Jenny Mitchison loves her community and a er an unfortunate event she decided to turn it into a positive by selling sunflowers grown on THE PICTURESQUE FARM SHE CALLS HOME WITH HER HUSBAND ROB AND DONATING THE PROFITS TO THE LOCAL RFS. THE IDEA HAS BLOSSOMED INTO A REGULAR FUNDRAISING EVENT THAT BRINGS PEOPLE TOGETHER TO ENJOY THE FARM, take home some gorgeous flowers and support other local community groups and charities.

i Jenny, you have been running sunflower sale days from your farm for a few years now. Can you tell us about how these days run and the purpose behind them? It’s a pick-your-own sunflower day and we invite the public to come to our farm. Everyone can come in and they pick the flowers and then the charity of the day runs the tent where we bundle the flowers and collect the money. s the farmers we take a 50% cut of the sales

400 acres, apart from our house, sheds and where the sunflowers were, was burned out by the bushfires. It was quite traumatic and obviously, we did not have the wedding here.

We just love the idea of having people come out to the farm as we have a beautiful property and we enjoy having people visit.

We used to do the Biggest Morning Tea on our farm and we loved doing that and then COVID hit and we couldn't continue that at the time. This idea sort of evolved from a wedding that didn't happen and the flowers that were left here.

What is the story behind where this idea came from and how it first got started? My niece was going to be married on our farm in 2019. We planted the sunflowers on about a quarter acre block for her wedding, and two weeks before the wedding our whole property,

Everything was black and I remember looking at those sunflowers and thinking ‘go you beautiful things’, giving me so much joy when there was so much not-joyful stuff happening around us. My daughter and I, who also lives on our property in her own house, got together and picked as many as we could and sold them at Tinonee Carols By Candlelight. We were overwhelmed by people wanting them, and then we gave the money to the local fire brigade as a thank you because they had saved our houses from burning and it was like a little moment of joy to be able to give back. Unbeknownst to us, COVID was the next thing that happened in 2020. My daughter works at the Taree Hospital, and it was quite obvious to her the stress and the sadness of COVID, and she said “Mum how about we do a ‘Pick your own sunflower Day’. So she put it on the local business pages of Wingham Taree, and we were able to have a lovely amount of people come out and we raised some money which we donated to the local hospital. My daughter, who lives in Sydney, God bless her, said “Mum, you need your own Facebook page”. I didn't even have Facebook, I still don't, but she said “I'll set it up for you”. That week she put it on Facebook and we had hundreds and hundreds of people turn up at the farm. What have been some of the community projects or groups that you have donated to so far and how do you choose them? The fire brigade comes and does our traffic control now and we’ve partnered with them and arrange donations for them every week that they do that for us. Taree Hospital, Tinonee Public School P&C, sporting groups like local hockey, a ballet school, and a cancer assist group. Basically we look for not-for-profit, hard working community groups and charities, anything that is going to benefit the community in some way. People will sometimes contact us through our Facebook page, any genuine community based organisations will go on a list and we organise it from there. What do you most enjoy about this

project?

The joy of seeing people having so much fun just fills my husband and I up, we just love to bring that to our neck of the woods and especially when there’s so much sadness in the world.

I just love giving back to the community. The main thing is the joy on people's faces. Overwhelming! Every weekend we shake our heads in wonder. I just can't believe so many people are loving coming to the farm and picking flowers. It's the joy of giving, they know they're giving to a charity too. Nobody is unhappy. A couple of weeks ago, they sat in the car for half an hour to try and get in the gate. We were busy on the paddock and when we heard that I thought

‘how terrible!’ and the fireman said no one was upset about it. Everyone just said it was worth the wait! The community have been overwhelmingly generous, overwhelmingly supportive, and it just shows that there is a lot of love and generosity in our community. Where can people find out more info or keep track of when the sale days are happening? We have our own Facebook page thanks to my daughter who runs it for us. It's called Mountain View Sunflowers. We've got about 3000 followers now, so people connect to that and they can see when our next pick is. My daughter is amazing. She set up this whole page so she'll let people know when we're planting and it takes 12 weeks from planting to picking again, so people can put it in their diary. i Ros. How did your journey as an artist begin and what inspired you to start expressing yourself through art?

My artistic journey began organically, fuelled by a love for creation and experimentation. From doodling in school to exploring various mediums such as scrapbooking and printmaking. I found art to be a therapeutic outlet and as I grew, I realised its profound impact on emotions and perspective. I embrace experimentation and have explored traditional and digital forms, believing in the power of art as a means of communication. Witnessing its transformative impact, I remain committed to lifelong learning and find inspiration in nature, emotions, and cultural dynamics. Each piece reflects my personal and artistic growth, a testament to my continuous creative exploration. Can you describe your style of art, and how it has evolved over time? My art is deeply rooted in contemporary expression, characterized by bold colours, intricate mark-making, and layered textures. It's a reflection of my personal connection to the subjects and themes that captivate me. Through vibrant hues and dynamic compositions, I aim to convey a visual narrative that resonates with both my aesthetic

preferences and the emotions inspired by what I'm drawn to. What are your preferred mediums and techniques?

I draw inspiration from the things I love, with a focus on birds, modern interpretations of the natural environment, particularly coastal and rural landscapes, and the representation of women. The woman is a central theme in my art practice, adding a human element to the visual narratives. These elements collectively serve as the driving force behind my art, influencing the vibrant colors, textures, and themes that I incorporate into my work.

I primarily work with acrylics on both canvas and paper, employing brushes and palette knives in my creative process. Can you walk us through your creative process, from conceptualisation to the finished piece?

I initiate my artwork with a rough idea, sometimes mapping out a draft, and then allow my artistic intuition to guide its evolution. I often work on two parallel pieces simultaneously, finding larger scales more liberating than small canvases. To ensure completeness, I let a piece sit for a while, returning over a few weeks to add small final touches. I've actively participated in several local exhibitions, including Northern Exposure 7 at the Glasshouse. I was thrilled to have been selected as the featured artist for a paste-up, pop-up exhibit, thanks to the Port Macquarie Hastings Council. It was an exciting opportunity to share my work in a dynamic format with the local community." I was also in a joint exhibition at Wauchope Art Gallery with Vivianne Hazenveld and Yvonne Keily, and another during the Port Macquarie Artwalk weekend at Arthouse Industries with Skye Petho and Leah Doeland. Additionally, my work was featured in the 2024 Bonny Hills Art Prize. Additionally, the Glasshouse offers a diverse range of workshops, and I recently had the privilege of participating in a masterclass facilitated by Kiata Mason, further enriching my artistic journey.

As an artist, what are your aspirations for the future, and how do you see your work continuing to evolve over time?

I recognize that I have much to learn, and the continuous improvement of each artwork is a priority for me. It’s crucial to me that, as I evolve as an artist, my unique identity remains embedded in every piece.

The mystery plot was what originally drew me into the book, and while it was very intriguing, I found myself more invested in the conversation of ‘if most men think they are good, why are so many women still afraid of them?’ Packed with feminine rage

and the double standards women face in this current modern-day society, I think everyone should read this book.

This book was one of the most thought provoking and interesting books I’ve ever read. I thoroughly enjoyed how Kuang lead discussions on who has the right to write certain books following different cultures, religions, and races. She elaborates on both sides of opinions but leaves you room to speculate what your own opinion is. She also talks about the publishing industry in detail, and how most of the time, a popular book has been selected before it has even been released, making the industry more of a popularity contest rather than celebrating the

talent of an author. It is not very often that I question my ethics and this book really made me reflect, I think only a well written book can accomplish that.

Hi Jon. Your career has spanned a few decades now, with a huge range of different experiences. Can you share some key moments or highlights from over the years? It’s been a career full of ups and downs, as is normal in the music industry. I guess the career highlight for me is to still be loving what I’m doing, doing what I love. I love to sing and to perform, and to see people singing the songs back and getting a kick out of what you're doing. It’s just an incredible exchange of.. love, I suppose.

So yeah, the highlight is just to still be out there doing it, and a long career full of highlights, I suppose. You're known for your diverse musical style. How do you approach the creative process when working on new music, and what inspires your sound? You just don't know what's gonna happen at any time, when inspiration might hit, so just show up. Show up and apply yourself. You can be collaborating with somebody and nothing happens, and then you can walk into the room on another day and it can be amazing. The thing is applying yourself mentally, spiritually and physically. When you’re on the road touring it’s busy and a lot of fun, but I like to put some time aside to plug back into that other side of your brain, so even when you're on the road, you’re always clicking away on something.. some melodies might come, pick up the guitar and some riffs might come.. The best thing about this day and age is the bloody iphones; you can record anything that happens and go back to it later. I’ve got hundreds if not thousands of ideas on my phone! And then when it comes time to seriously start making the record, you find

I remember working with Jeff Barry in Los Angeles in 1981. I was only a teenager, maybe 19, and Jeff Barry was this famous songwriter, he’d written songs like River Deep Mountain High, Be My Baby, all these classic songs that are still around today. I had the opportunity as a teenager to write a couple of songs with him. I

I was in a room with him, and I just couldn’t believe that this guy, who wasn’t a musician, couldn't play, could things out of the air in front of your eyes. It was non-stop. He would be coming up with ideas so fast that I just couldn’t keep up! I was so impressed by him, he was just running on instinct, all this energy would just build up and you could feel the creativity just flying around! It’s hard to explain. Your current tour, The Noiseworks & INXS Collection, is generating quite a buzz and will be hitting Coffs Harbour C.ex on the 23rd Feb! Can you provide a sneak peek into what fans can expect from these shows? Hit after hit really; we play them song for song, Noiseworks and INXS, and it's an assault on everything. Everyone that knows and loves those two bands, you can just gorge yourself on the music. I love playing those songs and the audience certainly loves hearing them. I play them as close to the originals as possible. Certainly when I was playing with INXS all around the world I was playing those songs like the records. The thing about being in a band is you can get bored and start rearranging things, changing melodies, until people can hardly recognise the song. I remember when I would go to see artists and they would play my favourite song, and I wouldn’t recognise it, and I’d feel ripped off! That was always a pet hate of mine. Wow! What a start to the year… I don’t know if it’s wise to admit it, but I’m already tired and we’ve only just started! That’s the funny thing about starting a new year isn’t it?

ost of us rush up to the illusive final week of the year, with excitement and anticipation and for many of us, it’s over before we’re able to say “why not, I’m on holidays” to that second (or third) margarita by the pool. January is often a whirlwind of long summer days and balmy evenings, where routines are a distant memory and mornings slip into evenings without a care; and I think that’s half the “problem”. For most of us, children included, as much as we yearn for a break of routine, there comes a time when we naturally seek to resume a sense of normality. There’s an element of allure to the change of pace summer holidays afford, where breakfasts change every morning, and lunch can easily happen at 2pm because who’s even looking at the time anyway; but I’ve sensed a change in people this last week or so. We’re ready, ready to slip back into that warm reassurance of routine. Of course everyone’s routine is different, but that doesn’t negate the benefit of having one, and realising when it’s time to get back into it. For me, February marks a time of reflection and projection. While in store we are in the final days of selling our previous season’s Spring/Summer collections, we are also eagerly

awaiting our first deliveries that will form our Autumn collection. It’s a fun time when the evidence of last year’s planning comes together and we present an entirely new look and feel for our customers in store. But February is also a time of planning and preparation for me. There’s a lot of travel at this time of the year, visiting showrooms around the country, all with the intention of securing the best of the best for the seasons ahead. Many people are interested in “how” I do what I do. It’s a skill I’ve definitely refined over the 10+ years I’ve been doing it... Of course there are trends, which become apparent after viewing two or three brands, be it colours or styles, but our business model has never been to follow trends blindly. After all, by far the majority of my customers wouldn’t be spotted looking like they’re wearing their shorty pyjamas out in public… ever. With the increase in the accessibility of social media though, sticking to your own vision can become difficult. It’s true that each season there’s often “a look” and as a fashion boutique owner it can be distracting seeing certain trends on repeat, knowing that those trends are not actually for your demographic. The magic happens when you tailor those trends to your clientele and people walk out loving their purchases. That’s when you realise

the power of sticking to your own lane. This summer I have at times felt the pressure of the constant barrage of information that tries to “educate” us on everything from how to clean your shower to what you should and shouldn’t wear over “a certain age”. It’s true that there are always things we can learn from an informative post on Instagram or even TikTok and YouTube, but I often feel less empowered after watching something like this, than I did at the beginning. Along with more information, often comes a level of confusion and insecurity and an acute awareness of “is this right”. I see a lot of this in the shop. We’re questioning our sense of personal style, based on things which often don’t apply to us. We’re questioning which colour jewellery we should be wearing now, and the best one, is it OK to still wear skinny jeans?! Hopefully by now we all know the answer to that is, “Skinny jeans will always have a place” just maybe though, that place isn’t in your wardrobe any more…! So as I sit here and flip through the numerous lookbooks in preparation for my next buying trip you can be sure that I will continue my mission to find not only the most appropriate interpretation of the current trends around, but also ensure we help you harness and retain your personal style, no matter which crazy trend we’re all thrown next! A talented group of Mid North Coast athletes are living their sporting dreams after being selected to represent Australia at the International Cheerleading Union (ICU) World Championships in Orlando, Florida in April.

ollowing a rigorous national selection process that began with a video submission of skills and continued with a live audition for shortlisted athletes from across NSW, SA, VIC, QLD and WA in Sydney, has ended with six Mid North Coast athletes receiving the news they had been hoping for. Port Macquarie locals Anabelle Hicks (13), Bonnie Russell (14), Ruby Revell (15) and siblings Jett (18) and Scout Hodgson (14) train at First State Allstars (FSA) in Port Macquarie; and Loghan Sculthorpe (13) who travels weekly to Oxygen Allstars in Beresfield took some time out to speak with us about their amazing achievement. Congratulations on being selected to represent Australia at the ICU World Championships! How does it feel to have this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity? J – It feels absolutely amazing. I am so proud to be considered among the top 30 Junior Cheerleaders in the country. Wearing the green and gold is a dream come true for me. A – I am honoured and grateful to be given this 38 GREATER PORT MACQUARIE focus

opportunity. I am so thankful for my coaches who helped me get here and I love that I get to share this experience with my amazing cheer friends. What motivated you to pursue cheerleading, and how did you get involved in the sport? R – When I was eight, Mum was looking at extracurricular activities and she heard about FSA opening. I didn’t know a lot about cheerleading, so I went to tryouts, loved it and am now going into my seventh season.

As a team of six from the Mid North Coast, how does it feel to be representing your

S - It means everything to me. These are the athletes I train alongside, we all work so hard, we learn from each other and push each other to be better and better.

Training for such a prestigious event must be intense. Can you share a bit about your daily routine and preparation, including mindset classes, strength and conditioning sessions, and individual training? R - Jett and I are partner stunners on the Junior team, and each week, we get a list of skills and conditioning to complete, including tumbling

and stunting, for us to master. We video these for our coaches who give us feedback to keep us on track. A – Youth have a Mindset and Mobility zoom weekdays at 6:45am which helps with focus and flexibility. On Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, we have a Strength and Conditioning Zoom and weekly homework for conditioning, core, tumbling and stunts that we film and send to our coaches for feedback. You’re doing some fundraising to help cover the costs of the trip to the World Championships. What fundraising initiatives have you got planned, and how has the local community got behind you so far? L - Settlers Inn offered me two meat tray raffles in January, and I am hosting a community scavenger hunt and mega draw raffle in February. I have a GoFundMe running and a few small businesses have come on board as minor sponsors. I am humbled by how much the whole community is supporting my dreams. B – We are incredibly grateful to Springloaded who donated their public holiday trading days to us to run $20 unlimited play sessions. New Years Day and Australia Day were awesome and we

will do another one at Easter. We are also collecting cans, have a group GoFundMe and we are selling bucket hats and T-shirts through FSA. How can people continue to support your fundraising goals?

This is the first time Australia has entered youth and junior teams at Worlds so I am excited to be making history, competing with the best youth aged cheerleaders in Australia, against the best teams in the World.

L - I have put a lot of work into organising community events that are affordable and family focused, and I would love to see people getting involved, having fun and making memories with their loved ones and friends while they're supporting my dreams. And if possible, we would love people to come to our special events at Springloaded or even buy a bucket hat or T-Shirt. What are you most excited about in regards to this trip to the World Championships? S – This is the first time Australia has entered

J – Our group training camps, because we only get to train together as a team three times, challenging myself to nail some pretty hectic stunts and actually competing against the world and seeing how we stack up. What are some of your goals and aspirations for the future? L - My end goal for cheerleading is to make it to the top and be selected for the exchange program with Cheersport Sharks in Canada when I am in my late teens. R – My goal is to compete at more World Championships. I’d also love to coach a World team, and if cheerleading is ever an Olympic sport, I will need to be on the mat for that. s they say… life’s too short. Eat dessert first.

‘Finish your dinner first and make sure you eat all your greens’ you may remember your parents say, ‘or else there won’t be any dessert’. That was the way things were and in childish deference you may well have just accepted this as fact. As we are all well aware now, dessert is supposed to be a ‘sometimes’ food and not a priority, something we fill ourselves up on, and before we imbibe those foodstuffs we need to know that they contain actual nutrients and not an abundance of sugar and fat and all manner of other nasties. Of course now the forbidden fruit of childhood is now tantalisingly ‘on the menu’ whenever and however often we would like. As fully functional, autonomous adults we are quite capable, thanks very much, of making our own decisions on what we put inside our bodies and how often. Surely we are equipped to make rational, sensible and restrained decisions? After all, we are equipped with the benefit of experience now, the wealth of knowledge gleaned from our education, our parents back in the day when they told us we couldn’t, and the

ever present expectations of civilised society around us. This, in no uncertain terms subtly, yet powerfully, dictates that there are certain things it is okay to do, and other things which are not quite the ‘done’ thing.

here did you first meet? At a friend’s birthday party.

Tell us about the proposal? From helicopters to ugly crying, it had it all. Mitch organised a surprise helicopter ride around Kona, Hawaii. Our pilot dropped us at the base of a waterfall and Mitch dropped a knee. Ebony ugly cried. Did you have a theme for your wedding day, if so tell us all about it. The theme was a bit of an eclectic mash, but we wanted it to feel ethereal and elegant so we chose muted tones and vintage decor to achieve this. We also both chose one flower each to incorporate. We got married on Remembrance Day so Ebony chose black and white anemones and Mitch chose king proteas which perfectly complemented to farm aethestic. Where were you married and why did you choose this location? Both our ceremony and reception space are quite sentimental to us. Our ceremony was held 50 GREATER PORT MACQUARIE focus

in Mitch’s Mum’s backyard along the river in Telegraph Point. Our reception was then just a short golf buggy ride up the road to a property which has been in the family for a few generations. The tent was also placed on the top of the hill where we plan to build our forever home one day. Both locations are special because it’s where Mitch grew up. We knew we wanted something a little different for our wedding and just couldn’t pass on such a meaningful opportunity.

Who were some of the businesses you worked with to help create your special day? We were very fortunate to book some amazing vendors who created the wedding of our dreams.

What was your favourite part/moment of the day and why? All of them! There’s magic in all of the moments we shared.

The guys from ‘Thistle Flowers’ transformed both spaces into a wonderland of blooms. We had ‘Char Bar’, ‘Wild Feast Grazing’, and ‘Romeo Luxury Caravan Bar’ as our caterers and our guests couldn’t complement the food and service enough. Another crowd pleaser was our carrot cake from ‘Something Sweet’ by Lizzy. The day was captured forever by ‘Lilly at Dawn Photography’ and ‘Pose it’

Margot Smith was the all important celebrant. Sperry Tents Hunter Valley, Portable Powder Rooms and Magick Events supplied the heavy duty hire items. Glam Squad: Sass and Co Hair, Instill Beauty, Serenity Nails. Musicians: Simon Gudgeon and Andrew Cousins were incredible acoustics to set the perfect atmosphere.

We made sure during our planning that our day reflected ‘us’ and what we wanted, so there were so many little glimmers to appreciate and admire throughout the day. From temporary tattoos to our grandparents doing shots, we really relished each moment. We also loved that we made a constant effort to spend as much time together as we could which means when we look back, we share all our favourite memories together. Looking back, the moment which still gives

Save: Stationery: We used a wedding website and only had printed invitations for a few guests. Menus and name places were also simple. Signage: We didn’t have a welcome sign, table numbers or a seating chart. Decor: We used what we had, bought second hand and asked our vendors. We also reused florals and decor from the ceremony space in the reception space. Favours: Guests were able to take home their photobooth strips as a favour. Accommodation: We got ready at home and stayed there on our wedding night. Splurge: Pyrotechnic Events; The fireworks were a magical part of the night and they kick started the dance floor with a bang! Not a thing; I think trusting the vendors with their expertise and creative flair is what made the day so smooth and enjoyable. (Actually - fireworks, the exact ones from the Joyce wedding, that was amazing!) What advice do you have for couples who are getting married in 2024? At the end of the day, you’re married to your best friend. Don’t forget to prioritise your

friendship first, learn and explore the love languages, and you’ll each feel loved and appreciated. Spend time doing things together and exploring new interests and ultimately, enjoy each other’s company. I began Wild Blossoms in 2020 after completing my floristry certificate at Padstow TAFE. My love of flowers and all things nature has been with me for as long as I can remember. From searching for shells on the beach at Sawtell where I grew up, to bushwalking and stopping for wildflowers along the road as a child. It’s always been there and I’ve always found beauty in a single flower stem, tree or shell. I used to draw trees in art class all the time. Nature is beautiful. We offer a full wedding floral service from our ceremony aisle runways, plinth and arbour floral installations, which do require on site set up and pack down on the day. This means you don’t have to worry about a thing, other than enjoying yourself with your family, friends and guests. We’ve got you covered. How do I preserve my bouquet after the wedding? There are so many options now to preserve your bouquet to ensure your memories live on after your special day. Hi guys, can you tell us a bit of your back story about how you both came to be musicians? Phil: My journey as a musician started when I had the opportunity to attend a boarding school where I met one of Australia's greatest

guitarists, Struan Smith. He wrote a book on classical guitar, and I consider myself extremely fortunate to have learned from him. While some may say I am lucky to have the talent, I say the more I practiced the luckier I got. I later studied at the Sydney Conservatorium, where I delved deeper into music theory, composition, and performance, expanding my musical horizons and refining my craft. Along the way, I had the privilege of playing guitar alongside artists like Tommy Emmanuel and working with renowned musicians like Ian Moss. One of my proudest moments was collaborating with Pink. When it comes to vocals, I owe a lot to my

older brother, who taught me the art of vocal harmonies. We would spend hours harmonizing to our favourite songs, creating magical moments that ignited my passion for classic rock and built our extensive repertoire of songs. Elke: My journey becoming a musician was in pursuit of a shared dream and a testament to the power of music and love. While my story may not be as glamorous as Phil’s, I have always had a deep love for music. From a young age, I dedicated myself to dance and later attended performing arts college. It wasn't until I met my brilliant husband that I truly discovered my inner diva. He has been my guiding light, giving me the tools to become proficient on the guitar, bass, and piano. With his guidance and support, I started exploring my vocal range and developing my skills as a percussionist, playing the cajon and harmonica in our duo. Together, we have created a harmonious collaboration that allows us to share our passion for music with others. How would you describe your style of music and performance? Our style of music and performance can be described as dynamic and versatile. We adapt our style to suit any situation, ensuring that

we create an exciting atmosphere that engages our audience. We prioritise creating a fun and enjoyable experience for our audience, and we believe that the more fun they have, the more enjoyment we have as well.

What truly makes our performances unique is our interactive approach. We love involving the audience in our shows, creating a sense of connection and shared experience.

One of the things that sets us apart is our diverse repertoire of cover songs. We cover various genres and eras, making sure that there is something for everyone. Whether it's pop hits or rock classics, we put our own twist on each song, infusing it with our signature acoustic style and energy. What truly makes our performances unique is our interactive approach. We love involving the audience in our shows, creating a sense of connection and shared experience. We encourage the crowd to sing along, take song requests, and make every performance a memorable and interactive event. What are some of the most requested songs you get at weddings? Do you guys have any favourites to perform? Over the years, we have noticed a few songs that are consistently requested at weddings. Some of the most popular choices for walking down the aisle include "A Thousand Years," the theme song from "Princess Bride," and "Here Comes the Sun." For first dance songs, "Die a Happy Man" and "Brown Eyed Girl" are often at the top of the list.

When it comes to guest requests, we often hear songs by Creedence Clearwater Revival, Crowded House, and INXS. However, there is a running joke in the music world that playing certain songs like "Khe Sanh" or "Horses" will cost extra. To avoid any awkwardness, we tend to steer clear of those songs as we feel its rude to ask for extra, wink wink. You have a few different options when people book you for their wedding, whether you perform as a duo or with a band for example, which is quite unique. What do you offer that you think sets you apart as wedding singers? What sets us apart as wedding singers is the range of options and services we offer to our clients. We understand that every couple has unique preferences and desires for their wedding day, so we provide a variety of packages to cater to their specific needs. Firstly, we offer different performance options, including performing instrumental solo guitar, as a duo or with a full band. This allows us to create the perfect atmosphere and energy based on the couple's preferences and the size of the venue. We take great pride in our ability to learn and perform special moment songs for couples. We understand that these songs hold a significant meaning for the couple and their loved ones, and we want to ensure that their special

moments are accompanied by the perfect music. In addition to live music, we also provide MC and DJ services. Elke takes charge of the event, ensuring that everything runs smoothly and seamlessly. in my early teenage years, and since then, I’ve learned to appreciate how a picture can capture emotions and preserve a moment in time/revisit a memory. So I guess you could say that photography began as a hobby and became an integral part of my identity.

My favourite type of photo is one that captures a specific moment in time. That’s why I came up with the Adventure Session concept. It all starts with a simple question: “Do you want to go on an adventure?” Love is an adventure, and this is a great way to celebrate it.

Ashley Nielsen, the creative force behind Ashley Nielsen Photography, unfolds her passion for capturing love stories, particularly within the enchanting world of weddings. Hi Ashley, how did you discover your passion for photography, and what drew you to capturing weddings? I know it may sound cliché, but my love for photography has been with me for as long as I can remember. I grew up with film cameras and enjoyed the anticipation of waiting for a roll to develop. What are some of your favourite types of shots or moments to capture during a wedding? The Adventure Session - My favourite type of photo is one that captures a specific moment in time. Every wedding is unique. Can you share some memorable moments from weddings you’ve been a part of that stand out in your mind? Weddings are always unique, but a recent one I photographed stood out with its creative guest book concept. The couple sent blank recipe cards along with their save-the-dates and requested guests to return them as RSVP cards. At the reception, the cards were compiled into a personalised recipe book with each guest’s recipe and signature. From grandma Sue’s famous carrot cake recipe to Uncle Bill’s breakfast burger, the book is filled with cherished memories. As a sentimental person, I notice that kind of detail. What are some common requests or trends you’re seeing for wedding photography at the moment? A common presentation of lower back pain we see clinically is pain on one or both sides of the lower back, often extending along the top of the pelvis and into the hip. Activities like rolling over in bed, getting out of bed, transitioning from sitting to standing, prolonged standing, and even simple actions like sneezing can aggravate this type of lower back pain. Causes of Lower Back Pain This specific type of lower back pain is frequently linked to muscle spasms or the development of knots, known as trigger points, in key postural muscles of the lower back. Understanding why this happens involves recognizing underlying muscle compensation patterns that develop between the hips and lower back.

Role of Hip Muscles The crux of the compensation pattern often lies in the muscles of the hips. Tightening of the muscles in the front of the hips, known as hip flexors, can lead to the weakening of their opposing muscles in the back of the hips, known as the glutes. This imbalance can result in the pelvis tilting forward, placing increased tension on the lower back and spine. Due to the weakened glute muscles, the lower back lacks optimal support during activities such as walking, running, and standing. Consequences of Muscle Imbalances Over time, these imbalances in the hip muscles can force the smaller postural muscles of the lower back to compensate for the higher workload. Unfortunately, these muscles are just not designed for that and often go into spasm and, ultimately, trigger lower back pain. Understanding and addressing these muscle

Tahlia unter Tahlia Hunter is on a mission to raise funds and awareness for pelvic pain, something that is actually quite common and yet is often misunderstood and undiagnosed. As someone that personally suffers with endometriosis and also works in the health industry, this cause is close to her heart and she wishes to help others on their own journey as well as creating more understanding within the community as a whole.

i Tahlia. You have launched a fundraiser to raise funds and awareness around pelvic health, can you give us a bit of insight as to why this is a cause that is important to you? I am passionate about pelvic health for a very selfish reason - it has affected me for many years. During 2022 I was diagnosed with endometriosis, 5 years after I initially presented to my primary healthcare provider. This is not to negatively highlight one specific provider, but to demonstrate the lack of understanding we generally have as a healthcare system, in regards to pelvic health. Can you tell us a bit about these health issues and how they might impact those affected?

Pelvic pain is a very broad issue, which can present in many different ways and is often multifaceted. Pelvic pain not only affects the individual whom is suffering, but affects their community as well. In regards to endometriosis specifically, there is an estimated lifetime value burden of $129,993 for one woman with endometriosis. Other areas of life which are impacted include but are not limited to; physical and mental health, intimacy, work/school productivity, relationships and fertility. What are some common misconceptions about these kinds of health issues, and how common are they? Pelvic pain is highly prevalent and affects over 300 million people world-wide, despite the limited discussions surrounding this issue. The most common misconceptions I would like people to know is that for women,

your period should not be regularly painful. Sex should not be painful. Having to take medication frequently to manage your pain is not normal. Pain that stops you from completing your everyday tasks is not normal. If you can, please find a provider that you trust, who will listen to you and take your concerns seriously. Tell us about the fundraiser, what do you have planned? The fundraiser is about more to me than simply raising funds for pelvic health. It’s about raising awareness and starting a much-needed conversation around such an important issue. As a result we’ve taken a multifaceted approach to the fundraiser. To raise money myself and my partner Jak will be running a half marathon in Port Macquarie on the 3rd of March. We also have a number of raffle nights planned in the lead up to the run

and a post run event to be held on the day, so the topic is spoken about more than once.

I hope our community as a whole will have a better understanding of the significant impact pelvic pain can have on the individual and our society. Any funds

that are raised will go straight to The Pelvic Pain Foundation of Australia, a not-for-profit organisation formed to build a healthier and more productive community, by improving the quality of life of people with pelvic pain. This organisation provides a much needed platform for both health professionals and patients, working to improve awareness, resources and services to those with pelvic pain. They also provide funding for much needed research.

It’s February! By now you could be well and truly into your new year’s fitness routine or not? Maybe things are starting to slide? For this Fitness Update I’ve compiled a list of the most frequently asked questions we get asked in the gym when it comes to women’s health and fitness.

Implementing a well-rounded fitness routine that combines cardiovascular exercises, like walking, running, swimming or cycling, with strength training is your best plan. However, it really does depend on your starting point as to what is the best balanced approach for you. Nutrition is also an important factor to consider when the goal is losing fat and building muscle. Advice should be sought from a dietician as to what is best for your personal situation. Will lifting weights bulk me up? The fear of “bulking up” often deters women from lifting weights. However, this concern is absolutely not true! Women possess lower testosterone levels than men, making it challenging (almost impossible) to achieve the same level of muscle hypertrophy (growth). As we age and start to see the natural effects of sarcopenia (gradual and generalised loss of skeletal muscle mass and strength that occurs with ageing), incorporating weights into your exercise regime becomes even more important. from the dumbbells; lifting weights is a key component to strong muscles and bones, boosts metabolism and also helps with balance. Do I need protein powder to lose weight? Protein powder has become synonymous with fitness, but it’s not a mandatory ingredient for weight loss success. While protein is crucial for muscle repair and overall health, it can be obtained through whole foods. Incorporating lean sources such as chicken, fish, beans, and nuts into your diet ensures an ample protein intake without the need for supplements. However, protein powder can be a convenient option for those with busy lifestyles or specific dietary requirements, serving as a supplement rather than a necessity. How many times a week should I be exercising to get results? The frequency of workouts is an important factor in achieving fitness goals, but this question really depends on what your goal is. In general terms, it is good to aim for three to five sessions per week, encompassing a mix of cardio and strength training. Consistency is key; find a schedule that aligns with your lifestyle and allows your body to recover adequately. Tailor your exercise routine to your individual preferences, whether it’s high-intensity interval training, yoga, or a combination of various activities. Listen to your body, prioritise rest

when tired. If you feel good and energised, work harder or add an additional session, if not, add a rest day. Your exercise regime will really be dependent on your goals and starting point. What should I be eating? Nutrition plays a pivotal role in any fitness journey. But what should you eat? Again, the answer depends on your personal situation. Bruce De Graaf Bruce de Graaf is a local man who has rolled up his sleeve to

donate blood and plasma a whopping 650 times now! He insists he isn’t, but we think he’s a total legend! Bruce’s message is simple; it is a small amount of his time to give up each fortnight, and yet it has a huge impact for those in our community whose life depends on blood donations.

i Bruce. Can you share with our readers a bit about how and why you started donating blood regularly?

I would like to point out that I am no one special, certainly no legend. I put my pants on the same as everyone else, one leg at a time....I do not levitate into them, but over a long period of time, I have crossed the threshold of the Lifeblood (aka The Blood Bank) 650 times. It all started when I had turned 18 and my 82 GREATER PORT MACQUARIE focus

mum’s twin sister, Mary Lems, was heading off somewhere and asked if I wanted to come. She explained that she was off to the Blood Donor Mobile unit and said I’d probably be too scared to come and donate blood. Challenging a teenage upstart always gets a result....off we went and donation number 1 was in the bag. She then said that she’d done 40 donations and I’d never catch her. Challenge number 2 was silently accepted and here we are at number 650. We spoke to you a while ago when you had hit a milestone donation, and now

you’re about to hit a whopping 650 donations! That’s quite incredible, have many others been able to match that number? Sadly, I will only be the 29th Australian to hit this milestone. I say sadly, only because the donor numbers remain at 3 percent of the eligible population which doesn’t come anywhere near reflecting the Aussie spirit of giving...maybe they don’t know. Therein lies the quest....to tell them. Why has this cause become so important to you over the years?

I only wanted to catch up and beat Auntie Mary in terms of donation numbers. The older I get the more people I interact with and I have met people who rely on us to keep rolling up our sleeves regularly. I unashamedly labour the point, but only 3 percent of the eligible population donate blood and plasma. If we 3 percenters don’t do this, then who will? It’s no big deal for me but it is a seriously big deal for people who require blood products or have blood disorders that rely on us. Money cannot buy what we give, it has to be donated, and as far as I am concerned all it costs me is a little bit of time which I am more than willing to give to the punters I have met who need what I have.

Michael Klim is an Olympic Gold Medal swimming legend who has a rare blood disorder and requires plasma every 6 weeks or so. Michael is now an Ambassador for Lifeblood. I am so happy that we, as such a relatively small group of donors, can help to keep these guys going.

Can you share some stories of some of the people you have crossed paths with over the years that have inspired you to keep at it?

For those thinking of rolling up their sleeves who haven’t done so before, can you share a bit about what the experience of donating is like?

Firstly, there is a wonderful group of people who are the vampires who extract blood and plasma from me. They are the Lifeblood nurses who are remarkable and highly skilled people who are adequately equipped to give back the sass I give them. I just sit there and do nothing, they do the hard stuff, and I am very grateful that they do.

The process of donating blood is so simple, it really is no big deal. Make an appointment, turn up on the day, do a little online paperwork, get your iron level and blood pressure checked then I sit back and read a book.

I was fortunate to have met a guy named Danny who saw a blood bank pin in my lapel a few years ago. He called me a legend which was just ridiculous. He explained that he required fortnightly blood transfusions and he was so grateful to me and all of the donors. He wrote me a card with 6 words on it which really got to me, the Bastard. What he wrote meant that I could no longer take a break from donating because I knew that Danny was out there somewhere and needed me to keep the supply going.

There are snacks for the donors so that you get a chance to rehydrate, and have a chinwag with others who now form your tribe.

I also met Taylor from North Haven, NSW, who due to a blood disorder requires what she calls “Life Juice” every 5 to 6 weeks. Our plasma keeps Taylor able to be a strong mum to keep up with her 2 year old boy. There is also the very high profile plasma recipient, Michael Klim. I haven’t met him, but I know who he is. He has a special place in my memory when he and his mates won the 4 x 100m relay at the Sydney 2000 Olympics,

What are some of the criteria for becoming a donor? There is an online eligibility questionnaire that people can take to check if they are eligible to donate. It will only take a couple of minutes of your time to complete (go to www.lifeblood. com.au) There had been limitations on people who had been in the UK during the mad cow period, but that has been lifted. Just do it, provided you are healthy and well it only takes a little bit of your time....nothing more. There are a number of different situations that someone might need a blood donation, do you know what some of those might be? Cancer patients undergoing treatment are

heavily dependent upon blood products as are people undergoing organ transplant operations.

Accident victims make up a great number of blood recipients, and of course those poor buggers afflicted with rare blood disorders that need “Life Juice” to keep them strong and to recharge the batteries, albeit temporarily. Plasma is also a critical ingredient in the making of Factor VIII which is used for burns victims. What would you say to anyone thinking of becoming a blood or plasma donor? There is no reason for not becoming a donor. It’ll cost you a bit of time, which I can attest is very well spent. Over 70 percent of the population know someone who has or has had cancer yet still only 3 percent of the population are regular donors. Aussies are well known as being some of the most generous and giving people in a crisis, this has been shown over and over, but in terms of blood supplies, we are in crisis. Our society needs more blood than is donated and with only 3 percent of the eligible population doing the heavy lifting, we are not positioned well. t has been a great start to 2024 with great weather and lots of visitors enjoying the Hastings area and spending money locally. This helps build our area with the money reinvested through wages, etc helping the whole area to grow. I was speaking to a few visitors recently down near Town Green and other areas around town, and they were all saying the same thing to me. That the area is beautiful, the beaches are lovely and there are some great places to visit for adults, kids (and those young at heart). What impressed them the most was how friendly our area was. That people walk down the street and smile at you and say hello. What a great way for our area to be remembered and encourage visitors to come again. Many aren’t aware that at Business Port Macquarie we do so much more than just hold monthly networking events. We have a board of 12 highly motivated local business people who voluntarily give their time and are passionate about improving opportunities for business. Some of the ways we do this is by advocating on behalf of a business when they have an issue or an idea that can assist the area. Our Executive Officer Malcolm Neale and new Executive Assistant Kylie Morris, would love to meet you and hear of any ideas or issues that are affecting business and what you would like us to work on.

Meeting with, and lobbying all levels of government, we can bring to their attention the needs of the business community. Some issues we are working on now have to do with telecommunications in the area and how telcos and government working together can improve this. Another is the issue of the heavy silting of the Hastings River. With the huge build-up of sand, it is getting very difficult for navigation of fishermen, tourism operators and other businesses that rely on the river. This is something that affects us all as a community. We become the conduit between business and government as to how we can work together with all stakeholders to reach a successful outcome for everyone. We also have discussions regarding workforce availability and how we can not only bring workers to fill the gaps to the area, but also what housing opportunities there are for these workers. I have been really impressed and excited recently by some of the great connections that are coming together in the district. There are a variety of network organisations in the area including Hastings Business Women’s Network, Micro Business Forum, Greater Port Macquarie Tourism Association, Wauchope Chamber, Camden Haven Chamber, Regional Development Australia, Business NSW and Business Port Macquarie. Representatives of these groups meet regularly. We discuss the needs of business in the area and how

we can collaborate to make a difference for our Region. A big shout out to Council’s Economic Development section who have also been joining these meetings and listening to our ideas, needs and how they can collaborate and work with us all to bring these ideas to fruition to benefit businesses and locals alike. ow quickly time flies! This January marks the start of my 51st year practising law in Port Macquarie. In 1974 I was the youngest solicitor in town. I believe that I now have the ignominious position of being the oldest! So much has changed in both the legal profession and in Port Macquarie. Vacant lots on Settlement Shores were selling for about $15,000; the independent grocer, John Jones, was Coles’ only competitor; Port Macquarie had a dolphin pool and a drive-in movie theatre. The Family Law Act (1975) did not exist and divorces were conducted in the NSW Supreme Court under the old Matrimonial Causes Act. As a young solicitor, I was sometimes assigned the task of serving the divorce petition on the other party and on one memorable day I was warned to be careful because the person to be served was a notorious local criminal – famous for being convicted of firing a rifle multiple times in Horton Street. As luck would have it, when I knocked on his door, he opened it brandishing a rifle. Fortunately, he seemed very happy to be getting divorced. Today, more than 50% of law graduates are female whereas in the 1960s and 70s, most practitioners were male. Today, even I can get around a keyboard whereas in those days,

Momo and Matt Ryan made the continental move from Hamamatsu, Japan to Port Macquarie just over seven years ago bringing a wealth of experience from different fields across culinary, design and retail worlds to their new coastal home. With a natural curiosity and quiet entrepreneurial flair, they have worked together to craft a special experience at their traditional Japanese eatery ICHI. Along with their three beautiful children they have immersed themselves in our community and linked with key people and projects along their journey.

hat was the appeal of our coastal community and how did you find your place?

Momo: Matt’s parents were living here when we decided to move back, and being close to family was the most important thing, and I’m also a country girl. Matt: I contacted a friend here and told him we were considering moving to Port, but our three kids couldn’t speak much English. He laughed and said his wife studied Japanese and was a teacher at the local public school. We quickly enrolled the kids and moved to Port the day after. We arrived after 13 years in Japan, and the kids have gone from strength to strength ever since. Like most regional towns, sports and activities have played a big part in us settling in. We are eternally grateful to all the people who volunteer their time for the sake of this; they are the true champions. We understand to keep the community spirit of Port, we need to keep working on it, and it should never be taken for granted. Who or what inspired the drive and determination within you to take on this journey as restauranteurs and where did it all begin?

Momo: Essentially, Ichi is inspired by every ‘izakaya’ in Japan. An izakaya is a little local place to eat, drink and meet people, either with friends or by yourself and talking to the owner or serendipitously to a stranger. Izakaya’s are probably the closest thing to bars in Japan, but there’s a big emphasis on eating and drinking over shared plates. Houses in Japan aren’t made for entertaining, so the local izakaya is an essential place for creating community. We love to see customers interact, and locals even have a sense of ‘it’s ours’. Matt: A good friend who is a photographer in Japan said, ‘Always bring back culture’. It took me a while to understand his point, but now I’m always curious about what makes places unique. I knew we had unique knowledge and a strong understanding of what we wanted to do. When we saw the space we knew it had a feeling of a meeting point. Momo, your thoughtful menu design at ICHI honours the fresh, simple and delicious flavours of Japan. You have both worked to create a welcoming authentic space for people to come together over a beautiful meal. What do you hope your guests take away from a night at ICHI? Momo: I want everyone to taste the flavours

We are also fortunate that the Port palette has continued to evolve as more people are travelling to Japan, so they know they’re getting a taste for the real thing. Matt: For me, it’s also about introducing people to saké. For too long, it’s had an undeserved reputation as only lower quality sakè has been available. Educating and offering tastings so more people can appreciate great tasting sakè is exciting. You both have extensive careers in and out of the restaurant world. As creative and business minds do you subscribe to a firm business plan or move more with energy and flow? We have so many backgrounds and skills, maybe too many - we’ve acquired over the years and places we’ve lived, venues we’ve created and worked at, so it’s all about channelling those into the energy of our business. It’s very much a creative process. Technology helps, but our product is still driven by the energy of the environment we create, using what’s around us. How do you envision you would make an impact as a small business in a regional/ coastal community with ICHI? Metaphorically, the intent was to bring another flavour. Like Italian and French provincial towns, we want Port to be known

for its produce and see a shift back to regional food, as it has been for or thousands of years. We are blessed with some of the finest food sources in the country, and then we add flavours and showcase them uniquely. More and more, visitors from the cities are not surprised by the great food or chefs we have in the regions. Big cities are essential places to push creativity and boundaries, but the regions will always hold the authenticity. You have curated a team of highly skilled teams to deliver on the ICHI and Deux Garden mission – how important is this team including chef Junya Matsuo to the success of the business/s? We were so lucky when Junya came on board. His knowledge of fish from his days at Tsukiji Fish Market in Tokyo is rare, and even rarer these days since its closure. Our staff sincerely appreciate Japanese culture and the way, so many of the unspoken traits come naturally and add to the atmosphere. At our new venture Deux, the concept is collaborative, with Momo and Dru creating menus. It also helps to have a strong relationship with the new partners, so Cassegrain Winery remains an integral part of the Mid-North Coast fabric and a place where memories are made.

Matt: My curiosity and love of languages leads me deeper into cultures and cuisine. Having Momo and our friends lead me around Japan helped get me there quicker than most. What has been your greatest challenge and greatest achievement during your time as a business owner? We were sitting there on a Saturday in August 2021 with everything ready to open, and the announcement came from the NSW Premier that the state was going into an indefinite lockdown. So we are grateful for every day we get to open. Our achievements come from the little interactions we see and the special moments our regulars experience. Also, like all our favourite spots, knowing that Ichi contributes to community building. How instrumental have sages and critics been in the evolution of your career/ business? What is the most valuable lesson they taught you? Momo: It’s all about the support I get from my customers, they motivate me.

What has been your most effective tool/s or attribute/s as a business owner that has enabled you to bring ICHI to life and make a difference?

Matt: The previous boss of Meltique, Katsuichi San, was a great leader. He told us before he had to go back to Japan, ’In this region, it’s more important what people think about you than what you do”. That could be a recipe for a shallow existence or a solid community. We are thankful for our ongoing journey in Port Macquarie and have absolutely found the latter to be true.

We had onsite visits at various stages and any other time we wanted to have a look we were welcomed onsite with the supervisor. ow, where did January go? We’ve had a really busy start to the year, which is fantastic! The vibe is very positive. I certainly hope you all managed to get some downtime over the last few weeks and enjoy time with your friends and family in our beautiful part of the world. So, as we settle in for another year, I am pondering what is ahead of us…We prepare to say goodbye to our eldest daughter who heads to Canada this month – she has worked tirelessly to raise the funds to take herself off to see the world – when we will see Anna again is an unknown – sadness for us all but excitement at the same time for the endless opportunities awaiting her. Maggie our middle daughter sits her HSC this year and third daughter Elyse is starting Year 10 – they are all very self-sufficient, independent young ladies – the product of parents who have been in business their whole lives - so we find more and more that we are moving into a new chapter as a family. Similarly, we are hoping to move our business into the next chapter. We are trying out some different ideas in 2024. Firstly, we are incredibly excited to have secured a relationship with local interior designer Julie de Lepervanche.

Being one of the last trades into these apartments always creates a sense of adrenaline – the challenge of meeting the deadlines to have everything installed across all apartments prior to handover is such a big job, and always needs all hands on deck but the sense of achievement at the end is amazing. Having such dedicated and professional installers is the key to achieving these deadlines. Each month I am going to tell you a little about our amazing staff – starting with Sandra who makes our roller blinds and all the awning skins in our factory in Wauchope. Sandra has been making blinds for 7 years and tells us she LOVES her job – which shows in the quality of her work but even more so in the huge smile she shares with us all every day – her bright bubbly personality is an absolute pleasure to work with!
