Middlefield Summer Fest ~ July 27

July 27 promises to be a full day of pure fun with over 50 local businesses, organizations and individuals taking part. It all begins at 8 a.m. with registration for the 5K race at the Grove Street Pavillion. At 11 a.m., music by The Pop Tarts will begin and food vendors and bounce houses will open in the parking lots of Great Lakes Outdoor Supply and the Middlefield Fire Department on Route 608 just north of Route 87.

The parade will start at 1 p.m., with Roy Rogers Jr. serving as Grand Marshal!

The Circus is Coming The Kelly Miller Circus will be in Middlefield Wednesday, July 24 and Thursday, July 25 with two shows each day. The shows are 4:30 and 7:30 pm.

Tickets are $10 for adults, $6 for children 2 to 12 years old, and under 2 years old are free. Buy your tickets in advance and save. If you wait to purchase your tickets at the box office, the ticket cost is $15 for adults and $7 for children. Everyone is invited to come out and watch the animals being unloaded and fed and the elephant raising the big top. Activities

will begin Wednesday at 7:30 am, and the tent will be raised at 9 a.m. Behind the scene tours will be available after the set up, free to school groups, individuals, and anyone attending. Ticket outlets throughout Middlefield are: Cortland Banks, Huntington Bank in Middlefield and in Burton, Middlefield Bank - both the west branch and main office, Coffee Corners in Middlefield, The Fig Tree, Merryfield Electric, Save-A-Lot, and Hilltop Variety.

West Farmington Old Fashioned Days Come and enjoy an old-fashioned summer festival in downtown West Farmington July 25 through 28. Opening ceremonies with Girl Scout Troop 178 at the Veteran’s Monument will kick off the festivities at 5 p.m. on July 25 followed by food, contests and entertainment. On July 26, beginning at 5 p.m. there will be more contests, including a baby photo, watermelon-eating, cookie and kiddie tractor pull competition. Have a pork sandwich or indulge in the Haystack Dinner.

Performances begin at 6 p.m. and three mystery judges will determine who moves on to the finals, which will take place July 27 at 2 p.m. at Summer Fest, when the audience will vote on who will take the $150 first place prize , the $100 second place award and the $50 third place purse.

Continued from Page 1 All afternoon there will be fun family activities like balloon animals and the Mark’s Magic Show and Rocket Car rides start at 3 p.m., the BMX Show by Dialed Action Sports Team at 4 p.m. Then classic rock music band, Alter Ego takes the stage starting at 5 p.m. At 7:30, enjoy the musical styling of the band, The Round, which features Cardinal High School teacher Candi Peters. Stick around for the fireworks that begin at 9:45 p.m.

The parade is at 6 p.m. followed by Bingo at the fire station, music by the Fort Huntsburg Band and a silent auction. Festivities end at 11 p.m.

Sunday, the festival breakfast is at 8 a.m., followed by church services. The small engine tractor pull begins at 1 p.m., and then there will be Christian music and a watermelon-eating contest. The celebration will last until 6 p.m. There will be lots of food, games and good old-fashioned thrills for both young and old, so grab the whole family and head to West Farmington for 4 full days of fun.

Car Show Offers Amazing Prizes The fourth annual Middlefield Summer Fest Car Show will be held, rain or shine, on Sunday, Aug. 4 at Spidalieri’s Great Lakes Outdoors, 14855 N. State Ave. in Middlefield (44062). Owners of all makes, models and years can register their vehicles at 10 a.m. Show time is 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Forty-five awards and trophies will be presented to winners at 2:30 p.m. Plan to get there early; dash plaques and goodies bags will be given to the first 100 arrivals. There will be a large Chinese auction and 50-50 door prizes. The grand prize winner will spend one game with 11 friends in a Cleveland Indians loge, including food and parking for three cars, a value of $2,000. Second prize is an authenticated 11 x 14 signed photo of Mickey Mantle and Hank Aaron. Third prize will be a premium ash baseball bat. Tickets are $5 each, six for $25 and 15 for $50. Food will be available for purchase, supplied by Chef Greg McClain and the Cardinal Huskies Touchdown Club. All proceeds benefit Middlefield’s Shop With a Cop. The Open Kitchen Restaurant was located in downtown Middlefield at the site where Mural Park is now. The building was constructed by Bert Caldwell, who had purchased the small gas station that was located directly on the corner. He and his wife operated a confectionery and gas station for a number of years. The business was very successful and later he decided to construct a building to cover his entire lot from the corner to Middlefield Tavern. He built it almost entirely by himself and worked on it for over a year with very little help. This new building became the home of the Open Kitchen Restaurant.

The Open Kitchen Restaurant was originally located across the street and was owned

by Grover McGurer and Liz Smallwood. When the new restaurant opened, they had installed the latest restaurant and soda fountain equipment, making the Open Kitchen Restaurant into a high class restaurant that helped bring more business to the downtown merchants. Many of the Village’s young women worked in the restaurant. As you can see in the photo, it was a very modern looking restaurant and certainly will bring back fond memories to all who dined there.

and his team have begun the first phase of a security plan to be completed in January of the upcoming school year. Listed are the Phase 1 action steps: Bring all buildings up to NIMS compliance (Universal numbering system) as to labeling of entrances/exits and classrooms/windows.

Complete interior and exterior door lock updates so all district locks are on the Falcon lock system.

Install hallway surveillance cameras with digital recording capabilities and office monitoring in Cardinal High School and Cardinal Middle School.

Replace west metal exterior doors at Cardinal Intermediate School.

Complete the new Infinite Campus alert system.

In addition, this summer we have teachers involved in continuing their learning. Many are enrolled in courses and are pursuing additional licensure or a master’s degree, some are spending time evaluating resources and materials for their classrooms and others are pursuing leadership opportunities inhouse to support our quality programming for all students.

The summer months are time for students and teachers to take a break from the daily grind of school for the purpose of rest and relaxation.

I wish that were actually the case as we all need some R & R from time to time. The truth of the matter is that students are involved in a variety of learning experiences over the summer such as camps, sports teams, clubs, and yes many are actually reading books! Although the students aren’t at “school” they continue to learn and grow during June, July, and August. By the same token, teachers and staff members in the district are currently working now in preparation for the opening of school in August.

I had the opportunity to take a tour of all of the facilities in the district during the last week in June. During that tour, I counted a variety of people working hard to make sure that the buildings and grounds are neat and clean, that walls are painted, the grass is cut and the trees are trimmed, and the facilities are shining for opening day of school. Not only are we working hard to maintain our properties we are also making certain that we are able to strengthen safety and security in the buildings. Our maintenance supervisor

Summer daze!

Lots of hazards come with summer.

Remember w h e n swimming, do not leave yo u n g s t e r s unattended.

Even when at the water park in Middlefield, to prevent abductions and serious injury, always keep young children in constant view and report anything suspicious to the authorities. Older kids should swim with friends so if trouble occurs someone is either there to help or get help. Remember Lake Erie, rivers and streams can have dangerous currents that can pull even the most experienced of swimmers down.

Mowing and weed eating present their share of hazards; be mindful of small children and pets when mowing, and remember, when letting children ride on riding mowers, blades should be disengaged to prevent serious injury.

Always use eye protection when weed eating. Corneal abrasions can be quite painful and seriously effect vision.

Sometimes permanent damage can be done to the eyes. Of course brush piles and campfires can be problems. Do not use gasoline to start brush and campfires since the potential for serious injury is too great. I have seen gasoline flash back and ignite the container in people’s hands causing violent explosions and serious injury.

Finally, wear highly visible clothes when walking on roads after dusk. Pedestrian accidents are far too prevalent these days, resulting in more and more fatalities.

Flashlights are good but not as good as fluorescent armbands and vests that offer visibility front and back. Obey all traffic laws whether in an automobile, a horse-drawn vehicle, a tractor, bicycle, skateboard, scooter or roller blades. Carelessness causes nearly all accidents. Have a great safe summer. Watch out for everyone. We do not want to come to your serious accident that could have been prevented.

I j u s t r e t u r n e d from a week’s vacation with my entire family (granddaughters included) and now need to take a vacation to recover from a vacation. It was very enjoyable and as we traveled over the 4th of July, we saw many creative displays of patriotism in many different areas. I love summer and I love this country.

It is hard for me to believe it is mid July. The Village continues to stay busy with events. We hosted our second successful shred day where the M.A.C (MIddlefield Activities Committee) committee assisted in shredding 7.75 tons of paper. This is a lot of paper and equates to saving 131.75 trees, 23.25 cubic yards of landfill, 465 pounds of air pollutants and 155 gallons of water. In addition, it provided a secure and efficient method for residents and businesses to eliminate unwanted documents.

Cold Blue Steele performed at our Concert in the Park. I was skeptical about this type of event but supported the M.A.C and to my surprise it was well attended and a great evening. The gazebo at the splash park was the perfect venue. We played corn hole listened to music from my era, which is the best, and had an opportunity to visit with neighbors and friends we don’t often see. A second event is planned for Friday Aug. 9; all are invited to a free, enjoyable evening.

The Cops n’ Kids Fishing Fun Day took place on June 30. I was unable to be there

but I know it was well attended and ran smoothly. This is an annual event and other areas are holding them as well, as it is a great way for children to compete, interact with officers and vice versa. “Nice job” to our Recreation Department and police officers for making this event a success.

The sixth of July was our first Middlefield Village Farmers Market. It will be held weekly in Mineral Lake Park until the end of September. It was fantastic. Quality people came to buy quality products. Our vendors strive to sell locally-produced and locally-made goods. Items available from many of the vendors will change as fruits and vegetables come in to season. You will not find a more enjoyable venue to do your weekly shopping. You can enjoy good weather, visit with neighbors, enjoy a cup of coffee or lemonade and purchase highquality items which you know are being produced and made right here in our area.

I encourage each of you to visit the Market as different special events are planned for each week.

Middlefield Summer Fest is only a few weeks away. (July 27) This year the event is a joint effort with the M.A.C and Middlefield Chamber of Commerce. Events are planned for the entire day including lots of food, a grand parade and all-day entertainment.

We’ve had tremendous response for parade participation and the Grand Marshal this year is Roy “Dusty” Rogers Jr. I am looking forward to a fun-filled day concluding with fireworks in the downtown area.

All the events take time and energy from individuals that volunteer their time. I cannot adequately express my appreciation for their efforts in helping make Middlefield Village a better place to live.

Amish Buggy Classic 5K Run This year the Amish Buggy Classic will take place on July 27 at Mineral Lake Park, Grove Street. Preregister by July 22 for $15 or wait until race day and pay $20. Make checks payable to the Village of Middlefield.

Early packet pick up and registration will take place on Friday, July 26 from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Middlefield Municipal Center (Day of race fee will be charged) Race day registration is 7 to 7:45 a.m. at Mineral Lake Park in the Grove St. Pavilion. Race time: 8 a.m. Timing System: 5K Pull tags. The course is new this year and begins on Lake Street, turns right on Edgewood (loops back at cul de sac), right on Newcomb, left on Georgia, left on 608, left on Grove Street to finish.

Diesel Truck Versus Gas

By Joe Novak I love my 95 Dodge Ram diesel pickup truck. I bought it new for the company when delivering parts all over town was more economical in a diesel; however that may not be the case today. When I sold the business, I paid the company blue book for the truck and I now use it on the farm.

Currently, diesel fuel is approximately 50 to 75 cents a gallon more expensive than gas and the diesel option on a new truck can run $5,000 to $8,000. This makes it very difficult to justify a payback when the new gas engines are averaging 20 miles to the gallon on the highway and have the capacity to pull 12,000 pound trailers, just not at 20 MPG. If you own a business and you are towing a trailer with a Skid Steer or mini excavator loaded on it daily, then a diesel pickup makes sense since the diesel engine produces more torque, is needed to pull the weight on a daily basis and a tax write off helps the cause.

justify the added expense of a diesel to occasionally pull a small or medium size trailer and here are the numbers to prove it. Assuming the diesel truck was only $7,000 more than the gas version and your interest rate is 4 percent with a 5-year loan; you are paying $1,400 and dollars more in interest over the life of the loan. Diesel at your favorite fuel stop is 60 cents more per gallon than gas and you drive 35,000 miles per year costing you $1,050 more than the same amount of gas. Add this up: $7,000 plus $1,050 over 5 years equals $5,250 plus interest of $1,400. The grand total to own a diesel truck versus a gas truck is $13,650, and that, my friend, is a lot of Budweiser.

I just this minute found out that Dodge is coming out with a RAM 1500 Ecoboost diesel option for $2,850 with 26 MPG highway. This just may shoot holes in my theory. I will get back to you on this at a later date after the truck hits the market in 2014.

By Ellie Behman Grumble, grumble, grumble - - it seems that’s what I do best, but maybe there are some readers out there who can relate to some of the everyday irritations we may run into and possibly sympathize.

Ever walk into a library to rent videos, only to find that they are stacked upright and you have to practically lay your head on your shoulder just to read the titles? I can always tell when someone has just rented a few as I see them twisting and turning their necks just to get the kinks out.

What about going to the dentist? There you are, your cheeks are filled with cotton, a little water line hanging in your mouth, your lips are numb from the shot and the dentist decides to carry on a conversation with you. Hello! I might add that it’s not very attractive or appealing to be engaged in a muddled discussion with the opposite sex while drooling.

Life is full of questions and puzzling situations that sometimes have no answers.

As children, we asked our parents various things and they somehow came up with satisfactory responses. However, now that I am smack dab in the midst of being the elder citizen, I still find that there are many curious and unanswered situations around us. Here’s some more.

Some stores have installed selfscanning registers that should make checking out quicker. I am living proof that it doesn’t make things quicker for everyone.

Take for instance the day I bought four apples. The screen showed Jonathan, McIntosh, Delicious, Granny Smith, but where on earth was the picture of the ones I wanted? All of a sudden I couldn’t even remember their name. I spent more time

scanning for those elusive apples than I would have if I had driven to an orchard, climbed a tree and picked them myself.

Let’s not even dawdle over the zucchini I bought. I’ll just say I could have grown one while standing there going over the many varieties that appeared on the screen. I began to feel as if I were a passenger on the Starship Galactica, listening to a robotic voice commanding orders; “Please place the apples on the conveyer. Please put the item in the bag. Please select your method of payment,” and so on. Well, at least she said please. Hmmm, if the cashier is being replaced, can the customer be far behind?

I wonder.

I just think I am challenged in some way when it comes to modern technology.

Take cameras for instance. It still amazes me that you can point a small box at someone and come up with a bright, clear picture. Speaking of pictures, what about television? Live pictures of people actually being transmitted into your living room.

Who knew?

Wouldn’t it be funny if the store scanners and our televisions got together?

We could actually see the woman with all the orders at the register and perhaps strike up a conversation with her like in the old days when a real person stood behind the counter. As far as our television viewing is concerned, I would personally find it very interesting if one of the actors looked right into the camera and said “Please take your dish to the kitchen. Please let the dog out,” or “Please turn out the lights before you go to bed.” Wow, we wouldn’t have to think for ourselves ever again. Maybe I’m getting a bit off track now.

Here we are in the age of the computer and I am still trying to figure out how to step off an escalator without falling down, getting my sleeve caught underneath and ironing myself to death. What about getting on a bus? I don’t travel on one too often, which is probably why I couldn’t get the pass in the little slot correctly. Trying to hang onto the pole with one hand and get the pass in the slot with the other is as tricky as being a high wire walker with an umbrella. There just has to be a better way.

We have put a man on the moon, yet nobody can tell me why they still manufacture paper plates that collapse under the weight of a pea. Computers rule the world now, but what happens if all our power is taken away? Is there a back up plan?

My last comment involves cloning.

By Kelli Briggs Breeders and Feeders 4-H Club held their most recent meeting June 22 at the Troy Community House. Before the business meeting the poultry members practiced for skill-a-thon and went over the schedule for checking animals in at the fair.

Swine members did a crossword puzzle on pig parts and discussed handling pigs in summer heat. Rabbit members practiced for Skill-a-thon.

The business meeting was called to order by president, Kelsey Z. A report on heat stress and sun safety for yourself and your animal was done by health officer, Danielle D. During new business, many important dates were given: Safety Posters are due to the Extension Office by Aug. 16, first year member meeting for important fair information will be held July 31 at 7:30 p.m. at the School Building on the fairgrounds, Aug.12 is 4-H night at the Captains game, July 13 is Skill-a-thon from 9 to 11 a.m. and project judging will be held that afternoon, July 27 will be our summer picnic meeting -bring your fair book entries to that meeting as they are due August 7. Hoof trimming was discussed -- get in touch with Walker’s if you need to sign up. We also discussed the fair booth decorations for the Junior Fair building. Kelli B. brought up our yearly canoeing trip. The next meeting will be held July 27. There will be a Skill-a-thon practice held July 10.

During the business meeting the Cloverbuds worked on their collages, made pins of themselves with their animal, and played the 7-Up game. After the business meeting the beef members met, reviewed their project books and practiced for Skilla-thon.

Charlie Linn, age 67 of Andover, Ohio died June 19, 2013 due to injuries from a motorcycle accident. He was born May 4, 1946 in East Cleveland, son of Gerald and Agnes (Breitenbach) Linn. He served in the U.S. Air Force 1966 to 1970. He was a truck driver in Iraq for 8 years. He married Tanyavadee “Lyn” Thabthanee in 2006. They were married for 8 years. Charlie was a very social person and enjoyed traveling on his motorcycle.

He will be missed dearly by his friends and family; his wife Lyn; two children, Norman Francis Linn and Tanyaboon Thabthanee of Thailand; brothers and sisters, Joe Linn of Euclid, Tom Linn of Orwell, Mary (Ron) Hirko) of S.D., Bob (Chris) Linn of Parkman, Judy Linn of Willoughby, Julia Webb of N.H., David (Debbie) Linn of Chardon, Paul of Calif., John (Julie) Linn of Mich., and Jack (Audrey) Linn of Vt.; a nephew Kim Vichapong and niece Lalita Vichapong, both of Thailand and numerous other nieces and nephews. Frank Malensek, age 87 of Mentor, formerly of Burton, died peacefully in his sleep June 18, 2013 at Altercare of Mentor. He was born Oct. 8, 1925 in Claridon, son of Louis and Frances (Otonicar) Malensek. He was a graduate of Burton High School in 1944 and served in the U.S. Navy 1945 to 1946. He married Patricia Johnson June 16, 1946. They were married 64 years before she died Jan. 27, 2011.

They lived in Burton till 1978; moved to Tennessee until 2008 and then lived in Mentor since 2008. Frank was a barber in Burton for over 25 years. He was a member of the Burton Volunteer Fire Dept. and the fire chief for several years; also a member of American Legion Post #459 in Burton. He was involved with the construction of the Legion Building. His hobbies included woodworking, stained glass, fishing in Canada, and hunting rattlesnake and deer.

Words of Encouragement and Hope

By Mike Continenza Hello, my name is Mike Continenza. I am the pastor of Abundant Life Church of God in Middlefield. Last year I was blessed to travel on two mission trips to Honduras. Honduras is the second poorest country in Central America. The people deal with malnutrition, poor housing and disease every day. I was so blessed and encouraged by the people there. Over 4,000 people were fed through this ministry and 1,300 people made a Confession of Faith and accepted Jesus Christ as their personal Lord and Savior. Many of these people walked miles to hear the Word of God. People were healed from all kinds of diseases and blind eyes were opened. Hope and faith was restored to many people as well. Sometimes in our busy lives, we lose our hope and faith, but Jesus sits at God’s right hand making intercession for us, so all things are possible with God to those who believe.

Even with all the obstacles, the Honduras people faced everyday, they were always so happy and thankful, and they praised God for everything. We tend to complain and whine about many things here, not realizing how fortunate we really are.

The Hondurans were so hungry to hear the Word of God that some would walk many miles to attend the two to three hour-long services. Not one person would leave before the services were over.

We are so busy in our everyday lives that we forget to be thankful, spend time in prayer, read our Bible and worship our Lord and Savior. God longs for us to spend time with Him. His love for us is unconditional.

My words of encouragement would be for everyone to stop and smell the roses, spend time with our Heavenly Father and be thankful for everything. He is waiting for you.

{ health } Patient’s Best Interest vs. Preference

By Dr. Dave Fakadej At a continuing education seminar the professor presented a series of facts.

First: before 1970 the doctor’s word was absolute. The doctor had the education and experience to maintain authority to diagnosis and treat. Insurance took the doctor’s word without question and doctors received great pay for their authority.

Second: after 1970 imaging and testing were absolute. Insurance companies armed with the results from advanced imaging and testing found approximately 80 percent of diagnoses and treatments were erroneous.

As a result insurance companies changed tactics. Insurance paid handsomely for accurate imaging and testing with no patient co-pay or deductible, patients paid a co-pay and/or deductible for doctor services, and doctors received less from insurance.

Third: after 2006 algorithms were absolute. Insurance companies realized that 80 percent of imaging and testing ordered by doctors produced unremarkable results.

Doctors and hospitals receive benefits through advanced imaging and testing – not the least of which was the benefit of improved diagnosis and treatment. But because 80 percent of the imaging and tests found no problem, insurance companies realized they were paying something for nothing. Hence insurance demanded ‘precertification’ – necessary processes before allowing a patient to receive imaging and testing, to reduce their expenses paid for ‘nothing’.

Fourth: today evidence is absolute.

Doctors and insurance companies use evidence based on research and historical experience to battle for a patient’s best interest. This is good but for one issue: the patient’s best interest versus the patient’s preference.

Published: Dec. 7, 2012, three authors from Dartmouth Center for Health Care Delivery Science authored an analysis in the British Medical Journal, titled “Stop the silent misdiagnosis: patients’ preferences matter.”

Health care management (by doctors and insurance) is complex for good reasons.

However, accuracy in health care delivery is no longer sufficient. Every form of treatment has a unique profile of risks and benefits.

Doctors and insurance cannot recommend the right treatment without understanding or ‘diagnosing’ patient preference.

Patient preference is part of the new national health care plan and is often referred to as the ‘death panels’. The idea is to inform the patients on all treatment options, let the patient debate costs, benefits, side effects, and what the patient will tolerate and accept based on beliefs.

For example, some people reject certain medical treatment based on religious grounds, financial grounds, morbid side effects, or even personal fortitude.

Rendering treatment with consideration for patient preference actually costs less than treating in the patient’s best interest.

According to the analysis, considering a patient’s preference will address a flaw in health care systems around the world, including the U.K.’s managed market and the U.S.’s open market. Evidence shows patients who engage the process of health care spend less on treatment and respond better. The implication is that health care systems around the world can offer patients what they want and cut costs by considering or ‘diagnosing’ patient preference.

Patients must participate in and understand the process of their illness and recovery. Many patients will resist because it means they must think and make decisions. Many doctors will resist because it introduces a new level of diagnosis by evaluating and giving authority over to the patient. Many insurance companies will resist because corporate policies and insurance benefits will need to incorporate patient preference into stock valuation.

We want to believe that health protocols serve our best interest. However, our best interest interferes with our preference for living life on the edge (fast food, inebriation, and rock & roll).

Ultimately, your preference determines successful diagnosis and treatment, not doctors nor insurance nor government policy. Your health depends on whether you elect to live life based on your best interest or based on your preference for living life.

Troy Homecoming is a free community festival held at the Troy Community Center, 13950 Main Market Road in Burton ( 44021) August 9 to 11. A team of community-oriented folks have joined forces to rekindle a century old tradition. 2013 will be Troy Homecoming’s third year of revival, bringing back nostalgic games, living history through Civil War encampment, live entertainment and other wholesome activities. Middlefield Chamber Trunk Sale On Saturday, Aug. 3 the Chamber will once again sponsor the annual Trunk Sale to be held in the parking lot of Harrington Square from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. To reserve a vendor space, call the Middlefield Chamber 440-632-5705.
