About Paris

hen I became a freshman, I knew I wanted to have a once in a life time opportunity during my high school career. That’s why I decided to go on the school trip to Paris. When it was about three months away, I counted down each day to make it feel closer and closer, looking forward to it every day, being more and more excited. I waited three years to go on the trip and this summer I finally got to go. Let me just say that it was the most amazing experience I’ve ever had in my life. I will forever have these memories and I am eternally grateful to my parents for giving me the opportunity. Also I want to thank Madame Smith for being a part of this opportunity and for being an awesome French teacher. Without Madame, this trip would not have been as great as it was. When we arrived in Paris after an eighthour flight, we visited the nearby parks that were creative and beautiful. Later that day, we visited the Eiffel Tower, which is my favorite monument in Paris. We got to look at the whole city from an awesome viewpoint. The following days, we visited a number of attractions. The Palace of Versailles is another favorite. The Louvre had amazing art including the very famous “Mona Lisa” and “Venus de Milo.” The catacombs were dark and mysterious and

Cardinal Students enjoy their Paris experience, 2015. (MP Photo/CSD) Luxembourg Park was perfect. At Giverny we saw Monet’s home which was also beautiful. We took a boat ride down the canal and saw a lot more of the city. We walked along the Champs Élysées with a great view of the L’acre de Triomphe. Notre Dame and Saint Chapelle were gorgeous as well. We also visited the cemetery Pére La Chaise seeing the graves of Edith Piaf and Jim Morrison. On Saturday, we visited the Musée D’orsay which has a lot of great art as well. After that, it was a free day from the tour company to do our own thing. Also on Saturday, we were able to experience the movie, “Jurassic World” in French. At the end of the day, we visited Sacre Cœur. On our last day of Paris we visited three castles: Amboise, Chenonceau, and Chambord. The castles were absolutely

beautiful. During our trip, we had to learn the metro system, and now if I ever go back I will for sure know how to get around. Every day we ate lunch of our choosing. I think I had a baguette about every day; it’s so yummy! The dinners we ate were also delicious. My favorite was escargot, which are snails. It may not sound appetizing, but believe it or not, they’re to die for. The weather was awesome, which made the trip even more satisfying. We did so much for such little time. I’m sure I’m missing the little details but that’s why everyone should experience it for themselves. I will admit that I won’t miss all the walking and the exhaustion that comes with visiting France, but in the end it was all worth it. Paris is the most beautiful city I’ve ever seen. And I suggest that if you ever have the opportunity to go, take it, you will never

feel compelled to include an element of patriotism in every article. We recently celebrated the Fourth of July marking the independence of our great country. I am still amazed at the wisdom of those creating and signing our Declaration of Independence and as history tells us the risk and intestinal fortitude those involved possessed. As we continue to enjoy and live in a free country that was created more than 200 years ago we must not assume it will self-sustain. We must be personally involved in preserving and promoting this great country and the freedom we enjoy. I encourage you to stay educated and fulfill your obligation to the whole to ensure we and future generations will enjoy this freedom into the future. On June 20 we celebrated our fourth annual Summer Fest. The weather cooperated and it was a beautiful day. I was thrilled with the number of residents who attended and it was great to see entire families enjoying themselves. The variety of events made it enjoyable for people of all ages. Thanks to the efforts of M.A.C committee, they created an event that everyone could afford as all events were

free and were unique from the zip line to the mechanical bull. I personally had a great time and encourage you if you did not attend this year to place it on your calendar for next year. It will be held the Saturday before Father’s Day going forward. I want to give an additional thanks to the Pat Preston who donated a brand new Camaro convertible to transport our Grand Marshal, CCM rental for allowing use of their property for the outstanding fireworks display and The Harrington family for providing the area for the events. See you there next year. On the business side, Chem Tech is near completion of their new facility and already discussing Phase II. David Ford is constructing a new facility in his industrial park which will also create additional employment. Briar Hill has submitted plans for a large addition to their beautiful facility providing additional employment. The Village finances are the best they have been since 2008 and if we continue to work hard this trend will continue. I appreciate all who invest to improve our community. Middlefield Village is so fortunate to be home to multiple large employers and it is our responsibility to partner with existing and new to ensure this is maintained and improved. Continued from page 1 why he helps newcomers, Tim Connor explains, “It’s fun. I enjoy helping people get into this field, because it’s a great place to be, whether you’re in it for a career or for fun. Andrew and Katie are the first two to come this far. There are a lot of kids who spend time with us, but there are a few that go on to get their pilot ratings or work in the field.” Connor is visibly proud of recruits Andrew Whiting and Katie Goss, who plan to become a commercial pilot and aerospace engineer, respectively. Whiting, who now works for Meritech, is working on becoming their corporate pilot, while working in their engineering department and being sent to school for engineering technologies. “I started working for Jack Venaleck when I was

13, he explained. Andrew worked at the Middlefield Airport, where Venaleck had a collection of airplanes. When Whiting graduated, Venaleck scooped him up, hiring him on at the Painesville headquarters. “Without the airport and the EAA I wouldn’t be where I am today,” Whiting said, “They took me in and taught me what they knew, and it grew bigger than I ever would have expected. I have earned all my flight ratings.” Flight endorsements function much like your driver’s license, where classes of aircraft can be piloted once requirements are met for earning licenses. Katie Gross got her start at the Middlefield Airport when her mother was writing an article on the airport, and let her tag along. Katie, then 16, was impressed by the planes and fascinated by watching them being worked on. Her mother Laurie was able to set up a visit, and Katie began visiting and went from lending a hand turning bolts to flight and ground school. Much of the instruction was free of charge, with instructors from the EAA volunteering their time. Dave Tiber served as flight instructor, and Jim McDermott lent his plane. “They said ‘As long as I do the maintenance on the plane, learn it, and have fun they were happy to help,’” she recounted. Gross helped Dave Rigotti build his Rans Coyote plane after school at age 18, an experience she believes helped get her accepted to a program with Moog aerospace systems in Buffalo, New York. She was hired into the commercial aircraft group as part of a work study program. Her current projects include Embraer Jet actuator testing and an autopilot system for the Robinson 44 helicopter. She is also enrolled at Georgia Tech and in her second year, majoring in aerospace engineering. Her program alternates between work study and college semesters, after which she hopes to work for Moog full time. “I like them, they’re a great company” she said excitedly. She may even be able to take a semester abroad in a Madrid, Spain aerospace program, a welcome international experience. Katie returns to the airport to work on adding to her flight ratings, and is the night pilot for the Georgia Tech flight club, taxiing others for fun. She also helps put on a light maintenance class, where she teaches others to perform minor maintenance. Her time at the Middlefield airport prepared her well. “None of the other guys know how to take off the cowling,” she laughed. We wish Andrew and Katie the best of luck, and thank the EAA and Tim for his help taking in those interested “under his wing”!

Straight-From The-Heart Dr. Scott Hunt, Cardinal superintendent, showing the new Career and College readiness facility currently under renovation at Cardinal High School.

Cardinal School Renovation

Cardinal schools are in the midst of improvements and renovations, including updated hallways and a conversion of the library and adjoining offices to install a Career and College readiness facility. The main lobby renovations, for whom Dr. Scott Hunt, Cardinal superintendent, credits Mr. Hunter and Mr. Kelly, include brightening and updating. The old wood lined and tile hallways, a throwback to the 1970s, have been drywalled, painted, fitted with new ceilings and re-lighted. Working closely with Ten10 design, they are working to put up fresh logos and streamline the facility to give it a modern feel. In the main hallway, the drop ceiling was pulled down, and Hunt commented, “We found paper airplanes in there from 1970s. Can you believe that?” The new distance-learning classroom, which occupies the old library space, will contain digitally controlled big screen monitors, cameras, microphones, speakers and more to give students and teachers access to other schools, sharing resources and knowledge in the classroom. The secondary rooms, formerly offices, have also been renovated with tables, chairs, and large dry erase boards for a second learning space. The improvements have been made possible by the College Ready Ohio Grant. Of the improvements, Hunt commented, “Why shouldn’t we do this for our kids?” This fall, Cardinal students will benefit greatly in this newly-renovated facility all completed at very low cost to the district.
