Man again Be a

By Ginny Grimsley

The term “metrosexual” gained lots of momentum throughout the late ’90s and early 2000s to describe an up-swell of heterosexual men with a new attitude -- and new grooming habits. It has since become socially acceptable for men to get their nails groomed; wear “man” purses, or “murses;” and even makeup – all formerly luxuries reserved for girls and women. But advertisers and other media have picked up on a general nostalgia for a time when gender roles were simpler, says Mark Marchetti, a retired police officer who spends his free time scuba diving, hunting, enjoying fine liquor, cigars, and writing adventure novels. “Coming from the most culturally progressive areas of California, I’m basically a live-and-let-live kind of guy, but I can sympathize with the sentiment that male virility has been sequestered, and I think we could afford its return,” Marchetti says. “When I go to other parts of the country and read a sign that says, ‘We Welcome Hunters,’ a great relief washes over me, because that’s not the attitude in California.” He notes some media trends that are successfully embracing old-school manliness, including the Dos Equis ‘Most Interesting Man in the World;’ the popularity in Mixed Martial Arts and the Ultimate Fighting Championship; and TV shows like “Sons of Anarchy.” Marchetti offers the following additional suggestions for men to embrace their virility: • Grow a beard: Facial hair has meant many things to various cultures throughout history, from philosophical indifference to paternal maturity. In case you haven’t already noticed, most women don’t want to compete with their man for “Who’s the Prettiest.” If you can’t grow a good beard, allow the scruff to have its way for about a week, shave on Sunday, rinse, repeat.

• Ditch the domesticated cat lifestyle: One thing is certain – real men were not born to sit still in front of a computer all day under florescent lights, eat Weight Watchers for lunch and watch dancing competitions with their wives at night … But if this lifestyle is necessary during the week, mix it up on the weekend! Go camping, catch a few fish or just cut loose with the boys with a few beers and jokes you wouldn’t tell the boss or wife, assuming they’re two different people. • For the young bloods … Too many teenage boys sit on their butts (getting fat!) playing video games. Why not use the technology of the natural world? Check out a sport, a team or individual one, and see what your body is made of. Fishing and hiking is a great way to experience what life was like … before digital games and instant messaging! • Get reacquainted with your muscles: You can make a good case that men belong to the more “physical” gender; we have better coordination skills, tend to be physically stronger, have better night vision and, packed with testosterone, have sex on the mind most of the time. A sedentary lifestyle and bad eating habits have taken what may be our greatest distinguishing feature and turned it against us. But there’s nothing like the feel of a cathartic workout to put a guy back in touch with his body – and the benefits of exercise affect nearly every aspect of a man’s life. • Embrace your “Inner-Dude;” he’s alright: Although confidence makes everyone attractive, one could argue this goes double for men. Self-assurance, however, is impossible if you’re constantly second-guessing your instincts, like what you find funny or simply needing time to yourself. Don’t be afraid of what you like, or what you need.

While attending high school in what is now Silicon Valley, Marchetti became a music instructor and, later, a scuba diver. He has traveled the world, diving reefs and shipwrecks, and meeting colorful characters. Marchetti is also a racecar driver, hunter, fisherman, golfer and writer. He has four grown children and lives with his wife; they divide their time between homes in Montara, Calif. and Catalina Island.

About Real Heroes

by Jay Platt

What is a hero? Webster's dictionary defines a hero as someone who's admired for his achievements and noble qualities, and one who shows great courage. Fortunately, today we have many examples of real heroes. Look no further than the U.S. military, police and firefighters -- men and women who put their lives at risk for others. A real hero also is the person who is fighting cancer or some other chronic illness, and does so with great dignity and grace. Though they may be in pain or discomfort, they somehow make those around them feel better, do better, and be better. Which brings me to Lance Armstrong. I was a supporter of his since his first Tour de France win. Coming back from cancer the way he did, and racing the way he did drug-free (supposedly), inspired me to no end. When others questioned how he was able to do the things he did without any help from performance-enhancing drugs, I defended him as if he were a personal friend. As a cancer survivor myself, and someone who continues to battle the disease daily, he inspired me. He gave me strength when I felt like I had none. He even motivated me to challenge myself by attempting demanding physical feats, like hiking the 2,100-mile Appalachian Trail beginning to end. When I got tired and wanted to quit, I'd think to myself, “If Lance can do the things he does, I can do this, too.” So, his recent revelations to Oprah Winfrey hit me like a 50-pound sledgehammer to the chest. When he admitted to lying about taking performance enhancing drugs, I felt like he had personally lied to me. And that's when I knew that he is nothing more than a fake hero. Fake heroes have none of the qualities of a real hero. Rather, they lie, cheat, steal, and do whatever it takes to make themselves look good and heroic. Winning, to them, is the most important thing, and who they hurt in the process really doesn't matter. All of which, sadly, describes Lance Armstrong. I know he still will have his defenders. I've already heard from people who have basically said, “Well, what about all the good he's done for cancer research?” While that is true, and I certainly hope that Livestrong is not negatively affected by Armstrong's admission, the fact is that the whole organization was started based on a lie. 26 FOCUS of SWFL 2013

He never would have had the millions of dollars, the fame, and the incredible story if it had not been for the lie that he told for so long. And, although it is uncomfortable to say so, how do we know that he did not get cancer because of his taking performance enhancing drugs? Would that have changed his story? I'm sure, for many, it would have. And what of his admission now? Surely, that took courage? It was heroic, right? Hardly! First of all, look at to whom he chose to tell all of the details. Oprah Winfrey. I have no doubt that was a well-thought-out strategy on his part. He, undoubtedly, was advised to go where he would most likely garner sympathy and do it before an audience that probably knows little about cycling, and that is most likely to give him a pass on his transgressions. Even with all that though, he still could have done the heroic thing. But he did not. He could have looked into the camera and said in the sincerest way he could muster that steroids are not the way. That he, in all likelihood, gave himself cancer in his quest for fame. Think of the kids who could have benefited from hearing such a thing. Instead, however, he defiantly said that since everyone else was supposedly doing it, he felt justified in doing it, too. Very hero like, huh?

Jay Platt was medically retired from the Marine Corps in 1998 after suffering complications from the cancer von Hippel Lindau (VHL), a genetic disease that resulted in brain and spinal tumors, kidney cancer, and the loss of his left eye. Told his future would be considerably dimmer than his past, Platt set out to rebuild himself physically, mentally and spiritually, and to challenge himself by setting demanding physical goals. He is one of fewer than 300 people to have hiked the 2,100mile southbound Appalachian Trail; one of three to swim from Alcatraz Island to San Francisco with hands and feet tied; and the only person to swim across the Mississippi while blindfolded, handcuffed and shackled. Proceeds from his adventures and sales of his documentary benefit non-profits, including the VHL Family Alliance. For more information, visit: www.livingunstoppable.com.

Inimitable Pieces That Evoke Extraordinary Moments It is passion for gold and enthusiasm for the best craftsmanship – that which transforms a jewel into a work of art. Its collections are full of iconic jewels that serve as a benchmark for authentic mastery in sculpting gold and achieving a matte-shine combination effect. This savoir-faire along with the generous volumes and detailed carving of the gold bring each piece to life. For Carrera y Carrera, its link to Spain is essential as a source of inspiration for the development of its collections. The entire creative and development process of each jewelry piece takes place wholly in the Madrid workshop. Each step in the creation of a piece is influenced by the Spanish character that has become one of the fundamental pillars in the evolution of the company’s excellent trajectory throughout its history. Carrera y Carrera endures thanks to a standard of incalculable value – the savoir faire of the nearly 60 jewelers who work in its Madrid workshop, where tradition and the expertise of master goldsmiths are joined together. Peace and Natural Beauty By Kerry Tropeano

Renowned designer Paloma Picasso creates a stunning new jewelry collection inspired by the olive branch as a symbol of peace and abundance. The new collection, Paloma’s Olive Leaf, captures elements from the olive groves surrounding her home in Morocco, a place of serenity, and also represents a link to her name. “ Paloma means dove in Spanish,” she says. “ We are all familiar with the dove carrying an olive branch as a peace offering. The jewelry I’ve created pays tribute both to the messenger’s noble mission and gardens as a refuge of peace and tranquility.” 30 FOCUS of SWFL 2013

The collection is sumptuous yet delicate, a garden of precious metals shot with gemstones. A bib necklace traces the tender leaves and stems in an intricate, openwork pattern of brilliant green tsavorites and 18 karat gold. This elegant profusion of leaves forges pendants in gleaming gold or sterling silver, as well as one-of-a-kind rings in 18 karat white gold and diamonds. Gold cuffs echo the ancient olive wreathes that crowned the glorious and victorious. The designer places beautiful and colorful gemstones among leafy branches of gold or silver. Rubellite and green peridot cabochons are entwined in ring settings of 18 karat gold with diamonds. Pear-shaped rubellites accent luxuriant drop earrings of gold and sparkling diamond leaves. There are also earrings with perfect ovals of translucent blue topaz suspended boldly from little gold leaves. Tiffany’s skilled artisans hand cut and set each stone to unleash maximum color and light. Paloma’s Olive Leaf is wonderfully fluid and moves with an easy grace dazzling in the light like leaves lifted on a gentle breeze or flowers dancing under the sun. Paloma Picasso introduced her first collection of jewels for Tiffany & Co. in 1980. Her use of colorful gemstones, which brought fiery orange opals and shocking pink tourmalines into fashion, and her use of “ Scribbles,” “ Graffiti” and her signature “ X” instantly established her as jewelry design’s newest star. With her unerring eye for glamour and her informed sense of personal style, she continues to create—and Tiffany continues to craft—exuberant and visually stunning jewels favored by the world’s most stylish women.

Some of the most nutrition-packed foods not only taste great, they’re readily available at the grocery store and easy to prepare, Harry says. “The more you eat, the more you’ll crave them.” Here are five food combos for shoppers with healthy eating on their minds: • Tomato, garlic, chicken and almonds: Tomatoes contain one of the world’s most concentrated sources of cancer-fighting lycopene, which is best absorbed from tomatoes that are cooked. Garlic has been used for centuries for various health purposes and is a known free-radical destroyer. Nuts help to lose weight, maintain healthy blood pressure and support moods; almond crumbs are a great substitute for bread crumbs on chicken. Pair these goodies with whole wheat couscous for a full dinner. • Pomegranate-Balsamic tempeh: With its high protein, fiber and isoflavones content, and meaty texture, tempeh is heavily utilized by vegetarians. It’s made from soybeans processed in a manner similar to cheese making. Like tofu, tempeh takes on the flavors with which it is cooked or marinated, including zesty-tangy balsamic vinegar – perfect for accentuating salads.

Staples for Youth & Vitality By Ginny Grimsley

It’s the question we ask ourselves almost every day: What’s for dinner? Entwined in this daily dialogue is wondering whether we’ll need to dash into the grocery store on the way home from work. The next time we make one of those supermarket pit stops, Dr. Eudene Harry, author of “Live Younger in 8 Simple Steps,”, would like us to veer in a new direction. “When people shop on the go, they tend to gravitate toward old standbys and foods they can multipurpose with – usually not the most nutritious choices possible. But by substituting a few items on your list, you can not only look and feel more youthful, you’ll boost your resistance to certain cancers and other illnesses.”

• Mashed cauliflower gone Greek: Not only does the “original” yogurt have a thicker texture and richer taste, it’s also denser in lactobacilli, the healthy bacteria that may delay the onset of cancer. And yogurt is low in fat and high in protein, which is essential for many body functions, including building and repairing muscle tissue, organs, bones and connective tissue. Rather than add fatty, cholesterol-filled butter and sour cream to starchy potatoes that stick to your ribs, why not pair two healthy options with mashed cauliflower with Greek yogurt and fresh black pepper for simple goodness? • Sushi – wild salmon, minced cucumbers, shredded carrots, kelp, sesame seeds and rice: A sushi roll is much more filling and satisfying than a non-sushi eater would think. Many grocery chains offer ready-made rolls, but they are also fairly easy to make. A bamboo roller is a great start; place a sheet of nutrient-dense kelp as the first thing on the roller, and add, lengthwise, desired ingredients. Your first try is not likely to be perfect, but the tasty and healthy ingredients will be there. • Fruit salad for dessert: Bring together chopped apples, strawberries, cantaloupe, watermelon and pineapple with blueberries and grapes for a sweet and juicy post-dinner palate-cleanser. Lemon juice prevents fruits from bruising. If that’s not enough, combine the salad with Greek yogurt – perhaps blended with vanilla or almond extract – and fiberfilled granola for a parfait.

“A Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (D.O.) is a Dr. with a medical degree who has taken all the courses of a medical student plus, “on top of all those courses is Osteopathic Principles and Practice.” There, in lies the distinction. It’s manipulation. According to the doctor, many D.O.s view it as a tool to aid in the “manipulation” of the whole body, spine, lymphoid, and soft tissue. This is a learned specialty. Not every D.O. uses it.” Manipulation is a complimentary or cooperative method to the traditional treatment in oncology that gives a more holistic approach to treating the patient. With that said, one might ask how is the manipulation of utilizing the whole body, spine, lymphoid, and soft tissue helpful in aiding a cancer patient.

Traditional & Complimentary Cancer Care

By Gina Battle

Advice from a D.O. Specialist Nobody ever wants to hear the words, “You have cancer. I’m sorry.” Cancer affects people daily and does not discriminate. The natural inclination in conjunction with the fear, shock and the unknown after receiving a cancer diagnosis is to sort out all viable options, including seeking the best medical advice and treatment from a compassionate, caring doctor who is equally determined to fight for quality longevity. Eric T. Lubiner, D.O., Board Certified Physician in Medical Oncology, Hematology & Internal Medicine is one of five partners at Florida Cancer Specialists & Research Institute with two locations in Port Charlotte and North Port, Florida. Before making his way to South West Florida in 2000, the good doctor was busy building an impressive academic resume. He earned a Doctoral degree and worked as a nuclear medical technologist before going to medical school. He took up dentistry and completed his Residency in Hematology Medical Oncology. 36 FOCUS of SWFL 2013

Manipulation is beneficial to patients because every disease – cancer in particular is based on the anatomy, where the cancerous tumor is located in the body and other areas it may possibly affect. There are clinical trials that show if something in your stomach is bothersome the issue could very well have manifested or be in the area of the back. The symptoms can be multifaceted and can include many variables and it is the position of the D.O. to learn very quickly, probably more so than an M.D. the location it began and “what it stems from”. Dr. Lubiner has observed “D.O.s make very good oncologists because oncologists are really the primary care physician’s link to the patient.” Once someone has a diagnosis of cancer the oncologist or D.O. takes over and the patient along with the specialist will build a quick rapport through consultation, chemotherapy, and radiation treatments, often times, resulting in less frequent visits to the primary physician, if at all. However, this is not recommended. The word cancer has the power to evoke incredible pain and emotion. Mindful, there’s no cure for cancer it is often detrimental for patients, their families and caregivers. Researchers are making daily strides toward a cure. There are many things we as laypeople are still unaware of. • It’s a natural occurrence for the cells in our body to become tissue, then to become organs during the process of in utero development. That’s considered following the rules. Sometimes cells break the rules. Researchers are targeting cells and mutations in order to get further knowledge about them. The targeted mutations and the effects they cause will allow researchers to understand how the cells break the rules. Once this is found out they will be prevented from having the ability to travel to the lung, liver, pancreas or other organs growing and spreading uncontrollably.

“Age. The longer you’re on the planet, the longer you will have the chance that one of these things will go wrong.” If Dr. Lubiner were to write a prescription for the prevention of cancer, he would strongly insist on the following: 1. Have and maintain a positive attitude! He’s seen Stage-4 to remission in part due to a resilient attitude. 2. Seek the help of a specialist. Don’t attempt your own treatment methods. 3. Be cautious when it comes to diagnosing yourself on the Internet. He suggests websites such as The American Cancer Society (He’s a board member of ACS & Relay for Life). Another website to visit is The National Cancer Institute. These types of resources are valuable and reliable.

• Every cell in our body has a lifespan. They turn three times a day in a 24-hour period. • The brain and nervous system never turn over. When people say they have a brain tumor, it’s a tumor of the neurons (a tumor of the supporting cells.) • Cancer is not just one disease it is made up of over 100 diseases. Think about the various types of blood, bone, internal organs, brain and skin cancers you may have heard about. • Cells divide hundreds of billions of times in one’s lifetime. Once a cell divides there’s a chance for the mutation of a cell. This may all sound daunting, but there’s no need to panic. Most of the mutated cells end up dying immediately as they are not comparable with being persistent. So, what is the number one risk factor of cancer… smoking, genetics, radiation, or asbestos? The doctor answered readily

4. D.O. is a little bit more holistic in their approach and do bring in other aspects of care including nutrition, exercise and positive thinking (attitude.) 5. It is imperative to be honest and open with the D.O. about your outside complimentary/cooperative treatment plan. “I feel very strongly about all of those things and I spend time talking to my patients. They are all very important!” Not surprising Dr. Lubiner is highly sought after throughout SW Florida because he is a D.O. “Taking care of cancer patients is a very humbling experience and I give a lot of credit to the patients and families who have to deal day-to-day; to my partners; to our staff of 42 from the front-desk greeter to the eight full-time RN’s.

Getting the Right Fit By Kelly Moore and Mary Pifko

Did you know that 85% of women are wearing the wrong size bra? Yes, that’s what I said… 85%! The surge in awareness and increase in bra fittings has proven that 8 out of 10 women are wearing the wrong size bra. The majority of the problem lies in the band being too large. The decrease in band size to accommodate a more snug and proper fit, has increased the width and depth of the cup size women need to achieve their correct size. Case in point, a woman who wears a 36D cup when properly fit would likely fit into a 34DD or 32F size bra. So what’s a woman to do with all of this overwhelming information? How do you know you are wearing the right bra? There is only on way to truly know… and that is to do a proper bra fitting. Mary and I are going to give you the basics… step by step. If doing this on your own makes you uncomfortable there are many great bra fitting experts out there to give you a one on one consultation.

Measurement Guidelines for American Fit: Step 1: Measure your band size: Wearing an unpadded bra, and using a soft tape measure, measure firmly around your ribcage, directly underneath your breasts. The tape measure should be held horizontally around your body and the tape should be taught with no sliding in the back. If the number is un-even round up. This measurement is your under bust or band measurement. Example: 36 = 36 but 37 = 38. Step 2: Measure your cup size: Wearing an unpadded bra, and using a soft tape measure, wrap the tape measure around the fullest area of your bust. Hold taught and keep the tape measure straight. This is your bust measurement. Make a note of this measurement. Subtract the band measurement from the cup measurement to get your cup size. Each inch represents a cup size. Example: less than 1 inch = AA cup, 1 inches = A cup, 2 inches = B cup, 3 inches = C cup and so on. For example: If you have a 36-band size and 42 bust size you are a 36F cup. 42 - 36 = 6. 6 inches is equivalent to an F cup.

The ‘Nina’ was built completely by hand and without the use of power tools, and was called by Archaeology magazine “the most historically correct Columbus replica ever built.” The craftsmanship and the details in the rigging make it a truly fascinating visit back to the Age of Discovery. The ‘Nina’ was used in the production of the film ‘1492’ starring Gerard Depardieu and directed by Ridley Scott. General admissions are $8 for adults, $7 for seniors (age 60+), $6 for children ages 5-16 and children 4 and under are free. The ships are open daily while in port from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Groups of 15 or more are invited to schedule a 30 minute guided tour with a crewmember on any weekday. Group tours can be arranged by calling (787) 672-2152. Pure Naples is the docking sponsor for the third year. For additional ‘Nina’ and ‘Pinta’ at Tin City information, please visit: www.thenina.com. The forces behind getting these monumental ships to Naples, specifically Tin City, Captains Lance and Harry Julian of Pure Naples have worked closely with the Freedom Waters Foundation (FWF). The Foundation will be volunteering to man the operations of the ships for the duration of their dockage. Freedom Waters Foundation is a non-profit organization with a mission to enhance lives by providing boating opportunities and marine related activities for people with disabilities, life threatening illnesses, youth at risk and others with special needs. The various programs developed by Freedom Waters help accomplish this mission and include adaptive sailing and fishing, Weller Days (named after co-founder, John Weller, 4 time cancer survivor and yacht broker) yacht outings, and special events. “These are exciting times in the field of ophthalmology. Stem cell therapy is being tested now for safety in clinical trials at Massachusetts Eye and Ear,” said Dr. Joseph Walker, founder of Retina Consultants and an adjunct clinical faculty member with Schepens Eye Research Institute|Massachusetts Eye and Ear. “We are very encouraged by the results we have seen so far.” Schepens Eye Research Institute|Massachusetts Eye and Ear (SERI|MEE) is the largest eye research facility in the world and has collaborated with Retina Consultants of Southwest Florida on the symposia for the past 18 years. Dr. Dean Eliott, Associate Director of Retina Service at MEE, will review the latest stem cell research and what it means for individuals with AMD. Scientists are now conducting Phase II research in collaboration with Advanced Cell Technologies, which has developed a stem cell line that when injected into the eye is designed to restore the retina and improve vision in individuals with AMD. SERI|MEE will be a clinical site for the Phase II clinical trials.

AMD is the leading cause of legal blindness in people over the age of 50 in the western world. Approximately 13 million Americans have wet or dry AMD. In addition to sharing the newest AMD therapies, treatments for other retinal disorders will be discussed. Among those will be Jetrea, which was approved for commercial use in January for individuals with symptomatic vitreomacular adhesion (VMA). Retina Consultants was a clinical trial site evaluating this new treatment in 2007 and 2009. Dr. Kip Connor, assistant professor with Harvard Medical School and a research associate with MEE will discuss the dietary implications of AMD and how individuals can adjust their diet to preserve as much of their vision as possible. Rich Godfrey, patient liaison with SERI|MEE, will give a patient’s perspective of the challenges he’s faced and lessons he’s learned from having AMD. Other speakers during the symposia include Dr. Walker, Dr. Glenn L. Wing, Dr. Ashish Sharma, and Dr. Donald C. Fletcher of Retina Consultants of Southwest Florida and the National Ophthalmic Research Institute (NORI). Retina Consultants of Southwest Florida is the most experienced team of retina specialists in the Southwest Florida region with combined experience of more than 100 years. Offices are conveniently located in Fort Myers, Cape Coral, Bonita Springs, Naples and Port Charlotte.

problems walking afterward, and about a fourth are unable to live independently afterwards. It’s one of the No. 1 reasons older adults move into nursing homes,” says Stevens, www.DRSHealthInc.com, an AMA Physician Recognition Award recipient. People with osteoporosis – a bone-thinning condition that affects 44 million Americans – have a much greater risk of suffering a fracture, Stevens says. Bones lose strength with increased age, and osteoporosis primarily affects women older than 50, but men make up 20 percent of osteoporosis suffers, he says. There are more than 4.1 million Floridians over the age of 60. “The most common fractures are to hips, vertebrae and wrists – the bones that experience the most physical stress on a daily basis. Spinal fractures can also seriously affect a person’s quality of life. They often have a difficult time bathing, dressing, or walking independently,” he says. Stevens offers tips for preventing a broken hip: • Focus on osteoporosis & nutrition: Stevens says he advises his patients – especially women – to prevent osteoporosis by consuming bone-healthy vitamins, such as Vitamin D, calcium, manganese, magnesium and other crucial building blocks for Type I Collagen. Regular exercise also helps strengthen bones.

Is Medication Increasing Florida Seniors’ Risk of Hip Fractures? By Ginny Grimsley

Women sustain three-quarters of all hip fractures, according to the Centers for Disease Control. Now, there’s yet another concern for Florida’s senior women – heartburn medication, such as Prilosec or Prevacid, further increase their risk. A recent British Medical Journal report found that former and current female smokers who had taken proton pump inhibitors at least three times a week for more than two years had a 50 percent increased risk of breaking a hip. One of the most common life changers for otherwise healthy older Americans, and those with other medical problems, is breaking a hip, says award-winning orthopedic surgeon Marc S. Stevens. “About half of patients who suffer a hip fracture have 54 FOCUS of SWFL 2013

• Avoid common accidents: While time, lack of adequate nutrition and chronic conditions such as osteoporosis make bones susceptible to breaks, a fall often finishes the job. Most injuries occur at home – where we spend most of our time. Keep pathways to the bathroom well-lighted at night to help reduce the risk. If you have area rugs, make sure they’re secured to the floor. Install grab bars in the tub or shower. • O3 Bone & Joint Premium: Originally developed for his patients by Dr. Stevens and his staff, this beverage mix brings together all of the essential nutrients for optimum bone health. The product – found in Florida Walmart locations in Miami, Jacksonville, Tampa Bay, Orlando and Ocala – it’s especially helpful for people with osteoporosis, osteoarthritis, fibromyalgia and chronic pain. This natural formula has been used as an alternative to surgery or drugs. “Osteoporosis is currently not a curable condition – but it can often be prevented simply through exercise, good nutrition, not smoking and not drinking excessively,” Stevens says. “There is nothing sadder than to see one of my older, healthy patients go from happy, independent lifestyles to assisted-living or nursing homes because of a fall.” Dr. Marc Stevens is an award-winning orthopedic surgeon certified by the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons and a Fellow in the American College of Surgeons and the International College of Surgeons. He has been recognized as one of America’s Top Orthopedic Surgeons and a World Leading Physician (International Association of Orthopedic Surgeons.)

Choosing a Personal Physician By Ginny Grimsley

• Someone who is a good listener. Most diagnoses can be made or suspected by letting the patient tell his or her story • Someone who is willing to say, “I don’t know,” but does know where to go to get the answer, such as referring you to another doctor or using medical knowledge bases such as “Up To Date.” • Readiness to use the latest technology for communicating with patients, such as the I-phone, e-mail or Skype. There’s a crisis in primary health care. In some cities, almost 90 percent of primary care physicians are not accepting new patients because their practices are full. And it’s only going to get worse, warns noted physician and emeritus professor of medicine Dr. Paul Griner, author of “The Power of Patient Stories: Learning Moments in Medicine.” “In 2014, 32 million people currently without health insurance will become insured and there will be nowhere near enough primary-care physicians to meet their needs,” Griner says. “Less than 20 percent of new physicians are entering primary care, which includes the specialties of family medicine, general internal medicine and general pediatrics.” Griner, an internist and longtime advocate of physicianpatient relationship as the first and most vital diagnostic tool, says it’s important to find a doctor who will take the time to listen to you. But first, you need to decide what kind of primary care physician will best meet your needs. For instance, a family physician can care for both you and your children. A general internist is trained for the care of adults. A geriatrician has additional training in the care of older patients. A gynecologist may also have an interest in primary care. Once you’ve made that decision, he offers these suggestions for qualities to look for: • Someone who is interested in knowing the whole patient -- not just the illness. As the great Sir William Osler, Regis Professor of Medicine at Oxford, once said, “The good physician knows the disease the patient has. The great physician knows the patient who has the disease.”

• Someone who values team care and values the role of advanced practice nurses or physician’s assistants. “Ask around,” Griner says. “Get recommendations from friends and colleagues; the experience of other patients is always helpful. Askyour county medical society for names of physicians who are accepting new patients, or ask the premier hospital in your area, then check their credentials and look for feedback about timeliness, friendliness, etc., on-line.” If you want to do something about the primary care physician shortage, there are ways the public can help, Griner adds. • Advocate for more support for primary care through your state and U.S. representatives. “Support” can include more money for primary care training grants; better compensation for primary care physicians; and expansion of sites that qualify as physician shortage areas • Support the development of local “accountable care organizations” or networks by your local hospital, health system or group practice. The goal of these new organizations is to guarantee comprehensive, continuous care with the primary care physician as the manager of a team of health professionals. • Support community initiatives to recruit primary care physicians through incentives such as loan relief.

• A patient-centered atmosphere in the office Hematologist/internist Paul Griner has had a 59-year career in medicine. He is a professor of medicine emeritus at the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry and was a consultant at the Massachusetts General Hospital, senior lecturer at Harvard Medical School, and consultant to the Institute for Healthcare Improvement (IHI) in Cambridge, Mass. He has written or co-written 130 journal articles, book chapters, and books on clinical medicine, medical education, and health policy. Tips for Baby Boomers

By Lina Lasalle

The economy may be recovering, but some of the changes wrought by the Great Recession may be longlasting. Anyone planning for retirement, no matter what their age, needs to take those changes into account, says financial advisor Philip Rousseaux, a member of the esteemed Million Dollar Round Table association’s exclusive Top of the Table forum for the world’s most successful financial services professionals.

Here are Rousseaux’s suggestions for ensuring you’re part of that 14 percent. • Don’t take risks you can’t afford. This is another common mistake. “Don’t put the bulk of your assets into anything that makes your principal vulnerable. Gambling that you’re going to win big on the market, or any other investment, means you also risk losing big.” A portion of your investment should have a guaranteed return.

“A lot of boomers had all of their retirement investments in the stock market and, if they didn’t lose their principal, it will take some time for them to recoup their gains. • Seek any guidance from independent financial advisors. This has two benefits: Advisors who aren’t marketing their own products have no conflicts of interest. “You wouldn’t go to a commissioned salesman for advice on buying a high-tech product. Instead, you’d probably turn to a trusted friend or an independent expert source, like Consumer Reports. Take the same care with something as important as your retirement.” The second benefit is that independent advisors can devise creative, innovative solutions to meet the needs of individual clients. Those working for companies like MetLife are not free to think outside the box. And that’s especially important In this new, post-recession economy. • Consider alternatives to the stock market. One of the effects of the recession is that the public realizes Wall Street is not a safe retirement plan. Even if it can get you there, it’s not necessarily going to keep you there.“There are a number of great, safer alternatives,” Rousseaux says. One of those is fixed, indexed annuities. “You loan an insurance company money and it guarantees you payments over a specified length of time. It’s a contract between you and the company,” he explains. Fixed-rate indexed annuities have a minimum and maximum interest payment that’s linked to a common index, such as the Dow. When the Dow goes up or down, so does the interest rate, but it never go below the guaranteed minimum or above the guaran-

teed maximum. “Your principal is safe and you can ride an up market without the risk,” he says. With pension plans a luxury of the past and Social Security not a guarantee for the future, Rousseaux says whatever your age, it’s important to start planning now for retirement by creating your own private pension. “The good news is, our life expectancy grows every year,” he notes. “It’s up to you to ensure that you have a great quality of life when you decide you no longer want to work.”

50 Years

of the

nine-eleven

By Scott Black

For five decades, the 911 has been the heart of the Porsche brand. Few other automobiles in the world can look back on such a long tradition and such continuity as the Porsche 911. It has been inspiring car enthusiasts the world over since its debut as the model 901 at the IAA International Automotive Show in September 1963. Today it is considered the quintessential sports car, the benchmark for all others. The 911 is also the central point of reference for all other Porsche series. From the Cayenne to the Panamera, every Porsche is the most sporting automobile in its category, and each one carries a piece of the 911 philosophy. Over 820,000 Porsche 911s have been built, making it the most successful sports car in the world. For each of its seven generations the engineers in Zuffenhausen and Weissach have reinvented it, time and time again demonstrating to the world the innovative power of the Porsche brand. Like no other vehicle, the 911 reconciles apparent contradictions such as sportiness and everyday practicality, tradition and innovation, exclusivity and social acceptance, design and functionality. It is no wonder that each generation has written its own personal success story. Ferry Porsche best described its unique qualities: “The 911 is the only car you could drive on an African safari or at Le Mans, to the theatre or through New York City traffic.” In addition to its classic yet unique lines, the Porsche 911 has always been distinguished by its advanced technology. Many of the ideas and technologies that made their debut in the Porsche 911 were conceived on the race track. The 911 was committed to the performance principle from the start, and motor racing is its most important test lab. From the very beginning it has been at home on circuits all over the world, earning a reputation as a versatile and dependable winner. Indeed, a good two thirds of Porsche's 30,000 race victories to date were notched up by the 911. 60 FOCUS of SWFL 2013

For Porsche, the 50th anniversary of this iconic sports car is the central theme of 2013. There will be a wide variety of anniversary events, starting with the “Retro Classics” automobile show in Stuttgart. From 7 to 10 March the Porsche Museum will ring in the anniversary year with four special exhibits, an early-model 911 Turbo Coupé, a 911 Cabriolet study from 1981, a 1997 street version 911 GT1 and the pre-series Type 754 T7. This chassis by Professor Ferdinand Alexander Porsche was a milestone on the way to the 911 design. The company is also sending an authentic 1967 model 911 on a world tour. Over the course of the year, this vintage nine-eleven will travel to five continents where it will be shown in places like Pebble Beach CA, Shanghai, Goodwood UK, Paris and Australia. As an ambassador for the Porsche brand, this vintage 911 will be in attendance at many international fairs, historical rallies and motor sport events. The Porsche Museum is celebrating “50 years of the Porsche 911” from 4 June through 29 September 2013, with a special exhibition featuring the history and development of the nine-eleven. In the spring the museum’s own publishing house, Edition PorscheMuseum, will publish an anniversary edition entitled “911x911.”

FOCUS of SWFL 2013 61

Generations of 911 The First 911 (1963) - Birth of a Legend As the successor to the Porsche 356, the 911 won the hearts of sports car enthusiasts from the outset. The prototype was first unveiled at the Frankfurt IAA Motor Show in 1963 as the 901, and renamed the 911 for its market launch in 1964. Its air-cooled six-cylinder boxer engine delivered 130 hp, giving it an impressive top speed of 210 hp. If you wanted to take things a little slower, starting in 1965 you could also opt for the four-cylinder Porsche 912. In 1966 Porsche presented the 160 hp 911 S, which was the first to feature forged alloy wheels from Fuchs. The 911 Targa, with its distinctive stainless steel roll bar, made its debut in late 1966 as the world's first ever safety cabriolet. The semiautomatic Sportomatic four-speed transmission joined the lineup in 1967. With the 911T of the same year, and the later E and S variants, Porsche became the first German manufacturer to comply with strict US exhaust emission control regulations. The Porsche 911 became more and more powerful as displacement increased, initially to 2.2 liters (1969) and later to 2.4 (1971). The 911 Carrera RS 2.7 of 1972 with 210 hp engine and weighing less than 1000 kg remains the epitome of a dream car to this day. Its characteristic “ducktail” was the world's first rear spoiler on a production vehicle.

The G-Series (1973) - The Second Generation Ten years after its premiere, the engineers at Porsche gave the 911 its first thorough makeover. The G model was produced from 1973 to 1989, longer than any other 911 generation. It featured prominent bellows bumpers, an innovation designed to meet the latest crash test standards in the United States. Occupant protection was further improved by three-point safety belts as standard equipment, as well as integrated headrests. One of the most important milestones in the 911 saga was the 1974 unveiling of the first Porsche 911 Turbo with a three-liter 260 hp engine and enormous rear spoiler. With its unique blend of luxury and performance, the Turbo became synonymous with the Porsche mystique. The next performance jump came in 1977 with the intercooler-equipped 911 Turbo 3.3. At 300 hp it was the best in its class. In 1983 the naturally aspirated 911 Carrera superseded the SC; with a 3.2 liter 231 62 FOCUS of SWFL 2013

hp engine, it became a favorite collectors’ item. Starting in 1982, fresh air enthusiasts could also order the 911 as a Cabriolet. The 911 Carrera Speedster, launched in 1989, was evocative of the legendary 356 of the fifties. The 964 (1988) - Classic Modern Just when automotive experts were predicting the imminent end of an era, in 1988 Porsche came out with the 911 Carrera 4 (964). After fifteen years of production the 911 platform was radically renewed with 85 percent new components, giving Porsche a modern and sustainable vehicle. Its air-cooled 3.6 liter boxer engine delivered 250 hp. Externally, the 964 differed from its predecessors only slightly, in its aerodynamic polyurethane bumpers and automatically extending rear spoiler, but internally it was almost completely different. The new model was designed to captivate drivers not only with sporty performance but also with enhanced comfort. It came with ABS, Tiptronic, power steering, and airbags, and rode on a completely redesigned chassis with light alloy control arms and coil springs instead of the previous torsion-bar suspension. A revolutionary member of the new 911 line right from the start was the all-wheel drive Carrera 4 model. In addition to Carrera Coupé, Cabriolet and Targa versions, starting in 1990 customers could also order the 964 Turbo. Initially powered by

the proven 3.3 liter boxer engine, in 1992 the Turbo was upgraded to a more powerful 360 hp 3.6 liter power plant. Today, the 964 Carrera RS, 911 Turbo S, and 911 Carrera 2 Speedster are particularly in demand among collectors.

The 993 (1993) - The Last Air-Cooled Models The 911 with the internal design number 993 remains the one true love of many a Porsche driver. The remarkably pleasing design has much to do with this. The integrated bumpers underscore the smooth elegance of its styling. The front section is lower-slung than on the earlier models, made possible by a switch from round to polyellipsoid headlights. The 993 quickly gained a reputation for exceptional dependability and reliability. It was also agile, as the first 911 with a newly designed aluminum chassis. The Turbo version was the first to have a bi-turbo engine, giving it the lowest-emission stock automotive power train in the world in 1995. The hollow-spoke aluminum wheels, never before used on any car, were yet another innovation of the all-wheel drive Turbo version. The Porsche 911 GT2

was aimed at the sports car purist who cherished the thrill of high speeds. An electric glass roof that slid under the rear window was one of the innovations of the 911 Targa. But the real reason dyed-in-the-wool Porsche enthusiasts still revere the 993 is that this model, produced from 1993 to 1998, was the last 911 with an air-cooled engine. The 996 (1997) - Water-Cooled The 996, which rolled off the assembly line from 1997 to 2005, represented a major turning point in the history of the 911. It retained all the character of its classic heritage, but was an entirely new automobile. This comprehensively redesigned generation was the first to be driven by a water-cooled boxer engine. Thanks to its four-valve cylinder heads it achieved 300 hp and broke new ground in terms of reduced emissions, noise, and fuel consumption. The exterior design was a reinterpretation of the 911's classic line, but with a lower drag coefficient of 0.30. The lines of the 996 were also a result of component sharing with Porsche’s successful Boxster model. Its most obvious exterior feature were the headlights with integrated turn signals, at first controversial but later copied by many other manufacturers. On the inside, drivers experienced an entirely 64 FOCUS of SWFL 2013

new cockpit. Driving comfort now also played a greater role alongside the typical sporty characteristics. With the 996 Porsche launched an unprecedented product offensive with a whole series of new variations. The 911 GT3 became one of the highlights of the model range in 1999, keeping the tradition of the Carrera RS alive. The 911 GT2, the first car equipped with ceramic brakes as standard, was marketed as an extreme sports vehicle starting in the fall of 2000. The 997 (2004) - Classicism and Modernity In July 2004 Porsche unveiled the new generation 911 Carrera and 911 Carrera S models, referred to internally as the 997. The clear oval headlights with separate blinkers in the front apron were a visual return to older 911 models, but the 997 offered more than just style. It was a high-performance vehicle, with a 3.6 liter boxer engine that turned out 325 hp while the new 3.8 liter engine of the Carrera S managed an incredible 355 hp. The chassis was also substantially reworked, and the Carrera S came with Porsche Active Suspension Management as standard equipment. In 2006 Porsche introduced the 911 Turbo, the first gasoline-powered production automobile to include a turbocharger with variable turbine geometry. A model update in the fall of 2008 made the 997 even more efficient thanks to direct fuel injection and a dual clutch transmission. Never before had the 911 series made such extensive allowances to suit drivers’ individual preferences, and with Carrera, Targa, Cabriolet, rear or all-wheel drive, Turbo, GTS, special models, and road versions of GT racing cars, the 911 family ultimately comprised 24 model versions. The 991 (2011) – Refined by Experience This car, known internally as the 991, represents the greatest technical leap in the evolution of the 911. Already the

class benchmark for decades, the new 911 generation raised performance and efficiency to new levels. A totally new suspension with a longer wheelbase, wider track, larger tyres and an ergonomically optimized interior – it all adds up to an even sportier yet more comfortable driving experience. Technically, the 911 is the epitome of Porsche Intelligent Performance - even lower fuel consumption, even higher performance. This is due in part to the smaller 3.4 litre displacement in the Carrera basic model (yet developing 5 hp more than the 997/II), and to its hybrid steel/aluminum construction, which significantly reduces curb weight. Other innovations include Porsche Dynamic Chassis Control (PDCC) and the world’s first seven-gear manual transmission. The design of the 991 has likewise met with high critical acclaim. With its flat, stretched silhouette, exciting contours, and precisely designed details, the seventh generation of the Porsche 911 Carrera remains unmistakably a 911 that has once again succeeded in redefining the standard for automobile design. It is the best 911 of all time – until the next generation.

Instinctive Desire By Terry Profetto

The 458 Spider ushers in a whole new generation of Ferrari convertibles: an effortless marriage of technology, design and beauty, it is also the first car ever to combine a mid-rear engine with a drop-top. Make no mistake about it, however: this isn’t just any old drop-top, but a retractable folding hard top that delivers both unprecedented in-cabin comfort when closed and unparalleled spider performance. It is an extraordinarily original concept, a completely new solution that once again confirms Ferrari’s unique talent for innovating and astounding without ever losing the identity and core values that have defined its story since 1947. A story that changes with the times but which also continues a glorious tradition founded in great part on fabulous open-top cars designed for hot sunny days: spiders, cabriolets and barchettas. All cars that are spectacularly wonderful to drive because having just the open sky above you as you grip the wheel has a unique and truly unforgettable emotional impact: hearing the engine’s soundtrack, feeling the car’s speed, having the perfumes of the world swirl around you. An impact that’s heightened to the last by nature itself: this is car at its best on coast roads, Alpine passes, rivieras, tree-lined avenues. Roads that lend a very special exhilaration to taking a drop-top out for a spin even at slower speeds. The 458 Spider is a two-seater that brilliantly reflects Maranello’s core strategy of offering the right Ferrari to each individual Ferrarista. It also, however, delivers a whole new set of emotions. You can hit the retract button, drive it top-down, and be enthralled by the distinctive harmonic rumble of its GDI V8 engine without your conversation with your passenger being drowned out, for instance. It also adds a genuine sense of sportiness and power to weekend trips à deux. A clever mix of sounds supplied by the car’s 570 horse power incorporates just the right notes, turning it into music to your ears. Music that acts as a brilliant soundtrack not only to the pleasure of driving a Prancing Horse car but in-car chat. It’s no coincidence either that this very V8 was named International Engine of the Year 2011: it delivers absolutely unprecedented performance for a spider, in fact. However, the 458 Spider has another feature that makes it unique. The key innovation around which its entire concept was crafted is, of course, its aluminum retractable hard top which guarantees in-car comfort that’s far superior to a traditional soft-top. It also has an extraordinarily fast deployment and retraction time, and is far lighter and simpler than any other package of its kind. The Spider shares the 458 Italia’s cutting-edge technologies to offer uncompromising comfort and performance as well as the distinctive thrill of open-top driving. 70 FOCUS of SWFL 2013

It is the ideal choice for owners that want to experience sporty driving on mixed and challenging surfaces but don’t feel the need to constantly push their car to the limit on the track. People who like to add an extra shot of exhilaration to driving to dinner or a day out at the coast. Who want the comfort of ergonomically perfect cabin space in which every last detail has been honed to perfection. A dream drive, in other words. But a very real, drop-top one, to boot. Passion Reinvented

By Mai Yomioto

Starting with the original Quattroporte in 1963, Maserati invented the concept of the luxury sports sedan and the new Quattroporte continues to be the benchmark for high quality engineering, supercar performance and luxury sedan comfort. The sixth-generation Quattroporte delivers a leap forward that not only sets the high-technology tone for Maserati’s upcoming new-model onslaught, but also remains faithful to Maserati’s long history in luxury sports sedans. This exciting progression will make the new Maserati a genuine global player. The future begins today with the all-new Maserati Quattroporte. As the flagship of the Maserati product range, the new Quattroporte is larger, lighter, more luxurious and more practical than the globally-acclaimed car it replaces. The sixth-generation Quattroporte is a significant leap forward that not only sets the high-technology tone for Maserati’s upcoming range of newmodels, but also remains faithful to Maserati’s long history of luxury sports sedans. The powerful and proprietary Maserati engines and the large cabin are at the core of the Quattroporte’s design. Dominated by a long, powerful nose and a concave Trident grille a clear link is created to both the outgoing Quattroporte and the current GranTurismo. 72 FOCUS of SWFL 2013

The newly-developed direct-injection engine family boasts a 3.8-litre V8 and a 3.0-litre V6, both of which are twin-turbocharged, designed by Maserati Powertrain and assembled by Ferrari at their plant in Maranello. All versions come equipped with the latest eight-speed automatic transmission developed with ZF. Even with all of its new technology, the new Quattroporte remains true to Maserati’s roots. Its 530 hp twin turbo V8 makes it not only the fastest four-door Maserati has ever built, but also the most powerful and the most fuel efficient. In direct contrast to its scintillating performance, the V8 Maserati Quattroporte has improved both its fuel consumption and emissions by 20 percent over the outgoing Quattroporte. The 3.8-litre V8 engine sets Maserati’s new performance benchmark by reaching 60 mph in 4.2 seconds and at its peak it delivers more torque than the previous model. The V6 twin turbo Q4 All-Wheel Drive variant delivers similar performance. The “Q4” system is one of the many “firsts” of the new Quattroporte: a system capable of redistributing the torque instantly from full rear wheel drive at higher speeds to a perfectly balanced 50/50 distribution between front and rear wheels when more traction is needed.

The all-new architecture retains the Quattroporte’s traditionally exquisite handling thanks to its near 50:50 weight distribution, a double-wishbone front suspension and a state-of-the-art five-link rear suspension.

ship with cutting-edge technologies that are able to help guarantee outstanding quality by controlling even the tiniest of details. Traditional hand-crafted design continues in the Quattroporte’s cabin, and this has been augmented with even more interior space in all seats and both four- and five-seat layouts. Cabin luxury leaps forward technically, too, with features like the Maserati Touch Control screen, adjustable pedals, reverse cameras and the optional 15-speaker, 1280 Watt Bowers & Wilkins audio system, as well as WLAN-based WiFi. Passion is indeed the middle name of a whole new Maserati Quattroporte and the models that will soon follow her on the market. The passion and state-ofthe-art technology that is at the heart of all the new Maserati engines that will be mounted on the next generation of Maserati products have produced engines that are not only more powerful than ever, or more exciting to drive than ever – bust also more ecofriendly than ever before.”

The new Quattroporte also delivers new standards in quality in every area from design, development, fabrication and process controls. It is produced in a new plant that combines Maserati’s traditions of craftsman-

For 108 years, effortless power delivery has been inherent to Rolls-Royce. This image depicts Wraith’s muscular rear haunches – a visual cue that gives bold expression to Wraith’s promise of dynamism. A sense that this is a car set to move with purpose on its driver’s command. And so to the question of Power. In times gone by, when asked the question, RollsRoyce would simply reply, “Adequate, Sir”. However, for Wraith we feel it right to be a touch more explicit: “More than ample.”

The graceful silhouette gives expression to a bold and thoroughly

contemporary luxury motor car. Flowing lines hint at the extraordinary power and dynamic promise of the most powerful Rolls-Royce in history, yet also highlight design cues that can be traced through the model generations. “We have elegantly captured the essence of one of the greatest technological advancements in motoring design.” Rolls-Royce Wraith evokes the pioneering spirit and lust for adventure that drove company forefather the Honourable Charles Rolls - the consummate gentleman racer. But like Rolls, Wraith will also be steeped in the trappings of luxury and opulence. Wraith is the most powerful Rolls-Royce ever to have played host to the famous Spirit of Ecstasy figurine. It develops 624 bhp, from a 6.6 litre twin-turbo V12, an engine that features direct petrol injection to maximise efficiency and reduce emissions. Should they wish to take advantage of the extraordianary power at their disposal, drivers may choose to be propelled from rest to 60 mph in just 4.4 seconds (0-62 mph, 4.6 seconds) and on to an electronically governed top speed of 155 mph. The sense of scale is illustrated deftly by the power reserve gauge on the fascia. This reveals how much power is available should it be needed – or simply desired – by the driver at any time during a journey. But this is a very different model to those of the last century – and stands alone among Rolls-Royce models today. A wider rear track, longer bonnet, raked glass house and deeply recessed pantheon grille, unite in presenting a truly focused car, a Rolls-Royce with its own unique character. The consummate gentleman’s gran turismo, Wraith stands as a contemporary homage to the era of effortless spacious coupés and grand tourers. A time where pioneers and adventurers became legends and their masterful machines objects of desire. The elegant simplicity, glamour and a sense of excitement has taken inspiration in the creation of Rolls-Royce’s Wraith . Working to create contemporary interpretations of the future, the Wraith is a testament to the breadth of the Rolls-Royce motor cars position as the world’s leading manufacturer of luxury goods. As you would expect from a Princess, the attention to detail and quality of finish throughout her interior is of the highest standard. Large windows fill the main deck with natural light and ensure wonderful views and excellent visibility for the lower helm. The galley is situated aft of the saloon creating a highly sociable atmosphere whether entertaining guests in the cockpit or around the large dining table inside. Ultra-modern Superyacht

By Ewa Stachurska

In 2010 Sunreef Yachts’ design bureau has presented a new range of performing fast cruisers from 70 to 170 feet. The company resolved to explore a new market niche by introducing a sophisticated design line of ultra-modern, high-performance sailing catamarans with environmentally-friendly elements. After having introduced the Sunreef 80 in 2010 and the Sunreef 75 in 2011, Sunreef Yachts is now delighted to unveil the new model from the line, the Sunreef 90 Ultimate, a truly accomplished masterpiece that took more than 6 months for the design team to finalize.

For the first time, the flybridge will not be a typical leisure area but strictly dedicated to sails maneuvering and entirely covered by solar panels with a total area of 54m2 generating 8kW of power which allows for transparent ceilings in the saloon and master cabin. All supported on a honey-comb shaped carbon fiber super structure which becomes the main feature of the interior design. Two helm stations guarantee the skipper easy sailing and great panoramic views. Guests will certainly enjoy the thrill of adventure due to high speeds and the yachts’ impressive size.

The Sunreef 90 ULTIMATE is a very light carbon, high-performance oriented superyacht which light displacement is only 55 T. Her sleek, marine hulls with reversed bow will allow her to enjoy 20+ knots speeds on sails even in light breeze with a safety and stability of a catamaran. A Compact and minimalist superstructure will reduce air resistance. Also the abundance of green energies on board such as solar panels, wind and hydro generators will be of a great support for the generator and will allow silent running at anchor.

The entire superstructure will be made of carbon fiber and glass panels. It will ensure increased illumination thanks to light coming not only through large side windows but also directly from the ceiling. It will house internal saloon with galley in the central part and the master cabin in the front section on the right. It will have a stunning, uncovered view over the sea through the vast glass wall and sliding doors giving access to the private outdoor area protected by two side walls of the superstructure. The private terrace outside

will feature an owner’s spa pool, bar and lounge. Master bathroom will be located down in the port side hull. Left front side of the superstructure will be dedicated to the navigation station. The port side hull will house one double guest cabin with en-suite bathroom and storage and one crew cabin in the aft. The starboard hull will comprise two double guest cabins with en-suite bathrooms and a service room with storage directly connected with the galley up on the main deck. The 20m2 cockpit features a sofa, sun pads and a tender garage on the aft. Fully customized interior design will allow the clients an unlimited range of finish possibilities with the Sunreef’s designer’s expertise and advice. This new concept clearly shows that Sunreef Yachts is a true trendsetter in the luxury catamaran design.

Milestone in Power Catamaran

By Pola Jendraszek

Sunreef Yachts continues growing in the catamaran design sector. Its in-house design office, employing young and talented designers, is located within the shipyard to make the design process smoother and more efficient. Following the introduction of the successful 70 Sunreef Power in 2008, and the launch of the 60 Sunreef Power in July 2012, the company is now introducing a brand new concept of a power catamaran with the 85 Sunreef Power, being another milestone in luxury catamaran design.

www.GerroArt.com (941) 639-6364

One of a kind handmade fashion Photography by Tone Imaging Model Wendy Wil liams

The main idea behind the concept is to stress the superb space offered by catamarans thanks to their large beam, and to arrange this space in a similar way to motor yachts. This means a single large main deck spanning the entire beam, housing dining and lounging areas in both the exterior aft deck and inside the saloon to create a seamless, open space. The generously-sized master cabin is located in the front on the same level. The flybridge will include the helm station and two lounge areas (inside and outside), while the intimate terrace at the front of the main deck will comprise a jet ski with its crane and sun pads. Guest cabins with private bathrooms and crew quarters with direct access to the galley and storage will be located within the hulls.

This space arrangement is certain to please demanding motor yacht clientele who will now be able to enjoy their favourite motor yacht design and layout combined with catamaran advantages such as stability, extensive living and storage space, comfort of cruising, low draught, low fuel consumption, and oceanic range. Design-wise, the 85 Sunreef Power is a modernlooking, streamlined vessel with a curvy line that makes her look like a truly sporty motor yacht. The interior design is light and minimalist with modular furniture on the main deck and the flybridge allowing many configurations, and built-in furniture to be installed within the hulls only. The interior finish and layout come fully customized as on all Sunreef yachts. Wide deck windows will let in plenty of natural light, while the glass elements will fit in perfectly into the modern design. The 85 Sunreef Power’s main deck includes a spacious aft deck with a dining area and lounge with sofas, Jacuzzi and sun pads for 10 guests. It also provides private access to the crew quarters located in the starboard hull, and to the captain’s cabin located aft in the port hull. The main doors lead to an open saloon including a bar, dining area and rest area with sofas, cocktail table and armchairs, as well as a state-of-the-art entertainment system. The area also features two side folding balconies and day head. The owner suite with its private bathroom is located further to the front, with an office area and walk-in wardrobe in front of the beautifully located king size bed providing superb sea views. The saloon also provides direct access to the flybridge via a centrally-positioned glass staircase, and to each hull via two staircases located on the sides. The walk-around flybridge comprises enclosed and open spaces allowing guests to enjoy superb panoramic views in all weather conditions. The internal space includes a fully equipped helm station and a private lounge area, featuring a glass ceiling to let in more light and create the impression of space. The exterior part houses a dining area and sun pads. In addition, the space in front of the outside helm station will be used as a front terrace.

A beach club platform, typical of motor yachts, has been created on the aft. The platform will allow guests to be close to sea level at anchor and low speeds, and provides easy access to all water toys and tender stored in the aft dinghy garage. Naples Real Estate...

A Perspective On Value

By Chip Krespach

Photography by Rick Bethem & Michael McVay

It’s the winter in Naples 1932 when a lone plane descends for a safe landing at the end of Fifth Avenue near the beach. “Lucky” Lindy and wife Ann have stopped by to pick up supplies for their Sanibel retreat from the few businesses that existed at Four Corners and maybe drop in to Club 41. With not much more than the train station, local garage, gas station, dry goods store, Chamber of Commerce and telephone building life was fairly slow in this ostensibly remote and largely undiscovered paradise. But… things have changed. 84 FOCUS of SWFL 2013

Fast forward to 2013, let’s take a look at the revealing demographic evolution. From the estimated “handful” of residents in 1930, Collier County grew from 15,753 people in 1960, to 152,099 in 1990, and to 321,520 in 2010 according to the U.S. Bureau of Census. That’s an amazing 20 fold growth in just 40 years! Yes, Naples has grown since these slower days of yore but without a doubt has retained a small town charm throughout the past 100+ years.

These days, traveling the streets of greater Naples reveals a vast array of things to do and see from music, art, restaurants, performing arts, nature preserves and shopping and of course soft white sand beaches. While the best way to find the very “best of” in the area might be to ask a resident or frequent visitor, a few of the notable ones would have to be the Naples Philharmonic Center, Naples Art Museum, Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary and the shopping and dining experiences along Fifth Avenue and Third Street South. Of course, let’s not forget the Naples Pier at the foot of 12th Street South and the numerous silky sand beaches like Lowdermilk Beach Park in the central area and Vanderbilt Beach to the north to name two. Seemingly a world away from the hustle bustle of everyday life, Naples is a great place to be.

Corresponding to the demographic snap shot, the number and style of homes in SWFL grew as well. The Naples area offers homes in many different styles with greatly varying community amenities to fit any budget or recreation desires. Golf, tennis, boating, fitness facilities, swimming, social centers and more… it’s all here for your enjoyment. From modest condos offered under $200,000 to estate sized single family homes and luxury high rise condos offered at over $10,000,000, Naples has something for virtually everyone. So, whether you currently own a home in the area and are considering upsizing or downsizing or you’re just here on a visit and find yourself dreaming of the possibilities, let’s take a look at the type of homes your real estate dollar can buy courtesy of Downing-Frye Realty, Inc. and Gulf Coast International Properties. continued on page 91...

Inventory levels continue to decline while activity remains high and with prices arguably at the “bottom” or even beginning to see slight appreciation, the time to consider change is now. Don’t know where to begin? Selecting a home seems to come down to two main questions, the answers to which, form the basis for a good decision. 1. What type of community and amenities do I want? 2. What type of home and features do I want? While I am not trying to over simplify, the answer to these two questions will help you narrow your search to a manageable list so you can enjoy the process. So many clients tell me “You know, we have been waiting, planning and dreaming of owning a home in SWFL for years. And now it is a reality.” You can realize your dream too. Dream Oaks Camp By Bre Jones Mulock Photography by Rob Knight

Tucked beneathe the shade of towering oak trees and serenaded with streams of laughter, lies a peaceful utopia where kids who use wheelchairs ride horses, children with visual impairments sweep paint brushes across masterpieces and patients with cancer swap doctor’s appointments for a canoe trip down the Manatee River. Dream Oaks Camp, offering an exceptional camping experience for children with special needs and chronic illnesses ages 7 – 17, stretches out across several pristine acres in Manatee County and serves as the only camp in the Tampa Bay Area offering a permanent site for residential, day and weekend camping programs throughout the year for these children. Rumbling down the dirt road to the check-in center, most children can barely wait to leap out of their cars and bid farewell to their parents. “Usually Marty has to be coaxed out of the truck when we go places,” says Daniel, a Bradenton parent. “When I pull into the camp parking lot and park, Marty is opening up the door before I shut the engine off. A smile covers his face from the time he spots the first person. When I pick him up, he’s still wearing that same smile.” Dashing up to greet friends and loved counselors, campers can let go of school, treatment and routine at Dream Oaks, which has served more than 4,000 individuals during the 12 years it has welcomed campers. Seven barrier-free cabins dot the campus. Sunlight filters through the trees setting butterflies aglow. Low flames crackle from a firepit where the nostalgic, sweet scent of roasting marshmellows warms the afternoon air. The camp has blossomed as a living dream for Bradenton attorney Eddie Mulock, a triple-transplant survivor with a wicked sense of humor and a self-professed weakness for brightly-colored neckties.

Mulock could not erase the images of the children he saw battling illnesses and adversity sheltered behind hospital walls. After surviving a heart transplant in 1995, Mulock – who later underwent both kidney and liver transplants as well—wondered when these children could shut out the treatments and therapy to enjoy the carefree musings of being a kid. His ponderings bloomed into a life mission. Barely out of the hospital himself, Mulock formed in 1996 the Foundation for Dreams, a non- profit organization that funds his creation Dream Oaks Camp. In August 2000, the Foundation for Dreams formed a collaborative partnership, which allowed the Foundation to build Dream Oaks Camp on several acres of Camp Flying Eagle, thereby utilizing existing facilities while focusing on renovating and building new facilities. With colorful pinwheels spinning at the entrance, Mulock’s dream came true in 2001 as Dream Oaks welcomed its first summer campers, providing day camp services to 56 children. Through summer and year-round weekend programs, Dream Oaks serves more than 600 individuals a year who enjoy independence, grow a greater self-confidence, strengthen activites of daily living and life skills, engage in activities with other children in an inclusive, barrier-free environment and provide respite services to the parents and cargivers. In addition, last year they provided nearly $100,000 in partial or full scholarships to families in need of financial assitance. Dream Oaks Camp recently collaborated with The Children’s Cancer Center, The Center for Building Hope and Suncoast Kids Place out of Tampa to create two new weekend camps for families. continued on page 94... The “F.L.I.G.H.T” Children’s Cancer Center Family Camp is a weekend camp for children who have recently been diagnosed with cancer and “Camp Healing Heart” is a bereavement camp for families who have lost a child to cancer and are still needing support services. They are also partnering with Jewish Family Children’s Services and have added three weekend camps that serve children affected by substance abuse in the home. In addition, Dream Oaks Camp programs have expanded to include a Young Adult Camp for individuals ages 18-30 to fill the much needed gap in services.

“Zachary has been ‘special’ since he was born,” says Leslie, a parent from Orlando. “At Dream Oaks Camp he isn’t. He’s just like every other kid. He actually becomes a leader and initiates activities instead of being a follower.” As a camp session draws to a close, the contagious smiles from the first day roll into belly laughs flowing from the dining hall. Inside, a camper/counselor talent show plays out and kids and adults alike beam with happiness. They have played hard – riding horses, swimming in a specially designed splash pool, creating art, music and plays to name a few activities. One camper clutches his counselor, burying his face in the counselor’s lap. He doesn’t want to leave, let the fun end. “To me, this camp means an experience my son would not otherwise have,” says Marty’s dad Daniel. “It means a feeling of security, knowing he is cared for and watched over by good, loving people.”

During camp sessions, an intricate tapestry of life emerges: children embracing their carefree youth, young adult counselors growing into strong, nurturing people and parents, who often don’t get a break all year, a chance to spend time with a spouse or friends. 94 FOCUS of SWFL 2013

Wa i ne

Measures Twice, Cuts Once By Gina Battle

The question is often asked but seldom easily answered. How does one measure the success of a man? The answer is simple in the eyes of Mr. Waine Hicks, General Contractor and owner of Cabinets Extraordinaire complete with a premier kitchen and bathroom designer showroom located in Sarasota, FL. He doesn’t do it alone this is a family business which including his wife, Sharon, and approximately ten employees. Mr. Hicks poignantly stated the bottom line, “Business is what you make it!” You’ve gotta put it together to make it fly. You’ve gotta make it work.” He noted that with this attitude, business is picking up every day. There are not a lot of people who do what we do at the success rate that have. Everything they have in their exquisite showroom is handmade, custom designed and made in American, with the exception of an Amish Armoire made in Canada. By the looks of the showroom one would think it was made exclusively for high-end designers, however, upon you are made to feel right at home. Their clientele are individual families, to designers, to subcontractors, and the Cabinets Extraordinaire is there to create ideas and fulfill dreams for comfortable living while creating beautiful home aesthetics. There have been many occasions a customer suggests something she thinks she wants aesthetically but is unaware how it will actually fit into her lifestyle or fit into the configuration of the structure itself. This is where Mr. Hicks’s strategy is exercised. He says, “The secret to success in construction is incorporating the client’s desire with what will actually work.” He cares so much about the client that he will not allow them to be misguided or be unrealistic in their design choices. It is essential in his line of work as a general contractor to discreetly have the client feel as though they are making the right decisions for what will be their living environment for years to come. The importance of consultations and follow-up visits are immeasurable when you are making someone’s house a home. “If it ain’t broke don’t fix it. There’s no real trick to construction. It’s never changed!” he said masterfully. 96 FOCUS of SWFL 2013

Doing things by the need, not by the book The Hicks family’s spiritual journey is purposeful. The mission is to offer a service to the general public. Hicks, holds every degree, advanced or otherwise, possible from the Home Builder’s Association. It’s a lot of hard work. The company works diligently incorporating the American’s with Disabilities Act (ADA); Certified Aging in Place, and the Veterans Administration. He makes it a point to put himself in the circumstance of the other person to try to evaluate their need, if at all possible. For example, he shared a story about receiving a call from a relative of a disabled veteran. After going to the home, he asked if he could sit in the wheelchair in order to visually and physically ascertain what the specific needs would be to bring comfort to the vet. “You cannot understand another man until you have walked a mile in his moccasins – quoting “an old Native American adage.” Mr. Hicks goes as far as to use two knee socks and two tennis balls taken from his briefcase, placing them on his hands and walks the home to see if he is able to open doors, turn on water faucets, or turn knobs. The answer turns out to be an emphatic – NO! He adamantly exclaims, “Every person has different needs. You’ll never find a carbon copy of a human being. I don’t care how long or how hard you look there are no two people that do the same thing, and there are so many things that are involved with it.” He, further inquiries if the person is left or right handed, which inevitably make a significant difference if you are forced to utilize a hand you were not accustomed to using before a disability, which also includes the inability to use your hands due to arthritis. Additionally, Mr. Hicks shared that integrity, freedom, and independence are necessary key components he keeps in mind as it relates to Cabinets Extraordinaire and his personal approach to their life’s mission. It’s all about the client’s he serves. “You

have to refresh their integrity, give them their freedom and help to recreate their independence. If they (dependent aging or disabled people) are able to take a shower due to his meticulous planning, they will take one every day because it’s more accommodating. The Veteran’s Administration calls Hicks with special needs clients in mind, and Mr. Hicks figuratively answers the call. “You can never harvest a product if you didn’t sow the seeds. You’re only going to reap what you sow.” Hicks just remodel a vet’s home that was in dire need of repairs and modifications. It was a tear down job which included a new kitchen and bathroom renovation – a $60,000 value, at no charge to the vet. “It’s not about the dollar. It’s about the service,” he said proudly. “When people are appreciated they do very well regardless of the challenges.” A successful man gives from his heart and with sincerity in servicing the community. This is not just once a year when he assumes the role as the “original Santi Claus for 150 disabled kids at Christmas,” he really did say “Santi Claus,” he gives of himself freely and willingly throughout the year. As a child in Southern Virginia, inspired by his grandmother, his everything, Mr. Hicks wanted to be a country doctor. Instead, he stuck with where his heart guided him. Just as one might imagine he has the inclination of a country doctor giving at all times to those in need. Mr. Hicks seems to have mastered the measure of a successful man, indeed.

Color Alive comes

By Lindsey Glowa Photography by Jean Luc Petit

One season, 7 paintings, 7 lines of clothing: just a few words are needed to describe in broad outline the fundamental concept of Aventures des Toiles. An open window to the inner world of the artist, each painting is a source of inspiration rather than a model. Never just copied, it fuses with the garment to give birth to a new and independent creation. At the beginning, the painting is chosen for its visual universe, its identity and its dominant colors. The creative team allows itself to soak up the full effects. Lines and colors are reinterpreted by a successive choice of materials, forms and prints. From an entire painting, sometimes just one motif is used, drawn out from the canvas like a thread off a reel. Alternatively, it is the colors that free themselves of the shackles of the form to invade the fabric and become a new backcloth. Much more than a simple imitation, this breaking down of the painting enables it to be reformed in all its richness and uniqueness. Once released from the imagination of the stylists at Aventures des Toiles, the garment is subjected to the trials of the real world in the hands of designers and prototypes. Forms and colors are transferred onto paper and then passed into the expert hands of the couturiers. Very soon, the garment is ready to be worn: passing from the world of art to the world of the living... Aventures Des Toiles comes to life in a beautiful collection of clothing!

fashionable foundation solutions for their unique bust sizes. Feeling left out when it came to beautiful yet affordable foundation options for a full-bust and knowing they were not alone, they set out on a quest to marry fashion and function. She quickly advanced up the ladder becoming the Intimate Apparel, Denim and Sportswear Buyer accountable for nearly $50 million in annual sales. Kelly’s accomplishments included elevating the brand profile and sales of the intimate’s category. In addition to increased on-air sales, Kelly also increased the .Com sales penetration in the intimate’s category through key item strategies, specialty product procurement, and expanded assortments. Mary’s accomplishments included developing product and sales presentation strategies to enhance the growth of HSN’s number one intimate’s brand leading Mary to annual company-wide award recognition. firm-brilliantly taking her proven track record for procuring trend-right seasonal collections, expertise of understanding the inner workings of multimedia retailing, and her knack of executing the vision of celebrities and designers. Traveling extensively to NYC, LA, Las Vegas, South America and Europe, she has managed multiple apparel, footwear, accessories, and intimates brands for celebrities and designers. In March of 2012 both Kelly and Mary found themselves at a place in life where they were ready to develop the brand they have always dreamt of wearing. See while they were living “full-lives,” they were also carrying “full-busts.” The irony was not lost on them that they were two women who have worked as intimates buyers, created intimates lines for others and had access to every brand on the market yet still could not find anything to fit their fuller-busts that did not look like a relic from the past…or as they would say "a harness." You know what they say, "If you can't find it…make it yourself." So make it they did! Their goal was to create foundation and sleepwear that answered their search for fun, fashionable and affordable product with support and function for their full-busts. With Curveturiere, they want to give women a brand that is unique and diverse with as much color and flare as they live their life. They also want to build a community to share information; intimates advice, fashion tips, healthy lifestyle ideas and personal stories. So the movement has begun, fashion and color for all! As Kelly and Mary always say... Who wants to live life in neutral?™

Katie Holmes new Venture "Katie inspired us by gracefully evolving from an actress to a multi-faceted artist, designer and style icon," says Joan Malloy , President/CEO of Alterna Haircare. "Alterna has been haircare's 'best kept secret' for years, but that is about to change. We're confident that adding Katie's natural beauty, gorgeous hair and creative instincts to our state-of-the-art, results-driven haircare collection will be a game-changing combination." Launched in 1997 and now owned by TSG Consumer Partners, Alterna has been recognized by beauty and industry insiders for cutting-edge, professional formulations that are 'free of' harsh chemicals and formulated with globally-sourced, often sustainable, and organic ingredients. "I'm really proud to be a part of this company – not only because the products are incredible, but because their 'accessible luxury' and 'free of' philosophy really speaks to me," says Katie. "I love that Alterna uses natural and organic ingredients and stays away from harsh chemicals like sulfates and parabens. It's good for my hair and good for the earth, so I feel good using it." Over the course of her multi-year relationship with Alterna, Ms. Holmes will be sharing her creative and consumer insights to help the brand continue to grow and expand its devout consumer following around the world, as well as inspire salon and retail partners. "In many ways, Katie is the epitome of the beauty and health-conscious, stylish, discerning consumer we hope to reach," says Malloy. "We are so fortunate to be able to tap into her perspective – not only creatively, but as a busy professional, mother and woman on the go." Consumers will get their first glimpse at the partnership with the Spring 2013 integrated marketing campaign, which will appear in March women's beauty, lifestyle and salon trade publications. This will be the largest ad campaign for the company since its inception; the campaign invites consumers to experience the "transformational" power of Alterna products "after just one use" via product sampling. "When I first used Alterna, I knew there was something special about their products because of how much healthier, shinier and smoother my hair looked and felt after just one use," says Katie. "If I had to pick one word to describe what happens to my hair when I use Alterna, it would have to be transformation." Regarding the potential for future creative and new product collaborations between Holmes and the brand, Malloy says, "Stay tuned! Katie is now part of the family, and with a great partnership like this, there are no limits."

Speaking with

Jim Jordan

I understand you have an artistic background before photography, what was it? I started out as a celebrity hair and makeup artist working with the biggest models, actors and photographers throughout the world. The catalyst that started you in photography was it something you always wanted to do or was it a fortunate accident? I had no idea I would ever be a photographer. It was completely unexpected and came out of nowhere. I started a career doing hair and makeup for the biggest models, actors and photographers around the world. I began taking photos of the models and actresses whose hair and makeup I would do out of frustration that the photographers weren’t shooting the women to look as beautiful as they could look. One of the clients I did hair and makeup for named Emily was the owner of J Crew and she confronted me one day saying that her models told her that I was an amazing photographer and that she wanted to see my images. I was terrified but decided to show her and she fell in love with my images and asked me to shoot her next campaign for J Crew. 116 FOCUS of SWFL 2013

By Terri Profetto

How would you describe your artistic style? My artistic style is bright, crisp, airy, clean, open, fresh and balanced. What inspires you? I am inspired by youth, nature, the desert, beautiful things, beautiful locations, beautiful people, my team and my friends. You photographed a number of celebrities, who was the most fun and want did she/he do? I just shot Kelly Osbourne last week and she is not only beautiful but one of the funniest people I’ve ever met. She burned her bottom on some bricks when I asked her to sit down for a shot and she kept everyone on set laughing the whole time. It was a blast. Jim, what was your most memorable moment in your career? The most memorable part of my career was probably when I first ever started working with J Crew and getting flown out to Hawaii for an amazing two-week shoot.

What have you learned over the years from shooting? I have learned to always have an open mind and remember that there is always room for growth. What or who would you say influences your work? My influences include Herb Ritts, Steven Meisel, Peter Lindbergh, Bruce Webber, Patrick Demarchelier, and Helmut Newton You really like giving back to the creative community, what’s the inter feeling you have in doing so? I like to give back to the creative community in many ways. I offer workshops and participate in guest speaking engagements to give those who are interested in learning about the industry a first hand glance. I also work with companies I believe in as sponsors and help to promote their brand to creatives in need of what they offer. Last but certainly not least, I participate in outreach programs for the homeless including homeless karaoke and volunteer work at The Dream Center in Los Angeles. What do you do on your off time? In my spare time I like to surf, skate and snowboard. I also love to discover new talent and groom them to package them up to send to agencies around the world for representation. What does the future hold for Jim? There is a lot I am planning for my future. I have a production company that is rapidly growing where I represent models, actors, musicians and other talent. I am building an online university to teach those who cannot afford private photography school about every aspect of the business. I am also developing a cosmetic company.

Spring into

Style! By Vanessa Lausch

Evolving your own style requires attention to fabric, fit, color, pattern, and detail. However, women with a true fashion sense also know these three simple steps. Step 1: Know your strengths and play them up. Whether you have sexy shoulders, a beautiful chest, great cleavage, or toned legs, there is something about your body that you love. You should play up and highlight this feature in every outfit you wear. Shine, bright or light colors, fabric details, or skin all tend to draw eyes toward you. Use these elements to your benefit in every outfit to showcase your good features and make yourself look stylish. Step 2: Find your distinctive look. People will tend to judge you and form opinions about you based upon your appearance, so give them a taste of who you really are. Perhaps you have a certain accessory or color you love to wear. You can begin adding a small, distinctive touch of that color or accessory to every outfit. Or, if you love a certain style of clothing, such as sexy pantsuits or flirty dresses, try wearing some variation of your favorite outfit every day. Your style will not be boring; it will simply be true to who you are. Step 3: Never underestimate the flattering power of confidence and good posture. Standing up straight and letting your shoulders fall down and back will do wonderful things for your appearance. Good posture can make you appear taller, thinner, more elegant, and more graceful. It will also make you feel more confident, and, as a rule, confident people naturally draw attention and admiration, regardless of what they are wearing. These simple steps are guaranteed to turn a growing knowledge of fit and fashion into a true sense of style.

Rotorealism

of an Artist

By Ann Gordon

Barbara as a Blonde

If you have not yet seen Michael Beauchemin’s artwork then you have not seen all there is to art. Michael’s work is best described as unique and nontraditional with a splash of autobiographical inspiration and a pinch of psychedelic flavor. Michael describes his own work as “semi-autobiographical; an examination of real life events rendered non-referential, as time and space is skewed in order to illustrate simultaneous observations and emotional reactions to the subject matter.” Others have described his artwork as a marriage of photorealism with altered states of consciousness. The truth is his work is an anomaly. Why? Because of the nostalgic thread throughout many of his pieces, and we all relate to nostalgia at some point in our lives we have had a longing for the past or the “good old days.” But is this really true? Do we really long for the past and was the past that perfect? This is the irony and these are the conversations that Michael Beauchemin’s work explores that lead him to the coinage of “Rotorealism,” where reality rotates around dream miscalculations. Michael’s work presents juxtaposition; both thematic and on canvas as his colors are fierce in contrast but as the same time there is a unique synthesis and control. Born in Connecticut, Michael was inspired by his father who was also an artist and a draftsman. Michael remembers at an early age sitting in front of the TV drawing his favorite characters from Saturday morning cartoons. As early as twelve he participated in his first art show in Mystic, Connecticut. He graduated from high school and was awarded with the Rufus Rose Scholarship and attended Massachusetts College of Art. He later moved to Fort Lauderdale and worked for an ad agency. His first body of work consisted of six-foot high canvases depicting Frankenstein’s monster and bride, and a montage of sci-fi horror movie images outlined in menacing black shadows. Michael has received national recognition which provided opportunities to meet Bob Rauschenberg, James Rosenquist, Peter Max and Jim Dine. Michael also met Elton John who once purchased one of his pieces. Michael, who is usually gregarious, for the first time said he was tongue-tied. Subsequent art shows in Atlanta, Los Angeles, and Santa Monica afforded him an opportunity to meet other celebrities. Michael’s work gives us an exploration of many things; truth, surrealism, inspiration and humor. He now resides in Southwest Florida where there is increasing interest in the arts and so much community involvement for special events that enrich everyone’s life.

Three

Generations Plein Air Gruppe Painters of

By Kathleen Taylor

Emile Gruppe (Father) - Dock at River House, 1950 - oil on linen - 30 x 36 inches - Description: St. Lucie River, Florida

Charles Gruppé (Grandfather) Langor gouache 10 x 14 inches

Following Footsteps features oil paintings from three generations of plein air painters. Artists have always gathered together in their studios, in cafés or other places to share ideas, discuss projects, help and learn from each other. The give and take of sharing often grows into life-long friendships with artists influencing and encouraging each other. Family members also encourage other members of their family to study and pursue art, but rarely do we see three generations of successful artists working in the same genre. Charles, Emile and Robert Gruppé are one such example. Charles Gruppé was a Canadian-born painter who resided in Rochester, New York and made extended painting trips to Holland. His son Emile Gruppé was a famous artist and teacher who divided his time between painting on the Cape Ann peninsula in Gloucester, Massachusetts and the beaches and waterways of Florida. Emile’s son Robert Gruppé has followed in his father’s footsteps; traveling between Naples and Massachusetts and maintaining his father’s Gloucester studio space as an art gallery. This exhibition reveals three generations of the Gruppé family through their plein air paintings.

Robert Gruppe (Son) The Back Shore, Gloucester oil on linen 20 x 24 inches

Twenty two Emile Gruppé’s paintings in the exhibition were originally owned by Ralph Evinrude and Frances Langford whom he met and befriended in the late 1950s. Ralph Evinrude was the Chairman of Outboard Marine Corporation and his father Ole invented the first commercially viable outboard motor. Frances Langford was a singer and actress famous for her radio work with Rudy Vallee, Dick Powell and others as well as films, television and U.S.O. tours with Bob Hope. Following Footsteps will be the first public display of paintings from the Evinrude and Langford Collection. The lushly rendered paintings depict moods and moments on the expansive beach and bay front estate Langford owned in Jensen Beach, Florida as well as tropical waterscapes of the islands Evinrude and Langford visited aboard their 118 foot yacht the Chanticleer. Robert Gruppé and his wife Jennifer live in Gloucester, Massachusetts where they operate the Gruppé Gallery in the Rocky Neck Art Colony. The gallery was formerly Emile Gruppé’s studio. Each of the three Gruppé’s worked in the studio at one time or another.

Exhibited in the Frederick O. Watson and Elizabeth & William Barrick Galleries. The von Liebig Art Center • 585 Park Street • Naples, FL 34102 • 239.262.6517 www.naplesart.org

A (BRUSH) STROKE OF GENIUS ARTISTS SHARE WHAT INSPIRES THEM

By Bob Buchsbaum

CEO, Blick Art Materials

When it comes to art, inspiration — or the quest to find it — is a perspiration-producing exercise for three out of four artists (76 percent). The difficulty, they revealed, is inspiration’s tendency to come in waves. That’s the main conclusion from a survey of 500 artists commissioned by Blick Art Materials in November 2012. What’s an artist to do? About one-third (32 percent) habitually monitor their surroundings in an attempt to “ignite that spark.” One in five (23 percent) hunt for thought-provoking perspectives. And a lucky 16 percent don’t find inspiration at all — it finds them. In response to these survey results, Blick — the country’s largest and oldest supplier of fine art materials — has announced its “Inspiration Series.” This series of online and offline events is designed to connect artists with experts and ideas to motivate their next masterpiece. No matter their skill level, artists are always seeking inspiration for their next project. Blick understands that and is dedicated to providing artists with fresh ideas. Blick believes the world would be a better place with more artists, and has a long legacy of supporting them. Founded in 1911, the company is in its third generation of family ownership. Despite its 100-year-old roots, however, Blick is in tune with where artists and hobbyists are today, and has an active presence on Facebook, Twitter, and Pinterest. For its first Inspiration Series event, Blick hosted a live Facebook chat in January 2013 with renowned professional artist Lori McNee, dubbed a Twitter Powerhouse by The Huffington Post. The hour-long chat entitled “The Blank Canvas” was full of helpful tips for finding and cultivating inspiration. “When I go ‘blank’ or need to refuel my own artistic inspiration, I enjoy surfing images on the Web,” McNee said during the chat. “I love to use Pinterest as a way to bookmark the sites and photos that inspire me. But when I really feel really bored or ‘stuck,’ I often will try something new!” 144 FOCUS of SWFL 2013

Almost every artist Blick surveyed (98 percent) is open to exploring new techniques and materials with a bit of direction. In fact, when asked what inspires them, artists ranked “discovering new methods” higher than music, friends, and travel. Thirty-nine percent of artists reported that trying new things is one of the best ways to improve creativity. Of course, trying new things presents its own challenges, both logistical and psychological. McNee encouraged artists to press forward. “It takes courage to try something new,” she said. The survey also revealed artists’ thoughts about the best thing about being an artist. Top answers included having a creative outlet (29 percent) and following one’s passion (28 percent). The hardest thing? Making time for one’s craft (35 percent). McNee addressed this, too, encouraging artists to create a structured plan for growth. “Create an action plan by writing down your goals and reviewing them often,” she said. “Visualize where you would like to see yourself and your art career in one year, then in five years. Think big, but start small. Small decisions are important for your long-term success.” For its next “Inspiration Series” events, Blick will host free art classes in select stores across the country, taught by established professional artists and designed to give beginners and experts alike a chance to learn new things, meet other artists, and ask questions. Blick Art Materials is one of the largest and oldest providers of art supplies in the United States. Its products cater to the full spectrum of artists — from the youngest child ready to scribble with his or her first crayon to well-known, gallery-represented professionals. The company’s extensive selection, competitive prices, and superior customer service make Blick the choice for professional and amateur artists, art educators, architects, designers, students, hobbyists, or anyone requiring quality art materials for work or pleasure.

From one man to a family legacy

By Alexandra Cook

How long has it been since you’ve tasted a true original in the spirits world … the brand that actually created a category … the one all the others have sought to emulate? One of those originals, the one that created the Sambuca category, Molinari Sambuca Extra, continues to maintain its superior style and taste even as other companies try to emulate its delicious, aromatic elegance. This singular liqueur was the brainchild of Angelo Molinari, an Italian spirits merchant, back in 1945. The recipe Angelo developed continues to be a closely guarded secret, impossible for pretenders to copy. Molinari quickly became the darling of the jet set during La Dolce Vita, the 1950’s era, when the chicest met the richest and most famous on the Via Veneto and Sophia Loren battled Gina Lollobrigida for the title of most luscious Italian bombshell. It’s said that, back then, Frank Sinatra drank only two spirits: Jack Daniels before dinner and Molinari after. An enterprising salesman, who gifted Mr. Sinatra with case, after learning of his affection for the brand, was the recipient of an effusive thank-you from “Old Blue Eyes”, a letter the Molinari family still has in their vaults today. The Molinari Sambuca Extra brand became a sign of quality in Italian restaurants in the U.S. Today, it remains the best-selling Sambuca around the world and especially in Italy where it’s often consumed as an accompaniment to espresso, called “café corretto,” or straight up in a small snifter topped with three coffee beans, a symbol of the Holy Trinity as well as health, happiness and prosperity. Molinari Sambuca Extra began like many worldwide sensations, humbly, with just one person and his exceptional expertise and unfaltering determination. That one person was Angelo Molinari, and as this classic family-run spirits company undergoes a renaissance in the United States in the present, the story starts with his beginning in Italy many decades ago. After working as a spirits merchant in Northern Lazio during the 1920’s, Angelo was inspired to use his experience to develop his own product and company. In 1945 in Civitavecchia, Italy, Angelo, already a well-respected mixologist, created what was to become one of Italy’s most celebrated institutions: a smooth, full-bodied liqueur he proudly named Molinari Sambuca. The spirit quickly attracted a huge following during the glitzy years of Italy in the 1950’s and 60’s, and its remarkable flavor grew to attract a large following around the world.

In 1967, alongside his father Angelo and brothers Mafalda and Marcello, Antonio Molinari joined the team. The following year also proved notable for the company - in 1968, Molinari Sambuca was declared “Extra” in an official statement made by Italian Supreme Court Judge Peruzzini. This prestigious denomination praised that its ingredients were of the highest quality and distinguished Molinari from its competitors. While some include the word “Extra” on their label, Molinari Sambuca Extra is the only brand with this honor authenticated by an official judgment. Angelo passed away in 1975, leaving his legacy and company in the hands of his family, including Angelo’s grandchildren, Inge, Angelo and Mario (now the International Sales & Development Director at Molinari Italia), who joined the business in 2000. Like any true family secret, the blend of ingredients that Angelo spent years perfecting for Molinari Sambuca Extra has been passed down from generation to generation, with only one member of each entrusted with its formula. The Molinari brand grew in 1999 when they became a shareholder in "Lemoncelli di Capri, S.r.L." Fittingly, Limoncello di Capri is also an original. First created in the 1980’s, it was the first to claim the “limoncello” name now used by many others. In 2003, Molinari launched Molinari Caffè, introducing an inspired flavor variation to their classic Sambuca Extra. Producing just a few bottles at a time in the beginning, the company opened its first semi-industrial plant in 1959, followed by a second in 1964 and a third in 1975. While the operations continue to increase in size and improve in technology, the product stays true to its artisanal heritage and family roots. Today, Angelo’s children and grandchildren maintain the Molinari legacy with the kind of care that can only come from a family-run business. They continue to adhere to the original recipe created by Angelo that has made Molinari Sambuca the best-selling liqueur in Italy and the most asked for Sambuca in the world. With the company growing every year in terms of value and volume, Molinari’s popularity and prominence in Italy remain unparalleled.

Celebrate National Licorice Day on April 12th with Molinari Sambuca Extra – the top-selling spirit in Italy. Imbibe on this unique holiday like an Italian by adding a splash of this anise-based liqueur to your morning coffee or afternoon espresso, creating the Caffé Corretto. Enjoy after dinner straight up in a small snifter topped with three coffee beans, a symbol of the Holy Trinity as well as health, happiness and prosperity. No matter how you sip it, this sweet and strong drink will have you celebrating this one of a kind holiday the Italian way – living “la dolce vita!”

Caffé Corretto 1 oz of Molinari Sambuca Extra 2 ½ oz of your favorite espresso Directions: Prepare espresso using an espresso machine or stove top maker. Stir in Molinari Samubca Extra and enjoy. www.molinari.it 146 FOCUS of SWFL 2013

Art

of Heidi Schmitz

In her hometown, Munich, Heidi Schmitz is a highly reputed member of the arts community and has impressed with many solo exhibitions. In 2009 and 2012, she had exhibits in the Orangerie, an old green house that has been turned into a famous exhibition hall in the English Garden in the center of Munich. Heidi`s painting history goes back to the early eighties when she started with paintings on silk and porcelain. She has studied with various European artists, such as Bernhard Vogel, Gesine Frölich and Alexander Jeanmaire in Germany, Austria, Italy and the US. Heidi works in a variety of media, from watercolors to acrylics to mixed media. In the mid 1980s Heidi did her first watercolor paintings, which were very realistic and detailed. Now her paintings go far beyond classical aquarelles, with different varnishes and glazes. Often she uses watercolor pens and ink. She says, “Watercolor paintings are for me an excellent means to express and portray atmospheres and emotions.” Thus, her aquarelles transport feelings and impressions rather than a photographic reproduction of an object. In order to achieve these effects she sprinkles and splashes with colors; she blurs objects while highlighting others. Her watercolors depict European landscapes, cityscapes, and still life’s.

Heidi teaches art (acrylic and watercolor painting) in her studio in Munich as well as at the Peoples University of Munich. She also offers a lease program for her paintings under special circumstances. The work of Heidi Schmitz is on display at the SBDAC from March 1 through March 28. There will be an invitation-only charity event on Tuesday, March 12, 2013. On that occasion Mayor Randy Henderson, Jr. of Fort Myers will auction one of the paintings for the benefit of the SBDAC. The event is supported by the Miami German Consul General, the Southwest Florida Honorary Consul of Germany and the Southwest Florida European American Network.

In the year 2000, Heidi Schmitz found a new passion in acrylic painting. “The magic of abstract painting is to work with many different techniques and materials (e.g. coffee, tar or wax…). My ambition is to combine and unify colors and forms in one painting in order to stress the tension and fascination of the painting, ”Heidi says. Several layers of materials and forms provide the paintings with an extraordinary depth and expressive power. Each painting has its own center of gravity that is counterbalanced by lighter colors or forms. In the last 2 years Heidi has further enlarged the versatility of her art by painting on acrylic glass and dibond plates (the material commonly used for traffic signs).

POACHED PEARS in SPICED PORT SYRUP

DESSERT MAKES 6 SERVINGS

WINE SUGGESTION: AGED PORT

Individual pears in a beautiful garnet-colored red wine syrup have become a winter dessert classic. Firm-ripe Bosc pears are the best choice, as they hold their shape well during cooking. You can buy mulling spices in The Fresh Market spice section, or make your own. 6 firm-ripe Bosc pears 1 lemon, halved 1 tablespoon mulling spices (see note)

One 750-ml bottle tawny or ruby port 1/3 cup packed light brown sugar Vanilla ice cream, for serving

Peel pears, leaving stems intact. Rub exposed flesh with lemon halves. Choose a large nonreactive saucepan (stainless steel or enameled cast iron, but not uncoated aluminum or cast iron) just large enough to hold all of pears on their sides. Wrap mulling spices in a square of rinsed cheesecloth and tie into a packet with a piece of kitchen twine. Bring port, brown sugar, and spice packet (without pears) to a simmer in saucepan over medium heat, stirring to dissolve sugar. Arrange pears on their sides in saucepan. Reduce heat to medium-low and cover tightly. Simmer, occasionally turning pears in syrup for even coloring, until pears are just tender when pierced with tip of a small, sharp knife, about 50 minutes. Using a slotted spoon, transfer to a shallow ceramic or glass baking dish. Increase heat to high and bring port wine mixture to a boil. Cook until reduced to 1 cup, about 15 minutes. Discard spice packet. Pour syrup over pears and let cool. Cover tightly with plastic wrap. Refrigerate, occasionally turning pears in syrup, until chilled, at least 2 hours or up to 2 days. Place each pear in a shallow soup bowl and divide syrup evenly over pears. Add a scoop of ice cream to each and serve at once, with spoons. MULLING SPICE BLEND: Use one 2-inch cinnamon stick, 2 star anise pods, and

⁄2 teaspoon each whole cloves, allspice berries, and dried orange peel.

Mixing and Mashing with: Of course everyone has their own opinion on what makes the “best guacamole,” but George Duran’s recipe for Crunchy Herbed Guacamole stands out amongst the crowd for two very delicious reasons. What George’s version has is the magic crunch factor, stemming from a fresh medley of diced radishes and chives, taking texture to another level. Also, George’s recipe is prepared authentically, as it would be in a traditional Latin household by means of a Granite Molcajete (he uses one from IMUSA), to mince and mix ingredients. Not only does this method make a mean Guac, but it makes for a rich, festive presentation for parties, small get-together’s, or family dinner night.

Chef George Duran and IMUSA’s Recipe for Crunchy Herbed Guacamole Ingredients: 2 Ripened avocados, halved and pitted 3 Small red radishes, diced ¼ Cup finely chopped cilantro ¼ Cup snipped fresh chives Kosher salt or table salt, to taste Juice of ½ lime Bottled Chipotle Hot Pepper Sauce (optional) Preparation: Scoop avocado flesh (for best results, inside an IMUSA Molcajete) and add the cilantro, chopped chives, lime juice, and chipotle hot pepper sauce. Gently mash with until the desired consistency is reached. Fold in diced radishes and season with salt to taste. FOCUS of SWFL 2013 151

Has Society Become a Madhouse

?

By Ginny Grimsley

“Insane” has a clear meaning when we can look at it next to “sane” in the real world. Unfortunately, that has become more and more difficult to do, says Mike Bartos, former chief of staff at a state psychiatric hospital for the criminally insane. “It’s not just because the media rely so much now on bizarre behavior to entertain their audiences,” says Bartos, author of “BASH” – Bay Area State Hospital – , a fast-paced tongue-in-cheek novel that stems from his decades of experience as a mental health-care professional. “Take a look at what have become the ‘normal’ problems in modern America – some of them could be textbook examples of psychological dysfunction.” Case – or rather, cases – in point: • Obesity epidemic: Denial, compulsion, addiction and sublimation are just a few mechanisms at work in the psychology of a largely obese population. Sublimation is the mature defense activity perpetrated when socially unacceptable impulses, such as sexuality, are redirected, in this case to the consumption of salty, fatty and sugary food. With more than two thirds of the U.S. population either overweight or obese, there is nothing sane about this health crisis. • Banking: The financial crisis that changed the world in 2008 can be largely owed to a cluster of “too big to fail” U.S. banks and their employees who thought they could continuously repackage terrible debt loans. Meanwhile, unqualified customers snatched up properties they couldn’t afford. This was an undiagnosed mega-scale gambling addiction. Many in the financial world knew it simply could not be sustained but the players continued to ante up. • Climate change: Denial, denial, denial. The raw data from objective scientists overwhelmingly tells us man is largely responsible for warming global temperatures, yet we continue to use fossil fuels and to fill landfills with methane-producing waste. It’s a classic case; we completely ignore symptoms and evidence to maintain the status quo.

• A drugged nation: Marijuana, a natural relaxant, is outlawed in most states while tobacco and alcohol – responsible for incalculable violence and sickness, as well as tens of thousands of accidents and deaths each year – are lucrative and legal vice industries. Meanwhile, some pharmaceutical companies and physicians encourage substance abuse and chemical dependency by promoting pills to ease the inevitable emotional and physical pains that come with life. “Many of my psychiatric patients suffered from addiction to both legal and illegal drugs. Sometimes it was hard to tell which came first, the addiction or the other mental health issues,” Bartos says. “The legal or illegal status of certain drugs seems to be completely arbitrary -- much like the behavior of a patient suffering psychosis,” he says. • Spoiled-brat adults: Narcissistic Personality Disorder isn’t only now accepted in society, it’s widely encouraged and celebrated, Bartos says. Reckless driving and road-rage are just two examples in which individuals are so self-absorbed, they believe their time and sense of entitlement are more important than the lives and safety of others. Throw on top of that our obsession with plastic surgery, need for constant attention on social media, and pre-occupation with consumer brands and we have pandemic megalomania. • War: America has been at war for 10 years now, and leaders cannot say with any precision what we are doing with our current campaign in Afghanistan, nor what we accomplished with our last one in Iraq. It’s as if government leaders have a masochistic, sociopathic relationship with one percent of the U.S. population – the military, and their families. Young men are shipped off in the prime of their health, and often return physically or mentally damaged, if they come back at all. “Is this sane?” Bartos asks.

Mike Bartos is currently in private psychiatric practice in the San Francisco Bay Area where he lives with his wife Jody. He has several decades of experience in the mental health field, including serving as chief of staff at a state hospital for mentally ill patients convicted of violent crimes, where he focused on forensic psychiatry. Bartos is a former radio show host and newspaper columnist. While practicing in Charleston, S.C., he served as a city councilman for the nearby community of Isle of Palms. 154 FOCUS of SWFL 2013

both agree on it. Neither should the acceptance of a plea bargain be taken as a sign of guilt. It is what it is—a chance to draw the process to a conclusion.” Don’t allow yourself to wallow in the “what ifs.” When an incident occurs that ends up turning your entire life upside down, it’s easy to let yourself be taken captive by “what ifs.” As you watch a spouse, child, or other loved one suffer, it’s normal to think through the events that led up to the ordeal and consider what could have been done to prevent it from happening. But the truth of the matter is, agonizing over the past won’t change anything about the current situation. You are where you are, and your only productive option is to look forward. “Dwelling on the ‘what ifs’ only serves to keep you rooted in the past, and will dredge up feelings of guilt and anger that won’t do you or your spouse any good,” Gesse shares. “It’s difficult to keep your thoughts under control, though—sometimes I still catch myself wondering what would have happened if I had called 911 immediately after learning that our neighbor’s son was upset with Steven, if I had or hadn’t said more to the police, if, if, if… But that’s all hindsight. When you find yourself allowing those types of thoughts to creep in, instead remind yourself to focus on the plan ahead—the things you can control. Write them down as a list, if that helps.” Understand that whatever you are feeling is perfectly normal. During the process of an accusation and trial, you can expect your emotions to run the gamut. At times, you may feel anger or resentment toward your spouse. You may feel like giving up and walking away. You may feel guilty yourself. And during your darkest moments, you may even question your loved one’s innocence (even though you know better). All of these feelings are perfectly normal, Gesse assures. And when they become overwhelming, it’s important to talk to a trusted friend or therapist about them. “One thing I wasn’t prepared for was feeling that I was being judged along with Steven,” Gesse shares. “At times, I also felt paranoid and believed that everyone thought Steven was guilty, which made it difficult to interact with anyone normally. Worst of all were the moments when I caught myself feeling like the charges were somehow Steven’s fault. The same might be true for you. If he had not made that comment, you might think. Or, If she had not gone out with that guy—I knew he was trouble! On a rational level you know that the situation isn’t your loved one’s fault, but on an emotional level, you’re looking for somewhere to place the blame and channel your anger. “Once again, these feelings are normal, and you shouldn’t beat yourself up for having them,” Gesse reiterates. “However, do keep in mind the reality that false accusations are not your loved one’s fault. Remind yourself that the fault lies with the party who made those accusations, not with either one of you.” Keep the lines of communication open. At times throughout your ordeal, you may feel that it’s you and your loved one against the world. And in a manner of speaking, you’d be right. No outsider can fully understand what your family is going through, and that means that it’s crucial for you and your loved one to maintain a strong and trusting relationship. From the very beginning, set up an open-door honesty policy with each other. Commit to being open and honest every step of the way, and talk about everything—including aspects of your life that aren’t impacted by the false accusations. “Sometimes, communicating with your spouse will be very difficult,” Gesse acknowledges. “It’s easy to become so overwhelmed, stressed, and down in the dumps that you just don’t feel like talking about anything. And at other times, you may want to ‘protect’ the other person by holding certain things back, ranging from your own feelings of frustration to the bad day you had at work to news of a minor setback you just received from the lawyer. But I have learned that in the end, holding back can create feelings of resentment and distrust. You’ll be best able to support one another when you’re open and honest.” Take steps to care for yourself physically and emotionally. As previously mentioned, dealing with the false accusation of a loved one is much like dealing with the diagnosis of a chronic disease. The battle ahead will take a very tough emotional and physical toll on both of you. One of the best things you can do for yourself and your loved one is making sure that you maintain the best possible health during this ordeal so that you can offer meaningful support. “Often, medical caregivers experience fatigue and burnout, or become ill themselves,” Gesse points out. “The same thing can happen to you as you help your loved one deal with the frightening and confusing criminal justice system. Eat well, exercise, and do the best you can to get enough sleep. On an emotional level, be aware of your feelings and those of your spouse. If you suspect you may be suffering from signs of depression or anxiety, be proactive about seeking professional help. Do not underestimate the toll that this can and will take on you.” It’s okay to accept and ask for help. Once false accusations have been made, your life is about to become a hurricane of court dates, meetings with lawyers, appointments that are part of bail conditions, paperwork, and errands. In short, all of those “normal life” chores like buying groceries, taking the dog to the vet, and picking up dry cleaning will likely fall to the wayside in lieu of more pressing things. If you have friends or family members who offer to help you by bringing in meals or running errands, say yes. “Swallowing your pride and admitting that it’s tough to handle everything on your plate isn’t always pleasant,” Gesse admits. “But believe me, having the rest of your life in order as much as possible will do wonders for your mental and emotional states. If you’re fortunate enough to have trusted, supportive friends and family nearby, ask them for help if you need it. Reaching out is not an admission of guilt or even weakness—after all, your situation has grown far beyond what you’re normally equipped to deal with. Remember, if your plate is too full and you spread yourself too thin, you won’t be any good to your spouse or yourself.” Manage your expectations for the future. As your ordeal moves forward, you’ll be driven and motivated by thoughts of the future. “When this is finally over” is a phrase you’ll probably utter multiple times a day as you dream of living a “normal” life once again. That’s a good thing! However, Gesse says, it’s also a good idea to manage your expectations of what the post-trial future will actually look like so that you aren’t disappointed or upset by the reality when it arrives. “Even if the outcome of your trial is good, as it was for Steven and me, you cannot expect your life to go back to the way it was before,” she shares. “You will be a different person as a result of what you’ve been through, and so will your spouse. Your marriage may need time to adjust and grow, and that’s okay. You may also have lost some friends or even family members as a result of the accusations. After devoting your life to the trial and the outcome, you may feel lost for a time as you figure out how to move forward. My most important piece of advice is for you to take each day as it comes and focus on making the present moment as well as the future as positive as possible. If you mourn your ‘old’ life and continually compare it to the new normal, you’ll never be happy.” “Ultimately, every case is different, and if your spouse or loved one has been falsely accused of committing a crime, you’ll be facing a set of unique circumstances,” Gesse concludes. “However, if you do find yourself in this unthinkable situation (which I sincerely hope you don’t!), these general guidelines will help you to navigate what’s ahead without totally succumbing to the stress and strain. Remember, you’re a caregiver—so do what’s best for yourself physically, emotionally, and mentally.”
