Welcome to Lawrence. We think you will find that Lawrencians believe our city is different, a bit quirky and something unexpected—filled with a unique spirit and culture. Lawrence is a town for and full of all types. A town specifically singular, owing to the various people, attitudes and behaviors that make it up. It’s a melting pot of a town, not just because of the diversity of the people, but for the ideas that are as different as they are accepted. We appreciate the uniqueness of the people here in Lawrence. From performers, artists, sculptors and musicians to poets, authors, athletes, academicians and everything in between, Lawrence really does offer something different. We invite you to come and join the unmistakable experience.

freedom | equality | the good fight heritage | preservation Lawrence was founded in the 1850s as the state’s center of resistance to the expansion of slavery. And it paid the price. Targeted, pillaged and burned to the ground during the Civil War, the community rebuilt with a commitment to education, civility and the future. It’s quite a legacy to live up to … but we try. Add some fiery history to your visit by sampling Lawrence’s past.

University of Kansas a ccl ai me d | g l o b a l | roc k c halk | tim e-honored | visionary Lawrence is one of the nation’s leading cities for advanced degrees per capita (meaning we can be fairly smart—when we wish—without taking ourselves too seriously). This is because the state’s flagship university has been intertwined with the growth and development of the city since the 1860s. Townie? Gownie? We’re all connected, with strong coordination between the university and municipality. Campus events are most always open to the public, residents and visitors alike. CULTURE

THE MOUNTAIN

There’s a cultural event every week with KU Theatre, the Lied Center, KU School of Music, The Hall Center of Humanities and other organizations hosting guests. Recent appearances open to the public included author Margaret Atwood, Black Lives Matter founder Opal Tometi and country musician Lyle Lovett.

Early settlers were so impressed by the high land where the university sits that they called it “Mount Oread.” And though it is a steep rise, recent generations usually refer to the region as “The Hill.” Travel up the campus’ east-side approach from 13th or 14th streets to see how you rate the climb.

Historically, KU’s mascot is tied to the region’s Civil War history and fight against slavery, but now it has evolved into a smiley, big-beaked, bright-plumaged mythical bird whom you are likely to see all around campus. 6

TRANSPORT The KU campus and Downtown Lawrence are only a 15-20 minute walk or a 10-minute bike ride apart. You can also park your car at the campus garage (for a fee) or take the combined city/university transport bus into or out of the university campus.

Campanile Jayhawks take great pride in their landmarks, and that is especially true for the Campanile. The majestic World War II memorial is visible from almost anywhere on campus, and its carillon bells help the University keep time with regular, live performances.

sports fanatics | jayhawks | legends onward | records Yes, we know. Lawrence can be a tad fanatical about our sports teams. But can you blame us? Our high school squads have a long tradition of state championships. Haskell Indian Nations University has given the world Olympians Jim Thorpe and Billy Mills. And … you did know this was Jayhawk nation, right? The University of Kansas Jayhawks are perennial top contenders in the men’s NCAA national basketball tournament, and its track & field team has gold medal in its blood. With recreation trails, courts and parks across the town, there is always a chance to join in a game.

Clinton Lake Fishing, beach swimming, kayaking, paddleboarding, sailboating or leisurely motoring across the waters can be done at Clinton Lake. No boat? Rentals are available at the Clinton Marina.

Kaw Valley Kickball League Lawrence might be known for basketball, but recently the biggest, baddest participatory sport has been the grudge matches of the Kaw Valley Kickball League, where ’70s-style uniforms and Pabst Blue Ribbon beer are part of the game day fun. kawvalleykickball.com

March Mustard Madness

Kansas Relays For 90 years, university track & field athletes have gathered at Rock Chalk Park for the annual Kansas Relays—now nearly nine decades old. The annual event takes place in April. kuathletics.com

Mountain Biking Yes, really. With two state parks in the region and an extensive levee trail along the Kansas River, multiple mountain biking trails keep local riders cruising single-tracks. The Lawrence Mountain Bike Club offers a variety of events and weekly rides. lawrencemountainbikeclub.org 5

For those who can’t wait to get out of the house and on the road less traveled, Sunflower Outdoor & Bike is a local hot spot. Bikers, hikers, and campers can easily camp out here the entire day enjoying the store’s plethora of gear and the outdoorknowledge of its workers.
