West Farmington Community Festival | July 2015
TWO LIFE LONG FARMINGTON RESIDENCE RECEIVE WELL DESERVED RECOGNITION DURING UPCOMING FESTIVAL CELEBRATION William Raymond Hickox “Bill” named 2015 Parade Marshal Bill was born on Sept. 14, 1961 at St. Joseph Hospital in Warren, Ohio to Dale and Carol Hickox. Bill was the third child born to Dale and Carol and is the sibling of Dennis Hickox (Canal Winchester, OH), Ron Hickox (Champion, Ohio) and Joyce Badenhop (Bellefontaine, OH). Bill is a lifelong resident of West Farmington, growing up on the family farm on State Route 88, where he still proudly resides. While growing up, Bill’s parents worked outside the home, however his Dad loved farming and insisted on maintaining their small 40-acre farm raising beef cattle and growing various crops, mainly hay and corn. Bill’s parents instilled the love of the country, the value of hard work, and working together in each of their children by assigning responsibilities at an early age to help run the farm; everything from feeding the cows, bailing hay, working in the hay mound, cleaning out the barn, driving the tractors, planting the fields, weeding the garden, cleaning the house, or mowing the lawn. Everyone had a job; although Bill’s siblings may say that Bill had a unique way of landing in the roll of supervising more often than they did! After retiring from the outside work force, Bill’s family owned and operated Country Crème for nearly 20 years and Bill helped deliver soft serve ice cream to many of the families in our community on hot summer nights. Bill’s favorite childhood memories
Joseph Charles Cleer “Joe” recipient of the 2015 Community Award.
include camping in the family woods on weekends where the family kept a retired 1970s Skylark camper and waking up to the smell of eggs and bacon being cooked by his Dad on the cast iron stove in the woods. Bill also remembers fishing in their lake and swimming at the neighbors pond owned by Hans and Beth Schalets’s on special occasion. The Schalet pond was always nicer than the Hickox pond because it had a sand bottom. The Schalet’s were close neighbors and always brought a special gift at Christmas time for the Hickox gang to enjoy. Bill also remembers large Hickox Christmas parties held at the K of P Hall in West Farmington, the lighting of the town’s Christmas tree in the ballpark every December to start the Christmas season. The star at the top of the tree could be seen from his kitchen door of the old farm house. Holiday bingo parties at the fire department where the winners took home turkeys for their holiday dinner are also a fond memory of Bill and he still enjoys playing Bingo during the festival. As a matter of fact he was probably playing at the firehouse last night. Bill’s favorite memories of past festivals are the fireman’s water battle behind the firehouse, which he thinks should be brought back, and riding with his Dad on the International or John Deere tractor to pull his nieces and nephews on family floats when they were younger so they could participate in the parade. Bill attended early elementary at West Farmington Elementary before transitioning to Fairhaven School in Niles
Joe recently celebrated his 43rd birthday on June 25 with family and friends. Joe has been married 22 years to Beth (Dyson) Cleer. They have two children, son Michael Cleer (age 12)
and daughter Kaylee Cleer (age 17). They reside north of town on Girdle Road next door to the home Joe grew up in. It is a good bet that if Joe isn’t working for the City of Chardon (a position he has held for fifteen years) he can be found at Continued on page 4
Joe spent many nights along with other members of the Farmington Fire Department working on the 1915 Model T/1916 Hallock Chemical Fire Truck (pictured) back to “parade” condition. Joe is seated behind the wheel during the 2011 Farmington Festival.

the Farmington Fire Department, West Farmington Water Plant, a Festival meeting (treasurer), or plowing the Village streets when the snow is falling. Even with his busy schedule, Joe will make the time to help a friend or anyone else that needs it. It is likely that this personality trait is the reason Joe joined the Fire Department in 1989. Today he is an EMT - basic, Firefighter 1 and Lieutenant at Station 22. Somehow Joe does find time to do what he enjoys including fishing, tractors and cars. He is a member of the Trumbull County Ground Pounders with both his father and son. Joe Cleer is a community man, family man, good friend and a hard worker. He is friendly and approachable and happy to assist anyone in town. It is for these reasons and more that Joe is the 2015 Community Award Recipient. It is the least we can do to say thanks.

graduating in 1982. Even while attending Fairhaven, Bill remained involved in his hometown school supporting their athletics and serving as the basketball manager. Bill is currently employed at the Fairhaven Workshop in Champion, Ohio where he is a proud member of the lawn mowing crew. Bill is an avid Cleveland’s fan supporting the Browns, Cavs, and Indians. He’s disappointed the Cavs didn’t win the championship this year, but he’s confident they will bring it home next year. He is the number one fan of King Brother’s racing and a proud supporter of the Bristol Panthers, Mike Davis Auctioneering, and Ron Mahan trucking. He is a member of the United Methodist Church and proud to call West Farmington his home. Farmington may be small, but the hearts are large. Bill is proud to call Farmington his home and hopes his neighbors are as proud of him as he is of them. He would like to thank everyone for selecting him as this year’s grand marshall. He is honored.
Wishing our wonderful community another successful festival!
