INTRODUCTION Fontys Pulsed, Minor Embrace Technology, Entrepreneurship and Creativity Fontys Pulsed designs and executes educational programs that are built on understanding that disciplinary, cultural and intellectual diversity, combined with a creative and open mindset, drives successful (social, business & technological) innovation. Our programs combine education and innovation into an active learning approach. Students are challenged to search for new ways to address complex contemporary challenges by utilising the synergy that comes from creative practices and exploring emerging technologies. This active learning approach is situated in our own Pulsed room. This room lives by one rule: ‘Make education and life one!’. Education is not a preparation for life, but part of life itself. Therefore all these students from different disciplines and backgrounds create their own home feeling by changing, designing and building this room. This magazine will show you the in’s and out’s of one of these programs run by Fontys Pulsed: the minor Embrace Technology, Entrepreneurship and Creativity. Things such as learning lines, the challenges, the courses and some personal stories will give you a peek into a program that is like no other...

Diederik Jekel Physicist, writer

Take a look at your surroundings, see what’s going on. The world you die in is exactly the same as you were born in. So, all the things that you’ve learned from your parents and grandparents was perfectly okay to live out your life. However, the world now is changing so fast, so rapidly that nobody knows what kind of information is relevant in the near future. The best tip I can give you is to adjust and think about survival of the fittest. If you try to have a look at your surroundings, see what’s changing, try to adapt. In that way you might have a wonderful, long and fruitful life.

04

FIND YOUR RHYTHM The world changes quickly and this change is going faster and faster. There is a transition to a learning economy in a world that is becoming increasingly unpredictable and where there are major societal challenges. In that world adaptability is crucial to maintain yourself as a professional. Social development requires flexibility, adaptability, creativity and agility. That is why new requirements will constantly be imposed on future generations.

We believe very little educational systems provide students with the skills mentioned. You are used to listen and follow the teacher without any room for your own personality or creativity. You are put on repeat. During our minor we are going to make you turn all the buttons around. Experiment, play, test and feel. What works, what doesn’t? What inspires you, what doesn’t move you? Get a feeling for your own rhythm. After getting a feeling of your own sound we will challenge you to play it to the world. Who would you like to reach? What audience should definitely hear you play. During the process of finding your own rhythm all the necessary skills for our changing world will be challenged and therefore developed. Giving you the right set of skills to become a Self-Directed professional.

YOU USED TO REPEAT TODAY YOU LEARN TO SHUFFLE Education on repeat, where students PULSED’s educational programs are forced to adapt to the rhythm lets you play with a variety of of their teacher. Your rhythm is the instruments, that enables you to same as your classmates’. discover different sounds on several different stages. Inspirational teachers will challenge you to explore your own sound.

IN THE FUTURE YOU PLAY You dare to broadcast your personal sound wherever and whenever you want. You are the professional who is a boss at playing the instrument(s) that suit your personal sound.

THIS MINOR Students from the minor Embrace Technology, Entrepreneurship and Creativity work to improve themselves as a Self-Directed Professional. The design based learning process used in the program lets students work creatively together in different fields and disciplines. This promotes the personal, professional and educational background of the students and strengthens their existing identity, skills and knowledge. This process also enriches them with additional competencies in order for them to grow into virtuous team players who are able to take on today’s complex challenges.

An international and intercultural learning environment is created in this minor because there is a broad influx of both disciplines and nationalities. Both technical and non technical students work together in this learning environment, developing lasting insights into each others disciplines. Learning how to speak all different languages coming from different disciplines and backgrounds is essential for the flexibility and adaptability in future workspaces.

OUR DNA

Picture of Embrace TEC DNA

The DNA of a Self-Directed Professional consists of a variety of different concepts that have a specific focus but are also interconnected with each other. Personal Identity being at the core, followed by Design Based Working and Practice Based Research. Future Technologies, Glocal Impact and Social Entrepreneurship on the outer levels. The whole DNA is being connected by Self-Directed Learning.

10 Personal Identity The uniqueness of every individual is already present from birth. We believe strongly in a student’s true colorfulness and potential, regardless of origin, nurture and experiences. The program helps students to acquire the knowledge and skills to become aware of their personal identity, their true colors.

Practise Based Research We aim to train professionals who have the inquisitive ability to systematically shape the design process of social and technological innovation from different perspectives. Research is always an integral part of the design process. Research takes place during the design process (research through design) and design as a means of participating in research (design science research)

Design Based Working Design based working stands for: “Actively seeking out and creating opportunities for alignment, concerning the realization of positive impact, using technology.” We emphasise the process and emerging artefacts, rather than the actions one executes. We believe that this stimulates both a ‘makers mindset’ and the discovery of one’s own preferred approach to designing.

Future Technologies Many exciting new technologies are continually changing the world and improving human well-being. Basic knowledge and some practical experience enable people to feel and understand these new technologies. This leads not only to their use, but also to their application in new innovations. A Self-Directed professional creates a responsibility and awareness of future technologies. And has insight into the impact of these technologies and the role they play in today’s and tomorrow’s society. How does it affect my personal life, my professional career, my friends and family?

Glocal Impact When we see a bold or tremendous change, there’s no doubt we’re witnessing impact. Some changes, though, are small, gradual, or even take place over generations. We empower students to find out where they want to create their own impact on society. By looking inwards and finding their own core values, passions and frustrations they create their own message to the world. Translating this message into a measurable future solution (realisation of an artefact) is where they add value to the people around them or maybe even on the other side of the world.

Social Entrepreneurship Social entrepreneurship is, at its most basic level, doing business for a social cause. In other words, social entrepreneurs create social impact by doing business. They combine social issues with commercial ones in a way that improves the lives of people who have to deal with the cause. Ethics and sustainability are therefore important aspect that social entrepreneurs take into account when developing and bringing new solutions to the market. They do not only measure their success in terms of profit. Success to social entrepreneurs means that they have improved the world. So it doesn’t necessarily mean that they set up their own company, but they do have an entrepreneurial attitude, are proactive and have a sense for new possibilities.

Ramon Vullings

Cross-industry expert & idea-DJ I’m an idea-DJ. I mix ideas, cross sectors, cross domains to help people to look outside their business. Technology, Entrepreneurship and Creativity are three core skills for the future workforce. There is no sector without technology. Entrepreneurship is being promoted at all levels. With an aging workforce, people are not sure what’s coming in their life and in their business environment. And creativity is a core item which actually separates us from the machines. There’s a lot of machine learning now, so the only surviving skill is creativity, because machines can do a lot of cool stuff, but still are not so creative.

OUR LEARNING LINES AND THEIR COURSES The different concepts of the DNA are translated into specific learning lines that create the program of the minor Embrace Technology, Entrepreneurship and Creativity. Each learning line is build-up by different activities and sessions. Depending on the content or goal the form of these activities varies from blended online courses to lectures to workshops to field trips.

The content of the learning lines is always flexible and adapted to the current trends in the specific fields. Goal of these learning lines is to provide a wide variety of subjects to inspire and educate the student. Combined with the freedom for each student to choose and create your own path within the learning line. Shuffle the content to make sure it suits your rhythm.

PRACTICE BASED WORKING

OUR PROGRAM Shitty robot challenge

D!SR#PT!>E MESSVG!NG Challenge

Build a robot that works but is very shitty using recycled materials and has an impact on the lives of toddlers.

Create an art experience, based on your core values, explaining your personal message to the world.

A robot that works but is very shitty. Does it brush your hair? Cleans your teeth? Makes your sandwich? Slaps you awake in the morning? You will play, experiment, try out a new technology. Use a combination of software and hardware to design a robot that playfully energizes kids, and don’t be afraid to make it very shitty.

Meaningful Challenge Use a specific technology to make a meaningful improvement on the life of a specific target group. Virtual reality on the elderly, Internet of Things for the Youth, Drones for young children, Intelligent light for expats. Only a technology and only a specific target group. Improve their lives. Up to you and your group to follow the critical design steps. Interview and find the problems, ideate and come up with solutions, prototype and gather feedback. All in the time of three weeks. Let’s hope your group survives!

Every person has his or her own identity that consists of his or her own core values. However, most people are not always aware of the importance of core values in everyday life and its impact on their fascinations and even their role in society. You will relate these values to the world and events around you and the role you might take in society. Based on this creative, explorative research you will formulate your personal message to the world. You will define your audience and its values and will design an art experience (3D artwork, performance or any other) with a maximum impact on your audience. During this project you will explore manufacturing technologies like 3D printing and laser cutting to support your -disruptive- message to the world.

Future Solution challenge Create an authentic design, for a specific target group, using technology that is going to have a positive impact on the future. You have explored (new) technologies and global challenges. You discovered more about yourself, your core values, how you operate within a team and what drives you to learn and create. You also experiences what it is like to design for a target group in a realistic context. In short, you have all the information and experience you need to create and follow your own path and design a future solution. Creating your own business, start social projects, deepdive into technological challenges, sell your one million dollar shower idea. It’s time to show the world what you’ve got, make your mark and create a better future.

Rik Vogel

Interview

You really get to know yourself a little bit better. The teachers ask you questions about yourself that were never asked before. The talent aspect of the minor was really affecting me. I’ve learned what my talents are, which I didn’t know before. And I realized how to use my talents in a more effective way. Also, a really nice aspect of this minor is that you are challenged to come up with solutions coming from different markets than your own major. Therefore, As a sport student I realized that I can add value to other challenges than my major sports. So now it becomes easier to gain confidence in things I do and want to do.

ASSESSMENTS A Self-Directed Professional makes deliberate choices towards it’s future and it’s present path. Going left or right depending on interests, passions, motivation, professional value, expected impact or anything else. This also goes for our educational approach, a Self Directed Learner. Nobody knows what the future will look like. So, you need to keep learning as you go. This is where the Self-Directed Learning comes in. This learning line connects all the other learning lines found in the DNA. The learning line helps you to actively learn and apply your findings in the future. Learn from today, envision tomorrow! Every individual path is different and therefore each creating their own experiences. Collecting these experiences and materializing them through video, images, pieces of evidence or feedback gives you the puzzle piece you need to create your road map of your own learning. A so called Pulsed map. This Pulsed map will become your visualization of the development your making during our minor program. Based on this map you will be assessed and that will therefore determine if you pass the minor at the end. This means no exams or tests where every unique individual has to jump through the same hoops. But tailored assessment on the specific growth each student has gone through during his time at the minor Embrace Technology, Entrepreneurship and Creativity. Interview

Follow the minor if you want to step out of your comfort zone. I realized that I have so many skills and I have actually a lot of creativity I’ve never used during my major or in daily life. So, entering the minor made me realize that I could do really cool stuff with the skills I already have. I think that is something that especially young people need sometimes to get motivated for their major, or life in general. So the minor is a good starting point if you want to use all your skills and creativity into something really awesome.

Emmanuel Mottrie CEO of TMC

Our company culture is based on sharing values and not rules, a company where we can be partners, coaches, rather than superiors to each other. And for that, I’m really looking for young people like you, young students who think in another way, because we think that the old relationship employee-employer is something of the past. You are that kind of people! Please, continue your study, try to develop next to your technical competences also your entrepreneurial skills, because TMC is looking for you!

Corporate Rebel: on a mission to make work more fun

Start learning the things you want to learn. Don’t go to classes where the teacher tells you what to do. Find the classes that you find are most important.Autonomy is important. I can make my own decisions; I don’t have to listen to a boss. Therefore, I am able to make choices and decisions I really believe are necessary. That gives me a lot of energy. If you choose to do thinks you’re really passionate about, the money will follow.
