Memories of School Time … School Time Memories
School Memories

I remember when I started to school in 1947, we walked to a country school, all eight grades and not just an Amish school. We had about 2 miles. In the wintertime, we were cold and the teacher helped us take off our wraps. She was so good to us. I can remember her sitting in the desk with me to help me when I was in first and second grades.
When I started school, we went to Parkman Elementary. Each morning, we would sing a song where we would take turns saying another pupil’s name. And each time someone would say this one girl’s name, she would cry. She didn’t want to say another pupil’s name, as she was very shy. (No, it wasn’t me!) Our children went to Tory Parochial School on Patch Road. Grandpa John drove the school hack for several years. One day as they were going around the corner, the tugs became loose and daughter Sylvia was sitting right in front with Grandpa and happened to see what was happening. Well by the time he had the horses stopped, she was the first one off the hack! (She had to get to the back of the hack to get off.)
Beginning School

Back in 1948, my parents lived on Girdle Road where Harvey Frey lives. I was 6 years old and shy and nervous to start the first day of school in first grade at Mesopotamia Public School. For some reason, I had to go barefoot on the school bus and I’ll never forget how some big high school girls stepped on my toes and made fun of my bare feet … it still hurts when I remember it.

Sept. 3, 2014: Today is the first day of school here on Georgia Road. It’s interesting to watch all the children coming. They look pretty excited, especially the first graders.
