Beware of The Phog KU’s Allen Fieldhouse and the Booth Family Hall of Athletics are must sees for any sports enthusiast. The Booth Hall celebrates KU alumni varsity athletes and will be the eventual home of Dr. James Naismith’s original rules to the game of basketball. Nearby, on KU’s West Campus, the Dole Institute of Politics honors those who have served our nation and also houses Senator Bob Dole’s congressional papers and memorabilia in multi-media exhibits. The stunning limestone structure also boasts the world’s largest stained glass American flag.
From the top Founded in 1865, the University of Kansas is situated atop Mount Oread. The university is home to 26,000 undergraduate students and boasts a campus as beautiful as any in the nation. The KU Visitor Center is located at the campus’ west entrance and offers maps and information to help plan your visit. Memorial Union is located at the north end of Jayhawk Boulevard and is a great bookend to your campus tour. There you can find oncampus dining and souvenir options, as well as the ever-popular JayBowl bowling alley. Down the street is the nationally recognized KU Natural History Museum.
Celebrate Rock Chalk style Tailgating is a big part of the KU football game experience and is allowed in a number of lots adjacent to KU’s Memorial Stadium. Surrounding private yards are also popular locations to park, set-up the grill and enjoy the energy of a college gameday. After any game, football or otherwise, The Hawk and The Wheel are popular bar destinations located just east of campus off 14th Street. Eventually most revelers make their way to Downtown to finish the celebrations. visitlawrence.com 13

Wetlands, woodlands, prairie and a 5-acre lake are all on display at the Prairie Park Nature Center. The 80-acre preserve has trails for those on the lookout for birds and wildlife. Natural habitat dioramas and live animals – including snakes, fish and birds – turn the center’s education building into a hands-on paradise for kids. Another great spot for bird lovers is the Baker Wetlands Research and Natural Area. Offering some of the most diverse habitat in Douglas County, the wetlands’ 573 acres is home to hundreds of species of birds, vertebrates, plants and insects. Visitors can access the wetlands through foot trails and boardwalks and learn more about the surrounding environment through interactive kiosks.
CLOSEBY For those who like to roam, the communities surrounding Lawrence provide plenty of reasons to explore. Eudora has its small town charms, Lecompton has its historic roots and Baldwin City has Baker University, the oldest four-year college in Kansas. Among Baker University’s historic buildings is a gothic chapel that was built in England in 1864 and reconstructed on campus in 1996. The annual highlight in Baldwin City is the Maple Leaf Festival, which arrives just as the fall colors peak. The festival combines arts and crafts, live music, unique foods and children’s activities. Train lovers will get a thrill on the Midland Railway, which offers scenic and historic rides out of Baldwin City.
FARM FUN From bison to emu, the countryside surrounding Lawrence is home to a diverse collection of farms. Many of those farms welcome visitors. pivotal HISTORY AMONG THE SPARKS THAT FLAMED THE CIVIL WAR, THE HISTORY OF LAWRENCE AND DOUGLAS COUNTY IS ONE OF FIRE AND BLOODSHED. From the Ashes As the fight over slavery escalated, so did the clashes between the anti-slavery Jayhawkers and the pro-slavery Bushwhackers. In the early morning of August 21, 1863, William Quantrill and 400 border ruffians rode into Lawrence murdering, ransacking and burning as they went. Nearly 200 died and the town's commercial heart was left in ruins. From the ashes, Lawrence rebuilt, forging a spirit of perseverance that is still alive today. To learn more about Lawrence's fiery past, visit the Watkins Community Museum of History. Or, follow Quantrill's path of destruction on a self-guided tour through Lawrence. Tour brochures are available at visitlawrence.com or at the Lawrence Visitor Information Center. 18
LAWRENCE VISITOR GUIDE
Bleeding Kansas A battleground over slavery before the Civil War started, Lawrence is forever linked to its bloody beginnings. Founded in 1854 by New England abolitionists, the town was settled to ensure Kansas's entry into the Union as a free state. Such political ideals put early Lawrence residents at odds with their pro-slavery neighbors. Bloodshed followed. Learn about Lawrence and the region's early history by visiting the Freedom's Frontier National Heritage Area exhibit, which is housed in the historic Carnegie Building in Downtown Lawrence.
A Slave State Northwest of Lawrence, Lecompton provides a different look at the region's history. In 1857, delegates met at Constitution Hall to debate slavery and draft the Lecompton Constitution, which would have admitted Kansas into the Union as a slave state. Today, the state historic site sheds light on the nationally significant document. Nearby is another historical treasure, the Territorial Capital Museum.
Armed conflict Wild-eyed abolitionist John Brown's warfare on slavery began at Black Jack Battlefield, which is located south of Lawrence near Baldwin City. Five years before the Civil War, Brown's free-state militia squared off against Henry Clay Pate's pro-slavery fighters. Today, trails lead from a nearby homestead to the historic battlefield. visitlawrence.com 19
ARTMUSICculture FROM SCULPTURES ON STREET CORNERS TO CONCERTS IN THE PARK, THE AMBIANCE OF ART IS EVERYWHERE IN LAWRENCE
CURTAIN CALLS From Broadway musicals to aerial acrobats, The Lied Center of Kansas brings worldclass performances to Lawrence. Along with nationally recognized names, the Lied Center’s season includes audience-thrilling multicultural productions. On the stage of University Theatre, up and coming student performers shine in works that range from ancient classics to modern day favorites. And, fun community theater can always be found at Theatre Lawrence. Combining performing arts and visual arts under one roof is the Lawrence Arts Center, where art galleries exhibit regional and national work and a 300-seat auditorium stages dance and theater performances.
ART ABOUNDs A must-see in Lawrence’s art scene is KU’s Spencer Museum of Art, which has an impressive collection of East Asian art and works that span the history of European and American art. For those who want to take home a Lawrence souvenir that is more than a t-shirt, Van Go, Inc. has pieces for sale from area at-risk-teens, who are trained by the region’s best artists.
Outdoor ARt Some of the town’s most viewed art isn’t housed in galleries. A quick stroll downtown will introduce visitors to the publicly funded Outdoor Sculpture Exhibit. To learn more, selfguided tours are available at the Visitor Information Center.

jayhawk
The term “Jayhawk” was used as early as 1849, when a party of pioneers crossing what is today Nebraska called themselves “The Jayhawkers of ‘49.” It’s believed they took the name from a combination of two birds that were familiar in the West–the hawk and the blue jay. The word “Jayhawk” was first used in Kansas in about 1858. It was associated with the Free Staters, who robbed, looted and were generally lawless. But during the Civil War, it took on new meaning. Dr. Charles R. (Doc) Jennison, a surgeon, used it in 1861 when he was commissioned as a colonel by Kansas Gov. Charles Robinson and charged with raising a cavalry regiment. Jennison called his regiment the “Independent Mounted Kansas Jayhawkers" and later the Seventh Kansas Regiment.During the Civil War, “Jayhawk” became associated with the spirit of comradeship and the courageous fighting qualities associated with efforts to keep Kansas a free state. Following the war, most Kansans were proud to be called Jayhawkers. By the 1890s, birds of one sort or another were used to represent KU on post cards and wall posters. In 1901, the University’s yearbook became known as the Jayhawker. A series of Jayhawks appeared until Hal Sandy, as a KU student, created today’s smiling Jayhawk in the 1940s.
