay. The public aquarium showcases marine life unique to the Coffs Coast, with a focus on community education and engagement.

“Octopi are the amazing Houdinis of the marine world,” says Stephan Soule, Manager of Education and Outreach at the Solitary Islands Aquarium.

“You have to be careful about keeping a lid on your octopi’s tanks because they can crawl out and go for a walk. We did have one get out of a tank once and climb into another tank. I have a much better locking system now,” he laughs.

Stephan’s delight in uncovering the mysteries of marine life stems from his younger years

in the United States, where he undertook an Undergraduate Degree in Marine Science at the University of California, Santa Barbara. Stephan made the most of the California coastline, developing a passion for scuba diving.

“California is famous for its big kelp forests. Some of these kelps can grow a metre a day. So, you get these cathedrals of kelp which you don’t see on the Coffs Coast,” Stephan says.

“Everyone thinks of California as being sunny and tropical but the water is actually quite cold due to a cold-water current, whereas the Coffs Coast gets the best of both worlds.”

The Solitary Islands Marine Park has been heralded as a unique environment for studying marine science due to its location at the intersection of warm-water and coldwater currents. The resulting ‘mixing zone’ is a tapestry of colours and shapes where species from the Great Barrier Reef, such as corals and reef fish, co-exist with temperate

seaweeds, invertebrates and fish from colder environments.

“It’s one of the few places in the world where we have these two marine ecosystems right next to each other, the tropical and temperate,” says Stephan.

This special site of marine wonder made the perfect location for the Solitary Islands Aquarium, which opened in 2009.

“I call it a boutique aquarium because it is intimate and highlights local species. Visitors have a really interactive experience,” says Stephan. “We have such a unique environment here so we can show off this fantastic biodiversity.”

Visitors can get up close with the local wildlife including clownfish, crayfish, sea urchins, lionfish, angelfish, tangs and butterfly fish, with guided tours, feeding activities and a touch tank.

Being part of Southern Cross University,

research into the population of local turban snails which are subject to fishing.

“Every animal has interlocking importance. Removing one animal out of the system can have a cascading effect. It might seem as simple as one snail but it can have quite significant effects on the health of the reef.”

education is a driving force behind the aquarium, with school programs, public lectures and research forming a major part of its operation.

“I love communicating the science and understanding to a broad audience,” says Stephan.

“Information leads to power, and power leads to change. With all of these human pressures on our oceans, I find it imperative to translate that information to the greater community. Hopefully they can take that on board and make changes to their own lives.

“We had a student who picked up all of the rubbish off the beach at Charlesworth Bay for four months. As a result of her work, she found that about 44,000 pieces of rubbish accumulates every year on our little beach, which is only 350 metres wide. People are quite surprised by that.”

The Solitary Islands Aquarium hosts public lectures every three months, spotlighting marine experts as part of the Marine Discovery Series.

“Our most recent lecture included PhD candidate Kate Seinor talking about her

as well as the effects of ocean acidification on marine animals,” says Stephan.

“We pump seawater through the building from the ocean 24 hours a day. We can put the seawater through experimental tanks to better understand what the oceans might be like in 50 to 100 years’ time.”

We asked sta members of Forestry Corporation of NSW to share their favourite NSW State Forests places to visit. Why? Because who knows be er than those who look a er the forest and maintain these special places.

Ste Fore SECRETS

“Gumgali Track in Orara East State Forest doesn’t get as much attention as it deserves and the view is delightful! But my absolute favourite spot is Mobong Falls Track in Wild Cattle Creek State Forest. It’s a great bushwalk beside Mobong Creek, with a beautiful little waterfall and abundant birdlife. You can also enjoy a picnic (there are a couple of tables) or a cheeky little swim.”

- Renee, Forestry Worker

“Coopernook State Forest is one of those places that slowly grows on you with repeated visits. There is so much history there, and I understand why people refer to it as such a peaceful spot. It really is!”

- Leah, Partnerships Leader

“Tirrill Creek in Bulga State Forest. Subtropical rainforest can be found in spots along the creek line, as well as scenic rockpools for splashing your feet in. Pretty special.”

- Mark, Ecologist

“Once a year, we travel with a few other families and stay at Moonan Cottage in the small town of Moonan Brook at the western base of the Barrington Tops. We take day trips to ‘the Tops’ and our must stop places always include Moonan Outlook, with views for days to the south and west and brilliant sunsets. It’s just magic”

- Louise, Manager Tourism & Partnerships

“My favourite site is around Sealy Lookout in Orara East State Forest near Coffs Harbour. It’s not too remote, easy to get to and there’s some great lookouts and walks in unique areas.”

- Owen, Forestry Worker

“I love a bit of fishing, so Koondrook and Perricoota State Forests adjacent to the Murray River down on the Victorian border are always on my list. Great spots for fishing for native fish (Murray Cod and Yellow belly) as well as boating and kayaking. Bermagui State Forest on the NSW South Coast is also excellent for fishing and camping, while Currowan State Forest near Batemans Bay has good bass fishing and canoeing.”

- Rob, Partnerships Leader

“Guulabaa – Place of Koala in Cowarra State Forest between Wauchope and Port Macquarie. It’s so close to the Pacific Highway but still home to a beautiful native forest. It’s also home to WildNets, The Big Koala (part of the Hello Koalas Sculpture Trail) and the soon-to-be-open Wild Koala Breeding Facility managed by Port Macquarie Koala Hospital/Koala Conservation Australia. With picnic facilities and walking trails in development, and Bunyah Café coming soon too (thanks to Bunyah Local Aboriginal Land Council), this tourism precinct is a must-stop for any visitors to the Mid North Coast.”

- Kathy, Senior Manager Country & Community

BUDGET Wk

Budget week is usually the busiest week on the parliamentary calendar. MPs are frantically reading through the reams of budget papers to get an understanding of where money is being spent, and, increasingly for regional NSW, where it’s being cut.

This budget week was even busier than usual. I was given the tremendous honour to have been elected as the new Deputy Leader of the NSW Nationals by my colleagues.

I would like to express my profound gratitude to Bronnie Taylor for her unwavering dedication to the people of NSW. As a member of the Legislative Council, a Minister, and the previous Deputy Leader of the National Party, Bronnie has been an exceptional mentor, colleague, and friend. Her commitment has set a high standard, and her shoes will be large to fill. However, I am inspired by her example and eager to build on the strong foundation she has laid.

Since my election as the Member for Coffs Harbour in 2019, I have dedicated myself to championing our community and ensuring that

regional NSW receives its fair share of attention and resources.

My journey to this role is steeped in a diverse background where agriculture runs through my veins, a legacy handed down by my grandfather, a farmer on the North Coast. This deep-rooted connection to the land and its people has shaped my approach to leadership and advocacy.

Regional NSW, the backbone of our state, faces a unique set of challenges. From the fluctuating fortunes of our coastal communities, heavily reliant on tourism, to the ever-present threats of natural disasters, the need for strong representation has never been greater. In this additional role, I am committed to continuing the fight for these communities, ensuring they are not just heard, but actively supported. Looking ahead, I am excited to collaborate

STATE

closely with our party leader Dugald Saunders, Sarah Mitchell, our Leader in the Upper House, and all my colleagues within the Nationals and Liberals Coalition. Our united goal is clear: to prioritise the needs and aspirations of the people of regional NSW.

In this additional role, I am commi ed to continuing the fight for these communities, ensuring they are not just heard, but actively supported.

The role of Deputy Leader comes with significant responsibilities, not least of which is to ensure that our regional communities feel supported and valued within our state’s political landscape. Having worked in various careers, and now having served in Parliament for over 5 years, I bring a diverse range of experiences to the role which helps me understand issues from varied perspectives. This role is more than a position; it is a commitment to serve and to listen. Thank you for your trust, support, and the opportunity to serve my community.

It’s an ever changing environment and the goal posts constantly move. I love the fast pace of the industry and that you have to have your wits about you, all the time. Commercial real estate isn’t for the faint hearted, that’s for sure.

I also get great satisfaction from protecting my clients and crafting deals that satisfy all parties. It helps that I love problem solving!

COMMERCIAL PROPERTY SPECIALISTS

Who is your greatest influence in business? Without a doubt it’s my clients.  They’re business owners themselves, who face and overcome challenges everyday. All of them are inspiring people who encourage me each step of the way, and who certainly don’t hesitate to kick me in the butt when I need it. Most have become very dear friends, who I hold in the highest regard.

What do you love about living and working on the Coffs Coast? Definitely the people! We truly have some epic humans here on the coast, who kick goals in the business world. I’m always inspired by the other local business owners in this town. I take my hat off to you guys. It’s a tough gig running a business - and you deserve a bucket load of credit for surviving some of the toughest years yet.

What piece of advice would you give women making their way in the business world?

I’ve been lucky enough to have some great mentors along the way and now also being able to mentor others. So the first piece of advice would be to get a mentor and a confidant you can trust.

Over the years I’ve picked up quite a few pieces of advice along the way and used it in my own

business.

Trust yourself and always always back yourself. Don’t quit - especially on the days you feel like it. Sometimes you will be your only cheer squadso make sure you clap so loud, people look over and want to join the fun!

Burn the bridge to plan B - so you have no choice but to make plan A work. Then never ever look back! Rip off the rear view mirror and keep your eyes on the road ahead.

Make time for family and friends, but most importantly for your mental and physical health. Because burn-out is a bitch. Avoid it like the plague by looking after yourself.

Keep your ego in check - always. Be authentic and don’t be afraid to ask for help. It’s okay not to be okay. Equally, it’s okay to cry.

The answer is always yes when it comes to champagne. You’ve got this!!

Maximising the selling price of your home on the picturesque Coffs Coast involves understanding and leveraging several key factors. Whether you’re preparing to sell or looking to enhance your home’s marketability over time, focusing on these essential elements can help you optimise your sale price.

Location: The Coffs Coast offers diverse neighbourhoods, each with its own appeal. Properties near beaches, amenities and good schools tend to command higher prices due to their convenience and desirable lifestyle.

Property Condition: A well-maintained home with updated features and a fresh appearance is more attractive to buyers. Consider minor repairs, renovations, and a fresh coat of paint to enhance your home’s appeal and justify a higher asking price.

Curb Appeal: First impressions matter greatly. Enhance your home’s exterior with landscaping, tidy pathways, and a well-maintained facade to make it more inviting and increase its perceived value.

Interior Design: Modern, neutral interiors with ample natural light appeal to a wider range of buyers. Staging your home effectively can highlight its potential and create an inviting atmosphere that resonates with prospective buyers.

Local Market Knowledge: Partnering with a knowledgeable local high performing real estate agent who understands the Coffs Coast dynamics can provide valuable insights and strategic guidance from property presentation, marketing, buyer inspections, negotiations through to settlement.

appliances, solar, insulation, and lighting not only reduces utility bills but also appeals to environmentally-conscious buyers, potentially boosting your home’s value.

Outdoor Living Spaces: With the region’s pleasant climate, outdoor areas for enjoyment and entertainment such as decks, patios, and gardens can serve as additional living space, enhancing your property’s appeal and value.

Local Amenities: Proximity to shopping, restaurants, parks, and recreational facilities adds to your home’s desirability and attractiveness to potential buyers.

Market Conditions: Understanding current market trends and pricing your home competitively is crucial. This approach can attract more buyers and lead to a quicker sale at a favourable price point.

Professional Photography: High-quality marketing photographs, drone shots, videos and floorplans that showcase your home’s best features are essential for online listings.

Effective Marketing: Utilising various marketing channels, including online platforms, social media, and local real estate agents, maximises exposure and attracts more prospective buyers to your property.

Home Security: Enhancing security measures, such as installing security screens/doors and a security system, can reassure buyers about the safety of your property, potentially adding value to your home.

Local Schools: Proximity to reputable schools is a significant selling point for families.

Neighbourhood Trends: Being aware of, and leveraging positive neighbourhood developments, such as infrastructure improvements or new

amenities, can positively impact your home’s perceived value.

Flexibility: Being open to negotiation terms, such as timing and conditions of sale, can attract a broader range of buyers and increase your chances of achieving a higher selling price.

Water Views: If applicable, emphasizing scenic water views, whether of the ocean, rivers, or lakes etc can significantly enhance your home’s desirability and justify a premium price.

Storage Space: Ample storage options are highly valued. Ensure closets, cabinets, and garage space are organized and decluttered to showcase their potential and add value to your property.

Room for the all the lifestyle toys: This is a huge selling point for buyers including room for storing boats, jet skis and caravans etc.

Upgraded Kitchen and Bathrooms: Investing in modern appliances, fixtures, and finishes for kitchens and bathrooms can greatly enhance the sale price.

Home Office Space: With the rise of working remotely, having a dedicated home office or flexible workspace is increasingly desirable.

Feedback and Adjustments: Act on feedback from buyer inspections to address any concerns or make minor adjustments that can improve your home’s appeal and ultimately help achieve a higher sale price.

By integrating these factors into your selling strategy, you can effectively showcase the unique advantages of your home on the Coffs Coast. Each element plays a crucial role in attracting potential buyers, enhancing your home’s value perception and ultimately maximising the sale price of your home!
