Lawrence is a city that is happy to be what it is: a city doing things in its own way, with free thinkers not trying to be anyone else. It’s a city that is unmistakably Lawrence. Founded by pioneers driven to create a state where people of all races would be free, built up by a people who worked hard and played hard, inspired by men and women who fought for suffrage and civil rights, Lawrence has continually defined itself as an open, energetic and welcoming community. Quirky? Different? Unexpected? Yes! But more importantly, we invite you to define your own version of a city that offers an escape from the ordinary. We are honored to have you visit. Come, explore our spirit and elevate your own by enjoying all we have to offer. We think you’ll find it unmistakable.

LOCAL Not only does Sue Shea run the upscale, eclectic Phoenix Art Gallery in Downtown Lawrence—she and her husband are also downtown dwellers, living in a refurbished second-floor loft on Massachusetts Street. They are part of a trend over the past decade of a return to urban living at the city’s core with a new generation of lofts and residential complexes across Downtown.
Unique shops Downtown Lawrence is full of unique, local-owned boutiques with a rich history. On Massachusetts Street, be sure to stop by Waxman Candles, where they have been handdipping fragrant works of wax art for decades, and Hobbs Inc, a delightfully whimsical gift shop with cutting-edge fashion sense. There are many more favorites to discover, such as Yarn Barn, a knitter’s paradise, The Etc. Shop, with jewelry and accessories for all, and Stitch On for the quilters and cross stitchers. downtownlawrence.com

The Hot Dog Cart Yes, Lawrence loves its nuanced dishes and upscale dining, but we also appreciate the fun and tradition of an oldfashioned frank. When the weather warms, the hot dog cart at Ninth and Massachusetts cooks up delicious wieners—meatless option included.

Lawrence was founded in the 1850s as the center of resistance to slavery expansion. And it paid the price. Targeted, pillaged and burned to the ground during the Civil War, the community rebuilt with a commitment to education, civility and the future. A big legacy to live up to ‌ but we try. Add some fiery history to your visit.

Find it a few doors east of the intersection of Seventh and Massachusetts. Just across the river and a few blocks away stands Johnny’s Tavern in North Lawrence. Tracing its roots back to a grocery store in the 1910s that continued as an underground bar during Prohibition, it was recently named the state’s “Most Iconic Bar” by Thrillist.

In Lawrence over the weekend? Consider stopping by Sunday services at St. Luke AME church on New York Street. This Gothic Revival is listed on the register of Kansas historical buildings because it was the home church of poet Langston Hughes when he was a young boy in Lawrence, but its dynamic choir and architecture are also worth a visit. Not far away, on Vermont Street, stands Plymouth Congregational Church, the first permanent church building built in the state. It features a vintage organ from the local Reuter Organ Company in its services.

L A C O L A native of Washington D.C., Sally Zogry heads up Lawrence’s Downtown Business association and raises two kids of her own—a combination making her an expert in matching up children with Lawrence fun. Her advice? For a family trip, check calendars and plan around a big festival. Definitely bring the younger generation and consider signing them up in advance for a one-day theatre class or a library event.
Spend a day at the beach or rent a boat to cruise at Clinton Lake. Cast away any travel woes with a day by the pool—the Outdoor Aquatic Center in Downtown is a child’s summertime dream. Kansas Relays University and high school athletes gather at Rock Chalk Park for the annual Kansas Relays—now nearly nine decades old. The four-day track meet features all the events and celebration any track fan would appreciate with new events such as a quadrangular, a team-total scoring tally to highlight collegiate rivalries. The annual event takes place in April. kuathletics.com
Red Lyon Tavern There are many places to watch a game … but if your game is football (as in what the world calls “football”) then this bar at 944 Massachusetts Street is the place to be for World Cup excitement or KC Sporting matches.
Free State Brewery turns into a culinary superdome featuring none other than— mustard—every March. Playing off the popular NCAA basketball tournament event, March Madness (which Lawrence is appropriately madly familiar with), the brewery offers mustard-craving lunch and dinner specials to be paired with over 65 special mustard flavors collected from around the world. We’re still not sure why … but it’s deliciously quirky fun. freestatebrewing.com
Mountain Biking Yes, really. With two state parks in the region and an extensive levee trail along the Kansas River, multiple mountain biking trails keep local riders cruising singletracks. The Lawrence Mountain Bike Club offers a variety of events and weekly rides. lawrencemountainbikeclub.org
23rd Street Brewery Haskell Boxing This is where international contenders such as Marcus Oliveira got their start. Open to university students and community members, Haskell Boxing takes its sport to top level. Even if you don’t go into the ring, stop by during the off hours to see the gym’s tributes to Native boxing greats.
This west-side restaurant brews awardwinning beers on site and pairs them with hearty dishes, many named after local legends. Try “The Bill Self,” a mound of homemade mac and cheese topped with buffalo chicken tenders in tribute to KU’s revered men’s basketball coach. brew23.com

Lawrence is shaped by education. Our town is one of the leading cities for advanced degrees per capita, so we can be fairly smart (when we want to be), without taking ourselves too seriously. Not only is Lawrence home to the state’s flagship university, The University of Kansas, the city also proudly hosts Haskell Indian Nations University—one of the nation’s leading centers for Native scholarship and cross-tribal culture. Townie? Gownie? No difference. Everyone’s welcome on both campuses, and the universities are an essential part of the city.

Late Night in the Phog Basketball games are the main attraction at KU’s historic Allen Fieldhouse, but one of the city’s favorite sporting nights is the free, official kickoff for basketball season, Late Night in the Phog (“Phog” being a tribute to longtime Jayhawk coach F.C. “Phog” Allen). Part comedy talent show and part scrimmage night, this is one of the city’s most-anticipated and bestattended events. Not in town for Late Night in October? Then stop by Allen Fieldhouse and see the adjacent Booth Hall of Athletics and DeBruce Center, part museum and part Jayhawk sporting shrine.
Haskell Cultural Center and Museum A center dedicated to celebrating the living heritage of its students and faculty, the Cultural Center and Museum serves as an archive of Haskell’s history since 1884 with art, exhibitions, educational programs and research. In addition to displaying Haskell’s progression from a boarding school to a stronghold for Native culture, the center features an exhibit honoring war veterans from Haskell.
