ORIGIN OF FENI
Feni is a popular alcoholic beverage that originates from the Indian state of Goa. It is made from cashew or coconut fruit and is an integral part of the Goan culture and heritage. The drink is loved by locals and tourists alike and has a distinct taste and aroma that cannot be found in any other alcoholic beverage.
The exact origin of Feni in Goa is not clear, but it is believed to have been produced in the state for over 400 years. The first mention of Feni in written records is found in the travelogue of Portuguese traveller, Duarte Barbosa, who visited Goa in the early 16th century. They brought with them the art of distilling alcohol, which was initially used to make Brandy. However, the Goans soon discovered that they could make alcohol from the cashew fruit that was found abundantly in the state. And thus, Feni was born.
Feni is made using a traditional method involving the fermentation of cashew or coconut fruit. The fruit is crushed, and the juice is extracted, which is then left to ferment in earthen pots for several days. Once the fermentation process is complete, the liquid is distilled in traditional copper stills to obtain Feni.
One of the unique aspects of Feni is that it is a handcrafted drink. The process of making Feni involves a lot of manual labour, and the distillation is done using traditional methods, which require a lot of skill and expertise This gives Feni its distinct taste and aroma, making it a prized possession for many Goans.
