ome of my fondest childhood memories were flying kites with my Dad. As I grew up, this never changed and it continued into the third and fourth generations of the Snyder Family. What memories we have! While working at the Cleveland Kite Festival as a Red Cross Volunteer, I became friends with Nancy Lockwoor of OSEK (Ohio Society for the Elevation of Kites). In the fall of 2000 I told them about Overlook Park in Parkman and asked if they would be interested in holding an event there. They were, as always, interested in flying kites, so I asked the Parkman Chamber of Commerce to sponsor the event and they agreed. We contracted Send It Packin‘ Plus as our vendor, worked on local advertising and rounded up a crew to sell refreshments. When the day of the Come Fly With Us Kite Festival arrived, we were at the park at 7 a.m. to welcome the vendor and OSEK to Parkman’s Overlook Park. There was a nice breeze and sunshine, as people began to arrive. Soon the sky was filled with kites of all shapes, sizes and colors. It was spectacular. People of all ages watched, played, and enjoyed the fellowship. By 12:30 p.m. the Chamber voted to make Come Fly With Us an annual event. In all, about 100 people joined us. Over the years the venue has changed. We now have a DJ, bake sales, and an ice cream truck. Overlook Park is now listed on the OSEK Web site as one of their favorite places to fly. ach year brings new inroads into cancer research and treatments, and there are many survivors who are telling their stories. Cancer survivor Julie Dulka of Huntsburg vividly remembers the day when, at age 39, she discovered a lump in her right breast. Biopsies of the 3-centimeter tumor revealed an aggressive form of cancer, so with the support of her husband Mitch she decided to have the breast removed. She was given no radiation or chemotherapy, but was on medication for 5 years. Every year, in thanksgiving, Julie and her husband attend the Relay for Life, knowing that donations to the American Cancer Society helped make the advances that saved her. Julie also attributes her successful recovery to her positive attitude and the support of her family. Julie insists, “Without the American Cancer Society and Relay for Life, I would not have known about the choices and medical

treatments available when I was faced with breast cancer in 2000.” Join in on Saturday, May 5 for Paint the Town Purple Day. Gather in the Dollar General Store parking lot on Route 87 in Middlefield at 10 a.m. to help put posters in windows, tie purple ribbons around trees, and set canisters on business counters to collect donations. The American Cancer Society’s Relay For Life is a yearly event that gives communities across the globe a chance to celebrate the lives of people who have battled cancer, remember loved ones lost and fight back against the disease. Middlefield will hold its annual Relay for Life on Saturday, May 19, at

Cardinal High School starting at noon and going through the night. The bulk of the money raised by the Relay goes into research and new programs. More and more people are surviving cancer because of new research and treatment discoveries. There are an abundance of awareness programs and classes in which those with a cancer diagnosis and their families can participate. One cancer Continued on page 9
