EDITOR’S LETTER

I F N O T N O W, W H E N ? et off your butt. go outside. do something. My brother, sister and I heard these phrases from our parents on occasion when we were kids — and with train-schedule precision during our teenage years. But we were too busy planning our music careers (see how well that panned out) or hanging around the house with friends, talking about all the things we weren’t doing. My parents were reminding my siblings and me that every day is a gift, and it’s up to you what to do with it. Looking back, they were right. (Don’t tell them I said that.) Some days, they were more successful than others at driving the point home. But time on the boat was the one thing that always got us to rouse our teen-angst-ridden selves out of bed and venture into the great outdoors. That time could be as simple as a few hours of fishing or cruising around our local waterways, but we always said yes to being on the water. And while the music career went out with a whimper, getting us outside led to my life in the marine industry. My brother and I eventually earned our captains’ licenses too.

These days, my sister comes out any chance she gets. As I write this, it’s mid-December in New York, and my brother and I have spent the past four weekends on the water enjoying an unseasonably mild stretch of weather. We are heeding our parents’ advice, even if it is a few years down the road. It’s never too late to listen. (Hear that, Kevin Aidan Sciacca?) So I would like to pass along my parents’ keen words to you. I know you’re enthusiastic about this amazing pastime, or you wouldn’t be reading this magazine. But all too often these days, I hear from boat-owning friends calling me from some landlocked location explaining why they can’t take time for the family summer cruise or to go looking for that new boat I know they’ve been dreaming about since they sold the last one. I hear, “I’ve got too much stuff going on. I’m busy at work. This new project is taking up my weekends. The kids. I really need to get out on the water, but ... ” Maybe the pace of our technology-driven world has led to this scenario. And if so, it’s within our ability to change it. Take some time for you and your family. Get that boat. Plan that cruise. Go outside. Do something. If not now, when?

sive to see on a yacht of such dimensions.” De Simoni collaborated for several months with the Ferretti Group’s management, sales and engineering teams on the 140 concept. Due to launch in 2018, she will be built in light alloy with a raised forward hull section, allowing for a widebody master suite on the main deck. Side wings integrated with the superstructure protect the cockpit, and a newly styled beach club will be a first for Pershing. Three engine packages will be offered: twin MTU 4000 M93Ls in 12V or 16V, or quad MTU M94 2600s. Preliminary data show the first two choices providing a top speed of 24 to 33 knots. The M94s will generate a bracing top end of 38 knots. De Simoni sees owners as those who have loved yachts for years but did not want to trade traditional comforts for modern speed and style — until now. “The Pershing 140,” he says, “will be the ideal boat for those who, in everyday life, give up a cozy sedan for a beautiful sports car that happens to be comfortable too.”

A CLOSER LOOK: INSIDE THE BUILD

The 140 will be the first Pershing ever built at the Ferretti Group’s shipyard in Ancona, Italy, which specializes in steel and aluminum motoryachts starting at 131 feet length overall. While the location of the build will be new, the brand DNA will remain thanks to designer Fulvio De Simoni, who has penned all Pershing lines since 1985. He and the group’s team did extensive hull studies, including looking at military vessels, to guarantee that this new megayacht will offer the same level of performance that owners of smaller Pershing models have come to expect from the builder. Pershing is also promising “cutting-edge stabilization systems” so that owners and guests will feel as relaxed on the hook at night as they are thrilled while speeding across the sea by day, at head-turning speeds coming close to 40 knots. Here was a group of lifelong yachtbuilders dreaming up and constructing a truly different type of craft. This is a yacht that is varied in style and function. This latter point is driven home by

the 55-foot Sherpa’s double-paneled solar cells. These cells generate 3.5 kW of power, enough juice to run the yacht’s electronics, A/V system, refrigeration, lights, heads and more. Other features include a pollutantreducing wastewater-treatment setup and an optional hybrid propulsion system that allows the yacht to cruise at 8 knots with zero emissions. GOING THE D I S TA N C E Small-boat voyaging is a storied pastime. By Colin Bell

n november 30, 2015, Victor Mooney completed a 5,000-mile transatlantic row from an island off the coast of Africa to the Brooklyn Bridge in New York City. On that day, Mooney joined a growing list of adventurers who have made long-range, solo trips in small craft. In fact, solo voyages were so popular in the 1960s that Yachting’s February 1966 issue highlighted several adventurers who either were making or had recently completed long-distance passages. The article was called “The Single-Handed Mania.” One noteworthy voyager was 16-year-old Robin Lee Graham, who sailed from California to Hawaii with just his cat for company. John Riding made an east-west transatlantic crossing in a 12-footer. Riding’s only means of calculating his position? A $6 watch and an Air Almanac that expired halfway through his trip. “Immediately you are at sea, all fear is gone,” Riding said at the time. “You accept the situation you have put yourself in to such an extent that if the vessel sank underneath you, you’d go down not with fear, but with a curse.”

THE L AST STOP BEFORE O P E N WAT E R The Dry Tortugas lie about 70 miles west of Key West, Florida. Their location and their vibe are truly remote.

he thing i remember, more than anything else, is the feeling of being utterly, entirely alone. As I walked through the remains of the Fort Jefferson military outpost on Garden Key in the Dry Tortugas, I could run my fingers over the brickwork and look through holes in the crumbling walls, but it was the silence that captured my imagination. Not only weres there no other human beings around, but there were no sounds or smells of civilization, either. Not the faint hum of a generator, nor the distant rattling of rigging against a mast — the sound of me taking a deep breath and exhaling seemed somehow louder than a whistling offshore wind. Solitude is something many of us desire, and it is what has long made the Dry Tortugas a place that we seek out. These islands’ history is a mix of good and bad “alone time,” so to speak; one reason Dr. Samuel Mudd was imprisoned here after setting the broken leg of President Lincoln’s assassin, John Wilkes Booth, is that no matter how loudly he screamed, his voice would echo across the Gulf of Mexico until the sound

W H AT T O D O KAYAKS AND SNORKELS

Some of the best fun to be had at Garden Key is on and under the water. Snorkeling is encouraged around the old fort’s moat. Kayakers are welcome with a VHF radio or other way of signaling their own boat for help. BY THE NUMBERS

Fort Jefferson was built with more than 16 million bricks in a design intended to hold as many as 1,000 guns for protection. At its peak use, the fort housed close to 2,000 people.

WINDOW ON HISTORY

The view through this crumbling window frame has not changed much since the 1800s.

MORE THAN A FORT

Garden Key, where Fort Jefferson is located, is just one of seven islets in the Dry Tortugas. The others are Loggerhead Key, Bush Key, Long Key, Hospital Key, Middle Key and East Key.

A MOAT, JUST IN CASE Escapees would’ve had to swim 70 miles to Key West, and a moat was built as an extra barrier.

waves dissipated into the ether. Indeed, as I stood on the grass just outside the walls that once held him and other prisoners, I thought of shouting across the flat-calm water, much as I might holler into a big cathedral to hear my voice reverberate. Here in the Dry Tortugas, there would be no answer. It’s a realization both mesmerizing and humbling, a reminder that even in today’s go-fast world, we really can be alone sometimes. Ferries and seaplanes come from Key West on day-tripper schedules, and yachtsmen can pick up a mooring at any time, plus the required free permit inside Fort Jefferson. A fisherman might come by while you’re on the hook, offering fresh lobster or other catch for the night’s supper, but after he goes, it might be just you, sitting in the harbor and looking up at the stars. Go ahead and shout across the water, back toward Key West. Expect no answers, and enjoy the silence.

Bring your binoculars for a chance to see sooty terns, brown noddy birds, masked boobies and frigates. All are part of the seabird colony that calls the Dry Tortugas home. HAVE WHAT YOU NEED

While Fort Jefferson is a National Park, there are no shops. Bring food, water and other supplies, and be prepared to carry out your garbage too.

It was more than a back-of-a-napkin sketch, but not much more.” You decided against painting your boat? “Everyone advised me to epoxy and paint it, like other Carriacou boats. I wanted clear polyurethane.” How did you launch the boat? “No trailer. People pushed and pulled the boat from Bernard’s yard to the sea.” The narrow dirt track stretched for a quarter-mile with a couple of tight turns. It had to be slid along logs and planks placed underneath, and the keel did get dinged. Did you regret doing the traditional launch? “I wouldn’t have wanted to launch it any other way.” What’s next on Bluewater’s itinerary? “I’ll fix the finish soon. Not much of the old ones left building boats.” Construction of the boat took place in Compton’s backyard. S L E E P L E S S S TAT E R O O M S Some yacht berths seem more like origami than places to rest. By Chris Caswell

hat is it that some yacht designers and builders don’t understand about berths — or, as landlubbers call them, beds? Not long ago, a friend showed me his new 50-something footer. I ooohed and aaahed through the yacht — until we got to the master stateroom. There, I laughed out loud. “You’ve got to be kidding,” I said. The builder had created a berth that angled out from one corner diagonally. Aside from thinking it was a silly layout on a boat this size, I was amused by the shape of the bed. “How many sides does this bed have?” I asked my friend. “Hey, look how big it is,” he hedged. The berth had no fewer than eight sides, although a cou-

W

ple of them were curved, so I don’t know how they should be counted. The yacht’s brochure claimed it was a king-size berth, but I measured it, and it was a full 8 inches short of the 80inch length required for either king or queen berths. Making it worse was the fact that no standard sheet or blanket could come close to fitting this weirdly shaped berth. It’s no wonder a small industry has

sprung up to supply yacht owners (at measurable expense) with custom-fitted bedding. If you don’t mind sheets and blankets that come loose in the middle of the night, stop reading here. I prefer fitted sheets. As a kid, I washed boats at a local marina, and I remember a 1953 Chris-Craft that had a wonderful stateroom for the owners. This, of course, was in the era when Ozzie and Harriet

need at least the 80-inch length of a king. I’ve seen Euro yachts with singles in the guest cabins, but the berths slide together easily. And they remain square for sheets and blankets. It’s hard to get away with anything but a V-berth where a boat tapers at the bow, but I make an exception in that stateroom. You and your companion might tangle your feet at the narrow end, but that’s nice in a companionable sort of way. And anyone with a sewing machine can make fitted sheets for a V-berth. As you shop for a yacht, try not to laugh loudly at the multiside berths. To prevent future guffaws, I have two suggestions: First, before you buy, be sure you and your companion stretch out on the berth at the same time. And builders and designers, let’s return to simpler berth shapes. Then we can all get some sleep.

BUILDING A NEW MARINA

Pennsylvania-based Bellingham Marine is building the all-new, temporary marina that will host the Progressive Insurance Miami International Boat Show at Virginia Key. Special attention is being paid to the use of eco-friendly materials, from the flotation units to the deck boards. BACK IN 1969

That was the last time the show needed a new home. It began a 46-year run at the convention center.

way, there’s a list of shows that will be protected during construction,’” she says. “And the boat show wasn’t on this list.” The $500 million renovation would not be done until 2018. To remain there during construction would have required shrinking the boat show by 80 percent. Thus began the NMMA’s search for a new home as Miami’s premier boat show prepared to celebrate its 75th year in 2016. The NMMA, with the city, is moving the show to Virginia Key, specifically to Miami Marine Stadium Park & Basin. The site has been unused since Hurricane Andrew in 1992, and the effort required has been like trying to lift Mount Everest and shove it over by 6 inches. The city is investing $16 million to $20 million in infrastructure, such as plumbing, electrical wiring and fresh asphalt, for the show (and other events), and the NMMA is using the opportunity to re-imagine the entire show experience. All-new everything is being created, even the docks where 100,000 boat lovers will browse.

While the new show will be about the same size as the convention-center version — about a million square feet — a greater amount of the space will be in-water displays. Around 440 boats will be in the water this year, with room for more in the future. “For the most part, we’ve retained virtually all of our exhibitors, and many of our boat manufacturers are adding a larger in-water component for the first time,” Rick-Joule says. “The engine guys are delighted. Their tent, G tent, folks can walk right past there and see all the engines, then walk right over and see all the kinds of boats that they power.” The NMMA is also using the move to address the two biggest complaints it always received about the previous location: poor parking and dining options. In terms of parking, the previous venue had about 200 exhibitor parking spaces and 2,500 nearby spots for attendees that were iffy at best. Sometimes they were driveways local homeowners rented out for the weekend. Now, there will be 4,000 dedicated spaces on Virginia Key alone for

veryone attending the Progressive Insurance Miami International Boat Show will see it, try to recall its past and imagine its future. The sheer size of Miami Marine Stadium makes it impossible to miss, and the fun that it could offer boat-show attendees in the future makes it exciting to fantasize about. The stadium opened in 1963 as America’s first purpose-designed venue for powerboat racing. Its cantilevered upper section, even today, is considered an architectural marvel, with the design foisting viewers out over the top of the water’s racing stretch. “By boat racers, it’s considered the best place to race a boat in the world. Some of them break down in tears when they talk about it,” says Don Worth, who co-founded Friends of Miami Marine Stadium in 2008. “You have the basin with still water, and you have the spectators right over you. One-third of the stadium is cantilevered over the water. In a lot of boat races, you’re on the banks of a river, and all you can see is a rooster tail. Here, you have an incredible view under that roof.” From its opening day, the stadium hosted not just powerboat races, but also concerts and events on its floating stage. Elvis Presley filmed Clambake there in 1967. Sammy Davis Jr. famously hugged Richard Nixon on stage during a 1972 rally. Queen played the stadium. So did Steppenwolf. “People didn’t just sit in those stands,” Worth says. “They would surround the stage with hundreds of boats. People in inner tubes would be hanging onto

teve ryder has spent 28 years working for Pennsylvania-based Bellingham Marine, which, after 60 years in business, touts itself as being the largest dock-building company in the world. Ryder and his colleagues have seen a lot of marinas — but never anything like what they’re building for the 2016 Progressive Insurance Miami International Boat Show. Most boat shows are staged at marinas with existing concrete docks. “The unique thing with the Miami boat show location is that there’s nothing there,” Ryder says. “It has to be completely built for this one single purpose.” The National Marine Manufacturers Association insisted that the new docks be built environmentally friendly, avoiding using temporary docks that could break apart and become floating garbage. The Yachts Miami Beach show on Collins Avenue, run by Show Management, is reportedly working on plans to invest several million dollars to address the same concerns. This year, Bellingham Marine is building the NMMA show’s temporary docks from encapsulated foam. Long in use at many boat shows, the foam is made from microscopic beads that comprise a big block. It floats nicely, but if a boat hits it, the beads and chunks can break off. To prevent that, the new docks are encapsulated, which means thick, black plastic surrounds those foam blocks. “Ramming it with a superyacht is generally OK,” Ryder says. “You can’t cut it with a knife. “Well,” he adds, “I guess you could if you sat there and carved for a while, but it’s a very, very tough plastic.”

the National Marine Manufacturers Association. “With all of the changes that NMMA is going through, and they’re going to be so distant, a lot of people think our show is also moving,” Keating says. “They think all the boats on Collins Avenue are moving to Key Biscayne. We are not going anywhere.” In fact, Keating says, the Collins Avenue venue will expand for 2016 with several new exhibitors. There’s also a new VIP experience in the works, including parking and a private-car service between the Collins Avenue and Superyacht Miami venues. Showgoers can catch a shuttle bus between the sites, and water taxis will run along Indian Creek Waterway. Water-taxi service is also being discussed between Collins Avenue and Miami Beach Marina, which is a pickup point for public transportation to the new international boat show venue on Virginia Key. Overall, though, Show Management hopes the new Yachts Miami Beach name will help attendees remember that while the two boat shows run concurrently, they are different. “We’re the big kahunas, with the big boats and the big in-water display,” Keating says of Yachts Miami Beach. “We wanted to elevate our presence and our branding to be distinctive.”

In addition to the contemporary brushed gray oak and soft, brown leather flourishes atop dressers, nightstands and the like, this space is kept bright thanks to inset headliner LED lighting, wide and elongated side windows and a rectangular, overhead window. The Protector’s draft could handle the relatively shallow waterway, and the boat’s ¾-inch solid hand-laid fiberglass construction combined with its individually sealed, seven-chamber hypalon collar was sturdy enough to take almost any impact. Still, Clare and her two fellow crew members didn’t want to end up a crash statistic like many others who had passed through here. By one famous account, at least one boat had wrecked every quarter-mile of the stretch — and it went on, from here, for another 22 miles. These kinds of experiences can’t happen aboard just any 30-foot boat, and they rarely happen to people like Clare, who found herself on the five-day, 1,100-mile journey without ever having been offshore before. The week before this epic voyage, she’d been bartending. Her friend, Ralph Silverman, had texted her to ask, “Have you ever been to Alaska?” Ralph was joining his friend, Brian Peterson — an employee of Protector Boats, which had to return a loaner vessel from a customer in Alaska to a boat-test site in Seattle. Ralph and Brian needed a third set of hands to help document the trip through notes and photos as they ran the rugged Targa at 40, 50 and sometimes 56 knots. To most people, that kind of journey on a 30-footer might sound out there, but for Protector, it’s business as usual. The company is well-known for its military and commercial craft; in recent years, it has added creature comforts to appeal to the yacht market. It now offers three lines (Targa, Center Console and Tauranga), ranging from 22 to 46 feet length overall, with the Targa 30 being the smallest in that line. As Clare stepped aboard, she had the benefit of a 130-gallon tank carrying enough fuel to minimize stops along the way, plus those sliding enclosure windows, shock-mitigating Opposite clockwise from top left: Brian and Ralph pick oysters. Clare is a happy cruiser. A breaching whale is quite the sight. The harbor in Ketchikan. One of the trip’s natural beauties, a waterfall. Twin 300 hp Mercury Verados provide power. captain’s chairs and split rear bench seating. She and her friends might have been cruising through some potentially treacherous waters, but they felt safe and ready, even when Poseidon seemingly took things up yet another notch. “Iceberg!” Brian yelled. “Right ahead!” It was still Day One when Ralph pulled back on the Targa’s throttles, easing the twin 300 hp Mercury Verado outboards to a crawl. Six eyes fixated on the small, distant object that was growing in size as the 30-footer approached. It didn’t look all that big and scary, but then again, neither had the iceberg that brought down the 883-foot RMS Titanic. The Targa’s collar has an Armour Guard nose cone and chafe-resistant rub rails, but just the same, Ralph made sure to keep plenty of room between the boat and towering ice, knowing only about 10 percent of the berg was visible above the surface. When the boat had cleared the hazard, Ralph let out a sigh. Clare barely seemed fazed at all. “There’s a rainbow behind it,” she said with a smile. “Let me get some pictures.” For the next day and a half, the seas were smooth, but winds picked up on the afternoon of Day Three. More than 115 miles stood between the Targa’s crew and a warm place to bunk down for the night. At first, the wind was hardly noticeable, but it reached 30-knot gusts in a matter of hours. After 65 miles, the waves rose above the cabin to 6 feet, then 8, then 10, eventually reaching 12. The vessel surfed up and down at a measured pace, looking smaller and smaller as the seas grew bigger and bigger. “She’s handling it well, but we should probably push through this,” Ralph said. “I’m taking her up to 25 knots.” After nearly two hours of battling a tempestuous ocean, the group arrived in Port Hardy, British Columbia, dry and in good spirits. They hadn’t felt nervous, but stepping off the boat brought a sense of relief. Two mornings later, at the start of the final 88-mile leg, Ralph set the tone anew. “Keep your eyes peeled for Orcas,” he said. “I’ve seen them in this area before.” The Targa was cruising at nearly 45 knots when Clare signaled to slow down. Ralph reduced speed just 30 minutes into the final leg. The Protector fell off plane fast. “Look off in the distance!” Clare yelled. “Ralph, I think you missed your calling as a whale-watching guide.” The three gazed for 15 minutes as several orca pods passed, heading north. With the Verados nearly silent, the trio could hear a synchronized chorus of blowholes exhaling. There was no peeking through the opened port window for Clare this time. She was out on deck, in the sun, grinning. Brian and Ralph joined her. She looked to them, remembering everything she had seen in five days, and said, “What a perfect ending to the trip.”

The way Protectors are built — for commercial and military use — makes them ideal for those who want to escape on ultimate cruising adventures. The Targa 30 is an evolution of Protector’s previous 28-foot model, with options for wider bunks, a redesigned dashboard to accommodate larger displays and better ergonomics for electronics, higher steering wheel placement for more room at the helm and an additional 6 square feet of cockpit space.

Take the next step: protectorboats.com

Aside from two stretches of dense fog and a two-hour storm on Day Three, the group had relatively easy cruising from Alaska to Seattle.

FERRE T TI YACHT S 550

CRUISING HOME The Ferretti 550’s maiden voyage spanned more than two months and 1,500 nautical miles. Starting in July, she meandered from Cattolica on Italy’s east coast down the Adriatic seaboard, around the stiletto-heeled boot of the country, past Sicily and through the Strait of Messina, and up the west coast to the Italian and French rivieras, before arriving for her debut at the Cannes Yachting Festival in September. STEADY AS SHE GOES

Never award points for fast and furious when it comes to flybridge cruisers, for which performance should always be more stately than startling. Ferretti Yachts’ design team clearly agrees with me because there are no engine options for this model. Twin 715 hp Cummins diesels, straight boxes and shafts deliver a top speed of 30 knots and a comfortable fast cruise of just over 25 to 26 knots, all perfectly acceptable for a model with a full-load displacement of around 66,000 pounds — and perfectly on message when it comes to brand DNA. COMMANDING POSITIONS

On the face of it, helm areas aboard Ferretti’s yachts haven’t changed too much, and for good reason. Fashion has never been allowed to get in the way of sensible ergonomics. The wheel, with that double-F hub, has looked the same for more than 20 years. The shifters and thruster toggles are precisely where they should be: easy to handle for the helmsman, but not where anyone else can accidentally nudge them. A breaker panel is right by the helm too. Both the 550’s main deck and flybridge helms are to port, but below, the shifters and thruster controls fall to the right hand; above, they go to the left hand to ease the docking process.

ON EVEN KEEL

Do you have family members who would like to cruise with you but regularly suffer from mal de mar? If so, opt for the Seakeeper 9 gyrostabilizer. It takes a half-hour or so to spin up to operating speed, and then it really works. If you haven’t cruised with one before, trust me. The unit doesn’t take up much space and can reduce boat roll by as much as 95 percent. During my time behind the wheel, I spotted some particularly lumpy water, a disturbed pocket of crosscurrents well offshore. I stopped us right in the thick of it. If you weren’t paying attention, you never would have known.

Ferretti did a remarkable job of balancing the 550’s exterior lines while creating considerable internal volume.

OUTSIDE PERSPECTIV ES This yacht represents the builder’s return to the under-60-foot market with a striking design developed by Ferretti’s in-house team, along with Studio Zuccon International. EVOLUTION OF THE SPECIES

Ferrettis have been among the most desirable flybridge motoryachts for around three decades. Here’s how its 50-somethings have evolved over time. Their lines have become less aggressive, more timeless. The windows are bigger, and, with the advent of hull windows, there are more of them. Main salons have more light, and visibility is better. And foredeck terraces have emerged, adding a new dimension to on-deck real estate.

enough for a Williams 325 jet tender, now almost de rigueur for a motoryacht of this size. DOCKING

A docking station on the aft deck is optional. The Side-Power bow thruster is standard, and you can get a stern thruster too. (You don’t need the latter — until, of course, you need it, if you know what I mean.) FAVORITE SPOT OUTSIDE

Aft-deck sofas are my favorite places aboard, and the one on the 550 ticks all the boxes. In marinas, they’re the place to watch the world slide by, the place where I like to indulge two perfectly compatible passions: books and coffee.

BUILDING A L OYA L F O L L O W I N G Ferrettis are well-built, meaning they are expertly crafted and solidly engineered without being inefficiently heavy. And this builder always designs its yachts for cruising speeds rather than top speeds — because that’s what’s really important for flybridge cruisers. Quality control and after-sales service have always been to a high standard too, which almost certainly accounts for the brand’s owner loyalty. (Ferretti claims 90 percent of clients are repeats.) I recall visiting all three of Ferretti’s production facilities a few years ago and being impressed from design through pre-delivery checks.

ROOM FOR A KING

You’ll find great headroom in the owner’s stateroom, which is three steps down from the bottom of the companionway. I’m a half-inch north of 6 feet tall, and I had a full palm width to spare between the top of my head and the headliner just about everywhere in the master. That sets this yacht apart in this size range. The owner’s wardrobe is big too, and I love the two-seat booth seating and table to starboard. (A sofa’s an option.) Plenty of leather detailing and stainless steel complement the full-beam mirror behind the bed.

INSIDE PERSPECTIV ES The layout of the Ferretti 550 is all about connecting to the tranquil waters around you, as well as to your friends and other guests on board. SEAMLESS

Open living is what everyone wants aboard these days, and the Ferretti 550 has it. The design of the big aft-deck door works with the main salon and aft-deck soles, which merge at a discreetly engineered gutter without any step. It all makes for great continuity between the inside and outside. The one-space perception is enhanced further by a dark lacquered panel that extends from the cockpit deck head into the main salon, and it includes striking strip lighting. Similarly, I really appreciated the way the teak decking was taken through into the galley aboard our test boat, but I can also see the challenge to that beautiful look: Having bare teak in a food-preparation area could end up looking grubby. The alternative is to opt for a galley sole the same as the one in the rest of the salon. AMAZING GLAZING

The first thing I noticed in the main salon was the uninterrupted views in all directions. The large glass sections really wow. Look at how big those salon windows are and how relatively little the pillars and mullions are around them. COOL AND CALM

Ferretti interiors always shout quality, and this one yells with the best of them. Leather is one of those touch points this brand has always done beautifully. Twenty-five years ago, most Ferrettis would have had high-gloss cherry wood and heavily wrinkled, rich cream leather upholstery. Today’s decor aboard our test boat was ultra-cool, smooth gray leather with reverse-stitched seams and silk-lacquered, rift-sliced walnut veneers, all beautifully contrasted by taupe and dark chocolate lacquerwork. CREW SPACE

Ferretti offers the 550 with an option for a crew cabin or overspill area in the transom. Most stateside buyers will likely be owner-operators and are more apt to use this space as a large lazarette for stowing fenders, extra lines and the like.

SEEING ALL ANGLES 3-D sonar can help you find fish and increase your situational awareness. B y D a vid S chmidt

n the spring of 1998, my family and I chartered a boat for a week of cruising Australia’s Whitsunday Islands and snorkeling on the Great Barrier Reef. While the boating was world class, one nightly challenge involved finding sandy holding ground to avoid damaging coral heads with our anchor. Some areas, such as Hamilton Island, had designated anchoring zones. Other anchorages were less restricted. We learned to use our snorkeling gear to find suitable spots, but this could be dodgy (read: sharks) if we arrived around sunset.

TECHNICAL EXPERTISE FROM THOSE IN THE KNOW

INSIGHTS

TR AV ELING SPEEDS While 3-D and forward-looking sonars increase situational awareness, it’s important to understand this equipment’s operational limits. Garmin’s Panoptix provides live 3-D imagery while a boat is motionless or moving; however, Garmin advises that users restrict themselves to “safe operating speeds.” Simrad’s StructureScan 3D requires that the boat be idling to generate imagery, with the sweet spot at roughly 2 knots, and the ForwardScan sonar has an alarm-enforced 20-knot speed limit. But given that all forward-looking sonar has a maximum range of 300 to 500 feet, a boat running at 20 knots will travel this distance in 8.88 to 14.81 seconds; at 10 knots, she’ll cover this same ground in 17.77 to 29.62 seconds. Because of this, boaters are advised to travel slowly while relying on this equipment.

Fortunately 3-D down-scan sonar has arrived. EchoPilot, Garmin and Navico (which makes Simrad, Lowrance and B&G offerings) are the only marine-electronics manufacturers making 3-D sonar at the time of this writing. They all say that fishing is one of the main real-world uses for 3-D sonar, but that some of the technology’s most important applications are increased situational awareness. While these companies all offer users the ability to look ahead of their bows, Garmin’s and Navico’s newest offerings (Panoptix and StructureScan 3D, respectively) also create downward-looking 3-D renderings of the ocean floor, a particularly useful feature for anyone interested in benignly setting their hook. Garmin snapped heads last spring when it released two 3-D sonars, Pan-

optix Forward and Panoptix Down. Each requires a compatible Garmin multifunction display (MFD), a Panoptix multibeam smart transducer and an Ethernet connection. Both Panoptix products use phased-array scanning technology that simultaneously transmits more than 100 sonar beams, which are broadcast on an undisclosed fi xed frequency from discrete transducer elements. This energy returns as echoes, which the smart transducer and MFD convert into 3-D imagery. Dave Dunn, Garmin’s senior manager of marine sales and marketing, says that Panoptix scans every surface and detail of the water column and the seafloor, rather than scanning select points and interpolating data. “We can show multiple targets at the same range,” Dunn says. “We have so much data coming in that we can use the MFD and look at the [sonar

imagery] from any angle.” And thanks to the Attitude Heading Reference System sensor built into each Panoptix transducer, the system can dynamically correct its sonar transmissions to compensate for the boat’s motion, allowing the sonar to generate imagery irrespective of whether the boat is moving. Moreover, Panoptix Forward and Down sonars both have multiple display modes that graphically present the sonar data from different viewing perspectives to help increase a user’s situational awareness. Simrad unveiled its forward-looking

“WE HAVE SO MUCH DATA COMING IN THAT WE CAN USE THE MFD AND LOOK AT THE [SONAR IMAGERY] FROM ANY ANGLE.” ForwardScan sonar last winter, and its latest StructureScan 3D (SS3D) sonar complements this technology by providing 3-D imagery similar to the Panoptix Down’s “RealVü 3D Historical” mode. Navico’s approach is different from the multibeam setup. The Navico StructureScan 3D (SS3D) transom-hung, 455-KHz transducer has seven discrete elements: one that transmits (and receives) looking straight down, plus six side-looking elements (three to port; three to starboard). Of these six side-looking elements, two (one to port, one to starboard) transmit energy athwartships, while the other four listen for echoes. “This allows us to receive two signals for every one that we send out,” says Matthew Laster, Navico’s product manager of sonar technology. “We know the sound wave was the same when it was transmitted, and this allows us to compare the [two] echoes, which gives us the angle difference of all returns.” This well-known principle of comparing sonar returns to derive target information is called interferometry, which Laster describes as “shooting a 3-D movie using sound instead of light.” Hardware-wise, an SS3D system is composed of an SS3D black-box module and a SideScan 3D Skimmer transducer networked to a Navico MFD. The SS3D system creates its 3-D imagery by establishing the seafloor’s depth across the entire sonified area (the max-

imum operating depth is 200 feet), then scanning across this entire 180-degree sonar sweep using port- and starboardfacing elements (users can select a range up to 600 feet). This data is placed on a 3-D graphical layer. The SS3D module creates composite imagery by superimposing a 2-D graphical layer of high-resolution bottom-scanning data on top of its 3-D layer, which is sent to the MFD. Once that image is on screen, the MFD adds a reference icon of your yacht as well as Leading Edge data, providing a graphical representation of where the beam is pointing and its most recent sonar returns, which are updated in real time. Much like a traditional fish finder’s history, imagery from the newest SS3D or Panoptix Down systems populates on one side of the display as old information “falls off” the other side. Additionally, the SS3D uses GPS data, allowing the system to correlate

Unlike Garmin’s Panoptix, however, SS3D-equipped vessels must be idling to generate imagery. While the Garmin and Simrad sonars leverage different technologies, they both use contrasting colors to graphi-

cally differentiate the seafloor and bottom structure from targets in the water column. Also, both Garmin and Navico allow users to view and control their 3-D sonar imagery via a smartphone or tablet. As for preserving coral heads, there’s no question that 3-D sonar allows you to find the best holding grounds, irrespective of any lurking apex predators.

Intellian’s 20-inch, television-receive-only (TVRO) i5 antenna ($5,995) was designed to let boaters cruise farther afield without worrying about missing the big game or season finale. Much like Intellian’s other i-Series TVRO antennas, the i5 has two-axis stabilization, allowing the antenna to track and receive signals in rough seas. Better still, the i5 offers Intellian’s Wide Range Search algorithm, helping the antenna find its signal quickly. Proprietary technology called Dynamic Beam Tilting provides instant beam analysis that helps the antenna avoid skips or loss of service while mitigating noise by reducing the amount of time the antenna’s motors need to run. Intellian, intelliantech.com

Imtra’s dimmable Largo TriColor LED dome lights ($219) helps you operate after sundown and preserve night vision with three colors: white, red and blue. The standard version has a polished stainless-steel bezel, and the light’s surface-mounted design fits aboard boats with minimal recessed-overhead space. For energy-conscious boaters, the 4.7-watt LED light offers the equivalent lumen output of a 30-watt halogen bulb. A push-button switch controls everything from power supply to color selection and dimmer settings. The DC-powered unit also offers IP65-rated waterproof construction, a 96-degree illumination area, a two-wire installation process and an anticipated 50,000-hour life span. Imtra, imtra.com

FOREV ER FL ARE Chances are you’ve replaced your share of emergencysignaling flares — their expiration dates always seem to arrive sooner than expected. Sirius Signal’s SOS Distress Light ($99) solves this problem by using LED lights as the flare’s light source. Sirius says that the flares can be seen from more than 10 nautical miles away and can operate for up to six hours at peak light-emitting intensity (and up to 60 hours of total operation) while satisfying all U.S. Coast Guard requirements. The SOS Distress Light is buoyant and delivers the peace of mind that your emergency-signaling device will never expire. Sirius Signal, siriussignal.com

Scout 420 LXF

BRING YOU R OW N BE ACH Scout’s foldout side platform is a smart design for outboard-powered boats. By Michael Verdon

RIGHT STUFF

LOA 42'2" CRUISE SPEED 57 KNOTS

old-down teak beaches and terraces have become a standard feature on megayachts, but Scout Boats might be the first to install a foldout beach platform on a 42-footer. Stevie Potts, son of Scout founder Steve Potts, seized on the idea several years ago when he saw a Lazzara 92 with a side balcony. The side-platform application would be ideal for outboard-powered boats, Stevie thought, since it would free up transom space. The Scout 420 LXF’s beach platform turned into a home run for the builder. All 420s currently under build have this option. (It will soon be offered on the builder’s upcoming 380 LXF too.) “I played with the drawings

F

for four years,” Stevie Potts says. “My father wasn’t buying into the idea at first, so I ended up hand-building the prototype. We put a lot of engineering into it to make it work. In fact, we overbuilt it for structural integrity.” The platform is arguably the crown jewel of the 420 LXF, which also has a touch-screen helm, double-stepped hull and quad 350 hp outboards that deliver a top speed of 57 knots. The 6-foot-6-inch-long teak platform offers safe, convenient water access. “It eliminates a traditional swim platform,” Steve Potts says. “But the owner can still access the water for swimming, diving and watersports.” Take the next step: scoutboats.com

Like the 420 LXF’s hull, the beach-platform section is vacuum-infused, foam-filled and wrapped in carbon fiber. “I wanted a stiff, lightweight platform that could withstand the bump of another boat or waves crashing down on it,” says Scout’s Stevie Potts. “We chose hydraulic lifts because they work well in salt water and offer a manual bypass.” The teak-covered platform also has a boarding ladder, handgrips and drink holders.

Closed, the 28-inch-wide opening fits seamlessly into the gunwale, maintaining the hull’s structural integrity.

An idea from the superyacht world, the side beach platform is a clever alternative to a traditional aft-platform setup.

ICONIC PEOPLE & PLACES

T H AT C H A R M I NG M A N There are many beach-side bars around the world, but there is only one Foxy’s. By Jake Lamb

h e n i t c o m e s t o Jost Van Dyke in the British Virgin Islands, the population of 298 doesn’t quite seem to match the island’s 13 beach bars. Ask anyone about the best place for a refreshing adult beverage, and they ’ll probably tell you Foxy ’s, followed by a story about their last memorable night there — perhaps accidentally swapping tenders with another boater who enjoyed one too many rum punches. Philicianno “Foxy” Callwood is such a legendary character, known to so many yachtsmen and their friends that in December, CYBA International inducted him into the Charter Yacht Hall of Fame, thanking him for all the fun he contributes to charter vacations that stop at Jost Van Dyke.

W

Grab a stool at Foxy’s Tamarind Bar. You’ll be sold on the fresh-caught seafood, microbrewed beers and attitude-altering, rum-infused drinks like the Dread Fox, Sly Fox and Wreck on the Rocks. Stop p by on the right night and meet the legend. He sometimes sits in his hammock outside the bar, strumming his guitar. Tell him about your travels, and he might sing you your very own tune, made up on the spot. Dig the decor. The bar is covered in T-shirts, flags and everything else people have left behind or signed. Jam on New Year’s Eve. So many people come to the island for Foxy xy’s annual Old Year’s Night party that Great Harbour is filled to the max with boats. Arrive early if you want a spot. The live music, street performers and island cuisine will keep your barefoot toes tapping and taste buds satisfied long after the old year ends and the new one starts.

J O S T VA N DY K E I N 3 S T E P S of the island’s famous beachfront watering holes. It’s where country singer Kenny Chesney filmed the video for “No Shoes, No Shirt, No Problems.” 2 . B E S T S N A P S H O T S Local photographers find picturesque scenes on White Bay, where most of the beach bars on Jost Van Dyke are located. Look for flour-white sand and turquoise water. The road between Great Harbour and White Bay has a beautiful overlook too. 3. TA S T Y C O N C O C T I O N The Painkiller is said to have originated at Soggy Dollar Bar. In its purest form, it’s 2 to 4 ounces Pusser’s rum, 4 ounces pineapple juice, 1 ounce cream of coconut, 1 ounce orange juice and grated fresh nutmeg. Bottoms up!

BROKERAGE

By Jeffrey Moser

TIMELESS ST YLE The 33 Aquariva Super is your at-sea guide to the good life.

he progressive insurance Miami International Boat Show allows me to escape the frozen Northeast and see the wares from the world’s finest boatbuilders. I’m looking forward to Riva’s offerings — the Italian builder will showcase its latest along with an impeccably restored, mahogany-hull 1950s Riva Tritone, a crown jewel in the company’s 173-year history. The Tritone represents what Giuseppe Meneghetti, Riva U.S. brand sales manager, calls “Riva’s tradition, expertise and passion [that’s] been handed down from father to son.” Carlo Riva, the third generation of Riva men, transformed the boutique builder into the epitome of la dolce vita. In the 1950s and ’60s, Hollywood elite and royalty owned Rivas. From the Tritone evolved the Aquarama, which became today’s fiberglass 33 Aquariva Super. She’s a flawless evolution of style, as the Aquariva retains that gorgeous stem-to-stern undulation of her predecessors. From her stainless-steel bow fairlead with integrated hawse to her mahogany and maple foredeck to her teak toe rails and swept windshield, she’s one of the world’s most elegant runabouts. The standard navy-blue hull sets off the dark brightwork and contrasts beautifully with the cockpit’s creamy leather, U-shaped settee abaft the portside helm. By the way, the steering wheel is unique to each Aquariva and, Meneghetti says, is “a [solid] block of aluminum carved on a control numeric machine.” Fine-grain leather covers the wheel. For the captain, a leather helm chair with flip-up bolster provides standing or seated comfort. Friends will flock to the Aquariva. Fortunately,

T

The Aquariva illustrates a 173-year tradition of excellence. there’s room for six on her settee, with a pod-style mahogany table that converts into a larger dining table. For entertaining, there’s a wet bar and refrigerator/ice maker to starboard of the helm. Sun worshipers will appreciate the large transom sun pad, and her swim platform has a hydraulic ladder for easy water access. Another neat feature is the electrically activated canopy, which works like a sports car’s cabriolet top. Flip a switch and

the clever Bimini top shades the helm area and settee. Power is from twin 370 hp Yanmar diesels, providing a 35-plus-knot cruise speed and a top end north of 40 knots. Interested in a 33 Aquariva? Since 2000, Riva has built 250 of them. The model is still under production today as the Aquariva Super, with limited editions by Italian fashion house Gucci and industrial designer Marc Newson. A 2015 base model runs around $700,000; fully optioned or special editions top $1 million. At press time, I found 13 on the brokerage market, from $241,000 for a 2001 to $795,000 for a 2012 Gucci model with custom white hull. At any price, few vessels turn heads and capture hearts like a 33 Aquariva Super.

noticed her as I approached a bridge on the Intracoastal Waterway. She was a 60-foot, Eurostyle express outfitted with all the trimmings. I was confused — not by her 1970s earth-tone finish or picture windows, but by her skipper jockeying about. I thought she was waiting for a bridge opening until she began wafting sideways toward a marina. Was she a NUC? NUC, or “not under command” in the language of the lubberly, is a vessel unable to maneuver as required because of exceptional circumstances. I could see tidal wavelike pulses washing from the boat’s propellers and thrusters. She had plenty of power. Yup, she was a NUC alright, but only because new technology was in command — or not! The yacht’s skipper made several passes at the fuel dock, attempting to land. He gesticulated commands, and his first mate slumped over the bow rail with a dock line, shaking her head in disgust. The dockmaster paced, jabbering into his VHF radio (no doubt calling for reinforcements). Thanks to the miracle of technology known as a joystick, the skipper was able to move ahead, astern and sideways, all effortlessly. The problem was that he couldn’t seem to get the boat and dock in the same place.

TELLTA LES

By Jay Coyle

I

SORRY STEERING Keeping a steady hand on the stick can be harder than it seems.

It seems the joystick is the tool of choice for a generation weaned on video games like Flight Simulator. The device made perfect sense for the application; aircraft-control systems have been manipulated by stick since Wilbur and Orville Wright took off in the early 1900s. Sticks or tillers were popular on boats and cars until race-car driver Alfred Vacheron navigated the 1894 Paris–Rouen race with a

“tiller” shaped like a tire. The steering wheel became the go-to technology on powerboats for generations. As the skipper pirouetted about the fairway, I spotted the fresh paint slathered on his new ride’s hind end. Her home port was a dusty, salt-free state boasting waterfront that was little more than a puddle. Poor fellow. After handling a car’s steering wheel all his life, he was struggling

to park a boat with a 4-inch, cigar-shaped piece of plastic. If only he’d realized that with two engines, plenty of horsepower and a bit of practice, he could bring his boat to the dock with her throttles alone. I reported my sighting of the landsman fumbling with the joystick to a tech-savvy marine industry pal. “Coyle,” he said, “you need to get with the times. Today’s buyers insist on high-tech solutions to boating’s challenges.” “Yes, but driving a boat is a worthy challenge,” I said. “Hell, it’s a pleasure.” “It’s not just driving,” he said. “Your GPS can talk to your engines and thrusters and keep the boat in position.” “So you can do what, then?” I asked. “Crochet the dock lines or take a nap at virtual anchor?” That wasn’t the point, he said. “The bottom line, Coyle: Joystick systems sell boats. They’re good for boating.” “So what’s next?” I grumbled. “Steering with an iPad?” “Old news, my old-fashioned friend,” he said. “If newer skippers can’t drive,” I said, “a NUC’s exceptional circumstances won’t be so exceptional. How will folks like this fellow make it back to the dock?” My pal smiled. “Tractor beam,” he said. “It’s the next big thing!”
