NORTH COAST V-TWINS CELEBRATING 35 YEARS

How did your family get started in the motorcycle business?

For me, it all began when I was young, during a specific moment at the theatres in Gloucester. I vividly recall the rumble of a V-Twin engine firing up, igniting something within me. Little did anyone, especially myself, imagine that this initial spark would evolve into the businesses we have today - North Coast V-Twins and Coffs KTM.

Motorcycles are a shared passion in our family. My wife Jill and I have four children— Richelle, Tonya, Karissa, and Beau—all of whom quickly learned to ride from a young

age. Our family home is on acreage, which provided the lifestyle we wanted for our kids growing up. There was always a jump, or a new track being carved out of the bush, or lawn being ripped up somewhere (much to Jill’s dislike), all of it offered endless entertainment for them, which is now enjoyed by our grandkids.

My Dad, Norm Beaton, was also a very capable driver and motorcycle rider, and many of his old friends shared incredible stories of his daring feats growing up. Reflecting on it now, he was my idol, and as a teenager, I tried emulating him, though my attempts often led to crashes in both cars and motorcycles. Despite my efforts, I never quite matched his skill. Although, I’ve noticed this same spirit strongly evident in our son

Beau; his ability to achieve the seemingly impossible on a motorcycle clearly reflects his grandfather’s DNA. Beau’s enjoyed a successful career in the Australian Superbike series over the years which led him onto the international circuit. Witnessing him conquer prestigious racetracks at incredible speeds was a fulfillment of my own dreams. Beau has checked off numerous motorcycle milestones, from the racetrack, with over 10 years competing in the Island Classic on the Irving Vincent, to the dirt, riding in the famous Finke Desert Race in Alice Springs. What inspired the founding of the motorcycle shop 35 years ago? Passion, without a doubt. My love for racing bikes and tinkering with friends’ motorcycles fueled the addiction and kept the dream alive for me.

North Coast Ducati emerged when Warren Fraser of Frasers Imports - the Ducati importer at the time - approached us after we acquired 4 out of the original 15 Ducati 851 Tri-Colour bikes imported into Australia in 1988. This partnership laid the foundation for our

venture into Ducati which we made official in 1989. Around 1996, we were offered the opportunity to incorporate HarleyDavidson into our store. Upon agreeing, we realised a name change was necessary to reflect this expansion, and that’s when North Coast V-Twins was born. And as they say, if you’re doing what you love, you never work a day in your life, right?

Here at North Coast V-Twins, we take pride in our meticulously designed bike shop, ensuring it’s not just a place to shop, but a destination that reflects our dedication to quality and customer satisfaction.

In 1998 my Dad lost his life on a charity ride with Rotary. Ironically, I was in Italy for a Ducati dealer conference when I received the news. After Dad’s accident, I seriously considered giving up the motorcycle business, but deep down, I knew that wouldn’t be what he wanted. I believe what we’ve built since then would make him proud. How has the motorcycle industry evolved since the shop first opened its doors?

Over the past 35 years, online shopping has revolutionised consumer behavior. We’ve adapted by establishing a highly successful online store, reaching customers not only across Australia but also globally. However, we’ve found that many still value the tactile experience of trying on gear and seeing bikes up close. Therefore, we’ve invested heavily in creating an exceptional showroom experience. Here at North Coast V-Twins, we take pride in our meticulously designed bike

shop, ensuring it’s not just a place to shop, but a destination that reflects our dedication to quality and customer satisfaction. What sets your business apart from others in the area? Our commitment to the long view. It’s not just about making a bike sale today; it’s about creating generations of freedom and fun for families. We prioritise building lasting relationships with our customers, ensuring they have not only the right bike but also the support and

Beau, Karissa, Jill and Ashley celebrating V-Twins 35th Anniversary.

Can you share any memorable moments or milestones from the shop’s 35-year history? Over our 35-year history, North Coast V-Twins has celebrated numerous memorable moments and milestones. While we appreciate the excitement of introducing new brands, expanding our facilities, and earning accolades, the true milestones lie in the enduring relationships we’ve built.

One of the most significant aspects of our journey has been the dedication and expertise of our long-serving staff members who either are or quickly have become apart of our family. Their commitment has been instrumental in shaping our business and providing exceptional service to our customers year after year. Having some of my core team by my side for over 20 years is the highest compliment I could receive. Their loyalty and dedication speak volumes about our business.

Equally important are the loyal customers who have been with us from the beginning. Their trust and support have been invaluable, reflecting the deep-rooted connections we’ve cultivated within our community.

These relationships, both with our team and our customers, are the heart of our success story. They highlight the camaraderie and shared passion that define North Coast V-Twins

as more than just a business, but as a beloved part of our community’s motorcycle culture..

How has the shop adapted to changes in technology and customer preferences over the years?

NORTH COAST V-TWINS CELEBRATING 35 YEARS

Having some of my core team by my side for over 20 years is the highest compliment I could receive. Their loyalty and dedication speak volumes about our business.

Motorcycles are one of the most personal purchases you can make in your life, customers preferences are all about small things that define the person through the bike. Whilst we have embraced technology that allows us to manage our growing customer base there’s no amount of data or better technology than listening to the customer when it comes to improving their love and enjoyment of the product. We are selling experience first, its hard to capture that on a spreadsheet.

What role has the shop played in the local motorcycle community? North Coast V-Twins has played a pivotal role in nurturing and enhancing the local motorcycle community. Despite Coffs Harbour often being seen as a transient stop, our shop stands as both a starting point and a destination in itself—a true

home for motorcyclists. For our customers from outside the Coffs Coast region, our store redefines their connection to this area. We provide a welcoming haven that represents the essence of our community— passionate, laid-back, and supportive.

Beyond retail, we actively contribute to local events, rides, and initiatives that bring together riders of all backgrounds. By fostering this sense of community and belonging, North Coast V-Twins has become more than a dealership; we are a pillar of the local motorcycle culture—a place where riders come not just to buy bikes, but to share experiences, forge friendships, and celebrate their shared passion for motorcycles.

How have customer needs and expectations changed over the decades, and how has the shop met those changes? Customers riding skills and passions evolve rapidly from their very first dirt bike and over the decades, customer needs and expectations

in the motorcycle industry have changed significantly. What sets North Coast V-Twins apart is the diversity of bikes and brands and riding experiences available as that customers journey and evolving needs and desires change over the years. Coffs KTM is a place that riders as young as 2 or 3 years old can start their journey. Its why we are excited about integrating Coffs KTM into the larger North Coast V-Twins store very soon. It will be a motorcycle mecca that draws enthusiasts from across the country or even around the globe to Coffs Harbour, where they can map out a lifetime of riding adventures

How do you maintain a strong connection with your customers and build a loyal customer base? Our customers are ultimately just like us. We’re Riders, we’re Family and we aren’t going anywhere.

Some of our customers have been with us as long as we’ve been in business, becoming integral to the DNA of our establishment and extending our family-like atmosphere. We foster strong relationships with local riding groups such as the Mid North Coast Harley Owners Group and the Ducati Owner’s Club. These members are not just loyal, longstanding customers who support our business; they also mentor and guide newcomers on their journey to discovering the essence of riding through their social ride days and gatherings. Motorcycling truly becomes a part of your being, there is a unique bond and camaraderie among riders that’s difficult to articulate. We

Racing and riding has been in the family for generations.

hold regular ride days with the community, launch events when new models are released and just generally make ourselves as available as possible when the community have questions, whether that is through social media or in person in our showroom. Our bars are set high, and our aim is always for our customers to be walking or riding away with our signature “V-Twin Grin.”

Coffs KTM is a place that riders as young as 2 or 3 years old can start their journey. It’s why we are excited about integrating Coffs KTM into the larger North Coast V-Twins store very soon.

Are there any motorcycle models or brands that have been popular throughout the shop’s history? That’s a question that every customer will have a very different answer for. If we got our Ducati, Harley-Davidson, Royal Enfield, KTM and GAS GAS customers in one room to answer that, it would be a topic of passionate debate.

What services does the shop offer to support motorcycle enthusiasts? We provide everything from bike sales and servicing to customisations and repairs. We have a strong retail front with a wide range of riding gear, accessories and giftware. We also host regular maintenance workshops and ladies garage nights which are very popular. But what it’s all about is the experience and I believe strongly

in the mental health benefits of motorcycling. I often tell my kids and staff to put on a helmet and take a ride if they need to clear their heads. There’s something very therapeutic about it. If you know, you know.

Looking ahead, what are the shop’s goals for the future? We envision growth not just as a business imperative, but as a natural reflection of Coffs Harbour’s expanding community and the broader riding community. Our goals include continual improvement in service, maintaining a strong and dedicated team, and the successful integration of Coffs KTM in the near term. Upholding our status as a family-owned and operated business remains our top priority. As I see our grandkids ripping around the yard or at the Coffs Motorcycle Club track, I am confident that the future of our shop is in great hands for a long time to come.

Martin oe

Rochelle Martin has spent almost 20 years working with Getaway as a producer, a job that many of us would envy! She has been to some of the furthest corners of the globe and experienced some of the most incredible sights. We wanted to hear all about her role and get some tips on where to travel to next!

Hworked for Getaway for almost 20 years now, can you tell us a bit about your role? Getaway is one of those now rare shows where a producer sees a story all the way from conception to the edit. As a producer I head off with the team with an itinerary, (team = presenter, sound recordist, cameraman and myself) and ultimately my job is to make sure we come back with great content.

I tend not to pre-script, I like to see what unravels as we go. Some of the best moments can’t be planned for and I direct and write on the road. Once we’re home the rest of the crew is done and I rewatch and log all the footage and create a paper edit for the editor. When things go smoothly it can be a breeze but, as expected with travel, things don’t

always go to plan, so it can, at times, be challenging.

What have been some of your most memorable travel moments so far?

Without doubt travelling to Antarctica and South Georgia absolutely tops the list. It was my first big trip post-COVID and I went into it knowing, (thinking I knew), that it was a once in a lifetime experience. Super fortunately I was sent back there the following year, and it was every bit as magical.

If I had to list the top moments that come to mind: paddle boarding with minke whales in Antarctica, polar plunges in the Arctic and Antarctica, sitting on an island in South Georgia with a half a million nesting penguins, trekking with the gorillas in Rwanda, hot air ballooning over the Serengeti, seeing polar bears on a fjord in Greenland and being hosted by the Dilmah

family (the late Merrill Fernando) in Sri Lanka, are some experiences I’ll never forget.

What have been some of the more ‘off the beaten track’ places your work has taken you to? Antarctica, South Georgia, Falkland Islands, Icelandic eskimo villages, Russia (which now seems off the beaten track), Rwanda, Machu Picchu, Myanmar, Wadi Rum, pretty much every corner of this amazing planet.

Have you ever been somewhere that turned out to be very different to what you expected? For sure. Years ago we had all been assigned shoots for a special on festivals. There was the running of the bulls in Spain, Carnivale in Rio, and all sorts of fabulous trips and I got a balloon festival in Taiwan. I thought I drew the short straw, but it was brilliant, not just the festival but the entire trip.

You have been based here in Coffs with your family for some time. As someone who has been to many corners of the world, what do you feel is special about the Coffs Coast? Definitely the beautiful beaches and the pace and ease of the lifestyle. It’s a bonus that many of my family and closest friends live there too. It’s what I miss most, as currently we’ve made a temporary move up to Coolangatta.

Where are some of your holiday destinations of choice when taking a trip with the family? My boys surf, so family holidays tend to revolve around that, putting Indo high up the list as a frequent family travel destination for us. As much as I love travelling and exploring other countries, nothing beats camping on our coastline. Lots of people say I must want to stay home for my holidays, but the opposite is true, if I’m not travelling, I’m planning family holidays!

Is there anywhere you haven’t been to yet that’s on your bucket list? It’s crazy but the more you travel the bigger the world

seems to get. I’ve still got a hefty bucket-list, including Costa Rica, Mexico and Morocco. What are some things that make travelling as part of the Getaway team different to other travel experiences? I feel like we’re really fortunate that we get to see and do the things that you would want to do if you were travelling as a tourist, as we’re trying to show the best of what there is.

Travelling for the show also gives us incredible and exclusive access to places. Just recently the blue mosque in Turkey opened just for us.

Years ago, we filmed a night tour at Alcatraz in San Fran and it was the one night of the week they closed to tourists so they opened just for us. Being there just the four of us plus a guide is something that has always stayed with me.

Finally, what are your top 5 mustexperience travel destinations and why?

1.ANTARCTICA: there is simply nowhere else on earth like it.

2. SOUTH GEORGIA: the same as above. Antarctica for its ice and expanse and pure wonderland, South Georgia for its unmatched wildlife experiences (known as the Serengeti of the ocean).

3. AFRICA: Hard to specify one country, but I feel like the real wildlife safari and cultural experience of Africa is a must-do in your lifetime, especially the eastern parts of Africa, like Kenya and Tanzania.

4. CAPPADOCIA: This was a recent find for me. It was an add on to a work trip that I did with just my husband and I, after seeing images online. It is so other-worldly, the landscape is unlike anywhere else I’ve been.

5. INDIA: Definitely not for everyone, but nowhere on the planet will give you the sensory experience of India, it’s so alive! Thanks Rochelle.

King Stingray will be performing at THE HOEY MOEY HERE IN COFFS ON THE 14TH AUGUST. WE HAD A CHAT WITH BAND MEMBER ROY KELLAWAY about the band’s beginnings

and what we can expect from them next!

Hi Roy. Can you share the story behind the formation of King Stingray? How did you all come together as a band?

I grew up in a community called Yirrkala, which is like northeast Arnhem Land, east of Darwin, in the NT. That’s where me, Yirra, Yimila, and Dimathaya all grew up. A lot of us actually grew up on the same street and we always had aspirations to play music. Our parents played music in rock bands. Dima’s grandfather was a singer, my Dad was the bass player for Yothu Yindi, and Yirra’s uncle was Dr M Yunupinu; frontman of Yothu Yindi.

different bands growing up in primary school and high school, under different names. Around 2019, we decided to make this King Stingray band that we talked about for a while growing up. We recorded the first few songs just at home at my place.

Then it started to sort of pick up, and we got into the studio, and that's when I pulled in Cam and Lewis from Brisbane, who are the drummer and bass player.

When we went into the studio with that outfit, the two Brissy fellows and then my mates I grew up with, everything just felt right.

There's this long lineage of family musicians and music in the air I guess, and growing up in that community there was lots of music. My Dad was the music teacher, so after school, we used to get the keys for the music room and have a jam and muck around on all the instruments.

All four of us play a bit of everything and we always wanted to make a band of ourselves. We played in

Lewis is an old friend of mine who I've known for years, who I also played in indie rock bands with on the East Coast, cutting our teeth on those little pub shows as little groms. Then I met Cam, the bass player, in Brisbane probably around 2018. We moved in together and as flatmates that friendship grew and we played lots of music together.

It was my NT world combined with my Brisbane world with Cam and Lewis that made up the band. When we went into the studio with that outfit, the two Brissy fellows and then my mates I grew up with, everything just felt right. We had our first ever gig supporting The Chats, a punk rock band from the Sunny Coast.

Continued over....

How would you describe your musical style to someone who has never heard your music before?

I think we kind of go from this really kind of classic Australiana rock, but with a big surf rock undertone. Growing up, our influences were basically our family because we didn't have Spotify or the streaming platforms there are nowadays, and we were living so remotely, in the bush. The music we listened to was basically our parents playing music.

My Dad had a big influence on us. He loves his surf rock, and sorta scungy swamp Darwin rock music, which is kind of like country mixed with a bit of grunge. Then I think we just kind of added our own thing. If you listen to that first album there’s a few different moods in there. Probably to summarise the genre, we often just say it’s surf rock, which keeps it pretty vague because people don't really know what that means, so it kinda gets us out of answering that question!

We’re going to be seeing you play at

the Hoey Moey here in Coffs Harbour in August, what can fans expect from a live King Stingray performance?

It’s going to be all time! We've never played at Coffs before, and we're really big on our live shows. We’ve put a lot of effort into making this show really special. We've come from a very far away place up in the bush and to come down to this southern part of Australia - well Coffs is very far south for us!

When you live up in the Arnhem Land, it's a long way. So what you can expect is a big rock show that’s energy driven and powerful, really fun and good vibes! Lots of smiles, lots of people dancing. We really have a lot of fun playing music and making songs and we hope

that people can hear that joy. We’ve gigged a lot, and it's really made us who we are, we're a touring band. Being a live band is really important to us, it's a big part of what we do, and we really do pride ourselves at the live show.

My Dad had a big influence on us, he loves his surf rock, and sorta scungy swamp Darwin rock music, which is kind of like country mixed with a bit of grunge.

We've been working on some really cool things for the show and we've got some really cool new songs we want to share. We just finished a new album, which is coming out in a few months time towards the end of the year, so we've got some new music to share, which we're really excited about. It is a new sort of evolution of the band.

Can you walk us through your typical process when creating new music?

I mean, there's no exact method. We have

There's six people in the band and we all add our flavor to it. It starts off with someone's idea, and we just bring it together and see where it lands.
With this new album, we’re really singing about global messages and human messages and human feelings that we all can relate to.

different ways of putting it together, but usually it starts out with someone with a riff, and we kind of workshop it as a band, and go from there. I think we all have things that we want to write about, the narrative is really important to us, telling the story. We also really love telling a story that is a lived experience, and that people can resonate with.

With this new album, we're really singing about global messages and human messages and human feelings that we all can relate to. There’s six people in the band and we all add our flavour to it. It starts off with someone's idea, and we just bring it together and see where it lands.

What have been some of the most

memorable moments in your journey as a band so far?

There's been so many amazing experiences! We feel so lucky, to be a band and to tour and to have these amazing, unique experiences. It’s amazing where music can take you. We think about that a lot actually, especially now after we finished that first album cycle and toured heaps, and now we're reflecting on that, it’s been a crazy few years!

Some moments that come to mind are playing at the MCG for Dreamtime at the ‘G in front of over 100,000 people and being televised to millions on the TV. That was pretty special. Doing the NRL grand final, again in front of millions, was pretty crazy. We love our footy.

Music brings people together; so does sport. We've gone to the US a couple of times, to New York and we've also done some shows in Austin, Texas, which was really cool too. Going overseas felt really special, but so do the local ones, the hometown gigs and the ones on the east coast. Sometimes there’s shows that just stick with you forever and you don't know what it is about it. That’s why this tour, where we’re going to Coffs Harbour and all down the east coast, will be special.

Where can we follow your journey or find tickets for your shows?

Check out our website kingstingrayofficial. com, you can get tickets for our shows there. Follow our socials to check out what we’re up to, where we’re playing, and keep an eye out for our new record!

Thanks Roy.

Snug Cats

Maree started her ca ery, Snug Cats, a er noticing for herself a lack of options for boarding cats on the Mid North Coast. She set out to create a 5 star facility where cats would be comfortable, calm and cared for whilst staying away from home.

Hi Maree. Can you tell us a bit about what Snug Cats is and how the concept came about?

When I couldn’t find any suitable accommodation for my cats back in 2014, the idea of building a luxury cattery started to take shape. It is a real dilemma for many people, to leave their loved family members in the care of others. I searched all of the catteries in the area but found nothing with which I felt comfortable, they were all caged areas and very unappealing. All were attached to kennels, so the constant barking was also an issue.

Visiting Victoria regularly I had seen that the days of caged enclosures in kennels and catteries had changed and that there was now 5 star pet accommodation available. I wanted to have this in our area.

It’s a unique place. What was the process of designing the spaces and bringing it all to life like and what were some of the main features you wanted to include?

The initial drawing was pretty much how I had envisioned the cattery as it is today. I chose the site, measured and taped it out roughly and then looked at different types of sheds. I chose a barn style shed.

I ordered the shed, the concrete was laid, and it was erected in 2015.

I designed the shed to have good airflow through the building which included louvred windows and Whirlybird roof vents. I contracted a plasterer to clad the inside walls with villa-board and build four pens on either side of the middle section of the shed which was to be the foyer and a work area at the back. Each apartment was 2.4m X 1.6m. They were designed to have solid walls with large sliding windows in each wall. The cats would be able to look at one another but not breathe or sneeze on

each other. The windows were designed so that they could be opened to house families or cats on long stays.

Cat doors were also installed in each apartment at a 2m height and accessed from a shelf high on the inside wall to give access to the outside pens.

The cats would be able to look at one another but not breathe or sneeze on each other. The windows were designed so that they could be opened to house families or cats on long stays.

Inside, I designed mesh corridors to have a 2 door security system. Each apartment was laid with hospital grade vinyl flooring.

Each apartment was then fitted with shelves and stairs for access to give the cats activities and height, something that is important in the psyche of a cat. They were then painted and designed with a theme to add character. This was also a way of differentiating the rooms from one another such as George is in the Zebra Room or Jack is in the China Room. It works for me.

The work room consisted of benches, storage space and installation of a washing machine, dishwasher, refrigerator, air conditioner and sink.

What were your main goals for Snug Cats and the service you provide?

The main focus overall was to make Snug Cats a safe and 5 star luxurious facility which had an easy to clean environment where cats didn’t feel threatened.

It is a stand alone cattery so there is no constant barking environment and most cats settle very quickly into the comfortable air-conditioned environment. Music is played throughout the day which tends to give a calming effect.

Cats are each given an igloo where they can hide and feel safe especially on their initial visit. They have warm snuggly beds and big strong cat trees. They are fed twice daily unless otherwise requested and instructions by their owners are always strictly followed. Snug Cats prides itself on flexibility and has no strict pickup and drop off times, these are arranged through consultation with the owners.

Because of the litter system used and the attention-to-detail, the cattery has no nasty odours.

What sort of feedback have you had from clients so far?

Absolutely excellent. All of the clients have been very approving and as a result many have returned over and over again. I have clients who live in Sydney who originally booked their 3 cats into Snug Cats four

Christmases ago when they holidayed at Crescent Head. They have been back every year and now twice they have travelled overseas but have insisted their cats still come to Snug Cats. They have sent them up on pet transport twice now. Many of the clients come from Hastings, Macleay and Nambucca Valleys.

You have many years of experience with animals, can you share a bit about your background?

I adopted my first rescue cat at the age of 11 and have since adopted many dogs, cats and horses over the years. In my younger days I worked with horses for 3 years on a thoroughbred stud Farm and I volunteered at Mornington Peninsula Pound several years ago. I have now worked with cats at Snug Cats for the past 7 years.

Animals have held a huge place in my life and will continue to do so.

Why did you decide to work with boarding cats in particular?

I saw the need for a 5 star facility for cats and pursued this goal. Cats are also much quieter than dogs, a bonus to the neighbours. I love working with cats and have learnt a lot

over the past 7 years. I enjoy the cats that return regularly and meeting new ones. I have become very fond of a lot of them. I have had a few very elderly cats stay in their twenties as well as kittens as young as 12 weeks. I have also had several cats on long stays for up to six months and this facility is perfect for these long stays as the cats have plenty of room and access to the outside. They are kept amused with a variety of toys and tunnels.

Do you have any plans or aspirations for Snug Cats moving into the future?

To date, Snug Cats has never been advertised. Bookings have either come from the website or by word of mouth. I have very supportive businesses in both the Hastings and Macleay Valleys. Local vets often recommend the cattery to their clients as well as local businesses.

I have in the last 12 months added 3 more apartments, one large enough to house a family of 4 cats.

originally from Chicago who has found herself living on the Coffs Coast. She has an incredible portfolio including everything from fashion, beauty, lifestyle and runway work to working and in remote locations from the sea to the snow in all sorts of weather!

BRYN FABBRI

Hi Bryn. How did you first start out in the world of modelling?

I first started modelling back home in Chicago. My sisters and I participated in community pageants when we were younger. Both my sisters took home crowns, I on the other hand did not. Instead I was awarded Ms. Congeniality, a title appointed by my fellow contestants. With the pageant system tied closely to charities I was asked afterwards if I’d like to volunteer for a number of charitable fashion shows as a runway model. After one of the shows I was scouted and the rest is history. You have been involved in many different campaigns, what have been some stand out jobs for you so far?

I accidentally created a niche with my newfound love of freediving. As an underwater talent, I’ve shot everything from jewellery and skincare to a Glad Wrap commercial.

I love any opportunity to shoot in nature. It can be an adventure taking film crews and clients into the wild. Recently, I embarked on

a campaign where we were caught in a torrential downpour.

The most interesting underwater job I was casted for was a shark movie. I performed as a stunt double for one of the actresses and ironically this project financed my work in shark activism here with “Nets Out Now”, a coalition dedicated to shark education and research for safer and more effective programs.

Do you have a favourite type of shoot to work on?

I love any opportunity to shoot in nature. It can be an adventure taking film crews and clients into the wild. Recently, I embarked on a campaign where we were caught in a torrential downpour. The images turned out incredible, but you’d never look at the photos and know that we were running after equipment in gale force winds, nearly waterlogged the camera, or that we were sandblasted on a long hike back to the car. That’s what turns a shoot into a memorable experience.

What have been some of the most memorable locations you have been to for a photoshoot?

Here in Bellingen. Coming from a city I could never have dreamed of crystal clear creeks and lush rainforest as a backdrop. To have that opportunity with a local brand like State of Embrace made it even more special.

How do you find working in the fashion/ modelling world and being based in a regional area? How have you made that work over the last few years and what adjustments have you had to make? Honestly, I end up travelling a bit for jobs. It’s great to have an excuse to visit friends near Brisbane and Sydney, but I’m usually unavailable for in-person castings, and therefore I miss out on a good number of opportunities. It’s a trade-off I’m ok with, and I have managed to get a few clients here on the Mid North Coast. Working locally has its own benefits too. With limited makeup artists and photographers it means I work with familiar faces. It makes shoots effortless because I know exactly what the photographer needs from me and the MUAH’s already know what makeup and hair

styles work. It’s the best!

You’ve got some other projects in the works at the moment, can you tell us a bit about them?

I am currently working on a film project around Sydney. It’s still early days but our aim is to highlight how to find what you love to do in life. I’m lucky I have talented friends in the film industry that appreciated my concept enough to help bring it to life.

How has your experience working with so many different people and brands over the years set you up for this next chapter?

What started in Chicago and eventually took me to Los Angeles, then all over Canada, and now here to this beautiful country I’ve called home for the past four years, has given me the confidence that I can manage anywhere. During the 2020 pandemic, I never stopped working as a model, which reassures me that I’m meant to be doing some version of this type of work.

What are some of your goals and aspirations for the years ahead?

I want to incorporate more producing moving forward. I’ve become more creative in these years and I feel I have so much more to add to campaigns and projects than just modelling. Where can we follow along or get in touch?

Thank you so much for taking the time to feature me here in Focus. You can follow my journey on Instagram at @gotbryn

GRINSPOON HAVE THEIR NEW ALBUM 'WHATEVER, WHATEVER' BEING RELEASED ON THE 9TH AUGUST AND WILL BE HEADING OFF ON A HUGE TOUR ACROSS THE COUNTRY, INCLUDING A SHOW AT THE SAWTELL RSL ON FRIDAY 25TH OCTOBER. WE SPOKE TO DRUMMER KRIS HOPES ABOUT IT AHEAD OF THE SHOW!

Hey Kris. It's been 12 years since Grinspoon released new music, how does it feel to be back with "Unknown Pretenders" and a new album?

Awesome! It feels great. We haven't released anything new for a while. We've been doing lots of old stuff for ages and it's just fresh for the band to have some new stuff to play. What inspired the band to start working on new material after such a long hiatus?

Well, we hadn't really stopped. We'd been touring still, and we were just kind of bored playing the same songs. Although people want to hear our old hits, and that's fun in itself, for us we just wanted to be challenged again with some new material. We had kind of continued to write throughout the last 12 years, and there's probably a couple of tracks on there that are a few years old, but a lot of the stuff is pretty new and current. It's cool and it's given us a new breath of life. What can fans expect from the new record?

It's probably back to our roots a bit. It's a fairly quick album. There's a lot of riffs on here, which I think is what the majority of our fans like about us. So to have a nice riff based album is exciting, you know.

The upcoming "Whatever, Whenever, Wherever" tour includes 45 dates across the country, including shows in Coffs Harbour and Port Macquarie. What can we expect from these shows?

It’s a massive tour. We haven't done a tour like that for years. Most of the shows we've been doing recently have been festivals and bigger shows. So going back to these venues

and bringing our music back to the people, back to the regional areas, which is kind of where we started. So it's going to be an awesome tour and it is quite massive for us. Phil has mentioned bringing the show to venues suffering a bit in the regions recently. Why is it important for Grinspoon to support these smaller local venues rather than doing big stadium shows?

That's where it all started for us. We formed our band in Lismore NSW, and that's a relatively small country town. When we first started, we got a little bit of airplay with Triple J, but then they kind of stopped playing us, so we had to go to the regions and regional towns and sort of pick a fan base up from there. So I think it's just right for us to go back and sort of repay that.

down there. Oscar’s got his own sort of home studio, so they welcomed us into the house and we basically hung out with his dog, and almost became part of his family for a month. Oscar's a nice bloke, he knew what we were trying to achieve and he really added to the record.

With the new album and tour, what are your hopes and expectations for Grinspoon in this new era?

We just worked our butts off to get it happening. That’s not a great deal of time, but it was enough for us to do what we needed.

Can you share any memorable moments or stories from the recording sessions or rehearsals for the new album?

Well we recorded it with a guy called Oscar Dawson, who is in a band called Holy Holy. We recorded it down in Rye, which is down on the Mornington Peninsula in Victoria. There wasn't too much going on there, we were just pretty much slaves in the studio and got it done. I think it took us about a month, from start to finish. We just worked our butts off to get it happening. That's not a great deal of time, but it was enough for us to do what we needed. We had a ball

Who knows, the sky’s the limit! We're happy to be back out touring. I don't know what will happen from here. We will at least be touring for the next couple of years but who knows from there. It's all kind of out in the open, or it will be on August the 9th! We’ll see how everyone takes the new album and we'll move from there I guess.

What message would you like to convey to Grinspoon fans eagerly awaiting the new album and tour?

Well we’re looking forward to it. It's a pretty awesome album. We're going to enjoy playing it, so bring your jumping shoes… It's a pretty fast paced record, you should have a good time!

How can fans stay updated with the latest news and events from Grinspoon? Keep track of us on our website grinspoon. com.au and Spotify.

Thanks Kris.

At La Luz we capture special and candid moments throughout the day. We edit and put together short reels and photo montages to give to the bride and groom, usually within 24 hours, allowing them to share their special day across their socials.

At La Luz we don’t take away from having a videographer or photographer there, we just add that little extra to take the stress of the people capturing the extra moments missed.

Using an iPhone 15 pro max and iPhone 14 pro with a DJI gimble, we also have available an DJI mini 3 drone for those neat aerial shots. We also have 2 x rode microphones which assist in picking up amazing audio that can be later used in our video clips.

Where is this being held, and on what day and times.

Deli Frost has taken her art practice from a hobby to a full time profession in just a few years, and has been getting noticed by both locals and art lovers from all over the world! She creates custom pieces as well as fine art prints, and puts so much into each and every piece.

Deli Frost

ARTIST of the MONTH

Hey Deli, can you tell us a bit about your background and how you got started in art? For as long as I can remember I have loved painting, drawing and being creative.

When I was young my parents would go to functions and I was happiest tagging along with my paper and pencils. At school I had low self confidence in my art and I was never a kid who wanted to stand out. Most of my artistic “talent”, if we can call it that, at that point was shown through drawings at home. Something shifted in year 12 and I decided to go ‘all in’ at school.

After a challenging and stressful year with my schooling I was totally surprised when my HSC major work received 100% and was selected for Art Express. It was my proudest moment to date, however I still left school believing there was no career for me in the arts. I just knew how hard and rare it is to make it as an artist, musician, actor etc. I didn't believe that I, of all people, would have what it takes to make it. Fast forward, after many years of working and travelling and being totally lost in what I wanted to do and who I was, I picked up art again in 2020. In the depths of the pandemic I started to share a few sketches I did for friends and family on an instagram page I named ‘Created By Deli’. I still remember the first dm I received of someone asking for a custom artwork. I charged them $40 for an artwork that took 8 hours. I just couldn't believe someone wanted to purchase something I MADE. From that moment on it's been the biggest part of my life. I have put countless hours daily into that page which then evolved into a business and allowed me to take a

leap and leave full time employment in 2022 to see how far I could really go.

I have stayed excited, driven and open to anything this entire time. I remember someone saying to me once, “if you're looking for opportunity, opportunities find you”, and I believe that is why I have been able to grow Created By Deli into what it is today.

if you’re looking for opportunity, opportunities find you and I believe that is why I have been able to grow Created By Deli into what it is today.

How has your style evolved over the

years? Can you describe the changes and their significance?

My first artworks are pretty fun to go back and look at, let's say I've come a long way.

The main artworks I was creating back in 2020 were pet portraits and I painted over 200 pets in that first year. I also used a lot of pastel colours and was creating softer original artworks.

Continued over...

In 2022 I left full time employment and had a lot more time to throw everything at Created By Deli, and I did feel a sense of pressure to prove to everyone this was the right choice. I launched my retail store online and started to print my work into fine art prints. I also started to work with other local businesses and send my pet portraits all over the world.

At the end of 2022, I was feeling super burnt out. I gave myself a full two weeks off to rest, eat, drink and reset over the Christmas period. I wanted to remind myself of how much I wanted this when I began.

In early January 2023 whilst on the break, I had an idea for bright coloured Zodiac Prints. I wanted this collection to be 12 pieces, one of each star sign that friends could gift each other for their birthday.

Once I started sharing this collection day by day, the hype started to build. I was receiving hundreds of messages a day from people eager to see what I had come up with for their sign. I released this collection on my 24th birthday and I sold multiple copies of each sign that day, and they still continue to be best sellers to this day.

From 2023 onwards I changed to bright coloured artworks and added my checker border that became a staple in a lot of my

pieces. From this “ The Cocktail Collection” was born and most recently the “Holiday Often Series” which has been, without a doubt, my most successful artworks to date.

You have done small pieces to commissioned large murals. What do you personally prefer? I love all the work I do. Everytime someone books me for an artwork, no matter how small, I feel so incredibly lucky to be able to do the work.

However, when I booked a mural in Korora at a lovely local couple's house, I bounced out of bed every single day. I can be hard on myself and my work, but every time I stepped back from that job I was filled with pride and surprise with what I had created. I felt the same with the mural at Thrive Pilates I did earlier in the year. I completed this in 4 days over the Easter break and I was honestly blown away by what I had done.

I can be hard on myself and my work, but every time I stepped back from that job I was filled with pride and surprise with what I had created.

and why? There have been some incredible projects I've been a part of. I think rewarding jobs would be working with small businesses in the area, being trusted to work at weddings for people's most special day of their life and creating custom pieces for people who may have lost a loved one. An example of this is painting grandparents with their grandchildren that they never got the chance to meet, or photos of pets that have passed that were once

their owner’s best friends. This is a pretty special part of my job.

Making loved people and animals live on through art for the people they left behind has to be the most rewarding part of my job.

You have recently taken on live wedding sketches. What does that entail and how has the reaction been so far?

This is a new wedding/event favour where I come to your event, take pictures of your guests whilst they are having a great time and I work away on a live sketch of them that they get to take home.

The response has been amazing. I make these really fun videos after the weddings of all the guest reactions and details from the day, you can see the happiness on everyone's faces when they receive their personalised artwork.

I have serviced over 20 local weddings and was even lucky enough to get a Finalist award last year for the Wedding Industry Awards in the category “Wedding Services”.

I am now travelling all over Australia this year for different weddings and have been quoting for large corporate companies in the UK.

Later this year I am headed to Vegas to service 3 weddings in the famous little Vegas Chapel. A dream of mine is to be able to do a wedding in Lake Como, Italy.

How do you see your work evolving in the next few years and are there any new mediums or techniques you are interested in exploring? I would love to continue to get creative on large scale murals for different businesses or important causes. I would love to travel more for the live sketching and take inspiration from the places I get to see whilst travelling to bring home to my holiday inspired artworks. I love painting this collection

because people can have them in their house and be working towards seeing those places in real life, or just escaping in their own home to beautiful places in the world.

No matter what happens and where the art takes me, I am so proud to be from this area. This community and my incredible followers and customers have done nothing but be supportive and pushed me this whole way. It is never lost on me any time a Coffs Harbour local supports my business.

I take a moment everytime before I put something in the post and feel so lucky I get

to send off an artwork to someone who loves and connects with it. I always spend extra time when a local picks up their artwork from my driveway chatting and getting to know them and their story. It's the best job in the world and I cannot wait to meet more of you through this incredible adventure. Where can we find out more? My retail store is online at createdbydeli.com My instagram is @createdbydeli I also have Tiktok and Facebook under the same name.

Thanks Deli

Sara Jayne Prince has always had a passion for photography and her style is very distinctive and unique. With a background in film photography, her work seems to still capture that nostalgic, dreamy vibe. Sara is also responsible for Archive Mid North Coast, which started as a space for creatives, artists and musicians to exhibit and showcase their work.

Hi Sara. Can you share how you discovered your love of photography?

I can’t quite remember where this love started, all I know is ever since I was a kid I had a camera in my hand. Whether it was taking photos of nature on Kangaroo Island where I spent a lot of my youth or taking photos of my friends at school.

I remember discovering the work of Henri Cartier Bresson at a young age and being very taken by his street photography. Then after Uni I ended up studying photography at The Centre for Creative Photography in Adelaide. I was obsessed with film photography and spent whole entire days in the darkroom. I was very influenced by photographers like Duane Michals and Trent Parke as their work is a little dark and mysterious and they use a lot of in-camera techniques to create weird effects. Michals in particular is known for sequencing, almost cinematic style, to build tension and emotion. I find that when selecting photos

SaraJayne Prince

from some of my documentary style shoots I select sequences of images that create a storyline which probably comes from a bit of that influence.

How would you describe your style of photography and what are some of your favourite subjects to shoot?

I definitely love photographing people, especially in their natural state of being. I also love photographing weird unique landscapes and strange looking natural light, anything that’s a bit other-worldly or mysterious. I always find it hard to define my style but others have called it ‘dreamy’, ‘moody’ and ‘magical’ which is nice!

What have been some of your favourite shoots to date?

There’s been so many it's hard to single them out. Generally anything where I’m out in nature, photographing people just being their authentic selves, or hanging out with a couple or family at home just capturing their everyday life. I also love working with another creative when we are bouncing off each other and

coming up with ideas I wouldn’t have thought of on my own. Or sometimes it's as simple as an incredible natural light source that’s beautiful to photograph as the reason behind me loving a certain shoot.

Also, I once photographed an elopement on one of the islands on the Great Barrier Reef and got to fly there in a helicopter. We saw dugongs on the reef from above. I no longer photograph weddings but that was pretty cool!

Alongside your photography gig you also run Archive Mid North Coast, can you tell us about what Archive is all about?

Archive is a coming together of art forms in our region. I started it as a space where emerging artists could exhibit work, emerging musicians could perform to intimate crowds, the community could come for fun creative events and meet other like minded people. It’s now grown primarily into a bustling live music business. Archive is all about putting on unique live music events in character filled venues that need a boost, such as: The Bowraville

Theatre, Nambucca Arts Centre and Eungai Creek Buffalo Farm. There’s an element of nostalgia to my music events and I encourage a lot of storytelling and interaction between audience and artists. I also manage a local musician called James Bennett and work with several other musicians doing bookings, marketing and publicity for their tours and album releases.

I also love photographing weird unique landscapes and strange looking natural light, anything that’s a bit other-worldly or mysterious.

Why is it important to you as a creative to provide this space for other local creatives?

When I moved here in 2020 and it was those awful years of you-know-what, I really felt like something like this was needed. A space for people to come together and feel connected and a reason for creatives to want to keep creating. I had also moved from the Northern Rivers where I found it extremely hard to get into any galleries to exhibit. I would get completely ignored when reaching out to places and it didn’t feel nice. So I wanted to create a space where you didn’t have to be

a well known artist to be able to have a solo art exhibition. I’m also a big believer in paying artists properly and have sometimes made no money from a concert I’ve put on to ensure the artist gets paid properly for their time.

How does Archive and your photography business work hand in hand?

In this social media world we live in, I must say it’s been very handy to have the skills myself to be able to beautifully capture my events at Archive and use these images for content. It also means I can gift photos from live events, workshops and exhibitions to the artists and especially musicians who will often use the photos for future promo.

Have you got any exciting projects or exhibitions coming up at Archive that you can share with us?

So the sad news is I’m actually planning on closing the physical space of the Archive Warehouse at the end of this year. With all the music events at other venues happening it's

got hard to find the time to keep that space busy, but I am looking forward to collaborating with some other local businesses and venues to run things like our regular life drawing with live music night. I have a few more exhibitions lined up for the year before I close. Local artist Bron in August, and Kate Atkinson’s photography in September, and a solo exhibition of my work as a final show. I’ll also be hosting a little closing event so stay tuned! There’s also so many amazing concerts lined up for the remainder of this year.

What are your plans or aspirations moving forward in your photography work?

I definitely stopped using film a lot more in recent years, especially after moving away from Adelaide and not having access to a darkroom. But I’ve recently got my film cameras going again and I look forward to getting back into that medium and creating some work just for me!

Where can we follow your creative journey or get in touch?

My websites are: sarajayneprince.com and archivemnc.com.au and you can find both businesses on Facebook and Instagram

Thanks Sarah.

CONVERSATIONS

with JULIE THOMAS

FROM BEYOND THE SURFACE COUNSELLING

Being a parent may be one of the most difficult jobs. Parenting brings out the most intense and powerful emotions from sheer exhilaration to frustration and exhaustion. It is very much like riding an emotional roller coaster, one moment all is going well and the next it is chaos. Emotions are high, you are exhausted, it feels all too hard, and then the anger, guilt, and shameful thoughts kick in. If you are navigating this journey of parenthood single-handedly or have minimal parenting support from your partner or family, you need to take heart, (and a standing ovation), that it is a tough job, and we all have our times of struggles and doubts. We question ourselves about the job we are doing. If you could talk with other parents, you will soon discover that everyone is experiencing the same roller coaster of emotions and experiences.

It is important to manage feelings of anger, disappointment, and frustration so that you can emotionally connect, be available and teach children effective ways to act. A safe, content home is the best environment for all humans.

The type of relationship you have with your child is what guides them throughout their life. As adults, we have a huge responsibility to model behaviour worthy of children imitating. Imitation is how children learn socialness, fairness, trust, respect, empathy, kindness, and compassion. We also model how to behave in conflict situations, in frustration, and problem-solving situations. And yes, we do not get it right all the time, so please do not be too hard on yourself when the wheels fall off. And if the wheels fall off it

Parenting Stress and Conneion

is important to have a conversation to explain, explore and empower your child to understand what happened and where it went in the wrong direction. The goal is to teach your child skills and strategies they will build on and take with them for life. The idea of this technique is to help, not hurt or punish the child.

In every close relationship, we seek connection. Having emotional connection and availability is being present in the moment; no distractions, devices, or other jobs. This demonstrates to a child that you care and are present right here, right now, to listen to them, play and connect. Playing with your child is a way to relieve stress for adults. It can be going for a run around the backyard, jumping on the trampoline, dancing, singing, playing a game, or snuggling and reading a book together. When we are enjoying moments and laughing together, our body releases endorphins (those feel-good hormones) that promote wellbeing.

Focus on what is positive, right and going well. Psychological researcher John Gottman found in his research on relationships and parenting, that for relationships to thrive and be healthy we need a ratio of five positive interactions to every one negative interaction. Take a moment and see the world through your child’s eyes. Try and understand where they are coming from when they make bids for connection. This may be after a meltdown, fight, harsh words, or an argument. Take a moment, even if you are still feeling hurt and angry. The bid for connection may be just the comment ‘what is for tea,’. This may get you emotionally fired up again, especially if there has not been a resolution to the argument you

had. We are adults in this situation. We have more experience with conflict, and when looking through their eyes when they make that bid for connection, we have a profoundly serious choice to make. We have three ways of responding to this bid. We can turn away, ultimately dismissing the child; we can turn against, which demonstrates our disapproval, or, we can turn towards our child.

These actions may also play out in our relationships with our partners, friends, and family. So which will you choose? After a while, and it may be the next day with older children, choose the right moment when everyone is calm and revisit what happened. In an ageappropriate way name what was going on for you, and how you emotionally and physically felt. When I say physically felt, what I am talking about here are the physiological changes you were experiencing. We want to name and tame emotions for children to understand how their bodies feel when they are in emotionally challenging situations. It is important in building resilience, body awareness, reduction of anxious thoughts and self-regulation, self-awareness, and protective behaviours.

In today’s world, we need our children to be the best they can be both emotionally and in their body awareness.

Until next time, be kind and gentle with yourself. Julie Thomas MCouns, BPsychSC, BEd(ECTeach)

If you’ve ever felt worried, scared, or helpless about your financial situation, you’re not alone. Financial stress is a common experience, affecting people from all walks of life. Thanks to inflation and incremental interest rate rises, one in four Australians are finding it hard to get by on their current income.

Understanding Financial Stress

Financial stress can manifest in various ways, often tied to challenges in managing living expenses, missed loan repayments, or unexpected costs. This stress can significantly impact mental health, potentially leading to conditions such as depression, anxiety, and substance misuse. Conversely, existing mental health issues can exacerbate financial stress, creating a vicious cycle that can be hard to break. When is Financial Stress a Problem?

Financial stress becomes problematic when it negatively impacts your mood, consumes your thoughts, or affects your daily life. Key signs to look out for include feeling overwhelmed by your financial situation, persistent worry, feelings of hopelessness, using unhealthy coping mechanisms like substance misuse, and avoiding financial problems altogether. Recognising these signs is crucial to taking steps towards managing stress and improving your financial situation.

Practical Tips to Manage Financial Stress

Navigating financial difficulties can be daunting, but there are strategies to help you regain control and achieve financial stability. Here are some practical steps:

1. Limit Negative Thinking: Avoid self-criticism and focus on positive

aspects. Instead of viewing mistakes as failures, consider them learning opportunities.

2. Create a Budget:

Developing a budget can help reduce uncertainty and give you control over your finances. Start by listing your income and expenses, prioritise essential expenses, and set saving goals.

3. Cut Down on Expenses:

Look for ways to reduce spending, such as taking advantage of sales, eating out less, using public transport, and shopping at discount stores.

4. Prioritise Debt Repayment:

Paying off debt can alleviate stress. If your income isn’t enough to cover your debts, consider options like debt consolidation or negotiating new repayment terms with creditors.

5. Seek Professional Help:

Financial counsellors can provide valuable advice. Services like the National Debt Helpline and Mob Strong Debt Help offer free counselling to help you manage and repay debts.

Long-term Strategies for Managing Financial Stress

Long-term financial stability requires ongoing efforts. Here are some strategies to help you manage stress and improve your finances:

1. Practice Self-care:

Maintaining your mental, emotional, and physical well-being is crucial. This includes eating a healthy diet, exercising, getting enough sleep, and engaging in hobbies.

2. Save Regularly:

Even small monthly savings can build a more stable financial future. Set up automatic transfers

to ensure consistent saving.

3. Examine Your Relationship with Money:

Reflect on your spending habits and identify triggers that lead to unnecessary spending.

4. Set Limits on Discretionary Spending:

Establish a budget for non-essential expenses to avoid overspending.

At Maggie's Pet Co., we are dedicated to the highest standards of pet nutrition. Our team members are more than just retail assistants; they are certified pet nutritionists or actively undergoing certification. Eden – I have over a decade of experience in retail, during which I also studied pet nutrition. When a job vacancy opened in the grooming salon at Maggie's Pet Co., I seized the opportunity to enter the pet care industry. It quickly became apparent that my views on pet nutrition were shared by Lisa, inevitably leading to the development of Maggie’s Pet Co. as it is today. I have since completed several more certificates in pet nutrition, completed a Diploma of Business, and am currently pursuing a Bachelor of Health Science (Clinical Nutrition).

Why is it so important that your pet’s nutritional needs are met?

While dogs can derive energy from carbohydrates, their classification in the Order Carnivora indicates their physiological adaptation to consuming meat. Barring uncommon health conditions, insisting that dogs or cats should primarily consume a carbohydrate-dense, processed diet goes against their natural dietary needs.

Research indicates that providing a speciesappropriate diet consisting of fresh bones, muscle meat, organs, selected fruits and vegetables, seeds, and minimal whole grains can potentially mitigate the severity or incidence of skin conditions and allergies, prevent dental issues, manage mild arthritic symptoms, and enhance the microbiome health. These dietary improvements positively influence your pet’s immune response, cognitive functions and behaviour, and mitigate the risk of chronic diseases.

ese dietary improvements positively influence your pet’s immune response, cognitive functions and behaviour, and mitigate the risk of chronic diseases.

Can illnesses and their well-being be influenced by their diet?

In human studies, the abundance of research linking diet to overall health and longevity is undeniable. We know that over-consumption of all foods, not only ultra-processed varieties,

is contributing to the leading causes of death in developed countries, such as coronary heart disease, diabetes, and certain cancers. Given this understanding, it stands to reason that the over-consumption of processed foods would likely have similar effects on our dogs.

CAVE CITY

FLOAT & WELLNESS CENTRE

Laura - what is City Cave? City Cave is a sanctuary, a healing, nourishing place where you can remember what it is to "be". Spacious yet cosy, it is designed to help you relax from the moment you walk in. I love hearing "It smells so nice in here" when our guests arrive. We aim to delight and relax all your senses, and assist you to improve your wellbeing.

What attracted you to opening this business here in Coffs Harbour? We moved from Sydney to Bellingen 7 years ago, and experienced the well known difference in the availability of health and wellbeing services between cities and regional areas. I used to regularly travel to Sydney for work, and was always thankful that I could visit a City Cave, as the benefits I gained from the infrared sauna and float therapies were significant. I wanted to bring these benefits to the Mid North Coast community, and open a family business that helped people feel and be at their best.

What are all the services on offer? We offer a range of massages, including remedial, relaxation, deep tissue, lymphatic and pregnancy. We have 3 top of the line infrared saunas, and 3 float pools. These are all individual rooms, so you have the space just to yourself, or with a friend/partner if you choose the couple’s option.

Our infrared saunas have lots of glass, so they feel spacious and open. Our float pools are not pods, they are pools, larger than a queen size bed. You control the light and sound, so you can cater the experience to where you are at, and what you need to gain from it. Who can access your services? Anyone! You can pay for a casual visit, or for best value purchase a pack or membership. We always recommend you book so you can be assured of the time you prefer, but we also accommodate walk-ins whenever possible.

How does the membership work? You choose from our three services, float, infrared

sauna and/or massage, and weekly or monthly membership. You then always access that service at the member’s price, with significant savings. Best of all there is no minimum membership period, you can opt out at anytime (though why would you!)

What would you say to someone who hasn’t tried floating or the infrared sauna? What are you waiting for??? Seriously, the physical and mental health benefits are amazing. Even people with chronic pain get relief using these therapies. It is a lovely, relaxing space and you will leave nourished and refreshed, wondering why it took you so long to visit and planning your return.

You &Your Pets

We all want our pets to live as long and as healthy as possible, they are the lights of our lives. We can help you in various ways, whether you are welcoming a new puppy or kitten into your family and want to start them on a healthy diet from the beginning, or if your pet is suffering from health issues such as constant licking and scratching, ear infections, poor gut health, an inability to eat a variety of foods, or hyperactivity and anxiety, we are here to help.

Nutrition is just as important for our pets as it is for us, the food they consume can either be their most powerful form of medicine or their slowest form of poison. Just as your GP collaborates with your nutritionist or dietician, and naturopath to ensure your health, we can work with your pet’s healthcare team to achieve the best health outcomes for your pets. During the consultation, we will review your pet’s current diet and any supplements they are taking. Then, we’ll create a custom

FOCUS FEATURE

What does Coffs Kids in Motion do? We are a paediatric physiotherapy and exercise physiology service. Typically we see children with injuries or disability from birth until school leaving, working in a family centred approach. We receive referrals from parents and carers, doctors, allied health professionals, teachers and early childhood nurses.

We see a wide variety of conditions – from a new baby with plagiocephaly (mis-shapen head), to a child having difficulties with toilet training, to that sporty kid with a bit of a niggling injury, to a teenager with Cerebral Palsy who wants to move better. However – you won't catch us treating old people with back pain – kids only here!

Some children are seen in clinics in a traditional face to face appointment. However, we also see many children at home, in schools and preschools or at the park. In addition we offer hydrotherapy, telehealth and many group sessions. In our school holiday groups we

have been partnering with several community organisations to introduce our children with additional needs to the amazing sporting opportunities we have here on the Coffs Coast. This has been a great experience for all involved. We have a few groups of children entering the Coffs Running Festival later this year with our support. They are training hard to participate in whatever fashion is possible for them. Look out for us on the day! Our motto is “Helping Kids in the Coffs Coast Move”.

So, who is Coffs Kids in Motion?

Coffs Kids in Motion was founded by Kay Joseph. Kay is a Specialist Paediatric Physiotherapist, 1 of only 4 in Australia. Kay has over 35 years experience working as a physiotherapist for children. We now have a team of 6 physiotherapists who are all passionate about providing the best evidencebased therapy appropriate for each child. Senior physio Rache, comes with many years of experience both here and abroad. Jess Smoothy is so clever she is completing a Masters Degree

in Paediatric Physiotherapy. Simi and Georgia are our recent grad physios who are learning and growing every day – we are so proud of them. We also have our paediatric continence expert Leah – she will help your child with any concerns with wees and poos!

Our dynamic exercise physiologist Alexandra, keeps everyone on the move, and is truly an asset to our community with her background in both psychology and exercise physiology. Our newest clinical team member is Hannah, who works with us as an allied health assistant. Where is Coffs Kids in Motion located? We have purpose-built clinic rooms in Ted Ovens Drive, down by the Stadium in Coffs Harbour. But we also have outreach clinics in Grafton and Macksville, and soon to be providing services in Kempsey. We are committed to providing quality paediatric physiotherapy across these towns, and have these clinics now working under the banners of “Grafton Kids in Motion”, Macksville Kids in Motion” and “Kempsey Kids in Motion”. It’s an honour to be part of these communities.

Key Community GROUP

Hi Huon, how long have you been going to Key for, and why do you like it?

I’ve been going to Key for about three years now. I like it because everyone is really nice and helps me a lot. I get to do fun stuff like sing karaoke and hang out with my friends. I help at the Key Market stall on Thursdays in the City Centre. I serve people and get them the fresh produce on offer. I am also learning a lot in my work experience at Bellingen IGA.

What is your favourite Karaoke song?

My favourite song to do is “Complicated” by Avril Lavigne. I LOVE IT! I really enjoy performing in front of people.

What have you been enjoying most about working at IGA?

The best part about working at Key is the genuine relationships formed with participants and colleagues which creates a sense of community. Key Community Group is not just a workplace it’s a family. We chat to new staff member Mikaela about why she loves working at Key.

Hi Mikaela, tell us a bit about yourself and why you love working in disability services.

I’m a Coffs local and just love helping my community and the people within it. I have a Diploma in Community Services and have been an NDIS support worker for the past 2 years. I was drawn to this industry because of my own personal history with disability and chronic back pain. My ultimate goal is to give back and help others the way I have been helped. What attracted you to Key Community Group?

I heard Key’s CEO speak at a networking event and just loved how genuine she sounded. She was clearly very passionate about Key and in particular her staff and participants. Key’s commitment to family values and to providing truly local and supportive services made me

think, this is the perfect place for me. What was your first impression of Key when you started?

From day one, I felt welcomed and valued. The team here is incredibly supportive, and the culture is genuinely caring. It's clear that everyone is dedicated to making a positive impact in the lives of our participants, and that sense of purpose is really motivating.

Can you share a bit about the work environment at Key?

The work environment is fantastic. We have a collaborative atmosphere where ideas and feedback are encouraged. The management team is approachable and always open to suggestions on how we can improve our services. But it is working with the participants that brings the most joy – there is nothing quite like seeing the smile on a client’s face when they reach a new milestone. What makes Key stand out compared to

other organisations?

What sets Key apart is its genuine commitment to family values and community. It's not just about providing services; it's about building relationships and fostering a sense of belonging for both participants and staff. Not to mention the amazing facilities with beautiful gardens and outdoor spaces that provide so much opportunity for community participation for our clients.

GABRIELLE MALTRAVERS

Can you tell us a bit about yourself and your background?

I have a passion for floristry and love meeting new people. Travelling and going to the beach are my favourite pastimes. I enjoy watching movies for entertainment and I stay active by going to the gym regularly.

My work history is in beauty and massage therapy, but I am very keen to explore other opportunities in different industries like Hospitality, or Retail. I have my RSA and RCG and have recently completed a bar skills short course.

about hiring someone with a mental health condition. This can be discouraging, as it feels like an additional barrier to proving my capabilities.

What would you say to an employer who is hesitant to hire you? My experiences have made me great at problemsolving, I’m resilient, and adaptable. I'm also dedicated and creative and I would be incredibly loyal to an employer prepared to give me a chance.

I have my RSA and RCG and have recently completed a bar skills short course.

I think most people these days have been touched by mental health in some way and yet there is still such a stigma associated with these conditions.

Tell us a bit about yourself and the type of work you are interested in? Hey, I'm Max. I’m 22 years old and I live in Toormina. I love gardening, landscaping and mechanics. I also love making jewellery. I love being outdoors but would love to work for any company that is prepared to give me a go. I just want to work.

Can you share any challenges you have faced in your job search? One significant challenge is getting employers to give me a fair chance when they learn about my mental health barriers. Despite my qualifications and skills, there's often a hesitation or uncertainty from employers

Key Community Group have been a great advocate by providing awareness to employers to avoid such stigmas. Giving me a chance also gives you a chance to show the community you are a company that values diversity. You’d be a company I’d be proud to work for.

What are your unique skills and abilities that would make you an excellent employee? One of my unique skills is my incredible attention to detail, which comes from my highfunctioning autism. This makes me exceptionally task-oriented and reliable. I am also fit, strong, and hardworking, always ready to take on physically demanding tasks. I work best in smaller teams or independently, allowing me to concentrate and work methodically.

What are some of the challenges you might face in work and how would you overcome them? One challenge I might face is adjusting to larger teams or highly dynamic

environments. I overcome this by seeking roles where I can work in smaller teams or independently, which allows me to focus and perform at my best. Effective communication with my team and supervisors can help ensure my unique needs are met and Key Employment can help me and any employer with this as well. Why is work important to you and what would it mean to you if someone gave you a chance? I just want to work so bad. I am very reliable and hardworking and if someone could give me a chance it would mean so much to me and my family. I am not just a person with a disability, I would be an asset to your team. By hiring me you would get someone who is dedicated and grateful and extremely reliable.

UNLOCKING POTENTIAL:

THE POWER OF INCLUSIVE HIRING

In today’s dynamic business landscape, diversity is no longer just a buzzword; it’s a strategic advantage. Forward-thinking employers recognise that a diverse workforce brings fresh perspectives, creativity, and resilience to their organisations. But what about hiring individuals with illnesses, injuries, or disabilities? Are we fully tapping into this valuable talent pool?

One in five Australians live with disability. This represents a vast pool of talent which employers can tap into, to enhance workplace diversity and overcome labour shortages.

When we hire someone with unique abilities, we unlock a wealth of hidden strengths. These individuals often possess exceptional problem-

solving skills, adaptability, and determination. Their resilience in the face of adversity can inspire entire teams. Imagine the positive impact on workplace morale when colleagues witness first hand the triumph of human spirit.

Employers who embrace inclusivity create a positive workplace culture. This makes employees feel valued and respected, leading to increased job satisfaction and productivity. When we celebrate differences, we foster an environment where everyone can thrive and feel they belong. It's clear that when you hire someone with an injury, illness, or disability, you create a ripple effect. It’s not just about that individual; it’s about changing perceptions, breaking down barriers, and building a more inclusive society.

Yet just a few months ago, Scott grappled with despair, battling anxiety and depression while struggling to provide for his family.

Scott, a proud Coffs Harbour local and devoted father of two, is an exemplary employee. However, two-years ago, he endured a debilitating workplace injury that left him with three popped vertebrae and significant nerve damage. His road to recovery spanned a gruelling year of intensive physiotherapy and rehabilitation. Eventually, Scott managed to re-enter the workforce and began looking for work. He was connected with two recruitment companies through his workers’ compensation, one in Sydney and another in Brisbane.

WORK INJURY

These opportunities were hundreds of kilometres away from Coffs Harbour and didn’t align with Scott’s personal work preferences, nearly extinguishing his hope. Feelings of anxiety and self-doubt took over, leaving him

believing he could never adequately provide for his family.

Having been a previous customer of Enterprise and Training Company (ETC), Scott reconnected with the not-for-profit organisation, knowing they could help.

“Being unemployed was a terrible experience,” Scott admitted. “It was frustrating, infuriating, and it made me feel incredibly low, sad, and angry.”

Since our first meeting, I’ve witnessed nothing but a can-do a itude from Sco . He’s consistently reliable, punctual, and displays remarkable initiative.

With a bit of guidance from ETC’s Disability Employment Services program and through their extensive network of local business contacts, ETC swiftly matched Scott with a suitable employer and introduced him to Daniel at Pharo Cleaning.

Daniel, Coffs Harbour’s branch manager, had diligently expanded the business from just three employees to ten in a mere 18 months, making it the perfect time to introduce Scott.

“Since our first meeting, I’ve witnessed nothing but a can-do attitude from Scott. He’s consistently reliable, punctual, and displays remarkable initiative,” said Daniel.

Scott initially joined as a part-time employee but quickly proved his value and was soon offered a full-time position.

“I want to see Scott continue achieving success and become more confident. Ultimately, I envision him as my right-hand person,” Daniel expressed.

Pharo Cleaning, an environmentally conscious cleaning services provider, has been serving the Coffs Coast for over a decade, reflecting its commitment to both its employees and the community.

ETC Recruitment Advisor Georgina said, “Scott’s world view of being open to accepting help in the midst of the challenges is really what has allowed him to succeed and receive everything he has now.”

“ETC wants people to succeed and when our customers believe it’s possible, that’s when magic happens.”

Scott is back on track. He said, “Mentally, I’m in a great space right now. There are no financial issues I am worried about. My home life is a lot better, and I am a lot happier!”

Amanda Taylor

Amanda Taylor recently embarked on a transformative journey in her career and took a leap of faith, leaving her full-time job in community services to be able to offer her own recovery support services to individuals living with a psychosocial disability. Amanda’s decision to offer her own recovery support services stems from her deep -rooted belief in the power of transformation and a genuine desire to make a positive impact.

Hi Amanda, tell us a little about yourself.

I am a dedicated mother of two wonderful daughters, and I consider this role to be the most important one in my life. Originally from Sydney, I made a life-changing decision in 2015 to relocate to the beautiful Coffs Coast. For the past 14 years, I have been actively involved in the community services industry working for various nonfor-profit organisations, where I have gained invaluable experience and knowledge. My journey has led me to achieve tertiary qualifications in community services and mental health, alcohol, and other drugs. I am particularly passionate about trauma-informed

care and bring extensive expertise in this area to my work. What sets me apart is that I am neurodivergent, with a diagnosis of coexisting Autism and ADHD.

This unique aspect of my identity provides me with a distinct set of skills and perspectives, allowing me to approach my work with an increased level of empathy, understanding, and creativity. I am thrilled to announce that I am starting my own business venture and I look forward to contributing my skills, experiences, and genuine care to make a positive impact in the lives of those around me.

My goal is to be a part of creating a thriving and inclusive community that embraces diversity and supports one another.

Can you share a bit about your personal journey and how it has influenced your decision to become a psychosocial recovery coach?

During my teenage years and throughout my twenties I endured a series of deeply traumatic experiences that left me scarred and broken. The pain of domestic violence, sexual assault, and addiction weighed heavily on my spirit. It took me years to find the strength and resilience to overcome these devastating challenges.

I now find myself in a remarkable place on my healing journey, where I can transform the darkness of my past into a guiding light for others. Having emerged from the depths of my own trauma, I have reached a point where

I am truly excited about this new venture and the opportunity it presents to create meaningful change in the lives of individuals.

I am ready and confident to offer advocacy and assistance to those in need of psychosocial wellbeing related support.

How has your own experience with mental illness shaped your approach to supporting others on their recovery journeys?

Through my own journey with mental illness, including navigating medication, receiving a diagnosis and misdiagnosis, and encountering the complexities of the mental health system, I have developed a profound understanding and have an empathetic approach for those who are also battling these challenges.

Having felt unheard and misunderstood at times, I recognise the immense importance of being truly heard and seen in the healing process.

Who and what have played a significant role in your personal and career growth, and what are some career highlights and future goals?

I attribute my career growth to the opportunities given to me by several individuals within the community services sector I have worked for over the years. Their belief in me and willingness to provide me with chances to excel have been instrumental in my professional development.

Additionally, completing various therapies, particularly dialectical behaviour therapy (DBT), has had a profound impact on both my personal and professional life. The skills and insights gained from DBT have helped to shape my approach to providing coaching services. The support of my family and friends has also been invaluable throughout my journey. I must also acknowledge myself, the hard work and

dedication I have put in to reach where I am today wouldn’t have been possible without self-love.

A couple of career highlights that come to mind are the opportunity to attend a two-day workshop with Dr. Bessel Van Der Kolk, the renowned author of "The Body Keeps the Score", and meeting Kurt Fearnley, Australian Paralympian and passionate disability advocate, and hearing his story of resilience and determination.

Can you tell us more about how your new business, Full Heart - Psychosocial Recovery and Mentoring Support and how you aim to make a positive impact in the lives of those in our community?

Full Heart is a recovery support service designed to empower individuals who are seeking to overcome the impact of trauma and the effects of mental illness to improve their quality of life. At Full Heart, mindfulness will be one of the core principles and methods used. I know the power of mindfulness and how it can foster self-awareness, resilience, and overall well-being. With my unique combination of skills derived from tertiary education, industry experience, and personal lived experiences, I am committed to making a positive impact on the lives of others.

I believe that my understanding and genuine approach to someone else's pain is a rare ability, and I will strive to help as many people as I can. I am truly excited about this new venture and the opportunity it presents to create meaningful change in the lives of individuals. I am dedicated to providing a supportive and transformative experience for those I have the privilege to work with.

Thank you for sharing some of your story with us Amanda, where can our readers find you if they wish to learn more about your services?

The best way to get in contact currently is via email at fullheartamandataylor@gmail.com or by mobile on 0434 141 126. We can arrange to meet in person and I can personally answer any questions people may have.

Thanks Amanda.

Northern Prosthetics’ Isles Drive workshop has been open for 5 years this year, and with the addition of the Coffs Hospital Amputee Clinic to their service locations, things are only getting bigger and better. Prosthetist and Coffs Harbour Manager, Erin Herd, is a born and bred Coffs local, and after spending time in America, Melbourne and Sydney, returned home to offer personalised, professional and local prosthetic care to amputees throughout the greater Coffs Harbour region.

Being the only local Prosthetic Service Provider in our region is something Erin and Northern Prosthetics pride themselves on. Having recently been awarded the tender to facilitate the Coffs Hospital Amputee Clinic, means they are able to provide their comprehensive service for more amputees. Fitting new amputees with their first legs and assisting them in those challenging first months of being a prosthetic user is made easier by the fact that their workshop is located just across the highway from the hospital. This means that visits can be arranged quickly, adjustments organised faster, and on-going care and advice is available to our locals.

ProstheticsNorern

The Northern Prosthetics workshop is fit out in a way that means an entire prosthesis can be created in-house; from casting of the residual limb, through to manufacturing and final fitting. Whilst the team in Coffs Harbour is only small, they are backed by their counterparts in Ballina who assist with manufacturing during busy times. This ensures quick turn-around times and gives Erin more time to work face-toface with clients.

Northern Prosthetics prioritises on-going learning and development, so local amputees

can rest assured that they are receiving the same level of care locally that they would in the bigger cities. Their vibrant and welcoming workshop runs by appointment only, so you will be their priority during your appointment. They are NDIS and Enable NSW accredited providers, as well as being willing and able to assist private or insurance clients. If you’re in need of a new prosthesis, liner, or even just a tune-up on your existing device, chat to the friendly team at Northern Prosthetics today on (02) 6650 0027 or coffs@northernprosthetics.com.au

What worries you about aged care?

If you are worried about the need to access aged care, you are not alone.

When the time comes it can be daunting, with a lot of new information to take in and many decisions to make. The responsibility to make the right decision for yourself, or a loved one, may weigh heavily on your mind.

From my experience, four of the most common worries that people raise include:

Quality of care: One of the main concerns is whether the quality of care provided will meet needs and expectations. Reports of inadequate staffing, neglect, or instances of abuse have contributed to this worry. People are often afraid that they might not receive the attention and respect they deserve and want assurance that care will be provided by competent and compassionate carers.

Cost and affordability: Financial considerations are likely to be a significant worry. Costs can vary widely depending on the type of care required and your financial

situation. Understanding what government subsidies are available and how much you will be asked to contribute, as well as how to fund other expenses, requires careful planning.

Access and availability: Many people are experiencing waiting lists and long delays to access aged care services, in both residential and home care. Concerns about the availability of suitable aged care services that meet specific health and lifestyle needs can add to the stress and are a reason for planning ahead. Transparency and accountability: There is a growing demand for transparency and accountability within the aged care sector. People want clear information about the standards of care and safety records of aged care providers. They also want assurance that mechanisms are in place to address any concerns or complaints promptly.

The government has been embarking on a program of change, with aged care reforms to address concerns. The aim is to instil greater confidence that the aged care sector is safe and effective, while improving the overall

experience for older people.

Fear of the unknown adds to stress levels, so start your planning early. Don’t wait for the crisis to occur. Start by talking to me about your future plans and concerns. I can help you sort the financial aspects and direct you to other services and resources where you need further help with choosing, evaluating or understanding how aged care will work. Star ratings on the MyAgedCare website can also help to evaluate and compare providers.

Addressing your worries will require a comprehensive understanding of available options, financial planning, and advocating for the best possible care. These are decisions that are best not to make alone.

As an Accredited Aged Care Professional TM, I can help you get started and remove some of the stress and worry from your future care needs.

If you want to talk through your options or find out more information for your situation, call my office on 0431 414 799 to find out how I might help.

PAUL WATSON

THRIVE PILATES OWNER (WITH MY WIFE, NICOLE)

Can you tell us about your journey in the business world and how you got started?

I was working for the Qld Government and on the verge of a nervous breakdown when my wife - who was working in the fitness industry - asked if I wanted to “move to Coffs Harbour and open a pilates studio”.  I hadn’t done a pilates class before and never run a small business either, so let’s just say the learning curve was steep.

What challenges have you faced as a man in the business industry, and how have you overcome them?

The pilates industry is very heavily female driven and 97% of our membership base is female so I have definitely had to navigate some interesting conversations in my time.  I would be lying if I said it has been easy, but I just took the approach that I am here and part of the place so we just have to get used to each other together.  I must admit that now I don’t really think about it too much, but I have definitely learned when to leave the room - haha.

Do you have men in the studio?

We do have some men in the studio. Some have come with their wives and fallen in love with it whilst others have come to manage injuries and general ailments.  Pilates has been proven to be just as beneficial to men as it is the ladies - after all, Joseph Pilates started it all - so we are always keen to share the pilates love with more of Coffs Harbour’s male population.

How do you balance your professional and personal life?

You can do that?

Can you share any future goals or plans for your business?

We have kicked off small group options to supplement our very successful larger group classes and have some big (some would say mega) things coming up in the very near future -  who knows, we might even get some of the blokes in as well.

What is your leadership style, and how do you motivate your team? A good leader is someone who will get in and do the hard yards alongside their team. But I also believe that great leadership is built on trust. So once you have built that trust within your team, that’s when you will reach new heights in your business together.

What role do you believe mentorship plays in professional development? Mentoring is a key to success. Personally it played a huge role in me getting to where I am today. I was lucky enough to

DOBBS & CO.

LICENSED REAL ESTATE AGENT

How long have you been selling real estate on the Coffs Coast? I’ve had the pleasure of selling real estate on the Coffs Coast for 22 years. During this time, I’ve developed a deep understanding of the local market, its unique characteristics and the needs of both buyers and sellers in the area. This has allowed me to build a strong network of connections with local businesses and residents.

How do you balance your professional and personal life? Spending quality time with family and close friends is first and foremost. Real estate can be consuming, working long hours, 7 days a week, so setting some boundaries keeps you fresh. I’m up with the sun most mornings. My wife and I use this time to run, walk or surf with our sons, then I’m set to do anything at work for the day ahead.

What are you looking forward to in the future with Dobbs & Co.? It’s exciting to be amongst such a dynamic team with a proactive approach to the new modern era of real estate. Thinking outside the box is in my DNA and I hope to contribute to this fresh team of professional agents.

Dobbs & Co. was launched on the 20th October 2022, we are currently 21 months in business and have sold over $65m worth of property on the Coffs Coast in this time. Can you share any advice on building a strong personal brand in the business industry? Personal branding and marketing are something I have always tried to maintain within our industry that has lots of solo agents from a vast number of agencies. Since launching Dobbs & Co. my goal has been to offer a tailored approach for our clients, not just with their experience but also the marketing we can offer. We are very proactive on social media and with video content around the properties we are marketing. This has led to us not just reaching people locally but also internationally and being able to sell to those buyers overseas with the reach we have been able to gain with the campaign tailored to that property. On the road you will see two of our work cars that have been wrapped driving around which are great for brand awareness for our business, and we often receive lots of positive feedback about them, especially DOBBS2 the “cute” green one.

I was living in Armidale and when I had finished school, I was looking for an apprenticeship to complete. I approached the Course Superintendent at Armidale Golf Club – fortunately, they had a position available, and I started my apprenticeship just a few weeks later. I was working at Armidale Golf Club until I moved to the Coffs Harbour area in 2016 where I continued employment in the Sports Turf Industry. I started at the Sawtell Golf Club in 2023 as Assistant Superintendent, and later becoming the Course Superintendent.   What is your leadership style, and how do you motivate your team? I like to offer guidance and a friendly approach. I strongly

encourage my team to have input into course projects and the day-to-day operations. I have a great team and value their opinions and ideas.

How do you stay updated with the latest trends and innovations in the industry?

Some of the ways we stay up to date with the latest innovations are by attending conferences, reading publications distributed by other representatives in the industry and liaising with course staff from around our region that may be trailing new methods or programs on their course.

How do you handle failure and setbacks in your business? We handle failure and setbacks as a learning opportunity and reflect on these moments to improve and review our practices when needed.

Can you share a memorable success story or achievement in your career?

The recent completion of the Wholechild Daycare in Armidale was our biggest and toughest project so far. With almost ten tonne of glass and a team of four, I definitely had my doubts, but we powered through as the dream team and this made me incredibly proud. This achievement made me realise I AM and MY team are capable of more than we think. How do you handle failure & setbacks in your business?

I’m still searching for that secret! But I’ve definitely learnt from past mistakes and being more present to my reaction. Trial and error is a great lesson, and when I hit a setback I like to consult with my employees. Not only do they keep me cool, but it builds trust and team work.

How do you foster a positive & inclusive work environment for your employees?

With a small team of four, including a female apprentice, it’s important to keep communication open and honest. We have regular team toolbox meetings giving everyone an opportunity to discuss issues that arise, feedback and suggestions. I love recognising my employees hard work and achievements with a morning coffee or a pub lunch. How do you balance your professional & personal life?

I think a lot of business owners can agree switching from tradie to Dad just like that is tougher than it sounds. A quick surf or walking the dog before I enter Dad mode helps me process the day I’ve had and be more present when I get home.

I’m also incredibly lucky to have a patient and supportive wife who has been instrumental in our business success. We find great communication is a key factor in our work/home life.

Can you tell us about your journey in the business world and how you got started?

After completing my apprenticeship, and getting married, my wife and I decided to move to QLD for her to study. While there, I changed roles from being on the tools to sales and started working for a Global Power Tool Company. After 5 years, in the middle of COVID and now our daughter to consider, we decided to move back to the beautiful Coffs Coast. After a year of being back in town, we decided to launch Woods Air Supply to provide a specialised, tailored approach to providing comfort in any home or business. Now, a year later, we have been privileged to provide air conditioning and refrigeration services to 100’s of local homes and businesses giving them peace of mind that their in-home comfort and/or business operations are our priority. What role do you believe mentorship plays in professional development? I believe having a mentor that has been

There is no better option than having a person that has made the mistakes, achieved the milestones and established a successful brand and business in your corner assisting you with your professional journey. We are super blessed to have great relationships with multiple entrepreneurs that we can freely communicate with to assist and guide us on our professional journey.

Can you share any future goals or plans for your business? Being a young, small business is hard work and we take immense pride in the services we provide. SARE PRE-APPROVALS REALLY WORTH IT? with DEREK

ecuring finance is pivotal in most property transactions. However, over the past two years, rising interest rates coupled with increased property prices have made this task increasingly difficult. This shift has led many prospective buyers to rely on mortgage brokers and pre-approvals as their initial steps. But are pre-approvals genuinely worth the effort and reliance they receive?

A pre-approval, often considered the first formal step in the property buying process, is essentially a lender’s indication of their willingness to loan a specified amount based on a preliminary assessment of the buyer’s financial situation. This provisional agreement can provide buyers with a degree of certainty and a clear budgetary guideline before they commence their property search. However, it is crucial to understand the nuances and limitations of pre-approvals. Firstly, it’s important to recognise that a pre-approval is not a guaranteed loan. It is a conditional offer that hinges on several factors. Final approval is required once a buyer has found and negotiated on a suitable property. It is contingent upon the lender’s review of the proposed property, including a valuation report in most cases, as well as any potential changes in the buyer’s financial circumstances. This means that the final loan amount might differ from the pre-approved amount, or in some cases, the loan may not be approved at all.

The conditional nature of pre-approvals often leads to misunderstandings among both borrowers and sellers. There can be instances

where pre-approved buyers have successfully negotiated a purchase price, only to find that their full finance approval request is denied. Reasons for this may be out of the borrowers control, such as low valuation reports or valuation reports with property issues or concerns. More commonly seen, but not limited to, private sales and auctions, is where the lender may decline a property though the buyer will remain pre-approved and able to renegotiate or withdraw their offer and continue to look for other suitable properties. In other circumstances, a borrower’s circumstances may have significantly changed since the time their original pre-approval application was submitted. There may have been some changes that have had a significant impact on their borrowing capacity, such as a change of job, increased debts, late payments on other existing debts, etc, and in some cases these changes can result in a loan denial by their lender.

Despite these potential drawbacks, pre-approvals offer several significant advantages. One of the primary benefits is that they provide a clear understanding of your maximum borrowing capacity and limitations, which can help narrow down your property search and can save time once an offer is accepted. This is especially crucial in a rising interest rate environment, where borrowing capacity for most people is lower than it was over the last year or two. By knowing your budget, you can focus on properties within your price range and avoid the disappointment of falling in love with a home you cannot afford.

Money

JORDAN MATTERS

Pre-approvals can also give you a competitive edge in the market. In private treaty sales, having a pre-approval demonstrates to sellers and agents that you are a serious buyer with finance readily available, which can strengthen your negotiating position and potentially lead to a more favourable purchase agreement. Moreover, the pre-approval process can be beneficial in identifying any issues in your credit history that may hinder your loan application. This early detection may allow you to rectify these issues before you find your dream property, improving your chances of final loan approval when you do make an offer.

Maintaining clear lines of communication with your mortgage broker throughout your property search is also crucial. Even after obtaining a preapproval, you should keep your broker updated on any changes in your circumstances between getting pre-approved and making an offer on a property. This ongoing communication ensures that you are well-prepared for final approval and can address any potential issues promptly. In conclusion, while pre-approvals are not without their limitations, they offer a valuable tool in the property buying process. By providing clarity on your maximum borrowing capacity, giving you a competitive edge, and helping to identify and address any potential issues early on, pre-approvals can facilitate a smoother and more informed property search. However, it is vital to approach them with an understanding of their limitations and to keep an open dialogue with your mortgage broker to navigate the process successfully.

The

OLYMPIAN

Scrolling through Instagram last week, I came across a meme which said “Anyone can call themselves an ‘Aspiring Olympian’ - there’s no paperwork you need to fill out” (to give yourself that status). While many of us are probably not (realistically) aspiring Olympians, we can certainly live our lives as if we are.

I am reminded of a moment from over 20 years ago that forever cemented the Olympics in my heart. It was the year 2000, supposedly a time of serious study as I prepared for my HSC. The Sydney Olympics had taken the world by storm, and like many Australians, I found it nearly impossible to tear myself away from the television.

The sight of Cathy Freeman’s historic gold medal run and the roar of the crowd were as distracting as they were inspiring. Those games, hosted right in our backyard, symbolised not just a national celebration but a global phenomenon that showcased the best of humanity.

The Olympics are more than just an athletic contest; they are a timeless celebration of human potential and perseverance. Every four years, we witness stories of personal triumph, national pride, and the spirit that binds us together as a global community.

The ancient Greeks had it right when they established the original Olympic Games as a way to honour the gods and bring people

together in peaceful competition. Today, the Olympics continue to serve as a reminder of what we can achieve when we push the boundaries of human ability.

One of the most remarkable aspects of the Olympic Games is its ability to inspire people from all walks of life. Whether you are an elite athlete or an everyday person, the Olympics provides a platform for dreams and aspirations. The notion about us all being aspiring Olympians is not about having world-class athletic skills, but rather about embracing the values of determination, excellence, and sportsmanship in our daily lives. We may not all have the opportunity to compete on the world stage, but we can all strive to embody the Olympic ideals in our daily pursuits.

The Olympic Games also serve as a beacon of hope and unity in a world that often seems divided. In times of conflict, the Olympics remind us of our shared humanity and the possibility of coming together despite our differences. The sight of athletes from rival nations exchanging handshakes and embraces is a testament to the power of sport to transcend politics and foster goodwill. This spirit of camaraderie is perhaps the most

Let’s draw inspiration from the Olympic ideals and strive to live up to their example in all aspects of our lives.

enduring legacy of the Olympics, one that continues to inspire generations.

The economic and social impacts of hosting the Olympics are enormous. Host cities and nations benefit from infrastructure improvements, tourism, and a boost in national morale. The Sydney 2000 Olympics, for example, left a lasting legacy of worldclass sporting facilities and enhanced global recognition for Australia. These benefits extend beyond the immediate aftermath of the games, contributing to long-term growth and development. The Olympic Games are a vital part of our global heritage. They encapsulate the spirit of competition, the joy of achievement, and the power of unity. As we continue to navigate the challenges of our modern world, let’s draw inspiration from the Olympic ideals and strive to live up to their example in all aspects of our lives. Whether we are studying for exams, like I was during the Sydney 2000 Olympics, or chasing our own dreams, let us remember that the true essence of the Olympics lies in the relentless pursuit of excellence and the celebration of our shared humanity.

What inspired you to run for Mayor? ’m deeply passionate about our community and believe in the power of positive social change. Although, council bashing is almost sport in Australia, including in our community! It’s easy to complain, point fingers, and say how things should be done… It’s not as easy to put your hand up and do the work to be part of the solution, especially with the criticism, judgment, and doubt that comes with publicly trying to make a positive change. Often, when things are challenging, people shy away from having those awkward and honest conversations needed to work through differences, mend fractured relationships, and rebuild community trust in council.

I’ve demonstrated over the past two terms that I am absolutely here for having those conversations. While it’s been challenging and exhausting to constantly champion this work as a councillor, as mayor, I will have greater capacity to lead the efforts needed to ensure our council and city are something we can all be incredibly proud of as a community. What specific issues or challenges do you plan to address if elected as Mayor? I’m excited to focus on improving our community by getting the little things right, so people trust us to take on the big things. By reviewing and improving our levels of service, we can get on top of the everyday issues that often attract criticism—like looking after mowing, paths, and parks. These are the things people interact with every day, and by addressing them, we can rebuild trust and show that we’re capable of tackling bigger projects.

A big part of effectively serving a community is communicating what we are doing and why. Transparency isn’t just a buzzword—it’s a necessity. Let’s focus on making sure everyone feels heard, seen, and valued in our city. By doing this, we’ll be better positioned for major initiatives like the jetty revitalisation, addressing social challenges, and supporting economic development and opportunities.

I believe in our potential to make meaningful progress and see our city flourishing.

TEGAN SWAN

Being experienced as a Councillor, what do you consider the most important issues to address? Community expectations are always evolving. The key to our jobs as elected representatives is to listen—really listen—and be willing to adapt to their changing needs. Sometimes it feels like being a parent, but on a much larger scale! Trying to balance competing expectations and priorities can be challenging but those differing perspectives are the key to getting the best outcomes for as many people as possible.

Currently the most significant issues impacting our community every day relate to the cost of living and housing crisis. While we can’t solve these problems single-handedly, we can collaborate with others and take actions within the areas where we have authority and influence. These combined efforts contribute to improving the standards of living for our entire community.

As a city we want to be thriving, not just surviving.

What steps will you take to ensure transparency and accountability in local government? I’ll keep doing what I’m doing, even if it ruffles some feathers. We need to have uncomfortable and honest conversations. It’s always okay to ask tough questions. If there’s nothing to hide, there’s nothing to hide. How do you plan to engage and involve

the community in decision-making processes? I want to encourage all councillors to embrace talking to the community and media. I plan on supporting all of us to be visible and available, rather than reprimanding and punishing councillors who try to do that. I’d like to take our council meetings on the road and introduce listening circles and community conversations, both online and in real life. This is something I’ve mentioned previously, possibly on repeat! I did receive a lot of resistance both from council as an organisation and from within the elected group to making this a reality in the previous term so this time, it is something I’d like to get happening asap.

How will you work collaboratively with other local leaders and organisations to achieve your goals? I’m a huge fan of collaboration. I’m very grateful for the relationships I have within the community. Both this term and last, I have put a lot of effort into maintaining my relationships with other councillors, councils’ staff, state and federal representatives. There will always be disagreements, frustrations and different perspectives. It’s how we work through them that is important. It’s through valuing our relationships and working respectfully with industry groups, business chambers, residents’ associations, and community groups to achieve our common goals.

PAUL AMOS

Paul, you have led the current council from 2021-2024, what stands out to you as some of the highlights of the last few years? There are some big new facilities that we've been able to bring to the Coffs Harbour community. I think most people would agree that the sports and cultural facilities we have now are better than what we had 3 years ago. The fact that we've now got over 100 000 people each year visiting our region specifically because of these facilities has a big positive effect on our town's economy as well as the day to day access it

gives local people. Fortunately we've been able to deliver these projects on the target timeframe and budget which is a big win for everyone involved, as most people would be aware that costs have gone up in so many areas during this time. It really is a testament to the people involved.

Attending the launch of these facilities with thousands of people is an impactful experience that I will never forget, but most weeks I spend doing much smaller meetings. The average week has 10-20 formal events, whether it's briefings, committees, formal council meetings, openings or community consultations. Some

of the smallest events actually show you just how lucky we are to live in such a community. Often these groups will be run by volunteers who have given twenty plus years to an organisation. I think they are really the heart and soul of our town, so I do appreciate the chance to go to these events in my role as mayor.

The other thing that I think stands out is that we've been able to be quite effective in decision making as a group. Being a councillor takes significant time and effort each week and I thank each and every councillor for their time and input. We had five new councillors

who had never been involved before, and they have managed to get up to speed with the meeting processes and preparation that goes along with meetings and briefings, which is quite a learning curve. We don't always agree on everything, that's what democracy is about, but I do believe the current council has reflected a broad cross-section of our community. A functioning council depends on people who can work together in a team despite their

differences, and we have been able to achieve this on the whole.

What do you think the biggest challenges will be for the next council? In talking to people in recent months it’s clear that many households aren’t in the position to have a big jump in rates, so we need to make sure that doesn’t happen. When we came in 3 years ago, we were at a financial crossroads. Many councils around Australia have found themselves in hot water from bad financial management, and that means that either rates go up, services go down or both. We’ve now been able to deliver services for three years in a row without the huge rate rises you’re seeing in some other areas. We’ve also seen some big projects achieved during this same period including stadiums, playgrounds, libraries and bridge works. There is never enough money to do all of the things we would like to do, so as a councillor, you have to be very financially aware and make sure funds are being used responsibly so that the big projects with longterm community impact can happen.

community and so I think I have a good idea about what the majority of people want, but there will naturally be someone who disagrees with certain decisions. Sometimes people will turn it personal, and if that’s the case I think it’s hard for my family at times hearing untrue and horrible things on social media etc, but it’s just part of the gig and I think we have all come to accept that.

As an independent, I don’t have to answer to any political party so I’m happy to stand up for what the Co s Harbour area needs regardless of who is in power at the state or federal level.

The other thing is that this upcoming council election will also have an accompanying poll about the Jetty Foreshores. Not everyone will have an interest in this, but many people use the area for recreation and see the area as significant, so it’s a hot topic. In talking to locals, the vast majority seem to want some action down at the Jetty Foreshores in terms of improving the parklands and community facilities, but not selling the land to developers to build large residential apartment blocks. I am sincerely hoping that the poll demonstrates that this is the community’s stance and we can then get on with making sure the Jetty Foreshores is enhanced to provide more usable community spaces for locals and visitors alike.

What is the biggest challenge about being a councillor? I think just knowing that you can’t please everyone. I talk with people every single day about what they want for the

What would your message be to anyone considering running for council? I would say if you have had roles on community committees or groups and you genuinely enjoy spending time talking to people, reading and considering information and debating what’s best for our community, it is likely to be a role that you will enjoy. There is quite a bit of behind-the-scenes work. Some meeting papers might be up to 800 pages and we generally have about 7-10 days to read these. You get quicker over time at working out what are the really important details, but it can be a little overwhelming at first. I think most councillors probably spend on average at least 20 hours a week on their council commitments in various forms.

You don't have to quit your job or career to become a councillor, but you certainly have to be fairly good at managing the competing demands for your time. Hopefully now with the ability to do some meetings online though, there are less barriers for someone who already has a great career or family caring role stepping into this if they have a strong vision for the future and the time to give to the job.

Finally, we have to ask, will you be running for mayor again? Absolutely. The last term was a shorter one because of COVID. I think we're in a much better position than we were three years ago in terms of community assets, but the job is not done. We have fought strongly to get Coffs Harbour a better deal from the state government on several key things that they have tried to short change us on. As an independent, I don't have to answer to any political party so I’m happy to stand up for what the Coffs Harbour area needs regardless of who is in power at state or federal level. I have had strong encouragement to keep pushing on and that's what I intend to do if voted back in.

Professor John Hurley is an internationally recognised expert in mental health nursing at Southern Cross University Coffs Harbour campus. He says the lack of mental health services in regional and rural settings is worsening the crisis.

Young men are particularly at risk, with suicide now the leading cause of death for men aged 15-44.

While the statistics are heartbreaking, there is cause for hope.

Professor Hurley is leading a team of health professionals who’ve banded together to

train and upskill non-mental health specialists to take on support roles.

We’ve had lots of mums in the group previously, which is great, but there is a real need for dads and other male role models such as teachers and youth workers to take part...

“We’ve previously run a program for parents and carers of older kids on the cusp of adulthood about how to recognise and respond to young people’s mental health needs which was really effective, so we’re trying it again now with parents, carers and teachers of a younger cohort,” Professor Hurley says.

He is calling for more participants to join the free training, called The Lighthouse Program,

an online training program for parents, carers and supporters of 10–13-year-olds with unmet mental health needs in rural, regional and remote settings.

“We are specifically asking more dads to sign up,” Professor Hurley says. “We’ve had lots of mums in the group previously, which is great, but there is a real need for dads and other male role models such as teachers and youth workers to take part and upskill to help young people, particularly young men, who may be struggling.

“This free program provides training with expert therapists, general practitioners and psychologists to equip people with a greater understanding of what causes mental health problems, how to better respond, helpful strategies to manage an anxious child, reduce screen time and to cope with the emotional storms that are typical of that age.

“Every person has mental health needsespecially every young person. Think of all the changes a person goes through between the ages of 11 and 20. So having dads that are skilled and able to respond to the needs of their children can only benefit our community.”

So what are the contributing factors leading

to poor mental health, specifically in men?

“There are greater addiction rates, and men often have fewer social connections than women, and are less likely to be talking to people or seeking help. Men often try to manage the problem themselves, and the further you are from the city, services are fewer and the worse it gets.”

Professor Hurley says another barrier is the way services are structured. Often men would prefer not to sit down in a room with another person to talk about their emotional experiences or problems.

“Many men prefer to do things together. That's why things like men's sheds are quite popular because men tend to like that shoulder-to-shoulder doing something.

“Australia is a bit behind when it comes to prescribing for mental health issues. If you go to your GP and say you’re depressed, you’re more than likely to get an antidepressant tablet, and that tablet's going to increase your serotonin and your adrenaline and your neurochemicals by a certain amount.

“But physical exercise three times a week will give you 50 percent of that. Physical exercise is a huge part of mental health. I've been working in this field for over 50 years and there’s no distinction where mental health ends and physical health begins. My most common intervention that sees the best results? Something as simple as exercising three times a week. Often there’s a social aspect built in, and do it somewhere that's naturally beautiful for an even greater benefit.”

COMPLEX BUT EXCITING

As we navigate the everchanging landscape of education, schools need to remain committed to preparing their students for a complex and exciting future. Schools need to be both values based to nurture productive citizens, while remaining agile and adaptable to ensure students are well-equipped to thrive in an increasingly dynamic world.

Integrating AI-enhanced personalised learning is one of the most significant shifts we’re embracing. This cutting-edge technology empowers our students to shape their own educational experiences, tailored to their unique needs and learning styles. By harnessing AI’s power, we can provide targeted feedback and customised learning pathways, ensuring that every student can take control of their learning journey and reach their full potential. Currently, we have numerous staff and students trialling various AI tools across a wide array of settings. Darren Coxon, AI Education Specialist, recently noted that “AI offers limitless possibilities in providing hyper-personalised learning experiences. Capitalising on these possibilities, in conjunction with traditional learning methods, can lead to the perfect blend of digital learning. By using AI in non-invasive ways, a healthy balance can be achieved in the educational ecosystem, where technology and human interaction complement each other to bring out the optimal learning outcome.” Innovative, agile and adaptive educators are

truly excited by the possibilities in the future but also by the practicalities of now.

We recognise the critical importance of digital literacy and cybersecurity awareness in today’s digital age. At Bishop Druitt College, we are taking proactive steps to equip our students with the skills needed to navigate the online world safely and effectively. From critical evaluation of online information to understanding digital privacy, we are ensuring our students are well-prepared for the digital future without compromising their ability to interact face-to-face. This is why we have implemented a policy restricting the use of smartphones on campus during school hours. The wellbeing of our students is not just a priority; it’s at the very heart of our educational approach. We have integrated comprehensive mental health and wellbeing programs into our curriculum, recognising a healthy mind is essential for academic success and personal growth. Through mindfulness practices and robust support services, we are nurturing not just the intellects but also the emotional resilience of our students, giving parents the confidence that their children are in safe hands. We acknowledge challenges will arise – we are working with children, after all – but we have support mechanisms in place to help them overcome obstacles. This reminds me of a quote from futurist Margaret Heffernan - “If you have never failed at anything, then you haven’t been trying hard enough, aren’t very imaginative, or have had such extraordinarily good luck that

Education Update

FROM BISHOP DRUITT COLLEGE with NICK JOHNSTONE

you have come to believe you are invincible.” Growth often occurs through struggle. Flexibility is key in our rapidly changing world. Our school is working towards a hybrid learning model that can reflect this changing landscape. We look forward to sharing more details about this advancement later in the year.

Perhaps most exciting is our shift towards Deep Learning. This approach moves beyond traditional rote learning or explicit teaching, focusing instead on developing the 6Cs: Character, Citizenship, Collaboration, Communication, Creativity, and Critical thinking. Through Deep Learning projects and real-world applications, our students are gaining the practical skills they’ll need to succeed in the workforce of tomorrow. At Bishop Druitt College, we are not just keeping pace with these educational trends – we are setting the standard. Our goal is to create an environment where students are not just excited about learning, but also confident in their abilities and prepared for whatever challenges come.

As we look to the future, I am filled with optimism. The world our students will inherit is indeed complex, but it’s also brimming with opportunity. By remaining agile and adaptive in our approach to education, we are ensuring that Bishop Druitt College students are not just ready for this world – they are eager to shape it.

SCARLETT

Siblings Scarle (9) and Tommy (7) Lindquist both love training in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and have been heading to some big competitions recently. ey both even managed to bring home a gold at their last comp; the Autumn Australian Open in Byron Bay!

Hi guys. When were you first introduced to Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and what do you enjoy most about it?

We got introduced to Brazilian Jiu Jitsu through our Dad as little kids just wrestling in the living room.

Tommy - My favourite thing about BJJ is learning new techniques.

Scarlett - My favourite thing is the rolling, which is the sparing in class.

Where do you train and how often?

I

a fun game.

Tommy - My favourite training activity is the guard the noodle game. It's where we make a circle around one person guarding a pool noodle. One person gets called in to try and take it out of the circle. It's really fun.

Scarlett - I love the Sumo game we play, and the obstacle course take down drill we do because it can change each time. You guys both compete as well, what do you like about participating in competitions?

like that if we do lose in competition we can learn from our mistakes and go back to the gym and learn new ways to get be er.

We both train at Peak Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. We train at least twice a week but on school holidays we get to train the full 3 days. What is a typical training session like? What are some of your favourite training activities to do?

Starlett - We first line up in belt order to bow in for the class. Then we start a warm up of running, skipping, and stretching followed up by some line drills. After the warm up we get shown the technique of the day and practise the move with a training partner. We then get to roll and train live with all our friends and finish with

Scarlett - I like that if we do lose in competition, we can learn from our mistakes and go back to the gym and learn new ways to get better. But I love getting to use the moves I learn to win by submission in competitions.

Tommy - I just like competing because it's fun and gets me out of my comfort zone. What have been some recent comps you’ve been to and how did you go?

Scarlett - I have been to every Byron Bay Jiu Jitsu Comp last year and the beginning of this year. The last competition was the

Autumn Australian Open and I got gold in my GI division.

Tommy - I also got to compete in the Autumn Byron Comp and got gold in my GI matches as well.

Are there many other kids you know who compete in BJJ tournaments?

Scarlett - I know Toby from Peak who also comes to the Byron competitions, and I get to see my friends from the competitions when we go to Byron, Flora and Caterina.

What are some things we may not know about Brazilian Jiu Jitsu?

Scarlett - That Brazilian Jiu Jitsu was created for the smaller person to get the advantage of the larger person using techniques. What would you say to any other kids reading this who are thinking of starting BJJ?

Scarlett - It can be very fun, but yet very challenging, and you can meet and make lifelong friends. It also makes you feel good when you work hard in the gym.

Tommy - That it makes you feel happy to come play in the gym with friends and gets me out of my comfort zone.

Thanks Kids!

Jade obinson

Hi Jade. You’re celebrating one year since taking over as Principal at Rivers Dance Centre (RDC), what has the last year been like for you since taking the reins?

The past year has been so much fun! Taking over a business that I share so much history with and passion for was nerve-racking, but we feel the transition was really smooth with such positive feedback from families and the community. I definitely had moments throughout the year when making new

decisions and changes of “Is this working or going to work?”. Then we put on a show like our end of year concert, or we take students to an eisteddfod and get AMAZING results and it all feels worth it! Bellingen kids are one of a kind and make this studio really feel like a family.

You have a long standing connection with RDC, where did it all begin and what has it been like returning to where your dance journey started?

I started dancing back in 1999 through to 2011 when RDC was known as Rivers Ballet Studio with Antonia Erskine. It was my favourite place

Jade Robinson started dancing as a student at Rivers Dance Centre in 1999. A er an impressive career in dance both here in Australia and overseas, she returned to where it all started as a teacher in 2020, and has recently celebrated her first year as the new owner and Principal at the Bellingen studio!

left to continue training and dancing in QLD before taking off in 2017 to travel Canada, USA and Europe. I returned to Bellingen in 2020 thinking it was temporary, then the well-known pandemic hit which really threw my plans to travel again. At the time I was distraught, but honestly, everything that came out of that year has set me up to where I am now and I am so grateful. The previous owner, Meryn Jones, heard that I was back and offered some teaching work. I jumped straight on the idea as I had been following her journey of owning the studio for the last 10 years on social media. Everything developed from there! It really felt like a full-circle moment.

Tell us a bit about your career in dance since you left Rivers as a student?

While I was still at Rivers, I went over to New York City to take classes at renowned dance studios like “Broadway Dance Centre” and “Steps On Broadway ''. This really opened my eyes and inspired me to take dancing to the next level and also how much I loved seeing the world. I auditioned for multiple schools in Sydney, Newcastle and Brisbane which were all successful but I felt Gold Coast is where I wanted to be. I underwent 2 years full-time training with ‘Ikin Dance’ when it was run by Anthony Ikin. During this time, I completed my Cert III and IV in Dance and Fitness while also performing in professional shows and gigs

with Agency ‘Chase Creations’. I worked as a cheerleader for the Titans, performed in shows at Movieworld, participated in promotional events for companies like Disney and Mercedes Benz, performed and was part of shows at Jupiters Casino. On top of that I would pick up teaching work up and down the coast for competition teams, private coaching and would lead preschool workshops in daycares and vacation care programs.

What do you enjoy most about teaching the next generation of young dancers?

Their genuine excitement, passion and drive to nail a new step or skill. I love watching the young ones move up groups and remember back to what they once thought was hard is now done with ease!

You have a great team of teachers and staff around you, can you share a bit about them?

We had new students step out of their comfort zones and compete their first ever solos and receiving places – seeing their nerves turn into confidence is a huge highlight.

We have our resident teacher Kim Pedersen who we LOVE. She moved this way with her partner from Melbourne back in 2020 and has made such a positive impact on our RDC family. The kids love her, the choreography and ideas are so creative and so in-line with our values. Her professional dance experience and training is admirable, we can see she has so much to give our students to help with their development and growth.

Antonia Erskine, the founder of RDC, is still our huge supporter working closely with our Cecchetti Ballet Exam students and also with myself. I see Antonia frequently to stay up to date with ballet technique so our students are getting the best education. We are really lucky in our area. I have a great relationship with other studio owners and we help each other out when it comes to finding staff or costuming shows. We have 2 new teachers joining us in Term 3, Ellen Humphrey and Emily Hennessey along with Teo Ross assisting us with the creative direction for our 2024 end of year show while I take some time

with our new baby. We also have our store where we sell uniforms, shoes and accessories that our dear Bev Stollery looks after in the afternoons. She is everybody's Nana, completing sewing jobs and ensuring all of the kids are safe and behaving while waiting before and after class. It wouldn’t be the warm and loving atmosphere it is without her.

What have been some highlights for you since joining Rivers again as a teacher and now Principal?

Our 2023 End of year concert “A Trip To Paris” and “Let’s Get Ridiculous” was the first thing I had the chance to put together with Bec Ross and Kim Pedersen where I could sit back and be like “Yes, I can do this”. We have just completed our Performance Team Season with some students competing in Coffs Harbour District Dance Eisteddfod and the Kempsey Society Dance Eisteddfod. The results at both were astonishing! We had new students step out of their comfort zones and compete their first ever solos and receiving places – seeing their nerves turn into confidence is a huge highlight. They are all so appreciative and love the work that we give them, it's very rewarding.

What are your plans or aspirations for Rivers Dance Centre moving into the future?

Short term, we have just opened up another Performance Team for the under 8’s age group which we are excited to get them trained and ready to take their dancing to the next level. We have a few students doing their Cecchetti Ballet exams this August which we are excited to have more students be part of over the coming years. Our Pilates and Mums & Bubs classes on Tuesdays are starting to take off and we can’t wait to see some more growth here.

We are now working towards our December 7th & 8th End of year concert where our ballet students are putting on the production of “The Wizard Of Oz” and our recreational and performance students will put on a variety section for Act 2 at Bellingen Memorial Hall. Our end of year shows are the highlight of each year for our students, sharing everything they have learnt through the year with their family, friends and our beautiful community. We really put our everything into these shows and can’t wait to share!

Where can we follow along with what’s happening at the studio or get in touch?

You can find us on Instagram or Facebook to stay up to date with what's happening. You can also check out our website for further information!

CWomen Businessin

FROM THE DIGITAL LANEWAY with CATH FOWLER

an you tell us about your business?

Ruby Madden

FLIRT ADULT STORE, COFFS HARBOUR

Flirt first opened in Bathurst on 17th December 2003. The owner saw a need for our business in regional NSW as most adult stores were in city areas. Since 2003, we have grown to now have 15 stores and one of the biggest and most recognised stores in the adult industry.

We not only sell pleasure products, we are renowned in the industry for going above and beyond in breaking the stigma with our safe, welcoming and inclusive stores. Over the last few years Flirt has had some major growth in the mission we aim to bring to our customers and the wider community.

We are excited and honoured to be one of the first adult stores to be helping break the stigma on a wider level. This is being done through Equally Flirty, a new service dedicated to enhancing the shopping experience for everyone, including those with visible and invisible disabilities.

What’s your favourite part of the work you do?

I love to be able to help people. Breaking down peoples worries, fears and misconceptions and

showing them that sex is a natural, normal part of life. I love working in a company that encourages safe spaces for people to discuss their most private issues, and being able to provide that opportunity to feel comfortable for customers to be open and feel heard.

Who is your greatest influence in business?

I have been lucky enough to have a lot of strong business women in my life who have all greatly influenced me.

My Mother has always been an amazing influence in business and management and shown the importance of working hard. From a very young age I have witnessed her hard work and dedication to her role which has instilled a great work ethic in me.

My managers at Flirt have been amazing role models to me. They have not only seen my potential and given me so many opportunities for growth in the company but always encourage me to grow. I have been at Flirt for six years now. I started as a casual team member to now being a Team Leader in our Coffs store and doing graphics for the entire company.

With their encouragement and influence I have had the confidence to lead as they do with me.

What do you love about living and working on the Coffs Coast?

Coffs is a beautiful area with a great community which is supportive and caring. Being able to connect and create amazing business relationships with other local businesses is so important.

We are lucky to have the local support of businesses and customers who value our store and understand we are much more than a ‘sex shop’. The advantage to living on the Coffs Coast is the variety of people, as we are such a tourist hotspot.

What piece of advice would you give women making their way in the business world?

There is no rule book to determine how to make your way in the business world. Facing barriers and overcoming hurdles is what helps you become a better leader.

Work hard for what you want and you will get there. Don’t let people tell you or make you feel like you deserve any less. Surround yourself with people who will work with you for success. How can people learn more about your business?

sport in Australia, starting originally to assist women recovering from breast cancer surgery. CHDBC started in 2008 and now welcomes paddlers of all genders aged between 12 and 90.

According to Anni Yaringa – President of the CHDBC, there will be two full-days of racing.

“Any competing paddler will be on the water many more times than their usual experience at a local regatta,” Anni said. “We will be running a race every 10 minutes over the two days.”

Two workshops will also be on offer, a “drumming clinic” (for paddle timing) and

another focussing on keeping fit for winter paddling with specific exercises for those wishing to improve their paddling technique.

Food and beverage vans will be available over both days and Stoney Park offers on site accommodation from self-contained cabins to free camping, with many water activities for non-paddling friends and families, supervised by life savers. Pets are also welcome on site.

GLASSWORX

JIM & LAURA-BETH

Tell us about your experience in the industry Jim. I’ve been in the glass industry for 15 years, all whilst living on the Coffs Coast.

As a young apprentice I soon realised glass was an essential trade, we all need glass at some stage in our lives whether for a broken window or renovations. This fact also drove my passion to learn more about the forever expanding range and options available within the industry over the years.

Although stock standard glass is still quite popular, TV shows like The Block have given people the confidence and inspiration to take a leap at custom glass. That’s the bit I love!

Each glazier brings a talent to the table and nurturing this is what really makes a business succeed within the industry.

Laura-Beth - Like many trades it’s very male dominated and I love seeing women succeed. When we took on a female apprentice last year she also showed us she was an asset to our business. Each glazier brings a talent to the table and nurturing this is what really makes a business succeed within the industry.

What makes your services unique?

Jim - We offer a wide range of glass services for domestic and commercial, but I love a challenge and quite often get thrown the difficult jobs from around the area. This could

also be because we’re the newbie on the block, but I’ll take it.

This has really grown my knowledge and problem solving skills, meaning no job is considered too big or too small. I’ve done glass walled bathtubs, curved glass balustrades and 5 metre shop front panels just to name a few.

Laura-Beth - Our customer satisfaction is a top priority and we aim to exceed expectations with every project we deliver. We are always striving to be better than great, and being on the admin side of the business I know good communication is also a priority for clients. Our biggest job so far is the recent completion

of the Wholechild Daycare in Armidale, proving we are capable of almost any project no matter how big or how small.

Why did you start this business ?

Jim - Laura-Beth has been with me since the early years of my apprenticeship so has unfortunately heard me whinge for many years about my hopes and dreams of having my own glass business. I think during COVID it got a lot of us rethinking our life’s path, and in 2021 we decided to take the leap.

One week after we opened a massive hailstorm ripped threw Coffs and that gave us the perfect opportunity to put our skills to the test, working all through the night helping those

with broken windows and establishing a trusting name for Glassworx.

Even our kids got involved from the beginning helping setup the workshop, placing business cards in letterboxes, they really are our biggest supporters.

We’re pretty lucky to have some neat surf spots on the Coffs Coast so if I’m not surfing a wave, I’m beekeeping or jamming with my guitar collection.

Laura-Beth - Jim is a very talented glazier, and nobody likes seeing talent go to waste. With three young kids and the ending of COVID lockdown, it was already crazy, so what’s a little crazier, we took a chance and haven’t looked

back.

Like the saying goes, behind every successful man, there is a strong woman and I think that makes us quite the team!

Being locals what do you love about the area and how do you spend your downtime?

Jim - We’re pretty lucky to have some neat surf spots on the Coffs Coast so if I’m not surfing a wave, I’m beekeeping or jamming with my guitar collection.

Laura-Beth - We have three very active kids that love outdoors so we spend a lot of our time exploring Coffs and seeking out a good coffee to keep up with them!

How can people find you and make an enquiry?

You can check out our socials, make an enquiry via our website or call into our shed for a chat!

Tony Judge

It has been a privilege to serve this community as a councillor. Most important for me has been the opportunity to help people to deal with their issues and find solutions. That’s what drives me as a councillor and it has given me an insight into how we can do better. That’s my inspiration to run for mayor. We have so many opportunities and so many challenges here in Coffs. First, we need to get the basics right. Our community expects well maintained roads and public spaces. Grass has to be mowed, public toilets cleaned, and community buildings maintained. Those are the things we should all be able to take for granted. We also need to find a long-term solution to waste management that we can sustain and afford.

But council is about more than roads, rates and rubbish. We need to protect the precious environment we all love and prepare for the growing impact of climate change. We urgently need more affordable housing, because it is a problem affecting everything else in our region. We need to foster business opportunities and create careers that will give our kids the option

of a future here in Coffs.

Our community groups need support, occasional funding and a place to meet. They are the glue that holds this community together. We need to celebrate our cultural diversity as we create harmony. We need to celebrate our Gumbaynngirr culture, honestly acknowledge our past and work hand in hand for a better future.

We must meet each of those challenges within our financial means. Our community cannot afford extraordinary rate rises. That means working smarter and working with you. We need to listen more closely, communicate more openly and act on what we hear. We need to work together with neighbouring councils on regional solutions. We need to work much more closely and effectively with other levels of government. Finally, the councillor group has to work effectively together, despite different opinions.

Those are the big challenges confronting the next mayor of Coffs. I believe I have the experience, relationships and energy to work with you in taking on those challenges. I hope we can work on it together.

Advanced MECHANICAL SERVICES

Not long after moving to Coffs Harbour, Craig Markwort and Chris Ranford struck up a friendship, mainly over their common interests and backgrounds. They were discussing their previous business experience one day and realised that with the knowledge they both had, they could open their own business, Advanced Mechanical Services.

Can you tell us a little bit about your background and experience in this industry?

Both Chris and Craig have been in the automotive industry from when they were in their teens. Chris actually started as an automotive technician back in the UK and was lucky enough to work closely with industry leaders in ABS development and fuel injection! He has extensive knowledge with all European cars while Craig actually started out at Toyota and BMW dealerships! His knowledge extends to all Australian models including all-wheel drive and 4x4 cars. Who makes up your team. We have an awesome team of automotive technicians, all from different backgrounds so we have a very broad range of skills. Craig Markwort, Chris Ranford, Liam Watson, Joel Mathewson, Luke Smith, Danial Mcgee, Manraj Randhawa and Mickael Forrester make up the AMS team. Tell us about your range of services. If you own a car, we can help! Think of us as your One-Stop-Shop for all your vehicle’s needs. We pride ourselves on our great service and honest communication. Some of our services include lube services and manufacturers log book services, air-conditioning repair and re-gas, brakes, timing belts, suspension,

pink and blue slips, clutches, batteries, auto-electrical, radiators and even historic registrations for cars over 30 years old! We also offer ground up restoration of your classic vehicle.

We want them to be safe while driving out on the roads, so we go above and beyond to make sure our customers’ cars are maintained to a safe standard.

What do you like best about your business? Considering we both love everything to do with cars, there’s not a lot we don’t love about our business! Working on cars rates very highly, (of course!), along with meeting the wonderful people who entrust us with their vehicles. Troubleshooting and fixing technical problems along with repairing cars gives us great satisfaction, and, who wouldn’t feel awesome seeing a client walk away smiling and knowing their car is in tip-top condition.

What is the secret to your success? Well, we don’t like to give away our secret to success (!) however one of our driving forces behind our success is that we care, and we’re not just saying that! We really care about our customers and we care about their needs. We want them to be safe while driving out on the roads, so we go above and beyond to make sure our customers’ cars are maintained to a

safe standard.

What is the best advice you can give to a prospective customer?

The best advice I can give is “if you have a drama with your car, come and see us asap”. Some problems if left, can be costly and you really don’t want to compromise your safety. Come and see us and we can give you the best advice on your car repairs.

Tell us about your expanding business. We have always done ground up restorations of classic vehicles but now we have had so many clients wanting complete restorations that we have 2 staff permanently dedicated to restoration projects and its growth. We love restoring older cars and our customers love us to restore them.

What do you enjoy most about living on the Coffs Coast? What’s not to love?! The Coffs Coast is just an amazing place to live and work. We enjoy the beautiful weather, the stunning coastline and above all, the people. How can we get in touch? Call in at 6/163 Orlando St or call us on 0431 231 920

TCOFFS COAST

hey say you shouldn’t judge a book by its cover. Well that’s not quite correct from a purchasers perspective when it comes to buying a home on the Coffs Coast! The allure of a property often begins at its exterior - the gardens and landscaping. As an experienced real estate agent specialising in the vibrant Coffs Coast property market, I’ve witnessed firsthand the profound impact that gardens and landscaping can have on property selling prices. Beyond mere aesthetics, a well-designed garden not only enhances curb appeal but also plays a pivotal role in creating a lasting impression that can significantly influence potential buyers in price negotiations.

The Strategic Importance of Gardens and Landscaping. In the competitive real estate landscape of the Coffs Coast, where natural beauty abounds, gardens and landscaping serve as crucial elements in setting a property apart from the rest. A thoughtfully curated garden not only complements the coastal charm but also aligns with the lifestyle aspirations of prospective buyers seeking a blend of indoor comfort and outdoor serenity. Buyers are increasingly drawn to properties that offer well-maintained outdoor spaces conducive to relaxation, entertaining, and personal enjoyment. Whether it’s a meticulously landscaped backyard oasis or a front garden that welcomes with its seasonal blooms, these features not only enhance the property’s appeal but also contribute to its overall marketability and perceived value.

Tips for Spring Gardening and Landscaping. As spring unfolds on the Coffs Coast, harnessing the seasonal energy to optimise your property’s garden and landscaping can yield significant returns. Here are some essential tips to ensure

We

live in a beautif ace! Property REPORT

THE IMPORTANCE OF GARDENS AND LANDSCAPING ON SALE PRICE

your outdoor spaces are primed to captivate potential buyers:

Design with Purpose: Begin by envisioning how each outdoor area can be utilised and enjoyed. Define distinct zones for dining, lounging, and recreation to create a cohesive and inviting landscape.

Embrace Native Flora: Incorporate native plants and shrubs that thrive in the region’s climate. Not only do they require less maintenance, but they also establish a connection with the local environment, appealing to buyers seeking sustainable and low-maintenance landscaping solutions.

Enhance Visual Appeal: Create depth and visual interest by layering plants of varying heights and textures. Introduce flowering perennials, ornamental grasses, and evergreen shrubs to ensure year-round vibrancy and curb appeal.

Define Spaces with Hardscaping: Integrate pathways, patio areas, and decorative elements like retaining walls to define and enhance outdoor living spaces. Choose materials that complement the property’s architecture and blend harmoniously with the natural surroundings.

Enhance Privacy and Soundproofing: Strategically plant trees, shrubs, or hedges to create natural barriers that enhance privacy and reduce noise pollution. Consider evergreen plants for year-round screening.

Focus on Sustainability: Implement eco-friendly practices such as mulching to conserve water and improve soil health, as well as installing a rainwater harvesting system to sustainably irrigate your garden.

Illuminate with Purpose: Enhance nighttime

ambiance and functionality with strategically placed outdoor lighting. Illuminate pathways, accentuate key features, and create a warm and inviting atmosphere that extends the usability of outdoor spaces after sunset.

Regular Maintenance: Establish a routine for garden upkeep, including pruning, weeding, fertilising, and seasonal planting. A wellmaintained garden not only showcases pride of ownership but also reinforces the property’s overall appeal and value.

Outdoor Entertainment Areas: Incorporate features like outdoor kitchens, fire pits, or pergolas to enhance the functionality and appeal of your outdoor spaces. These additions can create memorable gathering spots and showcase the potential for outdoor living.

Water Features: Consider adding a water feature such as a fountain or pond to add a sense of tranquillity and visual interest to your garden. Water features can also mask ambient noise and create a peaceful ambiance.

Seek Professional Guidance: Consult with a reputable landscape designer or gardener who understands the local climate and soil conditions. Their expertise can help refine your vision, optimise plant selection, and ensure sustainable landscaping practices that align with current market preferences.

Gardens and landscaping play a pivotal role in maximising property values on the Coffs Coast. As a seasoned real estate professional, I’ve observed how well-designed outdoor spaces can elevate a property’s desirability and ultimately command a higher sale price. A beautifully landscaped garden and yard is not just an enhancement, it’s an investment in the lifestyle and value of your property on the beautiful Coffs Coast.
