Sarah Swanker
The Fair Through a Mother’s Eyes By Sandi Swanker Someone once told me that riding is a family sport. Back then, I had no idea what that meant. Our daughter started riding 15 years ago at age 12, which, in the world of riding, was actually late. The good news was all her trainers voiced that she “was a natural in the saddle”. What the heck did that mean? While Sarah was learning about the horse, preparing it to ride, riding it and grooming it, I was trying to learn what tack was: bridles and bits, girths and reins, English and Western…. yikes. As we started to go to horse shows there was even more to learn. Not only did I need to know about horse tack and show attire, I had to “interpret” the show bill! What the heck was equitation, or discipline rail, or showmanship; what about walk, trot vs. novice vs. open. I quickly realized that my role as a horse-show mom needed a lot of work. Luckily, I was with a number of other mothers who had about the same base line knowledge of equestrian sports. We were resourceful and shared what we learned and soon were able to share our knowledge with the next class of new show moms. Our first time at The Great Geauga

County Fair was, of course, memorable. We were going to stall with the youth group that my daughter was with, The Trailblazers. The first task was to come up with a theme to decorate the stalls. The work began with convincing my husband to make many black silhouette horses out of wood. Once they were made each rider decorated them with glitter glue including the name of their horse. These were nailed to each stall. With the addition of lights, the stalls were ready for each and every horse. The horses arrived on Wednesday before the Fair actually began. For the next 120 hours, it was all about horses. The parents set up a tent outside of the stalls where at least one of us was “on duty” all of the time. The parents we met as a result in being a part of the “horse group” have remained friends, 10 years later. Each day when the alarm clock rang at 5:30 a.m., Sarah and I were off to the fairgrounds to feed the horse, muck the stall, get the horse exercised and ready for the first class at 8 a.m. I’ll tell you a secret…I was actually scared of the big horse, so I always volunteered for the non-horse duties ... getting a bucket of water, cleaning boots, getting the clothes. What I remember most is being there. Watching our daughter’s passion for horses grow with every ride, every win and every loss. Throughout the weekend, there were a few tears, some hurt feelings, lots of smiles, confidence building award ribbons and much laughter. All the backstage drama went away when we watched our children smiling and happy, riding proudly on their horses. Each rider hung their ribbons over the stall of their horse. What a great display for fair goers to enjoy. It was so much fun to watch visitors wander through the barns; horses do make everyone smile. At the end of this fair and each one after, we all were exhausted, including the horses and ready to go home. However, as we were driving the trailer back to the barn the conversation always included what we were going to do next year. The Great Geauga County Fair has been, and I think always will be, a memory maker. Sandi Swanker Is a registered nurse who lives with her husband Jim in Munson. Their son is a firefighter/paramedic and a solider in the National Guard. Their daughter Sarah, who is passionate about horses, will graduate in December with a doctorate in Physical Therapy.
{ the great geauga county fair } Hooray It’s Fair Time
By Anna Fair
The drive into Burton seems like hours. You’ve passed the fairgrounds multiple times in recent weeks, smiling to yourself each time you saw the beginnings of what was always the best part of the summer. The crowd of people, the smell of your favorite fair foods, the sounds of laughter, screaming and music hit you all at once. That’s when you realize that it’s finally here -- The Great Geauga County Fair. The best part of the fair for me was always the anticipation. Trying to see if my favorite rides were up yet, wondering what new exciting things would be waiting. I had a fondness for the things that I could count on: certain rides, certain foods, the animals -- all things that wouldn’t be here without the people who are actually involved in the fair. Micky Gilchrist, a boy scout from troop 6519, helps out with the fair almost a month before hand. They do the landscaping -- a task that takes up almost 3 hours and is completed every Tuesday for 3 weeks leading up to the fair. During the fair, his troop helps out with the fishing at the pond. When I asked him what his favorite part of the fair was, he smiled and said that it had to be hanging out with his friends. I asked my mother the same question. She said that her favorite part was the horses and the donkeys -- another attraction that wouldn’t be there without the help of people involved in the fair -- specifically, 4-H. Jenny Jacobs, now a 21-year-old college student, looked back on her 4-H days with nothing but a positive light. She explained how preparation for the fair started as early as February. Over the
summer they meet club requirements and set up fundraisers. They spend the week before the fair cleaning the grounds, decorating the stalls with a club theme and putting up posters. All of this was in addition to double-checking that the environment was safe for the horses, which arrive the Wednesday before the fair. After that, it’s all about getting the horses adjusted to their new surroundings. She tells me that, while everyone is responsible for their horse, they also look out for others and make sure that no one is left out of the water and on their own. Like many people I know, I haven’t gone to the fair in recent years. It becomes a yearly tradition for many families and, after kids reach a certain age, it loses its appeal. This year, when you’re debating about going to the fair, ask the younger person in your life. Listen to them talk for hours about their favorite memories, and think back on yours. Keep in mind the people in who dedicate most of their year to the fair. Think about the sense of community that the fair brings those people, and what it could do for your family if you went to The Great Geauga County Fair. Anna Fair a seventeen-year-old writer. She’s lived in Middlfield for almost 13 years, went to Cardinal Elementary and is currently attending OHDELA – the Ohio Distance and Electronic Learning Academy for her high school education. After she graduates, she plans on going to college to get a communications degree and then become a published author. You can learn more about her different works at anastasialamuse. wordpress.com.

The Joys of the Geauga Fair By Devin Maze Ahh, it’s that time again! We find ourselves at the point where fall is right around the corner from us. It is a time when everything begins to change. The wind begins to blow, the leaves begin to change colors, and the kids are starting yet another year in school. And then it happens, just when you thought everything was beginning to slow down, the Geauga Fair is back and it is coming to Burton. If you are new to the Geauga County area, why not make this place your oneway destination? Every year, people from all over the county go to the fair to simply have fun, and this place has a number of many great things to see and do, like entering a frog jumping contest or going on the magic tea-cup ride. This place was not only built to entertain you, but to give you and your family something to reminisce about in the future. It doesn’t matter how old you are, how hip or how cool you are. Everybody is allowed to visit The Great Geauga County Fair, so why not go when you can? As a new resident of Geauga County, I can only say that I’ve been there for at least one time in my life, but the stories my friends told me kept me interested and intent on going back this year. The stories were astonishing, and listening to
other people’s experience at the fair made me want to go there. There are actually a lot of things you can do at the fair that I wasn’t even aware about until now. We all know you can ride the rides, but can you handle the excitement of being able to sit and watch an actual Demolition Derby? Or what about witnessing the mind-blowing stunts that the BMX riders perform in the bike rallies? Yep, there are a ton of things you can do at the fair, and this is only just a percentage of what you can do. Those who own pigs can enter their auction for a chance to win hundreds of dollars. Horse Pulling competitions are also common at the fair, where a person was known to win up to $5,000 dollars for their efforts and hard work. Feeling lucky? Why not see who’s got the fastest rooster in the chickenflying contest? You can also participate in the Fair’s famous harness racing, Diaper Dashes, eating contests, and the BandO-Rama. If nothing else, why not walk around and hang with your friends there. After all, there’s nothing more enjoyable than hanging out with the people you care about. Due to my experience, I think that’s what the fair is all about, and I’m sure I speak for a lot of people who are reading this.
Country Fair Let’s all go to the country fair, there’s blossoms and ribbons and hope in the air. The harvest’s in, the endless bin, and Grandpa can bring the old mare. For not long ago to another sound, men of great virtue stood their ground, their world spinning round and round. And lest we forget their treasured souls, ‘midst blossoms and ribbons and stones in a row, ‘round the merry-go-round we go. Our time is sweet in a Country fair. ~ Author unkown

Feathers and Fleece
I want to invite all citizens in Geauga county and beyond to The Great Geauga County Fair. There are so many fun things to do. You can look at and maybe even pet someone’s animals if the owner gives you permission. Many children in the 4-H program are in separate clubs that specialize in different farm animals. The club I belong to is Feathers and Fleece. In our club all the kids raise either poultry or lambs as projects. In poultry, kids raise chickens, ducks, or turkeys or all if they want. The kids in Feathers and Fleece can also raise one, two or three lambs for market. Some kids may raise breeding flocks. To take an animal to the fair, kids have to know how much and what food to feed their animals. They need to walk the lambs to develop muscle and to tame lambs. For market chickens you have to build ramps and other things to make sure the chickens also develop muscle. I do not raise ducks or turkeys but the same principles I assume also are there. After that the kids have to pass a test called skillathon. This test covers diseases, where to inject shots, dunf (drug use notification) forms which they have to turn in before the fair, cuts of meat, if your animal is too hot, cold or if there is a draft. They must complete a workbook for each different species of animal, and medication forms if your animal gets sick. Once the kids pass this test that varies in difficulty depending on age and year in the project. When your animal is at fair you can enter in shows that vary in difficulty and age. There are two basic types of shows: market shows and showmanship. Once you acquire ribbons you can strap them on your jeans so you look better when you are trying to sell your animal. There are two sales this year. The sale for poultry and rabbits is held in a tent across from the arena. The second sale is in the arena and is for large animals including lambs, hogs, goats, beef, and dairy baskets. On Saturday, the poultry and rabbit sales start at 3:30 p.m. and the large animal sale begins at 5 p.m. If you want to look at animals before the sale you can go around and look at the different barns that are kept clean by 4-H members. Even on hot days, it is nice to come to the fair because 4-H members run a milkshake booth everyday where you can buy chocolate, vanilla, strawberry, or even mix two or three flavors. All around, coming to The Great Geauga County Fair is a win-win.

Sew Sew Sweet
This year Sew Sew Sweet has done a lot of exciting things in the process of preparing for fair. We welcomed new members and some were learning how to sew for the first time. The club made cards for the veterans and have plans to make no-sew blankets, wheel chair bags, and help children in poverty from foreign countries learn to sew. The club has also been focused on completing our sewing projects in time for fair and style revue. Meeting every Wednesday, the club members have grown very close and we have all learned a lot. Every one completed their projects and were able to participate in style revue. One member, Emily Nuzum, even advanced to state fair and traveled to Columbus to participate in the state fair’s style revue. Fair week is coming up soon and we are excited to decorate our booth in the junior fair building. We’ve discussed how we are going to decorate it and are excited to execute our plan. As a club we will be working the milkshake booth on Labor Day and we all look forward to that. Lastly, the club will be participating in the fashion show being held at the fairgrounds on Aug. 31 at 2 p.m. The club has been working towards the goal of fair and we are thrilled that it is finally here! Thank you to everyone that has helped us this year and come visit our booth in the Junior Fair Building.

As the summer comes to an end and the Geauga County Fair rolls around, Rider’s Express 4-H Club will be finishing up yet another eventful year. The club members have taken part in monthly meetings, many clinics and horse shows and a handful of community service projects. These dedicated members threw a Valentine’s Day Party for the residents at The Weils, cleaned up Geauga Park District’s Frohring Meadows, helped Punderson State Park employees dig up and replant a vegetable garden and collected items for the Food-a-Thon food drive. All of these events were a great way to give back to the community as well as spend time and bond as a club. Rider’s Express is comprised of members of different ages, schools, and riding abilities and is open to anyone that shares a love for horses. If you are interested in joining Rider’s Express, please contact the advisor, Cheryl Moone, at 440-7083366, e-mail her at tkmoone@gmail.com or visit the club at The Great Geauga County Fair.

Breeders and Feeders
Breeders and Feeders held their annual summer picnic meeting on July 27. Due to inclement weather it was moved inside. Discussed at the meeting were items to prepare us for the fair. The display board for the beef barn and the booth decorations for the Junior Fair Building were discussed. All members must have their fair pictures with their market animal turned in at our barn setup meeting on Sunday, Aug. 25. These pictures must be 4 x 6 and printed horizontally. We also discussed what should be included in the letter to our buyers. Members were reminded to make sure to remind the buyer’s of the new starting time of 3:30 p.m. for the small animals in the tent across from the arena and the large animals would start at 5 p.m. in the arena. Also discussed was the refreshment table and the members needing to bring a dozen snack items bagged individually for the buyers to enjoy. Weigh-in times were discussed and given for each species, if you have questions, please ask your project advisor. Breeders and Feeders members hope to see you at the fair.

Fabulous Fair Food
There are many reasons why we like to wander about The Great Geauga County Fairgrounds. Consider those cute fuzzy rabbits, smiling alpacas and regal looking llamas. Then there are beautiful hand crafted items on display, music shows to watch, rides to go on, races and competitions to root for. But if we’re really honest, one big reason is Fair Food. After walking for hours the time arrives when you have to replenish your energy. Forget calories now and support the vendors. Besides, that freshly-squeezed lemonade has to be healthy. The East Geauga Kiwanis Club, organized in 1958, has had a food stand at the Fair for almost 50 years. It has always stood at the walkway intersection across from the milking cow shed. The present attractive Swiss Chalet booth was designed and built in 2003 by Kiwanis member Bruce Brigham. The hot pulled-pork sandwiches are a big winner at the Fair. They were introduced in 2006 when sales of Swiss cheese and Trail baloney declined. According to organizer Claire Zurbuch, about 75 volunteers will serve you over the course of the five Fair days. Newbury Kiwanis members, students from Cardinal High School’s Key Club and from the Middle School’s Builders’ Club lend a hand. There are three shifts working from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Long-time Kiwanis volunteer Jack Youshak said, “It’s great seeing people you know but haven’t seen for a long time.” Besides pulled-pork the Kiwanis serves combo packs of Swiss cheese and trail baloney or sandwiches of the same. Former Kiwanis president Judy Breedlove boasts that in the course of a typical 5-day Fair 400 pounds of pork will be cooked. All profits, according to member Don Hunter, are returned to the community in the form of youth awards, school activities, senior citizen programs and emergency needs. Want something to wash down that pork sandwich? Then head across the walkway to the 4-H milk shake stand which has been at the Fair since 1956. Ingredients for the shakes come from local suppliers. Approximately 200 4-H Club Members work at the milk shake booth over the 5 Fair days with 60 adult advisers/parents helping out. Don Ondrejka, project adviser, says proceeds from the milk shakes are donated back into the community in various forms. An example is college scholarships for 4-H members of Geauga County. Don also said that a common myth is that the milk for the shakes is piped directly from the cows being milked right next door. This is simply not true since the milk used for the shakes is a processed homogenized product. Right beyond this 4-H stand are picnic tables and benches. So take your pulled-pork sandwich and chocolate milkshake and rest your weary feet for a while before heading out again to enjoy another side of the Great Geauga Fair. “When I was tiny, the county fair came through town. Our parents took us and got tickets for the rides, even though I was scared to death of all of them. Edward was the one who convinced me to go on the merry-go-round. He put me up on one of the wooden horses and he told me the horse was magic and might turn real right underneath me, but only if I didn’t look down. So I didn’t. I stared out at the pinwheeling crowd and searched for him. Even when I started to get dizzy or thought I might throw up, the circle would come around again and there he was. After a while, I stopped thinking about the horse being magic, or even how terrified I was, and instead, I made a game out of finding Edward. I think that’s what family feels like. A ride that takes you back to the same place over and over.” ~ Jodi Picoult, Lone Wolf

The Fair Through My Eyes By Jenn Lanstrum
Every year the fair means a lot; the end of summer, beginning of school, the arrival of fall TV shows, but for me it means that the 5 busiest days of my year have arrived. As a member of both 4-H and Grange, as well as serving on the Junior Fairboard, I have a lot on my plate, but I wouldn’t give up a single second. This year I am also on the Junior Fair Court so I have even more to do, but I can’t wait. It all starts Thursday. Every morning you can find me from 6 to 9 a.m. at the Pomona Grange Diner at the top of the midway serving breakfast; stop by, I’d love to chat. From 9 a.m. on is shows, whether I’m running them or just helping out, it won’t be dull. After shows, I go back to the Grange booth to help close up, but I might sneak out to check out the midways. Friday it continues, breakfast at the Diner and on to the shows for the day. That evening is Coronation, where the 2013 King and Queen will be announced. Next comes Saturday, and it slows down a little, you’ll find me in the barns getting things ready for the auction, running animals back and forth and having a ball. Sunday means Band-O-Rama to watch my brother perform with the Cardinal Huskies Marching Band, as well as spend time with friends. Monday is the last day, and also the quietest, this is the day Junior Fair kids venture forth from the barns to enjoy the last day of Fair, so you can bet I’ll be with them. It might be hectic, but it’s the way I spend my Fair and I love it.

Geauga County Habitat for Humanity is a charitable organization that helps families living in substandard conditions attain simple, decent housing by extending a helping hand, not a hand out.
Say Yes to Corn Dogs There is a lot of talk about how bad fair food is for you, but believe it or not, a corn dog is not a bad choice. At 210 calories, it only contains 25 grams of carb and 10 grams of fat. It’s a nearly perfect blend of protein, carb and fat for walking around at the fair. Remember, you don’t necessarily have to avoid some of the higher calorie and carb food items, just share them. One of the best parts about the going to the fair is being with others, so go with a whole group of people and just try a bite or two of a bunch of different things. That way you can enjoy everything.

The Dress By Sheila Roberts It drowns my gangly limbs in creamy lace; In whirling white and filigreed sateen I glimpse the end of all things commonplace. A smell of roses fills its foamy sheen. My arms are twined in gauzy sleeves like wings Belonging to a newborn butterfly; My old clothes cast aside in rumpled rings – The chrysalis of childhood gone by. Outside this tree of silk I wandered wild; Within its froth I am forever changed. A silver lady, taller than a child Who for her silken grace exchanged A world of spinning sun and brindled shade. This dress is made of more than silk and lace: It forged in me a narrow, silver blade – All slim and cool and strong in steely grace.

In July, the 4-H Ambassadors presented the Junior Fair Livestock Sale opportunity to local business leaders at Great Lakes Outdoor Supply in Middlefield. (l-r) Chuck Nicols, Pat Preston, Dave Green, Jonathan Anderson, Matthew VanDerSchuur, Mackenzie Healy, Tyler Rendlesham, Leah Fine, Susan Roberts, Shelia Roberts, Jennifer Montazzoli, Anna Montazzoli, Max Wolf, Noah McCaskey, Joseph Wolf, Kelsey Rumburg, RJ Jefferson, Ralph Spidalieri, Alisha Faudie and Todd Montazzoli.
How Businesses Can Support 4-H By Sheila Roberts Geauga County 4-H clubs would like to attract more local business owners to the Junior Fair Livestock Auction, where the 4-H members sell the animals that they worked hard all year to raise. Raising animals teaches 4-H members life lessons like responsibility, teamwork, animal husbandry and patience. Buying these prize-winning animals is an excellent publicity opportunity for small local businesses and a chance to support Geauga County youth – not to mention a great way to get tasty, locally raised meat and a tax-deductible purchase. 4-Hers want to get the word out! The Junior Fair Livestock Auction will be held at the Great Geauga County Fair in the Livestock Arena and the Auction Tent on Saturday, Aug. 31. The small animal auction starts at 3:30 p.m. and the large animal auction begins at 5 p.m. The newly formed 4-H Ambassadors, a group of 15 4-H members, have created a presentation explaining everything about the Junior Fair livestock auction to present to local small businesses. In order to make the best presentation possible, the Ambassadors divided in to three small groups and each created a presentation about the Junior Fair Livestock Sale. On July 17, the Ambassadors invited business leaders from the community to choose the winning presentation. Once the best presentation had been selected, some of the members were able to present for the first time to the Burton-Middlefield Rotary Club at the Welshfield Inn on July 31. The Ambassadors also spoke to the Middlefield Chamber of Commerce on Wednesday, Aug. 13 at the Middlefield Historical Society underloft. The 4-H Ambassadors look forward to many more opportunities to share with local businesses. If you would like them to present to your business or community group, please contact Todd Montazzoli at Todd.Montazzoli@us.nestle.com. Sheila Roberts is a member of All Cooped Up and Giggles-n-Stitches 4-H clubs.

Geauga’s Own - Rae DeBevits Raelynn DeBevits will be performing for the 11th year at The Great Geauga County Fair! Her show is on the Midway stage at 2 p.m. on Thursday.
Presenting Chris Higbee Chris Higbee has a passion for country music. He is a complete musical artist skilled in fiddle playing, singing, song writing, and playing various other instruments. Chris’ passion is deeply felt by anyone listening to his work or enjoying in a live performance. Chris’ performance energy is so infectious it has been known to convert the most stubborn noncountry music fan into HigBillies, the self-named fan base of Chris Higbee. His performances always draw a large and committed crowd. Chris Higbee grew up a farm boy with a
musical curiosity and a diligent mother and father. That curiosity quickly became a passion that drove his dreams. “Fiddles Rock,” the first track on Higbee’s new album, tells that story and was inspired by his late father. It was co-written with Higbee’s producer, Tommy Harden and Don Rollins (“It’s Five O’clock Somewhere”). To learn more of Chris Higee visit the website: www. chrishigbee.com. Catch him live at the Great Geauga County Fair Friday, Aug. 30 in a free 8 p.m. show at the Small Grandstand.

Amid the endless sights and sounds of The Geauga Geauga County Fair, be sure to swing by the Park District’s building for a preview of its upcoming exhibit, Something’s Afoot: Nature Just Can’t Stay Put. It is in the Natural Resources Area on the Fairgrounds and will be open Aug. 29 through Sept. 2 from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Since 1996, the Park District’s open wood building has given fairgoers a taste of what their local parks have to offer. This year’s interactive displays showcase a motion-themed exhibit opening in November at The West Woods Nature Center in Russell Township. Movement takes place by land, water and sky. Enjoy highlights of all three at the fair. Black Bears have been spotted in Geauga County. But if they’re here, why we don’t see them more often? Play a game to navigate a Black Bear through suburbia via green corridors. If the weather is good, foot traffic at the fair can be hectic. Ease your mind by dropping a duck into moving water, or watch nature’s movers and shakers in slow-motion in the Motion Picture Theater. See how different seeds disperse on a breeze using the power of a single finger. Visit a live insect terrarium for the sights and sound of insect motion. Working with some extra energy? Put your young’uns in the grassy Animal Olympics course to imitate the ways different critters scoot, slither and swim. Order a list of animals by maximum speed for a chance to win a gift basket, stocked with a big bottle of pure maple syrup collected this year from Swine Creek Reservation’s sugar bush. Stand on the compass rose to learn which direction Monarchs and birds fly south each winter. Speaking of which, why is the Monarch display empty? Where are all the Monarchs this year? Let a naturalist give you the scoop. Friendly staff members and volunteers will always be available to answer questions about Nature exploration, programs and policy, or to take a note and have someone get back to you. Admission to the fair is $7 for adults and free for kids age 12 and younger, with discounts available on certain days. Learn more about the discounts and what else this year’s fair has to offer at http://geaugafair.com. Geauga Park District is online at http://geaugaparkdistrict.org, Facebook, Twitter and YouTube.
Not all Animals are in Stalls at the Fair There will be some hardworking Geauga County animals that you won’t see in stalls or cages at the fair. Some will be competing. There will be a Chicken-Flying Contest, Thursday, Aug. 29 beginning at noon at the Small Grandstand. Hens and roosters both compete, but not against each other. There is a prize for the longest flight of a hen and a rooster. Then the girls get a day off and the boys step in for the Rooster Crowing Contest on Sunday, Sept. 1 at 4 p.m. at the Small Arena. Roosters have 15 minutes to crow, and whoever is most vocal and calls out the most wins. The next day, Monday, Sept. 2, amphibians abound at the Small Grandstand for the Frog Jumping Contest at 3 p.m. in the Indoor Arena. We can all take pride in these high jumpers – contestants are required to be local varieties, so no imported frogs will be taking any trophies. The Great Geauga County Fair Record is 14 feet, 8 inches, so let’s see if that record gets broken this year, If horses are your thing, be at the fair Friday, Aug. 30 at 6 p.m. for the Horse Pulling Contest. It’s a free show located at the Main Grandstand. Enjoy Harness Horse Racing at the Great Geauga County Fair on Saturday, Aug. 31. This live horse racing starts at 12:30 p.m. in the Main Grandstand. While you’re at the fair, grab a snack and take some time out to watch these exciting animal competitions. May the best chicken, horse, rooster and frog win!
Help Hiram’s Pets The Hiram Police Department is excited to announce that they are now a People Care Pet Pantry donation drop-off site. The People Care Pet Pantry is an organization providing families with pets the needed resources to keep the pets in their homes during financial crisis and hardships. Doing so reduces owner surrenders to overtaxed animal shelters, reduces medically unnecessary euthanasia, and help families honor their responsibility to provide life long, loving homes for their pets. Portage County currently has several dropoff sites where folks can donate cat/dog food, pet toys, pet health care and other essential items, for families in Portage County who have fallen upon financial hardships. “I am excited and proud to be part of this program,” Chief Ed Samec said. “There are many area families who are in financial crisis and have pets. This program helps keep the pets in the homes and provides food, healthcare items, and toys to the beloved pets who are a vital part of our families.” Donations can be dropped off at the Hiram Police Department lobby 24/7 located at 11617 Garfield Road in Hiram (44234). People Care Pet Pantry will be at the Hiram Police Department “Fill-a-Police Car” Food Drive/ Pet Adoption event on Sept. 21 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Hiram Police Department. Please bring items to help support your neighbors and their furry family members.
Master Gardener Volunteers at The Great Geauga County Fair It’s here, The Great Geauga County Fair! Fair goers are invited to visit the Master Gardener booth in the Agriculture Building, Thursday, Aug. 29 -- Monday, Sept. 2. This year’s theme, Bloom Where You are Planted, will feature unique and creative ideas for gardens, both big and small. The Master Gardener family friendly booth is an annual must-see Fair experience! Master Gardener Volunteers will be on duty to answer your gardening questions.

Need a New Water Well?
Then call a water well drilling specialist that drills with a modern rotary drill rig and uses plastic well casing that will not rust!
Most wells drilled in one day or less! No job too small or too big! We do it all when it comes to your water well needs.
The installation above of a 12 inch well beside the Ohio river is one example of a job Southwest Drilling has done for the oil and gas industry.

Greener. Cleaner. Better. BioBlocks are a carbon neutral, renewable, environmentally friendly alternative to traditional home and industrial heating fuel. Their optimal size, shape, and density produce a long, even output of heat. BioBlocks burn cleaner and more efficient than firewood, and are ideal for fireplaces and woodstoves, as well as campfires, outdoor fire pits, and grilling. BioBlocks are made from 100% recycled hardwood and contain no chemicals or artificial binders.
