Riding Lessons And More At Durkee Hill Stables Head north out of Middlefield on Route 608 past the Middlefield Cheese and past Burton Windsor Road where the road rises toward the top of the hill. Behind Morning Glories Statuary Shop lies a locally recognized, flourishing local business, Durkee Hill Stables. Though you might not be familiar with them, Durkee Hill Stables, LLC has been in Middlefield for quite some time and is home to trainer, Lana Volk. She, along with her family, have run the farm and the statuary shop since they relocated from the Chagrin area more than 10 years ago. Having recently undergone extensive renovations to the farm, amenities now include an expansive 20-stall facility with indoor and outdoor arenas, access to trails, a cross country schooling course and more! Lana Volk first rode horses with her mother at age 4 and has been passionate about it ever since! She was a decorated national competitor on the east coast showjumping circuit as a young adult. Since starting the farm more than a decade ago, she has developed her skills as a talented trainer in many facets of the equine industry. Lana has expanded the family-owned farm from a sevenstall former veterinary facility, adding on to become the multifunctional equine facility that it is today. These days Lana keeps quite busy offering her clients a training program with a wide variety of equine related activities. Lana offers instruction for beginner through advanced riders in eventing, jumping, dressage, foxhunting and even trail riding at many of Geauga’s beautiful parks. Lana also teaches a foxhunting course for Lake Erie College (not to be confused with literal hunting, the course offers traditional training for riding on a variety of terrain in concert with trained hounds). Her classes are not limited to specific age groups or to those with a competitive bent. “We have a lot of great clients, from children and competitive riders, to mature riders looking for a leisurely trail ride”,

she explains. Lana’s schedule is flexible, just contact her and ask! Lana clearly loves what she does. The friendly, social atmosphere among everyone there is evident to visitors. “We just had a lot of clients and friends out for a painting party, we've painted all of our jumps and cross country hardware; had pizza and snacks, it was a lot of fun” said Lana. Durkee Hill Stables likes to keep a friendly, inclusive, collaborative culture offering clients group outings with Chagrin  Valley Trails and Riding Club, the Lana Volk with her horse at Durkee Hill Stables. community interest Spring Has Sprung - Don’t Mess it up!

THE SELINICK CO.

By Lynda Nemeth, director Destination Geauga

I

t’s finally here. After many long months of winter, the elusive spring we wait for so diligently is finally here and I. Love it! It’s not just the warmer temperatures, and blooming flowers; although that is a great part. I love that it’s light out at 5:30 in the morning and the birds are happily singing about it. I love that we can leave the house without a checklist– hat, gloves, snow pants, boots, two boots, double check?–and I love seeing some of our favorite iconic warm weather events back on the calendar. When you live in an area that cherishes its warm weather months you make the most of them. I was just asked to do an overview of ‘Summer Fun’ in Geauga, and based on events entered to the Destination Geauga website the fun has already begun. A few iconic ones that always signal the start of warmer days are the Wednesday night Cruise-ins in Burton, the opening of our

weekly Farmers Markets in South Russell on Saturday mornings and Chardon’s Friday night concerts in the gazebo. Of course the Geauga Park District is running their Nights Out in the Parks programs featuring music, movies, and fun. Saturdays in the Country begin in May in Burton, our restaurants open their patios, and the festivals and weekend special events begin in full force. We love it when our office traffic increases and as soon as the warm weather starts it definitely begins to rise. Just this week we welcomed visitors from Pennsylvania, New York, North Carolina, Georgia, and Arizona. Another warm weather sign are the compliments that we hear from visitors on how impressed they are with Middlefield, as they drive into town and are treated to the beautiful hanging baskets and colorful planters brimming with flowers, and the flags billowing in the breeze. Now that the warm weather is upon us, all I ask is, please, no one mess it up by doing anything silly like taking the snowbrush out of your car.

Burton Antiques Market You buy it, we load it!

When was the last time you were at an antiques show where the show employees picked up your purchases from dealers and took them to a loading area where they loaded all of your purchases for free? Probably never - unless you have been to the Burton Antiques Market. This is the only antiques event in the United States that offers this service to all buyers. Whether it is a large country store counter, a painting, or a vase, all of your worries are over about how to get the merchandise to your vehicle. At each of last years’ shows, more than 1,000 items were sold by the dealers and moved to the loading area! Most items were pieces of furniture. Here is how it works: When a customer buys an item from a dealer, the dealer will put a two-part tag on the piece. Half stays with the piece, and half is given to the customer–like a coat check ticket or a valet parking stub. The item is then picked

up, put on one of six wagons working the show and taken to a building where it will be unloaded. When you’re ready to leave, you can drive to the merchandise pickup building where a team of Amish men will match up the tags. They will do all of the loading for you at no charge, and the entire process is very easy! Now in its 54th year, the Burton Antiques Market attracts both dealers and shoppers from all over the country. At the upcoming June 13 show, more than 400 dealers will be present, displaying everything from highend period furniture and exquisite estate jewelry to collectible postcards. There promises to be something for everyone. The show is held twice a year at the Geauga County Fairgrounds, Ohio’s oldest fairground, located about 20 miles east of Cleveland Ohio. Dates for 2015 are Saturday, June 13 and Saturday, Sept. 26. The show is only one day, so plan to spend the entire day and see everything. Wear comfortable walking shoes and dress appropriately for the weather. A quarter of the dealers are located inside buildings, and the other three quarters are outside under tents. There will be an abundance of great food vendors offering everything from kettle korn to steak sandwiches. The show opens at 8 a.m. to more than a thousand Early Buyers who will get the first shot at all the great antiques and old collectibles. Early Buyer’s admission is $25. General Admission starts at 10 a.m. and runs until the show closes at 4:30 p.m. for $8. Don’t miss one of the greatest antique events in America. Remember… you buy it and we load it! For more info, please contact Kay Puchstein at 740-998-5300 or visit our website for more information and a short video of last years’ show – www. burtonantiquesmarket.com.

Eighth Graders Visit Local Businesses On Wednesday, May 20, the eighthgrade class from Berkshire Jr/Sr High School visited area businesses to learn about careers. First Graders Ice Cream Project

Mrs. Girdler's and Mrs. Zembower's first-grade class at Ledgemont Elementary conducted an ice cream experiment using project based learning as their guide. The students worked in groups of four and started with this "Driving Question" How can we create a new flavor of healthy ice cream for kids? The groups had written their recipes earlier and then met to discuss how they would start. The ingredients were laid out for each team to use for their own recipe. Once the students were ready, each group took what they had created and poured in the blender. Everyone had a taste to see if they liked what had been created. After this was finished everyone started writing in their notebooks about what they had learned.
