Science DOES NOT PROVE; Science eliminates error.

Research on scientific research reveals interesting facts. One finding is that scientific results have a seven-year halflife … meaning every seven years half of everything ‘proven’ we find erroneous. This is good because it clearly shows science discards errors for more accurate facts as understanding evolves. Science does this openly with humility; it takes humility to admit error.

However, research on medical research reveals that the pressure to publish is so great that researchers ‘adjust’ results to favor personal interest rather than facts.

Some suggest that everything (in medicine) ‘proved’ in the last 60 years is trash because of blatant bias, improper analysis, and funding from sources demanding favorable results. This is science?!

On the other end (reference David Eagleman, neuroscientist) comparing science to religion, Eagleman states there is no evidence to support atheism. Yet we have an over-abundance of fact to not support the tenets of any religion. It takes humility to admit error; compare how often religion admits error or defends error.

On yet another end, culture and politics - neither admits error and both go to extraordinary lengths with pride bordering on arrogance after victory or defeat.

So where do we turn for advice? My brother, in a family discussion stated that I see everything as ‘black is black’ and ‘white is white’ with no in-between. Another who thinks I take an extremist position presenting neutral information. Black and white are illusions – how black is black (we measure dark based on the amount of light present), how infinite is infinity, how vegan is vegan? If it is impossible to state a firm

definition without exception, there is no foundation upon which to take a stand.

So it is in-between –in the ‘gray’ area. How gray is gray - including tint, hue, and white balance? Wars and fights erupt arguing the in-between. What is the best diet? Which drug is best? Is surgery an option? Is chiropractic quackery?

Vaccination? Who is an authority over what is best for health – the government, religion, scientists, or so-called ‘authorities’ that write a book? If it is impossible to state a firm ruling without exception, there is no foundation. Ego Rule #1: Every rule has an exception except this one.

My writing is a challenge -for me too! I sift through opinions, biases, preferences, and research (these are synonyms) seeking something useful. Authority figures tell everyone what is best for everyone without considering the uniqueness of DNA. Opinions about me based on just one article is an unfair assessment. If you read a few dozen, it is evident that I try my garshdarnest to tell everyone to listen to nobody, including me! Pay attention to the body -your body.

The only person in the world with the authority to tell you how to improve health is you. To what must we pay attention?

This is not an easy task. Anyone that offers general advice – not specific advice is in error. But there is a more important question. Do people want health, or do they want to fit in?

I may say don’t smoke or drink; don’t do risky things (football, racing); don’t join cults (like religion, science, or politics); don’t do drugs, etc – but will anyone don’t ? The answer is, “Look around!” Not taking responsibility for one’s own best advice (self ) causes pain, suffering, disease, anguish, and heartbreak. If you feel these things, you didn’t pay attention to your self.

If you see these things in others, they didn’t pay attention to their self. What do you see when you look around?

Home Delivered Meal Drivers Needed in Middlefield!!!

The Geauga County Department on Aging is in need of Home Delivered Meal Drivers. These volunteers, once trained, can deliver meals as a substitute (when the driver is unavailable), once a month or as often as they would like. Companies and civic groups organize their members to reduce the number of times individuals volunteer.

Meal routes are delivered Monday through Friday and provide a nutritious lunch for 10 and 15 homebound seniors.

If you are 18 years of age or older, have a valid driver’s license and proof of insurance, the Department on Aging needs your help.

health and wellness Why Balance is So Important to You and Your Health Dr. Adam M Cramer, PT, DPT As the weather around our community starts to change the surfaces that we walk on can become more slippery. Falls are much more common which can result in a variety of injuries and disabilities. Falls cost our healthcare system and tax payers an estimated $500 million a year1. This does not include other costs associated to the individual, which include disability, dependence, unemployment, and side effects of inactivity. Falls and loss of balance can occur with anyone at any age, but are most common with individuals 65 years and older2. There are a multitude of reasons why we fall and this can include decreases in strength and coordination, neuropathy of the feet, vision changes, low light environments and lack of general physical conditioning.

Balance is the ability to maintain control of a particular body position while performing a given task with minimal postural sway2. This could be achieved simply by sitting at a table upright with your back off of the chair, standing on one leg, performing a squat/lunge or riding a bike. Good muscle control reduces energy demands and minimizes fatigue and therefor reduces injury risk. To perform efficient movements across a variety of activities and tasks, we need to be able to maintain control of our body positioning during static and dynamic activities with implementing visual feedback strategies3.

Static balance is maintaining balance while standing still and dynamic balance is maintaining balance while moving. An example of using dynamic-visual feedback strategies includes using the Nintendo Wii balance board and gaming system with direct supervision and training from a licensed physical therapist. By improving your static and dynamic balance you will be able to perform any activity longer, reduce your risk for falls and enjoy a higher quality of life.

Everything we do relies heavily on our ability to balance, yet maintaining physical balance skills is one of the most underrated aspects of well-being and one of the easiest to improve upon. As we age, we gradually start to lose our muscle strength, vision and sensory perception. All of these things contribute to our ability to balance effectively and safely. As a result of the general aging process, our mobility can be compromised and lack of mobility can lead to falling which most likely could result in injury and hospitalization.

The good news is that your physical balance can improve fast! Balance is a learned skill that can be maintained and improved by participating in a physical therapy balance program. Balance exercises can strengthen your proprioception. Which basically means by performing exercises tailored to our own physical needs it can help the body to better position your muscles and allow you to sense where your body needs to be without looking. In addition, practicing balance builds muscle and increases range of motion in the joints, which helps in distributing weight evenly, creating overall stability and reducing risk for falls4. Not only will your balance improve by performing balance exercises but it will also increase your bone density, improve circulation, improve ability to walk without a cane or walker and improve brain functioning5.

If you want to continue to do the things that you love in life from fishing and golfing, to just walking and enjoying nature, then you have to work at improving your balance and strength. It only takes one misstep to keep you from doing what you love.

Healthy and Happy Geauga

I

t’s easy to see why Geauga County continues to rank high in studies: Fourth Best County in the Nation to Raise a Family in 2008, Healthiest County in Ohio in 2014, and most recently in the Top 10 Happiest Places in the United States in 2015!

As I watch the news and hear stories each sadder than the one before, I count my blessings that I live in Geauga County.

In the past, money raised by the Quilt and Craft Auction has been used to fund Therapeutic Riding Programs, Special Olympics, summer camps, dances, Christmas program, summer picnics, Family Resource program, Enrichment program, Senior Prom and class trips, and other special events.

Early risers may also enjoy a hearty all-you-can-eat pancake breakfast, complete with Geauga County’s rich maple syrup from 7 to 10 a.m.

Admission and parking to the auction are FREE. The pancake breakfast will cost $7 for adults, $4 for children 3 to 12, and children 2 and under are free, payable at the door.

Guests at the Quilt and Craft Auction will have an opportunity to bid on more than 25 handmade Amish quilts, Amish handmade wood furniture, crafts and much more. A silent auction, Chinese raffle, HUGE Amish bakery, and cash and carry Holiday Shop will round out the day’s activities.

Hearing so many stories on the news about people afraid to be outside or even letting their kids outside, makes me thankful for our area even more.

Living in a rural area also gives us an abundance of fresh food and produce that many people do not have the luxury of. If you are really ambitious, you can extend that fresh food throughout the winter months through canning and freezing.

I would guess the majority of us know where we can buy just about any farm-fresh product we need; milk, eggs, produce, even meat … all of this plays a huge factor in our health and happiness.

Geauga County isn’t perfect … but I think we are fortunate that it comes pretty close.

The Stephen Polakowski Benefit Donation Fund Thirty- four year old Steve Polakowski, a Cardinal High School graduate, was lifeflighted to Cleveland Metro Health after injuries suffered in a motor vehicle accident on Sunday morning Sept. 27, 2015. He underwent a six-hour surgery to repair damage to his cervical spine. He is currently in critical condition and paralyzed from his shoulders down. Steve is a self-employed computer specialist and an active outdoors man. He loves fishing, scuba diving and biking and worked out at the GYM in Middlefield.

Middlefield Care Center Breastfeeding Support

By Jaime A. Fisher, RN/DON Nurse Administrator Hello again. So soon, you say? Yeah, why not? I bring a little different message this time … I recently took a continuing education course at Metro Health. I had the opportunity to explore some of the evidence-based breastfeeding facts.

There’s so much science behind what we do know. Americans have adopted this “prove to me” attitude before effort is exerted. So when it comes to breastfeeding, Americans are behind the learning curve.

If you want education on feeding babies, all you need to do is ask a farmer! Any farmer will tell you it’s important to get newborn farm animals up to nurse within that first hour if possible. Babies just don’t do well if they don’t have that first early feeding. They can become sick, and the mother’s milk won’t come in very fast. It takes a long time for that baby to come around.

Three key points that are now backed by scientific evidence: · Newborns should breastfeed within the first few hours of life. ·

Breastfeeding moms can double their milk supply in 48 hours if early feeding is successful.

·

Breastfeed newborns experience less illnesses; such as: ear infections, upper respiratory infections, and have less allergies, just to name a few.

Breastfeeding to me just makes senses. It’s what I grew up with in a household of six children and a mother who delivered at a birthing center. Now, we have so much research behind why breastfeeding is best.

The Care Center cares about breastfeeding moms. We want you and your newborn to be successful. Call the Care Center if you would like help or support. One-on-one home visits are available. It doesn’t matter if you delivered at the Care Center.

health and wellness Square Dance for Fitness and Fun Modern Western Square Dance (not what you did in Junior High) is making a comeback in our community. It’s an excellent avenue for all ages to have fun and get fit in mind and body. It’s also difficult nowadays to find activities that the whole family can join in on that’s active and doesn’t involve electronics.

Square Dancing has been around for decades, but it has evolved to include current music and casual clothes. Full petticoat skirts and ties are an option but no longer required. Yes, swing your partner and do-si-do, but do it to Lady Gaga, Little Texas, or Lynyrd Skynyrd.

Geauga County is lucky to have local callers in the community. A caller is the person who plays the music, sings and gives direction to the dancers on the floor.

So how does the caller get started?

One caller, John Ramsey of Munson, tells his story. It started in 2005 when his daughter, Caitlyn, and wife Becky, were involved with the 4-H Cloverleaf Square Dance Club. They would go dancing and always came home smiling and happy - which is natural for all square dancers.

John could not help but want to join in. He has always appreciated music and plays in his family band Copper Kettle. In 2007,

he finally picked up a microphone and volunteered to help out the 4-H kids. He was hooked.

In 2010, he decided to become a professional Caller/Instructor. He joined Callerlab International Callers Association and obtained his ASCAP/BMI license for performing music. John has gone on and instructed not only the 4H kids in Burton but also dancers in Wickliffe, Salem, Brookfield and Warren. He calls at dances all over northeast Ohio and western Pennsylvania and has performed at the State Conventions held in Dayton, Columbus, Akron and Cleveland.

What does John say about Square Dancing? “It’s the best kept secret in the country. You can’t understand how much fun it is until you do it.”

So put down your iPads and smart phones, bring the whole family, and go home smiling! Enjoy a night of square dancing Oct. 31 from 8:30 to 10:30 p.m. at the Munson Township Hall, 12210 Auburn Road, Munson. The event is free. Come one, come all. Join the fun after trick-or-treating.

Home Delivered Holiday Meals for Seniors The Geauga County Department on Aging will offer a free traditional holiday meal to any Geauga County Seniors, age sixty (60) and older, who will be home and alone on Thanksgiving Day, Nov. 26 and/or Christmas Day, Dec. 25.

A friendly volunteer will deliver a hot holiday meal to the senior’s home and spend a little time visiting on Thanksgiving and/or Christmas day.
