What is the top thing to say when talking dirty to men? 1. Tell him what you're wearing under your clothing. 2. Put on sexy lingerie and give him a tiny peek when he first sees you. It'll drive him mad to want to see more of your outfit all night...Until you allow him to see more. 3. Leave him a voice message when he is away 4. At a gathering 5. At your parent's house when you go by him 6. Right before parting for work 7. Email him some sassy notes 8. Fax it to him 9. Throw hot little texts on his cell phone while is at a sports game with his buddies It will heat up if you are talking dirty to men at unusual places like: 1. Your parent's house 2. At the food store 3. At church?...OK...oK...After church

When is the most excellent timing for this during lovemaking?

You start by telling a physical move that he has made to you and that you had enjoyed. Don't worry about feeling embarrassed; he will be more paying attention in the images that you are creating in his imagination. Are you concerned that you won't be excellent at this?
By Susan Heyman
irty talk is a type of pillow talk. You use vivid words to augment sexual enjoyment before and during the lovemaking. Talking dirty to your guy can be anything from giving him vivid images using slang words, to whispering curse expressions to your guy's ear. If you feel timid about it, don't be; only the two of you will be aware of it. The more you let go, the better you will be. Your intimate life should be hot and wild. It's a form of "sense of adventure" that you are giving to your guy. You might say that you are a "good girl" and you don't do those things. Well here is my take on this; if you have preferences in bed, and your spouse is giving enough to fulfill them, maybe I can do my part. Some guys find it makes them hornier. You can harvest the rewards from this lover's game. It makes you feel sexier because you are seeing your man enjoy himself due to your influence. You are providing your guy more excitement. Lovemaking is at its best when you let go; abandon yourself to the other person is a joyful experience. Some women use this not only in the bedroom, but in their husband's e-mail or work's voice mail. Your guy gets excited to get home and gives you a nice "reward"... what do you have to lose? 18 FOCUS of New York 2014
From the mid to the end.
Guys are not hard to light up. It doesn't take a great deal for them to get turned on. If you feel uncomfortable, get some help with a glass or two of wine... Just to break the ice. But please! Don't develop a drinking problem! Having trouble "getting it up"? Talking dirty to men might be able to help. Use this once in a while; they can get too enthusiastic to this. In addition, some men can be a bit turned off or uncomfortable with you unexpectedly starting to talk dirty to them. You can propose to him to do the alike and it will balance the dynamics. You can get swear words at the Urban dictionary. It is a slang dictionary. You'll be able to get different variations of a slang word. For instance, let's find a variation of breast; there is boobie, nipples, boobs, funbags, just to show a few. Use it, and your imagination. Have fun!

for Multi-Tasking Moms
Even the most skilled multi-tasking working woman knows keeping everything on track is tough. From work schedules to social calendars to finding time for yourself, it’s easy to get stuck in a rut with a chaotic routine. Day to day is a challenge enough and that holds true for moms across America, even famous ones like actress Malin Akerman.
• Don’t Skip Breakfast. It’s important for the entire family to start the day off right. Breakfast gives you energy for the day and keeps you from caving into all the bad options when hunger hits mid-morning. • Ready for Anything. Because of her hectic schedule, Akerman stocks the fridge with nutritious snacks that are easy to grab and go. Her favorite treat is new Müller FrütUp Mango, a creamy yogurt topped with whipped fruit mousse which she describes as pure bliss. • Take a Stroll: Akerman always tries to stay active. She loves going on long evening walks with her husband and son.
Akerman admits the joy of motherhood and all of the increased activity that comes with it makes her balancing act tough, especially with her new role on the small screen. The ABC “Trophy Wife” star wants to make the right choices without sacrificing time, taste or nutrition, while savoring every moment with her baby and husband.
• Play Guessing Games: Akerman likes to keep her muscles guessing, so she is always changing up her exercise routine. Right now, her favorite exercises are cycling class or pilates.
“Now more than ever, I appreciate the little delights in each day. For me, that’s everything from getting to spend extra time with my family to enjoying my favorite snack during a break on set,” said Akerman. “I fell in love with Müller yogurt because it’s a delicious, nutritious snack that’s easy to grab and go.”
• Buddy-up: She really enjoys exercising outside in the summer. Akerman just grabs a girlfriend and goes for a hike. She loves that it keeps both of them on track. For a behind-the-scenes look at Akerman’s daily routine, summer tips for a successful balancing act and a full line-up of tasty yogurt flavors, visit: www.Facebook.com/mullerquaker.

Whimsical and Grandiloquent Art Characterized by a unique style and precise designs where the combination of a matte-shine effect on gold, and meticulous craftsmanship make for exceptional jewelry pieces where gold and precious stones come to life. This collection is inspired by the embroidery, fabrics, and colors of Spain’s Golden Age. This touch of color and these brocades can be seen in pieces crafted in yellow or white gold with amethyst presented as grandiloquent and whimsical art. Jewelry with generous volumes and rich decoration where the characteristic and signature Carrera y Carrera matte-gloss effect can be appreciated. Refined and ornate pieces reflect the image-preoccupied culture that existed during this period. For Carrera y Carrera, its link to Spain is essential as a source of inspiration for the development of its collections. The entire creative and development process of each jewelry piece takes place wholly in the Madrid workshop. Each step in the creation of a piece is influenced by the Spanish character that has become one of the fundamental pillars in the evolution of the company’s excellent trajectory throughout its history. Carrera y Carrera endures thanks to a standard of incalculable value – the savoir faire of the nearly 60 jewelers who work in its Madrid workshop, where tradition and the expertise of master goldsmiths are joined together. It is here that each jewelry piece is crafted entirely by hand, giving each one a flawless grandeur.

Peace and Natural Beauty By Kerry Tropeano
Renowned designer Paloma Picasso creates a stunning new jewelry collection inspired by the olive branch as a symbol of peace and abundance. The new collection, Paloma’s Olive Leaf, captures elements from the olive groves surrounding her home in Morocco, a place of serenity, and also represents a link to her name. “ Paloma means dove in Spanish,” she says. “ We are all familiar with the dove carrying an olive branch as a peace offering. The jewelry I’ve created pays tribute both to the messenger’s noble mission and gardens as a refuge of peace and tranquility.” 24 FOCUS of New York 2014
The collection is sumptuous yet delicate, a garden of precious metals shot with gemstones. A bib necklace traces the tender leaves and stems in an intricate, openwork pattern of brilliant green tsavorites and 18 karat gold. This elegant profusion of leaves forges pendants in gleaming gold or sterling silver, as well as one-of-a-kind rings in 18 karat white gold and diamonds. Gold cuffs echo the ancient olive wreathes that crowned the glorious and victorious. The designer places beautiful and colorful gemstones among leafy branches of gold or silver. Rubellite and green peridot cabochons are entwined in ring settings of 18 karat gold with diamonds. Pear-shaped rubellites accent luxuriant drop earrings of gold and sparkling diamond leaves. There are also earrings with perfect ovals of translucent blue topaz suspended boldly from little gold leaves. Tiffany’s skilled artisans hand cut and set each stone to unleash maximum color and light. Paloma’s Olive Leaf is wonderfully fluid and moves with an easy grace dazzling in the light like leaves lifted on a gentle breeze or flowers dancing under the sun. Paloma Picasso introduced her first collection of jewels for Tiffany & Co. in 1980. Her use of colorful gemstones, which brought fiery orange opals and shocking pink tourmalines into fashion, and her use of “ Scribbles,” “ Graffiti” and her signature “ X” instantly established her as jewelry design’s newest star. With her unerring eye for glamour and her informed sense of personal style, she continues to create—and Tiffany continues to craft—exuberant and visually stunning jewels favored by the world’s most stylish women.
Paloma’s Olive Leaf is available at select Tiffany & Co. stores worldwide.
Beauty for Every Woman’s Skin
Luxury skin care brand blending eastern skin care philosophy and western dermatology. Amarte has been the leading skin care line in Asia since its Korean debut in 2001, and has just launched in the U.S. under the direction of board certified dermatologist Craig Kraffert, President of Amarte Cosmetics and Founder of DermStore.com. Amarte products follow a unique, multifaceted regimen – cleanse, hydrate, rejuvenate and protect – designed to bring out the clarity, brilliance, and beauty of every woman’s skin. All products are dermatologist tested, approved, and recommended by Dr. Kraffert himself.
• Highest retinol content in the industry: Amarte has designed a proprietary retinol preparation method to deliver the highest retinol content available (the Eyeconic Eye Cream clocks in at 3.8%!), using Eastern nanoparticle technology to promote deep penetration and tolerability, in conjunction with bioorganic ingredients that fully nourish skin. • Advanced formulation technology beyond U.S. capabilities: Amarte’s formulational mastery synergizes East and West traditions under guidance of scientists at Korea’s BioRIC and artists at Amarte, creating a symphony of science and nature that elevates the health and beauty of all skin types. • ActivElements and ActivExtracts: Conventional Western ingredients are traditionally simple substances sourced from a few key suppliers. Amarte’s eastern methods combine bioorganic extracts and elements in complex, time consuming methods. Periodic elements (titanium, zinc), active moisturizers (hyaluronic acid, ceramides) and multifunctional molecules are combined with unique natural extracts (mushroom emollients, mallow, elder and lily flowers) in ways not touched by western science. • Airless pump technology: For maximized purity and skin care benefits, Amarte uses innovative airless pump technology, which preserves natural ingredients and ensures formulas remain consistent and product is completely dispensed. • A skin loving regimen worthy of your dressing table: Like a multicourse meal, each step in an Amarte regimen (cleanse, hydrate, rejuvenate, protect) is to be enjoyed in context with the overall experience. Clarity, brilliance and beauty are the fundamental goals of all Korean skin care regimens, and Amarte adheres to these strict standards with regimens that optimize cleanliness, overall brightness and lucidity. CLEANSE • Amarte Daily ExfoliPowder ($35): This 2-in-1 Wonder Wash uses refined, plant seed-based exfoliant to remove dry dull skin and gently cleanse in this formula delicate enough for daily use. Shake the powder onto hands and rub to activate the creamy cleanser, and smooth skin to reveal the most radiant you. • Amarte Daily Wonder Cleansing Foam ($40): A whipped-to-perfection cleanser made to refresh and pamper all skin types including oily and acne-prone complexions. Rich with ActivElements, its creamy lather lifts away impurities and prepares skin for hydration. HYDRATE • Amarte Aqua Veil Hydrator ($65): A cucumber-infused, ultra-light serum that optimizes hydration by releasing droplets of pure H²0 onto the skin to form a protective veil. A skin toner and serum in one, this unique moisturizer gives skin a silky, youthful radiance. REJUVENATE • Amarte Wonder Cream ($79): One of the most highly regarded products of the Amarte line, Wonder Cream aids in anti-aging and restoration, lightening sunspots while its rich therapeutic properties and mushroom emollient lovingly exfoliate and nourish skin for a supple, translucent complexion. • Amarte Hydro Lift Cream ($59): Strong enough to help reduce wrinkles and aging lines, but soft enough to hydrate and replenish the skin at any age. The silky formula protects, while retinol and adenine fight to alleviate the skin of wrinkles. Filled with caviar extracts and acacia collagens, this unique formula makes the skin brighter. • Amarte Eyeconic Eye Cream ($51): An anti-wrinkle rejuvenator that delivers the highest levels of enhanced-stability pure retinol, ActivExtracts, and ActivElements to give vitality and resiliency to the eye area. Deeply hydrating, it nourishes skin and promotes elasticity without irritation. Simple Solutions for Your
New Year’s Resolutions!
By Sterling Mire
As practicing spiritual life coach, I am often approached by clients who seek to fulfill important goals. Through my unique Art of Manifestation program, I am able to help them attain these goals when they create their wonderful New Year. Most of my clients want to make their New Year’s resolutions stick. But how do they do it? Right now, it's an exciting time to create New Year’s resolutions. Maybe yours include engaging going out friends, eating healthier, saving money, helping others or simply taking more time out for you! It may also be a confronting time when we think about past, unfulfilled resolutions. How do we keep these new resolutions from getting off track? I've created a simple Top 10 Tips list for keeping all of your New Year's resolutions right on target! 1. Be sure that you can commit. Is your resolution something that you truly want or does it just simply look good on paper? Create resolutions that inspire you the most at this time. Don't overwhelm yourself with too many commitments. Once those resolutions have come into being, you can create more – even before the year is up. 2. Keep your focus clear. Start your day with morning visualizations. See yourself with the desired results of your New Year's resolutions. This will keep you on track and connect you with the experience of doing it. 3. Keep a daily diary. Implement your New Year's resolutions into your daily or weekly plans. Schedule your resolutions into your day and write about them at the end of the day. This keeps them present and alive for you – and will help keep you on target! 4. Tell others. Share your stories of success and inspire others. Telling others what you are up to will keep you accountable, too. So, when someone asks you how your new workout routine is going, you can easily reply by saying, "Fantastic!" 5. Be determined. Don’t let anything take you off track and don’t let anyone – including you – talk you into allowing old habits to creep back in. It's easy to return to what’s familiar to us, but while familiarity may be comfortable, it’s not fulfilling. Remember, it takes a little time for your New Year's resolutions to become the new familiar to you and what is satisfying, too! Also, if you get off track, simply admit to it and get back on the horse. It’s really that simple. 6. Take bite-sized action. Take “bite-sized action.” Commit yourself to your New Year’s resolutions for just one month if you feel overwhelmed with big-picture commitments. After one month, determine whether you’d like to take on another month of engaging in your resolutions. Repeat this action. It takes about 21 days for change to occur, that is, for something to become more habitual and second nature. By the time a month is over, chances are, you’ve acclimated to your new lifestyle. Slipping back into old ways may prove harder than you think! Consistency is the key. If we can be consistent for a period of time, the rest is easy. 30 FOCUS of New York 2014
7. Use the buddy system. Your friend is another way to stay on the path! When someone else shares the same goals, it can keep us in check. Fulfilling on your goal is twice as sweet with someone else. There are lots of resolutions that could involve a buddy, such as: exercising, eating healthy, quitting bad habits and fun hobbies. Even if your New Year’s resolutions don’t involve others, you can still share your goals, which include that added support you need. 8. Visual reminders. Put images of what you desire everywhere on the refrigerator, in the bathroom, on your desk, on your screensaver, in your wallet, in your car. Wherever you spend time, put a visual reminder of what you want to come to fruition. 9. Reward yourself. At least once a week, do something extra special for yourself as a reward for keeping to your goals. Maybe it's an inexpensive massage, buying a beautiful piece of clothing, an adventurous horseback ride or maybe simply taking a scenic drive all on your own! 10. Acknowledge yourself. Give yourself credit for taking on new habits and choosing to make lifestyle changes. That alone is the first step towards success. Remind yourself that you are worth it! Keep moving in the right direction and you will find yourself fulfilling on those "hard to keep" New Year's Resolutions in no time! Creating and fulfilling your New Year's resolutions doesn't have to be an intimidating process. It takes just some practice and a little effort. Applying these tips can make the difference between making your New Year’s resolutions stick or breaking them. Before your new year is up, these resolutions will seem like second nature and you will not only reap the benefits of your New Year's resolutions, but you will say "hello" to a new you and a brand new way of life! Get Healthy and In Shape Family Features
Swimsuit season is here so it’s time to tone up, slim down and get ready for summer. Building lean muscle, burning fat and eating right is easier when you know what steps to take. Incorporating healthy habits into your daily routine can provide long-term results, according to two experts from Curves, Nadia Rodman, director of nutrition, and Katie Mitchell, director of exercise. Here are six tips to get you started on the path to better health:
Tip #6 Have a Coach: It helps to have a coach or workout buddy for accountability and motivation. It’s always more fun to work out with a partner and the added support will help keep you on track. Look for a gym or club that offers a coach that is hands-on and will meet with you on a regular basis.
Tip #1 Make Over Your Breakfast: A higher protein breakfast turns up your satiety signal and helps you fight cravings throughout the day. Consider a parfait made with fresh fruit and low-fat Greek yogurt that can add as much as 30 grams of protein to your day. Try this easy recipe: Combine 1 cup plain, low-fat Greek yogurt with 1/4 cup almonds, 1 cup strawberries and 1/2 cup blueberries or another favorite fruit.

Tip #2 Add Some Flavor to Your Water: Try flavoring your water naturally with fresh fruit and herbs, such as berries, orange slices, mint and lemon or lime slices. Simply fill a large pitcher with water or carbonated water, fruit, and/or herbs of your choice. Store in the refrigerator for about 3 hours. Pour water over ice and enjoy. Tip #3 Keep Healthy Snacks Handy: Be prepared when a snack craving hits. Snacks packed with protein help keep your energy level even so you don’t hit a sugar low in the afternoon. Good options to keep handy or in a desk drawer include a handful of almonds, a piece of beef jerky or dried pumpkin seeds. Tip #4 Add Strength Training: Be sure to incorporate resistance training into your exercise program. Resistance training helps build lean muscle, which builds your strength, creating a firm and toned appearance – plus it boosts your metabolism. Weight bearing exercise also helps build up bone density. Tip #5 Add Cardiovascular Exercise: While resistance training helps us build lean muscle, cardio activity will strengthen your heart and burn body fat. Look for a workout that includes both strength training and cardio exercise, such as Curves. Also look for activities the whole family can enjoy, such as charitable walks or runs in your community.

Fun Activities
for Moms, Kids to Enjoy Together
Photos courtesy of Getty Images
Family Features
With warm weather and kids’ freedom from school, there are extra opportunities for moms and kids to spend more time together. Whether your children are toddlers or school age, it’s important to find fun ways to spend precious hours with one another.
Watch the magic of fireflies: Enjoy cool evening breezes, while watching the special magic fireflies bring to a backyard. Catch a few in a Mason jar, and then release them after the kids are tucked in for the night.
Here are a few activities those of all ages can enjoy: Put a twist on movie night: Summer blockbusters have families flooding theaters in droves. Pack the whole family in the car, pop some corn and catch a drive-in movie. It’s an old-fashioned experience every kid should enjoy at least once.
Pack a picnic: Take a picnic lunch on your next outdoor adventure. Keep it simple, portable and healthy with good old peanut butter and jelly with healthy, delicious side dishes like baby carrots, sliced bell peppers and Dole Fruit Squish’ems squeezable fruit pouches. From orchard to pouch, they are made with fresh apples from the USA, and are an easy on-the-go summer snack.
Blow bubbles for a crowd: Create a bubble station on your front porch and wait for the neighborhood kids to congregate. After all, there is just something so simple and nostalgic about bubbles that everyone loves
Play extreme tic-tac-toe: Make an easy craft project that can be enjoyed all summer long. Paint a tic-tac-toe board on an old beach towel, and then mark ten Frisbees with an X or O. Now, you’re ready to play Frisbee tic-tac-toe anywhere outdoors.
Take a hike: Spend time exploring nearby parks, lakes and arboretums with the kids. Pack plenty of water and healthy snacks, such as Dole Fruit Squish’ems, squeezable fruit pouches. Each serving has 60 calories and contains 20 percent of the daily value of vitamin C. Add an extra element of fun to your hike by going on a treasure hunt.
Keep them growing healthy: Pick a spot in the yard to create a small garden or plant a few vegetables in large pots. Those few moments caring for plants together each morning may just be the most precious ones of the day.

Pick the
Right College
Family Features
Selecting the right college means not only choosing where you’ll live for the next four years, but finding the best fit for your personality, interests and your family’s financial situation. It’s often one of the biggest decisions many teens have ever faced. If you’re considering several colleges, the best way to compare them is to make a list of the things that are most important to you and see how each school stacks up. You might include proximity to home, athletics or arts programs, campus size, etc. When listing pros and cons, consider cost, academics, social life and the impact it will have on your future career.
For example, Foresters™, an international life insurance provider committed to family well-being, offers the Foresters Competitive Scholarship Program2, which awards up to 250 tuition scholarships for higher learning worth up to $8,000 each in the US and Canada for eligible members and their spouses, children and grandchildren. Rank your priorities Cost may be one of the biggest factors when choosing the right college, but there are many things to consider while researching each prospective school. Though some people judge a school solely on published college rankings, it may be more important to find the rank of specific departments within those schools. A top medical school or culinary program could be part of a school that doesn’t have a high overall ranking. Assessing what you value most in an educational program will help put you on the path to success.
Narrow down top choices Plan a few campus visits to get a feel for campus size, dorm life, the school’s resources and how helpful school staff will be. Finally, make sure any scholarship you might be awarded can be used at the schools you have on your short list. For example, Foresters Competitive Scholarship can be used for tuition at any vocational or trade school, college or university offering a full-time academic program of two years or more.
Consider costs According to the most recent Annual Survey of Colleges by the College Board, students attending a four-year college in their own state will spend an average of $17,860 on tuition, fees and room and board during the 2012-2013 academic year. The average price tag jumps to $39,518 per year for a private four-year college1. To cover the costs, parents and students may need to consider student loans, financial aid and scholarships. You can get a list of available scholarships from your high school guidance counselor as well as the colleges and universities you want to attend. It’s important to start your scholarship search early and look at all possible sources.
If you find yourself overwhelmed by all of the choices, just make the best decision you can with the information you have. Many students change majors during their college days. What may be the best fit academically now can change as quickly as what you want to be when you graduate.
Foresters™ is the trade name and a trademark of The Independent Order of Foresters, a fraternal benefit society, 789 Don Mills Road, Toronto, Canada M3C 1T9; its subsidiaries are licensed to use this mark. 1College Board Advocacy and Policy Center: Trends in Higher Education, 2012-2013 http://trends.collegeboard.org/college-pricing/figures-tables/average-published-undergraduate-charges-sector-2012-13 2This program is administered by International Scholarship and Tuition Services, Inc. Savvy Money Tips
Family Features
for Your Teen
Most parents have learned things about money they wish they had known at a younger age. But when it comes to broaching the topic with their own teenagers, about a third would rather talk to them about smoking, drugs and bullying 1 than money. Parents can take the angst out of teaching money management by working it into everyday routines. “Your kids are most likely interested in money and having more of it, but they may not know where to start,” says Susan Ehrlich, president of financial services for H&R Block. “Teaching money skills before they graduate will help them make smart choices and learn from their financial missteps now, so they’re better prepared when they’re on their own.” H&R Block provides free financial education for teens through H&R Block Dollars & Sense, which offers these tips: Encourage learning by earning. You may or may not want your teen to hold down a job while in high school, but you can instill the concept of earning by encouraging occasional paying projects, such as babysitting or mowing lawns.
Save now, spend later. Open a savings account for your teen to plan for future purchases. If you’re able, offer to match a portion of their savings to encourage the behavior. This can help convey the difference between needs and wants. Verbalize your own wants for something the entire family can save for and enjoy together, then share your progress toward the goal. Set some limits. If your teen has a credit card, set a realistic credit limit so the balance can be paid in full each month. Your teen will also see the impact of interest rates and annual fees. Be a good financial role model. Pay your own bills on time and ask your teen to be part of the process. Talk to your teen about the importance of a good credit score and how to maintain it – for example, paying your bills on time accounts for 35 percent of your score. Help them understand lower credit scores mean higher interest that could cost thousands of unnecessary dollars.

Want Peace of Mind:
Protect Your Assets
by Hillel L. Presser
Litigation is America’s fastest growing business because plaintiffs have everything to gain and nothing but a few hours’ time to lose, says Hillel Presser, author of “Financial Self-Defense (Revised Edition),.” “Even if a case seems utterly ridiculous -- like the man who struck and killed a teenager with his luxury car and then sued the boy’s family for damage to his bumper -- defendants are encouraged to settle. It’s sometimes the only way to avoid potentially astronomical legal fees,” he says. If you haven’t already taken steps to protect your assets, that’s one New Year’s resolution you’ll be glad you made and followed up on, Presser says. And while it helps to have the assistance of a lawyer who specializes in asset protection, there are many things you can do yourself. “You shouldn’t have any non-exempt assets in your name,” Presser says. “The goal is to ‘own’ nothing but control everything.” Presser suggests these resolutions for safeguarding your wealth in the event of a lawsuit: • Inventory your wealth. Figure out how much assets you really have (most people have more than they think). Take stock of valuable domain names, telephone numbers, intellectual property, potential inheritances, and other liquid and non-liquid assets. That way you can then work on actions to cost effectively keep them safe. • Set your goal. Setting your 2013 asset protection goal is your first step to becoming protected in the New Year! For instance, you could plan to execute an estate plan or set up a trust for your children in 2013. Decide what assets you want to protect in the New Year and a realistic timeline for implementation. Then -- and most importantly -- stick to your plan. Asset protection works only if you follow through. 44 FOCUS of New York 2014
• Protect your home. Find out how much of your home is protected by your state’s homestead laws and then encumber the remaining equity. Encumbering a home’s equity can be accomplished by recording a mortgage against it, re-financing a current mortgage or even taking out a lien of credit using your home as collateral! Another great strategy to protect your home is to transfer its title to a protective entity such as a limited liability company (LLC), trust, limited partnership, etc. • Get everything out of your name. The worst thing you can do as far as exposure is titling all of your assets to your personal name. That doesn’t mean you have to lose control of them – the goal of asset protection is to “own nothing, but control everything.” In 2013, work on moving your assets out of your personal name and into the name of protective entities such as limited liability companies (LLC’s), trusts, limited partnerships, etc. • Buy adequate insurance. Protect your loved ones. Make sure you have adequate insurance coverage in the event a job loss, natural disaster, or even a tragic loss of life. Those include -- but are not limited to -your car, home, and other valuables.

The all-new C-Class heralds a new chapter in the Mercedes- Benz success story and sets new standards in the premium midrange class. Thanks to an intelligent lightweight design concept boasting weight savings of up to 220 lbs, excellent aerodynamics and new, economical engines, the C-Class establishes new benchmarks in its class. A host of new assistance systems offer safety of the highest standard, while a new suspension, optionally air-sprung, provides for exemplary ride and driving comfort as well as nimble and agile handling. In terms of appearance the new C-Class adopts a progressive approach with its clear yet emotional design and its highclass interior. Many other innovations and interior touches underscore the sedan's luxurious comfort and refined sportiness. In all, the perceived quality of the new C-Class feels like an "upgrade to a higher class of travel." The C-Class is the top-selling model series from Mercedes-Benz. Sales of the preceding model, which was launched in 2007, total over 2.4 million. The new C-Class offers sensuous and clear design and a host of technical innovations as well as a comprehensive scope of standard equipment and exemplary emission and fuel consumption values. The U.S. market launches with two C-Class models: C300 4MATIC with a 2.0L turbocharged direct-injection in-line fourcylinder engine with preliminary power figures of 235 hp and 273 lb-ft of torque and a C400 4MATIC with a 3.0L turbocharged direct-injection V6 at 329 hp and 354 lb-ft of torque. 46 FOCUS of New York 2014
"Mercedes at its best - that's the new CClass, which sets new standards for the mid-range segment on many fronts," says Prof. Dr Thomas Weber, Member of the Board of Management of Daimler AG responsible for Group Research and Mercedes-Benz Cars Development. "It is characterized by an emotional yet clear design which is continued in the high-quality and modern interior. Its efficient and high-performance engineering provides the basis for a high standard of driving enjoyment." Ola Källenius, Executive Vice President, Sales and Marketing Mercedes-Benz Cars, adds: "The new C-Class embodies Mercedes-Benz's claim ‘The best or nothing' in uncompromising style. This is immediately apparent when encountering our new Saloon for the first time, as it creates the impression that one is sitting in a higher class of automobile. I am sure that our customers will be delighted by the high-class appeal and agility of the new C-Class." The C-Class has grown to take account of people's increasing average height. With a 3 inch increase in the wheelbase (112 inches) compared with the previous model, the vehicle is 3.7 inches longer (184 inches) and 1.6 inches wider (71 inches). The resultant additional space benefits first and foremost the rear passengers, who now travel in even greater comfort. The new C-Class also increases its trunk capacity to 17 cubic feet.
On a visual level, the new C-Class represents a bold departure from its predecessor. Its striking, dynamic design exudes sensuous clarity and arouses emotions. Nature was a source of inspiration for the new sedan's aesthetically sensuous lines and surfaces, whose harmony and dynamism create an immediate effect. The designers have created minimalist, purist forms for the C-Class which emphasizes its intelligent technology and engineering. The clearly defined surfaces deliberately display a degree of tension, lending them a muscular and sensuous character. Precise lines and sculptural surfaces create lively light and shade effects. The Mercedes-Benz designers have styled the interior on a level which is rarely encountered even in higher vehicle categories. This applies to the carefully chosen high-class materials and their pleasant touch and feel as well as the precision of the finely crafted details. The interior also embodies a new design idiom which combines sensuousness and clarity perfectly with dynamic sportiness and contributes to the quality feel of the interior. The interior design demonstrates a bold new approach by Mercedes-Benz. Here the designers combine in accomplished style the architecture of Mercedes- Benz sports cars with a totally new center console featuring flowing lines. A large one-piece center console panel performs an elegant sweep from the center air vents to the armrest. These seamless clear-cut lines create a sense of open space and convey a thrillingly purist and modern feel.
As Gorden Wagener, Vice President Design Daimler AG, notes: "The new CClass showcases automotive passion by way of a contemporary design idiom. Progressive and emotional highlights underscore the ground-breaking design style of the new C-Class and demonstrate sensual clarity. The new C-Class interprets modern luxury on a new level."
The suspension on the new C-Class is a totally new development. It provides for nimble and agile handling that makes driving a great pleasure on winding roads while also offering the highest standard of ride comfort in the segment. An optimized multi-link independent rear suspension with 5-link concept ensures unsurpassed wheel location qualities and supreme straight-line stability.
Even though many driver's and passenger’s may not consciously notice NVH (noise, vibration, harshness), Mercedes-Benz has devoted painstaking attention to optimizing the noise characteristics of the interior; including the blower, power windows, seat adjustment functions and many other actuation and operating noises.
Alternatively, the new C-Class is the first vehicle in its segment that can be fitted with an air suspension (AIRMATIC) on the front and rear axles. Thanks to electronically controlled, continuous variable damping at the front and rear, it offers outstanding road roar and tire vibration characteristics even with the vehicle loaded. The driver can use the AGILITY SELECT switch to choose between the various characteristics: "Comfort", "ECO", "Sport" and "Sport+." The additional "Individual" option enables drivers to configure their vehicle according to their own wishes. AIRMATIC also features all-round self-leveling for optimum ride comfort even when the vehicle is loaded. As a result, the suspension responds more sensitively to steering movements and allows a sporty, agile driving style. Mercedes-Benz has undertaken systematic development and substantial improvements in the new C-Class. This applies in particular to the comfort, performance, efficiency and air of quality; thus contributing to a feel-good atmosphere highlighting the status of this cultivated sedan in duly self-assured style.

hether you want to advance your career or make the change to a new career, it’s up to you to make it happen.
“Sometimes hundreds of professionals are sending resumes for one open position, so you cannot leave things up to chance,” said University of Phoenix School of Business Dean Dr. Bill Berry. “You need to put a solid plan in place that will help you set the right career goals and obtain the skills you need to give you a competitive advantage.”
48 FOCUS of New York 2014
Determine Your Career Goals Think about what you really want to do with your career — and be specific. Ask yourself some questions: •
What are the things that interest you most?
•
What motivates you?
•
In what kind of work environment do you thrive?
•
What kinds of jobs fit these criteria?
If you’re not sure, it can be helpful to take a personal assessment. “Doing so can help you uncover your passions and preferences,” said Dean Berry. “It can help you identify strengths and can help you make an informed decision about your career.”
Identify Skills Gaps There are more than three million job openings in this country, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, yet many companies are finding it difficult to fill those positions. A common reason given for this is that employers can’t find qualified people with the appropriate skills. A survey by University of Phoenix found that many people are recognizing the need to add skills in order to improve their careers: •
89 percent of working Americans believe there is still room for them to grow in their careers, and can point to at least one skill they will need to learn.
•
58 percent who are not currently enrolled in school full-time believe that going back to school would be crucial if they were considering a new career path.
•
36 percent say they need additional education in order to get to the next level of their careers.
“Taking an objective look at the skills you currently have and comparing them to the skills required for the type of job you desire, gives you a clear picture of what it will take to make the job changes you want,” Dean Berry said. •
Start by writing down the skills, knowledge and qualifications you currently have.
•
Next, research the types of jobs you want, and write down the qualifications needed.
•
Compare the two lists, and take notes on the skills you’re currently missing.
“Once you do that, you can make decisions on how you’re going to bridge that skills gap,” said Dean Berry. “At the University, we are seeing working adults pursuing education in order to address their own skills gaps — and it’s helping position them for career growth.”
University of Phoenix’s survey found that having a degree has given those surveyed tangible benefits: •
63 percent of those with bachelor’s degrees or higher believe that their education led to more responsibility.
•
60 percent of those with bachelor’s degrees or higher believe that their education positively affected their ability to get promoted.
•
Those with bachelor’s degrees also say they perceive that their education led to other benefits including receiving raises (58 percent), keeping a job (58 percent) and being given more management opportunities (57 percent).
“For those returning to the classroom after many years, they’ll find that learning tools and platforms have changed significantly,” said Dean Berry. “With online learning and other innovations, the classroom is evolving to mirror the workplace and the skills that employers want.” Online coursework is one way that many adults are achieving their goals while holding down a job and/or raising a family. Fifty-nine percent of those surveyed say they are currently taking such a course, or plan to in the near future. When investigating education opportunities, look into your online options to help you maximize your time and pursue the degree plan that best fits your needs. “The bottom line is that you have to take charge of your career,” said Dean Berry. “With a good plan and clear goals in place, you can make yourself more marketable and put yourself on the path to a more fulfilling and rewarding career.”
Top 10 Skills You Need According to research by Apollo Group, parent company of University of Phoenix, successful workers in the 21st century need certain skills. Here’s what employers are looking for — and how you can get them through education:
Leadership — Being a great employee is different than being a great leader. Look for coursework that emphasizes leadership skills and enables you to lead teams. Critical thinking — Take coursework that offers an opportunity to engage in self-directed, project-based and applied learning.
Photos courtesy of Getty Images
Communication — Learn in an environment that requires participation in many modes of communication. Collaboration — Choose courses that are collaborative and also measure success by team results. Productivity and accountability — Develop an organization and com munication system that accounts for short-term and long-term projects. Adaptability — Take advantage of flexible course schedules and learning platforms in order to work, raise a family, volunteer and learn. Innovation — Seek out learning environments that build technology and media fluency.
Bridge the Gaps If you have a skills gap in one area, such as knowledge of current computer software, you can take a single course or seminar to catch up. But for many, getting or finishing a college degree is the key to making a positive career change.
Accessing, analyzing and synthesizing information — Seek out a market-driven curriculum focused on real workplace issues to help you think about how to interconnect. Entrepreneurialism — Improve your problem-solving abilities with class projects and case studies that tackle issues and require analysis and strategic planning. Global citizenship — Learn in a diverse classroom to build crosscultural understanding.

s more Americans make strides towards responsible spending and debt management, there are still ways to improve the control of family finances.

According to a survey recently conducted by Bank of America, less than half of cardholders always pay their entire credit card balance. With more than half of individuals carrying credit card debt, Jason Gaughan, card products executive for Bank of America, said to think about personal spending before taking on a credit card. “Credit cards provide consumers an efficient and protected way to make purchases,” said Gaughan. “They are more convenient than cash and they are incredibly useful in an emergency. The key to successfully managing your credit card account is to understand your budget and stick to a plan that works for you when borrowing. You want a card with a rewards program that fits your lifestyle and how you manage your finances. If you typically carry a balance, look for a card that has low interest and reinforces good payment practices.” Along with these practices, there are other ways to promote good spending and personal finance habits, such as: Limit Number of Credit Cards Limiting the number of cards you own can help limit your spending and increase the likelihood you can pay above the minimum balance. Before you start cutting up your plastic, remember having more than one credit card can have merits. One idea is to have three cards: one in a safe place at home for emergencies and two with you at all times. Reap the Rewards Use the rewards programs available to credit card holders to cash in on things your family really needs. Some cards, such as the BankAmericard Cash Rewards credit card, let you earn more cash back where you spend the most money, like gas stations and grocery stores. The BankAmericard Better Balance Rewards credit card helps customers responsibly manage their credit card balance. Whatever rewards you are seeking, there is likely to be a card suitable for you. Evaluate All Debts Many carry debts beyond credit cards, including student loans, car payments and mortgages. Evaluate your debts and decide which ones have the highest interest rates. Making it a priority to pay down these debts first will save you more money in the long run. Create a Budget It’s never too soon to put yourself in control of your money and stop letting it control you. A budget will give you financial peace of mind and it can help you stretch the income you have. Calculate your income and expenses and set your monthly budget. Though you may not be on-point every month, the simple act of tracking your spending will be a huge step forward in your quest towards responsible spending.

Writing! Get it in
By Ginny Grimsley
“Age 85 is a bad time to go broke,” says expert retirement planner Jeff Gorton. Personal savings, various investments and, yes, Social Security may prove to be short of what you’d expected. “Budgeting how you spend money before retirement can often be a misleading measurement of how you’ll actually spend it during retirement,” says Gorton, a veteran Certified Public Accountant and Certified Financial Planner™, and head of Gorton Financial Group. “Spending 40 hours a week at work not only earns you a paycheck, it also keeps you from spending money on more vacations, matinee screenings at the movie theater, extra trips to the mall or shopping online. You need to be exceedingly realistic in your planning, and the five years before retirement are actually the most crucial in solidifying post-employment stability.” To prevent a rude awakening during retirement, Gorton makes certain his clients start with a written income plan (WIP). He reviews the benefits and importance of this “living document”: • A comprehensive list of life expenses paints a clearer picture. For a 65-year-old married couple today, there is a 72 percent chance that at least one spouse will live to age 85; a 45 percent chance that one will live to age 90, and an 18 percent chance that one will reach age 95, according a recent study from the CDC National Center for Health Statistics. You may not think of listing things like pet care, yard maintenance, and regular visits to salons or spas. But if you enjoy those services now, you may want them during retirement, and you might find that you underestimated the real cost of maintaining your desired lifestyle. And, that’s not including gifts to children and grandchildren!
• The forecast of a two-legged stool. A WIP helps you appreciate the reliability of retirement income. What sources of income do you anticipate having? Traditionally, retirement funding has been viewed as a “three-legged stool,” implying a balance between Social Security, retirement plans and savings/investments. As the baby boom generation ages, Social Security benefits may decrease — and the age at which an individual can collect benefits may increase. Changes in employment may affect retirement plans. As a result, the third leg of the stool, savings/investments, may become even more important. • Who is authoring your WIP? As with all written documents, you must always consider the source. What you may not realize is that a financial planner is liable to have a stake in selling you a financial product. Just like a retailer may have an incentive to move certain brands of products, many planners are incentivized to have you invest in specific financial vehicles from major institutions. What plan works best for you? Seek advice from an expert who isn’t trying to sell you something, such as an independent firm. “If you don’t have a written income plan, then you’re just hoping things will work out,” Gorton says. Jeff Gorton is a Certified Public Accountant and a Certified Financial Planner™ specializing in individual tax and retirement planning. He is also an Investment Advisor Representative under Alphastar Capital Management, an SEC Registered Investment Advisor, and has a life and health insurance license. Gorton works with individuals and their families to create and protect their financial legacies. He specializes in working with retirees in the areas of tax planning, benefits, retirement planning, estate planning and safe money techniques. He received his BBA in Accounting from the University of Oklahoma. Gorton previously worked for 10 years as the Chief Financial Officer for a large retail organization, overseeing their accounting, benefits and 401(k) retirement plans.

The

The imaginative flow of images in the radiant paintings of Michael St. Amand play on the difference between illusion and reality. Each work draws in the viewer with a proliferation of images which become a catalyst for intensely personal dreams and fantasies of the artist. His perplexingly zestful juxtapositions of man and the objects around him, with their shifting scale and dislocations, are replete with unexpected sensations and feelings. The incredible, bewildering forms are not always a snap to identify and challenge our preconceptions and assumptions about the rationalization of reality. The forceful cinematic images in his fragmented compositions reveal themselves gradually, as associations begin to emerge from the kaleidoscopic visual experience. The unpredictable changeability of his vision encompasses the broad spectrum of contemporary culture. His sense of justice and empathy are especially apparent in his enlightened treatment of political and socio-sexual topics. The artist's mastery of incorporating photographs, found objects, and collage into his paintings is matched by his remarkable multilayered bursts of Day-Glow paints and vibrant fluorescent pigments. St. Amand's provocative riddles possess a powerful sense of peripheral vision as he brilliantly meshes disparate forms, from flatly rendered passages to three-dimensional objects and personages depicted in a traditional illusionistic way. The viewer is invited to decipher the content of his primal fantasies which are crammed with allegories of love, anxiety, betrayal, loneliness, and redemption. From the dark recesses of his verdant imagination he paints, free of preconceptions, the ordinary language as well as the soaring poetry of basic signs. These conventional everyday images reveal profound truths of universal time through his method of rotating the point of view in the tradition of Cezanne and the Cubists. Eschewing one-point perspective, he applies layers of primary colors, as well as grays, blacks, and whites. His gestural brushwork, internal structural divisions, and collaged textiles and photographs capture the unique rhythm of modern life and offer a parallel language to our reality. By juxtaposing personal symbols with universal symbols, he achieves a unity in diversity which expresses the paradox and contradiction in a reality which is relative to our degree of understanding. These heavily textured complex compositions are characterized by a plurality of visceral images which integrate to form a whole, distinct universe. 52 FOCUS of New York 2014
St. Amand's bounty of images, styles, and themes manage to straddle the line between the literal and the abstract. His canvases simultaneously contain sections that are on the one hand noisy and dense and others that are mute and mysterious. Rapid passages of painterly brushwork are set alongside of languid sections of controlled exactitude. He possesses an uncanny ability to create visual oppositions which range from visual buoyancy to dead weight, alternately rendered in three-dimensional deep perspective or flat shallow space. His obsessive iconographical elements run the gamut from the timeless and spaceless to the decisive and spontaneous. One key recurring image is the black silhouette of a gesturing man in a coat and trousers. The dark figure contrasts to the wide chromatic scale of his various surroundings, reminiscent of Rene Magritte's familiar man in a bowler hat. The stenciled numbers bring to mind Jasper Johns, while the framing divisions recall the fragmented spaces of James Rosenquist. Although money, especially the once almighty U.S. dollar bill, figures in many of St. Amand's paintings, his work is refreshingly free of the blatant celebration of consumerism in the art of Andy Warhol, Robert Rauschenberg, and Jasper Johns. Other oft repeated images include: missiles, space ships, and rockets as well as outdated simpler mechanical devices; tufts of orchids; endangered species such as the elephant, rhinoceros, leopard, lion, and various insects; indigenous peoples, ballet dancers, photographs of classic painting and sculpture; postage stamps; and various textiles. In all his work, St. Amand puts his unique spin on his modernist and postmodernist sources. His paintings awaken our senses to profound truths concerning our world and our place in it. 1. When images, identifiable forms, even icons in the paintings and constructs are addressed, the viewer will naturally associate what they determine the object to be with their own definition of that object. This results in their own - very personal - reactionary emotion. Whether it is hatred or shock, or passion or compassion, every person will create his or her own truth- now attached to the work. This is what much of my work speaks to: the human condition. How we as humans can interpret an image drastically different from one another depending on a host of influences- being their personal faith or lack-there-of, their personal history, their current situation in life, any number of things can and will influence how they experience the work. What I do, ultimately, is take my own experiences and let them fill up “the tank,” so to speak, and then I expel them by rebuilding what I find to be the truth of the matter, onto the canvas, or into a construct, drawing, or digital piece. I do this to invoke thought, and to inspire analysis. What inevitably transpires can be anything from reactionary rage to euphoric bliss- it’s up to the viewer. For me, on the deepest level, the importance of the work reaches beyond the perceived meaning and lies in the process. The process is at the core, the heart, and is the basic language of the work. From the raw construction of the canvas, to painting the initial base layer- one of what could be 20-30 layers by the time the painting is finished, to living with the work and adjusting and readjusting it until...it just doesn’t hurt anymore: the process is what regularly inspires me. When I can sit in comfort with the piece, I know it’s completed. When it’s completed, I start again. The process never ends. Concerning the world, and the human race, all of us - my work can be used as a tool, as art should be used, to examine the truth of one’s self and the truth of their surroundings. Whether it is a perceived truth or actual truth, which there may or may not be a great difference between the two, the act of self-analysis through the engagement of viewing art is always enlightening. My work is created to do just that. Michael St. Amand

As an ex-playwright-gone-rogue into the world of singer/songwriting, Tracy Thorne always has a story to tell. What sets her apart from any other sweet-voiced musician is her knack for using the stories to connect with even the least likely of listeners. There is a vulnerability in her lyrics and an honesty to her performance that silently, effortlessly and humbly commands the attention of a crowded room. Armed with her guitar and a mischievous smile, Tracy sings as if she’s feeling the words for the first time. “I learned through playwriting that a character, story, performance and even a song should never be static, but always changing, learning, growing. I am drawn to that “aha!” moment where something is realized, gained or even lost,” says Tracy. Influenced by the likes of Joni Mitchell, Fiona Apple, Teddy Thompson and Sara Barielles, Tracy’s pop/country sound is edgy, yet feminine… catchy yet refreshingly laced with unexpected twists and turns. It is in these contradictions that her music thrives. ”The words are headed towards a cliff, right to the edge, and then, a lyrical U-turn. Somehow, these songs make the uncomfortable comfortable.” -Chung Wong, X The Spot. Going on her 7th year as a New Yorker, Tracy is currently recording her first full-length album I Am That with producer/ engineer Will Hensley (album credits include John Mayer, Regina Spektor, Coldplay). You can download the album’s first single “(I am) On a Shelf” here. She hopes to see you at one of her upcoming NYC performances and especially her album release party. 54 FOCUS of New York 2014

riginally from Cape Cod, Sweet landed in Kanab, Utah; a tiny town with only two sets of traffic lights. Though she had this small town to call home, most of her childhood years were spent in transit, gracing the stages of many state fairs across the U.S., filling the occasional support slot while touring with high profile artists including Paul Simon, or singing the National Anthem in front of thousands at the odd Los Angeles Lakers basketball game. Naming Annie Lennox as one of her main influences, Sirens idles comfortably between the quirkiness of Sia, the innocence of Lykke Li, and the dance ready energy of Metric. The EP has been a long time in the making, with the singer/songwriter confessing that she has been building the foundations for the tracks since 2008. “I heard beautiful ambient electronic synths and pads, combined with big beats to fill in the low end. I wanted it to feel warm, and like the music surrounded you." Sirens takes off with the low and heavy dance track, “Ashes of My Paradise.” Sweet’s voice adds a subtle touch of intensity to the minimalistic drops of bass that encompass the song. As she breathes over the infectious synths and leads us into a fast paced chorus, there is an encompassing darkness hidden in the lyrics that is hard to ignore. “I lost both of my parents to cancer during the making of this new record - my mother in December of 2011, and my father in June of 2012. I was 23 years old and I felt I stood amongst the ash of the dreams of my life. But like a phoenix, I can rise again.” Despite the powerful entrance she makes on the EP, Sweet breaks herself down and offers herself up like an innocent lamb in the unabashed ballad, “My Amazing Grace.” A tender portrayal of her experiences in love, Sweet confesses, “I am yours and yours alone,” over a vintage hook reminiscent of a Depeche Mode track. She speaks of a creeping lion, which Sweet admits, “represents my own fear and getting lost in everything I was afraid of”. Never one to go quietly, Sweet regains courage once more in the chorus, which to her, signifies the moment in love when “all your fears fall away, and everything is right.” The EP’s title track concludes the collection perfectly, with the infectious chorus capturing Sweet’s optimism and strength as an artist. The song tells of guilt, and the all too familiar alarm bells that sound when we experience the emotion. But the aptly titled “Sirens” represents Sweet’s true release, and her way of breaking free. “Sometimes, things in the past can hold you hostage, like you’re trapped behind the bars of your mind... But this EP is the first release of my new sound. Sirens represents, in that case, ‘watch out, here it comes!’” You have been warned...

"My dad was the lead singer in a gospel band," says Dirrty Records Founder/Filmmaker Lunden De'Leon. "The first time I saw him on stage I knew I wanted to be a part of the music industry."
I did not know what the future held but I was determined to turn my stumbling blocks into stepping stones." Lunden soon found a roommate that changed her life forever. " I tagged along to a modeling audition with my roommate. I wasn't interested in modeling or acting but when you're hungry and penniless you'll try anything to put food on the table. I got the audition. That same day I was signed to a one year modeling contract." Fans recall first being introduced to Lunden as Joanne Mbutu on the hit television series Vital Signs. Years later, she catapulted that breakout role into a successful career with quite an impressive track-record by creating a number of unforgettable performances and starring in over fifty movies and television shows like the 20th Century Fox Movie The Ladies Room, Surviving Paradise, Fury, Faux-Pas, Cryptz, the HBO award-winning film Kickin Chicken and the NBC hit comedy "Just Shoot Me." Lunden was soon voted by The Ave Magazine as "One of the Most Significant Women in Entertainment" alongside Halle Berry, Beyonce, Oprah Winfrey and many more. In fall 2003, Lunden opened the doors to her Los Angeles based record label Dirrty Records making headlines around the world for releasing a punk remake of Jimi Hendrix's classic Purple Haze. Lunden was soon inducted into the Caribbean Hall of Fame alongside such legends as Bob Marley and Sidney Poitier. Known for her compassion, confidence and inspirational achievements, Former Los Angeles Mayor James K. Hahn issued a special proclamation declaring February 7th as "Lunden De'Leon Day" in the City of Los Angeles. Lunden recently ran for Councilwoman in her home state of South Carolina. Her film production company, Palmetto Film Studios, makes and distributes 5-7 films a year."I moved my record company to South Carolina and started a film production company to give back to my community," says Lunden. " I'm blessed and believe in blessing others."
Born in Barbados, while in high school, Lunden found a fry flipping job at Burger King and when the time was right, she hitched a ride to Hollywood with only $200 in her pocket. "I was homeless for a short period of time in Los Angeles," says Lunden." 58 FOCUS of New York 2014

What’s the funniest thing that has ever happened to you?
When I was 18, I flew back to my homeland, the President of Romania came at a show I was on and wanted to take a picture with me but I had no idea who he was! I asked his head security after the picture was taken why everyone was making such a big deal about it?! He patted me on the back and said “That was a good joke!” The next day, our picture was all over newspapers, on the front page. Good thing I smiled for the camera!

Speaking with
Carmen Corcoz
By Terry Profetto
Romanian born singer, songwriter inspires many with her lyrics. A soulful mixture of rhythm & pop, Carmen creates music with her heart of gold. Understanding why music is such a wonderful influence not only to her, but to all of us. How did you get started?
Music has always been a part of me. I started fully pursuing music two years ago, but I feel like my whole life music had such a big role in everything I did/felt. As a child, I wrote poems and got some published at the age of 13. I fell in love with the idea of expressing in poetic ways, soon after I was writing songs and developing artistically. I remember having a plastic karaoke machine I would sing on in my room and record myself on daily, it brought me so much joy. I always knew that it was one of my dreams that I had to make come true. And so I did. After College, I decided to work on making an EP. I wanted to do something different, something that would impact people with my music and lyrics. I affiliated myself with SickKids Foundation and donated proceeds from song downloads to the Sick Children at the Toronto Hospital. I called the EP “Inspired”. It was the beginning of something special in my music career because I sang/wrote for a good cause.
What brings Carmen joy/inspiration?
I really enjoy talking to people and hearing their stories of life, it’s so interesting to me. I get inspired sometimes by different things that represent a meaning to what I feel. Puppies also bring me joy, and chocolate! 60 FOCUS of New York 2014

When you’re not performing what outfits makes you comfortable?
When I am not dressing all glamorous, I love wearing FERKNOT, I love good quality dress shirts with jeans or shorts. I love shopping at Brooks Brothers also, they have amazing stuff!
Your fans have a lot of love for you, is there a little secret you would like to share with them?
I am blessed to have a lot of devoted fans that have been there from day one. I cannot express how excited I am to showcase my new music to them. This month they should watch out for my New Music Video!
How does your schedule look for 2013 into 2014?
2013 is all about working on new music. I will be doing a few appearances but 2014 will be the year to watch out for a tour and more live performances!
What does the future hold for Carmen Corcoz?
I always live in today and cherish every moment. If I were to look at my future for a few seconds, I could say it looks bright, successful and filled with happiness. A day isn’t complete without a real smile inside and out! Keeping a positive attitude is always important in determining what’s to come next.

Easy Care for Natural Stone Stone countertops and floors, such as granite, marble and other natural stone, have long been loved for the sophisticated and luxurious appearance they add to kitchens and bathrooms. A natural product made by the Earth, natural stone counters and floors come in an endless range of colors accented with unique veins, swirls and crystals. The advantages of stone go beyond just its beautiful appearance and the investment in improving a home’s value. Natural stone is resistant to scratching, more sanitary than other surfaces, durable, and easy to maintain. But easy does not mean maintenance-free. There are steps homeowners need to take in order to protect their investment. “Preserving the beauty of natural stone requires proper care and attention,” said Lenny Sciarrino, a third-generation stone-care expert and co-founder of Granite Gold brand stone-care products. “In fact, many ordinary cleaners are harsh and abrasive, which will have damaging effects on natural stone surfaces.”
Family Features
Cleaning, sealing and polishing are the three essential steps required to keep natural stone looking as beautiful as the day it was installed.
Clean often. Even if your surface appears clean, it should be cleaned daily and after every meal preparation. Avoid common cleaners and abrasives, which can break down the protective seal. The result could be costly repairs or even replacement. It’s also important to use a cleaner, such as Granite Gold Daily Cleaner, that is pH balanced, non-toxic, biodegradable and safe for use on all food-preparation surfaces. Check the integrity of the seal. There is a common misperception that natural stone surfaces can be damaged by too much sealing. However, frequent sealing maintains maximum surface protection, which provides superior, long-lasting resistance to staining, etching and soil build-up. Check the integrity of the seal of your granite with an at-home water test. Pour enough water on your stone to create a circle 3 inches in diameter then repeat in several different locations. Let the water sit for 30 minutes before wiping it away and checking for any dark marks or rings. These indicate the water is penetrating the stone and it’s time to reseal. Polish regularly. Polishing your stone after cleaning brings out its natural beauty and reinforces the protective seal, which provides ongoing protection against water spots and fingerprints. Polishing is particularly important on stone shower walls and tub surrounds to help prevent soap scum build-up. Polishing stone floors is not recommended as it will make the walking surface slick and dangerous. If you have questions about granite cleaning or the care and maintenance of any other natural stone counters, floors and other surfaces, ask the experts at Granite Gold: StoneCareExperts@GraniteGold.com

Technology
Take a Break from
As access to technology increases, families may find they are spending more time on their devices and less time together. Some psychologists worry our growing attachment to technology may result in social isolation. “We’re getting used to a new way of being alone together,” said Sherry Turkle, Massachusetts Institute of Technology professor, psychologist and author of “Alone Together: Why We Expect More from Technology and Less from Each Other.” “People want to be with each other, but also elsewhere, connected to all the different places they want to be.” In her book, “Alone Together: Why We Expect More from Technology and Less from Each Other,” Turkle explores the idea that this constant need for virtual connection is leading to a gap in communication between families, and a new generation of children is unable to actually communicate and relate to their peers or parents. Ready for a Tech Timeout? Foresters™, a life insurance provider committed to the well-being of families, recently launched the Tech Timeout™ challenge in response to a growing awareness that our attachment to digital devices may contribute to a sense of social isolation among families. Tech Timeout encourages families across North America to take a pledge to turn off their digital devices (including TVs, smartphones, video games and computers) for an hour each day for one week and connect with each other in a more meaningful way. The idea is not to eliminate technology, but to create awareness of the dependence on technology, and ultimately improve personal bonds within families.

Easy Ways to Unplug Carving out space and time for each other can start the channels of communication flowing. Here are some activities families can do together: • Board Game Bonanza – Break out the cards, puzzles and board games for a night of old-fashioned fun. • Get Out and Play – Find a local trail and set out on a hike together. You will have a chance to interact with your surroundings and one another and be active too. • Volunteer – Volunteering can help strengthen community connections and avoid a sense of social isolation. Find a cause your family is passionate about and volunteer with a local organization. • Cook Together – Dig out your favorite recipes and try cooking as a family. Assign each person a role in meal preparation. You will not only have plenty of time to interact, your children can pick up some valuable life skills along the way. • Take a Tech-free Holiday – Family vacations are a great time to recharge and bond with your kids, but connecting can be tough if you are each plugged into your electronic devices. Fun time together will create memories your children will cherish for years to come. • Rediscover Reading – Begin a family reading hour or book club. Starting a discussion about literature will open up communication. Follow the “SAFETY” Checklist from Trusted HGTV Contractor Mike Holmes Family Features
eeping a healthy home for your family means more than daily chores and the occasional deep cleaning. It’s important to add routine inspections of often overlooked areas and regular maintenance to your list of tasks. “Every home can have unhealthy, harmful, or even hazardous areas,” said Mike Holmes, renowned contractor on HGTV and healthy home expert. “It’s important to check them out, especially during regular maintenance. Addressing these ‘hidden hazards’ helps create a healthy home and keeps your family safe.” Holmes recommends following his “SAFETY” checklist to ensure your home is safer and healthier for your family.
S Seek out lead in the home.
If your home was built before 1978, it could contain lead. Your family could be exposed to it through the air, drinking water, contaminated soil, deteriorating paint and dust in and around the house. If you disturb any material that contains lead, tiny lead particles could become airborne at home. Talk to a professional to test the entire house, and take the necessary steps to ensure your family’s safety.
A Address indoor air quality and change your air filter.
According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), indoor air pollution levels can be 2 to 5 times higher than outdoor levels — sometimes even 100 times higher. Your lungs shouldn’t be cleaning the air inside your home. Use an electrostatically charged Filtrete Brand air filter to help capture odors and airborne particles, such as mold spores, dust mite debris, bacteria and viruses. Plus, changing your filter at the start of every season helps protect and maintain your system.
F Fix leaks to prevent mold and mildew.
Mold spores need moisture to grow and thrive in warm, humid conditions. When mold is disturbed, its spores can get into the air you breathe. Inspect your home for excess water and moisture build-up from leaky roofs, faucets, basement drains, dishwashers and wash ing machines, and fix them immediately. Also, reduce your indoor humidity to 30 to 60 percent, and use vents and exhaust fans whenever possible.
E Exercise caution around appliances.
Before using appliances such as space heaters and toaster ovens, make sure they are working properly. Never drape an electrical cord over a sink, as electricity should never come into contact with water or any other liquids. Also avoid overloading wiring or plugging too many appliances into a single wall socket because it can cause electrical sparks, leading to an electrical fire. Be sure to unplug appliances when they’re not being used, and cover sockets with outlet protectors.
T Test for dangerous gases.
One out of every 15 homes in the U.S. has dangerous levels of radon, according to the EPA. You can purchase a short-term home radon test for less than $20. Test the lowest lived-in level of your home, and if you have elevated levels of radon, call a qualified contractor immediately. Make sure they have plenty of experience dealing with radon. Also, test smoke and carbon monoxide detectors every month by pushing the test button on the unit. Remember to change the batteries every season, and replace the entire unit every 7 to 10 years.
Y Yield healthier results with regular upkeep.
Keep up with regular home maintenance to help keep your home healthy and your family safe. Fix small problems now to avoid big repairs later. Remember, big repairs come with big price tags and can lead to unhealthy and unsafe living conditions.

You may find that choosing a quality window is difficult because of the overwhelming number of options. A solid warranty offered by a quality manufacturer as well as your budget should be important factors in the window decision you make. Windows are a large investment and if you pick wisely you can save money over the long run by improving your energy efficiency. In order to save money in the future you may be wise to spend a little more on your windows now.. Quality doors add to the curb appeal of a home and also enhance your home's security. Block the noise outside from entering your home with a well built door which will provide a sound barrier. Energy efficiency is the most important door feature to have. Breaking a door by force in order to enter your home is more difficult when you have well built security plates in your door. When installing doors and windows in your house don't forget to factor in window coverings into the price. New technology has improved the quality of shutters and blinds now available. The decision of using a shutter or blind will come down to personal preference because there are so many benefits to both. Blinds are sometimes preferred because of the flexibility they offer for installation and the variety of colors and types you can choose from. Common types of blinds include roman, roller, sheers, pleated shades or cellular shades. The fact that shutters offer home owners privacy, durability and versatility are key benefits. Shutters are designed to allow you to control the amount of privacy and light in your home. The features of light and privacy control offered by shutters makes them a popular choice. Shutters don't shrink, fade, peel or crack, which makes them a great investment for home owners. Shutters can be cleaned easily, making them a popular choice. The ability to easily remove shutters that have a hinge-release panel makes cleaning them very accessible. Whether you want to install shutters inside the window frame or not is up to you. If you find a reliable manufacturer they will usually offer a solid warranty, perhaps even up to 25 years. The quality, type or size of window coverings you choose will impact the price.

10 Solutions for Home Organization
Everyone wants to start the year off well-organized. January is around the corner and time for the obligatory New Year’s Resolutions. If one of yours is to get your home organized, the home organization specialists at Tailored Living offer these 10 solutions to help you maximize your space and reduce clutter 1. Murphy Beds Ideal for lofts, studios or multifunction rooms, murphy beds provide a convenient solution to creating more open space and organizing a room. Murphy beds can be effortlessly pulled down from their wall units at bedtime and be raised and concealed in the mornings to open up a room. 2. Under Bed Storage Remove large storage furniture like armoires and dressers and opt instead for a platform bed and add rolling under-bed storage drawers that can hold clothes and other belongings.
3. Vertical shelving Bathrooms and closets have notoriously underutilized vertical spaces. Customized vertical shelving can allow placement of bins and baskets to provide easy access to items and free up prime horizontal space. Place everyday items at eye-level, and less used items on the upper shelves, such as guest towels and bulk soap packages. 68 FOCUS of New York 2014
4. Clothing Valets Especially useful in narrow closets, clothing valets allow several garments to be hung at once while consuming minimal real estate on walls that cannot accommodate a standard hanging rod. Short on wall space? Closet valets also work well on doors. There are various options available like wall mount valets and retractable valets. 5. Electronics Shelving Large electronics such as printers, fax machines, and speakers can eat up valuable real estate in small offices. Move everything possible to wall storage. When installed professionally, mounted shelving can hold a surprising amount of weight. Start the lowest shelf 20 inches above the desk surface so items you use often are within easy reach while working. 6. Pull-out Bins Many an item has been lost in the dark abyss of deep shelves or drawers. Pull-out bins allow maximum use of storage space while maintaining the ability to bring all stored items into view when needed. Ideal for small snack items in pantries or small toys in children’s closets, pull-out bins help keep pile-prone items more organized.

7. Under Desk Cabinets Small dorm or office spaces can be difficult to organize. Make your job easier with under desk cabinets. These smaller sized cabinets neatly tuck in under a desk to take advantage of the extra space found there. They also come with wheels for easy maneuvering. Use them to store school supplies, files and other appropriate articles. 8. Shoe Cubbies Shoes can create a lot of clutter and can sometimes be hard to find. Space-saving shoe cubbies solve both problems by gathering your shoe collection in a centralized location and displaying them in easy to access slots. Shoe cubbies are versatile, being able to accommodate athletic shoes or boots, and are small enough to place either in the closet or entryway. 9. Ceiling Storage Garage ceilings are vastly underused storage spaces, perfect for sports equipment or seasonal items. A bike hoist stores bikes off the ground utilizing a pulley system that maintains easy access for everyday use. Overhead storage safely holds boxes for less frequently used items like holiday decorations. 10. Pull-out Canvas Hamper There are few things that produce more clutter than scattered clothing. An easy fix is a drawer with a pull-out canvas hamper that can be used to store dirty clothes until it’s time to do laundry. Drawers can be neatly tucked away in closets and pull-out hampers have two handles that allow you to easily carry your clothes to the laundry room.

Today’s newly remodeled kitchens boast more than just rich hues and shiny appliances – they have an eco-conscious ambiance that marries great style with respect for the environment. Dreaming of a fresh, modern kitchen that is also eco-friendly and strikingly beautiful? Achieving this transformation is more attainable than you may think. Environmental lifestyle expert, Danny Seo, provides these helpful tips on how to add earth-friendly updates to your kitchen: Refrigerator When searching for a new refrigerator, be sure to look for more than just the Energy Star label to ensure maximum energy efficiency. It is also important the new appliance fits your needs and the size of your kitchen. A larger refrigerator uses more energy. If the one you select is too big for your needs, you will be wasting energy and money.
windows make up the materials in glass tile; old plates and clay vases are recycled to become ceramic tile; and those old soda cans become aluminum metal tile. All of these materials come in a variety of shades and styles to fit the look of your dream kitchen. Adding in a new laminate countertop, such as those made by Wilsonart, will complete the look when combined with a beautiful new backsplash. Wilsonart Decorative Metals are a great option. Dishwasher According to the Environmental Protection Agency, using an Energy Star labeled dishwasher is the most efficient use of energy and water, even more so than hand washing. When looking to update your dishwasher, pay close attention to the Energy Guide labels, which include the annual estimated costs to run them. This valuable information can help you compare models to find the best fit for your family’s needs.
Blocked wood countertops With their rugged durability and timeless style, butcher block countertops are making a huge comeback. Though typically made from cherry, walnut and oak, greener options, such as high pressure laminate designs made by Wilsonart, can contribute to US Green Building Council LEED accreditation as an eco-friendly material to use in your home. Flooring For a more sustainable approach to kitchen flooring, there are several options available. If you love the hard, classic appeal of wood, look for reclaimed, recycled or sustainably sourced materials. Bamboo is also a beloved choice among ecoconscious remodelers for its biodegradable nature and high renewability. “Going green at home can be overwhelming, so I always advise people to not sweat the small stuff and focus on the one room of the house where it matters the most: the kitchen,” says Seo. “Being kind to the planet in the kitchen can also be kind on your wallet over time, so it's worth it to invest in sustainable upgrades.”
A dream kitchen that is both eco-friendly and chic is easier to attain than you think. With a few changes not only will you be smiling, but so too will Mother Earth.

Sweet Dreams by Daniel Fernandez
Down is nature’s best insulator and offers the sleep inducing benefits of warmth without weight. The wonderful softness of down and feather pillows feels great and is good for you because it conforms to the body more naturally than many synthetic fibers or foam pillows. This quality has led to the increase in non-traditional pillow shapes for specific types of sleepers—such as those who sleep be st with a large pillow they can “hug”, or the pillows designed for expectant mothers. In a more traditional bed pillow, the neck and shoulder muscles are less strained as the head is naturally cradled in the down and feather pillow. Down and feather is a natural material that wicks moisture away and allows it to quickly evaporate rather than trapping moisture. Waking up in the night having to throw off a blanket because of feeling overheated is a thing of the past when your pillow and comforter are made from down and feather. Dust mite allergies plague at least 10 percent of the population and are a leading contributor to developing asthma. Hypoallergenic down and feather is a good product for allergy sufferers because the natural breathability means that moisture– which dust mites need to live and thrive–is not trapped in the fibers. Additionally, the fabrics that encase the down and feathers are tightly woven–possessing a high thread count–in order to keep any feathers from escaping. This tightly woven fabric also serves as a barrier to dust mites. According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), insufficient sleep is a public health epidemic in the U.S. Further, the CDC says that a lack of sleep makes a person more likely to suffer from other chronic diseases such as diabetes, depression and obesity. How can people help create better sleep habits and lead healthier lives? The first step is to realize what is keeping them awake. Feeling too hot or too cold? Restless and sore from fidgeting while sleeping? These seemingly trivial discomforts can have adverse effects on sleep and health. Use these tips from the American Down and Feather Council (ADFC) to pick out the right bedding for a night of deep and refreshing sleep.
• Waking up Shivering or Sweating? Down is nature’s best insulator and offers the sleep inducing benefits of warmth without weight. A down comforter with a fill power higher than 500 will give added warmth, and a down comforter with less than 500 will keep you snug but cool. • Fidgeting in your Sleep? Look for bedding that is soft and will naturally conform to your body – like down and feather. Down and feather contours and moves with your body as you shift positions, this will keep you from getting tangled up in your sleep. • Feeling Dirty and Gross? Easily washable, down and feather products are made from natural materials that wick moisture away and allow it to quickly evaporate rather than trapping it close to your body. Sleeping in a moisture-free bed will help you retain a fresh and clean feeling. • Suffering from Allergies? Plaguing at least 10 percent of the population, dust mites thrive in humid locations and are one of the leading contributors to asthma. Superior construction and breathable materials allow down and feather products to be dust mite free and hypoallergenic. FOCUS of New York 2014 71
Seeing Back-to-School Success
By Dr. Joseph Barr
Joseph Barr, O.D., M.S., serves as VP of Medical Affairs Pharmaceuticals & Vision Care at Bausch + Lomb
As students begin preparing for the upcoming school year, parents are sometimes quick to overlook a very important back-to-school checklist item: an eye examination. Gone are the days where students passively listen to lectures and take notes. Today’s schools rely more and more on visual teaching methods, like using laptops and tablets. In fact, 80 percent of classroom learning is based on vision, according to the American Optometric Association. To help ensure vision problems don’t interfere with your student’s performance, there are a few insights all parents should know to better serve their children’s vision needs. Be on the lookout for silent symptoms Children often try to compensate for poor vision, so parents should be on the lookout for the following symptoms of vision problems: • Reading patterns, like frequently losing his or her place while reading, could indicate an astigmatism, a common vision problem that causes objects to appear distorted and blurry. • Frequent headaches can be a result of the child attempting to compensate for blurry vision, which is often a sign of farsightedness. • Head tilting can be a sign of an eye muscle imbalance or strabismus, a condition in which the eyes are not properly aligned with each other.
Provide your child with “Smart-Sight” If your child does have a vision impairment, contact lenses can be a good option for students. Over the past several years, the technology and comfort behind contact lenses has improved, along with their affordability. For instance, Bausch + Lomb’s SofLens daily disposables are designed to be worn for one day, and then thrown away. This means there is no need for nightly cleaning, no concerns about losing a lens and students can also keep a spare pair in their backpack, if needed. With eyesight being such an important component of education, it’s important to monitor your child’s vision throughout the school year. If you believe your child may be experiencing any of these symptoms, it’s best to call your local eye care doctor to schedule a routine eye examination.

Anna Dudzinska
Anna Dudzinska, the fashion mastermind behind Dud-zin-ska, was trained in Poland where she has made a name of her architectural pieces of intricate and sharp designs inspired by her avant guarde approach to knitwear design. The DISTILLATION collection refers to Diane Tuft’s photographs documenting the fragility and the extraordinary ever-changing environment, showing structures and forms which cannot be seen through naked eye. These transitory moments are caught once giving no chance for repetition and prove that nature is not constant. In her works we’ll find a fascination of enormous glaciers, which Diane has photographed for several years. This constantly moving body of dense ice conceals plenty of colors and forms – from transparent water drops shining in the sun to the massive blocks of ice. The collection relates to these forms by combining see-through fabrics with fleshy, hand knitted sweaters with irregular structures. Getting the Right Fit By Kelly Moore and Mary Pifko
Did you know that 85% of women are wearing the wrong size bra? Yes, that’s what I said… 85%! The surge in awareness and increase in bra fittings has proven that 8 out of 10 women are wearing the wrong size bra. The majority of the problem lies in the band being too large. The decrease in band size to accommodate a more snug and proper fit, has increased the width and depth of the cup size women need to achieve their correct size. Case in point, a woman who wears a 36D cup when properly fit would likely fit into a 34DD or 32F size bra. So what’s a woman to do with all of this overwhelming information? How do you know you are wearing the right bra? There is only on way to truly know… and that is to do a proper bra fitting. Mary and I are going to give you the basics… step by step. If doing this on your own makes you uncomfortable there are many great bra fitting experts out there to give you a one on one consultation.
Measurement Guidelines for American Fit: Step 1: Measure your band size: Wearing an unpadded bra, and using a soft tape measure, measure firmly around your ribcage, directly underneath your breasts. The tape measure should be held horizontally around your body and the tape should be taught with no sliding in the back. If the number is un-even round up. This measurement is your under bust or band measurement. Example: 36 = 36 but 37 = 38. Step 2: Measure your cup size: Wearing an unpadded bra, and using a soft tape measure, wrap the tape measure around the fullest area of your bust. Hold taught and keep the tape measure straight. This is your bust measurement. Make a note of this measurement. Subtract the band measurement from the cup measurement to get your cup size. Each inch represents a cup size. Example: less than 1 inch = AA cup, 1 inches = A cup, 2 inches = B cup, 3 inches = C cup and so on. For example: If you have a 36-band size and 42 bust size you are a 36F cup. 42 - 36 = 6. 6 inches is equivalent to an F cup.

Very different than other make-up artists, Cara invests herself completely in every project she does. She organizes a lot of her own shoots and chooses her own models, photographers, hair stylists and sometimes gets others involved too; like designers and retouchers. A socialite at heart, Cara loves networking and creating art with the most talented people in the industry. She has a keen eye for casting, and also acts as the creative director & wardrobe stylist at her photo shoots. Her never-ending energy and inspiring passion is contagious and the word is spreading quickly – she has a multitude of inquiring clients from all over; some within the U.S., like Georgia, and some internationally, like Israel and Brazil. Cara has had a love for makeup since before she even understood it. As a child, Cara would sneak into her mother's room to play with the vast colors and soft brushes that her mother had. Not knowing what was what, she used concealer for lipstick, eye shadow as blush, and so on. When Cara grew up and started working in the Big Apple, she spent a lot of time at Sephora in between waitressing shifts, and learned all that she could about the cosmetics industry. She became friends with the artists and specialists and absorbed all of the information that she could. One day, she was introduced to a DJ by a close friend and was told to "go nuts" with her make-up. A prominent make-up artist in the Times Square Sephora used to use Cara as a demonstration to tourists, and when Cara came in over-joyed about the opportunity to wear some crazy make-up, he introduced her to the world of COLOR and LASHES. For the first time in her life, Cara wore fake eyelashes‌ probably not what you're imagining. I'm talking about hot pink with black feather eyelashes. It was at that moment, and that first look in the mirror, that Cara realized her love for make-up and the vision of transformation, the beauty that lies in the art of make-up. This fabulous make-up artist friend of Cara's did her make-up about 2 more times before he had to move to Hollywood to pursue his own dreams.
FOCUS of New York 2014 95
At this point, Cara was hooked. She loved the colors, the textures, the lashes; all of it. So, she taught herself how to put them on without his help‌ and succeeded. She was inundated with compliments and inquiries every time she posted an image, and received tons of encouragement to be a make-up artist and pursue a career, but at first, she was reluctant. She didn't want something she loved so much to become "work" that she would grow to dislike. A few years down the road, she realized that her love for make-up was the one constant in her life. The one thing that was always unwavering and strong. She woke up one day and simply said to herself: "I'm going to be a make-up artist." ‌and she did just that. acio Photography Photo by Nino Ign

She didn't have a real portfolio, only pictures of herself, which no one would take seriously, so she set up her own Portfolio Photo Shoot with 3 models, a wardrobe stylist, hair dresser, photographer and assistant. From there, she was able to acquire more gigs, which all made her fall more and more in love with the industry. She even got to a point, the summer of 2012, where she was to be a featured make-up artist in a showcase, but had to turn it down due to the unexpected loss of her mother. Because of this loss, Cara took a pretty big hiatus from her make-up career to gather her thoughts and mourn in her own way. Thanks to the continued love and support of her friends and colleagues, Cara returned to doing what she loves. To express art, share beauty, help others see the world in a way that they may not have before. She does it because she loves it, to put something in the world that wasn’t there before, to thrive in her passion, and she really is an inspiration to so many. She is living proof that you can do anything you put your mind to. Cara is quickly becoming a very highly sought after artist and photo shoot organizer. In a world that can be so dull and sad at times, it is refreshing to see some vibrancy and magic, and that is exactly what Cara brings with her unique talent and incredible passion.

Dajana Basic launched her 2013/14 Collection amongst mounting expectation and quiet anticipation. We had been lucky enough to talk to the designer, Dajana, days prior to this event and she candidly let us peep into her creative process and how this collection came alive. Macaroons inspired Dajana into an "off the tired all white" of Bridal Collections and not only did she achieve that but a lot more. The eight dresses presented were strikingly different in the style and construction and at the same time coherent with the theme of the elegance and subtle delicacy of the colors in delicious macaroons. Each design presented not only a different color but also a personal and individual silhouette that highlighted the multilayered construction and the impeccable craftsmanship.

What inspired you to start your fashion line? Whilst finishing my MA dissertation on Vogue Magazine I started working as a personal stylist in London and discovered a gap in the bridal wear industry for very fashionable but affordable bridal gowns. I started researching the market and discovered that with today’s offer on affordable bridal dresses modern brides rather choose to hire a gown for still quite a lot of money (at least £500 per day on average) which they cannot keep for eternity. I felt it was quite a shame having to return something as personal as your own wedding dress which is not as standard as a graduation gown for example or any other uniform. :) So looking at the rage of affordable bridal gowns in London´s leading bridal boutiques (£1700 on average) they all seemed very similar to me and had nothing outstanding really... all mainly white, champagne or off-white, mainly strapless and with a little bit of lace for romantic decoration. Looking at the modern women´s buying behavior as well as today´s economic situation, I felt really driven through my entrepreneurship studies in the fashion industry to try and develop a business proposal in order to bring the bridal wear industry more to the fashionable upper high-street market and offer young fashionable brides their own designer signature identity for an affordable price, under a recognizable bridal wear label. Since childhood I always felt very comfortable in drawing dresses so basically I developed the idea that what my favorite bridal designer Vera Wang represents for the high-end market, inspires me to bring down to a more affordable level with own signature designs and represent strong designer identity for young fashionable brides on the upper high-street - affordable designs under a signature brand identity. :) I believe it is a big step in the bridal wear industry which might lead the industry into a new modern era but on the other hand it is what young fashionable brides desirer... outstanding designs and affordable prices, that is why generally our high-street is booming. :)
FOCUS of New York 2014 103
How is your line different from any other bridal designs? My aim is to design recognizable but affordable bridal gowns for young fashionable brides by adding delicate soft color accents to my white dress designs. The brands identity is all about `away from pure white´ in order to create a very fashionable and elegant new upper high-street bridal wear label for a new generation of modern brides.
Who is the ideal bride to wear your designs? The young professional women with an average to an upper average income who loves fashion, outstanding designs and shopping on the high-street; who likes to combine fashion trends with timeless elegance and the mixture of expensive and inexpensive fashion items and accessories. Dajana Basic London´s brides are very sociable and fun, sophisticated young women who love to enjoy their lives, be happy and feel loved. They like to look their most beautiful every single day, suitable for each occasion. They are looking for an outstanding bridal gown, something different, modern and elegant at the same time that fits their body shape perfectly and does not cost a fortune, something they feel very comfortable and special to wear on their big day.
You studied Law in Germany, what led you to fashion after that? Fashion was always the main industry I was very passionate about, but being still very young when I started Uni in Germany and also being elected youth president of my home town in Germany for 5 years, I had too many commitments and was just not ready back then to move away from home to a fashion capital to follow my passion. Business Law was a course available close to my home town in Germany and seemed like a very save option whilst I was still very engaged in different projects in Germany, and with broad options to change into different industries afterwards. At some point I could not wait any longer to graduate from law school and as I did not see myself as a typical lawyer really, I finally decided to follow my passion into London´s fashion industry to expand my business knowledge and creative skills to study the management and entrepreneurial side of fashion.
What are your preferred fabrics? I absolutely love the key fabrics of romantic feminine lace, soft tulle and organza for all my dress designs.
Are brides normally decided on what they want when they come to you? Do they change their mind after the consultation? Every bride has an idea of her dream wedding dress which always slightly changes or adapts when looking for the perfect gown. My job is to present a range of completely new, easy wearable dress designs of each collection to modern brides which fit the majority of female body shapes and hopefully inspire individual ideas of an outstanding made-to-order designer gown `away from pure white and towards delicate color accents´ and also be able to advise each bride for a more customized gown, perfectly fitted to individual styles and figure.
How is your creative process? All dresses are designed in England and handcrafted by our leading seamstresses in one of our design studios in Shanghai. Each dress will be individually made-to-order, allowing brides to submit their exact professional measurements and then handcrafted specifically to the designers size chart. We tend to craft each dress slightly larger so that it can be taken in and perfectly fitted just prior the wedding to guarantee the absolute perfect and comfortable fit.
104 FOCUS of New York 2014
Do brides or fabrics inspire you first? Designing a whole collection it is the mood of each season and the fashion forecast that inspires me for seasonal colors, fabrics and dress designs. Designing a customized dress it is the actual individual bride I like to get to know first over a consultation that inspires me for her own dress design. There I can look specifically at her personal style, body shape, and favorite color tones to be able to design the perfect customized gown.
Could you say your designs are adaptable to all body shapes? All of our SS 2014 debut gowns are designed to fit the majority of female body shapes. Having each dress handcrafted on a made-toorder base we are able to deliver perfectly fitted gowns by matching exact bridal measurements to our size chart, leaving room for final fittings and take-ins just before the wedding. Designing a customized bridal gown however we advise each bride on the best fit for her personal body shape and create sketches of each customized dress design to show the differences in fit and style.
Do you believe in comfort over fashion? Do you compromise? I personally do not believe there has to be a compromised in either fashion or comfort on a daily base, even though I know that lots of women do compromise. Wearing ready-to-wear fashion on a daily base I personally always ensure to feel very comfortable in my outfits, especially in all my shoes... if I wear heals, they have to be super comfortable; otherwise no matter how lovely they look if the design is not comfortable for me I personally would not purchase a pair. However sometimes there are limits in what designer can achieve. Designing all our bridal gowns we like to ensure to use very light materials, corsage support and figure friendly designs in order to achieve the maximum comfort for each bride. We have to accept though that it is nearly impossible to achieve the same comfort in a long bridal gown as in a light summery dress. All the extra fine material on bridal gowns are not made for practical day-to-day wearing but we can certainly achieve the most possible comfort to walk, dance, eat, drink and move around freely and comfortably on the big day.

Red captures her essence. Throughout decades and diverse cultures, it has long been the ultimate expression of love, emotion and power. And now, her dream wardrobe has arrived in a spectrum of the hue’s most splendid shades, from bright to Bordeaux. The look is bold and authoritative, yet feminine, with an emphasis on high tech materials, luminous embellishments, fur details, shine and luxurious fabrications. Leather rules, done in sheath dresses, soft pants, minimalistic tops and pencil skirts, as well as revamped outerwear. Leather is also important in graphic clutch silhouettes to utility backpacks, while ruby stones with brass hardware can be found on the suede single sole bootie.
Urban Utility
For her, fashion marches to a military beat this fall. Think rescaled, recolored and DIY camouflage. The cargo jacket, vest and pants join the ranks in different styles, from tailored to oversized, along with retro bomber jackets and traditional pea coats. Equipment shirts resurface. Utilitarian chic is redefined, especially when the unexpected elements come into play. Work in surplus boots, backpacks and utility belts.
The Modernist
She believes in new minimalism, a return to innovation with high-tech materials. The palette consists of soft neutrals to bold brights, often combined for sophisticated effects. Track pants add a certain “sport allure” with reinvented sweatshirts. Her style is a reinterpretation of basic silhouettes, but with totally new volumes, color blocking and banding combinations. Suede and leather are no longer statement pieces but the foundation of a complete head-to-toe look.

She is eccentric and mysterious; a “femme fatale” with an eye for eclectic excess inspired by the historical decadence of decades past. Medieval prints to ecclesiastic craft and Gothic inspiration play a big role here. Embellishment becomes positively ornamental with bold cabochon beading on jackets, dresses or skirts. Gold Baroque details and intricate scrolling are now seductive and edgy in a modern way. Velvet, lace and devoré are key here. Needlepoint is no longer a grandmother’s pastime! It’s the new inspiration for the downtown girl.
In Black & White
In her eyes, everything is black or…white! Optional primary accents of color may add a stunning contradiction. You’ll see everything from conversational, landscape, surrealist patterns, photo prints and stylized black and white florals. Bold black and white banding or color blocking and sheer detail come into play as well. There is also a surprising juxtaposition of leather, ciré, velvet and new geometrics. With the “iconic” Pierrot clown as her muse, the mood is romantic, unsuspecting and totally mesmerizing.
The Artist
Her body is a canvas. The curator of her own inimitable style, she artfully fuses graphic, stylized and surrealist patterns as well as Asian influences, artistic collage, dark florals and unusual layering. This trend includes a palette of muted jewel tone sometimes in graduated color ways. Expect lots of shine in jacquard materials, lace as a key fabrication and new knits with textural effects, intarsias and mixed media. The Grandpa cardigan and crew sweater look especially fresh when worn with jacquard silk printed matchstick pants and pencil skirts.

Additionally, a 2010 study in The Journal of Nutrition suggests that Flaxseed may help reduce belly fat. Dr. Frank Sacks, Professor of Cardiovascular Disease Prevention, Department of Nutrition, Harvard School of Public Health shares, “We need omega-3 fatty acids for numerous normal body functions, such as controlling blood clotting and building cell membranes in the brain, and since our bodies cannot make omega-3 fats, we must get them through food. Omega-3 fatty acids are also associated with many health benefits, including protection against heart disease and possibly stroke.” 3. SMART: Omega-3’s to promote maximum brain activity, and antioxidants to rid the body of free radicals and keep bodily systems working efficiently. Dr. Fernando Gómez-Pinilla, a UCLA professor of neurosurgery and physiological science who has spent years studying the effects of food, exercise and sleep on the brain shares that, "Omega-3 fatty acids support synaptic plasticity and seem to positively affect the expression of several molecules related to learning and memory that are found on synapses," Gómez-Pinilla said. Our Love of Tea
Numi has teamed up with the nation’s first tea sommelier, James Labe, to offer a number of delicious concoctions that will warm the body and entice the senses. Inspired by Numi’s pure flavor blends and real ingredients, Labe created these delectable drinks below using all of the finest ingredients available.
Americans are having a love affair with tea – hot, iced and now, even in their cocktails. In fact, in 2010 we consumed well over 65 billion servings of tea. As the discovery of fine tea grows among consumers, the very best organic and premium teas are the fastest-growing segment of the market. It’s no secret that the creation of fine cocktails has become an art, with mixologists and “bar chefs” insisting on only the best, freshest and most delicious ingredients. So it’s no surprise that Numi Organic Tea has become one of the bartenders’ most popular choices when they are infusing spirits or creating cocktails. Numi lets nature speak for itself, hand-picking premium organic teas and herbs and blending them with only real fruits, flowers and spices. Since the company uses real ingredients and high quality teas & herbs (not tea dust or fannings), there is no need to apply other, less genuine flavorings or fragrances to create flavor.
This season, Numi has teamed up with the nation’s first tea sommelier, James Labe, to offer a number of ingenious concoctions that will warm the body and entice the senses. Inspired by Numi’s pure flavor blends and real ingredients, Labe created these delectable drinks below using all of the finest ingredients available. By Erica Mayyasi

It may seem like heresy to some, but I love vanilla so much that chocolate comes in a distant second. Growing up, I got in the habit of dabbing my mom’s Madagascar vanilla extract behind my ears, and it quickly became my signature scent. I usually avoid using flavor extracts in my recipes, but this one is an exception—the round, floral, and musky notes of good-quality vanilla extract reinforce the flavor achieved by infusing the milk and cream with a scraped vanilla bean. And you can forget about vanilla’s reputation for being “boring”—even sworn chocoholics are converted once they taste this version. one spoonful of this pure, simple treat, and you’ll see why.

1.
In a medium saucepan heat the milk, cream, and vanilla bean and seeds until steaming but not boiling. Remove from heat and allow to steep 30 minutes. Chill completely in refrigerator, 1–2 hours.
2.
Add sugar, cornstarch, egg yolks, and salt to saucepan and whisk vigorously.
3.
Place pot over medium-high heat and cook, whisking constantly, until mixture begins to thicken, 5–6 minutes. (Once you can lift the whisk from the pudding and it leaves a faint shadow, it’s done. Pudding will seem fairly loose, but it will thicken up further as it chills.)
4.
Strain the pudding through a fine-mesh sieve into a bowl, pressing pudding through sieve with a silicone spatula. Whisk in vanilla extract.
5.
Cool at room temperature for 10 minutes, press a layer of plastic wrap onto the surface of the pudding, and chill completely in refrigerator, 2 hours.

Meals
the Hawaiian Way
The longer, sunny days of summer offer the perfect opportunity to get together with friends and family for flavorful meals from the grill. To host a get-together the Hawaiian way – where all of your friends, family and neighbors feel special – focus on a few well-chosen elements to make even the most spontaneous gathering seem like a carefully orchestrated event. Start with the buns The most experienced grill chefs know selecting the right bun is just as important as what goes inside. King’s Hawaiian, the family-owned company known for its original Hawaiian sweet bread products, offers a lineup of Hamburger Buns, Sandwich Buns and Rolls to please burgerloyalists and slider-connoisseurs alike. Serve-up scrumptious fillings Once you have a great bun, there are endless ways to fill them. Try a light, fluffy and sweet bread to complement savory grilled burgers. Soft and sweet dinner rolls make the perfect pick for sliders. These small buns are great for grilled mini burgers or for something more exotic, such as this recipe for Hawaiian-style Aloha Chicken Sliders. For an added touch, quickly toast the hamburger buns and rolls on the grill for just a few seconds to create an irresistible combination of crispiness and sweetness. For other great summertime recipes, visit www.KingsHawaiian. com/recipes. Provide delicious drinks and appetizers While you’re tending to the grill, keep your hungry guests happy with appetizers and beverages. Serve a classic spinach dip in a hollowed out sweet round bread. Treat them to tropical beverages like the ever-popular Mai Tai or the specialty of the islands, POG, made from passion fruit, orange, and guava juices.

Yoga For Everyone
By Zack Tanck
Photography by Cylla von Tiedmann
Y
oga is big business, one that is largely considered to be a luxury. To Passport to Prana founder YuMee Chung, this didn’t seem right. Chung, a Canadian lawyer who entered the legal profession with the hope of bringing about social change, took her first yoga class on the recommendation of a friend because she was experiencing back pain and numbness in her arms from too many hours in front of the computer. She had been running from doctor to doctor and from body worker to body worker looking for a way to alleviate the work-induced discomfort. Lasting physical relief did not come until she found yoga. After working for a few years as a lawyer and taking yoga classes, Chung realized that her yoga teachers were doing a better job of touching people and changing lives than she was as a paper pusher. So, she decided to open a yoga studio. She juggled that career and law practice until she became too busy to do both. In the end, yoga was the obvious choice. The transition from lawyer to yogi was a huge personal and professional decision. Chung had to face losing the security of a six-figure income and a robust benefits package in lieu of an uncertain future. However, she realized that it was more important to live a healthier, more engaged life in the present moment. After making the jump to yoga instructor, Chung came to the realization that there had to be a way to remove the barriers to entry and make yoga more accessible to the average North American while bringing the yoga community together around a common project. In 2005, she started Passport to Prana as an experimental, collective marketing idea designed to introduce people to the practices of yoga by acquainting them with the yoga studios and teachers in their cities. Knowing that many yoga studios offer a discounted or free first class, and that all yoga studios are keen to meet new students, Chung simply formalized the idea and created structure around the idea of a yoga crawl. Her business concept was (and still is) simple: sell a multi-studio yoga pass that offers customers one free class at each of the participating studios in a given market at a too good to be true price. In the United States, each card costs a maximum of $30 per city, making the cost of each class about a $1 depending on the region, versus the average big-city yoga class, which can cost upwards of $18. The benefits are clear: consumers get a smorgasbord of studio options to try and studios get exposure to a broader customer base than they could develop on their own. Says Chung, “Passport to Prana gives everyone, including absolute beginners, a great way to try out the yoga studios where they live, work and play, no matter what their income level, age, or level of fitness.” In seven years, this relatively straightforward idea has grown to include multiple cities throughout Canada and America. The engine behind Passport to Prana’s growth remained Chung, joined by her business partner Rajen Gandhi, with their singular strategic vision. Approaching the entire venture from a ‘collaborative, not competitive’ perspective, Chung and Gandhi continue to encourage growth through ethical practices and a win-win mentality. Most of the profits from the sale of the actual passports get funneled back into the studios offering the free classes, and despite the popularity of the program, passport prices have remained reasonable. An online yoga portal is also part of their program. Anyone who purchases a Passport to Prana will receive an electronic card that is processed by the yoga studio just before class. The yogi can log onto their Passport to Prana profile to track everything from class attendance to passport information in real time. Studio listings, maps, contact information, up-to-date class schedules, special discounts, and fun contests are also available, making it a must-stop spot for any yoga lover in their city.
