he district would like to extend a heartfelt THANK YOU! to the community for the support and passage of the May levy. Our Board of Education, staff, and students worked hard to share our story so that a clear picture of the value of Cardinal Local Schools is realized. The district renewed it’s clear focus on returning Cardinal Local Schools to the highest levels of excellence for the benefit of our students. This focus, paired with a renewed excitement about some of the positive changes districtwide, should make for another exciting year. We will continue to provide the necessary upgrades for our technology infrastructure, we will continue to utilize our website as means to communicate our accomplishments, and we will maintain our commitment to provide our students with the necessary tools that are required for success in the 21st century.

Students and teachers in the Cardinal Local School District will be working to strengthen the Ohio Improvement Process in which we have collaborative teams working to provide best practice in curriculum, instruction, and assessment for all students. We are entering our third year in recognizing distinguished alumni for their contributions in athletics and in life. We also welcome alumni and continue to provide an open invitation to join our

Alumni Association so that we can share all of the good news that is happening in the district.

The mission of the Cardinal School community is to provide an engaging, motivating, and safe environment for the development of all students to be successful, productive, lifelong learners and responsible members of society. As I reflect on the words in this statement I focus on the following: engaging, motivating, safe, all students, life-long learners, and responsible.

As I read these words, I look to educational guru Michael Fullan who states that schools have an overarching moral purpose which is “to sustain success for all students so that failure is not an option.” In fact, I believe that our community as a whole has a moral purpose to make certain that failure is not an option. As a school community we have to focus on designing and delivering engaging work, motivating all students by strengthening our relationships with them, instilling the desire for continued learning throughout their lives, and teaching and modeling what responsible behavior looks like so that students are ready to thrive in the world they will inherit.

Changes at CMS/CHS this year ...

It was transition year for the schools.

Dr. Sabol joined the High School in the second semester after Mr. Hunter resigned. She and Mr. Andy Cardinal shared duties at the Middle School and High School during the second semester, their combined leadership helped to bridge the challenges in taking care of staff and families; everyone should be commended for how well they worked together to make the transition a positive one.

Dr. Sabol praised the teachers at both levels for their hard work and dedication to students and for continuing their work in the midst of change and an uncertain future.

Dr. Sabol will remain the Cardinal High School principal for the 20172018 school year and Mr. Cardinal will serve as the Cardinal Middle School principal.

Cardinal Schools 2016 Hall Of Fame Classes Cardinal High School inducted four new members into the Athletic Hall of Fame and four new members into the Distinguished Alumni Hall of Fame on Oct. 1, 2016. In addition, Cardinal recognized the contributions of former Superintendent A. J. Jordak with a “Lifetime Achievement Award.” A list of the 2016 Athletic Hall of Fame Inductees follows.

Jason Driscoll (1996) -- Jason Driscoll had a standout athletic career at Cardinal High School. He was an all-star basketball player but is best remembered for his outstanding baseball career. He was a key member of the State Runner-up baseball team and leads or is near the top of almost every offensive and pitching statistical category for both a season and a career. After graduating from Cardinal, Jason was a four-year letter winner at The Ohio State University and also played professionally in the Frontier League.

Josh Yoder (1996) -- Josh Yoder was one of the best hitters ever to wear a Cardinal uniform and was a leader on the 1996 State Runner-up baseball team. A four-year letter winner, Josh was a First Team CVC selection in 1995 and 1996. Josh batted .520 during his senior season with 9 home runs and 59 RBI. Shawn Ebbert (1995) -- Shawn Ebbert was a standout wrestler at Cardinal High School who won the state championship twice – at 160 lbs as a junior and at 152 lbs as a senior. He had a 39-3 record as a senior and an overall career record of 133 wins and just 23 losses.

Donald Hostetler (1962) -- Don Hostetler was the first Cardinal High School studentathlete to win a state championship, achieving this accomplishment in the half mile in the pouring rain in 1960. Don specialized in the half mile but ran many other events as well. He set school records in the 440 and the 880 (both of which have since been broken.)

Names of the 2016 Distinguished Alumni Hall of Fame Inductees follows.

Dr. Stephanie Melillo (2001) -- Stephanie Melillo is a world-recognized figure in the field of paleoanthropology. After graduating from Cardinal, she attended Case Western Reserve University, Department of Anthropology, graduating summa cum laude in 2005. She received a doctorate from the Stanford University Department of Biology in 2011.

Stephanie has been a member of the WorsanoMille Paleontological Research Project in Afar, Ethiopia, since 2006. Stephanie was part of the team that discovered a previously unknown member of humankind’s family tree, Australopithecus deyiremeda, in 2009.

Amy Lukas (1989) -- Amy Lukas is a founding partner of Infinite Scale Design Group, a sports design consultancy. Prior to starting Infinite Scale, Amy was the design project manager for the Look of the Games at the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City.

With Infinite Scale, Amy has worked on several projects, including Super Bowls XXXIX-XLIII, the concept design for Yankee Stadium, the

Kevin Pollari (1981) – Kevin Pollari has had an exceptional career in providing leadership for major, billion-dollar level technology units for two of the most successful, highly regarded consulting firms, first Accenture and now Deloitte Consulting. He has published papers and made major presentations worldwide. Aside from his very successful professional career, Kevin is distinguished for his philanthropic and community involvement.

Dr. Felicia Ladd Dixon (1962) – Felicia Dixon’s career as a specialist in education for gifted and talented students has led to national and international recognition. She is the author of over 40 publications and has made many presentations at national conferences. She has also served on the board of directors of the National Association for Gifted Children, and she has chaired or served on many national committees. She received the prestigious Early Scholar Award in 1995. Felicia retired in 2008 and is currently an Emeriti Professor of Psychology at Ball State, teaches online classes to help train teachers, and is also an educational consultant, working with schools in Singapore.

Ovations Hand out Music Awards Congratulations to the following individuals who have received Ovations awards for their roles in the spring musical.

Senior Jeremy K., Acting Award; Junior Lillian R., Wild Card Award (for acting); Senior Max W., MVP and $500 scholarship; Vocals Award went to the singing nuns and the Tech Award went to the show’s tech crew. Ovations are run by the Geauga Council for Arts & Culture and all Geauga County Schools are invited to participate.

Musical directors from each school are invited to see other district’s musicals and winners are chosen in each category.

Cardinal High Receives Bronze Award Cardinal High School earned a National Ranking of Bronze from the U.S. News & World Report in their Best High Schools rankings. The 2017 Best High Schools ranking awards the top 6,041 public high schools with gold, silver, and bronze medals. Of 866 high schools in the state of Ohio, U.S. News ranks Cardinal High School at 197.

According to U.S. News, they partnered with RTI International, a science research firm, to produce the 2017 Best High Schools rankings. The rankings are based on these key principles: that a great high school must serve all of its students well, not just those who are college bound, and that it must be able to produce measurable academic outcomes to show it is successfully educating its student body across a range of performance indicators.

A four-step process is used to determine Best High Schools. Schools must pass each step in succession to move on for consideration in the next step. In step one, researchers compare math and reading proficiency scores to determine if students are performing better than statistically expected for the state. The second step compares test scores for those who U.S. News defines as disadvantaged (black, Hispanic, low-income) to see if they perform at or better than the state average. If a school passes the first two steps, the third step requires the school to have a graduation rate of 75 percent or higher. And finally, in step four, schools are judged on college-readiness performance, using Advanced Placement (AP) test data as the benchmark for success. 26 percent of

“We are thrilled to see the report with our national ranking of Bronze from U.S. News & World Report,” said Superintendent Dr. Scott J. Hunt. “Administrators and educators have been working diligently over the past several years to implement more advanced course options at Cardinal High School including the AP program and College Credit Plus courses. It is extremely satisfying for everyone in the District to see that the efforts are paying off, what an exciting honor for this District.”

Jordak Elementary and Cardinal Intermediate Schools The 2016-2017 school year was filled with a love of learning and lots of laughter. Huskie Pride was everywhere and filled our classrooms and hallways with our most precious and important of all assets . . . our children! Students worked extremely hard to follow the expectation of the PRIDE Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports. Students were able to buy fun items with their earned Huskie Bucks when the Huskie Pride cart would be open for business. In addition, students were able to purchase coupons such as Lunch with the Principal from their classroom teacher with their Huskie Bucks. Our efforts in implementing and demonstrating Huskie Pride earned Jordak Elementary a Bronze Award from the state in December of 2016.

Jordak Elementary Receives an ‘A’ in their Performance Indicator Score We were delighted to learn and share last spring, that the Ohio Department of Education had given Jordak Elementary a Performance Indicator Score of an ‘A’! The state report card performance score is comprised of three indicators: performance index, state tests, and gifted students. The grade is an indication of how well students are or are not meeting grade-level expectations in each of the three areas. Up until the 2017-18 school year, Jordak Elementary School only housed grades K-2. There are no state tests at these grade levels, therefore a performance index cannot be calculated as this is tied directly to state tests. The grade rating at this level is determined solely by the identification of and services provided for the gifted student population. This is an indicator that Jordak Elementary has met and that status is clearly noted on the state report card. Our staff works extremely hard to bring the absolute best education to our youngest students, we’re ecstatic to have the state recognize the dedication of our students, staff and families.

Third-Grade Reading Guarantee and Assessment Again this year, students in grades K – 3 were bound by the Ohio Third Grade Reading Guarantee law, which requires students in those grades to be on track (reading at grade level) by the end of third grade or they are to be retained (with a few exceptions). We are happy to report that at the beginning of the year there were 10 third graders not on track, but by the end of the school year, ALL third grade students attained the scores necessary either on the Ohio State Test or on MAP to go on to fourth grade! No one was retained as a result of the Third Grade Reading Guarantee!

Teachers worked diligently during their TBT time (Teacher-Based Team) looking at student data and making decisions to flexibly group students that would most positively impact student achievement. After-School Intervention was provided by some teachers to help get students on track for fourth grade! In addition to all of our students K-4 taking MAP three times this year, our grade-three-and-four students participated in the Ohio State Tests: ELA (grades 3 & 4), Math (grades 3 & 4), and Social Studies (grade 4). Grade three students took these tests in December and April. Grade four students took these tests in April and early May. It was a time of hard work, dedication, and TEAMWORK at CIS! Our Huskie Pups worked like ROCK STARS every day and learned the value of their efforts! Our staff and administration are as proud as peacocks; our children showed everyone what Huskie Pride really means at Cardinal Local Schools!

District Spelling Bee Third through eighth-grade students at JES, CIS, and CMS made Cardinal Local Schools PROUD by participating in the District Spelling Bee on Friday, Jan. 13, 2017. The Spelling Bee was organized by Miss Farrow (fourth-grade ELA Teacher) and Mrs. Cameron (fifth-grade ELA teacher).

Cardinal Schools Superintendent, Dr. Hunt, along with Miss Farrow and Mrs. Cameron served as judges, and Ms. Bearer, Principal, was the word caller. After an epic 18-round battle, the District crowned sixth-grader Hennessy M. as the 2016-17 Spelling Bee Champion! Hennessy beat out 23 other spellers from grades three-eight, winning on the word “closure.” Coming in second was sixth-grader Gavin B., third-place went to third-grader Elisabeth M. and rounding out the top four was seventh-grader Stevie H. Congratulations to our winners and to all of the students who participated in the bee!

JES/CIS Parent Teacher Association We offer our most sincere Thank You to the PTA! This group of parents and teachers worked tirelessly on a daily basis to make sure that our students had everything they needed to be successful academically and brightened the world of learning for everyone! In addition, they made sure to help teachers with many instructional needs, such as magazines, technology for our children, and dinner for teachers on conference nights, among other treats and services throughout the year! They spent countless hours, always smiling and bringing a ray of sunshine into our schools, for the Scholastic Book Fairs, the Huntsburg Pumpkin Festival, field trips for K – 4, COSI assemblies, Holiday Headquarters (where they made sure every student had money to purchase gifts for their family), organizing Grandparents Day, the Plant Sale, the FourthGrade Graduation Ceremony, helping with Fun Day, and much, much more!! Thank you for all of your support throughout the school year! The staff and students truly appreciate your generous dedication and Huskie Pride!

The staff and students of Jordak and Cardinal Intermediate are looking forward to another exciting year for 2016-2017! Thank you Middlefield,Huntsburg, and Parkman parents and community members for your continuing support! You are essential to our children’s success and you make academic excellence possible! We appreciate everything you do at home, in the community, and at our schools to help our children learn and grow into loving, respectful, intelligent, successful, responsible citizens! Eighth-grade students visit at battleground during their field trip to Gettysburg, Pennsylvania in May.

Eighth Graders Visit Gettysburg Some eighth graders spent a few days in May on a field trip to Gettysburg, Pennsylvania.

While there, students had the opportunity to tour the National Military Park, battlefields, take a ghost tour, see the National Cemetery, visit Seminary Ridge Museum, and see the Flight 93 Memorial in Shanksville. It was a very busy two days, but everyone enjoyed it and had a great time. Thank you PTA and Mr. Kruse for organizing yet another educational and exciting trip.

Community Connections Partnering with the Volunteers Program facilitated by the Geauga County JFS, several Volunteers assisted our Huskie Pups and teachers in the classroom with all aspects of their learning. Additionally, nine students from Cardinal High School earned Community Service Hours by giving back to the elementary campus as student volunteers.

They worked one-on-one and in small groups with students who needed that little extra help with reading, math, and other subjects! They also spent time establishing relationships with students, which is a priceless commodity in education. When our students feel cared for, they work harder and learn more! Teachers understand that first and foremost, they need to establish relationships with their students and they work daily to do so; having our volunteers/tutors do the same only increases the level of learning in our schools!
