UNIVERSIDAD PEDAGÓGICA NACIONAL FACULTY OF HUMANITIES JOURNAL FOLIOS
Presentation The journal Folios is a publication of the Faculty of Humanities at the Universidad Pedagógica Nacional. In its first phase, under the name of Folios de Literatura e Idiomas, the journal published 14 issues; in its second phase, under its current name, it has more than 15 years of existence. Published twice a year, Folios welcomes papers in the areas of literature, linguistics, classical and modern languages, philosophy, geography, history, and other disciplines of social sciences and humanities. Folios publishes essays, literature reviews, theoretical reflections or developments, and conceptual elaborations. As a scientific journal, it also publishes research reports or advances on topics relevant to its thematic spectrum. Folios is especially interested in papers that deal with topics and problems of pedagogy in the disciplines related to its thematic field. Papers published in different issues of Folios can be research, review, or reflection articles. Research articles must present all the stages of a work, including identification of a research problem or a question, selection and characterization of research populations, creation or selection of a methodology, presentation of research results, and an exposition of a series of interpretations and implications of the obtained results in form of conclusions. Review articles present works that analyze and evaluate theoretical-critical constructs from relevant epistemological and methodological perspectives, supported by a considerably extensive literature search, proposing thus new readings on the studied topics. Reflection articles are the result of a discussion or argumentation with respect to a specific theoretical construct or a real life problem, with sufficient bibliographic support. It is important to mention that Folios does not work with call for papers, but there are closing dates for the publication of each issue in June and in December.

Peer Review Process and Publication of the Journal1 Folios relies on a working team, which consists of an Editing, an Editorial, and a Scientific Committee. The latter two are composed of a group of renowned scholars with an extensive and proven track record of academic training and intellectual production in the area of human and social sciences, both nationally and internationally. The support of these Committees guarantees that the articles included in each issue of the journal are of high academic quality and investigative depth, and they meet the standards established by the academic community for the publication of scientific texts. The Editing Committee carefully reviews each one of the submitted manuscripts to ensure that they meet the journal’s guidelines. Similarly, it evaluates the relevance of the paper regarding the journal’s focus and scope. If the article meets the initial standards, it is sent to peer review. Selected peer reviewers are renowned academics in the subject area of the manuscript. 1
Members of the Editorial/Scientific Committee may change each issue in order to comply with indexing requirements.

It is a double-blind review process, which means that peer reviewers do not know the name of the manuscript’s author(s) and vice versa. All submitted articles are reviewed by at least one member of the editorial team, and by at least one peer evaluator. The peer reviewer, drawing on his or her disciplinary expertise, examines the manuscript and evaluates whether there is an adequate treatment of the topic, taking into account criteria such as: 1) intellectual and investigative depth; 2) originality and relevance of the arguments with respect to existing theories in the field; and 3) in a more general level, whether the article has sufficient clarity, coherence, and cohesion. Based on this, the peer reviewer will comment on the paper and give suggestions on how to improve its quality regarding both form and content. Finally, the reviewer will issue an evaluation concept about whether the paper should be published in the journal. In accordance with the evaluators’ concepts, articles will be returned to the authors with critical comments in order to improve the problematic aspects of the text within an established time period. In this case, the second version of the article must be re-submitted and re-evaluated, this time with FOLIOS

the purpose of verifying whether the corrections suggested by the external evaluator were included. At the closing date of each issue, a determined number of articles will be selected for publication in the corresponding issue from those articles that, at date, have been approved by the evaluators. All articles selected to be published in an issue of Folios will be submitted to a process of copyediting and layout design by the Publishing Office of the University (Fondo Editorial). All changes must always be checked with and approved by the authors. This part of the publication process has two objectives: first, to detect any errors in the writing of the text in order to propose and apply (with the approval of the author) changes considered appropriate; and second, to adapt the text to the design layout and textual typologies used by the journal. Later, papers selected for publication, with the designed layout, are subject to a new revision by the Editing Committee, in order verify whether there are any errors in the publication. This final evaluation aims to detect any possible mistakes in writing and to propose corrections in the designed layout. Finally, selected articles are sent back to the Publishing Office (Fondo Editorial) to proceed with the printing of the new issue of the journal and its online publication. Open Access Policy Folios provides immediate open access to its content on the principle that making research freely available to the public supports a better global exchange of knowledge. The journal does not request any financial contribution for the receipt or publication of articles. Process of Article Publication Any paper submitted to Folios for publication must follow a strict editorial and review process in order to guarantee the highest academic standards in each issue. Upon receipt of the article, the Editing Committee carefully pre-evaluates the text. If the article meets

the initial standards, such as content relevance and stylistic requirements, it is sent to the second phase of the evaluation process, which consists of a doubleblind review by an external peer with extensive academic training in the topic of the paper. This peer reviewer, drawing on his or her disciplinary expertise, examines the manuscript and evaluates whether it has an adequate treatment of the topic, taking into account criteria such as: 1) intellectual and investigative depth; 2) originality and relevance of the arguments with respect to existing theories in the field; and 3) in a more general level, whether the article has sufficient clarity, coherence, and cohesion. Based on this, the peer reviewer will comment on the paper and give suggestions on how to improve its quality regarding both form and content. Finally, the reviewer will issue a review concept about whether the paper should be published in the journal. In accordance with the concept of the external reviewer, the article will be returned to the author with critical comments in order to improve the problematic aspects of the text within an established time period. In this case, the second version of the article must be re-submitted and re-evaluated, this time with the purpose of verifying whether the corrections suggested by the external reviewer were included. Subsequently, if the article fulfills this part of the process, it is selected to be included in the issue under publication. Next, the selected article will be submitted to a process of copyediting and layout design by the Publishing Office of the University (Fondo Editorial). All changes must always be checked with and approved by the authors. This part of the publication process has two objectives: first, to detect any errors in the writing of the text in order to propose and apply (with the approval of the author) changes considered appropriate; and second, to adapt the text to the design layout and textual typologies used by the journal. Later, papers selected for the specific issue of the journal are subject to a new revision by the Editing Committee, in order verify that there are no errors in the publication. This final evaluation aims to detect

any possible mistakes in the writing and to propose corrections in the designed layout. Finally, selected articles are sent back to the Publishing Office (Fondo Editorial) to proceed with the printing of the new issue of the journal and its online publication. Author Guidelines Articles submitted to Folios should not exceed 25 sheets. They should be in Word document, using 12-point Times New Roman font, 1.5 line spacing, and normal margins. The heading of each work must contain the title of the article (in Spanish and English), first and last names of the author, institutional affiliation, and email address. Abstracts in both Spanish and English must be included immediately following the heading, and they should not exceed 250 words. Subsequent to this, there must be listed three to five keywords. With regard to titles, citations, and references, the article should follow the APA standards established for periodical publications. The Editorial Committee of the journal will reserve the right to make any modifications they consider appropriate in the application of these standards. Manuscripts will be subject to an editorial process, where the Editorial Team will carefully pre-evaluate the texts to determine its relevance and compliance with these guidelines. If the article meets the initial standards established by Folios, it will be sent to external peer reviewers, who will anonymously determine whether the article should be published or not.
