Downtown Lawrence is best experienced with a slow stroll. To help you enjoy that, the city has created several free parking lots (including two covered garages) around the downtown section, primarily on New Hampshire and Vermont streets.
Urban meets country every week from April to October at the Downtown Lawrence Farmers’ Market, the oldest (and we’d say “best”) continually running farmers’ market in the state. This is a growers’-only market with value placed on real, authentic goods.

The Kaw River Flowing through Lawrence, The Kaw River (or “Kansas River”) is a National Water Trail. For Lawrence, it has been a provider of giant catfish and hydro power. Now, you can enjoy walks on park trails on both sides of the river. Keep an eye out for the University of Kansas crew teams on the west side of the historic Bowersock Dam.

If you are in town for a Sunday morning, consider a visit to St. Luke African Methodist Episcopal Church, listed on the National Register of Historic Places for its architecture and its role as the boyhood church home of Harlem Renaissance writer Langston Hughes.
Lawrence honors William S. Burroughs, the revolutionary beat writer who called this city home for the last part of his life, with this trail and park that runs through East Lawrence. The north section ends at Hobbs Park, a great place for a picnic or to read Naked Lunch.

The Douglas County Courthouse features a stunning rotunda thanks to its vibrant stained glass. If you look closely, you can spot the bright yellow sunflowers, the official state flower of Kansas.

Allen Fieldhouse, home to the men’s and women’s basketball teams, is recognized as one of the nation’s most exciting college game venues. In 2016, the adjacent DeBruce Center opened as a museum of basketball history and home to James Naismith’s document outlining the original rules of “basket ball.” The on-site Booth Hall of Athletics museum is also full of Jayhawk sporting history.
The Student Union’s upscale Impromptu Café serves global gourmet food with local sourcing and savvy cooking that attracts a crowd of professors and professionals.

THE MOUNTAIN
There’s a cultural event every week with KU Theatre, the Lied Center, KU School of Music, The Hall Center of Humanities and other organizations hosting guests. Recent appearances open to the public included author Margaret Atwood, Black Lives Matter founder Opal Tometi and country musician Lyle Lovett.
Early settlers were so impressed by the high land where the university sits that they called it “Mount Oread.” And though it is a steep rise, recent generations usually refer to the region as “The Hill.” Travel up the campus’ east-side approach from 13th or 14th streets to see how you rate the climb.
Historically, KU’s mascot is tied to the region’s Civil War history and fight against slavery, but now it has evolved into a smiley, big-beaked, bright-plumaged mythical bird whom you are likely to see all around campus. 6
TRANSPORT The KU campus and Downtown Lawrence are only a 15-20 minute walk or a 10-minute bike ride apart. You can also park your car at the campus garage (for a fee) or take the combined city/university transport bus into or out of the university campus.
Campanile Jayhawks take great pride in their landmarks, and that is especially true for the Campanile. The majestic World War II memorial is visible from almost anywhere on campus, and its carillon bells help the University keep time with regular, live performances.

haskell heritage | inter-tribal | future native pride | scholarship Begun as an institution to separate Native children from their families and root out their culture, Haskell Indian Nations University has emerged in the past decades as a one of the nation’s leading centers of inter-tribal culture and Native heritage. Native-taught, Native-led and Native-proud— Haskell is open to all visitors.
Located right in the middle of Lawrence, Haskell University’s campus has an appealing layout. That includes the grand archway welcoming visitors to the school’s football stadium, just a short walk from the Cultural Center and Museum.

Dancers of all ages and nations gather at Haskell’s Coffin Stadium each May to honor the graduating class. The public is encouraged to attend the celebration and enjoy the drum circles and dances.

Eudora (8 miles east of Lawrence): A revitalized downtown and awardwinning wineries make for a pleasant day out.
Lecompton (6 miles northwest of Lawrence): The capital of Kansas Territory from 1855 to 1861, Lecompton hosts several publicaccess national landmark
sites. Overlooking the Kansas River, the town also has one of the region’s most scenic drives leading out of the city to the northwest—a favorite route for local bikers and birders.
Lone Star Lake (11 miles southwest of Lawrence): A small lake with public access and park; dotted with small
cottages, this is a popular summer splashing and grilling spot for locals.
Clinton (12 miles west of Lawrence): A small community standing as the gateway to Lake Clinton’s Bloomington Beach. Locals stop at the Clinton general store on their way to sun and fun.
