All guys love wheels.

By Jacquie Foote

Consider the Wheel

Jet planes use them, as do dentistry drills, cooling fans in computers, electric generators and trains. You’ve ridden on them in cars and in them in carousels. Wheels! They are what many anthropologists consider early mankind’s second most significant invention, controlled fire being the first. Wheels date so far back (10,000 years according to some) that tracing their history takes a real detective, or maybe a scientist with the instincts of Sherlock Holmes. They use pictures on the walls of caves and ancient buildings and pots along with a good helping of logic to build the story of the development of the wheel. It is still a mystery who invented the wheel, or even where it was first used. Archaeologists guess that maybe it was around 8,000 B.C. (plus or minus a millennium) somewhere in Asia. The oldest known example of a wheel was found in Mesopotamia. It is believed made by the Sumerians and to date back to 3,500 B.C. Pottery from about 3,000 years ago tells us two things; one, that pottery wheels were used then, and two, that there were war chariots back then (pictures on the pottery show them). Pictures of wagons were found on pottery dating from about the same time. But these pots originated and were found in Eastern Europe. Ha! Another clue! The wheel predates 3,000 B.C., probably quite a bit seeing as how the idea traveled so far. Some say that the earliest wooden wheels likely came from between 6500 and 4500 B.C. One thing we’re pretty sure of is that the potter’s wheel was invented somewhere around 4500 B.C. and wheeled vehicles came hard on the domestication of the horse, between 4500 and 3300 B.C. with spoked wheels being invented about 1,100 years later. As to how wheels were invented, here we use a combination of logic and imagination and hope we have the story straight. It is believed that early men found that if they placed “rollers” (likely smooth logs) under heavy objects, they could move them more easily. Then, they began placing runners under a heavy load and discovered the load was easier to drag. This was the invention of the “sledge”. It is believed that early men soon (several hundred years?) began to combine the roller and the sledge. As the sledge moved forward over the first roller, a second roller was placed under the front end. It took on the load as it moved

off the first roller. There is a model of such a sledge and rollers at the Smithsonian. As the rollers that carry the sledge become grooved with use, those deep grooves actually allow the sledge to move forward a greater distance before the next roller is needed. It is believed that early men noticed this and, eventually, they removed the wood between the grooves of the roller, forming what we would call an axle. Wooden pegs were fastened to the runners on each side. When the wheels turned, the axle turned in the space between the pegs, making the first cart. Over time, wheels and axels were made separately and holes for the axels were drilled though the frame of the cart. The next improvement was the spoked wheel and it happened in many diverse places at nearly the same time, archeologically speaking. The Assyrians and people of the Caucuses used spokedwheeled war chariots starting around 1500 B.C. as did the Egyptians, the people of Northwestern India and the Celtic peoples, the Celts making further improvement by placing an iron rim around the wheel (about 1000 B.C.) to cut down on wear. The next significant improvement is said to be the invention of the tension spoke by G. F. Fisher in 1802. The final great improvement was the invention of the pneumatic rubber tire we use on automobile wheels today. It is interesting that the early civilizations of the Western Hemisphere never made use of the wheel for transportation although some of them made their children toys that had small wheels. It is believed that the reason they didn’t have full sized wheeled vehicles was that they did not have domesticated draft animals (the horse was not introduced to the Americas until the early 1500s) and they also did not have extensive road systems. In fact, the lack of developed roads prevented wide usage of the wheel for transportation in less developed parts of the world well into the 20th century. As for us, wheels for transportation, for technology (from the cog wheel to the gyroscope) and for fun (Ferris Wheel), they help keep our modern life rolling along! Mustang Sally

Sally, my 1967 Mustang, is one of the 38,751 convertibles made that year. It came with a 289 Engine Automatic Transmission and an AM Radio. The sticker price for this built, not manufactured car was around $3,100. My wife Donna and I purchased the car in May 2002 through a Plain Dealer ad. We bought it on the spot even though it obviously needed some repairs. We drove the Mustang around that summer and started purchasing parts. As time went on, I discovered major sheet metal work was needed under the car. Winter and spring of 2002 and 2003 I restored all the rusted sheet metal and body parts and made many of the obvious repairs. We had it repainted in May 2003. In the 11 years we owned the Mustang, literally everything on the car has been replaced in an ongoing project, including a new engine and transmission in 2009. We have met best friends through the cruise nights and car shows and won many trophies and awards. Classic Mustangs are great cars to restore and drive, as parts are readily available, including complete new bodies. One of our friends gave it the nickname Sally from the song Mustang Sally, and it stuck. Another friend gave me the “Built, not Bought” sticker that is in the corner of the windshield. We have owned two other Mustangs, a 1968 1/2 Coupe, which was my wife’s when we were in high school and first married, and a 1966 convertible. The 1967 is our favorite. We love the body style. It looks fast just sitting still. For the past 11 years, Sally has always guaranteed us a fun ride.

Joe Novak’s ‘52 Chevy with a Corvette engine.

By Joe Novak

I Was a Crazy Car Guy

I am serious, I was crazy, at least that’s what my father thought when at age 15 I bought a ‘55 Ford without an engine. I’m sure he believed I couldn’t get into trouble with a car that couldn’t leave the driveway, at least on its own power. I never did get it running and sold it for a small profit. Now you are not going to believe this; I then bought a ‘56 Chevy convertible and you guessed it, no engine, but the body was stellar! I also sold that for a bit more profit and this time I bought a ‘52 Chevy with a Corvette engine…but no transmission or clutch. I bet you’re thinking “this kid is a genius!” I had a lot of friends who raced cars, so finding a 4 speed tranny (transmission) was really not that hard, and everyone had at least some clutch parts laying around. She was a real sleeper; looked like grandma’s car, ran like the devil! I had my car running in a short time and my parents wishing for the good old days when I owned cars that did not run. I was only 16 and my curfew was, “Be home before the street lights come on” with a zero tolerance policy. Many times I raced those lights home and that had the neighbors wishing I still had that ‘55 Ford. It was a time when I thought I was immortal, thought I had the hottest car and thought that nothing was more fun than running through the gears slamming that Hurst shifter and burning rubber. Nothing that is, until I discovered girls. And I thought hot rod cars were expensive! To find out what Joe would do, e-mail questions to editorial@middlefieldpost.com. Joe has 20some years experience in manufacturing and says that as a small business owner, he found that you either learn how to solve a problem yourself or pay to have it done. By Ellie Behman

Up In Smoke

With gas grills and pre-packaged meats, a barbecue can be under way in minutes. Ah, but the memorable extravaganza that my dad prepared more than a half century ago took days to create. It was an art form that does not seem to be present in today’s fast paced culture. The meat was sliced and seasoned to perfection days ahead. The ingredients then had ample time to acquaint themselves with one another, resulting in an interesting blend of flavors. Up at dawn on the day of our picnic, Dad would burn large stacks of kindling until the coals were hot and smoldering. He was a master at his craft and knew the precise moment to begin. He carefully slid the meat onto the skewer as delicately as an artist sweeps his brush over the canvas. The family gathered around him as he patiently turned the barbecue rod over the crackling fire. He was the lead player in this performance and we were the extras. Looking up with a mischievous grin, he would pour his homemade wine over the sizzling entrée. Then, with a wink, he would sample a sip or two along the way. Smoke billowed toward the sky as the cool wine dripped onto the glowing embers. The aroma wafted through the air and teased our nostrils while our mouths watered with hungry anticipation. Dad’s blue eyes mirrored his inner soul as they sparkled with child-like happiness. Pure white hair lay in matted ringlets beneath his favorite baseball cap. Now, so many years later, I realize that it wasn’t the food that made those times so special. It was the man himself that drew us back time and time again, the nucleus that bonded one to the other with a ready smile and loving heart. Now, when we take time to prepare the traditional family recipe, we capture a corner of the past and hold it close, if only for a little while. Although our lead player is gone and another has stepped in, some would say that our memories have gone “up in smoke”. I know in my heart this is not true. As we all stand around the fire pit and smell the tantalizing aromas, I can close my eyes and picture Dad smiling down at us as if to say, “Carry on, you’re doing fine.”

ATV, MoTorcycle, cAr & SMAll Truck repAir Summer of 1967 (l-r) County commissioners, William A. Burns and Wain Parson; State Aviation Div. chief engineer, Gerald E. Chambers; Malcom Boors, former owner of the 42acre site; commissioner James Hunt; Chamber of Commerce president, Glade B. Harrison, all from Middlefield.

Geauga County Airport -- The Beginning By Christina Porter The summer of 1967 was an exciting time for Geauga County; ground was broken for the Geauga County Airport in Middlefield on Aug. 31, 1967. Over 50 people assembled in the one-time hayfield of the 42-acre site. As the participants turned over the first spadeful of earth, Geauga County Commissioner William A. Burns suggested that they collect a handful of the soil for posterity. “This is a tremendous day for Geauga countians,” Burns said. “You can take a sample of this earth home with you for your children and grandchildren. It marks a new day in Geauga’s great history.” The Middlefield Chamber of Commerce purchased the site from local Middlefield realtor, Malcolm Boorn, and a week before this event, the hay was cut for the last time in 30 years at the farmstead. As the groundbreaking was taking place, timber was being cut at the far south end of the strip by the construction crew. Thirteen months later, Governor James Rhodes flew in to assist county commissioners with the ribbon cutting ceremony. The facility was hailed as an asset for aiding Geauga’s industrial growth by providing nearby freight and passenger commuter services. The 65 by 3,500 foot runway was a source of great pride, and the airport dedication was a county wide celebration. Festivities began at noon in the field just south of Middlefield Village. There were displays of aircraft on the ground that included more than 20 Cessna Aircraft models, band concerts by Geauga County school bands, sky diving exhibitions, stunt fliers, and airplane rides for the public. The airplane rides cost interested riders a penny a pound with a minimum charge of one dollar per person. The dream had finally come true, but previous to this happy day, the county had a difficult time qualifying for a state of Ohio $100,00 grant. They had to obtain a suitable site for building the field and wound up having to get deadline extensions on bid speculations and contract awards. The commissioners were facing a tight budget so had no money to buy a site. But in 1967 Middlefield Chamber of Commerce president Glade Harrison spearheaded a campaign to raise $20,000 to purchase the site. Contributions came in from all over

Geauga; from industries, commercial firms, and private individuals who saw the port facility as an aid to future county growth. Sept. 27, 1968 a full paged congratulatory article in The Times Leader newspaper said, “When people with vision and vitality get together in a community of present accomplishment and even more promising potential, the blueprint for progress is clear. It’s full speed ahead, toward a tomorrow of growth and gains in every way. That’s what we have going for us, in this community, where wonderful people through their united efforts have made our town a wonderful place to live and work...a town with a wonderful future in store.” The article was funded by Hans Rothenbuhler from the Middlefield Swiss Cheese Co-op, Home Decorating White Bros. Shopping Center, Welshfield Inn, Lloyds Rexall Drug and Moss Farm Dairy. Other congratulatory ads were placed by Middlefield Bowling and Recreation, The Home Telephone Company, Finch Cleaners and Dyers, Fritinger Lumber, Geauga Industries, Geauga Auto Parts, Chardon Lakes Inn and Gilded Cock Tavern, Bass Lake Community, The Johnson Rubber Company, D & D Plaza Foods, Tropical Fish Paradise, Middlefield Hardware, Ritondaro Funeral Home, H&H Hardware, Schneider’s Dept. Store, Vlchek Plastics Company, Hambden Building Products Inc., Sajar Plastics Inc., Geauga Auto Parts, The Johnson Rubber Co., the Western Reserve Agency, KSU Geauga County Academic Center, and even API Instruments Co. out of Cleveland. Everyone was proud and excited about Middlefield, and it was touted as “a rural setting for modern industry”. In 1968, the estimated Geauga County population was 61,000 people, and in 2004 it was 94,602. According to the Geauga County Website, the population is expected to exceed 104,000 by 2020. Beautiful Geauga County has certainly grown, and through the efforts of its hearty and determined citizens, the area and the airport will continue to grow and offer more and more to its residents and those in the surrounding counties. Thank you to Bob R. Miller Jr. for sharing his archive of news clippings about the airport’s historic opening.

{ wheels } Vacation Sleeping Tips

Staying Limber During Road Trips Road trips are basically the equivalent of sitting at your desk for hours on end without moving an inch. This can create uncomfortable, and even painful, muscle-use imbalances, so it’s important to stretch to keep your joints from creaking like the tin man’s. Here are some problems and solutions to spending a lot of time behind the wheel.
Pinched Pectorals. When your hands are on the wheel, you close your chest up, eventually causing discomfort. Stand in an open doorway. Press your hands on each side of the entryway, so your upper arms are parallel to the floor and your elbows are bent 90 degrees. Now slowly lean forward to open your chest muscles. Hold for 15 seconds and repeat two more times.
Stiff Neck. If you feel cramping in your neck and shoulder, sit in a chair at the next rest stop. With your right arm, grab the right side of the seat to straighten your arm. With your left arm, reach over your head and try to touch the top of your right ear. Now gently pull your head to the left until you feel the stretch in the right side of your neck. Hold for 15 seconds. Switch arms and repeat to stretch the other side.
Creaky Hips. When you stand up and walk after hours of driving, your hips can feel like metal. Step into the half-kneeling position. Kneel on your right knee with your left leg extended at a 90-degree angle. Now gently push your pelvis forward until you feel a stretch in your hips. Hold for 15 seconds. Now squeeze your shoulders back to open up your chest and flex your back muscles. This is a perfect way to open up your body after slouching for hours in a car. Take the little extra time on your road trip to stop and give your body a vacation. It will be worth it when you reach your destination without being stiff or sore.

Road trips throw your body out of whack, and when you can’t control your environment, you’re more likely to have trouble sleeping. A 2010 Israeli sleep study found that insomniacs who adapted a daily routine slept better than those who didn’t, but routines are hard to establish on the road. Use these tactics to ensure that your rest stop is actually restful. Use your nose to create sleep-scented memories. Research shows that lavender aromatherapies improve sleep quality because lavender slows the nervous system and calms nerves. For a few days before you leave, spray a squirt of lavender scent on your pillows and then do the same on the road. You’ll quickly associate that scent as your signal to sleep.

 Tap the familiar
by packing items that will help you keep your routine because a new environment can make it more difficult to sleep. Pack a pillowcase and your own alarm clock to help the rooms feel more familiar. Add a dim nightlight for your hotel bathroom to help maintain similar light levels in each location.

Embrace the sounds of the outdoor traffic or crickets. The extra soundtrack acts as a white noise that takes your mind off more anxious thoughts such as whether you’ll catch your connecting flight—and helps you fall asleep.

 Block the light.
Bright lights outside your window aren’t going to put you to sleep. Light lowers your melatonin, the hormone that controls when you sleep and wake-up. Most hotels have thick curtains to block the light, so use them. And charge your phone in the bathroom so you’ll be less likely to climb out of bed and use it in your wakeful periods, and more likely to fall back to sleep.

The better you’re able to sleep at night, the more ready you will be to enjoy all the fantastic adventures that come your way on your trip.

Don’t Break Down – Maintain Your Vehicle Extend the life of your vehicle while protecting the lives of those you love by keeping your car or truck in good condition. Statistically, your vehicle will run more smoothly and reliably with scheduled maintenance as recommended by your vehicle’s manufacturer, such as oil changes and fluid checks, tire rotation, brake replacement, timing belt replacement and heating and cooling checks. According to a recent article, preventative maintenance is so cost effective that “for the cost of owning a new car for one year, you could own a paid-off car for 5 years”. Driving is dangerous, even if every driver was competent and alert at all times. Protecting yourself and your family is job one. Save lives. Save money. Maintain your vehicle. Jeff’s Auto Repair and Towing Inc., located at 17364 Kinsman Road on the corner of Route 87 and Hayes Road can help you keep your vehicle maintained and your family safe.
