This museum specializes in exhibits dealing with Lawrence history. One exhibit is “Early Settlement,” which displays the area history as an 1850s Free State fortress. The exhibit concludes with the tragic climax of Quantrill’s Raid on Lawrence, August 21, 1863. Also displayed is “The Basketball Man: James Naismith,” the inventor of basketball and KU’s first coach. Ironically, Dr. Naismith is the only Jayhawks coach ever to have a career losing record.

Quantrill’s Raid: The Lawrence Massacre This tour focuses on what some historians call the bloodiest single event of the Civil War. Retrace William Clark Quantrill’s fiery path through Lawrence as he and 400 pro-slavery guerrillas burned most of the “Free State Fortress” in 1863. Begin at Oak Hill Cemetery then visit sites and markers and see homes and buildings that survived the raid. This unique tour walks you through a variety of Architecture in Old West Lawrence. These homes were not built only to accommodate basic housing needs, but these homes were built to make statements of wealth and prestige. The houses include many different architectural styles that include Classical, Victorian, Modern, Colonial, Neoclassical, Gothic Revival and many more. Several of these houses survived Quantrill’s raid. This 126 home historic district is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The neighborhood was also recently a finalist in the “America’s Prettiest Painted Places” contest.

Historic Trails of Douglas County, Kansas The Santa Fe and Oregon Trails were two of the most historic wagon trails that led west. Gold seekers, fur traders, explorers, settlers, and others frequented the trails until after the Civil War ended making room for the railroads. By the 1870s, the wagon trails had become obsolete only leaving history to follow. Take a driving tour and follow the Oregon Trail and/or the Santa Fe Trail through its path through Douglas County.
