When Lisa and Bill Brode had a devastating barn fire March 19, their neighbors jumped in immediately to offer them help. There is no official cause for the fire where three horses, two cows and two goats were lost. It was about 6:15 a.m. that Wednesday morning, when Lisa was up, getting ready for work and an Amish boy on his way to work came to back door and told her the barn was on fire. He helped Bill loosen the back barn door and open all the gates of the stalls. The Mesopotamia Fire Department arrived first, then Middlefield. Nine departments were involved in fighting the blaze. Three of the couple’s horses made it out.
