Welcome!
Short film? Short film!
For more than a quarter-century, Leuven has been the central stage for Belgium’s biggest short film festival at the beginning of December. A festival that focuses on a unique type of film - short filmswhich, in terms of genre-diversity and talent, doesn’t have to play second fiddle to feature films. On the contrary, there is no film world more vibrant than that of short films. Besides fiction, the festival is also showing animation, short documentaries, non-narrative and innovative visual pieces, short films for children, virtual reality shorts and so much more.
Rising talent and big names
Kortfilmfestival Leuven is, first and foremost, an exploratory journey along the talent of the future: plenty of Flemish creators who are now making waves in cinemas, started their career in Leuven. Lukas Dhont and Robin Pront are prime examples, with their newly released and wildly successful films Close and Zillion. And also internationally, many big names often took their first steps in filmmaking with a short film; you can discover them in the programme Big Names, Short Films. Other than that, many established professionals make short films because of the inimitable freedom this form has to offer.
And the award goes to…
At the heart of the festival are the competitions where short films contend for the prize of Best Short Film. Both jury and audience crown their favourites within the European and Flemish competitions. No unimportant feat, since some winners of the festival are automatically placed on the long list of estee med prizes like the Oscars, The European Film Award and the BAFTA’s.
Denmark and artificial intelligence
Traditionally, the festival also picks some thematic emphases. This year, there is a focus on Denmark, a spotlight on the work of actress and director Veerle Baetens and a programme filled with the wondrous world of artificial intelligence (AI). This theme was also the inspiration behind the poster image this year: which was designed by AI and references HAL9000 from the film 2001: A Space Odyssey, possibly the most famous AI-character in film history. At the accompanying AI Expo, you can try your hand at an AI art generator yourself.
Furthermore, there are many other side-activities, like a continuous showing of the newest film by ar tist Rinus Van de Velde, conversations with film creators, professional activities and a cosy pop-up bar. Absorb yourself in the most creative melting pot of the film world.

Competition & Award Ceremony
No festival without awards. All films in the Flemish and European Competitions are eligible for both an audience and a jury award for Best Short Film. For the winners of the jury award for live-action fiction, there’s an added plus: this award is Academy Award® Qualifying, ensuring a spot on the long list for the Oscars. Additionally, the festival jury nominates one film from the European Competitions for the European Film Awards, aka the European equivalent of the Oscars.
The Peer Award returns for a third time, fellow filmmakers view and judge each other’s films. The winner gets a seat on next year’s jury.
In addition to the jury and audience award for Best Short Film, the Flemish Competition offers many other awards, inlcuding Best Cinematography, Best Debut, Best Acting Performance, the Humo Award and the Press Prize awarded by the UBFP and UFK.
Last but not least, Kortfilmfestival Leuven is the place where the winner of the Pitch your Script contest is announced and where the sought-after VAF Wildcards are presented.
The award ceremony of the festival will take place December 10th at 20h. The award ceremony for the VAF Wildcards will be on December 4th at 17h.

European Competition
Even outside the country's borders, Kortfilmfestival Leuven has been an important player for years. After all, the festival helps determine which short films end up on the longlist for the Oscars, the BAFTA's and the European Film Awards. Unsurprisingly, the number of submissions of films who want to enter this talent show, increases each year.
This year, the European Competition is expanded for the first time with animation films and documentaries. Because of this, the European Competition is even more varied than previous years. Come discover the films and cast your vote: because both the jury and the public hand out an Award for Best European Short film.

Best of European Film Awards
The European Film Awards (EFA) - The European Oscars if you will - are gaining more and more prestige over the last few decades. Some leading film festivals, including Kortfilmfestival Leuven, decide which short films are eligible for an EFA. From that longlist, the organisation then chooses five nominees. Who eventually wins, will become clear on December 10th. A part of the candidates will be shown in two programmes: block 1 encompasses the five short films, who will have gained a final nomination, block 2 the personal favourites from the longlist selected for you by Kortfilmfestival Leuven.

Both young, driven students and established names, such as the pioneer of Flemish animation: Raoul Servais.Flemish Competition: Documentary
The short documentary is on the rise. The short format is ideal for small, but often gripping stories or short, but striking portraits. This year there are a remarkable number of intimate films with a very personal touch. That is probably not a coincidence, after a long period of self-isolation and reflection. And yet, there are also many films, that venture into the world, from diverse neighbourhoods in Brussels, to Marrakesh and California.

Artist in Focus: Marc James Roels
Fifteen years ago, director Marc James Roels first attended the festival with Mumbler, for which he received a Special Jury Mention. Two years later he came back with the harsh film A Gentle Creature, which received the Jury Award. The ensuing track record is nothing short of impressive: Oh Willy became the most awarded Flemish short film ever, Ce magnifique gâteau won the Grand Prix in Clermont-Ferrand, and they are currently conquering Netflix with the masterpiece The House. Marc James Roels will also give a master talk on Tue. 6/12.

ZED VesaliusThe Yin and Yang of Short Film Storytelling
Professor Richard Raskin, born in the US but affiliated with the Danish University of Arhus since 1983, has been researching the uniqueness of short film for more than 50 years. His latest book, The Yin and Yang of Short Film Storytelling, confirms him as the leading contemporary researcher in short film theory, technique and strategies. In his book, he applies his paradigm to ten short films, five of which are shown in full in this programme, each time accompanied by a pre-recorded commentary by Prof Raskin. A wildly fascinating exploration of short film theory.

Kiev, Mariupol, Donetsk, ... Since the invasion of Russia, the world learned many names of Ukrainian cities. One could almost forget that these cities had completely different connotations before the war and formed the background of a lot of Ukrainian short films. With the help of Bardak, the annual short film festival in the city of Kharkiv, the festival presents a programme of six short films that together tell the story of Ukraine. Stories of life before the invasion, but also of the conflict that started much earlier for a lot of Ukrainians, with annexation of Crimea and the war in Donbas region in 2014.
The city of Kharkiv, home to the Bardak Short Film Festival and one of Ukraine's most important universities, was bombed at the start of the invasion in February. Prof Lien Verpoest (KU Leuven) has since hosted her Ukrainian colleague Prof Pshenychnykh and will provide an introduction to the programme.

Two more Oscar nominations and one Oscar would follow. A master class from an inspiring director who considers short films not so much as a stepping stone to a full-length feature, but as a fully-fledged and valuable film form.
Pitch Your Script Sat. 10/12 (15h) in Auditorium
Ten short film scenarios were selected for a class in pitching. Time to practice for real and pitch ideas to an audience and a professional jury. Afterwards, the selected screenwriters go on a speed date with ten producers.
