what to expert – admissions advice

By Vicki Wilson One of the most interesting and rewarding roles of an Admissions Director at a skilled nursing facility is assisting in the admission of Residents.

The reasons a Resident may chose to enter a skilled nursing facility vary. They may be coming from home, from another nursing facility or, most often, from a hospital. They may require short-term rehabilitation, with the goal to return home as safely and quickly as possible, or they may need long-term nursing care and, from now on, will call our campus “home.” Many obvious questions arise during the admissions process: nursing and therapy requirements, physician visits, medications, and therapy goals.

Knowing what to expect alleviates the anxiety of a change in health or living conditions.

Questions of what to bring from home are a major concern. Personal necessities include at least seven changes of season-appropriate clothing, Page 2

night clothing, a sweater. slippers, socks and sturdy shoes with non-slip soles.

Items such as shampoo, toothpaste, and denture fixatives are supplied by the facility but Resident may prefer to bring their own brands. Walkers, canes and wheelchairs usually accompany the resident to the facility. If these appliances are available from home, they are already designed to fit the person and may be more comfortable to use than those owned by the facility.

Taking money, valuables or family heirlooms to a nursing facility is discouraged. However, quilts, family pictures and small remembrances help create a homey atmosphere. That helps residents feel comfortable, even during short-term stays.

Visitors often ask for gift ideas, and I suggest small radios or cassette players with music, books on tape, crafts, drawings and school projects from grandchildren, addressed postage-

paid stationary, and old family videos.

Visits and telephone calls are anxiously awaited each day.
