presentation COBA COBA’s activity in Algeria started in 1978 in the field of design, consultancy, project management, observation and security of dams, water distributions systems, road infrastructures, environmental studies and agricultural management plans. In order to conceive these multiple projects, COBA runs for a long time an office in Alger that assures an important operational role, in coordination with the main office, giving support logistic and administrative support to the Portuguese engineers based in Argel. In the year 2007 COBA AlgÊrie was crated. An Algerian firm that supports the main office in project development, and composed by a multidisciplinary technical team of engineers.

our experience REHABILITATION Rehabilitation is the future of our area of activity. It is essential to think about the city and its structures (buildings, urban structures and outdoor spaces) as elements that participate in a history to preserve and upgrade. The intervention in an existing building requires the prior regard, the analysis of its history and the conscious decision of how to intervene. This intervention involves an integrated, coordinated and conscious design that gives the best answer to a set of constraints, including: aspects to keep, remove, in order to adapt and update the building to the new demands of performance at different levels (structural, acoustic, thermal and security) in accordance with a legal framework.

FOCUS GROUP was responsible for the refurbishment of the existing building located in the cross between Alexandre Herculano Street and Liberdade Avenue, where in the past October, Maxmara Feminine Fashion Store was opened. The main changes to the existing building were essentially the installation of an elevator, service stairs suppression, reinforced pavements to increase the fire protection as well as antiseismic behavior. The proposal gave a new light and use to the building backyard. To that effect its level was increased through its use by the Maxmara Store, at the ground level.

FOCUS GROUP was responsible for the design of the architecture, landscaping, civil engineer and technical installations for the head office, offices, Sadus Residence - Spiritual representants of the Swaminarayan Hindu Mission e its Temple, in Lisbon. The headquarters building of the mission and housing is a dwelling of Avenida Gago Coutinho, target of extensive refurbishment. The intervention kept facades and coverage as the original design, making the interior a modern and welcoming space.

The work focused in the rehabilitation and reorganization of existing buildings and the creation of a new front building, which includes the administrative services in contact with the library building, teachers and parents rooms. The design took in consideration todays highest environmental and energy efficiency standards.

Parallel to the improvement of the general use, maintenance and management conditions, according the latest environmental and energy standarts, the new design proposed the entire reorganization of the space and its enlargement, with the construction of 2 more buildings. The surrounding spaces include redesigned spaces including a terrace close to the bar and a larger green space area. The school with a capacity for 900 students, received significant comfort, environmental and security improvements, with rearranged gardens spaces and better accessibility. A new building was created assuring the connection between the existing pavilions holding new spaces such as the library or a multifunctional room, among others.

The building is located in a new urban area of the city and has a total area of 1.500 m2 over four storeys plus a mezzanine. It houses the offices of the company and also a residential area for expatriated staff. The project brief foresees an expansion of two equivalent volumes in the adjacent plots. The new headquarters of Microsoft in Portugal occupy a 6.200 m2 building designed by FOCUS GROUP in the new Parque das Nações district of Lisbon, built for the EXPO 98. With four storeys above ground and two underground parking levels, the building was conceived for low energy consumption and a high indoor environmental quality, achieved to a large extent by the use of high efficiency solar protection and the judicious use of natural lighting strategies.

From the simple 2 outlet store retail parks, to large 5 ha retail parks with up to 10 outlet stores with more than 2.000 m2 each. In every one of them, design was driven by functionality and efficiency. These commercial spaces include not only free public parking but also leisure areas such as playgrounds, in order to attract families making shopping a more comfortable experience. In our designs Retail Parks are extensions of the urban shopping areas, integrated in the same atmosphere. FOCUS GROUP was responsible for the water and sewer system design of the Loures Shopping, a Sonae Sierra mall. Opened in October 2005, this mall has 121 shops distributed in two floors, as well as 26 restaurants, 7 cinemas, 2100 underground parking places, a large supermarket and a 5,2 ha urban park. The design focused on sustainability and efficiency of the water management, in order to cut down on management costs, contributing to a better world.

More recently SONAE bought CARREFOUR extensive portfolio of approved shopping centers in Portugal, adapting the concept into CONTINENTE.

The Portimão Intermarché Supermarket is one of this spaces includes a large water element, lawns and recreational shaded areas.

The overall layout of theses supermarkets fits to a standard for all the European shops that are adapted to each countries legislation. The surrounding spaces are no exception and all the layout fittings are predefined, as well as all the materials and solutions.
