Sunday dinners were a highlight of my youth during the 40s. Chicken soup was a favorite on cold crispy days and the huge pot was filled to the brim with chicken and a variety of vegetables from our garden that mom had canned. Her homemade bread topped off a delicious lunch.

She would bring out her delicate lace tablecloth that was used only on Sundays and on special occasions. Sometimes we would entertain our minister and his family. Dad, with very little encouragement, would play his handmade violin for us. Mom did her very best to stop him, but he continued undaunted.

But back to the chicken soup and the most unforgettable dinner guest. Each week, mom would make the long trip by street car to the West Side Market and bring home a plump, fresh chicken for our next Sunday meal. Up to that point I had never given much thought as to what the chicken looked like before it got to our table. It was months later that I began to get my “education” on the life expectancy of a chicken, from “peep” to “pot.”

It began on the day that mom and dad decided to purchase about two dozen baby chicks just before Easter. I loved having those noisy, furry little creatures in the house. They quickly became my pets. Mom would feed them each day and kept them in a box near the stove with a light above them to keep them warm. I now look back and see the irony of them being raised so close to the stove. Who knew they would someday end up back there, but I digress. I watched them grow and, before long, the fluffy, colored wisps were replaced with stiff, white feathers.

They soon became too big to keep indoors and were moved to a fenced in area

of the backyard. Each day I collected eggs and chased those chickens around the pen.

One afternoon, I went out into the yard to feed them and noticed that one of my “pets” was missing. It didn’t occur to me at that moment what had happened to one of my loving friends.

As I sat down to dinner the following Sunday, I looked at my bowl of chicken soup and asked mom where the chicken came from. I hadn’t seen her bring home a chicken that week from the market. Her startled look at my question soon gave way to a gentle, quiet explanation of how the chicken became my dinner.

I was horrified and tearfully refused to eat. To this day, when I sit down to a plate of chicken, I can still picture those tiny, fuzzy friends running around the yard.

The lovely mild days of fall are the perfect time to get outdoors and organize your space and tools. It’s time to remove your dead annuals and divide and mulch hardy perennials. Annuals typically die when temperatures drop below freezing, but perennials often appear as though they too have bitten the bullet. That’s because their top growth dies back, although in most cases the root ball is hardy enough to survive even extreme temperatures, especially if it’s covered with a layer of mulch. The best time to mulch perennials is after the first hard freeze. Just make sure you don’t cover the crown or center of the plant, because that can lead to rot. It’s also time to fertilize your lawn with a high phosphorous mix to ensure healthy grass in the spring.

Be sure to clean your summer garden tools before storing them for the winter.

Prepare your yard equipment for storage by draining fuel from all gas-operated equipment such as lawn mowers, leaf blowers and chain saws. While you’re out in the barn or garage, check to see that all of your snow equipment is up and running before the first snowflakes fall. Organize your snow clearing gear. We know how unexpectedly snow can appear in this area, so when it arrives you’ll want to have shovels, roof rakes and snow blowers where you can get to them. Be careful where you store equipment. An outbuilding may not be as well insulated as a garage incorporated in with a house. Equipment that is stored out in the elements, exposed to heat and cold extremes, can develop problems if the gasoline can no longer vaporize and flow into the combustion chamber of the engine. Drain garden hoses and store them inside. Also shut off outdoor water valves in cold weather. Any water left in exterior pipes and faucets can freeze, expand and break the pipes.

On the porch and deck, check the supports, stairs, and railings and make sure the handrails can support someone slipping on snow or ice. Clean porch and deck furniture and look for any needed repairs. Cover and store outdoor furniture and barbecues in a protected area. Make sure all soil is emptied from pots and planters. Dirt left in clay pots will freeze and cause the pots to crack if left outside.

Don’t forget our feathered friends.

Inspect and clean your bird feeders and replace any that are damaged so they last through winter’s blasts. Trim dead branches out of trees to prevent them from coming down and causing damage in a winter storm.

Getting these things done and out of the way in the fall will allow you more time indoors drinking hot chocolate during the harsh winter months, and it will aid you in welcoming, not dreading, the necessary chores of next spring.

{ fall ~ home inside & out } Made for the Shade With the fall season upon us there is truly nothing like the beautiful foliage offered by trees as they begin to turn. A burst of color is brought by favorites like the bright orange of Sugar Maples or the deep red of Red Sunset Maples. But besides aesthetics, trees also have the great benefit of producing shade. If you’re looking to add trees to your property for both beauty and purpose there are many different varieties of Maples and Oaks for you to consider, all of which have different sizes and characteristics. Other options include Cleveland Select Pear, River Birch, Buckeye Tree and Sour Gum. The key is to consider the mature size of the tree in relation to the size of the landscape area.

Look Up. It’s critical to make sure you have the appropriate tree in terms of size and space. Before planting a tree you must anticipate long-term growth.

Although it may be many years until the tree reaches full height, you have to keep overhead utility lines in mind so that your tree doesn’t ultimately grow into the wires. It’s important to have the correct tree for the correct space.

Look Down. While the roots of your tree are small now, as the tree establishes itself and the roots grow, they can begin to take up much more space. It’s important to plant your tree in an area where the

roots will not grow into underground piping or septic systems. Roots have also been known to grow under sidewalks or patios and push them up if not planted at a safe distance. This is why it’s so critical to have a professional landscape design done for any major planting project.

Look Around. As you decide on the ideal location for your tree, think about what you’d like to accomplish in the long-term. Trees can provide a wonderful shade to patio or deck areas. Cooling off your outdoor space with some shade makes spending time outdoors even more pleasant. In addition, a couple strategically placed trees will even cool a house down and could save you some money on your heating bill. While large trees can take several decades to reach their full height, you can still achieve a great look with various shrubs which become full-grown in three to five years.

But as with larger trees, it’s still important to be aware of what the full-grown height will be in order to appropriately plant desired shrubs. As you begin thinking about the types of trees and shrubs you’d like to plant - and where you should plant them - we can aid you with both the design and execution of your project.

I promised my wife I would not take on our new house build as the general contractor. I lied. After discussions with several builders, I decided to take on my “last house build” (I am not building again at my age) as the GC and also the designer. I am well qualified and paying myself the 35 percent fee is pleasing to my wallet.

I must confess that I did hire a project manager and an architect; I am not qualified to engineer a structure and the project manager was at my wife’s insistence. She wants the house completed in case I meet my demise during this build; possibly by her hand. A new house build can test the resolve of any marriage!

This is not a project for the average DIY person though it is manageable for the well-organized, building- experienced and time-available individual or couple.

I am building a ranch-style handicap accessible home even though neither one of us is currently handicapped; this could change as we age and I want to be prepared.

I purchased a long-term care policy with home care and this would facilitate that provision in the policy. I desperately want to stay in my home as long as possible and having a home that is wheel chair or walker friendly will be a plus.

This includes 36-inch doors, lower light switches and higher placed electrical outlets.

I am also using the lumber drops as backer boards so that I can install grab bars in shower, tub and toilet areas. I am installing those now since I have friends and relatives who will appreciate them.

I am also using as many maintenance free products as possible and there seems to be no end to the availability of “vinyl” that looks great and will last forever, or at least until I am gone.

Building an energy efficient home is another goal since energy prices could skyrocket in the future; I want to be able to heat this place with a good argument!

Insulation, especially sprayed foam isn’t cheap but there is no better and less expensive time to install it than now and it pays you back every year, winter and summer, as well as reducing noise.

Speaking of noise; did you know they now have a high-density drywall board to hang in rooms you want a bit quieter?

I am having it placed in my bedroom, guest bath and my study; my wife doesn’t like to hear me cursing the politicians while I am watching the news.

Assuming I survive this project, I will be reporting my progress in future articles.
