ARTISTIC ENDEAVORS From Willie Nelson to the Wu-Tang Clan, an eclectic mix of troubadours have graced the stage of the century-old Liberty Hall, where astral-themed murals fill the ceiling of the main theater. This liveact venue is also Lawrence’s art-house cinema, with several showings of independent films daily. The Lawrence Arts Center hosts events, exhibits and performances at its downtown location and in 2014 it kicked off the inaugural Free State Festival with films and live entertainment.
A Parade For Every Season Everyone loves a parade, and downtown Lawrence has one for every season. School spirit soars in September when marching bands from the region convene on Massachusetts Street for the Band Day Parade, prior to halftime at a KU football game. In early December, the Old-Fashioned Christmas Parade showcases the country’s only exclusively horse-drawn Christmas parade with car-
riages, wagons and coaches decked out in their holiday best. Local musicians and revelers mark Fat Tuesday each year with a lunch hour promenade complete with brass horns and beads, and mid-March brings the annual St. Patrick’s Day Parade with fun floats and lots of green. In June, local and national artists show off their art-on-wheels creations in the funky Art Tougeau Parade.
A Vibrant Downtown Library The newly renovated Lawrence Public Library is more than just stacks; it’s a hub for community events and a lively gathering spot for people of all ages to experience the latest in information, technology and good old-fashioned books. Glass artwork by Rock Cottage Glassworks infuses the library with splashes of color, and a gigantic saltwater fish tank mesmerizes both kids and grown-ups. The children’s section holds storytime every day of the week and has ample play

tables, reading cubbies and computer kiosks to keep little ones continually engaged.
Green Spaces When it’s time for a break from shopping, head to either end of downtown to enjoy our city parks. South Park occupies both sides of Massachusetts Street — the west-side playground is a kid’s paradise, while the more peaceful east side offers manicured gardens, a gazebo and a fountain. Watson Park, adjacent to the Outdoor Aquatic Center and the Lawrence Public Library, is best known for its antique train locomotive.
A Different Kind of Convention Every spring, beer enthusiasts gather at Abe & Jake’s Landing at the Riverfront Plaza just north of downtown Lawrence, overlooking the Kansas River, to sample beers from craft breweries large and small at the Kansas Craft Brewers Exposition.

Artistic Heart
Art Culture Music
Lawrence’s creative spirit is easy to spot, with our publicly funded Outdoor Sculpture Exhibit, brightly painted murals and street-corner musicians. Some say the buildings in downtown Lawrence are works of art themselves, and the entire Downtown Historic District is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Two of America’s great writers, Langston Hughes and William S. Burroughs, called Lawrence home for periods of their lives. Tributes to both authors can be found scattered throughout town. To better explore one of the largest collections of public art in the Midwest, pick up a self-guided tour at the Visitor Information Center (402 N. 2nd St.).

music? It’s here for YOU!
On the fourth weekend in August, novice and professional musicians gather in South Park to compete, perform and jam with their fellow players at Kansas State Fiddling and Picking Championships.
Campus Culture The top of the hill in Lawrence’s art scene, University of Kansas’ Spencer Museum of Art has a deep and diverse collection of nearly 36,000 works. The impressive collection spans the history of European and American art from ancient to contemporary and includes significant work from East Asian artists.
On Stage
At the Lied Center of Kansas, Broadway musicals, national personalities, multicultural productions and first-rate musicians take to the stage. You may not recognize the names on stage at the University Theatre now, but you might someday. There, student performers tackle everything from ancient classics to modern-day favorites. Lawrence also embraces our community theater programs. In a new, state-of-the-art, 300-seat facility in western Lawrence, Theatre Lawrence still retains its intimate charm. The Lawrence Arts Center is a cultural mecca that blends performing and visual arts under one roof. Along with offering an array of classes, the center has a strong rotation of regional and national work on exhibit, and frequent dance, theater and musical performances.
Made in Lawrence Homegrown art is cultivated in Lawrence. Local art is on display throughout downtown on Final Fridays, the last Friday of every month. Galleries, merchants and community groups open their doors for browsing and socializing. Our art scene continues to grow with the Warehouse Arts District in the heart of East Lawrence. Visit the Cider Gallery. Formerly a cider vinegar factory, this beautifully refurbished building just east of downtown offers rotating exhibits of fine art.
Music to your ears On warm evenings, young and old fill South Park for the Lawrence City Band summer concert series, performed Wednesdays throughout the summer. Join an event that’s been going on since before the Civil War. More informal Brown Bag Lunch concerts are given at noon Thursdays near the corner of 9th and Massachusetts Streets. Late August welcomes the Lawrence Busker Fest, when downtown fills with performance artists from around the country for the weekend. Spectators see everything from aerial artists suspended above sidewalks by strands of fabric to comedians juggling (and swallowing) fire and machetes.

The First lesson you need to learn about KU is its mascot, the Jayhawk. This mythical bird with big yellow shoes got its name from the preCivil War border wars between abolitionist Kansas (Jayhawkers) and pro-slavery Missouri (Bushwackers). The Second lesson is that KU campus, on beautiful Mound Oread, is often referred to as “The Hill.”

Established in 1854 by New England abolitionists, Lawrence is said to be one of the few cities founded for purely political reasons. The founders’ legacy of perseverance and unwavering pride has held strong through the years. Perhaps the most infamous date in the history of Lawrence is Quantrill’s Raid. In the early hours of August 21, 1863, William Quantrill and his band of Missouri ruffians rode into Lawrence with the intent to plunder and destroy. By the time Quantrill’s men left, nearly 200 men and boys were killed, and Lawrence had been reduced to smoldering ruins. The attack was part of escalating violence between the abolitionist Jayhawkers of Kansas and the pro-slavery Bushwhackers of Missouri. Quantrill’s Raid did not start the Civil War, nor did it end it. Instead the raid became a historical milestone as one of the worst atrocities of an already bloody and brutal war. From its ashes, Lawrence survivors, many of them widows and orphans, rebuilt the community, forging a spirit of tenacity that remains strong today.

We’ve got stories to tell Learn more about the Bleeding Kansas era by visiting these sites: The Watkins Community Museum of History in downtown Lawrence contains a permanent exhibit that explores Lawrence and Douglas County’s volatile history. The Freedom’s Frontier National Heritage Exhibit, housed in the historic Carnegie Building in downtown, tells the story of how the region’s battle over slavery sparked the flames for the Civil War. About 14 miles northwest of Lawrence is the historic community of Lecompton. Here delegates met at Constitution Hall in 1857 to debate slavery and to draft the Lecompton Constitution, which would have admitted Kansas into the Union as a slave state. The document ignited furious arguments in Congress and ultimately advanced Abraham Lincoln’s bid for the presidency. Constitution Hall stands today as a testament to the nationally significant document. Some say the first true battle of the Civil War was fought at Black Jack Battlefield, five years before shots were fired at Fort Sumter. In 1856, wildeyed abolitionist John Brown’s free-state militia squared off against Henry Love Clay Pate’s pro-slavery fighters in a wooded grove several miles east of Baldwin City. Today, It’s here for YOU! trails lead from a nearby Follow Quantrill’s path homestead to the historic of destruction in the battlefield, just a few miles August 21, 1863 raid on south of Lawrence.

farm-to-table
Homegrown Brew As their tagline goes, “Because without beer things do not seem to go as well,” Free State Brewing Co. was the first legal brewery in Kansas since Prohibition. With varieties like Ad Astra Ale and Wheat State Golden, the beer has a distinctly Kansas flavor. While the beer is what draws visitors in, Free State’s consistently delicious meals bring customers back.
Lawrence isn’t new to the local food movement. April through November, farm-fresh fruits, vegetables, meats and baked goods are available on Saturday mornings at the Downtown Lawrence Farmers’ Market. You’ll find musicians and great breakfast options on hand while you fill your basket with produce straight from the farm. Limestone is downtown’s newest pizza kitchen, which uses local ingredients in its woodfired pizza, including Kansas flour and house-made mozzarella. Look for seasonal menus featuring local ingredients at the downtown farm-to-table hotspots 715, Merchants Pub & Plate and Pachamamas as well.

For the carnivores
In nice weather, the patio of the Bird Dog Bar located in The Oread Hotel at the edge of the KU campus, offers good food and drink. Basil Leaf Café, on 9th Street, serves up affordable, handmade Italian cuisine in an intimate setting just a few blocks from downtown. 23rd Street Brewery is a solid option for craft beer and family dining, and has plenty of tvs for those keeping tabs on games. If you enjoy TexMex (and margaritas) served up in a colorful atmosphere with room for the whole team, The Salty Iguana on West 6th is your place.
Lawrence barbecue joints might not be as well-known as their Kansas City counterparts, but that doesn’t mean they are any less tasty. Depending on your style, Bigg’s, Biemer’s and Famous Dave’s all offer finger-lickin’ barbecue that will bring you back for more. Barbecue isn’t the only way to please your inner carnivore. Another local favorite is Dempsey’s Burger Pub, where gourmet burgers and fresh salads abound.
Lawrence does fine dining with casual elegance. For nearly 20 years, Pachamamas has been creating seasonal menus filled with exciting global cuisine. The bustling 715 offers an impressive specialty cocktail menu and carefully crafted Europeanstyle dishes. Located inside The Eldridge Hotel, TEN’s dinner menu features five steak options, and the bar shakes a mean martini. Five 21 Restaurant, located in the Oread Hotel near campus, has an intimate atmosphere and a simple, upscale menu. Mariscos in west Lawrence specializes in New American comfort food and has a warm, romantic atmosphere.

All ages have a chance to climb aboard a train at the historic 1906 Santa Fe Depot. The Midland Railway offers summer and seasonal rides that wow the kids. For the older crowd, the Kansas Belle Dinner Train mixes a formal meal with 22 miles of beautiful, rolling scenery.

Lecompton As the territorial capital of Kansas from 1855 to 1861, Lecompton is best known for its role in the lead-up to the Civil War. The drama that occurred inside the walls of Constitution Hall, the Territorial Capitol Building and the First Kansas Democratic Headquarters highlights the conflict between proslavery settlers and abolitionists.
Where Slavery Began to die
It’s here for YOU!
Baldwin City is home to the Maple Leaf Festival, a fall favorite that brings crafts, concessions and a little pomp and circumstance to the community south of Lawrence. One
of the best times to visit Baldwin is during its annual Maple Leaf Festival, when fall colors are at their peak. The festival combines arts, crafts, live music, unique food and children’s activities.
Eudora Sometimes half the fun is the journey there. On the way to Eudora, be sure to take the back roads. Along the way you’ll find several award-winning wineries and Pendleton’s Country Market. Once there, you’ll be charmed by Eudora’s hospitality and historic downtown.
