MORE THAN JUST A SUIT AND TIE When moving home it’s a given that a great sale price is high on the priority list. But at HEM, it goes beyond purely the sold sticker. For us, being good to deal with and making the journey to sold as smooth as possible is just as important. We moved away from the franchise-style, “one size fits all” approach to provide a more personalised service, which listens and adapts to your individual situation. This, combined with great marketing, innovation, service and team work has resulted in 600 plus happy ever mores in just over three years and is why HEM has become one of Port Macquarie’s most recognised and much-loved brands. My approach is pretty simple. I treat people the way I like to be treated myself. So, whilst other agents drop their fees, inflate their valuations and tell you how great they are to “win your business”, I purely focus on you, your situation and providing the honest, accurate advice you need to hear. My role is to take the pressure off the move and whether it involves rolling up my sleeves to help prepare the home for sale or tough negotiation to achieve the highest possible price, my clients know I’m on their side, doing everything possible to get them the best outcome, rather than treating them as just another transaction before moving onto the next dollar sign.

So if it’s more that just another suit and tie salesperson you want when making the most important move you may ever make, contact HEM and find your happy ever more.

e’ve been overwhelmed by the feedback from so many businesses and readers about our return to print and our new format. By and large everyone loves the new size - so thank you! 10,000 copies were eagerly grabbed from our stands around the region this month and hand delivered by our courier Steve to businesses. There is also lots of positive feedback coming in from local businesses about how busy they are, notably with lots of locals really embracing the opportunity to shop local. Over the years there has been many a campaign by local industry and bodies to support the idea of shopping local - so what is it that has finally made people truly embrace this notion? It could be the restrictions on movement, as more people are staying in their home region? It could also be the strong sense of community coming together when they know how tough the end of

What changes did you have to make in your business, and what lasting effect does it have on your customers - positive or negative? We really focused on our farm produce and delivered hampers throughout the Hastings areas. These hampers were packed full of produce from our farm, other local farmers and house baked goods. The lasting effect was an extremely positive outcome, as our customers really appreciated and gained the concept of where food comes from. o far 2020 has been a year we will never forget. If you have to put it into a sentence for a story, what would it say? 2020 has been a year of learning, challenges, emotions and support, creating opportunities, possibilities and positivity in such uncertain times. What changes did you have to make in your business, and what lasting effect does it have on your customers - positive or negative? Initially we closed the shop front and had a delivery only service to protect staff and community members. Our amazing courier, Jo implemented a contactless delivery service during this time. Our online store saw an increase in orders, which has continued to this day. During the peak of COVID, a lot of milestones were not celebrated due to restrictions, so flowers we used as gifts to acknowledge these occasions. A lot of customers were first time flower orderers and we have now found that sending flowers has increased in popularity and we have gained so many new customers. How did you manage the mental load, and what kept you sane throughout the 11 weeks?

Our motto over the last few months has been "SEND FLOWERS ... NOT HUGS!" You can make use of our convenient online store and have flowers delivered to your door.

For us, we have been busier than ever before. It has been physically and emotionally exhausting - and there is no sign of slowing down any time soon. Rather than feeling stress of having to put off staff and keep my business alive - I have mentally struggled with guilt that we are so extremely busy when fellow business friends are struggling to keep their doors open. I have an amazing team here at Touchwood and supportive family and friends who keep me grounded and focused ... plus snacks ... lots of snacks! The journey through this for your business has been a rollercoaster, but what about your personal life? Are there any changes you'll be sticking to over the rest of the year? Life has been hectic, to say the least. Between a busy work life for both me and my husband, teaching Physical Culture online and having two children, life has been full on. We have been using our weekends to go on adventures, all close to home, which has been

really nice - we hope to continue this. Where to next for your business? We have recently welcomed Sarah to the Touchwood Team. Alongside Kayla, Joan and I, we are working together to fill the high demand for flowers, with care, quality and passion. Our team will continue to provide beautiful fresh flowers to our wonderful customers and support our community in any way possible. This year I celebrate 15 years as owner of Touchwood Flowers. I look forward to having a celebratory drink once this is all over. How can locals support you and your business? Our motto over the last few months has been "SEND FLOWERS ... NOT HUGS!" You can make use of our convenient online store and have flowers delivered to your door. Flowers are the perfect gift to brighten someone's day, celebrate a special occasion, say I love you, or even just because. Support small business and support a dream. Thanks Ashley. o far 2020 has been a year we will never forget. If you have to put it into a sentence for a story, what would it say? “You truly do not know what you do not know; who saw this coming? What changes did you have to make in your business, and what lasting effect does it have on your customers - positive or negative? The changes we have now have become the norm - all the cleaning, temperature checks and just overall care for each other, without hugs! There were different reactions from everyone, including fear, but reminders of the fact that we all have to work together made a huge difference. Customer reliance and confidence is 100%, and I have felt this very strongly. Positive for sure. The trust in each other as a client, coworker and apprentice definitely showed its strength. The wonderful people I work with ... the team we are is fantastic - honest to the core and strong. We have faced this monster together and are still going strong.

The wonderful people I work with ... the team we are is fantastic - honest to the core and strong. We have faced this monster together and are still going strong.

For negatives, I would mention the fear of the unknown; are we safe? Your business, your life's work, your security and your pride - will they fail? Some high risk clients have kept their distance and appointments further in time, but I do think this will change back to the regular timing as this passes. How did you manage the mental load, and what kept you sane throughout the 11 weeks? Day by day, with the help of clients, my beautiful girls and colleagues, sticking together and talking honestly about how we feel. Eckhart Tolle ... lots of self-help through meditation and self-care in other ways. I truly hope that after this there is nothing bigger to conquer. The journey through this for your business has been a rollercoaster, but what about your personal life? Are there any changes you'll be sticking to over the rest of the year?

Self reflection is a big one. Be proud of your accomplishments and strength in holding up, for sure. Stronger relationships have been born through the trials of COVID. These are here to stay. It has also shown that family is more important than ever. Where to next for your business? We keep going! As long as we do our absolute best - that is all we can do. Lots of training at the end of this year, with fantastic new products and skills! Yet again, a new team to get familiar with, but how cosy has it been! We are allowed to be together, and this team is so skilled and most of all, totally honest and close at heart. How can locals support you and your business? We have had overwhelming support already through these weeks, with generosity beyond words - but be patient. We love you! Our team wants to serve you the best we can, but we also have to have all of our safety in mind. Thanks Evelina.

SKYE P ETH O ARTHOUSE INDUSTRIES

A monthly earring subscription business has kept Skye Petho busy during 2020. Each month, a handmade, beautifully packaged gift is delivered direct to your home - sparking joy and excitement for customers to see what is inside. Skye tells us more about this creative project and the next big move for her business.

H

i Skye. 2020 has turned out to be a pretty hectic year for retailers and small businesses; how are you going now things seem to be back to, dare

we say, "normal"? Yes, what a hectic year! It sure has pushed us as a small business, with plenty of highs and lows. Things are starting to feel a bit more normal here in Port Macquarie and Arthouse seems to be back on track but with some changes, to ensure we are keeping ourselves and the community safe. One of these changes have been reduced opening hours in the shop, giving me more time to create the cool things you buy from us. I’m loving the extra time creating and finding this has helped my overall mental health during the last few challenging months.

Another has been reduced class numbers in our creative classes, to ensure we are allowing 4 square metres per person, so we are COVID safe. It’s really important that we are doing our part to help stop the spread of COVID, so we are doing our best to ensure the safety of everyone who interacts with our business. We have re-opened our AirBnbs for visitors to the area and they are back to normal occupancy, with lots of people wanting to experience our gorgeous region. Our community and businesses are very resilient, and we are seeing fantastic support for all areas of Arthouse Industries. During the business restrictions of early 2020, you kept yourself busy creating and launching your "Earring Subscription" business. Tell us what is involved and how it works? Yes, it is the coolest thing I have done in a while and brings me so much joy!

Every month I create a new pair of handmade earrings for the subscription, and our subscribers are sent an awesome little package of sunshine and happiness for just $25 a month. Subscribing is easy and can be done via the website: www.arthouseindustries.com.au and they are fantastic for a little dose of monthly joy, or keep them for gifts. Every month's earrings are different, and I try to use lots of techniques, materials and local suppliers for all my printing and materials. I am so grateful to Snap Printing and Port Badges and Trophies for helping me make all my crazy ideas come to life each month. EMERGE LIKE A BUTTERFLY FROM A LONG, DARK, ISOLATED WINTER ... and come and experience an event like no other!

T

imes may be tough, but ArtWalk is Port Macquarie’s favourite event, and it will be going ahead (albeit in a different, more socially-distanced format). We need art and creativity in our lives now more than ever! It will still be edgy, delightful and surprising but instead of a one-night festival, you are invited to explore multiple locations across the Port MacquarieHastings region, over an entire week. We may not be able to meet in large gatherings or encourage getting up and close and personal, but that’s not going to stop ArtWalk from offering the perfect platform for celebrating the creativity that resides in this perfect piece of paradise. So, what will ArtWalk 2020 look like? ArtWalk is heading to the streets and into local businesses by encouraging artists to use shop front windows as their very own gallery for a week. Day or night, you will be able to

wander and enjoy all this region’s creatives have to offer. Event elements include: • Longest Footpath Art Gallery - artists located in businesses within the CBDs • Artist markets located within the CBDs • Public art installations in locations around the region • Glasshouse Window Banner Gallery • Satellite events, including exhibitions and workshops • The event program will be available online at www.artwalkpmq.com.au from midSeptember to help you plan. Plus, Port Macquarie in spring is a glorious thing (wonderful weather, whale-watching, walks and swims, hinterland delights, nature in full bloom, food and wine aplenty), and ArtWalk is perfectly timed for the October school holidays. We can’t think of a better way to spend our days than wandering around this beautiful region, getting creatively inspired,

sightseeing, eating and drinking … bliss! Visit www.portmacquarieinfo.com.au for places to stay, trip ideas, itineraries, places to eat and drink, galleries and museums to visit, and events to experience. And please … be COVIDsafe. If you’re feeling unwell, or you reside in (or have recently visited) a COVID hot spot, please stay home. When you attend ArtWalk, please abide by COVIDsafe health guidelines. Let’s keep the Mid North Coast healthy and happy! #supportlocalpmh

With a corporate career background, a lifetime of adventure memories and a zest for life, Port Macquarie local Sam Dalton is now focused on his most important role yet - father. Quality time at home with his family and friends now takes precedence, but the adventures won't stop for the Daltons.

have been up to. Hey Claire; we like being busy. We love spending time together outdoors, and fortunately our kids have inherited a passion for a number of adventure sports. I guess you could say we literally drove, hiked, kayaked, canoed, surfed, flew, skated and mountain-bike our way up to the Great Barrier Reef and back down again, where we settled for a period in the Snowy Mountains. I was lucky enough to be offered a project manager role on a rope access job for critical infrastructure works on the Snowy Hydro Scheme. The work was uniquely challenging, but was a great location to pursue my love of whitewater paddling and paragliding (when I wasn't at work). Early in the piece we discovered Mount Beauty in the Victorian Alps; it was an alpine village and really did feel like

You've just announced the new STOKE Adventure + Film Festival for late 2021 - what's it all about? I’ve been thinking about STOKE for a number of years. The STOKE concept has evolved from a small amateur film screening to a full-blown two day festival event. I wanted to provide amateur and professional film producers a conduit to amateur and professional adventurers, so they could produce quality amateur films together and provide them a platform to showcase their films on a big screen to friends and family. From there it has evolved to four submission categories opening this month for International, Domestic, Mid North Coast and JProd (Junior Producer) for budding film prodigies 16 years and younger. The festival side of it has now grown considerably with a number of demo events and unsanctioned competitions, from artificial and natural rock wall bouldering, slacklining, highlining, mountain bike trials, skateboarding, BMX comps and a number of water-based sports, plus adventure outfitter exhibitors to be activated in and around Port Macquarie. It’s about reconnecting with the outdoors through adventure sports and promoting the Mid North Coast for the premier adventure sports destination that it actually is. 26 GREATER PORT MACQUARIE

It’s about reconnecting with the outdoors through adventure sports and promoting the Mid North Coast for the premier adventure sports destination that it actually is.

How can people locally get involved? Mid next year we’ll be putting out a call to action for volunteers who would like to assist in running the festival. If you’re a budding film producer, submissions are open from now through to September next year so please go to stokefilm. com.au and throw your hat in the ring - this is an amateur film festival and all submissions will be considered; there are some great prizes up for grabs. If you’re an athlete or competitor and keen to get involved, you can also keep an eye on our social media for event details. You spent a lot of time working away

from home, but have put down the tools in favour of working on being a stay at home dad. What are you loving most about being closer to home now? I guess having worked a busy corporate life for so long I’ve come to reevaluate my lifestyle and personal ambitions. My dad once told me that true wealth is quality time with your family, and Melinda has always said the best super you can have is good health. The quality time I am now able to spend with my kids, family and friends outdoors is what I love most about being home and will always be my greatest achievement, though I’m especially grateful Melinda and I have created a lifestyle that ensures I’ll personally never ever have to grow up! HELLO

KOALAS FESTIVAL Say "Hi" to four new Hello Koalas sculptures - Frankie Firefighter, Asha The Tree of Life, Koalasaurus - MAX and Chief, the Westpac Rescue Helicopter pilot, soon to be unveiled!

H

i Margret. For those who know you, it's a never-ending koala adventure! Tell us what's happening with this year's Hello Koalas Festival. Our Hello Koalas definitely have a life of their own. It’s an energy that’s hard to resist, fuelled by the love and engagement that so many people - locals and visitors - feel for our Hello Koalas sculptures and for koalas generally. In what seems like the blink of an eye, we now have 77 Hello Koalas sculptures on the Hello Koalas Sculpture Trail, and we have developed a touring arm as well. Last year we visited the Australian National Botanic Gardens in Canberra and the Royal Botanic Garden Sydney, where we were able to refine a new concept which we call the Hello Koalas Treasure Hunt. The idea came about because many people following the trail have referred to the experience as a “unique treasure hunt”, “great fun” and “an adventure”. We decided to centre our annual Hello Koalas Festival around that activity in 2020. Little did we expect to also create an event which would be suitable for the stringent guidelines of COVID-safe behaviour. At our recent launch of Frankie Firefighter by the NSW Tourism Minister Stuart Ayres with Leslie Williams at Roto House, we used the Hello Koalas sculptures to enable social distancing for group photos with the 20 people gathered for the occasion. It worked a treat, with each of the 10 Hello Koalas sculptures placed to allow lots

of space between people attending the launch. The festival is now in its fourth consecutive year. How has it grown over the years, and will this one differ from what we've seen previously? A festival is an event which should always seek to evolve, in its programming and target audiences. We established the festival as the world’s first celebration of our iconic koala, and the event fits neatly into our expanding Hello Koalas brand. In addition to our touring exhibitions, we are developing a growing range of Hello Koalas memorabilia, and this summer we are introducing T-shirts and framed prints to our popular range of tea towels, magnets, badges, tote bags and postcards. Plus, we are opening our Hello Koalas shop in mid-September. The festival this year is one of a kind, following off the back of two significant events - the bushfires and the pandemic It's just the type of fun morale-booster the community needs. Life has a way of pulling us up short at times and then propelling us forward on new and intriguing paths, often with positive outcomes. When we started to plan our 2020 festival, our Hello Koalas sculptures were in storage after our bushfire evacuation and now they will be on display for all the world to see and interact with - albeit safely. No kissing allowed this year! How can we get involved? It's free to participate in the Treasure Hunt but it’s important for people to register their names,

plus ages of any children and contact details (address, phone, email). Families can register on the one form if they share an address. We encourage people to register online by logging on to www.hellokoalas.com/festival soon, as numbers are strictly limited. We will keep participants abreast of COVID-19 safety guidelines from NSW Health by text or email up to the days of the festival Saturday 26 and Sunday 27th September, the first weekend of the school holidays. We will also publicise other festival events presented by our Hello Koalas Sculpture Trail sponsors on our website and via Facebook, Instagram and Twitter. What are you most looking forward to, and are there any surprises we can look out for? The big surprise for the festival is the arrival of our very latest sculpture, Chief, the Westpac Rescue Helicopter pilot on the Hello Koalas Sculpture Trail. We have been keeping this new sculpture out of the limelight until the festival. Chief will be travelling around during our two-day Hello Koalas Festival and “Search and Rescue” Treasure Hunt and will then take up a special location for ArtWalk (1st - 8th October). Stay tuned! WADDELL C U E

D E L I

After fifty years in the meat industry, Garry Waddell still loves delivering the goods to his customers on a daily basis. The phrase "you can't teach an old dog new tricks" was proven inaccurate, after learning a trick or two about BBQing from the pitmaster himself at Cue Deli.

H

i Garry. You’ve been very busy lately in the shop now that it is a full service butchery. Give us an overview of the scope of meat products on offer. Yes, we have been very busy! Although we are a fully licensed registered meat retailer, we try to concentrate on low and slow BBQ cuts, i.e. best quality briskets, beef short ribs, pork shoulder, pork ribs and pork belly - all great cuts for the low and slow BBQ. We do have and are able to supply top quality steaks for reverse searing, grilling or hanging in the BBQ, scotch fillets being the most popular, with the beef tomahawks being up there as well! We also have our tri-tip steaks and rump caps, which are all great cuts for the BBQ. Lamb and pork shoulders are also very popular. We also make a range of sausages, using the trim from our briskets to make fresh beef sausage, jalapeño and cheese sausage, and then we use our fresh pork and make our own kranskys, chorizo and cabanas. Sometimes we change it up with a fresh chilli beef sausage. You have long been famed for your quality meats - where do you source most of the product from? Good quality meat is not hard to come by when you have great suppliers like Breakout River Meats for lamb, pork and beef. We also have a great relationship with Wingham Beef Exports. They supply us with some of the best briskets and beef short ribs. 36 GREATER PORT MACQUARIE

focus

Just recently we have a new contact who has been able to source for us a great supply of top quality beef and pork cuts that really suit our BBQ style of butchery. We have tri-tip steaks, beef cheeks, pork cheeks, rump caps and wagyu briskets. The Boss Man, Adam Roberts has you working on some new creations - what is new that we can get excited about? The Boss Man and I spend quite a bit of time trying and testing new products to suit the Cue Deli. The Pit Master and The Butcher? We have just started our new range of cabanossi. All cooked and smoked on the Big Girl, “Miss Piggy”; she has been working overtime lately, trying to keep up the supply. They have been so popular, they are being sold straight off the smoker. We have one made with local honey, another with fresh jalapeños (mild) and our fresh chilly cabanossi, not for the faint-hearted! (hot). They are already to eat plain or take home for that great cheese platter. If you have not tried our beef burgers or our soft taco packs, smoked scotch fillet or smoked chicken breast, you are missing something special. Over the last few weeks, the Boss Man has been hanging tri-tip steaks and scotch fillets in the Pit Barrel, with great success. The flavour and tenderness has been amazing. We have also been trying a cut we call a lamb tomahawk. If you love your lamb, you will love these. In his spare time, the Boss Man has also been making a variety of beef jerky - another product that just seems to fly out the door.

With all that has been happening around with the COVID-19 restrictions, we have had to totally adapt and change at Cue Deli to continue trading, and so far we are rolling along quite well - thanks to the great support from our growing customer base and quality suppliers. After decades in the trade, what is it you still love about butchery? After fifty years in the meat retail industry (35 of those being self-employed in retail butcher shops) it is still all about learning new things, meeting new people and trying to create new and different products. Cue Deli has been a great learning curve for me; I have always loved BBQ and cooking with fire - the more open the fire, the better. I have learnt a lot while working at Cue Deli about cooking over fire and with all sorts of BBQs. We cook on Miss Piggy (The Big Girl!) - a large off-set smoker we use for our bulk BBQ cooking; the Pit Barrel for hanging beef ribs, pork ribs, pork belly and steaks, and now our lamb and beef tomahawks; the large Pro Q Cabinet for cooking our bacon, hams, briskets and ribs; and the Pro Q Bullet for smaller cooks, single items and sometimes lunch! Where can we find Cue Deli? Cue Deli can be found at 18 Acacia Avenue, Port Macquarie. Just keep an eye out for the smoke and if you don’t see the smoke, the aroma will definitely guide you to our door. Big shout out to all of our customers, old and new for your great support! Thanks Garry.

Hastings HAMPERS Our region has some of the best produce found on the East Coast of NSW. After a sea change to Port Macquarie, Prue Bowman was so amazed by what was on offer, she started her business, Hastings Hampers, offering clients an easy way to get their hands on all of Port's goodies.

H

i Prue. You now call Port Macquarie home after a sea change a few years ago. Introduce yourself and share what it was that brought you to our community. I’m Prue, and I relocated from Sydney to Port Macquarie with my family in 2017. We chose Port Macquarie for its lifestyle, beaches, sense of community and its schools. Port Macquarie was the breath of fresh air that we had been looking for. With an avid interest in artisan foods and a dream to run your own business, you’ve married these two together and started Hastings Hampers. Give us a run down on your new venture. As an avid online shopper, I have always had a dream of starting my own online business in the hamper industry. People are so busy these days, and online shopping needs to meet the customers' expectations in a simple no fuss manner, while exceeding their expectations in value for money. We were overwhelmed by the amount of gorgeous products available in the area, and we saw an opportunity to bring it all together in a hamper business. I started Hastings Hampers in October 2019 after extensively exploring the area and its artisan food and wine producers. We trawled the markets, spoke to businesses, and we put together some initial hampers to launch on our website, HastingsHampers.com

40 GREATER PORT MACQUARIE

I worked closely with suppliers to tailor our selections to cater for a range of customers, occasions and tastes. Mother’s Day really cemented our presence in the community, with the impact of COVID-19 and our older community being isolated from loved ones. We received orders from all over Australia and New Zealand. Relaying the messages of love and support and being able to hand deliver the gifts on Mother’s Day was a truly humbling experience. We are currently taking orders for Father’s Day, and the messages are much the same. Who do Hastings Hampers cater for, and what special orders are on offer? Our hampers cater for almost everyone. We can deliver a birthday gift from family, or represent a corporate customer by providing a gift box to their client. Our Classic Hamper is a popular gift from home building companies and real estates, as it is the perfect gift to welcome people to our area or their new home. This week I have the pleasure of delivering Wellness Hampers. We are flexible in our product offering and are often led by customer needs. We hand deliver to Port Macquarie addresses and can even include a bouquet of local flowers from Boujay Bouquets. Support local is your motto, and all of your goodies come from our region's amazing local businesses. Who's jumped on board?

Our current suppliers include Cassegrain Wines, Bago Winery, and Baba Lila Chocolates for the most amazing handmade truffles. Monica from The Other Chef has been a huge support in supplying delicious pickles, chutneys and sauces, Black Market Bagels add a wow factor with their true New York style bagels, and Ricardoes jams are a huge hit. We use the Sugar Sisters for their handmade cookies, stamped for any occasion. Valla Macadamias have delicious sweet and savoury nuts, and Smelly Scent Soy Candles and The Hollow Store teas and bath salts are just good for the soul. We also use Willow House Handmade for our new baby hampers. They are amazing at what they each achieve, and feedback from my customers has been 100% positive. What makes you unique? Hastings Hampers is unique in that we offer nothing but 100% local products. Our hampers are packaged in 100% recycled packaging and can be shipped Australia wide. We are a family business with a focus on customer satisfaction. How do people get in touch for orders? Our hampers are all available to purchase online at www.hastingshampers.com. au or just give us a call to discuss your requirements: 0433 755 898. MUM’S LASAGNE

ave you noticed any new phenomena whilst scrolling through your news feed in the midst of this global pandemic? Apart from the almost complete absence of pretty much any other topic of "news" than our most uninvited guest COVID-19 (cue yawn factor and then some, but somehow you can’t stop yourself from monitoring it compulsively regardless), there has been a veritable explosion of cooking videos out there. And not just old faithfuls like our friend Jamie Oliver, but every chef of any notoriety whatsoever is jumping on the bandwagon and filming themselves pottering around their home kitchens and demonstrating no, not signature dishes off their restaurant menus, but indeed comfort classics like their mum’s lasagne, like their nanna’s chicken soup, roast chicken, tacos or garlic bread. You name it, each and every item of comfort food you could ever think of has been given a onceover in a chef’s iso kitchen of late. It isn’t at all surprising, given that we are in need of lots of extra comfort ourselves in the midst of these strange and unprecedented times. But it also goes to show you the power of such "old faithfuls", that are part of absolutely everyone’s culinary repertoire, be it whether they happen to be a hatted or Michelin starred chef or not. That they are referred to as "classics" is

nternational Ironman MC, local educator, and extraordinary community leader ... Commentating over 240 events worldwide, Pete reveals his passion for educating kids, his love of Port Macquarie and what motivates him to be such an integral part of our local community. Pete, these last few months haven’t gone exactly as planned, with Ironman events cancelled and international travel halted. You’ve spent more time at home; what are some of things you have been doing? COVID has certainly put a spanner in my 2020 plans! I’ve missed just over 100 flights and obviously a lot of work, but to be honest, there have been some benefits. I’m usually away up to 26 weekends a year; I haven’t left Port Macquarie since March. I’m spending a lot more time with my family, my young kids and my partner, the boys at the Fernhill Tavern on a Friday night and of course, in our beautiful hometown - all happy times. To keep connected to my Ironman mates afar, I do a regular Facebook live - “Tri Buzz with Muzz”, where I chat to guests via Zoom and check in on people and friends from around the world, including world class triathlon and Ironman competitors. I really enjoy it, and we seem to have more people tuning in week to week. Along with being the MC for Ironman, I personally know you from your constant community work. What drives you to do this? One thing I love about Port Macquarie is the community spirit; it drives me to do my part. Whenever anyone is down or a family is

going through a hard time, people are there ha. I really love teaching; I think that’s actually to lift them up. That little bit we do can be a what I was put on this Earth to do. Grassroots farming, connecting to earth and eating seasonally are all things that AJ and her family have been immersing themselves in since taking on the property. Now the Davis farm is open to the public for visits, with dreams to expand the business as they go.

H

i AJ. You're a long time local of the area and dreamed about living on a property some day. Now here you are, living out that dream. Please share a little bit about yourself. Hi, I’m AJ. I have lived here in Sancrox almost my entire life, except for a few years after school that I moved away. I met my husband in Port Macquarie just over 13 years ago. We both knew one day we wanted to own property and have a farm for our family to grow up on. You purchased the property eight years ago and had big dreams. What were they, and how have they evolved over time? We got so lucky to find this property. It was our first home, and it was exactly what we were looking for - a blank canvas. It didn’t take long for us to fill it with animals and create a small veggie plot for us to

e offer fresh veggie and herb boxes and the experience of walking around as we pick the produce fresh for your box.

What's on offer at the farm, and what's the reception been like from those who make their way over for a visit? We love sharing our farm and seeing the enjoyment people get out of visiting. We allow people to wander through our garden and see how everything grows, and the kids love feeding all the animals. We have sheep, pigs, goats, geese, ducks, chickens, turkeys, quails, Guinea fowl and rabbits. We offer fresh veggie and herb boxes and the experience of walking around as we pick the produce fresh for your box. We make natural handmade soaps using as many ingredients from the farm as possible, and condiments from the fresh produce, including jams, pickles and pesto. What principles have you based your farm on, and how have you made this work for you? We base a lot of what we do on permaculture. Although we like our farm to be more structured than true permaculturists,

we use the bits that apply and work for us, like making sure everything has at least two uses. For example, our pigs are in a rotating pen, so they can till and fertilise the plot before we move them on, and then plant vegetables in the ground after them. And, having no waste; almost everything we have built on our farm is from recycled material. My favourite find was an old picket fence a lady wanted removed, and it turned out to be the old Oxley Oval cricket fence that was removed in the '50s! I love so much that we have a piece of Port Macquarie history now surrounding our own little cricket pitch. What has been the biggest learning curve for you all? I would have to say learning to eat what we had available. I had always been a meal plan kinda mum and would have my weekly meals and shopping done at the beginning of the week, so I had everything I needed. Now I see what is ready to pick from the garden

and then plan around that. It’s been tougher than I thought and took some creativity and lots of Googling and visiting my grandmother to learn some old recipes and ideas. Where to next for The Davis Farm? Oh man, so many ideas! More programs and tours. We are passionate about teaching kids and adults about healthy lifestyle. From reconnecting with where our food comes from, to mental health and how important it can be to slow down and find what makes you happy. We are putting in leasing plots for people who don’t have space to grow their own food, and a bush tucker area that we are collaborating with our local Indigenous community to build and create more opportunities to connect our community with local culture. We want to extend our roadside stall to offer more local produce. And these are just scratching the surface of all the ideas we want to create at our farm. Thanks AJ. GREATER PORT MACQUARIE

hat is performance coaching? Performance coaching is about people reaching their potential in any area of their lives. Athletes have been using performance coaching for years; the business sector has now jumped on board, using performance coaching to deliver a competitive edge to their work and businesses. Recently, people are just starting to discover how this can transpire into their everyday lives, creating freedom, balance and direction of their choosing. It’s even made it into pop culture, showing up in the series Billion, with the character Wendy Rhodes ! When is the women's leadership program commencing, and what does it entail? September brings spring, new growth and the launch of our new women's leadership programs, “Launching and “Relaunch on 8th September. Now more than ever, it's important that there is an affordable and accessible resource for women of all ages and areas to be able to learn, nurture, develop and empower themselves to live and become the best version of

themselves. As well as a coach, I am also an NLP Practitioner. This combination allows the content to dive deep into our subconscious and remove old scripts, programming, habits or limiting beliefs that no longer serve, creating fertile ground for new and prosperous mindsets and lifestyles to flourish. Who are the programs aimed at? As we grow we move through different stages; with this in mind, we created four different leadership groups to support women in these stages with content that is relevant to them. M I C H A E L C R O S S L A N D Michael Crossland's motivational speaking had taken off over the past few years. Unfortunately, with a blink of an eye, that all changed. The recent lockdown gave Michael the opportunity to spend quality time at home focusing on the things that matter most, even finding time to write his second book, "Everything will be OK".

H

ey Michael. We last caught up over three years ago. What have you been up to since? How time flies and how the landscape around the world has changed. Three years ago we announced that we were having a baby in February 2018, but as you all know, life doesn’t always go according to plan. Our little baby boy arrived on the 12th December, nine weeks early, very unwell. After four weeks in ICU at The Royal Hospital in Randwick, we were told by the doctor that they believed he had contracted a horrible illness called sepsis, a blood disease which could possibly kill him. I remember praying out loud, saying, "Take my house, take my car, take everything I’ve ever worked for, but please don’t take my little boy". After two months of fighting, we were finally allowed to head home. It was the first time in my life I had walked a day in my mum's shoes. He is now a healthy, beautiful little boy, and we are so grateful for what he has already taught us in such a short period of time and for the joy he’s brought into our lives. My speaking world has gone crazy. Last year I was on 180 flights, speaking across 22 countries, getting a chance to share the stage with the likes of the Dalai Lama and Sir Richard Branson. Standing on stage at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas in front of a sold out arena is something I will never forget, and featuring on many different TV shows, including Ridiculousness on MTV in the USA, Ifish on Channel Ten, broadcasting on Fox Sports and many other programs, getting an opportunity to share some

Understanding my 'why' has been a key component in being able to keep getting back up time and time again, when the voices in my head tell me to just stay down.

And this book was all put together during lockdown! How did the restrictions, not only nationally but internationally, impact you? My entire year has been cancelled. Receiving a call in March by my agent, telling me that my calendar for the year had been completely emptied was a very tough phone call to receive. Also, hearing that my tour as the closing speaker for Tony Robbins was cancelled was very disappointing. With a very weak immune system, I do not have the freedom that so many take for granted. There are no trips to the shopping mall or hanging out with groups of friends, as the risk is just far too great. But for me, it was a really incredible moment in my life to be able to stop, prioritise what was truly important and spend some quality time with my beautiful wife and gorgeous son. I also had a chance to really 52 GREATER PORT MACQUARIE

invest in my mental state of mind, filling it with the knowledge that was going to empower me to stay optimistic and resilient through these turbulent times - and for that, I’m extremely grateful. I have begun to realise that we learn in the light what we so desperately need in the dark. To be able to recall those lessons now when my mind starts to dip and I walk in the victim path, I feel as though I am equipped with the tools I need to get back on my feet. Understanding my "why" has been a key component in being able to keep getting back up time and time again, when the voices in my head tell me to just stay down. I know that everyone reading this, everyone on this planet, we all have a story, we all have pain and suffering -but it is not our pain and suffering that is so different; it is our solutions. I was taught as a very young little boy that it is not our adversities that define us; it is how

we deal with them. When we begin to master our mindset, I think that’s when we begin to master life itself. Another congratulations! You've also just announced that baby number two is on its way! It has been a rough road to be blessed with baby number one, but now to be pregnant with baby number two, we cannot begin to tell you how excited we are. To know that our little boy is going to have a brother or sister early next year brings so much joy and happiness to our lives ... Not so much joy and happiness for our son, Lachy, as we constantly try to get him to kiss Mummy’s tummy, where the new baby is, and his response is always,“No way!" I know having one little boy who is full of energy is a handful and adding to it with a new addition will be crazy, but I think with patience, persistence and perspective we will be able to show our kids they are loved. What legacy do you hope to leave

I want to know that because of the way I lived my life, people continued to push through the coolness of their shadows, so they could have the opportunity to enjoy the warmth of the sunshine!

behind? I feel right now that it’s really important for me to not only leave a legacy, but also to live into my legacy. I want my kids to know that I may not be around for the rest of their lives, but I will certainly love them for the rest of mine. I want to be that kind, compassionate and caring husband that my amazing wife truly deserves. I want to be a person who inspires people to never give up, regardless of what challenges they get thrown - to be the hope for those who are hopeless and to give strength to those who are weak. I want to know that because of the way I lived my life, people continued to push through the coolness of their shadows, so they could have the opportunity to enjoy the warmth of the sunshine! This year has given us all many ups and downs, to say the least. If you could give a few words of hope and optimism to

our readers, what would they be? I think right now it is critical that we as human beings see that this is an opportunity for humanity to reset and begin to prioritise what is truly important in life. We must get out of bed each day and challenge ourselves to do something that our future self will be proud of. We need to remember that through great darkness, these are our discovery moments. We do not discover how unfair our life is, but rather we discover how powerful we have been created. Whether you have been dealt crappy cards or not, whilst you are being dealt cards that means you are still in the game, and when you are still in the game, it’s about how you choose to play those cards. They will ultimately determine the quality of your life. Thanks Michael. GREATER PORT MACQUARIE

As a naturopath I’d often send people to gather their own ingredients for teas, but eventually I began crafting blends to use in my clinic. My experience as a herbalist allowed me to curate teas with a specific medicinal purpose to benefit my patients. When we opened The Hollow Store, I knew it was right to bring these blends and my experience with me. SHOULD WE WEAR MASKS to prevent COVID-19?

I

’ve written about this before; however, as we know, the situation with COVID is ever changing - and so are the recommendations and requirements. Currently it is mandatory for every Victorian to wear a mask when they leave home.

Every day I see lots of people wearing masks, and most are not using their masks correctly. Consequently, they are putting themselves and others at risk.

Handwashing and keeping 1.5 metres apart are still the best ways to prevent COVID spread; however, it is also recommended for those not in Victoria to wear a mask if you are going to be in a situation where you can not physically distance. The wearing of masks contains droplets produced when someone sneezes, coughs or even speaks. Therefor,e the inside of masks potentially contain many germs and should not be touched!

• Masks should cover the mouth and nose and fit snugly to the skin

MASK WEARING DOS • Wash or sanitise your hands before and after putting on and taking off a mask

• If wearing a surgical mask with a nose strip, fit this snugly to your nose when you first put the mask on • Do not touch your mask or face when you

are wearing a mask and even when you’re not • Cloth masks should have three layers to be effective and can be reused after washing • Surgical masks are designed for single use and must be disposed of after wearing for several hours, or if they become damp or develop a hole or tear

EVERY DAY I SEE LOTS OF PEOPLE WEARING MASKS, AND MOST ARE NOT USING THEIR MASKS CORRECTLY. Consequently, they are putting themselves and others at risk.

• When removing your mask, only touch the ear loops or tie string • Put surgical masks straight into the bin and cloth masks into a sealed bag or the wash MASK WEARING DON’TS • You should not touch the outside or inside of your mask

• Your mask should not be pulled down to your chin to eat or talk. This is because the chin area that is exposed could have virus particles on it, so pulling your mask down can transfer these particles to the inside of your mask, which could then allow particles into your mouth and nose. Your mask should not be left hanging from your ear, arm, or anywhere else for the same reason.

I have loved every day of the last 30 years in this industry, ever since starting at 16 I have been driven to create a business that's unique, meaningful, and always puts the client first. I had the opportunity to start my own business at 18 in Finland , and built my skill-set through my involvement in many shows with companies such as Sebastian International, Goldwell, and styling Miss Scandinavia! I loved my work and thrived in learning new skills by travelling the world and meeting all kinds of new people from all walks of life. Armed with my enthusiasm for the future and for continuing improvement, I came to this beautiful country - Australia! Though the people, language and trends were very different to what I was used to in Europe, I have always been willing to work hard and I soon found my feet - business life is tough, but rewarding. In order to ensure the long-term success of my business, I had to assemble the right talent to build my dream team, as they are my company's backbone, and ultimately my second family. My enthusiasm for people and their ways ignited my interest in Welfare and Psychology, which I studied while running my first salon in Port Macquarie - Nefertiti, formerly owned by the legendary Dennis Williams. The support of this community has been fantastic. I have tried to give back by giving free haircuts to those in need at the soup kitchen, as well as my involvement in fundraising events including Ladies in Red, The Masquerade Ball, Shave for a Cure - even Dancing With The Stars!

Leading a high-performance team is challenging and rewarding. The best leaders strive for trust and loyalty and create an environment in which everyone is empowered to achieve, share honest opinions, and collaborate towards success. I have had many different teams over the years, all unique and hugely loved by me. We've faced some challenges but always strive to be better with our enthusiasm for the future and by embracing and reframing failure in order to develop goals that help us exceed expectations the next time around. My new, perfected team and I continue to battle through Covid and we're thankfully still standing strong. Our beautiful clientele have been the most loyal, supportive and understanding group of people we could ask for. Your ongoing support has had more of an impact than I can say, I truly thank you from the bottom of my soul. We have had to put in a lot of time and word to ensure Covid safety, but we could not have done it without your patience and loyalty. Thank you for all the referrals, feedback and support - you are all amazing. All the best, Evelina Kemp

MISS MOTIVATOR With Women's Health Week happening this September, we catch up with Rachel from Miss Motivator to hear about the exciting women's health event she has planned and the special guests who will be there on the day.

H

i Rachel. Can you please introduce yourself to our readers? I am a mother of three beautiful, energetic boys, and I have a passion for running, strength training and the great outdoors - anything from camping to trail running! I enjoy chocolate, champagne and coffee (I’m only human). I am the owner of Miss Motivator Women’s Workouts and my focus is helping women to feel great, no matter what their age or stage in life. Whilst I am a fitness professional, I am also a working mum and wife. I understand that eating well and exercising can feel like a huge juggle with family life, busy jobs and running after kids. I work with women to help them find balance and introduce healthy habits and systems that support their busy lifestyles. You take women’s health very seriously, which is wonderful. Can you tell us why this is so important to you? As a fitness professional who specialises in working with women, it is at the forefront of my mind always. My goal is to help people feel healthy and strong. Often women come to me completely exhausted, feeling flat and fatigued. They could be a new mum, a busy mother of school age kids, a lady with mature aged children, or those experiencing menopausal changes. It is very common for women to put everyone else first and ensure they are well looked after, 60 GREATER PORT MACQUARIE

many times at the expense of their own health and wellbeing. Sometimes we are so busy being “busy” and looking after everyone else, that we miss the signs and symptoms of our bodies telling us that it needs a little attention. This is where I fit in. I am that friendly reminder and rock for these women to have supporting them. I see my role as an educator of women, to help them to understand their bodies and minds better. I believe that if women are armed with knowledge, we are more able to understand our own health needs and take appropriate action. In order to be in the best health we can, we must take a holistic approach. This includes addressing everything, including physical health and fitness, nutrition, mindset, stress management and pelvic health. We cover all of these topics and more in my programs. Having the right support is so important for women. For my clients, I connect them to the relevant health services that will support and aid them in their growth. It is imperative that women are well educated in all areas of health, so they can be looked after and supported. This is no different for women who are new mothers to those approaching the later stages in life. Being supported and connected is important. There is no reason we can't be the fittest and healthiest we have ever been as we move through the stages of life. With Women’s Health Week being 7th - 11th

September, you have teamed up with some other businesses to bring a super exciting event together. Can you introduce us to the ladies and what the event is all about? I will be hosting a fun workout event on Saturday 5th September, 9:30am at Oxley Beach to celebrate Women's Health Week. This will be a fantastic educational event for women of all ages. It will include a Miss Motivator workout and provide local women with the chance to connect with some great health professionals from the area. On the day, Grayce Gerk, women’s health physiotherapist of Physio and Pilates Collective will be on hand to educate us on pelvic health. Amanda Fletcher, nutritionist of Healthy Behaviour will be available to talk through any nutritional needs people might have. We will also be providing other useful resources for women around women's health. Numbers are limited, so please ensure you secure your spot as soon as possible. COVID restrictions will be strictly adhered to for the safety of all in attendance. How can our readers get involved in this event? Readers can email me at info@ missmotivator.com.au or send me a text message to 0438 388 552. We also have a great Facebook community page, where there is information about how to register - @missmotivator womens workouts. Thanks Rachel.

My father came to Australia under the illusion that the proportion of women to men was heavily skewed in his favour and work was abundant. Dad was the eldest of seven children to grow up in regional County Kerry in the Southwest of Ireland. He was born into a family of dairy farmers, who were quite poor. I think my father saw coming to Australia as an opportunity to escape a life of frugality and the commitment to the demanding farming lifestyle. He successfully procured a project in Old Bar in 1985 and decided to stay and call it home. Moving to the other side of the world to establish a business is a seriously gutsy move - would you say the risk the Kelleher family took has paid off? Was there any moment that you doubted yourselves and thought … hang on a minute, we’ve made a huge mistake? The risk my father took in coming to Australia was huge in my eyes. As the eldest son, it was expected in those days in Ireland that he would inherit the farm. By coming to Australia, he virtually opted out of his claim. anufacturing is a sector that has significant potential for regional areas in a post COVID economic recovery period. Government and business have now realised that Australia must look to domestic production to ensure its own supply chains are secure. This means less reliance on cheap imports and greater emphasis on Australian made products. This does not mean a return to the large format labour intensive factories of yesteryear, which are clearly not competitive in 2020. Our strengths are in smaller specialised manufacturing, which involve high tech products being produced with maximum use of automation such as AI controlled robotics. Many local manufacturing success stories have already demonstrated how enterprise, innovation and technology combine to create that winning formulae. Local businesses such as Bale Defence Industries, HF Hand, Birdon Marine, Eastland Trusses, Expressway Spares, Trailer Factory and many others are long standing successful, local enterprises who employ local people, produce a wide range of products and export outside the area. JASON KNIGHT.

Branding designer, on the value of branding and telling your story through design. With the recent tech push, I’ve seen businesses rush to run ads and spend money on SEO when they haven’t established their brand foundations. I believe like-attracts-like, so it’s important to know who your customers are, so we can align your brand face and voice to match. These foundations are more than a style guide - they are the brand essence, the vibe. Think of your brand like a person; it has a face and a voice but more importantly, it has a feeling. This feeling is expressed through every touch point, and we need to be aware of it before we start any marketing campaigns. Take Nike; everything they put out has

an element of “confidence” - you can do this - it encourages greatness. And, it’s this repeated feeling or vibe that makes them stand out in your mind. Now to your story; how does your brand story build trust, authenticity, connectedness to your audience? For me, I’ve seen the video of “Why my family moved to Port Macquarie” (Port Macquarie Council) connect to lots of clients - not because they were locals, but because they felt me. They connected to my story of my father’s death, they understood the need to escape the business of Sydney, they untimely felt that they knew me enough to press “connect”. So, where are you at in your business? Have you got a story that connects to people's hearts, or are you pushing ads to another boring webpage?

make sure your content stands out from the crowd. Jane Hillsdon, of Dragonfly Marketing, recommends: “If you want to stop your target audience in their tracks when they are on the scroll in their social feed, it's all about having a thumb-stopping image to accompany your post”. Authentic and eye-catching images build connection, as Jane explains. “You can use human expression, human connection, beautiful lighting and interesting backgrounds to catch the eye of your target and help them to notice you.” Once you have your audience’s attention, they’ll arrive at your website. Think of your website as the reception desk for your business. This is your opportunity to offer prospective and returning customers a warm and inviting experience, replicating the experience you would offer them face to face. The key elements of an engaging website include: memorable branding, intuitive design, impactful photos and video, and informative content. To assist with planning an effective website for your business, here are a few more tips from local creative professionals, each drawing on years of experience in their field.

JO McNAMARA. Marketing consultant and writer, on the value of content and blogging. Good quality written content on your website is essential for building trust and helps your target audience understand your brand message. Once you’ve written your key website pages and optimised for search engines, it’s time to consider ongoing content creation. Blogging is a good opportunity to add a variety of keywords to your content, acting as a platform for regularly publishing newsworthy stories. Blog content can be repurposed as snack-size snippets for social media platforms. Essentially, the more content you have, the more likely you’ll be found in searches. For busy businesses, once a month is a good goal to aim for, but always track your analytics to see what works for you. Final tip - voice search is growing, so make sure your content is conversational.

OLLIE BROOKE. Web developer, on the benefits of Shopify as an ecommerce platform. For businesses looking to establish an online retail presence, Shopify offers a reliable and scalable e-commerce platform that integrates well with social media. They're all over every new social media update, Google Shopping feature and just about every payment and delivery processor that is available. By using Shopify, you're ensuring there's a tech team continuously updating your store to take advantage of the latest available channels and options.

Photographer and web developer, on the value of professional photography. Using stock library photos on your website can be very generic, and as most photo libraries are based in the US or Europe, they generally have a distinctly un-Australian feel about them. By hiring a professional photographer, you have much greater control over the look and feel of your imagery. Having your own original photography tells a much more realistic story for you to present to your potential customers. It also means that you can get consistency across your marketing. Instead of a random selection of images collected from all over the place, a good photographer can present you with a range of photographs that work together perfectly. If your business website is all about a product, service or location, then showcase that with your own professional photographs. For instance, you may manufacture a unique product, operate a local tourism business or be a custom home builder,

in which case the first impression you make when a potential client visits your website is often based on the photography you present. Commissioned professional photography that fits your brands image and appeals to your market can really make your business stand out from the rest.

Dr David Gillespie MP FEDERAL MEMBER FOR LYNE NEW DEAL SECURES A COVID VACCINE FOR EVERY AUSTRALIAN

THE LOCAL SCHOOLS COMMUNITY FUND

Australians will be among the first in the world to receive a COVID-19 vaccine, if it proves successful, through an agreement between the Australian Government and UK-based drug company AstraZeneca. Under the deal, every single Australian will be able to receive the University of Oxford COVID-19 vaccine for free, should trials prove successful, safe and effective. There is no guarantee that this, or any other, vaccine will be successful, which is why we are continuing our discussions with many parties around the world while backing our own researchers at the same time to find a vaccine. We are taking advice from Australia’s best medical and scientific expertise to ensure that the Government’s work to select, produce and purchase COVID-19 vaccines and treatments is based on the best available knowledge. Dr Brendan Murphy leads a team who have been meeting with developers and manufacturers working on a vaccine both domestic and international. The Government has also entered a contract for the supply of vital consumables, such as needles and syringes, to ensure that we can deliver vaccine doses as soon as we have them. Australia is contributing significantly to vaccine development work both in Australia and around the world, investing $333 million in vaccines, therapeutics and COVID medicines - including $256 million in vaccines.

The Local Schools Community Fund is benefitting students and our school communities by contributing to small scale projects and their associated costs. Its been great to get around and look at some of the great projects that have received funding across the Hastings & Camden Haven including; • Johns River Public School - Playground Restoration • Beechwood Public School - Kiss and Drop Zone • Huntingdon Public School - Completing Pathways to Improve Accessibility • Long Flat Public School - Long Flat School Goes Shady • Herons Creek Public School – Basketball / Netball court • Hannam Vale Public School - Future Focused Learning and Classroom Design • Kendall Public School - Covered Walkway • Lake Cathie Public School - New Musical Equipment for our School and Band • Wauchope Public School – STEM (Science Technology Engineering Mathematics) Teaching and Learning aids.

Money MATTERS with DAVID ROSS

FROM DIRECTION ACCOUNTING

BUDGETING NOT FUDGETING

D

o you have a budget? Or do you just fudge-it? When times are good financially, the last thing on many people’s mind is a budget. However, once finances, whether they be personal or business, become tighter, having a solid budget becomes a vital way of managing the dollars. It is still quite common though to see massive resistance towards budgeting. It is the financial equivalent to a healthy lifestyle … you know you need it, but it’s all too hard. And like the health and fitness industry, the gurus put so many different bright and shiny objects in front of us, that it just adds to the bad experience. So let’s look at a few stereotypes … the most common species of budgeters (or non budgeters) that we see: The Barefoot Brigade - Led by the popularity of the book, The Barefoot Investor, this species are easily identifiable by their combination of Orange ATM cards, each labelled with a specific name. For those who haven’t read the book, the Barefoot Brigade follow the concept of separating their funds in to “buckets”, each with a different purpose. By splitting their funds between everyday needs, mid term needs, emergency funds and savings, this style of budgeter follows the age old concept of allocation. Great method, but requires discipline. CAMPUS CONVERSATIONS

FROM CHARLES STURT UNIVERSITY

Ashley Whittington is an inspirational creative studying a Bachelor of Social Work at Charles Sturt University. She is also the winner of the Volunteer of the Year award and the driving creative force behind the unique Butterflies for Mental Health movement, that will see thousands of miniature origami butterflies adorning the Hastings during Mental Health Month and ArtWalk 2020. Ashley has collaborated with a number of local organisations and artists to bring this courageous project to life bringing community together through the power of creativity and conversation. shley, you moved from Mudgee to Port Macquarie to study at Charles Sturt. Can you tell us why you chose Port Macquarie for this next part of your journey? I moved to Port Macquarie from country NSW for a coastal change and a fresh start. Port Macquarie is a lovely town, with a balance between country, coastal, and urban living. Port Macquarie also appealed to me because of the great range of mental health services available, such as Lifeline, headspace, and Endeavour Mental Health Recovery Clubhouse. You live on campus in the university’s new residences; can you share what that experience is like? The Charles Sturt residences are a great setup; another thing which appealed to me when choosing Charles Sturt in Port Macquarie was the self-sustaining residences, which give the opportunity for independence, whilst also being supported by onsite ResLife staff. The residences have provided opportunities to meet a diverse range of people and are a supportive environment to live and study in. Your project was inspired by an ancient Japanese legend promising that anyone

A

who folds a thousand origami cranes will be granted a wish by the gods. You have adapted this Japanese art to incorporate thousands of butterflies. Can you tell us how the Butterflies for Mental Health project began? I wanted to provide an opportunity for the community to come together to talk about mental health. We bring into the conversation that origami is a mindful activity, which means that whilst doing it, people focus on the moment. That in itself is a really good way to start talking about the positive impacts of mindfulness on mental health. When people are enjoying themselves doing something creative, they are more likely to talk and listen. Was there a special significance behind choosing the butterflies? I chose the butterfly because it is a simple design and is intended to be able to be folded by people of all ages and abilities. I believe that mental health is a conversation for everyone, so by ensuring that everyone can be involved, the conversation can be bigger. The butterflies are also very visually effective and represent transformation. All around the world, people view the butterfly as representing endurance, change, hope and life. Some people associate their recovery with butterflies, emerging from cocoons and flying. Can you tell us a little more about your hopes for the project and how the community can become involved in Butterflies for Mental Health? Butterflies for Mental Health will create displays for the community to act as talking points for mental health and a reminder for mental wellness. I hope the project brings about increased awareness and representation of services that are available to those in need. So far, we have linked in Lifeline Mid Coast, Endeavour Clubhouse, Charles Sturt University, New Horizons, headspace, Neami, Inpatient and

Outpatient at the Base Hospital who will all be folding as part of the collaborative works. We have approached some artists to help us put the beautiful displays together - Brad Collins, Jennifer Broughton, Kingo’s Art and many more. We are launching the event on Tuesday 29th September at Charles Sturt University, 10am in the Creative Hub at the campus, with a socially distanced exhibition of works. The works will go on display during October for Mental Health Month at the hospital, in reception of services, medical centres, psychologists and Port Central hanging above the elevator. Sunset Gallery is also supporting the project - providing us with some technical advice. We invite people to join us at a public folding event at Port Central in the creative space beside the escalator, to encourage everyone from the community to create their own butterfly. This will run for the first week of September in the lead up to Mental Health Month and throughout ArtWalk. People can also get involved by folding butterflies in their own businesses or homes and getting in contact through our Facebook page to join the project and have their own butterflies included in the creative displays across our community. Charles Sturt will be adorning the exterior of their campus with a special butterfly creative work in honour of Ashley’s project to bring awareness to Mental Health Month. Congratulations on your award and project, Ashley - we look forward to seeing your project come to life! csu.edu.au/openday

He worked as a crew leader in back burning operations and wildfire suppression; supervised heavy plant working on containment lines; and assessed and dealt with problem trees. Luke said the hardest part was comprehending the sheer scale of loss on every level. “Going to work each day and wondering if my own land and property were going to be there when I got back and sending my family and pets to town for a number of days, because it was just not safe for them to stay home ... DEAN EVANS THE FOREST FIREFIGHTER

Dean Evans is employed specifically as a forest firefighter on the South Coast. When he’s not

fighting fires, Dean is supervising machinery repairing roads, controlling feral animals

and weeds, or leading a team carrying out controlled burns during the cooler months.

O

ver summer Dean was deployed five times to the North Coast, from August to November, and was then on the fireline in the Batemans Bay area through to February working as a sector or divisional commander. Dean said with so much fire in the communities, there were times when they were directed to fall back and proceed to protect their own homes. “Every little win counted, whether it was holding the fire up for a day or two for more containment lines to be built, saving homes, and sometimes the same homes again over a week-long period. The support and gratitude from the community for the efforts we were making trying to save their properties really helped,” said Dean. How well do you think all the agencies worked together/supported each other? KIRINARI COMMUNITY SERVICES

Angie Dellow is a support coordinator with Kirinari Community Services and dedicates her time building connections, implementing services and supporting those within our community on a daily basis.

H

i Angie. Please introduce yourself and share a little about your role at Kirinari. Hi there. My journey in life started in New Zealand and I am the youngest of four girls, two of whom have disabilities. I moved to Port Macquarie nearly three years ago from Queensland and have certainly not regretted the move. I love everything about the coast and am often found walking some part of the coast on the weekends with my dog and friends. I am employed with Kirinari as a support coordinator, and I assist NDIS participants to fulfil their goals and aspirations through their NDIS plans. Support and connection plays a critical role within our lives. How does Kirinari aim to enrich the lives of its customers? Kirinari enriches the lives of our customers through individualised solutions and choices by providing high quality services and supports, providing great places to live and connecting people with the right supports and services so they can live a rich life in our communities. How people with disabilities were treated when I grew up was very different to how it is now and upholding the rights of all people, especially people with disabilities, is very important to me - and something that we at Kirinari do very well. Our customers are at the heart of everything we do. What does a typical day on the job look like for you? I assist NDIS participants in every part of 88 GREATER PORT MACQUARIE

their plan, from the implementation of supports and services right through to the plan review stage at the end of the plan. When a new plan comes through to me, I meet with the participants and their families to determine what kind of support and services they require. I help participants by arranging assessments, which could be with an occupational therapist or speech pathologist, for example. Some people require ongoing therapy. It is all about matching the right supports to the needs of the participant. A big part of my role is liaising with NDIS on behalf of my participants and supporting them through their plan review meetings, to ensure they get the funding that matches their needs. I want to make sure my participants are getting the most out of their funded support, so we adjust support accordingly when their needs change and ensure they are meeting their NDIS goals. Sometimes problems arise, and my role is to identify solutions with participants and their families. An essential part of my role is to build connections with formal and informal supports - we want to wrap as many supports around a person as needed, so they are safe and connected to their community. I also teach my participants how their funding works, so they have more choice and control in their life. During COVID-19, part of my role was to

ensure my participants were safe, well and not socially isolated. This involved working with the services in place, to ensure we were still

providing a service in a safe way. For many of my participants, their support staff are their main point of contact in their world, so it was essential to continue connecting with the supports. I recently supported a participant who did not have support coordination through their core funding to set up his supports and services. This was a very positive move for him, as he has moved from being potentially homeless to now living independently with supports and therapies. What do you love the most about your role? There are so many great parts about my role. I enjoy pulling together supports that empower participants to be a part of our community. I sometimes get a text message from one of my participants with a picture they drew from their art therapy session, or heard about how they are more confident as a result of a group they joined or a certificate from a course they just completed in the community. I especially enjoy meeting the participants and their families, hearing their stories and helping to create positive stories with the use of their NDIS funds. I currently have capacity to take on new participants, so you are welcome to call me on 0408 637 880. Thanks Angie.

Support 4 Me KIRINARI

W

ho is Support4Me? Support4Me is a branch of Kirinari Community Services, providing a large range of services to the over 65 year old age group, as well as those with a disability. Our head office is based in Albury, and we also have offices and provide services in Port Macquarie and the Tamworth region. Our core principle across the organisation is integrity - being honest and having a consistent and strong commitment to providing quality services that are customer directed, and this is evident through the services and supports provided by our wonderful home care team. What are the services available to our community? Support4Me is a registered Home Care Package provider of Levels 1, 2, 3 and 4 support and assists customers in having true choice and control, ranging from the type of

service wanted, to who and when services are provided. We encourage and know there are great outcomes when the customer has greater independence, and this puts them in control over the services they receive. The Care Coordinator is there to facilitate and assist as much as the customer requests in determining their requirements and goals, which then assists in identifying the services needed. Our Support4Me coordinators also support customers or their family members who are unsure of what may be available, by explaining the process, types of services, as well as facilitating a referral to My Aged Care if required.

Services are directed by the customer. If Support4Me do not provide the support directly, we can organise and coordinate a referral to an appropriate provider. The main types of services we are often asked to provide directly are domestic assistance, personal care, shopping, meal prep and transport, and the types of services that we organise can be window and gutter cleaning, lawn maintenance etc. What is the process for those wishing to find out more information or access the services on offer? For more information, contact Jane Kennedy at the Port Macquarie office on (02) 5719 1060 or 0459 853 858 or Alicia Perkins: 0428 492 003.

LIFE, DEATH AND BEYOND We have one certainty in life, and that is death. Relle Hart's desire and passion to connect with this work has returned her to the very essence of her ancestors. By empowering those within our community who want to explore their path towards the end of life, Relle has found her purpose in supporting others.

H

i Relle. Please introduce yourself and share your connection to our region. Hi Claire. I’ve always been a bit of a wanderer; I’ve lived in quite a few places. The coast and the bush is where I feel most at peace, and at home. Living in the historic village of Bellbrook west of Kempsey for the past seven years, I count my blessings. With the peace and beauty of the Macleay Valley bush at my doorstep, whilst being close to some of the most gorgeous beaches in the world, I feel incredibly lucky. I also feel extremely fortunate to work with some really amazing and talented people in the communities on the Mid North Coast from Coffs to Port. Through a series of very fortunate and valued connections in Port Macquarie and Coffs Harbour, my business is really blossoming into something of value for people in our communities. What support do you offer those who engage with you? Working in this space means I am connected to an incredible community of Doulas Australia wide, affording a rich resource pool to draw from and collaboration that is imbued with a passion for changing the culture of death care, with care and compassion as a guiding force. Listening is the foundation of support. It’s not often we are listened to deeply. It’s a powerful way to connect with someone needing to explore their relationship to the many aspects of

the journey towards death. As I listen with curiosity, people are supported to uncover their way centred around self-determination, grounded in a holistic response. A person’s needs may be emotional, practical or existential/spiritual. I find people can often lose their sense of self in the medical or institutional experience, so by being able to offer time, presence, continuity and compassion for each person’s journey, there are opportunities for empowerment, bringing people back to themselves and back to what’s important for them. Information about options is a big part of this process, so people

can make informed decisions. We also take a bird’s eye view of the support network, actively looking for the strengths and also gaps that might need filling. Advance Care Planning is another important aspect of the work I do; it’s something all adults can benefit from, young and old. Support can be around legacy work, which creates space for people to leave something of themselves in the form of gifts from the heart. I have a passion for supporting people in capturing their stories through the medium of digital storytelling, a really brilliant way of sharing an intimate view of ourselves. And finally, I really love supporting people to be empowered to work out the best way to be with and farewell themselves or someone precious who is actively dying, or has died, through creating a death plan, facilitating vigils at home or in a facility and DIY funerals. These are the ways we used to respond to death, before death became more of an institutionalised event. I believe in the incredible healing power of these old ways, and it’s a privilege to support families who want to have an active role in the care of their person to do so safely and legally, with the utmost compassion. >>> GREATER PORT MACQUARIE

What would you like to see evolve in the future around death? I’d love to see more young people getting engaged in creative ways, and more work done in schools around death and bereavement. I’d also like to see changes to the regulations and systems, making it easier and less confusing for families to holistically care for their people or themselves in death, including the establishment of more green burial grounds and some of the new and innovative ways of returning our bodies to the earth. I think some of these changes could offer us more ease around death and bereavement. There is a lot of trauma around death in our communities. WHAT STARTED OUT AS A HOBBY INVOLVING HER LOVE OF ANIMALS, QUICKLY TURNED INTO A BLOSSOMING BUSINESS. Ruby Knight from Port Paws Pet Sitting is a modern day animal whisperer; vet nurse by day / pet sitter by night.

H

i Ruby. Please introduce yourself and share your connection to Port Macquarie. Hi there. My name is Ruby Knight, and I run Port Paws Pet Sitting. I have lived on the Mid North Coast for most of my life and grew up in Lake Cathie. My mum was a popular GP there, so I spent a lot of my childhood and teen years between gorgeous Lake Cathie and Port Macquarie. Animals are a big part of your daily life. Where did your love and devotion to animals come from? From a young age I was always drawn to animals and wanted to be a vet. Both my mother and I were huge animal fans, so we always had pets around. I grew up with dogs, cats, birds, fish and even rabbits. They made great company, and I was never lonely while I had my pets to keep me occupied. There was always somebody to be walked, washed or cleaned up after. Throughout my adult life I have mainly stuck to having cats. I currently have three - Beam, Lita and Luna, all of whom have been foster kittens I have cared for over the years. There’s only been one dog to steal my heart so far, my little best friend Tilly, who I recently lost after 13 years of incredible friendship. Tilly was more than just a dog; she was family to me, and I miss her dearly. Animals are a big part of who I am; they have been a constant throughout my life.

Paws PORT

And that devotion certainly keeps you busy. Not only do you have a day job, you also run your own side hustle - Port Paws Pet Sitting. Tell us a little about your business and why you started? While living in Sydney, I completed my Animal Studies Certificates 2 and 3 and had been working as an “animal attendant” for a few years. When I returned to Port Macquarie in 2017, I couldn’t find any similar work, so decided to start something of my own. Port Paws started out as a hobby for me - a way to stay busy while I worked a casual admin job, earn some extra cash while getting out of the house and meeting lots of lovely people and pets. Shortly after starting “Port Paws”, I decided to complete a course in vet nursing, to hopefully open my career options. Towards the end of completing my Certificate 4, I secured a position on the team at Port Macquarie Veterinary Hospital as a vet nurse. This gave me the opportunity to meet lots of people who were in need of the services that Port Paws offered. Port Paws has quickly become popular among clients spreading word of mouth, so I decided to expand my team to include Alicia, who has been with me since 2017 and our newest member Rachel, who has been with us for just over a year. Alicia holds a Certificate 3 in Animal Studies and Rachel has also completed her vet nursing course. Port Paws caters for animals who require

care, attention and exercise. Tell us about the services you have on offer. Port Paws offers a range of pet care services, such as overnight pet sitting in your home, dog walks and our popular “feed and go” option for anyone who needs their pets checked on, fed, played with and cuddled while they are away. Our most popular service is our dog walks by far; we don’t just do the run of the mill walk around the block. Our doggies are treated to long walks on our stunning local beaches, and visits to the dog parks with appropriate and safe off leash play. We offer a pick up and drop off service for all dog walks as well. What does a typical day on the job look like, and what do you love most about your role? A typical day for me starts with being woken up by a hungry fur baby telling me it’s time for their breakfast! After I feed, water and play with my overnight pet sit, I head home to feed my own kitties. Once they have been sorted, I get ready and travel to pick up my two dog walks. My job as a vet nurse can be filled with the less happy parts of pet ownership - sick or injured animals and sadly, sometimes the end of a pet’s life. Pet sitting and walking is the fun part; my day is filled with lots of belly rubs and fur babies. Nothing makes you feel more loved than seeing a happy tail wagging, waiting for their walk. The dogs love it and I love it; it’s a perfect balance for an animal lover. Thanks Ruby. GREATER PORT MACQUARIE

H

i Mick. Can you please tell us a little bit about yourself? Of course! My name is Mick Ramsey, and I am the director of Ramsey Built Constructions. I am a local, originally from Bonny Hills, and I have been in the building and construction industry for over 18 years now. Every step I have taken to get to this point has been a major personal achievement. I started my young family here in Port Macquarie at the age of 17; that same year I enrolled into a carpentry apprenticeship. I have worked for many great companies over the years, where I have built an excellent reputation and worked my way through the ranks of lead carpenter, site foreman, construction manager and project manager; these positions have equipped me with the knowledge and confidence to be able to kickstart RBC. How did Ramsey Built constructions get started? Planning the launch of my own construction business has always been something I have wanted to accomplish. During my childhood, my late father and grandfather were always involved in construction and developments in some way; I think those years then naturally led me into the direction I’ve taken with Ramsey Built. My brother, Ben Ramsey and I have both worked for forward thinking and reputable companies over the years; this has allowed us to have the knowledge, expertise and capacity to conduct both the building, construction and concreting facets of the business.

"TRUST IS JUST ONE OF THE THINGS WE BUILD WELL." Who is the team behind the name, and what is their expertise? Mick Ramsey - director and licensed builder of RBC. My background is in both site and project management, along with great people skills and the genuine ability to form trusting relationships with my clients; this is what our company foundation is built on. Ben Ramsey - director and lead concreter of our concreting side of the business. Ben's outgoing and passionate sense of humour, his knowledge and experience gives the opportunity for RBC to offer a broad range of different concrete construction projects. The rest of our team: Caleb Ramsey - apprentice carpenter; Caelum - leading hand carpenter; Gus project manager/carpenter; James - skilled labourer. We also have a handful of other great attributing team members, many of us have had the privilege of working together for many years in previous roles around Port Macquarie. RBC prides itself on having an awesome working environment and very skilled team. Tell us about the last 12 months in business. With the launch of RBC now at its 12 month milestone, we have been overwhelmed with the support and project enquiries we have received. You never know how the first 12 months of a business will go, so I am very grateful we have been able to achieve our goals. Having had a respected reputation throughout my career, I feel this has been reflected in the success RBC has received so far.

What are some of the feature projects you have either completed recently or are working on? From the very early stages we were lucky enough to secure two management contracts locally, one being the beautiful new Smartland Childcare Centre at Sovereign Hills and also the internal/external refurbishments of the local Port Macquarie courthouse. This was a good platform for locals to see that we had started our own building company, and we have since completed many building renovations, commercial fitouts and concrete projects, including the new Coast Café, Moorebeer Brewery, our Lighthouse Beach and North Shore residential renovations, to name a few. It has been a very busy past month preparing contracts for some exciting new projects to come … we can’t wait to share these with you. What can customers expect when they come to Ramsey Built Constructions? Our motto at RBC is "Trust is just one of the things we build well". We pride ourselves on building trusting relationships with our clients from day one and ensuring communication is always a top priority. Our team is friendly, approachable and has the skill level to ensure every project is completed with a high level of quality workmanship. We have vast knowledge in the industry, have created close relationships with many other trades and suppliers and take immense pride in every project. High rental demand in the Hastings area + low interest rates = A GREAT TIME TO INVEST IN PROPERTY!

A

ustralia’s record breaking low interest rates have been a huge win for those home owners paying off their mortgages, but on the flip side it has really put the squeeze on investment returns, especially for those investing in cash. A bank term deposit offering 1.5% paid at maturity is just not giving the return it used to. So why not use the low interest rates to your advantage? Over the past 10 years we have had a steady stream of returning clients building with us to start or increase their property portfolios. Why do they build new, rather than buy something older? 1. Control over size and design - build where you want with the design you want 2. Control over the fittings and fixtures - ensure the items included in the investment property are hard wearing, so not needing to be replaced in the short term, especially for items such as carpet and tap fittings 3. Start your investment off

new, with warranties on the building and on the fittings and fixtures - to ensure if something goes wrong early on, it will be all be covered 4. Tax advantages - there are numerous, but the stand out is maximising the available depreciation 5. The savings on stamp duty can be huge If building is not your thing, you can always buy brand new and still reap many of the benefits noted above. For example, a property we recently completed at 10 Clunes Street, Port Macquarie is ready for your tenants to move in. Priced at $579,000 with a rental appraisal from McGrath Real Estate of $520 per week, this offers a return on investment of 4.67% (gross before expenses) plus the potential for huge capital growth in this area. Add to this the benefits of a new building and fittings with warranties, and a fresh new modern home to attract quality tenants who will love it like their own.

T H E D U N N Y S P I T - The case of Hardy v Sidoti [2020] NSWSC 1057

T

here have been several NSW Supreme Court cases in the last few years that have drawn the attention of the press to the legitimate ownership of real estate by apparent “squatters”. The cases have attracted media attention, because they fly in the face of community expectations. How can someone who is not the registered owner of the land and who has not paid for the land become the rightful owner of the land? In NSW, this occurs quite rarely, and the legal foundations are complex and partly founded in the history of recording land ownership. Let’s start in 1858 with Sir Robert Richard Torrens in South Australia. Torrens was a parliamentarian who introduced the system of land registration and land transfer to Parliament as a private members bill. It was adopted, and the Torrens system is now used throughout Australia and many other parts of the world. The Torrens system provides conclusive evidence that the person recorded on the register has title to the property. However, there are some exceptions to this ... and one of those is the doctrine of “adverse possession”. Before the Torrens system, we had a system which is, unimaginatively but plainly, referred to as “Old System Title”. Ownership of property, under Old System Title, is established through a system of Deeds registered at the Land Titles Office. These are

not the title deeds we see today, but deeds of conveyance which did not refer to a plan like we have today, but instead provide a description of the length and width of the property and location of a property. In NSW, properties are generally converted from Old System to Torrens Title as they are bought and sold. During the conversion period, they are classified as “Limited Title”. “Limited Title” means that the boundaries of the land have not been investigated by the Registrar General. Limited Title is partly relevant to the case of Hardy v Sidoti, which I have referred to as the “dunny spit” case. This Supreme Court case concerned an area of land of about 3.3 square metres in Redfern, Sydney. This small parcel of land was once part of a small lane way that was created to enable the dunny cart to drive along the backyards of the houses to empty the backyard dunny. The laneway was situated on Mr Sidoti’s land and identified by an easement. As it was a laneway, the Sidoti property had a fence on its side of the laneway, and the Hardy property had a fence on its side of the laneway. The old laneway ran between the two fences. Sewage was introduced to Redfern, and the backyard dunnies, the dunny cart and the laneway became redundant. Over time, the laneway was filled with rubbish by the tenants who then lived in the Sidoti property. Before 2005, Mr Hardy took down his fence, removed the rubbish from the laneway

and incorporated the laneway land into his own by making it part of a landscaped Japanese garden. Mr Sidoti purchased his property in 2017 and took down the old fence on his property and reclaimed the laneway as part of his property, as it fell within the boundary of his land. Mr Hardy took the matter to the NSW Supreme Court on the basis that the laneway land was now his. Mr Hardy relied on the doctrine of “adverse possession” and was successful. Adverse possession means that you have the right to claim that a property is yours because you have had possession of the property without the consent of the owner and without the owner having claimed the property for a period of 12 years or more. Generally, you have to have possession of the whole property but as the property was limited title, it was sufficient that Mr Hardy only had possession of part of the property. Other recent adverse possession cases include a developer who saw that a house was empty and abandoned. He renovated the house, paid the rates and leased it to tenants. After 12 years he successfully claimed the property as his by applying the doctrine of adverse possession. The property was valued at $1.6 million. What do these cases teach us? If you own or are purchasing a property that is limited title - get the boundary surveyed. Look after what you have. Your neglect may well become another person’s treasure. GREATER PORT MACQUARIE

uckily, big sound is more accessible and more impressive than it has ever been before. Two main methods exist to help you bring the cinema experience into your own home. Surround Sound 5.1 channel surround sound is a digital audio format which refers to an Audio/Visual Receiver (AVR) driving speakers in a layout consisting of two front channels to handle the main soundtrack of what is being viewed, a centre speaker to handle the bulk of the dialogue, two rear channels to handle surround and background noises, and a subwoofer which handles the bulk of the deep bass notes. Specific sounds are directed to specific channels by the AVR. 5.1.2 channel adds two channels over the head of the listener either via ceiling mounted speakers or speakers which fire sound at the ceiling, which subsequently are directed over the head of the listener. Dolby Atmos and DTS-X are the primary formats utilising this technology. The Atmos and DTS-X tracks are also more precise regarding where sounds are placed in relation to the listener over and above standard surround sound - in other words, an AVR capable of reproducing Atmos or DTS-X will sound much more impressive in any application. The traditional surround sound packs will consist of at least two floor standing speakers at the front of the room, which will also offer 110 GREATER PORT MACQUARIE

Whilst TVs get bigger every year - and look better as they grow - the quality of sound remains average at best. Just like a cinema, big screens at home need big sound to really create the atmosphere and excitement to complement the on screen action. the best performance of any speaker for those looking for music capabilities - especially if you love your music loud! In the event the traditional surround sound packs are too bulky, satellite speaker packs are still capable of producing impressive sound on a far smaller scale - great for smaller rooms or rooms where floor space is limited, given the ability for these speakers to be wall mounted. A third option - becoming increasingly popular - is the combination of in wall and in ceiling speakers, physically installed into walls or the ceiling, plus a subwoofer. This type of package is capable of recreating an audio experience similar to a floor standing speaker pack, whilst being effectively hidden away save for speaker grills, that can be painted the same colour as your walls. Surround sound is far and away the best method of delivering cinema style sound to your room, especially for dedicated theatre or media rooms. Soundbar Soundbars are the simple solution for poor TV audio quality - they are primarily designed to amplify the sound of the TV. As the soundbar technology has progressed, simulated surround sound - achieved by speakers delivering sound using directions and delays - is possible, although nowhere near as accurate as having two dedicated rear speakers. Certain bars have the capacity to add two rear channels wirelessly, including offerings from

Bose, Sonos and Klipsch - but the audio being delivered from the front of the room will not be as accurate has having three dedicated speakers doing the same job. Whilst soundbars can deliver significant volume levels while maintaining good quality of sound, it is almost impossible for a soundbar to fill a room with sound the same way a surround sound pack will. Certain bars have been designed to handle Atmos and DTS-X soundtracks via upward firing speakers integrated into the bars, and in some cases rear speakers. Samsung have been a driving force behind this technology. Soundbars are generally fine for most TVs and most room sizes in the event that the goal is to simply improve TV volume, or where surround sound isn’t practical. Soundbars with physical rear speaker options and/or Atmos capable bars would be the best choice for someone looking for solid audio performance specifically out of a soundbar. Selecting the right audio solution isn’t simply a matter of reading - your ears are the best guide to what you need. In addition to our huge range of soundbars, at Harvey Norman Port Macquarie we have nine dedicated surround sound packs installed and ready to demonstrate, consisting of traditional, satellite and in wall/in ceiling products from Denon, Klipsch and Yamaha. AVRs and speakers can also be mixed and matched or sold separately.

ell us a bit about yourself and your connection to the area. I am a born and bred Wauchope boy. I attended St Joseph’s Wauchope then Regional High School, I moved onto Vocational College in 2003 which led to the opportunity of Plumbing Apprenticeship. In 2005 I moved to Cairns where I met my wife, who happened to also be from Wauchope, we moved back home and started our family. We have two beautiful girls. I consider being a part of the community really important, as a business I sponsor local sporting teams in both Wauchope and Port Macquarie. Being a plumber is a pretty dirty job. How did you end up in the trade? I completed work experience in Year 10, and I liked the idea of plumbing with lots of different aspects to the trade and loved the idea of “no two days are the same” - and the fact you rarely work in the same place two days in a row was a selling point.

Rental Market IS G OING THROUGH THE ROOF!

ACCO R D I N G TO R E PO R TS , T H E PO R T M ACQ UA R I E R E N TA L M A R K E T I S O N F I R E R I G H T N O W ! W E C H AT T O H E M R E N T A L S , T O F I N D O U T E X A C T L Y W H AT I S GOING ON AND HOW IT EFFECTS US:

S

o, what is going on, and how is it affecting the local rental industry? The hype is true; our rental market is booming right now. Over the past three months, the number of homes available for rent has dropped significantly. Today, there are just 97 vacant properties, which is as low as it has been in a decade. At the same time, the number of people looking to rent has risen massively. For property investors, this is great. Gone are the days of worrying about their investment sitting vacant and losing income. Right now, if a tenant vacates, their property will rent quickly, they can command a higher rent, and they’ll have a choice of tenants. On the flip side, prospective tenants are becoming increasingly frustrated when they miss out on a home. At HEM, we genuinely want to help everyone find a home and do everything

we can to make the process as fair, transparent and stress-free as possible. However, the fact is that if you have five people apply for one property, four will miss out. We advise everyone to submit applications prior to inspecting a property and register for our new listing alerts. What is driving this shortage of rental properties? There has been a huge amount of change for us all in 2020, and the current rental situation is due to a sharp rise in people moving into our area from cities. It is a simple case of supply not keeping up with demand and is a direct consequence of the COVID-19 outbreak. People are reassessing their lives and escaping the so called “rat race”. And HEM Rentals. We are seeing more and more HEM LEASED signs around town.

What’s the secret? We are hugely proud of our rental team and feel that our fresh approach is starting to earn us a good reputation. Each week, we see new clients come to us based on referrals and recommendations, which is the best thing! Our approach is simple. We look after the properties we manage with the same care as if they were our own. We have put in place the best systems and offer a low property manager to property ratio, which means both landlords and tenants receive the best, one-on-one service. We have an experienced team who are dedicated to providing a reliable, cost effective service and above all, are good to deal with. We feel that if you are looking for more than just someone to collect your rent or find you a tenant, there is no place like HEM.

Organised by KIRSTY

After years of working in the cleaning industry, it was a light bulb moment where Kirsty Camilleri found herself pulling together business ideas, combining her expierence with her organisational skills and after a few days on socials, found herself booked out for weeks in advance.

T

ell us a little bit about yourself and your connection to Port Macquarie. My name is Kirsty Camilleri I am 39 years old and I have four children ranging from 2-18 years old. My husband Martin, who manages Koorong Books here in Port Macquarie, moved to Port Macquarie back in 2003 so that’s 17 years ago now, not sure if that classifies me as a local yet. Organised by Kirsty is your new venture that helps people get some order into their lives, tell us about it? I have been a cleaner since I was 18 years old, cleaning motels and private homes. I have always found this job to be flexible having had my first child at 20, it allowed me to be home with the kids as much as possible. I would find when I would go to a job to clean a clients home I would be more interested in wanting to reorganise their pantry, garage or wardrobe instead of vacuuming and mopping. Just before we went into isolation a good friend of mine had me come and stay with her for a week and help her tackle the massive job of reorganising her entire home. I enjoyed this so much I just couldn’t imagine not having the chance to do it again. One night I was sitting on the lounge and thought ‘I’ll just create a Facebook business page and see how it goes”. 24hrs later I was fully booked out two weeks in advance. What services can you help clients with?

118 GREATER PORT MACQUARIE

having an organised space helps me so much, I don’t get overwhelmed as easily or frustrated when I need to find something.

I can organise any space either in the home or office. The most common areas I’ve tackled so far are pantry’s, linen cupboards, toy rooms, kitchens, garages, home offices and the notorious junk cupboard! I sell the unwanted items via Facebook or gumtree, as well as drop off donations to Opshops. I take rubbish to the tip once the job is finished for the cost of the tip fees. I really don’t like to leave rubbish behind as It could become overwhelming and they may start picking through it again. I am also able to work with people who are self managed on NDIS. Being organised outside our minds can help with anxiety inside our minds. Why is having an organised home beneficial? For me personally I have always found that having an organised space helps me so much, I don’t get overwhelmed as easily or frustrated when I need to find something. I also feel there is something special about having only what you need and use. Don’t get me wrong I understand there are things we have that are special and important, so even more reason to have them stored safely and neatly. I recently helped a lady with her garage and it had 25 years of teaching resources inside and due to injury, she was unable to do anything with it

since ceasing work. She was so worried about all the resources being ruined. I was able to go in and repack everything in watertight plastic tubs, label it and when she is ready to return to work, she will know where it is. What three tips would you give to get started on the Spring cleaning? Choose one space at a time to work on, it will get out of hand if you try to do too many at once. Make piles as you go eg. Keep. Toss. Store. Donate. If you get stuck, it always looks worse before it gets better. Stop, take a breath and pick up the next item and ask yourself keep, toss, store, donate or return. What do you love about your role? I feel privileged that people trust me into their homes and into their mess, it can often be embarrassing for a person to show you the mess they feel is out of control and I understand it’s a big deal for a lot of people. I love getting to know new people and enjoy encouraging them in taking control of their homes. I absolutely love my job.
