Gone But Not Forgotten By Ellie Behman Reading about The Great Geauga County Fair brought back some delightful memories. Although I am not a resident of Geauga, my memories of Geauga Lake Amusement Park have stayed with me since I was a little girl and I have always had a warm feeling in my heart for the county. My dad was a long time employee of Thompson Products and they held the annual picnic at the park every year. It was an exciting time for me and I looked forward to the rides, the cotton candy and all the sights and sounds an amusement park could offer. Since I was the baby of the family and just a tad spoiled and used to getting my way, my poor father had to endure endless rides with me as Mom wouldn’t go near them. He was such a good sport and everything was going so well until we decided to go on a ride that went in circles. Round and round we went and I was having so much fun I didn’t notice the color draining off my dad’s face until we got off. That sweet man stumbled off the ride, sat down on a bench and it was then that I realized his skin had turned into a new shade of green. The rest of the day is a bit of a blur but I know dad did his best to please me and that memory has stayed with me these many years later. His ever present smile and twinkling eyes always made me happy, even when things didn’t go as well as expected. The amusement park is long gone but not forgotten. It is comforting, however, to know that The Geauga County Fair shares the same soil as the park of yesterday. Back then Dad went the extra mile just to make sure I had a good time. This year, as moms and dads took their young ones to The Geauga County Fair, I hope they shared a ride or two with their kids. It will have made a happy memory for all of them and one they can relive as the years pass by. Hopefully kids took pity on their parents and did’t make them ride anything that goes around in circles. After all, green may not be their favorite color, and they will surely have thanked you for that.

Here’s a tiny taste of the trivia you can find about The Great Geauga County Fair if you visit http://geaugafair.com/geaugafair_ history.html. This official Fair Web site has much more for you to discover about this fantastic yearly event, so be sure to log on and learn. The first Great Geauga County Fair was in 1823. This “Fair and Cattle Show” was held on just one day, Oct. 23, in Chardon. Rail pens were built on the square for livestock and agricultural and domestic products were exhibited in the old log courthouse. Premiums were awarded for the best exhibits in each class, among them were awards for the best: bull-$10 to Eleazer Hickox; heifer-$8 to Edward Paine; buck$6 to Lemuel Punderson’s Administrator; ewe-$6 to Edward Paine Jr.; piece of woolen cloth-$6 to Mrs. Sophie Howe; piece of bleached linen-$5 to Mrs. Catherine Kerr; table linen-$4 to Mrs. Alice Beardslee; grass or straw bonnet-$4 to Miss Caroline Baldwin. During the 1800s and 1900s, the dates for The Geauga County Fair were moved up, held earlier in the season in an effort to

showcase the year’s harvest, yet avoid Ohio’s unpredictable late fall weather. The Great Geauga County Fair is now held annually each Labor Day weekend, Thursday through Monday, and is the “grand finale” highlight to Geauga County’s summer fun events. Since its inception, The Great Geauga County Fair has been held continuously each year despite multiple national conflicts, including the Civil War, Spanish American War, two World Wars, the Great Depression, Korea, Vietnam, the Gulf War, and various droughts and hardships. Each year a quarter million people of all ages from northeastern Ohio and beyond flock to the Burton Fairgrounds, in the heart of Geauga County’s scenic Amish and maple syrup country to enjoy the more than 12,000 exhibits, animals, rides, food, music, entertainment and special attractions. The Fair’s motto is “Something for Everyone Since 1823.” The “Great” in the Fair’s name and seal was officially added in this century to signify the Fair’s seniority as the “Great Granddaddy” of Ohio’s county fairs.

Did you know? ... Fayre is an archaic spelling of fair, used mostly from the 15th to the 17th century. This spelling is now confusingly used for both fair and fare, the latter in the sense of ‘food and drink’. In itself, the word means a gathering of stalls and amusements for public entertainment. The alternate spelling is an old-fashioned affectation and is used in order to remind revelers and participants of medieval fayres and markets. It is mainly used for fairs that are essentially leisure rather than business events like trade fairs and rides.

John Rowland then invited me along to talk with the young Amish men who would be competing later that day. John explained to these guys that safety was crucial and that they would all be required to wear helmets. Many of the Standardbreds driven by Amish are experienced, retired racehorses. I noticed that these young Amish men not only brought horses to the races but also their own audience of young, adoring, female fans. John explained to me that these races were becoming more and more of an attraction for Amish racers and audiences. Continued on page 4

John Rowland is director of Harness Racing for The Great Geauga County Fair. John has been involved in harness racing for many years and his passion for the sport is contagious. I called him several weeks before fair time and as we were talking he suggested that I might ride in the pace car during a race. I could not think of a better idea, but he could not guarantee a spot in the car, as this year, he would be hiring a new driver for the job. On the Saturday of race day, I found John and reminded him of his offer. He quickly introduced me to Bob Mount, the driver, and Danny Murry, the race time recorder, both from Wauseon, Ohio. These men were more than happy to let me tag along.

The View From the Roof Continued from page 3 At The Great Geauga County Fair, the signal of race time is the singing of the national anthem. This year the Star Spangled Banner was performed a cappella by Maria Vrenka. During this fabulous rendition, the crowd watched as an airplane overhead dropped a parachutist flying a large American flag. He landed center field to the applause of the crowd, very effective. It seems that harness racing in Ohio is suffering in popularity. The first three races were one-horse races. Nice for the racers, they each went home with purses that made their day worthwhile. All they had to do was finish. All of the other races averaged four to five horses each and presented exciting, close finishes. The Fair king and queen, Tom Somrack and Danielle Daugherty, were the first honored with a ride in the pace car; they were followed by Senator John Eklund. I noticed that as each climbed from the car they appeared to be very warm. So when it was my turn, I made a pathetic appeal to Dan to trade places. He owned the prime seat; it was situated so that he was facing backwards, high up and out of the sunroof of the car. Well these fine gentlemen made adjustments so that I could squeeze up and out of the top of the car, be perfectly positioned, comfortable and cool while grabbing some great photos. We drove half way around the track and waited until the horses were a couple hundred feet behind us and then sped ahead. I heard Bob say something about moving close to 40 miles per hour. The men neglected to tell me; they stop and pull over very quickly so as to allow fast moving horses to race by. Bob hit the brakes, swerved and stopped. I grabbed something, don’t remember what, but do recall I came close to knocking Danny from his prime seating area. We all survived and laughed. I photographed some excellent scenes and enjoyed the view from the roof on the next race as well. I didn’t have to be told twice to be ready for the quick stop and was braced the second time, as was Danny. I want to thank John Rowland, Bob and Danny for making the day, for me, one to remember. Thank you, Gentlemen.

The 2011 Junior Fair Court congratulates the 2012 Great Geauga County Fair King and Queen, Tom Somrack and Danielle Daugherty (at right) and the 2012 Junior Fair Court of D.J. Green, Evan Parker, Dakota Ward, Kelsey Rumburg, Victoria Sevich and Rebecca Toth. The court is selected after a series of interviews conducted by a few judges who base their decision on community involvement and character. Members of the court must be 1618 years old. After the interviews and the court is selected the list of candidates as well as their biographies is sent to each 4-H club who then vote on the candidates as a club. The king and queen are not selected solely on popularity vote but the judges also rate each candidate based on their service and character. The winners were announced Thursday night of Fair at 7 p.m. at the Junior Fair stage.

The Riders Express Horse 4-H Club congratulates its members on their many successes at the 2012 Great Geauga County Fair. The club had 12 members bring horses to fair, and a total of 13 participants in the Junior Fair horse shows, evening fun-show classes, and Western and English Open shows. Those members who did not show horses were still active members by being ambassadors for 4-H at the Fair Fest in front of the Junior Fair Building, and by helping decorate stalls and prepare for the Fair. Each and every member plays a role in Riders Express, and we’ll truly miss the five members who graduated this year. One of the fun classes at the county fair was Costume Class, in which five Riders Express members placed. Alison Skok, with her horse, Paris, took first place as Little Bo Peep and her lost sheep. Hannah Zanetti and Janet Kautz dressed as a milk carton and a cookie, with horse Shadow, who was dressed as a cow, came in second place. In fifth place were Isabel Pignolet and Anna Kotowski, as a fairy and a steward, and horse Norman, who was a unicorn. Alison Skok and Paris went on to win first place in the All Animal Costume Class Finals, which is the second consecutive year that a Riders Express member has won that title. Congratulations on the fun and creative costumes. Riders Express also wishes to announce its 2013 executive club officers, who were elected as follows: President, Gina Moschella; Vice President, Cassie Holub; Secretary, Sydney Koenig and Treasurer, Ryan Lurch. Other club officers will be elected at the October Riders Express meeting. Congratulations 2013 officers!

Bradford Hess and Nathan Baise from Middlefield wash Mitch. They are from Star Stuck Stable on Route 534. The majority of the horses shown by Star Struck Stable have come from rescue situations.

Stairs and Millwork Custom-Built (l-r)Jeff, Jim and Jackie Polsen from Sagamore Hills showed four cattle at the Fair and have been for 35 years. It all began when Jeff and brother Jonathon were young. Jackie says, “We had one cow, two cows, three cows and before you knew we had a whole herd.” Currently their farm is more of a hobby.“ Something to spend money on,” said Jim Polsen. Jackie recalled when they first started coming, they would sleep in the truck on straw bales, now the Polsens sleep on cots in the barn and make a weekend of it.

The weather was great and the Swing in’ Hams 4-H club did a wonderful job. Everyone did great in showmanship, market and the livestock sale. It was another awesome and great year for the livestock sale, thanks to all of our 2012 buyers. We all really appreciate all the support you do for 4-H. The Swing in’ Hams club also had a fun time working the milkshake booth. It’s always fun working in there with the club. Only 351 days left till next year’s Great Geauga County Fair!
