Choosing The Right Accessories For Your Home
By Stan Writesel Photography by Nanette Kellerman
Art work is a great accessory which creates a strong focal point that defines a space and can reflect your personality. Keep in mind that art and mirrors do not need to hang on a wall. They can be set on a mantel or leaned against a wall to create a more casual feel. The final step when designing a room is selecting accessories to complete the look. When choosing the right accessories it is important to use the principles of interior design. In addition to incorporating scale, color, texture, repetition and rhythm, accessories should reflect your personality and create an inviting atmosphere.
W
hen purchasing accessories it is imperative to select the correct scale for your room. For instance a small paper weight on a large table or a large floral arrangement on a coffee table would not be the best option. An area rug is one of the most important pieces in any room; it provides a foundation and defines the space in a large area. You can use the rug to incorporate pillows with colors and textures that bring the eye from the floor to the sofa to make a connection. When introducing accent colors using a variety of decorative objects can have an impact. As an example, the three daisy chain vases in the photo to the left are simple but gives an extra punch of color without being overwhelming and provides visual stability for a room. While symmetry tends to convey a formal tone, asymmetry communicates a more casual feel. This, however, is not set in stone. For instance, if you hang a cluster of mismatched framed mirrors on a wall and then border the grouping with two larger rectangular mirrors, it creates a visual interest and prevents a cluttered look. 24 FOCUS of SWFL 2012
If you have collections of small items, group them together and use risers to achieve different heights. A grouping of nicely framed family photos of different sizes will create a wonderful conversation area on an end table (a candle will accent this perfectly). When placing family photos a rule of thumb to keep in mind is that formal pictures look better in a formal room, casual pictures in casual room. If you want a dramatic look – go large. Consider the vases on the console table to the left. Because of the tall ceiling this space can handle the oversized glass containers with tall dried grass. Using coffee beans adds a great texture not to mention the terrific aroma. Table top books work well on a large coffee table in addition to generating great conversations. Plants and floral arrangements bring an organic element and go with just about any style room. Decorative coasters are a must when entertaining in your home. In addition to the small accents, your guests will feel comfortable knowing where to place their drinks. These are just a few design tips and remember accessioning your home is like accessorizing your clothing – it will reflect your style and personality. In short, it will project who you really are as a person. Have fun when selecting your accessories and don’t be afraid to step out of the box. And remember sometimes less is more! As the antiquated saying goes, ‘A penny earned is a penny saved.’ Nowadays, a penny is not worth the impression on the metal. The value of a dollar isn’t nearly what it used to be, making matters for women in particular very difficult in their later years if they haven’t planned properly for the days ahead. It is an unfortunate statistic that after retirement, many women outlive their husbands at an alarming rate. Some of these women have the misfortune to find themselves in horrific situations due to lack of financial planning for a host of reasons.

Bugatti Veyron 16.4 Grand Sport
What is remarkable about Bugattis is that they have not only always been serious contenders on the world’s racing tracks, but have managed to leave a dashing impression on its major boulevards too.
B
ugatti’s little sports car of the early 1920s whose performance proved so hard to beat was the ‘Brescia’. It came in three different chassis lengths. The small supercar had a four-cylinder 1500 cc engine with overhead camshaft, which produced around 50 horsepower. The name Brescia came after its legendary quadruple victory in the famous Italian town in 1921. The longer chassis versions, which were perfect undercarriages for elegant sports bodies, were known as the ‘Brescia Modifiée’. The Type 23 exhibited in Essen is the longest-chassis version, with a 2.55-metre wheelbase clothed in a two-seater roadster body.
T 57 S Gangloff Cabriolet 1937
The Type 57 Bugatti was first unveiled at the 1933 Paris Automobile Exhibition. Its development was very much influenced by Jean Bugatti, the founder’s son, who was just 25 at the time. Its straight eight-cylinder engine displaced 3,300 cc and produced around 135 horsepower through two overhead camshafts. Variations of the Bugatti Type 57 won the Le Mans 24-hour race in 1937 and 1939. The two-seater coupé shown here, with its twin-tone paintwork, is called the ‘Atalante’ and was the sportiest of the five different body styles supplied from the Bugatti works. This coupé also features what is known as the ‘Toit ouvant’ – rolling roof in English – which can simply be slid backwards to open. Only 34 vehicles were given the Atalante body. The Bugatti Veyron 16.4 can now also be considered a classic. Entering into production in 2005, this car’s design is timeless but its technology remains unique to this day. In fact it could be said that the Veyron became a true classic the day it first left the studio at Molsheim, Alsace, where it is built meticulously by hand. The coupé version of the Veyron is limited to 300 examples, all of which have been sold. The W16-cylinder engine produces 1,001 horsepower and 1,200 horsepower in the Super Sport. The Super Sport still holds the world speed record for a production vehicle. continued on page 32... FOCUS of SWFL 2012 31
Bugatti Grand Sport Vitesse
Following the success of the Veyron 16.4 Super Sport, Bugatti did not wait long before the company received inquiries about an open-top version of the Grand Sport that could also deliver an uncompromised sporting experience. “We were instantly electrified by the idea of transferring the power of the Super Sport to the Grand Sport, that delivers a maximum of 1,001 hp, thus taking the roadster to a new level,” says Wolfgang Dürheimer, president of Bugatti Automobiles S.A.S. He continues: “Our team has managed to transfer the world’s most powerful car engine to the open-top sports car, while taking the vehicle’s dynamics and aerodynamic parameters into consideration. We are proud to present the fastest roadster ever... the 1,200 hp Grand Sport Vitesse.”
The Grand Sport Vitesse is powered by a 7.9 liter W16 engine, with four turbochargers and improved intercoolers. Furthermore, Bugatti has extensively reinforced all drivetrain components in order to safely transfer the immense force the Vitesse is capable of. As a consequence of the larger turbochargers and the overall reduced back pressure, it was even possible to reduce the fuel consumption slightly, even with the increased power output. The classic Grand Sport, a sports car with an elegant, artistic orientation, will, of course, remain in the range. Along with only 350 uniquely built Veyrons. As with age you get wiser, better, and in Bugatti’s case, well much faster. Over the year's Bugatti strives to develop more than something with four wheels. But a motoring experience of elegance and nobility, happy ninetieth Bugatti.
How does it get you from point A to B? The décor is executively covered with carbon fiber, aluminum and magnesium (mostly carbon fiber), of course all comfort areas carry the highest quality soft to touch leather. The bi-color black trim parts (for example, in the roof console) are also new in the Grand Sport version, as is a special seat design for the Grand Sport Vitesse. With that said, the answer is, “In Comfort”. If it is acceleration you need then, 2.4 seconds from a standstill to get to 60 mph. During my test drive I discovered, this is a car you can drive on a daily basis, but with over a thousand horsepower temping you. It would be better to leave the Grand Sport only for the weekends.

Florida’s New Power of Attorney Act
On October 1, 2011, Florida’s new Power of Attorney Act went into effect. A power of attorney (POA) is a legal document that you use to appoint another person as your agent while you are living to handle your business and financial affairs. Because the new POA law differs significantly from the prior law, it may be a good idea to sign a new one. Here are six things you need to know about the new law: 1. Signing formalities are crucial. The new law requires a person making a Florida power of attorney (called the "principal") to sign the document in front of two witnesses and a Notary Public. 2. New rules governing multiple agents. Under the new Florida law, if two or more agents are named in a power of attorney to act at the same time, then they can act independently of each other unless the power of attorney specifies otherwise. 3. Filing for divorce triggers revocation of a spouse's authority. The mere filing of a petition for divorce will terminate the authority of the principal's spouse to act under the principal's power of attorney. 4. Powers of attorney will no longer be allowed to "spring" into action. Springing powers of attorney will no longer be allowed to be created in Florida, instead all new powers of attorney will be effective immediately. However, springing powers of attorney signed before October 1, 2011 will remain valid. 5. Specific authority must be granted. The following catch-all phrase that commonly appears in powers of attorney can no longer be relied on:
"In general, to do all other acts, deeds, matters, and things whatsoever in or about my estate, property, and affairs, whether or not particularly or generally described and any and all other acts, deeds, matters, and things not particularly or generally set forth herein, as fully and effectively to all intents and purposes as the undersigned could do if personally present; and to employ, retain in employment and discharge such persons (both professional and otherwise) as my Agent may deem necessary to assist in the performance of any of the foregoing." Instead, a power of attorney must list with specificity the authority being granted. Although the new Act provides that POAs signed before October 1, 2011 are valid, there is a practical reason for updating your power of attorney. Once the Act has been in existence for a while, third persons relying on a POA will be accustomed to the requirements of the new Act. If a pre-October 1, 2011 POA is presented sometime down the road, it may come under heightened scrutiny, making it more difficult to have it honored by third persons. This would undermine the reason to have a POA in the first place. I hope this information on Florida’s new power of attorney Act is helpful. For more information contact: Attorney Kevin Pillion Tel. The astonishing new film, TO THE ARCTIC 3D is an IMAX®, MacGillivray Freeman Films, and Warner Bros. Pictures co-production, and a presentation of One World One Ocean, a multi-year, multi-platform nonprofit campaign harnessing the power of film, television and new media to generate greater global awareness of the ocean’s importance to society and spark a global movement to restore a healthy ocean. In order to promote changes that will help restore our oceans to their healthful balance. With an understanding that the Arctic landscape is changing faster than any other place on Earth and is in danger of vanishing completely, the film was produced particularly to build awareness and inspire greater protection for the Arctic Wilderness. “We need to recognize that environmental destruction and climate change, not terrorism or a neighboring country, are the biggest enemies of 38 FOCUS of SWFL 2011
our time. We need to fight on multiple levels – through public education, through change of policy and, on the industrial level, through technology and the way we consume and invest,” explains award-winning nature photographer Florian Schultz, who documented TO THE ARCTIC 3D in stills for its companion book, To the Arctic.
D
irected by two-time Academy Award® nominated filmmaker, Greg MacGillivray, the film is narrated by Academy Award® winner Meryl Streep, who previously provided narration for MacGillivray Freeman Film’s Living Sea and, in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, narrated Hurricane on the Bayou for the MacGillivray Freeman Films Educational Foundation. TO THE ARCTIC 3D features outstanding songs by Paul McCartney that aptly reinforce the deeply moving, grand adventure. Like Streep, McCartney shares MacGillivray’s profound regard for wildlife and the environment.
Three Goals: • Support international efforts to protect 10% of the ocean by 2020 • Inspire people to eat seafood more sustainably • Reduce plastic marine debris An extraordinary journey to the top of the world, TO THE ARCTIC 3D is the ultimate tale of survival. The film takes audiences on a never-before-experienced journey into the lives of a mother polar bear and her two seven-month-old cubs as they navigate the changing Arctic wilderness they call home. The filmmakers followed the mother and her two cubs for five days which has never been done before. Captivating, adventurous, and intimate footage brings moviegoers up close and personal with this family’s struggle to survive in a frigid environment of melting ice, immense glaciers, spectacular waterfalls, and majestic snowbound peaks. This is the first time a polar bear family has been tracked-and-filmed in the wild for five days straight. Produced by Greg MacGillivray’s son and partner, Shaun MacGillivray, TO THE ARCTIC 3D will be released exclusively to select IMAX® theatres starting April 20, 2012. MacGillivray Freeman Films is the world’s best-selling producer of films for IMAX® theaters. TO THE ARCTIC 3D was filmed entirely in 15/70mm, designed to take full advantage of the IMAX 3D format, capturing spectacular shots of one of the most remote, beautiful, and vulnerable regions of our planet. “It’s our hope that by engaging people through seeing the film, they will want to make the social changes necessary to save and restore our oceans,” says Shaun MacGillivray who also serves as managing director of One World One Ocean. www.oneworldoneocean.org

My Body and I Have A Story To Tell…
By Agi Smith
My body and I have a long history together and it wasn’t until recently that I recognized the true friendship and loyalty she has unrelentingly given me. I have no recollection of when she was tiny, pudgy and cute, although I wish I did, because it may have been the only time I would have looked at her with non-judgmental eyes. In grade school she embarrassed me regularly because she was so darn skinny. Everyday I would look for creative ways to hide her by dressing her in baggy pants and oversized tops just to conceal those bird legs. No matter how much chocolate I shoved in her mouth or Doritos I forced her to munch on she just wouldn’t gain a pound. 40 FOCUS of SWFL 2012
All my classmates taunted us regularly and relentlessly because of our boyish figure. It wasn’t until later in life I wished I could have that boyish figure back and the freedom to eat chocolate and Doritos guilt free. My shame of her waif like body left her sweaty and miserable almost every summer, yet, she never complained and always had the fortitude to carry me on any new adventure I desired. As the years passed she began to change her appearance by growing two little lumps on her scrawny frame, unmanageable hair and a set of crooked teeth making her look like a really ugly boy, again, I was unsympathetic. Even with all my loathing she stayed true to me by being strong, healthy and agile allowing me to play, swim, learn and explore the world around us. The entry into puberty brought continuous change and I stayed committed to hating her for not mutating in a way I believed would have brought both of us joy. We were clearly not on the same page. I pushed her daily to exercise and eat only what I thought would serve me not her. We spent our entire twenties fighting like two old ladies. Just like a couple heading for divorce we grew to hate each other, only in this case, there wasn’t a judge in the land who would be able to separate us. I was stuck with her and she was stuck with me. She was always asking for food or sleep and the more she asked the less I gave her. Instead, I would punish her with hours of aerobics to Olivia Newton John’s Let’s Get Physical. She had no idea the pressure I was under to make her look good. By the time we arrived to our thirties we were at an all out war with each other until one day in our late thirties, my body and I decided to change the world… we got pregnant. During this time it was my turn to show compassion towards my body as she stretched, bloated, got sick and winced in pain. I even allowed her to eat all the foods she craved; chips and lots of French fries - I still allow her a generous amount of flexibility when it comes to French fries. During the pregnancy she betrayed me again, allowing our boobs to grow into the size of two peaches on Barry Bonds type steroids.

Towards the end of our pregnancy she was stretched as far as she could be without popping and I was exhausted listening to her kvetch for the past nine months, but we were a united front. Together we gave birth to the most beautiful little spirit, she was pink and perfect, until… the doctor told us she was very ill and would probably “not make it!” Not make it… Like a fly stuck in a jar I was bouncing around in my brain feeling helpless and scared. My body, well, she was calm and knew exactly what to do. She marched into the ICU and told the nurse to hand that baby over to her then she created another miracle… she began to feed our precious baby with the two most valuable assets we had… our breasts. Eleven years later, our baby girl continues to be our little miracle. Today, I stand before myself in the mirror and see the hips that were once boyish padded with love, love that carried our little girl for years every time she looked up at us and said, “uppy.” Our face is lined with wrinkles, wrinkles that were once an enemy, now they represent pages in our book of life and they tell the story of a beautiful friendship between my body and my mind. Together we have traveled, chased dreams and have now begun to grow old…er. We are kindred spirits brought together in this life span and she has generously loaned me her vessel to help me sail through my journey of this existence. A day – hopefully a long time from now - will come when we must part ways and I will need to lay her down to rest permanently.
Now days, I try to tell her how much I love her, how beautiful she is and how sorry I am for the years I abused, disrespected or let her down. She rewards me daily with a renewed sense of energy and continuous health. Every morning she places our two feet on the ground and takes us anywhere I wish to go. At times I still look at her and feel disappointed in her shape and how she is beginning to show the signs of an old weathered ship, but then I remind myself how far we have come and how we still have so much to do. I love my body, and she has shown me time and again how much she loves me. She is beautiful, superlative and uniquely one of a kind. We are perfect together and I am eternally grateful for her choosing to take me on this glorious ride. My body and I have a long ways to go with many more stories to tell, but for now, I am happy to say that we are a true love story…

Ultherapy
®
A Novel Minimally Invasive Procedure
By Stephen Prendiville, M.D.
Stephen Prendiville, M.D., is the only Fellowship Trained and double Board-certified Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeon in Lee County. The introduction of Ultherapy® into the facial cosmetic realm has stirred a great deal of interest, with features on “The Doctors” and “Dr. Oz” offering a breakthrough form of facial rejuvenation. This technology utilizes focused ultrasound waves to stimulate collagen production and facial soft tissue tightening. The question is: How good is Ultherapy®? Although the search for the fountain of youth is first credited to explorer Ponce De Leon, this quest has never really abated. American culture has been fascinated with looking younger for generations, and this fascination has only grown stronger with time. The popularity of cosmetic procedures is the United States is born out by a number of recent surveys. The American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS) reported that more than nine million surgical and nonsurgical procedures were performed in the United States in 2011. The American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery reported in 2011 that member surgeons performed an average of 1,000 surgical and nonsurgical procedures in 2011; of these, three quarters were nonsurgical cosmetic procedures. If one was to look back 30 years to the 1980’s, the topic of nonsurgical aesthetic procedures was a very short chapter in any Facial Plastic Surgical textbook. However, with society’s desire to have improved appearances without downtime, and hence without surgery, there has been a proliferation of nonsurgical options. This trend started with Botox®, and quickly moved on to fillers (Juvederm®, Restylane®, Radiesse®). However, since these minimally invasive procedures are capable of achieving specific targeted goals without reproducing the comprehensive results seen with more invasive procedures like Facelift, Brow Lifts, or Laser Resurfacing, the search continues. 44 FOCUS of SWFL 2012
In the last decade, a technique known as Thermage®, a form of facial soft tissue tightening achieved with radiofrequency, was introduced. Unfortunately, results were mixed and unpredictable, making it clear that this procedure was not the “nonsurgical Facelift” many had sought. Other devices, such as Titan® (infrared), and Pelleve® (Radiofrequency) have since been marketed in the United States, but have not attained the status of “goal standard” of minimally invasive facial tightening procedures.
The initial response to Ultherapy® has been favorable for facial tightening and brow elevation. A review of patient reactions to Ultherapy® on a plastic surgery website (www.realself.com) reveals an approval rating of 83 percent among 143 patient reviews as of press time (Thermage® has an approval rating of 39 percent among 250 patient reviews).
Before
After
The main criticisms of Ultherapy® have been twofold. The treatment is moderately painful, albeit tolerable utilizing mild oral pain control. The second, via anecdotal reports, has been that Ultherapy® works better in patients in their late 40s to late 50s much better than it does for patients in their mid 60s and older. This leads to the conclusion that Ultherapy® appears to be the most effective minimally invasive soft tissue technique in its class, although not really a “nonsurgical Facelift”. In fact, most Facial Plastic Surgeons are skeptical of the words “nonsurgical” and “Facelift” within the same sentence, viewing such phraseology more as marketing than reality.
In the last several years, a device known as Ulthera® was introduced, which utilizes focused ultrasound energy to cause deep tissue heating and subsequent collagen stimulation. Unlike its predecessors in the field of minimally invasive devices, Ultherapy® has received an FDA indication for soft tissue tightening (specifically in the ability to achieve a nonsurgical brow lift).
Ultherapy® can be viewed as an advance in minimally invasive soft tissue tightening, as an effective tool when applied to a patient with appropriate indications and expectations by an experienced Facial Plastic Surgeon. As far as the fountain of youth….. the search continues.
Ulthera tightens the skin and stimulates collagen Ultherapy® is typically performed in the outpatient setting, with oral sedation and takes about 60 to 90 minutes to perform. The target areas for soft tissue tightening include the lower cheek, jowl area, neck, and brow area. Since Ultrasound has been used for decades as a soft tissue imaging modality, the depth of tissue penetration is more standardized than with radiofrequency devices like Thermage®. In fact, the device has two target depths, 4.5 mm which targets the fibro fatty tissue beneath the skin known as the SMAS (superficial musculo-aponeurotic system), and 3.0 mm to target the deep dermis; the device has imaging capability, allowing for visualization of the treated tissue during treatment. Results are gradual, taking a minimum of two months and as long as six months to unfold, lasting an average of 24 months.

OVE L in the air for woman over 40
By Gina Battle
Traditionally a blushing bride is on the underside of 26 years old. Couples have been planning their nuptials for months, perhaps up to a year or more. She has chosen a romantic floral bouquet; they’ve sampled the perfect tiered cake; invited fabulous guests; lamented over heavenly gowns, this all prior to the day they walk down the aisle to recite their vows. The day has finally arrived! For any bride, no matter what her age, the wedding day is a day like no other. It is a magical day enveloped with love, happiness; hope for the future, and dreams fulfilled. The ideal of the typical age of a bride is no longer the old standard -- young. For various reasons, many women are seeking wedded bliss at a nontraditional time in their life. It is likely getting married or remarried may occur beyond age 40. For the sake of this article, let’s assume they are experienced, independent and self-assured individuals. Whether she’s a first-time bride or has taken multiple vows, the case is no longer that the mature bride is hiding in unflattering, unassuming fashion on her wedding day. This bride is beautiful, stylish, gushing and she wants to make as vivacious a statement as her younger counterpart. She may even acquiesce and wear white, ivory or a surprisingly bold color. “The bride wears what she wants too,” said Judie McGlinchey, a professional bridal consultant/stylist. Trending now in bridal fashion is bold hues, like hot pink or royal blue shoes just for an eye-popping punch of color underneath the gown. Some brides are putting a coordinating color sash on the gown or a little feathery flower to incorporate more color for fun. 46 FOCUS of SWFL 2012

Styles have changed as women have evolved through decades of bridal fashion design. Designers in the industry are appreciative of a mature woman, particularly those poised with the goal to make her fashion choices coincide with a picture-perfect wedding. Judie says, “True, they’re more assertive and know what they want whether they’re having a beach or destination wedding, or marrying on a cruise – they just know.” The excitement doesn’t stop at a certain age group. According to Charlotte Bridal Boutique owners, Lynn and Ken Adkins, the eldest bride they have consulted was a beautiful, glowing, spry woman in her 80’s. Although there may be a significant age difference, a bride is a bride… and a beautiful bride shouldn’t have boundaries because of her age. She looks forward to her wedding day like she did as a little girl.
Judie gives the same advice to younger and mature brides alike. It goes without saying, any bride can be influenced by family and friends, because their opinion means so much to her, and she might give way to the pressure in spite of her true feelings. However, as a result of the assertiveness she possesses, the bride may revisit the shop and choose the original dress, ending up with what she actually wants.
A
nother great piece of advice given to help deter this from happening is simple. “Don’t bring too many people with you to try on dresses. The more people you have, the more opinions you’ll have to deal with and the more decisions you will have to make. You can be guided by your family and friends, but it’s between you and the groom, it’s your day whether it’s the first wedding or another.” Who can argue with that; wasn’t figuring out the seating chart enough drama? Being an older bride does have an essential worthwhile advantage. The 40+ bride most likely leaves behind any illusions about the day after the wedding. Her focus is not only on the day, but she and the groom are more apt to put effort into ‘From this day forward… till death do us part.’ Congratulations to all brides taking their vows to honor and cherish this summer of 2012.

From having a totally paperless office to an ultra relaxing jellyfish aquarium, every measure has been taken to allow the staff's focus to be on having happy, well-informed patients. "We have found that serving Starbucks, having enough staff to offer unmatched personal service, and constantly investing in technology has increased our bottom line in more ways than one," said Dr. Goldberg. Dr. Dana feels that being connected with patients and engaging them in their patient experience is critical for the medical practice of tomorrow, and every person on her staff is enabled to do whatever it takes to make a satisfied patient at all costs. In a time when insurance companies and a sluggish economy are forcing many South Florida plastic surgeons to slash overhead or find new sources of income, Dr. Goldberg and her team have achieved extraordinary growth by measuring patient satisfaction as a leading factor in their bottom line. "I remember hearing about Nordstrom allowing a customer to return tires for a refund even though the chain has never sold tires," said Dr. Goldberg. The idea that "the patient is always right even if they are not," has become the cornerstone of what Dr. Goldberg calls the "ultimate plastic surgery patient experience." Dr. Goldberg believes that technology has been a key driving force in making her business model work. She has worked hard to create a very content rich experience for patients by employing YouTube, Facebook, and numerous other social media platforms. "We have well over 5,000 monthly visitors to our website, and patients see that we are different right away when they see the amount of 'sales free' information available," said Dr. Goldberg. How to Avoid Moving Scams By John Bisney
Memorial Day marks the beginning of the traditional moving season, which runs through Labor Day. But unfortunately, not all of the estimated 37 million Americans who change residences during 2012 will have a smooth move. A few, in fact, will almost certainly have their worldly possessions “held hostage” by unsavory types known in the professional moving industry as rogue operators -- imposters who are often really criminals. The harm they cause can range from annoying to tragic. Such self-styled “movers,” hiding behind professional-looking websites that mask their phony operations, usually don’t live up to their promises. And as consumers continue to transition away from the Yellow Pages to shopping for services online, they frequently fail to realize that hiring a legitimate mover requires some checking. Immediately snapping up a low price online is fine when looking for a DVD – but don’t forget that when you move, in simple terms, you’re inviting people you don’t really know to pack up everything you own in a locked truck and drive away. One of the most common scenarios has these con artists holding trailers of household goods hostage unless the customer pays an exorbitant fee. Or claiming that the items suddenly weigh more than they did when loaded -- and so will now cost substantially more to deliver. It’s the last thing a customer needs -- relocating can often be a hectic and stressful life transition said to rank with losing a loved one or a job. During such times, it’s no wonder consumers may not be as careful as they should be when choosing a mover. Yet taking just a few minutes to check out your mover will almost always prevent such headaches. Here are five tips to help you avoid the bad guys: 50 FOCUS of SWFL 2012
1. Be wary of “guaranteed” estimates over the phone or Internet; instead, get at least three written in-home estimates. Show the mover everything you intend to take, including items in the attic, basement, garage, storage areas, shed, yard, etc. to ensure an accurate estimate. 2. Browse through a prospective mover’s website thoroughly. Make sure you have a physical address and a phone number. Ask to visit the facility if you have concerns. 3. Be suspicious of carriers seeking large down payments, and never sign any blank forms. 4. Take valuables, such as coins, jewelry, photographs, rare collectibles and important papers with you. 5. If you’re moving between states, your mover under federal law must give you copies of three documents at the time of the estimate: the “Your Rights and Responsibilities” and “Ready to Move?” brochures, and information on the arbitration program the mover must participate in. Read them carefully.
Finally, if you’re moving locally or within the same state, check to see whether the company you’re considering is a member of a state moving association (more than half the states have such organizations) or of the American Moving & Storage Association, the industry’s national non-profit trade association. If you’re moving between states (or within California), make sure your mover displays the ProMover logo. AMSA created the ProMover certification in 2008 as the moving industry’s “seal of approval” to give consumers a way to easily separate reputable, professional movers from con artists out to make a quick buck at their expense. To earn this designation, participating AMSA members undergo an annual screening that includes a review of any felony convictions of the company’s owners, officers or majority stockholders regarding matters over which the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA), the Surface Transportation Board (STB) or any state consumer protection agency has jurisdiction; verification of company ownership with the appropriate state corporation commission; and a review of each applicant’s website for improper advertising. Each new applicant must also complete a signatory agreement attesting it will comply with FMCSA and STB regulations and uphold the AMSA Code of Ethics. The ProMoverSM logo stands for a set of basic, honest business principles -- a distinctive, stylized “M” that at a glance gives customers the confidence and comfort of knowing they and their cherished possessions aren’t being taken for a ride. By following these simple steps, consumers can easily avoid the problems that often accompany doing business with someone who is mover in name only.

ontinuing with a tradition of creating jaw dropping exotics; Lamborghini sets a new presence of the most uncompromising open super sports car of its entire history. The Lamborghini Aventador J is a force of nature on wheels; a one-of-a-kind piece of art, supremely powerful and supremely open. The Aventador J offers its pilot and co-pilot an utterly indescribable experience of power and dynamics. At the same time, the 700 hp two-seater is a first class technology showcase, combining innovative solutions and brand new materials, indicating Lamborghini’s enormous expertise in carbon fiber technology. The Lamborghini Aventador J is a radically open automobile – exterior and interior meld into each other. The designers and engineers in Sant’Agata Bolognese have not only dispensed entirely with the roof, but also with the front windshield. This requires that drivers of the Aventador J must have the right equipment for driving at top speeds higher than 200 mph is a highly exclusive experience. As any occupants of the Aventador J are confronted by the element of the wind in much the same way as a superbike rider – therefore the right clothing is prerequisite for every trip. “With the Lamborghini Aventador J, we have molded our brand DNA into its most definitive form to date. This automobile is as extreme and as uncompromising as only a Lamborghini can be,” says Stephan Winkelmann, President and CEO of Automobili Lamborghini. “The new Lamborghini Aventador J is the most radical open supersports car of Lamborghini’s
history. Its name comes from our tradition and combines an unconventional design with technology innovation. Nowadays we are confronted with several regulations that we face in the spirit of challenge. The Aventador J is the proof that, despite the rules, Lamborghini will always make people dream, even in the future.” Technically based on the Aventador, Lamborghini is carrying on its glorious brand tradition. Take the 1970 Jota, for instance, was the car of legends – a Lamborghini Miura with improved performance and virtually redesigned in every detail. It remained a one-off; although some owners subsequently had their Miuras modified to look like the Jota. The letter J is derived from the sporting rules of the FIA world motorsport organization. Its “Appendix J” defines the technical specification of race cars in the various classes. The Lamborghini Aventador J is a super sports car of positively dramatic single-mindedness and openness. It combines the overwhelming performance of the Lamborghini Aventador with the most intense experience of power and dynamics imaginable in an automobile. The technical basis for the Aventador J is the Aventador LP 700-4, Lamborghini’s new twelve-cylinder model. Presented in 2011, the Aventador has been acclaimed by customers and journalists alike. The Lamborghini Aventador LP 700-4’s technology package is unique – its structure is based on an innovative monocoque made from carbon fiber FOCUS of SWFL 2012 57
reinforced polymers that combines systematic lightweight design with optimum stiffness and safety. The new twelve-cylinder with a displacement of 6.5 liters and 700 hp combines the best in high-revving thrills with mighty pulling power. Its super-fast ISR transmission, permanent all-wheel drive and pushrod suspension combine this potent power with the utmost handling precision. In this open version, the monocoque has a largely new design, including the two safety bars behind the seats. The absence of a roof, of the large windshield, of the air conditioning system and of the navigation system obviously takes it to an even lower weight thanks to its carbon fiber construction. The unique expertise of Automobili Lamborghini in the field of carbon fiber reinforced polymers is evident not only in the hi-tech monocoque, but also in the research into further innovative solutions.. The specialists at Lamborghini have developed an even more amazing version of carbon fiber material for the Aventador J. In its first automotive application, this carbon fiber fabric called “Carbonskin” is made of woven carbon fibers soaked with a very special epoxy resin that stabilizes the fiber structure and keeps the material soft. Like a hi-tech fabric, the carbon fiber mats fit perfectly to every shape. In the Aventador J, the complete cockpit and parts of the seats are clad in this material and shimmer in matt carbon fiber black. It’s conceivable that in future there will be many potential applications for this freshly patented and extremely fine-looking material, even very high-end clothing. Clear, precise surfaces, as well as sharp, often broken lines are among the unmistakable styling tools. They consistently emphasize the power and enormous presence of these Italian super sports cars. Not one line is ever accidental – the defining principle is always ‘form follows function’. This function is very clearly defined for the Aventador J – explosive dynamics, extreme driving fun, a 58 FOCUS of SWFL 2012
unique experience. Every mile with the Aventador J is extreme fun: something plainly evident from the very first glance. The wheels, of course, were also developed specifically for this car, with 20-inch rims at the front and 21-inch at the rear. The five-spoke aluminum wheels have a central lock system and an additional carbon fiber insert that functions like a small fan for optimum brake ventilation. Naturally, the doors on the Aventador J also open upward. They are considerably thinner than on the
Aventador and are fitted with a tiny, fixed side window. The muscular flanks around the rear wheels are hallmark Lamborghini and make it immediately apparent where this particular bull keeps his power.
enormous fixed spoiler mounted on the body shell by two arms. ‘Form follows function’ to the 9th degree. The spoiler is supported by two pillars connected by the diffuser: clearly inspired by racing.
ecause of its ample dimensions, the eye is drawn inexorably to the rear end. It consists in principle of just three elements – the carbon-fiber rear diffuser, the four huge tail pipes and the rear lights with their typical Lamborghini light signature in the form of a Y. The remaining surface area is for heat dissipation and is enclosed only by a black metal mesh. The rear end is crowned by an
In comparison with the Aventador LP 700-4, the exclusive Aventador J has special front and rear bumpers. Both bumpers have been supplemented with carbon fiber fins that act as flow deviators. Their purpose is to achieve a significant increase in the vehicle’s down force at both the front and the rear. Two large openings lay bare both cylinder banks of the mighty V12 power unit with its 6.5 liters of displacement – a truly stunning sight for every automobile aficionado.

Once inside, you’ll notice how the interior forms flow seamlessly into each other. This supersports car turns its inside outward and is as open as it can possibly be. Conversely, the exterior ‘flows’ through the interior – a red stripe runs from the front hood, between the two wind deflectors, over the dashboard, down the console to the center tunnel and back up between the seat backs, before leaving the interior and heading for the engine cover panel. This band of color connects the front and the rear of the car, creates a visual separation between the driver and passenger space and is interrupted only by a small control panel housing the starter button and the switches for lights and transmission. What remains, of course, are two programmable TFT displays behind the steering wheel. No navigation or car audio system, nor does it have the associated screen or air conditioning controls – these would simply detract from its one and only mission… an extreme driving experience. He will possess the most extreme expression of Lamborghini’s DNA in existence and a real masterpiece of high technology. Other fans of the super sports cars from Sant’ Agata Bolognese can rest assured - the Aventador success story has only just begun. FOCUS of SWFL 2012 59

Helio Castroneves: IndyCar Driver Determined to Top the Leaderboard On March 21, 2012, Helio Castroneves, 37, IndyCar driver and 3 times Indy 500 winner visited the Shell station located on US Highway 19 N, in Pinellas Park; he greeted fans and endorsed a new premium Shell product. “Shell is our primary sponsor in St. Pete, and we’re promoting the new Shell-V Power. It has 20% more nitrogen enriched fuel,” he said. Team Penske seems confident the Shell product will provide the optimum in quality and allow for another successful year during the six-month series.

In conjunction with celebrating the new season, a new car and a fresh outlook, the meet and greet was an opportunity for this avid sportsman to share time with his loyal fans “It’s the first race of the season, everyone is fresh.
Helio has found the ability to realize his dreams. “I came to America in 1996, and as they say, it’s the land of opportunity, and I agree. I really love this country.” He said graciously. Currently, he resides in Ft. Lauderdale, FL with his family.

native of Brazil, this charismatic, energetic, heartthrob, on and off the racing circuit, has begun his 13th season of the IZOD 2012 racing series with a new car, a new attitude and is out to conquer a feat that only 3 other race car champions has accomplished. He is determined to win a Championship this year with help from sponsors like Shell, his Pit crew and of course, the ultimate driving machine, his No. 3 Shell V-Power Pennzoil-Ultra Dallara/ Chevrolet. Helio is eager to tie the record for a fourth IndyCar win – claiming his victory. Generous surprises of free fill-ups, gas cards and tickets to the 1st race of the 2012 Season were given away in a sweepstakes, and just as important, premium grade gas was pumped by the IndyCar driver and 2007 ‘Dancing with the Stars’ Mirror Ball Trophy winner – all the while free-flow chatting with Shell customers.
His enthusiasm was well received as was his giant infectious smile. Helio’s optimism is unsurpassed, evidenced by the apparent admiration from his diehard fan base. “This is me, I love to be in touch with the fans because I am a big fan of a lot of sports and I go to cheer for the team (if it’s not the person), so I try to give back in the same way. I love being close to everyone.” Racing isn’t purely a man’s sport anymore; it has an appeal to women as well, perhaps it’s the allure of fast, ultra powered cars, the need for speed, or simply the racing action that takes place on the track.

When asked about his future goals. “Our goal is to win!” Whether he’s wearing a helmet in his Dallara/Chevrolet or doing the Cha-Cha, He’s the guy you want to root for in any competition. If winning the Season Opener is any indication of what’s to come, then Helio is on a roll. Go Helio, Go!
Helio’s desire to race came from his Dad. “My dad never raced, but he loved racing: with that, his passion for racing rubbed off. We were never competitive against each other, he was right beside me and he never told me what to do, but steered me in the right direction. For me, it was great to learn – I’m still learning, but that’s the way I got the speed, I would say.” This gentleman has the charm, personality, determination and courage of a superstar-action hero; although he doesn’t believe it. chariot awaits Mercedes-AMG has been launching itself into the 2012 season with roadster vengeance; with the SL550 roadster and the SL63 AMG roadster. Now… Due to arrive in U.S. dealerships in November, the new MercedesBenz SL65 AMG V12 Roadster made its world debut at the 2012 New York Auto Show. The AMG 6.0-liter V12 biturbo engine generates a peak output of 621 hp and a maximum torque of 738 lb-ft. The use of an all-aluminum body-in-white delivers a drastic weight reduction of 254 pounds. The distinctive front end is dominated by the new "twin-blade" grille with two blade-shaped fins and the lower horizontal bar in the front skirt in high-gloss chrome.

"The combination of exclusive V12 dynamics and cultivated roadster pleasure was already unique in the previous model. We are certain that, with the new SL65 AMG, we have developed a stunning high-performance automobile beyond compare for a small, but loyal fan base," says Ola Källenius, CEO of Mercedes-AMG GmbH. The intelligent lightweight design of the body shell also contributes to the reduction of fuel consumption. A key element in the improved fuel efficiency is the result of the AMG SPEEDSHIFT PLUS 7-Speed transmission, the ECO stop/start function, and improvements to the internal efficiency of the engine and alternator management. Despite a considerable improvement in fuel economy, the peak output of the AMG 6.0-liter V12 biturbo engine is up from 604 hp to 621 hp. The maximum torque stands at a mighty 738 lb-ft.

his unparalleled output provides amazing propulsion for the new SL65 AMG – acceleration from 0 to 60 mph takes 3.9 seconds. Top speed in the U.S. market stands at 186 mph. The key attributes of the AMG biturbo twelve-cylinder include its heart stopping acceleration, and seamless power delivery combined with a distinctive AMG V12 soundtrack. In short, the SL65 AMG captures the imagination with its refined, stylish performance. The SL65 AMG is clearly recognizable as a stylish and exclusive high-performance roadster not just techni-
ish. The characteristic AMG styling of the SL65 AMG also includes the front skirt with large openings for cooling the engine oil, water, charge air and transmission oil, the specially designed sill panels, the AMG spoiler lip and the rear skirt with a diffuser visual and body-color inlay. Typical V12 features are not only the two chromed, standalone dual end pipes of the AMG sports exhaust, but also the V12 BITURBO lettering on the fenders and the titanium grey painted and polished 5-spoke AMG alloy wheels with 255/35 R 19 tires on the front and 285/30 R 19 on the rear. cally, but also visually. The SL65 AMG is presented for the first time with the new AMG "face". The two dominant visual elements - the grille and the lower air inlet – remain, but have been reinterpreted to give them a more distinctively dynamic and premium look. The central styling feature is the new twin-blade grille finished in high-gloss chrome. The Mercedes star is mounted on two bladelike fins with aerofoil profiles. The stronger arrow-form of the grille optimizes the vehicle's longitudinal proportions, adding even more visual emphasis to the aerodynamic, minimalist design.
Not just the inner attributes of this new AMG 6.0-liter V12 biturbo are stunning; along with its inspiring sexiness of the SL. With great power comes great responsibility… Mercedes-AMG has come to mate an exceptional pair of characteristics that delivers on all levels.

The sixth generation of the SL offers a space-saving electro-hydraulic retractable hard-top that converts the SL65 AMG from a roadster to a coupe in less than 20 seconds. In contrast to the previous model, the new SL comes with the unique MAGIC SKY CONTROL. Its transparency can be switched from light to dark at the touch of a button. The stylized "A" that is a hallmark of AMG vehicles is retained beneath the twin-blade grille. Along the lower edge of the air intake is a slit beneath a fine black fin for optimum airflow to the cooling modules – a perfect combination of design and high technology. The lower horizontal bar on the front skirt is finished in high-gloss chrome and is lent significant visual depth by the slit above it, creating a premium visual accent. The twinblade grille and lower horizontal element are two corresponding design features that emphasize the new AMG brand "face" – this look will be further developed in forthcoming AMG models, increasing even more the visual recognition of the AMG performance brand. The top-of-the-range model is distinguished from the SL63 AMG by carefully placed applications in high-gloss chrome – as well as the twin-blade grille and the lower horizontal bar on the AMG front skirt, the bezels in the AMG-specific LED daytime running lights, the side fins on the fenders and fins on the hood all have the same surface fin-

Joshua McKinley Fashion Designer Emphasizes ‘Fun in Fashion’
By Gina Battle
is an article of "Confidence clothing, and without that nothing is going to look right" When you think of Macy’s, you think fashionable, high-quality retail giant. When you think of Joshua McKinley… 26, fashion designer, reality star and runner-up of Project Runway Season 9, you think uniquely fun fashion. And when the two collaborated at Macy’s in Naples Coastland Center Mall, on March 24, for the 5th Annual ‘Find Your Magic’ Macy’s event, it ignited a fresh, provocative and innovative pairing certain to have a longstanding relationship. “I think they’re a great brand with a strong presence in the industry. I think they’re wonderful.” Joshua said.
The audience participation was as much a crucial contribution to the success of the event and was a fun highlight of the challenge. The crowd was enthusiastically amped about who would be the winner of a $100, $50 and $25 Macy’s gift card, by voting on various styles during three rounds of competition. The audience was also treated like personal guests of Macy’s as delicious appetizers were served, not to mention the chance to mingle with McKinley.
Macy’s produced a spectacular fashion show incorporating the unique perspective from the Fashion Week NYC designer. This had the audience of loyal customers exhilarated with anticipation of meeting McKinley and to see what’s trending for this season.
There’s no doubt Joshua has an affinity for being in the public eye, happily meeting and greeting his adoring fans. He is a natural star born for this industry and everything affiliated with it. His commitment propelled him to the final four contestants in Project Runway, allowing Joshua to pursue his dream of participating in Fashion Week NYC.
Consumers were offered an amazing chance to interact on the stage as part of the reality-style take on the show that made Joshua a star. Contestants were asked to pick the best outfit from a rack of clothing to best suit a person perhaps going to a beach wedding of her friend or to a garden tea party.
After leaving Ohio for college in NYC, Joshua said, “Ultimately, I got to NY and was not satisfied. I didn’t feel the buzz and energy of NY that I wanted because I wasn’t in the City. I’d heard of Fashion Institute of Technology. The name is prestigious around the country, so that’s where I landed.” continued on page 68... FOCUS of SWFL 2012 67

Sidebar Note of interest: The rose Joshua McKinley wears in his lapel has become his signature accessory. “It’s actually historical based. President (William) McKinley, on my father’s side of the family, was the 25th President of the United States. Ohio’s state flower is the carnation. He always wore a red carnation on his campaign trail, so this is kind of my nod to my family lineage. “I love leather and I love roses, so I think it’s just something that’s become like this staple of a broach… on my lapel.” Apparently, it was the right decision and only a few short years later, the entire paradigm of his life shifted. Joshua seems to have become an overnight sensation, as an unconventional fashion designer he has a fresh approach to design and he’s not afraid to use it. Initially, during the Project Runway competition, the major critique of his fashion forward runway designs needed editing, because in the judges’ eyes ‘less is more.’ They are the professionals judging the designs after all. McKinley thinks, sometimes, more is better. True to form, he took the critiques making adjustments and edited his work still keeping true to the integrity of his creative fashion perspective. The unpretentious designer is more than capable of bedazzling and coloring outside of the proverbial patterned lines indicative of his unique style without seeming inauthentic. One of Joshua’s recommendations is that we all should “have a little fun with fashion! I love a little bedazzle moment.” McKinley points out, “With clothing people can interpret their own individualism, putting things together and merchandise themselves. They can style in such a way that they say, ‘look at me, this is who I am’. It’s ion yet the

loft-style showrooms. He often tells people, “Confidence is an article of clothing, and without that nothing is going to look right.” It’s no wonder Joshua is easily recognizable this early on in his fashion career, he is nearly mobbed wherever he goes because of his pleasing personality, his talent, his integrity and authenticity. “The demographic that the show reaches is insane; I mean, I have grandmother’s and young ladies come up to me who have seen the show.” He said, beaming with pride. Joshua explained that for him the fashion industry means: “Designing, creating and experiencing new textiles and fabrics; pairing different textures most other people might not put together. I love a silk next to leather or a neoprene, which I always enjoy using – paint, and you know… bedazzling if you will.” Whatsoever his motivation, McKinley is becoming an industry superstar. Being ever gracious, he is humbled by the thought and quickly professes, “I’m on the rise, trying to make it happen.” Joshua is destined to have a design legacy for the ages. The interpretations of this visionary fashion virtuoso gives new meaning to Project Runway’s resident mentor, Tim Gunn’s famous encouraging phrase, “Make it work!”

Summer Fashion By Samantha Ramos
Southwest Florida has an incredibly chic and green environmentally friendly sense of fashion. The comfortable and beautiful styles of clothing and accessories are both flattering and functional. Many unique designers in the area have created fun and sassy looks that work well in the tropical summer weather, with fabrics that breathe and flow well on humid days. Upbeat socially conscious designers in Southwest Florida like to make use of organic materials such as hemp and cotton, and make creative use of recycled materials like candy-wrappers and bottle corks. Talented individual creative artisans also create handmade purses, bags, and jewelry from organic and recycled materials to compliment the look. Whether visiting the beaches in Florida or going out for an extravagant classy event, the fashions of Southwest Florida have something charming to offer this summer season. 78 FOCUS of SWFL 2012
Starting from the top (face), I suggest staying neutral. As makeup can make or break a slamming outfit. Of course this depends on your occasion, but wonderfully put together neutrals are sure to make jaws drop; right down to those soft colored manicured nails. Make it look like you’ve taken no effort at all. Organic clothing and bedding stores along our coast offer thoughtful trends that provide 100% organic, attractive and comfortable styles, while still being environmentally friendly. The fashion industry has made remarkable improvement in the recent years. In fact, today, summer styles have developed to become very elegant, smart, stylish, sexy and stunning.
Designers produce clothing made from organic materials to the exotic with the goal of making you feel more of the person that you are. As you bring out or change your style, from work, home or play. What is the perfect summer outfit? Pair up an outfit that will provide you with comfort and are made out of some of the best materials. The materials should be such that it allows easy circulation of air, without being overly loose or too tight which makes it uncomfortable to sit or move around. Whatever outfit you choose it should look great on you and you should be comfortable with it and this is one of the prime considerations you need to have in mind when selecting this seasons treads. Any outfit, without a perfect fit, for your personal style will make you look incomplete. So, make sure this summer you are going to buy what is made for your size. Realize its importance if you do not want others to think that you do not have any sense about fashion. Right fitted clothing is very appealing and brings out your personality in a wonderful way. It states without saying, wherever you may be what you are here to do. Be it relaxing along the gulf beaches or having lunch at a café. Select styles that can give you a stunning look, but provide the same required comfort level as well. Like the weather, many may be fearful of change so utilizing last year’s wardrobe is a great option economically and fashion wise this year; so whip them out! But, remember to mix something old with something new, just to give it a bit of spice. Don’t lock yourself in a room with the anger of not having a single stylish outfit. Unless, you are willing to try something out of your usual wardrobe, how can you taste the real fun of wearing something stunning? The summer is here so take a look at some long flowing asymmetrical skirts to sway in the breeze to reveal those stylist leather thong sandals. There is plenty of room for color… This summer embrace color, it will be different. The last few fashions shows on the runways from Paris to New York have made it clear that consumers are being invited to face up to a riot of layered, clashing, bright digital prints like nothing seen before. Opening your palette to striking patterns and bold floral photographic images on fabrics are just as likely to mark out the look of this summer, both in home furnishings and on the rails of your favorite dress shops. A little pop of color is on trend and it can add some fashion interest to any ensemble. As some of this summer’s colors fall on some of the hues we know so much along the coast, like orange, tangerine, tangelo and maybe a sun washed orangey has become strong choices. Of course the standard color is and still remains white and tan. If you check your local boutique you will find these made even better with different levels of white and tan. continued on page 89... The design may vary from dress to swimsuit because each one has its own selected use and comfort level. Always have a trial wear as to know the comfort level and also do not buy an outfit in which you feel uncomfortable. The combination of comfort along with style exists in such a way it has a fit for everyone at any level. It’s a playful tribute to femininity and an alluring homage to celebrate every woman’s beauty and power, from stylist sandals to the high heeled shoe’s curvaceous silhouette inspired by that stylist tread your spouse loves to see you in so much. For the rest of the look ladies can embrace vintage since the style exudes elegance. This season it’s combined with a modern flare. Plenty of egg shelled colored lace and sheer tops that pair nicely with bright colored pants to create an unexpected pop. It’s perfect for a lunch date with the gals, a romantic evening of interest. All of these events bring about great memories and much fun, and fashion does the same. When a design comes around that you like,

you’ll want to buy many items, particularly if it’s something that is likely to be worn again and again.
As today’s forward-thinking designers, create fun trendy cloths and accessories that are made entirely with natural resaources and safe natural dyes. Their cloths may hold up better to general wear and washing because the materials they use are not only more environmentally friendly than synthetic products, but generally last longer. As with our summer you are not only concerned about the sun, but sand, rain along with sand wear and tear. This will offer you great summer clothing that will stay as trendy chic fashions for the whole year. With that said, you can also take these thoughtful trends into your designs for home fashions to dress up your living space, like bedding and sheet sets that are made to last. mer day. They believe in the philosophy that style affects the world around them, and should have a positive effect on a local and global level whenever possible. Not only do they create fashion that is organic, economically reasonable, and socially responsible, but they also extend their ideals to the way they treat their customers. Their fashions are made in such a way that the customer can feel good about the purchase because the materials are safe and organic, and the company feels strongly about those involved in creating the finished product. Creative use of recycled materials is also a theme in Southwest Florida summer fashion. Many recycled
materials can be used to create new useful things, which reduce the need for new supplies that deplete natural resources. Even footwear designers in Southwest Florida have gotten into the green movement with some of their chick and sassy creations. Other companies make unique and creative accessories such as shoes, belts and purses using recycled materials such as old candy wrappers folded and woven in fun colorful patterns. People who are in the area may also be lucky enough to find local artists that use the same kind of recycled and found materials to make unique and beautiful accessories. any one of the fashion districts from 5th Ave to Main St will lead to finding local vendors that create handmade jewelry, handbags and totes, and unique items that become conversation pieces as well as functional fashion. The movement of fashion design in Southwest Florida supports enterprising companies, as well as talented artistic individuals who have found a special niche. Many individual makers of jewelry, clothing and other Southwest Florida fashion accessories also have websites that make these fashions available world-wide, while some of them are very locally based. Larger galleries and boutiques also often support local artists by making their work available on consignment, which helps to provide good opportunities to skilled people in their individual communities. If fashion can be based on a philosophy, the philosophy of style in Southwest Florida is to create fun and useful products for men, women and children that are both organically friendly and socially conscious. The benefit of the local community is
part of the creation process, honoring the needs of workers, and the creative skills of local artists. At a corporate level many companies support this same practice with an evolving consciousness of the impact of their business and practices on the environment we all share. Within the local community this green friendly approach has also encouraged local artists and smaller businesses to adopt such principals. Those aspects of fashion design have made the fashions of this region interesting to people all over the world. Locals and tourists enjoy the fun and comfortable summer fashions that Southwest Florida offers, which are colorful and unique, look good and breathe well in the heat, and are made with good principals. You are only a few steps away to grab the opportunity waiting for you and a stylish summer outfit will act as your helping hand.

Liliana Villalobos
By Lina Lasalle
Born in Lima, Peru, on January 17, 1964. The youngest of six siblings – four brothers and two sisters. During school years she lived in Lima, Peru, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, and Cuzco, Peru, until 1980. A very active, sports-loving person. She lived and worked in Miami for three years. First, as a waitress at a couple of restaurants, and then as a car insurance salesperson. Living in a foreign country opened her mind to new risks and gave her the experience that only one can acquire through life. In 1988, she returned to Lima with some sewing machine heads and lots of ideas - Peruvian government had banned machinery imports at that time. She went into partnership with her brother Jorge Villalobos – current Director of Applauzi Peru and Applauzi International Corp. USA - to incorporate Applauzi S.A. (bathing suits manufacturing.) In 1993, she marries Fernando Almaraz-Grandchant and is now mother to three children: Josefina, 16 years old, Fernanda, 14 years old, and Mauricio, 11 years old.

6th annual
Paws on the Catwalk By Karla Rodriguez
The Humane Society of Sarasota’s 6th annual event Paws on the Catwalk was a huge success on Friday April 27th. Held at the Ritz Carlton this year, they have thus far raised $200,000 over the past five years collectively for the shelter animals with this particular event. It was a sold out event for the luncheon presented by Dr. Elizabeth Callahan of SkinSmart Dermatology. Before the luncheon there was a silent auction along with various stands ranging from clothes, collars and boarding for pets; to clothes and jewelry for humans, and even Botox. After a few speeches, jokes, and a musical performance by Chris Eisenberg, the runway show commenced with outfits from Shore, Gap Kids, and Banana Republic. The best models, by far, were the cuddly ones with four legs looking for a good home and a warm family to care for them. What a spectacular event for a great organization. Please visit www.hssc.org to find out how you can adopt, donate, or volunteer to help these wonderful animals.

A Dream Come True For Restless Sleepers
The dual zone ChiliPad and ChiliBed have independent controls, allowing couples to easily set and adjust individual sleep temperatures with a wireless remote control. This safe, simple system balances temperatures at a desired level throughout the night. The entire Chili Technology product line offers pain relief for those suffering from menopause, night sweats, aching muscles, injuries, arthritis, osteoporosis and other health conditions.
Whether it is trying to keep warm on a chilly night or trying to beat the summer heat, temperature control in the bed can make all the difference between restful sleep and insomnia each night. Now a new product line from a company called ChiliTechnology is solving those problems with their wireless thermostat control mattresses and mattress cover pads. The ChiliPadT and ChiliBedT use an innovative water circulation system to regulate the temperature of the sleeping surface in either single or dual zones. The control unit heats or cools regular water to a set temperature and circulates it through the pad or mattress, generally achieving temperatures between 55째 and 110째F on the bed surface.
Regarding health concerns of typical electric blankets on the market, the ChiliPad and ChiliBed have no wires in or on top of the bed that can generate a magnetic field. The Chili Technology solution is a low-voltage appliance that creates the warmth of the electric blanket without the hazards. The Chili Technology line is very energy efficient as well. The control unit averages less than 80W of energy use. "Customers so far tell us that our mattress products are life changing for them," says ChiliTechnology President Todd Youngblood, whose uncle Charles Hall is actually credited with inventing the popular waterbed back in the 1960's. "We live in a sleep deprived world these days, and therefore have to maximize the quality of our sleep. By sleeping at the right temperature the body actually spends more time in the deep recuperative cycles of sleep."

Tapas By Moony Mann Photography by Sara Timmons
I'm always excited to write about a great new place I find and I'm pleased to tell you about PATRIC'S. The format is a wonderful Tapas menu served in an intimate homey setting that comfortably accommodates all patrons when at full capacity. I know, I've been performing at the popular dining room every Wednesday all season for some very receptive crowds. The comments about the food from customers are overwhelmingly positive. Which may explain why there are so many "regulars" making reservations to dine. The service is second to none in the area, I know, I perform in many of our area's better venues as a soloist or with my band as many as 450 times each year. I had a chance to chat with the owner-operator who prefers to simply go by the name Patric and this is what I learned. "Everything on the menu is made from scratch with ingredients that were bought from local growers and purveyors. I believe in supporting local businesses, I think it's all about the locals." says Patric, and then jokes "And the only thing processed here are credit cards." I have to admit it, I prefer fresh ingredients in my food.
The foundation of the successful restaurant is obviously based on a sound business philosophy as evidenced by the demand for the award winning Breakfasts, Lunches, Dinners and Catering Services provided to locals, tourists and businesses. 98 FOCUS of SWFL 2012
I asked Patric where his culinary inspiration comes from and he told me his mother was a baker and that he paid attention while working under some really good chefs. There is no doubt of this in my mind as I have eaten many meals at the cozy spot. He admits that some of his more proud moments have happened since opening the business over three years ago which include being voted "Best Family Restaurant" by The Naples Daily News in 2011 and proudly displays his "Choice Star" award. Becoming Community Blood Center's Corporate Contributor of the Year is also at the top of his list.
I asked Patric about the Live music during dinner and he said "It's like having dessert for your ears... the meal really isn't complete without it..." I could not agree more. It is one of my favorite rooms to perform in and you can check out the entertainment calendar as well as the menu and much more information at www.patrics.com or you can scan this QR code with your smart phone or simply find PATRIC'S in the App Store and download it for FREE Food!
Among many other accolades, one stands out to me as I have found what I think is the best apple pie I've ever eaten. It was only after eating what would be the equivalent of several pies that I discovered the recipe is a close secret of Gary Teater, who wears many hats at the restaurant and won "Best Apple Pie" in Naples recently by the Naples Daily News. I would agree and highly recommend the Apple Pie. For Breakfast I recommend the Hash, for lunch I recommend the Grilled Chicken Sandwich and for dinner, the Mussels. Trust me... I pressed Patric to tell me where he thought his business would be in ten years and he said he hopes to "one day add a bed and breakfast in the mountains near the Carolinas or Kentucky. " I wish him much success with this dream.
Martine Angelique creating her art
C
By Ripton Powell
onsciousness behind the new brand "SAAT Grand" is Jersey born Miami residing designer Martine Angelique. Being well versed in the urban "East Coast" culture and being engulfed in world of fashion from the age of eight years old ,when she says she got her first pair Italian leather heels, was possibly the most potent formula to lead to a career in fashion. The idea behind the Swedish named brand, SAAT Grand, was to develop a ready to wear couture line that would consolidate the urban influences of the most major scenes in the last 30 years. The mixture of modern and vintage feels allude to an enhanced yet simplistic fashion line that was inspired by years of advising some of the men in her family shopping in Lord & Taylors and the women in boutiques and houses like Versace. The European style, mainly London, also helped propel the identity of her brand. With the ideals of designers like Grace Jones in mind, Martine has compiled city-styled "SOHO", South Beach-driven "MIA", & Euro-motivated "London Town" to create a line that pays attention to detail, fit, color, quality and fabrics that will be launching this fall . SAAT Grand appears to be promising with such a designer; a mind that has been enveloped in Vogue and Elle while obsessed with altering ensembles for the last fifteen plus years points to someone who knows how to approach the industry. Martine has gone from destroying her clothes with scissors and sewing needles to using the same tools in partnership with her intuition to create art that wearers will be able to understand and express their inner fashion savant. It's safe to say that anyone who can appreciate the aesthetics displayed in high fashion today and yesterday will be able to relate to the thought process of this young artist who displays her passion through the avenue, SAAT Grand.

All the
Hardwork
By Trey Bell
It is hot when I step out into the parking lot outside the Art Complex at the university; the cool air conditioned environment of the Art Complex is welcomed oasis in the desert island that is the Florida afternoon. I am greeted by the sounds of preparation, in room 130 three young artists have been working to get the exhibit space ready for Thursday night. That is the evening of the opening reception for the Florida Gulf Coast University senior’s exhibition, Finals: Spring 2012 Senior Project. The spaces are in various stages of completion, with all variety of visual art occupying the gallery. I wanted to see the seniors setting up their spaces, that way I could talk to a few of them before the business of the reception is underway, which makes it impossible to get a moment with them while they are trying to shake everyone’s hand and say hello to all the family and friends that inevitably that come to show their support. 104 FOCUS of SWFL 2012
First, I spoke with 23 year old ceramics artist, Alysa Baer a native of Naples Florida receiving her Bachelor’s degree in Studio Art, after a final spring semester of 10 hour days in the studio, Thursday night is the pay off and she is anxious for it. I find her inside a plexiglass pedestal, cleaning it up for the opening. Her pottery is highly original and is supposed to pull the viewer in with quartz and geodesic stone in the bottoms; she is looking for it to promote self-reflection through the use of these materials.
FGCU senior Hillary Kern
The next artist that I spoke with was Hillary Kern a 22 year old senior who works in a mixed media of acrylic, sandpaper and sponges. As I gaze at Ms. Kern’s subject matter I am struck by the color and textures in all of the pieces. She will have 15 in all with three of them made up of six smaller canvases, and every one of them is a cupcake. Dulcis Vanitas is what she titled her
exhibit, and she tells me that the real comforts she draws from the sweets are the act of baking, those memories last so much longer than the actual cupcake itself, and that sense memory can take us back to our childhood.
Senior artist Alysa Baer two ceramic pieces on display at the Finals. Ms. Baer created 21 glazes of her peices for the exhibit.
After taking in all the sweetness it was on to something a little earthier, 25 year old senior Erica Klopf’s Food Forest. Ms. Klopf’s work in the University’s oncampus edible food forest was the basis for this double major’s (environmental studies and the other in art) exhibit. She used watercolor, a multi-media presentation on a computer along with photography for her project.
Senior Erica Koplf's mock up of the FGCU Food Forest which she designed, makes up a part of her project at the Finals: Spring 2012 Senior Project.
She plans on hitting the ground running after graduation having already started her own landscape design company appropriately named: South Florida Edible Landscaping Co. The evening of the opening reception, after everything has been hung and lit to the artist’s desire, it’s time to let the public in to view the blood, sweat, and tears that this handful of graduating artists poured into their creations. This is the time for validation and acclaim, to let out a breath and relax, before the real world comes knocking on their door.
Jason Brownie
Charlotte County’s own Local Legend
By Karla Rodriguez
An Aquarius, born in Fort Myers and raised in Punta Gorda, Jason Brownie has been singing ever since he could talk. He grew up on his Grandparent’s ranch listening to country music and is inspired by artists like Eric Church, Luke Bryan, Dierks Bentley, and Hank Williams Jr.
A
t age fourteen he learned the guitar, and in 2001 started the band Shades of Gray with his buddies Mike Laden, Drew Helstrom, and Russ Richey. They made a name for themselves as a rock band in Charlotte County, and traveled from Fort Myers to Tampa to perform for their fans. The band is currently on hiatus, which has allowed Jason to venture out and challenge himself to show that he isn’t limited to one type of music. He hasn’t played solo in four years and says he likes doing his own show the way he wants, but it’s more pressure and lacks the camaraderie he had with his band mates. Jason’s Grandfather was a huge influence in his life and his original song “Angel” can touch any heart that hears it. He appeals to any demographic with his variety of songs on subjects from heartbreak, to his popular original Patriotic anthem called “America.” Jason’s hope for the completion of his country EP album is to get a record deal.
106 FOCUS of SWFL 2012
His latest gigs have been held at Punta Gorda’s In Your Face Cupcakes. Completely acoustic and stripped down, Jason gives a four-hour set playing cover songs, and his own material. His biggest fans are his closest friends that attend his performances, which makes his show very relaxed and playful, yet intimate. He’s very blessed to have such a support system. I have faith that this die-hard Tampa Bay Bucs fan will go far. Visit www.facebook.com/Jasonbrowniemusic and become a fan. On his page you will find out where he’s playing in the future, and the latest news so you can keep track of this soon-to-be star. If you’re lucky, you might be able to catch him doing his world famous Arnold Schwarzenegger impression. Support local artists who are working hard to make it big, this local legend will not let you down.

A simple way to indulge yourself!
Her Own
Way
By Trey Bell
The ending of a semester for students in Southwest Florida’s Universities means final exams, papers, projects, and performances. These are all stress inducing events and we wanted to find some students that were bringing their semesters to a close and see what they had accomplished over the spring term, and what lay ahead for the summer or fall. I found one Ringling College of Art and Design student to speak with not too long after her completion of the end of the year project, Ashley Poiwlski.
W
hen I met this 21 year old photography major under the shade of downtown Sarasota in the early afternoon, she was a reflection of the assignment; in her six inch Jeffery Campbell heels, with a print skirt and black corset, fingers and wrists adorned with large rings and bangles, reading the latest issue of UK fashion magazine, Industrie , she was the epitome of the young and the fabulous fashion photographer that makes the business of fashion her life. Ashley, like most of her generation, embraces social media and uses it as an extension of herself, Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr, Instagram, she has a presence on them all, as if it has always been this way. Her Instagram feed (@ashleyyheather) really illustrates the way she lives the fashion world, and it is never more prevalent than when she talks about her latest project, and the equipment that she employed. Having the resources of the College at their disposal Ringling students really do produce amazing work, and Ms. Piowlski is no exception, for her latest project she says that she used two Fuji instamax cameras, a Canon 5D Mark II, a Canon Rebel film camera, borrowed from a friend, and last but not
least her phone, an Iphone 4, along with the lighting and batteries for remote power. All of that equipment, a borrowed wardrobe(most from Sabo Skirt) and three models later, she has what she wanted, a magazine quality fashion spread of which she can be very proud. The work itself is shot on location and is a testament to Ms. Piowlski’s planning and vision; it could very well be Sabo skirt’s next campaign. The project is entitled “Walk this Way” it’s a fashion editorial meant to be viewed as a magazine feature. After going through her process for the project it is time to ask about a career in the fashion industry, what does she see in the world of fashion photography that inspires her to join a community that is admittedly cut-throat, cruel and demanding. “I have so much competition, like you know, people that are already very big, so many people that I look up to, but at the same time I am going to have to do better than, so that I stand out, it’s really all a matter of networking myself… I feel that if I can do that and show them that I can be good enough and work hard enough… I am very ambitious and I work really hard when it comes to my success… I don’t know, I am a little scared, but I feel like I will be okay.” Asked about her influences in photography and fashion Ms. Poiwlski replied: “Annie Lebowitz, Bill Cunningham, the street photographer, and a photographer I recently talk to Melissa Rodwell, she’s a fashion photographer in New York, and she’s amazing.” If her current work is any indication, the fashion world will soon have a new rising star photographer that could easily join the ranks of those idols listed above.

How to communicate with your Doctor By Maria McCutchen
Photography by Nyul
Going to the doctor can be intimidating. For some, it's the fancy plaque hanging on the wall that intimidates them. For others it may be a conflict in personality. Whatever the reason, some patients may leave the office feeling frustrated. They may leave feeling as if they have many questions unanswered. Knowing how to visit your doctor will help relieve your anxiety, as well as will help to get you the answers you want and need.
• Relax - Don't let the degree on their wall make you nervous. Before you see your doctor, take a deep breath. Try relaxation techniques before you see her if you tend to get nervous. Remember, she's just a person, too. • Be on time - Showing up on time for your appointment communicates that you are serious about your health, as well as you respect your doctor’s time. It's frustrating for the office staff and your doctor when you are late. This may cause them to have to shuffle patients to get you seen. You may also jeopardize your time with your doctor. • Be Prepared - If your doctor asked you to bring in copies of records or films from another doctor, be sure to come prepared. This way you won't waste hers or her staff's time with having to track them down and get them faxed at the time of your visit. Being prepared communicates that you care and are serious about your health. • Make a list - Take a few minutes to make a list of questions you have for your doctor. Make a copy to give to your doctor and one for yourself. Two copies will allow her to follow along as you go over them. She can also put a copy in your chart to refer to. Keep your questions brief and to-the-point. Remember, you aren't the only patient she has to see, and is probably on a tight schedule. • Tape record the visit, or take notes - Take notes. If you don't write fast, ask her if she'd mind if you recorded the visit. Notes will help you to be able to remember your conversation later when you want, or need to. It will also prevent you from having to bother her or her staff later, by calling to ask questions later. • Be respectful - Being respectful to your doctor, even if you don't agree with her findings or answers, shows that you respect her as a person, and as a physician. Doctors don't always know everything. If you hear something you don't agree with, tell her in a respectful way. • Let her know you're getting a second opinion - If you decide to get a second opinion, out of respect, let your physician know. You can also share the name of the other physician you'll be seeing. The two physicians may decide to confer about your case. Telling your doctor will not only make you look smart, but will show your doctor that you care about your health. Your physician will respect you for having the second opinion as well as for telling her.
Knowing how to communicate and interact with your physician will not only show that you care about her, but your health, too. Good communication will also encourage her to listen to you well, and to treat you respectfully. This, in turn, will help you feel less anxious about seeing her, as well as can help you build a good relationship with your doctor. 110 FOCUS of SWFL 2012
