D R A M AT U R G I C A L I N F O R M AT I O N A Little Night Music will be the first time that Director William Brown and actors Shannon Cochran, Deanna Dunagan and Jonathan Weir have all worked on the same production. We asked these long-time friends to tell us about each other and what they’re looking forward to about this musical.

On Shannon Cochran…

Bill: I was in Cabaret at the Marriott Theatre in 1988. The actress playing Sally Bowles got injured, and Shannon, who had done the role before, took it over. I met her for the first time on stage during a performance. Playing Amanda and Elyot in Private Lives at Writers’ in 1997 sealed the deal. When you play those two roles and do it right, you fall in love with each other.

Jon: My first impression of Shannon was when I saw her in Pal Joey at Goodman Theatre in 1988. Shannon was, as always, captivating. She sang, danced and acted with such ease, grace and certainty that you couldn’t take your eyes off her.

Deanna: I was so in awe of Shannon when we worked together on Stepping Out at Steppenwolf in 1988. I remember rehearsing the dance steps with her in front of the mirror, asking, “We’re doing the same steps; why do you look like a dancer and I don’t?” She was very kind and patient with me, and by the time the run was over we were fast friends.

On Deanna Dunagan…

Bill: Deanna is unique, beautiful and amazingly talented. I love how unedited she is. We had a great time acting together in Butley, and then I had the privilege of directing her in The Chalk Garden at Northlight in 2006. She’s an original.

Shannon: I can’t even remember how Deanna and I got so close so quickly, but we became best friends during Stepping Out. We are very honest with each other about our work, and I admire and respect her blazing talent as much as any artist I know.

Jon: Stepping Out at Steppenwolf, in particular Shannon and Deanna, had a huge influence on my life and career. To this day working with those amazing women remains one of the highlights of my career.

On Jonathan Weir…

Deanna: Jon was the only man in the cast of Stepping Out and he was coming into the show as a replacement. I imagine he must have been intimidated, but you never would have known it. He stepped right in, and it was as if he’d always been part of the “family.”

Bill: I met Jon through Shannon, and it turned out that he and my partner Steve went to undergrad together. I think Jon is such an underestimated actor, and I’m privileged to have been able to direct him at Writers’ in Arms and the Man and Misalliance.

D R A M AT U R G I C A L I N F O R M AT I O N Shannon: Jon is one of the many men in my life I could have married and been totally happy with. Unfortunately he was already taken, so I have had to settle for a life-long crush. How fortunate we finally get to meet as long-lost lovers onstage at Writers’. (Hope my husband doesn’t see this!)

On Bill Brown…

Deanna: Bill is such a lovely man—magnanimous, charming, and funny. He is just so much fun to be on stage with. He’s also a brilliant director—one of those directors every actor wants to work with.

Jon: Bill’s passion for the material and for the actors he directs creates one of the best environments I’ve worked in. He and his partner Steve love to entertain and are amazing cooks. At one of their parties years ago, I turned to Bill and said “you direct like you throw a party,” to which Bill responded “I don’t see there’s much of a difference.” Brilliant!

Shannon: I can remember when we were doing Private Lives together, and we would call each other after a performance to compare notes on the evening’s show because we just couldn’t wait till the next night to discuss it! Every once in a while, you meet a fellow artist with whom you have an immediate recognition of a shared sensibility, and that’s it—you fall in love for life!

What are you all looking forward to most about A Little Night Music?

Jon: Everything! Diving into Sondheim’s material—a first for me as I’ve never performed his work before. Exploring the relationship between Desirée and Fredrik with one of my best friends. Working with a group of this caliber comes along all too infrequently in this business and it’s all the sweeter that it’s at Writers’. I am very grateful.

Deanna: I’m really looking forward to making my debut in the Tudor Court venue.

It’s an embracing, intimate space that I’ve enjoyed as an audience member many times. It will be fun to be on stage there at last.

Bill: I’m looking forward to the challenge of it. Discussion began months ago, and Shannon, Jon and Deanna call me and ask about things. I had to tell Jon to stop calling because I had other plays to do first! It’s going to be a nice return for all of us.

SPECIAL THANKS Sarah Heberlein, Steve Hinger, Laura Gordon, LCG Sales, Inc. NOTE FROM THE DIRECTOR It was the morning after I’d seen She Loves Me. Michael’s production at Writers’ had utterly enchanted me. Beautifully acted and sung without amplification, the beloved musical was given new life in our intimate theatre. That morning I called Michael and said I wanted to do A Little Night Music in that same space. Mr. Halberstam has been very generous with me, through the years, indulging my theatrical impulses. He immediately said he’d check on the rights.

As I began to daydream, I saw this as an opportunity to move closer to the original impulse for A Little Night Music – Ingmar Bergman’s comic film Smiles of a Summer Night. Bergman’s lyrical film, which explored sex, youth, aging, parenting, and did I say sex, was the jumping off point for Hugh Wheeler’s brilliant book. And it inspired Stephen Sondheim’s most gorgeous score. An entire score set in waltz time, it also draws inspiration from Richard Strauss’s opera in ¾ time, Der Rosenkavalier. In other words, this is lush music. And add to that Sondheim’s sharp, delicious lyrics.

More than a year has gone by of meetings, design conferences, auditions, and rehearsals. At the same time, I have been lucky enough to be part of a larger conversation about the new Writers’ Theatre space. The word “intimate” has come up a lot, needless to say. What does it mean? I know what it means to A Little Night Music. It means I don’t have to “sell” this musical. With the best designers, extraordinary singer/actors, and astonishing musicians we can inhabit A Little Night Music in an intimate, personal, human way. It can be overheard.

Shannon Corey (Fredrika Armfeldt) makes her professional debut at Writers’ Theatre.

She has performed in many community theatre and school productions. Most recently, she appeared as Dorothy in The Wizard of Oz (Music On Stage), Ariel in Footloose (Schaumburg on Stage), Kim in Bye Bye Birdie (Tesseract Theatre Ensemble) and Cosette in Les Misérables (Barrington Middle School).

In 2011, she won 1st place in the high school division of the Chicago Chapter of the National Association of Teachers of Singing Classical Competition. She is a junior at Barrington High School where she enjoys singing in her high school choir and acapella group.

J. Michael Finley (Frid & Lieder Singer) makes his Writers’ Theatre debut. Recent credits include: Steve in Hair (Paramount Theatre in Aurora), Sweeney Todd (Drury Lane Theatre Oakbrook Terrace) and Louie in The Christmas Schooner (Mercury Theater). Finley was born in Jonesboro, Arkansas, but calls Lebanon, Missouri his hometown. He recently graduated from CCPA Roosevelt University in Chicago with his degree in Musical Theatre. Cory Goodrich (Malla & Lieder Singer) makes her Writers’ Theatre debut with one of her favorite shows.

She was most recently seen as Alma in The Christmas Schooner (Mercury Theatre). Favorite roles in Chicago include: Mother in Ragtime (Joseph Jefferson Award), Anna Smith in Meet Me in St. Louis, Guenevere in Camelot, Jenny in Shenandoah (Joseph Jefferson nomination) and Sweeney Todd (Drury Lane Theatre Oakbrook Terrace), Irene Malloy in Hello Dolly (Joseph Jefferson nomination), Vi in Footloose (Theatre at the Center), Ethel Toffelmeyer in Music Man and Les Miserables (Marriott Theatre In Lincolnshire), Meg in Brigadoon (Joseph Jefferson nomination, Candlelight Dinner Playhouse) and Sunday in the Park with George (Chicago Shakespeare Theater). Royen Kent (Henrik Egerman) makes his Writers’ Theatre and Chicago theatre debut.

Tiffany Scott (Countess Charlotte Malcolm & Lieder Singer) returns to Writers’ Theatre, where she last appeared as Lady Utterword in last season’s Heartbreak House.

Chicago credits include A Christmas Carol, The Edward Albee Festival (Goodman Theatre), The Two Noble Kinsmen (Joseph Jefferson Award Nomination – Supporting Actress), Short Shakespeare! The Comedy of Errors (Chicago Shakespeare Theater), Beast on the Moon (Joseph Jefferson Award Nomination: Principal Actress, Provision Theater) and work with Court Theatre, Griffin Theatre, Lifeline Theatre, Lookingglass Theatre Company, TimeLine Theatre Company and others. Regional credits include Berkeley Repertory Theatre, McCarter Theatre, Seattle Repertory Theatre, Illinois Shakespeare Festival and Utah Shakespearean Festival. Theatre Company, Washington DC), Henry Ford in Ragtime (Drury Lane Oakbrook Theatre), Scrooge in A Christmas Carol, The Visit (Goodman Theatre) Stepping Out (Steppenwolf Theatre Company), Violet (Joseph Jefferson nomination best supporting actor, Apple Tree Theatre), The First and Grand Hotel (Marriott Theatre In Lincolnshire). Regional credits include: Henry Higgins in My Fair Lady (Skylight Opera Theatre) and Noel Coward in Noel and Gertie (Next Act Theatre) both in Milwaukee. Weir is an adjunct professor of theatre in the Depatment of Fine and Performing Arts at Loyola University Chicago.

Stephen Sondheim (Music and Lyrics), one of the most influential and accomplished composer/lyricists in Broadway history, was born in New York City and raised in New York and Pennsylvania. As a teenager he met Oscar Hammerstein II, who became Sondheim’s mentor. Sondheim graduated from Williams College, where he received the Hutchinson Prize for Music Composition. After graduation he studied music theory and composition with Milton Babbitt.

He worked for a short time in the 1950s as a writer for the television show “Topper”; his first professional musical theatre job was as the songwriter for the unproduced musical Saturday Night. He wrote the lyrics for West Side Story (1957), Gypsy (1959) and Do I Hear A Waltz? (1965), as well as additional lyrics for Candide (1973).

Musicals for which he has written both music and lyrics include A Funny Thing Happened On The Way To The Forum (1962), Anyone Can Whistle (1964), Company (1970 - 1971 Tony Award Music and Best Lyrics), Follies (1971 - 1972 Tony Award Score and New York Drama Critics Circle Award; revised in London, 1987), A Little Night A Little Night Music 13

He has written scores for the films Stavisky (1974) and Reds

(1981), and composed songs for the film Dick Tracy (1990 - Academy Award for Best Song). He is on the Council of the Dramatist Guild, the national association of playwrights, composers and lyricists, having served as its president from 1973 until 1981, and in 1983 was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Letters. In 1990 he was appointed the first Visiting Professor of Contemporary Theatre at Oxford University. He was also recipient of a Kennedy Center Honor in 1993.

Hugh Wheeler (Author) was a novelist, playwright and screen writer. He wrote more than thirty mystery novels under the pseudonyms Q. Patrick and Patrick Quentin, and four of his novels were transformed into films: Black Widow, Man in the Net, The Green-Eyed Monster and The Man with Two Wives.

His plays include Big Fish, Little Fish (1961), Look: We’ve Come Through (1961) and We Have Always Lived in the Castle (1966, adapted from the Shirley Jackson novel), he co-authored with Joseph Stein the book for a new production of the 1919 musical Irene (1973), wrote the books for A Little Night Music (1973), a new production of Candide (1973), Sweeney Todd, the Demon Barber of Fleet Street (1979, based on a version of the play by Christopher Bond), and Meet Me in St. Louis (adapted from the 1949 MGM musical), contributed additional material for the musical Pacific Overtures (1976), and wrote a new adaptation of the Kurt Weill opera Silverlake, which was directed

by Harold Prince at the New York Opera. He received Tony and Drama Desk Awards for A Little Night Music, Candide and Sweeney Todd. Prior to his death in 1987, Mr. Wheeler was working on two new musicals, Bodo and Fu Manchu and a new adaptation of The Merry Widow.

William Brown (Director) returns to Writers’ Theatre where he has directed Joseph Jefferson nominated productions of Heartbreak House, As You Like It, Another Part of the Forest, Arms and the Man, Our Town, Rocket to the Moon, Misalliance, The Glass Menagerie, Incident at Vichy and the world premieres of Brett Neveu’s Old Glory and Do the Hustle. He recently directed and wrote (with Doug Frew) To Master the Art, a play about Julia and Paul Child in Paris (TimeLine Theatre Company). He most recently directed Fallen Angels (Indiana Rep) and at Northlight Theatre, where he directed his own adaptation with original music of She Stoops to Conquer (After Dark Award), as well as The Chalk Garden and Lady Windermere’s Fan. He has directed 13 productions at American Players Theatre in Spring Green, Wisconsin, including The Critic, Hay Fever, The Comedy of Errors, Night of the Iguana, Antony and Cleopatra, The Matchmaker and this summer, Troilus

and Cressida. He is Associate Artistic Director of Montana Shakespeare in the Parks. Brown received a Joseph Jefferson Award for Best Actor for his portrayal of Henry Kissinger in Writers’ Theatre’s Nixon’s Nixon.

Valerie Maze (Music Director/ Pianist/ Conductor) makes her Writers’ Theatre debut. She most recently was Cover Conductor on Showboat at Lyric Opera of Chicago, where she has been on staff as Dance Pianist and Assistant Conductor in recent seasons. In 2011, she conducted Follies and The Adventures of Pinocchio (Chicago Shakespeare Theater). Other Chicago credits include: Drury Lane Theatre, Noble Fool Theatricals, Apple Tree Theatre, Theater at the Center, Light Opera Works, Provision Theater, Chicago Muse, Bowen Park Theatre and Opera Company, Elgin Opera and DuPage Opera Theatre. Regional credits include: Peninsula Players, The Wagon Wheel Theatre, Portland Opera, Indianapolis Opera, Harrisburg Opera Association, Utah Festival Opera & Music Theatre and California Opera Association. This fall, Ms. Maze will be Assistant Conductor for Hansel and Gretel and the Assistant Chorus Master at the Lyric Opera of Chicago.

Roberta Duchak (Music Supervisor) is thrilled to be a part of this extraordinary creative team. As a vocalist, she can be heard on numerous recordings, including her debut solo CD: Intersections. Ms. Duchak is currently the vocal coach for Academy award winning actor Russell Crowe, preparing him for his upcoming role as Javert in the feature film Les Miserables.

Kevin Depinet (Scenic Designer) returns to Writers’ Theatre where he last designed The Detectives Wife, Do The Hustle and Oh Coward!.

He has designed for Steppenwolf Theatre Company, Goodman Theatre, Chicago Shakespeare Theater, The McCarter Theatre, The Denver Theatre Center, Court Theatre, The Arden Theatre, Milwaukee Repertory Theater, American Players Theatre, Drury Lane Theatre, Chicago Children’s Theatre, Fox Valley Repertory, Indiana Repertory Theatre and Illinois Shakespeare Festival. He designed scenery for Michael Mann’s film Public Enemies (Universal Studios). He was also the associate designer for August: Osage County (Steppenwolf Theatre Company, National Theatre of London, The Music Box Theatre on Broadway and the US National Tour).

Depinet will be designing Detroit at The National Theatre of Great Britain this summer and a touring museum exhibit for Sherlock Holmes. Depinet is also an adjunct professor of design at DePaul University. He studied at Ball State University and the Yale School of Drama.

In 2011 he directed A Minister’s Wife at Lincoln Center Theater. His forays into opera have included The Rape Of Lucretia (Chicago Opera Theater), Francesca De Ramini featuring the Chicago Symphony Orchestra conducted by Christoph Eschenbach and Le Freyshutz, a Berlioz adaptation of the Weber opera conducted by Christoph Eschenbach in its North American Premiere (Ravinia Festival).

He spent two and a half years teaching Shakespeare at The Theatre School at DePaul University and has received awards for excellence in theater management and/or artistic achievement from The Chicago Drama League, The Arts & Business Council, Chicago Lawyers for the Creative Arts, The Chicago Associates of the Stratford Festival and most recently, the 2010 Zelda Fichandler Award.

Kathryn M. Lipuma (Executive Director) joined Writers’ Theatre in March 2007 after nine seasons with the award-winning Signature Theatre Company in New York where she was Executive Director. At Signature, she produced 28 productions including award-winning revivals of Horton Foote’s The Trip To Bountiful, August Wilson’s Seven Guitars and Lanford Wilson’s Burn This and worked with such acclaimed writers as Edward

Albee, Lee Blessing, Horton Foote, Maria Irene Fornes, John Guare, Bill Irwin, Romulus Linney, Paula Vogel, August Wilson and Lanford Wilson. During her tenure, the organization enjoyed consistent growth and recognition. Among its numerous awards and accolades was recognition as Outstanding National Theatre of the Year and the launch of Signature Theatre Company’s successful $15 Ticket Program, which has become a national model for subsidized ticket programming. Prior to her time at Signature, she spent six years with Chicago’s Goodman Theatre. Lipuma has consulted with not-for-profit theatres, hosted fundraising seminars for development professionals from across the country and has been a guest lecturer on arts management in the graduate programs at New York University, Marymount Manhattan College and Northwestern University. She has served on numerous arts and funding panels, including the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs, the Philadelphia Theatre Institute for the Pew Charitable Trust, the Multi-Arts Production (MAP) Fund, supported by the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation, The Rockefeller Foundation and the Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs. Lipuma currently serves on the Board of Directors and Executive Committee of the League of Chicago Theatres. She is a graduate of The George Washington University in Washington, DC.

WRITERS’ HISTORY In 1992, Writers’ Theatre was founded in order to create an environment where the written word and the nurturing of artists were the foundation of all productions.

We opened our first venue that year in the ante-room of a newly opened bookstore in Glencoe on the North Shore of Chicago. The limited space available gave way to a new aesthetic that has been a company hallmark ever since—intimacy.

Under the artistic leadership of Founding Artistic Director Michael Halberstam, who continues in that role to this day, Writers’ became a welcome addition to the already vibrant Chicago arts community. The Theatre quickly garnered significant critical acclaim and established a reputation as a home for world-class art and artists, opening a second performance space in 2003. Our inviting 108-seat Tudor Court space continued the company’s trademark level of intimacy while allowing for a new scale of production and affording the opportunity to expand audiences, programming and educational outreach.

Acclaimed by The Wall Street Journal as one of the top half-dozen regional theatres in the country, Writers’ has offered more than 81 productions, including 14 world premieres. We have garnered numerous awards and accolades, including 88 Joseph Jefferson Award nominations and 20 Awards, as well as multiple citations of Artistic Director Michael Halberstam for excellence and contributions to the field, including The 2010 Zelda Fichandler Award. In 2007, Writers’ debuted nationally with a New York premiere of Crime and Punishment, followed in 2011 by a Lincoln Center production of A Minister’s Wife—the musical adaptation of George Bernard Shaw’s Candida, conceived and directed by Halberstam.

In July, 2011, Writers’ announced the hiring of the award-winning, internationally renowned Studio Gang Architects, led by principal Jeanne Gang, FAIA, to design a new home for the Theatre in downtown Glencoe. This will allow the Theatre to continue to grow to accommodate our audience, while maintaining our trademark intimacy. The new facility will resonate with and complement the Theatre’s neighboring Glencoe community, adding tremendous value to Chicagoland and helping establish the North Shore as a premier cultural destination.

E D U C AT I O N O U T R E A C H & A U D I E N C E E N R I C H M E N T Writers’ Theatre’s Education Outreach Programs have served more than 30,000 students throughout Chicagoland. Our outreach programs include Write On!, an artistin-residency program that brings students and Writers’ Theatre’s artists together to explore classroom studies; the Novel Series Study Plan, an arts and literature curriculum and The MLK Project: The Fight For Civil Rights, a touring outreach performance that chronicles a student’s journey through the Civil Rights Movement.

ABOUT THE WOMAN’S LIBRARY CLUB OF GLENCOE The Woman’s Library Club of Glencoe, the building that currently houses the Writers’ Theatre’s 108-seat venue, was the third women’s club to be formed in Illinois and the 61st in the entire country. Organized in 1872 for “social and intellectual improvement,” the Club enlarged its purpose in 1928 “to promote the welfare of the community.” In 1947, its purpose was again enlarged and revised “to promote philanthropic and intellectual interests and the welfare of the community.” The Club chose its name because it was designed to use funds paid by the members to form the nucleus of a library for Glencoe. The first Clubhouse, at 654 Greenleaf Avenue, was used from 1906 until 1928. The present Clubhouse was opened on October 5, 1938.
