QUALITY PROFILE Cardinal Families: The Cardinal Local School District is pleased to be one of nearly 100 school districts throughout Ohio to release a more comprehensive, community-oriented companion to the State’s School District Report Card. Called a “Quality Profile,” the report includes additional accountability measures that define a high quality education that are not included in the State’s report.

The Quality Profile helps to evaluate the effectiveness of a school district beyond standardized testing and other statistical measures. The Profile is based on six categories: academics, arts, student leadership and activities, fiscal stewardship, parent and community involvement, and student services.

Over the last several years, participating districts have been surveying their residents to determine those factors they value in their child’s education that are not being measured by the state, then incorporate those factors in a more comprehensive profile that measures the education components that the community considers most important.

Now in its fourth year of development, and being released statewide for a third time, the Quality Profile is sponsored by the Alliance for High Quality Education, a statewide education consortium that works to improve educational opportunities for all students and to represent member districts on matters of educational policy and funding.

As most of you know, the education and opportunities provided to students in the Cardinal district simply can not be measured using only tests and statistics. We are proud to provide this comprehensive report to share all of the positive, high-quality achievements being made by Huskie students!

A successful school district places a high degree of importance on ensuring that all children have the opportunity to reach their full potential inside and outside of the classroom. This profile helps characterize the overall educational value of our school district in areas that matter most in our community.

Cardinal High School inducted 10 new members into the National Honor Society on Dec.16, 2016. New members are Virginia T., Megan M., Madelyn D., Alexandria K., Anna A., Emily K., Brendan W., Hayden C., Joseph B., & Nicholas S.

• 90.6% of Cardinal High School students graduate in four years • The CHS Class of 2016 received a total of 64 scholarships for postsecondary education • The College Credit Plus program allowed 2016 seniors to earn a total of 255 college credits, most of which were earned here at Cardinal • Cardinal High School offers 12 College Credit Plus (CCP) classes giving students an opportunity to earn up to 39 college credits • The World Language Lab at CHS allows students to learn French, Latin, Chinese, or German languages via online learning • Additional Advanced Placement and 11 additional Honors classes are offered at CHS • Every student in grades 9-12 has an iPad mini to complete coursework • 6 computer science courses are available for students at CHS including web development, design, programming, and coding • 780 Google Chromebooks are available to students in grades K-8 to use for classwork, research, collaboration, and testing

• The District has 943 active Google users (includes students in grades 2-12 and staff) • Through Google, the district has created 317,000 internal shared files; and an additional 4,000 have been shared outside the district • On average, the district receives 12,000 emails and sends approximately 2,000 monthly • Teachers in grades 3-12 utilize Google Classroom to create and collect student assignments digitally and utilize time-saving features to work more efficiently • Middle school students have access to a green room, iPad (for recording) and video editing software used to record school-wide announcements and projects • 8th grade students are prepared for the transition to the high school 1:1 program with access to an iPad cart (along with all 8th grade teachers having an iPad) • High School students have access to a green room, video cameras, video editing software and equipment, still cameras, a poster printer, and a photo printer

• The District participates in Early Release Wednesdays to provide teachers time to collaborate and discuss what and how students are learning, how to meet student learning needs, and study student assessment data • In 2015 two CHS teachers were chosen from 100 applicants to participate in the state’s Trailblazer Teachers program to assist other educators in incorporating technology into their classrooms • Another CHS teacher was chosen to present at the International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE) conference on applying digital strategies in the classroom

QUALITY PROFILE The positive, high-quality achievements being made by Huskie students begins with our excellent academic programs

ACADEMICS

This group of CMS sixth graders participated in the Greater Cleveland Council of Teachers of mathematics competition on Feb. 18, 2017. Participants include Tim M., Jenna O., Nathan L., Audrey A., Owen V., Ava G., and Ana F.

• Seventh-grade students at CMS are able to begin an Advanced Pathway route of study to prepare for College Prep classes in high school.

• Eighth graders at CMS can earn high school credits by taking Algebra I and Physical Science, thus allowing them to start at CHS on an advanced track.

• 32 CMS students competed in the 2017 Greater Cleveland Council of Teachers of Mathematics competition bringing home a variety of awards ribbons.

• The One School, One Book program continues to be a success in the District, expanding from a K-4 project to a K-8 project in 2016. Thanks to generous donations, every student received the book “The One and Only Ivan” to read for the project. Various ELA lessons are incorporated into the classrooms from the book, and it provides a way for students to connect school with their families.

• Cardinal Intermediate School hosted its first ever Science Night in 2016 giving students and their families an opportunity to participate in various experiments from each branch of science.

• Third graders at CIS helped read 3,763,408 books during the 2016 nationwide Read Quest event.

QUALITY PROFILE Participation in performing and visual arts inspires students’ creativity, problem-solving and critical thinking skills.

ARTS • High school students participate in the Lake & Geauga County Juried Junior and Senior High School Art Show at Lakeland Community College.

• Nine high school students had works of art judged in the State Regional Governor’s Art Show in 2016.

• High school students are able to enhance their art skills by taking advanced classes including: Advanced Art, 3-D Art, Art History (CCP course), and Independent Study.

• Starting with the 2016-17 school year, digital photography classes are also offered at the high school level.

• Middle school art students participate in the Middlefield Historical Society art show and the Geauga County Fair Exhibition.

• Art Achievement awards are given out to eight middle school students (two per grade level) each semester.

• K-4 students have art class for 40 minutes once a week; students also

participate in a 30 minute, weekly enrichment art class for one quarter.

• Elementary student artwork is featured throughout the year at Jordak Elementary School and the Board of Education Office.

• Each spring, around a dozen K-4 students have their art selected to be featured in the annual Middlefield Historical Society art show.

• Concert band is offered daily to students in grades 5-12 with students performing two concerts a year at both the middle and high schools.

• The high school concert band represents all instrumentation and continues to increase in size and difficulty of music performed.

• Students in grades 9-12 have earned superior and excellent ratings participating in the Ohio Music Education Association (OMEA) solo and ensemble competitions.

• High school band students have participated in various honors band events including the Chagrin Valley Conference honors band and the Tri-State Honors Band festival held. at Mercyhurst University in Erie, Pennsylvania.

“Art is the signature of civilizations. “ • The CHS Marching Band and Flag Line perform at all varsity football games during halftime, in various festivals throughout the season, and has participated in the annual Woolybear Festival Parade, was featured on Cleveland’s FOX 8 morning show, and marched on the ice at a Cleveland Monsters game.

• The CHS Pep Band performs at most home basketball games for both girls and boys.

• Students in grades K-4 receive 40 minutes of music instruction each week; quarterly enrichment periods give classes an additional 30 minutes of instruction.

• Fourth graders begin using recorders from November up until their concert in the spring as a way to get them excited for 5th grade concert band.

• A Recorder Karate program has been implemented as a way to encourage students to practice and improve on the instrument; as students successfully play a song, they receive a colored “belt” to note their achievement.

• Each elementary grade level performs in one concert a year and high school levels with each group performing two concerts a year.

• Up to eight high school students are selected each year to participate in the CVC Honors Choir; in 2017 one CHS Senior was selected to perform a solo.

• In 2017, nine CHS choir students participated in the OMEA Solo/ Ensemble contest receiving I or II ratings.

• High school students can audition to be part of the 16-member Cardinaires show choir.

• Every year students have an opportunity to audition for the spring musical; the 2017 program is “The Sound of Music” featuring 12 middle school students, 38 high school students, and two elementary students; crew is also made up of student volunteers who do everything from building the sets to staging the lights, to providing hair and makeup for the production.

• CHS students presented “Murder’s In The Heir” as their 2016 Fall Play.

• Many Cardinal athletes continue their athletic careers in college.

• Cardinal Athletes are routinely named to all-conference teams.

• In 2016, a CHS junior set a new school record scoring eight goals in a single soccer game; the feat ties him for seventh in OHSAA history.

• The Varsity soccer team advanced to the Sectional Championship game for the first time in school history during the 2016 season.

• The 2016-17 seventh-grade volleyball team went undefeated posting a 19-0 record.

• The Varsity Volleyball team has been CVC Champions for four consecutive years (2013-14, 2014-15, 2015-16, 2017) • In 2016, a CHS senior set a school record for number of assists in Volleyball with more than 2,000.

• A junior represented Cardinal High School in the 2016 District Golf Tournament.

• The 2016 Varsity Wrestling team includes one female athlete.

• CHS Varsity Volleyball and Varsity Wrestling coaches were both named CVC Coaches of the Year for 2015-16.

• Two student athletes were named CVC MVPs in 2016.

• Cardinal sent two athletes to compete at state meets for both wrestling and track in 2015-16.

• 18 student athletes received CVC All-Academic Awards in 2015-16.

Students learn about positive PRIDE behavior expectations: Rewards given for making positive behavior choices • Incentives include Huskie Bucks, lunch with the Principal, pep rallies, ice cream socials.

• Has led to 50 percent or more reduction in behavior referrals, higher participation, and more respectful individuals • The Cardinal Local School District implements the positive behavior interventions and supports (PBIS) in all buildings and has many incentives in place at each level to demonstrate and encourage students to make positive behavior choices as they relate to being Productive, Respectful, Involved, Determined, and Empathetic.

• In 2016 the District received two bronze awards from the state for their PBIS implementation and results.

• A K-4 Exercise Club gives elementary students a chance to get alert and ready for class with a quick, 10-minute workout routine before school starts.

• Elementary students raise money for the American Heart Association by participating in the Jump Rope for Heart fundraiser each year.

• Students at CIS help collect recyclable papers at the elementary buildings and board office each week.

• Fourth-grade students test math and social studies skills and have an opportunity to earn “Huskie Bucks” by participating in four Entrepreneur Fairs during the year.

• Student councils at CIS, CMS, and CHS are elected by peers and organize events like Spirit Week, school dances, powderpuff football, and blood drives at each building.

• In 2016, six middle school students were selected to be part of the first ROBObots Combat Competition team.

• The CMS Builder’s and CHS Key Clubs work with the East Geauga Kiwanis Club to complete service projects that include volunteering at community events, providing for a family in need at Christmas, and visiting residents in a local assisted living home.

• Middle school students are encouraged to start their own clubs to participate in after school which has led to the development of the Animal Club, the Christian Club, and even a Pokemon Club.

• Future City allows students an opportunity to study and design a model city based on a certain concept; every year three eighthgrade students are chosen to present their model at the state competition in Columbus; each grade also presents their models during a showcase at CMS. • CHS inducted ten new members into the National Honor Society for the 2016-17 school year.

• The CHS Key Club worked closely with the East Geauga Kiwanis Club to organize a drive that collected donations to provide Thanksgiving meals and Christmas gifts to more than a dozen local families in 2016.

• Advanced communications classes and the addition of cameras and green screens at both the middle and high schools are providing students an opportunity to create daily and weekly video announcements.

Educational experiences are enhanced by partnerships between the school district and community.

• Cardinal hosted its first community Wellness Rally in 2016 providing various health and wellness screenings and vendors to employees and residents • CHS hosted local Veterans in November treating them to breakfast and honoring them during a special assembly • Third graders participate in the Bonnie Plants Third Grade Cabbage Program where students who successfully grow the crop can be entered to win a $1,000 scholarship; 2016 saw two students complete the program successfully.

• During the 2015-16 school year, CHS students hosted several blood drives collecting 129 pints of blood for the American Red Cross, netting $750 in scholarship funds.

• In 2016, the Superintendent and high school Principal participated in the MDA Lock-Up event, raising over $1000 for the Muscular Dystrophy Association.

• Every year K-4 students raise money for the American Heart Association by participating in the Jump Rope for Heart event • The District is proud to support the fight against cancer by hosting “Crush Cancer” and “Pink Out” events at athletic contests.

• The district partnered with area organizations and churches to host the first community Family Fun Fest in 2017; the free event provided attendees with food, music, and information on getting active and engaged in our community.

• Cleveland Cavaliers and Westfield Insurance have recognized dozens of students as CAVS Straight A All-Stars providing them with free tickets to a game, t-shirts and a certificate for their academic accomplishment.

• East Geauga Kiwanis Club works closely with our district providing donations, and forming partnerships with Builders and Key Clubs for service projects • Third graders receive dictionaries every year thanks to the generosity of the Burton-Middlefield Rotary Club Great Lakes Growers hosts CHS honors biology students in their greenhouse twice a week where they assist in growing crops and conducting research on growing methods.

• Parent Teacher Partnership, which is facilitated by State Support Team 4, provides opportunities and programming for two way teacher parent dialogue.

• District Task Force on School Operations was formed in 2016 to look at all aspects of the district from buildings and grounds to school finance. This group will make formal recommendations to the board with the focus of saving money and providing a level of quality for students, families, and employees.

• CMS fifth graders participate in the Geauga Park District’s Nature Scopes program as a way to learn more about nature in the area.

• Local businesses such as CVS, Walmart, Great Day Learning Center, Hexpol/Gold Key, churches and organizations support the district with donations of school supplies, and items to provide families for Thanksgiving and Christmas.

• PTO, PTA, and booster groups support students and teachers by hosting fundraisers and giving donations to help purchase classroom supplies, or cover costs for field trips, fees, and other events.
