inter has loosened its grip a n d everyone is focused on welcoming spring by getting outside and having fun. If you’re dusting off your fishing gear and considering taking the kids out, be sure to think ahead and plan right so everyone has a good time. First, decide on your location. You want to go somewhere that’s safe and easily accessible. You don’t want a skinned knee or to have anyone complaining that they’re tired before you even start fishing. Sure spots are your best bet with kids, who look for nonstop (l-r) Bryce Hill, age 5 and Lincoln Wilson, action and prefer age 2, are ready for some spring fishing. catching a lot of small fish over hooking one or two bigger ones. Light line will do the job, preferably 6-pound test line or less. Avoid hooks larger than size 10 (hook sizes run backwards, size 12 is smaller than size 10). The harder the bobber is to pull under, the harder it will be to hook a fish. “Slip” bobbers work well for kids. They cut down on the amount of line needed at the end of the rod and are easier to cast. Sinkers help get your line down to the fish. They can also create “zero buoyancy.” Ideally, you want your bobber to just barely Continued On Page 2

e proudly lifted the small bronze plaque off the shelf. “Rookie of the Year 2004” was engraved on it. On it was also written that the award was given to someone “who in their first year has gone beyond the expected level of job performance by showing initiative, outstanding contributions and demonstrating a positive attitude.” Bob Ross, my distant cousin from the Slovak Republic, received this plaque five years after immigrating to the USA. He became an American citizen in 2005. His story has captivated me since our paths first crossed in 1990. Bob is my second cousin once removed. My immediate Czech history dates back to 1888 when my father’s parents Stefan Matyas and Teresa Hros emigrated together as newly-weds from the small town of Brezovica in Czechoslovakia, not far from the Polish border, specifically from the eastern part now known as the Slovak Republic.
