inter weather doesn’t keep hearty Geauga County residents indoors. There’s simply too much to do. Geauga Park District offers a number of special opportunities to keep you active in winter within your nearby parks. Pack up your cross-country skis and head out to the Wetlands Nature Preserve, Headwaters Park, Eldon Russell Park, Swine Creek Reservation or Beartown Lakes Reservation. For optimal conditions, drive just a bit farther to The Maple Highlands Trail, where a ski trail is groomed from South Street in Chardon to Claridon Troy Road and from Route 608 to Route 322 near Headwaters Park. A popular sledding hill at Beartown Lakes Reservation offers beautiful scenery of a lake, bridge and dam, and paved, woodland and lakeside winter hiking. The sled hill at Orchard Hills Park in Chesterland also gets rave reviews. Try cold-weather camping at Chickagami Park or Headwaters Park, both equipped with tent pads and lean-to shelters with fireplaces to keep you warm all night. Camping reservations are free for Geauga County residents. Visit the Web site or call 440-286-9516 to reserve a site. If you’re already counting the days till spring, there’s no more exciting place to hike in late winter than Swine Creek Reservation, where telltale taps and buckets hang in preparation for Geauga Park District’s sweet maple sugaring operation and annual Sap’s-A-Risin’ celebration in March. For information on winter activities in other parts of the county, or naturalist-led programs, visit http://geaugaparkdistrict.org or call 440286-9516. Feb. 23 and 24 will bring the Huskies back to Punderson for the sled races. Racing classes are six-dog Siberian, six-dog open, four-dog Siberian, four-dog open, and three or two-dog sportsman. The drivers’ meeting starts 9 a.m. Saturday. Races begin at 10 a.m. Saturday and 9:30 a.m. Sunday. For entry forms go to www.siberiancleveland.org/ Punderson-Sled-Dog-Classic.html. Punderson State Park is located at 11755 Kinsman Road in Newbury (44065). Continued on page 2

WANTED TO BUY Back before the Village of Middlefield bought a small tractor to plow the sidewalks, this was how it was done. A wooden v-plow with a one-horse-power engine was all that was needed. A Village employee would actually use his own horse and hitch it up to the Village’s plow. It actually was a very inexpensive way to keep all the sidewalks passable. This method was used until the employee retired.

This photo is of the southeast and west corners of the downtown intersection of Routes 87 and 608 in the 1950s. The business located on the east corner was a Mobil gas station that was operated many years by C. J. Olds and Kenny Barnes. Throughout the years there were many other operators when it later became a Sohio gas station. The employees would come out and actually pump your gas for you. They even washed your windshield and checked your oil. On the west side of the street was the Bishop house that was later moved near the intersection of Routes 608 and 528. Next was Merryfield Electric in the building in the far right edge of the picture was the Home Telephone Company and the Northeast Ohio Credit Bureau.

Jan. 23, 2013

By Mayor Ben Garlich Welcome to 2013. The past year has gone quickly and I’ve certainly enjoyed my first year as mayor of the Village of Middlefield. The goals that we had set for 2012 have been accomplished. The foundation has been laid through the dedication and hard work of so many. All jobs are easy when you have support of qualified and dedicated people. I am very fortunate to be surrounded by individuals that have passion and take ownership with the goal of improving our Village. I am confident Village operations are streamlined and functioning efficiently both operationally and fiscally. Due to the actions taken in 2012, I expect 2013 to be a year of action, excitement and continuous improvement. We have created an environment of partnership with local civic groups, schools and local businesses. I see tremendous potential when all of these facets communicate and work for the good of the whole. We will be working on structuring a solid communication network where all entities will have the opportunity to be heard and contribute. When we develop a real sense of community the benefits will be limitless. Our logo and message “Middlefield Means Business” has received tremendous media support. Many current local businesses have communicated their desire to help support and add value to this initiative, which will only make it stronger. We have many projects and events in the pipeline slated for 2013. In 2013, we will see completion of state and local road projects, several new businesses are coming to our Village, some occupying current structures and others building new facilities. We are very aware cooperation is a powerful tool and we are using this to create discussions that will yield opportunities with surrounding township and Villages to the benefit of all involved. We’ve accomplished a lot but still have a lot to do as we move toward our goal of making Middlefield a location of choice. I thank you for your support and feel honored to be the mayor of Middlefield.

With winter rearing its ugly head, I would like to offer some information regarding preparing for cold weather emergencies. Most of the information included in this article comes from The National Safety Council. Cold weather is particularly dangerous for the very young and the elderly. The Center for Disease Control (CDC) offers these tips for staying warm: wear loose-fitting layered clothes and water repellent outer garments including a hat or hood as much body heat is lost through the head; stretch before shoveling snow and take frequent breaks (preferably out of the elements); avoid working too hard as it strains the heart; cover your mouth to protect your lungs from cold air; drink water and other fluids to avoid dehydration; watch for signs of frostbite such as “pins and needles” feeling followed by numbness and watch for signs of hypothermia (severe drop in body temperature). Including uncontrolled shivering, slow speech, memory loss, stumbling, sleepiness, and extreme tiredness. Do not eat snow it lowers body temperature. The New York City Fire Department (FDNY) offers these tips regarding home heating equipment the leading cause of fires during December, January and February: keep heating devices at least 3 feet from flammable items such as drapes and furniture; ensure proper ventilation for gas fueled heating devices; never use an extension cord to connect a space heater to an outlet; unplug space heaters when they are not in use; look for heaters with automatic shut off features and have wood and coal stoves, fireplaces and chimneys inspected and cleaned by a professional

every year. Regarding vehicles The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) recommends: install quality winter tires with adequate tread; maintain at least a half tank of gas during the winter season; place a winter emergency kit in each car; check your antifreeze levels, battery and ignitions system, brakes, exhaust, fuel/air filters, heater/defroster, lights, oil, thermostat, and windshield wipers. If stranded the CDC suggests: tie a brightly colored cloth to the antenna as a signal to rescuers and raise the hood of the car (if it is not snowing); move anything you need from the trunk to the passenger area; wrap your entire body including your head in extra clothing, blankets or newspapers; stay awake to remain less vulnerable to cold weather health problems; run the motor and heater about 10 minutes every hour with window slightly open; make sure your exhaust pipe is not blocked with snow to reduce the risk of carbon monoxide poisoning; continue to move your arms and legs to improve circulation and stay warm and huddle with other people for warmth. If you follow these tips winter emergencies can be much more manageable. Some things you should keep in your vehicle during winter are: extra blankets, extra dry clothing, tools and jumper cables, windshield washer fluid, perhaps some snacks such as chips, nutrition bars, water or juice, a cell phone can be a life saver and a battery powered weather radio in case the vehicle battery loses power. Be prepared for the hazards of winter cold weather emergencies. Stay Safe. We are pleased to serve you.

What services are available in Geauga County to aid hurting singles, families and the elderly? This was the question the Leadership Class of 2013, Human Services Team chose to address on Dec. 14, 2012 the Leadership Geauga Human Services Day. The goal for the day was to observe and understand the struggles of those who live on or below poverty levels in Geauga County. This goal was accomplished with the help of several private and governmental agencies. The class enjoyed breakfast and a tour of the Geauga County Pleasant Hill Home, a tax-funded facility which provides a haven for the elderly. Most are residents because they have no alternative accommodations. Hands-on work followed at Geauga County Job and Family Services filling grocery bags with donated non-perishable foods for area families. They then toured the Department of Aging and enjoyed an exciting game of chair volleyball with the seniors. Kimm Leininger, of United Way, met with the class at DOA (Department of Aging) and offered updates about the Chardon Healing Fund and the ‘211’ program, a one-call information service available to all county residents. For lunch, each member was given only $3, dropped off in a Middlefield parking lot and instructed to purchase their meal using no additional funds. The class responded with creativity, split into groups, pooled monies and all ate rather well. Following lunch, the group visited Briar Hill/Briar Cliff, an assisted living and health care center in Middlefield. The group caroled and played Bingo with the residents. The class then worked at WomenSafe, a Chardon-based safe-haven for those striving to escape abusive situations. Annette Phillips and Renee Petro, Leadership Geauga graduates, gave a tour of the GreenHouse

and shared success stories of women and children who have received support. During this visit, the class wrapped gifts for families in the Adopt-a-Family program. While en route to several of these locations, class member Debbie Tarr, an employment counselor with Vocational Guidance Services spoke about agencies that send clients to VGS and why, explaining the employment barriers faced by people with physical or mental challenges. A special thank you goes to St. Mary’s Church in Chardon for allowing a caravan of 30-plus cars to fill the parking lot and for providing the site of the 2012 Leadership Geauga Holiday Gathering. The day was an eye-opener for the Leadership Geauga Class of 2013, and the experience will inspire this class to find opportunity and conviction and to help those who are hurting in Geauga County. The season has just about been closed down since the weather changed from rain and cold to snow and cold. The temperature swings often found in northeast Ohio can bring thaws which allow golfers to still tee it up along the lake front. The courses that we play in our area will remain closed until the spring thaw arrives in late March or early April. To people lucky enough to traverse to the warmer weather during the winter months, be safe and make sure you stretch out before you play. It is something that should be done every time before you play golf, but especially after a layoff over a period of time. A good exercise to take with you before starting your round of golf is to set one foot on the back of the cart while holding onto the cart and bending at the waist as far as you can toward that lifted leg. Do not force the bend and go slow. This stretch will work the muscles from your upper body to your lower body. After several attempts of trying to touch your head down to your leg, switch legs and do the same exercise with the opposite leg set on the cart. This should help to get you through the first holes by allowing you to complete the turn on the ball when taking the back swing. Most of us will be grinding it out in northeast Ohio’s winter months for the duration. A good way to stay in shape for a smooth start during the spring thaw is to go for walks when the weather permits. Strong legs are necessary to maintain good balance. Maintaining good balance is necessary for a solid golf swing. Lifting weights for power allows you to strengthen and add distance to your golf game. Power lifting is done by doing heavier weight and less repetitions. Strengthening the forearms by putting a nylon rope through an aluminum bar with a weight of your capability is one of my favorite exercises. A fun thing to do that does not involve much physical activity is a yoga type exercise. Lie on your back with your knees raised and your feet flat on the floor. Close your eyes and breath deep with the air being inhaled and exhaled traveling down the back of the spine. You should feel the back expanding all the way down to your buttocks as you inhale. Every time the air is exhaled imagine the tension flowing out through your finger tips and toes. After practicing the breathing for about 10 minutes set yourself on your favorite golf course. Feel the warm sunshine on your body as you set the tee into the first tee box. Visualize the shot off the fist tee landing in the middle of the first fairway and play as many golf holes as you can while concentrating on every shot. This will help with visualizing your shots when the season starts as well as improve the amount of strokes you use in a round. People that were forced to quit playing the game because of age or a disabling injury can actually put themselves back into the game by doing this same mental exercise. The more often you focus on the exercise, the more realistically you can make it happen. We will be back on the Green Side before you know it. Robert Kacica is the golf professional at Rolling Green Golf Course, 15900 Mayfield Road, Huntsburg. Call him there at 440-636-5171.

Recycled Art Exhibition Returns Back by popular demand, the discARTed Recycled Art Exhibition will return to Geauga County Jan. 26 through March 31 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. It all kicks off with an all-ages exhibition opening on Jan. 26 from 2 to 4 p.m. at The West Woods Nature Center, 9465 Kinsman Road (Route 87) in Russell. Join participating regional artists this night to view their unique artwork created from discarded/found material and enjoy live music and refreshments. Geauga Park District’s first discARTed exhibit, which ran November 2009 through January 2010 and showcased more than 100 artists and 200 pieces, attracted close to 10,000 visitors and amped up awareness of sustainability and recycling on a regional level. “The discARTed show is a challenge to the community to “think outside the trash can,” said Teresa Runion, special events coordinator. “Utilizing cast-off materials in the creation of decorative and functional artwork. Works created from recycled materials are carriers of memory, containing vestiges of their former function into the new art pieces. The possibilities for raw materials are endless, as is the potential for artwork being created. Visitors are drawn to the mystery of what has been created and are delighted with the unique artwork they will find. There were numerous requests to offer this exhibition again from visitors to the show as well as artists wishing to exercise their talent further.” The West Woods Nature Center is wheelchair/stroller accessible. For information, contact Teresa at 440-2790882 or trunion@geaugaparkdistrict.org.

Want a few other ways to enjoy discARTed? Mark these programs on your calendar. Trash to Treasure: Jewelry from Recycled Materials on Jan. 23 (fee: $12, registration required); discARTed Family Day Feb. 23; and “Scrap” Book-Making Workshop March 20 (fee: $12, registration required). Learn more at http://geaugaparkdistrict. org. Geauga Park District Foundation would like to thank Waste Management for sponsoring this second installation of discARTed, and is excited to promote community outreach and sustainable practices through the arts. Geauga Park District is online at http:// geaugaparkdistrict.org, Facebook, Twitter and YouTube.

The year 2013 will be big for the Geauga County Public Library and the Middlefield branch is starting it off with some useful and fun programs. This first program is both practical and delicious! Visit the Middlefield Library Saturday, Feb. 2, from 2 to 4 p.m. for “Make Homemade Sweeties for your Sweetie!” Alysabeth Abarnathy will demonstrate easy recipes that can be made in your spare time at home. AARP and the United Way are both offering free tax assistance in February, March, and April at the Geauga County Public Library branches. Call the Middlefield Library to schedule an appointment. Whether visiting for programs, technology, or our growing collection, make the Middlefield Library, 16167 E. High St, part of your 2013 routine. Call 440-832-1961 to register for all programs.

{ community youth } Teaching Students About Jobs The Cardinal Local School District and the Geauga Growth Partnership will collaborate on a program to educate Cardinal students about Geauga County job opportunities and workplace expectations. The first activity will be a course in soft skills expected in the work place that is being developed by Cardinal High School teachers Meghan Turon and Kim Miller, who is also Cardinal’s guidance counselor. If approved by the Cardinal Board of Education, the course will be offered to the sophomore class Fall of 2013, expanding to junior and senior classes over the next 2 years. “We are delighted to have the advice of Geauga County companies to bring greater awareness of employment opportunities and requirements to students,” said Cardinal Superintendent Paul Yocum. “Meg and Kim have done a great job pulling together this program, which we look forward to starting next Fall. Whether our graduates enter the workplace directly out of Cardinal or after college, employer needs and expectations should be clear to them,” he said. John W. Epprecht (Great Lakes Cheese), GGP Chairman, said, “If there’s one thing Geauga County businesses agree on, it’s the importance of a qualified workforce. We look forward to working with the Cardinal district and other Geauga County schools to increase student and parent awareness of the education and training that graduates need to succeed.” Epprecht applauded the work of the GGP Education Task Force, led by John Wilhelm, for planning practical steps to collaborate with Cardinal.
