From Dec. 16 to 24 in Caracas, Venezuela, the busy city streets are closed off before 8 a.m. to motor traffic. This allows the streets to be open to traffic on ‘4-wheelers’. It has been customary in Venezuela to attend Misa de Aguinaldo (Early Morning Mass) and by closing traffic off to bulky cars and buses, everyone can skate to mass on time.

Clement Clarke Moore didn’t want “‘Twas the Night Before Christmas” published. He wrote the poem for his family to celebrate Christmas in 1922, but felt the poem was beneath his talents, so when it was published after a friend sent it to a publisher and became a huge hit, he denied authoring it for nearly 15 years. 401 South St. Bldg. 2A, Village Station • Chardon •

Merry Christmas
The Christian community in India has many Christmas traditions that would be familiar to us, such as attending church services, singing carols and exchanging gifts. However, they do not decorate a traditional Christmas tree: instead they decorate banana or mango trees. They also make sure that they have a large stock of home-made sweets for visiting family and friends and often place clay lamps on the roof of their house to celebrate the birth of Jesus.
May the promise, hope and peace of His love fill your heart this Christmas

In Italian folklore, an old witch delivers gifts and candy to children on Epiphany Eve (Jan. 5). Santa’s competitor, La Befana, is usually portrayed as an old lady riding a broomstick, usually covered in soot, as she enters homes through chimneys. Very similar to the tradition of leaving cookies and milk for Santa, children will leave wine and food out for the Befana.

It is celebrated with the baking of ‘Christopsomo’ or ‘Christ bread.’ Families decorate the crust of the large, sweet loaves with symbols of their professions. Christmas trees are not traditional in Greece. Instead, most houses have a bowl with a piece of wire across it. They tie a piece of basil to the wire and fill the bowl with water to keep the basil alive. Sprinkling the water from the bowl around the house is thought to keep bad spirits away.

Australians enjoy a hot summer Christmas rather than the cold European and North American white Christmas. Instead of sitting inside by the fire, Australians enjoy the sun by having pool parties and barbecues, or by going to the beach to build sandcastles instead of snowmen. Seafood is popular instead of a hot roast turkey.

Radish figures line the central plaza of Oaxaca, Mexico on Dec. 23 and 24. Nativity scenes, conquistadors, dancers, historical and mythological events are sculpted from radishes by Mexican artisans and add to the colorful holiday celebration. El Festival de los Rabanos (The Festival of Radishes) is a one-of-a-kind festival that features dance, food and delicately carved radishes.

In Lebanon, about two weeks before Christmas, children plant seeds in cotton wool. They water them every day leading up to Christmas and when the seeds have sprouted and grown green stems, they add them to a nativity scene, surrounding the manger with grass.
Ethiopians call the Christmas celebrations ‘Ganna’ and celebrate Christmas Day on Jan. 7. Traditionally, Ethiopians fast completely on Christmas Eve (Jan. 6) and then get dressed in a special white garment called a ‘shamma’ at dawn and go to a church service to celebrate. Christmas food in Ethiopia includes a traditional dish called ‘wat’, which is a thick and spicy stew containing meat, vegetables and sometimes eggs.

In Europe, they once decorated their Christmas trees with white sugar candy sticks. A church official bent the ends to make it look like a shepherd’s crook. They were passed out at the services to children to keep them content during the services. It wasn’t until the 1900s that the stripes were put in the candy canes as we know them today.

In a small Mexican village, it was a custom to place gifts for the Christ Child in front of the church manger on Christmas Eve. One Christmas, a young boy, having nothing to give, knelt outside in the snow to pray. In the spot where he knelt, legend says, a beautiful plant with scarlet leaves miraculously grew, and the boy presented the poinsettia as his gift.

Most of Santa’s reindeer have male-sounding names, such as Blitzer, Comet and Cupid. However, male reindeer shed their antlers around Christmas, so the reindeer pulling Santa’s sleigh are likely not male, but female.

On Dec. 16, 1965, astronauts Walter “Wally” Schirra Jr. and Thomas P. Stafford were orbiting earth in Gemini 6. Just before they were due to return to Earth, the pair reported they saw a UFO. “We have an object, looks like a satellite going from north to south, probably in polar orbit. Looks like he might be going to re-enter soon. You just might let me pick up that thing. I see a command module and eight smaller modules in front. The pilot of the command module is wearing a red suit.” Then, Schirra and Stafford started to play a harmonica and a set of sleigh bells they had managed to smuggle on board, to the tune of “Jingle Bells.” It was the first song ever performed in space. The duo had practiced the surprise performance by doing a few run-throughs on Earth. Mission Control had no idea it was coming.

A Yule log is an enormous log that is typically burned during the Twelve Days of Christmas (Dec. 25 - Jan. 6). Some scholars suggest that the word yule means “revolution” or “wheel,” which symbolizes the cyclical return of the sun. A burning log or its charred remains is said to offer health, fertility, and luck as well as the ability to ward off evil spirits.

Santa Claus, also known as Saint Nicholas and Father Christmas is a legendary figure derived from the Dutch figure of Sinterklaas. Saint Nicholas inspired the Christian figure Sinterklaas. He was a 4th Century Christian bishop in the province of Byzantine Anatolia. He was famous for giving generous gifts to the poor. In the Netherlands, Belgium and Luxembourg, Saint Nicholas is an elderly man with white hair and a long full beard. He wore a long red cape and distributed presents.

Christmas — that magic blanket that wraps itself about us, that something so intangible that it is like a fragrance. It may weave a spell of nostalgia. Christmas may be a day of feasting, or of prayer, but always it will be a day of remembrance — a day in which we think of everything we have ever loved.” ~ Augusta E. Rundel

Santa Claus is based on a real person, St. Nikolas of Myra (also known as Nikolaos the Wonderworker, Bishop Saint Nicholas of Smyrna, and Nikolaos of Bari), who lived during the fourth century. Born in Patara (in modern-day Turkey), he is the world’s most popular non-Biblical saint, and artists have portrayed him more often than any other saint except Mary. He is the patron saint of banking, pawnbroking, pirating, butchery, sailing, thievery, orphans, royalty and New York City.

Christmas stockings allegedly evolved from the tale of a poor man with three daughters who couldn’t afford the dowry to have them married. One night, St. Nicholas dropped a bag of gold down the man’s chimney so that his oldest daughter would be able to get married, and the bag fell into a stocking that was drying by the fire.

“We hear the beating of wings over Bethlehem and a light that is not of the sun or of the stars shines in the midnight sky. Let the beauty of the story take away all narrowness, all thought of formal creeds. Let it be remembered as a story that has happened again and again, to men of many different races, that has been expressed through many religions, that has been called by many different names. Time and space and language lay no limitations upon human brotherhood.” ~ “New York Times” Dec. 25, 1937

T hank you for choosing us!
Christmas crackers or bon-bons are a fun item to celebrate with in the United Kingdom and Commonwealth countries. The cracker is a cardboard tube wrapped in holiday wrapping twisted at the ends. You hold on to one side of the twisted end, another person holds the other, and you pull. The cracker will split unevenly with a bang, and the luckier individual will be holding the longer end of the cracker, which holds a special prize. Crackers are also a part of New Year’s celebration in some places.

Despite what you might think about Santa’s ability to visit every child’s home in one night, it’s not as great a feat as you might think. Technically, Santa would have 34 hours to complete his task thanks to the International Date Line and his sleigh would only have to travel at 99.999999 percent of the speed of light assuming he only visits over the 800 million houses entire surface area of the Earth.
